  1. our title of the message today uh is a

  2. question and it is give what to lah who

  3. can you guys say it just like that with

  4. me here's the title of the sermon give

  5. what to lah who okay good because some

  6. of you are think you've heard that name

  7. you've heard it two or three times in

  8. this worship service some of you are

  9. brand new to us and you're saying who's

  10. this lady lot that we're giving all this

  11. money the national goal is like $200

  12. million so um who's this lady that we're

  13. going to give $200 million to well um

  14. we're not giving it to lahti we're

  15. giving it to the Lord but as we give it

  16. to the Lord we're going to see why we

  17. mention this now every Christmas um many

  18. churches especially southern baptist

  19. churches rightly take some time to

  20. really think and to talk about

  21. missions you say well Pastor why do we

  22. do that why don't we just talk about the

  23. baby born in the manger why don't we

  24. just talk about the Angels why don't we

  25. just talk about all of the other things

  26. that seem to be part of the Christmas

  27. story well let me tell you that when we

  28. remind

  29. ourselves of the issue of Missions at

  30. Christmas we are talking

  31. most about the meaning of

  32. Christmas you really need to make this

  33. connection right now in your mind if

  34. you've never made

  35. it Jesus was the first First

  36. Missionary he came on a

  37. mission does anybody remember the little

  38. verse that tells us what his mission was

  39. it says the son of man came to what to

  40. seek and to save the Lost let's say that

  41. together the son of man came to seek and

  42. to save that which was

  43. lost so this this is the reason he was

  44. born this is the reason we just sang

  45. about it this this babe who is this babe

  46. that is sleeping who is this babe as we

  47. think about this in humility after 400

  48. years of Silence he finally

  49. comes and he's born and the whole

  50. world's trying to kind of figure this

  51. out and what we eventually see is that

  52. this baby is going to be pierced with

  53. nails and a spear this baby is going to

  54. die on a cruel Roman cross lifted up

  55. cursed and that curse that he takes into

  56. himself is for our sin so he is the

  57. sacrifice given by God the second person

  58. of the Trinity God himself coming to

  59. save us from our sin so there is a

  60. reason to go into a Central Asian PR

  61. prison and give blankets to the people

  62. who would call themselves enemies of our

  63. own nationality there's a reason to do

  64. that in the name of Jesus because Jesus

  65. came for them too and Jesus came for the

  66. people across Asia and he came for the

  67. people across South America and he came

  68. for the people across

  69. America and so we we are doing the

  70. Christmas

  71. thing when we look at missions because

  72. Jesus was the first and great missionary

  73. so um when we talk about missions when

  74. we talk about that it's there's a few

  75. things that we want to consider number

  76. one one of the things that you ought to

  77. be asking whenever we hear about this

  78. whenever we talk about this is what is

  79. God calling me to do and for the most

  80. important one on that I think in my

  81. opinion is am I joining him am I

  82. going am I too a

  83. missionary you say well Pastor you

  84. really are getting at the money right I

  85. mean it's about how much you're going to

  86. give to support missions right and I

  87. would say you know God doesn't really

  88. need your

  89. money God has the cattle on a thousand

  90. hills um most of the time when it's the

  91. issue of money it's it's not because God

  92. doesn't have enough I I remember when we

  93. were in Spain we were going um to go to

  94. another church about 2 hours from our

  95. house one time and we were on the pay

  96. what do they call it a payoff

  97. uh like a a Turnpike where you had to

  98. pay right so we're going down to jalter

  99. for Easter Sunday and we get down there

  100. and there's a toll booth and the the

  101. thing was usually like

  102. €7 and it was 14 it was double and I

  103. said to the guy why is the toll double

  104. this is Easter weekend and he said God

  105. needs the money

  106. I don't know why I said that but I just

  107. thought to myself and he was being funny

  108. but God doesn't need the

  109. money God God has all the money he needs

  110. but you know what it's not so much that

  111. God needs it it's so much as that we

  112. need to give

  113. it our hearts need to give our hearts

  114. need to sacrifice our hearts need to be

  115. giving to you know the wise men Came To

  116. Worship and what did they do they

  117. brought gifts of worship gifts listen

  118. of sacrifice gold frankincense and my

  119. precious things now there were symbols

  120. behind that gold because he was a king

  121. frankincense because he deserved worship

  122. myr because he was going to

  123. die and so these precious gifts that

  124. they brought we see coming to worship

  125. throughout the Bible means coming to

  126. sacrifice of ourselves God calls us to

  127. that so let's look and let's see a

  128. little bit about missions this morning

  129. morning and about how we support this

  130. there's a there's a lady there um that

  131. we're going to look at lah Moon born in

  132. 1840 and Virginia and dies in Co Japan

  133. in

  134. 1912 um being a missionary to China she

  135. was on her way home starving to death um

  136. and very old and very sick and uh she

  137. died on Christmas Eve in 1912 but so our

  138. text this morning I want us to briefly

  139. look at it here this is such a beautiful

  140. little letter and I want us to see the

  141. background notice this under setting in

  142. background of third John number one John

  143. is a disciple of Jesus um John a

  144. disciple of Jesus is the writer of this

  145. letter and he is also called The Elder

  146. now what's kind of weird about this is

  147. that Jesus uh Jesus selected 12

  148. disciples and of the 12 disciples the

  149. youngest one was John and he was also

  150. one of the ones he was Peter James and

  151. John the three cord the ones that were

  152. always with Jesus John was the

  153. youngest and so when we come to the time

  154. for this letter to be written all the

  155. other Apostles have been killed by now

  156. so this is late in his life he is he's

  157. living he has lived in in what is turkey

  158. where the paing used to live and the

  159. churches they all across turkey are

  160. there he is exiled to an island of

  161. patmas he is dying on an island in Exile

  162. um kind of in prison on an island island

  163. out in the Mediterranean and the Holy

  164. Spirit inspires him to write letters and

  165. the Book of Revelation so notice this um

  166. earlier he had written the Gospel of

  167. John so this is also the John who wrote

  168. the Gospel of John and Revelation number

  169. three these little letters first second

  170. and third John were likely sent together

  171. they were likely sent together first

  172. John was a sermon to the churches in

  173. what is now

  174. Turkey um second John was a letter to

  175. one of those particular churches in the

  176. third John put a big circle around the

  177. third John here on that bullet point

  178. this is the one we're looking at this

  179. morning was personal correspondence to a

  180. man named gas and um number four

  181. apparently gas was helping traveling

  182. missionaries who were passing through

  183. their area of Asia or Western turkey

  184. turkey is in an interesting place is

  185. people pass through there from further

  186. east going to West toward Europe and so

  187. turkey is kind of a Transit ground we

  188. even heard that earlier from um Scott

  189. talking about all the immigrants coming

  190. through turkey and Eastern Europe um

  191. that are that are headed um over into

  192. Europe and even sometimes on their way

  193. to here to our country but it's a it's a

  194. Transit place and and we see guas had

  195. been supporting those missionaries so

  196. let's read the text I want you to see

  197. this um I discovered this several years

  198. ago I'd never thought about it as a

  199. missionary text and um I I think it's

  200. really good for us to become familiar

  201. and think about this so prominently in

  202. the New Testament and a challenge to us

  203. and an encouragement to us so this is

  204. third John in its verses 5 6 7 and 8

  205. there is no chapter because third John

  206. is so short it's only a few verses

  207. there's um I guess it's all chapter 1

  208. but look with me verse 5 look what it

  209. says

  210. beloved it is a faithful thing you do in

  211. all your efforts for these brothers

  212. strangers as they are he says you don't

  213. even know them verse six who testified

  214. to your love before the church so these

  215. people come through you help them and

  216. they are saying man you have really

  217. helped us look at the middle of verse 6

  218. you will do well to send them on their

  219. journey in a manner worthy of God verse

  220. 7 for they have gone out for the sake of

  221. the

  222. name which

  223. name the name that's above every name

  224. right the Lord Jesus accepting nothing

  225. from the Gentiles so from those who

  226. weren't religious those who weren't

  227. Believers they're they're not going and

  228. asking people to pay them them as they

  229. are there to share the gospel with them

  230. they're coming and they're even going to

  231. the Gentiles they're going to other Jews

  232. that are across the ancient world and

  233. they're going not asking for anything

  234. but going to share with those who've

  235. never heard the gospel and here we see

  236. part of the church like us being so told

  237. send them so they can go and not have to

  238. ask anything look at number eight verse

  239. eight therefore we ought to support

  240. people like these that we may be fellow

  241. workers for the truth it just doesn't

  242. get any pler than that do you see that

  243. let's read verse eight out loud together

  244. are you there let's read verse eight

  245. here we go therefore we ought to support

  246. people like these that we may be fellow

  247. workers for the truth fellow workers for

  248. what the truth and what is the truth a

  249. savior has died a savior has died and he

  250. will save you from your sins he'll take

  251. you from sin and death to righteousness

  252. and eternal life he will give you his

  253. righteousness the righteousness you

  254. don't have he will impute it upon you he

  255. will press it upon you all by

  256. faith and so this is the amazing

  257. salvation of God this is the truth so

  258. notice this let's break down these few

  259. verses that are here first of all in

  260. verse 5 and in verse 8 it's saying here

  261. number one supporting missionaries is a

  262. fill it in a really good thing to do

  263. it's a really good thing to do it's very

  264. plain it's very simple look at verse 5

  265. beloved it's a what what does it say

  266. there a faithful thing you do in all

  267. your efforts for these brothers look at

  268. verse eight therefore we ought to

  269. support these that we may be fellow

  270. workers so it's a really good thing to

  271. do well what do we do for these

  272. missionaries letter

  273. fill it in we care for them we care for

  274. them if we are sending out missionaries

  275. we ought to care for them I can tell you

  276. that one of the reasons I am so thankful

  277. to have an organization like the one

  278. that we all support all 46,000 southern

  279. baptist churches

  280. support um the IMB the the IMB is very

  281. careful to say if we're going to send

  282. these people out let's take good care of

  283. them because some people they don't have

  284. that support and they go out there and

  285. let me tell you that Marcy and I were on

  286. the field for a long time and we saw um

  287. family after family that they they had a

  288. lot of struggles because they just

  289. didn't have the support that we had we

  290. saw people that would be in the middle

  291. of having in a really important project

  292. or a really important year and kind of

  293. run out of money and so you know what

  294. they had to do they had to turn around

  295. go back back to the United States and

  296. either go back and stay back or they had

  297. to go back and say and go around and

  298. talk to churches and talk to people and

  299. say hey could you support us so they

  300. would have to stop to raise support our

  301. missionaries listen to this our

  302. missionaries don't have to do that

  303. because all these 46,000 southern

  304. baptist churches and all of the people

  305. just like you all of us give we take

  306. good care of them let me tell you that

  307. before Marcy and I went we were young in

  308. our early 30s and they said wow um

  309. they're looking at all our medical

  310. records we're not we're not sending you

  311. to Africa sick we need to make sure

  312. you're well so the IMB had a very

  313. rigorous medical approval and so we're

  314. sitting there and they said wow your

  315. grandparents had on one side had colon

  316. cancer your grandparents on the other

  317. side had colon

  318. cancer you know we need to check you and

  319. I'm like no I'm 32 years old

  320. you know they did a colonoscopy on me

  321. and they removed six

  322. Pops that they said two of these were

  323. very

  324. significant the IMB saved my

  325. life with that that could have gone for

  326. years undetected and had been too late

  327. and we all know that because of members

  328. in our

  329. church yes I've had that joy for four or

  330. five times um but I'm thankful that the

  331. organization that you support cares for

  332. missionaries there were times when um we

  333. we would be on the field and a partner

  334. from another organization the engine in

  335. there I remember one particular time the

  336. engine blew in their

  337. truck and they they couldn't get around

  338. and they didn't have the money to

  339. replace the engine and so you know what

  340. we did I called up my friends and London

  341. who were my supervisors and I said we

  342. really need this guy's help he's very

  343. good he doesn't have the money to

  344. replace the truck the the engine and

  345. they said well how much can we get it

  346. for and I told them how much we can get

  347. it for and we hauled that thing over to

  348. the capital of the country we were in

  349. and the IMB paid for a new engine in

  350. another person's

  351. truck because we are cared for so what

  352. should we do we should care for them

  353. well we should care for them letter B we

  354. should pray for them we should pray for

  355. them we see that throughout the New

  356. Testament when you're sending people out

  357. you pray for them you pray for their

  358. work Paul says pray that the Lord would

  359. open a door that we'd be able to share

  360. the mystery of the gospel Paul over and

  361. over again writes in the New Testament

  362. because of your prayers God has worked

  363. and answered in our lives see we're in

  364. this thing together so we don't let the

  365. pings and all of the others go out of

  366. sight and out of mind we remember them

  367. in prayer not only do we care for them

  368. and we pray for them but letter C we pay

  369. for them we pay for them we pay for

  370. their expenses we pay for their needs we

  371. pay them a salary we and that's part of

  372. what we see here we we see that they are

  373. generously called to support

  374. them um not just giving engines and

  375. accommodations like that but supporting

  376. what they need in order to live um so

  377. that they can go on in their work um so

  378. it's a really good thing to do to care

  379. pray and pay um for our missionaries I

  380. unabashedly invite you to participate in

  381. that because I know you will be blessed

  382. number two um we look in Vice in verse

  383. two excuse me number two sometimes we

  384. know them and sometimes we do not

  385. sometimes you will know the missionaries

  386. that you're supporting but most of the

  387. time you will not know them um look up

  388. there in verse 5 look what it says

  389. beloved it's a faithful thing that you

  390. do in all your efforts for these

  391. brothers underline that up there

  392. strangers as they

  393. are that is a now some of you are

  394. turning over the page don't do that look

  395. at this strangers as they are just

  396. because you don't know by God's grace we

  397. we have a good good organization and

  398. that you don't have to know every single

  399. one of them in order to give that's one

  400. of the reasons we believe in the IMB is

  401. that there's a lot of

  402. accountability and there's a lot of care

  403. given into who we send out and as they

  404. are unknown to us they're not unknown to

  405. all look at the next part here yes you

  406. can turn the page okay let's look don't

  407. want you to miss the point we're making

  408. number

  409. three we should also support them

  410. generously

  411. generously look at verse six um

  412. strangers as they are who testified to

  413. your love before the church look in the

  414. middle of verse six you do well to send

  415. them on their journey and then what does

  416. it say in a manner worthy of God you

  417. know what this is

  418. saying

  419. God is worth your

  420. sacrifice God is worth worth you looking

  421. at your gift of worship in it being

  422. significant um how generous has God been

  423. to you he's given his son Jesus Christ

  424. to pay for your millions of sins he's

  425. promised you eternal life he's promised

  426. you total acceptance he's promised you a

  427. complete and clean slate he's promised

  428. you eternity with him and he's even said

  429. while you're on this Earth while you may

  430. have troubles and you may have

  431. difficulties I'll still be with you I'll

  432. give you a peace that surpasses all

  433. human comprehension when the storms of

  434. life rock your boat and Shake Your World

  435. I will still be with you I'll let you

  436. know that I'm with you I will grow your

  437. faith so you're ready to see me face to

  438. face that's what he's doing but he's

  439. saying I will be with you I will be with

  440. you in it all and I will care for you

  441. now the Lord doesn't just care for us

  442. practically everyone in this room is

  443. very very blessed especially in

  444. comparison to the other peoples of the

  445. world many of the people that Scott and

  446. Dawn minister to in Central Asia the

  447. ones that live out in the country sleep

  448. on a concrete slab with a mat in the

  449. cold many of them may have a little foam

  450. mattress that they sleep on on the

  451. floor

  452. um most of the world is far far far

  453. poorer than the poorest person in this

  454. room most of the world um does not have

  455. what we have in any and and really has

  456. almost no hope of getting

  457. it when you look at the billions of

  458. people that live in in very great

  459. difficulty we have been given so

  460. much um and when you kind of think about

  461. that what does that call us to do you

  462. see fill it in here our generosity

  463. should be

  464. great and our generosity should be

  465. genuine I mean it shouldn't be like well

  466. I'm going to give a lot but the Lord

  467. better be happy and these people I'm

  468. giving to you better they better really

  469. be

  470. thankful a general generous genuine

  471. spirit is just genuine saying I it's my

  472. privilege to give look at this our

  473. generosity should be

  474. glad you remember with me what the

  475. scripture says the lord loves a what a

  476. cheerful Giver now some of you when you

  477. give you I mean you you give

  478. begrudgingly I want to encourage you to

  479. mature out of that and just say Lord

  480. give me the joy to give I have hard time

  481. with that I'm worried about it or I I

  482. just I I don't like the preacher talking

  483. about money I wish you would leave us

  484. alone well if I wanted to be a bad

  485. pastor I could never mention finances

  486. but a good pastor is going to say to you

  487. what God has given you is very important

  488. indicator of your heart Jesus talked a

  489. lot about our hearts and our money and

  490. so look at this our generosity should be

  491. glad

  492. that um an old Pastor that kind of

  493. mentored me when I was planting um

  494. Crescent Beach Baptist Church this is oh

  495. my goodness I'm not going to say how

  496. many years ago um an old man named

  497. Armando silvario he was an Italian

  498. evangelist and he was part of our church

  499. he was in his 80s when I was there I was

  500. 25 and um we were there and he would say

  501. this all the time don't give till it

  502. hurts give till it feels

  503. good where you really feel that you're

  504. giving don't give to if you're stuck in

  505. giving till it hurts you're missing out

  506. give till it feels good give with

  507. gladness now look at this our generosity

  508. should be great the amount matters

  509. that's that's part of what we see here

  510. the amount

  511. matters um number two our generosity

  512. should be gen genuine uh the

  513. authenticity of our giving matters

  514. that's we we should be authentic in

  515. where we are in life and what we can

  516. give and then look at this our

  517. generosity should be glad um the

  518. attitude

  519. counts so amount authenticity and

  520. attitude count and the idea is not that

  521. we're all going to give the same thing

  522. it's not about equal gifts but it's

  523. about equal sacrifice that's what God

  524. intends for us

  525. um so there is just what someone may

  526. give in this room might be a tremendous

  527. sacrifice for this individual or this

  528. family and for others if you would judge

  529. your giving based upon that you would

  530. say well that's no problem at all

  531. because we all have different level the

  532. point is each person in their own heart

  533. not under compulsion but as the gladness

  534. of their heart to obey

  535. that is what we see the Lord Challen

  536. challenging us to do um to give and to

  537. give

  538. generously um and with gladness look at

  539. number four and we see this in verse 7

  540. we should support missionaries because

  541. we love Christ we should support

  542. missionaries because we love Christ look

  543. at verse 7 it says for they have gone

  544. out for the sake of the name because we

  545. love Jesus we give they've gone out

  546. they're they're likeminded with us they

  547. love the Lord we love the Lord and so

  548. because we love his name being

  549. proclaimed number five we should give we

  550. should support missionaries because it's

  551. good strategy it's very good strategy

  552. and we see that in verse 7 verse B it

  553. says they accept nothing from the

  554. Gentiles you see it would be a bad thing

  555. if we sent out Dawn and Scott and said

  556. hey God bless you you guys go over there

  557. and um hopefully you can go over there

  558. and the people that you're sharing the

  559. gospel with they'll support you cuz

  560. we're not going to I mean they ought to

  561. be glad for it anyway right well no

  562. that's not the way it works they don't

  563. even know to be glad for it they don't

  564. even know they need to hear something

  565. they don't even know that they need to

  566. consider the claims of Christ and the

  567. goodness of Christ they they just need

  568. somebody to show up and not ask anything

  569. of them and share the gospel with them

  570. now eventually those churches wind up

  571. becoming self-supporting because they're

  572. taught all of these principles they're

  573. taught to be generous too so they learn

  574. that we become self-supporting and we

  575. can eventually support our own Ministry

  576. and our own work in the life of the

  577. church we don't need somebody from the

  578. outside to do that Scott has already

  579. mentioned that but it is good strategy

  580. that we let them go now some of our

  581. missionaries go over and they get a job

  582. they'll be somewhere in the middle east

  583. or they'll be down in Argentina or

  584. they'll be somewhere in Asia and they

  585. will go and they will open a coffee shop

  586. um they will open up um some consulting

  587. firm they will open up some type of um

  588. support for microenterprises and they

  589. are in business legitimate business and

  590. they're there kind of supporting

  591. themselves but they're not asking the

  592. people that they're sharing the gospel

  593. with to support them they are there to

  594. share the good news that's called tent

  595. making so Paul was a tent maker and he

  596. discipled people but he made his own

  597. money as a Tent Maker so um we have IMB

  598. missionar that have roles like that

  599. where they partially support themselves

  600. through that but it is good strategy

  601. that they don't have to go and have to

  602. ask for funds number six we should

  603. support Ministries missionaries so we

  604. may fill it in join their work you

  605. become part of their work because you're

  606. helping pay for it look what it says

  607. there in verse eight therefore we ought

  608. to support people like these that we may

  609. be what fellow workers for the truth

  610. that is a really really important part

  611. of that well so who's this guy Moon

  612. we've talked a lot about it over the

  613. years um I would say this and you can

  614. this might be something interesting for

  615. you to

  616. know um L moon was a missionary for you

  617. know uh many many years in China she was

  618. uh look at this born in Virginia she

  619. rebelled against Christianity until she

  620. came to Christ during college

  621. in 1858 was that around the time of the

  622. Civil War um one of the first women in

  623. the South to receive a master's degree

  624. she sailed to China in 1873 supported by

  625. Southern Baptist Churches um at the time

  626. the foreign Mission board which was

  627. renamed to the international Mission

  628. board she spent 39 years teaching girls

  629. and women in shantong China about Christ

  630. and other cities too but she spent 39

  631. years teaching she wrote thousands of

  632. letters campaigning for Mission support

  633. for China now what does that mean she

  634. kept writing back to the United States

  635. saying

  636. hey we we need your support we need your

  637. help there's so many people here and

  638. they don't hear they don't know the

  639. gospel and for a long time they were not

  640. responding to the gospel they were

  641. closed to her and closed to foreigners

  642. the Chinese were extremely

  643. closed and so she was asking for prayer

  644. like we see in the Apostle Paul's

  645. letters so fill that in she she was

  646. saying please pray for us she was saying

  647. please give so that we can stay so she

  648. her letters were calling for finances

  649. and then she would say this please send

  650. people to help us we need more

  651. missionaries we need

  652. help do you

  653. know when she was doing those things and

  654. and writing those letters and calling on

  655. people to do those things uh she did

  656. that for decades upon decades she wrote

  657. letters we have boxes and boxes of her

  658. letters in Richmond

  659. Virginia um letters that she had written

  660. calling on people to support so when it

  661. came time to really evaluate whether she

  662. should stay on the field there were

  663. people who went to see her and they said

  664. you're

  665. dying you're starving to death um it's

  666. getting cold now and you're old and

  667. you've given away all your food she did

  668. she literally gave away the food that

  669. she would eat because there was a

  670. terrible famine in the area where she

  671. was and she was put on a ship headed

  672. back to America and the ship pulled into

  673. coob Japan Japan um and it pulled into

  674. coob Japan on Christmas Eve and she died

  675. on board that ship in the port of coob

  676. Japan on Christmas Eve

  677. 1912 um so when we think about that 112

  678. years ago 112 years ago she passed away

  679. well when it came time

  680. to

  681. write

  682. a the name of this offering to name this

  683. offering people were saying well what

  684. should we name our big offering they

  685. said well why not name it after the lady

  686. who kept calling upon us to give there's

  687. a quote here and guys if you can go to

  688. that quote that is there I want you to

  689. see what she wrote in December of 1887

  690. so this is a long time before she died

  691. but look what this quote says and it's

  692. right up there on the screen need it be

  693. said why the week before Christmas is

  694. chosen for this offering why why should

  695. we do it the week before Christmas look

  696. what she says is not the festive season

  697. when families and friends exchange gifts

  698. in memory of the gift laid on the altar

  699. of the world for the Redemption of the

  700. human race the most appropriate time to

  701. concentrate a portion from abounding

  702. riches and scant poverty to send forth

  703. the Good Tidings of great joy into all

  704. the Earth she said doesn't it make sense

  705. that we would do this at Christmas I

  706. mean Jesus came we celebrate his

  707. Incarnation at Christmas it just makes

  708. sense that we would do it at this time

  709. of

  710. year Well many others have died as a

  711. result of being on the mission field um

  712. many others have gone before us many

  713. others have laid down their lives it

  714. wasn't just a little lady from Virginia

  715. and I think you all know for those of

  716. you who are new to us we have these

  717. little cutouts of her this is literally

  718. how tall she was so if she was here with

  719. me right now um I you know nice nice to

  720. have you here I mean we have I think

  721. probably seveny olds that are about this

  722. high so but by God's design she was able

  723. to go and to minister to Chinese um

  724. Chinese especially then tended to be

  725. very short people um in the area where

  726. she was so she wasn't um uh very it

  727. wasn't very surprising to her um but I

  728. want you to see and hear a little bit

  729. about

  730. her her strategy I think we have just

  731. listen to this when she got there she

  732. realized people would not let her in to

  733. their homes she was a foreigner they

  734. were afraid or they were disinterested

  735. they wouldn't listen to her with her

  736. broken English and everything

  737. else and so you know what she did she

  738. started thinking

  739. hm I need a way in the

  740. door and she said I'm from

  741. Virginia and um I like to bake and I

  742. have cookie

  743. recipes and I'll adjust some of the

  744. ingredients here that I can get here and

  745. I'll start making

  746. cookies and so she started making

  747. cookies because she would pray and make

  748. cookies pray and make cookies pray and

  749. make cookies and you know what the doors

  750. started to

  751. open people started to open the doors of

  752. their house because she was The Cookie

  753. Lady literally

  754. true do you know that at Christmas time

  755. when we are baking cookies as Community

  756. groups and we're just simply in putting

  757. those all together exchanging all those

  758. cookies assembling them into bags and

  759. boxes and everything else do you know

  760. what we're trying to do we're simply

  761. trying to find an open door into the

  762. people of our life of our

  763. church um we put together a bunch in our

  764. community group and we took them to the

  765. people so The Cookie Lady was the lady

  766. that just continued to use the strategy

  767. of finding some common ground in a

  768. simple thing like the sweetness of

  769. cookies could lead to the sweetness of

  770. Christ and we saw that happen so when we

  771. challenge you to go to your neighbor

  772. South Florida is the worst people can be

  773. inside the house and uh they won't even

  774. open the door right and you're wondering

  775. why don't they open the door but

  776. sometimes when they see you standing

  777. there with a gift sometimes they'll do

  778. that we had that experience this week as

  779. Marcy and I were passing out um our bags

  780. of cookies here in this area we had a

  781. great time doing it had great

  782. conversations invited many people to

  783. come to the candlelight service um we

  784. had two or three people say I'll

  785. come um there was a young man um back

  786. here behind the church he said oh yeah

  787. one of my friends Aaron he goes to that

  788. church he prays and I said oh well

  789. that's good that that's

  790. good teenager said that he prays

  791. I'm like I'm glad he knows

  792. that um so when we are having the heart

  793. of taking the gospel and inviting people

  794. to come when we are learning in one of

  795. Stephen's classes or one of the other

  796. classes that we are learning to share

  797. the gospel when we are considering

  798. listen to this when we are considering

  799. is the Lord calling me to go

  800. overseas because God laid it on Scott

  801. and Dawn's heart somewhere along the

  802. way um in fact I was sitting somewhere

  803. right over here behind Pastor Jason when

  804. I started to sense that God was calling

  805. me to be a

  806. missionary and so God God may be calling

  807. you to go and it doesn't matter how

  808. young or old you are God may be opening

  809. that door for you so the call to action

  810. on this is number one that we would

  811. think of Christmas as

  812. Missions Number Two that we would think

  813. of Christmas as a time for us to give

  814. the gospel to other people that don't

  815. have access to it locally and globally

  816. number three that we would think about

  817. our involvement our giving our praying

  818. our

  819. going maybe a step of faith for you

  820. would be to come and talk with one of

  821. the pastors and say would you would you

  822. pray with me I I think that the Lord is

  823. leading me to be open to this and to

  824. pray about going so we would invite you

  825. to do that why give to the lmon

  826. Christmas offering fill these in your

  827. gift supports 3,300 missionaries um

  828. serving overseas that's pretty amazing

  829. number two your gift sends IB

  830. missionaries to the last Frontiers that

  831. means we don't go to the easy places we

  832. go to the hard places um we go to the

  833. places that other Mission organizations

  834. many of them can't um because we have a

  835. support structure that allow now

  836. sometimes there's other organizations

  837. that beat our pants off over some of

  838. those places I mean they're just doing

  839. they're going and blowing it's great but

  840. many times IMB folks are at some of the

  841. last Frontiers some of the hardest to

  842. reach

  843. places 100% of your gift to lmon

  844. Christmas offering goes overseas none of

  845. it stays in the United States all of it

  846. goes overseas Financial giving is an

  847. essential part of gospel work um we all

  848. get to be involved we partner as this

  849. verse says and this final one no notice

  850. this this is an appropriate way to

  851. celebrate Christ's

  852. birth God so loved the

  853. world that he what

  854. gave the wise men came bringing gifts

  855. David said I will not give to the Lord

  856. that which costs me

  857. nothing I want to challenge you to take

  858. a step of Faith this year and really

  859. give and to give generously at Christ's

  860. birth um and as we do that we will see

  861. God's Great message of the Gospel going

  862. around the world this is a very good and

  863. glorious thing for us to do so how do we

  864. support our folks overseas number one we

  865. pray number two we give and number three

  866. as lah calls us to we go we go pray give

  867. and go that's what we need to think of

  868. when we think of missions amen amen

  869. let's stand together as we pray
