Hebrews chapter 10 is where we're going to spend a little bit of time.

It is really, really good.

Just I don't know about you, but this is going to be a busy week for us.

It's going to be a busy feel like it's been a busy month.

And just the opportunity just now, just to seemingly slow down just a little bit and be reminded of kind of the point.

It's really, really good.

It's really, really good.

Jesus, we love you.

You are the one that our heart adores.

I hope that that is the case for you, that you're not just going through the motions, kind of singing that.

Maybe you're here today, and honestly, you're you're checking it all out.

I just want you to know he's done something in my life and many of the people that are around you's life, and we are not the same.

Like we are totally different people as a result of that, and we would love nothing more.

In fact, I've been praying for you all week if that's your story.

That you would have the opportunity in the midst of the service today to be able to know about the one that we give our lives to, because he's changed our lives in every way.

Hebrews chapter 10 is where we're going to be.

I do want to take an opportunity to greet those on the other side of the camera.

I know we got a bunch of folks that that are uh watching us online.

We also, though, I got we we get emails back and forth uh and and notes, handwritten notes that get sent to us from prisoners where we stream our services uh all over the country.

I got a I got a note from New York, uh, I got a note from Florida, and a note from Kennedy, Texas.

We got people all over the place.

Praise God for those on the other side of the camera, talking to us about our services and our series and how much they're enjoying it.

And it's just the most crazy thing I've ever experienced in my life.

And so just know we we appreciate it and so grateful to have this message to be able to be brought to you.

We're in a message series uh that we're calling Born for a Purpose, and we're looking at trying to answer the question: why do we do all this manger stuff?

Why do we do all the wise men?

Why do we do all the Christmas?

Why do we celebrate this?

We know, of course, the what, but I want us to consider the why.

Why did Jesus have to be born?

Why was he born?

Today I want to look at one verse of scripture before we get into Hebrews uh in Matthew chapter 1, verse 21, and this verse answers that question.

Matthew 1:21

There's many times throughout God's word when it helps tell us the reason why Jesus came.

And this verse is one when the announcement was given to Mary that you were going to have a son, and this is what his life's gonna be all about.

The angel tells him, tells her in Matthew chapter 1, verse 21, it reads like this it says, She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

Here's the purpose, for he will save his people from their sins.

That's why he was born.

To save the people from their sins.

Here's what I want us to consider then today is just this.

If Jesus came to save the people from their sins, how do I know if I'm in the list?

How do I know if I'm included in that?

Essentially, what I want to answer is this question.

Maybe you've struggled with it.

How do I know if I'm saved?

If Jesus came to save the people from their sins, how do I know if that means me?

Maybe your story is similar to mine.

I grew up in a Christian family, I grew up with Christian parents.

I don't know anything about life other than being a part of church and being a part of knowing who God is and that he loved me and parents loved me and all of these things.

It was just a natural part of my experience.

And so I remember whenever I was challenged, and you had to sit down and write out your personal testimony.

I always got really nervous when that question got brought up.

The idea was this you're supposed to write what your life looked like before Jesus.

You're supposed to look right what your life was like when you met Jesus, and you're like you're supposed to write down what your life looks like after Jesus.

Here's my problem.

I don't have a before Jesus moment.

I don't even know what that is.

Like I've just kind of been born into it.

Like I just from the very get-go, I mean, I can't I can't even begin to describe how many times I heard the gospel from my church and from my family before I was the age of 10.

And so, because of that, whenever they would say, you would have an I remember in middle school or I remember high school or even college, people would stand up there, and a pastor would say, Do you know the date?

Do you know the time?

Do you know the location of where you were when you came to Christ?

And here was my problem.

I I don't.

I remember a moment when I was around six.

I may have been a little bit older than that, I may have been seven.

I'm not positive exactly.

I remember, though, being in the front yard, I was dribbling a basketball, my mom was sitting in a lawn chair, and she talked to me about Jesus.

And for whatever reason, that particular day when she talked about Jesus, it sounded different than all the other times I'd heard about Jesus.

But I don't remember that night having some kind of moment where I prayed and like heaven opened up, and all of a sudden they're like, you are saved.

Congratulations, kind of a thing.

And then we moved, I don't I don't remember that.

I do remember going to my parents and talking to them about, hey, I think I'm in on this Jesus thing.

And they celebrated with me and they walked me through that.

And I remember going to the church and talking to somebody there, and then I remember going to get baptized, and all of those things are really significant.

But if you were to ask me what's the moment, what's the date, what's the point in your life when you move from death to life, I don't have a good, solid, clear answer.

So because of that, hang on, hang on, hang on, hang on.

Hang on.

Because of that, I remember in high school at times doubting maybe I'm not safe.

Like maybe maybe I didn't do it.

Like I my parents' faith can't be my faith, so do I actually have?

I mean, I just kind of I these questions that seemed irrational, but at the end of the day, I felt them deeply.

Maybe I'm not the only one that's probably experienced something like that before.

Have you ever had moments in your life whenever you you you think you're a believer, but all of a sudden you're wondering, but what what if what if I didn't?

What if what if it didn't stick?

What if it didn't what if it wasn't true?

Maybe you went along and you grew up and and your parents were all about the church, and then you went to some class, and then when you were 13, you were told, hey, guess what?

Now you're a Christian, but guess what?

Nothing seemed to change, nothing seemed to alter, and so now you're kind of wondering, well, like, did that work?

Maybe your story is that you're a new believer, and so you you come to Christ recently, and so you clearly know what your life is like after uh or before you became a follow Jesus.

Now you're following him.

Now the big question you have is well, what's life gonna look like going on forward?

Like, is this gonna stick or is it gonna at some point go away?

Maybe for some of you, your story is you walked an aisle, you signed a card, you went to a conference, or you went to a camp, you went to a vacation Bible school, and you raised your hand when the pastor said you should, and you walked forward and you signed all of that, but you've been living like hell ever since.

And so now you're wondering because your parents all told you, and maybe because the pastor of the church told you that, hey, you're saved, but guess what?

There's been no evidence, no fruit, no nothing in your life that would suggest that.

And so now you're looking here and you're wondering, well, what did that did that count?

Or did it not?

How do I know if I'm saved?

If Jesus came for the sole purpose of being able to save the people from their sins, how do I know if I'm on the list?

I want to look at Hebrews chapter 10 and want to answer that question for you.

But here's what I want us to see.

In this passage, we're gonna look at something you're supposed to trust that happened in the past, you're supposed to look for evidence in the present, and you're supposed to have confidence about something in the future.

Let's begin reading this, Hebrews chapter 10.

Let's pick up in verse 10 says this.

And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.

For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us, for after saying, This is the covenant that I will make with them, after those days, declares the Lord, I will put my laws on their hearts and write them on their minds.

Then he adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.

Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

You may be wondering, Pastor, I don't know if you know, but this passage doesn't have the wise men in there at all.

Okay?

There's no shepherds.

Where's Christmas?

All right?

You got to stay with me because what I want you to see, we talked about a little bit last week, is that you cannot separate the manger from the cross.

You can't separate uh Christmas from Easter.

The baby born in Bethlehem was actually born to save us, and the only way he could do that was by dying for us.

Every Christmas card, every nativity set, every carol about silent night and the little Lord Jesus is ultimately pointing to a cross 33 years later.

And this Hebrew passage helps us see how Jesus is able to fulfill what he was born to do, which is to save the people from their sins.

And at the same time, it can give you confidence to answer that question.

How do I know if I'm saved?

First thing you got to do is this write this down.

You have to trust something in the past.

You've got to trust something in the past.

The Old Testament, uh, God establishes this sacrificial system.

There were specific instructions about all different types of sacrifices.

There were goat sacrifices, there were uh bird sacrifices, and lamb sacrifices, and bull sacrifices, there was a meal offering, there was a drink offering, and each one of these sacrifices pointed to a specific sin that had to be paid for.

I'm actually in my Bible reading right now, I'm in Leviticus.

It is riveting.

I'm just telling you that right now, all right?

Really good stuff, okay?

And it's amazing how how detailed you find all of the different descriptions of the potential sins people could make and the ways in which the instructions were given to pay for those individual sins.

I mean, it is absolutely incredible.

And what you consistently see is this theme that with every lamb slaughtered, with every goat whose blood is shed, with every sacrifice that's made on the altar, it's pointing towards one that would be the ultimate sacrifice so that all of these sacrifices wouldn't have to happen anymore.

The idea was that they paid for the sins temporarily, but they didn't pay for the sins for going forward.

And as a result of that, there was just this continual process where God gave the people the law, showed them how when they break the law, these are the ways in which they become made right with God through a sufficient sacrifice.

Hebrews chapter 9, verse 22 says it like this Indeed, under the law, almost everything is purified with blood.

And without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.

This system was set in place for generation after generation after generation, and its idea is that blood had to be shed in order to pay for the sins of the people.

It was a significant thing.

Whether it was a small sin, there was an idea for that, and it was a big sin, it was an idea for that.

And then there were sacrifices for all the sins you forgot, in case you didn't remember to bring it back up.

I mean, it's a very detailed system, and in light of that, they've got this group called the priest, and their job was to make the sacrifices on the altar.

Very bloody, very dirty job, okay?

But these priests had been given all of these instructions about their decor.

They were given all of these instructions about the utensils they were to use, they were given detailed specifications about the furniture that they were to have in the room.

All of this stuff was mapped out, all of this stuff was planned out, and in all of the provisions that God gave the priests to be able to carry out the sacrifices for the people, there was one glaring omission, and that was a chair.

It wasn't because the priest didn't need a chair.

Can you imagine how exhausting it would be to have to make sacrifices day after day after day after day, hour after hour after hour after hour?

The reason there was no provision of a chair is because there was never enough time to actually take a break and sit in one.

Because the sins kept piling up.

The sacrifices had to be made.

The people never had like a week off where they stopped sinning and they didn't need any sacrifices done.

No, it was just a constant, continual thing, which is why that sticks out when you read Hebrews chapter 10, verse 12.

Look at what it says.

But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he did what?

He sat down.

You want to know why he sat down?

Because he's done.

What this shows us is that the priest could never take a break, and so they always had to stand because the work was never done.

But Jesus could sit down because the work that he was born to do was fulfilled and completed when he offered his life as a sacrifice on the cross for you.

Can you imagine being a priest back in that day when Jesus was born?

You may have no idea that like your whole livelihood is about to get taken out.

It's like AI is about to take over the world and half our jobs, right?

The priest is here having no idea that his whole life's livelihood's about to be taken out because there's this baby that was born who all of a sudden comes in and takes over the role of the priest.

Folks, what I want you to see is that you would never have known that this baby born in Bethlehem was going to replace everything that you've been doing.

But it shows from the very get-go the swaddling clothes that wrap baby Jesus and the manger foreshadowed the burial cloth that would one day wrap his body after the cross.

From birth to death, from the stable to the tomb, Jesus was born for this purpose.

The angel told Mary, her son, that he would save the people from their sin, and that's exactly what Jesus did for you.

All of the sin represented by the animal sacrifices, all of the sins that you and I have committed and have yet to commit, they are finished, they are paid for, they are done.

He is the center of human history because he was born to be the perfect sacrifice.

What does this have to do with whether we are saved or not?

How does this play into it?

A lot of times, if you were to say, Hey, do you do you think you're saved?

You're gonna answer that question based on performance.

You're gonna say, Well, I mean, I had a really good year.

I mean, I really kind of felt like I really acted like a good Christian.

I'm not perfect, but I mean, I feel like I'm doing better than I am worse.

Or maybe you're gonna talk about, well, uh, I, you know, I these are the things I'm doing well, these are the things I'm not doing well, and you kind of gauge it based upon your performance.

And so, therefore, the assurance of our salvation seems to be based more on how we think we're acting as a Christian than anything else.

With all due respect, I want to make it clear to you salvation is not about you, which is a freeing thing because here's what this means: this means if I had a good year or a bad year, if I had a good week or a bad week, I'm trusting and my salvation is secure, not on my performance, but based upon an event that happened in the past that I'm trusting in.

Folks, why is that significant?

Because that also means that I don't have to add to it.

It's not like God looked over resumes and thought, um, no, not good enough.

Uh I should have him on the team, you know, and that's why he decided to choose you.

That's not how that works.

No one was good enough.

No one was worthy.

All of us needed the sacrifices, but Jesus, because of what he did on the cross, I can now trust in him and I don't have to add to what he's doing.

I can live my life as a thank you and not as a hey, I'm gonna add to it, and you're really glad you have me with you on the team.

We're going through um, we just finished up kind of year in review season with our team and our staff, uh, our staff team, and I got the leadership team to do uh a review on me.

And man, that's a kind of a kind of a nerve-wracking thing, is it not?

I mean, just if you've ever done that, even if you think, I think I'm doing good, but you know, it's always interesting to hear that.

And whenever you'd go through a review, they tell you some things that you're doing really well, right?

And you never pay any attention to those, and then they tell you the things you need to work on, and gosh, it just kind of cuts.

I think some of us treat our relationship with God like it's a year-in review.

And we somehow think he's pleased or not with us based upon how we're performing.

Like somehow he's like, you know, I saved you back in 24, it was good.

25's been rough.

Rough.

You're on probation for 26, we'll reevaluate in 27.

It doesn't work like that.

He knows we're a mess.

And if I put my trust in what he did, then it means that I'm not graded on how I do.

Because if that's the case, I would never measure it.

But instead, I can answer with certainty, I I know for sure that I'm saved because this is what Jesus did for me.

And when Jesus looks at me, he says he sees his perfect record on my account.

He doesn't see my mess ups and attempts to be able to experience his grace in my life and to apply those things in the way that I live.

You may be saying, Okay, I know this is true, but how do I actually know?

Because sometimes I don't feel like I'm saved.

Like sometimes I have doubt, sometimes I have guilt, sometimes I have struggle.

It doesn't seem like someone who knows that they're saved should experience that.

I want you to look again at Hebrews chapter 10, verse 14.

Hebrews 10:14

It says, For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

If Jesus came to save the people from their sins, that was the mission of why he was born.

How do I know if I'm saved?

I've got to trust God's work, I've got to trust what Jesus did in the past.

Second thing I want you to see though is this I've got to show evidence in the present.

I've got to show evidence in the present.

When someone is truly saved, they're gonna see evidence of the Holy Spirit working in their life.

Hebrews 10, 14, look at what it says.

There's a lot of different words that are in this progressive participle, is what it's called in the Greek language, which means this an active, ongoing thing that is taking place.

It references that God is presently, actively perfecting, He is making holy, He is sanctifying those who positionally have been made perfect, meaning this my standing before God is that I am saved, but in the meantime, he's still working it out in me.

Which means that when I struggle with sin, that is an evidence of the goodness and the grace and the mercy of God because before I didn't even care.

Now I'm at least struggling with it.

It bothers me.

I feel conviction.

I begin to feel when the Spirit is revealing to me things that, hey, I I need you to know we're gonna work on some things.

Uh let me encourage you at the beginning of next year, we're gonna hear a lot more about it.

We're gonna do 21 days of prayer starting on January 5th, which is the first Monday of the year.

We're gonna ask for you for 21 days to join us in prayer.

We're gonna be giving you some guidance to do that.

And the last seven days of that 21 days is gonna be our fast that we've been doing the last few years.

So I want to encourage you to join with us in that fast.

And what I've discovered is every time I do an extended fast, what I what I go in is God, I need you to do this, this, this, and give me clarity on this and this.

And I leave with him saying, Chris, you need to work on this, this, this, this, this, this, this, and this.

When you draw near to the presence of God, conviction is normal and natural for you to experience.

It's actually a blessing because it shows that God loves you so much, He doesn't want you to stay the way that you are.

He instead wants to perfect you and work on you and begin to move in your heart and in your life.

Some of you may think, well, I don't understand, though.

I mean, I feel like if I'm struggling, this must mean that I'm not a believer in the first place.

Look at what the apostle Paul says in Romans chapter 7, verses 18 and 19.

Romans 7:18

These are some of the most amazing, comforting verses in all of the Bible.

He says, For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is in my flesh.

For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.

Can I get an amen?

This is my story.

I want to be different, but I keep messing it up.

I want to see things different and changed, but I keep going back to the same things that I've always done.

Paul suggests this if you have the struggle, that is evidence that you're a believer, not an evidence that you're not.

Which is comforting because some of you find yourself in a place where you're like, well, I don't, I don't know why I'm still struggling with this.

And I would tell you, if you didn't struggle, that's when you need to be scared to death.

In fact, some of you, if you walked an aisle, you signed a card, you did whatever it is that you did whenever you were growing up, and you've been living in such a way where you've seen no evidence of conviction, you in fact would even say, I don't even care what I'm doing.

It makes no difference to me whatsoever what God thinks about this.

You need to know this.

Do not rely upon your signing of the card at six years old.

You instead need to go seek Jesus and find him because he's looking for you and he's not going to judge you, but he does want to save you.

But if I am struggling with sin, I need to recognize, man, this is a gift from the Lord.

As I draw near to him, he begins to show me more and more of things in my life that need to change.

Some of you may be experiencing doubt.

Or you're beginning to wonder if you haven't seen God perform miracles in your life, or maybe you haven't felt like God is answering, or maybe God is responding to your prayers like you thought.

So you begin to doubt and wonder if you're a believer.

Greer, a pastor in North Carolina, says this faith is not the absence of doubt, it is continuing to follow Jesus in the midst of doubt.

Don't let doubt cause you to experience guilt and fear.

Rather, let it press you more into Jesus who will work in and through your doubts to even greater faith.

This doesn't mean that you don't have trials.

It doesn't mean that you don't have struggles.

God promises that you will.

But let me just beg you, if you're in the midst of one of those seasons where it doesn't feel like God's speaking to you like you wished, I would tell you, you press into the Lord, you don't pull away from Him.

You allow yourself that pursuit to be the very way that God ministers and comforts you in the midst of your difficulty.

Folks, we must recognize that in the midst of our doubt, God is working and showing evidence that He's doing something, that He's moving, that He's causing you to want to know Him more, He's causing you to expose and deal with your sin, and He's drawing you more towards Himself.

This is how Jesus fulfills what He was born to do.

He has saved you, He is saving you.

But the question you may be wrestling through is well, how do I know like it's gonna stick?

Like, how do I know it's gonna be completed?

How do I know when I get to heaven it's actually gonna be fulfilled?

Let me take you back to a prophecy about Jesus' birth that helps give some insight into this.

Isaiah chapter 9, verse 6 and 7.

Isaiah 9:6

It says, For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder.

His name shall be called wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

A great Christmas verse.

Let me show you the power though that comes in the beginning of the next verse, verse 7.

Of the increase of his government and of peace, there will be no end.

The same prophet who predicted his birth 700 years before it happened also predicted that his reign would have no end.

This isn't just about what happened 2,000 years ago in Bethlehem.

It's about what he is still doing today and what he will complete in the future.

Look then in light of that at Hebrews chapter 10, verse 10.

Hebrews 10:10

It says, And by them will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Verse 14 for by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

How do I know if I'm saved?

I've got to trust something in the past, I've got to show evidence in the present, and then finally I should have confidence in the future.

I have confidence in the future.

This is the bold claim that God will be able to complete what he started for all time.

Yes, he died on the cross in the past, he's showing an ability to work in the present, but based on the promises and the character of my God, we can have confidence that he will finish what he has started in the future and he will sustain us until the end.

John chapter 6, write these verses down, verse 37 through 39.

All that the Father gives me will come to me.

And whoever comes to me, I will never cast out.

For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me.

But raise it up on the last day.

Those who are his, he will keep.

John chapter 10, verse 27 and 28.

John 10:27

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.

I give them eternal life and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.

Every time I drop off any of my kids at school and I pull away from that parking lot, I pray, God, would you let my kids hear your voice today and know it.

Romans chapter 8, verse 38 and 39, for I am sure that neither death nor life, neither angels nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

There is nothing that will ever undo Jesus' once and for all sacrifice.

There's no new revelation that's going to discredit it.

The love of God thrown shown through Jesus is forever, and it can give you confidence as you face the future.

Philippians chapter 1, verse 6.

Philippians 1:6

It says, and I'm sure of this that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

I'm not a big New Year's resolutions guy, I'm a big goal guy.

And I begin to think through what this looks like for me next year as I'm thinking through what to do.

Many of you may be that way.

Statistics are pretty bad on the New Year's resolutions.

People have a lot of things they want to start.

Very few have the ability to actually finish.

I want you to know that's not how God works.

When that angel told Mary her son would save his people from their sins, there was a divine promise.

And 33 years later, Jesus said, It is finished.

From the manger to the cross to the empty tomb, every single thing was planned.

And our confidence that Jesus will complete what he started is because we can live with joy and hope and confidence.

Why?

Because we know he has a track record of fulfilling what he has started.

Maybe you came expecting a feel-good Christmas message.

But the real hope and peace of Christmas comes to understanding the why Jesus was born and the how of how he would do it.

He was born to die for your sins.

The greatest gift wasn't wrapped in paper, it was wrapped in swaddling cloth.

And it was laid in a manger.

The gift that was sacrificed, the gift was sacrificed himself for you.

Would you bow your heads and would you close your eyes with me all across this room?

Those watching online, please do the same.

That Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.

Jesus came to save sinners.

The question is, has he saved you?

The Bible says that we are all sinners, that we all fall short of God's glory.

It says that the wages of that sin, the payment, the punishment, is death, separation.

Blood had to be shed to pay for what you did.

But God loved you so much.

For your sins.

That alone was amazing in and of itself.

But he went and he rose from the dead three days later.

He defeated sin.

He defeated death.

And he now, not because you earned it or worthy of it, but because it's a gift, he wants to extend to you an invitation to receive into your life, to have eternal life, to know with certainty that you're saved.

If that's you today, I want you to pray this simple prayer of faith with me.

Say these words right where you are, dear God.

I want you to forgive me of all of my sins.

I want you to change my life.

I believe that you sent your son Jesus to die on a cross for me.

I believe that you rose from the dead.

And I place my trust in you.

Ask you to come into my life.

Save me.

Continue to keep your heads bowed and your eyes closed.

The Bible says, At this moment, you have been changed.

You may not fully understand, you may have questions, that's okay.

We want to help walk with you.

Just a moment, we're all gonna stand up.

That's gonna be your cue to come forward.

We're gonna have our staff team and members of our prayer team up in front and at the bottom of these steps.

And I just want to ask that you come and tell one of them that you just prayed and gave your life to Jesus.

Maybe you have questions still.

We want to take an open Bible, we want to answer your questions.

I need you to know this God's not intimidated by your questions.

He loves for you to seek him.

And when you seek him, you'll find him when you seek him with all of your heart.

Others of you, you need to come and do a great way to end 2025, and that is by joining United City Church.

You know this is the place that God has for you.

Would you come, would you lead the way today?

Others need to be baptized, like these four that we just saw, giving your public next step of your obedience to baptism.
