  1. Indeed, we are called to come and to

  2. adore him, to worship him. One of the

  3. greatest ways that we worship him is by

  4. bringing our minds and our hearts to him

  5. and finding his grace and truth. Well,

  6. this morning, uh, if you don't have a

  7. sermon outline, there are some guys that

  8. are coming forward to give one to you.

  9. And if you're joining us online, we want

  10. you to know that our sermon outlines are

  11. available on our website. And the way we

  12. teach and preach in the life of our

  13. church, you really need one of these

  14. outlines. It will help you immensely as

  15. we come to this time of our worship.

  16. We've often said this in the life of the

  17. church and it is it is a a great thing

  18. as we've just sung worshiping him and

  19. adoring him. Listen to this. Truth in

  20. the mind brings hope to the heart. Let's

  21. say that together. Truth in the mind

  22. brings hope to the heart. Say it one

  23. more time. Truth in the mind brings hope

  24. to the heart. This is the way God

  25. designed it. God designed it so that as

  26. we come to learn of him, we see that he

  27. is a God who is sovereign over all

  28. things. That he knows the beginning from

  29. the end of everything. And he comes and

  30. he says, "Come and learn of me that you

  31. may grow in faith and in knowledge and

  32. listen to this in joy and in peace." So

  33. this morning as we come to this text in

  34. first Peter, we really really want to

  35. see and to hear what he has for us.

  36. First of all, notice in the review,

  37. notice the review here in the context of

  38. this. We're studying this little letter

  39. of first Peter. For those of you who are

  40. here for the first time, this will help

  41. you. There's a little letter called

  42. First Peter in the back. It's written by

  43. the Apostle Peter, and it's written to

  44. Christians spread throughout the first

  45. century in the Mediterranean world. And

  46. they're living under persecution.

  47. They're living in a hostile environment.

  48. Notice this. Peter's overarching theme

  49. is holy living. Live a holy life amid

  50. these two things: suffering and even

  51. persecution.

  52. Suffering and persecution. He's saying,

  53. "Don't give up living for God, living a

  54. holy life in the midst of suffering and

  55. persecution." This letter answers the

  56. question, "How should we live? How

  57. should we live?" And he's telling us,

  58. "This is how you live." So Sheridan

  59. Hills in 2026 this this letter is

  60. helping us how to live our lives, how we

  61. should think, how should we feel, how

  62. should we obey his plan. Now for review,

  63. chapter 1 all the way to chapter 2:12

  64. was about this. Christians are a chosen

  65. people set apart to God to declare God's

  66. excellencies while we are living as

  67. keywords sojourners or exiles in what

  68. kind of culture? A

  69. >> hostile culture.

  70. Indeed, a fallen world is hostile to the

  71. holiness of God. And so it is against

  72. it. It is posed against it. And we see

  73. that. Look at chapter 2:es 13-2 is what

  74. we finished last week. So this is

  75. another section. We looked at several

  76. sermons from this. Christians are to

  77. live a holy life in regards to let's say

  78. them out loud together. Government,

  79. employment,

  80. marriage, and relating to what?

  81. >> The body of Christ. That's right. So

  82. last week we looked at how do we relate

  83. in submission to government, employment,

  84. marriage. We looked at all of those, but

  85. then into the body of Christ. How should

  86. Christians act? And do you remember with

  87. me last Sunday we looked at that passage

  88. where Peter goes back to the Old

  89. Testament. He goes back to Psalm 34 and

  90. he quotes from Psalm 34 in his letter

  91. reminding us that God is the one who

  92. deserves our obedience. He deserves our

  93. praise. We don't revile when we are

  94. reviled. We live knowing that God is in

  95. charge and that he sees everything and

  96. he is just and we can depend upon his

  97. justice and we do that even within the

  98. context of the body of Christ. Well,

  99. today we start a new section and it's

  100. from chapter 3 and verse 13 and it and

  101. it will go through 411. Chapter 4 and

  102. verse 11 and fill this in. Christians

  103. can respond to suffering in a godly way.

  104. Christians can respond to suffering in a

  105. godly way.

  106. Over the last week,

  107. in fact,

  108. last Sunday, we saw some disturbing

  109. images in our culture.

  110. We saw a beautiful church um in a

  111. beautiful building

  112. in peace

  113. in their worship service. and we saw

  114. that piece of their worship service

  115. hostily interrupted.

  116. Um, I won't comment on all of the

  117. controversy around

  118. um those events in the political

  119. climate, but what we saw was a very

  120. Bible teaching church, a very solid

  121. group of brothers and sisters. Um,

  122. Pastor Ben knows two of the pastors of

  123. that church, went to seminary with two

  124. of the pastors of that church, and they

  125. were hostily

  126. um attacked

  127. um in worship to the point where their

  128. worship service was um brought to a a

  129. halt and uh had to be completely shut

  130. down and interrupted.

  131. This isn't the first time that we have

  132. seen that. Um we live in a large country

  133. um with over 300 million people. Uh we

  134. have a short history um of only 250

  135. years. But nevertheless,

  136. we have seen a little bit of this from

  137. time to time.

  138. But let me remind you, as much as we

  139. felt some of the oppression of that and

  140. the and the disgust of people attacking

  141. those in worship,

  142. um, let me remind you that there are

  143. churches all around the world that

  144. cannot even meet.

  145. They are prohibited from meeting because

  146. if they do, they will go to jail.

  147. There are churches that meet out in the

  148. countryside under the trees, even in the

  149. dead of winter amidst the snow. They

  150. meet where they are able to come

  151. together. Some I've been to worship

  152. services in warehouses in the middle of

  153. the night.

  154. I when I was young was at a warehouse in

  155. um a city in the Czech Republic before

  156. the Iron Curtain came down and there

  157. were 200 college students all day long

  158. that trickled into this building and

  159. they waited all day long so there wasn't

  160. a large group arriving at once and

  161. around 11:00 at night when everybody

  162. finally was there we started singing and

  163. then there was started to be teaching

  164. and we taught and we sang um until about

  165. 4:00 in the morning when everybody

  166. started quietly dispersing because they

  167. were not permitted to meet. This morning

  168. the title of the message is living

  169. secure

  170. amidst hostility.

  171. Living secure amidst hostility. Um, I

  172. want us to look and I want us to see

  173. what God's word says about when the

  174. culture turns upon the church because

  175. that was certainly the case in first

  176. Peter in the first century. Notice the

  177. central theme of this message. Living

  178. secure amidst hostility is possible

  179. because true Christians, two things,

  180. one, belong to Christ and are destined

  181. for glory. That's what we're going to

  182. read in just a minute. True Christians

  183. belong to Christ and they're destined

  184. for glory. That's what we've been seeing

  185. already in First Peter. We see multiple

  186. places. If you just go back and read the

  187. first three chapters, this takes you 10

  188. minutes. You can see that because we are

  189. Christs and because he has an eternal

  190. plan, we can remember that even though

  191. we live in a culture, in a world, a

  192. fallen world that is sometimes very

  193. hostile to our faith. Look at this. So

  194. they are called to fill it in suffer

  195. well.

  196. We are called to suffer well. You say,

  197. is there such thing as suffering well?

  198. Oh yes, you can suffer poorly or you can

  199. suffer well. We are called to suffer

  200. well and we are called to have no fear

  201. of persecutors. That's what we're going

  202. to read today. It's possible to have no

  203. fear of persecutors

  204. and to bear, listen to this, to even

  205. bear hopefilled or hopeful witness in a

  206. world that what?

  207. Misunderstands them.

  208. They misunderstand. Satan has blinded

  209. their eyes. So, he's confused them.

  210. In fact, during um starting point this

  211. morning, we talked about the fact that

  212. in the Roman Empire during this time,

  213. there were numerous accusations made

  214. against the first century church. Um, so

  215. the first century church is when Jesus

  216. was with us. He dies on the cross for

  217. our sins. He rises again. He stays. He

  218. teaches for a few more days and then he

  219. ascends to the father and then during

  220. the Pentecost feast. The Holy Spirit

  221. comes upon the church. Thousands of

  222. people begin to be saved. So it goes

  223. from a few hundred to thousands upon

  224. thousands are coming to faith over and

  225. over again and the gospel begins to go

  226. out from Jerusalem. Part of the reason

  227. it goes out from Jerusalem is because

  228. there was a great persecution against

  229. those new believers in Jerusalem. And so

  230. the Romans rose up, the Jewish religious

  231. people rose up and they started

  232. persecuting the church. Well, those

  233. those Christians had to flee for their

  234. lives. So they went to other places,

  235. they went to other regions. Eventually

  236. they went to other cities around the

  237. Mediterranean. So formerly Jewish, now

  238. Jewish believers, and they some were

  239. Greeks that were become believers. And

  240. so they're rising in persecution as the

  241. numbers continue to increase of those

  242. who have discovered Jesus who God is

  243. calling. There's a movement of that. The

  244. Roman Empire begins to notice and the

  245. Roman Empire begins to feel threatened.

  246. The Roman Empire doesn't like this. So

  247. the Roman Empire over the next few

  248. hundred years begins a tremendous

  249. persecution against this group called

  250. the way or those who are little Christs.

  251. Christian means little Christ. And so

  252. that was at first used in a derogatory

  253. sense.

  254. And so as we see this occur, what what

  255. is the heart? What is the what is the

  256. way in which Christians are to respond

  257. to this? Now, some of the accusations

  258. when I say here in a world that

  259. misunderstands them, that really is what

  260. was happening.

  261. Listen to this.

  262. Christians were accused of being

  263. atheists.

  264. You say, "WHAT? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING

  265. ABOUT?" NO, THEY BELIEVE in God. We

  266. believe in God. The Bible's all about

  267. God. No, they were accused of being

  268. atheists. Why? Because they didn't

  269. believe in the Roman gods.

  270. They rejected the whole Roman gods that

  271. were based upon Greek gods. They

  272. rejected the gods that were made of

  273. idols, the gods that were called upon

  274. for various things. The the the

  275. Christians said, "No, I I do not worship

  276. those gods." The Christians did not

  277. believe that the emperor

  278. was a god. They rejected Caesar as Lord,

  279. as in God.

  280. The other accusations that were made, do

  281. you know any of the other accusations?

  282. They were accused of being incestuous.

  283. Why were they accused of being

  284. incestuous?

  285. Because there's a lot of our Christian

  286. teaching that talks about loving our

  287. brothers and sisters in Christ. They

  288. misunderstood

  289. They they said that's that's crazy. Even

  290. in the Roman Empire, they they knew that

  291. incest was bad, even though that there

  292. were certain emperors in other

  293. situations that were as a result of

  294. incest incestuous. Um but and I know

  295. parents, you got a little bit of

  296. explaining to do um this afternoon, but

  297. they were accused of being incestuous.

  298. There were many things that were

  299. misunderstood in the scripture. And you

  300. know what? That has not changed

  301. in this day and time.

  302. The hostile world around us that does

  303. not know Christ, that rejects Christ,

  304. that does not want God ruling over their

  305. life, will look at Christian doctrines

  306. very often and say, "Look at this. You

  307. believe this." And they will be wrong.

  308. They misunderstand the nature of God.

  309. They misunderstand the nature of the

  310. cross. They misunderstand the nature of

  311. salvation.

  312. Notice this last statement that is under

  313. that. Peter is teaching Christians to

  314. live faithfully

  315. when obedience to Christ brings friction

  316. rather than favor.

  317. He is he is calling Christians to live

  318. faithfully when obedience to Christ

  319. brings friction rather than favor. You

  320. know, there was a day and time in the

  321. United States, in our culture, when if

  322. somebody was a good, strong Christian,

  323. that was seen as a as a wonderful

  324. um accolade for their life. They they

  325. that that was greatly respected.

  326. Um then it came to a period where it was

  327. kind of neutral. I don't really care.

  328. In our culture, in this day and time, in

  329. certain pockets of our culture, in

  330. certain broad swaths of our culture,

  331. when someone says that they're a

  332. Christian,

  333. that is um that is not seen as something

  334. that's favorable.

  335. uh one of my pastor friends here in

  336. South Florida um a few years ago,

  337. especially when a lot of the LGBTQ

  338. things took off and became very very

  339. forceful and very popularized.

  340. He said there there were people in his

  341. church that were persecuted because they

  342. went to their church.

  343. Um their church was simply known as

  344. being a church that taught the Bible. We

  345. have people in our church who have been

  346. um persecuted, who have been chastised

  347. or who have missed promotions. Um some

  348. who have even been let go

  349. because of their faith in Christ. There

  350. were certain policies that were brought

  351. forth in the in the community um of

  352. their work and they were told you got to

  353. do this and if you don't do this you got

  354. to find another job. and some of them

  355. decided to find another job.

  356. So, we live in a world that

  357. misunderstands our faith. In fact, one

  358. of the ways that you see that is when

  359. sometimes um we're called haters

  360. because we disagree with something. It

  361. doesn't mean that we hate

  362. um someone who disagrees with us. It

  363. simply means that we don't believe that.

  364. We we believe that that's that that's

  365. wrong. We should not confuse

  366. disagreement with hate. But that's what

  367. a hostile world does. It turns it. It

  368. seeks to amplify it and it seeks to take

  369. what is good and call it evil and what

  370. is evil and call it good. That's what

  371. Isaiah 5 says.

  372. And so very similarly um sometimes the

  373. accuses accusation is made that you are

  374. phobic that you're phobic about

  375. something in society. Well no I'm not

  376. afraid of it. I simply disagree. I

  377. simply say no there's a there's another

  378. way. Don't don't call me phobic about

  379. it. You can recognize that I disagree.

  380. And so very often the world

  381. misunderstands

  382. or in their misunderstanding

  383. they will seek to bring a hostile

  384. attack. So we are not so very far

  385. different from the people of this

  386. letter. Does that make sense? My point

  387. here is that in the first century the

  388. church was under pressure. Let me tell

  389. you that through all the centuries in

  390. time since then, the church has been

  391. under pressure. And why is that? Because

  392. the church lives as God's people in a

  393. fallen world. And we too are fallen, but

  394. we simply have been redeemed by the

  395. blood of the lamb. And so we see a

  396. different calling. Peter is saying,

  397. "Don't live like the world. Live with

  398. love. Live with grace. Live with care.

  399. Live with the gospel. Um don't revile

  400. when reviled. Don't attack when

  401. attacked. Live with grace in this. So,

  402. how do we live securely amidst

  403. hostility? Let's read the passage and

  404. see it in verse 13. Look what it says at

  405. the top of the page in the box on your

  406. page in front of you. Everybody look at

  407. verse 13. Now, who is there to harm you

  408. if you are zealous for what is good?

  409. We're going to see what that means in

  410. just a second. Verse 14, but even if you

  411. should suffer for righteousness sake,

  412. you will be blessed. Have no fear of

  413. them, nor be troubled, but in your

  414. hearts, honor Christ the Lord as what?

  415. as holy, always being prepared to make a

  416. defense to anyone who asks you for the

  417. reason for the hope that is in you. Yet

  418. do it with gentleness and respect. Verse

  419. 16, having a good conscience so that

  420. when you are slandered,

  421. those who revile your good behavior in

  422. Christ may be put to shame. Verse 17,

  423. for it is better to suffer for doing

  424. good if that should be God's will than

  425. for doing evil.

  426. >> So

  427. we can suffer for doing evil or we can

  428. suffer for doing good. God has called us

  429. to notice what Peter says in this. So

  430. the first thing how to live securely

  431. amidst hostility. hostility. Number one,

  432. the normal expectation. So, here's the

  433. normal expectation. Living for Christ

  434. sometimes brings suffering. We need to

  435. see that in verse 13 and in verse 14,

  436. what Peter is saying. When you live for

  437. Christ, you can expect to suffer. In

  438. fact, look at verse 13. What does this

  439. mean? Now, who is there to harm you if

  440. you are zealous for what is good? The

  441. idea is this. Even in a secular society,

  442. most of the time when somebody is really

  443. doing something good, when when somebody

  444. is going and helping put out a fire um

  445. with a house, somebody's going and

  446. rescuing someone, someone is going and

  447. sees someone, a family that suddenly

  448. doesn't have anything. And so they

  449. gather around, they gather the

  450. neighbors, they say, "They need food.

  451. They need some clothing. They've lost

  452. everything. Let's let's help them out."

  453. Most of the time when somebody sees

  454. someone doing something good, they go,

  455. "Oh, that's good." And you can even be

  456. very very much against God, you can be

  457. hostile to the things that are spiritual

  458. and God. But even somebody who's hostile

  459. to God, when they see somebody doing

  460. something kind and good that is helpful,

  461. typically they will say, "Ah, that's a

  462. good thing." So that's part of what he's

  463. saying in verse 13. Look what it says.

  464. Now, who is there to harm you if you are

  465. zealous for what is good? That's that's

  466. the common outside public perception.

  467. But look at verse 14. Now, he clarifies

  468. something a little bit more. But if you

  469. should suffer, and here it is, for

  470. righteousness sake, you will be blessed.

  471. So, he's saying when you're out there

  472. helping in public society with the

  473. accepted good, you know, most likely

  474. they're going to leave you alone. But

  475. when you are standing with God in

  476. righteousness in a hostile world, notice

  477. what he says here. If you should suffer

  478. for righteousness's sake, he's saying,

  479. remember,

  480. God sees that and God will take care of

  481. you. God is going to bless you. So, a

  482. few things to notice here. Number one,

  483. Peter acknowledges that people usually

  484. do not persecute noble behavior. That's

  485. verse 13. But in verse 14, look what

  486. number two says. Then Peter recognizes

  487. sometimes

  488. you will suffer for doing good and not

  489. just doing good, but you could put out

  490. there to the side as well standing with

  491. God. So when the culture begins to

  492. reject God in certain things that it

  493. believes, when you stand with God on

  494. those things that the culture doesn't

  495. like, you can expect that sometimes you

  496. are going to suffer.

  497. And then at the end of uh 14A, what we

  498. call 14A, the first part of that verse,

  499. notice here in verse 13 and number

  500. three, Peter reminds that God sees

  501. and God rewards. Look what it says

  502. there. It says in verse 14, "But even if

  503. you should suffer for righteousness

  504. sake," underline it there, "you will be

  505. blessed."

  506. You see, we saw that last week at the

  507. very end of the message. Last week, we

  508. said that God is a just God. He sees the

  509. righteous. He sees the wicked. And he

  510. his face is toward them. Now, I want you

  511. to al also notice down here. Look at

  512. Matthew 5 10-12. And I think I have this

  513. um on the screen. Maybe I don't. Maybe.

  514. Yes. Yes. There we go. Look at Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  515. chapter 5. This is on the screen. This

  516. is not on your page. Look what it says.

  517. This is Jesus. And this is Jesus

  518. preaching really his first sermon called

  519. the sermon on the mount. And so it was

  520. recorded um it's Matthew chapter 5 6 7

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  521. goes into 8. But notice this at the very

  522. beginning of the sermon on the mount. Um

  523. notice what Jesus says. Look at verse

  524. 10. Blessed are those who are persecuted

  525. for what?

  526. Isn't that exactly what we just read in

  527. first Peter? So Peter is keying off the

  528. teaching of Christ that he heard from

  529. Jesus. Peter would have been there

  530. listening to this sermon, the sermon on

  531. the mount. In fact, the sermon on the

  532. mount was probably preached many times

  533. to different crowds. Um that's part of

  534. the reason um that they were able to

  535. record it and write it down. But those

  536. were the teachings of Jesus. That's the

  537. way it went. A teacher would travel

  538. around and teach. So, one of the main

  539. messages that Jesus would teach is this

  540. sermon on the mount. Look what he says.

  541. Blessed are those who are persecuted for

  542. righteousness sake. And look what it

  543. says after that. For theirs is the

  544. kingdom of heaven. You see, you will be

  545. blessed. Does this not echo what Peter

  546. is writing? And then look at verse 11.

  547. Blessed are you when others revile you

  548. and persecute you and utter all kinds of

  549. evil against you falsely

  550. on my account. So for the name of Jesus

  551. when you suffer he says you're going to

  552. be blessed. Look at verse 12. This is

  553. amazing. Read it out loud. Rejoice and

  554. be glad for your reward in he is great

  555. in heaven for so they persecuted the

  556. prophets who were before you. So Jesus

  557. is even saying lift up your eyes to the

  558. economy of God. Lift up your eyes to the

  559. ways of God. Lift up your eyes to that

  560. scale. They may mock you in the

  561. classroom. They may mock you at the

  562. restaurant. They may mock you there in

  563. the dorm room. um in your college. But

  564. listen, the Lord knows and the Lord is

  565. the one that ultimately says and look at

  566. this, your reward where

  567. >> in heaven.

  568. Your reward in heaven

  569. is great. So a lot of times the

  570. Christian is always being called to

  571. don't look at the here and now, but be

  572. looking at the hereafter.

  573. many of the blessings. Now, this is a

  574. real cause of problems for many people

  575. because they're sitting there coming to

  576. Christianity saying, "Well, I want all

  577. the blessings now. I want the healing

  578. now. I want the I want the financial

  579. help now. I want the right relationships

  580. now."

  581. And what we learn in scripture is the

  582. life of faith in a fallen and hostile

  583. world. Some of those blessings are going

  584. to come now. But some of those blessings

  585. aren't going to come till we are safely

  586. home in heaven. And that is for

  587. eternity. Not 70, 80, or 95 years if

  588. you're fortunate.

  589. This is the picture of eternity. This is

  590. the picture of Christ. He's always

  591. lifting up our eyes to the eternal. So

  592. young person, don't just be planning

  593. your life for the next 10, 20, 30, 40,

  594. 50 years. start looking at your life as

  595. getting ready for heaven. That's a much

  596. safer way for you to plan your life is

  597. to say what counts for eternity, not

  598. just this mere little kingdom. Safely

  599. turn over the page there and let's see

  600. the second major thing here. So the

  601. first one was the normal expectation and

  602. that's suffering. The second one is this

  603. command, the central command in all of

  604. this. And we see it in verse 14. In the

  605. middle part of verse 14, look what he

  606. says in 14. But even if you should

  607. suffer for righteousness sake, you will

  608. be blessed. That's the first part.

  609. Here's the second part.

  610. Have no fear of them,

  611. >> nor be what?

  612. >> Nor be troubled. Verse 15. But in your

  613. hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy. Um

  614. this is the picture. Honor Christ the

  615. Lord as holy. So number one this is very

  616. very cool that Peter what Peter does

  617. here again he goes back to the Old

  618. Testament. We're going to see that here.

  619. Look at first Peter look at number one.

  620. Peter once again echoes back to the Old

  621. Testament to God's word for the Jewish

  622. people and he quotes and he references

  623. Isaiah 8:es 12-13.

  624. So many of his readers would have known

  625. this verse. Many of his readers would

  626. have seen this and they're starting to

  627. see God's word applied from their Old

  628. Testament scriptures into their New

  629. Testament life. Look what it says here

  630. in verse 12. Do not call conspiracy all

  631. that this people calls conspiracy. And

  632. do not fear what they fear, nor be in

  633. dread. Isa Isaiah is saying, stop with

  634. all the fear stuff.

  635. Look at verse 13. But the Lord of hosts,

  636. him shall you honor as holy. Let him be

  637. your fear. Let him be your dread.

  638. Now, this is this this is the picture

  639. that you're not to fear man. Instead,

  640. fear God. Instead, fear the one who made

  641. all things. And that is that is not a

  642. bad thing to fear. That is a wonderful

  643. thing to fear because if you rightly

  644. fear the Lord, you will rightly be

  645. blessed by him. It's people who don't

  646. fear God that get in trouble with God.

  647. But the people who rightly fear him as

  648. holy and just

  649. find him, listen to this, to be gracious

  650. and kind.

  651. And so this is what Peter is calling us

  652. to do. To remember, you don't need to

  653. fear man. You need to fear God.

  654. So we fear God, not your opponents. That

  655. is the big picture here. Fear God, not

  656. your opponents. Notice this line that is

  657. underneath number one. Ancient Israel

  658. feared conspiracies and threat. We too

  659. can do that if we're not careful. We can

  660. run around afraid of all the things that

  661. the culture is going to do. In fact, you

  662. know, right now we have a relatively

  663. conservative view of the Constitution, a

  664. relatively conservative view of freedom

  665. of religion. We have a relatively

  666. conservative view of those things.

  667. Allowing uh religion to flourish. Um we

  668. have that at a national level. We have

  669. that at a state level. We have that in

  670. the state of Florida um with quite a bit

  671. of protection and quite a bit of

  672. freedom. But let me just remind you that

  673. there will be more elections

  674. and we may wind up with political

  675. leaders and we might wind up with even

  676. local leaders that are very hostile to

  677. what we believe and we'll say you're

  678. actually evil for believing the truths

  679. of the Bible and you shouldn't believe

  680. those. And not only that, you shouldn't

  681. believe those, you can't believe those.

  682. I mean, we have people all over the

  683. world that the truths of the Bible are

  684. not allowed to be taught. In fact, in

  685. Canada right now, there are numerous

  686. places in scripture that if you read

  687. them in public, you can be jailed. You

  688. can go to jail if you read Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  689. chapter 1 and Romans chapter 2 in Canada

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  690. publicly.

  691. I mean the I mean this is Canada very

  692. much like us. Um and our Canadian

  693. friends are the ones who are telling us

  694. you you're not going to believe what

  695. we're going through here. Um I I have

  696. friends that are in ministry in Canada

  697. and they're saying it's it's very

  698. strange where we live and how we do

  699. this. And so I just I'm just saying to

  700. you we could become very fearful of

  701. those things. And this is what Peter is

  702. saying not to do. You don't run in all

  703. the conspiracies of fear. You don't run

  704. in those things. Um instead, you fear

  705. God, not your opponents. Does that make

  706. sense? Look at the next thing that we

  707. see here. Now, I I do want you to

  708. remember Isaiah 8:12 through13. Look at

    Isaiah 8:12–13

  709. this. I'm going to read it again. Um

  710. look what it says there because that's

  711. the next point here that's really

  712. beautiful. Um he's quoting from the Old

  713. Testament and he says,"Do not call

  714. conspiracy all that this people calls

  715. conspiracy and do not fear what they

  716. fear nor be in dread." And then look at

  717. verse 13. Read it out loud together.

  718. Read verse 13. But the Lord of hosts,

  719. him you shall honor as holy. Let him be

  720. your fear. Let him be your dread. So the

  721. emphasis there in the way that that's

  722. constructed in both Hebrew and Greek is

  723. him. It's saying don't you you need to

  724. recognize that he is the issue not them.

  725. Now what is so cool what Peter does here

  726. notice number two notice that Peter

  727. applies this directly to Christ. He is

  728. applying the Isaiah passage 750 years

  729. written 750 years before Jesus was born.

  730. He is applying it directly to the person

  731. of Jesus. And so this is what you look

  732. what he says. But in your hearts honor

  733. Christ the Lord as holy. That's what he

  734. writes in first Peter. And it sounds

  735. very much like what is written in Isaiah

  736. 8. He says him you shall honor as holy.

  737. Peter writes but in your hearts honor

  738. Christ the Lord as holy. Same same

  739. structure same emphasis. And so this is

  740. what you call if you're studying the

  741. Bible listen to this. This is what you

  742. call high christologology. It's a very

  743. high view of Christ. Christologology is

  744. the study of Christ. And so when we look

  745. at this as Christians, when we study the

  746. Bible and we develop our understanding

  747. of what the Bible says, we have

  748. different areas of theology that we pay

  749. attention pay attention to. And one of

  750. those is who is Christ? What is his

  751. nature? What is his purpose? Where does

  752. he come from? Where does he go? What

  753. does he do in all of this? Who is

  754. Christ? who who and the early church

  755. really dealt with that in the councils

  756. that were early on. Um and so here we

  757. see the apostle Peter nailing it. He got

  758. it wrong when when he did not have the

  759. Holy Spirit. There were so many things

  760. that he said that Peter was correcting

  761. him. At one point the Lord looked at

  762. Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan."

  763. I mean, Peter just was the openmouth

  764. insert foot disciple. But we see that

  765. change when Peter stands up on Pentecost

  766. filled with the Holy Spirit and begins

  767. preaching the gospel. And Peter becomes

  768. a very powerful voice getting it right

  769. the vast majority of the time whenever

  770. we see that there were some things that

  771. they had to work through between Paul

  772. and and some of the others um later in

  773. Jerusalem. But we see Peter just nails

  774. it on this. He is applying Isaiah 8 to

  775. the life of the Lord Jesus. You see what

  776. Isaiah said about Yahweh, Peter applies

  777. to Jesus. And this is what we need to

  778. do. We need to sanctify Christ as Lord

  779. in our hearts. We need to sanctify him

  780. as holy. Notice number three. Notice

  781. that the fear is not eliminated, but it

  782. is redirected.

  783. It's redirected. It's not that you

  784. shouldn't fear at all, but the idea is

  785. you fear the right thing. And we see

  786. that in Proverbs 29, Luke 12, 1 Peter 1.

  787. Those are great passages for you to go

  788. look up. You see, we are called to not

  789. fear man, but we are called to fear God.

  790. And when we have the fear of God,

  791. there's no need to fear man because we

  792. recognize that he knows exactly what

  793. he's doing. You see, pressure that's

  794. hostile pressure on your life will

  795. reveal what you fear or what you respect

  796. or what you value the most. And so when

  797. pressure comes, when persecution comes,

  798. you're going to find out what you fear.

  799. Are you afraid of those who are

  800. persecuting you? Or are you saying,

  801. "Nope, I fear the Lord, and because I

  802. fear the Lord, I don't need to fear

  803. them. The Lord knows what he's doing. I

  804. can rest in him. And that brings a

  805. totally different way to live. That's a

  806. secure way to live. Notice Roman numeral

  807. number three. We see not only the

  808. central command, but now we see the

  809. missional calling. This is the missional

  810. calling that we see in what Peter's

  811. writes. It's a hopefilled, gentle, clear

  812. witness.

  813. He's calling you to witness for Christ.

  814. He's calling you in the midst of the

  815. hostility, in the midst of the the

  816. struggle, in the midst of the injury to

  817. you. He's calling you to proclaim Christ

  818. because that brings about an attention

  819. by the world that they say, "Why is he

  820. saying this? Why is he like this? How

  821. does he have this confidence?" Look what

  822. it says in verse 15. And it says always

  823. being prepared to make a defense to

  824. anyone who asks you for the reason for a

  825. reason for circle it the hope the hope

  826. that is in you yet do it with gentleness

  827. and respect. Now here's the idea of what

  828. Peter's getting at for us. Number one,

  829. Christian hope should be evident.

  830. Evident enough to provoke questions.

  831. Christian hope should be evident enough

  832. to provoke questions. Hope is not merely

  833. internal. It can be seen when under

  834. pressure. It can be seen when under

  835. pressure. I have shared with you before

  836. that one of the businesses that Marcy

  837. and I ran when we lived in Africa was a

  838. tourism business that would take um

  839. guests to various ancient Roman ruins

  840. across North Africa. And one of the

  841. places that we would take people to is

  842. the Colosseum, the arena actually um in

  843. Carthage, Tunisia. And it was in that

  844. arena, and I've shared pictures of this

  845. before. Um the ruins of the arena are

  846. still there. It's a large oval arena.

  847. And it was an arena where games would be

  848. played. It was an arena where there

  849. would be um all kinds of dramatic sport

  850. events and there would be dramatic

  851. reenactments of battles. There would be

  852. all kinds of Roman um sport and Roman

  853. enactments there. Well, during the

  854. second, third, and fourth centuries, the

  855. persecution of Christians is what was

  856. the pregame show.

  857. It was, "Oh, they got some Christians

  858. that they're going to take care of today

  859. and before the big gladiators come out

  860. and before the other entertainment, the

  861. main show." So, the Christians were part

  862. of the pre-show. And they would bring in

  863. leopards and lions and bears from other

  864. exotic places. They would bring in all

  865. kinds of other things. There were

  866. heinous ways in which they would torture

  867. Christians during a few hundred years

  868. during that time. Well, there was um two

  869. women named Perpeta Perpeta and

  870. Felicitya.

  871. Those two women, one of them, Perpetua,

  872. had just had a baby and her father who

  873. was an unbeliever kept saying to her,

  874. "Perpeta,

  875. would you just would you just recant and

  876. say that you believe in the gods? If you

  877. say you believe in the gods, they will

  878. let you go. And her father had the baby,

  879. would take the baby out of the prison

  880. cell and run the baby around to women in

  881. the town who had had a baby and could

  882. nurse the baby. And he would come back

  883. and he even held the baby to her one

  884. time and said, "Your baby needs you.

  885. Would you please re recant from this?"

  886. And she said, "Father, you're asking me

  887. to disavow my belief in Jesus, the

  888. savior of my soul. I cannot do that."

  889. And it was Perpetua who and Felicia who

  890. were indeed um martyed on the sands of

  891. that arena floor along with many others

  892. eventually. And it was interesting that

  893. there was a young lawyer in the crowd

  894. that day.

  895. He was up in the stands amidst the

  896. thousands of spectators and he was

  897. sitting there and hearing about this and

  898. he would he would hear about all of the

  899. people who were being put to death as

  900. Christians and he said this is very

  901. interesting. Their blood flows out of

  902. their body and into the sands of the

  903. arenas across the Roman Empire.

  904. And yet there's more and more and more

  905. Christians.

  906. They're growing. they're not

  907. diminishing. The more we persecute them,

  908. the more Christians pop up. And he

  909. started to say, "Why?

  910. Why would they do this? Why wouldn't

  911. they just recant?

  912. Why do they believe this? What is it

  913. that they believe?"

  914. Because he said this, "Their blood is

  915. seed."

  916. Their blood is seed. the more we

  917. sacrifice, the the more we the more we

  918. shed their blood, the more they

  919. multiply. And so that's what this

  920. passage is talking about. Look at what

  921. it says there underneath Roman numeral

  922. number three, the scripture. It says,

  923. "Always being ready to make a defense to

  924. anyone who asks you for a reason for the

  925. hope that is in you, yet do it with

  926. gentleness

  927. and respect."

  928. So our faith can provoke questions

  929. that sometimes people will ask. So this

  930. verse basically is saying number two,

  931. fill this in when someone asks why or

  932. how do you have hope? Maybe it's amidst

  933. your cancer. Maybe it's against amidst

  934. persecution. Maybe it's against, you

  935. know, things falling apart in your life

  936. and your family member looks at your

  937. life and they go, "How how do you have

  938. hope? How are you even joyful in the

  939. midst of this trouble?" Here's what it

  940. is. Be ready. That's what he says.

  941. Always be prepared to make a defense. Be

  942. ready. And he also says, "Be gentle. do

  943. it with gentleness

  944. and be humble. That is respectful.

  945. It's not be angry. We don't need an

  946. angry witness for Christ.

  947. What we're called to be is humble and

  948. respectful.

  949. And so when we respond

  950. with humility and love and grace, we see

  951. something happen that begins to God uses

  952. God uses this testimony um for following

  953. him. Notice the very last line here.

  954. What we see from all this is this. The

  955. manner in which we respond

  956. matters as much as the message.

  957. The manner matters as much as the

  958. message because that is what they see as

  959. the grace and the peace in our lives for

  960. what is true.

  961. Roman num rum number four. As we look at

  962. verse 16, look what this says. The moral

  963. safeguard. What is the moral safeguard?

  964. Here it is. A clear conscience. A clear

  965. conscience before God. And that's what

  966. Peter calls us to have. Having a good

  967. conscience. That's a conscience that's

  968. clear. having a good conscience so that

  969. when you are slandered those who revile

  970. your good behavior in Christ, you see

  971. this is your Christian behavior

  972. may be what? Put to shame. Now that may

  973. be that they are put to shame in this

  974. life or it may be that they are put to

  975. shame in the next life. We don't know.

  976. But we see here that

  977. you're to behave in such a way that they

  978. can't they can't accuse because of the

  979. manner in which you respond. So number

  980. one, what we see in this is first of all

  981. the fact that Christians will be

  982. slandered. It's it's not if but it is

  983. when.

  984. So Christians will be slandered. Look at

  985. the passage again. having a good

  986. conscience. So that circle the next word

  987. when

  988. you are slandered.

  989. If you're a Christian, you can expect to

  990. be slandered for righteousness.

  991. When you are slandered, those who revile

  992. your good behavior in Christ may be put

  993. to shame. Number two, the goal is not

  994. vindication,

  995. but faithfulness. God is calling us to

  996. be faithful. He's not calling us to go

  997. um be vindicated for our belief. You

  998. see, fill it in there. God knows how to

  999. manage your reputation. He knows how to

1000. take care of your reputation.

1001. And a clear conscience before God is

1002. greater than public approval. You It

1003. doesn't matter what everybody else

1004. thinks. It matters what God thinks. And

1005. so when we're faithful to him, that's

1006. what these passages are calling us to do

1007. and to be. So the moral safeguard is a

1008. clear conscience before God. Um because

1009. if you're at peace with the Lord, my

1010. friends, it doesn't matter whether

1011. you're at peace with everybody else when

1012. it comes to standing with him for what

1013. is right. Um and I love this. This

1014. anticipates the divine reversal that God

1015. knows how to take care of things. Look

1016. at Romans 12 19. It says, "Beloved,

1017. never avenge yourselves, but leave it to

1018. the wrath of God. For it is wr written,"

1019. and again, Romans is quoting from the

1020. Old Testament, "Vengeance is mine. I

1021. will repay, says the Lord."

1022. Now, that relieves you of having to

  1023. straighten somebody out.

1024. I mean, that this passage right here can

1025. help you stay out of a lawsuit.

1026. this passage right here can say, you

1027. know, um if if if you can, you just say,

1028. "Well, the Lord is going to take care of

1029. them." Um and I would encourage you not

1030. to do that in a in preparatory WAY LIKE,

1031. "YEAH, GOD'S GOING TO GET HIM, AND I

  1032. CAN'T WAIT."

  1033. That's part of last Sunday's sermon.

  1034. Don't don't have the attitude of I

1035. cannot wait to see the look on your face

  1036. when he

  1037. that's not the attitude that we're

  1038. called to have.

  1039. We had an OBGYn

  1040. who lived in Afghanistan

  1041. for 25 years.

1042. She went from village to village taking

  1043. care of women.

1044. She delivered thousands of babies

  1045. over those 25 years.

  1046. and

1047. she and her driver were going to a

  1048. village one day and

  1049. a

1050. group of bandits of Taliban came and

1051. stopped her car, pulled the driver out

1052. of the car, shot him in the head, rolled

1053. him over in the ditch,

  1054. and um

1055. she was in the back seat with the

1056. Taliban. They needed to go to another

1057. town. They took her as far as the other

1058. town. They were trying to figure out who

1059. she was and what they would do with her

1060. and eventually they pulled her out of

1061. the car, shot her in the head and left

  1062. her beside the road,

  1063. killed her.

1064. And I remember that Marcy and I were

1065. actually living in North Africa when

  1066. that happened.

1067. And we were we were heartbroken.

1068. And we just thought, and I remember that

  1069. day sitting there thinking,

1070. those guys who did that, whoever they

  1071. were,

1072. they have no idea what they just did.

  1073. This woman of God

1074. when she could have been wealthy in the

1075. United States is living in the most

1076. hostile of circumstances, helping people

1077. who no one else is there to help them.

1078. doing it in the name of Jesus,

1079. sharing the good news of Jesus Christ

  1080. with these people

  1081. and these vile men

  1082. just came

1083. and got her car for a few hours

1084. and snuffed out her life.

1085. And I just started thinking, they have

1086. no idea what's going to happen to them.

1087. They have no idea of Romans 12:9

    Romans 12:9

1088. that the Lord says, "Vengeance is mine.

  1089. I will repay."

1090. And do you know by the grace of the Holy

1091. Spirit that day? You know what the Lord

  1092. said to me

1093. in the midst of my hurt and anger,

1094. the Lord said, "Pray for those men.

1095. Pray that they will come to Jesus

1096. because what they have coming is so

  1097. horrible.

1098. Pray that they will realize what they've

1099. done. Pray that they will come to see

1100. the Savior for all he is. And do you

1101. know that there are examples there are

1102. examples all across the world where

  1103. those who were Saul

1104. persecuting the church became Paul's

1105. redeemed by the blood of the lamb.

1106. I have a friend named Adel in eastern

  1107. Algeria

1108. and he was a terrorist. He was a

1109. persecutor of the infidels. That would

1110. be us. you're an infidel in their mind,

1111. the Americans, he was on his way to

1112. Afghanistan to fight. This was over 20

1113. years ago. And the Lord, I won't go into

1114. the details of the story, but the Lord

1115. came and got a hold of Adal's life.

1116. Today, Adal is a powerful voice, a

1117. powerful voice for the sake of the

  1118. gospel in North Africa.

  1119. You see friends,

1120. God knows and sees what to do.

1121. He is in charge of this. He has divine

1122. reversal and he either can bring

1123. vengeance or listen to this, he can

  1124. bring salvation.

1125. So we need to remember that he is in

1126. charge. And this is Roman numeral number

1127. four or excuse me, number five, the

1128. governing principle. It is better to

1129. suffer for doing good and you could put

1130. out there to the side than doing evil

1131. because you will suffer for doing evil.

1132. But it will be better to suffer for

1133. doing good. So young people look at this

1134. with your life. It's better for you to

1135. suffer for living for Christ than for

1136. you to suffer for living against Christ.

1137. Look what the title Look what the

1138. scripture says. The text says, "For it

1139. is better to suffer for doing good, if

1140. that should be God's will

1141. than for doing evil." So sometimes it is

1142. God's will. The the governing principle

1143. is this. Number one, notice that God is

1144. sovereign over your situation and your

  1145. suffering.

1146. It it very much look at this. It should

1147. if that should be God's will. God knows

1148. he's in charge. Sometimes suffering is

  1149. his will.

1150. And there's people in this room right

1151. now as you're writing those words,

  1152. you're going, "Do I believe that? I

1153. don't believe that. That's not my view

1154. of God. I was raised in a Christian

1155. tradition that said all suffering is

1156. from Satan, and this is not possible

1157. that a good God of mercy, grace, and

1158. love for his children would cause them

1159. to suffer." And I would say to you,

1160. you've not read the Bible carefully.

1161. This is part of our faith. This is part

1162. of what we have to come to learn to deal

1163. with and to trust God with that he is

1164. good. He knows what he's doing. And

1165. sometimes we suffer under his hand. And

  1166. sometimes it seems unbearable.

1167. Sometimes it seems so impossible

1168. that there could be any good, that there

1169. could be any value in this. But what we

1170. come to see as children of God is that

1171. he is a sovereign God and he can take

1172. what was meant for evil and use it for

  1173. good.

1174. >> This is the God of the Bible.

1175. This is the God of scripture.

  1176. And it's a hard truth, but it's a good

  1177. truth.

1178. You see, you can fight it, but it's

  1179. better to accept it.

1180. If you want to fight it, you can fight

1181. it, but it's just far better to accept

  1182. it. You see, there's there's a governing

1183. principle here. Look at number two. Not

  1184. all suffering is equal.

1185. There's what we could call deserved

  1186. suffering and there's undeserved

1187. suffering. will deserve suffering is the

1188. discipline or the consequence that

1189. comes. So that's when we do the wrong

1190. thing and then we suffer the

1191. consequences for it. And God can even

1192. use that. He can use the broken arm or

1193. he can use the broken you know you did

1194. the wrong thing and this is what comes.

1195. He can use you know you commit fraud and

1196. you go to jail. Okay. So now I'm being

1197. disciplined in this. I did the wrong

1198. thing and now I'm sitting in jail. And

1199. then what's going to come of that? Well,

  1200. if you're if you're God's, some good

1201. things can come out of that. If you're

1202. not God's, you just experience all the

1203. pain. Oh, how about this? Undeserved

1204. suffering. This is when you didn't do

1205. fraud. This is when you didn't do the

1206. wrong thing, but then you suffer. What

1207. we learn is is that God is discipling

  1208. you.

1209. He is training you. He is bringing you

1210. along. He's teaching you to hold loosely

1211. to the things of the world and to look

1212. toward heaven and to trust in him.

1213. So we we we see this this picture of

1214. it's so much better to suffer for doing

1215. good than for doing evil. Look at number

  1216. three with me.

1217. This points us to Christ's example. This

1218. points us to Christ's example which we

1219. will see in verse 18 next week. So this

1220. is a precursor to coming for next week.

1221. In verse 18 we see that Christ suffered

1222. for us once and for all righteously and

1223. redemptively and we can learn to walk in

  1224. his steps.

1225. That's the picture that is there. And we

1226. saw it also in 1 Peter 2:21 that there

    1 Peter 2:21

1227. is an example that goes before us in our

  1228. suffering.

1229. So when you are persecuted,

1230. when you are suffering hardship, whether

1231. it's undeserved or what we we would call

1232. deserved, when we are experiencing these

1233. things, what we can know is is that

  1234. Christ endured all things

1235. yet without sin. So he remained holy in

1236. this. He endured all things providing

1237. for us an example to look to so that we

1238. can be at peace. So that we can notice

1239. the the title of the message. So that we

  1240. can live securely

1241. amidst the hostility of the world. That

1242. is that's the title that is here.

1243. So application, how do we apply this?

1244. How do we think about this? This is

1245. worth your time this afternoon, maybe at

1246. lunch. This is worth your time um by

1247. yourself. This is worth your time maybe

1248. this evening before you go to bed.

1249. Notice number one. Have you come to the

1250. place of honoring Christ as holy in your

1251. heart? The Isaiah 8 passage and the

1252. first Peter passage. Do you honor Christ

1253. as holy? Do you honor him? This is like

1254. saying, "Is he lord of your life?

1255. Is he Lord over you? Or are you Lord

  1256. over you?

1257. Notice number two. Who does your

1258. behavior indicate you fear more? God or

  1259. people?

1260. Who do you what when you live your life,

1261. who do you I mean, are you seeking to

1262. please your boss? And so when he tells

1263. you to do something that's really wrong,

1264. really evil, whatever, you're not

1265. supposed to do that. Are are you seeking

1266. to please him? Are are you worried about

1267. your financial things? So, you're

1268. compromising and other things and so

1269. you're kind of afraid of the world and

1270. people and what if we don't make it are

1271. or are you honoring God?

1272. What does your behavior indicate? Number

  1273. three,

1274. are you willing to suffer well for the

  1275. name of Christ?

1276. For some of us, we're so afraid of being

  1277. persecuted.

1278. We're so afraid that somebody would do

1279. something against us. We say, "Well, I

  1280. just don't know what I would do." I

1281. mean, that would just be the end of that

1282. that would be the worst thing of all is

1283. if that what if they took away my house

1284. or what if they took away this? What if

1285. they took away my job? What if they came

1286. and they did this and they did that? You

1287. know, well, first of all, we're not

1288. really facing very much of that. Most of

1289. us in this room, but some in this room

  1290. have faced that.

1291. Are you willing to suffer? Well,

1292. look at the eternal picture. That's what

1293. Peter's calling us to do.

1294. Are we willing to suffer for his

1295. purposes? How about number four?

1296. How can you be ready to explain your

1297. hope if and when you are asked?

1298. How can you be ready? That's a good

1299. thing for you to think about.

1300. I'm going to say to you that God wants

1301. you to be ready and being close to him

1302. and being in his word and being

1303. submitted to him is how you are ready to

1304. suffer. Well, and you can be ready

1305. to answer when people say, "How are you

1306. doing this?" You see, it's when

1307. it's when the cancer report comes out

1308. and the rest of the family is around you

  1309. and they're all upset and they're

1310. looking at you while you lay there in

1311. the bed and you go, "Hey, you know what?

1312. It's okay." And they're going, "What are

1313. you talking about? The guy just said you

  1314. had stage four."

  1315. And you're sitting there going, "It's

  1316. okay."

  1317. and they're weeping and you're saying,

1318. "The Lord knows. He's in charge. He

  1319. hasn't left his throne.

1320. He's saved me by his grace. And every

1321. day that I live is for him. I don't want

1322. this cancer. I don't want to go through

1323. this. But I know that the Lord is in

  1324. charge."

1325. I do know this. For true believers,

  1326. the Holy Spirit

1327. gives grace in the moment.

1328. You may look at that and you go, "I'm

1329. not sure what would happen if I lost my

1330. child. I'm not sure what would happen if

1331. this." Well, you know what? Don't worry

1332. about that which hasn't happened yet.

1333. Stay plugged into growing with the Lord.

1334. Worship him in your days. Worship him

1335. every week, every day of your life.

1336. Honor and obey him. And you know what?

1337. At the right time, he will be with you.

1338. Yay. Though I walk through the valley of

1339. the shadow of death, what does it say? I

1340. will fear no evil, for thou art with me.

1341. Your rod and your staff, they comfort

1342. me. You prepare a table before me in the

  1343. presence of my

  1344. >> enemies.

  1345. My cup runs over.

1346. Surely goodness will follow me all the

1347. days of my life and I will dwell in the

  1348. house of the Lord

  1349. >> forever. Amen.

  1350. >> You may stand.

  1351. Oh father,

1352. oh father, would you allow this word?

1353. Would you allow this word to change us?

  1354. Transform us.

1355. Lord, would you drive out fear?

1356. Fear of suffering, fear of people,

1357. fear of the future, fear of

  1358. circumstances.

1359. Lord, I pray that this word

1360. would rule and reign over our hearts.

1361. That this truth that we've heard today

1362. would come and affect the way we live

1363. our lives. that we would be a willing

1364. and ready witness in the darkest of

1365. hours. That we would see that you may be

  1366. at work

1367. in a lawyer's life out in the crowd

1368. watching the blood flow into the sand

1369. wondering why would they do this?

1370. Lord, you may be at work in a family

1371. member's heart as they watch us suffer.

1372. Oh Lord, would we remember that you're

  1373. the God who sees

1374. and that you're the God who rewards.

1375. So Lord, for the burdens of our heart,

1376. whether they be a from a hostile world

1377. or simply from the results of the fall,

1378. Lord, our sick or weward children,

1379. Lord, our regrets from the past,

1380. Lord, whatever it may be,

  1381. may we entrust

1382. these concerns to you and live with hope

1383. for all that you've given us. In the

1384. wonderful name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
