  1. uh this morning I'm going to invite you

  2. to uh take your outline out you have an

  3. outline bulletin there and uh we have a

  4. special message that's going to follow

  5. up after Sunday if you didn't get an

  6. outline there's some guys that are

  7. coming forward to give one to you if

  8. you're joining us online you can

  9. download it and that will help you a

  10. great deal before we jump into the

  11. sermon I want you to notice this does

  12. anybody have any idea what that

  13. is have you ever seen this before i I

  14. mean it's been a long time since we saw

  15. this right

  16. we've been in the midst of um a very

  17. very dry season and this is just a

  18. reminder you know pastors are called to

  19. keep up with what is going to affect the

  20. congregation right so when there's

  21. cultural things and when there's

  22. doctrinal things and theological things

  23. and winds in society that blow around

  24. pastors are called to warn of that well

  25. pastors are also called in South Florida

  26. to remind you what kind of Christian are

  27. you um are you a fair weather Christian

  28. or are you an all-weather Christristian

  29. right so notice that um and quite

  30. literally this morning we want to remind

  31. you of something that's about to happen

  32. do you know what this is this is

  33. rainfall totals in uh the state of

  34. Florida and uh what does it mean so

  35. we've we where are we right now we're

  36. we're right here right so it's been very

  37. dry what's about to happen in the next

  38. couple of

  39. weeks it's about to start raining so

  40. when you start seeing these people get

  41. all excited and remind Let me remind you

  42. let me remind you that the more

  43. inflammatory they can be um they turn up

  44. the red on the on the radar the more you

  45. click in or the more you watch so sales

  46. go up so that's called monetized weather

  47. now let me just remind you that Satan

  48. would love for you to be obsessed about

  49. the weather on Saturday night and Sunday

  50. morning just remind let me remind you

  51. it's going to start raining and as it

  52. starts raining let me remind you that we

  53. have carts and we have buses and we have

  54. everything else to help you get into

  55. worship without getting your hair all

  56. wet um or at least too wet and um I want

  57. to remind you that there are Christians

  58. all over the world that will walk miles

  59. and will avoid police and avoid

  60. terrorists and avoid all kinds of

  61. opposition to come and worship somewhere

  62. um in India and in North Africa and in

  63. the Middle East and in places of Asia

  64. there will be Christians worshiping in

  65. the midst of all those so please don't

  66. let a weatherman keep you away from

  67. worship right and don't let any streams

  68. so here's my theme no fear all right

  69. come on and we will enjoy uh worship in

  70. the coming months just make that up in

  71. your mind um even right now well last

  72. Sunday we did indeed enjoy Easter

  73. sunrise um as we recognize the

  74. resurrection of Christ and we looked at

  75. the amazing resurrection but we looked

  76. at more than just the resurrection last

  77. Sunday we looked at the first Easter

  78. Sunday and we didn't just look at what

  79. happened in the resurrection but we we

  80. saw how um Mary Magdalene and the other

  81. Marys ran back and told the apostles and

  82. then Peter and John came and ran uh to

  83. see the the empty tomb and then what

  84. happened in the afternoon of that first

  85. Easter where did Jesus show up in that

  86. afternoon

  87. that's right on the road to Emmas on the

  88. road to Emmas Jesus remember with me in

  89. Luke 24 we saw that he walked with those

  90. guys and he talked with those guys and

  91. he shared with them um his the meaning

  92. of his life from all of the Old

  93. Testament and then he showed up where

  94. that evening he showed up in an upper

  95. room where the disciples had met and

  96. were in fact meeting um the Bible tells

  97. us they were very afraid they didn't

  98. know what all had happened remember with

  99. me you and I know and we we think about

  100. Easter Sunday and it's all excitement

  101. it's all joy if you grew up in church it

  102. was put on your Sunday best it was liies

  103. and flowers and you know somehow mixed

  104. in with bunnies that lay eggs i don't

  105. know and by the way did you ever

  106. remember the disappointment that you had

  107. when you bit into that chocolate Easter

  108. bunny and it was

  109. hollow i still am scandalized by that

  110. so all that's you know whatever um but

  111. we somehow do make it quite a bit of a

  112. celebration and as Christians we should

  113. rightly celebrate the

  114. resurrection but as we go beyond that we

  115. want to see that there was a lot going

  116. on and that first Easter Sunday was not

  117. filled with all joy the scripture tells

  118. us that the disciples were trying to

  119. figure out what had happened they were

  120. trying to understand they were trying to

  121. believe some did and some were

  122. doubtful and all were pretty much afraid

  123. in part because their leader and friend

  124. the one who was closer than a brother

  125. had just been murdered and was no longer

  126. with them and so they were tr they were

  127. in this transition time and trying to

  128. figure all of that out and so this

  129. morning the title of the message and

  130. it's coming from John 21 is the poor

  131. disciples and the powerful gospel and so

  132. that's where we're going to be looking

  133. and studying this morning but notice on

  134. your outline here i want us to remind I

  135. I want us to remember this wednesday

  136. night by the way Wednesday nights we

  137. have a great time of Bible study up

  138. until the summer during the summer we

  139. take a little bit of break but

  140. throughout the year except for summer we

  141. have a great time of Bible study on

  142. Wednesday nights we have people that

  143. come all the way up from South Miami uh

  144. we have people that drive down from way

  145. up in north um north part of Broward it

  146. is worth it if I mean Sunday is not is

  147. not really enough uh in many ways for us

  148. to remain fueled we call it recharge but

  149. last Wednesday night we looked at a

  150. little bit of this so the Wednesday

  151. night crowd has a good foundation on

  152. this but very quickly I want you to see

  153. what we covered last Wednesday night

  154. because it really is a setup not only

  155. for today but it's also a setup for next

  156. Sunday um notice with me that the

  157. background here is that the resurrection

  158. and the ascension the time between the

  159. resurrection and the ascension was a

  160. very important time some of you are kind

  161. talking about what in the world do you

  162. mean well Jesus rose from the dead he

  163. started making appearances to his

  164. disciples not always with them and that

  165. lasted for how many days for 40 days so

  166. for 40 days Jesus is kind of popping in

  167. and popping out jesus is continuing to

  168. teach and to show in fact notice this

  169. list on your left hand side the whole

  170. chapter of Matthew 28 Mark 16 Luke 24

  171. which we read last Sunday chapters 20

  172. and 21 of John and the first 11 chapter

  173. the left first 11 verses of the book of

  174. Acts those are highlighting that now

  175. over to the right hand side and it's

  176. telling the narrative of that over to

  177. the right hand side we see the impact of

  178. the resurrection we see the impact

  179. referenced in many of the letters and

  180. there's many more than these these are

  181. just some prominent mentions of the

  182. resurrection in your New

  183. Testament now let's also remember this

  184. let's remember these appearances the

  185. appearances of Christ between the

  186. resurrection and the ascension and so

  187. here's kind of a list first it was to

  188. Mary Magdalene that's amazing to me

  189. jesus is first speaking after he rises

  190. from the dead to a woman a woman who had

  191. followed a woman who had been there a

  192. woman who had been delivered from much

  193. much of her sin and much of her life a

  194. woman who would have been an outcast

  195. Jesus has befriended and not only her

  196. but other women that were prominently

  197. there um for those who think that

  198. somehow God or Christianity or the

  199. truths of the Bible do not esteem women

  200. that's a very false narrative um the

  201. risen Lord first deals with women and we

  202. see that very often but then also to

  203. Peter um Peter and John run to the tomb

  204. what about this the two disciples on the

  205. Emmas road we looked at that last Sunday

  206. and he appears to 10 apostles without

  207. Thomas and then we see he appears again

  208. to 11 apostles with Thomas

  209. and we see he shows up the disciples at

  210. the Sea of Galilee and so we're going to

  211. see that this morning and the apostles

  212. plus 500 brethren also to James and then

  213. when he ascends to heaven to the

  214. apostles now that was over how many days

  215. that was over a 40-day

  216. period now I want you to see this and we

  217. looked at this in depth Wednesday night

  218. and it's it's a it's good enough and

  219. it's important enough i want you to see

  220. what is Jesus doing you know because so

  221. often think about this in your

  222. experience and in most churches we talk

  223. a lot about the crucifixion we talk a

  224. lot about the

  225. resurrection and then in many many

  226. churches we kind of ignore this time

  227. afterwards

  228. especially

  229. unfortunately as it leads up to the next

  230. massive event in the course of God's

  231. people and what is the next massive

  232. event to in the course of God's people

  233. the coming of the Holy Spirit

  234. no one would be saved if the Holy Spirit

  235. was not at work in the world today no

  236. one would believe in

  237. God the spirit works in us to draw us to

  238. God the spirit brings us to God and then

  239. the spirit gives us the strength and the

  240. faith to believe the spirit gives us the

  241. power to repent

  242. the spirit seals us for the day of

  243. redemption and so the Holy Spirit is

  244. massively important and good old Baptist

  245. because they don't want to be like the

  246. Pentecostals that seem to be running

  247. around will sometimes ignore the

  248. doctrines of the Holy Spirit and that's

  249. that's a very wrong thing to do we as

  250. bibleelving Christians should embrace

  251. and enrichly rely upon the power of

  252. God's presence through his spirit and so

  253. that was a very very big deal so I want

  254. you to notice a few things that Jesus is

  255. doing as he's appearing between the

  256. resurrection and the ascension and

  257. eventually the coming of the Holy Spirit

  258. fill these in what are the significance

  259. first of all the significance is he is

  260. confirming his resurrection to the

  261. disciples so when we see Jesus keep

  262. showing up when he's talking to

  263. individuals or he's talking to groups he

  264. is confirming his resurrection secondly

  265. we also see that he is um he is

  266. reconciling with his disciples you say

  267. why is he reconciling with them what's

  268. the

  269. problem my friends what do you remember

  270. they did

  271. they deserted

  272. him now it would be one thing if he was

  273. angry with them and that he left them

  274. aside but he wasn't angry with them but

  275. how did they feel

  276. i mean when you have really messed up

  277. and you've really disappointed a family

  278. member or a friend and you realize you

  279. own it you realize that you it was dumb

  280. what you did or you just missed it you

  281. fell short um maybe you sinned against

  282. them or maybe you forgot something or

  283. maybe you didn't stand with them and

  284. then you realize that you had done the

  285. wrong

  286. thing you know there's a there's a

  287. tendency to kind of avoid them and run

  288. away because of your

  289. shame now multiply thou out quite a bit

  290. you've just walked with Jesus for three

  291. years you've seen him do amazing things

  292. and then he is crucified and you abandon

  293. him in Peter's case you deny him you

  294. curse and deny him that you even knew

  295. him and so this desertion it had to be

  296. dealt with and we see that Jesus does

  297. that he reconciles with his disciples

  298. after the desertion what about the next

  299. one he number three he is preparing his

  300. disciples for their coming ministry so

  301. he's he's affirming his resurrection

  302. he's affirming his love for them he's

  303. reconciling with them and he's getting

  304. them ready for what's about to happen

  305. because it's about to be full game

  306. on just a few weeks away they're going

  307. to be standing before thousands and

  308. major things are going to happen and

  309. that plays into as well what we see here

  310. number four he commisss his disciples

  311. for their work in the kingdom of God

  312. it's the last thing how important are

  313. someone's last words very important very

  314. often and we see that these are his last

  315. words before he returns to heaven he

  316. sends us out now I want you to notice

  317. this passage and I hear you turning it

  318. over but look at the little box on the

  319. side there are few passages of scripture

  320. that are more grand and more glorious

  321. than Isaiah 55 and Isaiah 55 shows us

  322. God's grander plan this is a key verse

  323. for your entire biblical worldview the

  324. way you look at the whole world the way

  325. you look at all the events of your life

  326. and all of the events on the

  327. planet the way God works this is

  328. important god has a grander plan than

  329. ours look at verse eight it says "For my

  330. thoughts are not your thoughts neither

  331. are your ways my ways declares who?" The

  332. Lord for as high as the heavens are

  333. higher than the earth so are my ways

  334. higher than your ways and my thoughts

  335. than your thoughts so friends when you

  336. don't understand what God is doing when

  337. you don't understand why God did

  338. something either in the Bible or in your

  339. life you need to run to Isaiah

  340. 55 it will help you to see that the

  341. creator of the universe who has ultimate

  342. power over everything which we're going

  343. to see this morning he has a grand and

  344. glorious plan that he is working out and

  345. we need to come to trust him and rely

  346. upon him notice as we come to our

  347. passage this morning that there is a a

  348. context that we want to see and what

  349. you've been looking at and you may not

  350. realize this yet but this picture that

  351. is here that I'm using as the background

  352. is the Sea of

  353. Galilee this is the Sea of Galilee and

  354. this is standing on the western shore

  355. looking to the east much like we were on

  356. the western shore of the Atlantic last

  357. Sunday looking to the east and you can

  358. see the sunrise i've seen the sun rise

  359. on Galilee i didn't take this picture

  360. i'm thankful for somebody who did but

  361. notice that this is the context and I

  362. and I part of what I want you to see

  363. this is that as we've just been saying

  364. after Christ's death and resurrection he

  365. made occasional appearances to his

  366. disciples but notice this

  367. after the Passover festival was over of

  368. which Jesus was crucified in the midst

  369. remember that is Passover is the biggest

  370. biggest day of the year and that whole

  371. picture of this Christ is offered up as

  372. the final sacrifice as the true Passover

  373. um the Passover is over and the

  374. disciples have returned home just like

  375. people are going back to North Africa

  376. people are traveling back to Ethiopia

  377. people are traveling back to other areas

  378. in the Roman world the Jews were leaving

  379. Jerusalem well the disciples are leaving

  380. but they're leaving with a profound

  381. sense of

  382. uncertainty about what is to happen what

  383. is all this what is the last three years

  384. just meant and the events of the last

  385. three days just meant and so they're

  386. they're headed home now I want you to

  387. It's really good to have biblical

  388. backgrounds to me I just remember I've

  389. always been hungry to understand the

  390. context of the Bible and if you will get

  391. in your mind the layout of the Holy Land

  392. and layout of where all of this unfolds

  393. it'll help you understand the Bible more

  394. and it's really really cool um I first

  395. visited uh the Holy Land as a tourist

  396. and then there were times when I lived

  397. there and worked there um and so um I I

  398. love these places that I'm going to

  399. share but notice here here is Jerusalem

  400. that's ground zero for everything

  401. bethlehem just not far from it jericho

  402. ancient Jericho where the walls came

  403. down long before Christ um would have

  404. lived but notice the Dead Sea that is

  405. down here and all this is desert that

  406. famous fortress Msada that Herod built

  407. that is there that the Romans eventually

  408. overtook there's the Jordan River in the

  409. Jordan River comes down from what the

  410. Sea of Galilee this is the area that

  411. Jesus and much of his disciples were

  412. from this is where they were can any

  413. good thing come out of Nazareth i mean

  414. we we would hear that stated um in that

  415. whole area of Galilee but much of the

  416. New Testament in the Gospels occurred

  417. either around the lake of Galilee or

  418. down in the area of Jerusalem we see

  419. that we see them going to Jerusalem for

  420. the festivals and for the other things

  421. there here's yet another map i want you

  422. to see it same idea there's Galilee and

  423. um going on up now as we get into upper

  424. Galilee and lower Galilee you see

  425. Tiberius and Capernium is up here notice

  426. this right here you ever heard of that

  427. the Golan Heights that's a very

  428. strategic place even today because it is

  429. a high plane it's a high area um and

  430. it's it's uh very strategic for the

  431. protection of Israel um and a lot of

  432. battles have occurred there um in order

  433. to protect the whole area but here's

  434. Jordan over on this side but there's the

  435. Sea of Galilee i want you to see um a

  436. satellite image of it this is kind of

  437. cool um Sea of Galilee is a freshwater

  438. lake it's 7 and 12 or 7 miles wide and

  439. notice this it is 13 miles long or or

  440. tall however you want to say that north

  441. to south and then there's Tiberius as we

  442. mentioned and um we also see uh

  443. Capernaum up there much happened in the

  444. gospels in Capernaum and then um even

  445. Magdala this is would be Mary Magdalene

  446. that's where she would have been from

  447. and others so all around that area we

  448. see that now check this out

  449. i love it it's a beautiful place

  450. agricultural land with even arid um

  451. desert around the edges a lot of people

  452. have visited there a lot of people have

  453. taken photographs there it is a

  454. beautiful place and it is where Jesus

  455. was showing us the father the heart of

  456. God it's where he was living it out in

  457. modern day times I mean there's farms

  458. and there's homes and there's apartment

  459. buildings that are around that area in

  460. fact there's a beautiful church the

  461. Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy

  462. Apostles this is at Capernium looking

  463. off to the west uh the lake is clean um

  464. you can swim in it you can drink it um

  465. it's um it's been maintained quite well

  466. it's a modern tourist destination

  467. um in that day and time in fact there's

  468. tourism boats that will come and they'll

  469. go out there and they'll read the words

  470. of Christ um and they'll take tourists

  471. out on the boats i've been on these

  472. boats numerous times it's a it's a

  473. beautiful place but the boats that were

  474. there didn't look like these boats the

  475. boats that we read about in this passage

  476. of scripture look something more akin to

  477. this an artist's rendition of this and

  478. what were they doing they were often

  479. fishing they were often um uh in a it

  480. was just a much smaller type craft but

  481. they were fishing in the midst of what

  482. they were doing well one such boat was

  483. found down um petrified on the shore

  484. right near the shore in shallow water um

  485. some fishermen actually found it and

  486. then they did sonar that would go

  487. through the mud and they excavated it

  488. and they brought it out and it is in a

  489. museum sitting right there next to it

  490. you see the metal structure underneath

  491. it that's just to hold together a 2,000y

  492. old fishing

  493. boat so this is about the size of those

  494. boats that would have looked something

  495. like this

  496. so now you have a better context of what

  497. we're about to read early in the morning

  498. Jesus is showing up we don't know

  499. whether it was rough that morning or

  500. whether it was super calm like this but

  501. I want us to look and I want us to see

  502. and read this passage and I want us to

  503. gain all we can from it this morning for

  504. those of you who are not used to what

  505. our church does we really care about the

  506. context of a passage but not only the

  507. context but we care about the content

  508. that is there you don't need to hear

  509. what some pastor thinks you don't need

  510. to hear a highly motivational message of

  511. some sort what you need to hear is what

  512. God has given to us through the Holy

  513. Spirit and so we want to read this and

  514. then we want to pull some things out of

  515. it we want to expose what is there it's

  516. called expository teaching we want to

  517. see some things that are in this passage

  518. so notice with me here after this Jesus

  519. revealed himself again you see in verse

  520. one after this Jesus revealed himself

  521. again to the disciples by the Sea of

  522. Tiberius now you say Tiberias why is it

  523. called the Sea of Tiberius the the

  524. uh Galilee lake the Sea of Galilee or

  525. the Lake Knesset it's called numerous

  526. things not only in the New Testament but

  527. also in church or in human history so

  528. here it is called the sea of Tiberias um

  529. he revealed himself in this way so

  530. remember with me Jesus isn't constantly

  531. with them he's coming and going he's

  532. revealing himself he's getting them

  533. ready for him to be gone and for who to

  534. come

  535. the Holy Spirit to come so verse one

  536. after this reveals himself and he

  537. reveals himself in this way now we see

  538. the list of who was there verse two

  539. Simon Peter Thomas called the twin

  540. Nathaniel of Canaa in Galilee you see of

  541. Canaa in Galilee most of the disciples

  542. are from this area either the 12 or

  543. those who had been with him that were

  544. outside the 12 but Nathaniel of Canaa in

  545. Galilee the sons of Zebedee and two

  546. others we don't those aren't named and

  547. two others of his disciples were what

  548. together they were together verse three

  549. Simon Peter said to them "I'm going

  550. fishing." They said to him "We will go

  551. with you." They went out and got into

  552. the boat but that night they caught

  553. nothing so they returned to Galilee

  554. they're not sure what all is happening

  555. in their life they're not sure what the

  556. future is they're trying to figure it

  557. out days go by and they're going

  558. "Well what do we do?" And we see them

  559. they go back to what they knew because

  560. they didn't really understand what was

  561. next we

  562. have

  563. the the perspective of knowing what was

  564. next based upon this they didn't have

  565. that look at verse four

  566. just as day was

  567. breaking Jesus stood on the shore yet

  568. the disciples did not know that it was

  569. Jesus verse 5 Jesus said to them

  570. "Children do you have any

  571. fish?" They answered him "No." Now you

  572. say "Children do you have any fish

  573. that's awkward why would he call grown?"

  574. It's like when an older person would

  575. call out to someone and say "Hey young

  576. man you got any fish?" That's not I'm

  577. getting older so I know how that feels i

  578. look at a bunch of young guys say "Hey

  579. young," how do we say it today "hey

  580. dudes did you catch anything?" If I go

  581. out to Sawrass or Holiday Park or if I'm

  582. down in Keargo and guys come in I'll go

  583. "Dudes how did you do?" That's part of

  584. the picture that's there so he's saying

  585. to them he's he's referring to them he

  586. says "Children do you have any

  587. fish?" They answer him "What no." Verse

  588. six he said to them "Cast the net on the

  589. right side of the boat and you will find

  590. some." So they cast it and now they were

  591. not able to haul it in because of the

  592. quantity of

  593. fish that disciple whom Jesus loved now

  594. that's a humble way despite what it

  595. sounds that's the gospel that's the

  596. gospel writer John who's writing this so

  597. he's referring to himself in the third

  598. person here so he's saying and everybody

  599. kind of knew it everybody kind of knew

  600. that John was like one of the favorites

  601. but notice this that he said that

  602. disciples whom Jesus loved therefore

  603. said to Peter "It is the

  604. Lord." When Simon Peter heard that it

  605. was the Lord he put on his outer garment

  606. so he had not been wearing it for he was

  607. stripped for work and threw himself into

  608. the sea and the other disciples came in

  609. the boat dragging the net full of fish

  610. for they were not far from land but

  611. about 100 yards off so they're like

  612. upwards of a football field off from

  613. Jesus and Jesus says "Cast your net on

  614. the other side of the boat." They do it

  615. the net is so full they can't get it

  616. simon Peter is so excited that it's the

  617. Lord and we'll talk about that even more

  618. next Sunday he jumps into the water and

  619. he swims while they come in the

  620. boat verse

  621. 9 when they got out on land they saw a

  622. charcoal fire in place with fish laid

  623. out on it and bread and Jesus said to

  624. them "Bring some of the fish that you

  625. have just caught." Verse 11 so Simon

  626. Peter went aboard and hauled the net

  627. ashore full of large

  628. fish 153 of them and although And

  629. although there were so many the net was

  630. not torn so that's yet even another

  631. miracle verse 12 Jesus said to them

  632. "Come and have breakfast." Now none of

  633. the disciples dared ask him "Who are

  634. you?" They knew it was the Lord jesus

  635. came and took the bread and gave it to

  636. them and so with the

  637. fish this was now the third time that

  638. Jesus had revealed to the disciple jesus

  639. was revealed to the disciples after he

  640. was raised from the dead so this was the

  641. third time that he re revealed himself

  642. to a group of them we saw the other list

  643. on the front side of the page so imagine

  644. that they see they're in the boat

  645. they're off the shore they see him at a

  646. distance and it's early in the morning

  647. they come and they see a fire on the

  648. shore's edge and before very long the

  649. boats or the boat is there next to the

  650. shore and we see this beautiful picture

  651. of this well I want you to notice a few

  652. things from this text um there's some

  653. observations in it and um I want you to

  654. see a few things that are here number

  655. one I want you to see the poverty of the

  656. disciples i want you to see the poverty

  657. of the disciples what kind of poverty

  658. did they have first of all they had

  659. economic poverty they did not have some

  660. big fund that they could live on after

  661. Jesus had been crucified and rose from

  662. the dead what did they have to do they

  663. had to go back to work i mean the

  664. Apostle Peter says in verse three he

  665. says to them "I'm going fishing." and

  666. they said to him "We'll go with you."

  667. And they went out in the boat and there

  668. they go to go fish they're economically

  669. poor so when we think of the disciples

  670. we don't need to think that they were

  671. some elevated class that Jesus dealt

  672. with we see that Jesus deals and works

  673. through very often some of the most

  674. common people now Matthew was a tax

  675. collector which means he had quite a bit

  676. of status even though it wasn't a status

  677. that you would necessarily

  678. um that you would necessarily respect he

  679. was seen as a rather nefarious person um

  680. because he was a tax collector and they

  681. were usually cheats but he would have

  682. been from a higher level the fishermen

  683. were not

  684. so notice this not only that but we see

  685. their political poverty where did they

  686. go back to Galilee was Galilee a

  687. powerful place politically no it the

  688. nearest power center to them was Rome

  689. and they didn't excuse me was Jerusalem

  690. and then after that it was where rome i

  691. mean that was what was ruling the empire

  692. the disciples went back to their

  693. nowhere so when we when we start to see

  694. who does God use it's it's not that he

  695. showed up in Rome it's not that he

  696. showed up in Athens it's not that he

  697. showed up in Istanbul he didn't show up

  698. in Mecca he didn't show up in New York

  699. or

  700. Washington jesus shows up in a place

  701. that is going to allow him to show his

  702. glory not man's glory how about letter

  703. C they were physically impoverished they

  704. they they didn't have great power even

  705. physically in fact look with me in verse

  706. four well in verse three look what it

  707. says in verse three and they said "We

  708. will go with you." And they went out and

  709. got in the boat and that night they did

  710. what they caught

  711. nothing so phys they're impover they're

  712. not even good fishermen for crying out

  713. loud just as day breaking Jesus stood at

  714. the shore yet the disciples did not know

  715. it was him and he said to them "Children

  716. do you have any fish?" They answered

  717. no so we we see that there's a a

  718. physical weakness to them and

  719. limitations upon

  720. them letter D there was a moral and

  721. spiritual poverty that they had they

  722. realized that they had deserted the Lord

  723. they didn't know what to do next now

  724. they had all of this stuff that Jesus

  725. had taught them

  726. inside it was all there but they didn't

  727. yet know how to use it they had come to

  728. know Jesus they had come to hear his

  729. teaching they knew what he stood for and

  730. they were they were seeking to fully

  731. understand and process that he really

  732. was the Messiah and he just died for the

  733. sins of the world but they're still in

  734. the process of all of that coming into

  735. their full processing and their full

  736. understanding but despite all of that

  737. they just go back to

  738. fishing so we see that there's something

  739. still greatly lacking in them they are

  740. impoverished notice John 15 perhaps this

  741. would have resonated in their minds a

  742. couple of years earlier Jesus was

  743. teaching and look what he says to them

  744. and we we know that this is in their

  745. minds because eventually John would

  746. write it down look what it says in verse

  747. four abide in me and I in you as the

  748. branch cannot bear fruit by itself

  749. unless it abides in the vine neither can

  750. you unless you abide in me verse five

  751. and I as we read verse 5 let me just say

  752. to

  753. you I remember as a young man after I

  754. had finally started to realize man

  755. everything I've been taught is

  756. true god is is not only real but God is

  757. I cannot deny that he's working in my

  758. life and I was coming to realize that I

  759. loved that but in the process of that I

  760. remember I started really reading my

  761. Bible and I'll never forget as an

  762. 18-year-old when I

  763. read this verse this verse verse five it

  764. struck me and hit me like a ton of

  765. bricks look at verse 5 i am the vine you

  766. are the branches whoever abides in me

  767. and I in him he it is that bears much

  768. fruit and then here's the line that got

  769. me for apart from me you can do what

  770. nothing nothing and I just remember

  771. staring at that on the page i I remember

  772. the moment and I remember just thinking

  773. about that for the next few

  774. weeks apart from me you can do

  775. nothing i can't overcome my own sin i

  776. can't change my personality

  777. i can't do i mean there's little tweaks

  778. and adjustments you can do but there is

  779. nothing eternal jesus is speaking on in

  780. a scale of eternity on the things that

  781. truly matter and I started to realize

  782. without Jesus I cannot change all of the

  783. things that need to be changed well the

  784. second thing so that's the first one the

  785. poverty of the disciples i want you to

  786. see the second one i want you to see the

  787. diversity first of all we'll just look

  788. at the diversity of the disciples and um

  789. and even though we're just looking at

  790. the fisherman we're not even talking

  791. about Matthew here and we get this from

  792. verse two look up there verse two so it

  793. was Simon Peter it was Thomas called the

  794. twin Nathaniel of Canaa and Galilee and

  795. sons of Zebedee and two others of his

  796. disciples were together and so sons of

  797. Zebedee this is James and John so first

  798. of all notice here the disciples are

  799. incredibly diverse first of all there is

  800. passionate impulsive

  801. Peter i mean he is passionate this is a

  802. man who in every time he opens his mouth

  803. it is passion

  804. and then I mean kind of just the

  805. opposite of that is letter B

  806. insightful deep artistic John the

  807. youngest of the

  808. disciples and so whereas Peter is going

  809. off all the time John is

  810. watching and John is noticing and John

  811. is processing and while Peter is far

  812. more basic in his pursuit and

  813. understanding of things listen to this

  814. john in fact is processing far more on a

  815. philosophical

  816. level how about

  817. Thomas maybe we could say he was

  818. pessimistic and he was doubting i mean

  819. he was just bold enough to say what

  820. everybody else was thinking when he said

  821. "I won't believe it till I see

  822. it." So there's Thomas he's doubting and

  823. then talk about diversity we don't even

  824. know about some of the others there's

  825. little known about them but yet here

  826. they all

  827. are in fact if you look at it look what

  828. it says in verse two do you see up there

  829. in verse two it says "Simon Peter Thomas

  830. called the twin Nathaniel um the sons of

  831. Zebedee and two others of his

  832. disciples." Underline that or circle

  833. those last two words of that sentence

  834. and they were

  835. what and they were

  836. together so even though they're so

  837. diverse and they're so different they

  838. were together

  839. and so what I want you to see here is

  840. not only the diversity of the disciples

  841. but I want you to see the unity of the

  842. disciples they are together they're

  843. together in fact my goodness they're in

  844. the same

  845. boat they're not all different in

  846. different boats they're in the same boat

  847. though they are so diverse

  848. now I want you to just look at that

  849. slide and think about that in the

  850. context of the body of Christ our

  851. church we're so

  852. diverse but the strength is not our

  853. diversity the strength is in our unity

  854. amen now I want to say to you in the

  855. last 40 or 50 years in America we have

  856. exalted diversity and nearly destroyed

  857. our

  858. society yes it's true it's fine that

  859. we're all from different places it's

  860. fine that we're different and it's fine

  861. that that we have a very But friends you

  862. don't emphasize diversity the devil

  863. loves to divide what you should talk

  864. about is

  865. unity what you should talk about are not

  866. the things that we have that are so

  867. different what we should celebrate is

  868. our unity the things that we have in our

  869. hearts that are the same and this is

  870. very very very true for the body of

  871. Christ and we see it that God is a God

  872. of

  873. unity god is a God of reconciliation

  874. he's a God of being together in fact

  875. notice with me this last passage that is

  876. right there on your outline 1

  877. Corinthians 12 through13 is so critical

  878. for us paul is writing and he writes in

  879. verse 12 for just as the body is what

  880. one and has many

  881. members so if the human body has many

  882. members has fingers has hands has elbows

  883. has arms legs has ears so the body the

  884. human body has many different

  885. members and all the members of the body

  886. though many are what one

  887. body so it is with Christ can you put a

  888. box around that phrase so it is with

  889. Christ because that's that's the lynch

  890. pin of

  891. this in Christ verse 13 for in one

  892. spirit we were all baptized into one

  893. body now you could talk about physical

  894. baptism but this is really a picture of

  895. spiritual baptism what does baptism mean

  896. to immerse we're all immersed in Christ

  897. we're covered up in Christ there's no

  898. more us sticking out above the surface

  899. we we are completely covered in Christ

  900. we're covered in his death and we're

  901. covered in his resurrection

  902. this is the beauty of

  903. it and so notice this in verse 13 for in

  904. one spirit we were all baptized into one

  905. body Jews and Greeks slaves and free and

  906. we were all made to drink of what one

  907. spirit so this is the unifying

  908. force is the Holy Spirit that's what

  909. brings us to God and brings us to each

  910. other

  911. so look at this how many times is one in

  912. this

  913. passage just circle them as we go for

  914. just as the body is one and has many

  915. members all the members of the body

  916. though many are one body so it is with

  917. Christ for in one spirit we were all

  918. baptized into one body Jews or Greek

  919. slaves and free and are all made to

  920. drink of what one spirit what do you

  921. think the emphasis of these two verses

  922. are unity that's the picture you see we

  923. have one body and we have one Lord one

  924. body one Lord and that is what brings us

  925. to the unity that God has given us so

  926. the emphasis is not on what our

  927. differences are as Jews or Greeks or

  928. free or slave or u Anglo or Hispanic or

  929. African-American or Eastern European or

  930. Asian or I don't want to leave anybody

  931. out native American I mean you name it

  932. we we come from all of these different

  933. backgrounds that's not what we emphasize

  934. what we

  935. emphasize is the unity that we have as

  936. redeemed children of God and so we see

  937. that in this passage it's pretty

  938. beautiful notice the next part here on

  939. page three see not only the poverty of

  940. the disciples and the diversity and

  941. unity of them but number three we see

  942. the power of the Lord

  943. title of this message is the poor

  944. disciples and the power of the gospel

  945. you could also call it the power of the

  946. Lord so notice this in verse 1 and four

  947. i want you to see this and after Jesus

  948. had revealed himself again so here it is

  949. jesus is revealing himself again to the

  950. disciples this is his

  951. power you don't have the power to pop in

  952. and out but Jesus does he has the power

  953. to be anywhere all the time in the grand

  954. sense of the trinity we know that the

  955. trinity is omnipresent he's everywhere

  956. all the time but when it comes to this

  957. issue of humanity and him bringing

  958. himself into humanity we see his power

  959. to visibly show up in our

  960. lives the power of the Lord in his word

  961. and in his spirit and in this case in

  962. his actual presence and we see that

  963. letter A the power of his pursuit and

  964. presence you see he's still pursuing the

  965. disciples he came and got them the first

  966. time and now he's coming and getting

  967. them the second time this is beautiful

  968. look at verse four just as day was

  969. breaking Jesus stood on the shore yet

  970. the disciples did not know that it was

  971. him did you know that sometimes Jesus is

  972. right there next to you and you don't

  973. even realize it

  974. there's times in your life where you're

  975. thinking everything's bad this is all

  976. messed up i have no friends or I'm a

  977. dork or whatever it is or maybe you're

  978. prideful and you think everybody else is

  979. terrible and you're great or whatever it

  980. is but eventually you come to realize in

  981. your in your limited

  982. view that God is right there with you

  983. when you've seemed so

  984. alone not only is he there in his

  985. pursuit and his presence of us but look

  986. at letter B we see the power of his

  987. words look at verse 5 jesus said to them

  988. "Children do you have any fish?" They

  989. answered him "No." Now remember what I

  990. said last Sunday jesus often asks

  991. questions it's not that he doesn't know

  992. the answer wednesday night we talked

  993. about this again it's not that he

  994. doesn't know the answer he's helping us

  995. understand things

  996. in fact there's a lot of times as

  997. parents that your child comes up to you

  998. and says "Mom I don't know how to open

  999. it." Now mom can either take the thing

1000. and go "Open it." Or mom can say "Okay

1001. well let's think about this what do you

1002. see on the right hand side?" Well I see

1003. a little button oh well why would that

1004. button maybe be there you see mom is not

1005. that she doesn't know why the button

1006. would be there what is she

  1007. doing she's leading the six-year-old to

1008. think about why is the button on the top

1009. of the box well the button is on maybe

1010. on the top of the box so that if you

1011. push it the top of the box will open

  1012. whatever it

1013. is you see Jesus often does that with us

1014. in fact you'll be driving along down I95

1015. or somewhere and you'll be thinking

1016. about something you better be thinking

1017. about the traffic if you're on 95

1018. you'll be going through some aspect of

1019. your life and you'll be thinking about

  1020. something and then you're asking a

1021. question and let me tell you that a wise

  1022. person asks

1023. questions and God is not afraid of you

  1024. asking any

1025. question god has given you a mind to use

1026. and so you ask a question and then when

1027. you begin to seek the answer hopefully

1028. what you begin to realize the answers

1029. are from is from the master over all

1030. things look in verse four or in verse 5

1031. jesus said children do you have any fish

1032. they answered no he said to them cast

1033. your net on the right side of the boat

1034. and you will find some so he knew what

1035. he was doing and I would love to know

1036. and someday maybe we can ask him Lord

1037. when you did that out in the Sea of

1038. Galilee I mean how did you caused those

1039. 153 fish to come up next to the right

  1040. side of their

  1041. boat you

1042. know you know the the

1043. the school of fish go over to the right

1044. side of the boat and there they are

  1045. waiting to be caught

1046. that disciple whom Jesus loved therefore

1047. said to Peter "It is the Lord." But that

1048. only happens he recognized it after he

1049. saw the power of what had happened cast

1050. your net on the right side of the boat

1051. so they cast it and now they h were not

1052. able to haul it in because of the

1053. quantity of fish and then they realize

1054. he has this is the one who has power

1055. over all things we've seen this

1056. before so this is the power of the Lord

1057. he has the power over all

  1058. things what about letter

1059. C the power of his loving care i love

1060. these verses in nine look at in verse 9

1061. when they got to the land they saw a

1062. charcoal fire in place with fish laid

1063. out on it and bread and Jesus said

1064. "Bring some of the fish that you have

1065. caught." Verse 11 so Simon Peter went

1066. aboard and hauled the net ashore full of

1067. large fish 153 of them and although

1068. there were so many the net wasn't torn

1069. and Jesus said to them "Come have

1070. breakfast." Can you put a big circle

  1071. around that come have

1072. breakfast i want you to see

1073. this the loving care of the Lord

1074. come have breakfast come be with me you

1075. see nothing's changed he was eating with

1076. them before and now he comes to eat with

1077. them again he's coming what what what do

1078. you do who do you eat

1079. with you don't usually eat with

1080. strangers who do you eat with you eat

1081. with people that you're close

1082. to in some of the most intimate settings

1083. that we can have in our life in this in

1084. this day is having a meal

1085. together and here we see that the Lord

1086. is revealing to them his

1087. reconciliation his heart and he's caring

  1088. for

1089. them we see the loving heart of God he

  1090. prepares breakfast for them

1091. this is beautiful not only do we see the

1092. power of his loving care but letter D in

1093. all of this we see the power of his

  1094. grace and his

1095. forgiveness in verse one Jesus reveals

1096. himself in verse 14 look at down in

1097. verse 14 this was now the third time

1098. that Jesus was revealed to the disciples

1099. after he was raised from the dead you

1100. see he had grace toward them and

  1101. forgiveness toward them

1102. constantly and I want you to think about

1103. this what this means for you and for me

1104. so we have some implications and some

1105. applications and I I I want you to think

1106. about that this week i want you to think

1107. about this passage maybe this afternoon

1108. go home and read this passage again and

1109. think about this talk about this with

1110. your family talk about this with your

1111. kids notice here with me the first of

1112. all implication is without Christ we can

1113. do nothing that is eternal we can do

1114. nothing that is eternal john 15 tells us

1115. that but here we see it in the disciples

1116. we decide see a physical example of even

1117. something that isn't necessarily eternal

1118. and them catching fish that day but it's

1119. a vivid description you know sometimes

1120. God will remind you of things in your

1121. physical life that represent a spiritual

1122. reality i mean things that just kind of

1123. happen i I have two or three things that

1124. I've noticed recently um that that

1125. happen and I'm like "There it is again

  1126. that's that's amazing."

1127. How many of you have a box or a drawer

  1128. in your house with

  1129. cords

  1130. chargers USB

1131. cables how many of you have some place

1132. in your house where there's a bunch of

1133. cords now when you go to get one of

  1134. those cords out what

1135. happens they all come out

1136. somehow Marcy has said this for the last

1137. 20 years over and over again she will go

  1138. to a bag or she'll go to a box or she'll

1139. go over to a drawer and she'll pull

1140. something out and here's this cord and

  1141. it's just this

  1142. big I don't know what to call it a a a

1143. nest of cords and you're trying to get

1144. out and every single time she does that

1145. she holds it up and she said this is

1146. sin this is what sin will do to your

  1147. life

  1148. it'll entangle everything it'll

1149. complicate everything sin is visible

1150. example right here this is

1151. sin sin just messes us up and entangles

  1152. us

1153. you think you're getting away with it

1154. but you're just really making a bigger

  1155. mess

1156. so in a small way the fish are this

  1157. physical example to these

1158. guys that you fished all night and you

1159. didn't catch anything and then Jesus

1160. says "Throw it on the other side." And

1161. they can't even haul it in it's the

1162. biggest catch they've ever had it is

  1163. amazing

1164. so we need to realize in our lives that

1165. without Christ we can do nothing that

1166. really matters number two God's people

  1167. are incredibly

1168. diverse and this is all for his glory

  1169. and his

1170. purposes you see it's it's our diversity

1171. linked with our unity that reveals his

1172. goodness that he can bring that which is

1173. very different together he does that

1174. with man and wife that which is very

1175. very different he brings together and

1176. it's a good thing when the when um a man

1177. has found a wife he has found a good

1178. thing this is a beautiful purpose of God

1179. in that how about number three god's

1180. people must learn to three things to

  1181. recognize

  1182. trust and obey

1183. him that's what God's people must learn

1184. to do now I've made

  1185. recognize bright lime

1186. green because we've often heard you need

1187. to trust and obey somebody came to me

1188. the other day and they were new to the

1189. life of our church maybe new to walking

1190. with the Lord i'm I'm not exactly sure

1191. but they said you know a few weeks ago

1192. we sang a song and that song was one

1193. that you said was an old hymn and it was

1194. called Trust and Obey and he said I have

1195. to tell you I've not been able to escape

1196. that song i've been thinking about the

1197. truth of that song that there's no other

1198. way to be happy in Christ but to trust

1199. and obey trust and obey there's no other

1200. way to walk with the Lord

1201. but part of trusting and

1202. obeying is recognizing the Lord now the

1203. disciples were on the boat they were 300

1204. ft from the shore about 100 yards from

1205. the shore and there's this guy in the

1206. early morning light standing on the

1207. shore and he calls out to them over the

  1208. water "Have you caught

1209. anything?" And no they hadn't caught

1210. anything no well throw the net on the

  1211. other

1212. side they do the net we can't even pull

1213. it in the boat and what does John do

  1214. it's the

1215. Lord you see the power of what God is

1216. doing around them reveals this is the

1217. Lord i want to say to you that you need

  1218. to learn to

1219. recogn himself is his word

1220. if you will be in the word of God listen

1221. to this you will recognize the Lord not

1222. only in his word but you will recognize

1223. the Lord in this life the more you know

1224. of God and the way he works you'll start

1225. to see this is the Lord he's at work

1226. this is what he's calling me to do the

1227. more you're in the word you will know

1228. that you cannot know his will if you do

  1229. not know his word

1230. don't wait for the feeling the spine

1231. chill you know the strange design of the

1232. clouds or something like that in order

1233. to interpret the will of the Lord what

1234. you need to know is what he says and how

1235. he works and the more you study his word

1236. the more you dive into his word and see

1237. the riches of it and see his values in

1238. his heart the more you know what he

  1239. wants

1240. and so we must learn to recognize and

1241. then trust and obey the the Lord now

1242. when we do that notice what I put below

1243. that when we do there will be miraculous

1244. results and blessing in your life that's

1245. what the disciples saw they trusted they

  1246. they didn't say

1247. "No you don't know what you're talking

1248. about we've been out here all night

1249. there's no fish around the

1250. boat that's not what they yelled back to

1251. Jesus it doesn't say that they said

1252. anything to Jesus but they were

1253. desperate enough they thought "What do

1254. we have to lose throw the net on the

1255. other side." So they obey the Lord they

1256. throw the net on the other side and

  1257. there's a catch that they can't take in

1258. so this is this is really beautiful look

  1259. at number

1260. four it is the it is only the power of

1261. Christ and his gospel his tr truth his

1262. words that can change the

1263. world it's only him it's not you know

1264. you're not going to do it on your own

1265. the church isn't going to do it on its

  1266. own

1267. what we see in this text is that the

1268. word of God is what brings powerful

1269. change now I know you're trying to pack

1270. up but before you do that I want you to

1271. think deeply about these four

  1272. things look at

1273. them without Christ we can do nothing

1274. god's people are incredibly diverse for

  1275. a

1276. reason number three God's people learn

1277. to recognize trust and obey and look at

1278. this number four it's only the power of

1279. Christ and his gospel that can change

  1280. the

1281. world there was a pastor who understood

1282. this very well and he impacted the world

1283. his name was Pastor J.C riyle he

1284. lived 125 years ago would have been his

1285. death he's from England about 150 years

1286. ago here's what he wrote and what he

1287. preached god doesn't need all your

  1288. powerful talents

1289. your learned education or your great

1290. holiness what he needs is someone who

1291. what loves him and obeys him with that

1292. he will change the world let's stand

  1293. together for prayer
