  107. He is jealous for me.

  108. Loves like a hurricane. I am a tree

  109. bending beneath the weight of his wind

  110. and mercy.

  111. And all of a sudden

  112. I am unaware of these afflictions

  113. by glory

  114. and I realize just how beautiful you

  115. are. How great your affection are for

  116. me.

  117. How he loves us so

  118. how he loves us.

  119. >> How he loves us so

  120. He is jealous for me

  121. like a hurricane. I am a tree bending

  122. the weight of his wind and mercy.

  123. I am unaware of thesections

  124. by glory.

  125. And I realize just how beautiful you are

  126. and how great your affection are for me.

  127. Oh,

  128. how he loves us so.

  129. >> Oh, how he loves us.

  130. >> How he loves us so

  131. Yeah, he loves us. Oh, how he loves us.

  132. Oh, how he loves us. Oh, how he loves

  133. So we are his portion and he is our

  134. prize. Drawn to redemption by the grace

  135. in his eyes. His grace is an ocean we're

  136. all singing.

  137. Oh, hell needs look like nothing to see.

  138. Kiss in my heart just finding the inside

  139. of my chest. I don't have time to

  140. maintain these regrets when I think

  141. about

  142. the way

  143. he loves us. Oh, how he loves us. Oh,

  144. how he loves us. Oh, how he loves.

  145. Yeah, he loves us. Oh, how he loves us.

  146. Oh, how he loves us. Oh, how he loves

  147. He loves us. Oh, how he loves us. Oh,

  148. how he loves us. Oh, how he loves

  149. relax.

  150. Close.

  151. Good morning.

  152. Hello.

  153. have an Easter egg dash. But what

  154. happens before Easter?

  155. Good Friday. Yeah, we are having a Good

  156. Friday service here on Friday 6:30. It

  157. is combined with our DuPont campus. It

  158. is expected to be about an hour long. We

  159. are not doing child care because we want

  160. families to come and worship together

  161. for Good Friday. So, it's going to be

  162. about an hour long. Again, no child

  163. care. When you come, if you are a

  164. regular, if you would please park out

  165. into the grassy part of the parking lot

  166. that is um uh has a gravel bed so you

  167. don't have to worry about getting stuck

  168. out there. But we would love to leave

  169. the front uh parking spots and the

  170. pavement in the back for guests because

  171. we're expecting we end up getting a lot

  172. of neighborhood guests on on um Good

  173. Friday and it's the first time it

  174. happened. It kind of was surprising to

  175. me, but it's not surprising at all.

  176. People who live in the area say, "Hey,

  177. I've been looking at your church and

  178. I've really thought about coming to

  179. church." So, it's really encouraging for

  180. us to have people from the neighborhood

  181. come to church. And we'd love for them

  182. to have seats. So, move up to the front

  183. in and let's leave some of the middle

  184. rows um available for guests. Uh let's

  185. see. The next thing we're going to talk

  186. about, we talked about that egg dash.

  187. So, if you have a kiddo, uh small people

  188. up to fifth grade, they're welcome to

  189. the egg dash. It's going to be after

  190. each of the services. So after the nine,

  191. after the 11 out in the front um towards

  192. the street area, so bring a basket. Uh

  193. we have lots of goodies in the eggs,

  194. thousands of eggs, and it's a dash, not

  195. a hunt. So your little guys can do it.

  196. And the next thing we're going to talk

  197. about is well, we already did that, so

  198. we're gonna Palm Sunday. Okay, today the

  199. kids are doing a great fun craft.

  200. actually many crafts in kids church this

  201. morning because it is a fifth Sunday. Uh

  202. Wes was trying to figure out if I could

  203. figure out the craft, but it might have

  204. something to do with a tomb and a donut.

  205. So, uh if you Yeah, tombs and donuts. If

  206. you didn't get a kid or a donut, kids,

  207. you'll get a donut. All right, we're

  208. going to release kids to kids church. Uh

  209. 1st through 5th, go over underneath the

  210. exit sign over there in this building.

  211. small ones go back into the kids wing.

  212. If you

  213. Hey.

  214. Nah. Nah.

  215. Well, good morning again from all of us

  216. to you.

  217. What a blessing uh to serve alongside so

  218. many of you guys last week at Service

  219. Sunday. I was pretty amazed by and

  220. impressed by uh a couple young families

  221. who were serving with their little

  222. tinies. One strapped to mama's belly and

  223. the other one playing in the dirt and

  224. and uh just so thankful for families

  225. that uh serve together and grab the

  226. vision of the church and go out there.

  227. So uh really thankful. Uh this morning

  228. is kind of fun because I'm going to be

  229. actually preaching at all three of our

  230. services. So, I'll go from here and race

  231. up to Dupont for their 10:00 a.m. and

  232. preach and then race back just in time

  233. to preach for our 11:00 a.m. here. Uh

  234. because this morning I was I was I found

  235. out just this morning I was doing this

  236. because Pastor Mark wasn't able to make

  237. it. Um but if you're a friend of Pastor

  238. Mark's, don't worry, it's not anything

  239. tragic. It's actually something quite

  240. celebratory. And I'll just leave it at

  241. that.

  242. Mystery mystery.

  243. So, we're in a series uh in the book of

  244. Judges. We'll be hitting chapters four

  245. and five today. Pretty exciting. Uh and

  246. uh we have titled the series the

  247. consequences of conformity. And we

  248. definitely have the tendency as human

  249. beings to just become tribal to kind of

  250. become like those who we are with. uh

  251. what whatever the culture looks like,

  252. whatever our friend group looks like,

  253. whatever our schools look like or our

  254. workplaces, we tend to just kind of

  255. blend in when in fact God's word tells

  256. us that we're to be salt and light to be

  257. very different than the culture around

  258. us. Today, we're going to talk about a

  259. little something called FOMO. How many

  260. of you guys know what FOMO is? What is

  261. it?

  262. The fear of missing out. Oh my goodness.

  263. Kevin Pittz has FOMO. I'll just be

  264. honest with you. I have FOMO. If I find

  265. out that there are people having fun

  266. somewhere and I'm not there, I'm like,

  267. why am I not there having the fun? I'm

  268. missing out on the fun. I need the fun.

  269. Where what's happening? Yeah, this is a

  270. very real thing. It's it's uh we a lot

  271. of us experience it in different kind of

  272. ways. What I'm going to present to you

  273. this morning is that I believe that God

  274. wants us to have FOMO

  275. for being a part of his plan.

  276. He wants us to have FOMO for being a

  277. part of his plan. In fact, when we don't

  278. obey him, when we don't join him in what

  279. he's doing, when we lack faith and

  280. courage and kind of hold back and and

  281. watch to see if anybody else is going to

  282. do it, often times that's when we really

  283. miss out. We miss out on the blessings.

  284. We miss out on the victory. And we will

  285. miss out on some rewards even in

  286. eternity. So this morning, I'm going to

  287. challenge you or hopefully God's word is

  288. don't wuss out

  289. so you don't miss out.

  290. Don't wuss out when God tells you

  291. exactly, clearly, plainly, simply what

  292. you're to do, what he's going to do.

  293. Don't wuss out because you don't want to

  294. miss out. You don't want to miss out on

  295. the good things that God can and will do

  296. through you. So, let's jump into Judges

    Judges 4 chapter mention

  297. chapter 4. Hope some of you brought your

  298. physical Bibles with you as well. I

  299. always like to have the words up on the

  300. screen though in case you didn't. And we

  301. always have a table in the back with the

  302. sign that says grab a Bible. Those are

  303. free for the taking if you want to keep

  304. one or you can borrow it for the day.

  305. But let's look at chapter 4 verse 1. I

  306. guess with that I don't need my old man

  307. glasses. Here we go. And the people of

  308. Israel again did what was evil in the

  309. sight of the Lord after Ehood died. And

  310. the Lord sold them into the hand of

  311. Jabin, king of Canaan, who reigned in

  312. Hazor.

  313. The commander of his army was Cicora,

  314. who lived in Heresth, Haguim. Then the

  315. people of Israel cried out to the Lord

  316. for help, for he had 900 chariots of

  317. iron, and he oppressed the people of

  318. Israel. cruy for 20 years.

  319. Verse one is our broken record, my

  320. friends. We've talked about the fact

  321. that there is a cycle in Judges that

  322. seems to happen. The cycle begins with

  323. the Israelites rebelling against God.

  324. And again, they do what was evil in the

  325. sight of the Lord. We had this this

  326. great uh example of a judge. His name

  327. was Ehood. He did some amazing things

  328. for God. He obeyed God and he took out

  329. this wicked, wicked king that was

  330. oppressing Israel. And so we had some

  331. years of peace. The land had rest. It

  332. was such a good thing. But instead of

  333. during the good seasons of life, us

  334. drawing closer to God and thanking him

  335. for the peace that we're experiencing

  336. and the joy and the celebrations,

  337. we tend to get really independent during

  338. those times because we don't necessarily

  339. need God, do we? Well, we don't think

  340. everything's going well. I had a great

  341. week. We're having a good year. Marriage

  342. is good right now. And so, we stop

  343. praying. We stop worshiping. We stop

  344. doing the things that we know God's

  345. called us to do. And Israel becomes a

  346. conformist to to the whole world around

  347. them. What we find out throughout Judges

  348. is what they tend to do when when this

  349. evil is done is they go after the gods

  350. of the people of that land. And the gods

  351. of the people of that land were awful.

  352. They're false gods obviously, but

  353. there's demonic presences that drive

  354. these things. And so the worship that

  355. takes place is things like ritual

  356. prostitution and child sacrifice. The uh

  357. rape, I mean, it was awful. I mean, it's

  358. ugly. It was totally ugly. What an

  359. Israelite who's supposed to be God's

  360. child began to do. There's even a valley

  361. in Israel to this day that you can visit

  362. called the Valley of the Children

  363. because that's the valley where so many

  364. children were sacrificed to false gods

  365. that it became known as that place

  366. because there's so many bones and and

  367. relics of that. It's just awful. And we

  368. think, what in the world is going on?

  369. The people of God are supposed to be

  370. different. So the Lord says, I'm going

  371. to sell you into the hand of this guy

  372. named Jabin.

  373. Now, selling them into the hand, I think

  374. the Lord doing so is really important

  375. for us to notice for two reasons. First

  376. of all, God is sovereign and in control.

  377. Even when, again, as an Israelite, you

  378. might think, "Holy cow, we've we've been

  379. enslaved by the Canaanites. This is

  380. awful. And it's a a cruel 20-year

  381. enslaver enslavement.

  382. Is God even in control?" Well, yes, he

  383. is. In fact, he disciplines those he

  384. loves. And so he sovereignly allowed

  385. this to happen, enabled it to happen.

  386. But secondly, this concept of selling, I

  387. like that because what what they had

  388. done is they had begun to serve other

  389. gods. And so they became enslaved to

  390. those gods. He says, you want to act

  391. like a slave, I'll sell you like slaves

  392. is kind of what God says in his

  393. discipline. And you want to be a slave

  394. to an idol, how about I'll make you a

  395. slave to the idoltors. We'll see how

  396. that goes.

  397. And again, his discipline is always for

  398. restoration. So he's hoping at some

  399. point during this discipline process

  400. that they will cry out to him and they

  401. finally do. They finally cry out to the

  402. Lord. They repent and say, "Lord, help

  403. us because we are under such such

  404. oppression."

  405. So the tool of this of this discipline

  406. is a king named Jabin.

  407. And uh Jabin also has this uh it's in

  408. the it's in the north area by the way of

  409. those of the maps. I didn't bring the

  410. map up again, but if you remember it's

  411. kind of northern Jerusalem.

  412. And Jabin reigned in Hazor um and had

  413. this commander of his army. He was

  414. ruthless and he was good. His name is

  415. Cicora.

  416. And Cisora's advantage, what he's known

  417. for is his 900 chariots of iron, which

  418. were dominant,

  419. especially any time that the battlefield

  420. was the big plains that are just kind of

  421. north central in Israel. And we should

  422. remember that our author told us about

  423. these chariots of iron way back in

  424. chapter one.

  425. It says this, "And the Lord was with

  426. Judah." I mean, took possession of the

  427. hill country. Well, that you can't take

  428. a chariot up there. But he could not

  429. drive out the inhabitants of the plain

  430. because they had chariots of iron.

  431. So, a couple centuries earlier when

  432. Israel had been given the promised land

  433. by God, told to drive out the

  434. inhabitants, completely drive them out

  435. so that you won't be tempted to serve

  436. their god. so you won't be tempted to

  437. marry their their uh their descendants.

  438. We we don't want that. This is to be

  439. your land. They couldn't do it.

  440. Fear won out over faith because of these

  441. 900 chariots that to them that was an

  442. insurmountable obstacle. Like how do we

  443. take on chariots made of iron?

  444. Lesson for us

  445. because again this is centuries that

  446. have taken place. lesson for us. The

  447. consequences of our sin often last a

  448. long time.

  449. The consequences of my rebellion, of my

  450. failure to completely obey. Because

  451. remember, partial obedience is

  452. disobedience. Yeah.

  453. The consequences can last a long, long

  454. time. And so, I don't want to put God to

  455. the test. Do you? No. But again, finally

  456. after 20 years, the people cry out for

  457. the Lord for help. So, Israel's in the

  458. cycle, and we're going to get to the

  459. place where now the Lord delivers them.

  460. And the way he does this is by raising

  461. up a deliverer that are called the

  462. judges. So, who's going to be our

  463. deliverer? Enter a young woman or old

  464. woman, I don't really know, named

  465. Deborah. Now Deborah a prophetesses the

  466. wife of Lapedoth was judging Israel at

  467. that time. She used to sit under the

  468. palm of Deborah between Rama and Bethl

  469. in the hill country of Ephraim. And the

  470. people of Israel came up to her for

  471. judgment. She sent and summoned Barack

  472. the son of Abanoam from Cadesh Naphali

  473. and said to him, "Has not the Lord the

  474. God of Israel commanded you? Go gather

  475. your men at Mount Tabor, taking 10,000

  476. from the people of Nahali and the people

  477. of Zebulun, and I will draw out Cicora,

  478. the general of Jabin's army, to meet you

  479. by the river Kashon with his chariots

  480. and his troops, and I will give him into

  481. your hand." All right, Deborah, she's a

  482. good guy in our story. She is identified

  483. as a prophetess. Uh now most prophets in

  484. the Old Testament are men, but there are

  485. definitely some that are women. She's

  486. not just, you know, the wife of Mr.

  487. Prophet. She's actually the prophet.

  488. She's the prophetess, which means that

  489. she would get direct revelation from God

  490. and then communicate it to God's people.

  491. That's what a prophet did.

  492. Interestingly, her actions are called uh

  493. she it says that she was judging Israel

  494. at this time and that the Israel came up

  495. to her for judgment. So, it's entirely

  496. possible that Deborah was both a

  497. prophetist and a judge. Now, there's a

  498. couple different kind of judges in the

  499. Old Testament. Uh the kind that we see

  500. in the book of Judges is, as I said

  501. before, it's a deliverer type. So, it's

  502. not necessarily that they're trying to

  503. figure out um are the Canaanites and and

  504. this king and and Cicer are they are

  505. they uh guilty or innocent, but God has

  506. cast the verdict already guilty.

  507. And so, they're more like the ones that

  508. meet out the judgment. They're more like

  509. the the executioner, not the judge and

  510. the jury. So, that's that's the kind of

  511. judges we see in judges. But in the book

  512. of Exodus, we see that there was a

  513. different kind of judge as well. And

  514. they were called different things at

  515. different times. But it was a spiritual

  516. adviser that would meet people and help

  517. them settle their disputes one with

  518. another. You know, you you've got an

  519. argument over a boundary line or you've

  520. got an argument over an inheritance or

  521. whatever it is, you'd bring your case to

  522. somebody and they would kind of judge.

  523. So, it's hard to tell whether Deborah

  524. was one of those kinds of judges or not

  525. uh because she's not necessarily ever

  526. called a judge, but we know she's a

  527. prophetist and she receives this word

  528. from the Lord. And so, she says, "Hey,

  529. we need to uh we need to get Barack, the

  530. son of Abonoam."

  531. Now, one thing that should probably pop

  532. out, as I said before, prophets were

  533. typically men in the Old Testament.

  534. Both types of judges also were typically

  535. men in the Old Testament. So for the

  536. Hebrew reader, for somebody that was

  537. understanding of these these types of uh

  538. in fact in Exodus, uh the kind of judge

  539. that settled disputes, it was commanded

  540. it had to be a man. So we should kind of

  541. get a hint that something's not quite

  542. right in Israel. Um the the the men

  543. aren't leading spiritually. They don't

  544. seem to be leading uh functionally. Uh,

  545. and so God has raised up this this

  546. beautiful, wonderful woman, Deborah. And

  547. so Deborah says, "Hey, let's go get

  548. let's go get this guy, Barack, the son

  549. of Abanoam."

  550. And then um what she's to say to him is,

  551. "Has not the Lord God of Israel

  552. commanded you?" So it it sounds like

  553. it's in the form of a question, but this

  554. is actually what what one would call a

  555. prophetic formula. It's very rhetorical.

  556. she means he has he has 100% called you

  557. and it's just kind of phrased that way

  558. for uh for dramatic effect and for

  559. writing purposes and all that kind of

  560. stuff. But so she she has this big

  561. prophetic pronouncement to Barack saying

  562. go and gather and fight. All right,

  563. you're going to be the one that delivers

  564. Israel. You're gonna be the one. You're

  565. going to be the judge that takes care of

  566. this this this awful cruel general Cisra

  567. and this cruel King Jabin. You're going

  568. to be the one.

  569. And she recruits or

  570. excuse me, she tells him to recruit from

  571. two of the tribes. Um, excuse me, got

  572. something in my throat. Zebulun and

  573. Naphali. And interestingly, we're going

  574. to find out in chapter five. Chapter 5

  575. is actually a song about what happens in

  576. chapter 4. Uh so we're not going to

  577. preach verse by verse through chapter 5.

  578. I know I usually do that, but we're

  579. going to we're going to let you do that

  580. on your own. Give you some homework this

  581. week. But we find out this detail that

  582. um actually all of the tribes are

  583. invited to go do the fighting. It's just

  584. that the dominates were from those two

  585. tribes. And so uh we'll find that out a

  586. little bit later and I'll I'll talk

  587. about that. Um, but in verse 7, I want

  588. you to notice the change of subject as

  589. we start in verse six of the things that

  590. Barack is to do. Go and gather and you

  591. guys are going to fight. But guess what?

  592. What who who's talking here? And it

  593. says, "And I will draw out Cicora."

  594. God, it's God through Deborah, right? So

  595. he's promising, "I will draw out Cisra."

  596. And what else will God do? God will give

  597. them into your hand. So, the subject

  598. changes from what Barack is going to do

  599. to what God is going to do.

  600. And I was thinking about this this week.

  601. I'm a little tempted to be jealous of

  602. Barack because God gives him this clear

  603. and easy instruction. Okay, here's

  604. here's the things you're going to do.

  605. And and then he gives him a guarantee, a

  606. victory

  607. of even drawing them out towards the

  608. river Keshan. God's going to do this

  609. stuff. So I a simple instruction and a

  610. guaranteed victory. Man, I was I mean I

  611. was talking to a friend just this week.

  612. There's so many things in my life that

  613. I'm like I want to know what God's will

  614. is in this regard or in this regard. I

  615. don't know what God wants me to do. I

  616. want to know God's will. And I would

  617. just love it if you just in a really

  618. nice clear voice say, Kevin, what I'd

  619. like you to do is gather your

  620. belongings, get in your truck, and go to

  621. this place and do this thing. And guess

  622. what? I'm going to show up and do the

  623. things that I do. and it's going to be a

  624. great result. And I'd be like, "Oh,

  625. thank you, Lord. What? That would be so

  626. nice."

  627. But then God reminded me

  628. that I've got a whole book full of

  629. things that I know the Lord has

  630. commanded me to do and a whole book full

  631. of guarantees he makes to me in the

  632. process.

  633. And yet I still fail to do some of those

  634. things. And I still lack the faith to

  635. walk in those things. And when I wuss

  636. out, I miss out.

  637. But even with Barack, he's he's a lot

  638. like me and you. He's human. We're going

  639. to find out. Even though he's got these

  640. clear instructions and this guarantee,

  641. he's going to struggle to faithfully

  642. obey. Barack said to her, "I if if you

  643. will go with me, I will go. But if you

  644. will not go with me, I will not go." And

  645. she said, "I will surely go with you.

  646. Nevertheless, the road on which you are

  647. going will not lead to your glory, for

  648. the Lord will sell Cicora into the hand

  649. of a woman." Then Deborah arose and went

  650. with Barack to Cadesh. And Barack called

  651. out Zebulun and Naphali to Cadesh. And

  652. 10,000 men went up at his heels. And

  653. Deborah went up with him.

  654. Now this should hurt every man in the

  655. room.

  656. What's he doing?

  657. He's got clear instructions.

  658. He's got a guarantee.

  659. And he says, "Um,

  660. I don't want to go alone. Will you go

  661. with me?

  662. What What is he afraid of? Well, there's

  663. there's plenty of things, I'm sure, to

  664. be afraid of. We all have plenty of

  665. things to be afraid of in this world.

  666. He's he he could be fearful. Well,

  667. people won't follow me. They know you.

  668. You're the prophetist. They won't follow

  669. me. I need the weight of of your your

  670. words so that they'll come and and I can

  671. recruit them. Well, maybe he's afraid of

  672. the recruiting. Maybe he's afraid of the

  673. fighting like well will God really get

  674. scissor out to fight us and then give us

  675. the will he really or maybe if I have a

  676. little trinket the prophetus with me

  677. like the Israelites who brought the ark

  678. of the covenant with them to battle at

  679. one point that was not what they were

  680. supposed to do maybe if if I got my

  681. little rabbit's foot with me prophet

  682. estra maybe then I can win

  683. I'm sure he had in inadequacies these

  684. he and he sees the obstacles. He sees

  685. again this modern warfare stuff that

  686. they don't have.

  687. There's plenty of reasons. But I tell

  688. you, a believer when God is given a

  689. clear command,

  690. there should never be any ifs. And there

  691. should also never definitely ever be I

  692. will not if not. That should not be in

  693. Brock's vocabulary. That should not be

  694. in my vocabulary. Again,

  695. could we throw the first stone though?

  696. Think through your life. Allow Holy

  697. Spirit to search your heart. What

  698. commands has God given me that I'm

  699. unwilling to complete?

  700. And what promises has God guaranteed me

  701. and yet I faithfully fail to participate

  702. in his kingdom work?

  703. What inadequacies do I focus on

  704. that stop me from serving in my local

  705. church,

  706. being involved in ministry, and serving

  707. my neighbor? It's all these things I'm

  708. called to do. What What obstacles do I

  709. face

  710. that stop me from sharing Christ with my

  711. neighbor?

  712. Deborah does agree to go with him, which

  713. is interesting. I think it's the grace

  714. of God.

  715. Despite his rebellious attitude, God

  716. still is going to graciously use Barack.

  717. However, there's going to be this

  718. consequence. He's not going to get the

  719. military glory that normally as the

  720. commander of this large force and uh you

  721. know being oppressed for all those

  722. years, the the victory and the and the

  723. cries and the shouts and all that, it's

  724. not going to go to him, but it's going

  725. to go to a woman, which at this point in

  726. the story, if you're like me, I'm

  727. assuming that's Deborah, but we'll see

  728. if that's true or not.

  729. So perhaps by way of application, you

  730. can relate to uh Barack's story and but

  731. perhaps you relate a little bit to

  732. Deborah's story.

  733. Um

  734. maybe you're married to a spiritually

  735. passive man.

  736. You know, you've given your husband

  737. books on how to be a godly man. You've

  738. tried to drag him to church with you.

  739. you've you sent him sermon clips.

  740. I just want to caution you, be careful

  741. that you don't drive him farther from

  742. God because I I was thinking about it

  743. like a drug addict this week. I was

  744. talking about a friend who just refuses

  745. to want any help with his drug

  746. addiction. He just doesn't want it. And

  747. you can never force an addict to get

  748. help. They have to want the help.

  749. And you can't for force a passive man to

  750. lead because you'll just emasculate him

  751. further.

  752. So I I think we need to be like Deborah

  753. in this way. She doesn't berate him. She

  754. doesn't unnecessarily embarrass him even

  755. though there are going to be

  756. consequences and she's a prophetist. She

  757. has to tell him the pro the consequences

  758. that God has told her.

  759. But scripture talks about that uh that

  760. wives can even win an unbelieving spouse

  761. to the Lord. Wives can do that by having

  762. a gentle and respectful tone and

  763. attitude and activity and that someone

  764. can be one over to Christ with that kind

  765. of a godly life. So just be cautious

  766. that you leave some room for your

  767. husband to come along.

  768. And this this story, I do think, is

  769. highlighting on purpose that there's a

  770. contrast between men who who decline to

  771. lead and women who God then uses to lead

  772. faithfully.

  773. Both on a spiritual level and on a

  774. military level, God will raise up women

  775. to lead when the Israelite men are

  776. cowards and when they decline

  777. leadership. And it still happens today.

  778. So, first of all, men start leading.

  779. Pick up the mantle of leadership. Bring

  780. your family through the scriptures. Pray

  781. with them. You be the one to say, "No,

  782. we're going to church in the morning."

  783. So, be up. This is an optional thing. We

  784. do this. This is what we do. We gather

  785. together with God's people and we

  786. worship the Lord. We learn about him.

  787. We're going to go to service Sunday.

  788. Yeah, there's an obstacle. We've got a

  789. little tiny baby. Hey, strap it on.

  790. Let's go work. Will we get as much work

  791. done as everybody else? Maybe not. But

  792. we'll be there and we'll testify to the

  793. good God that we serve. Men, men lead in

  794. all of these ways. And women, of course,

  795. allow room for your formerly passive man

  796. to step into his God-given role of

  797. leadership.

  798. So Deborah accompanies Barack. He calls

  799. out the uh the tribes, assembles the

  800. 10,000 men. We're going out to fight.

  801. But who will the woman be that gets the

  802. glory for slaying Cicora?

  803. Now Heber the Kenite had separated from

  804. the Kenites, the descendants of Hobab,

  805. the father-in-law of Moses, and had

  806. pitched his tent as far away as the oak

  807. in Zah Ananim, which is near Kadesh.

  808. Now, this is odd. Um, what does this

  809. have to do with the price of rice in

  810. China?

  811. I mean, we all have that family member,

  812. don't we? You're talk and you sit there

  813. talking about the nice dinner and and

  814. you know you subject comes up and maybe

  815. we're talking about sports or board

  816. games and they're like I like corn.

  817. What? What do you say, Grandma? I like

  818. corn.

  819. We were talking what? Somehow it makes

  820. total sense to them. They had this

  821. stream of consciousness thing that got

  822. them to where they like corn or whatever

  823. it is. We all have that family member.

  824. If you don't, it's you. Um,

  825. but here's what apparently we're

  826. supposed to learn. There's a guy named

  827. Heber who had separated from the

  828. Kenites. Now, the Kenites are uh long

  829. descendants of uh Moses family. So, his

  830. his father-in-law's family and they had

  831. they had converted to the God of Israel

  832. and lived among the Israelites for many

  833. many years. Faithful, good clan.

  834. We learn a little bit about them in

  835. chapters 1 and two as far as you know

  836. where they settled and all that kind of

  837. stuff. But Heber seems gone over to the

  838. dark side. There's a couple things that

  839. we know about the Kenites. One is that

  840. they were nomadic and we kind of get a

  841. hint of that as far as he had pitched

  842. his tent uh over by the oak of Anam

  843. which is near Cadesh. Remember Kadesh is

  844. where they're headed for the battle. Um,

  845. so he the the second thing that we know

  846. about the Kenites is that they were

  847. smiths. So they were metal workers. The

  848. the metallurgy. Uh, I'm a bit of a metal

  849. worker myself, so I get it. The hint

  850. though I think that we might get is

  851. we've got all these chariots of

  852. iron.

  853. And uh, as a smith, you could probably

  854. get a good amount of work there. I think

  855. maybe the subtle clue reading between

  856. the lines is that there may be some sort

  857. of financial gain to switching sides to

  858. those that were oppressing and maybe you

  859. get a little less depressed too. So

  860. Heber the Kenite totally wusses out

  861. instead of serving God, instead of doing

  862. the time, whatever it is, he totally

  863. wusses out of his responsibilities and

  864. defects.

  865. Jesus himself talks about how uh how

  866. difficult it is for a rich person to

  867. enter the kingdom of heaven. And we're

  868. warned throughout scripture uh against

  869. the love of money because the love of

  870. money is the root of all kinds of evil.

  871. So you got to be careful when it comes

  872. to money. And that's kind of where we

  873. are with this little interruption. So

  874. let's let's get back to the story. Okay.

  875. I want to know how this battle goes.

  876. When Cicero was told that Barack the son

  877. of Abodome had gone up to Mount Tabor,

  878. Cicora called out all his chariots, 900

  879. chariots of iron, and all the men who

  880. were with him from Herish Hagim to the

  881. river Keson. And Deborah said to

  882. Bareric, "Up, for this is the day in

  883. which the Lord has given Cicora into

  884. your hand. Does not the Lord go out

  885. before you?" Another prophetic

  886. rhetorical question. And of course he

  887. does. So Barack went down from Mount

  888. Tabor with 10,000 men following him. And

  889. the Lord routed Cisora and all his

  890. chariots and all his army before Barack

  891. by the edge of the sword. And Cicora got

  892. down from his chariot and fled away on

  893. foot. And Barack pursued the chariots

  894. and the army to Heresth Hagim. And all

  895. the army of Cicora fell fell by the edge

  896. of the sword. Not a man was left.

  897. Yeah, baby. This This is a part There's

  898. a lot of uh biblical accounts,

  899. historical accounts that get made into

  900. movies. This would be the big battle

  901. scene, and I'm telling you, this would

  902. have been epic. That 10,000 and and the

  903. chariots and the horses and the the foot

  904. soldiers from the other side, and they

  905. come to battle.

  906. But what what we would see behind the

  907. scenes is that Cisora, this this cruel,

  908. mighty uh warlord guy, he's bloodthirsty

  909. and he's greedy for battle.

  910. He's a little overconfident. In fact, he

  911. sends all the chariots and all the foot

  912. soldiers because he's like, "This is a

  913. guaranteed victory." And you know,

  914. there'd be that one color guy that's,

  915. you know, a lieutenant or something

  916. that's like, "But Cisora, we don't need

  917. all of them do. we shouldn't we wait and

  918. have a second wave? And he'd be like,

  919. "No way. I'm squashing these Israelites

  920. like ants." You know, bam. And they go

  921. in there. Notice uh you may have noticed

  922. already, but the river Kishon is

  923. mentioned quite a bit in this story. And

  924. again, we have it in here at the end of

  925. verse uh 13 there.

  926. Why is that mentioned? Well, again, uh,

  927. chapter five, in the song of this

  928. account, uh, there's a couple blanks

  929. that get filled in telling us that God

  930. caused the river Kishon to flood over

  931. its banks.

  932. And so, this created this muddy mess

  933. that slowed and stopped these chariots,

  934. completely eliminating their advantage

  935. and allowing Barack and his army to take

  936. out how many? All of the chariots. Yeah.

  937. 900. And how many of the foot soldiers?

  938. All of the foot soldiers. All of them.

  939. Not a man was left.

  940. Now, there's some things that we can uh

  941. enjoy about the author's writing.

  942. Um

  943. Barack or Cisora. First of all, this is

  944. just kind of a picture. This isn't even

  945. about the writing. This is about what

  946. happened. Cisora, this mighty man

  947. entered a battle with his armor, you

  948. know, and chest out, riding this

  949. magnificent chariot, going in ready for

  950. the victory. He's forced to get down.

  951. Can I get down, mommy? I'm done with my

  952. dinner. Total wuss move here and flee on

  953. foot. He just runs like a coward.

  954. No, no, there's there's no bravery. Oh,

  955. I go down with my soldiers. I go down

  956. with a ship. There's nothing like that.

  957. He runs away. And it says at the end,

  958. not a man was left.

  959. Do you get the subtle dig?

  960. Yeah, Cicero wasn't a man at all. He was

  961. left. Everybody else is dead. There was

  962. a man left, but there wasn't a man left.

  963. So, the author gets his dig in.

  964. Again though, the prophetus Deborah has

  965. predicted that Cicora wasn't going to

  966. fall by Barack's hand. So even this is

  967. providential uh by God. But Cicora fled

  968. away on foot to the tent of Jel, the

  969. wife of Heber the Kenite.

  970. For there was peace between Jabin, the

  971. king of Hazor, and the house of Heber

  972. the Kenite. And JL came out to meet

  973. Cisora and said to him, "Turn aside, my

  974. lord. Turn aside to me. Don't be

  975. afraid." So he turned aside to her into

  976. the tent and she covered him with a rug.

  977. And he said to her, "Please give me a

  978. give me a little water to drink for I'm

  979. thirsty." She opened a skin of milk and

  980. gave him a drink and covered him. And he

  981. said to her, "Stand at the opening of

  982. the tent. And if any man comes and asks

  983. you, is anyone here?" Say no. So again,

  984. finally we figure out why the author

  985. told us about Hebrew the Kenite. He is a

  986. part of the story. or maybe more

  987. accurately, his wife is part of the

  988. story. Because as Cicero is running away

  989. on foot, looking behind him, hoping he

  990. can save his hide, he comes to her tent

  991. and she invites him in to hide from the

  992. pursuing army. And exhausted and

  993. defeated, he's so thirsty, asks for some

  994. water. She gives him a little bit of

  995. milk. Uh the name JL means goat, so it

  996. could be goat's milk. She could have had

  997. a thing for goats. We don't know. But

  998. she gives him some milk. Isn't that

  999. sweet? Well, little baby sister the

1000. coward, the little boy got down from his

1001. dinner, but he just wants a little milk.

  1002. I love this.

1003. And his words too, they also drip with

1004. uh with with ironic comedy here because

1005. this translated is anyone here in the

1006. Hebrew translated directly is is any man

1007. here? Is any man here? Nope. No man

1008. here. just this chump, this was.

1009. But JL, the wife of Heber, took a tent

1010. peg and took a hammer in her hand. Then

1011. she went softly to him and drove the peg

1012. into his temple until it went down into

1013. the ground while he was lying fast

1014. asleep from weariness. So he died.

1015. And behold, as Barack was pursuing

1016. Cisora, JL went out to meet him and said

1017. to him, "Come, and I will show you the

1018. man whom you are seeking." So when he

1019. went into her tent, and there lay Cicora

1020. dead with the tent peg in his temple.

  1021. Okay.

  1022. He

1023. may have been comfortable betraying God

1024. and Israel with the Canaanites, but not

  1025. his wife.

1026. Again, we have an example of a man who's

  1027. a coward and who's a traitor and a woman

1028. who is faithful and she knows what

  1029. they're supposed to do. She's the

1030. heroine of our story today. She takes

1031. action to redeem the Israelites from the

1032. cruel oppression of the Canaanites.

1033. We might think this is so crazy though.

1034. This is so brutal. It's there's trickery

  1035. involved. She's she's deceiving him. Is

1036. this okay? Yes. All is fair in love and

1037. war. When you're at wartime, this is

1038. this you people need to die. And I'm

1039. telling you again, this is an

  1040. oppressive, cruel, ungodly, sinful

1041. people group. You know, we read about uh

1042. the the the Muslim faith and how in the

1043. Quran it says that if you uh if you

1044. capture another people, you can take as

1045. many of those women as you want as as

1046. wives. And and it's not it's compulsory.

1047. In fact, you can rape as many as you

1048. want as well because they're less than

1049. people if they're not you. This is like

1050. given as permission. It's guess who are

1051. the descendants that that start Islam?

1052. They get it from these people groups. So

1053. these these people likely had molested

  1054. and hurt

1055. countless Israelite women, possibly JL

1056. herself, possibly her daughters. We

1057. don't know. But we know again this is a

1058. wicked man that gets what he deserves.

1059. So, don't feel too sorry for for tent

  1060. peg boy here. Okay.

1061. And you kind of wonder about the tent

1062. peg. I know I did. Well, I read this

1063. week that as a nomadic people in the

1064. nomadic tribe, it was typically the

1065. wife's job to put the tent up, including

  1066. the tent pegs.

1067. She knows how to do this. You know, some

  1068. of you are like, "I couldn't swing a

1069. hammer that accurately." You're like,

1070. "No, she could." So, she took what she

1071. had. She took what she knew and she

1072. offered it up to God in an act of

1073. obedience. She knew what God's will was

1074. and she took care of business with what

1075. she had. And again, I think this is a

1076. reminder like we like we learned last

1077. week that my responsibility is to

  1078. respond to God's ability. I'm not

1079. counting on myself. I'm not counting on

1080. my knowledge, my experience, my prowess,

  1081. my vigor.

1082. I'm counting on God's ability to get

1083. things done. And when we act in faith

1084. upon what God's called to do, he can

1085. take what little we have and he can

1086. multiply it according to his ability.

1087. One of the themes in our community group

1088. this week, we were talking about what,

1089. you know, what are the obstacles to

1090. sharing our faith with others? Major

  1091. theme was I don't feel like I know

  1092. enough. I don't feel like I know enough.

1093. I I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to

1094. answer the questions and the disputes

1095. and the the frustrations that people

1096. have. We have to remind ourselves it's

1097. not about what you know. God can take

1098. what little you know and he can save a

1099. soul. Because what we're doing when we

1100. begin to talk to somebody about the

1101. gospel of Jesus Christ, when we when we

1102. tell them about how he's impacted our

1103. life, no matter how little we know,

  1104. we're entering a conversation that Holy

1105. Spirit started quite a while ago and

1106. that Holy Spirit has been having with

1107. this person. Holy Spirit is already

1108. calling and compelling and we're just

1109. entering the conversation. And so what

1110. little we know is what God asks us to

1111. bring. And we have to remind ourselves

1112. it's okay if somebody has an objection

1113. to Christianity or really hard question

  1114. to go, "Man, that's a good question. I

  1115. don't know.

  1116. I don't know." But I bet you I can find

1117. out and we can continue this

1118. conversation later. That is totally

1119. okay. You're not expected to be the

1120. Bible answer man or be the Bible answer

1121. woman. You don't have to know all the

1122. trivia and all the names and all the

1123. references, but you know what God has

1124. done for you. Take what little you have

1125. and offer it up to God and see that he

  1126. doesn't multiply it.

1127. Interestingly, uh the verb for drove the

1128. tent peg into his temple is the same as

1129. last week when Ehood drove his sword

1130. into the fat belly of Eglon. So this

1131. woman is a war hero just like Ehood was.

1132. It's epic. So on that day, God subdued

1133. Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the

1134. people of Israel. And the hand of the

1135. people of Israel pressed harder and

1136. harder against Jabin, the king of

1137. Canaan, until they destroyed Jabin, the

  1138. king of of Canaan.

1139. So verse 23 really as it sums up the

1140. story is highlighting the true hero, the

1141. true hero. So on that day, God subdued.

1142. God conquered. God destroyed the king of

  1143. Canaan.

1144. Let's not forget again, this is hundreds

1145. of years after the Israelites were

1146. called to destroy these chariots. But

  1147. it's done

1148. and it's done by God.

1149. When he says something needs to be done,

1150. he's going to get it done. If I say no,

1151. he's going to use somebody else.

1152. If you say no, he's going to use

1153. somebody else. And all of a sudden,

1154. because I worked out, now I miss out.

1155. And and and two faithful women go down

1156. in history as helping to deliver and

1157. save Israel. And the slightly less

1158. faithful Bareric Barack is kind of a

  1159. laughingtock.

  1160. Chapter 5, like I said, is a song. We're

1161. not going to read it all today, but I

1162. want to read the first uh two verses and

1163. the last verse. Then saying Deborah and

1164. Barack the son of Abenome on that day

1165. that the leaders that the leaders took

1166. the lead in Israel that the people

1167. offered themselves willingly bless the

1168. Lord. So bless the Lord will be said

1169. three times in the song and as you guys

1170. read it on your own highlight those

1171. bless the Lords because that's a major

1172. theme. But look what happens. He says

1173. man we're praising God because the

1174. leaders took the lead. those who were

1175. called to said yes and that the people

1176. offered themselves fully and willingly

1177. to the to the work of the Lord and they

  1178. praised God for that.

1179. There's only a couple new pieces of

1180. information in chapter 5, a couple of

1181. which I've already told you, but another

1182. is that even though all the tribes were

1183. invited, there was, I think, four tribes

  1184. that declined to participate.

1185. and the the the the big things the

1186. obstacles they let get in their way was

1187. apathy, uh passivity, busyiness, and the

  1188. love of money.

1189. So, we all must make a choice whether

1190. we're going to serve the Lord or not.

  1191. And the final verse,

1192. so may all your enemies perish, oh Lord,

1193. but your friends be like the sun as he

1194. rises in his might. And the land had

1195. rest for 40 years. I love that concept.

1196. I'm like, Lord, may I be like the sun as

1197. he rises in his mind. May I be as

1198. reliable as the sun rising every day.

1199. We don't have to wonder if it's going to

1200. rise tomorrow. It will. And it has our

1201. whole life. May I be that kind of man.

1202. May I be that kind of woman that says

1203. yes regularly to God. And there's no

1204. question of whether I'm going to respond

  1205. or not.

1206. Father, thank you so very much for this

  1207. convicting passage.

1208. I confess so many ways that I'm passive

  1209. and apathetic.

1210. I confess so many ways that I look at my

1211. obstacles or my my inadequacies and I

1212. let them become bigger than uh my faith.

1213. I repent of those things, Lord.

  1214. we all do together.

1215. May we be a church that obeys you with

1216. with almost a reckless faith because we

1217. count so much on your promises that you

1218. will always be with us, that you will

1219. win in the end, and that we'll have an

1220. eternity to spend with you. Thank you

1221. for the gift of the cross, which we

1222. celebrate this week. Thank you that you

1223. rose again on the third day. We love you

1224. with all of our hearts. We pray these

1225. things in the powerful and beautiful and

1226. precious name of Jesus. Amen.

1227. We're going to do a few more worship

1228. songs during this time. Feel free to

1229. make your way around to the back and

1230. sides for communion. Uh we observe a

1231. open communion here. You don't have to

1232. be a member. Um so feel free to uh to

  1233. make your way around.

1234. Worthy of every song we could ever sing.

1235. Worthy of all the praise we could ever

  1236. bring.

1237. Worthy of every breath we could ever

1238. brea. We live for you.

1239. >> Jesus, the name above every other name.

1240. >> Jesus, the only one who could ever say,

1241. >> worthy of every breath we could ever

1242. brea. We live for you.

1243. For we live for you,

  1244. >> holy,

1245. there is no one like you. There is none

1246. beside you. Open up my eyes and wonder.

1247. Show me who you are and fill me with

1248. your heart and lead me in your love to

  1249. those all around me.

1250. Worthy of every song we could ever sing.

1251. >> Worthy of all the praise we could ever

  1252. bring.

1253. >> Worthy of every breath we could ever

1254. brea. We live for you.

1255. Jesus the name above every other name.

1256. >> Jesus the only one who could ever say

1257. >> worthy of every breath we could ever

1258. breathe. We live for you.

1259. Oh, we live in you

  1260. >> and holy.

1261. There is no one like you. There is none

1262. beside you. Open up my eyes in wonder

1263. and show me who you are and fill me with

1264. your heart and lead me in your love to

  1265. those around me. Holy,

1266. there is no one like you. There is none

1267. beside you. Open up my eyes in wonder

1268. and show me who you are and fill me with

1269. your heart and lead me in your love to

  1270. those around me.

1271. and I will build my life

1272. upon your love. It is a foundation.

1273. And I will put my trust in you alone.

1274. And I will not be shenen.

  1275. And I will build a life

1276. upon your love. It is perfect

  1277. foundation.

1278. I will put my trust in you, Lord, Lord,

1279. and I will not be shame.

1280. And I will build my life upon your love.

  1281. It is a

  1282. foundation

1283. and I will put my trust in you alone

1284. and I will not be shen

  1285. holy.

1286. There is no one like you. There is none

1287. beside you. Open up my eyes in wonder

1288. and show me who you are and fill me with

1289. your heart and lead me in your love to

  1290. those around me. Holy.

1291. There is no one like you. There is none

1292. beside you. Open up my eyes in wonder

1293. and show me who you are and fill me with

1294. your heart and lead me in your love to

  1295. those around me.

1332. working. Even when I don't feel it,

1333. you're working. You never stop. You

1334. never stop working. You never stop. You

1335. never stop working. Even when I don't

1336. see it, you're working. Even when I

1337. don't feel it, you're working. You never

1338. stop. You never stop working. You never

1339. stop. You never stop working. Even when

  1340. I don't see it, you're working. Even

1342. You never stop. You never stop working.

  1343. Even when I don't see it, you're

  1347. never stop working.

1348. You're miracle worker, promise keeper,

1349. light in the darkness. My God, that is

1359. keeper, light in the darkness. My God,

1360. that is who you are.

1361. You are way maker, miracle worker,

1362. promise keeper, light in the darkness.

1363. My God, that is who you are.

1364. We're gonna do one more song. You know

1365. the drill. Ushers are going to come

1366. forward to collect any offering that you

1367. have to give. If you don't call this

1368. place your home, please just let it go.

1369. We'd love to get to know you a little

1370. better. Hang out, get to know some

1371. people, shake some hands, laugh a

1372. little. Okay, here we go.

1373. I was lost at the fall running away when

  1374. I hear you call.

  1375. Father, you were your

1376. I had no righteousness of my own. I had

1377. no right to draw near your throne.

1378. Father, you love me still.

1379. And in love before you laid the world's

  1380. foundation,

1381. you predestined to adopt me as your own.

1382. You have raised me up so high above my

  1383. station.

1384. I'm a child of God by grace and grace

  1385. alone.

1386. You left your home to seek out the lost.

1387. You knew the great terrible cause.

1388. Jesus, your face was sad.

1389. I work my fingers down to the bone and

1390. nothing I did could ever atone.

1391. Jesus, you paid my de.

1392. And by your blood, I have redemption and

  1393. salvation.

1394. Lord, you died that I might reap what

  1395. you have sown.

1396. And you rose that I might be a new

  1397. creation.

1398. I am born again by grace and grace

  1399. alone.

1400. I was in darkness all of my life. I

1401. never knew the day from the night. The

1402. spirit you made me see.

1403. I swore I knew the way on my own. A head

1404. full of rocks, a heart made of stone.

1405. Spirit, you moved in me.

1406. As your touch was sleeping spirit was

  1407. awaken

1408. on my dark and my light Christ has shown

1409. into a kingom that cannot be shaken.

1410. Heaven cited by grace and praise the

  1411. Lord.

1412. So I stand in faith by grace and grace

  1413. alone.

1414. I will run the race by grace and grace

  1415. alone.

1416. I will slay my sin by grace and grace

  1417. alone.

1418. I will reach the end by grace and grace

  1419. alone.

  1420. >> Amen. Have a great week.

  1421. Oh,

  1422. heat, heat. Heat.

  1423. Heat.
