  5. coming to give one to you If you're

  6. joining us online you can download this

  7. sermon outline from our church website

  8. and be able to follow along This morning

  9. we begin a new series It will be a brief

  10. series as we lead up to Easter And it's

  11. a series that has to do with the deep

  12. issues of our heart before God

  13. When we come before God the Bible tells

  14. us that our hearts are laid bare before

  15. him And so it is very very good that we

  16. would come to him and allow his word to

  17. speak to us What do you see in front of

  18. you right here what is that that's a

  19. waterfall right um there are waterfalls

  20. all over the world Um how many of you

  21. kind of like waterfalls do you like

  22. waterfalls i think almost everybody

  23. likes waterfalls right um this happens

  24. to be one of my favorite waterfalls in

  25. the world Not to be morbid but at one

  26. time when I had wrote out my last will

  27. and testament I had uh written out a a

  28. plan for when I was young uh if I was

  29. ever cremated um you could you could

  30. take my ashes to this place Um this has

  31. been a very special place since

  32. childhood Does anybody know the name of

  33. this waterfall

  34. this is Piska This is in Piska National

  35. Forest in North Carolina And it's called

  36. it's called Looking Glass Falls Um it's

  37. a beautiful place In fact that waterfall

  38. is six Oh I'm pointing up there Six

  39. stories high That's well over 60 ft high

  40. and it's a lot of water Everybody likes

  41. waterfalls How about this couple they

  42. just got married last year and uh here

  43. they are enjoying a waterfall If we were

  44. to look around at many different

  45. waterfalls some of you have favorite

  46. places Going back to Pisa National Falls

  47. you can see here the scale of it Um the

  48. water is super cold and I love cold

  49. water Does anybody like jumping in a

  50. cold stream no most people don't I do

  51. Marcy hates it Refuses Will not go Um I

  52. love it I enjoy it Um one of the reasons

  53. I like it is because as I get into that

  54. cold water and I swim over it's a very

  55. big pool that's actually there at the

  56. bottom of it And I climb up on those

  57. rocks where that water's coming down In

  58. fact it comes down with such force you

  59. cannot stand underneath it It hits you

  60. with such overwhelming force it feels

  61. like it'll split the scalp on top of

  62. your head You can only take it for a

  63. second or two and then you fall back

  64. into the pool and let the water carry

  65. you away as you hear the roar and

  66. experience experience the thrill of it

  67. I've been there in the fall and it's

  68. beautiful in the fall as well Other

  69. people think it's a great place In fact

  70. people have been married there and had

  71. pictures there But it's just all around

  72. a a place that reminds us of God's

  73. beauty and his creation Well this

  74. morning I want us to think about when I

  75. when I think about a

  76. waterfall I think about a flowing

  77. generosity an

  78. overwhelming

  79. generosity And this morning we want to

  80. begin a series that is

  81. entitled our generous God The fact that

  82. God is a generous God He doesn't give a

  83. little He gives a lot He gives the

  84. ultimate amount In fact look at the

  85. screen with me Uh the word generosity is

  86. an interesting word Notice what it says

  87. up there at the top It has to do with

  88. showing a readiness to give what

  89. more of something than

  90. is

  91. necessary or expected

  92. Generosity is giving more than is

  93. necessary or expected It's the idea of

  94. showing kindness towards others by

  95. giving in

  96. abundance I want you to think about this

  97. for me with me for a moment

  98. Have there been times in your

  99. life when

  100. someone was

  101. generous to

  102. you can you think

  103. back to a moment in your

  104. life when someone was generous to

  105. you most of us probably can I realize

  106. that there are many in this room that

  107. were not raised in

  108. gentle loving kind compassionate healthy

  109. environments I realize that there's some

  110. in this room that you're here kind of in

  111. spite of the past in a lot of ways and

  112. it was not that for you But me maybe

  113. even in the midst of that there were

  114. moments when someone was generous to you

  115. I I remember I had a grandfather and a

  116. grandmother in fact two grandfathers and

  117. grandmothers that that as a child they

  118. were always very generous to me They yes

  119. would sometimes give a tip or a or

  120. something and granddad would say this is

  121. for my grandmother would say this She

  122. she was from Georgia She said now Andy

  123. this is for you to go get a party Go get

  124. a pretty with that I don't know what

  125. that was I didn't know what a pretty was

  126. but I figured out eventually that meant

  127. go get whatever you want with that $

  128. five

  129. dollar As time goes on and the the

  130. stakes got higher there were times

  131. when there was there were people who in

  132. my life were

  133. generous And I remember sometimes

  134. thinking "Oh my wow I can't believe they

  135. did that."

  136. Have you ever had that

  137. experience

  138. god is a generous

  139. God He is generous towards

  140. us He's generous in ways that go beyond

  141. our

  142. imagination I just finished teaching

  143. starting point and we were looking at

  144. who is the person of

  145. Jesus Who is the person of Jesus

  146. who what makes him who he is And as we

  147. delved into the fact that he is

  148. eternally existent in the past and he's

  149. the creator of all

  150. things with the father and the spirit

  151. And we see that he in all of his glory

  152. of

  153. heaven would

  154. choose in obedience to the father and

  155. out of the sacrifice of his own heart

  156. would choose to become a baby And he

  157. would join us in a fallen world And he

  158. would live and walk among us adding

  159. humanity to his

  160. deity cloaking his

  161. glory so that we might learn of

  162. him How else would we know the heart of

  163. God if he did not join us how else would

  164. we know his grace and his mercy and his

  165. love if we did not see him

  166. lay down his life for us you see our

  167. God is a generous God And this morning I

  168. would love

  169. to look at what God's word says about

  170. his love We we talk a lot about his love

  171. And I want us to see this morning the

  172. title is really the picture here God's

  173. love means his

  174. generosity It is his love that brings

  175. about his generosity Notice these two

  176. key words here his love His love and

  177. generosity they go together And it's his

  178. love that brings about that It is the

  179. means of his generosity The Bible tells

  180. us "For God so

  181. loved the world that he gave." And so we

  182. see a God who's a God of generosity I

  183. want you to notice these passages of

  184. scripture and I want you to see them

  185. with me this morning Typically we would

  186. do an expository message Um this morning

  187. this message is a little bit more of a

  188. topical message going after a key

  189. reality from God's word about who he is

  190. and how does he act toward us who is he

  191. in his nature and why does he do with us

  192. what he does and so this morning notice

  193. with me some of these passages John 3:16

    John 3:16

  194. for God so loved the world Can you write

  195. up there just above that the motivation

  196. this was his

  197. motivation The motivation was love For

  198. God so loved the world that he did what

  199. he gave Can you circle the word

  200. gave he gave his only son that whoever

  201. believes in him would not perish but

  202. have eternal life Now this has often

  203. been considered the the nutshell verse

  204. of the entire Bible You can you can

  205. really capture a vast majority of the

  206. concept of the gospel in John 3:16 For

    John 3:16

  207. God so loved the world that he gave his

  208. only son that whoever believes in him

  209. would not perish There's the idea of sin

  210. The Bible tells us that sin when it

  211. brings when it comes forth it brings

  212. death That's perishing So those who

  213. believe in him and not themselves for

  214. their

  215. salvation would not perish but have what

  216. is it there eternal life This is

  217. generous Look at John 3:35 The father

    John 3:35

  218. loves the son and has what circle that

  219. word Given given all things into his

  220. hand This is a God that is generous

  221. within himself

  222. a God that is generous within the

  223. Trinity But notice here Ephesians 5 1

  224. and 2 Therefore be imitators of God as

  225. beloved children So we're to act like

  226. God We're to be like God Walk in love

  227. And then here's the example Walk in love

  228. as Christ loved us and what gave himself

  229. up for us Circle that word gave

  230. gave himself up for us a fragrant

  231. offering and

  232. sacrifice to

  233. God When we come to the table of the

  234. Lord we are seeing that this represents

  235. the fragrant offering to God the

  236. sacrifice to

  237. God the obedience of the son and the

  238. fulfillment of our faith that brings

  239. glory to God

  240. So notice this Ephesians 5:2 we see it

    Ephesians 5:2

  241. comes down into our human lives and our

  242. relationships with each other Husbands

  243. love your wives And then the example of

  244. ultimate love is what as Christ loved

  245. the church and there's that word again

  246. and gave himself up for her

  247. So it's not only that loving brings

  248. about giving but loving brings about

  249. ultimate giving In fact notice these in

  250. John 3:16 at the top He gave what his

    John 3:16

  251. only son In John 3:35 what does it say

    John 3:35

  252. there he He's given what all things You

  253. see it's

  254. generous And then look with this in

  255. Ephesians chapter 5 Christ loved us and

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  256. gave what

  257. himself He gave himself up for us That

  258. means lifted up on a cross Lifted up to

  259. become our sin and to take the ridicule

  260. of our

  261. sin for us And then we see this same

  262. idea He gave himself up for her in

  263. Ephesians 5 And then look at Galatians

    Galatians 2:20

  264. 2:20 Um perhaps one of the most

  265. important passages in the New Testament

  266. that helps us understand the gospel so

  267. clearly and especially on a Sunday when

  268. we are observing the Lord's supper This

  269. is so beautiful We see that Paul is

  270. calling the Galatian people the Galatian

  271. church to realize that we are to have

  272. the attitude of Christ He says "I have

  273. been crucified with Christ." Now he

  274. means that figuratively in in coming to

  275. death of himself and living to Christ

  276. Look what he says I have been crucified

  277. with Christ It's no longer I who live

  278. but Christ who lives in me And the life

  279. I now live in the flesh I live by faith

  280. in the son of God Look what it says Read

  281. it out loud together with me Who loved

  282. me and gave himself up for me

  283. So we see this association and and I

  284. could go to many other examples of this

  285. in the scripture and not only in the New

  286. Testament but also uh more elaborately

  287. in the Old

  288. Testament Love brings about

  289. generosity Love brings about self

  290. sacrifice

  291. And when we think of generosity we want

  292. to think of an

  293. overflowing

  294. abundance that we don't deserve and

  295. that's beyond even what we would say is

  296. necessary So central premise uh as we

  297. get going in this series I want us to

  298. see first and foremost that God's love

  299. means that God

  300. generously gives himself Fill that in

  301. God generously gives himself to others

  302. That's what he

  303. does Yes God is a jealous God Yes God

  304. will not share his glory um with other

  305. gods or other things to be worshiped God

  306. says "Worship me and me alone." But God

  307. in his goodness and in his

  308. love gives of

  309. himself And we can also see and fill

  310. this in God can give all because he made

  311. all and he owns all It's so important

  312. for us to recognize how amazing this is

  313. God can give all things because he made

  314. all things and he owns it Um notice with

  315. me number one here God is sovereign over

  316. all things He depends upon nothing He

  317. needs nothing He depends upon nothing

  318. Notice Psalm 90 and verse two Before the

  319. mountains were brought forth orever you

  320. had formed the earth and the world from

  321. everlasting to everlasting you are God

  322. So he is

  323. selfexistent before

  324. creation And then notice Revelation 4:11

    Revelation 4:11

  325. Worthy are you our o excuse me our Lord

  326. and God to receive glory and honor and

  327. power Look what it says Underline it For

  328. you what created all things and by your

  329. will they existed and were created So he

  330. created all things This means he owns

  331. all

  332. things I love Acts 17 24 and 25 Look

  333. what it says Um the God who made the

  334. world and everything in it being Lord of

  335. heaven and earth does not live in

  336. temples made by man Nor is he served by

  337. human hands as though he what he doesn't

  338. need

  339. anything since he

  340. himself circle it gives to all mankind

  341. life and breath Breath And what is the

  342. last word there everything Circle the

  343. word everything Look at that Meditate on

  344. that I know you're trying to turn over

  345. the page Just look at

  346. it I want you to meditate on

  347. that He's not a God that needs anything

  348. He gives

  349. himself and he gives mankind everything

  350. that we need He gives everything Number

  351. two I want you to

  352. notice God is owner of all things and he

  353. lacks

  354. nothing So he is truly the owner Um

  355. notice Job 41 God is responding to Job

  356. in chapters 38-41 revealing his utter

  357. God's utter sovereignty over all things

  358. And notice this who has first given to

  359. me that I should repay him You see

  360. nobody's given to God

  361. first Whatever is under the whole heaven

  362. is what

  363. mine God owns it

  364. all Psalm 50:es 10-12 For every beast of

  365. the forest is mine and the cattle on

  366. what a thousand hills I know all the

  367. birds of the hills and all that moves in

  368. the field is mine He owns all things He

  369. lacks

  370. nothing In 1 Corinthians 8:6 yet for us

    1 Corinthians 8:6

  371. there is one God the Father from whom

  372. are all things and for whom we exist So

  373. everything comes from God and we exist

  374. What does it say there top top of that

  375. line there and for whom we exist We

  376. exist for God Now the world is confused

  377. about that

  378. statement The world the average person

  379. in our world thinks that they exist for

  380. themselves or maybe they exist in more a

  381. pantheistic idea of all of the universe

  382. So kind of the the ideas in the

  383. theologies of Avatar or something like

  384. that that you know it's we're we're all

  385. one with nature and we have no listen

  386. all of nature and all of every person

  387. that has ever existed exists for the

  388. glory of God whether saved or

  389. unsaved All exists for his glory and for

  390. whom we exist He says "And one Lord

  391. Jesus Christ through whom all

  392. things whom are all things and through

  393. whom we exist We exist by him and for

  394. him." So he's the owner of all things

  395. There's nothing that he

  396. lacks And so that means that he is the

  397. one who can give all things Notice

  398. number three God is giver of all things

  399. We see this over and over again So some

  400. of you may be thinking "Oh great I've

  401. been wanting that new Bronco It's so

  402. cool It's so cute." And God gives all

  403. things So and he doesn't hold anything

  404. back So wow My ship has come in I come

  405. to God and he'll give me that new

  406. Bronco That's culture talking in you

  407. That's your sin nature That's your flesh

  408. talking When we set our eyes on the

  409. things of the world when we set our eyes

  410. on our career our future the things that

  411. I want maybe God will give me what I

  412. want I grew up in this place I sat here

  413. in these parts over here most of the

  414. time as a child growing up and so forth

  415. And my selfish little mind often

  416. interpreted life about what I might get

  417. It wasn't until God started to help me

  418. lift up my

  419. eyes from myself and from just what I

  420. want and from concerned about what I

  421. would have that I started to see oh no

  422. he has much better

  423. things than I can

  424. want as I come to know him You see he

  425. holds nothing back He gives good things

  426. Look at Acts

    Acts 17:2

  427. 17:2 The God who made the world and

  428. everything in it being Lord of heaven

  429. and earth does not live in temples made

  430. by man Here we see it again He nor is he

  431. served by human hands as if he needs

  432. anything And then look what it says

  433. Since he himself gives to look what it

  434. says all mankind life and breath in

  435. everything I've included that again

  436. because I want you to to see that he

  437. doesn't hold

  438. back He's a generous

  439. God Romans 11:35 and 36 Or who has given

    Romans 11:35

  440. a gift to him that he might be

  441. repaid for from him and through him and

  442. to him are what all things That means he

  443. owns it all Look what it says in verse

  444. 36 Let's read that out loud For from him

  445. and through him and to him are all

  446. things To him be glory forever

  447. Amen And so this is a

  448. God who not only owns it all because he

  449. made it all but he's a God who

  450. gives generously

  451. 2 Peter 1:3 "His divine power has

    2 Peter 1:3

  452. granted to us," circle it what all

  453. things Are you following along look at 2

    2 Peter 1:3

  454. Peter 1:3 His divine power has granted

  455. to us what all things that pertain to

  456. life and what

  457. godliness Though through the knowledge

  458. of him who called us to his own glory

  459. and excellence So as we come to Christ

  460. we see the things that pertain to life

  461. and

  462. godliness So this is why you need to

  463. grow in your knowledge of God This is

  464. why you need to grow in your knowledge

  465. of what's important to God This is why

  466. you need to grow in your knowledge of

  467. the things that as uh Aaron was praying

  468. just a moment ago he prayed about the

  469. issue of the fact that there's a bunch

  470. of stuff that's temporal That means it's

  471. going to it's temporary it's going to

  472. pass away versus the things that are

  473. eternal Now Satan wants to deceive you

  474. about all of those things He wants you

  475. to think that the important things are

  476. not important And he wants you to think

  477. that the unimportant things are very

  478. important And you can translate that out

  479. into every person's life in here

  480. the person that's young and got the

  481. world in front of them life in front of

  482. them and all of the hopes of that and

  483. the person who's lived a long time and

  484. most of their life is behind them and

  485. they're looking out He wants to reverse

  486. God's priority and God's value on the

  487. things that are in front of you

  488. And so what he's called us to do is to

  489. recognize that he has the power to give

  490. us the things that we really need

  491. pertaining to life and godliness So at

  492. the bottom of the page there notice that

  493. God's love and generosity it all comes

  494. from who he

  495. is his love that he he is a generous God

  496. and so he gives

  497. generously when we see this throughout

  498. the scripture and see across the board

  499. of many different characteristics we see

  500. this notice first John 4 7 and 8 beloved

  501. let us love one another for love is from

  502. God and whoever loves has been born of

  503. God and knows God anyone who does not

  504. love does not what

  505. No God And why read it out loud Because

  506. God is love Now just don't turn the page

  507. Just hang on Hang

  508. on Look at

  509. that God's love and

  510. generosity comes from who he is It's not

  511. just something he does

  512. Have you come to

  513. know the God of love who calls himself

  514. love the world is very confused about

  515. love The world has reduced love

  516. sometimes to just

  517. sexuality We use it in a lot of

  518. terminology

  519. The world is confused about what it

  520. really means to love some Well you know

  521. when you get the love of your life

  522. somebody who makes you

  523. happy Isn't that how we say

  524. that does that not fundamentally mean

  525. we're coming at it from the wrong

  526. direction well this person makes me

  527. happy so I love

  528. them Well let me guarantee you this God

  529. doesn't make you happy in your sin but

  530. he loves you anyway

  531. He loves you He loves you when you are

  532. unlovable When Marcy and I got married

  533. Marcy gave me as a wedding gift a book

  534. of

  535. letters from 40 men in my men and women

  536. in my life people that were mentors to

  537. me she had written to them after we got

  538. engaged and she said "I would like to

  539. give Andrew a gift um on our wedding day

  540. and I would like the gift to be a letter

  541. from you." And so I got this beautiful

  542. gift of all of these letters almost all

  543. of them handwritten some of them

  544. um written out And I remember one of one

  545. of my main mentors Tom Elliff he gave me

  546. several pieces of advice He knew and

  547. loved Marcy long before I had ever met

  548. her She had become a daughter to them

  549. And he and Jeanie Elf took them in took

  550. her into their home and loved her And so

  551. it was I had to pass quite a few tests

  552. with Tom Ellf about that Um it was kind

  553. of scary at moments but he came to love

  554. me and accept me

  555. eventually But he said a lot of things

  556. that were important And one of the

  557. things that he said to me was this What

  558. I've kind of just touched on about you

  559. and

  560. God He said,"Andrew Marcy will need your

  561. love the most when she is the least

  562. lovely When she's not at the top of her

  563. game when she's having a bad

  564. day when she's maybe not kind toward you

  565. when she maybe has wronged

  566. you when she is struggling within

  567. herself that's when she needs your love

  568. the most not the

  569. least And do you know that that's the

  570. kind of love that God has tom was

  571. calling me to love Marcy like God loves

  572. me While we were yet

  573. sinners Christ died for

  574. us And so we see the the nature of God

  575. and we see the nature of his love and we

  576. see the fact that he is this he is love

  577. and he is

  578. generous And so God freely gives We've

  579. read it over and over He freely gives

  580. all

  581. things This is an amazing God even to

  582. those who have not earned it So this is

  583. because God is love You may safely turn

  584. the page to the last

  585. page

  586. Love There are some different Greek

  587. words for love

  588. Agape aeros and fileo are two of the

  589. main are three of the main ones But

  590. aeros talks more about erotic love or

  591. sexual love File has to do with a a

  592. brotherly

  593. love But agape is described as God's

  594. love the way that God's love So when you

  595. read the New Testament in coin Greek you

  596. will see different words used for love

  597. And it's important for us to recognize

  598. that But this love is a selfless love

  599. This is a love that isn't loving you

  600. because it's good for him This is a love

  601. that is loving you with disregard for

  602. self And that's what we see in

  603. Christ This is so important for you to

  604. get in your life Young people listen to

  605. this Listen to this this morning It'll

  606. help you so much Point number one this

  607. first bullet point is God's love is an

  608. othersoriented

  609. love It's not a love that is

  610. self-oriented It's not that you love

  611. this person because they make you

  612. happy It's that you love this person

  613. because they need your

  614. love How about the next one god's love

  615. is a

  616. selfgiving love That's what we've just

  617. been reading We've been seeing this over

  618. and over again It says over and over in

  619. the passage that we read about the life

  620. of Christ he gave

  621. himself He gave himself

  622. up for you That's talking about the

  623. cross It's a

  624. selfgiving

  625. love God's love gives himself for what

  626. purpose to bless

  627. others to be a blessing When we talk

  628. about wanting the blessings of God there

  629. is no greater blessing that your heart

  630. first

  631. needs than the grace and forgiveness

  632. that is found through the cross of Jesus

  633. Christ That's the first blessing you

  634. need You don't need a nice home You

  635. don't need better transportation You

  636. don't need people all around you in your

  637. life that are going to be nicer What you

  638. need first and foremost is a right

  639. relationship with the one who created

  640. you your heavenly father And he gives to

  641. that freely to bless you in him Here's

  642. one of the most amazing ones as well

  643. There's many things we could say about

  644. God's love but God's love it says never

  645. changes As he never changes his love

  646. never changes

  647. Now I want you to notice this with me as

  648. we talk about his generosity in loving

  649. us in giving to us I want just to see

  650. this God's generosity in eternity past

  651. This is before creation before the

  652. universe existed in all things Now I

  653. don't think about that too long Smoke

  654. will start coming out of your ears I

  655. mean it's just a big concept of what

  656. what was everything like before well

  657. there was no everything Um we we see

  658. that there was a beginning and before

  659. that beginning was God And what we see

  660. in the scripture is this I wanted you to

  661. notice here that God's loving and

  662. generous nature is seen within the

  663. Trinity God perfectly satisfied within

  664. himself And by the way this is an

  665. important side point Um I remember

  666. hearing as a kid growing up sometimes as

  667. people were trying to explain God to me

  668. they they said "Well God was in eternity

  669. past before the world began and he was

  670. lonely and so he wanted companions and

  671. so he created the world." Friends that

  672. is

  673. false God was not

  674. lonely He simply determined that it

  675. would bring him greater in his great

  676. wisdom who would bring him greater glory

  677. in his great wisdom to create a

  678. universe and so that but there's God has

  679. lacked in nothing God has never needed

  680. anything but notice this in John 17:5

    John 17:5

  681. and now look what it says and now father

  682. this is the father the son go the son

  683. praying to God the father in this high

  684. priestly prayer and now father glorify

  685. me in your own presence with the glory

  686. that I had with you Underline

  687. it Before the world existed

  688. eternity

  689. passed Look at John 17:24 A few verses

    John 17:24

  690. later Jesus is praying "Father I desire

  691. that they also whom you have given to me

  692. may be with me where I am to see my

  693. glory that you have given me because you

  694. loved me before what

  695. the foundation of the

  696. world And so this is a God within

  697. himself And within eternity past is a

  698. generous

  699. God Within the Trinity we see the father

  700. giving to the son the son giving to the

  701. father And the same thing with the holy

  702. spirit We were just talking about this

  703. in starting point this morning As we

  704. look at the Holy Trinity we see perfect

  705. union We see perfect glorification of

  706. one to the other perfect

  707. harmony God is a relational God and he's

  708. made us Genesis says we are made in his

  709. image That means that you are like God

  710. in that you are a relational person

  711. And so we see that sin has come and

  712. poisoned our relationships with one

  713. another And sin has come and poisoned

  714. our relationship with God So God in his

  715. generous love comes to restore that

  716. perfect harmony through Jesus Christ

  717. So in perfect

  718. harmony God the son comes and adds

  719. humanity onto his deity and becomes a

  720. man He cloaks his

  721. glory He empties himself of holding on

  722. to the heavenly throne room and he

  723. enters

  724. into a dirty little

  725. stable as a baby

  726. How else would we know his

  727. humility he could say "I'm a humble

  728. God." But would we even understand what

  729. that means

  730. but in his

  731. humanity in his

  732. incarnation he takes on flesh joins us

  733. in our

  734. mess and then he goes even deeper into

  735. humility as he lays down his life to be

  736. crucified on a cross mocked and

  737. rejected by the people that he had

  738. chosen to show the world his love

  739. room Notice

  740. there that he has before the foundation

  741. of the world loved us Look at John 3:35

    John 3:35

  742. The father loves the son and has given

  743. all things into his

  744. hand and the son in perfect obedience

  745. would come and lay down his life So we

  746. see God's generosity in eternity past

  747. but we also see it in this filidin in

  748. this present

  749. age God's loving giving nature is seen

  750. in his relationship to

  751. people Look at first John chapter 4 and

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  752. verse 10 Um in fact let's read 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  753. chapter 4 and verse 10 out loud Are you

  754. ready let's read it together

  755. In this is love not that we have loved

  756. God but that he loved us and sent his

  757. son to be the propitiation for our sins

  758. But right below the word propitiation

  759. the

  760. satisfaction So he comes to atone for

  761. our sins He comes to satisfy our sin

  762. debt So and it's not that we loved him

  763. first It's that he loved

  764. us This is amazing

  765. generosity Look at Romans 5'8 But God

  766. demonstrated his own love toward us in

  767. that while we were still sinners Christ

  768. died for us for us You see this is the

  769. present

  770. age as Jesus comes and lays down his

  771. life in this

  772. time in Galatians 2:20 We've already

    Galatians 2:20

  773. read it once this morning Look what it

  774. says But you can see here that this is

  775. what Christ has done for us I have been

  776. crucified with Christ It's no longer I

  777. who live but Christ who lives in me and

  778. the life that I now live in the flesh I

  779. live by faith in the son of God who

  780. loved me And what did he do he gave

  781. himself for

  782. me And so this is God's generosity in

  783. the present This is him redeeming us

  784. back to himself So eternity past before

  785. the world was created he's a good

  786. generous God In this present time he's a

  787. generous God He has given Christ to us

  788. But notice number three God's generosity

  789. in eternity future And this is where it

  790. really gets

  791. good This is where our mind be can begin

  792. to wonder and imagine the glories of

  793. heaven You know by the way we were again

  794. talking about this in starting point

  795. this morning Satan wants to counterfeit

  796. everything um all of your ideas about

  797. God all of your ideas about heaven all

  798. of your ideas about eternity he wants to

  799. dumb all that

  800. down He wants to confuse you about

  801. heaven He wants you to not think about

  802. hell He wants you to just kind of if

  803. focus on this present thing And if

  804. you're going to focus on beyond this

  805. present life if you're going to think

  806. about heaven he wants to distort the

  807. view of that So what are some of the

  808. images somebody said it in starting

  809. point Well God is a big grandfatherly

  810. figure with a big beard And what does

  811. heaven usually look like what do you

  812. think of with heaven in our culture what

  813. what is it we often think of somebody

  814. said it Clouds fat baby

  815. angels

  816. right golden streets whatever that means

  817. Um you know and kind of nebulous choirs

  818. singing something like that And so Satan

  819. would like to keep you in this nebulous

  820. not very attractive view of

  821. heaven when the Bible has a lot to say

  822. about what is to come The Bible has a

  823. lot to say about the glory that is

  824. coming to us and and most importantly

  825. the spiritual nature of it The fact that

  826. we keep sinning here We are involved in

  827. a sinful world here We are involved with

  828. cancer and hardship and difficulty Even

  829. this week we have precious members of

  830. our church with broken bones We have

  831. members of our church that are dealing

  832. with their blood work is way off or

  833. their blood pressure is super high and

  834. they're over there in the ER and the

  835. hospitals trying to get their blood

  836. pressure down We have other members of

  837. the church where they have loved ones

  838. that are dying We have other people who

  839. there's there's people who the

  840. relationship is very very twisted and

  841. torqued and stressed We have people who

  842. are dealing with long-term persistent

  843. promise So Satan would love to keep you

  844. focused on the things of this world and

  845. not ever consider the great promise that

  846. all that's going to be

  847. done And as God has revealed himself to

  848. you now through faith that you can lift

  849. your eyes toward heaven and see that

  850. we've barely tasted of his generosity

  851. now And what is coming is that which is

  852. worthy of our life His glory is worthy

  853. of our life and his gifts are worthy of

  854. our life that goes so far far beyond the

  855. things that you and I so

  856. frequently the shiny objects in front of

  857. us that get our

  858. attention You see God's loving giving

  859. nature is seen in his promises to come

  860. Isaiah 62 catches it a little bit in

  861. verse 5 For as a young man marries a

  862. young woman so shall your sons marry you

  863. And as the bridegroom rejoices over the

  864. bride look at this so shall your

  865. God rejoice over

  866. you And what is amazing is that God

  867. rejoices over you Now for those who come

  868. to faith in

  869. Jesus you come home to

  870. Christ And oh the joy how precious in

  871. the sight of God is the death of his

  872. saints that he brings them home to

  873. heaven He brings them home to all of the

  874. glory and the beautiful glory that is

  875. described in that Look at Zephaniah 3:17

    Zephaniah 3:17

  876. The Lord your God is in your midst A

  877. mighty one who will what he will save He

  878. will rejoice over you with

  879. gladness He will quiet you by his love

  880. He will exalt over you with loud singing

  881. This is a God who is generous in his

  882. love and he's excited about those whom

  883. he has created This is the amazing grace

  884. of

  885. God Now false doctrine would teach you

  886. this God loves you just the way you are

  887. And um you don't need to do anything

  888. because God's already given you

  889. everything and he already loves you

  890. Grace is already

  891. yours regardless of whether you

  892. recognize it or not Regardless of what

  893. you believe God's good You know the idea

  894. that everybody's going to heaven

  895. That's part of modernism That's part of

  896. classical liberalism that that cannot

  897. fathom a righteous and holy God that

  898. punishes evil and sin but redeems by

  899. grace

  900. alone those that have been lost The

  901. truth of the gospel is these truths are

  902. true for those who come to that

  903. cross the place of sacrifice and

  904. recognize we cannot save ourselves We

  905. cannot be saved by anything or anyone

  906. except the shed blood of Jesus Christ

  907. and we place our faith in him Jesus came

  908. and when he began preaching he said

  909. repent and believe the

  910. gospel that is turn away from your sin

  911. and turn to the good news that God will

  912. save And how does God save through the

  913. death of his

  914. son And so these truths God

  915. rejoices over those who come to faith in

  916. Jesus In fact Revelation 21 this is the

  917. end of your Bible And this is really the

  918. final state This is John's vision God

  919. gives John a vision And look what it

  920. says Then I saw a new heaven and a new

  921. earth This is eternity future New heaven

  922. and a new earth For the first heaven and

  923. the first earth had passed away and the

  924. sea was no more Now the idea of the sea

  925. is that which is that which is what

  926. separates from God That was the sea is

  927. the depths of of sin and difficulty So

  928. the idea of the sea is no more Verse two

  929. and I saw the holy city New Jerusalem

  930. coming down out of heaven from God

  931. prepared as a bride adorned for her

  932. husband And I heard it that how is a

  933. bride adorned for her husband man she's

  934. ready She's beautiful Everything's

  935. everything's been the smallest detail

  936. has been given attention to There's

  937. great excitement and joy So prepared as

  938. a bride adorned for her husband And I

  939. heard a loud voice from the th throne

  940. saying "Behold the dwelling place of God

  941. is with man and he will dwell with them

  942. and they will be his people and God

  943. himself will be with them as their God."

  944. Do you see that God is a relational God

  945. he wants

  946. relationship He has designed us for

  947. relationship Look at verse six And he

  948. said to me "It is done I am the Alpha

  949. and the Omega the beginning and the end

  950. To the thirsty I will give from the

  951. spring of the water of life." What does

  952. it say there at the end without payment

  953. Without payment

  954. Can you write below that

  955. grace The grace of God through Jesus

  956. Christ

  957. This is

  958. amazing Our God is a generous

  959. God He gives freely and abundantly Fill

  960. it in there at the

  961. bottom Real

  962. loving cannot be separated from

  963. selfless

  964. generous giving

  965. Real loving cannot be separated from

  966. selfless

  967. generous

  968. giving Can you look at that waterfall in

  969. front of you again just look at

  970. that This is the picture of God's

  971. flowing

  972. love It is

  973. abundant It is free

  974. It

  975. overflows through his grace and his

  976. generosity As you think about your life

  977. he's giving you everything you need

  978. pertaining to life in godliness in Jesus

  979. Christ And he lays down his life that we

  980. may know him So over the next few weeks

  981. we're going to look at our generous God

  982. We're going to be looking at his

  983. generosity and we're going to be looking

  984. at how he calls us to imitate him with

  985. the way that we live and the way that we

  986. think the way that we respond to others

  987. Our God is a generous God Would you bow

  988. with me for prayer
