  180. >> Jesus, while we wait for you this

  181. morning and think about you and worship

  182. you, thank you so much for the day that

  183. you brought us here. We look forward in

  184. anticipation to the day you return. God,

  185. until then, please help us make this us

  186. as close to heaven as we can as we

  187. possibly can. Help us to soften our

  188. hearts towards you and towards each

  189. other and towards this world. In your

  190. name, amen. Good morning. You can have a

  191. seat. My name is Lorraine Xstein. Happy

  192. to welcome you to church this morning in

  193. the first day of summer.

  194. Right.

  195. Excited to have this weather until

  196. October. It can start raining in

  197. October. It's fine with me.

  198. It's a great morning to be here. I hope

  199. you are warmly welcomed. Got a cup of

  200. coffee and a snack. We only have three

  201. announcements this morning, but I wanted

  202. to tell you first that church center is

  203. available for you to look at all the

  204. things coming up because we are the

  205. beginning the season of summer and the

  206. season of outreach. There are a lot of

  207. opportunities ahead. And uh do I hold

  208. this back further? Uh there's a lot of

  209. opportunities ahead to serve and we're

  210. just looking forward to serving

  211. together, being in community together.

  212. So the first thing we're going to talk

  213. about is people who are out running

  214. right now. Actually, we do have a group

  215. running uh marathon and half marathons

  216. this morning. So if you will pray for

  217. them, very excited to um join in them.

  218. And on May 16th, you can come here at 8

  219. o'clock in the morning. 8 o'lock and run

  220. a 6K. You can walk it, you can cycle it,

  221. you can bring your dogs, whatever you

  222. want to do. Join us out in the parking

  223. lot. The uh path will be clearly marked

  224. and we are raising money for clean

  225. water. If you want to know more

  226. information about this or register, you

  227. can get on

  228. >> church center. There you go. There you

  229. go. May 16th. Okay. The next thing we're

  230. going to talk about is the Lacy Spring

  231. Fund Fair. How many of you have helped

  232. in the booth at the fund fair?

  233. >> Okay. Okay, I want you keep your hands

  234. up. Keep your hands up. Okay, all of you

  235. all get to tell everyone else how fun

  236. this is. So, everybody that's been

  237. there, this is a hoot. We get a lot of

  238. people coming to church from the spring

  239. fun fair. So, what this is about is we

  240. set up a big huge booth on Friday night

  241. and we man that booth most of the day

  242. Saturday and most of the day Sunday. So,

  243. we're going to need some special

  244. volunteers that want to skip church on

  245. Sunday and go stand in the sunshine and

  246. help out at the fun fair. This is the

  247. 15th is the day that we are setting up

  248. and then the fun fair runs the 16th and

  249. the 17th. We hand out water and smiles

  250. and Tootsie Pops and invite to church

  251. cards. We have some brand new ones we're

  252. getting printed right now. So, please

  253. join us. It is a hoot. You can see

  254. Pastor Kevin in his element at this

  255. event if you don't think you're seeing

  256. him in his element every Sunday. And

  257. then the last thing we're going to talk

  258. about is what is next Sunday?

  259. >> Mama's Day. Y'all got one. You have one.

  260. You might not know her. She might be

  261. gone, but there's a lot of moms around

  262. here that we are going to s still

  263. celebrate on Sunday morning. So, there

  264. is a photo booth. It's going to be down

  265. the kids wing hallway. And it's free.

  266. Take your picture. You don't have to be

  267. a mom to get your picture taken. Grab

  268. some friends. Go do group group photo

  269. shoots. And uh I think Susan's manning

  270. the camera that day. So she is a mom. So

  271. make sure you say happy Mother's Day to

  272. her. Okay, that's it for me. What do you

  273. need to do? Look at Church Center.

  274. There's so much more to sign up for on

  275. Church Center. It's a great couple of

  276. three or four months. Okay, kids first

  277. through 5th, line up over there

  278. underneath that exit sign. If you have a

  279. small one, we'd ask you to take them

  280. back to the kids wing, drop them off. We

  281. will not start the sermon till you get

  282. back.

  283. Hey, hey, hey.

  284. Heat. Heat. Heat.

  285. Heat.

  286. Morning

  287. friends.

  288. I missed you guys.

  289. I did. I know you were in great capable

  290. hands. The wonderful preaching of our

  291. executive pastor Brian Bri the last two

  292. weeks. But Amy and I got to get away. We

  293. had a splendid time. It was a wonderful,

  294. wonderful, refreshing time. A a good

  295. friend of ours has a little house up in

  296. down in South Lake Tahoe. And Amy said,

  297. "I want to drive. It's less than 12

  298. hours." I said, "Okay." So, I tell you,

  299. we just had a great time getting to

  300. know, well, getting to know each other.

  301. It's 27 years now. uh g talking about

  302. everything and everything and anything

  303. in life and you know our parents and our

  304. kids and us and just it was a really

  305. great time on the road. Um I did realize

  306. something about myself though is that

  307. I'm a bit of a prideful man when it

  308. comes to driving. I I I want the badge

  309. of honor of saying I drove all 12 hours

  310. both ways. I' I'm sorry but I feel like

  311. I'm a decent driver. I think I have

  312. skills. Been doing it a long time. Uh,

  313. only one accident my whole life. Haven't

  314. had a ticket in a couple decades. I'm

  315. like, I think I'm pretty good at this.

  316. And I want Amy to be able to relax and

  317. be my little passenger princess over

  318. there. She can choose some music. She

  319. can do all that. And she's so sweet. My

  320. wife is so sweet. Do you need me to

  321. drive about seven billion times because

  322. she because she loves me. And I'm like,

  323. "No, no, I'm good. I'm good. I'm good."

  324. So, I did it. I did both directions all

  325. the way. I had the best co-pilot in the

  326. world. And that's how what made it

  327. possible. But I realized, yeah, this is

  328. a badge of honor for me. Hopefully, it's

  329. not a bad pride thing. I was thinking

  330. about driving and my my wonderful

  331. co-pilot and I remembered a a bumper

  332. sticker that became really famous when I

  333. was young. I think it was famous in the

  334. late 70s, uh, when I was born in the

  335. mid70s. And then I saw it a lot when I

  336. was a kid in the 80s and it said, "God

  337. is my co-pilot." Anyone remember seeing

  338. a bumper sticker like that? a few of us

  339. old people. Okay. I found out it

  340. actually didn't start as bumper sticker

  341. theology as I like to call it. But uh it

  342. started there was a pilot in World War

  343. II that wrote his memoirs. And it was

  344. all about how in every mission God was

  345. present. And he was, you know, he just

  346. knew that God was present. That's how he

  347. wrote his memoirs. He titled this book

  348. that I think was published in the late

  349. 40s, God is my co-pilot.

  350. It it had nothing to do with the fact

  351. that um that that's bad theology. It was

  352. about the fact that God was with him all

  353. the way. Yes, he was in control of this

  354. plane at the controls, but really God

  355. was the one in control. But this bumper

  356. sticker theology that came out of it

  357. began to be criticized in the mid 80s

  358. when I was going to church because uh

  359. people would retort, wait a second, if

  360. if God is your co-pilot, you need to

  361. switch seats because that I mean it

  362. really is a bad idea to say, "Yeah, I'm

  363. just driving. I'm I'm in control of my

  364. life and God's my co-pilot." No. That's

  365. not biblical Christianity at all, is it?

  366. No, it's not. You know, when we come to

  367. know Jesus Christ and we trust in him

  368. for the forgiveness of our sins and and

  369. we put our faith in his work on that

  370. cross, he becomes our savior. And he

  371. loves being our savior. And we love

  372. having him as a savior. But the rest of

  373. your life as a Christian is learning

  374. more about him, learning more about who

  375. you are in him, learning more about his

  376. beautiful word. And most of all,

  377. learning to give him lordship in your

  378. life. That he's not just our savior, but

  379. we make him more and more each day as he

  380. reveals his wishes, as he reveals who he

  381. is, we say, you know what? You're the

  382. Lord. You're the master. You're the

  383. driver. And wherever you want to take

  384. me, I'm ready to go. In our study in the

  385. book of Judges, we're going to get to a

  386. judge that uh honestly does some really

  387. awful stuff.

  388. Um he's he's a mixed bag like any of our

  389. judges. There's some good things. He'll

  390. call upon the name of the Lord. Um he'll

  391. profess him in some ways. He seems to

  392. have an understanding, a very basic

  393. understanding of who God is. But because

  394. he hasn't made God his Lord, fully

  395. submitted himself to him, he also makes

  396. some really foolish decisions with

  397. disastrous consequences. And as we look

  398. at the consequences of conformity.

  399. That's our our judges overarching theme.

  400. We're going to see today in this passage

  401. that the cure for conformity is

  402. lordship.

  403. The cure for conformity is lordship. So

  404. turn your Bibles to Judges chapter 10.

    Judges 10 chapter mention

  405. We're going to cover a couple chapters

  406. today, but they go pretty quickly. So

  407. don't be too stressed out about that.

  408. Let's read God's word. Let's ask him to

  409. impact our hearts. Amen. Amen. Chapter

  410. 10 verse one. After aim there arose to

  411. save Israel Tollah the son of Pua son of

  412. Dodo a man of Issachar and he lived at

  413. Shamir in the hill country hill country

  414. of Ephraim. And he judged Israel 23

  415. years. Then he died and was buried at

  416. Shmeir.

  417. After him arose Jaair the Gileadite who

  418. judged Israel 22 years. And he had 30

  419. sons who rode on 30 donkeys and they had

  420. 30 cities called Havjair to this day

  421. which are in the land of Gilead. And

  422. Jair died and was buried in Kamo. Now if

  423. you can read our first verse uh with a

  424. group of junior high boys without

  425. laughing, you win the prize. Tola, the

  426. son of Pua, son of Dodo, Amanda Visakar.

  427. It just it's a little a little rhy for

  428. me, a little strange. Chapter 10 gives

  429. us these two what what we're going to

  430. call minor judges. Have you ever heard

  431. of the major prophets and the minor

  432. prophets? Do you know why they're called

  433. that?

  434. Because some are long and some are

  435. short. Seriously, that's that's the only

  436. reason. It's not because their messages,

  437. the minor prophets messages are not

  438. quite as important or anything. No, it's

  439. just a shorter book in the Bible. So,

  440. since we get so much on some of our

  441. judges that be our major judges, we're

  442. going to call these our minor judges.

  443. We're going to get two here. And believe

  444. it or not, after the story of today's uh

  445. judge, there'll be three more which we

  446. won't cover today, but there's kind of

  447. bookended around this judge. And I think

  448. there's some biblical reasons for that.

  449. The first is very practical in that this

  450. is a historical record for the Israelite

  451. people, for the Jews, is it not? So even

  452. if the author chooses not to write about

  453. their life story, they still existed in

  454. this spot. And so as a historical

  455. record, it's important for them to be

  456. there. Really practical.

  457. I'm going to reserve my second thought

  458. as to why these minor prophets or minor

  459. judges are listed for the end of the

  460. sermon. And uh that way I don't give

  461. away the whole sermon.

  462. Back to chapter 10 though as the

  463. Israelites are going to begin their

  464. cycle of sin. You guys remember the

  465. cycle, the judges cycle. It starts with

  466. Israel rebelling. God disciplines.

  467. Israel repents. God delivers. So let's

  468. see what's going to happen as far as

  469. Israel rebelling.

  470. The people of Israel again did what was

  471. evil in the sight of the Lord. Does that

  472. sound familiar to anyone? Yes, we've

  473. seen that phrase many times.

  474. And they served the Bales and the

  475. Asheroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of

  476. Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the

  477. Ammonites, and the gods of the

  478. Philistines.

  479. And they forsook the Lord and did not

  480. serve him. So the anger of the Lord was

  481. kindled against Israel, and he sold them

  482. into the hands of the Philistines and

  483. into the hand of the Ammonites,

  484. and they crushed and oppressed the

  485. people of Israel that year. For 18 years

  486. they oppressed all the people of Israel,

  487. who were beyond the Jordan in the land

  488. of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. And

  489. the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to

  490. fight also against Judah and against

  491. Benjamin and against the house of

  492. Ephraim. So that Israel was severely

  493. distressed. Now let's go back to our map

  494. that we kind of saw in our opening uh

  495. sermon on this series. As Israel comes

  496. into the promised land, some settle

  497. these uh these two and a half uh tribes

  498. of Israel settle on the east side of the

  499. Jordan River, which is a really big

  500. landmark, obviously. And then the rest

  501. of Israel goes to the west.

  502. So, we're talking about this area here,

  503. which the whole area is called uh

  504. Gideon,

  505. Gilead. Sorry, I'm getting my G names

  506. messed up. So, this is Gilead over here.

  507. And we'll remember too that when they

  508. entered the land, they were having

  509. troubles with some various people

  510. groups. The the the Moabites,

  511. the Ammonites, um, and the Amalachites.

  512. These were all peoples that way back in

  513. the history of Israel were kin. They

  514. were family. And yet, as they came in,

  515. they didn't want to even let the

  516. Israelites cross through their country.

  517. And some of them battled the Israelites.

  518. And so um these are some of the same

  519. people now that we see in our story

  520. today. Then also there was a couple

  521. people groups, the Philistines and the

  522. Canaanites. And the Canaanites are kind

  523. of all over in there that were not past

  524. kin of of the children of Israel. Not

  525. that everybody doesn't go back to Noah

  526. and for that Adam and Eve, but not not

  527. quite close as kin. So these are the

  528. people groups and it talks about the

  529. fact that they kind of were the

  530. Philistines and the Canaanites were

  531. attacking on this side of the river and

  532. then they also went in and attacked

  533. Judah and Benjamin and Ephraim. So um

  534. the Philistines and the Ammonites right

  535. now they're they're serious enemies and

  536. doing some serious damage to Israel.

  537. That phrase though of the people again

  538. did what was evil in the sight just kind

  539. of starts our cycle every time and it

  540. seems to always this idolatry

  541. um serving the gods of the people around

  542. them. Um previously we've heard about

  543. them uh worshiping the bales or serving

  544. the bales and the ashtaroth but five

  545. more gods are added to the list. It's

  546. like as they live amongst these people

  547. who were they were supposed to get out

  548. of the land and they didn't. They failed

  549. to to do that. So now they're living

  550. with the consequences. They keep

  551. conforming and they're just adding gods

  552. and adding gods and adding gods. And it

  553. says the only one that they did not

  554. serve, the only God in the land they

  555. didn't serve was the Lord God, the true

  556. God, the capital G God. That's the only

  557. one they're not serving.

  558. I said uh that there was five more added

  559. and we had the two before. What's that

  560. make? Five plus two.

  561. Seven. Seven is a very important number

  562. in the Bible, is it not? It is the

  563. number of

  564. perfection completion. Exactly. There's

  565. different ways of saying the same thing.

  566. The the number of completion. So the

  567. reason that the author through Holy

  568. Spirit records these seven is to give us

  569. this fact that they have completely

  570. sold themselves out to these false gods.

  571. and and and and judges has just been one

  572. downhill slide the whole way getting

  573. worse and worse and worse. And there's

  574. consequences. There's consequences for

  575. conforming to the world around us rather

  576. than knowing the words of God, knowing

  577. God himself, and then obeying him,

  578. making him our Lord. This is that this

  579. word for serve is again that they've put

  580. these gods above themselves as their

  581. lords and they're not serving the one

  582. who they who they are loved by who has

  583. delivered them so many times in the

  584. past. And the the one true God, the

  585. righteous God gets angry.

  586. The anger of the Lord was kindled. Think

  587. about stoking a flame. It's just adding

  588. more and more to this flame and the

  589. anger is growing and it's a righteous

  590. righteous anger.

  591. The one true God is not only angry but

  592. he also still loves this people and he

  593. loves them enough to discipline them.

  594. And so he sells them into the hands of

  595. these people that they want to serve.

  596. They're gods. Okay, try serving the

  597. people that uh invented these gods and

  598. let's see how that works out for you.

  599. and it doesn't work out well.

  600. 18 years is a long time. Ask any

  601. 17-year-old, they'll tell you. Or ask

  602. any parent who has raised a child. 18

  603. years is a long time to be crushed and

  604. oppressed. And again, it just keeps

  605. spreading throughout Israel. So, we've

  606. got Israel rebelling. We've got God

  607. disciplining.

  608. And the story continues. And the people

  609. of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying,

  610. "We have sinned against you because we

  611. have forsaken our God and have served

  612. the bales." And the Lord said to the

  613. people of Israel, "Did I not save you

  614. from the Egyptians and from the

  615. Amorites, from the Ammonites, and from

  616. the Philistines, the Sidonians also, and

  617. the Amalachites, and the Malanites

  618. oppressed you, and you cried out to me,

  619. and I saved you out of their hand? Yet

  620. you have forsaken me and served other

  621. gods. Therefore I will save you no more.

  622. Go and cry out to the gods whom you have

  623. chosen. Let them save you in the time of

  624. your distress.

  625. And the people of Israel said to the

  626. Lord, "We have sinned.

  627. Do to us whatever seems good to you.

  628. Only please deliver us this day." So

  629. they put away the foreign gods from

  630. among them and served the Lord and he

  631. became impatient over the misery of

  632. Israel.

  633. I can remember a story about being a

  634. young man and uh back in the day we

  635. didn't know that burn barrels were a bad

  636. thing and uh we were broke so instead of

  637. paying for garbage service I was in

  638. charge of the family burn barrel. It was

  639. a fun task because you know I was 10 or

  640. 11 12 and I like fire. Fire's fun. Seems

  641. like a good, you know, good little thing

  642. to do. So, I'd gather the burnable

  643. things and bring it out to the uh to the

  644. bin. And it was Dad had one of these

  645. plastic garbage cans that uh was like

  646. Rubbermaid or whatever, about this tall,

  647. pretty big, but it would get full and

  648. I'd drag it out. It would be all heavy.

  649. On the way back one day, um you know, it

  650. was empty, not that heavy, but I was a

  651. boy and I'd play and do stupid things

  652. and win stupid prizes. So, I'm just kind

  653. of swinging like Oh, it's easier if I

  654. swing it and use the moment. Oh, man.

  655. Oh, yeah. This is good. So, I'm walking.

  656. I'm swinging. I'm walking. It's just

  657. lazy me. And I'm like, how fast could I

  658. go? And I just spin and spin and spin.

  659. And then I just, oh, how far will it fly

  660. if I let go? But I'm so dizzy and so

  661. disoriented. I have no idea which way

  662. I'm pointed when I let go. I'm pointed

  663. right at my own bedroom window. And she

  664. slams in and it's a two-pane window. One

  665. of the pants breaks and falls in and I'm

  666. like, "No,

  667. there's no way I'm not getting caught.

  668. This is bad."

  669. And so when dad comes home, I'm like,

  670. "Dad, a thing happened." I didn't say I

  671. did a thing. I said a thing happened.

  672. And and the story that I decided to

  673. share with my father was that I was

  674. spinning around with the garbage can and

  675. it just slipped out of my hand, Dad.

  676. Because that makes me look just a little

  677. bit better. You see, it was truly an

  678. accident. I was not doing foolish

  679. things.

  680. And guess what? Uh I got all the

  681. discipline because my dad did not buy

  682. what I was selling. I was not a good

  683. liar because I was in general a pretty

  684. good kid. And when I was trying to lie,

  685. he's like, "No, you were being dumb,

  686. weren't you?"

  687. No,

  688. I got the punishment.

  689. And then the phrase began to appear in

  690. our home. Kevin, are you sorry or are

  691. you sorry you got caught?

  692. Because they knew I was capable of this.

  693. And I tried to pull the over their eyes.

  694. I tried to do this partial confession,

  695. this partial sadness about my sin when I

  696. or I mean this thing that happened and

  697. tried to dress it up. They saw through

  698. it. The worst thing that Israel can do

  699. here is try to polish a turd.

  700. What did they do? And they're like, "Yo,

  701. they they try they actually use the word

  702. sinned, which I'm glad they did upfront.

  703. We've sinned against you, God. Because

  704. again, a lot of times we this culture

  705. especially, we don't like calling things

  706. sin. We don't like other people calling

  707. our stuff sin. How dare you? How dare

  708. you call that sin? Well, I'm just

  709. calling sin what what God calls sin.

  710. That's that's that's my uh my my

  711. objective

  712. and the standard by which I live by. But

  713. we we don't do well calling us sin. So,

  714. I'm really glad they did that much. But

  715. then they're like, you know, we serve

  716. the bales.

  717. How many gods did they serve again?

  718. Seven.

  719. They they totally sold themselves out.

  720. They There was the the totality of the

  721. rebellion. And God knows their hearts,

  722. too. Because the stupidest thing you

  723. could ever do as a believer is think

  724. that you can fool God with a partial

  725. repentance. This partial repentance is

  726. not repentance. And so God comes back at

  727. them. You've shown me the totality of

  728. your rebellion, but you're not even

  729. owning up to it. Then he gives them a

  730. history lesson.

  731. And in fact, he names one, two, three,

  732. four, five, six, seven peoples that he

  733. has delivered them from.

  734. Can I remind you of the totality of my

  735. faithfulness?

  736. In the midst of the totality of your

  737. sin, can I remind you of the totality of

  738. my grace?

  739. to save you even though you don't

  740. deserve it. I love that. Yet, verse 13

  741. says,

  742. "Yet

  743. the way that you respond to the totality

  744. of my forgiveness is to forsake me and

  745. serve other gods."

  746. And so, guess what?

  747. I'm not going to save you anymore.

  748. Why don't you I love the sarcastic

  749. comment, too. Why don't you go cry cry

  750. out to those other gods? Maybe they can

  751. save you.

  752. God's not pleased.

  753. And I think he's also brokenhearted.

  754. I think he's brokenhearted when Kevin,

  755. though he has been forgiven completely.

  756. The totality of my sin wiped away in a

  757. moment on the cross. Past, present,

  758. future sins, all gone. But instead of

  759. making him the Lord of my day, of my

  760. hour, of my minute, of my week, of my

  761. month,

  762. I'm in the driver's seat going, "No,

  763. this is where we're going, God. Let's

  764. go.

  765. I need to get out of that seat. I need

  766. to get in the back seat and blindfold

  767. myself for goodness sake, and let him be

  768. in control of where my life is heading.

  769. Let him be control of what I do and what

  770. I say."

  771. Instead of getting better and better

  772. with each they've gotten worse and worse

  773. and he says, "All right, I'm not going

  774. to do it anymore." But then again, this

  775. tough love, this discipline of the

  776. father, seeing through it and saying,

  777. "I'm not going to save you anymore." It

  778. looks like in verse 15, they finally

  779. really repent.

  780. They literally say, "God, you can do

  781. whatever you think is best.

  782. Whatever you think is best, yet we're

  783. gonna we're going to serve you." They

  784. say, "Yes, I mean, please deliver us,

  785. but we're not in control. You are.

  786. The cure

  787. for conformity is lordship."

  788. They also even prove it. They show with

  789. their actions what their words have just

  790. said. They take the gods from their

  791. homes and from their city centers and

  792. all that and they put them away and they

  793. serve the Lord God. Then became

  794. impatient over their mis misery. And now

  795. it seems he will respond.

  796. Then the Ammonites were called to arms

  797. and they encamped in Gilead. And the

  798. people of Israel came together and they

  799. encamped at Misp. And the people, the

  800. leaders of Gilead, said to one another,

  801. "Who is the man who will begin to fight

  802. against the Ammonites? He shall be head

  803. over all the inhabitants of Gilead."

  804. So, the confrontation is brewing. Again,

  805. it's been 18 years and they've been

  806. whooping up. Uh, and we have not done so

  807. well as the people of Israel here.

  808. But the leaders of Gilead seem to be

  809. playing a a game of not it nose goes

  810. about who's going to be the judge.

  811. It's not leadership at all. If you call

  812. yourself the leaders of Gilead, I don't

  813. see a lot of leadership. It's it's kind

  814. of uh frustrating to me. And I'll tell

  815. you another thing about leadership is if

  816. you are going to follow a man or a woman

  817. in leadership, how much better to find

  818. one that says the Lord is is my Lord.

  819. And and so you know as you follow that

  820. man or woman in ministry or or or maybe

  821. in a business venture, definitely in

  822. marriage,

  823. you know they're being led by the

  824. perfect one. I'm telling you, the

  825. chances of that marriage being wonderful

  826. and thriving and powerful go through the

  827. roof when they're following the Lord

  828. God. Amen.

  829. So, none of them wants to do it. Those

  830. goes, "Well, no, I'm not going to do it.

  831. I'm not going to do it." Draw straws.

  832. No, let's not do that. Uh but but

  833. whatever. Uh whoever will do this will

  834. make the leader some sort of leader or

  835. rulership of whoever it is. Maybe

  836. that'll get somebody to step up. So who

  837. is our judge gonna be?

  838. Chapter 11 verse one. Now Jeffa the

  839. Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but he

  840. was the son of a prostitute.

  841. Gilead was the father of Jeffa. And

  842. Gilead's wife also bore him sons. And

  843. when his wife's sons grew up, they drove

  844. Jeffa out and said to him, "You shall

  845. not have an inheritance in our father's

  846. house, for you are the son of another

  847. woman." Then Jeffa fled from his

  848. brothers and lived in the land of Tob.

  849. And worthless fellows collected around

  850. Jeffa and went out with him. So we are

  851. introduced to this man. He is a mighty

  852. warrior, but kind of a shady past, kind

  853. of a shady beginning. Um, let's talk

  854. again about the 12 tribes of is of

  855. Israel. Um, all 12, they flow from the

  856. lineage of Jacob. Most of them are

  857. Jacob's literal sons, but a couple of

  858. them are grandsons.

  859. And so, um, when they get to Israel, uh,

  860. we get one of the tribes. Let's take one

  861. of the tribes. Remember the one uh that

  862. that spanned both sides of the Jordan?

  863. It was called Manasseh. Let's take

  864. Manasseh for an example. That was one of

  865. Jacob's grandsons. He was a real dude.

  866. Okay? But he was also a people. When you

  867. said Manasseh, you thought of those born

  868. from Manasseh. All the people that kind

  869. of flowed. So they were a a group of

  870. people as well. and the land that they

  871. got as an inheritance. What was it

  872. called on the map? Manasseh. So, in some

  873. of these stories, we could get a little

  874. bit confused because Manasseh is a

  875. person. It is a people and it is a a

  876. place. So, don't get too confused

  877. because Gilead likewise, Gilead is a

  878. man. He was a real dude. And we hear

  879. about Gilead here. He's the father of

  880. our judge Jeffa. So, Gilead, a direct

  881. descendant of Manasseh,

  882. is uh is now fathering children of his

  883. own. And it's a place as well. They just

  884. they call that whole region on the east

  885. Gilead. And it's a people. So, it's uh

  886. don't get too confused. Sometimes if

  887. you're like, "Wait, what did he just

  888. say?" You have to reread it a couple

  889. times. And I did that for you this week.

  890. So, hopefully I can kind of keep us on

  891. the right track. But Gilead, even though

  892. he's the he's the I believe the grandson

  893. of Manasseh, so powerful family, good

  894. family, God-fearing family, Gilead

  895. wasn't a perfect man. And uh he

  896. wandered. He went and had sex with a

  897. prostitute and fathered a son.

  898. Interestingly, he took that that bastard

  899. son into his home, which I think is

  900. fairly upright. A lot of times that that

  901. kind of a child, illegitimate child

  902. would just be banished and have no part.

  903. But it looks like Jeffa raised or Gilead

  904. raised Jeffa.

  905. But his true wife also bore him sons.

  906. And of course, there's going to be

  907. jealousy and division. And when they

  908. grow up, they're like, "No, we're not

  909. sharing our inheritance with you. You're

  910. only our half brother." And so he kind

  911. of gets run out of town.

  912. Now I want to tell you about the the

  913. name Jeffa because it's important.

  914. Biblical names always have a meaning

  915. that kind of helps us understand their

  916. story. It means to open up as in to open

  917. up your mouth to speak or cry or worship

  918. or whatever. And what we're going to see

  919. is that Jeffa has a serious problem with

  920. opening up his mouth to speak when it

  921. says rather foolish things.

  922. Jeffa again is forced out of his home,

  923. forced out of his inheritance, got a

  924. really bad, difficult situation that he

  925. deals with. And I tell you what, when we

  926. as believers go through a difficult

  927. trial, when we're oppressed unfairly,

  928. when we're persecuted unjustly,

  929. when somebody is mistreating us, we we

  930. have two choices to either run toward

  931. God in that trial, tribulation, or

  932. difficulty, or we could run further away

  933. from God. And uh the way that we respond

  934. to trials says a lot about our maturity

  935. in the Lord. And definitely it says a

  936. lot about whether he is our Lord, the

  937. lordship that we are giving to him. Jeff

  938. the unfortunately runs farther away from

  939. the Lord as he's kind of banished out of

  940. his family and he surrounds himself with

  941. what? Worthless fellows who went out

  942. with him. This is the picture of

  943. somebody who takes on like a pirate or

  944. raider, you know, kind of a thief, a

  945. band of of thieves. So, picture the old

  946. western where, you know, the trains

  947. going by with the gold and all the

  948. outlaws come out following one really

  949. tough, strong guy and they rob the train

  950. of its gold. This is the kind of life

  951. that he chose to live, a life of

  952. violence and a life of crime. So, it's

  953. really sad.

  954. After a time, the Ammonites made war

  955. against Israel. And when the Ammonites

  956. made war against Israel, the elders of

  957. Gilead went to bring Jeffa from the land

  958. of Tob. And they said to Jeffa, "Come

  959. and be our leader that we may fight

  960. against the Ammonites." But Jeffa said

  961. to the letters leader or the elders of

  962. Gilead, "Did you not hate me and drive

  963. me out of my father's house? Why have

  964. you come to me now when you're in

  965. distress?" And the elders of Gilead said

  966. to Jeffa, "That is why we have turned to

  967. you now, that you may go with us and

  968. fight against the Ammonites and be our

  969. head over all the inhabitants of

  970. Gilead."

  971. So again, remember they're playing not

  972. it. They decide uh we've heard of Jeffa.

  973. He's become very powerful. He's a minor

  974. warrior. Has all these men that follow

  975. him. He's ruthless. He's brutal. He gets

  976. stuff done. Yeah. Maybe his, you know,

  977. his his birth was a little scandalous,

  978. but this guy's a boss. We need him to be

  979. the one that leads us into battle.

  980. Now, comically, the way that this uh

  981. interaction happens is very similar to

  982. what happened with the Israelites when

  983. they go to God. It starts with the

  984. halfbaked ask,

  985. the half repentance ask from Israel, and

  986. then there's a rebuff, a rebuttal like,

  987. "Yeah, seriously." You know, God says,

  988. "What? You come to me when you're in

  989. trouble and that's all that that's all

  990. you want from me is your little vending

  991. machine, your your emergency room. Am I

  992. the emergency parachute? That's all I am

  993. to you?" And then they come back with

  994. the full ask and the full repentance and

  995. similar thing. And it's again God

  996. calling our attention to this thing so

  997. that we understand when we come to the

  998. Lord, we come to him on bended knee

  999. giving him all the control and we don't

1000. hold anything back. That's the recipe.

1001. So, it's kind of a fun little parallel

1002. there. Jeffa said to the leader or to

1003. the elders of Gilead, "If you bring me

1004. home again to fight against the

1005. Ammonites and the Lord gives them over

1006. to me, I will be your head." And the

1007. elders of Gilead said to Jeffa, "The

1008. Lord will be witness between us if we

1009. don't do not do as you say." So, Jeff

1010. went with the elders of Gilead, and the

1011. people made him head and leader over

1012. them. And Jeff thus spoke all his words

1013. before the Lord at Misva.

1014. Really cool. This is one example of a

1015. time where where Jeffa opens his mouth

1016. and out comes the name of the Lord. He's

1017. the first to invoke invoke the name of

1018. the Lord and uh and the elders are like,

1019. "Yeah, may the Lord be the witness

1020. between us." And then again, he speaks

1021. all his words when he gets there before

1022. the Lord. So, it's it's wonderful to see

1023. that. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep

1024. kind of going that way. And and just

1025. invoking the name of the Lord doesn't

1026. mean that you truly know the Lord, his

1027. his personality, his ways, how he does

1028. business, what he's like. You don't know

1029. those things. When you don't understand

1030. the Lord, sometimes you make foolish

1031. decisions. So, before they're all

1032. gathered for battle, uh it's looking

1033. like it's going to happen. We get Jeff.

1034. We get him home. speak these words

1035. before the Lord. And Jeffa is actually

1036. going to try the diplomatic approach

1037. first. This this could work. Then Jeff

1038. sent messengers to the king of the

1039. Ammonites and said, "What do you have

1040. against me that you have come to me to

1041. fight against my land?" And the king of

1042. the Ammonites answered the messengers of

1043. Jeffa because Israel on coming up from

1044. Egypt took away my land from the Arnam

1045. to the Jabok and to the Jordan. Now

  1046. therefore restore it peaceably.

1047. The first things the words that come out

1048. of his mouth in this uh tells us that

1049. he's embraced his new role as ruler

1050. because we have I I I and my. Why do you

1051. come against me? You've come to me to

1052. fight against my land. Whose land is the

  1053. promised land? That's that's the Lord's

  1054. land. It's the Lord's people that you're

1055. making war against. And Jeff the already

1056. is kind of getting a little bit of a big

1057. head in his new leadership role here.

1058. Not a good sign. And not a good sign

1059. that the Amorites seem to say, "No, uh,

1060. unconditional surrender and that's all

1061. we'll take. Well, this isn't going to

1062. work for us." And the king is wrong on

1063. so many of his facts that he's going to

1064. try to correct that real quickly. Jeffa

  1065. again sent messengers

1066. to the king of the Ammonites and said to

1067. them, "Thus says Jeffa, Israel did not

1068. take away the land of Moab or the land

1069. of the Ammonites. But when they came up

  1070. from Egypt,

1071. Israel went through the wilderness to

1072. the Red Sea and came to Cadesh." Israel

1073. then sent messengers to the king of

1074. Edom, saying, "Please let us pass

1075. through your land." But the king of

1076. Edom, again, old old kin, old

1077. They should be okay with the Israelites.

1078. But the king of Edom would not listen.

1079. And they sent also to the king of Moab,

1080. but he would not consent. So Israel

1081. remained at Cadesh. Then they journeyed

1082. through the wilderness and went around

1083. the land of Edom and the land of Moab

1084. and arrived on the east side of the land

1085. of Moab and camped on the other side of

1086. the Arnon. But they did not enter the

1087. territory of Moab. For the Arnon was the

  1088. boundary of Moab.

1089. Israel then sent messengers to Sihon,

1090. king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon.

1091. And Israel said to him, "Please, let us

1092. pass through your land to our country."

1093. But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass

1094. through his territory. So Sion gathered

1095. all his people together and encamped

1096. Johaz and fought with Israel. And the

1097. Lord, the God of Israel, gave Si and all

1098. his people into the hands of Israel, and

1099. they defeated them. So Israel took

1100. possession of all of the land of the

1101. Amorites who inhabited that country. And

1102. they took possession of all the

1103. territory of the Amorites from the Arnon

1104. to the Jabok and from the wilderness to

1105. the Jordan. So then the Lord, the God of

1106. Israel, dispossessed the Amorites from

1107. before his people Israel. And are you to

1108. take possession of them? Will you not

1109. possess what Kimosh your God gives you

1110. to possess? and all that the Lord our

1111. God has dispossessed before us, we will

1112. possess. Now, are you any better than

1113. Bailac, the son of Zippor, king of Moab?

1114. Did he ever contend against Israel? Or

1115. or did he ever go to war with them?

1116. While Israel lived in Heshbon and its

1117. villages, and in Aror and its villages,

1118. and in all the cities that are on the

1119. banks of the Arnon 300 years, why did

1120. you not deliver them within that time? I

1121. therefore have not sinned against you,

1122. and you do me wrong by making war on me.

1123. The Lord, the judge, decide this day

1124. between the people of Israel and the

1125. people of Ammon. But the king of the

1126. Ammonites did not listen to the words of

1127. Jeff that he sent to him. Let me

1128. summarize this all for you. I know that

1129. was a lot. He gives three main arguments

1130. of why the king of of Ammon is wrong.

1131. The first is a historical argument. He

1132. sets the record straight saying,

1133. "Listen, after all the trouble we

1134. endured trying to make way to our land

1135. and nobody would let us go through, we

1136. went around and around and around and

1137. around and and we people even killed us.

1138. They they battled against us and then

1139. finally we we beat Sihon so that we

1140. could go through his land and we

1141. possessed that land because we won."

1142. Then he goes to kind of a theological

1143. argument and and the the assumption of

1144. anybody of that day that served any god

1145. was that if your god because their god

1146. Kimosh was mentioned he's the god of

1147. war. If your god gives you a victory in

1148. battle he also gives you the land of

1149. that people that that's just the spoils

1150. of the war. And so he says again

1151. theologically um and he's using their

1152. theology not necessarily God's theology

1153. but we also know that God did give them

1154. the land. So it it works both ways but

1155. he uses their own religious premises to

1156. say that the Lord God of Israel gave

1157. them the land and so that's why they

1158. have it. And then finally he goes for

1159. kind of a legal precedent. He says it's

1160. been 300 years of us living in this land

1161. and nobody's challenged us to the rights

1162. of the land. None of these kings that

1163. could have have said, "No, you don't

1164. belong here." And now now now you're

1165. telling us we don't belong here. It's

1166. almost like a squatter's rights kind of

1167. an argument there. But it's like this

1168. doesn't make any legal sense either. So

1169. whether it be the theological, the

1170. historical, or the legal precedent

1171. doesn't matter because the king who is

1172. wrong uh doesn't care and he wants to

1173. kill the Israelites anyway. And he

1174. didn't listen. So the battle is

  1175. inevitable.

1176. Then the spirit of the Lord was upon

1177. Jeffa, and he passed through Gilead and

1178. Manasseh, and passed on to Mispa of

1179. Gilead. And from Mispa of Gilead, he

1180. passed on to the Ammonites. And Jeff

1181. thou made a vow to the Lord, and said,

1182. "If you will give the Ammonites into my

1183. hand, then whatever comes out from the

1184. doors of my house to meet me when I

1185. return in peace from the Ammonites shall

1186. be the Lord's, and I will offer it up

  1187. for a burnt offering."

1188. So Jeffda crossed over to the Ammonites

1189. to fight against them. And the Lord gave

1190. them into his hand and he struck them

1191. from our to the neighborhood of Minith

1192. 20 cities and as far far as Abel Carmen

1193. with a great blow. So the Ammonites were

1194. subdued before the people of Israel.

1195. We need to pay attention to the order of

  1196. events in verses 29 through31.

1197. The first thing that happens, the very

1198. first thing as he's going to be this

1199. judge, this deliverer of the Lord, the

1200. spirit of the Lord comes upon Jeffa,

1201. infusing him with power and authority

  1202. and inevitable victory.

1203. Then in verse 30, he opens up Jeff the

1204. open up boy opens up his mouth and makes

1205. an oath to the Lord.

1206. an incredibly foolish vow he makes. In

1207. fact, he adopts a Canaanite practice.

1208. And then and and the Canaanites believed

1209. and he's he's highly Canaanized at this

1210. point. He's lived there too long. Again,

1211. he adopted this life of violence and

1212. pillaging and warfare and murder and

  1213. thievery. He's he's too Canaanized. And

1214. so, the Canaanites thought they needed

1215. to appease their gods with bribery and

1216. manipulation. They had to get their God

1217. to do what they wanted them to do,

1218. which is the exact opposite of faith,

1219. which he should have been infused with

1220. when the spirit of the Lord comes upon

1221. him. And and he knows now he's God's

1222. judge. There's a history of of what nine

1223. or 10 judges up until now. He knows what

1224. happens. They tell these stories. They

  1225. know.

1226. But instead of faith, he decides to make

1227. this vow and try to bribe God into doing

  1228. what he wants.

1229. Not only that, but the bribe that he

1230. uses is strictly forget forbidden by

  1231. God's laws.

1232. Whatever comes out from my house, he

1233. says that I'm going to offer as a burnt

1234. offering. In fact, whatever can be

  1235. translated whomever.

1236. So his plan is to sacrifice one of his

1237. servants or or or business managers or

1238. somebody. He's going to sacrifice them a

  1239. human sacrifice

1240. so that God will give him victory.

1241. Kimosh, the god of the Ammonites, he

1242. required human sacrifices to appease

1243. him. So this is demonic Canaanite

  1244. behavior

1245. that he he foolishly opens his mouth and

  1246. vows to the Lord.

1247. Verses 32 and 33 are hilarious to me.

1248. They go by like a blank. This is the

1249. actual battle. This is all the author

1250. needs to really talk about because

1251. battle apparently even though it was 20

1252. cities and it's this massive area and

  1253. this massive victory, he's like that's

1254. not the important part. So he quickly

1255. tells us that the battle is won and the

1256. battle is not won because keep uh

1257. because he made a vow. The battle is won

1258. because the Lord gave them into his

1259. hand. He gets the credit. It was not

1260. because of this vow. And so he heads

  1261. home.

1262. Then Jeff came to his home at Msot and

1263. behold his daughter came out to meet him

1264. with tambourines and with dances. She

1265. was his only child. Besides her, he had

1266. neither son nor daughter. And as soon as

1267. he saw her, he tore his clothes and

1268. said, "Alas, my daughter, you have

1269. brought me very low and and you've

1270. become the cause of great trouble for

1271. me, for I have opened up my mouth to the

1272. Lord, and I cannot take back my vow."

1273. I have no idea why it didn't occur to

1274. this man that it could be his only

1275. child, a precious daughter, who comes

1276. out to greet him first.

1277. Perhaps he expected her to be staying

1278. with a relative while he was away.

1279. Perhaps it was it was like always a

  1280. servant that came first.

1281. We don't know. But we do know the

1282. consequences of his conformity to the

  1283. Canaanite culture around him.

1284. Man, even his words as he finds out are

1285. foolish. He blames her. Alas, you you

1286. have brought me low. No, Jeffa, you

1287. brought yourself low. You didn't need to

1288. do that. It was sinful.

1289. You've become the cause of great trouble

1290. to me. No, your conformity was the great

  1291. trouble to you.

1292. And and the consequences of conformity

1293. often go far beyond just consequences

  1294. for me.

1295. But when I conform to the world, it

1296. impacts my wife. It impacts my children.

  1297. It impacts my community.

1298. It impacts my church. The consequences

  1299. are great.

1300. You open your mouth. And she said to

1301. him, "My father, you have opened your

1302. mouth to the Lord. Do to me according to

1303. what has gone out of your mouth, now

1304. that the Lord has avenged you on your

1305. enemies, on the Ammonites." So she said

1306. to her father, "Let this thing be done

1307. for me. Let me alone two months that I

1308. may go up and down on the mountains and

1309. weep for my virginity, I and my

  1310. companions."

1311. So he said, "Go." Then he sent her away

1312. for two months, and she departed. she

1313. and her companions and wept for her

1314. virginity on the mountains. And at the

1315. end of two months, she returned to her

1316. father who did with her according to his

1317. vow that he had made. She had never

1318. known a man. And it became a custom in

1319. Israel that the daughters of Israel went

1320. year by year to lament the daughter of

1321. Jeffth the Gileadite four days in the

  1322. year.

1323. I was talking to my dad about the end of

1324. Judges. She's like, I am really not

1325. looking forward to the story of Jeff,

1326. though. I was like, yeah, it's hard.

1327. It's really hard. An innocent young girl

1328. killed because of the foolish talk of

  1329. her father.

1330. Some scholars and pastors have tried to

1331. make the story a little bit more

1332. palatable by saying, you know, perhaps

1333. uh perhaps she just had to live as a

1334. virgin the rest of her life. It talks

1335. about her virginity twice. She had to

1336. gave up hopes of a family or whatever.

1337. Um, unfortunately, the text doesn't seem

  1338. to allow for that.

1339. First of all, because he literally said

1340. in his vow that he was going to do what?

1341. Offer up for a burnt offering.

1342. That's what was to be done.

1343. Secondly, if it was simply her

1344. virginity, why the why the two months in

  1345. the mountains?

1346. She was either a virgin or or she was

1347. not. She couldn't become that. And then

1348. And then her sentence starts after two

1349. months. Her sentence of Virginia. No,

1350. she already was. So it just doesn't

1351. really logically make sense either.

1352. But here's the most difficult part of

  1353. the story.

1354. Scholars have pointed out that there are

  1355. at least

  1356. three ways

1357. that the law of God gave an escape to

1358. you when you made a foolish vow.

1359. At least three. There were three legal

1360. options for Jeffa to not have to do this

1361. thing. But he did not know his God. He

1362. did not know God's words.

1363. He didn't understand the God of grace.

1364. First one is called the redemption of

1365. purpose of persons in Leviticus chapter

    Leviticus 27 chapter mention

1366. 27. And it provide uh provided a

1367. specific mechanism to buy back a person

1368. dedicated to God by paying a specific

1369. price to the priest was written in

  1370. there.

1371. Atonement for foolish vows. Leviticus

    Leviticus 5 chapter mention

1372. chapter 5. If someone swears a rash

1373. oath, they could confess their guilt,

1374. repent, and offer a sin offering instead

1375. of carrying out that destructive vow.

1376. Super clear, really easy one to use. And

1377. third, the vow itself, because it

  1378. violated Torah,

1379. was considered null and void.

  1380. Deuteronomy 12. So,

1381. uh human sacrifice is against the Torah.

1382. That that is not a vow that's valid

1383. because you shouldn't have ever made it.

1384. And again, there was consequences. He

1385. would have to repent. You would have to

1386. offer sacrifices, go before the Lord,

1387. admit these things. But because he's so

1388. cananized that he foolishly thinks that

1389. he has to fulfill this vow or or or

1390. somehow heavenly father would would hurt

1391. him or kill him or take the victory away

1392. from him. He pridefully believes he's

1393. got to do it so he doesn't face

1394. destruction or maybe just so he doesn't

  1395. have to face shame.

1396. And nobody nobody stops this man. Not

  1397. even his own daughter.

1398. And again, she's young. She doesn't know

1399. better. She's still a victim in this

1400. whole thing. But I think this is a

1401. difficult but important part of the

1402. story of judges because again of the

1403. decline that we keep seeing over and

1404. over over and over till we get to this

1405. place where they're killing their own

  1406. children.

1407. They did not know God and they paid the

  1408. price.

  1409. Sadly, Jeff's foolishness doesn't stop

1410. here. There's one more tragic story in

1411. the chapter. The men of Ephraim were

1412. called to arms. They crossed Zaffon and

1413. said to Jeffa, "Why why did you cross

1414. over to fight against the Ammonites and

1415. did not call us to go with you? We will

1416. burn your house over you with fire."

1417. Jeffa said to them, "I and my people had

1418. a great dispute with the Ammonites. And

1419. when I called you, you didn't save me

1420. from their hand. And when I saw that you

1421. would not save me, I took my life in my

1422. hand and crossed over against the

1423. Ammonites, and the Lord gave them into

1424. my hand. Why then have you come up to me

1425. this day to fight against me?

1426. I've heard it said before that um and

1427. this is how I truly try to live as a

1428. leader, that that the great leaders um

1429. they give away the credit and they take

1430. the blame. If something goes wrong,

1431. that's on me. Not on my team. That's on

1432. me. and they take the blame. But when

1433. something goes right, they they're so

1434. quick to point out, "No, no, this team

1435. right here, they did that thing. They

  1436. were amazing."

1437. But in in this scenario, this is

1438. actually the second time that the men of

1439. Ephraim get all hurt that they weren't

1440. involved in the battle because they want

  1441. the glory.

1442. We've all seen our, you know, our

1443. politicians play this game. They they

1444. don't want to take any of the risk up

1445. front, but if something goes well,

1446. they'll definitely take the credit.

1447. And Jeffa even says, "Hey, I asked you.

1448. I asked you to come and you didn't

1449. respond." So, you're not going to just,

1450. you know, not take the risk and and take

1451. the reward. But instead of his words

1452. swaying them, which Ephraim was kind of

1453. swayed before by another judge, he's

1454. he's going to go straight to war. And

  1455. everyone's they're just bloodthirsty at

1456. this point. Then Jeffa gathered all the

1457. men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim.

1458. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim

1459. because they said, "You are fugitives of

1460. Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of

1461. Ephraim and Manasseh." And the

1462. Gileadites captured the fords of the

1463. Jordan against the Ephromites. And when

1464. any of the fugitives of Ephraim said,

1465. "Let me go over," the men of Gilead said

1466. to them, "Are you an Ephraimite?" When

1467. he said, "No." They said to him, "Then

  1468. say Shibth."

1469. And he said, "Caleth." for he could not

1470. pronounce it right. Then they seized him

1471. and slaughtered him at the forge of the

1472. Jordan. At that time 42,000

1473. of the Ephromites fell. Jeffa judged

1474. Israel six years. Then Jeffa the

1475. Gileadite died and was buried in his

  1476. city in Gilead.

  1477. Israelite on Israelite carnage.

1478. Again, this is the depths to which we

  1479. have sunk and plummeted.

1480. Foolish, heated words that lead to

1481. unspeakable violence on your own

  1482. countrymen.

1483. And not only not just any country, the

  1484. covenant people of Israel.

1485. What I found especially painful as I was

1486. looking at the 12 tribes of Israel.

1487. Remember, a couple of them were

1488. grandsons whereas others were sons of

1489. Jacob. Guess who the grandsons were?

1490. They were the sons of Joseph. They were

  1491. Manasseh and Ephraim.

1492. So those families should have been

1493. closer than any other tribes. Blood

1494. brothers they come from and they kill

  1495. each other.

1496. There's some strange game of can you

1497. pronounce the word because you have

1498. different accents. Apparently that they

1499. couldn't pronounce the shh sound. When I

  1500. was a child I couldn't say s's, L's, ps

1501. or rs. So slippers was a very difficult

  1502. word for me.

1503. Luckily I call them hoowi.

1504. And to this day my mother and I, we call

1505. our slippers our our woowise.

  1506. I don't know where I got it, but I think

  1507. it'll catch on.

1508. But again, this this this kind of

1509. normalized bloodshed was exactly what

  1510. the Canaanites did.

1511. And the summary in verse seven points to

1512. the shame of Jeffa. Verse 7 tells us he

1513. only ruled six years, shortest of any

  1514. judge in judges.

1515. We weren't even given the name of the

1516. city. He gets buried in his city in

1517. Gilead. So it's it's kind of this

1518. unmarked grave kind of a picture that we

1519. get which is shameful in that culture.

1520. Unlike previous judges, there are no

1521. years of rest for the land. There's no

  1522. peace years

  1523. at all.

1524. And we know that he had no offspring.

1525. His daughter was never married. And so

1526. his family name dies out as well.

1527. which I think is the second reason why

1528. the minor judges are listed before and

1529. after the contrast between those five

1530. judges and the length of rule and the

1531. amount of children they had and

1532. sometimes some of them rode donkeys and

1533. camels and such. This this again this

  1534. offspring feeling

1535. to show the contrast of Jeff, a man who

1536. would not bend his knee truly to the

1537. Lord and who foolishly just opened his

1538. mouth and said whatever he thought and

1539. even when he did something wrong didn't

1540. make it right. When he said something

1541. foolish didn't make it right and spare

1542. his own child but killed her.

1543. Truly the cure for conformity is

  1544. lordship.

1545. to say, "God, you are God and I am not.

1546. You know everything. I know nothing.

1547. You are full of grace and mercy, and I

1548. just throw myself whatever you want to

1549. do with me. Lord, you do whatever you

1550. think is best, but I'm going to serve

1551. you and serve you only."

1552. Heavenly Father, I pray that you would

1553. help us first of all to be men and women

1554. of wise words and not foolish words.

1555. Help us to be men and women who open up

1556. our mouth less often. That as James

1557. says, we would be quick to listen, slow

1558. to speak, and slow to become angry. That

1559. we may live a life that glorifies you

1560. and that protects those around us.

1561. Lord, forgive us for the foolish vows

1562. we've made previously, for the foolish

1563. things that we've said. Forgive us for

  1564. our selfishness, self-centerness.

1565. forgive us for making you our co-pilot.

1566. And today we bend our knee to you. We

1567. submit ourselves to you. And we say

1568. thank you for the forgiveness that we

1569. have in Jesus Christ. Thank you that

1570. he's our savior. And we also want him to

1571. be our Lord. In the powerful and

1572. precious name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

1573. As you bend your knee to the Lord, let's

1574. remember what made it possible for us to

1575. be forgiven. And that's the cross of

  1576. Jesus Christ.

1577. that he willingly gave up paradise in

1578. heaven and his his authority and his his

1579. command. He gave it all up. He became a

1580. man and lived the perfect life that you

1581. and I could not. And then he died in our

1582. place that we could be called children

1583. of God as well. We have communion tables

  1584. set up that's just a self-service

1585. communion if you'd like to take it while

1586. we sing a few more songs in response. Uh

1587. we do it every week. Uh, some people

1588. take it every week, some people do it

1589. every other week. So, you won't you

1590. won't stick out if you don't take

1591. communion today. But make sure your

  1592. heart's right with the Lord. You've

1593. confessed your sin. You've bent your

1594. knee to him. And take that bread that

1595. represents the the body of Jesus Christ

1596. given for you. Go ahead and dip it into

1597. the juice or dip it into the wine just

1598. so we can stay sanitary with with one

1599. cup. And thank him for the blood that

1600. flowed for you as well.

  1601. for my

  1602. for my daily

  1603. bread.

  1604. I depend on you.

  1605. I depend on you

1606. for the sun to rise,

1607. for my sleep at night.

  1608. I depend on you.

1609. You're the way, the truth, and the life.

1610. >> You're the well that never runs dry.

1611. I'm the branch and you are the vine.

1612. Draw me close and teach me to

  1613. >> where the spirit

  1614. leads

  1615. as I'm following.

  1616. >> I depend on you.

  1617. I depend on you

  1618. for the victory

1619. still in front of me.

  1620. I depend on you.

1621. You're the way, the truth, and the life.

1622. You're the well that never runs dry.

1623. I'm the branch and you are the vine.

1624. Draw me close and teach me to abide. Be

1625. my strength, my song in the night.

1626. Be my own, my treasure, my prize.

  1627. I am yours forever. You're mine.

1628. Draw me close and teach me to hide.

1629. When I pass through death,

  1630. as I enter

  1631. rest,

  1632. I depend on you.

  1633. I depend on you

  1634. for eternal

  1635. life

1636. to be raised with Christ.

  1637. I depend on you.

1638. Yes, I depend on you.

1639. You're the way, the truth, and the life.

1640. You're the well that never runs dry.

1641. I'm the branch, and you are the vine.

1642. Draw me close and teach me to lie. Be my

1643. strength, my song in the night.

1644. Be my all, my treasure, my prize.

  1645. I am yours forever. You're mine.

1646. Draw me close and teach me to abide.

  1647. I depend on you.

1648. I depend on you. Oh, I depend on you.

  1649. I depend on you.

  1650. How great the chasm

1651. that lay between us. How high the

  1652. mountain

  1653. I could not climb.

  1654. In desperation,

  1655. I turned to heaven

1656. and spoke your name into the night.

  1657. Then through the darkness,

  1658. your loving kindness

  1659. tore through the shadows

  1660. of my soul.

  1661. The work is finished.

  1662. The end is written.

  1663. Jesus Christ my living.

  1664. Who could imagine

  1665. so great a mercy?

  1666. What heart could fathom

  1667. such boundless grace

  1668. the God of aes

  1669. down from glory

1670. to wear my sin and bear my shame.

  1671. The cross has spoken.

  1672. I am forgi.

1673. The King of Kings calls me his own.

  1674. >> Beautiful Savior.

  1675. I'm yours forever.

  1676. Jesus Christ my livinging

  1677. hope.

  1678. Hallelujah.

1679. Praise the one who set me free.

  1680. Hallelujah.

1681. Death has lost its grip on me. You have

1682. broken every chain. There's salvation in

1683. your name. Jesus Christ my living.

  1684. Sing hallelujah. Hallelujah.

1685. Praise the one who set me free.

  1686. Hallelujah.

1687. Death has lost its grip on me. You have

1688. broken every chain as salvation in your

1689. name. Jesus Christ my living.

  1690. Then came the morning

  1691. that sealed the promise.

  1692. Your buried body

  1693. began to breathe.

  1694. Out of the silence,

  1695. the roaring lion

1696. declared the grave has no claim on me.

  1697. Then came the morning

  1698. that sealed the proise.

  1699. Your buried body

  1700. began to breathe.

  1701. Out of the silence,

  1702. the roaring lion

1703. declared the grave has no claim on me.

1704. >> Jesus, yours is the victory.

  1705. Oh,

  1706. hallelujah.

1707. There's no one who set me free.

  1708. Hallelujah.

1709. He has lost his grip on me. You have

1710. broken every chain and salvation in your

1711. name. Jesus Christ my living

  1712. hope.

  1713. Jesus Christ my living.

1714. Oh God you are my livinging

  1715. hope.

  1716. Amen.

1717. We serve a risen savior, a victorious

1718. one, and he deserves to be the Lord of

1719. our lives because his is the kingdom,

1720. his glory forever and ever. Amen. Let's

1721. uh in our last song here, let's joyfully

1722. give to the Lord uh whatever he calls

1723. you to give and do so cheerfully because

1724. the Lord loves a cheerful giver. If

1725. you're not a member of our church or a

1726. part of our church family yet, please

1727. don't give. We don't want anything from

1728. you. Uh the Lord just wants your bent

1729. knee and we want your friendship. So

1730. make sure you stick around for a few

1731. minutes after the service ends.

1732. Sometimes we just run down that hall

1733. like you guys are in a race. So stick

1734. around for a little bit, meet somebody

1735. you might not know. Uh greet the

1736. pastors, ask us any questions you might

  1737. have and let's worship.

1738. Yours is the kingdom and the power and

1739. the glory forever is yours. Heaven and

1740. earth bow down now in the wonder of your

  1741. name.

1742. Heaven is open, death is broken, and the

1743. glory forever is yours. Nothing can

1744. overcome the power of your name. King

1745. above kings. All the universe will sing.

1746. Everlasting God, you are wonderful.

  1747. You are wonderful.

1748. And the shout of the earth will be your

  1749. praise.

1768. wonderful name. All the glory

1772. the king above kings. All the universe

1773. will sing. Everlasting God, you are

  1774. wonderful.

  1775. You are wonderful.

1776. King above kings. All the universe will

1777. sing. Everlasting God, you are

  1778. wonderful.

  1779. You are wonderful.

1780. And the shout out of the earth will be

  1781. your praise.

1782. The God forever and the light unto all

1783. be your wonderful day. For the glory,

  1784. Lord is yours,

1794. You are dismissed. Have a great week,

  1795. guys.

  1796. Heat. Heat.

  1797. Heat. Heat. N.
