  1. we study the Bible here in the life of

  2. our church we just want to encourage you

  3. to have notes in front of you take a pen

  4. and take your Bible as we come again to

  5. our series entitled Our Generous God

  6. this is a series that we've embarked

  7. upon we look at the flowing generosity

  8. of God from before the creation of the

  9. world in himself to right where we are

  10. today and as we look and we've already

  11. sung of it this morning as we look into

  12. the hope of eternity the great joy of

  13. the promises of eternity God is a

  14. generous God we looked our first Sunday

  15. um at the fact that God's love is what

  16. means his generosity it says to us that

  17. he loves us and so he is generous to us

  18. god is a God of love and that love

  19. results in generosity generosity in

  20. creation generosity in salvation

  21. generosity in patience with us he is a

  22. generous God well then we looked last

  23. week at our response to God's generosity

  24. how do we respond to him and today we're

  25. going to be looking at how do we be

  26. generous like God with our life do you

  27. have your review let's look at it we

  28. just kind of mentioned this a little bit

  29. number one God's love means that God

  30. generously gives himself to others

  31. that's exactly what he does and the

  32. motivation of it is seen in John 3:16

    John 3:16

  33. one of the most quoted verses in the

  34. Bible hopefully you can read this you

  35. can quote this with me right from your

  36. heart right now look what this verse

  37. says let's say it out loud together for

  38. God so loved the world that he gave his

  39. only begotten son that's what it is god

  40. what was the motivation for him giving

  41. his love god is a God of love look at

  42. the next part there we looked at the

  43. fact that God created all things he owns

  44. all things and he generously gives all

  45. things you can look at Romans 8:32 2

    Romans 8:32 2 Peter 1:3

  46. Peter 1:3 James 1:7 Psalm 84:11 over and

    James 1:7 Psalms 84:11

  47. over and over again we see that God is a

  48. generous God and he does not withhold

  49. anything that is good to those who are

  50. his children he is a generous God that

  51. gives us all things notice the next part

  52. there god's generosity is seen in

  53. eternity past that's before the creation

  54. of the world it's seen in the present

  55. that's the age of humanity of when we

  56. live on the earth and in that which is

  57. to come eternity future and so we see

  58. that he gives uh this across the board

  59. he's a generous God we see that in his

  60. nature as the trinity we see that in the

  61. redemption of the cross and we see that

  62. in his promises for eternal life in

  63. heaven how should we respond to him we

  64. said three things last week do you

  65. remember what they are it's three things

  66. if God is so generous how should we

  67. respond number one receive him he gives

  68. himself to you receive him it begins at

  69. the cross he gives himself through the

  70. cross that can reconcile you to himself

  71. there are numerous people that I've

  72. spoken with this week um and some are

  73. saying "I I'm I'm dealing with this i'm

  74. trying to figure this out how does this

  75. work how do I receive him?" I want to

  76. say to you that he is calling you to

  77. come to receive him we receive him by

  78. turning in repentance away from

  79. ourselves and our sin into belief in

  80. Jesus Christ as the Messiah the one who

  81. can pay for our sins and so we receive

  82. him number two if you've received him

  83. and he's given you freedom from sin and

  84. forgiveness of sin then number two you

  85. can rejoice in him and rejoice in a way

  86. that nobody else can rejoice that hasn't

  87. been given this gift of God the gift of

  88. eternal life you only you not only have

  89. a reason to live but you also have a

  90. reason to die and that's something to

  91. rejoice about you know the world is

  92. terrified of dying very often and some

  93. who are not terrified of it they they

  94. are sadly greatly

  95. disillusioned i met a guy one time who I

  96. invited him to church and he said ha me

  97. go to church it was actually for Easter

  98. sunrise it was over here on Hollywood

  99. Boulevard um I invited him to come and

  100. he said ha you don't understand i'm the

  101. devil i'm not going to church and I said

  102. "You're the devil." I said "Sir you're

  103. not the devil but I think you're going

  104. to meet the

  105. devil." I honestly said that to him and

  106. I said "I'm

  107. serious you're not the devil but you're

  108. going to meet him if you don't turn away

  109. from that." You know there's some people

  110. that say "Well I'll see you in hell you

  111. know or I'll fight you in hell," or

  112. whatever it is they they speak very

  113. cavalerely about those things they're

  114. severely delusional in that when we

  115. consider the realities of a fallen world

  116. and we consider the words of God that

  117. warn us about turning away from him oh

  118. the grace that he offers us that we

  119. would not be cut off from him that we

  120. would not endure the due penalty of our

  121. sins but that we are completely and

  122. totally forgiven and not just forgiven

  123. but called his child and listen to this

  124. called

  125. righteous that he counts unto us

  126. righteousness he it's the scripture says

  127. he imputes the righteousness of Christ

  128. he presses the righteousness of Christ

  129. upon us he clothe us in a robe of

  130. righteousness this is the robe of

  131. Christ's death on the cross for you this

  132. is the gospel and so we can rejoice in

  133. him and no longer carry the burden of

  134. our sin and no longer walk in the way of

  135. delusion number three if we have

  136. received him and we rejoice in him he

  137. calls us to imitate him he calls us to

  138. act like him to be like him to be godly

  139. that means godlike and how is God he is

  140. a god of generosity so he calls us to

  141. generosity and he calls us to gladness

  142. do you see there on the outline this is

  143. a very important verse from last week

  144. ephesians

  145. 5:es 1 and two do you see that there

  146. below number three imitate him let's

  147. read that verse out loud together okay

  148. i'd like to ask you to read let's do it

  149. strong from the start um so we don't

  150. have to do it two or three times let's

  151. do it strong from the start and let's

  152. read this because it's so critical this

  153. is where we see and this isn't the only

  154. place that the Bible says this in fact

  155. the Bible says over and over and over

  156. again that we are to be like God we are

  157. to act like God let's read it what does

  158. it say ephesians 51 and 2 therefore be

  159. imitators of God as beloved children and

  160. walk in love as Christ loved us and gave

  161. himself up for us a fragrant offering

  162. and sacrifice to

  163. God god was the sacrifice of the cross

  164. god given to God on our behalf this is

  165. the son in perfect obedience to the

  166. father offering up his life and listen

  167. to this this is the father accepting the

  168. perfect sacrifice of the

  169. son so that you may go

  170. free in just a few days on Good

  171. Friday we will gather in this room at

  172. the table of the Lord it was on that

  173. Good Friday that Jesus was in the tomb

  174. for us that Jesus went all the way to

  175. death for us god of

  176. God that would lay down his life for us

  177. take the the perfect holy sinless God

  178. would take Andrew Coleman's sin and take

  179. your name your name your sins if you

  180. will come to him he takes your sins upon

  181. himself so that you can go free what a

  182. generous gift what a generous God who

  183. gives to us and he calls us to be like

  184. him to be imitators of God so this

  185. morning I want us to look again at this

  186. and how we can look at this generous God

  187. and how we can be like him how we can uh

  188. be honest like him and the story really

  189. starts and and this is really a

  190. continuation in a way from last Sunday

  191. because uh last Sunday we looked at 2

  192. Corinthians 9 today we're going to look

  193. at 2 Corinthians 8 so we're backing up a

  194. little bit and it's a bit of a story i

  195. want you to see the story do you see

  196. this map in front of you i love maps

  197. they help me understand the Bible um

  198. it's a good thing to have a map and to

  199. be able to study the Bible a little bit

  200. but um notice um what is the central

  201. body of water in this map mediterranean

  202. the Mediterranean Sea okay a little bit

  203. of geography challenge here what is

  204. below the Mediterranean Sea africa

  205. africa very good what's above the

  206. Mediterranean Sea europe okay europe and

  207. Central Asia okay so that's good um and

  208. then what is to the east side of the

  209. Mediterranean Sea middle East israel

  210. middle East very good israel in the

  211. Middle East and here we see this next

  212. one here jerusalem so you have your

  213. orientation on this the great city of

  214. God this is God's plan this is where God

  215. began all of his work among his people

  216. this is just the place that God chose

  217. down he could have chose to do this in

  218. Reikovic Iceland he could have chose to

  219. do this in Buenosares i know we have

  220. some people who think he did um but um

  221. he could have chose to do this in Havana

  222. or or Washington DC or Phoenix Arizona

  223. but you know what he chose to do it in

  224. Jerusalem and so he chose to work in

  225. this special place on a place called

  226. Mount Mariah which would eventually

  227. become the place of sacrifice for us and

  228. so this is where he chose to do it and

  229. so um we see that salvation comes is

  230. bought and paid for just outside the

  231. city walls of Jerusalem and the gospel

  232. begins to go out from there the gospel

  233. goes across North Africa across Egypt

  234. and across North Africa and the gospel

  235. goes up around the Mediterranean Sea

  236. takes off flourishes the apostles are

  237. going they're preaching the gospel and

  238. before very long the Apostle Paul on

  239. numerous missionary journeys is going to

  240. places like Macedonia and Aaya and so

  241. forth so this story takes place in a

  242. place called Macedonia and uh Corinth so

  243. notice where that is this is modernday

  244. Greece so that part that says Galatia

  245. over there that's Turkey that's modern

  246. day Turkey but modern day Greece is

  247. Macedonia all the way down to Corinth

  248. what is one of those big cities that you

  249. see very popular city that's next to

  250. Corinth

  251. athens that was the center of the Greek

  252. Empire what's at Athens the Acropolis

  253. right these massive centers of Western

  254. civilization

  255. um in this um but we see um Athens is

  256. not one of the letters in the New

  257. Testament but a little town called

  258. Corinth is and uh we're going to see

  259. that but not only Corinth but go on to

  260. the next slide there guys this area

  261. called Macedonia up to the north has

  262. several key places you see Philippi what

  263. book of the Bible was written to the

  264. church at Philippi

  265. Philippians was written to that place a

  266. church that was there what about

  267. Thessalonica or um I don't know it's

  268. ever since I went there and heard them

  269. say it the way it's supposed to be said

  270. it's Thessaloni can you say Thessaloni

  271. thessaloniki sounds a little strange

  272. right we change it for English but

  273. Thessalonica um and Berea um there's not

  274. a book of the Bible uh listed but Berea

  275. is mentioned numerous times so there

  276. were there were churches up in this area

  277. called Macedonia and there were churches

  278. down in Aaya which is where Corinth is

  279. now I want you to look and zoom in with

  280. me at Corenth corinth is placed at an

  281. ismouth so right next to this and notice

  282. that line right there through the middle

  283. of that do you know what that is that's

  284. where two bodies of water the Adri the

  285. Aian and the Adriatic come together and

  286. there's this narrow section of land that

  287. is there and this is very interesting

  288. back in the time that this was written

  289. there was not a canal cut through this

  290. ismaths an ismaths is when two large

  291. land masses come together at a narrow

  292. point kind of like in Panama so um just

  293. like there's a Panama Canal there's also

  294. check this next picture out there's a

  295. Corinthian canal now it's quite an

  296. amazing thing i've been there i've stood

  297. on that bridge that's right there in

  298. front of you and I have seen and look

  299. it's not very long it's It's rather

  300. short but massive ships go through that

  301. deep canal um isn't that amazing

  302. wouldn't you like to be on a cruise ship

  303. going through there

  304. but cruise ships go through there

  305. warships go through there container

  306. ships go through there and you know what

  307. here's what's interesting while there

  308. wasn't a canal there there were ships

  309. being hauled and rolled across that

  310. landmass in Paul's day so there wasn't a

  311. canal but it was a narrow place and if

  312. you were a merchant instead of having to

  313. go and sail all the way around that

  314. southern part of Greece listen to this

  315. where there's very often bad weather

  316. there's great winds that are in that

  317. area so a lot of times when they would

  318. seek to go sail around those treacherous

  319. islands and those land masses at many

  320. times of the year they couldn't get

  321. their products through there and so what

  322. they did was there was a road that was

  323. on top of that ground and you could with

  324. your ship you could come up there and

  325. your crew now that's not the road that's

  326. this is Hang on back up just a little

  327. bit um I I want you to imagine though

  328. there was a road there and they had logs

  329. huge round logs and those ships would be

  330. pulled with horses and mules and and

  331. slaves pulling those ships across that

  332. ismouth and it was safer and faster than

  333. sailing around now when that happened

  334. did the sailors pull the ships

  335. not usually you contracted with a group

  336. to pull your ship across the isithmas so

  337. what does that mean the sailors were

  338. doing they're bored what do sailors do

  339. when they get

  340. bored they act up right you've heard the

  341. term curse like a sailor i know a few of

  342. you are sailors in here we're not trying

  343. to demean you it's kind of like talking

  344. about lawyers that's an easy target

  345. right um but sailors were a rough crowd

  346. and why because they weren't with family

  347. they were actually going from from port

  348. to port to port with no accountability

  349. of family no accountability of many

  350. people who knew their morals were often

  351. very very loose very rough and Corinth

  352. was a place where they would hang out

  353. now you can go to the next slide so

  354. Corinth is right there by this mountain

  355. and on top of this mountain was actually

  356. pagan temples with harlots

  357. a thousand harlots would come off of

  358. that pagan temple in the top of that um

  359. numerous times of the year and those

  360. harlots would come down those

  361. prostitutes would come down into Corinth

  362. for all of the guys that were sitting

  363. around waiting on their ships to go over

  364. so now go to the next one you see the

  365. ruins that are there today there was a

  366. church there called Corenth

  367. and that church you can imagine was

  368. seeking to be a church but they had a

  369. hard

  370. time there were there were pure there

  371. was a period in that church when they

  372. became very very worldly and very

  373. immoral and the apostle Paul wrote to

  374. that church and said "You people need to

  375. repent you are far from God you are

  376. acting in ways that are not from God you

  377. need to repent and do you know that they

  378. did they repented of their

  379. sin and second Corinthians is one of the

  380. letters that he writes and he recognizes

  381. that they repented of their sins and not

  382. only did they repent of their sins but

  383. they started to get their house in order

  384. they started to act like Christians

  385. should act under the holiness of God

  386. because of the salvation of God in their

  387. lives and as part of that Paul was

  388. sending Titus to them paul was going and

  389. preaching to them and Paul was including

  390. them in the call to give and to give

  391. generously to an offering that they were

  392. taking in fact Paul had tried to get

  393. them to participate in financial relief

  394. for the believers in Jerusalem so you go

  395. back to the Jerusalem slide notice this

  396. jerusalem was under great uh difficulty

  397. because of a plague and and because of a

  398. famine and there was also persecution in

  399. Jerusalem and so the church in Jerusalem

  400. there were many believers there and they

  401. were really suffering so all of these

  402. other places were taking an offering to

  403. help the church in Jerusalem and so that

  404. is that is more of the picture of what

  405. we deal with here and this passage and

  406. this even this series this morning as

  407. we're about to read this passage this is

  408. so good for

  409. us because God calls us to be

  410. generous like him with our whole

  411. life and like the Corinthian church that

  412. was dealing with great ungodliness

  413. around them listen to this we deal with

  414. great ungodliness around us

  415. and if you think about it with me what

  416. has been in the

  417. headlines on a global sense in the last

  418. several

  419. weeks a

  420. war and not just a war in Ukraine not

  421. just a war in Israel not just saber

  422. rattling in China but listen to this

  423. there's also a war that has been going

  424. on

  425. forever over the things of this world

  426. over

  427. wealth and without any political

  428. commentary whatsoever I simply want you

  429. to

  430. recognize this morning that humanity is

  431. always in this fight for

  432. stuff in this fight for

  433. wealth and that that goes on at the

  434. micro level at the little village

  435. somewhere off in Vietnam or somewhere

  436. down in Uruguay that that is that is at

  437. every level in every society that we are

  438. struggling with that so what are the

  439. ways in which we see it we see it in

  440. tariff wars we see it in prices we see

  441. it in corporate issues of sometimes one

  442. company treating another company bad or

  443. one company treating employees bad or

  444. employee to

  445. employee we see it in

  446. workcoholism when we're obsessed with

  447. work because we want more of the things

  448. of the world and we feel like this is

  449. our obligations this is the only way to

  450. do it and there's not a balance in our

  451. lives maybe we see it in theft

  452. we see it that humanity typically is not

  453. generous like God and it brings great

  454. stress upon our

  455. lives it brings great stress upon our

  456. world it brings great stress upon our

  457. relationship so I I want you to

  458. interpret with a Christian worldview

  459. when you see country to country when you

  460. see person to person business to

  461. business when you see fight and struggle

  462. and you see underhanded means and you

  463. see intimidation you see all of these

  464. things listen this is the result of

  465. living in a sinful world and our desire

  466. for more or desire in some cases for

  467. survival

  468. and so when we see this we see that we

  469. are in a war it may not be a shooting

  470. war but it is in an ideological war and

  471. in an economic war that we often find

  472. ourselves and then we we feel that

  473. pressure upon ourselves and our family

  474. and our house and our

  475. future and so this is a very powerful

  476. passage

  477. um these passages this concept that

  478. we're looking at about God's generosity

  479. that the fact that he flies way above

  480. all of

  481. this he owns it all and the sooner we

  482. realize he owns it all he can cause

  483. anything to happen if he can create from

  484. nothing he can he can cause anything to

  485. happen concerning our lives and he calls

  486. us to lift up our eyes from the soup

  487. that we're

  488. in of

  489. stuff and of pressure of life he calls

  490. us to lift up our eyes and to see who he

  491. is and how he acts and then listen to

  492. this to see what he offers to us what he

  493. promises to us in this life if we will

  494. look to him and if we will live like he

  495. is and so notice here with me this

  496. passage of scripture and I'm going to

  497. read it and then we'll look at a couple

  498. of background issues here so in 2

    2 Corinthians 8:7

  499. Corinthians 8:7 look what it says we

  500. want you to know brothers this is Paul

  501. writing um we want you to know brothers

  502. and who's he writing to in this one the

  503. Corinthians so he's he's writing to

  504. those people down there at the

  505. Corinthian Canal that church that have

  506. been through a rough time that was doing

  507. better we want you to know brothers

  508. about the grace of God that has been

  509. given among the churches of where

  510. macedonia that's to the north

  511. for in a severe test of

  512. affliction their abundance of joy and

  513. their what

  514. extreme poverty have overflowed into a

  515. read it out loud wealth of generosity on

  516. their

  517. part for they gave according to their

  518. means as I can testify and beyond their

  519. means of their own

  520. accord begging us earnestly for the

  521. favor of taking part in the relief of

  522. the saints now what does that mean the

  523. relief of the saints that's the offering

  524. for Jerusalem now remember with me

  525. saints are anyone who knows Jesus Christ

  526. um we're not talking about statues in

  527. Rome we're not talking about Old

  528. Testament figures alone we're talking

  529. about anyone who has come to faith in

  530. Jesus Christ if you have come to faith

  531. in Jesus Christ the Bible declares you

  532. holy you are considered by God a saint

  533. of God and so this is talking about

  534. Christians this is talking about

  535. Christians in Jerusalem so notice what

  536. it says here they they earnestly for the

  537. favor they begged for the favor of

  538. taking part in the relief of the saints

  539. and this not as we

  540. expected but they gave themselves first

  541. to the Lord and then by the will of God

  542. to

  543. us verse six accordingly we urged Titus

  544. that as he had started so he should

  545. complete among you talking about the

  546. Corinthians so Titus had gone there

  547. originally to receive part of the

  548. offering from the people at Corenth

  549. encountered all of these problems with

  550. Corinth but he says look at verse 6

  551. accordingly we urge Titus that as he had

  552. started so he should complete among you

  553. this act of

  554. grace that as you excel in everything in

  555. faith and speech and knowledge in all

  556. earnestness and in all our love for you

  557. so that you excel in this act of grace

  558. also we're going to see what that means

  559. first of all number one fill it in we've

  560. already said it paul is writing to the

  561. church at Corenth you understand that

  562. number two Paul commends them for

  563. repenting of their great sinfulness

  564. that's in the chapter before in verse 7

  565. he commends them for that and in other

  566. places in 2 Corinthians so he commends

  567. them for repenting of great sinfulness

  568. number three Paul is taking a widespread

  569. collection for suffering Christians

  570. where in Jerusalem so Christians are

  571. suffering everywhere but God had led

  572. them to take an offering for the

  573. Christians in Jerusalem number four Paul

  574. tells the Corinthians about the great

  575. filidan the great generosity of the

  576. Macedonian people and so he's he's

  577. lifting them up as an example to them

  578. number five Paul challenges them to give

  579. of

  580. themselves give of all of themselves and

  581. that means including their money

  582. including their money and so this is

  583. what God calls them to do through the

  584. Apostle Paul now it is so interesting to

  585. me that um with Christians

  586. um a lot of times when money comes up in

  587. this room right here in this setting

  588. with you here with me here with all of

  589. us here in this

  590. room that for some people there's a

  591. great joy that this is brought up there

  592. was a lady that used to sit right back

  593. here about where Maggie's sitting and

  594. her name was Dixie um and Miss Dixie

  595. would sit there and she would come up to

  596. me after the service and she'd say

  597. "Preacher you don't preach on money

  598. enough." So she was with her name was

  599. Dixie Sawyer she's in heaven now but she

  600. was a member of this church for 60 years

  601. and she would come to me and she said

  602. "People haven't discovered the joy of

  603. giving." She said "You you got to help

  604. him discover that." She said "You need

  605. to preach on money more." And then you

  606. know you preach on money and then

  607. there's somebody that says "If you ever

  608. talk about money again I'm never coming

  609. back." It's amazing the polarization of

  610. this because the ones who have

  611. discovered the joy of trusting God see

  612. how essential it is to their life and

  613. the joy that's in their life there's I I

  614. shared Wednesday night that during

  615. CO when nobody was able to come to

  616. church for a few

  617. weeks that there was the pastors were

  618. here I was here the church staffs many

  619. of the church staff were still able to

  620. come to work and there were some who

  621. would drive their car over here elderly

  622. people that we believed were at a

  623. greater risk that would come over here

  624. and they would say I it's man it's

  625. Monday and I I want to give i don't want

  626. I want to give or I was paid and I want

  627. to give there were numerous people that

  628. came and said I you can't keep me from

  629. giving i may not be able to come to

  630. church and worship but I am not going to

  631. miss giving back to God it's amazing

  632. they were intent on it instead i mean

  633. the maximum excuse not to give co You

  634. know and here they were saying "No I I'm

  635. not going to miss that." You see we

  636. don't need to get all tense about money

  637. we don't need to get all upset about

  638. that we just need to begin to see it as

  639. God sees it and we begin to see it as

  640. God sees it the creator of the universe

  641. it can cause all things to happen at any

  642. time we can start to see his heart his

  643. generosity and man and and the scripture

  644. says it old Testament and New Testament

  645. all this money stuff this is just a

  646. test it's a test young person it's a

  647. test young man young woman it's a test

  648. of what is going to rule your life what

  649. are you going to live for are you going

  650. to live for the things that are passing

  651. away or are you going to live for the

  652. things that are eternal are you going to

  653. sink your teeth and your trust into the

  654. one who owns all things or are you going

  655. to

  656. scramble after getting a little bit more

  657. of the things that you won't be able to

  658. keep these are exactly the words that

  659. Jesus would use at different points

  660. exactly the sentiment in fact notice on

  661. the bottom of your outline here Paul

  662. writing this Paul is like Jesus when it

  663. comes to talking about money what do I

  664. mean by that well first of all Jesus

  665. spoke more about money than what jesus

  666. spoke more about money than

  667. what jesus spoke more about money than

  668. heaven or hell you think well heaven's

  669. pretty important aren't we i mean isn't

  670. that a great thing isn't that where God

  671. that's where Jesus came from that's

  672. where he's going to it's what he came to

  673. bring us to well listen money is such a

  674. big deal in this earthly life he spoke

  675. more about it because it's very

  676. consequential it's consequential talk

  677. about consequence what about

  678. hell he spoke more about hell than he

  679. did about heaven in case if you're

  680. wondering about that but you know what

  681. he spoke more about hell he spoke more

  682. about

  683. money because the ma fact of the matter

  684. is our obsession with the things of this

  685. life can take us to hell in fact that's

  686. exactly what he says when he says it's

  687. easier for a camel to go through with

  688. the eye of a needle than it is for a

  689. wealthy person to enter the kingdom of

  690. heaven why because the more you have the

  691. more you're tempted to focus on the

  692. things of this life as opposed to the

  693. things that are eternal notice the next

  694. one here out of 39

  695. parables 11 of them were about money

  696. did you know that okay now I know it

  697. doesn't take a really strong

  698. mathematician to figure this out but

  699. that's roughly what percentage of all

  700. the parables are dealing with money

  701. how many parables

  702. 40 right about 40 39 40 parables right

  703. 11 of them that's about what 10 so what

  704. does this mean

  705. 25% of the parables are about

  706. money this is

  707. amazing notice

  708. this the Gospel of Luke is saturated

  709. with teachings on earthly wealth so when

  710. you look at the gospels it's interesting

  711. that Luke who was a physician who was

  712. more of a Greek mindset Greekbased

  713. thinker is dealing with the issues of

  714. wealth because earthly wealth is such a

  715. powerful thing in fact in Luke 12:34

    Luke 12:34

  716. Jesus says this "For where your what

  717. your treasure is there your heart will

  718. be also." And so this is this is really

  719. important for our lives that we think

  720. deeply about this big subject concerning

  721. our relationship with the Lord and our

  722. relationship with others and our life

  723. that is before us i mean it's in the

  724. news headlines you know I I hope the

  725. next time you see a news headline a news

  726. story maybe this afternoon or tomorrow

  727. or whatever it is I I hope that you see

  728. wow this is the world scrambling for

  729. it this is part of the

  730. curse and the world is is going after it

  731. tooth tongue and

  732. toenail and God has the answer to

  733. it the key is does he have the answer to

  734. it in our own hearts let's read the

  735. passage again and let's see this again

  736. and then we'll just kind of really mine

  737. out a few truths from it this morning

  738. look what it says up there in the box on

  739. the top of the page we want you to know

  740. brothers about the what the grace of

  741. God that has been given among the

  742. churches of

  743. Macedonia for in a severe test of

  744. affliction their abundance of joy and

  745. their extreme poverty have overflowed

  746. into a wealth of generosity on their

  747. part for they gave according to their

  748. means as I can testify and beyond their

  749. means of their own accord begging us

  750. earnestly for the favor of taking part

  751. in the relief of the saints for this not

  752. as we expected but they gave themselves

  753. first to the Lord and then by the will

  754. of God to us accordingly we urge Titus

  755. as he had started so he should complete

  756. among you this act of grace that as you

  757. excel in everything in faith and speech

  758. and knowledge and all earnestness and in

  759. our love for you see that you excel in

  760. this act of grace also and that's

  761. talking about being generous

  762. so number one notice the Macedonians act

  763. of grace that's what they're calling it

  764. here that's what the Apostle Paul calls

  765. it under the leadership of the Holy

  766. Spirit and it's this key word it's the

  767. word carus um some of you um have met

  768. somebody named Caris or Carus and that's

  769. a beautiful name it it means grace um

  770. but that's the Greek word for it um and

  771. grace occurs eight times in chapter 8

  772. where where we are now and chapter 9

  773. where we were last week eight times it

  774. shows up notice in this one and uh look

  775. at the screen in front of you notice

  776. what it says in verse one uh they want

  777. you to know brothers about the grace of

  778. God look down in verse six accordingly

  779. we urged Titus that he had started so he

  780. should complete among you this act of

  781. grace and then at the very end he says

  782. "See that you excel in this what?" Act

  783. of grace and that is said stated several

  784. more times in the rest of chapter 8 and

  785. in chapter 9 so I what I want you to see

  786. here is that this is talking about the

  787. undeserved favor of God in our salvation

  788. that's where it begins so because God

  789. saves us we are called to to act like

  790. God in having grace toward others and so

  791. it's also the undeserved gifts of the

  792. saints let me just say to you that the

  793. believers in Macedonia the believers in

  794. Philippi Thessalonica the believers in

  795. Corenth they were under no obligation in

  796. this way to give but they gave in grace

  797. they gave in generosity that we see this

  798. tremendous this tremendous motivation

  799. this tremendous um plan of God of grace

  800. and so as grace has been shown to to you

  801. God calls you to show grace to others um

  802. so as salvation has come to you God has

  803. called you to show help and grace and

  804. help to others look at number two notice

  805. the Macedonians extreme

  806. affliction and deep poverty so what we

  807. know about Macedonia was there were a

  808. couple of Roman towns um in that Greek

  809. area that were very powerful and very

  810. rich but you know what those Roman towns

  811. were doing those Roman colonies were

  812. doing to all the surrounding

  813. towns raping them

  814. economically the Roman towns would exact

  815. great taxes upon the locals that were

  816. around them and the Roman towns would

  817. exact Rome's uh Rome's uh tremendous

  818. decadence on the other on the other

  819. towns that were around them and what we

  820. see in this is that the church just like

  821. the other people in those areas were

  822. suffering so in Macedonia it's not just

  823. in Jerusalem where they're suffering we

  824. see that in Macedonia there was a lot of

  825. suffering and we see in the scriptures

  826. as well as secular history that there

  827. were great persecutions happening in

  828. Macedonia and so the Christians were

  829. under pressure up there they had less

  830. and they were struggling and they were

  831. persecuted so they we we see this

  832. extreme poverty in fact severe

  833. affliction is what it says this is an ex

  834. this is persecution and harassment so

  835. they're being harassed by the Romans and

  836. they're being harassed by the pagans and

  837. around them and then there's this

  838. interesting word look at verse two with

  839. me for in a severe test of their

  840. abundance for severe test of their of

  841. affliction their abundance of joy and

  842. their extreme what does it say their

  843. extreme

  844. poverty have overflowed now that's

  845. translated extreme poverty but you know

  846. what word is used there that talk about

  847. the depth of their party it's the

  848. extreme poverty or the

  849. baos that's the that's actually the

  850. Greek word there the deep the deep

  851. poverty so these are really deep now

  852. that word baos you know what that comes

  853. to mind when I think about

  854. that look at this

  855. thing what's that thing

  856. now you talk about a crazy dude look at

  857. the next

  858. picture there he

  859. is where's he going to

  860. go he's going to go down in the water

  861. right because what was that thing called

  862. a bathosphere do you see that on the

  863. side of this one a

  864. bathosphere and so a baosphere is for

  865. the depths that's the word that is used

  866. here talking about these people's

  867. poverty it's like the depths of the sea

  868. and I've included they're down to the

  869. depths poverty these were poor people

  870. who were giving and finding the joy of

  871. God in their

  872. giving basically fill it in they were

  873. the poor and picked

  874. on they were the poor and picked on and

  875. yet unlike other places they were found

  876. to be generous and

  877. joyful generous and joyful well notice

  878. the next part here we see in verse 2 and

  879. three notice the Macedonians generous

  880. and sacrificial gift that's what it was

  881. it was generous and sacrificial and we

  882. see it not only in verse two and three

  883. but also verse 5 look what it says in

  884. verse two for in a severe test of

  885. affliction their abundance of joy their

  886. extreme poverty have overflowed into

  887. what a wealth of generosity on their

  888. part so they're not just generous but

  889. they're wealthy in generosity that means

  890. they're really really generous look what

  891. it says for they

  892. gave according to their means so from

  893. what they had as I can testify and

  894. beyond their means you know what the

  895. indication there is they went out and

  896. found other ways to get more to give

  897. more do you see that they found a way to

  898. get more to give

  899. more do you know that there's some

  900. people in this room that you have

  901. experienced that kind of generosity from

  902. someone else i've heard stories before

  903. about some of you that said "Well maybe

  904. it was my parents or maybe it was

  905. somebody else." I mean I've heard Eric

  906. Spie talk about the fact that he went to

  907. Sheran Hills Christian School and while

  908. he was at Sheran Hills Christian School

  909. his single mom had a really hard time

  910. paying for it and so you know what she

  911. did she went out and got other jobs so

  912. that he could go to this

  913. school she went beyond her means to give

  914. more she got other jobs to give more and

  915. then after he became the headmaster he's

  916. looking through old files and his file

  917. comes up and he looks at his file he

  918. opens it up and he discovers that a

  919. member of this church had heard about

  920. his circumstance and a member of this

  921. church started helping with his tuition

  922. and he never knew it

  923. and I mean do you think those people

  924. that were in this church that were

  925. giving toward that need do you think

  926. they knew that he they were giving to a

  927. future

  928. headmaster no they were giving to a kid

  929. that got kicked

  930. out mr speed got kicked out of the

  931. school i would have kicked him out too

  932. he was horrible

  933. i'm just going to leave it at that

  934. because he wants to say "Yeah you were

  935. kicked out as well." Which is

  936. true but I want you to think about the

  937. generosity i want you to think about not

  938. just the means but going beyond to get

  939. more have you ever given to something

  940. like that have you ever given to a cause

  941. where you thought "I got to go get

  942. more." That was the attitude of this

  943. what else can we give i I remember one

  944. time when we were raising money for a

  945. mission trip Marcy kept bringing stuff

  946. out of the house that we were going to

  947. sell and I'm like "Hey we we kind of

  948. need that." Um Oh no this is going to

  949. Africa you know and I'm just going "Oh

  950. good night here we

  951. go you can't outgive

  952. God he knows and he sees." And the

  953. Macedonians they they had found out the

  954. joy of

  955. giving and nothing was going to stop

  956. them they begged to

  957. participate in

  958. this do you have that attitude high

  959. schooler do you have that attitude

  960. middle schooler because if you start

  961. working on that now it'll make it a

  962. whole lot easier when you're later is

  963. that right folks amen if you learn to

  964. give

  965. now you will you know with young people

  966. in this day and time we we have raised a

  967. lot of snowflakes we've taken off all

  968. the pressures from our young people

  969. pressures to work pressures to be

  970. disciplined pressures that we and and we

  971. kind of very often we don't we don't

  972. properly train them in work ethic and in

  973. sacrifice and giving part of the reason

  974. that in our society today we now have

  975. community service hours that they have

  976. to have in order to be able to graduate

  977. that's a good thing but it it's because

  978. our society is broken down and teaching

  979. children to

  980. serve and so we have to mandate

  981. it we live in a selfish world now I'm

  982. glad to say that we got a bunch of

  983. middle schoolers and high schoolers in

  984. this church that are glad to serve they

  985. look for ways to serve and they'll

  986. they'll come help with younger they'll

  987. help with that they'll help at campus

  988. care day they'll help on special

  989. projects and so forth they're like I'm

  990. here to

  991. serve but I want us to see that this is

  992. the giving heart of God coming out in

  993. his

  994. people so number three the mass

  995. Macedonians generous and sacrific

  996. sacrificial gift we see here it went

  997. beyond

  998. expectations and we see that in verse

  999. two we see it especially in verse three

1000. and then look in verse five look what it

1001. says and and this what does it say not

  1002. as we

1003. expected it went beyond expectations a

1004. question for you do you give beyond

  1005. expectations

  1006. look at number

1007. four the Macedonians eager and joyful

1008. emotion about this can you put out there

1009. to the side cheerful do you remember we

1010. looked last week and it comes from the

1011. next chapter for God loves what a

1012. cheerful giver that's the kind of giver

  1013. that God

1014. loves so notice this the Macedonians are

1015. eager to give look at verse four look at

1016. verse four begging us what begging us

1017. what what's the next word

1018. earnestly they're like pleading with the

1019. Apostle Paul and with Titus begging us

1020. earnestly for the favor for the favor of

1021. taking part in the relief of the saints

1022. now if I wanted to put that in good old

1023. Southern Baptist terms it might be

  1024. reversed into cajoling

1025. uh you know bribing everything else to

1026. get them to enter into the obligation of

  1027. giving

  1028. no I hope that's that's not our attitude

1029. toward giving the Macedonians they were

1030. like "Can we please be a part of this

  1031. we'd like to

  1032. give we found the

1033. joy notice this so number four the

1034. Macedonians are eager and joyful in

1035. their emotion in giving and they viewed

1036. it as a fill it in they viewed it as a

1037. privilege they're saying um they were

1038. begging us for the favor of taking part

1039. in the relief of the saints you see they

1040. saw it as a privilege to do

1041. that occasionally I meet someone that

1042. that really is their attitude toward

1043. giving they say you know if you were to

1044. somehow know about it or whatever and

1045. you say "Well thank you." They go "No no

1046. no no don't don't say thank you this is

  1047. my

1048. privilege this is my privilege to do

1049. this." As opposed to the guy that's

1050. sitting there going "Golly that was a

1051. Disney vacation I gave away." Or there

  1052. went the new

1053. dishwasher or golly I was really hoping

  1054. for a different

  1055. car

1056. boat gave a boat to the new

1057. building you know if that's your

  1058. attitude you're missing out that's not

  1059. the attitude of the

1060. Macedonians the Macedonians had the

1061. mentality of it was a privilege look at

  1062. number five here the

1063. Macedonians they had a compassionate

1064. motivation so they didn't just have the

1065. right emotion like we looked at last

1066. week but they had the right em

1067. motivation like we looked at last week

1068. they had the right motivation look at

1069. verse four in verse four begging us

1070. earnestly for the favor of taking part

1071. in underline that in the relief of the

1072. saints so their motivation was I want to

1073. help i want to be a part of relieving

  1074. their

  1075. pain and their

1076. suffering when we give into the life of

1077. missions when we give into the life of a

1078. friend when we give into the life of the

1079. church the attitude is this my

1080. motivation is I want to help with what

1081. is needed i want to help in this do you

1082. see the scaffolding around this building

1083. would you like me to to just say "Oh

1084. well the scaffolding people came and

1085. they put up all that scaffolding for

  1086. free." That's not true

1087. all the work that is being done you know

1088. whether it's for the church or whether

1089. it's for the the the single mom or

1090. whether it's for the people that I spoke

1091. with last night in India for the

1092. forwardance of the gospel in that place

1093. there are needs around us that we have

  1094. the

  1095. motivation to

1096. help jesus comes helping us he comes

1097. rescuing us he comes relieving us of our

1098. sin debt he comes healing

  1099. us in our

1100. brokenness oh the motivation of giving

1101. fill it in they viewed it as a privilege

1102. to help relieve the suffering of fellow

1103. Christians that's what they were doing

1104. that's what they wanted to do they

1105. didn't just view it as a privilege but

1106. they viewed it as a privilege to help

1107. relieve the sufferings of fellow

1108. Christians and notice what they gave we

1109. see this in verse five right right out

1110. there to the side verse five that's what

1111. you want to go up there and look look up

1112. in at the top of your outline in verse 5

1113. and this not as we expected but look

1114. what it gave but they gave what

1115. themselves can you circle that they gave

1116. themselves they gave themselves first to

1117. the Lord and then by the will of God to

  1118. us

1119. you see the greatest thing that you can

1120. do is both to give yourself to God and

1121. to receive from God his

1122. son this is this is this beautiful

1123. interaction between heaven and earth

1124. this is this beautiful interaction

1125. between the throne room of heaven and

1126. the dungeon of your sin and self the

1127. throne room of heaven says "If you'll

1128. receive me I'll come in and I'll set you

1129. free." This is what he calls us to do

1130. and so this is they give themselves

1131. first to God and then they give

1132. themselves to others that's letter A and

1133. then letter B notice what else they do

1134. they gave their money that's right they

1135. gave their money as a help to those in

  1136. need their willing

1137. sacrificial gift became a visible

  1138. manifestation of their

1139. Christlike love and we see that here

1140. that as they gave we see this look at

1141. verse six accordingly we urged Titus

1142. that he had started so he should

1143. complete among you this act of grace but

1144. as you excel in everything in faith and

1145. speech and knowledge and all earnestness

1146. in our love and in our love for you that

  1147. you

1148. excel in this act of grace also this is

1149. an act of grace where by which we can

1150. participate in that we show the grace of

  1151. Christ to others

  1152. what a beautiful

1153. picture of God working in the most

1154. unlikely circumstances you know you

  1155. would

1156. expect you would expect this letter to

1157. be written from somewhere like

1158. referencing the believers in Rome that

1159. were in the capital city with all the

1160. money Christians in Rome or you would

1161. expect this to come from you know the

1162. these kind of accolades these kind of

1163. commendations these kind of bragging on

1164. their giving to come from the people up

1165. in Antioch that had a whole lot more

1166. money or maybe down in

1167. Athens or maybe in Corenth that had a

1168. lot more money but instead what we see

1169. is this poor persecuted section is the

1170. is the group that is giving the most

1171. didn't Jesus do that with the little

1172. widow woman that came into the temple

1173. one day in the most unlikely of places

1174. the poorest of them all there in the

1175. temple that day she comes in and she

  1176. puts the widow's

1177. might and Jesus sees it and it's like he

1178. stops everything he li read it yourself

1179. he lifts up his voice and a loud voice

1180. and he says "Everybody stop look this

1181. woman gave more today than anybody

1182. else because she gave all she

1183. had she gave more than the largest

1184. amount of anyone there that day you see

1185. and we'll we'll look at that next week

1186. as we as we look at how God works

1187. through our giving and how he helps us

1188. with that and he and he inspires us with

1189. that this is beautiful this is the way

  1190. of God

1191. and yet Satan wants you to not know

1192. this satan wants this to just be a point

1193. of stress for you satan wants to keep

1194. you away from learning some key things

1195. that will bring blessings to your life

  1196. that you never

1197. saw he wants to keep this from your mind

1198. and from your heart he wants to distort

  1199. it

1200. and so we see this look at this the call

1201. to action and we see it in verse 7 he

1202. says "But as you excel in everything in

1203. faith and speech and in knowledge and in

1204. all earnestness," this is talking about

1205. look up there at verse 7 all these

1206. things faith speech and knowledge in all

1207. earnestness he's saying "Look as you

1208. become superch Christians you know kind

1209. of visible on the outside you know

1210. you're growing in knowledge of God

1211. you're growing your your your speech is

1212. becoming more and more seasoned like a

1213. Christian like God instead of like the

1214. world speech would be a big one there

1215. because we're talking about Corinth and

1216. what is one of the phrases cursing like

1217. a sailor right yeah okay less

  1218. inhibitions whatever knowledge growing

  1219. in knowledge of that

1220. earnestness so they're growing in their

  1221. passion for

1222. God and in our love for you he's saying

1223. that you're realizing how much we Paul

1224. and Titus love you guys um you're you're

1225. growing in that but he says "See to it

1226. that you excel in this act of grace

1227. also." What he's saying is see to it

  1228. that you excel in

1229. giving can you put that down there

1230. beside that right down below that under

1231. the box in giving in giving

1232. generously see that you grow in

1233. that there's roughly 40% of the people

  1234. in this

1235. room that have not grown in

1236. that 40% of the people in this room

1237. have very very little compared to what

  1238. God has given

1239. them this is to all of us

1240. this is all maybe maybe it's through

1241. this that you would start to say golly I

1242. want I want to take a step of faith in

1243. this area of my life and there's so much

1244. about this in the New Testament there's

1245. so much about what God can do in your

1246. life as you learn to trust him with the

1247. daily stuff like the daily stuff of

1248. money trust and obey for there's no

1249. other way to be happy in Jesus but to

  1250. trust

  1251. and obey

  1252. That's

  1253. learning this act of

  1254. grace it is

1255. interesting that for Marcy and me the

1256. issue of personal finance and

  1257. giving has grown our

  1258. faith

1259. greatly our faith that was very small

  1260. sometimes when

1261. God prompted us led us through a sermon

  1262. through a friend through somebody's

  1263. example to

1264. give as God pushed that our faith grew

1265. you know if you're not giving in such a

1266. way that your faith is not

1267. challenged I want to encourage you that

  1268. I don't think you're giving in a

  1269. biblical

1270. way god calls you to give in such a way

1271. that you're being ch like Lord how's

  1272. this going to

1273. work and I can tell you that from

1274. personal experience and most of the

1275. people in this room that would love to

1276. get up here and talk about this they

1277. would love to get up here i mean the

1278. genuine people that I know have just

1279. grown in this area of their life they

1280. they would say the same thing oh I've

1281. learned to trust him because as Carrie

1282. Johnson said two weeks ago his shovel is

1283. a lot bigger than my shovel i shovel out

1284. and he shovels in and he is always

  1285. taking care of my

1286. needs this is what God does

1287. notice what he says here or in um this

1288. like Jesus Paul calls Christians to give

1289. fill that in to give i I left that word

1290. out to give everything including money

1291. to the needs of others in the work of

1292. the kingdom of God's kingdom look at

1293. verse eight i say this not as a command

1294. but to prove by the earnestness of

1295. others that your love also is genuine

1296. you see your giving can can reveal a

1297. genuine faith verse N for you know the

1298. grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that

1299. though he was rich yet for your sake he

1300. did what he became poor he gave his life

1301. away he did not hold on equality with

1302. God a thing to be grasped philippians 2

1303. says "But he gave up the glory of heaven

1304. to come and be born in a manger

1305. yet for your sake he became poor so that

1306. you by his poverty that means Jesus

1307. humbling himself to the cross so that

1308. you by his poverty might become rich

1309. that means that you're given all things

1310. in God which is what the scripture says

1311. in Christ we have been given everything

1312. pertaining to life and godliness you've

1313. become rich because of him the world

  1314. doesn't get this message doesn't

  1315. understand

1316. it but we are privileged to see and

1317. follow Christ's example in generous

1318. giving and why for the sake of

1319. others god wants to do a work in the

1320. lives of others through you through your

1321. giving and you can be like our generous

1322. God our God is a generous God would you

1323. stand to your feet and look at that

1324. slide for a minute our generous God are

  1325. you learning about God's generosity i

  1326. hope you're learning about God's

  1327. generosity and I

1328. hope that you are being set

1329. up to become generous like him let's

  1330. pray
