  1. Amen. You may be seated. We uh just have

  2. sung a theme of what we covered in

  3. starting point. Uh some men are coming

  4. forward right now to hand out an

  5. outline. If you somehow made it in here

  6. without an outline, they're coming all

  7. the way to the front and they're going

  8. to give it to you. Just lift your hand

  9. and they'll make sure that you have one

  10. as we study in Genesis. Um we've just

  11. been singing This is my story, praising

  12. my savior all the day long. uh Sheran

  13. Hills uh starting point group. What did

  14. I tell you? What kind of worship that we

  15. have this morning? For those of you who

  16. are in Starting Point, what did we say

  17. when pastors used to ask me, "What kind

  18. of worship do you guys have over there

  19. at Sheridan Hills?" What did I used to

  20. tell pastors?

  21. >> 247.

  22. >> Very good. Okay. Enthusiastic. 24/7.

  23. That's the kind of worship we have at

  24. Sheran Hills. That's not the name of a

  25. new band. What that is is the call of

  26. Christ for us to worship the Lord all

  27. the day long. We are called to walk with

  28. him and to worship him as we go. Well,

  29. one of the great things that helps us in

  30. our worship of God as we go is to be in

  31. his word, allowing his word to come and

  32. to renovate re just completely renew our

  33. minds. And so here's another thing that

  34. we often say here in the life of the

  35. church. Truth in the mind brings hope to

  36. the heart. Can you say that together

  37. with me? Truth in the mind brings hope

  38. to the heart. And so that's what we come

  39. to the word of God for. And so this

  40. morning we come to return to our study

  41. of Genesis. And we're going to look at

  42. God, the creator. In fact, today we will

  43. finally finish the first sentence of the

  44. Bible. And so I want you to notice here

  45. with me in Genesis 1 in verses 1 and

  46. two, it says, "In the beginning, God

  47. created the heavens and the earth. The

  48. earth was without form and void.

  49. Darkness was over the face of the deep,

  50. and the spirit of God was hovering over

  51. the face of the waters." Well, this

  52. morning we are going to come to that

  53. first sentence once again and I want you

  54. to see with me some beautiful um

  55. depictions of part of the creation that

  56. we enjoy. How many of you enjoy seeing

  57. the mountains? Do you enjoy seeing the

  58. mountains? I enjoy mountains. I I really

  59. do. And um we have beautiful mountains

  60. on the east coast, but we also have

  61. beautiful mountains over on the west

  62. coast. These are images from um the

  63. Redwoods National Forest Area and the

  64. Great Sequoia uh National Forest Area.

  65. Those two areas, not too far from one

  66. another, grand and glorious forests that

  67. look from a distance um beautiful in

  68. themselves as being in mountainous

  69. areas. Many times when we go visit

  70. those, we want to go and use a map in

  71. order to be able to see the beauty that

  72. is there. Some of you enjoy hiking a

  73. little bit. How many of you have ever

  74. enjoyed hiking very much in your life?

  75. You kind of enjoyed that. Maybe you

  76. can't do it anymore, but you enjoy that.

  77. We love that. I love that. My sister

  78. sent me a picture. I'll show you in just

  79. a minute of her. She and Brad are out

  80. west. And uh the map helps you enjoy

  81. the sites because you see what's coming.

  82. You you looking at the map of the sites

  83. that are to come. Look at this. And

  84. these are from those beautiful giant

  85. sequoas. When I was 9 years old, my

  86. grandparents took me on a 9,000mi

  87. camping trip and we went to Great

  88. Sequoia. I've been in this lodge that is

  89. here. Check this out, boys and girls.

  90. The building, the trees are so big that

  91. when they fall across the road, uh, you

  92. have to cut a hole in it so that you can

  93. even travel through and go on through

  94. and see the glory and the grander of it.

  95. Now, that's a tree, right?

  96. Our biggest trees here would be called

  97. bushes compared to those.

  98. My sister sent me this picture this

  99. week. She grew up here in the life of

  100. this church. She and her husband have

  101. retired and they're enjoying seeing a

  102. little bit of the sights. Does anybody

  103. see what she has around her waist there?

  104. >> Bear spray. That's right. Because all

  105. for all the beauty, there's a little bit

  106. of danger that lurks around. Um, but

  107. when we come and we see the great

  108. wonders of creation, this general

  109. Sherman tree, one of the uh volumewise,

  110. it's the largest tree in the world. more

  111. lumber in that tree than any other tree

  112. in the world. You come to a group of

  113. sequoas that are there and redwoods that

  114. are there called the house and the

  115. beauty of all that is there. We we see

  116. the glory of God's nature of God's

  117. creation, the wonders that he has

  118. created. We walk through the forest and

  119. we see so sometimes we'll we'll see the

  120. beauty of what God has made down on the

  121. surface of the earth. Sometimes we look

  122. to the heavens. Today I just am kind of

  123. amazed. Now I was here in this park in

  124. the Redwoods National Forest when I was

  125. uh 10 years old uh with my grandparents.

  126. And so we had left South Florida. We had

  127. driven all the way across the United

  128. States down through the Grand Canyon. We

  129. went to 37 states. And when we wound up

  130. on the other side of the United States,

  131. true story, um we were there and

  132. granddad pulled the van in to this

  133. forest and we got out to go up to one of

  134. the little ranger stations and I simply

  135. climbed up on a little wooden fence. I

  136. was standing there on a wooden fence

  137. looking out into this forest across the

  138. ferns and everything else. And from

  139. behind me, I heard Andrew Vance Coleman,

  140. "Get off of that fence.

  141. It was my third grade Sunday school

  142. teacher from here at Sheran Hills."

  143. I could not believe it. I thought, "Wow,

  144. I go all the way across the United

  145. States and I still can't get away with

  146. anything."

  147. So

  148. it was in a setting much like that where

  149. we see the beauty and the wonder and I

  150. was learning at that time to be in awe

  151. of all those things and uh then

  152. sometimes of course the joy of

  153. imagination comes in to our lives and

  154. some of you know where that's taken care

  155. of from but

  156. this morning we want us to look again at

  157. the God the creator and we see this in

  158. Genesis Number one, let's review from

  159. last week a little bit. Review from last

  160. week. Number one, go Genesis gives us

  161. the foundation of a biblical world view.

  162. Of a biblical worldview. What it begins

  163. with is this. In the beginning, God. In

  164. the beginning, God. This is our

  165. presupposition.

  166. This is our presupposition that that God

  167. is there. Everybody comes to nature with

  168. presuppositions.

  169. For the materialist, he begins by saying

  170. in the beginning material

  171. um for the naturalist in the beginning

  172. nature something happened. There was

  173. something there. We come through

  174. scripture with this very blatant prod

  175. from scripture. this very blatant

  176. picture from scripture that we come that

  177. it is God that is literally at the

  178. beginning place of our understanding and

  179. our theology. Scripture makes no bones

  180. about that whatsoever. The very first

  181. subject of scripture is God. The very

  182. first subject of scripture is God.

  183. Number two, Genesis 1 through 11, those

  184. chapters 1-1 concerns the whole human

  185. race. We looked at the fact last week

  186. that the whole human race is affected

  187. through Genesis 1-11. All that were

  188. there uh upon the earth. So Genesis

  189. 1-11, God and the world. God and the

  190. world. And then we also said in Genesis

  191. 12 through 50, it becomes God and do you

  192. remember what it says? What did we say?

  193. God and

  194. >> one family. That's right. The family of

  195. who? Of Abraham. the family of Abraham

  196. and his descendants. We will see that

  197. story. But for this study, we're looking

  198. at God in the world. He's at work.

  199. Number three, in the beginning is the is

  200. the beginning of creation, not the

  201. beginning of God.

  202. We we clearly saw that God transcends.

  203. He's before the creation. Look at this.

  204. Psalm 90 and verse two. Before the

  205. mountains. Can you circle the word

  206. before on your outline right there in

  207. Psalm 90:2? Before the mountains were

    Psalms 90:2

  208. brought forth or ever you had formed the

  209. earth and the world. Underline it. From

  210. everlasting to everlasting. What does it

  211. say at the end?

  212. >> You are God. Underline that. You are

  213. God. This is who he is. This is the

  214. presupposition of scripture. This is the

  215. grand and glorious picture of what

  216. scripture clearly tells us and this is

  217. his plan for our faith and our

  218. understanding of the world. Number four,

  219. everything ultimately falls into two

  220. categories.

  221. Creator

  222. versus created

  223. or creation.

  224. So everything is either the creator or

  225. that which was made. Everything that

  226. exists in all of the universe um is

  227. either God or the that which God has

  228. made. You see this great distinction is

  229. going to dominate the remainder of

  230. Genesis 1. This concept you say, "Well,

  231. that's such a basic concept. Why are you

  232. why are you mentioning that, Pastor

  233. Andrew?" I I want to mention that. I

  234. want you to see this because this is

  235. what the creation narrative is going to

  236. show us is that everything comes down to

  237. creator versus created and that he

  238. indeed has created all things. Now a lot

  239. of the times when we want to have an

  240. overview when we want to look like I

  241. showed you a picture of a map. The idea

  242. of a map is that you can look down on

  243. the whole landscape here and you can see

  244. where to go. you can see better the

  245. whole picture. If you're right there in

  246. the forest in the trees, you may not be

  247. able to see where to go. But a map

  248. allows you to have a bird's we call a

  249. bird's eyee view. Well, we don't want

  250. just a bird's eye view on this. We would

  251. like an airliner view on this. So,

  252. notice this. Number one, I want us to

  253. see the creation account from a 30,000

  254. ft. Um, we we want a 30,000 ft view on

  255. this. We want to back out and see the

  256. big picture.

  257. Why do we do this? Well, letter A is

  258. this. We ask ourselves, why are there

  259. creation accounts in both Genesis 1 and

  260. Genesis 2? And the reason that I bring

  261. this up is because when I was at Florida

  262. State University, I remember somebody

  263. saying, "Well, my goodness, in the first

  264. chapters of the Bible, there's

  265. contradictory accounts of how God

  266. created the world." One says one thing

  267. and then another one immediately says

  268. something else and the skeptics's view

  269. was that the Bible is full of errors and

  270. can't be understood. Well, that's only

  271. because they have not they have not

  272. taken the time to carefully look and

  273. even see literarily and contentwise

  274. what is truly being explored by this

  275. gloriously beautiful and intricate word

  276. of God. this this beautiful expose of

  277. what God has done not only on the

  278. surface but the underlying meaning of it

  279. all in his great intention. So it's a

  280. very ignorant thing to say that well

  281. Genesis 1 is in contrast to Genesis 2

  282. and they conflict. That's a very

  283. ignorant thing to say. That's a skeptic

  284. that has not done his homework and does

  285. not understand the nature of scripture

  286. at all or understand what is being

  287. accomplished by God through Moses and

  288. explaining to us what he has done. So

  289. what we're going to see here is this and

  290. this is because that we're going to

  291. study both of these chapters. There's a

  292. creation account one and then a creation

  293. account two. We're going to see both of

  294. them and be able to compare them. But I

  295. want you to see from the outset this

  296. picture. This will help you notice that

  297. Genesis 1 through chapter 2 and just up

  298. to verse three. So it's mainly all

  299. Genesis chapter 1 is what we call the

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  300. panoramic view. It's the panoramic view.

  301. It's that wide view of creation. And

  302. notice what is in that. Do you see the

  303. list that is below that? Notice these.

  304. The heavens and the earth. We see that

  305. mentioned even in these verses that

  306. we're studying now. And then we're going

  307. to see light and darkness. And then

  308. after that, it's the sky and the seas.

  309. And then after that, the land and the

  310. vegetation. And then after that, the sun

  311. and the moon and the stars. And then the

  312. sea creatures and the birds. And the

  313. land animals as well. So that's that's

  314. one whole picture that we're going to

  315. see there. And then look at the next one

  316. over here in Genesis 2:es

  317. 4-2.

  318. We see another account and notice what

  319. we see here. This is the closeup view.

  320. This is the close-up view regarding

  321. humanity. Look at this. Formation of

  322. Adam, the Garden of Eden, God's command,

  323. man's work or his vocation,

  324. man's need for companionship and God's

  325. design in that and the formation of Eve.

  326. And then we see this glorious thing

  327. toward the end of that creation account,

  328. the institution

  329. of marriage. And so we see that even

  330. marriage, the the grand and glorious not

  331. physical creation of the world, but the

  332. the spiritual creation of the world, we

  333. begin to see this relational aspect that

  334. is so important to God that goes beyond.

  335. Last week we talked about that. Last

  336. week we looked at how many chapters are

  337. dedicated to explicitly telling us how

  338. God created the world. Two. How many

  339. chapters are in the Bible?

  340. One. No chapters. Not books of the

  341. Bible. Chapters.

  342. 1,189.

  343. So only two chapters dedicated to

  344. explicitly telling us how the world came

  345. to be. And then there's 1,187

  346. chapters that are talking about all of

  347. the other things, the spiritual aspect

  348. of who we are as beings and God's

  349. relational nature to us. What we see

  350. here is is that the spiritual things are

  351. far more important to understand than

  352. the physical things. Now, by God's

  353. grace, we can understand a tremendous

  354. amount of physical things. He's given us

  355. very good brains. He's given us

  356. intelligence. He's given us the ability

  357. to learn and to grow. We have cognition

  358. and the ability to think. We we we've

  359. been given a a just vast vast uh

  360. landscape of knowledge that we can

  361. appreciate and learn and grow about the

  362. physical universe. But what we learn is

  363. that's not the most important thing.

  364. The most important thing for us to come

  365. to understand is who God is and who we

  366. are.

  367. And so what we see that God is revealing

  368. himself through the creation and we'll

  369. see that from Romans chapter 1 in the

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  370. coming weeks. But notice this down there

  371. at the bottom of your page. The

  372. panoramic view is talking about all of

  373. creation. And the closeup view is

  374. looking at humanity. Two very different

  375. purposes in this setup for the rest of

  376. God's word. And so the skeptic that says

  377. these two accounts are in contrast to

  378. one another simply does not understand

  379. what is happening in these two chapters.

  380. God is gloriously setting us up to

  381. understand what is most important to

  382. him. Number two, uh or letter B here,

  383. Genesis 1, I want us to to overview.

  384. Again, this is our map of where we're

  385. going. Uh, letter B, Genesis 1, creation

  386. by the day. Creation by the day. Um, and

  387. this means each one of the days

  388. mentioned, day one, day two, day three,

  389. all the way down to day seven. Remember

  390. with me that Genesis 1 is going to

  391. outline these. The light day and night

  392. is going to be expended. The expanse,

  393. waters divided. There's there's several

  394. statements that are here about what God

  395. is doing in the physical universe of

  396. this dry land and seas, the vegetation,

  397. the sun, moon, and when you say stars,

  398. that's the rest of the universe. Um, so

  399. all of the galaxies and all that exists

  400. beyond our own solar system. How about

  401. number five? Sea creatures and birds,

  402. land animals, and then look at this on

  403. day six. land, animals, and man and

  404. woman. This is God's um a this is his

  405. his premier pinnacle of his creation is

  406. when he makes man and woman. We're going

  407. to look at that. We're going to talk

  408. about why is it that when he created man

  409. and he created woman, when he created

  410. humanity, that this was his prized

  411. possession. This was the pinnacle of his

  412. creation. We'll look at that both

  413. physically and um uh in its in its

  414. symbolism as well. And then what

  415. happened on day seven?

  416. >> That's right. God rests. God rests. And

  417. we're going to see the beauty and the

  418. importance of that. Now, the box here

  419. also shows us another way this breaks up

  420. a little bit. And it's going to help us

  421. to understand as we study. First of all,

  422. days 1 through three. In days 1 through

  423. three, we see that God forms. God forms

  424. light, darkness, sky, waters, land, and

  425. vegetation. And then days 4-6, we see

  426. it's not just that he formed it, but now

  427. he fills it. Um, so the luminaries

  428. governing the day and the night, the

  429. birds and the sea creatures filling

  430. skies and waters, animals and mankind

  431. inher inhabiting the earth. This is

  432. important because what we see that God

  433. is revealing as he unfolds what is

  434. important and what is what is focusing

  435. us on him as creator. He first forms

  436. everything and then he fills it and then

  437. once again on day seven what does he do?

  438. >> God rests. Doesn't tell us how he rests.

  439. It just simply tells us that God rests.

  440. Well, we want to dive back into the

  441. actual words here as we come to once

  442. again and to finish the first sentence

  443. of the Bible and we see it in God

  444. created. So that's next. Last week we

  445. looked at in the beginning God. In the

  446. beginning God, the the presupposition of

  447. God, the glorious first subject of that,

  448. but we not only see the first subject of

  449. the Bible, but we see the first action

  450. of the Bible. And that is God created.

  451. Um would notice there on your outline,

  452. God created. Below the word God is

  453. Elohim which is the the Hebrew word for

  454. God. The generic Hebrew word for God. It

  455. is not his personal name. That would be

  456. YHW

  457. which we have often pronounced Yahweh.

  458. But here we see this is the general word

  459. for God. So the assumed word for this

  460. one who can create created. Bara. This

  461. is a Hebrew word that is used throughout

  462. the Bible to talk about the creative

  463. nature of God in this that he creates.

  464. Well, here's some key things. First of

  465. all, we said that God is the subject and

  466. the Bible's first action is God's

  467. action, not man's action. It is his

  468. action. This first action is that of

  469. what?

  470. >> Creating. Circle that. That's the first

  471. thing we see of action in the Bible is

  472. that God created. In the beginning, God

  473. created.

  474. Now, we're making such a big deal of

  475. this and going over this because

  476. friends, this is monumentally important

  477. for anyone seeking truth to understand

  478. where all things began. This is what the

  479. Bible deals with. This is what the Bible

  480. lays as a foundation for everything else

  481. we can know about God is that he comes

  482. and he creates.

  483. Notice this with me. Barra is used in

  484. the Old Testament to refer to God's

  485. creating work. Um that's the way this

  486. word is used over and over again. That

  487. is the assumption that is being here.

  488. And the context is this. The context is

  489. creation of something from what? From

  490. nothing.

  491. Last week I told you that Marcy is a

  492. great cook, but she can't do an I dream

  493. of genie thing that just goes boing and

  494. there's flour and there is sugar and

  495. there is uh butter and there is all

  496. these things. No, she has to go to the

  497. store and buy the ingredients in order

  498. to make what has to be made. There is

  499. only one who creates from nothing and

  500. that is the very first one mentioned in

  501. all of scripture. The eternal God.

  502. Notice the Latin phrase ex nahilo and

  503. that the x means from. Nahilo means

  504. nothing. From nothing. This is not a

  505. Hebrew uh statement. This is a Latin

  506. doctrine. So the Latin doctrine is the

  507. assumption. this picture that we see

  508. through the scripture by total inference

  509. by clear inference that God is creating

  510. from nothing. That is logically that is

  511. clearly academically scholastically

  512. what we see the Bible is teaching that

  513. this is the assumption that God is

  514. creating from nothing. And then the rest

  515. of scripture makes clear that that's

  516. exactly what's happening. Remember with

  517. me, the Bible fits together like lock

  518. and key. In fact, let's fast forward

  519. thousands of years to Hebrews. Hebrews

  520. 11 in verse three. Look what it says

  521. there at the bottom. Look what it says.

  522. By faith, we understand. This is one of

  523. our key verses that we've been talking

  524. about. Yes, faith is involved in our

  525. understanding. By faith, we understand

  526. that the universe was created by what?

  527. >> Word.

  528. >> The word of God.

  529. So that what is seen,

  530. look what it says, read it out loud, was

  531. not made out of the things that are

  532. visible.

  533. So what was seen is not made out of the

  534. things that are visible. This comes from

  535. God. Something that is invisible,

  536. something that is there and it only

  537. exists in him. Look at Romans 4 and

  538. verse 17. The Apostle Paul writes about

  539. Abraham. So that that family that we're

  540. going to trace um in in Genesis 12-15,

  541. that family that we're going to trace,

  542. but the Apostle Paul's writing about

  543. him, look what it says. As it is

  544. written, I have made you the father of

  545. many nations, speaking of Abraham, in

  546. the presence of the God in whom he

  547. believed, who gives life to the dead.

  548. and read it out loud and calls into

  549. existence the things that do not exist.

  550. Isn't that amazing? He calls into

  551. existence the things that do not exist.

  552. This is the God of creation. This is God

  553. first subject of the Bible creating.

  554. First verb of the Bible, first action of

  555. the Bible, God is creating. Look at John

  556. 1 and:3. The Apostle John writes about

  557. Jesus. All things were made through him

  558. and without him. Read it out loud. Was

  559. not anything made that was made. So it's

  560. only through him. The only thing that

  561. exists are the things that he has made.

  562. All of scripture testifies that

  563. everything that that is owes its

  564. existence to God. owes its existence.

  565. Sorry. Everything that exists begins

  566. with him. Okay. So this is why we have

  567. entitled this series the God of what?

  568. What did we say? The God of everything,

  569. right? The God of everything. I mean,

  570. notice this slide that shows us this is

  571. the picture of the whole series. The God

  572. of everything. This is what he's made.

  573. This he this is who he is.

  574. He is the God of

  575. >> everything. Number three. So God created

  576. and then what does he create? The

  577. heavens and the earth. Now this is an

  578. important phrase. This is an important

  579. phrase and I want you to see the

  580. importance of why it says this here in

  581. the first sentence of the Bible. So

  582. remember with me this is the first

  583. sentence of the Bible.

  584. What we see here is in the beginning God

  585. created what? The heavens and the earth.

  586. Why does it you say? Well, wait a

  587. minute. It's going to break it down as

  588. he goes and he goes in to more detail in

  589. the verses to come. Yes, but that's not

  590. the intent of this. I want you to see

  591. what the intent of this is. This phrase

  592. is the first sentence in the first

  593. sentence of the Bible is a murism. This

  594. is a murism. And what is a murism? A

  595. murism is two extremes. Two extremes

  596. expressing totality.

  597. say what in the world do you mean by

  598. that? Well, I've given some examples

  599. that are here. I like these examples.

  600. Common examples of other morisms here.

  601. Look at this.

  602. Um, high and low. I searched high and

  603. low. What does that mean?

  604. >> I searched what?

  605. >> Everywhere.

  606. Um, body and soul. He dedicated body and

  607. soul to his work. What does that mean?

  608. All he had, everything he's got. How

  609. about this one? Day and night. She

  610. thought about it day and night. What

  611. does that mean?

  612. >> All the time, right?

  613. >> How about this one? Lock, stock, and

  614. barrel.

  615. He sold his company. Lock, stock, and

  616. barrel. That means he sold everything.

  617. Now, that actually is a a very old

  618. medieval statement about firearms. He

  619. sold the whole gun. He sold the lock. He

  620. sold the stock. He sold the barrel. The

  621. whole thing. Um, not peacemealing it.

  622. How about this one? Ladies and

  623. gentlemen, step right up. What does that

  624. mean?

  625. >> Everyone. Everyone. These are

  626. morrisisms. And that's what the Bible

  627. begins with. The point is this. The

  628. first sentence of the Bible is simply

  629. and profoundly saying God made

  630. everything.

  631. This is the opening point of the Bible

  632. and this is the main point of the Bible

  633. that God made everything. You see,

  634. creation is not God.

  635. That's that's showing us that pantheism

  636. is absolutely false.

  637. God is not part of creation.

  638. You see, God transcends creation. He is

  639. in his creation, but he's not bound in

  640. his creation. He goes beyond his

  641. creation. Now, think with me how we see

  642. this. Now, and just these two that are

  643. already mentioned here. God is not

  644. creation is not God. What we need to

  645. understand is is that humanity is prone

  646. to worship creation as God.

  647. This has to do with all of the idols

  648. that are around the world. We often look

  649. we will see in if if you study world

  650. history if you study the the events that

  651. are going on even around God's people as

  652. they come into the Canaanite um beliefs

  653. as they come into which is in the

  654. promised land Canaan or they come out of

  655. Egypt or they go over to Babylon they go

  656. to the various gods that are all around

  657. them you know what they do they're

  658. worshiping the sun

  659. they're worshiping the moon. They're

  660. worshiping the rain. They're worshiping

  661. all of these that they're worshiping the

  662. stars. They would worship trees.

  663. They would worship animals. So animals

  664. would be part of their worship. Their

  665. their worship has to do that. This is

  666. the reason when we see Israel's

  667. idolatry, they're just mimicking the

  668. gods that they had seen. So they made a

  669. golden calf to worship it.

  670. This is this is panthe the the idea of

  671. worshiping things in creation or seeing

  672. all of creation as that which can be

  673. worshiped. So you would say how stupid,

  674. how ridiculous. Well, let me tell you

  675. that there are plenty of people on the

  676. planet today that worship parts of the

  677. creation.

  678. And there are plenty of people, listen

  679. to this, in America, there are plenty

  680. plenty of people right here in South

  681. Florida, and there's maybe even some in

  682. this room

  683. that worship creation

  684. by by exalting creation as the great

  685. God. In fact, in a very very small way,

  686. we see little hints of it. We we we call

  687. Earth what?

  688. >> Mother Earth, right?

  689. In a small way, we can begin to elevate

  690. the creation toward those things. When

  691. we look at extreme environmentalism,

  692. there are people who have just dedicated

  693. their lives to saving Biscane Bay or

  694. there's people who have dedicated their

  695. lives to saving a certain turtle or

  696. certain people have dedicated their

  697. lives to various things. Now, should we

  698. be good stewards of Biscane Bay? Yes.

  699. Should we stop pollution from going into

  700. Biscane Bay? Yes. Should we save the

  701. green leatherback turtles? Yes, we

  702. should do that. We should not we should

  703. not discard and abuse God's creation.

  704. And anyone who would suggest those

  705. things that that uh the idea of caring

  706. for our environment is not a Christian

  707. value clearly does not understand

  708. stewardship from scripture. We should be

  709. passionate about those things. There is

  710. no doubt about it. But should those

  711. pursuits come anything close to the way

  712. we worship the creator of all things?

  713. >> No.

  714. But there are people who would say the

  715. most important thing in this life is to

  716. take care of the environment.

  717. There are people who would say there's

  718. nothing more important because this is

  719. an existential threat. If we don't take

  720. care of the environment, then we're all

  721. going to die. Now there are some

  722. politicians that even said that I think

  723. we still have about five years left

  724. before one particular politician said

  725. the world is going to end because um of

  726. uh global warming.

  727. Friends,

  728. this is not what we are called. We we

  729. are called to care for the environment

  730. without worshiping it. We are called to

  731. enjoy the world that God has made us,

  732. but we enjoy it that much more. Listen

  733. to this. When we can wonder and exalt

  734. and rejoice in the one who made it.

  735. >> And that's the point of this opening

  736. sentence.

  737. In the beginning, God created the

  738. heavens and the earth. He created

  739. everything. You're wondering where it

  740. all came from. It was God. There are no

  741. moons to worship. There are no cows to

  742. worship. There are no uh hydraologic

  743. cycles to worship. There is no god of

  744. fertility that we are called to worship.

  745. No, what we are do what we are called to

  746. do is to worship the one true God. And

  747. the second thing as we mention here is

  748. that God is not part of that creation.

  749. This is in very very important God

  750. keyword transcends that means to go

  751. beyond. And so Jesus comes and he comes

  752. into our world. But was he bound

  753. by creation's laws? No. And he shows us

  754. this over and over again. Here he is God

  755. in the flesh. And what does he do when

  756. he comes up to lame people? When he

  757. comes up to blind people? When he comes

  758. up to people who cannot speak, when he

  759. comes up to a leper, the the the person

  760. with leprosy all over their body, what

  761. does he do? He defies the physical. He

  762. defies all of the things of creation.

  763. And he goes beyond those laws over into

  764. his overarching law of dominance

  765. in rulership

  766. and lordship. You see, he's the Lord of

  767. all creation. So, he can suspend the

  768. laws of time and space whenever he wants

  769. to. He transcends the kind the creation.

  770. He goes beyond it. And this is how he

  771. saves us. If he could not do that, he

  772. could not save us. But that's exactly

  773. what he does. He is not bound by

  774. creation.

  775. Well, the third thing that we see here,

  776. and two verses are going to help us with

  777. this. Not only is God um over all

  778. things, but God owns all things. He owns

  779. all of creation because he made it. He

  780. owns it.

  781. So, this is the the picture of it. When

  782. when we see Bernard make a great

  783. painting and he just he kind of creates

  784. that out of yes using the paint and

  785. everything else but he makes a painting

  786. that's his painting. I mean that's

  787. that's that's his painting and it's his

  788. painting to do what he wants. He can

  789. sell it or he can give it away or he can

  790. do whatever he wants to do but he

  791. created that and he and he made that and

  792. he gives it away. The creator has the

  793. right of ownership.

  794. And notice Psalm 24 and verse one.

  795. The earth is whose?

  796. >> The Lord's. The earth is the Lord's and

  797. the fullness thereof. What does that

  798. mean? The fullness thereof.

  799. >> Right out there to the side. Everything

  800. in it. Right. The fullness everything

  801. that makes it full. The earth is the

  802. Lord and the fullness thereof. And the

  803. world and those who dwell therein. Can

  804. you circle the word those?

  805. Because we see here that the psalmist is

  806. showing us it's not just the cosmos of

  807. the whole creation but it is those those

  808. who dwell in it. This is talking about

  809. people.

  810. God is the owner of every person.

  811. Look at Psalm 10:3.

    Psalms 10:3

  812. It is he who made us

  813. and we are his.

  814. We are his people and the sheep of his

  815. pasture.

  816. And if you if you read Psalm 100 and

  817. verse 1, 2, and three, that is the

  818. point. It it's not a statement, the King

  819. James translates it that it is he who

  820. has made us and not we ourselves. THAT'S

  821. BECAUSE OF ONE tiny little mark over

  822. Hebrew character that it's it's either

  823. that we are not ourselves or we are his.

  824. And so there's there's depending on

  825. which text you look at, it shows the

  826. difference in that. And the text that is

  827. obviously most accurate is the one that

  828. says that's all about ownership and

  829. about who are his. And that's what we

  830. see in Psalm 24. Psalm 24, the earth is

  831. the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the

  832. world and those who dwell therein. God

  833. owns the inhabitants of the earth. He

  834. has made us. We are his people and the

  835. sheep of his pasture.

  836. This is his grand and glorious plan.

  837. Now, this is so beautiful because

  838. here's what God cares about.

  839. God made all of creation.

  840. And his prized

  841. creation is humanity.

  842. It's the thing he cares most about.

  843. And this is this is what it translates

  844. to you and me.

  845. He wants you.

  846. >> He loves you.

  847. >> He cares for you.

  848. You see, this creation account

  849. becomes intensely

  850. personal.

  851. This isn't just about the cosmos. This

  852. isn't just about the universe.

  853. Where all this is going is that God

  854. cares about people. He cares about you.

  855. And what he amazingly does,

  856. we see and we find as we study scripture

  857. and as we go on in scripture, he makes

  858. us twice.

  859. He first makes us physically.

  860. But for those who are in Christ, he

  861. makes us again

  862. spiritually.

  863. This is what he does. And this is

  864. clearly the teaching of scripture

  865. >> that we see that he is all about the

  866. rebirth of men. He is all about the

  867. rebirth of human beings saving them,

  868. listen to this, from their living death.

  869. We're going to see that as part of the

  870. curse, he says, "The moment that you eat

  871. of this tree, you shall surely die." And

  872. we will see in the that the doctrine of

  873. the fall where all of humanity is

  874. tainted with sin turned against a holy

  875. God. And what God is intent on doing

  876. from that very moment. Listen to this.

  877. God is going to show us his grace and

  878. his mercy and his power

  879. by giving us a second birth.

  880. This is the amazing good news of the

  881. whole Bible that he is all about not

  882. just creating us once

  883. but creating us again so that listen to

  884. this so that we may see what love looks

  885. like. We may see what grace looks like.

  886. so that we may see

  887. what the true power looks like that he

  888. has to change not just physical cre

  889. creation but also our human hearts.

  890. John chapter 3 and verse three, a

    John 3 chapter mention

  891. teacher of the Bible, the teacher of the

  892. law comes to Jesus in the dark of night

  893. and he's asking him a question and Jesus

  894. responds to him and says this truly

  895. truly I say to you unless one is what?

  896. >> born again he cannot see the kingdom of

  897. God. He cannot see the kingdom of God.

  898. So he can see the creation.

  899. He can see the kingdoms of men.

  900. But he cannot see the kingdom of God.

  901. This is the glorious plan of God that we

  902. may be born again through Jesus Christ.

  903. Amen.

  904. >> Let's stand together as we pray.

  905. Father in heaven,

  906. I thank you that you are the God of

  907. everything,

  908. that nothing exists apart from you

  909. and that you had a grand and glorious

  910. plan from the beginning to show us your

  911. heart.

  912. Lord, we look at the tragedy of Nepal.

  913. We look at the tragedies of cancer. We

  914. look at the tragedies of abuse,

  915. of sin, of fallenness, of death.

  916. And we see that from the start, Lord,

  917. you made it and it was good. But

  918. rebellion

  919. turns us away

  920. from all that is holy and good. And yet,

  921. Lord, you had a plan to overcome it all.

  922. Lord, I thank you that you have a plan

  923. for our rebirth because we so

  924. desperately need it.

  925. And so Lord, I pray that as we see the

  926. creation that we would see a God who not

  927. only is powerful

  928. and intelligent and amazing in those

  929. ways, but we see a God who is loving and

  930. kind

  931. and that would lay down his life so that

  932. we too may live. Lord, I pray that this

  933. truth would come home to those who have

  934. not yet received it. Lord, I pray for

  935. those who've been struggling with this,

  936. maybe for decades, Lord, that you would

  937. do a work in their heart to see that

  938. yes, there are presuppositions.

  939. Everybody has presuppositions, but

  940. you've called us to the presupposition

  941. that all of creation testifies that our

  942. very existence shows your existence.

  943. And not only that, but you show us your

  944. love. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
