  1. This morning, we're going to be diving

  2. back into our letter of first Peter or

  3. God's letter of first Peter to us. It's

  4. a letter written to elect exiles that

  5. are spread around the Mediterranean

  6. world and through the ages to us. Last

  7. week, we looked at God Cares um freedom

  8. from anxiety. God cares, freedom from

  9. anxiety. We took that one out of out of

  10. our normal progression. We jumped over

  11. into chapter five. I'm not sure why all

  12. God had us do that, but he did

  13. apparently. And this morning, we're

  14. going back to our normal progression of

  15. First Peter chapter 4, and we're going

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  16. to be looking at sharing in Christ's

  17. sufferings. Sharing in Christ's

  18. sufferings. And I want you to look at

  19. that um title there for a little bit.

  20. It's on the top of your page. Um share

  21. in Christ's sufferings. Um,

  22. you know, through the ages,

  23. especially in the last hundred years,

  24. there has been a tendency

  25. to candy coat things.

  26. And I almost went and got a few

  27. um uh pictures of candy apples. Have you

  28. ever had a candy apple before?

  29. Um, and used to when I was a kid, it was

  30. just candy apples were usually what

  31. color? What was the color of the candy?

  32. Red, right? Red. Usually you'd go to the

  33. fair and you'd see it and you'd pull on

  34. your dad and say, "Can I have one of

  35. those?" You know, and he would say, "No,

  36. it'll rot your teeth." And you'd say,

  37. "Can I have one of them?" And eventually

  38. he, you know, maybe would give in. And

  39. then they got more creative and there's

  40. all kinds of coating all over, all kinds

  41. of colors, all kinds of candy on it. And

  42. um did you ever bite into one of those

  43. three or four days later and it was a

  44. little rotten? Yeah.

  45. Well, I've thought about the fact that

  46. there are movements, trends, there are

  47. churches that candycoat Christianity.

  48. And while the true gospel is never

  49. rotten, the true gospel is healthy and

  50. good and right. And the true gospel in

  51. it own on its own stands for what it is.

  52. There's many times when people feel like

  53. they need to dress it up or they need to

  54. dumb it down.

  55. And if you're going to teach through

  56. books of the Bible, you're going to come

  57. across, you know, the next passage. And

  58. the next passage has to be dealt with.

  59. And the next passage is what forces you

  60. to look at the true reality of what all

  61. God's word says. In fact, Jesus said,

  62. "Go and make disciples." And he said his

  63. last instructions were baptizing them in

  64. the name of the father, the son, and the

  65. holy spirit. And then he says, "Teaching

  66. them by candy coating all of the things

  67. that I told you." Is that what he says?

  68. >> Make it really attractive. you know,

  69. make it palatable to the sinful heart.

  70. That's not what Jesus said. Jesus said,

  71. teaching them everything I have

  72. commanded you. And so this morning, this

  73. is one of those passages where if we

  74. were trying to candy coat Christianity,

  75. we would not teach this one.

  76. We would not preach these verses

  77. because they're confusing in a way. In a

  78. way, you're like, "Wait a minute. You're

  79. encouraging me to come follow Jesus and

  80. telling me that that's going to be

  81. really hard. And not only is it going to

  82. be sometimes really hard, but I'm

  83. supposed to rejoice in it?

  84. What's wrong with you people?

  85. Who rejoices in suffering?"

  86. Well, this is how the gospel flips human

  87. life upside down. This is how a sinful

  88. world is broken and doesn't understand

  89. the true values of God. And when we come

  90. to passages like this, we can begin to

  91. see the true Christianity

  92. without any blemish.

  93. And we get to look at a deeper view of

  94. what God calls us to. And so it's my

  95. hope this morning that you are

  96. encouraged by this. In fact, this

  97. message this morning may expose

  98. in your heart perhaps something that is

  99. missing

  100. in your relationship with the Lord. It

  101. might expose something that you have

  102. been avoiding.

  103. It might expose something that you have

  104. been afraid of. It might it may expose

  105. something that has been a deficiency in

  106. your life. And when you see it, you can

  107. come and you can embrace it and

  108. experience a richer relationship with

  109. Jesus. I hope and pray that that is the

  110. effect of this. I hope and pray that God

  111. does this in your heart. Notice with me

  112. 1 Peter 4:es 12- 19. Are you ready to be

  113. stretched a little bit? Are you ready?

  114. >> Okay, that was very weak. Are you ready

  115. to be stretched a little bit?

  116. >> All right, let's read it. Here we go.

  117. Verse 12. Behold,

  118. do not be surprised at the fiery trial

  119. when it comes upon you to test you. Did

  120. you feel that?

  121. That little stretching? What do you

  122. mean? Don't be surprised at the fiery

  123. trial. F. Can you circle those two

  124. words? fiery trial. That's pretty vivid

  125. language.

  126. I mean, the refiner's fire is what we

  127. start to see here.

  128. Do not be surprised at the fiery trial

  129. when it comes upon you. What does it

  130. say? To test you as though something

  131. strange were happening to you.

  132. But rejoice in so far as you share

  133. Christ's sufferings. That's a strange

  134. statement.

  135. That you may also rejoice and be glad

  136. when his glory is revealed. So this is

  137. talking about it's rejoicing in his

  138. sufferings now, but it's also rejoicing

  139. in his sufferings because it's going to

  140. lead to experiencing

  141. him and experiencing the rejoy when his

  142. glory is revealed. If you see, the first

  143. time he came riding on a donkey, a a

  144. beast of burden. The first time he came

  145. rejected by men. When he comes again, he

  146. will come on a great white horse. He

  147. will come from the heavens. He will come

  148. with a trumpet blast of royalty. He will

  149. come as the reigning king, not the

  150. suffering servant.

  151. And so that's what it says here in verse

  152. 13. But rejoice in so far as you share

  153. Christ's sufferings, that you may also

  154. rejoice and be glad. What does it say?

  155. Read it. When his glory is revealed.

  156. Verse 14. If you are insulted for the

  157. name of Christ, you are blessed because

  158. the spirit of glory and of God rests on

  159. you. Verse 15. But let none of you

  160. suffer as a murderer or a thief or as an

  161. evildoer or as a meddler.

  162. Verse 16. Yet if anyone suffers as a

  163. Christian, let him not be ashamed, but

  164. let him glorify God in that name. For it

  165. is time for judgment to begin at the

  166. household of God. And if it begins with

  167. us, what will be the outcome for those

  168. who do not obey the gospel of God? Verse

  169. 18, he quotes from Proverbs 11.

  170. If the righteous is scarcely saved, what

  171. will become of the ungodly and the

  172. sinner? Therefore, let those who suffer

  173. according to God's will entrust their

  174. souls to a what? faithful

  175. >> a faithful creator while doing good.

  176. Okay. Number one, do not be dis do not

  177. be surprised by suffering. It is part of

  178. God's design. It is part of God's design

  179. in a fallen world. It's just his plan.

  180. This is amazing. He's saying don't don't

  181. be surprised. Now, notice this. This is

  182. this is written to Christians.

  183. It says beloved. These are brothers and

  184. sisters. These are the people that he

  185. loves in his in his they have received

  186. the gospel. Now, a lot of what we'll see

  187. and we'll see this as we go on in this

  188. passage. There's a lot of different

  189. reasons to suffer here. We see this is

  190. written two people listen to this very

  191. important who have realized that their

  192. only hope of salvation is the fact that

  193. Jesus was the Messiah and he died as a

  194. sacrifice for our sins. He was God in

  195. the flesh came walked among us in the

  196. man of Jesus Christ and then he was

  197. crucified on a cross similar to the size

  198. and the look of that one a little bit.

  199. He was crucified on a cross all the way

  200. unto death, mocked, scorned, rejected by

  201. everyone. Everyone flees from around

  202. him. And then he's laid in a tomb and he

  203. is raised again by the power of God as

  204. if to say sacrifice accepted. He was the

  205. perfect lamb of God. These are people

  206. who believed in that. They were not

  207. confused thinking my good works are

  208. going to save me. going to Sheridan

  209. Hills is going to save me. Being a good

  210. guy, being a good daughter, being a good

  211. mother, being a good father is not going

  212. to save me. It's all found in Jesus

  213. Christ. So, it's it's about grace, not

  214. good works. Now, the good works come

  215. after we are saved in this, but it's

  216. we're not going to be saved through good

  217. works. This these are the people who

  218. received this message. Beloved

  219. Christians, true Christians trusting in

  220. Jesus, don't be surprised at the fiery

  221. trial. See, here's part of the problem.

  222. Number one here, many are surprised by

  223. suffering.

  224. There's a lot of Christians that when

  225. suffering comes, they're shocked.

  226. when suffering comes and this is really

  227. for the most part let's clarify the most

  228. of the the suffering that is talked

  229. about in this passage is the p is the

  230. suffering of persecution this isn't just

  231. suffering with cancer this isn't just

  232. suffering with a car wreck this isn't

  233. just suffering with financial troubles

  234. or a difficulty in a relation this is

  235. this is typically talking about those

  236. who are being persecuted because they

  237. are a Christian. We have people in this

  238. room, mentioned it last Sunday. We have

  239. people in this room that this week have

  240. been this last week have been persecuted

  241. for their faith. Their children have

  242. laughed at them. Their children have

  243. rejected them or their parents have

  244. given them a hard time. They've gotten

  245. eye rolls at work. Um there's people in

  246. this church that have lost their jobs

  247. because of their Christian faith. Um so

  248. it's not totally maybe you haven't. Um,

  249. but there's even in America where we

  250. have a freedom of religion, there's

  251. still other ways to be persecuted. Now,

  252. this is not we we wouldn't want to

  253. equate that persecution really with the

  254. persecution, listen to this, of Iranian

  255. Christians.

  256. Some of the people that have been

  257. recently murdered in Iran are are

  258. believers and they were um maybe

  259. resisting this regime that is there,

  260. maybe not. But we have reports that some

  261. of them were targeted out as getting rid

  262. of some Christians.

  263. Um, in fact, one of the young men who

  264. was executed this week had a cross

  265. tattooed on his neck. Now, in a Muslim

  266. country, you just don't do that.

  267. So, whether he was a Christian or not, I

  268. don't know. But I do know that that

  269. report was made.

  270. We're talking about real persecution

  271. here. We're talking about persecution

  272. for the name of Christ. We're talking

  273. about a cost from identifying with

  274. Christ. And here one of the first things

  275. that we can notice this is in this is

  276. that we are called not to be surprised

  277. by this. And notice the next part here

  278. suffering is not strange for the

  279. Christian life. And what is the opposite

  280. of strange? something that's strange

  281. would be normal or common. And so we

  282. could say that suffering actually for

  283. the name of Christ would be common.

  284. Notice this. This fits the whole letter.

  285. He's talking about exiles. You're not

  286. citizens of this world. You're citizens

  287. of heaven that are still making it

  288. through this world. In in chapter 1 6,

  289. we are grieved by various trials. So

  290. sometimes it is the cancer or the car

  291. wreck, but sometimes it is also the

  292. persecution for faith in Jesus or

  293. identification with Christ. Notice this

  294. that God is not absent.

  295. He is not absent in the suffering. He is

  296. confirming. He's building. He's refining

  297. your faith. That's what his work in this

  298. is doing. He is wise enough and he's

  299. good enough that he knows how to refine

  300. you and your faith in him. How to grow

  301. your faith in him. Now, what's also

  302. interesting here is Jesus had a lot to

  303. say about the fill it in about the

  304. reality that his followers would suffer.

  305. He had a lot to say about that. And I

  306. just want us to see just three passages

  307. though as you see down here at the very

  308. bottom that there's many other passages

  309. um in fact even more than I've listed

  310. here about this. But look at Matthew

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  311. chapter 16 and be ready to kind of help

  312. me with this a little bit. Look at

  313. Matthew chapter 16 in verse 24 and 25.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  314. Jesus says this. If anyone would come

  315. after me, let him what?

  316. >> Deny.

  317. >> Deny himself. Wow.

  318. not promote himself,

  319. not take care of himself, but let him

  320. deny himself. And then what does it say

  321. after that? And take up his cross and

  322. follow me. That's like saying, go get

  323. your electric chair and bring it with

  324. you.

  325. This is the place of ultimate rejection

  326. of self.

  327. Jesus is calling his disciples to follow

  328. him

  329. in the willingness to to forego our own

  330. experience for the honor of Christ. Look

  331. at Luke 14 and verse 27. And this is

  332. this is a longer verse here than this,

  333. but you can go back and look at 27-33.

  334. Jesus would eventually say this. Whoever

  335. does not bear his own cross and come

  336. after me, what does he say after that?

  337. >> Cannot be my disciple.

  338. Wow.

  339. Look at John 15. John 15 is one of my

  340. favorite chapters of the Bible

  341. in for a lot of reasons. But look at

  342. John 15. He says, "If the world hates

  343. you, know that it has hated me before it

  344. hated you.

  345. If you were of the world, the world

  346. would love you as its own. But because

  347. you are not of the world, but I chose

  348. you out of the world, therefore the

  349. world hates you."

  350. Remember the word that I said to you, "A

  351. servant is not greater than his master."

  352. Read it out loud. If they persecuted me,

  353. they will also persecute you. If they've

  354. kept my word, they will also keep yours.

  355. Now, both of those are helpful to us.

  356. That we we should not look I mean, and

  357. so Jesus Jesus is laying the groundwork

  358. here before Peter would ever write these

  359. words. decades before Jesus uh before

  360. Peter would write 1 Peter chapter 4, he

    1 Peter 4 chapter mention

  361. is remembering back to everything that

  362. Jesus said. And Jesus was saying they're

  363. going to come after you and they're

  364. going to come after you on account of me

  365. and you can rejoice and you can be glad

  366. about that because as you share in my

  367. sufferings and my rejection, you will

  368. share in my glory. This is an amazing

  369. identification that God calls us to. And

  370. so we should not be surprised. We just

  371. shouldn't be surprised when difficulties

  372. come. Okay? So notice this. The human

  373. assumption versus the biblical reality.

  374. Okay? I like I like comparisons. I like

  375. charts. They help me a little bit.

  376. Notice this. The human assumption is

  377. this. If you're suffering, then God is

  378. against you because he's all powerful.

  379. He can do what he want. He The mountains

  380. are his, the valleys are his. The stars

  381. are his handiwork, too. My God is so

  382. big, so strong, and so able. There's

  383. nothing my God cannot do. Then why am I

  384. suffering?

  385. Well, um, God must be against me. Well,

  386. no. We're going to see something

  387. different about that here in just a

  388. minute. You see, if you have ease, if

  389. life is really good, then you have God's

  390. favor.

  391. But if you have hardship, then you have

  392. God's punishment. That's the way humans

  393. think. That's our economy of scale.

  394. That's very often how we um seek to

  395. helicopter parent our own children.

  396. How about this? Biblical reality sets a

  397. different tone. Biblical reality shows

  398. us that suffering for righteousness in a

  399. fallen world means that God is actually

  400. with you.

  401. God is with you, not against you. Amen.

  402. >> Faithful suffering often means deeper

  403. favor with God.

  404. >> Deeper favor. So when when you suffer

  405. for the name of Christ, you can

  406. understand that God is God is saying,

  407. "Man, you are with me and I I have great

  408. things for you as you share in my

  409. sufferings." How about this? Here's the

  410. alternative. This is what God is

  411. actually doing. It's refinement. We can

  412. even say it's sunship. This means uh

  413. that you're related to him.

  414. This is this is yours. You're your you

  415. are his refinement, sunship and

  416. participation

  417. in Christ.

  418. And so some of you are sitting here

  419. thinking, "Ooh, I don't know why I came

  420. to this church. If this is what they

  421. teach, if I can get out of here before

  422. the suffering begins, that would be

  423. great.

  424. But let's just let's just see what God's

  425. word says. Now, we go on to verses 13

  426. and 14. And by the way, that's what

  427. expository preaching does. If you're new

  428. to this, you see the point that is of

  429. this number two, but it comes from

  430. verses 13 and 14. And so, we want to see

  431. where it comes from. But look at number

  432. two. Rejoice in suffering.

  433. It means you share in Christ.

  434. This is this is what we see right out of

  435. the verse. Look what it says in verse

  436. 13. But rejoice in so far as you share

  437. Christ's sufferings that you may also

  438. rejoice and be glad when his glory is

  439. revealed. If you are insulted for the

  440. name of Christ, underline it. You are

  441. what?

  442. >> Blessed. because the spirit of God,

  443. excuse me, the spirit of glory and of

  444. God rests upon you. So what we see

  445. clearly in these passages that suffering

  446. means participation,

  447. not punishment. So we're participating

  448. with Christ in what he has done. And the

  449. present reality is this is that the

  450. spirit rests on you. That's what we see

  451. in verse 14. Look what it says in verse

  452. 14. If you are insulted for the name of

  453. Christ, you are blessed because what?

  454. The spirit of glory and of God rests on

  455. you. Now, that is exactly the opposite

  456. thinking that Satan would love for you

  457. to think when your friends reject you

  458. because of Christ or when you are mocked

  459. because of Christ

  460. or when you you are you are concerned

  461. about the fact that something might go a

  462. little sideways if you don't go do what

  463. everybody else is doing or you don't if

  464. you don't give your approval of

  465. something. And so you're you're

  466. graciously lovingly not trying to be

  467. obnoxious, but you're just you're

  468. graciously withholding that from maybe

  469. um a family member or a friend that uh

  470. knows that you disagree and then they

  471. turn with venom and they attack you

  472. for that. And and you would be tempted

  473. to think this isn't going well. God must

  474. not be in this.

  475. But what these passages are showing us

  476. that this may be the very thing that God

  477. is going to use to reveal his glory to

  478. them.

  479. So the present re reality is is that

  480. Christ the spirit rests on you. The

  481. future promise is that there's greater

  482. joy at Christ's return.

  483. That as we said Jesus comes in the form

  484. of a baby. He comes in uh utter humility

  485. born into a cow stall. He grows up as a

  486. man rejected by everyone just except for

  487. a few disciples that are around him.

  488. Everyone is constantly harassing him,

  489. disagreeing with him. He comes to his

  490. own nation, his own people. They reject

  491. him. And then what we see is they reject

  492. him even unto Holy Week. And and when we

  493. come up on the crucifixion, Jesus enters

  494. Jerusalem

  495. with the crowds all around him. And he

  496. enters Jerusalem on a young donkey,

  497. a beast of burden that is weak.

  498. Jesus enters in not as a reigning king,

  499. but as a humble servant.

  500. And he knows that in just a few days

  501. time they're going to crucify me.

  502. And so he's going to experience them

  503. saying hosana. Hosana to the son of

  504. David. They think that he's going to be

  505. an earthly deliverer. They think that

  506. he's going to deliver them from Rome and

  507. all of their economic problems. But

  508. instead, he knows, "No, I'm not going

  509. for the Roman Empire. I'm going for your

  510. sinful heart.

  511. That's what I'm going to deliver you

  512. from. And you don't even want that.

  513. >> But that's the true meaning of what

  514. we're about to celebrate at Passion

  515. Week.

  516. This beautiful picture of God's deeper

  517. joy that is going to eventually come

  518. back as the reigning king. The scripture

  519. says that he will come again as a

  520. reigning king. Notice this. Suffering is

  521. actually a gift of grace. Suffering is

  522. actually a gift of grace. Some of you

  523. say, "Well, I can I can I avoid that

  524. gift. Please, please don't give me that

  525. gift."

  526. No. Listen, you believe me, you want it.

  527. If you if you know the Lord, if you love

  528. the Lord, this is not something for you

  529. to be to be avoiding.

  530. This is something for you to see the

  531. reality of it and embrace it. Look at

  532. Philippians 1:29. For it has been

    Philippians 1:29

  533. granted. You see, that's like a

  534. privilege.

  535. When you ask for a grant, you're asking

  536. for something good, right? For it has

  537. been granted to you that for the sake of

  538. Christ, you should not only believe in

  539. him. Okay, we like that. I believe in

  540. Jesus. I like that. And then the

  541. sentence ends with but also what?

  542. >> Suffer for his sake. This is for his

  543. name, for his reputation, for his glory.

  544. And so there's a lot of times when we

  545. just want all the benefits and none of

  546. the costs.

  547. How about this next one? Not only is it

  548. a gift of grace, but it's also suffering

  549. is actually a path to glory.

  550. And in Romans 8:17, we see that we are

    Romans 8:17

  551. hes of God and fellowairs with Christ,

  552. provided

  553. we suffer with him in order that we may

  554. also be what?

  555. >> glorified with him. So here's a

  556. different book of the Bible, a different

  557. author, and he's saying the same thing.

  558. By the way, the Bible fits together like

  559. lock and key,

  560. and you you can trust all of scripture.

  561. It fits together perfectly. But notice

  562. it's the same thing. Provided we suffer

  563. with him in order that we may also be

  564. what? Glorified with him.

  565. >> Look at the last bullet point there.

  566. Suffering in persecution is actually

  567. blessing,

  568. not rejection by God. And we see this in

  569. the sermon on the mount. This is Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  570. chapter 5. Jesus is preaching in the

  571. sermon on the mount. And look what he

  572. says. Blessed are you when others, what

  573. does it say there?

  574. >> revile you and persecute you and utter

  575. all kinds of evil against you falsely on

  576. my account. Verse 12, underline it.

  577. Rejoice and be glad for your reward in

  578. heaven. For your reward is great in

  579. heaven. For so they persecuted the

  580. prophets who were before you. Now, that

  581. last phrase, for so they persecuted the

  582. prophets before you, he's saying it's

  583. always been this way. In a fallen world

  584. for thousands of years, before I ever

  585. came as the Messiah, all of those that I

  586. sent that God is speaking, all of those

  587. that I sent to preach to you, to declare

  588. to you the ways of God, you rejected.

  589. You you you either ignored them, you

  590. stoned them. Only a few of the prophets

  591. were ever listened to. But God was

  592. constantly and patiently bringing to

  593. them a warning. Bringing to them a

  594. warning to turn from your wicked ways

  595. and turn to God. Look to God. And of

  596. course, our human hearts don't want to

  597. do that. And God's found way after way

  598. after way through prophet after prophet

  599. after prophet. And every single time we

  600. see ultimately a rejection of their

  601. message until Jesus, the final prophet

  602. would come and fulfill the Lord's plan

  603. for our redemption. So this is not about

  604. a rejection. This is about blessing.

  605. This is entering into. So when you are

  606. when you are persecuted as a Christian,

  607. you can say, "Wow, I'm kind of in league

  608. with Elijah.

  609. I'm in league with Jeremiah.

  610. I am in league with the others who have

  611. also been rejected. I'm in league with

  612. the disciples.

  613. I am in league with Peter who was

  614. crucified, who wrote this at the end of

  615. his life." Notice this. Number three,

  616. make sure your suffering is for

  617. righteousness,

  618. not sin. Now, I want to remind you that

  619. First Peter, all through First Peter,

  620. though it's a a great letter of

  621. encouragement, listen to this. It's also

  622. a reminder. Hey, if you really are a

  623. Christian,

  624. act like it. If you're really a

  625. Christian, live like it. You can't just

  626. run through the traffic of South Florida

  627. flipping everybody off.

  628. You can't just go sleep with whoever you

  629. want to sleep with. You can't just go

  630. click on whatever you want to click on

  631. and just vent your beastly lust wherever

  632. you want to. You can't just say

  633. whatever's on your mind. You're to be a

  634. person who is reigning in the flesh

  635. through the power of Jesus Christ,

  636. through the power of the Holy Spirit.

  637. You're living differently than a fallen

  638. and broken world because you've been

  639. saved to live differently. Peter is

  640. reminding the people who are reading his

  641. letter, act like a a Christian.

  642. Don't talk like everybody else. Don't

  643. don't look like everybody else. Don't

  644. think like everybody else in

  645. ungodliness.

  646. So now part of what he's saying here is

  647. if you're going to suffer, make sure

  648. it's not because of stupid sin.

  649. Make sure it's because of Christ because

  650. that's what'll be rewarded.

  651. Look at this in verse 15. Look what it

  652. says. But let none of you suffer as a

  653. murderer or a thief. And then these last

  654. two are interesting. Or as an evildoer.

  655. Doesn't that kind of wrap up everybody

  656. else as an evildoer?

  657. This is a crook. This is a gossip. Um

  658. when we look at meddler,

  659. somebody who meddled yet, you know, have

  660. you ever

  661. we talk about this in starting point, we

  662. talk about the fact that our church is

  663. committed to unity.

  664. Our church is committed to Yes. Because

  665. we go back to a very interesting passage

  666. that says, "Consider how to stir one

  667. another up

  668. to love and good deeds." Now, that

  669. phrase stir one another up is usually

  670. stirring one another up to what?

  671. Anger and hostility. And we talk about

  672. this very often um in starting point.

  673. Um, some of you have people that you

  674. work with. Some of you have family

  675. members who like to stir stuff.

  676. Some of you have somebody in your family

  677. that doesn't mind stirring something

  678. and they bring about conflict with

  679. others

  680. and they show up stirring and you're

  681. like, "Oh, I know what that comment

  682. meant."

  683. I will tell you this. I have a brother

  684. and a sister. We love my mom and dad.

  685. All three of us are kind of engaged and

  686. taking care of mom and dad at one degree

  687. or another right now. Kelly is in town.

  688. And and even this week, something

  689. happened that I went, "Ooh, that that

  690. didn't quite go right." Okay, whatever.

  691. And I thought the c the thought went

  692. across my mind. I could say that. Oh,

  693. but you know, the next thought was that

  694. would cause Kelly to think ill of Mark.

  695. I probably shouldn't say that. And then

  696. my evil heart, you know what it said?

  697. But I could.

  698. How wicked is that?

  699. How wicked would it be if I recognized

  700. that I could say something that would

  701. cause my sister to think uh just that

  702. that there would be a little a

  703. little

  704. dingum. I could I could ding him.

  705. I want us to see that that's evil.

  706. That's evil. So, a medddler is somebody

  707. that

  708. provokes

  709. dissension, provokes. And that could be

  710. with a co-orker. That could be with a

  711. neighbor. I mean, you could be standing

  712. there and go, "Yeah, CAN YOU BELIEVE

  713. THAT GUY? ARE YOU GOING TO LET HIM DO

  714. THAT TO YOU? I mean, look what he did to

  715. your fence. I mean, look at, you know,

  716. and and you could stir somebody up.

  717. So, what we see in this passage,

  718. he's saying, if you're going to suffer,

  719. don't let it be, okay, murderer is

  720. obvious. You're not supposed to do that.

  721. Thief, okay, that's obvious. You

  722. shouldn't steal. But an evildoer, that

  723. could be anything. That could be

  724. anything sexual. That could be anything

  725. uh business-wise. That could be an

  726. evildoer is somebody who's just doing

  727. that which is wrong. Or even down to

  728. this medddler thing. This this person

  729. who's not a peacemaker.

  730. What kind of person are you? Maybe

  731. you're the medddler.

  732. Are you the medddler?

  733. He's saying if you're going to suffer,

  734. make sure it's not because of those

  735. things. Look at verse 16. Yet if anyone

  736. suffers as a Christian, let him not be

  737. ashamed, but let him glorify God in that

  738. name. So what we recognize here is not

  739. all suffering is equal. There's a

  740. distinction. There's suffering because

  741. of sin

  742. and there is suffering for Christ. Now,

  743. if we're suffering because of sin, quite

  744. honestly, it's deserved and it is

  745. shameful.

  746. But if we're suffering for Christ, it is

  747. honorable.

  748. It's the opposite of shameful. It's

  749. honorable that you're honoring the Lord.

  750. So our response, what these verses are

  751. saying to us is is that our response

  752. should it's not about reason for shame,

  753. but instead it's reason to glorify God.

  754. that he is doing a work through your

  755. standing with him.

  756. Look at 1 Peter 3:17. We studied this a

    1 Peter 3:17

  757. few weeks ago, um, several weeks ago,

  758. actually a couple of months ago, and

  759. because we've been working through First

  760. Peter and back in chapter 3:1 17, read

  761. it out loud together with me. For it is

  762. better to suffer for doing good than for

  763. doing evil. He's already said it once,

  764. so now he's saying it again in this

  765. context. He's reminding them,

  766. don't live ungodly lives in Hollywood,

  767. in Broward, in Dade. He's saying, don't

  768. live ungodly lives. As Christians, live

  769. godly lives. Look at Acts 5:40. And this

    Acts 5:40

  770. is really interesting, and you can see

  771. it on the screen in front of you. Right

  772. below the fi chapter 5:40 I put when

  773. Peter and the apostles were hauled

  774. before the council. This is very early

  775. in the explosion of the church and the

  776. growth of the church. The council the

  777. Jewish council galial and the others

  778. called them in called Peter in and the

  779. apostles in and they said you you are

  780. doing the wrong thing. You're stirring

  781. up the people. We've told you not to

  782. preach in his name. They they had a

  783. whole council there and then they send

  784. them out so they can counsel and

  785. deliberate among themselves. And after

  786. they deliberate among themselves as the

  787. council, then they bring the apostles

  788. back in. So look at this is where it

  789. picks up in verse 40. And when they had

  790. called in the apostles, what does it

  791. say?

  792. >> They beat them

  793. and charged them not to speak in the

  794. name of Jesus. and let them go. Verse

  795. 41. Then they left the presence of the

  796. council. Read it out loud. Rejoicing

  797. that they were counted worthy to suffer

  798. dishonor for the name. Isn't that cool?

  799. They They're beaten and released and

  800. they go away with a very different

  801. attitude that many. You see, they didn't

  802. go away shocked GOING, "CAN YOU BELIEVE

  803. THEY DID THAT TO US? WHERE IS JESUS?

  804. WHERE I mean I mean Jesus said, "Call

  805. upon me when you need me." Where was he?

  806. The rods were heart painful.

  807. And and here they go. Oh, no, no, no. We

  808. get it. We totally get it. These people

  809. right now are rejecting the Lord Jesus.

  810. We have had an opportunity to proclaim

  811. the Lord Jesus. Their flesh hates him.

  812. Their flesh hates this message. But one

  813. day, one day some of them may believe.

  814. And here's here's the very interesting

  815. thing. What we see in the scripture and

  816. especially listen to this. Christian

  817. history tells us that many many people

  818. on that council wound up becoming

  819. followers of Jesus.

  820. And part of what preached the gospel to

  821. them was that there was Peter and these

  822. other apostles that endured persecution,

  823. endured hardship, and they would have

  824. come away going, why would they go

  825. through all of this?

  826. Why why would they stand in this? This

  827. guy is gone. Jesus is in their mind

  828. dead.

  829. Why would they continue to follow him?

  830. and they they continue steadfastly

  831. following him, saying, "You can do

  832. whatever you want to me, but I'm still

  833. going to preach in the name of Jesus."

  834. Well, that begs the question, why? And

  835. as they do, God uses that. Look what it

  836. says in verse 42. And every day,

  837. underline it, in the temple. So, they

  838. kept going back to the temple when the

  839. council told them not to. And every day

  840. in the temple and from house to house,

  841. look what it says. They did not cease

  842. teaching and pro and preaching that the

  843. Christ is Jesus. The Christ means the

  844. Messiah, the anointed one is Jesus. They

  845. they just kept right on saying, "Hey,

  846. the Messiah that we've been waiting for,

  847. it's Jesus." Not just that it was Jesus,

  848. it is Jesus cuz he's not dead.

  849. This is beautiful. This is getting us

  850. ready for Passion Week. This is getting

  851. getting us ready for Easter. Look at 1

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  852. Peter chapter 2 and verse 20. If when

  853. you do good and suffer for it you

  854. endure, this is a gracious thing in the

  855. sight of God.

  856. God sees it when you stand with him. You

  857. see, fill it in. God is pleased with

  858. righteous suffering. That's what it is.

  859. He's pleased with righteous suffering.

  860. Okay, last page number four. Let's see

  861. something else from verses 17 and verses

  862. 18. Look at number four. Understand

  863. suffering as God's refining judgment of

  864. his people. So why does he do it? Why

  865. does he allow it? It's because God is

  866. refining.

  867. It's he's refining. He's not saving us

  868. from judgment. He's saving us through

  869. judgment. We talked about that. Noah and

  870. the ark. the the the the ark went

  871. through the flood, but God I is refining

  872. us through the hardship. He's refining

  873. us through the hardship. Look at verse

  874. 17. For it is time for judgment to begin

  875. at the household of God. And if it

  876. brings with us, what will be the outcome

  877. for those who do not obey the gospel?

  878. Verse 18, he says, "And if the righteous

  879. is scarcely saved," and this is quoted

  880. from Proverbs chap 11, "What will become

  881. of the ungodly and the sinner?" So Peter

  882. is is hearkening back to the Old

  883. Testament and he's saying God is at

  884. work. You see, judgment here means

  885. purifying, not condemning.

  886. Judgment is purifying. You want the

  887. righteous judgments of God. He's at

  888. work. You want the righteous judgments

  889. of God so long as the blood of Christ is

  890. in the equation. Um because God is at

  891. work. Notice this. God refineses his own

  892. first. Judgment begins in the household

  893. of God. God's people are called to be

  894. holy.

  895. We see that in Ezekiel 9, Malachi 3. You

  896. ought to go look that up this afternoon.

  897. Right out there to the side. Homework.

  898. You ought to go look those up and study

  899. those. There's other places in Amos as

  900. well on that. But here's the argument.

  901. If believers are refined through

  902. suffering, how much more serious for the

  903. unbelieving?

  904. So if they don't have the blood of

  905. Christ covering them, they are going to

  906. experience the judgment of God with no

  907. grace and no help.

  908. Now verse 18 is interesting. Look what

  909. it says. If the righteous is scarcely

  910. saved,

  911. what will become of the ungodly and the

  912. sinner? You say, "Does that mean we're

  913. saved by the skin of our teeth?" The

  914. righteous, those who have been declared

  915. righteous in Christ. Does that mean that

  916. we're just barely saved? Not at all.

  917. Look at verse 18 in the in your notes

  918. here. Scarcely saved or the Greek word

  919. of that m is this. It means with great

  920. difficulty. If we are saved with great

  921. difficulty, this means a very high price

  922. and not only a high price but a deep

  923. process

  924. with great difficulty. A high price was

  925. paid through a deep process. And the

  926. idea is this. The righteous are saved

  927. through the great work of the Godhead or

  928. the Trinity. And this is if you're new

  929. to studying the Bible at all, notice how

  930. this works. There's God the Father, God

  931. the Son, and God the Spirit. This is the

  932. Trinity. One God in three persons. It's

  933. not three gods. It's one God in three

  934. persons. Don't try to figure it out.

  935. You'll blow a fuse. Just accept it.

  936. Okay? One God in three persons. But God

  937. the Father orchestrates the plan, sends

  938. the Son, and calls out his chosen one.

  939. That's God's role in this. God the Son

  940. becomes a man in perfect obedience. He

  941. suffers. He lays down his perfect life

  942. dying in our place. And then notice

  943. this, God the Spirit. He convicts and

  944. empowers us to what?

  945. >> To believe and seals us in God's

  946. salvation. So, Father, Son, and Spirit

  947. are all at work in saving us. And that's

  948. part of what verse 18 is talking about.

  949. If the righteous are saved with much

  950. difficulty, what will become of the

  951. ungodly and the sinner? The picture is

  952. this is that they are utterly lost

  953. without salvation. And that is a very

  954. very precarious place to be in a great

  955. place of judgment without grace.

  956. Hebrews 12:es 6-7 says this, "For the

  957. Lord disciplines those he loves."

  958. So when he's disciplin disciplining us,

  959. when he's saving us through the troubles

  960. in and chastising us, he is loving us.

  961. Malachi 2 or Malachi 3:es 2 and 3, who

  962. can stand when he appears? For he will

  963. be like a what does it say there? a

  964. refiner's fire. What is the refiner's

  965. fire? It's the person who is working

  966. with gold or silver or other precious

  967. metals. And what does he do? The

  968. refiner's fire heats up. Heats up

  969. greatly. They would use bellows to

  970. provide lots of oxygen. And the fire

  971. would get hotter and hotter and hotter

  972. until the gold would melt. And not only

  973. would the gold melt, but when the gold

  974. would melt, the gold has a higher

  975. specific gravity. If you remember back

  976. to your chemistry and physical science

  977. days, and the gold sinks to the bottom

  978. and the lighter alloys or the lighter me

  979. metals and impurities rise to the top.

  980. And so that only happens under great and

  981. sustained heat. And when there's great

  982. and sustained heat, the true gold

  983. settles down to the bottom. The

  984. impurities rise to the top and the

  985. refiner pours those impurities off so

  986. that what is left is a more pure gold.

  987. Now, that is what God is doing even in

  988. our suffering. That is what God is

  989. doing. He is he's working out of us

  990. the things that we are likely to hold on

  991. to instead of him. He's working out of

  992. us the affections of our heart that are

  993. not of him.

  994. The refiner's fire is not a thing to

  995. dread and to hate but to embrace because

  996. there is a great glory that comes from

  997. that.

  998. Finally, notice verse 19. Number five,

  999. notice this. What do we do with all of

1000. this? This is where we end today. We you

1001. entrust yourself to God and keep doing

1002. good. That's what Peter says to do.

1003. Entrust yourself to God in the suffering

1004. and keep doing good. Look at verse 19.

1005. I'd like to ask everyone to read verse

1006. 19 out loud with me. Let's read it

1007. together. Therefore, let those who

1008. suffer according to God's will entrust

1009. their souls to a faithful creator while

1010. doing good. Do you see that? We are to

1011. entrust yourself to God and keep doing

1012. good. That's where the verse ends. While

1013. doing good. You see, one of the things

1014. that we can see this in this verse is

1015. suffering is according to the will of

  1016. God.

1017. Now, there's some people who their

1018. theology is so weak and their

1019. understanding of God's grand purposes is

1020. so benign and weak that they cannot

1021. imagine that God would want any of his

  1022. children to suffer.

  1023. And you'd say, "Well, I I just I don't

1024. know if I could love God if I knew that

1025. God would see me suffer and not do

1026. anything about it." My friends, listen.

1027. No. God loves you enough to allow you

  1028. sometimes to suffer.

1029. >> He loves you enough to do that. And I

1030. realize that that may be an a crisis of

1031. faith for you for a little while. I just

1032. pray that you'll come on through that

1033. crisis and see all the rest of scripture

1034. that says and shows that he is good and

1035. his intentions toward you are good. And

1036. this is part of what faith is. You're

  1037. learning to trust him.

1038. You're learning to trust him with the

1039. pain. You're learning to trust him with

  1040. the thing you don't want. You're

1041. learning to trust him with the injury

1042. that he is at work and you you you come

1043. to him in faith. This is without faith

1044. it's impossible to please him but with

1045. faith all things are possible. This is

1046. amazing. God calls you to trust him. See

1047. two responses that we are called to

1048. trust God because he is a faithful

1049. creator and keep obeying. The idea is

1050. this. While doing good, you keep doing

1051. the right thing. And all of this ties

1052. back to first Peter chapter 2. We

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

1053. already studied that a few months ago.

1054. He continu Jesus here. It's speaking of

1055. Jesus. He continued entrusting himself

1056. to him. That's the father who judges

  1057. justly.

1058. So Jesus himself did this. He entrusted

1059. himself to God in 1 Peter chapter 3

    1 Peter 3:17

1060. verse 17. And the whole picture is in

  1061. suffering for doing good.

1062. So I know some of you are thinking, I

1063. can't wait to get out of here. I don't

1064. want to be a Christian like that. These

1065. people talk about suffering. These

1066. people talk about embracing it. These

1067. people talk about not avoid. Now I'm not

1068. saying you go out there and be odd for

1069. God. So people who will mistreat you.

1070. Don't be your own martyr.

1071. If we're going to be someone's martyr,

  1072. let's be Christ's martyr.

1073. And that means be loving. Be caring. Be

1074. clear. No doubt about it. Don't don't go

1075. out there and try to generate some type

1076. of persecution so you can feel better

1077. about your own faith. That that's not

1078. the picture here. When you are honestly

1079. living for Christ in righteousness

1080. and suffering comes, you you just accept

1081. that as God is at work and you pray for

1082. those. This is why Jesus would say,

1083. "Pray for those who persecute you." Now,

1084. I want you to think about the apostles

1085. in that council. That council of all

1086. those Jewish leaders were sitting there

1087. condemning them. Said, "Do not do not

1088. preach in Jesus' name." And then they

1089. beat them to say we really mean it and

1090. next time we may kill you like we did

1091. Jesus. And then they sent him out and

1092. they went out rejoicing in his name. Now

1093. Jesus told those same apostles, "Pray

1094. for those who persecute you." I want you

1095. to imagine with me that they probably

1096. did that. They probably went back to the

1097. homes and to the places where they were

1098. with the believers that they were with

1099. and they prayed for those who persecuted

1100. them. And then what do we see a few

1101. months later over the next couple of

1102. years? We see a bunch of those council

  1103. members become Christians.

1104. This is amazing. God is at work.

1105. God is saving through the suffering.

1106. Look at Psalm 31 and verse 5.

  1107. In fact, Jesus

  1108. while on the cross,

1109. his last words in Luke 23 and verse 46,

1110. look what it says. Into your hands I

  1111. commit my spirit.

  1112. That's what Jesus quoted

1113. from the word of God when he was giving

1114. up his life for us.

1115. Into your hands I commit my spirit. Can

1116. you say that to God?

1117. Lord, into your hands I commit my

1118. spirit. You say, "Well, I'm not dying

1119. yet." No. It's a good thing to do that

1120. now while you're alive and to continue

1121. to do that. into your hands, Lord, I

1122. commit my life. And maybe if you do that

1123. a lot now, while you're alive, when

1124. you're on your deathbed over there on

1125. Memorial or over there on 39th Street or

1126. wherever it is that when you're there,

1127. then you can say with joy, "Into your

1128. hands, Lord, I commit my spirit."

1129. >> You see, when we live in faith, we can

1130. die in faith. And what we can do in that

1131. is experience the great glory that is to

1132. come. And so this is a beautiful picture

1133. of what God is doing in this passage. So

1134. this is a great passage that reminds us

  1135. of not a candy-coated Christianity but a

1136. very real glory that God himself has

1137. sanctioned for us. Look at the

1138. reflections and the meditation and the

  1139. application of this.

1140. Number one, when you think about the

1141. idea of suffering for Christ, what are

1142. your thoughts and what are your

1143. emotions? That would be a good thing for

1144. you to think about this week.

1145. There is a line there

1146. that's left for you to think about these

  1147. things.

1148. I want to encourage you to go home as a

1149. husband and as a wife or to go home as

1150. an individual or go home as a family and

1151. talk about this and to think about this.

1152. When you think about the idea of

1153. suffering for Christ, what are your

  1154. thoughts

1155. and how do you feel?

1156. Number two, in light of this passage,

1157. how should you pray about your

1158. willingness to identify with Christ

  1159. even in his sufferings?

1160. How should you pray about that? I want

1161. to encourage you to go think about that.

1162. Ask the Lord, Lord, how should I pray

  1163. about this?

  1164. And number three,

1165. what can you begin, circle it, doing

1166. now? What can you begin doing now to

1167. grow in your maturity of faith

  1168. and honoring Christ?

1169. I believe that God wants us to put this

  1170. sermon into action. Amen.

  1171. >> Let's stand together for prayer.

1172. Look at the title in front of you. Share

  1173. in Christ's sufferings.

  1174. Let's pray.

  1175. Father, I thank you

1176. that you know exactly what we need to

1177. hear. Last Sunday, you knew that we

1178. needed to hear about anxiety.

1179. Maybe anxiety before we hear about

  1180. suffering.

1181. Because so often we allow suffering to

  1182. produce anxiety.

1183. Lord, I pray that we would be the kind

  1184. of people that

1185. love your word, dive into your word,

1186. listen to your word, and then live your

  1187. word.

1188. So Lord, help us with this. I pray I

1189. pray God that for those who have never

1190. yet come to faith in Jesus Christ. Lord,

1191. I pray that maybe this morning,

  1192. seemingly most unlikely,

1193. that a sermon on suffering would be the

1194. one where they came to understand

1195. that Jesus died for their sins.

1196. He suffered on their behalf so that they

  1197. might become

1198. the righteousness of God. Lord, I pray

1199. for those who need to follow you in

1200. belief in repentance. I pray for those

1201. who need to follow you in baptism.

1202. Lord, some have said, "I've never been

  1203. baptized scripturally.

1204. I I have not identified with Christ

  1205. and I haven't even been persecuted."

  1206. Or maybe I haven't identified with

1207. baptism because I'm afraid of being

  1208. persecuted

1209. by my family, by my friends. Lord, I

1210. pray that today there would be a joy and

1211. say, "Now I see. I have nothing to

  1212. fear."

1213. Lord, I pray for whatever the decisions

1214. are that we need to make in our lives

1215. that we would do that to follow hard

1216. after you even when the way is long

1217. and when the suffering is deep. Lord, I

1218. thank you that you went to the cross for

1219. us. May we go to life for you in Jesus

  1220. name I pray. Amen.
