  1. Hebrews chapter 1

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  2. in many ways is appropriate for Father's

  3. Day,

  4. but we don't suit the biblical text to

  5. the holidays that are set by the nation.

  6. The word of God is what dictates

  7. what we believe and what we see.

  8. And so, I thank God that Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  9. 1 landed on today.

  10. As we've been planning this for several

  11. weeks, I've been thinking about Hebrews

  12. 1

  13. and how this is a Father's Day passage

  14. in some ways, and at least three ways.

  15. If you're fatherless,

  16. you have a father in God,

  17. and he speaks to you today.

  18. If you're a father,

  19. you must take the word

  20. and exhort your children.

  21. But there's another way that this

  22. passage reminds me of the fatherhood of

  23. God.

  24. God is always so tender and patient with

  25. his people.

  26. The father

  27. always brings us along gently and slowly

  28. in this book.

  29. He goes back to the basics, back back to

  30. the foundation.

  31. And he reminds us of a key,

  32. a foundational

  33. passage,

  34. a foundational reminder. That's what a

  35. good father does. He goes back to the

  36. basics, repeats himself ad nauseam,

  37. says it over and over and over again.

  38. And we can't get sick and tired of

  39. hearing what the father says to us today

  40. through the son.

  41. Because when he speaks through the son,

  42. he's going to say the same thing over

  43. and over and over again. There's many

  44. foundational biblical passages that you

  45. and I need to know as Christians.

  46. Every Christian needs to know these

  47. passages, and there's many more. I did

  48. not have the space. We could say the

  49. entire Bible

  50. is foundational to your faith, but there

  51. are those key passages that condense in

  52. a very small

  53. series of verses key biblical truths.

  54. One day

  55. and God is such a good father to do

  56. this.

  57. One day through the scriptures you may

  58. need to recall to your heart and to your

  59. mind some important truths in order to

  60. endure great trials. You can fill that

  61. in on your second bullet point.

  62. A key question here

  63. as God speaks through his word today and

  64. tells us about the son.

  65. When you face trials

  66. will you seek God's voice apart from

  67. Jesus

  68. or

  69. will Jesus be enough for you?

  70. Let me give you some foundational truths

  71. that you probably need to know.

  72. And I've listed them out here. These

  73. were off the top of my mind. I'm sure

  74. you probably have some other great

  75. foundational passages. You can write

  76. them off to the side, but if you're a

  77. Christian, the father wants you to know

  78. that Genesis 1 and 3 is in the Bible.

  79. He's your creator. And he made you male

  80. or female.

  81. And God the Father also discloses to us

  82. that our original parents, Adam and Eve,

  83. fell.

  84. Where Adam failed as a father

  85. Romans 5 says Jesus succeeded as the

  86. son.

  87. In Exodus 20, the father gives commands.

  88. He says, "Do this, do this, don't do

  89. this." The 10 Commandments. That's a

  90. foundational passage for you and me,

  91. brother and sister.

  92. What about the Psalms, the tender heart

  93. of God the Father?

  94. Psalms 1 and 2 tell us about

  95. the beauty of a righteous man planted by

  96. streams of living water.

  97. Psalm 8

  98. answers the question, "Why does God

  99. regard man?" Why does he do that?

  100. Psalm 16, Psalm 19, Psalm 22, all of

  101. these Psalms are foundational and you

  102. should know them.

  103. Well, the Father also reveals in time

  104. Isaiah 53, the suffering servant. The

  105. Father will send a servant to come and

  106. to suffer

  107. so that he might make many righteous.

  108. The Father also shows us promises in the

  109. scriptures, Jeremiah 31. The promise of

  110. a new covenant. The old one had not done

  111. so well. The The people had not done so

  112. well with it. The covenant was okay, but

  113. the people were not.

  114. And so, the Father then has to say, "I

  115. will write my law in your heart. You

  116. will not need to remember the truth

  117. anymore because I will recall it. It'll

  118. be in your mind. Nobody will need to

  119. teach anybody."

  120. The promise of the new covenant is a

  121. real promise from a real fatherly God.

  122. The Father also sends the Son in in

  123. Matthew 28, uh the Son

  124. the Lord Jesus Christ stands and says,

  125. "All authority has been handed to me by

  126. the Father. Go, I'm sending you now."

  127. Matthew 28 is a foundational passage. Uh

  128. John 1, the word made flesh is a

  129. foundational passage to your faith and

  130. my faith.

  131. The Father and the Son, we're told, were

  132. there at the creation of the world.

  133. In John 13 to 17, Jesus says, "If you

  134. have seen me,

  135. you have seen the Father."

  136. These are foundational. Romans 6 to 8,

  137. not only are you free from sin through

  138. Christ, you're alive to Christ, you live

  139. by the Spirit, and you're loved by the

  140. Father.

  141. And that beautiful chapter, Romans 8,

  142. says, "What can separate you from the

  143. love of the Father?" Nothing.

  144. Because you're sealed by the Spirit

  145. through Christ.

  146. In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul receives the

  147. gospel and we're told, this is the

  148. longest chapter on the resurrection.

  149. In Galatians 5, the Father wants us to

  150. know how to live by the Spirit.

  151. In Ephesians 2, we are told that we were

  152. dead, but now we're made alive through

  153. the Father by grace and faith through

  154. Christ.

  155. In Philippians chapter 2, we're told

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  156. that having the mindset of Christ means

  157. laying down, laying aside your needs

  158. just like Jesus did, the Son,

  159. in order to be exalted by the Father.

  160. In Colossians 1:15-20, we're told that

    Colossians 1:15–20

  161. the Father made Christ to be preeminent.

  162. He is the most supreme.

  163. And finally, in 1 John 4, the love of

  164. God was shown in Christ.

  165. The Father demonstrates his love for

  166. sinners by sending the Son.

  167. Why am I sharing all these foundational

  168. passages with you? Because Hebrews

  169. chapter 1:1-4

  170. is a foundational passage for you and

  171. me, brother and sister.

  172. It is one of the most important passages

  173. to wrap your mind around.

  174. The Father's plan is to reveal now in

  175. these days his will

  176. through the Son.

  177. What a great Father that God is

  178. to show us

  179. the Son.

  180. So, let's look at the Epistle of

  181. Hebrews. Let's look at some background

  182. here. This is a sermon, a letter written

  183. as a word of exhortation. Exhortation

  184. means to uplift, to encourage, to in an

  185. excited and in an

  186. in an in an urgent way to bring about

  187. encouragement. And so, you see this

  188. urgency in the letter. You see the call

  189. to correction.

  190. He's exhorting them. He's trying to

  191. encourage them to pursue faith in the

  192. midst of persecution.

  193. Now, who was this written by?

  194. I like Origen's answer to this question.

  195. God only knows certainly.

  196. We don't know who wrote Hebrews, only

  197. God knows.

  198. And we can also say that God wrote this

  199. for our benefit.

  200. This was written to Jewish Christians

  201. living in Italy at the time.

  202. And this is important. I I want to spend

  203. a little time here unpacking the

  204. audience for you and for me this

  205. morning. These Christians are exhorted

  206. to pay attention to the gospel in order

  207. not to drift.

  208. This is important because in the

  209. Christian faith we can drift.

  210. When trials come we can drift.

  211. When obstacles entangle us we can drift.

  212. And so this letter

  213. read like a father to these children of

  214. the faith

  215. is an exhortation to remain

  216. steadfast, to pay attention to the

  217. gospel in order not to drift. In Hebrews

    Hebrews 3 chapter mention

  218. chapter 3

  219. the people are challenged to take care

  220. and hold fast to Christ.

  221. In Hebrews 5: 11 to 12, they're rebuked

  222. for having become dull of hearing.

  223. They should be teachers but they need

  224. the basic principles.

  225. They had suffered the seizure of

  226. property for being Christians. In

  227. Hebrews 10 we're told

  228. that they gave up a lot.

  229. Some were avoiding outsiders.

  230. Some were forsaking even the church.

  231. Standing with the Lord Jesus to these

  232. believers could mean imprisonment.

  233. Just like Timothy in Hebrews 13 we're

  234. told was released from prison.

  235. But it could also mean eventual

  236. martyrdom,

  237. dying, being put to death for the sake

  238. of Christ.

  239. Just as many from of old were put to

  240. death.

  241. In Hebrews 12

  242. the writer encourages

  243. his audience to lift your drooping hands

  244. and strengthen your weak knees and make

  245. straight paths for your feet so that

  246. what is lame may not be put out of

  247. joint, but rather be healed. You see,

  248. this group of believers had been

  249. suffering under the pressure of trials

  250. and persecution and in Hebrews 12, the

  251. writer says something beautiful. He

  252. says, this right here

  253. is discipline from a loving father.

  254. A loving father's discipline their

  255. children.

  256. A father's do not discipline those who

  257. are not their children. Of course they

  258. don't.

  259. And the writer of Hebrews says rightly,

  260. your father is a loving father.

  261. This is a good thing.

  262. So, be strong, be encouraged,

  263. strengthen yourselves.

  264. In the final exhortation in Hebrews 13

    Hebrews 13:13–14

  265. verses 13 to 14, the writer challenges

  266. the readers to bear the reproach of that

  267. Christ endured. So, this morning,

  268. Sheridan Hills Baptist Church,

  269. what will God say to you to help you

  270. endure in the faith?

  271. He'll say this,

  272. Jesus is better.

  273. He's better than anything.

  274. See how good of a father God is?

  275. He points you to the son.

  276. Says Jesus is better.

  277. Well, let's look at how Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 1:1–4

  278. 1 verse 1 to 4 unfolds.

  279. We're told here at the beginning.

  280. Let's read the passage together. It's on

  281. your outline on the top there.

  282. Long ago at many times

  283. and in many ways,

  284. God spoke to our fathers by the

  285. prophets,

  286. but in these last days,

  287. he has spoken to us by his son. You can

  288. circle

  289. son.

  290. Who is the son? He appointed him the

  291. heir of all things, through whom also he

  292. created the world. He is the radiance of

  293. the glory of God and the exact imprint

  294. of his nature, and he upholds the

  295. universe by the word of his power. After

  296. making purification for sins, he sat

  297. down at the right hand of the majesty on

  298. high,

  299. having become as much superior to angels

  300. as the name he has inherited is more

  301. excellent than theirs.

  302. This is the word of God. Amen.

  303. Notice number one that God spoke long

  304. ago.

  305. In verse one, we're told that he spoke

  306. long ago at many times and in many ways.

  307. Let me rehearse for you some of the ways

  308. that God spoke.

  309. These are extraordinary. God appeared to

  310. Abraham and Jacob in human form in

  311. Genesis 18 and 20 and 32.

  312. God sent Joseph dreams and

  313. interpretation in in Genesis 40, Joseph

  314. says, "All dreams and interpretations

  315. belong to God."

  316. God spoke to Moses at Sinai in the

  317. thunder and lightning and the voice of a

  318. trumpet. He trembled the entire

  319. mountain.

  320. God used a donkey to speak prophecies,

  321. Numbers 21 to 24.

  322. God whispered to Elijah at Horeb in a

  323. small voice.

  324. Elijah had thought that

  325. God would come and be magnificent and

  326. majestic and do these mighty things,

  327. and yet

  328. God came in a small voice to remind

  329. Elijah

  330. that there are still faithful few.

  331. God informed Ezekiel through visions. He

  332. saw lots of bizarre things if you read

  333. the letter

  334. or the the book of Ezekiel, you'll see

  335. that he saw flying objects, he saw

  336. different creatures.

  337. Ezekiel even performed some bizarre

  338. symbolic acts to communicate God's

  339. message to God's people.

  340. God spoke to Daniel through dreams as

  341. well.

  342. Amos, the prophet, gave direct oracles

  343. from God.

  344. And Haggai preached sermons.

  345. Zechariah employed mysterious signs. We

  346. looked at the book of Zechariah last

  347. year.

  348. And he had all these strange visions and

  349. signs.

  350. And Malachi used a lot of questioning

  351. and answering back and forth with God.

  352. What does this all show about God?

  353. That he communicated in these many ways

  354. and in many times.

  355. The fact that God spoke in these ways

  356. demonstrates that God loves to

  357. communicate with people. He loves to

  358. communicate with me and you. Imagine a

  359. father who comes home from work

  360. and he is out the door, he unlocks the

  361. door, he walks in

  362. and his children are there and they

  363. greet him and instead of

  364. extending a warm communication to them,

  365. he brushes them aside and says, "I don't

  366. want to love you through communication."

  367. And then proceeds to be on his phone or

  368. proceeds to go take a take a nap or

  369. proceeds to lock himself in his den.

  370. What kind of loving father do you have?

  371. The the loving father of God, the the

  372. fatherliness of God here shows us that

  373. he comes and he communicates. He enters

  374. into the drama of history

  375. for you and for me. He loves to

  376. communicate with us. A loving father

  377. comes home from work, of course, to

  378. greet his children with love and

  379. affection, to hold them, to ask them

  380. about their day,

  381. to ask them, "How many Pop-Tarts did you

  382. eat today?"

  383. To ask them if they obeyed Mama, to ask

  384. them what did they learn, what did they

  385. explore, what did they see? Did they

  386. bring dirt into the house? Did they

  387. clean it up after they brought the dirt

  388. into the house?

  389. The father is there, he's engaged, he

  390. loves them. He communicates in various

  391. ways through letters,

  392. through

  393. admonitions, through warnings, through

  394. encouragements, through songs,

  395. through love,

  396. through expressions

  397. that are so unique to God.

  398. Are you a loving father? Do you

  399. communicate the love of the father?

  400. Well, look here that these forms of

  401. communications were revealing more about

  402. God throughout history. The more and

  403. more God spoke, the more and more God

  404. communicated, the more and more we

  405. learned about God. God doesn't just

  406. communicate because he loves you, he

  407. wants you to love him.

  408. He communicates so that you would love

  409. him. That's why a loving father comes

  410. home from work to communicate so that

  411. his children would love him as well.

  412. And yet, and yet,

  413. as dramatic and wonderful as these forms

  414. of communication were,

  415. they were never God's

  416. final word.

  417. Isn't that amazing? They were never

  418. God's final word. In fact, he gave

  419. Israel a period of silence for nearly

  420. 400 years.

  421. He didn't say anything.

  422. Sometimes silence communicates a lot as

  423. well.

  424. In this case,

  425. the silence of God was the ramp up

  426. to the dramatic

  427. arrival

  428. of Jesus, the Son of God.

  429. Notice that number two, God speaks in

  430. these last days. So, number one, he

  431. spoke long ago. Look at the ways he

  432. spoke, but notice now that he speaks in

  433. these last days.

  434. In these last days, he has spoken to us

  435. by

  436. his son.

  437. There's a shift in history so

  438. powerful was the arrival of Christ that

  439. it split history in two epochs.

  440. The first one was

  441. the the communication to the

  442. forefathers, but this one is

  443. the communication of the Son in these

  444. last days. There's a shift in history.

  445. But there isn't just a shift in history

  446. long ago to in these last days, there's

  447. a shift in communication at many times

  448. and in many ways,

  449. but today

  450. he speaks

  451. through the single

  452. the single focal point which is his son.

  453. God is speaking.

  454. God is no longer speaking in the former

  455. ways.

  456. In other words, today he is speaking

  457. by his son.

  458. What a beautiful thing for God to do to

  459. show us in a singular fashion

  460. the Son. To say, "This is the Son. You

  461. must look to him. If you would like to

  462. be saved, look to Jesus the Son." And by

  463. the way, he can do all of those things

  464. in the past, all those communications

  465. that he had, all of those different

  466. expressions, the many times and many

  467. places, all of those all of those are

  468. pointing to this last communication that

  469. he gives through his son.

  470. God speaks through the Son to show his

  471. final revelation. Look at the fourth

  472. bullet point there.

  473. Let's look at the other books of the New

  474. Testament say about this. In John 1:18,

    John 1:18

  475. John writes that no one has ever seen

  476. God. The only God who is at the Father's

  477. side,

  478. and he has made him known.

  479. Colossians 1:1 uh verse 15, he is the

    Colossians 1:1

  480. image, Jesus is, of the invisible God,

  481. the firstborn of all creation. First

    1 John 2:23

  482. John 2:23,

  483. no one who denies the Son has the

  484. Father. Whoever confesses the Son has

  485. the Father also. They come in a pair.

  486. The Father sends the Son, the Son

  487. testifies to the Father. If you know the

  488. Son, you know the Father.

  489. What an appropriate final word then for

  490. God to speak to you and me.

  491. What a good Father

  492. that the Father is to show us the Son.

  493. God speaks through the Son to show that

  494. he is better than the Old Testament

  495. figures and system. Now, this is what

  496. the author of Hebrews is getting at. If

  497. you want to know all of those things in

  498. the Old Testament, all of those former

  499. ways that God spoke to the Father, if

  500. you want to know what they were pointing

  501. to,

  502. look no further than the Son.

  503. Jesus is better than the angels were

  504. told in Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  505. Jesus is better than Moses in chapter 3.

  506. We're told

  507. that Moses was great, but you know who's

  508. greater? Jesus.

  509. We're told in Hebrews 7 that the

  510. priesthood, the Old Testament priesthood

  511. was good. It was great.

  512. But Jesus is better than that

  513. priesthood.

  514. The old covenant was great, too.

  515. But the the new covenant, the one that

  516. Jesus oversees,

  517. that one's that one's better.

  518. We're told that the sacrifice he gives,

  519. the blood he sheds,

  520. that is better

  521. than any blood you could ever provide

  522. through a bull or a goat.

  523. We're told that the tents built by

  524. hands, the the temple, the tabernacle,

  525. you know what's better than that?

  526. The the tabernacle, the the temple that

  527. Jesus builds in heaven for you and for

  528. me.

  529. That place he prepares for us.

  530. You know the hope of the Old Testament,

  531. the hope of all of those forefathers

  532. that Hebrews 11 showcases, Abraham,

  533. Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua,

  534. David, the judges.

  535. You know what's better than the hope

  536. they had?

  537. The hope you have, which is Jesus.

  538. You have a better hope.

  539. A better heavenly place, a better city,

  540. a better sacrifice, a better covenant

  541. with Christ. You have a great high

  542. priest.

  543. He's He's greater than anything you know

  544. to be great in the Old Testament. Jesus

  545. is greater than that.

  546. Why? Why does God speak through Jesus

  547. today? Why?

  548. Why Why is he not interested in speaking

  549. in the former ways? Why is he not

  550. interested in doing ex- interested in

  551. doing extraordinary things, signs,

  552. wonders?

  553. Why isn't he interested in taking the

  554. sun and darting it across the sky and

  555. replacing with a magnificent sun

  556. brighter than the sun we currently Why

  557. is he not interested in doing that?

  558. Because Jesus is better

  559. than all those things.

  560. Jesus is better

  561. than everything.

  562. If there's a message you want to give to

  563. your children today, fathers, it is

  564. that.

  565. Jesus is better than anything.

  566. Notice then this grand theme of God the

  567. Son, verses two to four in this letter.

  568. It's interesting he starts with showing

  569. us that Jesus

  570. that God speaks through him, and the

  571. first thing he says is that Jesus is the

  572. heir of all things. Now, that's an

  573. interesting place to start.

  574. At the end. When do you inherit

  575. something?

  576. At the beginning of your life or at the

  577. end of somebody else's life and kind of

  578. in the middle of yours, right?

  579. So, when all things are done and all

  580. things are passed away, Jesus inherits

  581. everything. So, then why start with

  582. that? Why not say Jesus is creator? Why

  583. not start with the second one? He is the

  584. creator of the world. Why not start with

  585. air?

  586. Because

  587. God wants you to know where all this

  588. ends up.

  589. He's not just speaking to you today.

  590. He is

  591. showing us the end. The end is that

  592. Jesus is the heir of all things, of all

  593. creation, and of all redemption.

  594. That's why he starts

  595. with this reality that Jesus is the

  596. inheritor, the heir of all things.

  597. Colossians 1:16 says, "All things were

    Colossians 1:16

  598. created through him and for him." You,

  599. me,

  600. the stars, the planets, the earth,

  601. everything

  602. is his.

  603. Now, yes, he is the creator of the

  604. world. John 1:3 says, "All things were

    John 1:3

  605. made through him and without him was not

  606. anything made that was made."

  607. Romans 11:36 says, "For from him and

    Romans 11:36

  608. through him and to him are all things."

  609. To him be glory forever. Amen.

  610. Colossians 1:16 says this, "For by him

    Colossians 1:16

  611. all things were created in heaven and on

  612. earth, visible and invisible, whether

  613. thrones or dominions or rulers or

  614. authorities."

  615. Do you see all things were created?

  616. Everything, everything that you see,

  617. everything that you don't see,

  618. everything was created

  619. by him.

  620. He is the radiance, in the third place

  621. we see here, that he is the radiance of

  622. the glory of God. This is in the text.

  623. In verse 3, he is the radiance of the

  624. glory of God in the exact imprint of his

  625. nature.

  626. In John 12:45,

    John 12:45

  627. Jesus says something so striking.

  628. "Whoever sees me sees him who sent me."

  629. In 2 Corinthians 4:6, it says, "God, who

    2 Corinthians 4:6

  630. said, 'Let the light shine out of

  631. darkness.'" Remember at creation?

  632. Uh he has shown in our hearts to give

  633. the light of the knowledge of the glory

  634. of God in the face

  635. of Jesus Christ.

  636. It It is a mistake to confuse the word

  637. radiate with reflect. Jesus doesn't

  638. merely reflect, like a mirror reflects,

  639. your glory, your face.

  640. Jesus radiates

  641. the Father.

  642. Like the sun

  643. radiates its warmth to the earth.

  644. Doesn't just give us light. He gives us

  645. heat.

  646. Which is why we have the AC so cold in

  647. here this morning.

  648. The sun radiates

  649. the glory of heat.

  650. Jesus radiates the glory of the Father.

  651. When you look to Jesus,

  652. who is better than all these things,

  653. when you look to him,

  654. at once

  655. he peels back with the force of the

  656. radiation of the Father, he peels back

  657. the sin in your life.

  658. He He exposes you.

  659. In that sense, yes, Jesus does radiate

  660. the glory of the Father. He's holy, he

  661. is just, he is righteous, he's perfect.

  662. And that exposes you. In Hebrews 4, it

  663. says that God's word pierces down to the

  664. very bone, it divides the bone with the

  665. marrow.

  666. And all creatures are exposed. Nobody's

  667. hidden from his sight.

  668. But the sun radiates

  669. not just the holiness of God, but the

  670. warming love of God.

  671. In that moment, when

  672. when you're faced with a trial,

  673. the radiating love of God through Jesus

  674. Christ is palpable.

  675. You know that he's with you.

  676. In Hebrews 13, he says, "Jesus is the

  677. same yesterday, today, and tomorrow."

  678. Jesus will never leave you or forsake

  679. you. He will always be by your side.

  680. And because Jesus is by our side, we can

  681. feel the radiating warmth love of God.

  682. Do you feel the radiating

  683. warmth

  684. of God's love for you?

  685. Look no further than the cross.

  686. The love of God displayed for you and

  687. for me. The love of God that said, "I'm

  688. going to send my perfect son to die in

  689. the place of sinners." The death you and

  690. I deserve, he took upon himself

  691. to express to you

  692. the warmth and the love of God. The

  693. forgiveness of sins, the freedom.

  694. Wow, Jesus is the radiance of the glory

  695. of God. He radiates the beauty of God's

  696. forgiveness to us.

  697. Well, not only that, Hebrews tells us

  698. that Jesus is the exact imprint of God's

  699. nature.

  700. I love the photo that you saw earlier.

  701. If we could pull that up of David and

  702. his son.

  703. Now, after church, you can have them

  704. stand side by side and see the

  705. resemblance. But from the back, you can

  706. kind of tell that Michael is going to

  707. kind of become like his dad from the

  708. back at least.

  709. You can kind of see that. You can

  710. There's stands the posture. Good job,

  711. Michael. Nice back, straight, shoulders

  712. back.

  713. He stands with his father. You can tell

  714. that this is a father and a son.

  715. I remember when Noah was born, everybody

  716. would say that he looked like me and I

  717. would hold him in my arms at night and

  718. look in his eyes.

  719. As I'm holding him, and I would say,

  720. "Sorry, son. You look like me."

  721. There is no doubt when we walk into a

  722. room that Noah

  723. and I look the same.

  724. People can point out very quickly that

  725. we look the same.

  726. We don't necessarily just look the same.

  727. Sometimes our children carry the same

  728. habits we do.

  729. They say certain things or do certain

  730. things that you're like, that's

  731. definitely that's definitely a Nister

  732. kid.

  733. Sorry.

  734. There are other things that we see, not

  735. just image and behavior.

  736. But what about this?

  737. Christ is the exact imprint of God's

  738. nature because Christ

  739. is perfect. Everything he does,

  740. everything he says, everything he is,

  741. every journey he took, every person he

  742. saved, every person he healed is what

  743. the Father would do.

  744. To have that exact nature, to have

  745. They're not the same person. Noah and I

  746. are not the same person. Michael and

  747. David aren't the same person.

  748. But the the Son of God reflects so

  749. perfectly the Father

  750. that Jesus would say, "If you've seen

  751. me, you've seen the Father."

  752. Colossians 1:15 says, "He is the image

    Colossians 1:15

  753. of the invisible God,

  754. the firstborn of all creation."

  755. John 14,

  756. this is interesting. This is an

  757. interesting episode here in the upper

  758. discourse, in the upper room discourse.

  759. Jesus is with his disciples, that's the

  760. setting. They're They're eating. It's

  761. the Passover, the night before Jesus is

  762. um tried, and Philip, one of the

  763. disciples, says to him, "Lord,

  764. show us the Father, and it is enough for

  765. us."

  766. Jesus said to him,

  767. "Have I been with you so long and you

  768. still don't know me, Philip?

  769. Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.

  770. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?

  771. Do you not believe that I am in the

  772. Father and the Father's in me?

  773. The words that I say to you, I do not

  774. speak on my own authority, but the

  775. Father who dwells in me does his works.

  776. Believe me that I am in the Father and

  777. the Father's in me,

  778. or else believe on account of the works

  779. themselves.

  780. What was Jesus doing so tenderly with

  781. Philip here?

  782. He was bringing him along and saying,

  783. "Philip,

  784. I can't do anything more than what I've

  785. already done.

  786. I've already showed you the love of the

  787. Father."

  788. Now,

  789. we're in John 14.

  790. It's not until John 20 and 21

  791. that Jesus completes this work.

  792. Philip, if you don't believe that I and

  793. the Father are one,

  794. in a couple of chapters you're going to

  795. find out

  796. that the Father and I are one.

  797. I won't I don't want to confuse you.

  798. The Father didn't die on the cross with

  799. the Son.

  800. That didn't happen. We don't believe in

  801. something called Patripassianism,

  802. the belief that when Jesus died on the

  803. cross, so did the Father. We don't

  804. believe that they're intertwined that

  805. closely.

  806. But we do believe that when Jesus

  807. was on the cross and he died,

  808. that the love of the Father

  809. was fully displayed.

  810. And that love

  811. emanated forth, radiated forth.

  812. That same love is what's bringing many

  813. people to salvation today. If you

  814. believe that Jesus is Lord and you

  815. confess with your mouth

  816. that he is Lord, you will be saved.

  817. If you believe that he died for your

  818. sins at the cross,

  819. receive the love of the Father.

  820. No, Philip, it is not enough for you to

  821. know the Father

  822. apart from me.

  823. You must know the Father through me.

  824. Jesus is the exact imprint of God's

  825. nature. When When Jesus acts, it's the

  826. Father's act

  827. through him.

  828. Now, Jesus is also, Hebrews tells us,

  829. the one who upholds the universe by the

  830. word of his power.

  831. In Colossians 1:17, he is before all

    Colossians 1:17

  832. things and in him all things hold

  833. together.

  834. In Christ, we move and breathe and have

  835. our being. Your very existence right

  836. now, in this seat, in this century, in

  837. this month, on this day, at this time

  838. is a guarantee

  839. that Jesus

  840. holds you together. He sustains all of

  841. you by the word of his power.

  842. It's interesting that it doesn't say the

  843. power of his word.

  844. This word is a creative word.

  845. It's a creating word. It's the same word

  846. that God spoke all of existence into

  847. being.

  848. All of creation into being. This word,

  849. the word that created the heavens, the

  850. mountains, the ridges, the canyons, the

  851. caverns, the oceans, the depths, the

  852. heights, the moons, the stars, that word

  853. is what sustains you

  854. and me.

  855. And it's the word of Christ. It Isn't

  856. Jesus better?

  857. Isn't Jesus better than any word you've

  858. heard?

  859. Jesus is also, we're told, the purifier

  860. of sins.

  861. It's interesting that the word he

  862. upholds us by the word of his power is

  863. right before

  864. this reality that he is the purifier.

  865. We're told in verse 3, in the middle of

  866. there, after making purification for

  867. sins. So, he's the purifier.

  868. How did he purify our sins? He did it

  869. First John 1:7 says, "The blood of Jesus

    1 John 1:7

  870. his son cleanses us from all sin." He

  871. did it through his blood. First Peter

  872. chapter 2:24 says, "He himself bore our

  873. sins in his body on the tree that we

  874. might die to sin and live to

  875. righteousness. By his wounds you have

  876. been healed." What a great salvation,

  877. the purifier.

  878. He doesn't purify just by the word, but

  879. by the blood.

  880. What is the reward of that purification?

  881. We're told

  882. in Hebrews that after making

  883. purification, he sat for sins, he sat

  884. down at the right hand of the majesty on

  885. high.

  886. He is the one who sits at the right hand

  887. of majesty on high enthroned.

  888. Now, the author of Hebrews will unpack

  889. this using Psalm 110. In Psalm 110,

  890. which is applied to Jesus, we're told

  891. that the Lord says to my Lord,

  892. "Sit at my right hand until I make your

  893. enemies your footstool."

  894. Uh originally in the Psalm, this would

  895. have been for the king of Israel. But

  896. here,

  897. the author of Hebrews shows us that no,

  898. this is ultimately about Jesus, who God

  899. took

  900. after he gave his life on the cross and

  901. purified sinners, he took him

  902. out of the tomb, raised him up,

  903. and sat him at the right hand of

  904. majesty.

  905. Do you know

  906. that Jesus is at the right hand, seated

  907. the right hand of the majesty on high?

  908. Do you know that?

  909. Romans 8 says this. Look at this

  910. glorious truth.

  911. "Who is to condemn Christians?" Paul

  912. asks.

  913. "Christ Jesus is the one who died. More

  914. than that, who was raised, who is at the

  915. right hand of God? And what is he doing?

  916. Reigning." No.

  917. He is doing that, for sure. But Paul

  918. says this, "He is at the right hand of

  919. God, who indeed is interceding for us."

  920. You and I have a bridge to the Father

  921. through the seating of the Son by the

  922. majesty on high.

  923. The Son is praying for you and me right

  924. now.

  925. What a better intercessor.

  926. What better intercessor is that than the

  927. Lord Jesus? Yes, ask your friends to

  928. pray for you.

  929. But go to Jesus and say, "Jesus, this is

  930. my request. Go to the Father.

  931. Intercede for me."

  932. He does it. He's glad to do it.

  933. There is no better friend to pray for

  934. you than Jesus.

  935. And then finally,

  936. this is the argument that the author of

  937. Hebrews unpacks in chapter 1 and 2. The

  938. final point there in verse 4, "Having

  939. become as much superior to angels as the

  940. name he has inherited is more excellent

  941. than theirs."

  942. We're told that Jesus is the one who is

  943. superior to angels.

  944. In Philippians 2:9-10, "Therefore, God

    Philippians 2:9–10

  945. has highly exalted him and bestowed on

  946. him the name that is above every name,

  947. so that at the name of Jesus every knee

  948. should bow in heaven and on earth and

  949. under the earth."

  950. 1 Peter 3:22,

    1 Peter 3:22

  951. look how beautiful this is. Jesus has

  952. gone into heaven and is at the right

  953. hand of God. We saw that in Hebrews

  954. already. With angels, authorities, and

  955. powers having been

  956. subjected to him.

  957. Jesus is

  958. better

  959. than the angels.

  960. Isn't this foundational? Don't you need

  961. to know this?

  962. Don't you need to know that the the word

  963. that God speaks is Jesus today? There is

  964. no better word. There's no other word

  965. coming. There's nothing greater than

  966. these

  967. about Jesus. Now, let's be careful.

  968. The things that we're describing here

  969. are great and marvelous things.

  970. The author of Hebrews is not comparing

  971. Jesus to bad things and saying he's

  972. great. And it's self-explanatory why

  973. those things are horrible.

  974. He is comparing Jesus

  975. to great things.

  976. And the and the rest of this letter,

  977. he's going to unpack all sorts of Old

  978. Testament pictures that are great,

  979. marvelous, wonderful, miraculous.

  980. Jesus is greater

  981. than all of those because Jesus is the

  982. heir, he's the creator. Jesus is the

  983. radiance, the imprint of God's nature.

  984. He is the one who upholds the universe

  985. by the word of his power. He's a

  986. purifier. Jesus is at the right hand and

  987. he's better than the angels.

  988. What will help you endure

  989. when you face

  990. tiny little trials?

  991. The author of Hebrews knows

  992. that when you and I face trials

  993. that come nowhere near close to these

  994. majestic things

  995. that Jesus will be enough for you

  996. to face them.

  997. Because Jesus is better

  998. pay much closer attention to the gospel,

  999. we're told in Hebrews 2:1.

    Hebrews 2:1

1000. Because Jesus is better than all these

1001. great things, hold fast your confidence.

1002. Because Jesus is better, take care. Now,

1003. listen, as we go through this list,

1004. circle the one you need to do

1005. in light of who Jesus is.

  1006. In chapter

1007. 3:12, it says, "Take care lest you be

1008. taken in by the deceitfulness of sin."

  1009. In Hebrews 4:7,

    Hebrews 4:7

1010. because Jesus is better, do not harden

  1011. your hearts against him.

1012. Because Jesus is better, strive to enter

  1013. God's rest.

1014. Because Jesus is better than these

  1015. things, strive for peace

1016. and for the holiness without which we

1017. will not see the Lord.

1018. Because Jesus is better, offer to God

1019. acceptable worship with reverence and

1020. awe for our God is a consuming fire.

1021. Because Jesus is better, listen.

1022. Because Jesus is better, let marriage be

  1023. held in honor.

1024. And let the marriage bed be undefiled.

  1025. Why?

1026. Because Jesus is better than those

  1027. things.

1028. Because Jesus is better, keep your life

1029. free from the love of money.

1030. Why? Because he has said, "I will never

1031. leave you nor forsake you." Because

1032. Jesus is better, listen, Jesus also

1033. suffered outside the gate. Because he's

1034. better than even the suffering

  1035. of this world.

1036. Let us go to him outside the camp and

1037. bear the reproach he endured.

  1038. Because Jesus is better,

  1039. Sheridan Hills,

  1040. endure.

  1041. Let

1042. God speak to you through the Son.

  1043. Let that sustain you.

1044. Let that empower you. Let that encourage

1045. you. Let that remind you that you have a

1046. loving father who would tell you today,

  1047. Jesus is better.

  1048. Let's pray.

1049. Father in heaven, thank you for this

  1050. final word to us.

  1051. That Jesus is better.

  1052. We are hard pressed,

  1053. often tempted to drift.

1054. We're tempted to lose sight of who you

  1055. are, Lord Jesus.

1056. You're the Son of God,

1057. the purifier of our souls,
