  1. If you don't have a sermon outline,

  2. there's some guys that have come forward

  3. and they're here so that you can lift

  4. your hand and receive one. Uh we study

  5. the Bible and the life of our church and

  6. you will need it. In fact, let me use

  7. this as an opportunity while you're

  8. getting an outline to notice that the

  9. next sermon series begins next Sunday.

  10. This series will take us into the fall

  11. and I'm very excited about it. It is a

  12. uh a expository message series going

  13. through the first 11 chapters of the

  14. Bible. The God of everything. The God of

  15. everything. This is an important

  16. important um series for us because in

  17. the first chapters of the Bible, we see

  18. much of the world view that God has

  19. called us to receive him through. So

  20. this is how we come to know God. And uh

  21. Genesis 1-11 will be a great

  22. encouragement to many as we we start.

  23. But this morning, we're going to be

  24. looking at this question. What does it

  25. mean? What does it mean to serve the

  26. Lord? I recently heard about a sermon

  27. series uh entitled Old School. My

  28. daughter and her husband were here um

  29. this last week. We got to spend some

  30. time together and they go to a great

  31. church in Lynchburg, Virginia. He's a

  32. professor at Liberty University and they

  33. just go to a a Bible teaching church

  34. there and they he mentioned, "Yeah, we

  35. started a new series kind of to wrap up

  36. the summer and it's called old school."

  37. And I said, "What does that mean?" He

  38. said, "Well, it's all of these phrases

  39. that sometimes in our modern world we

  40. look at and we kind of think that's old

  41. school, like the like phrases or words."

  42. He said, uh, the first one that they did

  43. a few weeks ago was sin. What is sin? I

  44. mean, isn't that an old school word? Do

  45. we talk about sin anymore? Well, there's

  46. a lot of people who don't, but God's

  47. word talks about it and it's important.

  48. And so, how do we relate to it? How do

  49. we see do we understand what it is? He

  50. said other words like redemption,

  51. other words like justification. How

  52. about words uh that that like gospel?

  53. What is gospel? Is gospel an old word

  54. that doesn't have any use anymore?

  55. Gospel means good news. Well, I hope

  56. we're not calling the good news old

  57. school. So, uh it was just saying that

  58. we need to have a biblical theology

  59. that's based sometimes on words that

  60. we're not used to that may seem old

  61. school. Well, here's one of those words.

  62. I thought about that this morning as I

  63. was um praying over this message and I

  64. thought, well, for some people

  65. the phrase serve the Lord may seem old

  66. school. Well, let me show you just how

  67. old it is. It goes back to Joshua

    Joshua 24 chapter mention

  68. chapter 24. And it couldn't be any more

  69. relevant than we would see here on this

  70. page this morning as we come to the word

  71. of God and we look at what does it mean

  72. to serve the Lord? And this morning um

  73. have you ever noticed this before when

  74. we go to passages of scripture and I

  75. I'll just get you to think about this

  76. concept for a second. When we go to

  77. passages of scripture that we've heard a

  78. lot before, is it possible that you're

  79. able to throw your mind into to uh

  80. autopilot or whatever and you kind of

  81. don't pay attention to what it's

  82. actually saying this morning. What we're

  83. about to read is one of those passages

  84. that many of you have heard sermons on

  85. before. Some of you, you're new to this.

  86. this is all new to you and this isn't

  87. this isn't something you heard before,

  88. but this is one of the most familiar and

  89. powerful passages

  90. in the Old Testament. And so, and it's

  91. and it's a it's a watershed passage. I

  92. mean, it's it's it it's a dividing

  93. passage and it really captures

  94. really much of the message of not only

  95. the Old Testament, but listen to this.

  96. This captures much much of the message

  97. of the whole Bible.

  98. in the whole gospel. And so as we as we

  99. look at this passage, I want you to just

  100. kind of notice the monumental nature of

  101. it. In fact, um let's do the context

  102. first. So even before we read it, it

  103. makes more sense. Notice this in the

  104. first bullet point there under the

  105. context. Joshua

  106. replaces Moses. And he does that in

  107. chapter 1. Joshua replaces Moses's and

  108. leads the conquest of the promised land.

  109. The settle for seven years, the

  110. settlement of the promised land and then

  111. he governs the promised land, Israel for

  112. 14 years. So, here we are um going

  113. forward in history um after the Exodus,

  114. after the wandering in the wilderness,

  115. and then they finally make it to the

  116. promised land. Joshua takes over and

  117. this is after nearly 30 years of

  118. ministry. This is his last address to

  119. the people. So, he's been with them

  120. before they went into the promised land.

  121. He has been with them while they've been

  122. into the promised land. He's led them

  123. through their many struggles with this.

  124. And now this is his last address. Look

  125. at the next bullet point there. Israel

  126. was covenantally committed to Yahweh

  127. God. That Yahweh is the is the personal

  128. name of God. God loves you so much. He

  129. loves us so much. He shares with us his

  130. personal like like my personal name is

  131. Andrew Yhwh.

  132. Yahweh is God's personal name. And so

  133. when we refer to that here, we see they

  134. are committed to this one true God, the

  135. creator God of the universe, but they

  136. are spiritually prone. Can you underline

  137. those two words? Spiritually prone

  138. toward divided loyalties and lingering

  139. idolatry.

  140. So they they keep coming back to that.

  141. And as you read the Old Testament,

  142. you'll see that they keep struggling

  143. with their hearts being divided from

  144. God. And they keep struggling with going

  145. back to these other idols that are not

  146. God. And this is part of the reason that

  147. even in the Ten Commandments, we would

  148. see

  149. Moses, God through Moses, deliver

  150. commandment number one is what?

  151. Thou shalt have

  152. no other gods before me. That's God's

  153. first rule. No other gods before me. How

  154. important is that to God? Well, it's

  155. number one. I'm the one true God. You're

  156. not going to worship other gods. You're

  157. going to be my people and you're not

  158. going to worship other gods. So, this is

  159. something that is hard for them. This is

  160. something that they're struggling with.

  161. And just in that open space out there

  162. underneath that one, can you put today

  163. Do we not struggle with divided

  164. loyalties today?

  165. Do we not sometimes go? Now, you may not

  166. have a stone or a carved image

  167. that you have in your car or in your

  168. house that you're tempted to raise up

  169. and say, "Here's an idol that I have."

  170. But no, you may drive your idol.

  171. You may live in your idol.

  172. You may get away to your idol,

  173. but we too feel this pressure. How about

  174. number three?

  175. They were constantly tempted to serve

  176. Baal,

  177. Ishtar, Asher,

  178. Asharath,

  179. and Molech, and other gods who were

  180. pagan gods of the nations around them.

  181. And why did they worship these? Because

  182. if you didn't have rain where they live,

  183. you die. They had, you know, we don't

  184. ever think about the real necessity of

  185. rain here in South Florida. Number one,

  186. we get a lot of it usually. Not this

  187. year, but usually. But if you're up in

  188. Texas or Arkansas or Oklahoma or other

  189. places, I mean, there's Baptist churches

  190. that are meeting up there right now, um,

  191. that at different times and different

  192. years, they're sitting there and part of

  193. their service is asking God for rain

  194. because they their crops are dependent

  195. upon the dry ground farming, uh, where

  196. my in-laws are, they depend on the rain.

  197. Well, listen, there's a lot of places in

  198. the world that even right now depend

  199. upon the rain.

  200. We're kind of insulated from that.

  201. But Israel kept going back in in they

  202. would be tempted in hard times to look

  203. to the other, you know, where's our God?

  204. Well, all the other nations around us

  205. worship these gods and they're

  206. worshiping these gods for rain or

  207. fertility of their crops or fertility of

  208. their own families, being able to have

  209. children about warfare, about power.

  210. many of the same pressures that are

  211. alive in the world today.

  212. So, what is Joshua's message that we're

  213. about to read? Here's his message. You

  214. cannot have Yahweh plus the gods of

  215. Egypt, Mesopotamia, or Canaan

  216. or I could say Bickl Avenue

  217. or Hollywood.

  218. Decide whom you belong to is what Joshua

  219. is saying. He's saying, "Serve the Lord

  220. sincerely,

  221. exclusively,

  222. and wholeheartedly." So, he's about to

  223. die and this is his message. Let's read

  224. the in the top of the page there. 24:15.

  225. This is the box. Look at what it says.

  226. And just notice the watershed moment.

  227. And not only for their lives, but for

  228. ours as well. Look what it says. And if

  229. it is evil in your eyes to serve the

  230. Lord. So, he's almost being cynical or

  231. sarcastic. So if it's evil in your eyes

  232. to serve the Lord, choose this day whom

  233. you will serve. He's saying, make up

  234. your mind

  235. whether the gods your father served in

  236. the region beyond the river, but before

  237. they came into the promised land or the

  238. gods of the Amorites in whose land you

  239. dwell. So they they've come in there and

  240. there's there's peoples that were there

  241. in the land that worshiped other gods.

  242. Are you going to worship the old gods

  243. beyond the river? Are you going to

  244. worship the new gods that are here that

  245. you're seeing now? Read it out loud with

  246. me. The very end. Let's read it

  247. carefully. Read it strong. But as for me

  248. and my house, we will serve the Lord.

  249. This phrase, serve the Lord.

  250. What does it mean to serve the Lord?

  251. Well, this morning we want to dive into

  252. that a little bit. Well, one of the

  253. questions that we can ask ourselves is

  254. down there in the middle of the page.

  255. What does it mean to serve a god? Any

  256. god. What does it mean to serve a god?

  257. Well, first of all, we would maybe think

  258. about this that you would revere this

  259. god. You would respect it in some way.

  260. Maybe you would worship it as as so to

  261. speak, but you would revere this god.

  262. You would it would hold value to you.

  263. How about this? That you would pursue

  264. this god. It would be important enough

  265. that you pursue it in your life.

  266. you would sacrifice for this God.

  267. >> A huge part of worship all around the

  268. world of many different religions has to

  269. do with sacrifice.

  270. And it is amazing how um pervasive that

  271. concept is as we look at it especially

  272. when we think about the true sacrifice

  273. not of a human um among ourselves but

  274. one from God

  275. himself

  276. which separates Christianity from all

  277. other world religions.

  278. But it's the idea of sacrifice. How

  279. about this one? you depend on this God.

  280. That's what the nation of Israel was

  281. doing. They were looking on on who can

  282. we depend on who can we depend for rain,

  283. for the crops, for favor, for power, for

  284. strength over enemies. On who can we

  285. depend.

  286. When you serve a god, you give yourself

  287. to this God

  288. and you spend you expend

  289. your time, your energy, and your

  290. resources

  291. on it. And so we can begin to see that

  292. it's not just about doing something, a

  293. little dabble do you thing, a little

  294. thing here or a little thing there. This

  295. is when you serve a god. The picture is

  296. is that you worship. Now, what's

  297. interesting about the human heart is the

  298. human heart is made to worship. It is

  299. down within our DNA to worship. We're

  300. going to worship something.

  301. The question is, what are you going to

  302. worship right now? This morning, you're

  303. going to worship something with your

  304. life. And you can sit here in this

  305. church Sunday after Sunday after Sunday

  306. and ultimately not worship Yahweh God.

  307. You can be a member of this church and

  308. in your own heart of hearts you can

  309. worship other gods

  310. instead of this God. And so we need to

  311. be very careful that we see Joshua's

  312. challenge to them to be a very real

  313. challenge and it's a challenge that is

  314. timeless. It's through the ages

  315. that we see this challenge being applied

  316. even to our own lives. Notice this.

  317. Christians are called to serve the Lord.

  318. And the Lord has to do with the the Lord

  319. of Israel. This was Yahweh God, the king

  320. that has created the world. What does it

  321. mean to serve the Lord? Number one,

  322. serving the Lord begins by recognizing

  323. Jesus as Lord. This is where it begins.

  324. And this is we've seen throughout both

  325. Old Testament and New Testament is that

  326. there is a Messiah that is promised and

  327. God is saying and he's re progressively

  328. revealing his salvation plan that he is

  329. going to come and a Messiah is going to

  330. come through this. they we didn't

  331. realize it was really going to be him

  332. him in bodily form. We weren't sure what

  333. the what exactly it was looking for. It

  334. was a it was a mystery still to the Old

  335. Testament believers, but eventually it

  336. became clear and Jesus came showing that

  337. he was the Messiah. He came revealing

  338. that he was God. He came working

  339. wonders, saying, "Do you wonder who I

  340. am? Look, look, look." He's he's doing

  341. things to show it. And then he's

  342. speaking and he's showing this. And then

  343. we see that he lays down his life

  344. as the savior of the world, as the

  345. messiah of the world, and he is raised

  346. again by the power of God. This is

  347. recognizing him. He was raised to the

  348. glory of the father as Lord. Notice

  349. this. Jesus is Lord. I am not Lord.

  350. And neither is anyone or anything else.

  351. And remember this, the New Testament

  352. concept or context was in this time when

  353. the New Testament was being written,

  354. Caesar was Lord over the Roman Empire.

  355. And Caesar is being Lord over the Roman

  356. Empire, you were called to recognize

  357. Caesar as Lord. And if you would not

  358. confess Caesar as Lord, you could be put

  359. to death. You could be banished. You

  360. could be um your citizenship could be

  361. removed. There was a there was a wide

  362. variety of things that they would do.

  363. But when we see the gospel taking off

  364. within the Roman Empire, we see that the

  365. challenge is, oh no, Caesar is not Lord.

  366. Jesus is Lord.

  367. >> Amen. This is the one who is Lord. And

  368. so I want us to recognize this morning

  369. that we are in a similar way. What is

  370. the question? What is our context?

  371. Who or what is your Lord?

  372. Who is the Lord over your life? You see,

  373. this idea of serving the Lord is not

  374. just about doing something for God.

  375. That's that's what Satan would love to

  376. keep it as. Satan would love for you to

  377. think, well, you're going to serve the

  378. Lord, so you're going to go on a mission

  379. trip and build a church, or you're going

  380. to go build habitat for humanity, or

  381. you're going to go do something. You're

  382. going to provide clean water to people

  383. without clean water. Is it good to

  384. provide clean water with people that

  385. don't have clean water? Yes, that's very

  386. good. I was just with a bunch of

  387. missionaries in Prog. They were talking

  388. about the fact that there was there's

  389. hundreds of thousands of people in

  390. Somalia and Sudan where the water is

  391. over 900 ft below the surface and they

  392. just can't drill enough wells.

  393. It's way too far and it's very very

  394. difficult. So, they're looking at other

  395. ways to help protect water supplies that

  396. are there. teaching hygiene, teaching

  397. all kinds of other things. So, is it

  398. good to go and to help with those

  399. things? Yes, that is a that is a

  400. wonderful thing. But one of the one of

  401. the mentalities that we often have is do

  402. something for God and this will open

  403. heaven to you.

  404. But what we see very differently in all

  405. of scripture is a comprehensive

  406. aspect of your life that it is for him.

  407. Um, one of the teachers shared with me

  408. that um, I believe last um, Friday that

  409. TJ Chipman um, uh, or one of the days

  410. this week TJ Chipman led a Bible study

  411. and he was saying, "Why do we do all of

  412. this? What is this all about? Everything

  413. that we do here, everything that we do

  414. in this ministry is for God.

  415. And we come to see that our whole lives

  416. are to be lived for God in all that we

  417. do. Whether we eat or whether we drink,

  418. whether we sleep, whether we work,

  419. everything that we do, who is your Lord?

  420. That's a very legitimate question

  421. because our Lord can be a lot of

  422. different things in our present life.

  423. What do we bow down to? What do we what

  424. do we fear?

  425. You see, you can either fear the things

  426. of the world and pay homage to the

  427. things of the world, pursue the things

  428. of the world, sacrifice for the things

  429. of the world.

  430. um or we can look to the creator of the

  431. universe that we are called to serve. So

  432. number one serving the Lord by begins by

  433. recognizing Jesus as Lord. In fact

  434. notice this Philippians 2:es 9- 11 is

  435. very very clear on this. Look what it

  436. says. Therefore God has highly exalted

  437. him speaking of Jesus and bestowed upon

  438. him the name that is above every name.

  439. Verse 10. So at the name of Jesus, every

  440. knee should bow in heaven and on earth

  441. and under the earth. That means

  442. everybody who's ever lived.

  443. Verse 11, and every tongue confess that

  444. Jesus Christ is Lord. Look at this. To

  445. the glory of God the Father. You see,

  446. eventually every tongue is going to say

  447. that.

  448. The great opportunity is for you to say

  449. it now before it is everlastingly

  450. too late.

  451. And so Ephesians or Philippians chapter

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  452. 2 recognizes that Jesus it is a very

  453. very basic and comprehensive reality

  454. that Jesus Christ is the Lord of all

  455. creation. And there's several passages

  456. that you can look up there this week and

  457. uh just kind of ruminate over those.

  458. Think about those. Let th let those sink

  459. into your mind. Struggle with them.

  460. Allow them to help you. Notice this that

  461. recognizing Jesus as Lord means

  462. submission to Jesus. Submission to him.

  463. You see, you're not the Lord. And you

  464. are called to live in submission to him.

  465. Lord indicates a king over a subject.

  466. And so he is Lord. We are subjects. If

  467. Jesus is not Lord of all, then it's

  468. often been said Jesus is not Lord at

  469. all.

  470. So you need to think about that for your

  471. life. Is he do you think in your mind

  472. that he's Lord of some areas of your

  473. life but not all areas of your life?

  474. Now, this was a very real possibility

  475. because it's not that the nation of

  476. Israel, listen to this, when Joshua was

  477. dealing with them. It's not that they

  478. said, "We have nothing to do with Yahweh

  479. God." What the struggle was is that they

  480. were claiming Yahweh God because they

  481. knew what had happened with Egypt and

  482. getting out of Egypt. But then as they

  483. came into the promised land and they saw

  484. and heard about these other gods and as

  485. pressure would come on their life then

  486. they would say well what about these

  487. others too?

  488. So it's not that they said no to Yahweh

  489. God. It's that they were saying yeah we

  490. have Yahweh God but we also are looking

  491. to Moch

  492. and to others.

  493. And God said you shall have no other

  494. gods

  495. before me.

  496. Notice this as well that as we as we see

  497. this concept of divided heart, it flows

  498. over into the New Testament. Jesus dealt

  499. with it in Matthew chapter 6. Jesus

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  500. said, "You cannot have two masters.

  501. You can't serve God and you can't serve

  502. the things of this world."

  503. You, no man can serve two masters.

  504. Either you're going to come to love the

  505. one and hate the other or hate the one

  506. and love the other. You you cannot serve

  507. God and the things of this world.

  508. So same concept in the New Testament

  509. era, same thing for us today. We too can

  510. be tempted to say, "Oh yes, Jesus is

  511. Lord of my life and this," but when it

  512. comes to this relationship or this

  513. desire or this aspect that I'm concerned

  514. about or this this hope that I have, we

  515. suddenly let somebody else be Lord

  516. over those things. And Jesus is saying,

  517. "No,

  518. I'm called to be Lord of all." Pastor

  519. Billingsley used to preach a beautiful

  520. sermon. Um he preached it usually about

  521. once a year I think and it was the

  522. description of a house

  523. and he masterfully

  524. walked through the rooms of the house

  525. telling about how Jesus had come to walk

  526. with him in the house and the idea was

  527. this. It was an imagery of of Jesus

  528. saying I I'm called to be Lord of your

  529. front door.

  530. Yes Lord come in. You're welcome here.

  531. I'm called to be Lord of your living

  532. room. Yes, Lord. Come and sit with me at

  533. the couch. Let's meet here on a regular

  534. basis. You can be the Lord of my living

  535. room. And well, I'm called to be Lord of

  536. your television.

  537. Okay, Lord, you have the remote.

  538. You control what's on the television.

  539. Okay. Well, I'm called to be Lord of

  540. your kitchen. I'm called to be Lord of

  541. these other things. I'm called to be

  542. Lord of the rooms of the house. what's

  543. in the house. I'm called to be lord of

  544. your office and the things that are in

  545. your office. I'm called to be lord. Now,

  546. this is before the days of computers,

  547. personal computers. So, he would preach,

  548. I would add to it. I'm called to be

  549. Jesus would be saying, I'm called to be

  550. lord of your computer. Okay, Lord, you

  551. have the passwords.

  552. But there was one room in the house

  553. that had a closet to it

  554. and it was locked. And the Lord went to

  555. open that closet door

  556. and he said, "No, no, Lord. That this

  557. room isn't for you.

  558. You You wouldn't like what's in this

  559. room. You wouldn't approve of that. No

  560. Lord, not that door.

  561. And he said, "The Lord let go of the

  562. handle

  563. and with sadness

  564. headed for the front door.

  565. Lord, where are you going?

  566. Why are you leaving?"

  567. No, Lord. You can have all of this, just

  568. not that.

  569. You You can have all of it, Lord, but

  570. just don't ask for that.

  571. And the Lord would look to him and say,

  572. "Bill, if I'm not Lord

  573. of all, I'm not Lord at all."

  574. Friends, we need to evaluate our lives.

  575. Is he Lord of all? Does he have access

  576. to every room of our heart in our mind,

  577. every affection that we have? Or do we

  578. have pet sins

  579. or listen to this pet fears

  580. that we will not give to him?

  581. No man can serve two masters.

  582. He is to be Lord. So this means the last

  583. point here is that recognizing Jesus as

  584. Lord means repentance

  585. or turning from sin. That's what it

  586. means. It means that we leave the sin

  587. that so easily entangles us. In fact,

  588. look at 1 Thessalonians 1:9. Paul is

    1 Thessalonians 1:9

  589. rejoicing over the Thessalonians true

  590. faith and their repentance. Look what it

  591. says. He says, "You turned to God?" From

  592. what? From idols to serve the living and

  593. true God. Don't turn the page over. Just

  594. let that sink in. Look at that phrase.

  595. Look at that. Look at that verse. Look

  596. what he's saying. You turned away from

  597. the gods, from the other idols.

  598. And he says to serve the living and true

  599. God. You see, the implication here is

  600. the other idols are dead gods and

  601. they're false gods.

  602. They're not true.

  603. They're not real. So, some of you here

  604. today, maybe maybe this is all new to

  605. you and and you're hearing us call you

  606. to come and to look to God and to serve

  607. the one true God and to lay down all of

  608. the other idols in your life, to lay

  609. down the darkness,

  610. to lay down the things that are holding

  611. you back from walking freely in

  612. fellowship with Christ. I would say to

  613. you, that's what he is good for. He is

  614. good to help you with that. He is good

  615. to take those things and take the burden

  616. of them away.

  617. He can do that

  618. >> if you will give them to him. Okay, you

  619. can safely flip the page. Let's look

  620. very quickly. Number two, it's not only

  621. about coming and recognizing him as

  622. Lord. But it's also number two, serving

  623. the Lord continues through following

  624. Jesus as shepherd. following Jesus as

  625. shepherd. And we see this a lot in the

  626. New Testament and we even see it in the

  627. Old Testament. The people were to follow

  628. God. God would be a light leading them

  629. in the darkness. He would be a a pillar

  630. of fire leading them during the day. It

  631. was about sheep being led. And then

  632. Jesus comes up in bodily form and he

  633. repeatedly says, "Follow me.

  634. Follow me." And he says it in a lot of

  635. different ways and a lot of different

  636. circumstances. And there, you know,

  637. there's some people that say, "Well, I

  638. want Jesus, but I want to go my own

  639. way."

  640. And Jesus is saying, "No,

  641. if you're going to be with me, I call

  642. you to follow me." And think about Psalm

  643. 23, the most quoted passage of the Old

  644. Testament. In fact, look what it says.

  645. The Lord is my what?

  646. >> My shepherd. I shall not want. What that

  647. means is I'm not going to lack anything.

  648. >> He makes me to lie down in green

  649. pastures. He leads me beside quiet

  650. waters. He restores my soul.

  651. He leads me in the paths of

  652. righteousness

  653. for his name's sake. This means God is

  654. not going you're not going to miss out

  655. on anything when you're following Jesus.

  656. >> The lie is that you're going to miss out

  657. on something. You're going to miss fun

  658. or you're going to miss fulfillment or

  659. you're going to miss a relationship.

  660. You're going to miss something that

  661. would be good for you. What what God's

  662. word says over and over and over again

  663. is come just depend upon me. You're not

  664. going to miss anything.

  665. >> Amen.

  666. >> I love Psalm 34:8. It says, "Lions

    Psalms 34:8

  667. suffer want. Young lions get hungry, but

  668. those who seek the Lord lack no good

  669. thing.

  670. You're never going to miss out on

  671. anything

  672. when you are following Jesus."

  673. Man, is there something in your life

  674. this morning that you need to say,

  675. "Lord, I've not been following you

  676. on this and I need to follow you on

  677. this."

  678. I would just even as we're talking, just

  679. confess that to him. Say, "Lord," you

  680. know, if he's putting his finger on

  681. something in your life, don't hold on to

  682. it. Let it go and say, "Lord, by your

  683. grace, by your power, by your spirit,

  684. even right now, I I give this to you.

  685. Savior, lead me."

  686. He will do it.

  687. Number three,

  688. serving the Lord continues through

  689. learning from Jesus as teacher.

  690. Learning from Jesus as teacher. Put

  691. above the word teacher. You You wrote in

  692. teacher. put above that rabbi because

  693. he's called that over and over and over

  694. again. He's the teacher. You see, he has

  695. knowledge that we need to learn. He came

  696. teaching because there's a lot we don't

  697. know. Now, listen to this and be careful

  698. to listen to this. A fool doesn't want

  699. to learn.

  700. A fool has no interest in learning.

  701. Listen to this. A fool already thinks he

  702. knows.

  703. When my kids were teenagers, Marcy and I

  704. just decided,

  705. there were there were two words that

  706. they were not allowed to put together.

  707. And those two words that we didn't allow

  708. them put to put together was I know.

  709. We just said, "You want to say it

  710. another way? We'll we'll entertain that.

  711. You can maybe say it another way, but

  712. you can't say I know." When we go to

  713. tell you something, you can't say, "I

  714. know."

  715. Because there's there's aspects of this

  716. where you kind of know but you really

  717. don't.

  718. And that's sophomoric immaturity that's

  719. growing up. You know, eventually they

  720. come to realize it's amazing. Eventually

  721. they start calling and saying, "Hey,

  722. what'd you do about this? How did you

  723. handle that? What what did you say about

  724. this? I remember you said you me," you

  725. know, and something changes and that's

  726. good. But we need to stay in that mode

  727. of learner.

  728. Because notice this, the word disciple

  729. literally means learner. That's what it

  730. means. It's someone who learns.

  731. John 13:13 Jesus said, "You call me

    John 13:13

  732. teacher." This is an interesting verse.

  733. You call me teacher and lord. You are

  734. right. For so I am. Isn't that cool?

  735. We've already been talking about the

  736. fact that he's Lord and now we see, oh,

  737. he's Lord and teacher.

  738. John 8:31 says this, it Jesus said, if

    John 8:31

  739. you abide in my word, you see this is

  740. his teaching,

  741. his truth. If you abide in my word, then

  742. you are what?

  743. >> Truly my

  744. >> truly my disciples. So if you want to

  745. know whether or not you're a Christian,

  746. part of the question is, do you abide in

  747. his word? Do you know his word? Are you

  748. reading his word? Are you growing in his

  749. word? Is this word does this mean

  750. something to you? Does it mean something

  751. to you on a daily basis? Does it mean

  752. something to you that you are that

  753. you're coming to know what he has said

  754. and you're seeking to listen to his

  755. words of life? Now, if you have no

  756. interest in this book and you're glad to

  757. live apart from this book, well, this

  758. would make pretty clear you don't know

  759. him.

  760. And oh, how I pray that you would

  761. receive his grace to recognize he wants

  762. you to know him and he's he's given us.

  763. This is why we devote a good amount of

  764. time on Sunday mornings every single

  765. week. And we would say this is this is

  766. really the most important part of what

  767. we do is that we seek to hear from God

  768. through his word.

  769. If you abide in my word, you are truly

  770. my disciples. Number four, serving the

  771. Lord continues through serving Jesus as

  772. master. Now, this is getting close to

  773. our main phrase, serve the Lord. What

  774. does it mean to serve the Lord? Well,

  775. the scripture is crystal clear on this.

  776. As Jesus took the form of a slave,

  777. so do we as well.

  778. And not just the word servant. In fact,

  779. there's been translations of the Bible

  780. that for a long time have dumbed down

  781. the Greek word dulos

  782. or dulos.

  783. A dulos is not merely a servant like a

  784. servant that may be paid or a servant

  785. that may be no a dulos is an is a slave.

  786. It's one who is owned.

  787. And the greatest beautiful picture that

  788. you can see in this about Christ is is

  789. that Christ is the master and we are the

  790. slaves. And what's amazing about this is

  791. that he himself called himself and acted

  792. like in every way

  793. a slave.

  794. This is the humility of Christ and the

  795. obedience of Christ to the father.

  796. Notice with me Philippians chapter 2 and

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  797. verse 7. Have this mind among

  798. yourselves, which is yours in Christ

  799. Jesus, who though he was in the form of

  800. God, this was when he was in heaven, did

  801. not count equality with God a thing to

  802. be grasped or held on to. Verse 7, but

  803. he emptied himself by taking the form of

  804. a servant. Right above that, slave, same

  805. word.

  806. He took on the form of a slave being

  807. born in the likeness of men. That was in

  808. Bethlehem. That's what we celebrate at

  809. Christmas. That this baby is born. This

  810. is God in the flesh taking on the

  811. humility of a baby born and laid in a in

  812. a feeding trough.

  813. Verse eight, and being found in human

  814. form, he humbled himself even further.

  815. You could say he humbled himself by

  816. becoming obedient.

  817. That's what a slave is, is obedient.

  818. Obedient to the point of what?

  819. death. And then going even further, even

  820. death on a cross. Why? Because that was

  821. the most humiliating,

  822. torturous

  823. way to die of condemnation in the world

  824. at that time. The the picture was when

  825. the Romans wanted to say rejected and

  826. subjugated, they crucified people, held

  827. them up for people to see for hours or

  828. days.

  829. That's the way they subjugated the

  830. world. Deuteronomy says, "All who are

  831. hanged on a tree are accursed of God."

  832. Jesus took on the curse of God and the

  833. curse of man for you.

  834. He served us.

  835. The master served the slaves.

  836. We could even go to the night before the

  837. Lord's supper. What did he do on that

  838. night before the Lord's supper? He took

  839. a towel and he took a wash basin and he

  840. washed the disciples feet. The lowest

  841. job in the of any servant in the house

  842. was the guy who had to wash all the

  843. guests feet. And Jesus said, "Let me

  844. show you what my love looks like."

  845. And he washed their feet.

  846. We are called to be servants.

  847. It's funny at Starting Point, we

  848. occasionally have had people come and

  849. they're kind of interested in joining

  850. the church. And at Starting Point, we

  851. talk, as we did this morning, we talk

  852. about the fact that we have big members

  853. meetings four times a year. And we

  854. invite the people at Starting Point to

  855. come and to help with the serving of

  856. that meal. We invite you to come early.

  857. we invite you to serve and um

  858. to serve the body of Christ to be there

  859. to welcome church members as they come

  860. in.

  861. And part of the reason we do that is so

  862. that you can from the beginning

  863. understand what this church is about

  864. that we we want to serve.

  865. And we've had some people we've had men

  866. and we've had women say, "I will not do

  867. that."

  868. That's I'm just not interested in that.

  869. And some we never see again.

  870. We've had some that say, "You want me to

  871. do what?

  872. Come early and serve all these people. I

  873. thought I thought you guys are serving

  874. me because you want me to be a member of

  875. the church." No, no, no.

  876. We're we're inviting you to see a true

  877. picture of the body of Christ

  878. and what we're all called to. And

  879. there's been some people that looked at

  880. that with a weird eye and kind of just

  881. like, "Y'all are crazy." And then

  882. they kind of go, "Oh, [groaning]

  883. I think I get it now."

  884. Because they were coming from other

  885. churches where maybe that was never

  886. asked of them.

  887. That was never that maybe they they

  888. never saw that we really mean it.

  889. one of the segments of our section. I'll

  890. give it away early. We have a section

  891. called in in service of of starting

  892. point and I I just call it from from

  893. teaching to toilets.

  894. I I'm called to serve.

  895. I'm called to do toilets around here,

  896. too.

  897. Now, I love to teach the Bible, but if I

  898. come up on a toilet needs to be cleaned,

  899. I need to be willing to do that. If I

  900. come up on a church member that's

  901. struggling, I need to be willing to to

  902. look in and and and help. We we are all

  903. called to be servants.

  904. This is the way of our master.

  905. You see, the apostles to fill this in.

  906. The apostles called themselves

  907. servants or slaves of Christ. Look at

  908. Romans 1:1, Philippians 1:1, James 1:1,

    Romans 1:1 Philippians 1:1 James 1:1

  909. 2 Peter, Jame, 2 Peter 1:1.

    2 Peter 1:1

  910. When they named themselves, they said,

  911. "I'm a slave.

  912. I'm a slave of Christ."

  913. Because they were following in Jesus's

  914. footsteps.

  915. Look at our Lord's experience and his

  916. example. So, it wasn't just an example,

  917. but it was also his experience. This is

  918. what he did. He became a man. That's

  919. huge.

  920. In fact, Philippian or Isaiah 53 calls

  921. him the suffering servant.

  922. He became a man. He was born. He grew.

  923. He lived. He died in humility.

  924. He cared for people. He spent his life

  925. caring for people. He taught. He walked.

  926. He fed. He healed. He fed. He delivered

  927. them. And he waited

  928. on God's timing.

  929. Well, he also bore our burden of sin.

  930. He was mocked. He was cursed. He was

  931. rejected. He was condemned. He was

  932. tortured. And he was murdered

  933. so that he might bear the burden of our

  934. sin.

  935. And so we see from his experience and

  936. his his example that our servantthood

  937. must reflect his servantthood.

  938. He's called us to be like him.

  939. Now I'm not saying you got to run out

  940. here and ask somebody to crucify you on

  941. the crosses out here on Sheran Street to

  942. be like Jesus. But I'm saying in

  943. attitude and in action, we are called to

  944. live like him.

  945. Matthew 16

  946. indicates this. Our servantthood must

  947. reflect his servantthood.

  948. Look at Matthew 16:24. Then Jesus told

    Matthew 16:24

  949. his disciples, if anyone would come

  950. after me, that means to follow him. If

  951. anyone would come after me, let him

  952. what? deny

  953. >> deny himself

  954. and take up his cross and follow me.

  955. Take up the place of surrender. Take up

  956. the place of death

  957. and follow me as Jesus did.

  958. So, some of you are thinking, "I'm not

  959. sure I'm real interested in this

  960. Christianity thing." I get it. I

  961. understand. I pray that the Holy Spirit

  962. does a work in your heart and helps you

  963. to see that it's totally worth it.

  964. I mean, this is the greatest gift. Yes,

  965. with strings attached,

  966. but they're good strings.

  967. They're not bad strings.

  968. How about this? Number five.

  969. Serving the Lord means serving his

  970. people. Okay, that's too far.

  971. I'll serve the Lord, but I don't know if

  972. I want to serve his people.

  973. Oh, no. Jesus calls us to serve. You

  974. see, notice this. Jesus insepar

  975. inseparably connects love for him with

  976. service to others. That's what he does.

  977. In John 21, Jesus said,"Simon, do you

  978. love me?

  979. Then tend my sheep.

  980. Tend my sheep." What does that mean?

  981. That means you care for them. You feed

  982. them. You sacrifice yourself for them.

  983. You go out of your way. You protect

  984. them. You You serve my sheep even when

  985. the sheep want to go the wrong way. Even

  986. when the sheep are sick, even when the

  987. sheep keep doing dumb things, you just

  988. keep tending the flock.

  989. That's serving others. How about 1 Peter

    1 Peter 4:10

  990. 4:10? As each has received a gift, use

  991. it, read it out loud, use it to serve

  992. one another. As good stewards of God's

  993. varied grace, we are called to serve one

  994. another.

  995. Well, we are called lastly to serve the

  996. Lord with

  997. the right attitude.

  998. And this is really, really important to

  999. God. We see it throughout the Bible.

1000. Attitude means a lot. I mean, we see

1001. this. God loves a cheerful giver. You

1002. remember that? It's not just that you

1003. would give, but you would give

  1004. cheerfully.

1005. How about this? Notice Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 10:12

1006. 10:12. Serve the Lord with all your

1007. heart and with all of your soul

1008. because he gave all of his heart and all

1009. of his soul for you. Serve the Lord that

1010. way. Look at Joshua 24:14. Fear the Lord

    Joshua 24:14

1011. and serve him in what? Sincerity and in

  1012. faithfulness.

1013. Be real in your service to the Lord

1014. at your home, at your job, at Sheridan

1015. Hills Christian School, at church, at

1016. your family reunion, on vacation,

1017. at the hospital. In all that we do, we

1018. serve the Lord with sincerity and

1019. faithfulness. Look at Romans 12:11. Do

    Romans 12:11

  1020. not be slothful

1021. in zeal. Be fervent in spirit. What does

1022. it say? Serve the Lord.

1023. You know, it says, don't be slothful in

1024. zeal. Because it is possible for us to

1025. be slothful in zeal. And some of you

1026. right now, you may need to recognize

1027. that you have been a couch potato when

1028. it comes to serving the Lord.

  1029. You've been slothful.

  1030. You've not served

  1031. him.

  1032. You've not served others.

1033. Don't be offended. Just be repentant and

1034. get with the program. That's what he

  1035. invites you to do.

1036. Don't be slothful in zeal. Fervent. Be

1037. fervent in spirit. Serve the Lord.

1038. Hebrews 12:28. Let us offer to God

    Hebrews 12:28

1039. acceptable service with what? Reverence

1040. and awe. May we be amazed.

  1041. 1 Corinthians 15:58, the great passage

    1 Corinthians 15:58

1042. on the resurrection. Notice what it

  1043. says. Be steadfast,

  1044. immovable,

1045. always abounding in the work of the

1046. Lord. That's serving the Lord. Work of

1047. the Lord. Knowing that in the Lord your

  1048. labor is what?

  1049. >> Not in vain.

1050. >> It he the Lord never misses a payday.

1051. >> And sure, the grand payday is after your

1052. eyes closed for the last time. That's

1053. when it's really all worth it. But even

1054. in this life, he rewards those who seek

  1055. him,

1056. >> those who serve him. And so we're

1057. commanded, be steadfast, be immovable.

1058. That means don't go out after other

1059. gods. When the times get hard, don't be

  1060. looking for other solutions.

  1061. Stay with the Lord

1062. and have the that last line. Have the

1063. put out there to the side the confidence

  1064. in God

1065. knowing that the Lord that in the Lord

1066. your labor is not in vain. Have

  1067. confidence [snorts]

1068. in him. And then the last one is our

1069. theme verse for all of our I serve

1070. meetings and our I serve projects. Look

1071. what it says there. Serve the Lord with

  1072. what?

  1073. >> Gladness. gladness.

1074. That is the attitude with which we serve

  1075. the Lord. Amen.

1076. >> Mark chapter 10 verse 45 is the passage

    Mark 10:45

1077. that I've chosen to wrap this up. And I

1078. want you to see what it says. The gospel

1079. writer writes this. For even the Son of

1080. Man came not to be served,

1081. but to serve and to give his life as a

  1082. ransom for many.

1083. I invite you to fold over your paper.

1084. Put that away. And then when you get

1085. done with that, just look right up here.

  1086. This morning,

1087. we have been challenged to evaluate

1088. whether we serve the Lord.

1089. Which gods do you serve?

1090. Are you like the Israelites or like

1091. Jesus warned about that you would say,

1092. "Well, I love the Lord,

1093. but I love some other things, too.

1094. I serve the Lord, but I serve some other

1095. things, too." If the Holy Spirit has

1096. laid on your heart things in your life

1097. this morning that you know that you need

1098. to surrender to him now is a great time

1099. and say, "Lord, I I want to give this to

  1100. you."

1101. Maybe you're seeing that the Christian

1102. call, the Christian life is an active

1103. life. It's an active life of service.

1104. I've I've noticed a trend in my in my

  1105. life and it's this.

1106. Really joyful Christians are actively

  1107. serving Christ and others.

1108. People who are not serving Christ and

1109. others tend to be miserable Christians.

  1110. They're unhappy

  1111. >> and they're constantly struggling with

  1112. cycles of sin.

1113. Do you struggle with cycles of sin?

1114. Anger, porn, you know, whatever it is,

1115. grud, you know, things from the past. Do

1116. do you anger with Do you struggle with

1117. unforgiveness? Do you struggle with

1118. going out after worldly things? Listen,

  1119. I want to challenge you that there's a

1120. few things that you need, but one of

1121. those things is to be actively getting

1122. your eyes off of yourself and onto

  1123. Christ and onto others.

1124. Serving others, God will give victory.

1125. This morning, we've looked at what does

1126. it mean to serve the Lord. And I want to

1127. ask you to spend a few moments as our

1128. men come to prepare the elements. I want

1129. to ask you to sit quietly where you are

1130. in prayer and to consider number one,

1131. have I recognized the Lord as Lord?

  1132. Number two,

1133. am I following him as one of his sheep?

  1134. Is he my teacher?

1135. Am I learning to serve as he served? Um,

1136. I just invite you to spend time with the

1137. Lord. The Bible tells us that this table

1138. is only for Christians who have

1139. surrendered their lives to Christ. If

1140. you're not a Christian, this table is

1141. not for you. We would encourage you to

1142. watch and maybe pray, but we would

1143. encourage you to be very still. The

1144. second thing that we would say is is

1145. that this table rem reminds Christians

1146. the price that was paid for them.

1147. So that when we go to sin, we remember

1148. that the King of Kings and the Lord of

1149. Lords laid down his life for us. And so

1150. allow that to wash over you this

1151. morning. I would invite you to just turn

1152. from your sin, confess that to the Lord,

1153. give thanks in our prayer time for what

1154. he has done for us. So uh would you bow

1155. your head and uh we're going to be still

1156. for a little bit. The piano is going to

1157. play and I just invite you to be still

  1158. before the Lord.

  1159. Lord Jesus.

1160. You have told us to observe this table

1161. to remember the price that was paid for

  1162. our sin, [music]

  1163. for our very lives.

1164. The sinless son of God

1165. came and laid down his life so that we

  1166. might live

1167. the one and only true hope.

1168. Lord, I thank you this morning for the

  1169. gospel

1170. and I thank you this morning that you

1171. did in perfect obedience to the father

1172. lay down your life so that we might

  1173. live.

1174. I pray Lord that this observance of this

  1175. table

  1176. would help us [snorts]

  1177. in our hope.

1178. It would help us in our holiness.

  1179. it would help us

  1180. in our obedience

1181. to observe all that you have commanded

  1182. us.

1183. Lord, I pray that we would be

1184. stronger followers of Jesus because of

1185. this table this morning. I pray that

1186. there would be sins that we refuse

1187. in the days ahead because we have

  1188. remembered that Christ died

1189. in love for us so that we would love you

  1190. back

  1191. as we should.

1192. So Lord, we give this time to you and we

  1193. thank you for it.

  1194. Gentlemen, would you
