  1. Father, we come before you as people, even the best of us, are frail and minuscule compared to you.

  2. What can we bring to you as if you have need?

  3. So Lord, help us, by your Holy Spirit, come to you with arms open to receive.

  4. Lord, help us bring to you the only thing that we can truly bring to you,

  5. a humility before you, saying that you are God and we are man.

  6. And Lord, as we open your word, help us to be people that are underneath your word,

  7. that submit to your word, that trust that your word is from you and that your word is good.

  8. So Lord, we ask that you open our eyes, open our ears, prepare our hearts this morning.

  9. In Christ's name, amen.

  10. One of the best things I've watched, maybe, I don't want to say ever, that seems rather dramatic,

  11. but, I mean, say top five, is the HBO miniseries Chernobyl.

  12. I really, I don't know, it gripped me.

  13. It was a fantastic miniseries.

  14. It's, as you could guess, about the nuclear meltdown in May of 86 in Chernobyl, what is now in Ukraine.

  15. A nuclear reactor exploded and the Chernobyl recounts the explosion, but really the aftermath of the official investigation.

  16. After all the secrets and cover-ups and passing the blame on an institutional level,

  17. the lead character, a man named Valery Legazov, a true person, he really lived,

  18. he was standing in front of a tribunal.

  19. After already lying to kind of an official UN-style delegation in Austria,

  20. he kind of towed the party line, but in front of this tribunal,

  21. he decides to tell the truth.

  22. When asked why the nuclear reactor exploded, he boldly says this,

  23. because of our secrets and our lies.

  24. They are practically what define us.

  25. When the truth offends us, we lie and lie until we can no longer remember it.

  26. Remember it is there, but it is still there.

  27. Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth.

  28. Sooner or later, that debt is paid.

  29. That is how an RBMK reactor explodes by lies.

  30. Very powerful scene, like, really powerful scene.

  31. Lies, deceit, delusion, willful misrepresentation, betrayal.

  32. All enemies of the truth.

  33. We come to the fateful passage of Mark.

  34. Mark, it seems like it's been leading up to it week after week.

  35. We're going to get there, we're going to get there.

  36. Jesus finally is betrayed.

  37. His passion finally begins.

  38. Mark chapter 14, starting in verse 43.

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  39. Jesus is betrayed by Judas

  40. into the hands of the religious establishment

  41. who will try to drum up some kind of accusation

  42. to then hand him over to the Romans

  43. who will eventually nail him to a crucifix

  44. and he is left to die.

  45. We will see how the entirety of Jesus' betrayal and arrest,

  46. everything that follows,

  47. was built upon lies and deceit.

  48. None of the people that act against Jesus

  49. are doing so in a truthful way.

  50. In any, by, I mean, you could try to see it in a charitable way.

  51. There's just no chance you can.

  52. Lies and deceit, betrayal.

  53. Be they the personal lies that we tell others,

  54. ourselves, or big cultural lies

  55. that are perpetuated by trusted institutions.

  56. Lies seem to be the most expedient way

  57. to deal with unwanted situations

  58. or unwanted people or unwanted issues.

  59. But the problem is,

  60. those lies can never keep the truth covered up indefinitely.

  61. For a season, for a time,

  62. for maybe even a generation.

  63. But the truth will always have victory over the lies.

  64. Lies perpetuate and grow

  65. until the facade that is built up

  66. comes tumbling down.

  67. Truth cannot be denied forever.

  68. It can't be.

  69. So we're going to look at the betrayal of Jesus.

  70. We're going to look at it hopefully in depth,

  71. focusing on the actors involved.

  72. We're going to look at Judas.

  73. We're going to look at the religious leaders.

  74. We're going to look at the disciples.

  75. We're also going to look at you and I in all of this.

  76. So let's take a look at Judas.

  77. We'll get right into it.

  78. Verses 43.

  79. By the way, if you want to grab a Bible,

  80. there's still a few back there.

  81. If you can follow along, that'd be great.

  82. If not, just listen.

  83. Verse 43.

  84. Oh, a bit of a background.

  85. Jesus, he...

  86. The Last Supper is instituted.

  87. Jesus foretells the denial of Peter.

  88. Everybody swears they're going to follow him to their grave.

  89. Jesus prays in Gethsemane.

  90. The disciples that just swore up and down,

  91. they're going to be with him to the end, fall asleep.

  92. And Jesus, in verse 42, says,

  93. Rise, let us be going.

  94. See my betrayers at hand.

  95. And this is that immediately.

  96. So this is like boom, boom, boom, subsequent events,

  97. kind of one after another.

  98. Verse 43.

  99. And immediately when he was still speaking,

  100. that is Jesus, Judas came, one of the twelve,

  101. and with him a crowd with swords and clubs

  102. from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

  103. Verse 44.

  104. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,

  105. The one I will kiss is the man.

  106. Seize him and lead him away under guard.

  107. Judas is called Judas in verse 43,

  108. and then the betrayer in 44.

  109. And after this section, we don't hear from him again.

  110. In other gospel accounts, in Matthews, for instance,

  111. I mean, we, in Luke's, I think in John's as well,

  112. there's a bit of an aftermath,

  113. kind of like the backstory of what happens with Judas after the fact.

  114. Here, Judas, he disappears.

  115. He is on the scene.

  116. He betrays.

  117. He's called the betrayer.

  118. And then he is gone.

  119. Notice here that Mark makes it very clear that Judas,

  120. one of the twelve, he is described.

  121. Judas, I mean, up until this point,

  122. was still a disciple,

  123. a part of Jesus' inner circle.

  124. And a part of that inner circle meant that Judas had journeyed with Jesus for,

  125. I mean, three years,

  126. had been in the Galilee,

  127. had seen Jesus raise a paralytic from the grave,

  128. calm a storm,

  129. cast out demons,

  130. teach.

  131. He also commissioned his twelve,

  132. which Judas would have been one of,

  133. to go and do ministry in Jesus' name.

  134. Judas was an intimate part of Jesus' very group,

  135. and would have, at the very least,

  136. maybe he was a bit thick-skulled,

  137. and he didn't quite understand that Jesus was saying that he was the Messiah,

  138. fully man and fully God.

  139. But at the very least, my guess,

  140. Judas knew that this was a special man,

  141. maybe a prophet.

  142. So it is very, very remarkable

  143. that twice Jesus warns the group,

  144. with Judas in earshot,

  145. and warns them that the one who will betray him

  146. will become a son of perdition,

  147. will be damned.

  148. That there will be no redemption for the one who betrays

  149. the Son of God.

  150. You'd think that he would

  151. maybe,

  152. maybe

  153. repent,

  154. have a dark night of the soul,

  155. and come to Jesus' aid,

  156. or maybe use now his position

  157. as a betrayer

  158. to upend the Pharisees,

  159. and the chief priests,

  160. and the scribes.

  161. Like, if this was a mini-series,

  162. we didn't know the end from the beginning,

  163. we were just kind of watching it episode by episode.

  164. Verse 42 ends,

  165. Jesus says,

  166. Rise, let us be going,

  167. see my betrayers at hand.

  168. End scene,

  169. roll credits,

  170. what's going to happen in the next episode?

  171. Is Judas going to follow through with it?

  172. Or will he kind of come to his senses,

  173. and be the guy to figure things out,

  174. and save the day?

  175. But no.

  176. Time and again,

  177. he has opportunities

  178. to fix what he has done,

  179. to repent,

  180. but he does not do it.

  181. Judas

  182. did not want to believe the truth

  183. that Jesus was heading to the cross,

  184. and was worthy

  185. of having expensive ointment

  186. poured over him

  187. in preparation for burial.

  188. Do you remember,

  189. a few weeks back,

  190. Jesus is reclining

  191. at Simon the leper's house,

  192. and this woman comes,

  193. she's unnamed,

  194. but she breaks open

  195. this bottle

  196. of expensive ointment,

  197. a year's wages,

  198. and pours it over him,

  199. and the disciples

  200. become indignant.

  201. What a waste of money.

  202. And it's clear that

  203. Judas here

  204. didn't hear

  205. what Jesus was saying.

  206. I'm going to the cross,

  207. I'm worthy of this,

  208. because I'm going to die

  209. for the sins of many.

  210. This woman,

  211. she's doing a beautiful thing,

  212. don't scold her.

  213. Judas

  214. becomes entrenched

  215. in the lies that he believes.

  216. We're not sure

  217. what the lies are,

  218. but they're not the truth.

  219. He doesn't believe Jesus,

  220. doesn't take Jesus

  221. at his word,

  222. and he becomes entrenched

  223. in his beliefs.

  224. He believes the lie.

  225. He allows the offense

  226. that he feels

  227. at the act of this

  228. kind of huge,

  229. huge blessing

  230. of this unnamed woman

  231. to Jesus,

  232. trump all of the good

  233. and the true

  234. and the beautiful

  235. that he saw Jesus

  236. do during his ministry.

  237. And he continued on

  238. in his plan of betrayal.

  239. He's nursing the lie.

  240. Nursing the lie.

  241. Notice here

  242. that Judas also mocks Jesus.

  243. He says,

  244. the one that I'm going to kiss,

  245. verse 45,

  246. and he went up to Jesus

  247. at once and said,

  248. Rabbi,

  249. Rabbi,

  250. and he kissed him.

  251. I mean,

  252. we could say

  253. in our minds,

  254. maybe Rabbi,

  255. like a handshake

  256. or like a greeting,

  257. but this is,

  258. this is 2,000 years ago

  259. in the Middle East.

  260. This is a man

  261. who is showing,

  262. trying to show,

  263. pretending to show

  264. great love

  265. and affection

  266. and deference

  267. to his leader.

  268. This is a sign

  269. of just love,

  270. but it's empty,

  271. and he is doing it

  272. in a mocking way.

  273. Rabbi,

  274. how are you?

  275. The best rabbi,

  276. the best teacher,

  277. embraces him,

  278. touches him,

  279. kisses him,

  280. a sign of intimacy,

  281. a sign of affection.

  282. But there's a mob behind him

  283. with clubs and swords

  284. at night.

  285. He doesn't believe

  286. anything he is saying.

  287. He is mocking Jesus.

  288. Another example

  289. of an embracing

  290. of the lies

  291. because you don't mock

  292. the rabbi of rabbis,

  293. the teacher of teachers,

  294. the leader of leaders,

  295. the king of kings.

  296. If you do that,

  297. you believe

  298. in something different,

  299. a falsehood,

  300. a lie.

  301. What we see with Judas

  302. is a man

  303. who is a betrayer

  304. and he is a mocker

  305. and who is eyeballs deep

  306. in deceit

  307. and self-deception.

  308. I mean,

  309. quite the character.

  310. Let's take a look

  311. at the religious leaders.

  312. Notice verse 43 as well.

  313. The second part of it.

  314. And Judas came,

  315. one of the twelve,

  316. and with him a crowd

  317. with swords and clubs

  318. from the chief priests,

  319. the scribes,

  320. and the elders.

  321. These religious leaders,

  322. they were kind of

  323. the top tier of society.

  324. The people that

  325. were the trusted authority

  326. on religion,

  327. on civil life,

  328. on social life,

  329. everything that it was

  330. to be an upstanding Israelite

  331. in the first century.

  332. These were the ones

  333. that were supposed

  334. to lead the people,

  335. to know the truth,

  336. and to lead the people

  337. into truth.

  338. Except,

  339. from the beginning,

  340. they too have been

  341. nursing a hatred

  342. towards the truth,

  343. that Jesus is

  344. the one who

  345. is the Messiah,

  346. that he has come

  347. to upend

  348. false religion,

  349. and at least,

  350. just turn this down.

  351. Anyways,

  352. there's a buzzing.

  353. I don't know if it's

  354. distracting, folks.

  355. Sorry about that.

  356. But at least

  357. since chapter 3,

  358. they have been

  359. colluding with one another

  360. to destroy Jesus.

  361. At least since chapter 3.

  362. And it's not like

  363. Jesus did stuff

  364. or claimed things

  365. in private.

  366. He was very public

  367. about his ministry.

  368. They had many opportunities

  369. to have their

  370. false piety,

  371. false religion,

  372. false beliefs

  373. be confronted

  374. with the truth.

  375. But time and again,

  376. they chose to believe

  377. the lie.

  378. They entrenched

  379. themselves.

  380. This is the thing

  381. with the truth.

  382. The truth

  383. is the truth.

  384. The truth

  385. stands alone.

  386. It is on a foundation

  387. that can't be moved.

  388. But lies

  389. require

  390. this

  391. web

  392. of

  393. other lies

  394. and other

  395. deceits

  396. and

  397. falsities

  398. and

  399. cover-ups

  400. and

  401. dust under the carpets

  402. and all of a sudden

  403. this big structure

  404. emerges

  405. and you take

  406. one away

  407. and the whole

  408. thing begins

  409. to topple.

  410. Jesus is the truth

  411. and he is proclaiming

  412. the truth

  413. and it is

  414. offensive

  415. and it is

  416. threatening

  417. to the lie

  418. of the

  419. religious

  420. and social

  421. leaders.

  422. The thing is

  423. truth by virtue

  424. of being the truth

  425. always exposes

  426. lies.

  427. It just always does.

  428. It has to.

  429. There is no

  430. idea of

  431. your truth

  432. versus my truth

  433. if the truths

  434. are incongruent.

  435. You can't

  436. it's silly

  437. to somehow

  438. think that

  439. two opposing

  440. views can be

  441. somehow

  442. congruent

  443. when they are

  444. opposite.

  445. There's truth

  446. and there's not

  447. truth.

  448. There's lies

  449. and then there's lies

  450. and then there's lies

  451. and lies and lies

  452. but only one truth.

  453. You remember

  454. when Jesus

  455. goes to the temple

  456. he pronounces

  457. these indictments

  458. against it

  459. but really

  460. to the religious

  461. establishment.

  462. He says that

  463. the temple

  464. has been made

  465. a den of robbers.

  466. This is back

  467. in chapter 11

  468. and he exposes

  469. false religion.

  470. Why?

  471. Because it is

  472. rooted in lies.

  473. So how are these

  474. religious leaders

  475. trying to suppress

  476. the truth?

  477. On one hand

  478. they treat Jesus

  479. as a revolutionary

  480. coming with swords

  481. and clubs.

  482. They're treating him

  483. the same way

  484. as the Romans

  485. would treat

  486. a zealot

  487. an insurrectionist

  488. a revolutionary.

  489. I mean

  490. in our translation

  491. it's used as robbers

  492. that can work as well

  493. but there's more

  494. to it than that.

  495. They are treating him

  496. as though

  497. the kingdom

  498. that he has proclaimed

  499. is going to be

  500. instituted

  501. by sword and club

  502. like every other

  503. kingdom

  504. that has come before it.

  505. but not the kingdom

  506. of God.

  507. And just on an aside

  508. this isn't

  509. this isn't

  510. this is bonus material

  511. I guess

  512. on an aside

  513. the kingdom of God

  514. never comes

  515. by way of force.

  516. And whenever

  517. there is a show

  518. of force

  519. in the name of God

  520. by whatever

  521. official sources

  522. you know

  523. proclaim it

  524. it isn't

  525. the way of God

  526. because the way of God

  527. is always

  528. to bring

  529. his kingdom

  530. on earth

  531. as it is

  532. in heaven

  533. where there

  534. is perfect

  535. peace.

  536. That's not to say

  537. that God

  538. can't use

  539. horrendous

  540. decisions

  541. by

  542. by really

  543. really bad

  544. people

  545. and leaders

  546. to somehow

  547. achieve his

  548. ends

  549. but it's never

  550. God's will

  551. to have

  552. some kind of

  553. holy war

  554. against evil

  555. people

  556. as a way

  557. of extending

  558. his kingdom.

  559. So

  560. we'll

  561. get back

  562. I mean

  563. we got off

  564. on an exit

  565. let's get back

  566. on the highway

  567. here.

  568. So

  569. Jesus

  570. he

  571. sorry

  572. the religious

  573. leaders

  574. are trying

  575. to suppress

  576. the truth

  577. by treating

  578. Jesus

  579. as

  580. a

  581. insurrectionist

  582. as a

  583. revolutionary

  584. in essence

  585. perpetuating

  586. this false

  587. narrative

  588. that Jesus

  589. is violent

  590. and he's not.

  591. On the other

  592. hand

  593. they oppose him

  594. at night

  595. while the city

  596. sleeps

  597. because their

  598. accusations

  599. aren't rooted

  600. in truth

  601. and can't

  602. hold up

  603. under

  604. any kind

  605. of scrutiny.

  606. Notice that

  607. Jesus

  608. in next

  609. week's text

  610. will be

  611. in front

  612. of the

  613. council

  614. of the

  615. high priest

  616. and they

  617. are scrambling

  618. trying to

  619. figure out

  620. some kind

  621. of

  622. charge

  623. to lay

  624. upon him

  625. that will

  626. stick

  627. and they

  628. can't

  629. find any.

  630. But consider

  631. Jesus'

  632. words here

  633. starting in

  634. verse 46

  635. this is what

  636. Jesus says

  637. they laid

  638. hands on

  639. him and

  640. seized him

  641. but one

  642. of those

  643. who stood

  644. by drew

  645. his sword

  646. and struck

  647. his servant

  648. of the high

  649. priest and

  650. cut off

  651. his ear

  652. and Jesus

  653. said to

  654. them

  655. have you

  656. come out

  657. as against

  658. a robber

  659. or as

  660. against a

  661. revolutionary

  662. with swords

  663. and clubs

  664. to capture

  665. me

  666. day after

  667. day I

  668. was with

  669. you in

  670. the temple

  671. teaching

  672. and you

  673. did not

  674. seize me

  675. but let

  676. the scriptures

  677. be fulfilled

  678. let the

  679. scriptures

  680. be fulfilled

  681. Jesus

  682. confronted

  683. them with

  684. truth

  685. all day

  686. for a

  687. long period

  688. of time

  689. he confronts

  690. them in

  691. day in

  692. public

  693. they confront

  694. him with

  695. lies

  696. in private

  697. at night

  698. it's a big

  699. difference between

  700. these two

  701. parties

  702. Judas

  703. given to

  704. lies

  705. entrenched

  706. in lies

  707. the religious

  708. leaders

  709. they were

  710. supposed to

  711. be in a

  712. sense the

  713. stewards of

  714. truth

  715. entrenched

  716. in lies

  717. how about

  718. you and

  719. I

  720. we have

  721. considered

  722. Judas and

  723. the religious

  724. leaders

  725. we've looked

  726. at betrayal

  727. and mockery

  728. deceit

  729. lies

  730. but how

  731. about us

  732. I mean

  733. think of an

  734. experience that

  735. you have had

  736. with betrayal

  737. and mockery

  738. and lying

  739. I mean

  740. we live in a

  741. broken world

  742. you've

  743. I'm sure

  744. experienced

  745. things

  746. those of

  747. as the

  748. prayer book

  749. calls of

  750. more riper

  751. years

  752. have experienced

  753. more

  754. than us

  755. who are

  756. not as

  757. ripe

  758. but

  759. nevertheless

  760. what

  761. comes to

  762. mind

  763. you know

  764. I'm sure

  765. some of

  766. us have

  767. gone through

  768. some really

  769. tough things

  770. have been

  771. betrayed

  772. and mocked

  773. have been

  774. hurt

  775. have been

  776. misrepresented

  777. and there's

  778. something about

  779. Jesus

  780. and only

  781. Jesus

  782. where we

  783. can go

  784. to him

  785. and he

  786. can say

  787. truly say

  788. I know

  789. exactly

  790. what you've

  791. been

  792. through

  793. I can

  794. sympathize

  795. with you

  796. but

  797. how many

  798. of us

  799. when I

  800. ask the

  801. question

  802. about

  803. your

  804. experience

  805. with

  806. betrayal

  807. and mockery

  808. and lying

  809. thought of

  810. yourself

  811. as the

  812. victim

  813. but not

  814. as the

  815. victimizer

  816. not as

  817. the one

  818. who

  819. is

  820. the

  821. betrayer

  822. is

  823. the

  824. liar

  825. is

  826. the

  827. mocker

  828. I know

  829. for myself

  830. when I

  831. was going

  832. through this

  833. initially

  834. earlier in

  835. the week

  836. I was just

  837. like that

  838. Judas

  839. he is

  840. a piece

  841. of work

  842. like

  843. I would

  844. never be

  845. like him

  846. at least

  847. that was

  848. my

  849. attitude

  850. but

  851. the

  852. reality

  853. is

  854. we

  855. although

  856. are

  857. on one

  858. hand

  859. victims

  860. at times

  861. we

  862. are also

  863. guilty

  864. of

  865. living

  866. lies

  867. and

  868. perpetuating

  869. them

  870. mocking

  871. people

  872. betraying

  873. people

  874. lying

  875. to

  876. people

  877. the

  878. great

  879. danger

  880. of

  881. reading

  882. a

  883. text

  884. like

  885. this

  886. like

  887. I

  888. mentioned

  889. is

  890. that

  891. we

  892. deceive

  893. ourselves

  894. into

  895. thinking

  896. we

  897. are

  898. not

  899. immune

  900. to

  901. deception

  902. or

  903. certainly

  904. aren't

  905. deceivers

  906. ourselves

  907. but a

  908. text

  909. like

  910. this

  911. what

  912. does

  913. it

  914. do

  915. it

  916. reminds

  917. us

  918. of

  919. our

  920. default

  921. setting

  922. and our

  923. default

  924. setting

  925. is

  926. that

  927. we

  928. are

  929. given

  930. to

  931. lies

  932. before

  933. we

  934. are

  935. given

  936. to

  937. truth

  938. that's

  939. our

  940. default

  941. setting

  942. the

  943. currency

  944. that

  945. we

  946. deal

  947. in

  948. is

  949. cover

  950. up

  951. in

  952. self

  953. justification

  954. downplaying

  955. our

  956. sin

  957. and

  958. up

  959. playing

  960. our

  961. virtue

  962. is

  963. up

  964. playing

  965. the

  966. right

  967. thing

  968. to

  969. say

  970. is

  971. to

  972. talk

  973. about

  974. how

  975. virtuous

  976. we

  977. are

  978. but

  979. because

  980. the

  981. scriptures

  982. are

  983. true

  984. they

  985. contain

  986. truth

  987. and

  988. are

  989. themselves

  990. breathed

  991. out

  992. by

  993. truth

  994. himself

  995. they

  996. confront

  997. the

  998. lies

  999. that

  1000. we

  1001. live

  1002. we

  1003. have

  1004. an

  1005. opportunity

  1006. to

  1007. either

  1008. continue

  1009. in

  1010. that

  1011. or

  1012. do

  1013. the

  1014. hard

  1015. work

  1016. in

  1017. a

  1018. sense

  1019. letting

  1020. God

  1021. bring

  1022. truth

  1023. to

  1024. the

  1025. areas

  1026. where

  1027. we

  1028. have

  1029. lied

  1030. and we

  1031. have

  1032. been

  1033. given

  1034. to

  1035. lies

  1036. but

  1037. it's

  1038. very

  1039. important

  1040. that

  1041. we

  1042. know

  1043. that

  1044. our

  1045. hearts

  1046. are

  1047. shown

  1048. to be

  1049. in need

  1050. of

  1051. great

  1052. healing

  1053. jeremiah

  1054. jeremiah

  1055. 17

  1056. 9

  1057. says

  1058. the

  1059. heart

  1060. is

  1061. deceitful

  1062. above

  1063. all

  1064. things

  1065. and

  1066. desperately

  1067. sick

  1068. who

  1069. can

  1070. understand

  1071. it

  1072. you

  1073. know

  1074. the

  1075. great

  1076. irony

  1077. with

  1078. judas

  1079. and

  1080. the

  1081. religious

  1082. leaders

  1083. is

  1084. that

  1085. they

  1086. are

  1087. breaking

  1088. their

  1089. own

  1090. values

  1091. and

  1092. laws

  1093. in

  1094. order

  1095. to

  1096. maintain

  1097. their

  1098. lie

  1099. they're

  1100. not

  1101. even

  1102. true

  1103. to

  1104. themselves

  1105. in

  1106. their

  1107. maintenance

  1108. of

  1109. a

  1110. lie

  1111. that

  1112. they

  1113. try

  1114. to

  1115. perpetuate

  1116. because

  1117. in

  1118. the

  1119. end

  1120. judas

  1121. gets

  1122. so

  1123. bent

  1124. genuinely

  1125. bent

  1126. and

  1127. angry

  1128. at

  1129. jesus

  1130. for

  1131. wastefulness

  1132. and

  1133. in a

  1134. sense

  1135. treating

  1136. money

  1137. poorly

  1138. and

  1139. he's

  1140. taking

  1141. a

  1142. bribe

  1143. himself

  1144. the

  1145. religious

  1146. leaders

  1147. it's

  1148. not

  1149. very

  1150. clear

  1151. here

  1152. in

  1153. the

  1154. text

  1155. but

  1156. they

  1157. are

  1158. breaking

  1159. the

  1160. sabbath

  1161. to

  1162. arrest

  1163. jesus

  1164. big

  1165. no

  1166. no

  1167. even

  1168. judas

  1169. and

  1170. the

  1171. religious

  1172. leaders

  1173. to

  1174. perpetuate

  1175. a

  1176. lie

  1177. will

  1178. break

  1179. their

  1180. own

  1181. values

  1182. and

  1183. laws

  1184. their

  1185. lie

  1186. in

  1187. order

  1188. to

  1189. survive

  1190. requires

  1191. them

  1192. to

  1193. compromise

  1194. their

  1195. very

  1196. essence

  1197. the

  1198. things

  1199. that

  1200. they

  1201. hold

  1202. dear

  1203. so

  1204. it's

  1205. very

  1206. clear

  1207. lies

  1208. have

  1209. an

  1210. insatiable

  1211. appetite

  1212. they

  1213. can't

  1214. be

  1215. satisfied

  1216. they

  1217. can't

  1218. it's

  1219. not

  1220. enough

  1221. to say

  1222. one

  1223. lie

  1224. and be

  1225. done

  1226. with

  1227. it

  1228. it

  1229. comes

  1230. back

  1231. and

  1232. it

  1233. will

  1234. consume

  1235. until

  1236. nothing

  1237. remains

  1238. but a

  1239. hollowed

  1240. shell

  1241. this

  1242. is

  1243. our

  1244. default

  1245. setting

  1246. some

  1247. are

  1248. less

  1249. given

  1250. to

  1251. it

  1252. than

  1253. others

  1254. but

  1255. be

  1256. honest

  1257. with

  1258. yourself

  1259. it's

  1260. your

  1261. default

  1262. setting

  1263. that's

  1264. why

  1265. Christ

  1266. comes

  1267. and he

  1268. comes

  1269. to save

  1270. us

  1271. from our

  1272. sin

  1273. absolutely

  1274. to

  1275. rescue

  1276. us

  1277. from

  1278. evil

  1279. absolutely

  1280. but

  1281. he

  1282. also

  1283. comes

  1284. to

  1285. transfer

  1286. our

  1287. citizenship

  1288. from

  1289. the

  1290. kingdom

  1291. of

  1292. lies

  1293. to

  1294. the

  1295. kingdom

  1296. of

  1297. truth

  1298. that's

  1299. what

  1300. he

  1301. does

  1302. he

  1303. is

  1304. truth

  1305. himself

  1306. but

  1307. what

  1308. happens

  1309. when

  1310. after

  1311. tasting

  1312. the

  1313. goodness

  1314. of

  1315. God

  1316. and

  1317. knowing

  1318. truth

  1319. and

  1320. having

  1321. light

  1322. shine

  1323. into

  1324. darkness

  1325. our

  1326. citizenship

  1327. is

  1328. transferred

  1329. from

  1330. the

  1331. kingdom

  1332. of

  1333. lies

  1334. so to

  1335. speak

  1336. to

  1337. the

  1338. kingdom

  1339. of

  1340. truth

  1341. what

  1342. happens

  1343. when

  1344. we

  1345. continue

  1346. to

  1347. lie

  1348. and

  1349. be

  1350. given

  1351. to

  1352. deceit

  1353. as

  1354. Christians

  1355. as

  1356. mature

  1357. Christians

  1358. who have

  1359. been in

  1360. this

  1361. thing

  1362. for

  1363. decades

  1364. what

  1365. do

  1366. we

  1367. do

  1368. is

  1369. it

  1370. treason

  1371. is

  1372. there

  1373. hope

  1374. for

  1375. us

  1376. seems

  1377. there's

  1378. no

  1379. hope

  1380. for

  1381. Judas

  1382. is

  1383. there

  1384. hope

  1385. for

  1386. us

  1387. what

  1388. happens

  1389. if

  1390. we

  1391. are

  1392. all

  1393. if

  1394. we

  1395. are

  1396. still

  1397. given

  1398. to

  1399. lies

  1400. being

  1401. deceived

  1402. and

  1403. deceiving

  1404. after

  1405. we

  1406. are

  1407. Christians

  1408. is

  1409. there

  1410. hope

  1411. look

  1412. with

  1413. me

  1414. at

  1415. verses

  1416. 50

  1417. to

  1418. 52

  1419. well

  1420. let's

  1421. go back

  1422. to

  1423. verse

  1424. 49

  1425. Jesus

  1426. says

  1427. day

  1428. after

  1429. day

  1430. I

  1431. was

  1432. with

  1433. you

  1434. in

  1435. the

  1436. temple

  1437. teaching

  1438. you

  1439. teaching

  1440. and you

  1441. did

  1442. not

  1443. seize

  1444. me

  1445. but

  1446. let

  1447. the

  1448. scriptures

  1449. be

  1450. fulfilled

  1451. verse

  1452. 50

  1453. and

  1454. they

  1455. all

  1456. fled

  1457. left

  1458. him

  1459. and

  1460. fled

  1461. and

  1462. a

  1463. young

  1464. man

  1465. followed

  1466. him

  1467. with

  1468. nothing

  1469. but a

  1470. linen

  1471. cloth

  1472. about

  1473. his

  1474. body

  1475. and

  1476. they

  1477. seized

  1478. him

  1479. but

  1480. he

  1481. left

  1482. the

  1483. linen

  1484. cloth

  1485. and ran

  1486. away

  1487. naked

  1488. L

  1489. the

  1490. mother

  1491. other

  1492. my

  1493. his

  1494. expander

  1495. is

  1496. doing

  1497. this

  1498. this

  1499. this

  1500. morning

  1501. for us

  1502. what I

  1503. want us

  1504. to see

  1505. along

  1506. with

  1507. all

  1508. of

  1509. Jesus'

  1510. followers

1511. is this young man, everybody all fled.

  1512. Everybody fled.

1513. Everybody ran, all of them.

1514. It's emphatic in the original language.

1515. And it's emphasized because they all drank the cup

1516. at the Last Supper, the disciples did.

1517. They all pledged unwavering allegiance to Jesus

1518. and yet they all fled.

1519. And I think it's very instructive for us to see

1520. that even the most seasoned Christians can compromise.

1521. I can run from Christ.

1522. It's really hard to live a life year after year,

1523. moment after moment, day after day,

1524. like year after year, continue.

1525. Your whole life in truth, you're bound to slip up.

  1526. You're bound to flee.

1527. I think we see the emphatic all

1528. because Mark and really God wants us to see

  1529. that that includes us.

1530. We are bound to sin.

1531. We are bound to fall back into our old citizenship.

1532. We are tempted to embrace a false savior

1533. after we have encountered the true one.

1534. We are all susceptible to believing lies

1535. even though we have known the truth.

  1536. And the fact is,

1537. we are citizens of the kingdom of God,

  1538. the kingdom of truth,

1539. but that kingdom has yet to come in its fulfillment.

1540. And this is a wonderful kind of insight into the scriptures

1541. is that the kingdom is now,

  1542. in the moment,

  1543. it is here,

  1544. Jesus has come,

1545. but it's also yet to come,

  1546. in its fullness.

1547. So we live in this kind of in-between time

1548. where we are citizens of heaven,

  1549. the kingdom of God,

  1550. but here on earth,

1551. where we're still also part of the kingdom of this world.

  1552. So we struggle.

1553. That's the reality of it.

  1554. We struggle.

  1555. So when,

  1556. not if,

  1557. but when we fail,

  1558. when we flee,

  1559. we can,

  1560. by God's spirit,

  1561. run back to him

  1562. for help,

1563. to turn back to him,

1564. to flee the other way,

1565. to flee the lie into the truth,

  1566. to truth himself,

1567. and trust that he will forgive

1568. and that he won't revoke our citizenship.

1569. Jesus says in the second part of verse 49,

  1570. what does he say?

1571. But let the scriptures be fulfilled.

1572. And it's specifically there talking about him being taken away

  1573. as essentially a robber,

1574. even though he is innocent.

  1575. It's a reference to Zechariah 13,

    Zechariah 13:7

  1576. verse 7.

  1577. It says this,

  1578. Awake, O sword,

  1579. against my shepherd,

1580. against the man who stands next to me,

1581. declares the Lord of hosts,

1582. strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.

  1583. Jesus quotes this earlier.

1584. I will turn my hand against the little ones.

1585. It also is a reference to the end of Isaiah,

  1586. Isaiah chapter 53,

    Isaiah 53:12

  1587. verse 12.

  1588. And it says,

1589. I'll just read the one part,

  1590. And he,

1591. that is the servant of the Lord,

  1592. Jesus,

1593. was numbered with the transgressors.

  1594. So,

  1595. when Jesus says,

1596. let the scriptures be fulfilled,

  1597. he's specifically,

  1598. in the context,

  1599. talking about

  1600. his arrest.

1601. They're both fulfilled in his arrest.

  1602. But in a sense,

1603. it's a statement that God's word is always true.

1604. That it always comes to pass.

  1605. It is always right.

  1606. It is always trustworthy.

1607. We can trust in God and in his promises.

1608. We can trust that he can use even the most heinous of lies to achieve his truth.

1609. We can trust in his ultimate victory.

1610. We can trust that he will not leave us or forsake us.

1611. We can trust that if we confess our sins,

1612. he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness.

1613. That when we turn to him,

1614. he is more willing to forgive us than we are to run to him.

  1615. Like,

1616. all of these promises in God's word,

1617. if it's fulfilled in just this little bit in verse 49b,

1618. we can be sure that all of his word is true.

1619. Because he is a source of truth.

  1620. He knows our weakness.

1621. And yet he welcomes us all the same.

  1622. I'll end with a couple thoughts.

  1623. Lies cannot continue indefinitely.

1624. Because God created the cosmos,

  1625. the earth,

1626. everything and all of creation

  1627. on truth.

1628. And eventually lies crumble under themselves

1629. because they have no foundation.

  1630. But God's foundation is,

  1631. in a sense,

1632. baked right into our very existence.

1633. Truth is how he created everything.

1634. Chernobyl ends with Valery Legazov defying the gag order

1635. by recording his experiences so that the world can know what happens.

1636. And he says this at the end.

1637. What is the cost of lies?

1638. It's not that we'll mistake them for the truth.

1639. The real danger is that if we hear enough lies,

1640. then we no longer recognize the truth at all.

1641. What can we do then?

1642. What else is left but to abandon even the hope of truth

1643. and content ourselves instead with stories?

  1644. He emphasizes that, stories.

1645. In these stories, it doesn't matter who the heroes are.

1646. All we want to know is who is to blame.

1647. Really powerful ending to this mini-series.

  1648. Jesus Christ, truth himself,

1649. he frees us from the prison of fear

1650. that leads to the lies

1651. and the life of lies

1652. and our default setting of lies.

1653. He frees us from there.

1654. He frees us so that we can live in the truth.

1655. And what can stop someone who is truly free,

1656. who is not afraid of the consequences of telling the truth?

1657. Who can stop that person?

1658. I mean, you could physically stop them,

1659. arrest them, throw them into jail.

1660. They can rot and die.

1661. But the truth, in the end, is what they have

1662. and it can't be taken from them.

1663. There is a boldness that comes with being a truth teller

1664. because we are empowered by the very one

  1665. who is truth himself.

1666. Friends, let us trust that Christ himself

1667. is the greater truth teller.

  1668. That there isn't a better version of a self-help,

  1669. this or that,

1670. or a narrative that just seems like it would work better for us.

1671. Let us not fall into that kind of lie.

1672. It might present that way,

1673. but truly, it is not that way.

1674. Let us trust in the incorruptible one,

1675. the one that knows all,

1676. even the web of lies that we may find ourselves in today.

1677. And we might be in a web of lies.

1678. We might have done a really good job of lying

  1679. for the last, I don't know, 15, 20 years.

  1680. Lying since high school,

  1681. something that happened,

  1682. whatever it may be,

  1683. and you're carrying that.

1684. You don't think about it every day,

  1685. but it's back there.

1686. It gnaws on the back of your head.

1687. Christ has come to free us from that.

  1688. Freedom.

  1689. To live in truth.

1690. That is what Christ has done on the cross.

1691. That is what he has won.

1692. That is his victory that we get to share in.

1693. So I'll just say this.

  1694. Lent starts on Wednesday.

1695. Ash Wednesday is this upcoming Wednesday.

  1696. It'll be here at 730.

1697. There's a shameless plug for coming to Ash Wednesday

1698. if you can make it.

1699. But Lent is a sweet season where we can be honest.

1700. Honest with ourselves before God

1701. and prepare as we journey towards the cross

1702. as Christ went to the cross.

1703. And Lent, in a sense, isn't easy

1704. because it causes us to take a look at ourselves

1705. and ask God to reveal the junk and the sin

1706. and the deceit and the lies in our own lives.

  1707. But what's the result?

  1708. I mean, hopefully,

1709. to look at Christ and to know his truth

1710. and to live in that,

  1711. to be free people.

  1712. To be free people.

1713. You don't have to come to Ash Wednesday

1714. to confess your sins to the Lord

1715. or to look to him for freedom.

1716. But it is a fine way to do it.

1717. But as we approach Lent,

1718. let us ask the Lord to help us

1719. to be honest with ourselves

  1720. about our sin,

1721. about our propensity to deceive.

1722. And then may we be free

  1723. to live in truth,

  1724. to live towards truth,

1725. to embrace the true one.

  1726. Let's pray.

  1727. Heavenly Father,

1728. we thank you that your example here

1729. of how lies don't win

  1730. and how truth wins

1731. and how even lies you use

  1732. to upend lies.

1733. You use death to upend death.

1734. That the truth will always come to pass.

1735. Lord, let us be honest with ourselves.

1736. Let us first be truthful with ourselves

  1737. about who we are

  1738. and who you are.

1739. Lord, let us not deceive ourselves any longer.

1740. Help us by your Holy Spirit

1741. to not just know the truth

1742. but to act upon it.

  1743. Lord, we thank you

  1744. for the second chances

  1745. and the 80th chances

  1746. and the 1,042nd chances

  1747. that you give us.

1748. and Lord, help us to embrace it.

1749. And Lord, as we continue on our service,

1750. we ask that you bless us,

1751. continue to bless the kids downstairs.

1752. We pray all these things in Christ's name.

  1753. Amen.
