  1. the book of Colossians, chapter 3. If

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2. you're not sure where that's at, you'll

  3. find it toward the middle end of the New

  4. Testament. Colossians, chapter number

  5. three.

  6. We completed our series in the book of

  7. Acts last Sunday. A rich, wonderful

  8. series that I think really helped set

  9. the focus for our church over the last

  10. couple of years. And next Sunday, we're

  11. going to begin a new sermon series

  12. through the book of Daniel entitled The

  13. Most High Reigns. So looking forward to

  14. introducing that book to you next

  15. Sunday. But I felt like this would be on

  16. Labor Day weekend a good time to breathe

  17. in between series and uh the book of

  18. Daniel will take us probably into early

  19. into midspring.

  20. Um, but wanted to take the opportunity

  21. on Labor Day to address our theme this

  22. year, which is well done. And we've been

  23. talking all year about how we can manage

  24. what God puts in our hands to magnify

  25. Christ's glory. And that's how we hear

  26. well done. And it's fitting on a Labor

  27. Day weekend that we would talk about,

  28. well, our labor, our earthly work that

  29. God puts into our hands. And it's not an

  30. apples to apples comparison this morning

  31. because we do not live in an empire like

  32. Rome that was dominated by slavery.

  33. Some 60 million people, it's estimated,

  34. were slave workers in the Roman Empire.

  35. Half the population was.

  36. And so what that tells us is that it was

  37. not going anywhere anytime soon.

  38. Now, thank God that Christian principles

  39. in the hearts of the vast majority of

  40. the abolitionists

  41. uh were able to lead the way in

  42. abolishing slavery in most parts of the

  43. world. We give thanks to God for that.

  44. God's plan, when you study the book of

  45. Deuteronomy, God's plan was for slavery

  46. to eventually become abolished in Israel

  47. through their love and care for one

  48. another. That was God's plan. But Israel

  49. never followed God's plan. And thus,

  50. slavery continued. And so I just want to

  51. clear off a spot here at the beginning

  52. as we come to talk about this text

  53. that Paul was not he you don't you don't

  54. find anything in the New Testament that

  55. says the church needs to revolutionize

  56. the world and abolish slavery. You just

  57. don't find that. If you follow Christian

  58. principles, you're going to realize the

  59. kind of harsh slavery that the world has

  60. known for ancient history even until the

  61. last couple of hundred years. was not

  62. pleasing to God. And you'll find that

  63. the principles contained in the New

  64. Testament would eventually serve to work

  65. its way toward abolishing it. But what

  66. these people needed in this moment was

  67. to know how do I live as a Christian

  68. in the particular culture in which I

  69. live.

  70. And so we're going to talk about

  71. servants and slavery and masters are

  72. mentioned in chapter 4 verse one. But I

  73. want you to understand that that was the

  74. the half of the Roman world at that

  75. time. That was the workforce essentially

  76. that wealthy patrons had house full of

  77. slavery of slaves who worked in their

  78. fields who worked and managed their

  79. estate. They weren't all just harsh

  80. labor that some of them were

  81. accountants, some of them were

  82. educators. This was just the way that a

  83. lot of people worked was the wealthy

  84. patrons would house the servants and the

  85. servants would take care of particular

  86. needs and in exchange the master would

  87. [snorts] would pay them but would also

  88. feed them and clothe them and have a

  89. place for them to stay. That was the

  90. world that this was brought into. There

  91. are times you might wish that your boss

  92. paid for the clothes on your back. And

  93. there might be times that you wish they

  94. provided you with housing, but you

  95. probably also enjoy your freedom to be

  96. able to come and go as you please. I

  97. would expect, but it wasn't quite that

  98. way. And so I just want you to

  99. understand while we're going to draw

  100. some parallels today, what Paul is

  101. specifically talking about is the work

  102. ethic. It's the work ethic. And I think

  103. as we read our text, you're going to see

  104. how this ties into our theme. Let's

  105. begin reading in verse number 22 of

  106. Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  107. He writes, "Servants,

  108. obey in all things your masters

  109. according to the flesh, not with eye

  110. service as men pleasers, but in

  111. singleness of heart, fearing God. And

  112. whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as to

  113. the Lord, and not unto men, knowing that

  114. of the Lord ye shall receive the reward

  115. of the inheritance. For ye serve the

  116. Lord Christ, but he that doeth wrong

  117. shall receive for the wrong which he

  118. hath done. And there is no respect of

  119. persons. And we're not going to cover

  120. chapter 4 verse one, but I want to go

  121. ahead and read it so you see that this

  122. is a two-way street. Masters,

  123. give unto your servants that which is

  124. just and equal, knowing that ye also

  125. have a master in heaven. This shows us

  126. that God cares

  127. about your daily work. He does. Whether

  128. you're an employee or an employer,

  129. whether they were slaves or masters, God

  130. cares about how we work. I want to

  131. preach to you this morning the title,

  132. how Christian laborers hear well done.

  133. Let's pray. Our heavenly father, we ask

  134. for your help to understand your word. I

  135. pray your spirit would make it clear

  136. where I do not. And I pray that we would

  137. glean the truths that you have for us

  138. and that we would live every day in our

  139. work environments in a way that we could

  140. hear. Well done. I ask these things in

  141. Jesus name. Amen.

  142. >> [clears throat]

  143. >> Tomorrow,

  144. for the 132nd time, our nation will

  145. celebrate the Labor Day holiday.

  146. For most of us, it's like a random

  147. holiday where we just get an extra day

  148. off work, extra day off school, have

  149. some family cookouts, go camping, go

  150. hiking, something of that nature. But it

  151. was originally established to celebrate

  152. the efforts of the labor movement to

  153. secure fairer wages for the daily

  154. worker. It was to celebrate the way they

  155. fought for safer workplaces, for

  156. reasonable hours, and for weekends off.

  157. And so if you have weekends off, you owe

  158. it to that labor movement because they

  159. fought for it. Do you realize even in

  160. the Bible that they had a sixth day work

  161. week and the seventh day was the day of

  162. rest? So if you only work a 5-day work

  163. week, you ought to celebrate Labor Day

  164. every year, right? Labor Day gives us a

  165. chance to remember and celebrate the

  166. workforce upon whose backs this country

  167. has been built and continues to thrive

  168. today. The vast majority of occupations

  169. carry vitally important roles to our

  170. society functioning as we know it.

  171. Whether it be our military service

  172. members defending our freedoms overseas

  173. and here or if it be our police officers

  174. securing our cities software engineers

  175. working on that latest and greatest

  176. iPhone and developing the next

  177. technology.

  178. Or it could be our everyday retailers,

  179. food service delivery drivers or

  180. construction workers, those who work on

  181. farms. Each of those workers among

  182. countless others are vitally important

  183. to our society functioning as we know it

  184. today. But as Christian workers, we have

  185. a doubly important role because of the

  186. fact that in whatever occupation you

  187. serve, you also represent the Lord Jesus

  188. Christ to a world that is lost and

  189. unbelieving.

  190. the person who sits beside you in the

  191. truck or in the cockpit or the person

  192. who is hospitalized that you are caring

  193. for as a nurse or doctor or the

  194. receptionist you walk by at the office

  195. every morning. They are all precious

  196. souls that God loves and that Jesus gave

  197. his life for. Every one of them. They

  198. need salvation.

  199. And I would submit to you that God has

  200. strategically placed you where you work,

  201. not only to provide for your needs

  202. physically, but also to provide for

  203. their needs spiritually.

  204. God's done that. See, when Christ

  205. forgave your sins, secured your

  206. salvation, he also gave you a whole new

  207. life. A life he desires to redeem

  208. entirely. And that includes even your

  209. work life.

  210. See, when Christ changes your heart, it

  211. ought to change how you work.

  212. That's what Paul is getting across in

  213. this letter to the Colossians.

  214. He's showing these believers how to live

  215. on earth in light of the glory to come.

  216. Would you just look back at chapter 3,

  217. verse one? Look what he says. He spends

  218. the first two chapters painting this

  219. glorious picture of the all sufficiency

  220. and preeminence of Jesus Christ. And

  221. then in chapter three he moves to the

  222. practical side of things and he says if

  223. you then be risen with Christ seek those

  224. things which are above where Christ

  225. siteth on the right hand of God. Set

  226. your affection on things above and not

  227. on things on the earth. For ye are dead

  228. and your life is hid with Christ in God.

  229. When Christ who is our life shall

  230. appear, then shall ye also appear with

  231. him in glory. Do you get what he's

  232. saying here? And because of what Christ

  233. has done for you, because you've been

  234. risen from spiritual deadness in Jesus

  235. Christ, you ought to set your heart and

  236. your mind and your eyes upon that which

  237. is above from heaven, on the glory that

  238. is to come when Christ appears. And look

  239. where he starts in verse 5. Mortify

  240. therefore your members which are upon

  241. the earth fornication. He goes into a

  242. list of sexual sins and of violence and

  243. and and slander. And you just get the

  244. perspective that he starts with the

  245. individual life, individual holiness.

  246. And then he's going to uh talk about

  247. church life. Verse number uh 12, he

  248. says, "Put on therefore as the elect of

  249. God, holy and beloved, bowels of

  250. mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind,

  251. meekness, longsuffering, forbearing one

  252. another, and forgiving one another." And

  253. so he begins to deal with their

  254. interpersonal relationships in church.

  255. But then [snorts] and he tops it off in

  256. verse 17, saying, "And whatsoever ye do

  257. in word or deed, do all in the name of

  258. the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and

  259. the Father by him." Then he shifts to

  260. the home.

  261. Wives in verse 18.

  262. Verse 19, husbands. Verse 20, children.

  263. Verse 21, fathers. Verse 22, servants.

  264. That seems like a strange place to put

  265. servants and masters in the home

  266. until you remember how the first century

  267. churches were established.

  268. They were not established in big

  269. buildings like we get to be in today.

  270. They were established in homes.

  271. We see that in Acts 16 in Philippi. When

  272. Paul and Silas went to Philippi, they

  273. went to the outskirts of the city and

  274. they came across a women's prayer

  275. meeting and there was a woman there by

  276. the name of Lydia.

  277. She converted to Christ. And remember

  278. the Bible says that she was a seller of

  279. purple, the color of royalty. That means

  280. she did business with kings and

  281. governors and rich people. And that

  282. means therefore that she was a wealthy

  283. person herself.

  284. She even had a home. And what did she

  285. do? She invited Paul and Silas to stay

  286. with them. And indications are that her

  287. home became the host of the church at

  288. Philippi.

  289. You know what else she would have had in

  290. her estate? Servants.

  291. And what we find in the book of Acts is

  292. that there were whole households that

  293. were saved. And the household does not

  294. just refer to the the man and the woman

  295. and the children. It also refers to

  296. their servants that are in their home as

  297. well. And so now you've got you've got

  298. both masters and slaves

  299. becoming Christians.

  300. And that fundamentally changes their

  301. relationship

  302. because these who have been categorized

  303. as masters and slaves have suddenly in

  304. Jesus Christ become brothers and sisters

  305. in Christ.

  306. These who are on the total opposite end

  307. of the socioeconomic

  308. uh system are now equals.

  309. Paul says multiple times in Christ there

  310. is neither bond nor free.

  311. That's what he's getting at. Can you

  312. imagine how that would have changed

  313. these relationships?

  314. How they treated one another? How they

  315. talked to one another? And so there's a

  316. fundamental shift here taking place in

  317. their socioeconomic system. It's no

  318. wonder really that Paul teaches so

  319. consistently about the master slave

  320. relationship. He speaks about it in

  321. first Corinthians, Ephesians,

  322. Colossians, uh, uh, Titus, Phileiman. In

  323. fact, the book of Phileiman is written

  324. to a slave owner

  325. and Paul sent the letter to him by his

  326. former slave, a runaway slave to be in

  327. fact to be sure. And so you can see this

  328. was a very a very important detail that

  329. that even Peter has to deal with as

  330. well. They're constantly writing and

  331. instructing the church not just how to

  332. abolish slavery, but instructing them

  333. how to live in this new relationship

  334. between a Christian master and a

  335. Christian servant. That's what they

  336. needed in this moment. How do I live in

  337. the system of my culture?

  338. And so while we are so grateful that

  339. eventually slavery was abolished, we

  340. need to recognize here that they needed

  341. instruction from God. How do I live with

  342. my master? And as we saw in chapter 4:1,

  343. how do masters treat their servants?

  344. What did he say there in chapter 4:1?

  345. Give unto them what's just and equal.

  346. You know what that implies? Most masters

  347. didn't do that. [snorts]

  348. And he's saying that something has

  349. changed here. masters, that is no longer

  350. just your slave. That is your brother

  351. and you need to care for his needs,

  352. right? And so, he's going to give

  353. instruction to the masters as well. But

  354. I want us to focus in this morning on

  355. the instructions given to servants.

  356. Once again, while we can't by any means

  357. compare modern employment to ancient

  358. slavery,

  359. Paul's instructions deal primarily with

  360. how we work. And notice his argument is

  361. centered on the reward that awaits the

  362. believer in heaven.

  363. It's very relevant to us today. Paul is

  364. challenging servants to work with what

  365. we have been calling this year the

  366. welldone mindset.

  367. We've talked about beginning with the

  368. end in mind. Living today knowing you

  369. will one day stand before Christ.

  370. That's exactly what Paul's doing here.

  371. You know what this means? that your work

  372. that you do every day is not a mundane

  373. necessary evil in your life as it

  374. sometimes feels.

  375. Rather, it is yet another stewardship

  376. to be managed for Christ's glory.

  377. How do Christian laborers hear well

  378. done?

  379. Well, first of all, Paul's going to

  380. offer practical instruction for how we

  381. ought to work. But then he's going to

  382. provide us with the ultimate motivation

  383. that can help us work in that way. I

  384. want you to notice first of all that to

  385. hear well done, you must work the right

  386. way with the right heart. The right way

  387. with the right heart. Well, what exactly

  388. does that look like? In verse 22, he

  389. says this, "Servants, obey in all things

  390. your masters according to the flesh."

  391. We don't like that word obey, do we? How

  392. would you like it if you went into work

  393. every day and your boss said, "You will

  394. obey my commands."

  395. You're probably going to think,

  396. "Narcissist. What is wrong with you? Who

  397. do you think I am? Your slave?"

  398. Yeah. And so he he says here though that

  399. you need to obey in all things. But this

  400. word translated obey, it just simply

  401. means to hear and do. It it conveys the

  402. idea of following instructions.

  403. See in their day the master would have a

  404. particular way of conducting his

  405. business. He would give very clearly

  406. defined instructions. And the tendency

  407. of the typical slave [snorts] was to do

  408. it either how they thought best

  409. or more often how they thought easiest.

  410. See, they they had this tendency to cut

  411. corners, to get by with the bare

  412. minimum. And because of this kind of

  413. behavior, slaves were often viewed in

  414. that day as morally incapable.

  415. And the reason why is because as I

  416. mentioned with Phileiman and Onesimus,

  417. Onesimus evidently ran away and stole

  418. from Phileiman his his master. And the

  419. evidence is that Phileiman was actually

  420. the host patron for the church at

  421. Colasse that this letter is written to.

  422. I [snorts] don't know if you have this

  423. in your Bible, but I have a note at the

  424. very end of this book that says written

  425. from Rome to the Colossians by Titicus

  426. and Onesimus the slave. And when you

  427. study the book of Phileiman, you find

  428. that Onesimus evidently was saved while

  429. in prison with Paul. Paul led him to

  430. Christ. And Onesimus must have told him,

  431. "I'm actually a runaway slave to a

  432. Christian man back in the church at

  433. Colasse."

  434. And he said, 'Okay, when you're

  435. released, I'm going to send you with

  436. this letter and you need to go make

  437. things right with him. And he calls

  438. Phileiman to receive Onesimus, not as a

  439. slave, but as a brother now that he has

  440. converted to Christianity. And and Paul

  441. even told Phileiman, [snorts] whatever

  442. he owes you, put that on my account.

  443. I'll pay his debt. What that what I want

  444. to bring our attention to is that tells

  445. us that this slave had run away and

  446. stolen from his master.

  447. That's how they were viewed. Morally

  448. incapable.

  449. But Paul's point as he goes through

  450. Colossians 1 and two is to show who

  451. Christ is and what Christ has done in

  452. your life. And that includes these

  453. slaves. That Christ died to redeem them.

  454. He died to change their hearts and

  455. therefore to make them morally capable

  456. and therefore morally responsible

  457. to their masters.

  458. And so on top of that, I want you to

  459. think for a moment that if their master

  460. was a Christian and to become a a

  461. brother or sister in Christ, don't you

  462. think that might lead them to let things

  463. slide a little bit more?

  464. Aren't we equals in Christ? That when

  465. the master comes down on the slave, the

  466. slave might throw that Christian card at

  467. him and say, "Hey, you're my brother.

  468. Don't talk to me that way. Don't treat

  469. me that way. I don't have to do what you

  470. want me to do. Hey, it was just a You

  471. get what we're talking about? This could

  472. complicate their relationships. But what

  473. Paul is writing to them is that Jesus

  474. Christ did not die for you so you could

  475. continue to live like a morally

  476. incapable slave as you always have, but

  477. as a morally capable and responsible

  478. slave today. He says that's how you're

  479. supposed to live. How do you do that?

  480. Obey in all things. Follow their

  481. instructions in all things. Notice he

  482. says even the little things.

  483. But what we notice if you spent any time

  484. working in the modern American labor

  485. force

  486. is that employees today often are not

  487. much different than they were. They

  488. steal from cash registers.

  489. Cut corners,

  490. change their time in attendance,

  491. lie about why they're late for the

  492. fourth time this week.

  493. I I was I worked as a retail manager and

  494. man, some of the excuses that you get,

  495. you might think, man, these people are

  496. just morally incapable. It is so hard to

  497. hire anybody. They won't stop stealing.

  498. They won't stop uh faking time. They

  499. won't stop sitting in the bathroom for

  500. 30 minutes. They won't stop like this is

  501. how you can begin to think as a manager.

  502. And and and the reality is is that that

  503. that that we can struggle with that as

  504. employees even with the little things.

  505. Cutting corners, fudging numbers,

  506. ignoring policy, or taking issues with

  507. corporate procedure or micromanagement.

  508. Doesn't everybody love that?

  509. We love when corporate changes the

  510. system and yet they've never done a

  511. single thing to actually work on the

  512. system and a lot so a lot of times what

  513. can happen is your boss or your CEO they

  514. may have a particular way that they want

  515. business done and you who are on the

  516. front lines you're you're just thinking

  517. these people have never worked in my

  518. position because this is incredibly

  519. inefficient. This is a complete waste of

  520. time. It makes no logistical sense and

  521. it's easy to just do things your own

  522. way. Is it not? Sure.

  523. But Christ redeemed you from that fallen

  524. tendency

  525. and to show you a better way, a way that

  526. is compliant, a way that is kind, a way

  527. that is gracious, a way that is

  528. understanding, even if it makes life

  529. harder on you at times. The call of the

  530. Christian is to follow instructions, not

  531. just in the big things, but even in the

  532. little things. He says, "Obey your

  533. masters according to the flesh in all

  534. things."

  535. But then we notice that Paul puts some

  536. qualifiers on this because it's not just

  537. what you do that's important, but the

  538. heart with which you do it. Would you

  539. look at verse uh 22 there? He says, "Not

  540. with eye service as men pleasers." Not

  541. with eye service as men pleasers. You

  542. know what that means? Don't just obey or

  543. follow instructions when the boss is

  544. looking. That's what he's getting at.

  545. Don't just do it to make impressions, to

  546. advance yourself. Let me give you an

  547. illustration. When I was working in that

  548. retail world at a paint store, [snorts]

  549. I had two different kinds of bosses. One

  550. was a neat freak and one was a slob.

  551. Total slob.

  552. You can imagine how different these

  553. stores looked.

  554. My neat freak manager, his name was

  555. Austin, and he had particular daily

  556. responsibilities for every person. He

  557. had laminated checklists of things that

  558. needed to be done. If we weren't selling

  559. paint or mixing paint or or or making

  560. sales calls, then we were to work on on

  561. these little things. Every single day at

  562. the end of everyone's shift, they had a

  563. specific section assigned to them where

  564. they had to clean up, straighten up,

  565. front face the shelves and everything.

  566. And so mine was the the roller and and

  567. paintbrush aisle. And so every day

  568. before I left, I would go over to that

  569. aisle and I would rearrange and and

  570. shift everything around so that it looks

  571. nice and neat day after day after day.

  572. Felt incredibly tedious. But you know

  573. what happens when the district manager

  574. comes into that store?

  575. We're not running around scrambling,

  576. freaking out. You know, if another store

  577. called said, "Hey, the DM's on your

  578. way." WE WEREN'T LIKE [screaming]

  579. GET THE PLACE CLEANED UP. WE were like,

  580. "Okay, thanks. Good to know." And we

  581. didn't have to do anything to clean up.

  582. Why? Because it wasn't just about

  583. appeasing the the head honchos. It was

  584. about this is the expectation that the

  585. stores will be clean, that they will be

  586. organized, that they will be good to

  587. shop at. And so we took steps to ensure

  588. that we were doing that. [snorts] My

  589. other boss, on the other hand, the slob,

  590. spent no time cleaning ever. And

  591. therefore, everyone who worked around

  592. him spent no time cleaning ever. And I

  593. remember when I first went, I went from

  594. that to that.

  595. And I remember when I first went to this

  596. store, I was trying so hard and it was

  597. like it all hope was lost cuz as soon as

  598. I would clean up a section, somebody

  599. else would come and destroy it, you

  600. know. But you know what happened? When

  601. we got a call, the district manager was

  602. coming to that store. Everybody's

  603. freaking out. The boss is yelling and

  604. screaming and directing people. We're

  605. running around like crazy and customers

  606. are being neglected. Why? Because this

  607. boss was only concerned about looking

  608. good in front of his boss rather than he

  609. was concerned about following

  610. instructions and expectations.

  611. Which one is Paul telling these servants

  612. to be like?

  613. Is he who's he telling you to be like as

  614. a Christian? He's saying Christians,

  615. don't live your life like that. When you

  616. go to work, don't just do things when

  617. the boss is looking and then and then

  618. turn around and do what's wrong when

  619. he's not looking. Don't just live for

  620. when they're they're coming to check out

  621. the store for you. No, he's he tells

  622. them that you need to give your your

  623. time and your attention to doing what's

  624. right, whether the boss is there or the

  625. boss is not.

  626. In other words, Christian, don't be on

  627. your phone all day long when the boss is

  628. expecting you to work.

  629. Don't don't just uh be the kind of

  630. worker who's interested in making

  631. impressions on people.

  632. Don't don't uh when when your when your

  633. boss expects you to be trimming trees or

  634. painting walls or making calls, do what

  635. they expect you to do whether they're

  636. there or not.

  637. Don't clock in when the boss is looking,

  638. but then go change your time later to

  639. make a few extra bucks.

  640. It's wrong.

  641. But that's the kind of behavior that

  642. slaves would do and that's the kind of

  643. behavior that some Christians do. May it

  644. not be so with you friend. Christ died

  645. to redeem you to bring you out of that

  646. to transform and not just your spiritual

  647. life and not just change your eternal

  648. destiny but to change even how you work

  649. on [snorts] a day-to-day basis.

  650. Rather Paul says,

  651. "Not with eye service as men pleasers,

  652. but in singleness of heart fearing God."

  653. You know what singleness means? The idea

  654. is of of simplicity

  655. or sincerity

  656. without pretense.

  657. The idea is that you are working with

  658. integrity.

  659. Not when the boss is looking, but but

  660. instead of only cleaning up when

  661. someone's coming and instead of only

  662. trying to look good, he's calling you to

  663. be good, to be moral, to be honest, to

  664. be upright.

  665. And so that's what he calls us to do.

  666. Not to just work with eye service as men

  667. pleasers, but in singleness of our

  668. hearts, integrity, and honesty

  669. within. [snorts]

  670. And so that means don't steal from the

  671. cash register when no one's looking. It

  672. means don't cheat on your time and

  673. attendance. It means don't lie about

  674. where you about why you were late to

  675. work just to save face.

  676. Can I just tell you, you can only hit

  677. the same train so many times before it

  678. becomes a pattern. That train is

  679. probably there every single day at that

  680. exact time and you're just getting late.

  681. So, you need to rearrange your schedule.

  682. You need to rearrange your routine to

  683. leave earlier knowing you're going to

  684. hit that train uh and so you can get

  685. there before the train gets there. See,

  686. your boss sees straight through those

  687. things. That's what's so funny to me.

  688. Every time somebody would call me when I

  689. was managing that store and I'm going to

  690. be late cuz this happened and my car

  691. broke down, you know, for the 10th time

  692. this month and it's like, you need to

  693. get a new car. You're making enough

  694. money here to trade that thing in and

  695. get a, you know, and so that but that

  696. that's the thing that a lot of people do

  697. is just make excuses. But what it is is

  698. lying. I want you to think about for a

  699. minute.

  700. How does your boss think of Christ when

  701. he knows you're a Christian and that's

  702. how you work? Does it make his name

  703. greater?

  704. Does it magnify his glory?

  705. Or does it make his name smaller to

  706. them?

  707. See, this is much bigger than just work.

  708. This is eternity.

  709. Your work ethic could have a significant

  710. impact on whether someone turns to

  711. Christ or away from Christ. Can I just

  712. ask you, what kind of work ethic do you

  713. model for your boss and your co-workers

  714. around you?

  715. Paul is calling them

  716. to be honest, to have integrity, to do

  717. what's right even when no one's looking.

  718. Singleness of heart. Notice he says

  719. fearing God. Let me just clear up a spot

  720. and say this. When your boss doesn't

  721. know, there's a God in heaven who knows

  722. and who sees. And out of reverential

  723. respect and fear of God, you ought to do

  724. what's right when no one's looking. And

  725. that's not just true at work, by the

  726. way. That's true in your life

  727. personally, in your personal

  728. relationships, in what you do with your

  729. free time. We are called to be people of

  730. honesty and integrity. Nobody loves

  731. hypocrites, right? We want to be sure

  732. that we're not that way either.

  733. And so Paul says then in verse 23, "And

  734. whatsoever ye do, do it heartily."

  735. Do it heartily. The word translated

  736. heartily is the word psyche. It's the

  737. idea of your entire mind, your soul, and

  738. your heart that you're supposed to put

  739. your heart into your work. Don't give a

  740. a half-hearted effort when you're

  741. designing software or writing code or

  742. doing projects. Don't just give the bare

  743. minimum. Put some heart into it. When

  744. you're delivering uh products, [snorts]

  745. don't just aim to hit your number and

  746. don't dillydally around the store or sit

  747. in the truck scrolling on Instagram.

  748. Be efficient. Be a hard worker. Do your

  749. best. Do it heartily.

  750. Whether you're mowing yards or running

  751. drill or trimming trees, whatever work

  752. God has placed in your hand, do it with

  753. your heart day in and day out.

  754. Ecclesiastes chapter 9:10 says,

  755. "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do

  756. it with thy might.

  757. Give it everything you've got.

  758. To hear well done, you must work the

  759. right way with the right heart." What

  760. does that look like? Full compliance.

  761. Not just when the boss is looking,

  762. but out of a sincere desire to do what's

  763. right in your heart and put your effort

  764. into it. Now, let's be honest for a

  765. minute.

  766. It can be very challenging to work that

  767. way every single day of your life, can

  768. it not?

  769. Work becomes so mundane. It becomes so

  770. routine. It becomes just something that

  771. you do, you know, make your paycheck, go

  772. home, go to sleep, go back to work, make

  773. your paycheck, go home, go to sleep. And

  774. and it's like we're on repeat. And so we

  775. just do that every single day. And it

  776. can be so hard. And then we end up

  777. falling into bad habits that reflect

  778. poorly upon our savior.

  779. What can help you believer

  780. not to perfectly

  781. live this way? for none of us will. None

  782. of us are perfect.

  783. But what will help you consistently

  784. work the way Paul calls us to here?

  785. Paul's answer there in verse 23. And

  786. whatsoever you do, do it heartily as to

  787. the Lord and not unto men. As to the

  788. Lord and not unto men. You know what

  789. he's saying here? perform every task in

  790. service to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  791. Every task.

  792. Paul reminds them that while they serve

  793. an earthly Lord, they also serve a

  794. heavenly Lord, the Lord Jesus Christ.

  795. And therefore, they should treat even

  796. the most menial tasks that their earthly

  797. master requires as if they are doing it

  798. in service to Christ. Can I ask you

  799. today, how might it change your work if

  800. Jesus was your boss?

  801. How might that change if Jesus was

  802. reviewing your time in attendance?

  803. How would it change it if Jesus was

  804. giving your annual performance review?

  805. If Jesus was measuring the time of your

  806. deliveries or the notes that you're

  807. required to keep or the effort with

  808. which you stock shelves,

  809. Paul is calling Christian laborers to

  810. labor not as though they are serving

  811. their earthly Lord but their heavenly

  812. Lord.

  813. Why? He gives two reasons.

  814. Number one, reward awaits the Lord's

  815. faithful servants.

  816. Reward awaits the Lord's faithful

  817. servants. Look at verse 24.

  818. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall

  819. receive the reward of the inheritance,

  820. for ye serve the Lord Christ. Do you see

  821. what he's doing here? He's dangling out

  822. in front of them the day when they come

  823. before Christ.

  824. The day when they are about to enter

  825. heaven's gates. the day when they are

  826. about to receive the reward of the

  827. inheritance given to us through Jesus

  828. Christ. He says, "Reward awaits you from

  829. the Lord Jesus Christ." But then notice

  830. he also says that recompense

  831. awaits the unfaithful servants. Verse

  832. 25, but he that doeth wrong shall

  833. receive for the wrong which he hath

  834. done, and there is no respect of

  835. persons.

  836. See what Paul is saying is this.

  837. A performance review is coming to every

  838. Christian.

  839. We will all stand before the judgment

  840. seat of Christ. Let me be clear that if

  841. you are saved, if you have placed your

  842. faith in Jesus, you will not stand

  843. before Christ to answer for your sin

  844. because Jesus took all of your sin in

  845. his body on the cross. Your sin is

  846. considered judged and done with in

  847. Jesus. your your excuse me, your work

  848. ethic

  849. makes no difference on your eternal

  850. standing with God. But it does make a

  851. difference on what Christ says to you in

  852. that moment.

  853. He will either say, "Well done," or he

  854. will say, "Wicked and slothful."

  855. And so we're all going to stand before

  856. him and everything done in service to

  857. Christ will be rewarded, but everything

  858. done wrongfully will be burnt up as

  859. rewards are lost. That's what the Bible

  860. teaches. Paul says in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:10

  861. 5:10, "For for we must all appear before

  862. the judgment seat of Christ, for every

  863. that everyone may receive the things

  864. done in his body according to that he

  865. hath done, whether it be good or bad."

  866. He says, "We're going to stand before

  867. the judgment seat of Christ."

  868. Jesus said this in Matthew 16:27, "For

    Matthew 16:27

  869. the Son of man shall come in the glory

  870. of his father with his angels, and then

  871. he shall reward every man according to

  872. his work."

  873. And isn't this what Jesus said in the

  874. parable from which our theme comes that

  875. after a long time, the Lord will return

  876. and reckon with his servants. You know

  877. what that is? Performance review.

  878. And to the faithful he will say, "Well

  879. done, thou good and faithful servant.

  880. Thou has been faithful over a few

  881. things. I will make thee ruler over many

  882. things." What does that sound like?

  883. Reward.

  884. That God's going to give you greater

  885. responsibility in his kingdom when you

  886. steward your responsibilities on earth

  887. for his glory. But what does he say to

  888. the unfaithful,

  889. thou wicked and slothful servant? He

  890. tells them, "Take the talent from him

  891. and give it to him which hath the 10

  892. talents." And then he says this was his

  893. governing statement of the par parable.

  894. For unto everyone that hath shall be

  895. given, and he shall have abundance,

  896. reward, but from him that hath not shall

  897. be taken away, even that which he hath

  898. loss.

  899. And so Paul is drawing from the teaching

  900. of Jesus to tell believers that a

  901. performance review is coming. And one of

  902. the things that Christ will review is

  903. the stewardship of your work. And he

  904. says there is no respector of persons.

  905. There's no partiality.

  906. God does not play favorites with his

  907. children.

  908. What that means is whether you are the

  909. CEO or the manager or if you are the day

  910. laborer or the cashier or the one

  911. stalking freight. It doesn't matter who

  912. you are, a performance review is coming

  913. from Christ. And based on how you manage

  914. what he placed in your hands, you will

  915. either hear well done or thou wicked and

  916. slothful servant. Now you tell me based

  917. on your work ethic this last week

  918. which would you hear?

  919. We all have bad days

  920. sometimes. We all have bad weeks.

  921. I'm talking about the consistency

  922. with which you work.

  923. Do you obey in all things?

  924. Is it only eye service,

  925. people pleasing,

  926. or is it from singleness of heart,

  927. fearing God? Is it heartily as to the

  928. Lord and not unto men? I'm not accusing

  929. anybody. I'm asking us for some

  930. self-reflection here. How do I work on a

  931. consistent basis? because Jesus Christ

  932. is going to to come and he's going to

  933. catch us away and to glory. But I am

  934. going to stand before him and he's going

  935. to review my my performance and how I

  936. managed what he's put in my hands. How

  937. will he respond to me when it comes to

  938. my work?

  939. Listen, we're not going to be perfect,

  940. but because of Jesus Christ and because

  941. we have his spirit, we cannot allow our

  942. fallen condition to become an excuse for

  943. consistent patterns of rebellion,

  944. laziness, or eye service. Believer,

  945. don't let it become an excuse.

  946. Christ died to redeem you, to change

  947. you, to make you morally capable and

  948. morally responsible.

  949. Paul's whole point in chapter 3 is to

  950. show these servants that they have been

  951. risen with Christ and therefore their

  952. risen condition should reshape how they

  953. work. And so in light of your redeemed

  954. and risen condition in Christ, what can

  955. help you work every single day in a way

  956. that would allow you to hear well done?

  957. Paul's answer is rather simple.

  958. Perform every task in service to Jesus

  959. Christ.

  960. everything you do

  961. every single day as if it's done to the

  962. Lord.

  963. What that means

  964. is that you ought to do every task with

  965. the performance review in mind.

  966. That yes, Christ is going to welcome me

  967. into his inheritance, but first there's

  968. going to be a day of reckoning in my

  969. life.

  970. How did I steward my work?

  971. When you're on the computer designing

  972. that structure, work on it as if you

  973. were designing a temple for Jesus

  974. Christ.

  975. Give it that kind of effort.

  976. When you're stalking, fronting, and

  977. facing shelves, do it as if you were

  978. preparing not for the arrival of a

  979. corporate head, but for the arrival of

  980. the coming king.

  981. When you're trimming trees, do it as if

  982. you're caring for the Lord's garden.

  983. when you're mowing lawns, whacking

  984. weeds, is the Lord's garden. How might

  985. that change the way you work? As you're

  986. as you're nursing, as you're at a

  987. hospital and you're caring for patients

  988. that are weak and broken in that moment

  989. and they're they're struggling and

  990. sometimes they're very impatient. If you

  991. work in an Alzheimer's unit, that can be

  992. very very difficult.

  993. You need to remember that's somebody

  994. that Jesus died for and they need to see

  995. in your life the glory of Jesus.

  996. This isn't my patient. This is God's

  997. patient.

  998. You see what we're talking about here?

  999. We if we're going to live for the glory

1000. of Christ, we must be intentional,

  1001. folks.

1002. We can't just go through our mundane

1003. routine of work and expect to live the

1004. way that Christ calls us to live in this

  1005. text.

1006. Need to wake up every single morning.

1007. Understand your time with God, reading

1008. the word and praying. That's not just a

1009. religious duty that you just do because

  1010. it's what Christians do.

  1011. It's a it's an intentional grace that

1012. God has given to you to help you start

1013. each and every day with well done in

  1014. mind.

1015. That before you go to work, you get up

1016. and you read something in God's word and

  1017. it helps remind you, I'm a Christian. I

1018. belong to God. And you spend time in

1019. prayer and you say, God, I'm going into

1020. the Alzheimer's unit again. Some of them

1021. are vicious. Some of them are very hard

1022. to work with. Help me to be Jesus to

1023. them. Help me to care for them as if I

1024. was caring for Jesus. Think about that

  1025. for a moment.

1026. How might that change? Yeah.

  1027. Perform every task

  1028. in service to Christ.

  1029. But let's remember this.

1030. The only reason any of us have a chance

  1031. to hear well done

1032. is not because of what we've done, but

1033. because of what Christ has done.

1034. He came to earth with a work to do. A

1035. work his father placed in his hands to

1036. accomplish redemption for all mankind

1037. in the hardest way imaginable,

  1038. death on a cross.

1039. And Jesus fulfilled his father's work.

1040. He even said this, "I have come to do

1041. his work." And thank God he did because

1042. it's only through his grace and his

1043. death and resurrection that we can be

1044. saved and have the opportunity to stand

1045. before him. Not at the great white

1046. throne judgment where sinners are judged

1047. for their sins and cast into hell, but

1048. at the judgment seat of Christ where we

1049. are rewarded for everything that we did

1050. for his glory. But we will suffer a loss

1051. of reward for everything we did for

  1052. ourselves.

1053. But the fact we will get to stand there

1054. and enter I just I'm looking back at the

1055. screen there. You're looking at it up

  1056. here.

1057. The fact we get to enter

  1058. that heavenly kingdom

  1059. and receive crowns.

1060. That's not because of us.

1061. And that's why the book of Revelation

1062. says that we're going to take those

1063. crowns that are given to us.

1064. [snorts] Cast him at Christ's feet. Why?

1065. Because it's not about what we did. It's

1066. about what he did. That day is coming.

  1067. Believers,

1068. live with it in mind. As you go to work

  1069. tomorrow morning,

1070. start your day. Oh, not tomorrow

1071. morning. It's Labor Day. Praise God.

1072. Some of you might be going tomorrow. I

1073. don't know. I feel bad for you if you

1074. are. You got a day to meditate on this.

  1075. Tomorrow,

1076. tomorrow is a Sabbath. My labor is done

  1077. in Christ. Amen.

1078. When you get up Tuesday morning, spend

1079. time in the word of God. Spend time in

1080. prayer and ask God, help me by your

1081. grace through the help of your spirit to

1082. work today as unto the Lord and not unto

  1083. men.

1084. If you're not a believer here this

1085. morning, I just want to say to you that

1086. the only hope that you have to enter

1087. those gates is Jesus Christ.

1088. He died for your sin. He bore it all on

1089. his cross and God accepted it as proved

  1090. by the resurrection.

1091. All you must do is believe in your heart

1092. that Jesus died for your sin and rose

1093. again. And the Bible is very clear and

1094. very simple. It says, "Believe on the

1095. Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be

1096. saved." You can be saved today if you'll

1097. trust in Christ. And when you do, he's

1098. going to change your heart. And he's

1099. going to give you the Holy Spirit who's

1100. going to awaken you from the deadness of

1101. sin to a morally capable and responsible

1102. person. And he wants to change every

  1103. part of your life.

1104. And that includes your work.

1105. do it unto Christ that you might hear

1106. well done. Father, we come to you today

1107. and are grateful for the practical help

1108. from your word this morning as I could

1109. see that that the vast majority of us

1110. perhaps every one of us even are

  1111. believers here this morning.

1112. And I pray that we would receive the

1113. help from your word because

1114. how we work is bigger than just us.

  1115. [music] It's about Christ.

1116. And so I pray that you would help every

1117. believer here by your grace

1118. to go to work this [music] week

1119. seeing it as [singing] way more

1120. important than they ever have

1121. and [music] that they would fulfill

  1122. every task

  1123. as unto Christ.

1124. I pray if there are any in here this

1125. morning that have not received Christ as

1126. their savior or perhaps [music] are

1127. tuning in online, I pray that this very

1128. morning they would receive Christ as

1129. Lord and Savior. [music] Would you

1130. please convince them of the gospel by

1131. the power of your spirit and I ask you

1132. to enable us [music] to do all things

1133. for the glory of Christ. It's in Jesus

  1134. name I pray. Amen.
