Grab your Bibles, open them up to Matthew chapter six.

Matthew chapter six, we're actually going to be at the end of the chapter today.

Matthew chapter six, verse 33 is the verse we're going to be focusing on here in just a moment.

Let me just ask you to consider how many choices that you have in your daily life.

It can be kind of overwhelming when you think about it.

When you get up, you immediately got choices as to what you're going to wear.

You get up, you got immediately choices about what you want to eat for breakfast.

Let's say you're a Starbucks person, you go into Starbucks.

Did you know at Starbucks there are over 87,000 different drink combinations?

87,000, right?

So I mean, like, what are you going to choose when you do that?

That doesn't even count the secret menu, which some of you have made up your own drink because you don't like one of the 87,000 options that are available, and you've got your own special drink with your own special barista.

They know they've got it waiting for you.

It's a great setup, all of that.

You then get in the car, you got more choices.

Do you listen to local radio?

Do you listen to satellite radio?

Do you listen to Spotify, which has over a hundred million songs and 50 million podcasts?

Which, by the way, season two, episode two releases on Tuesday.

A great thing for you to do with your Spotify podcast, okay?

Uh one setup podcast coming out this week is gonna be great.

Uh, or do you listen to Apple Music?

Or do you listen to YouTube, a sermon or something?

Do you do you instead listen to just silence?

There's so many different choices.

Let's say you go to work, let's say you go to school, you come home and you want to decompress a little bit.

You sit in front of the television, you grab the remote, and man, you got all kinds of choices there.

Do I do Hulu?

Do I do Disney Plus?

Do I do Max?

Do I do Peacock Plus or Paramount Plus?

Or do I do uh Netflix?

Like, what do I do?

You can spend 20 minutes figuring out which platform just to watch something on.

Then if you're gonna choose Netflix, Netflix has over 17,000 titles globally.

17,000.

Uh yeah, I read a research this week that said most people spend 19 minutes every night trying to choose what to watch on Netflix.

I've had multiple times where I have spent more time looking for something to watch than actually watching something at night.

Am I the only one that's experienced that?

I mean, it's just like decision overload.

Way too much stuff going on.

And that doesn't even count all the other decisions that we have to make.

But let's not talk about just the decisions we have to make.

What do we do when the decisions are not just what's convenient, but they're what's consequential?

When the decisions are not like what am I gonna binge watch, but instead, what direction should I take in my life?

Not what coffee am I gonna drink, but who am I supposed to marry or who am I supposed to date?

Question I want us to wrestle with today is this how do I make the right choices in life?

Like, how do I make the right choices in life?

We all want to choose well.

We all want to know what to do.

But the question we're gonna address today, and the way we're gonna look at the text, is gonna help us see how to make sure that you're making the right choice.

Not just the convenient ones, not just the ones that feel good in the moment, but the ones that lead to peace and to purpose and to a life that aligns with what God has created me for.

Before we answer that question, we're gonna keep living in decision fatigue, overwhelmed and underdirected.

And that's exactly why today's verse is so powerful.

I want to encourage you to grab the little verse card that you had in your seat.

Everybody grab it for me and wave it at me so I can see that you got it.

I certainly want to encourage you to do this.

Our goal of this series is not just the fact that we can preach each one of these verses each week, but more importantly, that you could put these verses in your life.

You could put these verses in your heart.

These things could be close to you and near and dear to you.

Uh this week's verse is Matthew chapter 6, verse 33.

Matthew 6:33

It's my favorite verse, okay?

It's my favorite verse of all of them.

So that every week, but this one, this one's really good.

This one's really, really good.

Okay.

Uh, if you reminder, the way we got these verses are they're the most shared, most liked, most engaged, most highlighted verses on the UVersion Bible app.

Here's what we're gonna do as we have this whole series is we're gonna do it the way that I typically memorize verses.

Let me encourage you to do the same.

You're gonna say the reference first, then we're gonna say together the verse, and then we're gonna say the reference again at the end.

Okay?

Here we go.

Matthew 6, 33.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Matthew 6, 33.

Great job.

Uh, what I want to do is I want to break this verse down into three statements.

And these three statements will help you make right choices in your life.

First statement is this go to God first.

Go to God first.

The very first words of this verse, seek first, not seek eventually, not seek if everything else doesn't work out.

It says, seek, the order is significant, first.

When you have a decision, when you're faced with a choice, where do you go first?

Part of the problem is how we view our lives.

You see, most of us view our spiritual life like it is a piece or a slice of a pie.

So all of us may have different pies, obviously, but we all have the same size pie.

And the idea is that basically I've got this area of my life, I've got my work life, that's one slice of my pie.

I've got my school life, that's a slice of the pie.

I've got my relationship life, that's one slice of the pie, my friends.

I've got over here my family, that's one big, big slice of the pie.

I've got over here my hobbies, that's another slice of the pie.

And then depending upon where we are spiritually, we assume that your spiritual life, if you're walking with the Lord, then maybe it's a really big piece of the pie.

But if uh maybe you're not walking with the Lord, but you would still say that you're a believer, then you would say, okay, well, right now in this season of my life, that the pie slice is a little bit smaller.

And the assumption is there's only so much pie to go around.

And so therefore, when you come to church, whenever you come in here and you hear about how the spiritual life should be significant and important in your life, you're thinking, oh my goodness, how am I gonna make these other parts of the pie smaller in order to accommodate getting the spiritual life bigger?

It's all about proportions.

That's not at all what the spiritual life should be viewed as.

Instead of it being viewed as a pie, you instead should view your life like a wheel.

Let me show you what a wheel looks like, obviously.

You see that there's the wheel and there's the spokes that go out of the center, which is the hub.

The hub is where the bearing and the axle, all the main parts of the actual wheel is, and you've got the tire on the outside of it.

And what I'm suggesting to you is this is that God should be the wheel, the center, and everything else comes out of that.

It's not about proportion, it's about priority.

And whenever you make Jesus first in your life, what you will begin to discover is that all the other spokes go into place and it makes a life that is balanced and under control and it makes sense.

What does this mean practically?

This means when you wake up tomorrow morning, before you check your phone, before you think about your to-do list, before you worry about that meeting or that bill, you talk to God first.

Not as a religious ritual, but as a starting point of your day.

And then everything else, your parenting decisions, your work decisions, your financial choices all flow out of that center hub.

Here's what I've noticed: people who make God the center hub don't have fewer problems, but they navigate those problems more effectively.

You wanna know why?

It's because you know where you're starting from, so you know how to evaluate even trials, you know how to evaluate even struggles.

You know God's gonna use those things for good, and so therefore, I'm gonna pray at times to endure, and then I'm also gonna pray at times to enjoy.

Which of course bears the question where do you go first?

When you are faced with a leadership crisis, where do you go first?

When you are dealing with the relationship tension, where do you go first?

When you've got financial problems, where do you go first?

The Bible has a specific word for this.

It's called first fruits.

Proverbs chapter 3, verse 9 and 10 as introduces it to us.

Proverbs 3:9

It says this honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce.

Then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.

He's essentially saying this: it's not just the amount that you give, it's which part that you give.

You're to give God the first and the best, not the leftover and the rest.

We've rightly taught this in relation to money, that you don't give God what is left over if you have enough.

You instead give to God first.

Literally, he's the first check that you write.

But we know this isn't just a money thing.

The Bible is rather clear, money is a gateway to the heart.

So the idea is that if I give God the first and the best, not only of my finances, it leads to me giving God the first and the best of all of my life.

Why?

Because God is preeminent, He's above everything else.

Paul understood this principle when he wrote to the Colossians.

He knew that where we focus determines how we live.

Colossians chapter 3, verses 1 and 2, it reads like this: if then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above.

Colossians 3:1

Where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God, set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

What this means is that whenever we're having a good day, we go to the Lord.

When we're having a bad day, we go to the Lord.

Whenever we're having a confusing day, we go to the Lord.

Proverbs chapter 3, verse 5 and 6.

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding in some of your ways, in the really, really big things, in the things that really matter.

Is that what it says?

In all these things, acknowledge him.

What that means is that the little thing that's not that big of a deal, and you don't really want to bring it up, guess what?

You're supposed to bring all of those things to him.

He's a God who wants to relate to you and get to know you and spend time with you so much that he cares about the little things.

And if you go to him first, then all the all the things come out of it.

And all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Uh the next verse, Psalm 2027, verse 4, says this one thing, one thing, if I can only do one thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.

To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.

He's not getting the leftover, he's getting the first and the best.

Isaiah chapter 26, verse 8 in the in your in the path of your judgments, O Lord, we wait for you.

Isaiah 26:8

Your name and remembrance are the desire of our soul.

What I want you to see is this if you want to make the right choices in life, you've got to start with this principle.

Go to God first.

There's a second idea though, found in the text.

Look at Matthew 6, 33 again.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

Second thing I want you to see, go to God first.

Number two, build his kingdom.

Build his kingdom.

I want to ask you to do something right now.

Either take out a pen and maybe something to write with.

There's a little card that should be in the seat back in front of you.

Or you can take out your phone, open the notes app, and I want to give you 30 seconds.

30 seconds to write down what your top three to five priorities are for the next 10 years of your life.

Where are you going to be professionally?

What are your relationships gonna look like, your health, your legacy?

How old will your kids be?

Thirty seconds right out the top three to five priorities.

If you don't think about this, you just need to know this.

You may look up and you've built a great life, it's all about you.

And you'll love it, but not everybody else around you is gonna love you.

Instead, what the invitation is, I'm gonna go to God first and I'm gonna build his kingdom.

Like he's gonna be the priority.

The context for this verse, if you look at Matthew chapter 6, in my Bible, it's got like a lot of different headings.

Matthew 6 · chapter mention

It's actually called the Sermon on the Mount.

We're actually gonna be preaching through the Sermon on the Mount in January of next year.

We're gonna be walking through all three chapters.

It's just absolutely loaded.

Best sermon that's ever been preached is the Sermon on the Mount, and we're gonna walk through it uh in the spring of next year.

But I want you to look, there's all these different topics that kind of come up and are dealt with specifically in chapter six.

And in my Bible, beginning in verse 19, it speaks about this whole concept and this idea of finances that helps us give context for what verse 33 talks about, this idea of building up the kingdom.

And it contrasts two different ways of investing.

And the idea is this where you spend your money shows what kingdom you're building.

Let's begin reading in Matthew chapter 6, verse 19.

Matthew 6:19

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Two ways of doing it.

Verse 21.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

When you live for stuff, somebody will eventually get all of your stuff.

Like I do funerals all the time.

And they'll come here to the serve church and we'll have a service, and then we'll head out to the graveside.

And I've literally done hundreds of funerals.

Not one time have I ever seen the hearse carrying the body of the person that is being buried with a U-Haul behind it.

Never once.

Instead, more often than not, I see a family who is fighting or divided on what to do with the person's stuff.

It's caused misery instead of blessing.

But the Bible tells us that if we instead live for his kingdom, then we have the opportunity to invest in something that goes on ahead of us so that whenever we are in eternity, we get to enjoy it, and it allows us, because we're not so enslaved to the things of this world, to enjoy the things as blessings and not burdens.

Folks, let me ask you, whose kingdom are you living for?

This does not mean that you can't have fun, you can't go on vacation, and the only thing you can do is go on mission trips.

I'm not saying that.

God gave us Sabbath and God gave us rest for our enjoyment, but it does mean that in the choices that I make in my life, if I'm thinking about the kingdom, then God gives me the ability to endure when things are hard and to enjoy when things are good.

If I'm thinking about building my kingdom, there's constant tension, there's constant anxiety, there's constant frustration because things don't always work out the way that I hoped that they would.

That's the whole context in my Bible, verse 25, all the way through the end of the chapter, verse 34, Jesus is saying this, why are you worried about life?

Like, why are you worried about stuff?

Why are you so consumed with what people think and what people do and what's gonna happen to you?

He's teaching us this principle.

When you live for his kingdom, it allows you to be in a place of experiencing God's provision, and it leads to joy beyond whatever could possibly be attained if you were to live for yourself.

Think back to the Lord's Prayer back at the beginning of Matthew chapter 6, beginning in verse 9.

Matthew 6 · chapter mention

It reads like this pray then like this.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

So I act in faith and hope and love and joy, even when I don't always feel it.

I know my situation isn't defined by how how well I perform, but how well he performed.

I know my acceptance isn't based on what rules I keep, but by the fact that God has chosen me to be his tool to carry out his kingdom here on this earth.

What kingdom are you living for?

Whose glory are you trying to achieve?

Finally, the results in Matthew chapter 6, verse 33.

Matthew 6:33

Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.

And all these things will be added to you.

I go to God first.

I build his kingdom.

Number three, trust his word.

Trust his word.

I'm always amazed at the depth and the breadth of this promise.

All these things.

This just shows that going to God for that one thing is great, but when you start going to God for all things, then you try to build his kingdom.

Here's what he's going to do: he's going to start bringing all these things.

All these things are things that you aren't asking for because you don't even know that you needed them.

All these things are conviction and sanctification that is happening that you aren't even aware of your need to repent or to change.

All these things are God working in this one area of your life which you haven't thought much about because you're so worried about all the other areas of your life.

I want you to think about it like this.

I want you to let these blue rocks here represent all these things.

Let it represent your kids' schedule.

Let it represent your weight trying to get healthier, that constant battle.

Let it represent just the craziness of your life.

The fact that you just feel like you're just kind of walking around, just like you're like your hair's on fire all the time, and you feel like you can never get ahead or never even just get baseline even.

I want this just to represent bills, financial burdens, just stuff that breaks.

Just kind of all the things that come up in life that seemingly take so much time and so much energy and so much thought.

And then you come to church and you get here and you hear about how you need to read your Bible.

It's important that you should be reading your Bible.

You hear about how you need to make sure that you have a relationship with the Lord and you're you're in prayer.

And so you try to go and you you pray.

You hear about how you need to have a marriage that honors God.

And my goodness, you're just trying to figure out how you're not just like two ships passing in the night.

So I don't know how you're gonna actually do all of that, but you're gonna you're gonna try.

I mean, you hear about it, and it just feels like, well, what how am I gonna be able to do all of that?

And then then you're trying to raise kids that love Jesus and and follow after him, and you gotta disciple them.

And I mean, I don't even know how to, I don't know how to do all of that.

And then you just kind of feel like it's just over and over again, there's just all this stuff, and then you look up and it just feels like this doesn't fit.

And so you have a desire to follow after the Lord, you have an intention to follow after him.

The problem is you just don't have the margin to do it.

There's just no way.

You want me to go to a group, you want me to serve?

I'm just getting here for one hour, barely.

Like this is all I can have time to do.

My life is so overprogrammed and so over-scheduled.

What if there's another way?

What if instead you actually took this verse seriously and it says that to seek first the kingdom of God means the very first thing that I do is I wake up and I spend time with Him?

What if it means that instead of me just trying to figure out how to fit something in and read a verse every now and then, I actually go and I read God's word and I see what it has to say to me.

Not just what it says about my situations, but what it specifically says about God.

What if I begin to make my marriage not just something that I'm just trying to kind of survive and enjoy for a vacation every now and then, but instead, I actually buy into this whole idea that my marriage is supposed to be a reflection of the gospel of Jesus Christ to other people.

And so therefore I'm gonna approach this thing radically differently.

So that it's not based upon how much time I spend, it's about basically how I view this whole thing together in the first place.

What if instead of trying to figure out how I just can get my kids to be a shuttle service back and forth to all their various activities, I actually begin to talk to them about things that matter the most, which are spiritual things, and I put that as a priority.

What if I actually do get into a group?

And what if I actually do figure out how to serve and all those kind of things that the church keeps bringing up and saying is an important thing?

And I make these things the very first things that take place in my life.

You know what's gonna happen?

All these things are gonna start to be added to you.

What you're gonna see is that you're gonna begin to enjoy life more, the things that used to stress you out, because all you're trying to do is figure out how you could just get from one place to the other, you begin to realize that when God's blessed you with the opportunity to be there.

You're gonna have some things that are gonna come up and stuff's still gonna break, and bills are still gonna come, and you're gonna begin to wonder how in the world am I gonna be able to get to those things and how am I gonna deal with those things?

But guess what?

Because you've started off with God in the very first place, you're gonna realize these things aren't gonna overwhelm me because these things may be big, but these things aren't bigger than my God.

And what you're gonna look up and you're gonna see is that guess what?

In the midst of all the things that you've got going on in your life, you put God first, it fits.

It's not about how big.

It's about the order.

My question to you is this Are you putting God first?

Are you building his kingdom?

And if so, and you trust his word, all these things will be added unto you.

I got a text message shortly after the series that we had this past year called Above and Beyond, where so many of you made commitments to honor God with your finances.

It's truly been incredible to see the response of our people, of you, many of you that made commitments have been honoring those, and I'm sure you're seeing God's blessing.

We'd love to hear those stories.

But others of you maybe made commitments, but you haven't been following through.

Let me just use this as an encouragement for you to be faithful in that.

But I got a text message from Yadira Mendoza.

Here's what she said.

Just want to share a small testimony with you regarding the Above and Beyond series.

A little background first.

You see, my parents never really donated consistently.

We actually didn't attend church consistently either, so I didn't grow up knowing how important tithing is.

I've been working on being consistent with my tithing, and after the series, my next step is to set up recurring giving.

You see, I only tithe on the days that I attend church, which isn't every Sunday.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I received an email advising me that my monthly insurance for my vehicle was going up$700 a month.

I already paid$228 a month.

There was no way that I could afford this.

Today I received an email from my insurance agent saying that she shopped my insurance around and found me a cheaper insurance.

I will now be paying$100 less than I was paying to begin with.

Small victory for others, huge victory for me.

If this isn't a sign from God, I don't know what is.

With this being said, I signed up this Sunday for recurring giving because I do believe that God is speaking to me.

Yadira didn't just save money on insurance.

She discovered that God cares about the details of her life.

She texted back and said, Pastor, when I started giving him my finances first, he started showing up in every area of my life and all over my family.

How many of you need God to show up in the details of your life?

When you put him first, all these things get added to you.

How about the story of Vicky Carrier?

Vicki avoided church for 50 years, five decades, because she had turned off from church as a child.

A couple of years ago, she felt compelled to read the Bible, and so she started reading the Bible on her own.

She then had a friend who said, Hey, I want to go visit this church called United City Church.

Would you go with me?

She wasn't going for herself.

She was going to be nice to her friend.

She hasn't stopped coming.

She comes every week.

She joined a life group.

And earlier this year, Vicki Carrier got baptized here at our church.

She now serves on a serve team preparing prayer blankets for those people that are in the hospital.

And she would tell you that her life has totally changed.

That's what happens when you stop building your own kingdom and you start building his kingdom.

Now her whole family and her friends are watching this transformation, and several of them have started coming to church because of the change that they see in her.

And Miss Birdie this morning.

Getting baptized.

Vicky's friend.

Vicki invited.

She came and this morning got baptized in front of all of you in this service.

Praise God for that.

How many of you have family members and friends who need to see God's kingdom living through you?

All these things.

How about Clint and Katie Godby?

Clint and Katie grew up in church, but they fell away.

They weren't going for many years early in their marriage.

They decided after they had kids that they wanted to raise their kids in church.

They'd had somebody that mentioned United City to them, and so they came and they visited the church.

Clint had been around church enough to know that he knew this.

He really wasn't following the Laura, but he said, I want a church that preaches the Bible.

And it just so happened that that specific day, God had led me to preach a message, and we talked about the emphasis, the fact that we're grounded and we're going to be leaning on and we're going to be preaching from the Word of God here at United City Church.

And he said, He knew this is our church.

This is where we're supposed to be.

He then went to growth track, he and Katie both.

They were baptized on October 16th, 2023.

Clint immediately jumped in, started serving on our first impressions team.

Katie jumped in serving in our youth.

Then back in 2024, at the very beginning of the year, we put out this challenge.

We said, hey, we want to encourage every person in this congregation to read God's word.

And we gave out these little booklets that had a Bible reading plan.

And for the very first time in their lives, in 2024, Clint and Katie Godvey both read the Bible through cover to cover.

Clint now leads our first impressions team.

Katie's one of our best youth leaders.

They would tell you that their whole family, their whole life, their view of work, their view of marriage, their view of parenting, every decision that they make has radically changed.

Why?

Because whenever you put God first, when you build his kingdom, when you trust his word, all these things will be added unto you.

Would you bow your heads and would you close your eyes?

Started today talking about all the decisions that you'll make.

Here's the truth.

Every choice that you make is really answering one fundamental question.

Who's in charge of my life?

If you've been trying to navigate life from the rim instead of the center, today is your chance to change that.

Maybe you've never made Jesus the Lord of your life.

Maybe you have made him the Lord of your life, but you're living like you're the center hub instead of him.

Either way, God is offering you a different way, his way.

I'm going to pray, and what I do, if you need to make Jesus the center hub of your life, for the first time, I want to ask that you come forward.

You give your life to Jesus today.

We want to lead you through a prayer.

We want to talk with you, answer questions about what it means to have a relationship with Jesus.

Others, if you need to come and be baptized, this is your next step.

It is never too late.

Follow Jesus.

If you've given your life to Him, but you've never followed through in believers' baptism, would you come and let us schedule your baptism?

We're baptizing five more to our next service.

Others of you need to join United City Church.

This is your church home.

You need to make it official.

You need to solidify this today.

Maybe others need prayer today.

Maybe you know what needs to be done, but you just need to do it.

Maybe you have a need.

Some of you need to stop trying to manage everything and start trusting his navigation.

I want you to step forward for prayer.

This isn't about perfect people making perfect decisions, it's about surrendering, surrendered people following a perfect God.

Father in heaven, I pray that you would move in these moments.

Call people to yourself.

Pray, God, that you would give people boldness and courage to follow you.

Thank you for what you have done for us.

Thank you for the way that you have met us.

Thank you for the fact that we can call upon you and you will hear us when we seek you with all of our hearts.

May we do that in these moments.

It's in Jesus' name I pray.
