  1. This morning again we are coming to

  2. first Peter and it's kind of

  3. interesting. Three weeks ago we looked

  4. at a sermon because of where first Peter

  5. goes that started something started a

  6. min a mini season a minieries is what I

  7. mean by that. Three weeks ago we looked

  8. at this sermon submission in marriage a

  9. doozy. Remember we've talked about

  10. submission to government submission at

  11. work and then we look at submission in

  12. marriage. Well, that's a hot tamalei. In

  13. fact, what's interesting about this is,

  14. and I've shared with this with with you

  15. this a little bit, several weeks ago,

  16. six or eight weeks ago, the pastors were

  17. talking and praying as we often do, and

  18. we were just talking about all the fact

  19. that our world is truly lost when it

  20. comes to marriage. We've we've just seen

  21. a lot happen and that has found its way

  22. into many churches. It's found its way

  23. into our church. We struggle in our

  24. family life. We struggle in our

  25. marriages very often. And um we were

  26. just deeply burdened for this and we

  27. started looking at the need for us to do

  28. an emphasis on this. And then while we

  29. were sitting there, Pastor Ben said,

  30. "Now wait a minute. In just a couple of

  31. weeks, we're going to be at 1 Peter

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  32. chapter 3. And as we were talking and

  33. praying about it, we just said we need

  34. to take a little bit of time. It goes

  35. right with what our our study in First

  36. Peter, but we want to look a little bit

  37. more in depth. Now, why this miniseries

  38. in First Peter? Why? This isn't on your

  39. notes. This is for free. So, look at

  40. number one. The first one is this. At

  41. this present moment, our families, our

  42. marriages

  43. need help. And that's right here at

  44. Sheran Hills. That's the people in this

  45. room. That is us. Um, you know, wherever

  46. you are in your marriage, I'll guarantee

  47. you it can improve. Um, you might say,

  48. "Well, we're at the top of the world.

  49. We're doing better than we've ever

  50. done." Well, praise the Lord. I'll

  51. guarantee it can improve. But you know

  52. what? There's a lot of people who would

  53. say, "We're not at the top of the world.

  54. We're not where um uh we would like to

  55. be and we have growth. We have we have

  56. real need to work on these issues. Maybe

  57. you're young people. You're you're a

  58. young person and you're looking toward

  59. this. I we are very concerned about

  60. everything the world is teaching you

  61. about marriage. And so we want to we

  62. want to recognize that. And what we've

  63. seen is number two is this. For 65

  64. years, marriage has been under a frontal

  65. assault, that means a front-on attack

  66. since the 1960s.

  67. So when we saw the the love generation a

  68. revolution, the free love movement, when

  69. we saw all of the moorings of our

  70. society begin to shake at even the

  71. familial level,

  72. um we saw there was there was new ideas

  73. that are being popularized and from that

  74. time on that has been a real issue. um

  75. to the point where we don't even want to

  76. go into all the various legislation that

  77. if my grandparents were still alive,

  78. they would be absolutely shocked that

  79. our society is grappling with these

  80. issues. How about number three?

  81. For over 100 years, the re since the

  82. 1920s,

  83. for over 100 years, the real meaning of

  84. marriage has been forgotten or lost to

  85. our society. Amen.

  86. around the 1920s and by the way there

  87. were some things that were going on in

  88. the 1920s philosophically

  89. um and theologically going back to the

  90. 1870s where as you see Dar Charles

  91. Darwin's ideas come to prominence as you

  92. see the scientific age turn into the

  93. industrial age and all of that in higher

  94. education we saw a great liberalization

  95. of Christian theology ology. There was

  96. more and more higher academics that

  97. rejected the Bible as the word of God.

  98. Many of you know that one of my favorite

  99. and most important mentors from history

  100. is a man named Charles Heden Spurgeon.

  101. He was a pastor in London, England. He

  102. began preaching when he was 16 years old

  103. and he was known as a powerful preacher

  104. for the word of God. And as he lived his

  105. life and became the most popular pastor

  106. in the world, was preaching to thousands

  107. and that five to 6,000 people at various

  108. points in his ministry.

  109. He saw that the pulpit of England were

  110. leaving the Bible. He saw that many

  111. pulpits in England were going the way of

  112. modernism. They were going the way of

  113. the scientific age. They were going the

  114. way of philosophy over theology.

  115. And the philosophy instead of being

  116. informed by proper theology, theology

  117. was being informed by secular

  118. philosophy. So whether it was Carl Young

  119. or Sigman Freud or Charles Darwin or

  120. many of the other movements at that

  121. time, we saw that many many pulpits

  122. became ashamed

  123. of the Bible.

  124. Well, this was what Charles Haden

  125. Spurgeon would call the great downgrade.

  126. It was called the great downgrade as he

  127. preached against it, as he wrote against

  128. it, as he wrote books. He started a

  129. pastor's school for it. And so there was

  130. a great push back and it was Charles

  131. Haden hadn't dar excuse me Charles not

  132. haden Darwin Charles Haden Spurgeon who

  133. pushed and pushed until there was

  134. actually a breakthrough

  135. of pastors being trained in proper

  136. theology. Once again,

  137. he went down to the French Riviera

  138. in and dealt with depression.

  139. Um, eventually he died in his 50s.

  140. Um, a young man to die in his 50s and he

  141. was sadly missed but his legacy lives

  142. on. So for over a hundred years number

  143. three there for over a hundred me years

  144. the real meaning of marriage as as those

  145. false ideas began to take over the real

  146. meaning of marriage had been lost. So

  147. that is why we are taking some time and

  148. as a church we always want to take some

  149. time to remember the issue of marriage.

  150. We want to remember the beauty of

  151. marriage. And that's why we as we do

  152. that, as we look and we remember God's

  153. design in this, not just a wedding

  154. ceremony, but as we look at the meaning

  155. of it all, we want to hold on to the

  156. gospel and remember what is the covenant

  157. nature of marriage. So, what I've done

  158. this morning is this because this is so

  159. important. Um, and I know that many of

  160. you uh were here last week, some of you

  161. were not. What I'm going to do is I'm

  162. going to quickly fly through the very

  163. important message from last week. And

  164. the reason I want to do that is because

  165. it always helps for you to see and hear

  166. it again a little bit, but also for

  167. those who haven't been here, because the

  168. message today hinges on the message from

  169. last week. So I want you to see that. I

  170. want you to remember what we looked at

  171. last week. Now as we do this, the

  172. pastors and I were meeting on Tuesday.

  173. You know, Tuesdays we have staff

  174. meeting, the pastors meet before that.

  175. And one of the things that we do is we

  176. pray and as we talk and we pray for you

  177. is we evaluate whoever preached the last

  178. Sunday that we evaluate the sermon. So

  179. we all talk about it and we we pray

  180. about it. Um, well, one of the things

  181. that Pastor William mentioned this last

  182. Sunday or excuse me, this last Tuesday

  183. was he said Sunday's message flipped

  184. something upside down for him.

  185. He said, "It's true that I grew up

  186. mainly and almost exclusively

  187. thinking about marriage as completely

  188. about a man and a woman.

  189. two people coming along. I mean, when

  190. you think about, well, what else would

  191. you think of?

  192. Marriage is between a man and a woman

  193. and it's about this earthly life. God

  194. gave us marriage. But

  195. when we've been when we looked at this

  196. last Sunday, he said it became evident

  197. to me that the far bigger marriage,

  198. the far bigger point that God is making

  199. to us is not between just merely a man

  200. and a woman, but it's between heaven and

  201. earth. It's between God and his people.

  202. It's between Christ as the bridegroom

  203. and God's people, the church.

  204. That is the bigger marriage. You say,

  205. "Well, how could how could we think that

  206. way? How how could we see that?" Well,

  207. we can only see that by faith. You know,

  208. faith is the assurance of things hoped

  209. for, the conviction of things what

  210. >> unseen.

  211. And so when we think about marriage

  212. between a man and a woman, that's seen.

  213. It's it's not fully about faith.

  214. But when we study the Bible, as we did

  215. and as we're going to remember this last

  216. from this last Sunday, when we study the

  217. Bible, we see that it's all about a

  218. wedding.

  219. It's all about a marriage.

  220. That's the whole message of salvation.

  221. It's about a marriage. It's a marriage

  222. between God and his people.

  223. >> Amen.

  224. >> That's what the scripture reveals

  225. beginning in the first chapter of the

  226. Bible and going all the way to the last

  227. chapter of the Bible. This is the

  228. overarching message

  229. of the Bible is about a marriage. And

  230. it's much bigger than a marriage between

  231. two humans. It's a marriage between an

  232. eternal God and all of his redeemed

  233. people. This is amazing. And so we start

  234. to see that this this marriage has a

  235. covenant. That's what it is. It's it's a

  236. covenant. Notice here with me and let's

  237. go very quickly. Get ready. Warm up your

  238. pen. We want to see this. Roman numeral

  239. number one is the foundational truths

  240. about marriage from Genesis 1 and 2. We

  241. looked at that again. Letter A. Marriage

  242. is prefall. It's pre sin. Therefore,

  243. what did we say? It's part of the what?

  244. The very good creation. Very good. Some

  245. of you got that. Some of you remembered

  246. that it was good. Marriage was prior to

  247. sin. It was prior to the curse. There

  248. are three covenantal actions from

  249. Genesis 2:24. Notice that passage in

    Genesis 2:24

  250. front of you. Look what it says there.

  251. Therefore, a man shall leave. And go

  252. ahead and go to the next slide there,

  253. guys. Let them see it. Okay. Therefore,

  254. a man shall leave his father and mother

  255. and hold fast to his wife, and they

  256. shall become what? One flesh. So, we

  257. said, leave, cleave, and one flesh. This

  258. is at the very beginning. This is God's

  259. plan. Letter C, Adam's first words upon

  260. seeing Eve were covenantal poetry. He

  261. looks at her and he says, "Wow, this at

  262. last is bone of my bones and flesh of my

  263. flesh. She shall be called woman because

  264. she was taken out of man." This is the

  265. first human speech recorded. This is the

  266. first words that humans are recorded to

  267. have said and it had to do with

  268. covenant. It had to do with covenant

  269. marriage. This is amazing. It's a

  270. confession of covenant union. Roman

  271. numeral number two marriage as a

  272. covenant not a mere what do you remember

  273. what we said? It's a covenant not a mere

  274. contract. contract protects two people

  275. from one another that while allowing

  276. them to do something a covenant binds

  277. two people to one another and we see

  278. that through proverbs and Malachi and in

  279. fact many many other passages there's

  280. four covenant signs um in Old Testament

  281. marriage it was the bride price the

  282. written document the cup of wine and the

  283. declaration and witness the public

  284. declaration and witnesses you know you I

  285. I wanted to emphasize that last point

  286. more last week. You you don't marriage

  287. is a public thing. It's it's before

  288. others. In fact, the Old Testament

  289. required that. You couldn't be married

  290. to somebody in private and nobody know

  291. that you were married. I told you about

  292. my grandmother um getting off running

  293. off and getting married and then coming

  294. home. They didn't tell anybody for a

  295. while until later. Um I I highly do not

  296. recommend that kids don't do that.

  297. Please don't do that. Um you need to

  298. enter into that with great due course

  299. and preparation. But um it is a public

  300. thing. And just like this,

  301. your rel to this your relationship to

  302. God is certainly personal,

  303. but it's not private.

  304. your relationship with God. Jesus, his

  305. relationship to you was very personal.

  306. But listen to this. It was not private.

  307. Jesus died publicly for you. He died for

  308. the whole world to see. And so we are

  309. called to live publicly for him. So we

  310. are called to be not ashamed of him, not

  311. in private, not in obscurity and

  312. anonymity. We are called to represent

  313. and to see that relationship as a public

  314. relationship. Look at the next part

  315. here. Roman numeral number three. You've

  316. already turned to page two. The covenant

  317. pattern. And what do we see throughout

  318. the Bible? What we see is God's

  319. marriages to Israel. You say marriages,

  320. you mean multiple. Oh, how many times

  321. did they break his covenant? How many

  322. times did he circle back with them? How

  323. many times did he listen to this did he

  324. reestablish

  325. another covenant with them? He didn't go

  326. listen remember this. He didn't say,

  327. "Okay, I'm done with the Jews. I'm

  328. moving on to the Phoenetians. I'm going

  329. on to the Greeks. I'm going on to the

  330. Romans." That's not what he did. He

  331. stayed with the people that he had

  332. originally promised a covenant to. This

  333. is amazing. And so we see this um uh

  334. letter A, Yahweh, that's God right above

  335. Yahweh. God, that's his personal name.

  336. Yahweh repeatedly describes himself as

  337. Israel's husband. We see that there's

  338. many other passages besides these that

  339. are here. But you see that look at

  340. Isaiah 54:5.

    Isaiah 54:5

  341. For your maker is your husband. That's

  342. maybe my favorite one. the one who made

  343. you says I I am your husband. I am with

  344. you. Um many others that are there.

  345. Letter B adultery

  346. is breaking is covenant breaking and

  347. that comes from idolatry. When I

  348. preached that a couple of weeks ago,

  349. somebody came up to me and said, "I had

  350. never thought about that. I never

  351. thought about adultery as being

  352. idolatry. It's anything that we put in

  353. front of God. And when you put another

  354. person who is not your mate um before

  355. yourself, what you're doing is you are

  356. you are abandoning God's plan and you

  357. are embracing your own plan. You are

  358. going after idolatry. You're worshiping

  359. something else. Letter C, divorce

  360. certificate. This is the covenant

  361. termination. And this you remember with

  362. me, Jesus said, because of the hardness

  363. of your heart, Moses allowed you to

  364. divorce your wives. But from the

  365. beginning it was what? It was not so. So

  366. this is this was not the plan. Look at

  367. letter D. New covenant, new marriage.

  368. And I love Jeremiah 31. Can you put a

  369. big circle around Jeremiah 31? I'll just

  370. say to you, um, in the last week, I have

  371. read Jeremiah 31 at least one time every

  372. day. Um, God has been doing a work in my

  373. own heart in Jeremiah 31. Um, and I I

  374. want to encourage you. It is where we

  375. see the glorious redemption. One of the

  376. places where we see the glorious

  377. redemption of God. That is the promise

  378. of a perfect marriage with his people.

  379. That is that is his plan. He's going to

  380. give he has promised us a perfect

  381. marriage with us. This is his salvation

  382. that comes to us. And Ezekiel also

  383. mimics that as well. Look at verse 26.

  384. Ezekiel 36 verse 26. And I will give you

    Ezekiel 36:26

  385. a new heart. A new spirit I will put

  386. within you. And I will remove the heart

  387. of stone from your flesh from your flesh

  388. and give you a heart of flesh. And I

  389. will put my spirit within you and cause

  390. you to walk in my statutes and be

  391. careful to obey my rules. So this is God

  392. completely giving us a new heart so that

  393. we can obey. Uh we said the new covenant

  394. is unbreakable and it is eternal

  395. remarage of God to his redeemed people.

  396. This is amazing. All of their infidelity

  397. was forgiven. He replaces their heart

  398. and he becomes perfectly one with them.

  399. Well, flip the page. Roman numeral

  400. number four. We saw that Christ

  401. is the one who is the ultimate

  402. bridegroom. He is the ultimate

  403. bridegroom. He is the one that is going

  404. to marry his people. And we see A, B, C,

  405. D, E. All of these evidences of this

  406. John's testimony, Jesus's first miracle

  407. was at a wedding in Canaa, the parable

  408. of the wedding feast. Paul's statement,

  409. Paul's statement was very important.

  410. Look at that on your outline. Letter D,

  411. his explicit statement. Therefore, a man

  412. shall leave his father and his mother

  413. and hold fast to his wife, and the two

  414. shall become one flesh. That's Paul

  415. quoting from Genesis. And then he says

  416. this, this mystery is profound. And I'm

  417. saying that it refers to Christ and the

  418. church. And so here it is. This is the

  419. big marriage being mentioned of Christ

  420. and the church. And though notice letter

  421. E, Christ's covenant sealing blood. If a

  422. marriage is a covenant, here it is. It's

  423. sealed in this covenant. The cup that is

  424. poured out for you is the new covenant

  425. in my blood. And then Hebrews 13:20. Now

    Hebrews 13:20

  426. may the God of peace equip you with

  427. everything good through what? Read it

  428. out loud. The blood of the eternal

  429. covenant. This is the bigger marriage.

  430. This is the eternal marriage.

  431. Our marriage here in this earthly life

  432. to husband and wife is not an eternal

  433. marriage. The Mormons are wrong about

  434. that. Um here we see and in numerous

  435. other places in the scripture that the

  436. real eternal marriage is the marriage of

  437. God to his people. Look at Roman numeral

  438. number five. If Christ is the ultimate

  439. bridegroom, then we see in this the

  440. church, God's people as the covenant

  441. bride. That's what we see here. And so

  442. this is the beautiful picture of our

  443. present reality. He we are a betrothed

  444. version. We are engaged to be married in

  445. Christ. And what we read in the Bible in

  446. the book of Revelation at the end as we

  447. look toward the end of this present

  448. earthly life, the picture is the future

  449. consummation of God and his people

  450. finally being together without time or

  451. space or sin in between. That's the big

  452. picture. Look at Revelation 19:6.

    Revelation 19:6

  453. Um he says, "Hallelujah for the Lord our

  454. God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice

  455. and exalt and give him the glory."

  456. Underline it. "For the marriage of the

  457. Lamb has come and his bride has made

  458. herself ready. Blessed are those who are

  459. invited to underline it the what?

  460. >> Marriage supper of the Lamb." This is

  461. the big marriage. This is the big

  462. wedding and this is the great plan that

  463. is eternal. Revelation 21. So right

  464. there at the very end of the Bible, we

  465. see it. And I saw the holy city, New

  466. Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven

  467. from God, prepared as a bride, adorned

  468. for her what?

  469. >> Husband. Come, I will show you the

  470. bride, the wife of the lamb.

  471. Now, this is

  472. the thing that flips everything on its

  473. head. This is what Pastor William was

  474. talking about was, wow, in scripture,

  475. the grander concept, the greater picture

  476. is not my earthly relationship to Sam,

  477. but it is my heavenly relationship with

  478. Christ. and not just mine, but all of

  479. the redeemed, all of those who are in

  480. Christ. This is God's whole point in

  481. making us male and female in giving us

  482. husband and wife. Notice this statement

  483. at the bottom there.

  484. Um, at the consummation of the ages, and

  485. I put above that this time for you, the

  486. marriage supper of the lamb that we just

  487. read about. At the consummation of the

  488. ages, the church perfectly purified,

  489. radiant in resurrection glory, forever

  490. one with the lamb, descends as the new

  491. Jerusalem to dwell with God in the

  492. eternal, unbreakable marriage where

  493. every tear is wiped away and God's

  494. words, "Behold, the dwelling place of

  495. God is with man in effect becomes the

  496. everlasting ing what I do. This is God

  497. saying I am with you forever. I do

  498. finally and forever never to be

  499. separated from you. So part two is right

  500. here and I want you to see this. This is

  501. really valuable for us this morning. Um

  502. so this is just just imagine 168 167

  503. hours ago. We keep going. Okay. So, last

  504. Sunday to right now at this same time,

  505. we keep going. Look at this with me.

  506. Covenantal implications. Covenantal

  507. implications for Christian marriage. It

  508. says, what does this mean? Where does it

  509. go? Every earthly marriage between a

  510. husband and a wife is a temporary

  511. illustration. Can you underline that? a

  512. temporary illustration

  513. of God's underline permanent

  514. relationship between himself and his

  515. people. Your earthly marriage, your

  516. parents' earthly marriage,

  517. your the people that are everybody that

  518. you know that this is a temporary

  519. illustration

  520. of something far grander that is

  521. permanent.

  522. So what does this practically mean for

  523. our marriages? If that's what marriage

  524. means, how do we live that out? How do

  525. we do it? Now, what I'm saying to you is

  526. this.

  527. When I say that over the last 100 to 150

  528. years, the real meaning of marriage has

  529. been lost. This is what I'm talking

  530. about. The vast majority of you have

  531. never truly thought about

  532. your marriage with God being a much

  533. grander marriage or the church's

  534. marriage with Christ being the much

  535. grander marriage. We just think in terms

  536. of earthly marriage. And the reason we

  537. do that is because this doctrine, this

  538. truth, this reality of the whole Bible

  539. has been neglected in Bible teaching.

  540. We haven't been taught this reality. In

  541. fact, I mean, I I would hear that

  542. sometimes as a kid growing up, mainly at

  543. a wedding, Christ in the church, but to

  544. be honest with you, it wasn't until

  545. years later that I started to really

  546. realize what it all is pointing to. Now,

  547. I my prayer is if you're in middle

  548. school today, maybe even a little bit

  549. younger than that, my prayer is is that

  550. you're starting now as a fourth grader,

  551. a fifth grader, a sixth grader, seventh

  552. grader, starting to just come into your

  553. whole life understanding that God wants

  554. a permanent relationship with you.

  555. God has designed it so that that the

  556. church, God's people, can truly know him

  557. for eternity. And that's what he's

  558. designed this whole life to point to.

  559. And so my prayer is is that we would

  560. recognize this and then live like it.

  561. Live like it. You say, "Well, how does

  562. this have to do with our communication

  563. problem?" Or, "How does this have to do

  564. with we have different views? We have

  565. different views. That that's the reason

  566. we're struggling." or or maybe our co,

  567. you know, my love or her love has grown

  568. cold toward me or we have some bad

  569. habits in our marriage. Let me tell you,

  570. one of the most important things that

  571. you can do in wanting to have a healthy

  572. biblical marriage is to understand what

  573. it means.

  574. And if you will come to understand what

  575. it means, you are far more likely to be

  576. able to work through your earthly

  577. marriage issues.

  578. You're far more likely as you start to

  579. see it kind of like you're seeking to

  580. walk with Christ and you need to learn

  581. about that where you're also, listen to

  582. this, you're also seeking to learn to

  583. walk with your spouse. And learning to

  584. walk with your spouse can help you learn

  585. to walk with Christ. And learning to

  586. walk with Christ can help you walk with

  587. your spouse because God has a purpose

  588. for it. And I want us to see what that

  589. is. Look at letter A.

  590. So the implications for Christian

  591. marriage. Here it is. What does it mean?

  592. It means that the ultimate goal of our

  593. marriage is to display

  594. Christ's covenantkeeping

  595. love. That is the ultimate goal is so

  596. that your earthly marriage can display

  597. Christ's covenant-keeping love. You see,

  598. notice the first one here. God gave us

  599. marriage to display his covenanteping

  600. love to ourselves. To ourselves. He He

  601. gave it for so that you can see it and

  602. you can learn of it. How about this? God

  603. gave us marriage to display his covenant

  604. keeping love to other believers. So

  605. other believers see your life, they see

  606. your marriage, they see your

  607. relationship, and hopefully the picture

  608. is is that your life will reflect the

  609. love of Christ. And so other believers

  610. can be encouraged by that. You know,

  611. this this idea that Christians live as

  612. lone ranger Christians, that's that's

  613. patently ungodly.

  614. Just like your relationship

  615. is not your relationship with God is not

  616. private but it's personal. Listen to

  617. this. It's also not individual.

  618. Your relationship with Christ is not

  619. meant to be merely indivi individual. It

  620. is meant to be corporate. And that's

  621. what we see God dealing with Israel.

  622. That's what we see God dealing with the

  623. church. It certainly has the personal

  624. individual element to it, but we don't

  625. see everything in scripture all about

  626. you being it's just you and God. What we

  627. really see is the scripture constantly

  628. talks about God and his people.

  629. And so that's I'm so proud of you for

  630. being here this morning to come and to

  631. learn of Christ together that when you

  632. get a name tag and you enter in and you

  633. say good morning to someone, what you're

  634. doing is that's Hebrews tells us that's

  635. even part of worship. That our

  636. fellowship with one another, our

  637. relationship with one another is part of

  638. our worship of God. There's people who

  639. have come to our church, they come

  640. first, second, third time, and they kind

  641. of look at everybody and they go, "These

  642. people can't. They they got to be

  643. they're fake. They don't really care

  644. about each other. There's one guy in our

  645. church. He's an investigator for a

  646. police department. And he just said,

  647. "The first several times I came to

  648. church, I was like, "Okay, this these

  649. people are over the top. I mean, they

  650. they act like they actually care about

  651. how my week went."

  652. And you know, he goes home and he tells

  653. his wife that and she goes, "Well, I

  654. think it's cuz they do."

  655. Now, we're not perfect about that.

  656. There's no doubt about it. But, you

  657. know, we don't shuffle in and shuffle

  658. out and just wave.

  659. That person said that he went to a

  660. church for 40 years and he only knew a

  661. handful of people.

  662. That is not Christlike. That is not God

  663. has designed us to be together in this

  664. life to walk together in this life

  665. honoring the Lord. The third one is

  666. this. God gave us marriage to display

  667. his covenanteping love what to the

  668. world. This is part of the witness that

  669. God has his people on the earth for.

  670. Israel existed so that and the you could

  671. say the motto was of the Old Testament.

  672. Israel was there God's chosen people.

  673. God was dealing with Israel and the

  674. whole idea was come and see. Come and

  675. see God dealing with his people. And

  676. that's why they were supposed to be

  677. faithful to him. So if they were

  678. faithful to him, they would look

  679. different than the other nations of the

  680. earth. The other nations would come and

  681. see God dealing with them, God, their

  682. obedience to God, God blessing them, and

  683. the other nations of the earth could

  684. look and see this God and his people and

  685. seek to join in. But Israel, of course,

  686. kept messing that up. They kept not

  687. being faithful to him. But God's

  688. relentless love kept coming back after

  689. them over and over. his covenant with

  690. them prevailed over their rejection of

  691. him. In the New Testament, we don't see

  692. come and see. In the New Testament, we

  693. see that the message to God's people is

  694. go and tell. Go and tell. You've come

  695. and you've seen Jesus now. Go and tell

  696. the world. Because this gospel, this

  697. covenant relationship is for everyone.

  698. Well, one of the ways that we can do

  699. that is that we live out God's plan for

  700. covenantkeeping

  701. love. That means it's a love that keeps

  702. a covenant that was made. It's a love

  703. that in the hard times and when you

  704. don't feel like you're in love anymore,

  705. you keep the covenant.

  706. It's a love that goes. Do you think God

  707. had warm fuzzy feelings throughout all

  708. of the Old Testament toward his people?

  709. Now, some of you haven't studied the

  710. Bible yet enough to know this. I could

  711. read you passages of scripture that

  712. would just make your hair curl right now

  713. about God's anger toward his people

  714. because of their unfaithfulness to him.

  715. His anger burned against them. But you

  716. know, it's interesting that even though

  717. that was there, God continued in his

  718. love for them. God remained faithful to

  719. the covenant that he had made when they

  720. had not over and over again. And so God

  721. was saying this covenant shall stand.

  722. Letter B. What does covenant? What does

  723. the covenantal implications mean? Letter

  724. B. It means our marriages are intended

  725. to be indissoluble. Indissoluble. What

  726. does that indissoluble mean? Put out

  727. there to the side. Cannot be dissolved.

  728. Cannot be dissolved. It's not meant to

  729. be dissolved. It's not meant to be done

  730. away with. It's meant to stand.

  731. That's God's intention for us that the

  732. marriage would stand. And he and we see

  733. even in the New Testament, Romans 7:es

  734. 1-3, the Apostle Paul is writing to the

  735. Romans. And look what he says. Or do you

  736. not know, brothers, for I am speaking to

  737. those who know the law, that the law is

  738. binding on a person only as he lives?

  739. For a married woman is bound by law to

  740. her husband while he lives. But if her

  741. husband dies, she is released from the

  742. law of the marriage. In verse three,

  743. accordingly she will be called an

  744. adulteress. if she lives with another

  745. man while her husband is alive. But if

  746. her husband dies, she is free from that

  747. law. And if she marries another man, she

  748. is not an adulteress. Here's the picture

  749. here. There's a few cases that Jesus

  750. gives and the Apostle Paul gives where

  751. marriage is, excuse me, um being divided

  752. or dissolving a marriage. A divorce is

  753. is not the original plan. That's exactly

  754. what we read from Jesus. But there are a

  755. few cases where that is permitted

  756. because of sin.

  757. But other than that, other than those

  758. few cases of that, we see a great

  759. emphasis on God holding together, on

  760. people holding together in their

  761. marriage when they don't feel like it.

  762. When they feel like it's not what they

  763. thought, when they are disappointed,

  764. when they feel even hurt. The picture is

  765. this. You hold on to this because this

  766. is the example of what God does with

  767. you. He holds on to you. And when you

  768. don't hold on to it, when you break this

  769. earthly marriage before you, what you're

  770. saying and what you're doing is you're

  771. breaking God's wonderful illustration of

  772. his love for you. You're ruining that

  773. example for your life and for others.

  774. And so, this is a very important aspect

  775. of this. Look with me here in Matthew

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  776. chapter 19. Jesus is speaking and he

  777. said, "Therefore, a man shall leave his

  778. father and his mother and hold fast to

  779. his wife and the two shall become one

  780. flesh." Again, that's coming from

  781. Genesis verse 6. So they are no longer

  782. two, but one flesh.

  783. What therefore God has joined together,

  784. let not man separate." They said to him,

  785. "Why then did Moses command one to give

  786. a certificate of divorce and send her

  787. away?" Verse 8, he said to them,

  788. "Because of your hardness of heart,

  789. Moses allowed you to divorce to to

  790. divorce your wives, but from the

  791. beginning it was not so." Yes, that was

  792. in last Sunday's sermon and it bears

  793. repeating for today. that this is the

  794. grand picture. And because we have

  795. listened to the world's answers on this

  796. and not to God's notice letter C, it

  797. means a husband is to sacrifice himself

  798. for the welfare of his wife.

  799. What's the next word?

  800. >> Continually.

  801. You see, Christ never stopped

  802. sacrificing himself for the welfare of

  803. his people. He does it ultimately and he

  804. does it continually. And that's what we

  805. see in the scripture that God, listen to

  806. this, God wants to us to learn about his

  807. love for us by husbands learning to lay

  808. down their lives for their wife.

  809. This is amazing. She see Jesus did it

  810. all the way to his death to save and to

  811. cleanse the church from sin. Now Andrew

  812. cannot give up his life physically to

  813. save Marcy. First of all, I don't need

  814. to. Jesus has already saved her. But

  815. number two, I I'm not the one who is

  816. able to cleanse her. Instead, what I am

  817. able to do by God's design is that it

  818. should be my goal to show her

  819. the way of Christ. It should be my goal

  820. to show her the love of Christ, by the

  821. way, by the way I speak to her, by the

  822. way serve her and care for her so that

  823. she can see Jesus in me.

  824. That is God's design. You wonder why so

  825. many women struggle very often with

  826. their husband and his example. Very

  827. often it's because he is not laying down

  828. his life

  829. for his wife.

  830. He's stronger than she is.

  831. He's physically stronger.

  832. He's bigger. society and everything else

  833. pivots toward him [clears throat]

  834. in many many different ways. And so this

  835. when a husband is not acting as Christ

  836. toward his wife, this does nothing but

  837. create a burr

  838. in her heart. And as we see, go back and

  839. read Genesis. Go back to Genesis chapter

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  840. 3 and see what God said would happen.

  841. What God said would happen is, okay,

  842. because you all have chosen the way of

  843. sin, there's there's going to be several

  844. consequences here. One of them is you're

  845. going to have to work by the sweat of

  846. your brow to survive.

  847. And there's going to be strife

  848. in your life. And listen to this. Your

  849. desire, women, your desire is going to

  850. be to rule over your husband, but you

  851. won't.

  852. That's that's part of the picture that

  853. is here. So, we see this conflict. It's

  854. baked into the fall. It's baked into our

  855. human condition that we so desperately

  856. need redemption from. And that's what

  857. God does. He gives us the redemption

  858. through Jesus Christ. He gives us the

  859. plan of how to be saved from our sin,

  860. how to be given a new heart and a new

  861. mind. And listen, we read it a few

  862. minutes ago from Ezekiel. and the will

  863. to obey. Now, you may not feel like

  864. that's always there. Sometimes you feel

  865. like, well, I just fail at that and I'm

  866. I'm not going to Listen, the fact of the

  867. matter is is that that's the reason

  868. Jesus died on the cross was so that you

  869. could be saved from your sin. And that

  870. doesn't mean just hellfire. It means you

  871. can be saved from doing the things that

  872. are against the heart of God and against

  873. the heart of your wife and against the

  874. heart of your husband.

  875. He saved you to give you the power to

  876. obey.

  877. And this is another area of theology

  878. that has very often been neglected.

  879. That Christians see themselves as

  880. victims. Well, I just can't help it.

  881. It's just what I do. I have an anger

  882. problem or I have a a hatred problem or

  883. I I can't forgive or I or I, you know,

  884. whatever it is. I I can't seem to pull

  885. it together. No. Listen,

  886. all of the answers are yes and amen

  887. through Jesus Christ.

  888. >> He is the one who gives us the strength

  889. to obey.

  890. Notice here with me, letter C there. It

  891. means a husband is to sacrifice himself

  892. for the welfare of his wife. Look at

  893. Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 25.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  894. Husbands,

  895. love your wives as Christ loved the

  896. church and gave himself up for her, that

  897. he may sanctify her, having cleansed her

  898. by the washing of the water with the

  899. word. Verse 27, so that he might present

  900. the church to himself in splendor

  901. without spot or wrinkle or any such

  902. thing, that she might be holy and blame,

  903. holy and without blemish. Now, if you

  904. would put a big circle around those

  905. passages below that because that's

  906. probably what you ought to do this week

  907. for homework. And notice that I made

  908. bold the first one. What is the first

  909. one that is there?

  910. >> First Peter what

  911. >> three, right? That's that's our passage

  912. that is next for us. And so, but it's

  913. also in numerous other places. These

  914. aren't the only ones, but this is this

  915. is where the picture is. Is that

  916. husbands are to love their wives as

  917. Christ loved the church. Flip your page

  918. over and let's go to letter D. So the

  919. implication is that husbands are to do

  920. that. The implication letter D, it means

  921. this. A covenant marriage is this. A

  922. covenant relationship with Christ is

  923. this. It means a wife is to submit

  924. herself to her husband's leadership so

  925. long as she is not abused or forced to

  926. dishonor the Lord. So you you don't

  927. submit when your husband is calling you

  928. to do the wrong thing, the something

  929. that is um grossly evil and wrong in the

  930. sight of God or or that or if he is

  931. abusing you. And that's part of what

  932. we'll have to work through. We'll have

  933. to talk about what is abuse, what is not

  934. abuse, what what what do you do in those

  935. situations. We're not saying that

  936. there's a blind submission.

  937. If he's going to beat you, let him beat

  938. you. Absolutely not.

  939. But notice here with me that the

  940. scripture clearly over and over again

  941. shows that the roles and the order

  942. within the home is part of this. And

  943. it's patterned, listen, it's patterned

  944. after the church with Christ.

  945. It's patterned after the church with

  946. Christ. Look at Ephesians 5 22. Wives,

  947. submit to your own husbands as to the

  948. Lord, saying, So as you submit to the

  949. Lord, you also submit to the authority

  950. of your husband. Verse 23, for the

  951. husband is head of the wife, even as

  952. Christ is the head of the church, his

  953. body, and is himself its savior. Now,

  954. this isn't saying your husband is your

  955. savior. It's simply showing the order of

  956. this. It's simply showing that the whole

  957. church, including your husband, is to

  958. submit to Christ. Right? And so, as we

  959. see this, we work out what God's

  960. glorious plan is. Look at verse 24. Now,

  961. as the church submits to Christ, so also

  962. wives should submit in everything to

  963. their husbands. You say, why does it

  964. have to say in everything? What does

  965. that mean? Okay, that's going to be for

  966. the next few weeks. We're we're going to

  967. look at that. We're not done with this.

  968. We're going to circle back on that, but

  969. we're we're going to see what how does

  970. this work? How can this really be

  971. healthy? How can it how can Sheridan

  972. Hills have a bunch of marriages in the

  973. years to come that are really healthy,

  974. really honoring Christ where the

  975. husbands are doing what they're supposed

  976. to be doing and where the wives are

  977. doing what they're supposed to be doing.

  978. We're going to look at that and we're

  979. going to we're taking swings at that.

  980. We're going to strive. We're not just

  981. going to go with the culture. We're

  982. going to seek to let God's word and his

  983. spirit change us so that our lives are

  984. truly representative of his design and

  985. his plan. Now again, put a big circle

  986. around those passages underneath

  987. Ephesians chapter 5. What is the first

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  988. one you notice there?

  989. >> 1 Peter 3. So we'll be circling back on

  990. that. But we also see it in Colossians

  991. 3, Titus 2, 1 Corinthians 11. So,

  992. husbands, love your wives as Christ

  993. loved the church. Wives, submit to your

  994. husbands as the church submits to

  995. Christ. You know, there's a little bit

  996. of a problem with this in this day and

  997. time on this regard for our

  998. understanding. By the way,

  999. part of the reason that doesn't work in

1000. our thinking, it works perfectly in

1001. reality, but in our false thinking,

1002. sometimes we go, "Well, wait a minute.

1003. What does that even mean? Submit as the

1004. as the church submits to Christ." You

1005. know what part of the problem is? A lot

1006. of churches don't submit to Christ.

  1007. A lot of churches

1008. are doing their own thing. They do their

1009. own thing in Jesus' name.

1010. They love to put the logo of Jesus on

1011. the advertisement and they love to put

1012. the logo of Jesus and they love to

1013. mention Jesus, but they ultimately are

1014. in pursuit either in their dead

  1015. fundamentalism

1016. or in their wild charismania or

  1017. prosperity gospel. There's a lot of

1018. different ways you can do it. There's a

1019. lot of different ways that you can still

  1020. ignore Christ

1021. in the name of Jesus.

1022. Sounds strange, but we live in a world

1023. where that is often the case. And may

1024. that not be true of our hearts. May

1025. Christ truly be the Lord of this church.

1026. May Christ be the head of this church.

1027. May his word dictate our hearts, not our

1028. own desires. and not our culture around

  1029. us. Amen.

  1030. >> That was a weak amen.

  1031. >> Letter E.

1032. It means that just as baptism and the

1033. Lord's supper pastor, why in the world

1034. are you bringing up baptism? Well,

1035. you're going to see. It means that just

1036. as baptism and the Lord's supper are

1037. continual reminders of the church being

1038. what? Married to Christ. So covenant

1039. marriage between a husband and a wife

  1040. requires constant

  1041. remembrance

  1042. and renewal.

  1043. >> Amen.

1044. >> We have to remember this. Now when we

1045. look at our spiritual lives, there's

1046. many many many many times that God is

1047. saying remember remember. Why? Because

1048. in our fallenness, we forget things. And

1049. the older we get, we forget more. I'm

1050. like that. I have to ask the guys all

1051. the time. Hey guys, remind me about

1052. that. What's going on? I mean, you know,

1053. have I already told you this? You know,

1054. and you know, Pastor William, yes, you

1055. already told me that. Okay, good. All

  1056. right.

  1057. We forget, right?

1058. God knows that about us. You can be 25

1059. years old and forget some of the most

1060. important things. And that's why God

1061. remember reminds us first thing that we

  1062. see here is baptism.

1063. God gives the people of God the church

1064. of God baptism. It recognizes

1065. someone personally coming into covenant

  1066. with Christ.

1067. Today when Gena and when Kaden were

1068. baptized, this is the official statement

1069. of them publicly saying we are now with

1070. Christ. We are not on our own. We we

1071. have believed upon Christ and he has

1072. saved us from our sins. We are now in

1073. eternal life with Christ as he has

1074. designed. So it is the recognition of

1075. that. Look at Romans 6 3-4. Do you not

1076. know that all of us who have been

1077. baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized

1078. into his death? We were buried therefore

1079. with him by baptism into death in order

1080. that just as Christ was raised from the

1081. dead by the glory of the father,

1082. underline it, we too may walk in newness

1083. of life. He makes all things new. That's

1084. exactly what Caden chose uh a verse to

1085. share with you. 1 Corinthians 5:17. If

1086. any man be in Christ, he is a new

1087. creation. Behold, old things have passed

1088. away. All things have become new. That

1089. is the picture. That's the picture of

1090. baptism. So, baptism recognizes that.

1091. Now, get this. This is so cool. This is

1092. similar to a wedding for a married

  1093. couple.

1094. Do you get what I'm saying?

1095. >> Like baptism represents the beginning of

1096. your relationship with Christ. Listen,

1097. a wedding that maybe happens right here

1098. at this altar where Marcy and I got

1099. married and where many of you got

1100. married. A wedding represents your

1101. beginning of your covenant relationship

  1102. with your spouse.

1103. And so baptism is a picture of that

1104. grander relationship that we have. And

1105. now we see the wedding. Now what else is

  1106. here? The Lord's supper.

  1107. [sighs] It's interesting that the Lord's

1108. supper fills it in. Fill it in reminds

1109. us of our covenant relationship with

  1110. Jesus.

1111. This is why we are told to observe the

1112. Lord's supper. We are told to remember

1113. what Christ has done. And so very often,

1114. at least once a month, we set this table

1115. before us. And the table that the Lord

1116. has called believers to remember, to

1117. obey um him in observing the Lord's

1118. supper is to remind you of what he did

1119. for you in order to bring you into

1120. covenant relationship with him. So

1121. baptism is at the beginning of your

1122. relationship with Christ. The Lord's

1123. supper continues with you through the

1124. rest of your life as you gather together

1125. with the body of Christ. And we remember

1126. what Jesus did to bring us into

  1127. relationship with him.

1128. And so that's why we don't partake of

1129. the Lord's supper regarding sin in our

1130. heart. Holding on to sin in our heart.

1131. We confess that. We we use it as a time

1132. to to do an inspection in our heart. You

1133. should never come to the table of the

1134. Lord regarding sin. Having unconfessed

  1135. sin in your heart,

1136. that brings great danger upon your life

1137. to insult Christ in that way. You say,

  1138. "Well, then I guess I can't observe the

  1139. Lord's supper." Well, that's one option.

1140. A better option is what?

  1141. repent of your sin,

1142. >> which is far better for you anyway.

1143. But if you won't repent of your sin and

1144. you continue with that, then you need to

1145. go look at First John that says, "Anyone

1146. who continues to practice sin is of the

  1147. devil

1148. because the devil is sin from the

  1149. beginning."

1150. And so, we have to really evaluate, are

  1151. we really a Christian? If we're really a

1152. Christian, we're called to walk in the

1153. way of Christ. And one of the ways that

1154. he gives us to continue to walk in the

1155. way of Christ is the Lord's table. The

1156. Lord's table reminds us of the sacrifice

1157. that was made so we can be in awe of

1158. that and remember it and come, listen,

1159. and come to love Christ more than we

1160. love porn. Come to love Christ more than

1161. we love lying. Come to love Christ more

  1162. than we love selfishness.

1163. Come to love Christ more than we love

1164. anything else. Because when we love him

1165. more, then we are going to come to hate

1166. the sin that our flesh gravitates to.

1167. And so the Lord's supper reminds us of

  1168. this. Look at 1 Corinthians 11 23 and

1169. 24. For I received from the Lord what I

1170. also delivered to you, that the Lord

1171. Jesus on the night when he was betrayed,

1172. so this is the Passover night, he's

1173. observing Passover with the with his

  1174. disciples.

1175. and and he he just totally blows them

1176. away with this in verse 24. And when he

1177. had given thanks, he brokeen and said,

1178. "This is my body which is for you." So

  1179. he's picturing what's about to happen.

1180. And then what does he say? Read it out

1181. loud. Do this in remembrance of me. And

1182. then after he had broken the bread,

1183. verse 25, in the same way also he took

1184. the cup after supper, saying, "This cup

1185. is the," Underline it, new covenant in

1186. my blood. And what does he say? Read it

1187. out loud with me. Do this as often as

1188. you drink it in remembrance of me.

1189. This is the plan that God has to help

1190. you listen to help you stay married to

1191. him, to help you stay faithful to him.

1192. The Lord's table can help you. You know

1193. what I mean? If you're not going to be

1194. here on any Sunday, listen, you need to

1195. be deathly ill in order to miss the

  1196. Lord's table.

1197. You ought to be here and you ought to

1198. have your heart ready. You ought to

1199. prepare your heart to remember the

  1200. Lord's table. And if you're struggling

1201. with that, you ought to call somebody

1202. that week ahead of it and say, "You know

  1203. what? I'm struggling with something. I'm

1204. struggling with something in my heart

1205. that's against the Lord, and I need you

1206. to pray with me. Maybe you need to maybe

1207. you need to reach out to someone. But

1208. listen, do not neglect being right with

1209. God and remembering his table."

1210. Well, now in a similar way, in a similar

1211. way, look at this on your outline.

1212. This is similar to a renewal, a

1213. remembrance of your marriage covenant.

1214. This is the same thing for a husband and

1215. a wife that they need to remember the

1216. marriage covenant. Part of you, some of

1217. you are really struggling in your

1218. relationship with each other because you

1219. keep forgetting. You let the busyiness

1220. of life run you from thing to thing to

1221. thing, from trouble to trouble to

1222. trouble, and you miss his goodness in

1223. this. It could be a daily walk. It could

1224. be a regular date night. Sound good? A

  1225. planned TOC that means a talk. That's a

1226. time of open communication. A vowel

  1227. renewal.

1228. A husband and a wife are sinners. They

1229. also need to be repenters.

1230. And they need to be forgivers.

1231. As Christians are expected to grow and

1232. mature in their relationship with

1233. Christ, so they must grow and mature in

1234. their love and marriage to one another.

  1235. This is God's plan

1236. um that you would grow in your marriage.

1237. Letter F, notice this. One flesh union.

1238. One flesh union by design is exclusively

1239. covenantal. And that means it's not

  1240. casual or open.

1241. God made us sexually. And this is for a

1242. reason. And there's beauty in that. It's

1243. it's very significant in that. Not only

1244. for procreation, but for relationship.

1245. Look at this. Exodus 20:14. Would you

    Exodus 20:14

1246. read it out loud? Exodus 20:14. Read it

    Exodus 20:14

  1247. out loud.

1248. >> What is that? That's one of the ten

  1249. commandments.

1250. Thou shalt not, you shall not commit

1251. adultery. What about Hebrews 13:4? Let

    Hebrews 13:4

1252. the marriage be held, let marriage be

1253. held in honor among all. Let the

1254. marriage bed be undefiled, for God will

1255. judge the sexually immoral and the

1256. adulterous. Flip over. Look at 1

  1257. Corinthians 6.

1258. Flee from sexual immorality. Every other

1259. son of every other sin a man commit can

1260. commit is outside his body. But he who

1261. sins sexually sins against his own body.

1262. Do you not know that your body is a

1263. temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you,

1264. whom you have received from God? You are

1265. not your own. You were bought with a

  1266. price.

1267. Therefore, glorify God with your body.

1268. Fill it in. God's covenant with Israel

1269. did not tolerate worshiping other gods.

  1270. He would not allow.

1271. And and when they did, he called them an

  1272. adulterous generation.

1273. How about this? A marriage covenant does

1274. not tolerate other lovers sexually or

  1275. emotionally.

1276. That is that is completely outside the

1277. bounds. Just like God doesn't want

1278. Israel worshiping other gods, God has

1279. designed it for us to expect that our

1280. spouse and that we ourselves would be

1281. saved only for them, not not sexually or

  1282. emotionally, either one. Letter G. A

1283. covenantal marriage displays the gospel

1284. of committed love. A covenantal marriage

1285. displays the gospel of committed love,

  1286. forgiveness,

1287. and mission to the world.

1288. So so desperate that so desperately

1289. needs to see it. So the idea is the

1290. world is desperate for real love and

1291. they need to see it in the lives of

1292. God's people. Um this is the the picture

1293. of what he has g given us. So covenantal

  1294. marriage displays

1295. this gospel of it displays forgiveness

1296. because we're sinners. We sin against

1297. each other. And look at this. The

1298. mission to the world. We proclaim

1299. Christ. Look at Mark 10 and verse 45.

1300. Look what it says. For even the son of

1301. man came not to be served but to what?

1302. >> To serve and to give his life as a

1303. ransom for many. Okay. So, very quickly,

1304. how does this help us? How do these

1305. implications help us? What can we do

1306. with what we've heard? And we're going

1307. to we're going to look at more things

  1308. specifically

1309. um as it relates to First Peter in the

1310. coming weeks. But notice this with me.

1311. How what do we do with all of this, the

  1312. last two sermons

  1313. to the long-ch Christian? So, there's

1314. people in this room that have not

1315. surrendered to Christ. You haven't yet

  1316. become a Christian. You've been thinking

1317. about it. you've been learning. Maybe

1318. you're like Kaden or Gena. You kind of

1319. thought you were, but then you realized

  1320. you're not. Notice this.

1321. Number one, to the non-Christians, see

  1322. that God's word is intricate. It's

1323. cohesive, and it's sensical. It makes

1324. sense. It deals very honestly with the

1325. greatest issues in life. If you ask him

  1326. to,

1327. God will speak to you through his word.

1328. That's the first thing that I want you

1329. to see. that if you will ask God to

1330. speak to you, he will begin to speak to

1331. you through his word. And then number

1332. two, see that Christ calls you into a

1333. underline it covenant relationship with

1334. him. He calls you to that. And how do

1335. you come to that? Through seeing his

  1336. total self-sacrifice

1337. for you on the cross. He died so you can

  1338. live forever.

1339. Come to him in repentance and faith. Ask

1340. him to cleanse you and save you. Maybe

1341. you've never seen it in black and white

1342. what you need to do personally. This is

1343. where it all begins. And that's the

1344. greatest thing that you can do if you

1345. want to have a marriage um either now or

1346. someday that is right is to come to

1347. Christ. To the Christian, here's some

1348. big things. Number one, see that the

1349. really big marriage is not between man

1350. and a man and a woman, but between God

1351. and his people. That's the really big

1352. one. That's where all this is headed

1353. headed. God gave us earthly marriage

1354. because we are heading to a wedding.

1355. That's what we're doing. We are heading

  1356. to a wedding.

1357. And you can read Revelation chapter 19

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

1358. and see that as we've touched on

1359. already. So, you need to recognize

1360. that's what all this means. Number two,

1361. see that God calls us to be underline it

1362. covenant in a call calls us to a

  1363. covenanteping love relationship with

1364. him. That changes our identity. We are

1365. no longer merely ourselves, but we are

  1366. now in him.

  1367. And that's very significant

1368. because it's only in being in him that

  1369. we can properly be

  1370. one with our spouse.

1371. When we are in him and we're growing in

1372. that relationship, then we can be in

1373. proper relationship with our spouse.

  1374. Look at number three.

  1375. Embrace

  1376. God's design

1377. for marriage and reject the world's

  1378. distortion

  1379. of marriage.

1380. Embrace God's design for marriage and

1381. reject the world's distortion for

1382. marriage. I pray that you will do just

1383. that. Would you stand with me for

  1384. prayer?

1385. That last one, embrace God's design.

  1386. >> And reject the world's distortion.

1387. >> We're going to look at that over the

  1388. next few weeks.

1389. >> We're going to look at how do we

1390. practically do that. How do we live that

  1391. out?

1392. And how do we allow Christ to be all

1393. that he's called us to be?

1394. Father in heaven, I thank you for your

1395. goodness. Thank you for your grace.

1396. I do pray that you would rule and reign

1397. over our hearts. I pray that we would

  1398. live out your truth.

1399. And Father, I pray that we would be

1400. exactly what Christ has called us to be.

1401. I pray that we would see the great

  1402. marriage of heaven

1403. and that that marriage would inspire our

  1404. earthly marriages in Christ.

1405. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
