  1. This morning we're going to be looking

  2. at the blessings of missions giving. You

  3. know, it's amazing that God has called

  4. us to be involved with his work. And

  5. it's kind of interesting that we often

  6. talk about praying and giving and going

  7. for the sake of the gospel. Um that

  8. missions would be going on that the

  9. world would be hearing of a savior who

  10. has died. That is the message. The

  11. message is someone has died for you. You

  12. can live. You can live eternally because

  13. someone has died for you. And that is

  14. the gospel message. And we would say

  15. that to you in this room this morning.

  16. There is no hope for our lives. There's

  17. no hope for our salvation. There's no

  18. hope for the millions of sins that

  19. Andrew Coleman has committed without

  20. someone paying for those sins. I can't

  21. pay for them because I am not a holy

  22. sacrifice. You can't pay for them for my

  23. sins. You're not a holy sacrifice.

  24. There's only one that can pay for our

  25. sins. And it was the sacrifice sent by

  26. God. It was Jesus Christ, the son of

  27. God, who died on the cross for our sins

  28. that we may know him. And the our job is

  29. to tell the world that. And um there's

  30. been 2,000 years of the church declaring

  31. the fact that Christ has come and he has

  32. died for our sins. And so we want to

  33. look at this issue of missions. And

  34. here's the interesting part about

  35. missions that it's not only the call for

  36. us to pray for that and it's not only

  37. the call for us to to go. We stood we

  38. had a bunch of people stand up through

  39. the last 60 years of this church. We've

  40. sent many people out as career

  41. missionaries. We've had hundreds of

  42. people go as missionaries from our

  43. church. Um, Marcy and I were two of

  44. those people. We I grew up in this

  45. church. I married Marcy in seminary. She

  46. was from Brazil. And one of the reasons

  47. I married her was because she shared the

  48. same calling that I felt was to go to

  49. people who had never heard. And so we

  50. went and we we had done many trips uh

  51. short-term trips and then those

  52. short-term trips turned into a long-term

  53. trip, a 10-year trip. And we were

  54. overseas for 10 years until she had a

  55. massive heart attack and almost died.

  56. And we had to come home and we had to

  57. come home. And Miss Jean Manning was one

  58. of the people who looked around and

  59. said, "Well, Andy's home from the

  60. mission field. Why didn't he become our

  61. pastor?" So, you can blame it on Jean

  62. Manning. Um, she was one of those people

  63. who had that bright idea. Um, it had

  64. never occurred to me to be the pastor of

  65. my home church. And I'll guarantee you

  66. until that happened, it had never

  67. occurred to anybody else either.

  68. Guarantee. Especially when I was in high

  69. school. I'll guarantee you it didn't

  70. occur to anybody. But God and his

  71. providence, 25 years later, here I

  72. stand. And we've been here 15 years. And

  73. our church has been a mission-minded

  74. church since the beginning. And I'm so

  75. thankful for that. Um, I want us to look

  76. deeply at something this morning. And I

  77. pray that every person in this room will

  78. hear from God as we read um from his

  79. word in Philippians chapter 4. But

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  80. notice here with me, the blessings of

  81. missions giving. That's the title of

  82. this, the blessings of missions giving.

  83. And um, let's just kind of start off

  84. with a statement. This is on the screen.

  85. This is not on your outline. Uh look at

  86. this first statement here. The letter to

  87. the Philippians was written by the

  88. Apostle Paul to the church at Philippi.

  89. Okay. So, those of you who are new to

  90. us, maybe you've never really studied

  91. the Bible, nobody's encouraged you to

  92. open the Bible and read it. I just want

  93. to say this that there's a letter called

  94. Philippians and it's it's very short um

  95. just a few chapters long but it's a very

  96. important letter. It's one of the gems.

  97. It's one of the favorite letters in fact

  98. of the New Testament and it was written

  99. by the Apostle Paul. um he was first

  100. called Saul when he was persecuting the

  101. church and then the Lord got a hold of

  102. his life and converted him to faith in

  103. Jesus and he went from persecuting the

  104. church to proclaiming and planting

  105. churches and so that's who he was. So

  106. let's look at this next statement here.

  107. And this is before we read the passage,

  108. I want us to look at the background of

  109. it so you understand it a little bit

  110. more. Look at this. Paul was a scholar.

  111. Remember he was a Pharisee. Listen to

  112. this. Trained in the school of Galial.

  113. That means he was a very intelligent

  114. scholar um as a Jewish Pharisee. Trained

  115. in the highest of the schools um in

  116. Jerusalem. He was a scholar. He became a

  117. pastor. He was a theologian as a result

  118. of that. But we see in the long course

  119. of his whole life, he was mainly fill it

  120. in a missionary. He was mainly a

  121. missionary. And um I want us to remember

  122. a little bit about the ancient world. If

  123. you're new to studying the Bible, this

  124. map will help you out and help you

  125. understand a little bit. First of all,

  126. this is Africa down here. Here's the

  127. Middle East. All the trouble is right

  128. over here this morning um with Iran and

  129. uh everything going on over here and in

  130. the Gulf. But here we see Jerusalem.

  131. Here's the Mediterranean Sea. What is

  132. that right there? What what country is

  133. that?

  134. >> That's right. There's Italy and there's

  135. what? What's that?

  136. >> Italy and Sicily got in a fight. Italy

  137. kicked Sicily out of sight. You remember

  138. that? That's how you know Italy is the

  139. boot. Sicily is the island here. Okay.

  140. So Rome, center of the world when this

  141. was written. This was the New York City

  142. of the world right here. Rome was it.

  143. This is where the emperor for the for

  144. the uh whole empire, Roman Empire. If

  145. you ever seen gladiator and all of that,

  146. that's that the picture of Roman period.

  147. This was the New Testament era. Well,

  148. Jesus comes. He's born in a town outside

  149. of Bethlehem. He grows up there.

  150. Jerusalem is the center where Abraham

  151. had come to sacrifice Isaac. This was

  152. the center of faith. God chose to touch

  153. down and use that. Eventually to 1500,

  154. 2,000 years later, the Messiah finally

  155. comes. That's Jesus. He dies on a on a

  156. cross is is sacrificed on a cross just

  157. outside of Jerusalem. The disciples and

  158. all of their cohorts lived right in this

  159. area. That little blue spot right there

  160. is the Sea of Galilee, north of

  161. Jerusalem. Everything in the New

  162. Testament happened right here in the

  163. Gospels. In the Gospels. And then the

  164. the gospel starts to go out and across

  165. and it goes across the North Africa and

  166. it goes across that. Marcy and I used to

  167. live right here in Algeria when we were

  168. missionaries. So here we see the gospels

  169. going out. Now I want you look at the

  170. next slide. This helps you understand.

  171. Those are Paul's missionary journeys. It

  172. was amazing. Paul traveled over 15,000

  173. miles as he was a missionary. He

  174. traveled 8,000 miles on foot. That means

  175. he walked and walked and walked. Listen

  176. to this. He traveled if 20 miles a day.

  177. That means just from the record of the

  178. New Testament, from the book of Acts and

  179. from the letters, we see that Paul,

  180. listen to this, he walked 435 days. Now,

  181. not all at once, but over the course of

  182. his life, he walked 435 days. He he um

  183. he went through all kinds of troubles

  184. and hardship. Listen to this. I'm going

  185. to read this statement. And as you look

  186. at that map, you just kind of listen to

  187. these words. After his conversion, Paul

  188. served his Messiah for more than 30

  189. years by faithfully preaching salvation

  190. in Christ. He was making disciples and

  191. planting churches everywhere he went. At

  192. first, he was doubted and feared and

  193. avoided by Christians. Why was he

  194. doubted

  195. and feared and avoided by Christians?

  196. >> Because he had spent years persecuting

  197. them. He would round them up and take

  198. them to prison. He stood there and held

  199. the coats while Steven, the first

  200. martyr, was stoned to death for

  201. converting to Christ. So Christians were

  202. afraid of him at first, but eventually

  203. that that gave way to realizing, "No,

  204. it's true. He's been changed."

  205. At times he had Christians, Jews, and

  206. Romans attacking him all at once.

  207. As the decades went by, he would be

  208. whipped, beaten, jailed, tried,

  209. convicted, shipwrecked, snakebit,

  210. stoned, left for dead, run out of town

  211. after town, and abandoned by friends

  212. many times.

  213. He walked thousands of miles in the

  214. heat, and he slept in the cold. He was

  215. often hungry and always in pain. He

  216. spent years of his life in various

  217. prisons until Neero finally beheaded him

  218. as a treasonous Roman citizen.

  219. And yet at the end of his life, Paul

  220. would write this little letter that

  221. mentions

  222. joy

  223. 16 times.

  224. And he wrote it from prison. Amazingly

  225. here is not found bitterness, anger,

  226. despair, disillusionment or resentment.

  227. We only see a humility, a gratitude and

  228. an attitude that transcends the troubles

  229. of life through the joy of having

  230. Christ. This is amazing. So this is Paul

  231. traveling all across the world. And

  232. notice this next slide here. This one,

  233. he's a missionary and the first church

  234. that he planted in Europe was Philippi,

  235. the church at Philippi.

  236. And uh look at this. He had a wonderful

  237. experience with them there. The first

  238. person that he ever led to Christ in

  239. Europe was a woman named Lydia. And she

  240. would prove to be a friend of he and all

  241. of his co-workers for a long time. They

  242. supported the church at Philippi

  243. supported his missionary journeys for

  244. years after he left. When he writes this

  245. letter, he's now in prison in Rome. But

  246. they are not ashamed of him. As we'll

  247. read, they continued to send him. Notice

  248. the two things that they sent him. What

  249. are the two things that they sent him?

  250. Financial support and what's the other

  251. one?

  252. Workers. Okay, that was very weak. Look

  253. at the screen. What are the two things

  254. that they sent him? Financial support

  255. and workers.

  256. My friends,

  257. financial support by itself does not win

  258. people to Jesus.

  259. It takes people

  260. to share the gospel with people. And so

  261. the Apostle Paul was calling for help

  262. very often. And what did they do? They

  263. sent help. Sheridan Hills, the

  264. missionaries that we support, they need

  265. financial support. And listen, what else

  266. do they need? They need help. They need

  267. workers. And so, we see that the

  268. Philippian church did that. Notice this,

  269. the letter to the Philippians, it

  270. contains many loved passages from the

  271. Bible. I mean, just a couple of them are

  272. um listen to this passage. You've heard

  273. this. I can do all things through Christ

  274. who strengthens me. that comes from

  275. Philippians. Um we we see numerous other

  276. places I have loved you with a great

  277. affection that in Philippians chapter 1

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  278. we see that we see over and over rejoice

  279. in the Lord always and again I say

  280. rejoice let your forebearing spirit be

  281. made known to everyone the Lord is at

  282. hand. Listen to this. In Philippians, it

  283. says, "Be anxious for nothing, but in

  284. everything by prayer and supplication

  285. with thanksgiving, let your requests be

  286. made known to God. And the peace of God

  287. which surpasses all human comprehension,

  288. it will guard your hearts and your minds

  289. in Christ Jesus." Those are beloved

  290. verses. There's many beloved verses from

  291. this little letter written in a jail. It

  292. is often called the letter of

  293. encouragement

  294. written from a jail cell. Listen, look

  295. at this. They had much persecution. The

  296. Philippian church had much persecution

  297. and economic hardship. So they were not

  298. in a rich area. There were people around

  299. them that were rich, but the church

  300. itself was not. And there was

  301. persecution. They were really, really

  302. chastised for being Christians. And yet,

  303. look at the next one. They were

  304. passionate about missions giving. They

  305. were passionate about missions giving.

  306. You say, "How in the world do you know

  307. that, Pastor Andrew?" Well, let me show

  308. you how I know that. Look at the next

  309. part here. The Philippian church was a

  310. fill it in. Missiongiving church. They

  311. gave financially for missions. They

  312. supported missions in Corenth. That was

  313. a godless city and yet there was a

  314. church there and they planted a church

  315. there. They sent people to there and

  316. they sent money so that it could be a

  317. church. They supported missions in

  318. Thessalonica

  319. and they supported missions in Rome. So

  320. we we see throughout um the book of Acts

  321. and we see in these letters evidence of

  322. that. You can go and look those things

  323. up. Well, let's read our passage.

  324. Philippians chapter 4. So, this is the

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  325. very end of that little letter. This is

  326. the end of it. And I want you to see how

  327. he ends the letter of encouragement.

  328. Um, so flip. Now, you're turning over

  329. your page,

  330. but the scripture that we're about to

  331. read is on the front page in the box.

  332. So, you need the front page. You know,

  333. the screen is fine, but the the page is

  334. better. Okay,

  335. go to Philippians 4:14 on the front

    Philippians 4:14

  336. page. Look what it says.

  337. Paul writes, "Yet it was kind of you to

  338. share my what?

  339. >> My trouble." H

  340. and you Philippians, you yourselves know

  341. that in the beginning of the gospel when

  342. I left Macedonia, now that's Greece,

  343. no church entered into partnership with

  344. me in giving and receiving except you

  345. only. Hm.

  346. Even in Thessalonica, you sent me help

  347. for my needs once and again.

  348. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the

  349. fruit that increases to your credit.

  350. Verse 18, I have received full payment

  351. and more. I am well supplied, having

  352. received from Apapraditis the gifts you

  353. sent. So they would have sent the gifts

  354. with a guy that was trustable. So and

  355. his name was Apaproditis. He went to and

  356. took the gifts to them and then he got

  357. sick. He got sick while he was there and

  358. he nearly died. And so Paul eventually

  359. was able to send him back home to

  360. Philipp to Philippi. And he said, "Man,

  361. he's alive. Praise God. Thank you."

  362. Verse, look at verse 18. I have received

  363. full payment and more. I am well

  364. supplied, having received from

  365. Apaproditis the gifts that you sent, a

  366. fragrant offering, a sacrifice

  367. acceptable and pleasing to God. Verse

  368. 19, and my God will supply every need of

  369. yours according to his riches and glory

  370. in Christ Jesus.

  371. Verse 20, there's a doxology here. To

  372. our God and father be glory forever and

  373. ever. Amen. It's a praise statement.

  374. That's what a doxology is. It's a

  375. statement of praise. And he's he's

  376. saying that because of what they have

  377. done. So it's like he's saying, "You did

  378. this for me. Praise the Lord." Look at

  379. verse 21. He ends his letter with this.

  380. Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. Now

  381. remember, saints are anyone who has been

  382. saved by Christ. It's not a statue in

  383. Rome. It's not people who have done

  384. certain things contrary to what some

  385. denominations teach. That's not

  386. biblical. The Bible calls anyone who has

  387. been forgiven of their sins through

  388. faith in Jesus Christ a saint. That

  389. means he has made them holy. It's

  390. amazing. This is the gospel. Greet every

  391. Christian, every saint in Christ Jesus.

  392. The brothers who are with me greet you.

  393. So he had Christians there with him in

  394. prison. All the saints greet you,

  395. especially those of Caesar's household.

  396. We'll look at that in a minute. Verse

  397. 23. Read it out loud together with you

  398. with me. These are the last words of the

  399. book of Philippians. Read it out loud.

  400. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be

  401. with your spirit. Amen.

  402. So, let's look and see from this this

  403. box, from this passage, the blessings

  404. that come. And for those of you who are

  405. new to us, let me explain to you what we

  406. do. We read a main text like we just did

  407. and then we go see what it says and we

  408. our main points from the sermon come

  409. from that. So, we point out where it

  410. was. So, we're going to see some verses

  411. that come from that. So

  412. what is this that you see the blessings

  413. of missions giving? What are the

  414. blessings of missions giving? What are

  415. the blessings of mission given missions

  416. giving for the Philippian church 2,000

  417. years ago? And what are the blessings

  418. for the for missions giving for Sheran

  419. Hills and for you can put your name in

  420. there. What what are the blessings that

  421. we experience? I want us to see it from

  422. this text. Number one, missions giving

  423. blesses the missionary. Missionsgiving

  424. blesses the missionary. You say, "Well,

  425. that that should be obvious." Look at

  426. verse 10. He says, "I rejoiced in the

  427. Lord greatly that now at length you have

  428. revived your concern for me. You were

  429. indeed concerned for me, but you had no

  430. opportunity." So that's back in verse

  431. 10. He's saying, "I I've I knew that you

  432. were concerned for me. You had no

  433. opportunity. there was maybe no way to

  434. get it to us, but but you were concerned

  435. and you eventually acted on that and

  436. that he rejoiced in that. It was a

  437. blessing to him. Look at verse 10 or

  438. excuse me, verse 14. Yet it was kind of

  439. you to share in my trouble. That's where

  440. we started just a minute ago in our

  441. text. He's saying it was kind of you. He

  442. was blessed by their kindness to share

  443. in his trouble. How did they share in

  444. his trouble? They were concerned for him

  445. and they sent money to help with some of

  446. the troubles that were there. It's very

  447. very strange. If you were a Roman

  448. citizen and held under house arrest,

  449. there would be sometimes um you would be

  450. held um in a house and the Roman

  451. government didn't pay for that house.

  452. You still had to rent the house. You

  453. still had to do other things. You would

  454. be held um in in captivity in that way.

  455. Um, sometimes you would be um in a

  456. prison and you even had to pay a prison

  457. debt and if you didn't have money to do

  458. that, you didn't eat. Some would starve

  459. to death or become very very sickly

  460. because they couldn't be given enough.

  461. But um people could give so that your

  462. trouble would be less

  463. in that we that's not how we do prison

  464. in America. Uh some of you have lived in

  465. countries where they do do prison that

  466. way. If the family members don't really

  467. bring food, if the family members don't

  468. bring medicine, the person in prison

  469. will die. Well, that's similar to this.

  470. It was kind of you to share in my

  471. trouble.

  472. And then verse 18, and you'd have to

  473. look at either the front sheet or look

  474. at the screen if they have that, but

  475. look at verse 18. He says, "I have

  476. received full payment and more. I'm well

  477. supplies ha supplied having received

  478. from Apaproditis the gifts you sent a

  479. fragrant offering sacrifice acceptable

  480. and pleasing to God. So who is first

  481. blessed in this?

  482. The missionary.

  483. Now this is amazing.

  484. Look at my bullet points that are right

  485. here underneath this. When you give to

  486. missions, you step into

  487. the trench with the missionary.

  488. Some of you are young. You're not sure

  489. what we mean by a trench.

  490. On a battlefield, the way you are not

  491. killed instantly by a flying bullet is

  492. that somebody digs a trench and you're

  493. able to hide down in the trench. So the

  494. bullets are flying over your head.

  495. When a bomb goes off nearby, unless it

  496. lands right on you in your trench, the

  497. ground uh protects you from the flying

  498. shrapnel and the explosion or the

  499. whizzing bullets. So the trenches are

  500. where the battles are fought.

  501. In World War I, it was the the battle of

  502. trenches. Horrible, horrible war.

  503. Even right now in Ukraine, there's

  504. trenches all over the country that have

  505. been dug out where they fight one

  506. another from those trenches. It's called

  507. being in the trenches. When you join

  508. someone in your trouble, there's this

  509. phrase of saying you join into the

  510. trench. You join into the battle with

  511. them.

  512. And so I use this language here. When

  513. you give to missions, you step into the

  514. trench with the missionaries.

  515. You're you're with them in their

  516. trouble. Your gift may never preach a

  517. sermon, but it strengthens the one who

  518. does.

  519. It supports the one who does.

  520. You see, missions giving is how a church

  521. refuses to abandon

  522. those on the front lines.

  523. You know, it's something when people go,

  524. "Oh, yeah, we'll pray for you."

  525. And that's all.

  526. There's no s. And then the question is,

  527. "Do you really?"

  528. You know, when we say we pray for

  529. someone and we don't, do you know what

  530. that's called?

  531. It's called a lie.

  532. We need to be careful about that.

  533. If we say we pray for someone, we ought

  534. to really pray for them.

  535. And sometimes the safest thing to do is

  536. to stop right then and pray for them.

  537. We got a couple of guys in our church.

  538. We'll talk about something and they're

  539. quick to say, you know, let's pray about

  540. that. And they're they're not showing

  541. off. They're not trying to be super

  542. spiritual. They're just trying to be

  543. faithful.

  544. Don't show off with that. Jesus really

  545. came down hard on that. But when we

  546. genuinely enter into prayer for one

  547. another, God is blessed by that. He's

  548. honored even as we'll see. Number one,

  549. let's read it out loud. Number one is

  550. what? Missions giving blesses the

  551. missionary. That was very weak. Number

  552. one, let's read it. Missions giving

  553. blesses the missionary. Number two,

  554. missions giving blesses the giver.

  555. Number two, missions bless giving

  556. blesses the giver. Look what he says

  557. here in verse 19. And my God shall

  558. supply every need of yours according to

  559. his riches and glory. You have given to

  560. me. And here's what he knows. I know

  561. that God is going to take care of your

  562. needs.

  563. In fact, I've also included here Acts

    Acts 20:35

  564. 20:35. Paul too is speaking, but he's

  565. not speaking to the Philippians. He's

  566. speaking to the elders at the church at

  567. Ephesus. And look what it says here.

  568. Read it out loud together with me. What

  569. does Paul say there as he speaks to the

  570. elders at Ephesus. Let's read it out

  571. loud. Remember the words of the Lord

  572. Jesus? How he himself said, "It is more

  573. blessed to give than to receive." Jesus

  574. said that. So when we say number two is

  575. missions giving blesses the giver.

  576. That's really true.

  577. We are blessed when we give.

  578. To be sure we're not talking about

  579. prosperity gospel. Prosperity gospel

  580. says, "Oh, you give and God will give to

  581. you." And the p gospel preacher says,

  582. "Oh, you give to me and God will give to

  583. you." And that's a real popular notion

  584. in this day and time. um false gospel,

  585. false idea. We're not talking about

  586. prosperity gospel. We're talking about

  587. basic things that are very very true in

  588. scripture. You see, we need to remember

  589. this. God is no man's debtor.

  590. God is no man's debtor. You know what

  591. that means?

  592. He doesn't owe anyone

  593. anything.

  594. He doesn't owe anyone

  595. anything.

  596. But here's what we see. When his people

  597. invest in his mission, he promises not

  598. luxury

  599. but sufficiency.

  600. He does not promise indulgence, but he

  601. does promise provision.

  602. And he does not promise earthly riches,

  603. but he promises riches in glory in

  604. Christ Jesus. That's what it says in

  605. verse 19. Riches in glory in Christ

  606. Jesus. In fact, up there underneath that

  607. uh underneath number two where there are

  608. verses, and my God shall supply all your

  609. needs according to his riches in glory

  610. in Christ Jesus. Underline that. Riches

  611. and glory in Christ Jesus. You know what

  612. that means? That means things that go

  613. way beyond money

  614. because money is not the true thing.

  615. That's not the ultimate thing that you

  616. need. I know some of you believe that.

  617. You believe that money will solve

  618. everything. No,

  619. there's a lot of things money won't

  620. solve. Money won't solve cancer in

  621. itself. I mean, I know you can get

  622. medical care, but there's some cancers

  623. no money, no amount of money can solve.

  624. I know that there's anxiety. There's a

  625. lot of people that are just really

  626. anxious and they have lots of money.

  627. Money won't solve anxiety. I mean, the

  628. Xanax bill for billionaires is just as

  629. big as the Xanax bill for everybody

  630. else.

  631. My friends, there are riches in Christ.

  632. Being forgiven of our sin, being given

  633. the hope of heaven, being given real,

  634. real, genuine relationships,

  635. that is what Christ came for. And there

  636. are riches that go beyond what money can

  637. ever buy.

  638. Notice this with me. The third bullet

  639. point there. The safest place to put

  640. your resources is in to to put your

  641. resources is in the hands of a

  642. missionary God.

  643. This is a God who loves missions. Jesus

  644. said, "I have come to seek and to save

  645. the lost." That was his mission.

  646. Jesus was the first missionary. He came

  647. to die on the cross so that we might go

  648. free. That's a mission. He came to

  649. rescue us from hell. That's a mission.

  650. And this missionary God is the one that

  651. when you give, you're giving to a

  652. missionary God who knows all things.

  653. Look at this. You never impoverish

  654. yourself by giving to what fills the

  655. heart of God. You see, he knows how to

  656. care for your needs and reward your

  657. sacrifice. And that is not prosperity

  658. gospel. That's his promises.

  659. He knows how to care for your needs. And

  660. that's what the Apostle Paul is saying.

  661. And my God will supply every need of

  662. yours according to his riches in glory

  663. in Christ Jesus. This is the the great

  664. the missionary, excuse me, missions

  665. giving blesses the giver. Well, there's

  666. the third one. Missions giving blesses

  667. those who are without Christ. Those

  668. without Christ. Fill that in. Those

  669. without Christ.

  670. In verse 17, we see it. In verse 21 and

  671. 22, we see it. In verse 17, it says,

  672. "Not that I seek the gift,

  673. but I seek the fruit."

  674. Right below the fruit on your outline

  675. outline right there. those without

  676. Christ.

  677. That's what he's talking about. The

  678. fruit is those who come to faith in

  679. Christ. The fruit is those who believe

  680. upon Christ. That's what he's seeking.

  681. He doesn't want the gift for himself. He

  682. wants to be able to continue doing the

  683. work. And this is a fruit that increases

  684. to your credit. He's saying God sees

  685. this.

  686. God recognizes your involvement with

  687. what's going on. Look at verse 21-22.

  688. Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The

  689. brothers who are with me greet you.

  690. Verse 22, look what it says. All the

  691. saints greet you, especially those of

  692. Caesar's household. Now, who is holding

  693. him in prison?

  694. Caesar. Is Caesar a good little

  695. Christian? No. I mean, eventually it's

  696. Nero. and Nero beheads Paul. So Caesar's

  697. house, Caesar's himself is extreme

  698. ungodliness, wickedness, evil. But

  699. Caesar has all these people in his

  700. household that take care of him. There's

  701. servants, there's guards, there's cooks,

  702. there's whatever, child care, there's

  703. tutors and everything else. Just like

  704. any world leader has a whole entourage

  705. of people around him. What is hysterical

  706. here is that the Apostle Paul is giving

  707. us a little hint to what's going on in

  708. Rome. While Rome is persecuting

  709. Christians, the people in Caesar's own

  710. household are becoming Christians.

  711. Isn't that hilarious?

  712. >> Please say yes.

  713. >> All right, that's cool.

  714. And the Apostle Paul gives them a little

  715. hint.

  716. And Paul's linked into the whole thing,

  717. probably being held very close to Caesar

  718. himself.

  719. And so he puts in here, "And all the

  720. saints who greet you, especially those

  721. of Caesar's household, it's kind of like

  722. he's saying, I'm cool with this. The

  723. Lord knows what's going on. He's the one

  724. who judges all things. I I'm cool. He

  725. He's He's working even in the one who is

  726. against us in all of this." This is

  727. amazing. Isn't the Bible amazing? I

  728. think the Bible is so amazing. You see,

  729. the Philippians, the people that he's

  730. writing to, they've gave coins. They

  731. gave silver coins in Macedonia, also

  732. known as Greece. He they gave coins in

  733. Macedonia. And pagans were becoming

  734. Christians in Caesar's palace.

  735. Most Philippians probably never saw

  736. Rome.

  737. But heaven did.

  738. Heaven saw Rome. And heaven was using

  739. the Philippians sacrifice and their

  740. gifts

  741. to support those who were sharing the

  742. gospel

  743. in that place. You see, missions giving

  744. turns earthly dollars into eternal

  745. souls.

  746. it. God takes our sacrifice, your

  747. sacrifice,

  748. and translates that

  749. into people coming to faith in Christ.

  750. It's just kind of amazing. And this is

  751. one way that the person who never

  752. becomes a missionary can still be very

  753. involved, listen, with the missionary

  754. task

  755. because they support. We see this in the

  756. Old Testament and we see this in the New

  757. Testament. This is why God's people

  758. should give sacrific sacrificially. So

  759. it's not just in their own life. And and

  760. this is this is one of the areas where

  761. you really see where somebody's heart

  762. is. That's what Jesus said. Jesus said

  763. what you do with your money reveals

  764. where your heart is.

  765. There are some people in this church

  766. that don't give anything.

  767. They'll sit there in a sermon like this

  768. and they'll say, "Amen. You preach it,

  769. Pastor Andrew."

  770. And you don't give anything.

  771. You should be ashamed of yourself

  772. because God has called you to trust him

  773. with your money.

  774. And I have a guest here for the very

  775. first time today and she and her

  776. children are having to hear me talk

  777. about money a little bit and that's

  778. okay. I would be a bad pastor if I

  779. didn't tell you the truth.

  780. I would be a bad pastor.

  781. What God calls us to do is to be

  782. faithful with everything in our life,

  783. including our provision and our money.

  784. God calls me and Marcy to do that and

  785. God calls you to do that. And if you

  786. have the attitude, well, I I'm in too

  787. much trouble. I've got too much

  788. financial. I've got too much debt. I I

  789. do that. I don't make enough money. If I

  790. made more money, I'd give. But pastor, I

  791. can't. My friends, that is not at all

  792. what we see in the Bible. The Bible says

  793. you take from what God has given you to

  794. live, and you give a portion of that

  795. back to him for the sake of the gospel.

  796. And here's the deal. It's trusting him

  797. with your with your income. It's

  798. trusting him with your expenses. And and

  799. Malachi 3:10 says, "Test the Lord in

    Malachi 3:10

  800. this and see if he will not take care of

  801. all of your needs." And that's really

  802. what we see the Apostle Paul say here. I

  803. know that my God will supply all of your

  804. needs according to his riches and glory.

  805. And so if you need to be rebuked on that

  806. this morning, I pray that my words

  807. through the power of the Holy Spirit

  808. rebukes you if you do not give. If you

  809. do not give to the regular ongoing

  810. ministry of this church that feeds you

  811. and if you do not give to missions,

  812. you should. Amen.

  813. >> I hope all of you who said amen do that.

  814. Okay. Uh I don't know how to be more

  815. clear. Um, so notice this with me. Um,

  816. number three,

  817. we've said those who are without Christ

  818. are greatly in need of hearing the

  819. gospel. And I I want you to imagine this

  820. that one day you're in heaven

  821. and someone walks up to you and says,

  822. "Hey, you don't know me.

  823. But you gave.

  824. And because you gave, I heard.

  825. You see, God knows. It says here, he

  826. knows. It's to your credit. He knows

  827. what you give and he knows how he's

  828. going to use it. But before you turn the

  829. page too much, just kind of look at that

  830. in the screen.

  831. God

  832. can cause what you give

  833. to be used to help people come to faith

  834. >> in Christ. You see, we have missionaries

  835. that need diesel fuel to put in their

  836. Land Rover to drive to the next village.

  837. And if they don't have the diesel fuel

  838. to put in, I I remember when I was a

  839. mission leader and we would be going

  840. through all of the budget with the IMB

  841. and we would say, "Okay, uh, we've only

  842. got this much. Well, they've requested

  843. this much for this many trips.

  844. Okay, but we don't have enough. We don't

  845. have what he's asking for. And so we're

  846. just going to tell Bill Kerr, you can

  847. only do 20 trips. You can't do 30 trips.

  848. Sorry.

  849. because we don't have the fuel. We don't

  850. have the money to buy the fuel.

  851. Our giving should not limit what

  852. missionaries do.

  853. Or should I say our lack of giving

  854. should not limit what missionaries do.

  855. We should give so that people can hear

  856. the gospel. Amen. Last page. We're going

  857. to go very fast here. Number four,

  858. missions giving blesses God. Missions

  859. giving blesses God. I have, look what he

  860. says, I have received full payment and

  861. more. I am well supplied, having

  862. received from Apaproditis the gifts you

  863. sent, a fragrant offering. Read it out

  864. loud together. A sacrifice acceptable

  865. and pleasing to God. You see what

  866. happens here? Your giving blesses God.

  867. When you give to missions, you're not

  868. merely funding a trip. You're offering

  869. worship.

  870. You're saying, "Lord, I trust you and I

  871. value what you value."

  872. God receives it as a fragrant offering.

  873. You can go this afternoon right out

  874. there to the side of Leviticus 1 3-9.

  875. Homework. There's homework right there.

  876. Homework should be review the whole

  877. notes, but then also go look up

  878. Leviticus. It's a fragrant offering

  879. pleasing to God.

  880. Look at this. Missions giving rises

  881. beyond budgets and becomes doxology.

  882. What is doxology? Worship.

  883. It becomes worship.

  884. It's money turned into worship. That's

  885. what it does.

  886. That you're not instead of worshiping

  887. money, you're worshiping God with your

  888. money. That's really cool

  889. because the world very often worships

  890. money and sometimes Christians worship

  891. money too.

  892. The highest blessing of missions giving

  893. is this. God is pleased.

  894. God is pleased when we give.

  895. Okay, let's be real clear. Ephesians or

  896. Philippians chapter 4. Here's the

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  897. summary recap. Let's read it out loud

  898. together.

  899. Missionsgiving blesses the missionary.

  900. Missionsgiving blesses the giver.

  901. Missionsgiving blesses those without

  902. Christ. Missionsgiving blesses our

  903. missionary God. Let me remind you our

  904. missionary God, he came on a mission. He

  905. laid down his life and he calls us to go

  906. on with that mission. So our mission

  907. Sunday picnic and auction is not mere

  908. fundraising but rather it is fellowship

  909. and partnership in the gospel and that's

  910. what the apostle Paul called it

  911. partnership with them this is worship

  912. when we give this is eternal fill it

  913. investment

  914. that we're investing in something that's

  915. not temporal but eternal

  916. and the Philippian church was not

  917. wealthy. Let's just remember where this

  918. is all going. But they were persecuted

  919. and they were pressured. They lived

  920. under that.

  921. But notice that they were passionate

  922. about sending the gospel forward. Isn't

  923. that cool? So, they didn't give from all

  924. their abundance.

  925. They gave even from their struggle.

  926. But they were faithful to give. You

  927. know, some churches didn't give. We read

  928. that some churches didn't give. He said,

  929. "You were the only church that supported

  930. me in Thessalonica. You were the only

  931. one.

  932. What about us?"

  933. What will be said of Sheridan Hills?

  934. May it be said that Sheridan Hills

  935. Baptist Church is a missionsgiving

  936. church.

  937. Amen.

  938. >> Amen.

  939. I hope and pray that you will be part of

  940. that.

  941. Would you stand to your feet with me in

  942. prayer?

  943. >> Lord, thank you for Philippians. Thank

  944. you for this little letter that speaks

  945. so clearly to our lives.

  946. Lord, I thank you that

  947. you let us see what was going on with

  948. the Apostle Paul and how he did what he

  949. did. How he bought those ship tickets to

  950. sail from place to place. How he paid

  951. for hotels

  952. or food.

  953. Lord, I think about the same things for

  954. us

  955. this morning. We have missionaries all

  956. over the world that need our support.

  957. And they not only need money, but they

  958. need help. They need people to come join

  959. them.

  960. Some to come join them permanently

  961. career. Some that need to resign from

  962. their jobs at Sheran Hills

  963. and our church family and and go.

  964. Lord, I pray that

  965. whether young or old in this room, that

  966. we would be willing to obey you,

  967. that we would go when your Holy Spirit

  968. calls

  969. when you put it on our heart to reach

  970. the lost.

  971. Lord, that we would obey.

  972. Oh, the comforts of America

  973. when there's some who have never heard

  974. of Jesus.

  975. Oh Lord, I pray

  976. that you would raise up laborers for the

  977. harvest for the wheel the fields are

  978. white.

  979. Lord, I pray that we would be able to

  980. send people from our church on trips to

  981. encourage missionaries, to encourage

  982. their children like we did in Athens

  983. recently,

  984. to encourage other pastors like we did

  985. in Colombia just last week,

  986. Lord, like we're going to do in Munich,

  987. cities of great lossness that need

  988. someone to come up and say, "Have you

  989. thought about God?"

  990. Lord, I pray that we would be a generous

  991. people,

  992. that we would be a mission-minded

  993. people,

  994. and that you would bless these efforts

  995. even today. In the wonderful name of

  996. Jesus, we pray. Amen. Two.
