  1. For many who come to our church for the

  2. first time, they're not used to the

  3. Bible being studied quite like we study

  4. it. And I want to say to you that we

  5. usually study

  6. uh

  7. book by book, verse by verse, so that we

  8. might really hear from God. And so this

  9. morning, that's what we're going to

  10. about to do. We're going to take a look

  11. at a couple of verses of scripture, and

  12. we're going to dive down deep into that.

  13. And this morning, I think it's very

  14. interesting how this passage of

  15. scripture that we're looking at this

  16. morning lines up with where we are in

  17. the calendar.

  18. When I think about this weekend, and I

  19. think about um Memorial Day, and I think

  20. about those who gave their lives for our

  21. country,

  22. they did not just merely give their

  23. lives.

  24. They entered into

  25. terror.

  26. They entered into something called war.

  27. And whether it was because of a roadside

  28. bomb,

  29. as we have often seen in Iraq and

  30. Afghanistan, or whether it was the

  31. the

  32. um

  33. the countryside of Europe, or whether it

  34. was

  35. the seas of the Pacific, there was a

  36. very, very real and terrific war.

  37. And in this world, we have war.

  38. In this world, we have physical war

  39. between geopolitical nations,

  40. one people fighting another people. I

  41. will never forget being on the island of

  42. Malta one time. I was stuck there

  43. waiting um for a group of people to

  44. come. Um

  45. They had been held up because of visas,

  46. and uh we were going to make a film

  47. uh that would help Muslims come to

  48. Christ. And so it was going to be filmed

  49. on Malta. I was the leader of the

  50. project, to some degree the producer of

  51. it. And um so the actors were coming in,

  52. the film crew from Australia was coming

  53. in, and there on the island of Malta I

  54. had a few days by myself, and I remember

  55. it was empty, it was wintertime, nobody

  56. goes to Malta in the wintertime, it's a

  57. summer spot, and um it was it was cold

  58. and rainy, and there was nobody around,

  59. and I went by the tourism office several

  60. times just cuz I was bored. And they had

  61. a little film and the gal said, "Hey,

  62. would you like to see our film on

  63. Malta?" I went in and I sat down, and

  64. you know, Malta is out in the

  65. Mediterranean.

  66. And it was the history of Malta where

  67. one civilization after another

  68. civilization

  69. came and overtook that rock because it

  70. was strategic. It was a place of

  71. resupply, it was a place to hold, it was

  72. a place where they could regroup before

  73. they went out into the And one kingdom

  74. after another So Malta went from

  75. civilization to civilization perhaps

  76. more than just about any other place on

  77. Earth.

  78. And I remember as I sat there and

  79. watched it, I thought, "What a horrible

  80. story."

  81. That one civilization comes along and

  82. says, "Hey, what you have I want.

  83. I'm going to take it, and I'm going to

  84. take it by force.

  85. I will take your country. I will take

  86. your island. I will take your kingdom,

  87. and I will raise armies to do it." Just

  88. so horrible.

  89. The death and the destruction of that

  90. war is a terrible thing.

  91. Um we remember that at Memorial Day, but

  92. when we come to the passage that we're

  93. going to see this morning,

  94. it it kind of lines up perfectly because

  95. it shows us where war really comes from.

  96. It shows us

  97. this tremendous battle that is going on

  98. around our lives all the time. It's a

  99. battle that's being waged right here

  100. in the territory of the United States.

  101. It's a battle that's being waged even in

  102. Hollywood.

  103. It's a battle that's being waged even in

  104. this room.

  105. In our minds and in our hearts. So this

  106. morning as we come to 1 Peter,

  107. the title of the message is your

  108. adversary the devil and this is part one

  109. as we look at this. But let's let's

  110. remember the context. Not all of us have

  111. perfect memory. Not all of us have been

  112. here. Some of you are here for the very

  113. first time. So our church often enjoys

  114. doing a little bit of review. Let's

  115. remember this. First of all,

  116. get your pen and get ready to hear. The

  117. Apostle Peter writes to churches

  118. scattered across the Mediterranean world

  119. like where Malta is.

  120. And they are being all of these

  121. Christians are being persecuted.

  122. Churches that are being persecuted in

  123. the Roman Empire. They're being

  124. persecuted by Romans and they're being

  125. persecuted by unbelieving Jews who are

  126. offended

  127. concerning this claim of the Messiah.

  128. They're being persecuted for their faith

  129. in Jesus. So this letter is to people

  130. who are being persecuted. Number two,

  131. Peter calls Christians to fill it in,

  132. hopeful perseverance in their suffering.

  133. He's not saying your suffering is going

  134. to go away, but he is saying that God

  135. will help you to persevere

  136. for the sake of the gospel and for his

  137. glory through the suffering. Number

  138. three, Peter calls Christians to holy

  139. living in their daily lives.

  140. Christians, just like at that time, just

  141. like at this time, are tempted to live

  142. unholy lives. We could live lives that

  143. are not honoring to God. And he is

  144. calling Christians to remember to honor

  145. the Lord, not live like the pagans

  146. around them. Number three, Peter is

  147. constantly calling them to remember

  148. Christ and his redemptive sacrifice.

  149. Because Jesus is the center of it all.

  150. And so he's calling them to remember

  151. that. So, when we come to 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5:8

  152. chapter 5 verses 8 and 9,

  153. we are really wrapping up. He's wrapping

  154. up with some final exhortations. We saw

  155. one of those last time we studied this,

  156. and what he was calling them to was

  157. humble yourselves.

  158. And you know, that's that's what we all

  159. need to be reminded of all the time.

  160. Marcy says, "Amen, Andrew. You need to

  161. be reminded of that all the time."

  162. Humble yourselves before God

  163. and before others.

  164. And we're going to see this morning why

  165. that is so important, and it is very

  166. interesting to me

  167. that as Peter is wrapping this up,

  168. he mentions two things together.

  169. Look at this.

  170. He says, "Humble yourselves therefore

  171. under the mighty hand of God, so that at

  172. the proper time he may exalt you,

  173. casting all of your anxieties upon him

  174. because he cares for you." That's the

  175. first thing he's reminding them. Humble

  176. yourselves, and then look at the next

  177. one.

  178. He says, "Be vigilant." Because of what?

  179. The devil is real, and he is terrible.

  180. Now, the reason I think it's so

  181. interesting that those are together is

  182. because they are opposites.

  183. When you think about humility and the

  184. humility of God, the opposite of that is

  185. the pride

  186. and the arrogance and the evil of Satan.

  187. I mean, pride is at the root of all of

  188. this. Pride is at the root of our sin.

  189. Pride and idolatry go hand in hand

  190. against God, and that's what Satan

  191. represents. In fact, notice this, our

  192. text this morning is this one, 1 Peter

    1 Peter 5:8

  193. chapter 5 verses 8 and 9. He says, right

  194. after he says, "Be humble and cast your

  195. cares upon the Lord." Look what he says

  196. in verse 8. "Be sober-minded.

  197. Be watchful." We're going to look at

  198. that next week. Be sober-minded. Be

  199. watchful. This week we're looking at

  200. what's underlined. "Your adversary, the

  201. devil, prowls around like what?" A

  202. roaring lion. A roaring lion.

  203. "Seeking someone to devour."

  204. And then in verse 9 he goes on and he

  205. says, "Resist him,

  206. firm in your faith, knowing that the

  207. same kinds of suffering are being

  208. experienced

  209. by your brothers throughout the world."

  210. So he starts off with be humble and then

  211. he comes to

  212. be aware of the devil.

  213. Be very aware of the devil because he

  214. wants to kill you. Amen. He wants to

  215. destroy

  216. your

  217. life.

  218. So there's a very war There's a very

  219. real war going on.

  220. And as I think about Memorial Day and I

  221. think about how this day is is set aside

  222. for that, I'm thinking about the

  223. spiritual war

  224. that all of us are in, and there are

  225. casualties to it.

  226. And this text is so powerful. Now,

  227. if you've been around here at all, you

  228. know

  229. I really enjoy aviation. I've always

  230. enjoyed aviation.

  231. I I do and I I as a kid growing up, my

  232. dad would take us to watch the airplanes

  233. land at Fort Lauderdale. Has anybody

  234. gone and watch airplanes land before?

  235. Okay, that's kind of a cool thing,

  236. right? Big ones, little ones and

  237. everything else. We would go to air

  238. shows. Anybody been to an air show? We

  239. just had one recently.

  240. Um you know, all these things that you

  241. know, aviation's [clears throat] kind of

  242. a cool thing and I I would because I was

  243. close to my grandfathers

  244. that were born during World War I, I

  245. would often hear all the stories from

  246. the different ages and so this morning I

  247. I just kind of want to walk through a

  248. few things here. World War I aircraft.

  249. It is just kind of amazing thing. Key

  250. instruments in the in the issue of war

  251. in the power of war. Notice some of

  252. these. I mean, here's an actual one from

  253. World War I, a picture taken and we see

  254. all of those and it wouldn't be complete

  255. if we didn't mention in World War I

  256. this one. Does anybody know what that

  257. guy is?

  258. The Red Baron. Some of you are going,

  259. "What in the world is the Red Baron?

  260. That's pizza." No.

  261. The Red Baron was a very real air

  262. fighter, a triplane aircraft

  263. by

  264. a German man

  265. who listen to this, shot down 80

  266. aircraft.

  267. He wouldn't you know, an ace is he's got

  268. five kills. This guy had 80 kills.

  269. And he was shot down and killed when he

  270. was 25 years old.

  271. And so a young man who was a war hero

  272. and but look at how things changed. We

  273. go from

  274. a little airplane that had 110

  275. horsepower

  276. to a P-51 Mustang

  277. or two

  278. um the great British airplane the

  279. Spitfire that

  280. fought the Battle of Britain saving

  281. Britain or um

  282. the Corsair F U

  283. um four. This is an F U four um that was

  284. so instrumental in the Pacific or we get

  285. to the German aircraft. Um some of you

  286. say why in the world are we talking

  287. about this? Well, I want you to see how

  288. things progress in the art of war.

  289. We come to the next generation of

  290. fighter planes. This is a Soviet jet.

  291. And uh some of these were supersonic.

  292. That was supersonic. The great airplane

  293. of Vietnam and the Korean War the uh F-4

  294. Phantom jet most powerful jet. Listen to

  295. this. That jet has 50,000

  296. horsepower.

  297. Do you remember how much horsepower I

  298. said the Red Baron had?

  299. 110.

  300. Just think about that. 110 horsepower up

  301. to 150 depending on what year to

  302. 50,000 horsepower to the great F-14

  303. Tomcat. And you look at that boat that

  304. tremendous airplane so versatile for the

  305. Navy um the iconic uh Top Gun airplane

  306. to the F-15 Fighting Eagle that was

  307. similar to the F-14 but even a little

  308. more agile to the F-16 Fighting Falcon

  309. to the F/A-18 Super Hornet. All of these

  310. amazing. Now then we come to

  311. a next generation.

  312. And what's very interesting this is the

  313. reason I'm sharing this.

  314. What is that? Some of you say a UFO.

  315. That must be a UFO.

  316. No, that would be an airplane.

  317. That's a B-1 bomber. It's not a fighter

  318. plane but it is a bomber.

  319. And that plane has 120,000

  320. horsepower.

  321. That has twice as much horsepower as a

  322. container ship

  323. that can carry 20,000 containers across

  324. the Atlantic Ocean.

  325. That airplane is very, very different um

  326. than anything that we had seen before.

  327. In fact, here's a B-2 bomber with two

  328. F-117s that were fighter airplanes.

  329. Um and just kind of amazing aircraft.

  330. But, do you know why this plane looks so

  331. different?

  332. The reason these airplanes look so very

  333. different than the vintage airplanes

  334. is cuz they have a very special

  335. capability.

  336. They have a special capability to,

  337. listen to this, to totally avoid

  338. detection.

  339. It's what we call stealth technology.

  340. So, that's why it's has this very, very

  341. sleek shape, very different shape, and

  342. there's these angles on it. All of that

  343. is by design in order to not allow radar

  344. returns to come back to the radar that

  345. sent it. So, it winds up being lost. In

  346. fact, the F-117

  347. this airplane

  348. looks like the size of an orange

  349. to radar up to 300 mi away.

  350. So, it's very confusing for the enemy.

  351. They don't see it. They don't see it

  352. coming. Do you know the reason it's

  353. black?

  354. Because they operate at night.

  355. They come in the dark of night

  356. and they look very, very different. We

  357. could keep going on to the next

  358. generation fighters after that, the

  359. F-22,

  360. um the F-34,

  361. and then even now the announced F-47

  362. um that is going to be um developed.

  363. It's actually in development right now.

  364. But, I want you to compare this

  365. with this.

  366. Is there a little bit of a difference

  367. there?

  368. One was actually painted red.

  369. It It It wasn't really hiding.

  370. But the other one hides, right?

  371. What about this one? B-17.

  372. Loud, slow, big, shows up huge. That

  373. compared to

  374. that.

  375. Friends,

  376. in our lives in America,

  377. we need to understand

  378. that Satan has chosen

  379. the stealth strategy.

  380. He has chosen the strategy to go

  381. undetected.

  382. Other places in the world, not so much.

  383. There's tribes in Africa that are He

  384. shows up every day in various demonic

  385. forms. Everyone believes in demons

  386. because they've seen it. Everyone.

  387. We know people, we know friends, we know

  388. tribes, we know places where everyone

  389. knows

  390. You know where the devil is doubted? The

  391. devil is doubted in the West.

  392. Where he has chosen stealth.

  393. He has chosen to be unseen. He has

  394. chosen to be very quiet.

  395. He has chosen to come undetected.

  396. And so, that is why I show you all of

  397. these airplanes. There's There's

  398. different strategies in war.

  399. And there's different strategies

  400. in spiritual

  401. war. And so, this is why we see I want

  402. you to I want you to go and I want you

  403. to be reminded of this text. Look what

  404. it says. It It is reminding us,

  405. "Be sober.

  406. Be watchful."

  407. And And then he goes on to say, "Your

  408. adversary, the devil, prowls about like

  409. a roaring lion seeking someone to

  410. devour." And so, what I want to take a

  411. few minutes to do this morning is to

  412. recognize the reality of the adversary.

  413. Can you circle that? The reality of the

  414. adversary. Because there's a lot of

  415. people in the world today that doubt

  416. that.

  417. And And the devil has done a few

  418. different things. One of the things that

  419. he's chosen to do is to either be

  420. undetected or to make it a fairy tale.

  421. How does he make it a fairy tale?

  422. Do any of you have a Dirt Devil vacuum

  423. cleaner?

  424. Have you ever seen a Dirt Devil vacuum

  425. cleaner? It's this little red vacuum. We

  426. weren't allowed to have one cuz Dad

  427. said, "That has the devil on it. We're

  428. not going to have that."

  429. Kind of sort of kind of whatever.

  430. But the devil

  431. the devil has chosen to show up with a

  432. little guy with horns and a pitchfork

  433. and make it something laughable.

  434. And say, "Do you believe in that?"

  435. Um you got to be kidding me.

  436. But what's what Peter is reminding us as

  437. part of his final words in this letter

  438. going to churches all over the

  439. Mediterranean world, he's reminding us,

  440. "Look, be sober. Be watchful. Your

  441. adversary, the devil, prowls about like

  442. a roaring lion." What he's saying is,

  443. "The devil is" and fill it in, "the

  444. devil is real."

  445. And

  446. in this modern day of education and

  447. philosophy and everything else, we need

  448. to recognize that that is true.

  449. And we need to recognize how much God's

  450. word deals with this great adversary

  451. that

  452. has

  453. created such a war as we encounter on a

  454. daily basis. Now, I'm going to I'm going

  455. to just switch over here to letting you

  456. see this. Now, what we're part of what

  457. we're going to do this morning, we're

  458. going to study this topic of the devil.

  459. And I'm going to give you a little bit

  460. of what is called a systematic theology

  461. um based upon biblical theology. And the

  462. idea is this,

  463. the scripture says things all the way

  464. through narratively when you when you

  465. read it, but then sometimes it's good to

  466. go and look and see where all the places

  467. in scripture or many of the places in

  468. scripture mention a certain topic. So,

  469. that's called systematic theology. And

  470. so, you're going to really learn

  471. something this morning and I hope that

  472. you see a couple things. One of the

  473. things I hope you'll see is is the

  474. reality of and the evil one of the devil

  475. in the Bible. And so, let's start off

  476. with the names. Let's start off with the

  477. names. This is part of our systematic

  478. theology of this. Notice this, the

  479. various names. The first one is Satan.

  480. Satan. Notice that. And we see him

  481. called Satan in Job. We see him called

  482. Satan in Zechariah and Matthew and in

  483. Revelation. You guys can control the

  484. PowerPoint now.

  485. Satan is This is his actual name that is

  486. used in these passages of scripture. And

  487. this isn't a comprehensive list, but

  488. these are the main ones. Not only Satan,

  489. but what else is he called? What we've

  490. already used, the word devil. He is

  491. called a devil in Matthew chapter 4 and

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  492. John chapter 8 in Ephesians 6. The devil

    John 8 chapter mention

  493. is is mentioned over and over again. And

  494. then we also see the serpent. The

  495. serpent, we see that at the beginning in

  496. Genesis chapter 3, but we also see it in

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  497. 2 Corinthians referring back to that in

  498. Revelation chapter 12. We keep coming

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  499. back to that idea of the deceiver in a

  500. serpent. Not only a serpent, but a

  501. fearsome dragon.

  502. We see this in in Revelation

  503. all through Revelation we see the dragon

  504. mentioned referring often to the devil.

  505. Jesus would call him the evil one. So

  506. Jesus used uh the evil one commonly and

  507. um

  508. we also see the tempter.

  509. We see the tempter is used in Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  510. chapter 4 when Jesus is tempted. Jesus

  511. begins his ministry and right when he

  512. begins his ministry at 30 years of age,

  513. we see Satan come to him and it says the

  514. tempter came to him to tempt him.

  515. Not only the tempter, but Zechariah in

  516. Revelation calls him the accuser. The

  517. accuser of the brethren we might say.

  518. The the accuser who seeks to accuse

  519. against

  520. God's work in our lives. The father of

  521. what? The father of lies. He's called

  522. the father of lies. Jesus uses that in

  523. John 8:44.

    John 8:44

  524. We also see that he was called a

  525. murderer. For the devil it says has

  526. murdered from the beginning.

  527. And we see that in Genesis 3 when Cain

  528. kills Abel. And in fact, when the

  529. temptation to sin in a way

  530. um there's this picture of murder

  531. because God had said the day that you

  532. sin, the moment you sin, you shall

  533. surely die. This is the temptation

  534. towards sin which would bring about

  535. death. He is the murderer from the

  536. beginning.

  537. He's also called by Jesus the ruler of

  538. this world. You say, "Well, wait a

  539. minute. I thought God is the ruler of

  540. this world." Well, it's talking about

  541. this specific time, this specific place,

  542. this place of the world. He has been

  543. given a leash

  544. and he has a certain power. Now, he's

  545. not the only ruler of this world. God

  546. supremely rules over him, but he has

  547. been given a little bit of time and a

  548. little bit of power.

  549. He's also called the god of this age.

  550. He's not called God. He's called the god

  551. of this age.

  552. And so, the idea is this is a powerful

  553. force that has been given a leash.

  554. He's also called the prince of the power

  555. of the air. You say, "Well, I would

  556. think that that's referring to Jesus."

  557. No, read Ephesians 2. You find out that

  558. that is Paul referring to Satan.

  559. He's called Beelzebub. He's called

  560. Belial. He's called Apollyon

  561. in Revelation chapter 9. So, these are

    Revelation 9 chapter mention

  562. the main ways and what when you look at

  563. this list before you turn the page, when

  564. you just look at this list, look at all

  565. those passages, Old Testament and New

  566. Testament.

  567. The Bible

  568. gives a very clear description of a very

  569. real adversary

  570. that is in the world throughout time.

  571. Well, let's look at some realities about

  572. the origin of Satan.

  573. We can't answer all of them because

  574. there's some things that we don't

  575. understand about the origin of Satan,

  576. but we can look at God's word and we can

  577. know these things. Number one, Satan is

  578. a created being. He's not eternal. That

  579. means that he There was a time when he

  580. didn't exist and then he does exist. So,

  581. he's not like God the Father, God the

  582. Son, and God the Holy Spirit who existed

  583. in all of eternity past, Satan was

  584. created. You say, "Well, that that's

  585. difficult for me to understand. Why

  586. would God do that?" We're not going to

  587. even answer that question because we we

  588. can in some ways, and the main thing

  589. that I would say about that is is that

  590. God has done all things well. God has

  591. never made a mistake.

  592. And in his wisdom, he has hatched a plan

  593. for his glory and believe it or not for

  594. our good.

  595. And so, what we see here is that Satan

  596. was a created being. He was not eternal.

  597. Here's the next one. This will be a

  598. mind-blower for you. Satan was

  599. originally good. How do we know that?

  600. Because Genesis 1:31 says that God's

    Genesis 1:31

  601. creation was good.

  602. And on the sixth day, when it was

  603. finished, God's creation was good. All

  604. was good.

  605. But what we see eventually, and this is

  606. referenced in 1 Timothy chapter 3 and

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  607. Isaiah 14, and we even see it over in

  608. Revelation, that number three, Satan

  609. fell through pride and rebellion.

  610. Through pride and rebellion, Satan fell.

  611. He was an angel that fell.

  612. Number four, Satan sinned before human

  613. sin entered the world. So, something

  614. back there before human sin entered the

  615. world. All we can say is is that

  616. something [snorts] had gone wrong, as so

  617. to speak, in Satan's existence,

  618. um before something went wrong in our

  619. existence. So, he sinned before human

  620. sin entered the world. Number five, some

  621. angels sinned and are under judgment.

  622. So, there was only Satan, but there were

  623. others with him. And we see that

  624. referenced in 2 Peter 2 and in Jude 6.

  625. Also, in Isaiah chapter 14 and Ezekiel

    Isaiah 14 chapter mention

  626. 28, it's very interesting. It appears to

  627. refer to two earthly kings,

  628. but the language is so hyperbolic.

  629. And

  630. we look at it and we say, "This is one

  631. of those areas of prophecy, cuz Isaiah

  632. and Ezekiel are proph- prophetic books,

  633. prophetic messages, that it appears that

  634. there's a double prophecy here. It's not

  635. only talking about in Isaiah 14 a king

  636. of Babylon and Ezekiel 28 the king of

  637. Tyre, but listen to this, it is also a

  638. secondary prophecy that is pointing to

  639. Satan." I believe that. I believe that

  640. those passages are saying, "This is what

  641. it looks like in a physical earthly way,

  642. and then we see an overlay of this in a

  643. much bigger picture

  644. of satanic deception and satanic work.

  645. So,

  646. devil's origin, main thing that we need

  647. to recognize there is number one, he

  648. exists. Number two, that God has a plan.

  649. His ways are higher than our ways. His

  650. thoughts are higher than our thoughts.

  651. So far as the heavens are above the

  652. earth are his thoughts higher than our

  653. thoughts. God knows exactly what he's

  654. doing and he does all things well.

  655. And so, in his wisdom, this has

  656. happened. The Satan didn't escape out of

  657. the bottle.

  658. Um and and God was caught unaware. That

  659. is not what happened.

  660. God knows exactly what he's doing.

  661. Notice this.

  662. Major actions of the devil in the Old

  663. Testament.

  664. In Genesis chapter 3, we see that he

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  665. deceives Eve.

  666. And you could say Adam, too, but this

  667. text is specifically showing us that

  668. Adam,

  669. in part because of his own deficiencies

  670. and his own failures, did not intervene,

  671. did not protect his wife, did not lead

  672. his wife in this,

  673. but Satan deceives Eve, contradicts

  674. God's word, that's what he does when he

  675. deceives her, and he introduces, circle

  676. that word, suspicion toward God. We're

  677. going to see that in just a minute. In

  678. Genesis 3, he deceives Eve. In Job 1 and

  679. 2, he accuses Job.

  680. We we see that God says, "Have you

  681. considered my servant Job?"

  682. And Satan says, "Yeah, the only reason

  683. he loves you is because you've blessed

  684. him.

  685. If you take away all of his wealth,

  686. he will not bless you any longer." This

  687. is a conversation between God and Satan.

  688. And God gives Satan permission to touch

  689. Job, to to start dealing with Job.

  690. And when Job still continues to confess

  691. the Lord, he says, "Well, if he if he

  692. loses his health, then that'll be it."

  693. You see, he's accusing Job as being a

  694. fake.

  695. How about 1 Chronicles chapter 21?

    1 Chronicles 21 chapter mention

  696. Satan incites David to count the number

  697. in Israel when he was not to do that.

  698. We see that there was a deception there.

  699. In Zechariah chapter 3, he accuses

    Zechariah 3 chapter mention

  700. Joshua, the high priest, and the Lord

  701. rebukes Satan.

  702. In Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28, as we said,

  703. pride,

  704. he attempted exaltation,

  705. and then a fall from high position.

  706. That's where we read about his fall. And

  707. as I said, a double prophecy. Earthly

  708. kings, yes, but grander meaning pointing

  709. to Satan. Study it for yourself. It's

  710. very interesting.

  711. So, the Old Testament themes of

  712. deception,

  713. accusation,

  714. affliction, pride Satan's doing all of

  715. these, opposition to God's people,

  716. Satan's doing that. And attempts, look

  717. at this. What he's really seeking to do

  718. in the Old Testament is to attempt to

  719. corrupt worship.

  720. He wants to interrupt and to corrupt

  721. worship.

  722. And he wants desperately to interrupt

  723. and corrupt faith

  724. or trust in God.

  725. And so, time and time again, he is

  726. seeking to come and to take that away

  727. from God's people. That's the Old

  728. Testament.

  729. Look with me at the New Testament. You

  730. say, "Golly, I didn't realize the devil

  731. was so much in the Bible." How many of

  732. you would say that right now? You're

  733. looking at these and you're just going,

  734. "I'm kind of surprised he's in there

  735. that much." Anybody surprised by that?

  736. Oh, you guys are Bible scholars. Great.

  737. As I study it, I'm serious. I'm sitting

  738. here going, "Oh, wow."

  739. He's here a lot.

  740. Look at Notice this. In Matthew 4, he

  741. tempts Jesus in the wilderness, also

  742. recorded recorded in Luke 4. Matthew 13,

  743. Jesus is giving the parable of the five

  744. swords and he says that the devil comes

  745. and snatches the word.

  746. He corrupts

  747. the gospel from going into the heart. He

  748. snatches the word from their hearts.

  749. And he sows weeds among the wheat.

  750. How about in Luke 22? He enters Judas.

  751. Enters Judas

  752. to betray the Lord.

  753. And even we see Jesus speaking and turns

  754. around and looks at Peter and he says,

  755. "Peter, Satan has [snorts] demanded to

  756. sift you like wheat."

  757. And so we see

  758. this in the heavenlies, a great

  759. involvement

  760. of the devil.

  761. Jesus calls him the liar, the murderer,

  762. the father of lies.

  763. And look at this. In Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  764. there was a guy named Ananias and his

  765. wife Sapphira.

  766. And it says that Satan entered into put

  767. into Ananias' heart

  768. to lie to the church.

  769. And Ananias was struck dead. And

  770. Sapphira was struck dead for their lying

  771. to the church.

  772. Very interesting that that came

  773. from Satan.

  774. Second Corinthians, he has schemes and

  775. designs. They're elaborate. Second

  776. Corinthians 4, he blinds unbelievers to

  777. the gospel.

  778. We'll see that again in just a moment.

  779. In Second Corinthians 11, he deceives,

  780. he disguises himself as an angel of

  781. light.

  782. As an angel of light.

  783. Is this This is a very very serious

  784. business of deception.

  785. That you can be deceived. I can be

  786. deceived

  787. if we are not what Peter says,

  788. sober-minded and watchful.

  789. There's many in this room that have come

  790. to me and said, "I was deceived."

  791. I was deceived when I went down this

  792. road in my life and when I made these

  793. decisions in my life, I was deceived

  794. that this was that this was right when

  795. in fact it was wrong.

  796. I was deceived about this doctrine or

  797. this belief.

  798. I was deceived about this issue in this

  799. condition of my heart.

  800. Because Satan

  801. can say all is well when it's not.

  802. Ephesians chapter 2, he works in the

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  803. sons of disobedience. Ephesians 6, he

  804. leads spiritual forces of evil. That's

  805. where you are called to put on the

  806. spiritual armor of God. Why? Because

  807. there is a very real devil.

  808. How about 1 Thessalonians? He hinders

  809. gospel ministry. He seeks to come in and

  810. stop the gospel from moving forward. He

  811. wants to destroy. He wants to disrupt

  812. churches. He wants to stop world

  813. missions. He wants to stop evangelism.

  814. He wants to stop discipleship.

  815. He's seeking to

  816. hinder gospel ministry.

  817. And in this text 5:8, he prowls about

  818. like a roaring lion. In Revelation

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  819. chapter 12, he is called and this is

  820. kind of a cumulative pentacle type view

  821. of what he does is he accuses believers

  822. and he persecutes the church. He would

  823. destroy it if he could.

  824. Because he hates the worship of God.

  825. In Revelation 20, he is ultimately bound

  826. and he is judged and he is thrown into

  827. the lake of fire.

  828. So his end will be the lake of fire.

  829. Prepared for the devil and his angels

  830. and all of those

  831. who are sons

  832. of disobedience.

  833. So, we want to see this as what it is,

  834. the devil's opposition

  835. to God himself.

  836. That's what it is, the devil's

  837. opposition to God himself. How does

  838. Satan oppose God? Very quickly, number

  839. one, Satan contradicts

  840. what God has said.

  841. When when when we talk about what God

  842. has said, that we mean his word.

  843. Satan always contradicts God's word.

  844. Look at Genesis chapter 3 and verse 1

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  845. through 5. Here's the first example of

  846. it. We see Satan, the serpent, comes to

  847. Eve in the garden. Look what happens.

  848. Now, the serpent was more crafty than

  849. any of the wild animals the Lord God had

  850. made. He said to the woman, "Did God

  851. really say

  852. you must not eat from any tree in the

  853. garden?" You see what he says does

  854. there? Did he says, "Did God say you

  855. must not eat from any tree in the

  856. garden?" Is that what God said?

  857. No, that's not what he said.

  858. He said, "You're not to eat from

  859. this tree."

  860. So, he starts off lying.

  861. He starts off twisting. He starts off

  862. turning the narrative.

  863. "Did God really say you must not eat

  864. from any tree of the

  865. any tree in the garden?" And the woman

  866. said to him, "We may eat from the trees

  867. in the garden, but God did say you must

  868. not eat from the tree that is in the

  869. middle of the garden, and you must not

  870. touch it." Look what it says.

  871. "Or you will die."

  872. Look at verse four.

  873. "You [snorts] will not certainly die."

  874. The serpent said to the woman.

  875. You see,

  876. number one there,

  877. Satan contradicts what God has said.

  878. Oh, you've got to be kidding me. Yeah,

  879. Pastor Andrew mentioned that thing in

  880. his sermon and everything else, but oh,

  881. come on, man. It's no big deal. I mean,

  882. look, you you know, look at it. It

  883. actually feels good or or you know, you

  884. like that. It tastes good or whatever.

  885. And how can something that feels so

  886. right be so wrong? Come on.

  887. Well, this is just really what I want to

  888. do and it, you know, it makes me happy.

  889. How could it be wrong?

  890. There's all kinds of application to that

  891. in every life here.

  892. Number two, Satan not only contradicts

  893. what God has said, Satan slanders

  894. [snorts]

  895. God's character.

  896. And we see that. Just let your eyes go

  897. back up to where I stopped reading in

  898. verse four. It says, "You will not

  899. certainly die." The serpent said to the

  900. woman. In verse five, look what it says.

  901. "For God knows that when you eat from

  902. it, your eyes will be opened and you

  903. will be like God, knowing good and

  904. evil."

  905. Well, this point we should recognize

  906. that we can't trust anything that he

  907. says, but notice this.

  908. And this isn't on your outline, but

  909. notice the line that is on the next

  910. slide here. Satan infers that God is

  911. holding out on you.

  912. That's what Satan's doing. He's

  913. inferring that God is not going to give

  914. you what you really need or what you

  915. should really have.

  916. Now, you just think about the ludicrous

  917. idea of that. He comes himself and lays

  918. down on a Roman cross and dies in your

  919. place. What will he not give you?

  920. He gives you his head on a platter. He

  921. gives you his life. He gives you his

  922. only son. But Satan wants to convince

  923. you

  924. you're not going to have all you need

  925. and it's cuz God didn't want you to have

  926. it.

  927. That's the oldest lie in the book.

  928. And that's what you tell yourself when

  929. you just start thinking, you know, I'm

  930. making plans for my life and I think I'm

  931. going to go do this and you know, this

  932. and this isn't that bad and then this

  933. other little turn and this other little

  934. turn comes along. Oh, it can't be that,

  935. you know, it's it's probably all right

  936. and then and it and you keep convincing

  937. yourself till you get down roads that

  938. are far from God.

  939. And part of that is

  940. well,

  941. you know,

  942. God can't really mean that.

  943. Um,

  944. it's how we destroy our lives.

  945. Number three,

  946. how does Satan oppose God? Satan seeks

  947. worship for himself.

  948. That's what he wants and we see it in

  949. Matthew chapter four during when Satan

  950. comes tempting Jesus. He says, "Jesus,

  951. let me show you all the kingdoms of the

  952. world. If you'll just bow down and

  953. worship me, I'll give you all the

  954. kingdoms of the world."

  955. Well, first of all, they were not truly

  956. his to give. Now, he is the principal of

  957. the air, he is the god of this age and

  958. that's part of what that means. There

  959. are certain things that Satan can give.

  960. But ultimately, he's saying this to the

  961. creator of all things, the creator of

  962. the universe.

  963. And he desperately wanted Jesus to get

  964. off mission and not do the mission that

  965. the father had given him.

  966. And Satan will say the same thing to

  967. you.

  968. He wants desperately for you to get off

  969. mission from God.

  970. He wants your life to not count for God.

  971. He wants to distract you away from what

  972. God has called you to do in living your

  973. life for him, doing whatever he's called

  974. you to do, living your life for him. He

  975. wants desperately for you to live it for

  976. yourself, to build your own kingdom.

  977. That's what the temptation was.

  978. Come and build your own kingdom.

  979. And ultimately,

  980. you will be, whether you recognize it or

  981. not, worshipping him instead of God.

  982. Number four, Satan opposes Christ's

  983. mission

  984. to rescue God's people from their sin.

  985. That's what we see in Matthew 4. So,

  986. he's seeking worship and he's seeking to

  987. stop Christ's mission.

  988. We see it when Jesus tells the

  989. disciples, "I must go to Jerusalem and

  990. die." And what did Peter say?

  991. "No way, Lord. You can't do that." And

  992. what did Jesus say to Peter when Peter

  993. was saying, "No, you can't go die."

  994. He said, "Get behind me, Satan."

  995. Do you see how this works? Do you see

  996. the Bible fits together like lock and

  997. key?

  998. The whole thing.

  999. >> [sighs]

1000. >> Satan, number five, blinds people to

  1001. God's glory.

1002. Satan blinds people to God's glory in

1003. Christ. Second Corinthians chapter 4 is

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  1004. something that's

1005. very important for you to look at. And

1006. you're wondering, "How can people not

1007. see?" I mean, Jim prayed it at the

1008. beginning of this or the in his pastoral

  1009. prayer. Jim prayed, "Lord, I don't

  1010. understand how

1011. how people can't see. How is it that

1012. people can see the world and they see

1013. the glory of the universe and deny you

1014. as its creator instead choosing to

  1015. believe

1016. some very illogical things that this all

  1017. came from nothing.

1018. Somehow it started. Okay, fine, physical

  1019. matter. How did

1020. something came from something from

  1021. nothing?

1022. And then we get down to the chances of

1023. life. How does life come about? There

1024. are glorious glorious interactions with

1025. tremendous scientists that will say to

1026. you at the highest level saying, "No one

1027. is explaining how life came to be.

  1028. They're not anywhere close."

1029. I may put one of those on the chat or

1030. excuse me, in the Monday message

1031. tomorrow. I listened to one this week by

1032. the world's top scientists that are

1033. believers. And uh people from from

1034. Edinburgh, people from Oxford, people

  1035. from

1036. MIT and Princeton um and uh wonderful

  1037. believing um

1038. uh molecular biologists that say,

1039. "The greatest thing that the world has

1040. to say about where life has come from,

  1041. they they are

1042. they are magnitudes away from explaining

1043. how life would ever have been started."

1044. Um very interesting to listen to. But he

1045. blinds people So how is it that we're so

  1046. blind? Look at 2

    2 Corinthians 4:4

1047. Corinthians 4:4. Look what it says. In

1048. their case, the god of this world, so

1049. there's that phrase, the god of this

  1050. world

1051. has blinded the minds of the unbelievers

1052. to keep them from seeing and seeing

1053. what? The light of the gospel of the

1054. glory of Christ who is the image of God.

1055. So, one of the things one of the things

1056. that when you're praying for a lost

  1057. person

1058. that you love and that you want them so

1059. much to come to faith, one of the things

1060. for you to do is to pray, "Lord God,

1061. I don't know how all this works in the

1062. heavenlies, but I know that you took the

1063. scales that were on Saul's eyes and the

1064. word in Acts tells me that the scales

1065. fell off his eyes and he could

  1066. understand the gospel.

1067. And just like you opened his eyes and

1068. just like you opened many others, Lord,

  1069. would you open

  1070. my friend's eyes?

  1071. Lord, you can cause

1072. the blinded eyes to see."

  1073. Notice this, number six.

1074. How does Satan oppose God? Number six,

  1075. Satan counterfeits truth and

  1076. righteousness.

1077. He counterfeits truth and righteousness.

1078. Just like there's counterfeit money that

1079. is fake and it's not real and it has no

1080. value and in fact it's deceptive and

  1081. it's part of a scheme, it's part of

  1082. fraud. It's fraud. That's what

1083. counterfeit money is. It's fraud.

1084. Look at this, 2 Corinthians chapter 11

    2 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

1085. and verse 15 13 through 15. For such men

1086. are what? False prophets, deceitful

  1087. working, disguising themselves as

1088. apostles of Christ. Verse 14, "And no

  1089. wonder,

1090. for even Satan disguises himself as an

1091. angel of light." So, a disguise, a

  1092. counterfeit.

  1093. An angel of light.

1094. Verse 15, "So, it is no surprise if his

1095. servants also disguise themselves as

1096. servants of righteousness. Their end

1097. will correspond to their deeds. That

1098. what he's saying is they're going to get

1099. it. They're going to get theirs.

  1100. But Satan counterfeits it.

  1101. Number seven, finally.

  1102. Satan makes war

  1103. against God's people.

1104. Satan makes war against God's people.

1105. That means Satan makes war against you

  1106. if you are

1107. God's people. Look at Revelation chapter

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

1108. 12, and this is really the heart of

1109. Revelation. This is the heart of the

1110. whole thing, and it's this massive

1111. conflict between God and Satan that

  1112. winds up

1113. where God prevails ultimately, and Satan

1114. is finally put away. But look with me in

1115. Revelation 12:17. Then the dragon became

    Revelation 12:17

  1116. furious

1117. with the woman and went off to make war

1118. on what? The rest of her offspring, and

1119. on those who keep the commandments of

1120. God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.

1121. Now, there's been a lot of debate over

1122. the years of who is the woman? What is

1123. that talking about? Is that Mary? What

1124. is that? Is that Is that Eve?

1125. Is that Mary? Is it Eve? Is it Is it the

1126. church? We would say we would suggest to

1127. you that it is the bride of Christ, the

  1128. church, God's people.

1129. And so, he makes war against the whole

  1130. church,

1131. and he makes it And notice this. So, he

1132. makes war against the church, and he

1133. goes off and he makes war against the

1134. rest of her offspring. So, all those who

  1135. are are coming

  1136. to him.

1137. Those who keep his commandments

1138. and hold to the testimony of who?

  1139. Jesus.

1140. This is the beauty of the true

  1141. Christian.

  1142. And this is

  1143. also the curse

1144. of Satan's work against the Christian.

1145. So, a few points as we finalize. Through

1146. Christ, God calls us not to be a

  1147. casualty

  1148. of this satanic war.

1149. God calls you through Christ to not be a

  1150. casualty

  1151. of this satanic war.

1152. Because of Christ, circle that, through

1153. Christ. That's the only way to avoid

1154. becoming a casualty of this war.

  1155. Because

1156. point number two, the eternal victor,

  1157. the eternal victor is

1158. in this conflict, is Christ Jesus.

1159. He wins and rules over this fearsome

  1160. adversary

1161. who's roaring like a lion, as Peter

  1162. says.

1163. You see, notice here with me, our

  1164. rescue,

1165. our fortress, our deliverer, strangely

  1166. enough,

1167. is the lamb who was slain.

1168. The lamb who was slain a a lamb is very

  1169. different than a lion.

1170. But this is the ways of God. God's ways

1171. are higher than our ways. His thoughts

1172. are higher than our thoughts. He does

1173. things differently than we do. So, our

1174. rescue, our fortress, our deliverer is

1175. the lamb slain by the will of God.

1176. And [snorts] he is raised by the power

  1177. of God

  1178. all for

  1179. the people of God

1180. and the glory of God.

1181. See, this is God's grand and glorious

  1182. plan.

  1183. So,

  1184. friends, when we

1185. study the devil, and I I don't want to

1186. say to the children in this room,

1187. you've heard a sermon today about the

  1188. devil.

1189. There's a good and right holy fear that

  1190. you should have.

1191. But the one who you should fear more

  1192. than the devil

1193. is your loving heavenly father.

  1194. When you recognize

1195. that the heavenly father rules

  1196. over this evil one

1197. and you respect him and you honor him

  1198. and you know him.

1199. You believe in him. You trust in him.

  1200. The Bible says

1201. that he is your deliverer.

  1202. He is your fortress.

1203. And in fact it says

1204. you have no more to fear.

  1205. So

  1206. the devil

1207. wants you to either not believe in him

1208. or the devil devil wants you to fear

  1209. him.

  1210. When God is saying

  1211. remember

  1212. the victor

  1213. over him.

1214. So look at 1 John chapter 3 and verse 8.

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  1215. Look what it says.

1216. The reason the Son of God

1217. appeared was to What does it say?

1218. Destroy the works of the devil.

1219. That's the reason he came.

1220. And that's the reason that we are safe

  1221. in him. Amen?

1222. You may stand together as we pray.

1223. Father, I pray this morning that what we

1224. have studied would go down deep into our

  1225. hearts.

  1226. That we would recognize

1227. what Peter is calling us to recognize.

1228. That Lord Satan is real.

1229. He intends to harm us.

1230. He will do all that he can

  1231. to that end

  1232. if we allow him.

1233. But Lord, I thank you that you've told

1234. us to be vigilant, to be aware,

1235. and that we would trust

  1236. in your victory

1237. over sin and over death

1238. and over [music] an adversary

  1239. that is against us.

1240. Lord, I pray this morning that Sheridan

1241. Hills would be a more holy church

1242. because we are more aware

  1243. of Satan's schemes.

1244. I pray that we would be a people who

1245. don't easily get tripped up and deceived

1246. and and fall into the foolishness of his

  1247. traps.

1248. I pray that we would be willing to call

  1249. it what it is,

1250. to call him what he is,

  1251. a liar and a deceiver,

1252. a murderer from the beginning.

1253. And instead, Lord, that we would one run

  1254. to the one

  1255. who

  1256. calls himself truth

  1257. and calls himself salvation.

1258. Father, thank you for your goodness.

1259. Thank you for giving us Christ.

1260. And I pray that we would live and walk

1261. in victory instead of deception

1262. and instead of destruction. In Jesus'

1263. name. Amen. Would you lift up your voice

  1264. and sing this morning?
