  1. we're going to go straight into the

  2. title of the message today And I want

  3. you to see this um as you hopefully have

  4. a sermon outline in your bulletin There

  5. is a sermon outline So go straight into

  6. the title of the message today um about

  7. Jesus and the resurrection So this

  8. morning we're going to be looking at one

  9. whole chapter of the Bible and it's the

  10. message is entitled the amazing

  11. resurrection Now I love this message I

  12. love this message Um I have preached it

  13. before um to a group of students and um

  14. the reason I love this message

  15. especially at Easter time is we get to

  16. catch not only the resurrection but that

  17. first Easter day and the whole day um

  18. that we see with the disciples there and

  19. um I hope and pray that this is a true

  20. blessing to you um as we come this

  21. morning now once again as we oh here's

  22. my notes I was about to say we're we're

  23. uh four for four Okay Or Okay Um I do

  24. have my

  25. notes This morning as we come to this

  26. Easter

  27. day there was a darkness that came

  28. before this

  29. time Jesus observed the Lord's supper He

  30. observed the last Passover supper And

  31. then he left that supper and went to the

  32. garden of Gethsemane to

  33. pray And it was there in that garden of

  34. Gethsemane the greatest anguish that the

  35. world has ever known was

  36. experienced by the son of God

  37. It was there that the task before him

  38. was so great and so

  39. dreadful that even the second person of

  40. the

  41. trinity in submission to the father

  42. asked if this

  43. cup would be delivered from him

  44. Lord let this cup pass from me but

  45. nevertheless not my will but thine be

  46. done So we see within the trinity the

  47. father son and the spirit We see within

  48. the trinity the perfect

  49. relationship The father submitting and

  50. loving the son submitting him to the

  51. world the son submitting to the will of

  52. the father the spirit empowering the son

  53. This is a beautiful picture But this was

  54. Thursday night of Holy

  55. Week Then what happens at the end of

  56. that prayer time they stand up from

  57. praying and here comes

  58. who

  59. judas Judas with Roman soldiers He is

  60. delivered into the hands of the Romans

  61. And that night is a very very long night

  62. where he is tortured He is taken from

  63. palace to a courtroom and he is harassed

  64. and

  65. heranged And then we would also see that

  66. he is betrayed by all of his followers

  67. Not one stands with him The one that

  68. would have been closest one of the ones

  69. closest to him Peter James and John

  70. Peter was standing at a distance and

  71. Peter denied that he even knew him

  72. cursed and denied that he knew him I

  73. hear a few son cell phones going off If

  74. you would go ahead and take out your

  75. cell phone right now Would you please do

  76. that go ahead and take out your cell

  77. phone and make sure it's silent Can you

  78. do that go ahead and take it out Take it

  79. out Make sure it's silent Go ahead and

  80. do that If you don't know how to do that

  81. put it under your heel and just smash

  82. it That would be a help for us You know

  83. every time when you come into this room

  84. it's good to just take out your cell

  85. phone and silence it My mom and dad said

  86. "We don't know how to silence it so we

  87. leave it in the car." So you know we're

  88. here for God There's nothing more

  89. important

  90. So

  91. Thursday the next day on Friday after

  92. the trials and the

  93. mockings Jesus Christ is crucified for

  94. our

  95. sins He hangs on a Roman cross

  96. It begins

  97. at 9:00 in the morning the third

  98. hour and it continues until the 9inth

  99. hour which is about 3:00 in the

  100. afternoon And it says that he cries out

  101. "It is

  102. finished." And he gives up his life

  103. Now what's very interesting to

  104. me is that at the third

  105. hour do you know what was going on in

  106. the temple just a few meters

  107. away the final Passover

  108. lamb was being slain in the temple

  109. Thousands and thousands of animals would

  110. have been slain as people brought their

  111. sacrifices to the temple every Passover

  112. But then there was the final Passover

  113. lamb that was slain

  114. So the religious system was busy doing

  115. their

  116. thing in all of their eventual

  117. misunderstanding while the real thing

  118. was dying outside the city

  119. gates on a Roman cross

  120. Jesus was taken down from the cross by a

  121. rich man named Joseph of

  122. Arythea And Joseph put him in a tomb

  123. that was there very close by just not

  124. far from the hill of

  125. Goltha And it was there inside that tomb

  126. that Jesus was laid And there he laid

  127. through the day on the evening of Friday

  128. through Saturday And then we come to the

  129. events of Luke 24 Do you have your

  130. outline there take your pen and be ready

  131. with me I love these images I've

  132. included these images to help us this

  133. morning to take in this chap this

  134. chapter And I believe that you will be

  135. blessed as we do the resurrection Look

  136. at verse one with me But on the first

  137. day of the week at early dawn they went

  138. to the tomb taking the spices they had

  139. prepared Now who is they it's a group of

  140. women We're about to see them listed

  141. here in just a minute Verse two And they

  142. found the stone rolled away from the

  143. tomb But when they went in they did not

  144. find the body of the Lord Jesus While

  145. they were perplexed about this behold

  146. two men stood by them in dazzling

  147. appearance Verse 5 And they were

  148. frightened and bowed their faces to the

  149. ground in the mid said to them "Why do

  150. you seek the living among the

  151. dead he is not here but has risen."

  152. Remember how he told you while he was

  153. still in Galilee verse 7 that the son of

  154. man must be delivered into the hands of

  155. sinful men and be crucified and on the

  156. third day rise Verse eight and they

  157. remembered his words and returning from

  158. the tomb they told all the things to the

  159. 11 and to all of the rest Now it was

  160. Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the

  161. mother of James and the other women with

  162. them who told these things to who to the

  163. apostles So the first passage that we

  164. started this service with Pastor Jason

  165. read it You saw it on of course this

  166. screen over here the the first passage

  167. talked about when Peter and John got to

  168. the tomb Well guys that's that's a

  169. little bit later than this text So these

  170. women go and tell the apostles he's not

  171. there And Peter and John go "What what

  172. do you

  173. mean?" And if you read the text and John

  174. Peter and John are going and John was

  175. younger He runs on ahead

  176. He gets there and finally Peter gets

  177. there and they stick their heads in and

  178. that's what we read at the beginning of

  179. the service Now we see what had happened

  180. before that So notice that there with

  181. me and now verse 10 And now it was Mary

  182. Magdalene Joanna and Mary the mother of

  183. James and the other women women with

  184. them who told these things to the

  185. apostles But these words seemed an idol

  186. tale and they did not believe

  187. them But Peter rose and ran to the tomb

  188. stooping and looking in he saw the linen

  189. cloths by

  190. themselves And he went home marveling at

  191. what happened Can you circle that word

  192. marveling marveling at what happened do

  193. you see do you see the title of the

  194. message today what are we what are we

  195. calling this what kind of resurrection

  196. the

  197. amazing revel

  198. resurrection When we think about

  199. marveling when we we think about

  200. something being marvelous that means it

  201. causes you to consider it

  202. deeply It causes you to be amazed by

  203. it It's a wonder

  204. It's like it's how could this be

  205. true this is very often we would also

  206. associate with something positive that

  207. it's too good to be true But

  208. again thank God that is not There's many

  209. things that we could get from these

  210. first 12 verses but I just want to give

  211. you two Can you look over there at the

  212. right hand side underneath that picture

  213. of those women whatever it would have

  214. looked like Um but but we see at first

  215. and in other places Mary Magdalene Mary

  216. mother of James and Salomi um are

  217. mentioned Joanna is mentioned but but

  218. notice this in verse 6 and 7 I want us

  219. to notice something It says these are

  220. the two these are angels in dazzling

  221. appearance These are the two men in

  222. dazzling appearance telling them in

  223. verse 6 he is not here but he has re

  224. risen

  225. Remember how he told you

  226. This is amazing Remember how he told you

  227. See what I want us to see here The first

  228. thing is notice that this was all God's

  229. plan Fill that in This was God's

  230. plan The whole plan of salvation was

  231. God's plan and it was before the

  232. foundation of the world But notice here

  233. with me Jesus foretold his

  234. death numerous times He foretold his

  235. death and his resurrection But just in

  236. Luke alone we see it in Luke 9:21 Luke

    Luke 9:21 Luke 9:43

  237. 9:43 Luke

    Luke 18:31

  238. 18:31 Luke is telling that he is going

  239. to die He said Jesus is telling that

  240. he's going to die Luke records it But

  241. what's interesting is Matthew and Mark

  242. also record all three of those

  243. foretellings of his death

  244. You see there's some people that come to

  245. the Bible with some misunderstanding of

  246. something along the lines of open

  247. theology The idea that God is figuring

  248. all this out as we are He's just doing

  249. it in his godly way No friends listen

  250. God is not figuring anything out God has

  251. a plan And that plan was before the

  252. foundation of the world that he would

  253. show us what love looks like And he

  254. would show us that in our need he has

  255. this plan In Revelation chapter write

  256. this down Revelation

    Revelation 13:8

  257. 13:8 It says before the foundation of

  258. the world God had determined his eternal

  259. plan to sacrifice the son In Acts 2:23

    Acts 2:23

  260. write that down Acts 2:23 and Acts

    Acts 2:23 Acts 4:28

  261. 4:28 Over and over again we see that

  262. before the foundation of the world

  263. before this was all started it was God's

  264. plan to show us his love by redeeming us

  265. through the

  266. Messiah So this is this is just as

  267. amazing as the resurrection itself that

  268. God has a great and glorious plan He has

  269. a plan for your life

  270. And I pray that you will listen to his

  271. voice and hear his plan Number two I

  272. want us to see something interesting And

  273. it's in verse 11 Do you see verse 11

  274. over there on the side it says "But

  275. these words these words that the angels

  276. had spoke to them these words seemed to

  277. them what does it say there

  278. an idol tale." So the

  279. apostles are hearing the women say "His

  280. body is gone Um he's risen And there's

  281. they're telling "We saw these two dudes

  282. in white dazzling appearance They told

  283. us,"Wh do you seek the living among the

  284. dead he's not dead He's alive." And the

  285. apostles are just looking and

  286. listening They're amazed by

  287. this And look what it says But these

  288. words seemed an idol tale Underline that

  289. and they did not believe

  290. them You'd say "Wow great

  291. apostles Those are the guys that you

  292. know changed the world through

  293. Jesus." Yeah You see number two is this

  294. Unbelief sometimes comes before

  295. belief Unbelief sometimes comes before

  296. belief There's two ways in which this is

  297. important for us right now There are

  298. some in this room that have never come

  299. to the place of believing in Jesus as

  300. the Messiah as the son of God who pays

  301. for the sins of the world That all who

  302. would come to him and place their trust

  303. in him that he would be their savior be

  304. because he was crucified He was laid in

  305. a tomb and he rose again overcoming sin

  306. and death And all who place their trust

  307. in him who believe in him can have

  308. eternal life There's some in this room

  309. that say "I just don't buy it

  310. I've not come to that place I have too

  311. many

  312. doubts Can I say that in a in a

  313. gracefilled

  314. way it's

  315. okay The apostles felt that way

  316. too Even the

  317. apostles felt that way

  318. too Even the apostles who had seen him

  319. do all this

  320. stuff had felt that way too

  321. They had heard him warn them "I'm going

  322. to be crucified." They heard him say

  323. "I'm going to be put to death." They had

  324. heard him say "I will be crucified but I

  325. will rise again." And yet they still did

  326. not

  327. believe We're going to see something

  328. very powerful in a few more verses from

  329. here but I just want to say to you

  330. unbelief often comes before belief

  331. And I pray that you'll see that and hear

  332. that this morning and allow God to work

  333. in your mind and your heart Well we come

  334. to scene number two and this is

  335. something called the road to Emmas Now

  336. Emmas is interesting It's a town um not

  337. too far away from Jerusalem In fact I

  338. want you to see on our one side over

  339. here Um I'm always wondering should I

  340. use this screen or should I use this

  341. screen and now I know which screen to

  342. use So Jerusalem is here Um not far from

  343. the Dead Sea not far from the

  344. Mediterranean Sea Um in the news Gaza is

  345. down here Gaza Strip is down on this

  346. side Um but here we see Jerusalem And

  347. here is Bethl Emmas And you see this

  348. road that's right here Now what's really

  349. interesting about this road it's about 7

  350. and 12 miles long which means it's about

  351. a 3-hour walk um that is there Remember

  352. that Jerusalem is on a mountain It's not

  353. a like a big mountain like even a North

  354. Carolina mountain It's it's a it's a

  355. large hill But whenever you read in the

  356. Bible it says we're going up to

  357. Jerusalem That's not talking about north

  358. or south That's talking about elevation

  359. And so the temple of God was up on the

  360. hill up on the top of the hill This was

  361. Mount Mariah This is the place of

  362. sacrifice This is the place of worship

  363. And Jerusalem was built on that holy

  364. hill But so notice this They're up on

  365. that So they're going down They're going

  366. north but they're going down to Bethl

  367. Emmas That road right there And this is

  368. interesting is if you go to the Holy

  369. Land today and you walk on some of the

  370. roads that are there when you get just

  371. outside of Jerusalem and you're walking

  372. on the Emmus road you're walking on the

  373. original Roman stones that the Romans

  374. had cut and laid for that road And it is

  375. safe to say if you go from Jerusalem any

  376. part of it along that line if you go on

  377. any part of that and you walk on those

  378. stones you're literally walking on

  379. stones that Jesus did walk

  380. on It's kind of

  381. cool Marcy and I have walked on the

  382. Emmas road before and um it's uh it's a

  383. neat thing to think that Jesus walked on

  384. this road with these two men Let's read

  385. the story here This is verse 13 So this

  386. is a little bit later in the same day

  387. And notice what it says That very day So

  388. what is that this is resurrection Sunday

  389. That very day two of them So two of

  390. these that had been following Jesus Two

  391. of them were going to a village named

  392. Emmas about 7 miles from Jerusalem And

  393. they were talking with each other about

  394. all the things that had happened While

  395. they were walking talking and discussing

  396. together Jesus himself drew near and

  397. went with them But their eyes were kept

  398. from recognizing him And he said to them

  399. "What is this conversation that you are

  400. holding with each other as you talk as

  401. you walk?" And they stood still and sa

  402. looking sad Then one of them named

  403. Cleopus answered him "Are you the only

  404. visitor in Jerusalem does not know the

  405. things that have

  406. happened there in these days?" So

  407. they're walking along and Jesus says

  408. "Why are you guys talking about this

  409. stuff why are you sad?" And they

  410. stop They sto it says they stood

  411. there and they turn and they look at

  412. this guy and they go "Are you the only

  413. person around here that doesn't know

  414. what just happened?" I mean because all

  415. of Jerusalem was it on Palm Sunday all

  416. of Jerusalem was saying "Hosana hosana

  417. to the King of Kings Lord of Lords." And

  418. then just a couple of days later all of

  419. those who seemingly believe because they

  420. were looking for an earthly Messiah And

  421. when Jesus apparently wasn't going to be

  422. the earthly Messiah and he apparently

  423. now is about to be crucified what do

  424. they they think "Oh he's a fraud Crucify

  425. him."

  426. And so the crowd so quickly and fickle

  427. turns upon Jesus But there were

  428. some who were going

  429. "No I something's wrong here I I saw

  430. what he did I know I listened to him I

  431. followed him I saw him raise that little

  432. girl from the

  433. dead This can't be true." So they're

  434. walking along They're in anguish They're

  435. trying to figure out what

  436. happened Passover is over and they're

  437. going back to

  438. Emmas Verse

  439. 19 And he said to them "What things?"

  440. And they said to him "Concerning Jesus

  441. of Nazareth a man who was a prophet

  442. mighty indeed and a word before God and

  443. all the people." Well you see they they

  444. largely had

  445. it They they saw it Verse 20 And how our

  446. chief priests and rulers delivered him

  447. up to be condemned to death and

  448. crucified

  449. him Verse 21 But we had hoped that he

  450. was the one to redeem

  451. Israel Yes And besides all this it's now

  452. the third day since these things

  453. happened

  454. Moreover some women of our company

  455. amazed us They were at the tomb early in

  456. the morning And when they did not find

  457. his body they came back saying that they

  458. had even seen a vision of angels who

  459. said that he was alive Some of those who

  460. were with us went to the tomb and found

  461. it just as the women said but him they

  462. did not

  463. see And he said to them "Oh foolish ones

  464. and slow of heart to believe all that

  465. the prophets have

  466. spoken Was it not necessary for the

  467. Christ that means Messiah the chosen one

  468. was it not necessary for the Christ

  469. should suffer these things and enter

  470. into his glory?" So that's the first

  471. part of this walk that I want us to look

  472. at here Before we turn the page notice

  473. this Number one notice that God comes

  474. and walks with us in our sorrow struggle

  475. and doubt I believe that part of the

  476. reason that the gospels include the Holy

  477. Spirit inspired Luke to include the

  478. story of the Emmas road is so that we

  479. could see that in our struggles in our

  480. pain in our doubt sometimes Jesus is

  481. walking alongside us and we don't even

  482. realize it's

  483. him We don't realize he's there We kind

  484. of don't don't see And sometimes it

  485. could be like a

  486. literal certainly an angel of some sort

  487. or God's orchestration of a set of

  488. events that you don't realize are from

  489. him But surely by his spirit he is with

  490. us in our doubt He is with us in our

  491. sorrow And we see that idea in this text

  492. You see this is a very important piece

  493. of real estate in the Bible I mean this

  494. is the last chapter of the book of Luke

  495. This is the last part of it And this is

  496. important enough to be included by the

  497. Holy Spirit for us to see that Jesus

  498. took out his time This is how he planned

  499. to spend part of his resurrection day In

  500. fact a large portion of his resurrection

  501. day was going to go be with those who

  502. didn't

  503. understand and that were in

  504. sorrow and that were toying with doubt

  505. And as only Jesus could do in his

  506. prophetic way in his bold

  507. way he says "Oh foolish ones," look at

  508. verse 25 "Oh foolish ones and slow of

  509. heart to believe all that the prophets

  510. have spoken Was it not necessary that

  511. the Christ should suffer these things

  512. and enter into his glory?" You see part

  513. of what he's saying is is that hey guys

  514. you don't understand You really don't

  515. get it You still haven't seen and

  516. listened to God You haven't listened to

  517. what he said in his word the Messiah is

  518. going to come and

  519. suffer This is powerful for us Number

  520. two

  521. um look at verse 21 Look at verse 21 The

  522. guys are speaking and they're explaining

  523. this to Jesus And they they explain in

  524. verse 20 how our chief priests and

  525. rulers delivered him up to be condemned

  526. to death and then they crucified him And

  527. then look at verse 21

  528. But we had hoped that he was the one to

  529. redeem

  530. Israel Now in a way what they hoped for

  531. was right but in a way it was

  532. wrong What they had in their mind is

  533. what everybody else had in their mind

  534. was "We hate the Romans We want to get

  535. rid of the Romans We want the Romans to

  536. no longer rule over

  537. us and we want to be delivered in this

  538. earthly

  539. affair But that's that's not what God

  540. God's plan is so much bigger than the

  541. Romans God is saying your real problem

  542. is not the Romans Your real problem is

  543. your sin and your rendevous with hell if

  544. you don't have a

  545. Messiah What God is saying is you have

  546. the Romans are nothing

  547. The one that you should fear is

  548. me whom

  549. after you are dead I can separate you

  550. forever You say "Well that that's

  551. abrasive to me That's Listen it's just

  552. the reality of the scripture and it's

  553. the reality of God's plan that he really

  554. does come to save us He really does

  555. offer to us eternal life." And so we see

  556. here that sometimes we hope for the

  557. wrong things Just fill that in Sometimes

  558. we hope for the wrong things They were

  559. looking for an earthly

  560. deliverance Some people are hoping that

  561. God will make them

  562. wealthy Some people are hoping that God

  563. will make them

  564. healthy Some people are hoping that God

  565. will give them back something that they

  566. lost And they're looking to the things

  567. of this world When the Bible and all of

  568. the gospel is calling us to lift up our

  569. eyes to eternity to lift up our eyes

  570. beyond this 60 70 80 90 years and to

  571. look to the things that really

  572. matter for all of eternity And this is

  573. why sometimes we hope for the wrong

  574. things Oh he did come to redeem Israel

  575. but he didn't come just to redeem Israel

  576. He came to redeem Israel and all of

  577. those who are grafted in in the family

  578. of God to the people of God and to

  579. deliver them for eternity from their

  580. sins not

  581. from a group of Roman

  582. oppressors Number three we see something

  583. else that I think is important for us on

  584. this Easter Sunday Number

  585. three Christ suffered for our salvation

  586. He suffered for our salvation And he

  587. suffered unlike anyone has ever suffered

  588. in this room because he who is holy had

  589. the sin of the world laid upon him Don't

  590. turn the sheet over Look here at the

  591. bottom of page 26 I mean the verse

  592. 26 He says in verse 25 "Oh foolish ones

  593. and soul of heart to believe all that

  594. the prophets have spoken." And then he

  595. asks a question as he so often does

  596. Verse 26 Was it not what is that word

  597. there

  598. necessary Can you circle the word

  599. necessary was it not necessary that the

  600. Christ should suffer these

  601. things and enter into his

  602. glory well why was it necessary it was

  603. necessary because this goes back to the

  604. point number one and scene one This was

  605. the plan of God the plan in order for us

  606. to see his love for

  607. us to see what grace and mercy look

  608. like that the perfect one would come and

  609. die for the sinful ones Can you flip the

  610. sheet let's go on with the story of

  611. these guys with

  612. Emmas What it says after he said that is

  613. did you know do you do you not see that

  614. was this was necessary look what goes on

  615. Luke says in verse 27 "And beginning

  616. with Moses." Now by that Moses put up

  617. there above that that is the first five

  618. books of the Bible So that's Genesis

  619. Exodus Leviticus Numbers and Deuteronomy

  620. That's called Moses All right so that's

  621. the first five books of the Old

  622. Testament That's the law You can put up

  623. there the law Okay and beginning with

  624. all of all of Moses's words in the law

  625. And then look at the next part and all

  626. the

  627. prophets He interpreted to them in all

  628. the scriptures the things concerning who

  629. himself This is

  630. amazing And if there's possibly any part

  631. of the teaching that Jesus that the

  632. Bible tells us that Jesus taught while

  633. on the earth if there was any part of

  634. the teaching I would love to have heard

  635. it probably would have been this talk

  636. where Jesus is walking and we don't know

  637. when this happened in the course but how

  638. long is the walk over three hours

  639. They're walking for three hours So it's

  640. possible that for hours they heard

  641. Jesus tell them "Don't you know that the

  642. Messiah is in the Old Testament here the

  643. Messiah is here The Messiah is here The

  644. Messiah is here The Messiah is here This

  645. is this is what was happening This is

  646. what God was doing all through This is

  647. why the Old Testament is so important to

  648. you You should not write off the Old

  649. Testament Sure there's parts of it that

  650. are thick and sure it requires a little

  651. bit of ramp up But I want to say to you

  652. if you will begin to see how the Old

  653. Testament

  654. fits you will be

  655. blessed Notice this as we go on You

  656. see number four is this The Old

  657. Testament all points to

  658. Jesus The Old Testament all points to

  659. Jesus Now I I want us to go on and I

  660. want us to see what happens here Look at

  661. verse 28 They're on their walk So he's

  662. talking all this time explaining to them

  663. how the Messiah is throughout the Old

  664. Testament and and being revealed Verse

  665. 28 So they drew near to the village to

  666. which they were

  667. going He acted as if he was going

  668. further That's so strange Verse 29 But

  669. they urged him strongly saying "Stay

  670. with us for it is toward evening and the

  671. day is now far spent." So he went in to

  672. stay with them And while he was at the

  673. table with them he took the bread and

  674. blessed it and broke it and gave it to

  675. them Verse 31 read it out loud And their

  676. eyes were opened and they recognized

  677. him That is so

  678. cool And then look at the next

  679. part And he vanished from their sight

  680. Boom And you know they're looking at

  681. each other and they're like "I knew it

  682. I knew it I I I you know but they didn't

  683. know it until he opened their

  684. eyes And here's the reason We see this

  685. in verse 32 I love this And they said to

  686. each other "Did not our hearts burn with

  687. us while we while he talked to us on the

  688. road while he opened to us the

  689. scriptures?"

  690. For the Christians in this room does

  691. God's word sometimes burn within you are

  692. you just amazed by it

  693. are there some times when you're reading

  694. the scripture and you go "That is so

  695. amazing That is so

  696. beautiful That is so

  697. convicting Oh the beauty of the way God

  698. works and what he does within

  699. us." Look at that Did not our hearts

  700. burn within us while he talked with us

  701. on the road while he opened to us the

  702. scriptures Verse 33 And they rose that

  703. same hour and returned to Jerusalem Now

  704. what do we know about that same hour

  705. they were sitting there having dinner

  706. What did they already say it's getting

  707. dark You know the day is gone They've

  708. had dinner with Jesus And so it's safe

  709. to say that these guys are getting on

  710. the road and they're heading back to

  711. Jerusalem to all their friends What does

  712. that mean they're walking in the dark

  713. That is something you did not do in that

  714. day and time There were no sodium ver

  715. sodium sodium vapor mercury lights or

  716. whatever um lining the road to

  717. Emmas It was dark and they were so

  718. excited They they said "We're going

  719. back." Verse 33 And they rose that very

  720. hour that same hour and returned

  721. Jerusalem And they found the 11 and

  722. those who were with them gathered

  723. together saying look at verse 34 The

  724. Lord has risen

  725. indeed and has appeared to Simon Then

  726. they told what had happened on the road

  727. and how he was known to them in the

  728. breaking of the bread

  729. You see all of the Old Testament points

  730. to Jesus And we're going to see another

  731. point in that that is also down here So

  732. we're going to come back up there in

  733. just a

  734. minute So they go back They're back in

  735. Jerusalem And then look what happens

  736. Verse

  737. 36 And as they were talking about these

  738. things Jesus himself stood among them

  739. and said to them "Peace to you." Now

  740. it's a really good thing that he said

  741. peace to you because they're all sitting

  742. there talking about this under candle

  743. light and lanterns The upper area where

  744. they are is probably packed with people

  745. In other gospels it says that they were

  746. meeting together and they were afraid

  747. because they didn't know what was going

  748. to happen with the Romans They didn't

  749. know what was going to happen with the

  750. Jews They they weren't sure exactly

  751. about all of that But here they were the

  752. apostles all together with some of the

  753. women and they're gathering together

  754. These two guys come in from Emmas It's

  755. late at night and they're saying it's

  756. really true We saw him And then all of a

  757. sudden just as he had vanished from

  758. Emmas I don't know where he went during

  759. that time We can ask him when we get

  760. there Boom He he pops back in Now he

  761. wasn't doing this kind of thing while he

  762. was in his earthly

  763. ministry But now that he has died and

  764. risen again we start to see that he is

  765. now more reflecting the traits of the

  766. Holy Spirit though still in bodily form

  767. He is Jesus in this But we start to see

  768. the way he's working and the way he's

  769. going to work in their lives through the

  770. spirit

  771. Notice what it says there He says "Peace

  772. to you." Um but they were startled and

  773. frightened and thought they had seen a

  774. ghost a

  775. spirit Verse 38 And he said to them "Why

  776. are you troubled and why do doubts arise

  777. in your heart see my hands and my

  778. feet that it is I

  779. myself Touch me and see For a spirit

  780. does not have flesh and bones as you see

  781. that I have And when he had said this he

  782. showed them his hands and his feet And

  783. while they still

  784. disbelieved for joy and were marveling

  785. he said to them "Have you anything here

  786. to eat?" And they give him gave him a

  787. piece of broiled fish And he took it and

  788. he ate before them Look at this verse 44

  789. Then he said to them "These are my words

  790. that I spoke to you while I was still

  791. with you that everything written about

  792. me in the law of Moses and the prophets

  793. and the psalms must be what fulfilled."

  794. And so the law of Moses the prophets and

  795. the psalms were all pointing to the fact

  796. that he

  797. would be the sacrifice for our sins That

  798. he would

  799. die Verse 45 I love it Can you read it

  800. out loud then he opened their minds to

  801. understand the scriptures Oh that

  802. God would open your mind to understand

  803. the scripture

  804. I want you to see here number one over

  805. there to the

  806. side God opens hearts and minds to

  807. believe in him

  808. This is a sovereign act of God

  809. This is put it down there below that

  810. This is the

  811. gift of

  812. faith You see you can't even claim your

  813. great faith because it didn't come from

  814. you It came from God Even faith is a

  815. gift from

  816. God This is how good God is We It's not

  817. just that we're drowning in the pool

  818. We're on the bottom And he comes and

  819. brings us up to the surface and he gives

  820. us life He gives us

  821. faith We see it in verse 31 and 32 up in

  822. with the road to Emmas Guys look up the

  823. top up there in verse 31 Do you remember

  824. with me they're at the table He blesses

  825. it He breaks the bread in verse 30 And

  826. he gave it to them Verse 31 You had read

  827. it just a minute ago Look what it says

  828. and their eyes were opened and they

  829. recognized

  830. him You see that's what God does He

  831. opened to them the scriptures And here

  832. we see that he tells them down in verse

  833. 45 that he is the one who opens our

  834. minds to the scriptures Look with

  835. me in verse 46 And he said to them "Thus

  836. it is written that the Christ should

  837. suffer and on the third day rise from

  838. the dead and that," look at verse 47

  839. "and that repentance for the forgiveness

  840. of sins should be proclaimed in his name

  841. to all

  842. nations." Wow There's the great

  843. commission and there's the great call to

  844. repentance That repentance for the

  845. forgiveness of sins

  846. You see some people will never be

  847. forgiven because they will never repent

  848. of their

  849. sins They will never come to the place

  850. of turning away from sin and self and

  851. turning to Christ and saying "Christ you

  852. and you alone not me and not what I want

  853. but what you

  854. want." There's some who love their sin

  855. too

  856. much to do that There's some

  857. who

  858. refuse submission to

  859. Christ They will not

  860. repent God calls us to repent My friend

  861. I would say this to you today If you

  862. hear his voice this morning saying "Come

  863. and repent and believe." Johnny Perez

  864. gave a testimony that uh at the beach

  865. his was and he usually sits right over

  866. here with these guys He was over here on

  867. a Wednesday

  868. night and the message that we were

  869. preaching we were preaching about some

  870. various issues and one of them was

  871. something that touched on his heart and

  872. he realized at that moment I must repent

  873. of this and come to

  874. Christ My friend don't turn those calls

  875. away when you hear God's voice calling

  876. you to repent

  877. repent and believe because that's where

  878. faith begins is God gives the grace to

  879. repent In Romans it says "Do you not

  880. know that it is the kindness of God that

  881. leads you to

  882. repentance?" It's the kindness of God

  883. that leads you to repentance Why would

  884. you turn him

  885. away look what it says

  886. there And to believe in him because

  887. that's what Jesus came teaching in Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  888. chapter 1 Jesus said "Repent and believe

  889. the gospel." I'll I'll just share this

  890. with you Um three or four years ago um

  891. we did the Easter sunrise service And I

  892. was there and I we we sang the gospel Uh

  893. we heard somebody give a testimony and I

  894. preached the gospel and I quoted from

  895. Mark and I was saying "Friends I call

  896. you to repent of your sins and turn to

  897. Christ believe on the gospel Well by the

  898. time I got back here to the church I

  899. received a long email and somehow I had

  900. checked my email and it was somebody who

  901. said "It's too bad Pastor Coleman that

  902. you preached a false gospel at the

  903. beach You're saying that repentance is

  904. necessary for

  905. salvation It's only grace It's just

  906. grace It's grace and grace alone There's

  907. nothing else There's nothing that is

  908. there And there you It's only grace that

  909. can save us I hope you will stop telling

  910. people that they need to

  911. repent And I said "My friend you need to

  912. go read Mark chapter 1 and Jesus's first

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  913. words of preaching the gospel."

  914. The first thing that Jesus preached

  915. was repent and

  916. believe You

  917. see the kindness of God leads us to

  918. repentance So when you start to see your

  919. sin and start to see that you need to

  920. turn away from it you turn away from it

  921. and you turn to God And that is the

  922. grace of God It is God's grace in

  923. leading you to

  924. repentance And it's God's grace that

  925. gives you the faith to believe But my

  926. friends there is no

  927. salvation without repentance of

  928. sin So if there's no repentance in your

  929. heart then you need not wonder If

  930. there's been no repentance in your heart

  931. you do not know Jesus

  932. Christ and you are still in your sins

  933. So the beautiful thing is is that he

  934. leads us to

  935. repentance and he calls us to believe

  936. and when we repent of our sins and

  937. finally come to that place of offloading

  938. all of the weight and the guilt of our

  939. sin and recognizing that it's on Jesus

  940. that we rejoice And that's where this

  941. leads to I want you to see this here in

  942. verse 48 It goes on It says "And you are

  943. witnesses of these things and behold I

  944. am sending the promise of my father upon

  945. you." You know what the promise of his

  946. father is this is the Holy Spirit The

  947. spirit is promised to come to us I'm

  948. sending the promise of my father upon

  949. you but stay in the city until you are

  950. clothed with power from on high Put down

  951. there to the bottom the Holy Spirit

  952. That's what was about to happen The Holy

  953. Spirit was about to come from come to

  954. them

  955. And so Jesus is perfectly telling us

  956. listen the Bible fits together like lock

  957. and key Don't believe the people on

  958. YouTube that are all confused about that

  959. They don't know They haven't studied it

  960. They don't really know what it says But

  961. when you start to put together how

  962. beautiful God's grand and glorious plan

  963. both logically and scripturally and when

  964. you start to study and see what it

  965. actually says it fits together like lock

  966. and key

  967. You can trust

  968. it Look at verse 50 We come to the

  969. ascension Verse 15 And he led them out

  970. as far as Bethany lifting up his hands

  971. he blessed them Verse 51 While he

  972. blessed them he parted from them and was

  973. carried up into heaven Verse 52 And they

  974. worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem

  975. Read it out loud together They returned

  976. to Jerusalem with great joy and were

  977. continually in the temple blessing God I

  978. want you to see that the whole gospel

  979. ends up in this that God's salvation

  980. brings great

  981. joy God's salvation will give you a joy

  982. that the world can never give you Those

  983. things young per people that you think

  984. that you got to have in your life that

  985. you want to build in your life the

  986. sports or the money or the education or

  987. the relationship Listen there's nothing

  988. that's going to fulfill you and satisfy

  989. you like the joy of knowing

  990. God through Jesus

  991. Christ Friends this is what Easter

  992. Sunday is about This is the reason

  993. there's joy

  994. Not only can he give you

  995. joy in eternity but listen he can give

  996. you joy

  997. now He can give you victory now

  998. Would you bow with me for prayer
