With that being said, we have an incredible service planned for you guys because today, as I stated, is missions Sunday.

And 14 people are excited about Mission Sunday.

But that's okay because we're gonna build that excitement.

But what Mission Sunday is, it's an opportunity for us to recognize the multiple layers of what it means to be a follower of Christ.

As a follower of Christ, we are compounded and compelled in Matthew 28 to be people that understand that we need to be developing what God is doing in us, but then also be recognizing what God wants to do through us.

So we're missional church, and here as a church, we've done things locally and globally.

We have partnerships and things that we do here locally that are part of our missional expression of demonstrating the love of God.

But there's also things that we do globally.

You know, I've shared this many times before, but because of your generosity and your commitment, we are able to be a part of feeding 84,000 kids in Zimbabwe every single day.

That's because of you guys.

And so it's important for us to tell these stories and be a part of what the night recognizing what God is doing beyond um our day-to-day lives, because God is doing some incredible things and it truly is something to keep us inspired.

And so, what Missions Sunday allows us to do is to tell stories about what God is doing in our community, but also inviting us to say, God, what do you want me to do with my story?

And so we're gonna have a couple of mission trips, and I'll share about that a little bit in the end.

But the other unique thing about today is you'll notice that the platform is set up a little bit different.

Um, Vinny's over there chilling, waiting for me to wrap this up because he's been standing all day.

Um, but Vinny, we could go back into worship right now.

You ready?

Let's get it.

If I could sing, I would just break out into a song right now.

But nobody wants that.

The spirit of the Lord would leave.

So let me stay on task.

So, what we're gonna do today is we're actually having a five for five.

And what that ultimately is, is that we're gonna invite a couple of amazing people to come up and they're gonna be given space to share for the next five minutes.

Everyone that's coming up are are people that were on our missions trip to Zimbabwe last year, and they're gonna come up and talk about what God has been doing in them and through them.

And so the beautiful thing is that we see in the book of Acts, chapter one, it says that you're gonna receive the Holy Spirit and you're gonna be empowered to become witnesses for Jesus.

Each of these individuals have received the Spirit of God and they've been empowered to go into the mission field.

And I think it's beautiful when we get a chance to hear their stories.

So we gave them this prompt, and that prompt was simply this I knew I needed God when.

So, church family, we are going to lean in, we're gonna amen, we're gonna mm-mm, we're gonna be that's good, we're gonna do all of that to show some love to our amazing community.

So, would you mind showing some love to our incredible team as they come up?

We have Larry, we have Lori as they come up.

What God has done in and through them.

I don't know why people want to call them contestants, but there will be no booing.

There will only be celebrating.

I knew I needed God when.

Good morning, church.

Scott wanted me to uh mention that uh the pastor said there were a couple of amazing people here.

So that we know that's Jazz and Lori, and the rest of us are we're just here.

So thank you.

Thank you for that humbling reminder.

Uh I'm Larry, everyone.

Uh good morning again.

Uh I grew up in a small town uh in the Midwest, uh in a state that is home to the world champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Um as a youngster, I went to church, went to Sunday school.

Uh, but as I got into my teen years, that kind of stopped, that waned.

But even so, I still had a sense of God from these early beginnings.

I pondered in my head that there was a God who created all that was around me the earth, the stars, the universe.

In my head.

After the teen years, uh, I really didn't attend church at all.

But I would still have discussions with others about God, about his existence.

It was more of an intellectual understanding for me.

I wasn't interested in becoming one of those religious folks.

I was living my own life trying to figure things out.

As I was in the figuring things out stage, I met Lori, and we fell in love, and we married, and we had our first son, Lawrence.

So early in Lawrence's young life, Lori and I were invited to church by a couple uh who we had befriended through my job.

Uh, this coworker of mine, uh, who I was surprised went to church at all, and his wife asked Laurie and I to go to church with them.

Uh so we went and we began to attend regularly.

For me, intellectually, uh, this helped me to be a good father.

I would explain or expose my son Lawrence to church life like I had been exposed to it, and at some point he can make this decision, his own mind about God, like I had.

But something happened to me in this small church.

I began to hear God speak to me, not audibly, but more of an impression.

And he said to me, Larry, I'll take care of your son, but what are you going to do with my son?

With Jesus.

The reality of who God was and what he had done for me through Jesus became real to me at that small church.

I realized that it was Jesus I'd been searching for in my intellect.

It was Jesus who made a way for me to live eternally, freed from the burden of my sin in this life and forever.

In that small church, I made a real commitment to follow Jesus.

Spoiler alert here, Lori and I were baptized on the same night.

And we began our life as a Christian couple together.

God impressed upon me the need to live my life in a way that God wanted me to, to put aside some of my old ways and live according to what God revealed to me in the Bible.

Uh God provided me with many opportunities to serve in every church that I'd attended, and that's continued to this day.

My life outside the church was different also.

I expressed my new life in Jesus to those around me in word and in actions, the way I tried to live.

God's peace, his provision, and comfort were with me in every circumstance.

Of course, that's not to say that there were no problems, no challenges, no setbacks, but in every one of them, I felt God's care and his loving hand upon me.

God has blessed me so richly.

He showed me his favor, even though I know I am so undeserving of it.

It's only through the blood of Jesus.

He's allowed me to have a wonderful family and experience their love and support.

He's given me so many opportunities to serve him in the church.

I'm I'm blessed to have been able to teach Sunday school classes.

We laughed uh in the early service about that.

Nobody knew what a Sunday school class was.

That's uh yeah, my age showing a little bit uh also by me standing here.

Um I've ministered as a discipleship teacher, uh, I've played on worship teams, uh, I've served as a deacon, uh, ministering to those who need assistance, and uh, and have served uh on the mission field uh in Africa and Haiti.

In my work life, God has provided uh opportunities for me to live as a Christian in the workplace.

This is not always easy, uh, and in my own strength, of course, not always so successful, but it is necessary for me, for us to be God's person at home, at church, and at work.

In every circumstance, God has shown himself to be faithful, even when my faith and my actions have waned.

My name is Larry, and I recognize my need for Jesus when I took my eyes off my own son and placed them on God's son.

Where I was the eighth of nine children.

Our birth father left our family when I was three years old.

With the help of my grandmother, my mother worked and cared for us the best she could.

My mother remarried a couple years later, a great man who actually was better to us than our own father had been.

I have great memories of him investing his heart into our family, working hard to provide for us, spending time with us, going on walks, taking us to the movies, caring for us when we were sick.

He even moved us across town to a better house than we had lived in before that.

When I was eight years old, he was tragically killed.

The trauma to my mother and our family was devastating.

We were all in need of healing.

Life was incredibly tough, and I always felt fearful and vulnerable that something tragic was out there waiting to happen.

Growing up with these traumas, a stressed-out mother, and not having a father in the home led me to many insecurities.

Some I even deal with today, but by the grace of God.

Um, on the outside, I looked pretty normal going through school and into college and even getting married.

But inside, I was always I always felt uncertain and vulnerable to the life ahead.

I found my I found myself at a place where life had dealt me traumatic blows.

I was making bad choices, decisions out of fear, out of not knowing who I was, and some and sometimes not knowing where to turn or how to process my grief, disappointments, betrayals, and many things that can derail you in life.

My only experience with church had been uh attending a Methodist church during my high school years.

I even sang in the choir there.

However, I really never connected to the message of the Bible or my faith.

It wasn't until I moved out east, I attended a little church in Maryland.

I heard the story of Jesus and how he gave his life for me.

He had paid the penalty for my sin.

And if I would believe on him, I would receive new life.

I responded to this message that day and received and received him into my life.

From that day forward, I've never been the same.

The Bible tells us that our perfect Father, God, loves us unconditionally, provides for our needs, guides us along life's journey, and will never leave us nor forsake us.

As I started to learn more about God and his love, I felt my heart begin to heal.

I realized that God had been there all along, even when I felt most alone.

I began to understand that my worth wasn't defined by my earthly father's abandonment, but by my heavenly father's love and sacrifice to me.

Through prayer, scripture, and the support of my new church family, I began to let go of that pain and embrace the truth of who I was in Christ, a beloved child of God.

God in his mercy and grace has redefined my life.

God has blessed blessed me with many opportunities to serve him in the local church or churches we've been a part of.

I served in Sunday school, vacation Bible school, for maybe some of you have heard of that one.

Yes, and on the crafts committee.

I love to make crafts with the kids.

That was so much fun.

And in many other areas in the church, women's committees, the food pantry, just a lot of it.

But regarding missions, I had always thought there were only certain people who were called to the mission field.

I thought it was like a spiritual gift they had.

But the truth is in the Bible, God commands us all to love our neighbor as ourselves.

And who is my neighbor?

It is everyone all over the world.

In the study experiencing God, I don't know if any of you all ever did that study.

It was around for years.

Love that, Henry Blackby.

It helped me understand that we are to join God at work and whatever he's doing.

This challenged me to go outside my comfort zone and to serve on my first mission trip.

I now look at missions around the world as an opportunity to join God in what he's doing, whatever he's doing.

Whenever I thought I was going to help or to provide something or do something, I always learned so much more about the limitless God we serve and the people he loves.

I also learned about the work he is doing to bring his love, hope, change, and deliverance to people who need him and that may not even have heard of him.

Someone recently asked me what my worldview was.

I was like, I don't know.

What does it say, you know, but a but a worldview is actually simply what you believe or the lens that that you live your life through.

And and so uh I surmise it with I believe God is the one true God, creator of the world and all that exist.

I believe the Lord Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to this earth and died for my sins and everyone's.

I believe Jesus, his spirit, lives in me, he has and continues to transform my life.

My name is Lori Thompson, and I knew I needed Christ when my life felt defined by my past, and my outlook on life was limited to what I could see: the fearfulness, the uncertainty, the void.

Christ, however, revealed I am not defined by my past or by the actions of my earthly father.

I am defined by the love of my heavenly father, Jesus, who saved me and adopted me as his own.

His love is my strength, and in him I will never be the same.

Jesus said in John 14, 27, peace I leave with you.

My peace I give you.

I do not give as the world gives.

Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.

Hi, guys.

How are we?

Hey, I got a name drop.

Oh my gosh.

I'm so excited to be here this morning.

Um, and I am so thankful to Pastor Keith and Pastor Nay and Pastor Jordan for believing in me to share a part of my story with you all.

And so I want to start with this quote from a song that I love, but it's also a way that God speaks to me is through music.

And so he says in this God was the creator without you.

He was the sustainer without you.

But without you, he cannot be the redeemer.

And the reason he loves us is because through us, God can manifest another side of who he is.

He can see our mistakes are not the occasion for banishment.

They become an opportunity for God to reveal himself.

And so today I want to tell a testimony, my testimony, of how God is my redeemer.

And so growing up, I grew up in Jacksonville.

Shout out like James, you get it, you get it.

All right.

I'm not a drags fan though, okay?

Go birds.

Um, but I grew up in a Haitian Baptist church.

My grandparents were the pastors there, and so I grew up seeing um the pastoral uh heaviness that comes with it, but also the joys and the ups and downs of what it means to lead a church and lead a house and a community.

And so my worldview with God was always this black and white.

There was no gray area, there was no up and up and down, and it was just uh if you do wrong, then you get wrong.

If you do right, then you get right.

And I think that system of rewarding was something that was impressed upon us in childhood too.

Um, and so if you've experienced that, come on, say yes, come on.

I'm not the only one.

Um, but it was up until I went into college, and in 2018, 2019, I had my first encounter and experience and built a relationship with the Holy Spirit.

And it was something that was so beautiful and so pure, and it was still tainted by this idea of uh a God that was a dictator, and it was still tainted by fear and shame and guilt, and it plagued my relationship with Christ.

And it wasn't like there was this big moment and this big thing that happened to me, but it was a gradual shift that God was just knocking on the door and I was answering it sometimes, sometimes I wasn't, I'm not gonna lie, and sometimes uh I was present, and it always felt like a list of things that I wasn't able to do.

It was like this list of commands that God was like, no, you can't do this, you can't do that.

And it was always a moving finish line of perfection that I could never meet.

This impacted my self-esteem, this impacted my relationships with people and how I interacted.

And it wasn't until I was at a small group from the celebration church and someone said this to me when we're having this interaction and this conversation about this.

Um, and it comes from Mark 1, verse 9.

Mark 1:9

And it says, At the time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

Just as Jesus was coming out of the water, he saw heaven torn open and the spirit descending on him like a dove.

And a voice came from heaven saying, You are my son, whom I love, and with you I am well pleased.

And in this conversation, I began to understand and to see that before Jesus was moving and doing miracles and healing people, God gave him an identity.

And he gave him love and appreciation and gratitude, and he covered him and his multitude of all that was to come.

And it was something that shifted something in my heart to this day.

And it was these facts about God that cannot be changed, they were immutable, that it is who he is that allowed it to impact me.

And in this mission trip when I went this summer to Zimbabwe, I got to experience what that felt like through the people, through the interactions, through the purity of worship and purity of sacrifice that I saw as I was able to see God move in a tangible way.

It wasn't a healing and a miracle, it wasn't the blind being opened their eyes to see.

It was just God impressing upon my heart through other people, through community.

And it was that moment that I got to experience breakthrough.

That shame was replaced with grace, that fear became love, and that guilt transformed into mercy.

And now with a God and some therapy and just going on this journey, I am reclaiming my identity, reclaiming my original design that He has given us in Eden.

And the person you see today who's loud and boisterous and all these things, that is a reflection and a byproduct of what God has done for me.

I praise from a place of experience, of knowing what it felt like to be lowly, knowing what it felt like to be weary, to be hopeless, to not know who I was.

And that is where God met me continually, every day, over a span of years, and it took one moment for him to change my life this summer.

So, my name is Jasmine.

You already know that.

And I realized my need for Jesus when I looked in the mirror and I didn't know who I was.

Anymore.

I was a little girl who was tainted by trauma and things that happened to me as a result.

But thank you, Lord, that He is my redeemer.

That He has given me a new identity, that He has called me His own, that He has called me His beloved.

So thank you so much for letting me share that with you guys.

Um, my name's Scott Brewster.

Um, I'm here today with my lovely fiancee, uh Liliana, my son.

Uh yeah, let's give it up for Liliana.

I love making her embarrassed.

See, I I see the power that you have now in this, Ambassador.

It's great.

Man, we don't have enough time to get into all that, but okay.

Uh my son uh Adam's here with us as well.

Um I'm thankful for them to be here with us today.

Um who likes a good life hack?

I know I do.

Please, come on.

Just Google Life Hack on YouTube and 40 million uh results come up.

Um that that was really my life.

Um, always looking for the quick fix.

Um I did not uh come from a um Christian background.

Um my family was not involved in the church.

I I doubt we even had a Bible if we did.

It had probably three inches of dust on it somewhere in the basement.

Uh you may not know what a basement is.

I'm from Ohio, so it is literally a house underneath your house.

I'll I'll explain that later.

Um so this this environment um was was really um just alien thing.

Uh it was just uh not not something I was used to.

Um but uh as I was going through this uh time throughout my life, all the way, I would say, until about eight or maybe even nine years ago now, um there was this void um in in my heart.

And uh I knew I needed to fill that, right?

I needed that life hack.

How can I get this void fixed as quickly as possible?

So like all earthly things, I I tried to fill that void um within those moments.

Um could have been purchasing things, cars, what you know, anything, clothes.

Um it could have been the people that I was hanging out with, um, alcohol.

It was just anything I could do to try and fix this emptiness um within me.

And and as I was going through it, it just wasn't enough.

So I got deeper and deeper.

It was almost like quicksand, you know, it was the more I tried to fix and and find a solution, the the further down, and it I just kept getting deeper into uh I felt like my own way.

Um and and so as as I was going through that, um, unfortunately, I I lost um my my job, uh my business.

Um everything was failing around me.

Um my my marriage at the time.

Um my everything um was completely shattering around me.

And I still was just trying to struggle out of that.

And I I could not find what I needed to fix that solution.

So there it was.

I was literally uh in an empty home at this point.

Uh boxes uh were there and literally everything I could just fit into a car.

Um I needed to find a job.

And uh, you know, god God was working in that moment, even in my lowest point, and um provided an opportunity for me in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I doubt there's five people in here that know where that is or have ever visited.

But um O R U, uh Oral Roberts University.

Um so I was able to work in, yes, let's go, one person.

Um so uh I was able to work in the athletic department there, and um, but it was in that moment that I was able to get connected with the right individuals and the right people.

Uh I started to go to church.

Um I was regularly involved there.

Uh a very close friend of mine, Chris Hart, still to this day is the reason that I'm here today.

And in in that moment, I I felt getting involved in the church, being on on staff or not staff, sorry, uh serving.

Um, but uh my my role seemed to be moving towards I wanted to be more involved, I wanted all of God that I could get in that moment.

And and in that in that area is when I was baptized as well.

Um I literally was moving from Tulsa to Memphis, um, and the pastor uh baptized me in his backyard pool.

So I I wanted I wanted that moment.

Um and it was in that moment that I knew that I felt that void being filled.

I I could hear in that moment that God was speaking to me saying you were whole, nothing missing, nothing broken.

And I just want us to take a moment right now and just please repeat after me.

I am whole.

Nothing missing, nothing broken.

Wherever you are right now, please know that.

Please receive that in this moment.

Uh it it is uh not uh beyond me um to say how much I care about everyone in this room.

Uh I may have not met you yet, but please know that that I have deep um deep care for you.

In this moment as well, when we went and we stepped out of our comfort level and we stretched ourselves, we we took that that that one step to to go to Zimbabwe um and to be a part of something bigger than us.

Um I I can honestly say that.

And and to see the joy.

And and to see the joy in in moments that we see as suffering, there was pure peace and joy in those moments.

And it was in those moments that we knew God was working.

Uh and and and you would go there, you would not see much.

Um, but you you wouldn't know it uh for for one moment.

But it was just in that moment that you could understand how much God was working, and you knew that those people were whole, nothing missing, and nothing broken.

As as I I close up and wrap up here, I I just want you to know that as we go forward, um, I I was sitting where you are.

Uh I knew there was something tugging at me, there was that void, there was something that I needed to help fill that void.

And I would encourage you to have an opportunity to speak with any one of us um about the mission trip because I will tell you it is life-altering and life-changing.

And you will see a joy and a peace that would you you would never ever be able to feel here.

So as I close, my name is Scott Brewster, and I recognized that I knew that I needed Jesus when I needed to be whole, nothing missing, and nothing broken.

We joke, we we got it like that, we got it like that.

Um I I don't want to spend too much time because I think you guys have heard heard me enough.

Um so Vinny has come out to remind me that we have to wrap up and get out of here.

That's that's the make it spiritual, but also saying wrap it up.

Um but my hope is that all of us recognize that that every single one of us has a story.

Um, and I think that's the beautiful thing about testimony is recognizing that we all have a story, and maybe there's things that are said that you can identify with, there's things that you're personally sitting through, sat through, they have varying ways that we connect with it.

But I think that's the reason why, in all of the power of God, and again how he invites us to participate in our finite ways to eternal things, Revelation tells us that that they're overcomers by the blood of the Lamb, Jesus first, but by the word of the testimony.

That's something about the blood of the Lamb and us telling our story about it that it helps people to overcome.

You know, I've shared my story multiple times, and so I'll give you the very short version of it.

But but I I was raised in a single mother household.

My biological father left when I was four years old, and my my stepfather came in.

Um, I guess I was probably like nine or ten-ish, and he's the one that raised my brother and I um like his own.

It's the man that I love dearly, he's the one who raised me.

So I had a multitude of men in my life that were uncles and cousins and people that were very meaningful, inclusive of my stepfather.

So my life was pretty much just neutral, just kind of go with the flow.

Life is what it is, it wasn't anything overly traumatic, you're just trying to get through it.

But then it was interrupted by my cousin getting killed in a car accident.

It's almost 30 years ago.

And I remember it was the first time that I began to grapple with my mortality.

Like it, it my life began to think through things beyond the limits of right now.

Because if I'm honest with you guys, I was raised in a Christian household.

My mom is a devout, she she she modeled to me what it looks like to be a prayer warrior.

I'm not sure if anybody has a mom that you will wake up in the middle of the night, mom's just standing over you praying.

I'm like, I'm not sure if you're gonna smother me or pray for me, but one of the but but but that's the kind of mom that I had.

So that was my my ego.

So I knew that I had a I had a uh an adjacent relationship with God.

Like if I don't get in, I'm gonna get in because of my mom, type of things.

And and I also knew that there will come a time in my life when I would be fully surrendered to God.

I'd already envisioned one day I would go to church, I would be compelled by the Spirit, and then I would get up and walk down to the altar with a single tear in my eye and say that yes, today is the day.

So that was what I had envisioned.

I just thought I would do it when I was much older, probably about the age I am now, because I thought to myself, like, I got so much things I want to do.

And in my mind, I thought being a follower of Christ meant basically just giving up any sense of fun that you could ever imagine.

But then God interrupted that.

My cousin got killed in a car accident, and it opened my eyes up, and and it's in that space that I recognized that that somehow, in the words of Solomon, even as a young man, I was like, everything is meaningless if I don't have Jesus.

I gave my life to Christ and it was completely unplanned, but but Megan, who's now my wife, but at that time she was my baby mama.

Hello, um, she gave her life to Christ.

We got baptized, and we never look back.

In that time, we've had a chance to live in different cities for the gospel, different states for the gospel, travel across the globe for the gospel.

And I think my life is complete because I have been able to go into the mission field with every single one of my kids and with my wife, serving in different communities.

And to me, I'm like, that is what this is really all about.

Reason why I think it's so significant is because it wasn't until I went into the mission field that I recognized the power of testimony, the power of getting outside of our comfort zone and trusting God with the results.

So we simply want to create space for every single one of us.

You may be thinking to yourself, Keith, I'm doing I'm dealing with my own stuff.

You know what?

So was I, so were they.

But it's still that moment where we step outside of ourselves and say, but what does God want me to do with my story?

Well, I don't know if I have all the money.

I definitely didn't.

But I stepped out, and somehow people just felt compelled to sow into it that I didn't even have to spend a single dollar out of my own pocket in order for me to go on any of my missions trips, with the exception of one.

I think I was to pay for my daughter, but that's okay.

I'm joking, I'm joking, but it's still true.

Um but God provided.

My point is this if God is leading you to it, he's gonna provide for it.

So out in the courtyard, we we have our missions team, and they would love to answer questions about how you can utilize your story in the mission field.

We have two places that we're going next year.

We're going to Zimbabwe.

Somebody shout out to Zimbabwe.

Come on.

You're gonna be able to see the feeding centers.

Pastor Dixon's been here, and Zimbabwe is near and dear to my heart.

So we're going to Zimbabwe, but we're also going to Cuba as well.

Come on, let's shout out to Cuba.

And this is a big deal because of the way that country was governed.

There was a way that you couldn't get into that country safely and to declare the gospel.

And there's still some challenges there.

But God has made a way for us to go to the highways and byways, as my grandmother would say, to share the gospel, and we can be vessels to do it.

So I want to ask you to stand on your feet.

We're going to wrap up.

And I want to lead us into a moment of prayer.

But I want this to be an opportunity for us to invite the Holy Spirit in and simply ask this question: What does God want me to do with my story?

And maybe there's somebody in Zimbabwe that needs to hear your story that can bring about transformation.

Maybe there's someone in Cuba that needs to hear your story.

We would love to help to be conduits.

So when you go out, you can connect with Jordan and the team, get a pamphlet, gather some information, but let's recognize that there is power in our story.

And I believe God wants you to share it.

Lord, I thank you so much for the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.

We're so thankful for the grace that you make available to us and how you invite us as flawed finite beings to somehow still be vessels that represent you that can draw people closer to you.

It's something that doesn't make sense, but yet you do it every single day.

So, God, I pray that all of us recognize that we have a story.

There's a grace that's in our lives that you want us to share, and that you're calling us to go and share it.
