  11. morning my name is Brian and I get to serve on the pastoral staff here and

  12. Katie is with us she's our kids director this morning well every morning but I

  13. just wanted to share with you a few things coming up I can't believe we're

  14. in the summertime right yeah we got some good weather to go along with that's

  15. great a couple of things to point out to you we got some summer schedules coming

  16. up the setup and teardown has changed a little bit these are just a couple

  17. highlights for you if you can keep up with the moving screen don't don't look

  18. if you get motion sickness but we've got a service opportunity come on July 4th

  19. I'll tell you more about that but then the church picnic on August 18th so just

  20. a few things to mark your calendar with and what did I say yeah 16th it was just

  21. moving so fast I couldn't it looked like an eight but yeah so mark your

  22. calendar take a snapshot of that you can find all this information on Church

  23. Center as well we'll move on to the next one and I want to share with you an

  24. opportunity that we have coming up tomorrow is our Dunes youth camp they

  25. leave tomorrow noon so make sure you show up before noon at our Lacey campus

  26. with your youth we have a ton I think I heard the number 40 youth are gonna go

  27. to this camp and this is I think number year number three we'll go with three

  28. because no one corrected me year number three it's a great retreat for our youth

  29. to connect with each other connect with God and take their faith seriously so

  30. that'd be praying for them throughout the week and our leaders as well but

  31. again tomorrow we leave at noon so what time you gonna be there 1159 no yeah

  32. sure 1030 you can or 1130 1030 work all right good got that for tomorrow the

  33. next one we have to share with you is a service opportunity coming up I told you

  34. about this 4th of July we've got a great event here in DuPont that we're gonna be

  35. a part of we're gonna have a booth and with some games and activities and we

  36. just need some people to help staff that and be present it's really great to set

  37. up a booth and have games and activities but we really want to highlight the

  38. presence that our people have in our community if you're available on the 4th

  39. of July it's a Saturday this year so you can't tell me oh I got to work I

  40. can't be there but if you want to be helping out with our team that'd be

  41. great we also got an invite from the city of DuPont to help with some traffic

  42. directing so if you want to be a part of that and can help out great check on

  43. Church Center or let Pastor Mark or myself know and we'll get you plugged in

  44. we good all right what's next what a season it has been for so many families

  45. and people celebrating some great accomplishments and so I know for our

  46. super that's a super meaningful year I've had a lot of youth over the years

  47. graduate and I just wanted to recognize our graduates whether it's high school

  48. or a college degree or something are there any graduates that we have here

  49. today and if there are would you mind standing up for us oh yeah I really like

  50. that guy that's my son and he's graduating he graduated this year he

  51. headed off to college in the fall and so we just wanted to I want to pray over

  52. our graduates and either you that haven't the family aren't here today but

  53. just pray over that such a huge accomplishment huge milestone and I

  54. don't want to gloss over it for anybody that is out there pursuing for their

  55. education I got thank you for walking with us through education and the value

  56. of learning and growing and may the students that are graduating dedicate

  57. themselves to serving you and may this be a milestone in their lives that they

  58. can move forward on build from and launch out into the season to grow

  59. expand develop but really bring honor to you with what the opportunity you've

  60. given to them so thank you for walking with our graduates thanks for walking

  61. with my graduate we just praise you for the hard work that you have walked them

  62. through and we send them out and commission them to continue their

  63. education and continue their pursuits and dedicate them to you thank you in

  64. your name we pray amen we also are in the season of celebrating some other

  65. folks today happy Father's Day okay all right well I was going to ask the kids

  66. what the special day is but you kind of already said it but kids what's today

  67. yeah we love our dads we love our dad so much and if you have been here the last

  68. few years you probably know what's coming but we always give our dads root

  69. beer on Father's Day so before people run up here I'd like to give some

  70. instruction okay even if there's like five kids in your family your dad's

  71. still just gonna get one root beer we've had we've had dads with armfuls of root

  72. beers before so as a family figure out which kid is going to come up or all the

  73. kids can come up but grab one root beer for your dad now we do have some dads

  74. here today and their kids aren't with them and so I hope that those dads will

  75. be brave enough to raise their hand so kids who don't have a dad with them to

  76. give a root beer to can still give a root beer to a different dad and if I

  77. see you and I know you're a dad and you're not raising your hand I will

  78. probably like point you out awkwardly so just raise your hand if you're a dad we

  79. have coolers up here with root beer on ice and dads you can drink it during

  80. church you don't have to save it so we should be hearing lots of cans being

  81. popped open or bottles being popped open all right kids you can come up in a calm

  82. orderly way oh also if you're an adult and your dad is with you please come get

  83. a root beer if you're a teenager you better come up and get a root beer for

  84. your dad I see people not coming up get a root beer for your dad if you don't

  85. have a dad with you find someone else who has root beer Luke and Matthew's dad

  86. is not raising his hand someone give one to Luke and Matthew's dad Jeremy is a

  87. dad okay Luke and Matthew's dad I'm going to bring you one if you're not

  88. gonna raise your hand oh good job good job Seth wait where are you going seth

  89. Seth okay I want to make sure everybody got one if they're a dad okay also if

  90. your dad isn't here with you today get your dad a root beer okay so we will be

  91. dismissing in a couple of minutes as we get everyone back to their seats I do

  92. have a little request if you happen to be a junior helper and you're here today

  93. we could really use your help in Kidman because we're all doing projects for

  94. dads so particularly in preschool where I will be I would love a helper okay kids

  95. you are dismissed first through fifth lines up in the hall preschool lines up

  96. by the door all right again happy Father's Day oh yeah we've got a special

  97. guest with us this morning our lead pastor Kevin Pitts is here to share God's

  98. Word with us this morning so I trust you will open your hearts and minds to him

  99. he's gonna share this morning from Galatians one other update for you is

  100. after church today we're gonna clear out this gym and we're gonna take all of our

  101. equipment and everything to the cafeteria so if you're available to stick around

  102. afterwards and help us make that migration we can call it a migration yeah

  103. that'd be great but fill your coffee cup grab a donut eat your eat your root beer

  104. video operator could you would you could you please switch over to the

  105. other input for me

  106. all right looks like the kids have exited as Brian said my name is Kevin

  107. Pitts stoked to be here with you guys this morning and I always feel bad when

  108. when we do one of these three teaches because I don't get to say hi to you

  109. before or after so just know I would want to I would want to love you in

  110. person but you can have you can have Brian afterwards and hopefully that's

  111. enough it's enough for me Brian all right let's just jump right into the

  112. text we're in a series in the book of Galatians sermon number two and we're

  113. gonna look at chapter 1 verses 10 to 24 finish out chapter 1 today so I'm gonna

  114. read right through the text of course our big idea for the whole sermon series

  115. is Christ lives in me but I'll tell you the big idea for today's text after we

  116. read you guys ready you guys are quiet you guys ready let's do this thing all

  117. right Galatians chapter 1 verses 10 to 24 for am I now seeking the approval of

    Galatians 1:10–24

  118. man or of God or am I trying to please man if I were still trying to please man

  119. I would not be a servant of Christ for I would have you know brothers that the

  120. gospel that was preached by me is not man's gospel for I did not receive it

  121. from any man nor was I taught it but I received it through a revelation of

  122. Jesus Christ for you have heard of my former life in Judaism how I persecuted

  123. the Church of God violently and tried to destroy it and I was advancing in my

  124. Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people so extremely zealous was I for

  125. the traditions of my father's but when he who had set me apart before I was

  126. born and who called me by his grace was pleased to reveal his son to me in order

  127. that I might preach him among the Gentiles I did not immediately consult

  128. with anyone nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me but

  129. I went away into Arabia and returned again to Damascus then after three years

  130. I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and remained with him 15 days but I saw

  131. none of the other Apostles except James the Lord's brother in what I am writing

  132. to you before God I do not lie then I went into the regions of Syria and

  133. Cilicia and I was still unknown in person to the churches of Judea that are

  134. in Christ they only were hearing it said he who used to persecute us is now

  135. preaching the faith he once tried to destroy and they glorified God because

  136. of me kind of an interesting text upon first read you're like okay what's this

  137. gonna be all about a lot about him traveling here and there not talking to

  138. people talking to other people what it what is going on here well let me catch

  139. you up in case you missed the first week of the Galatians study Paul's writing a

  140. letter to several churches in this whole region called Galatians there's several

  141. major cities at least four where he had gone on his first missionary journey and

  142. he planted these churches he'd shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with them

  143. that all of the Old Testament was fulfilled in Jesus Christ Messiah and

  144. that he came and lived a perfect life that he was killed as a criminal that he

  145. then was raised on the third day and that by believing in faith in Jesus

  146. Christ and this person and in his work we could be saved from our sins and we

  147. could have that great exchange of our sin for his perfection of what we

  148. deserved for what he deserved and that God makes that available to us through

  149. faith so this gospel well I call it the gospel of grace because that's one of

  150. Paul's favorite words and I'll tell you what it's my favorite word as well because

  151. grace means undeserved favor unmerited unearned blessings and so grace is what

  152. we all need to depend on in order to have a relationship with God because we

  153. don't deserve a relationship with God and we cannot earn a relationship with

  154. God and that's the beauty is that Jesus Christ can and did that's what we

  155. celebrate when we come together and sing songs of celebration it's what we

  156. pray about so what we think about we should be obsessed with the gospel of

  157. grace so Paul he began his letter by saying he was astonished that they had

  158. begun drifting off the foundation of grace so there was a problem in the

  159. Galatian churches where some folks some teachers self-proclaimed came in and

  160. they began to distort or even pervert the gospel of grace by saying grace is

  161. great and all but make sure you also do these works or you're not saved now

  162. that's not the gospel of grace that's not good news at all he said they're

  163. preaching to you another gospel which which there isn't another one because if

  164. it's dependent upon me to have any part of my salvation I'm gonna fail it can't

  165. be up to me because I'm so flawed and so frail it's got to be up to the grace

  166. of God and it's got to be me putting my faith in him so this other gospel was

  167. being preached among the Galatians we'll talk about some of the specifics but

  168. what they were doing is they were tight they were making it Christianity plus

  169. Judaism and so we'll call them the Judaizers throughout this study they

  170. were trying to kind of make Christianity more Jewish was this is the isn't the

  171. point at all so likely what has taken place is that in the Galatian churches

  172. there was probably some resistance there's probably some godly men some

  173. godly women who are hearing these guys pollute and distort the gospel and go

  174. and that's not what I remember Paul saying no no no actually Paul says

  175. something very different than that and so there was probably some resistance so

  176. what are these Judaizers do but resort to the classic strategy of character

  177. assassination well if these guys are gonna quote Paul we're just gonna have

  178. to make them think less of Paul we're gonna have to attack his character and

  179. his message and if we kill the messenger maybe we can kill the message

  180. of the gospel of grace so there's probably a few things based on what we

  181. kind of see in Galatians that that their strategies were to to again assassinate

  182. his character first of all hey Paul's just out for glory he's a glory hound

  183. you know it's all about himself so you really can't trust what he says that's

  184. one of the accusations they likely lobbied at him second is this Paul's

  185. just twisting things that he heard from other men from the other Apostles he he

  186. wasn't even with Jesus during his earthly ministry you can't trust what he

  187. said he's just run the coattails of the other Apostles and thirdly probably this

  188. one honestly this salvation by grace thing it's just too easy I mean he's

  189. trying to gain a following by telling people it's easy as you can't trust what

  190. Paul says so what Paul is trying to establish at the very beginning of his

  191. book here is that he got the gospel straight from the source straight from

  192. Jesus and that Jesus is the only person that he's aiming to please with his

  193. ministry and I think this is a very good message for all of us because he's

  194. answering the question am I a man pleaser or am I a God pleaser it's a

  195. question we must all ask ourselves regularly because it is so easy to slip

  196. into man-pleasing rather than God-pleasing as it's Father's Day well

  197. first of all do we have anybody that is old enough to remember when Saturday

  198. Night Live was funny okay okay does anyone remember deep thoughts by Jack

  199. Handy yes this is ridiculous deep thoughts by this guy and this is nature

  200. scene and his soothing voice comes over well one of my favorites is this one it

  201. takes a big man to cry but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man deep

  202. thoughts by Jack Handy and the segment was over and you're like what that's

  203. awful who says that you know well I bring that up because I think that the

  204. world has a very interesting idea of what it means to be a man about what

  205. manhood is and what it isn't but I think that the Bible actually has a different

  206. way to describe what manhood is and what it is not so all of my application

  207. points today are going to be about what a real man is like and obviously he's

  208. not a man pleaser but a God pleaser but don't worry ladies I'm just doing this

  209. for the guys to puff up their egos it applies to you too so just insert a real

  210. woman you're gonna be fine don't tell the guys all right here we go so let's

  211. kind of go deeper and figure out what Paul is trying to say to us first of

  212. all I want to point out this word he says am I now seeking the approval of

  213. man or of God why does he say now I think there's a couple of reasons Mark

  214. pointed out last week that verse 10 is what we call kind of a hinge verse we

  215. preached it last week at the end of our sermon and we're preaching it this week

  216. at the beginning of sermon because it swings both ways like one of those big

  217. kitchen doors that you know hinges that way so last week he was just referring

  218. to what he had said previously was he said something fairly politically

  219. incorrect definitely something that would not make him popular with other

  220. people he said that these people that are preaching this distorted gospel damn

  221. them to hell in those strong words to like the curse words of his day he said

  222. they should be damned to hell that's what they need to go they need to go to

  223. hell it's that egregious what they're doing to the gospel so he's just said

  224. this really inflammatory statement and again he's drilling these guys so think

  225. about that is that something that somebody was hoping to become popular

  226. would say no damn those guys to hell no it's a very that's not a way to make

  227. friends and influence people it's a way to make enemies and yet he doesn't care

  228. because he knows that he's right he knows that he means it's the right thing

  229. to say so he's kind of referring back with that now but he's also looking to

  230. hopefully his reputation carrying him forward he should he again these folks

  231. should know him he had planted these churches he was he was in their homes he

  232. was at the at their kids soccer games football I mean he was he was in their

  233. lives you know and he's hoping that his reputation as a man that doesn't seek

  234. popularity but seeks the Lord God will help him in other words I was never

  235. about man's approval when I was with you before do you think I'm that now so

  236. reputation I think is a really important thing and a real man Lord willing has a

  237. good reputation however a real man does not seek popularity and there's a

  238. difference there there's a huge difference it's much like the the word

  239. encouragement versus the word flattery I hope that I'm an encouraging person

  240. that's something I aim to be I try to get specific specific about those things

  241. and and I even reached out on Facebook and praised my dad for some specific

  242. things in his life and his fatherhood that I admire and he wrote back he's

  243. like I wish I wish I could live up to what you think of me and I said I think

  244. you've already lived up to it dad I'm not a flatterer because what a flatterer

  245. does is they make stuff up that they don't necessarily believe in order to

  246. gain popularity in order to gain something from that person an

  247. encourager is truthful and is real and sincere well again a reputation is

  248. something that Lord willing you can look at somebody's life a godly man a godly

  249. woman and you can see a pattern of behavior yeah they might mess up from

  250. time to time but the pattern of behavior I see I don't think this is what Paul's

  251. doing I don't think he's a man pleaser I think he's a god pleaser and hopefully

  252. they have specific examples from his life but he's not looking for popularity

  253. he's not looking for the most people to like him he's not flattering people he's

  254. not he's not false so real man doesn't seek popularity he also gives himself

  255. the sweet title in our opening verse he says if I were trying to please man I'll

  256. tell you what I definitely wouldn't be a servant of Christ this word servant is

  257. literally translated as bond slave again if you're if you're trying to be a man

  258. pleaser if you're trying to be popular with people would you take the role of

  259. slave no you would try to get influence you try to get position and power and

  260. money and fame and all those things but he says that's not even who I am at all

  261. I'm a bond slave now a bond slave in that day is a really interesting person

  262. this is not somebody whose debt made them go into slavery this is not

  263. somebody that was sold like property in that evil evil kind of slavery that we

  264. know it has existed for most of history no this is somebody that said man you

  265. are such a good person you're a landowner and you've got things to do at

  266. your house can I voluntarily live for you and work for you and serve you as my

  267. master and I know you're such a good master that you're gonna take care of my

  268. needs and have my best in mind I voluntarily submit myself under your

  269. authority he says I did that with Jesus Christ I didn't try to go up and say

  270. yeah Jesus you and I we're gonna do this together no I came under Jesus Christ

  271. and I submitted to him he says I'm a bond servant and a real man I'm telling

  272. you this is submissive as little as we think of the word submissive when we

  273. think of manhood we absolutely should because you're gonna submit to someone

  274. or something we're all we all have to there's no way we can go through life

  275. without submissive submitting but you have a choice in your life spiritually

  276. speaking and that is to either submit to pleasing man including just pleasing

  277. ourselves because I'm a man as well or we can submit to pleasing God and I

  278. promise you one is slavery like how could you ever do enough how can you

  279. ever be good enough how can you really have everybody like you it's impossible

  280. and one is freedom one is life one is sweet and wonderful submission and

  281. that's what that's what we see in this thought of a bond slave as we submit to

  282. God because he's just so easy to submit to you he's so wonderful he's such a

  283. good creator and father and we love him and so we submit this is what a real

  284. real man does in the following verses he's like listen the gospel was preached

  285. to me it's not man's gospel it's not man's gospel they didn't come from any

  286. man I didn't learn it from any man because it again that was kind of that

  287. second accusation that's probably being thrown at Paul he says no I got it from

  288. direct revelation of Jesus Christ he spoke to me now what would man's gospel

  289. look like well apparently what it looks like is this performance based thing is

  290. you better be good enough you better do these things you got to get circumcised

  291. you gotta you know follow the Holy Days you got to do the Sabbath just right you

  292. got it you got it you got it you gotta and that's no gospel at all that's not

  293. good news at all so it was about doing and the real gospel is about being Paul

  294. says no only God's revelation holds weight and I'm not I'm not here to talk

  295. about man's gospel and the cool thing is so so Paul had the gospel through a

  296. direct revelation revelation from Jesus Christ but you realize don't you that

  297. you also have direct revelation from Jesus Christ himself don't you stand up

  298. in there as a stand up and hold up what you're showing to everybody there it is

  299. there it is we have the full counsel of God's Word God's direct revelation we

  300. can know who he is we can know what pleases him and we can know how to be

  301. saved and that's their faith in Jesus Christ not by works now the works should

  302. follow but that's a whole different discussion we're not on that today today

  303. we're on our soteriology do you guys learn that fancy word and in DuPont

  304. yeah soteriology what's the gospel say about being saved it's gonna be really

  305. solid in that so here's the next thing we have the revelation of God so a real

  306. man refuses to compromise on the revelation of God we look at a God's

  307. Word we read it we study it we know it and we don't compromise which is not

  308. going to be popular today you probably already know this fact because the Bible

  309. calls sin some things that our friends and families wants to do are compelled

  310. to participate in and want us to rubber stamp as good

  311. and we can't we don't do that hatefully ever as our sin is just as gross as

  312. every other sin but we can't just affirm something that God says real man can't

  313. compromise we should do it lovingly lovingly leveling lovingly in

  314. relationship with grace we don't compromise and it wasn't always the case

  315. for Paul he's gonna share some of his story to show this sharp contrast

  316. between what he was before Christ because again we all before Christ

  317. miserable wretches dead there's no chance for us this he's like listen man

  318. you've heard of my former life but look at my highlighted words here my former

  319. life how I persecuted and I was advancing beyond my own age I was so

  320. zealous real men are not self-promoting but Paul realizes that's what he was it

  321. was all about himself in the old days it was all about proving that he was even

  322. better than the other guys his age yeah I was advancing far beyond those other

  323. guys I was the most zealous I was a good Jew I encourage you to read Paul's

  324. story in the book of Acts Acts chapter 7 is where he's first introduced and he's

    Acts 7 chapter mention

  325. standing by while Stephen the very first Christian martyr is killed in approval

  326. holding the jackets of the guys who are stoning him chapter 9 kind of goes into

  327. his conversion story when he met literally met Jesus Christ and Jesus

  328. Christ said from above from with the voice of God why are you persecuting me

  329. and he's like wait who my person who it's like it's me Jesus and he realizes

  330. oh my goodness I've been wrong this whole time Jesus is God I'm persecuting

  331. the Christians on what am I doing and there's this radical conversion to his

  332. life read it in Acts chapter 9 and if you want to in chapter 22 and 26 he kind

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  333. of recounts it again and you get a few more details so do some of that study on

  334. your own but praise God it all changed for Paul instead of being self-promoting

  335. it says but but when God oh my goodness but when God like these are amazing

  336. statements when we get to these kinds of butts the subject of the verb changes

  337. now to God sets Paul apart God calls him by his grace God was pleased to reveal

  338. his son to him God was the one who called Paul to preach the gospel of

  339. grace to the Gentiles and so Paul is just fixated on and in love with both

  340. the sovereignty of God and the grace of God and I'd say that's what all real men

  341. do we bow to the sovereignty of God for Paul he confesses been the one who set

  342. me apart before I was born that's how sovereign God is and he knew I would be

  343. persecuting he knew I would be jailing he knew I would be beating and yes even

  344. killing Christians and yet God God knew my story and he chose me before I was

  345. even born and Paul just loves that and he's also just obsessed with the concept

  346. of grace that God called him in grace again he did nothing to deserve it he

  347. did the exact opposite of deserving it and yet God loved him enough and called

  348. him so we should be obsessed with and fixate on and worship the grace of God

  349. with every breath that we have we think we can't take any credit just as Paul

  350. can't take any credit but God was pleased to reveal his son to you and we

  351. should praise him for it Paul was saved by God and he was also

  352. saved for God's mission okay he says he was saved in order that he could preach

  353. him among the Gentiles that was that was his specific call as most of the

  354. other Apostles they were preaching the gospel to Jews who already had kind of a

  355. background information of there was a Messiah coming and what that Messiah

  356. would look like and all these kinds of things some of God's law they had a

  357. little bit of background Paul's going out and he's been called by Jesus to

  358. speak to everybody else that didn't have all that knowledge and all that

  359. understanding realizing they could be grafted in and that they could be saved

  360. as well it's not just for the Jewish nation and the thing is the real man

  361. devotes himself to God's mission even today you have a calling I have a

  362. calling when Jesus left earth he gave the Great Commission he said go and make

  363. disciples of all nations baptizing them in in the name of the Father and of the

  364. Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey all that I've commanded and

  365. I'm with you always even to the end of the age Jesus gave every believer a

  366. mission field too and it's unique because it's your sphere of influence

  367. your family and your neighborhood in your workplace in your school they're

  368. not my family I don't know those people they won't listen to me why would they

  369. they listen to you and God has called you to them and so we realize that we go

  370. okay my whole life is a little bit different now yeah golf is fun but I'm

  371. golfing this afternoon what am I gonna be doing for the kingdom I hope I get

  372. paired with somebody regular Kevin hopes he doesn't get paired with somebody he

  373. doesn't know I'd really like to just be with my friends so that when I shank the

  374. ball I'm less embarrassed okay but but but Christian Kevin gets paired with a

  375. couple two days ago and Christian Kevin gets to share Jesus with him invite him

  376. to church and that's it's a whole new mission for me it's a whole different

  377. way of looking at life that's just one example again he says he hammers on this

  378. point I didn't go try to get everybody else's approval of whether I got the

  379. message right because I knew I got it straight from Jesus so I didn't need the

  380. approval of the other Apostles that's not what matters I again that's what

  381. the false teachers were trying to say about him so he didn't he didn't say I

  382. need to spend time getting to know other men and make sure I'm teaching the same

  383. thing as then he said no I need to know the source and a real man's most

  384. important relationship is with God a man's most important relationship is

  385. with God I got to perform a wedding yesterday for a special day for Ethan

  386. who go to the Lacey campus and just a great couple it was on a lake it's

  387. somebody's piece of property and perfect weather it was such a wonderful time but

  388. one of the things I tried to hammer home with them is that that a cord of three

  389. strands is not easily broken it's this cord of three strands that your

  390. relationship has got to have God at the center and we think man oh well if if my

  391. wife isn't my whole world then that she's gonna get less of me if I go

  392. towards God it's like no it's more like a triangle and as you both go up towards

  393. God you're getting closer together at the same time and your marriage is

  394. richer and more special you as a father as a mother you're getting closer to

  395. your children and you're being a better parent every relationship in life

  396. improves when he's the number one but we can't make idols of good things like our

  397. marriage or kids and instead neglect God look how he describes his time in

  398. Arabia which is where he said he went he went there for three years now we have

  399. to kind of imagine and piece together from his different books from the book

  400. of Acts and all that kind of stuff what this time was like but what I believe it

  401. was like is that this was sort of a compensation for Paul missing out on the

  402. ministry of Jesus when you know in person because the other apostles they

  403. were his disciples and they got how many years three years doing ministry with

  404. Jesus and Paul gets what three years in Arabia and so he's in prayer he's in

  405. meditation he's got the scriptures and he's starting he's got new spiritual eyes

  406. on through Holy Spirit and he can see the Old Testament go oh my word that's

  407. Jesus oh that's pointed Jesus oh my goodness this and everything's new and

  408. everything's great and so he's just reveling in the gospel of grace he's

  409. hearing from Jesus so Paul asserts that Jesus is a direct mentor and the voice

  410. of Jesus spoke to him so there's no middleman that the message didn't get

  411. muddled and a real man spends time with Jesus period make time for Jesus if you

  412. don't spend time with your wife you're not gonna have a very good marriage you

  413. don't spend time with your kids you're not gonna have a very good influence on

  414. their life you don't spend time with Jesus you're sure not gonna give him

  415. much lordship in your life much control and you're gonna suffer you will not

  416. regret spending as much time as possible with Jesus and then we got these

  417. interesting statements in verse 19 he's like okay I did go to Jerusalem once I

  418. know somebody's gonna accuse me oh you went to Jerusalem you did see the

  419. Apostles I know you did he said it was a visit I visited with Cephas for about

  420. 15 days I don't think I saw any other disciple oh yeah except for James the

  421. brother Jesus I saw him and then he in the parentheses that's kind of the the

  422. Greek version of swearing yourself in in court it's court speak do you need to go

  423. Jeremy you know promise to tell the truth the whole truth not the truth but

  424. I do it's that kind of statement I and what I'm writing to you I do not lie

  425. he's pledging it here so then he goes with this he says when I was in the

  426. regions of Syria and Cilicia or I'm sorry when I was in Jerusalem nobody

  427. knew who I was I'm not known there because again he's continuing to

  428. understore this the fact that he's not seeking man's approval he's not in a

  429. popularity contest where he's hoping that all the Jews are like oh that's

  430. Paul he's our guy he's our guy he says I was unknown in Judea but guess who was

  431. known they glorified God because of me they heard the story what God did in my

  432. life and they glorified God so it wasn't about me being known it was about God

  433. being known and really that's what life is all about a real man realizes his

  434. whole life is about giving God glory and pointing people to him giving him

  435. attention giving him praise it's putting a spotlight on everything that

  436. God does and everything that he can do he's the one that makes death in the

  437. life he's the one that did that for Paul he did it for me and so I want to spend

  438. the rest of my life highlighting the work of God and not the work of Kevin

  439. when God gets the glory the universe is right friends the things are just right

  440. that's the way it's supposed to be and I definitely want God to be glorified

  441. because of me in my life this is the type of sermon that as I meditated on it

  442. all week long and think about preaching it dozens and dozens and dozens of times

  443. as I think of am I a man pleaser a God pleaser Holy Spirit just like points out

  444. something okay I'm a man pleaser there aren't I 30 minutes goes by I'm in

  445. another situation and just over and over and over and over God's just

  446. convicting me and convicting me and convicting me and so even though this is

  447. kind of the part of the sermon where we're normally you know we would we

  448. would give you a few examples of how you can apply this to your life and and try

  449. to challenge you to think through those things I want to do something just a

  450. little bit different I want you to have a window into what my last week has been

  451. like I want you to write and in Expo Inc or or a Sharpie put them on notepads

  452. and put them all over your house and on your car am I a God pleaser I'm a man

  453. pleaser do something to bring your attention back to this concept over and

  454. over and over maybe you pray for every meal and so part of your prayer is Lord

  455. reveal to me what where I'm being in a man pleaser reveal to me I need to see

  456. it give him permission the Bible promises will be pray a prayer

  457. according to his will he will answer it and it is according to his will for us

  458. to examine this in our hearts so pray today try to pray every day this week

  459. God reveal it to me because there's way too many examples of where it could be

  460. from personal experience and conviction Lord reveal to us we we give you

  461. permission we bow our knee and submission to you and we want

  462. desperately to live our lives as God pleasers so we we beg you to reveal

  463. those areas and give us the courage and the strength to the power of Holy Spirit

  464. to to vanquish those things to repent of them as sin and to come to you and have

  465. you be the only one that we worship and the only one that we're trying to please

  466. we love you and we thank you that your word is so penetrating and so we're just

  467. we're ready for a week of growth all for your glory all for your attention we

  468. love you so much in the name of Jesus we pray the communion tables will be ready

  469. for you guys if you'd like to take communion while we sing a couple more

  470. songs and kind of respond to what God's doing in our hearts just encourage you

  471. to go by yourself a family member if you're a believer in Jesus Christ you're

  472. invited you don't have to be a member of our church or any specific church just

  473. just a member of God's family not everybody takes communion every week

  474. either so if you don't go nobody's gonna think you're weird so let's worship

  475. Jesus again let's give him permission and expect that he's gonna answer that

  476. prayer reveal things to us

  477. he who was before there was line walked across the pages of time he who made it

  478. be behold him he who heard humanity's cry left his throne to wake as a child

  479. he became like the least of us behold him Jesus son of God

  480. my sigh the lamb the roaring oh

  481. who died with sins and saints healed the blind the lost and the lame even now he is in our midst

  482. behold him he who chose a criminal's end bared no blood to settle our debt

  483. Mary death as he rose to the light behold him Jesus son of God Messiah the lamb the roaring lion

  484. oh be still and behold him Jesus Alpha and Omega our God the risen Savior oh be still and behold him

  485. holy holy holy is the Lord God almighty worthy worthy worthy to receive

  486. oh praise holy holy holy is the Lord God almighty worthy worthy worthy to receive

  487. oh praise holy holy holy is the Lord God almighty worthy worthy worthy to receive

  488. praise let's sing Jesus

  489. Jesus son of God Messiah the lamb the roaring lion oh be still and behold him Jesus Alpha and Omega

  490. our God the risen Savior oh be still and behold him

  491. behold him

  492. so

  493. well I've heard a thousand stories of what they think your life but I've heard the tender whisper

  494. of love in the dead of night and you tell me that you're pleased and that I'm never alone

  495. you're good good fun it's who you are it's who you are it's who you are and I'm loved by you

  496. it's who I am it's who I am it's who I am

  497. and I've seen many searching for answers far and wide but I know

  498. we're all searching for answers only you provide because you know just what we need before we

  499. say a word you're a good good father it's who you are it's who you are

  500. it's who you are and I'm loved by you it's who I am it's who I am

  588. as the school district refinishes this floor and everything

  589. and so if you could help us today

  591. that would be fantastic

  592. and we'll be there for the four weeks

  608. I hear you softly speaking

  609. secrets dark and close

  610. words that softly linger

  611. with sweet repose

  612. and I will never leave you

  615. for you to turn around

  671. as the deer pass over the waters

  672. Clothed alone in my powerless maze

  673. I stand on the edge of the abyss

  674. look at the sky and shake my face

  675. what am I gonna do if you don't even exist

  676. I place my hand in the handle

  677. cause I don't wanna go back to where I'm from

  678. I place my hand in the handle

  679. cause I don't wanna go back to where I'm from

  680. even though my faith is so small

  681. a distant echo when I fall

  682. but I am saved, I'm yours today

  683. I won't go back to my old ways

  684. so I'll come on over

  685. so I'll come on over

  686. so I'll come on over

  687. so I'll come on over

  688. I place my hand in the handle

  689. cause I don't wanna go back

  690. I place my hand in the handle

  691. cause I don't wanna go back to where I'm from

  692. I place my hand in the handle

  693. cause I don't wanna go back to where I'm from

  694. I place my hand in the handle

  695. cause I don't wanna go back to where I'm from
