  1. Father in heaven, we come before you this morning about to open your word to a very difficult passage.

  2. In fact, the remainder of Mark's account of Jesus' earthly ministry, the rest of it is very difficult.

  3. But Lord, in it, well, number one, you gave it to us so that we could read it.

  4. And in it, there are many instructions on how to live like Christ.

  5. But more than that, it is an account of Christ himself that we get to behold him.

  6. And Lord, beholding him, we are changed.

  7. Help us this morning to behold Christ for who he truly is.

  8. And by your Holy Spirit, we ask that we would be changed.

  9. And we pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  10. If you have your Bibles, we'll be going through the portion of Mark's Gospel that I read, Mark 15, 1 to 15.

  11. By the way, if you want to grab a Bible at the back, please feel free to do so.

  12. Before we get into the text, just a bit of a story.

  13. In 1970, a 17-year-old teen from Winnipeg named David Milgard was sentenced to life in prison

  14. for the rape and murder of Gail Miller that took place in Saskatoon.

  15. Milgard, he was traveling across the prairies, and he denied that he committed the crime.

  16. But under duress from police who were themselves pressured to solve the crime,

  17. David Milgard's friends changed their testimony, which led to his wrongful conviction.

  18. And he was incarcerated for 22, just over 22 years, until DNA evidence exonerated him, and he was released.

  19. David Milgard served 22-plus years for a crime he didn't commit.

  20. And some six years or so later, maybe seven years later,

  21. he settled with the Saskatchewan government and the federal government for $10 million.

  22. $10 million for 22 years.

  23. Now, if you haven't heard of David Milgard before, that's okay.

  24. You might have heard of him if you're a fan of the Tragically Hip.

  25. The song Wheat Kings references him.

  26. But it's a Canadian story, and it's a terrible blot on our recent history.

  27. It's an injustice of the first degree.

  28. A terrible stain on the justice system.

  29. There's something incredibly unsettling about injustice, isn't there?

  30. When justice is expected, but injustice is what we get.

  31. Justice, and those tasked with safeguarding it,

  32. is very foundational to an orderly, safe, and stable society.

  33. Take away justice, things unravel awfully quick.

  34. Society begins to crumble.

  35. In our text this morning, Jesus will be subjected to the second unjust trial in 12 hours.

  36. He is before Pilate.

  37. He's already had the ridiculous charge levied against him that he was a blasphemer.

  38. It was drummed up by the chief priests and the whole council of the Sanhedrin.

  39. And now, he's quite literally dragged in front of Pontius Pilate and accused again.

  40. And they are seeking, not life in prison, not 22 years,

  41. but the death penalty and crucifixion at that.

  42. Jesus will be unjustly condemned, ultimately.

  43. We'll see in the weeks to come leading up to Easter,

  44. as we wrap up our time in Mark's Gospel.

  45. And we will see this morning the conviction of Jesus,

  46. which will be the most unjust act in human history.

  47. The sinless, perfect Savior,

  48. who is condemned to death for something that he 100% did not do.

  49. So,

  50. how does this unjust sentence go down?

  51. And what does it teach us about human nature?

  52. And what injustice does to us and to our society?

  53. So, we'll look at this scene,

  54. and we'll go through the whole text,

  55. but what we're going to do is we're going to break it up

  56. in terms of specific characters

  57. and taking a look,

  58. doing a bit of a deep dive in three characters that are featured here.

  59. The first one,

  60. I'd say character as it's singular,

  61. but really the chief priests.

  62. We're going to take a look at them.

  63. The second group,

  64. or the second person rather,

  65. so that's the first group.

  66. The second person is Pontius Pilate.

  67. And the third and final one is Jesus himself.

  68. So, let's get right into it.

  69. We'll take a look at the chief priests.

  70. The chief priests,

  71. they have been engaged in

  72. a plot to destroy Jesus

  73. all the way back from Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  74. Jesus,

  75. he is proclaiming the gospel,

  76. he is healing the sick,

  77. he is casting out demons,

  78. he's doing miracles,

  79. and people are being

  80. blessed

  81. blessed

  82. in ways that they've never been blessed before.

  83. And by doing that,

  84. Jesus is

  85. showing

  86. the religious establishment

  87. to be wanting.

  88. And since chapter 3,

  89. they have hated him.

  90. And it says

  91. in chapter 3,

  92. verse 6,

  93. that they sought

  94. a way to destroy Jesus.

  95. They have been plotting

  96. and scheming

  97. since chapter 3.

  98. And here,

  99. we're going to see

  100. three ways

  101. they engage in

  102. injustice.

  103. The first way

  104. is their strategy.

  105. they're engaged

  106. in a very

  107. unjust strategy

  108. to get Jesus

  109. eliminated.

  110. The second is

  111. they will engage

  112. in deception.

  113. And the third,

  114. we'll see their motivation

  115. in all of this,

  116. which is envy.

  117. So if you have your Bible,

  118. we're going to look

  119. at verses 1 to 5

  120. of chapter 15.

  121. It says this,

  122. And as soon as it was morning,

  123. the chief priests

  124. held a consultation

  125. with the elders

  126. and scribes

  127. and the whole council

  128. and they bound Jesus

  129. and led him away

  130. and delivered him

  131. over to Pilate.

  132. I'll pause really quickly there.

  133. The chief priests,

  134. I mean,

  135. they're incredibly calculated

  136. with their strategy

  137. and their plan

  138. to destroy Jesus.

  139. Like I mentioned,

  140. it's a culmination

  141. of some three years

  142. of planning

  143. Jesus' downfall.

  144. They have found

  145. a willing accomplice

  146. in Judas,

  147. Jesus' own disciple

  148. who betrays him

  149. and they take him away.

  150. And notice with me

  151. the strategy

  152. in verse 1.

  153. They held a consultation

  154. first thing in the morning.

  155. This is, by the way,

  156. on top of what happens

  157. at the end of chapter 14

  158. where Jesus is,

  159. he is before the whole council,

  160. a bit of a rump court.

  161. We looked at that last week.

  162. And he has the charges

  163. levied at him.

  164. They don't stick.

  165. And finally,

  166. he's asked a question

  167. about his identity

  168. and he answers

  169. in the affirmative.

  170. The chief priest

  171. rips his garment

  172. and he cries out blasphemy.

  173. Death penalty it is.

  174. But in the morning,

  175. it continues.

  176. Because you have to understand,

  177. at this point,

  178. the sovereign power

  179. is not the Sanhedrin.

  180. It's not the religious elites.

  181. It's Rome.

  182. Judea is a colony of Rome

  183. and they do not have

  184. the ability

  185. to sentence Jesus

  186. to death,

  187. but specifically

  188. a crucifixion.

  189. Sure,

  190. maybe they could just

  191. have a hired hand

  192. to take Jesus out.

  193. I mean,

  194. they've had three years

  195. to do that.

  196. But they want it

  197. to be crucifixion.

  198. Because crucifixion is public

  199. and it's embarrassing.

  200. And we'll see

  201. for the rest of chapter 15

  202. that the emphasis

  203. of the crucifixion

  204. and the death of Jesus

  205. is not in the brutality of it.

  206. And I mean,

  207. the other gospel writers,

  208. they'll talk about

  209. the brutality

  210. of their crucifixion.

  211. But Mark emphasizes

  212. its humiliation.

  213. How do you rehab

  214. somebody's reputation

  215. after they have hung

  216. on the cross

  217. as a naked,

  218. beaten criminal

  219. to die

  220. so that the body,

  221. this is the way

  222. it works in crucifixions,

  223. the body rots off

  224. and falls down.

  225. It is the most shameful

  226. thing that could happen

  227. in a shame-based society.

  228. The Sanhedrin

  229. can't do that.

  230. Rome can.

  231. So they meet

  232. in the early morning

  233. to figure out a way

  234. to meet with Pontius Pilate

  235. so that Jesus

  236. gets the stamp

  237. of death

  238. by crucifixion.

  239. It is remarkable

  240. their strategy

  241. in place in all this.

  242. It's completely unjust

  243. and they're going

  244. in the early morning.

  245. Why?

  246. I mean,

  247. quite the gig.

  248. If you're a Roman official,

  249. you wake up super early,

  250. you deal with

  251. the business of the day,

  252. 9, 10 o'clock,

  253. it's leisure time

  254. for the day.

  255. Not too bad.

  256. So it has to be

  257. early morning

  258. because there's going

  259. to be a lineup

  260. of people

  261. to try to get

  262. their issues

  263. or their cases

  264. or their disagreements

  265. dealt with

  266. by Pontius Pilate.

  267. So there is

  268. incredible planning

  269. that is happening here,

  270. incredible strategy,

  271. but it needs deception

  272. and this is the other part

  273. of it.

  274. And if you continue

  275. on with me

  276. in verse 2

  277. and following,

  278. Pilate asked Jesus,

  279. are you the king

  280. of the Jews?

  281. And he answered him,

  282. you have said so.

  283. And the chief priests

  284. accused him

  285. of many things.

  286. We'll pause

  287. really quickly there.

  288. If you remember,

  289. in chapter 14,

  290. Jesus is condemned

  291. by the religious

  292. establishment

  293. for being king

  294. of the Jews,

  295. for being the Messiah.

  296. King of the Jews

  297. is like another term

  298. for the Messiah.

  299. No,

  300. but for blasphemy.

  301. For Jesus saying

  302. that he will be

  303. at the right hand

  304. of the Father.

  305. Essentially equating

  306. that he and the Father

  307. are one.

  308. Now,

  309. there's a lot

  310. of overlap

  311. of what Jesus said

  312. and him claiming

  313. to be the Messiah,

  314. but they're very

  315. different things.

  316. But here,

  317. the chief priests

  318. and the religious

  319. establishment,

  320. they know that

  321. blasphemy is not

  322. a charge that sticks

  323. in Rome.

  324. Especially among

  325. the Jewish people.

  326. I mean,

  327. people had to worship

  328. the Roman gods

  329. and especially

  330. Caesar himself,

  331. but the Jewish people

  332. had a bit of

  333. an agreement

  334. with Rome.

  335. They could worship

  336. their gods,

  337. their God,

  338. as long as it

  339. didn't interfere

  340. with the Roman god.

  341. But if somebody

  342. blasphemes their god,

  343. who cares?

  344. If it's Rome,

  345. who cares?

  346. Who gives a rip?

  347. I mean,

  348. it's a backwater

  349. Judeans who believe

  350. in God,

  351. but it's a false god.

  352. Let them have their thing.

  353. Who cares if it's

  354. blasphemy?

  355. So what do they do?

  356. The religious

  357. establishment,

  358. the chief priest,

  359. what do they do?

  360. They say,

  361. this man is claiming

  362. to be the king

  363. of the Jews.

  364. Who's the king

  365. of the Jews right now?

  366. It's Caesar.

  367. It's not Jesus.

  368. And if they're,

  369. all of a sudden

  370. shows up

  371. a rival king,

  372. now that's a problem.

  373. Now that's something

  374. to crucify somebody for.

  375. And since

  376. about 30-ish,

  377. 40 years

  378. before Jesus

  379. comes on the scene,

  380. this idea of the Messiah

  381. started to take

  382. a political,

  383. um,

  384. era,

  385. like it started

  386. to transform

  387. into like a political

  388. position,

  389. a political office

  390. so that the Messiah

  391. would be understood

  392. as the one

  393. that would liberate us

  394. from our oppressors.

  395. So,

  396. how do they make

  397. the charges stick?

  398. They cook.

  399. They cook the charges.

  400. They're going to come up

  401. with something crappy,

  402. something that's really

  403. going to get Rome's attention.

  404. And they do.

  405. King of the Jews,

  406. that's a big problem.

  407. Their strategy

  408. is,

  409. uh,

  410. is,

  411. is by any means

  412. necessary.

  413. And that's exactly

  414. what they're doing.

  415. But what's,

  416. what's so interesting here

  417. is that we see

  418. a great irony.

  419. The chief priests

  420. in trying to condemn

  421. Jesus to death,

  422. they will affirm

  423. who he truly is.

  424. The king of the Jews.

  425. The Messiah was always

  426. supposed to be

  427. the king of the Jews.

  428. Not the king

  429. that, um,

  430. would come

  431. to just defeat

  432. Rome

  433. and install,

  434. um,

  435. a new

  436. throne of David

  437. that would be

  438. passed down

  439. kind of from

  440. generation to generation.

  441. But that David's throne

  442. would be reestablished.

  443. King David's throne

  444. would be reestablished

  445. in Israel

  446. forever.

  447. That,

  448. that,

  449. that the Messiah

  450. would come

  451. and he truly would

  452. reign over his people.

  453. Not just the Jewish people.

  454. The Bible talks about

  455. all people.

  456. And in trying to get

  457. charges to stick to Jesus,

  458. they affirm

  459. who he truly is.

  460. He is.

  461. It's incredible.

  462. They don't believe it,

  463. but the words

  464. come out of their mouths.

  465. We'll see that

  466. when Jesus is hung

  467. on the cross,

  468. it will say

  469. king of the Jews

  470. above him.

  471. Mark doesn't record this,

  472. but in another gospel,

  473. um,

  474. another gospel account,

  475. the Jewish leaders

  476. will say,

  477. take that down,

  478. that sign.

  479. He is no king of ours.

  480. Pilate says,

  481. I've done what I've done.

  482. It is so interesting

  483. that,

  484. that,

  485. that,

  486. the irony,

  487. that it's just,

  488. it's all over the page here.

  489. Wicked men

  490. often fulfill

  491. God's prophecy

  492. at their own ruin.

  493. And we're seeing

  494. this happen.

  495. So not only

  496. do they participate

  497. in this injustice

  498. with their scheming

  499. and their deception,

  500. but we see

  501. that their motivation

  502. is rooted

  503. in envy.

  504. Where do we see this?

  505. Look with me,

  506. verses 9 to 11.

  507. And Pilate answered them,

  508. saying,

  509. do you want me

  510. to release for you

  511. the king of the Jews?

  512. For he perceived,

  513. verse 10,

  514. for he perceived

  515. that it was out of envy

  516. that the chief priests

  517. had delivered him up.

  518. But the chief priests

  519. stirred up the crowd

  520. to have him release

  521. for them Barabbas instead.

  522. Verse 10,

  523. for he,

  524. Pilate,

  525. perceived that it was

  526. out of envy

  527. that the chief priests

  528. had delivered him up.

  529. They're envious of Jesus.

  530. Pilate put words

  531. to what we have been witnessing

  532. throughout the Gospels

  533. and especially

  534. in chapters 11 and 12

  535. where Jesus has

  536. the triumphal entry

  537. and he

  538. condemns

  539. the temple,

  540. but really

  541. the religious establishment

  542. of the day

  543. that did not seek

  544. to serve the people

  545. of God

  546. but instead

  547. to be served

  548. by the people

  549. of God.

  550. He exposed them

  551. and he has had

  552. a following

  553. and he has fruit

  554. in his ministry

  555. where they have none

  556. and they're envious.

  557. What's the result

  558. of their self-exaltation?

  559. they become blind

  560. to God himself

  561. who came not to

  562. be served

  563. but to serve

  564. and give his life

  565. as a ransom

  566. for many.

  567. That's

  568. chapter 10

  569. verse 45.

  570. To not be served

  571. but to serve

  572. and give his life

  573. as a ransom

  574. for many.

  575. The religious establishment

  576. minus the one guy

  577. in

  578. who comes up to Jesus,

  579. the one scribe

  580. who Jesus

  581. commends for his faith,

  582. but the entirety

  583. of the religious establishment

  584. is looking

  585. to be served

  586. and to give their lives

  587. as a ransom

  588. for ours.

  589. It's the complete opposite.

  590. Not only have they

  591. become spiritually blind

  592. but their envy

  593. has led to a dehumanization

  594. of Jesus

  595. and their people.

  596. They desire

  597. something

  598. that somebody else has

  599. and by doing so

  600. they dehumanize them.

  601. Envy always

  602. reduces a person

  603. to what they possess

  604. or what they can do

  605. for you

  606. or what they have

  607. their life

  608. the image

  609. that they project

  610. it reduces somebody

  611. to that

  612. and elevates desire

  613. to an eternal end.

  614. An unquenchable

  615. thirst for more.

  616. And what's the result?

  617. Jesus is going

  618. to his death.

  619. No longer do people

  620. have intrinsic value

  621. as reflective of God's image

  622. but are merely

  623. a sum of their stuff.

  624. It's a problem.

  625. It's what envy

  626. reduces people to.

  627. And it's hard

  628. because we want

  629. to be better

  630. and we want more things.

  631. And we want good things

  632. but we elevate them

  633. to ultimate things.

  634. And we look past

  635. the fact that

  636. in front of us

  637. is an image bearer

  638. of God himself.

  639. We dehumanize people.

  640. That's what envy does.

  641. But it goes further.

  642. Their envy

  643. doesn't just send

  644. Jesus to the cross

  645. but they foment

  646. the crowd.

  647. Remember

  648. it's hard to really

  649. hammer this home

  650. enough.

  651. These people

  652. are there

  653. to serve

  654. those people

  655. to open their eyes

  656. to the scriptures

  657. to the way of God

  658. that the people

  659. of Israel

  660. God's people

  661. are supposed to be

  662. light to the nations.

  663. And because

  664. of their envy

  665. they stir up

  666. the crowd

  667. so that the crowd

  668. really is only

  669. a means

  670. to achieve their end.

  671. They

  672. lead the crowd

  673. astray.

  674. The same crowd

  675. that chanted

  676. Hosanna

  677. Hosanna

  678. Hosanna

  679. in the highest

  680. blessed is he

  681. who comes

  682. in the name

  683. of the Lord

  684. in the triumphal entry.

  685. The same crowd.

  686. And now

  687. they're stirred up

  688. to say

  689. crucify him.

  690. There's power

  691. in leadership.

  692. And when leadership

  693. goes awry

  694. people suffer.

  695. And it's not

  696. to somehow

  697. to take the blame

  698. away

  699. but it's to show

  700. the power

  701. of leadership

  702. both good

  703. and bad.

  704. Their envy

  705. has shipwrecked

  706. the people

  707. of Israel.

  708. And what's

  709. interesting

  710. in all of this

  711. is that

  712. that same

  713. mentality

  714. that same

  715. fomenting

  716. aggression

  717. towards Rome

  718. will ultimately

  719. get Israel

  720. raised to the ground

  721. and Jerusalem

  722. destroyed.

  723. The temple

  724. completely

  725. toppled over.

  726. Friends

  727. we need to be

  728. violent

  729. in our fight

  730. against envy

  731. in our lives

  732. and especially

  733. in a day

  734. when image

  735. is truly

  736. everything.

  737. It truly

  738. is.

  739. It is

  740. everything.

  741. And in a day

  742. where image

  743. is everything

  744. envy

  745. it is like

  746. fertilizer

  747. and the

  748. envy

  749. just continues

  750. to grow

  751. and grow

  752. and grow.

  753. We need to be

  754. violent

  755. in how we

  756. attack it.

  757. It's very hard

  758. and we can't

  759. do it alone.

  760. We ask

  761. the good Lord

  762. for help.

  763. We cry out

  764. to him

  765. maybe literally.

  766. you know

  767. in a time

  768. of Lent

  769. we strip

  770. away

  771. some of

  772. the

  773. image

  774. some of

  775. the things

  776. that we

  777. hold on

  778. to as

  779. dear to

  780. us

  781. and we

  782. realize

  783. that we're

  784. actually more

  785. frail than we

  786. think

  787. and that we

  788. need God

  789. a lot more

  790. than we'd like

  791. to admit.

  792. We also

  793. worship together

  794. in a church

  795. and

  796. I've said this

  797. in the past

  798. I'll say it

  799. again

  800. confess your

  801. sins to

  802. one another

  803. and pray

  804. so that you

  805. may be healed.

  806. We come to

  807. the faith

  808. one by one

  809. but we walk

  810. it out

  811. side by side

  812. and I'm not

  813. sure you can

  814. walk out

  815. the faith

  816. any other

  817. way.

  818. How do you

  819. fight against

  820. envy?

  821. By God's

  822. strength

  823. and by the

  824. help of

  825. your brothers

  826. and sisters.

  827. God's word

  828. as well

  829. washing over

  830. us.

  831. So that's

  832. a chief

  833. priest.

  834. How about

  835. Pontius Pilate?

  836. Pontius Pilate

  837. was a

  838. prefect

  839. a Roman

  840. prefect

  841. in Judea.

  842. He was the

  843. ultimate

  844. sovereign

  845. in the

  846. land.

  847. Ultimate

  848. power to

  849. wield the

  850. sword.

  851. And he

  852. wielded the

  853. sword.

  854. Pilate did.

  855. He was

  856. bloody.

  857. He would

  858. kill hundreds

  859. and hundreds

  860. and hundreds

  861. of people

  862. and yet

  863. at the

  864. same time

  865. there's

  866. historical

  867. proof that

  868. he would

  869. placate the

  870. crowds to

  871. avoid

  872. rebellion.

  873. Apart from

  874. what we

  875. see here

  876. in chapter

  877. 15.

  878. So he

  879. used brutality

  880. and political

  881. expediency to

  882. keep the

  883. peace and

  884. to keep

  885. order.

  886. And here

  887. is an

  888. example of

  889. that in

  890. verse 6

  891. and to

  892. the end

  893. of our

  894. section

  895. verse 15.

  896. Now at

  897. the feast

  898. that is

  899. the Passover

  900. Pilate used

  901. to release

  902. for them

  903. one prisoner

  904. for whom

  905. they asked.

  906. and among

  907. the rebels

  908. in prison

  909. who had

  910. committed

  911. murder

  912. in the

  913. insurrection

  914. there was

  915. a man

  916. called

  917. Barabbas.

  918. And the

  919. crowd came

  920. up and

  921. began to

  922. ask Pilate

  923. to do

  924. as he

  925. usually did

  926. for them

  927. and he

  928. answered

  929. them

  930. do you

  931. want me

  932. to release

  933. for you

  934. the king

  935. of the

  936. Jews?

  937. For he

  938. perceived

  939. that it

  940. was out

  941. of envy

  942. that the

  943. chief

  944. priest

  945. had

  946. delivered

  947. him up.

  948. But the

  949. chief

  950. priest

  951. stirred up

  952. the crowd

  953. to have

  954. him release

  955. for them

  956. Barabbas

  957. instead.

  958. And Pilate

  959. again said

  960. to them

  961. then what

  962. shall I

  963. do with

  964. the man

  965. you call

  966. the king

  967. of the

  968. Jews?

  969. They cried

  970. out again

  971. crucify him

  972. and Pilate

  973. said to

  974. them why

  975. what evil

  976. has he

  977. done?

  978. But they

  979. shouted all

  980. the more

  981. crucify him

  982. so Pilate

  983. verse 15

  984. wishing to

  985. satisfy the

  986. crowd

  987. released for

  988. them

  989. Barabbas

  990. and having

  991. scourged

  992. Jesus

  993. he delivered

  994. him to be

  995. crucified.

  996. What a

  997. sham of a

  998. trial.

  999. Pilate

  1000. uses Jesus

  1001. to secure

  1002. political

  1003. favor

  1004. for the

  1005. crowd.

  1006. There is

  1007. at the

  1008. Passover

  1009. year by

  1010. year

  1011. there

  1012. was

  1013. a

  1014. heightened

  1015. kind of

  1016. political

  1017. fervor

  1018. in the

  1019. land.

  1020. There was

  1021. rebellion

  1022. always

  1023. kind of

  1024. in the

  1025. air

  1026. during

  1027. the

  1028. feast

  1029. the

  1030. Passover

  1031. feast.

  1032. And he

  1033. sees

  1034. here

  1035. an

  1036. innocent

  1037. man

  1038. but a

  1039. very useful

  1040. man.

  1041. Somebody

  1042. that he

  1043. could use

  1044. to get

  1045. through one

  1046. more year.

  1047. To deal

  1048. with this

  1049. crazy crowd

  1050. in front of

  1051. me.

  1052. I mean

  1053. it's almost

  1054. nine o'clock

  1055. I have

  1056. things to

  1057. do.

  1058. Who knows?

  1059. It's very

  1060. easy to

  1061. kind of

  1062. speculate

  1063. what Pontius

  1064. Pilate was

  1065. thinking.

  1066. The scripture

  1067. doesn't say

  1068. that at

  1069. all.

  1070. But we

  1071. know

  1072. it seems

  1073. that Pilate

  1074. thinks Jesus

  1075. is innocent

  1076. at the very

  1077. least.

  1078. He thinks

  1079. he's

  1080. innocent.

  1081. Now

  1082. whether

  1083. or not

  1084. Pilate

  1085. has

  1086. a conscience

  1087. in all

  1088. of this

  1089. or whether

  1090. it's been

  1091. seared

  1092. from years

  1093. of being

  1094. a Roman

  1095. governor

  1096. we're not

  1097. sure.

  1098. He knows

  1099. that

  1100. Jesus

  1101. is

  1102. innocent

  1103. but does

  1104. he think

  1105. it's

  1106. wrong?

  1107. Not

  1108. sure.

  1109. Maybe

  1110. maybe

  1111. not.

  1112. The

  1113. scripture

  1114. doesn't

  1115. say

  1116. Mark

  1117. doesn't

  1118. record

  1119. any

  1120. of

  1121. Pilate's

  1122. kind

  1123. of

  1124. inner

  1125. thinking.

  1126. But

  1127. nevertheless

  1128. it's

  1129. instructive

  1130. for us

  1131. to see

  1132. how the

  1133. desire

  1134. to

  1135. appease

  1136. rather

  1137. than

  1138. do

  1139. what

  1140. is

  1141. just

  1142. results

  1143. in

  1144. not

  1145. peace

  1146. now

  1147. and

  1148. peace

  1149. later

  1150. a little

  1151. bit

  1152. of

  1153. peace

  1154. now

  1155. and

  1156. calamity

  1157. for

  1158. everybody.

  1159. In

  1160. this

  1161. case

  1162. an

  1163. innocent

  1164. man

  1165. is

  1166. sent

  1167. to

  1168. his

  1169. death

  1170. and

  1171. a

  1172. crowd

  1173. is

  1174. merely

  1175. appeased

  1176. but

  1177. nothing

  1178. more.

  1179. The

  1180. Bible

  1181. is

  1182. crystal

  1183. clear

  1184. on

  1185. the

  1186. evil

  1187. of

  1188. political

  1189. corruption

  1190. and

  1191. injustice

  1192. and

  1193. this

  1194. is

  1195. where

  1196. the

  1197. scriptures

  1198. help

  1199. us

  1200. in a

  1201. sense

  1202. to

  1203. understand

  1204. I

  1205. guess

  1206. I'll

  1207. say it

  1208. this way

  1209. the

  1210. scriptures

  1211. has

  1212. formed

  1213. western

  1214. civilization

  1215. it

  1216. has

  1217. formed

  1218. Canada

  1219. it

  1220. has

  1221. formed

  1222. the

  1223. US

  1224. it

  1225. has

  1226. formed

  1227. the

  1228. West

  1229. and

  1230. we

  1231. take

  1232. it

  1233. for

  1234. granted

  1235. that

  1236. governments

  1237. should

  1238. not

  1239. be

  1240. corrupt

  1241. and

  1242. governments

  1243. should

  1244. be

  1245. just

  1246. and

  1247. politics

  1248. should

  1249. be

  1250. there

  1251. should

  1252. be

  1253. a

  1254. general

  1255. desire

  1256. to

  1257. bless

  1258. the

  1259. people

  1260. and

  1261. not

  1262. use

  1263. the

  1264. office

  1265. for

  1266. gain

  1267. checks and

  1268. balances

  1269. we take

  1270. that for

  1271. granted

  1272. but that's not the

  1273. case in ancient Rome

  1274. and it's

  1275. scripture verses

  1276. like this

  1277. that help

  1278. us

  1279. to see

  1280. our eyes

  1281. to the

  1282. deep

  1283. impact

  1284. and the

  1285. lasting

  1286. impact

  1287. of the

  1288. scriptures

  1289. on our

  1290. society

  1291. it's

  1292. remarkable

  1293. something

  1294. like this

  1295. we see

  1296. and we

  1297. say

  1298. yeah

  1299. Pilate

  1300. he's

  1301. corrupt

  1302. in the

  1303. first century

  1304. that wasn't

  1305. the case

  1306. we've

  1307. had the

  1308. scriptures

  1309. wash

  1310. over us

  1311. for

  1312. centuries

  1313. and

  1314. centuries

  1315. and

  1316. centuries

  1317. and we

  1318. take it

  1319. for

  1320. granted

  1321. but

  1322. our

  1323. standard

  1324. for

  1325. political

  1326. life

  1327. is

  1328. in a

  1329. big way

  1330. formed

  1331. by the

  1332. scriptures

  1333. we

  1334. revolt

  1335. rightly

  1336. at

  1337. political

  1338. cover ups

  1339. and political

  1340. decisions

  1341. that only

  1342. benefit

  1343. the elite

  1344. few

  1345. because we

  1346. have an

  1347. innate

  1348. sense

  1349. that

  1350. injustice

  1351. is

  1352. unfair

  1353. and

  1354. dangerous

  1355. and so

  1356. it is

  1357. because

  1358. God

  1359. has

  1360. created

  1361. the

  1362. world

  1363. with

  1364. order

  1365. he's

  1366. created

  1367. the

  1368. world

  1369. to

  1370. reflect

  1371. his

  1372. goodness

  1373. injustice

  1374. is

  1375. neither

  1376. orderly

  1377. or

  1378. good

  1379. is

  1380. it

  1381. I mean

  1382. the

  1383. story

  1384. of

  1385. David

  1386. Milgard

  1387. it

  1388. testifies

  1389. to

  1390. that

  1391. we

  1392. recoil

  1393. at

  1394. that

  1395. story

  1396. it's

  1397. a

  1398. tragedy

  1399. earlier

  1400. in Mark

  1401. we saw

  1402. something

  1403. very

  1404. similar

  1405. didn't

  1406. we

  1407. with

  1408. Herod

  1409. John

  1410. the

  1411. Baptist

  1412. is

  1413. a

  1414. problem

  1415. for

  1416. Herod

  1417. but

  1418. Herod

  1419. is

  1420. intrigued

  1421. by

  1422. him

  1423. but

  1424. his

  1425. brother's

  1426. wife

  1427. whom

  1428. he

  1429. shouldn't

  1430. have

  1431. married

  1432. and

  1433. John

  1434. the

  1435. Baptist

  1436. calls

  1437. it

  1438. out

  1439. wants

  1440. John

  1441. the

  1442. Baptist's

  1443. head

  1444. and

  1445. Herod

  1446. gets

  1447. himself

  1448. into

  1449. a

  1450. pickle

  1451. and

  1452. off

  1453. comes

  1454. John's

  1455. head

  1456. again

  1457. another

  1458. example

  1459. of

  1460. weak

  1461. leadership

  1462. doing

  1463. something

  1464. that's

  1465. wrong

  1466. to

  1467. placate

  1468. the

  1469. crowd

  1470. injustice

  1471. may

  1472. take

  1473. different

  1474. forms

  1475. but

  1476. it

  1477. never

  1478. ever

  1479. results

  1480. in

  1481. human

  1482. flourishing

  1483. or

  1484. blessing

  1485. never

  1486. does

  1487. again

  1488. peace

  1489. now

  1490. but

  1491. it

  1492. will

  1493. be

  1494. problems

  1495. later

  1496. injustice

  1497. never

  1498. never

  1499. results

  1500. in

  1501. human

  1502. flourishing

  1503. or

  1504. human

  1505. blessing

  1506. but

  1507. back to

  1508. Pontius Pilate

  1509. here

  1510. again

  1511. we see

  1512. an irony

  1513. in the

  1514. text

  1515. because

  1516. Pontius Pilate

  1517. is the

  1518. sovereign

  1519. over

  1520. everything

  1521. and yet

  1522. he is

  1523. manipulated

  1524. by the

  1525. crowd

  1526. and in a

  1527. sense

  1528. he bends

  1529. a knee

  1530. to the

  1531. crowd

  1532. and he

  1533. sacrifices

  1534. Jesus

  1535. like an

  1536. animal

  1537. on the

  1538. altar

  1539. of political

  1540. success

  1541. and expediency

  1542. and yet

  1543. the Lord

  1544. uses it

  1545. to fulfill

  1546. the prophecy

  1547. that Jesus

  1548. will be

  1549. he will

  1550. he will

  1551. be

  1552. crucified

  1553. like a

  1554. lamb

  1555. led

  1556. silently

  1557. to the

  1558. slaughter

  1559. and it's

  1560. unmistakable

  1561. that this

  1562. is an

  1563. image

  1564. from

  1565. Isaiah

  1566. 53

  1567. the

  1568. suffering

  1569. servant

  1570. who

  1571. is

  1572. sacrificed

  1573. for the

  1574. sins

  1575. of many

  1576. Pontius

  1577. Pilate

  1578. what does

  1579. he do

  1580. he attempts

  1581. to satisfy

  1582. the injustice

  1583. of the

  1584. chief priests

  1585. and the

  1586. mob

  1587. they've

  1588. worked up

  1589. they've

  1590. stirred

  1591. up

  1592. but

  1593. Jesus

  1594. will

  1595. satisfy

  1596. the

  1597. justice

  1598. of

  1599. God

  1600. all

  1601. because

  1602. Pontius

  1603. Pilate

  1604. is

  1605. trying to

  1606. do

  1607. what is

  1608. politically

  1609. expedient

  1610. for him

  1611. again

  1612. just like

  1613. with the

  1614. chief priests

  1615. we see

  1616. that

  1617. wicked

  1618. men

  1619. fall

  1620. into

  1621. doing

  1622. the

  1623. will

  1624. of

  1625. God

  1626. but

  1627. why

  1628. does

  1629. this

  1630. injustice

  1631. have

  1632. to

  1633. happen

  1634. why

  1635. couldn't

  1636. there

  1637. be

  1638. another

  1639. way

  1640. why

  1641. why

  1642. does

  1643. Jesus

  1644. have

  1645. to

  1646. go

  1647. through

  1648. this

  1649. injustice

  1650. why

  1651. would

  1652. God

  1653. deliver

  1654. Jesus

  1655. over

  1656. to

  1657. unjust

  1658. men

  1659. we see

  1660. that

  1661. both

  1662. the

  1663. chief

  1664. priest

  1665. delivered

  1666. Jesus

  1667. over

  1668. to

  1669. Pontius

  1670. Pilate

  1671. and

  1672. Pontius

  1673. Pilate

  1674. delivers

  1675. Jesus

  1676. over

  1677. to be

  1678. crucified

  1679. why

  1680. would

  1681. God

  1682. in a

  1683. sense

  1684. deliver

  1685. Jesus

  1686. over

  1687. to

  1688. unjust

  1689. men

  1690. and let's

  1691. look at

  1692. the

  1693. third

  1694. and final

  1695. character

  1696. of this

  1697. completely

  1698. farcical

  1699. unjust

  1700. trial

  1701. look at

  1702. Jesus

  1703. go back

  1704. with me

  1705. verses

  1706. one

  1707. to

  1708. five

  1709. and as

  1710. soon as

  1711. it was

  1712. morning

  1713. the chief

  1714. priest

  1715. held a

  1716. council

  1717. with the

  1718. elders

  1719. and scribes

  1720. and the whole

  1721. council

  1722. we'll go down to

  1723. verse two

  1724. and Pilate

  1725. asked Jesus

  1726. are you the

  1727. king of the

  1728. Jews

  1729. Jesus answered

  1730. him

  1731. you have

  1732. said so

  1733. and the chief

  1734. priest accused

  1735. him of many

  1736. things

  1737. and Pilate

  1738. asked him

  1739. have you

  1740. no answer

  1741. to make

  1742. see how many

  1743. charges

  1744. they bring

  1745. against you

  1746. but Jesus

  1747. made no

  1748. further answer

  1749. so that

  1750. Pilate

  1751. was amazed

  1752. more than

  1753. the accusations

  1754. of the chief

  1755. priests

  1756. the roars

  1757. of the

  1758. the crowd

  1759. and the

  1760. sliminess

  1761. of Pilate

  1762. in all of

  1763. this

  1764. the silence

  1765. of Jesus

  1766. dominates

  1767. this portion

  1768. of scripture

  1769. I mean

  1770. what he

  1771. says

  1772. what

  1773. you have

  1774. said so

  1775. that's

  1776. in a sense

  1777. Jesus

  1778. simply saying

  1779. you would

  1780. do well

  1781. to consider

  1782. what you're

  1783. saying

  1784. but other

  1785. than that

  1786. he is

  1787. silent

  1788. and it

  1789. and it

  1790. is deafening

  1791. his silence

  1792. I mean

  1793. who doesn't

  1794. defend

  1795. themselves

  1796. when they're

  1797. facing

  1798. the chair

  1799. in a sense

  1800. except that

  1801. it's not

  1802. the chair

  1803. it is

  1804. the most

  1805. gruesome

  1806. way to

  1807. die

  1808. how is

  1809. he silent

  1810. in all

  1811. of this

  1812. but he

  1813. is silent

  1814. he says

  1815. nothing

  1816. absolutely

  1817. nothing

  1818. the end

  1819. of verse

  1820. five

  1821. what does

  1822. it say

  1823. so that

  1824. Pilate

  1825. was

  1826. amazed

  1827. Pilate

  1828. has seen

  1829. criminals

  1830. in his

  1831. day

  1832. and it

  1833. I'm sure

  1834. it would

  1835. have taken

  1836. a lot

  1837. to amaze

  1838. Pilate

  1839. but here

  1840. he is

  1841. amazed

  1842. Jesus

  1843. doesn't

  1844. plead

  1845. his

  1846. case

  1847. he

  1848. doesn't

  1849. oppose

  1850. the

  1851. false

  1852. charges

  1853. he

  1854. says

  1855. nothing

  1856. and

  1857. Pilate

  1858. is

  1859. amazed

  1860. to be

  1861. clear

  1862. this isn't

  1863. weakness

  1864. it is

  1865. not a

  1866. sign

  1867. of

  1868. defeat

  1869. but rather

  1870. it's the

  1871. outworking

  1872. of

  1873. Jesus

  1874. who is

  1875. God

  1876. the son

  1877. of God

  1878. come down

  1879. in the

  1880. flesh

  1881. fully

  1882. man

  1883. and

  1884. fully

  1885. God

  1886. who in

  1887. a sense

  1888. left

  1889. all of

  1890. his

  1891. divine

  1892. prerogatives

  1893. all of

  1894. his

  1895. authority

  1896. in a

  1897. sense

  1898. when he

  1899. came to

  1900. earth

  1901. it is

  1902. him

  1903. submitting

  1904. to the

  1905. father's

  1906. will

  1907. it's

  1908. the

  1909. outworking

  1910. of what

  1911. we see

  1912. in the

  1913. garden

  1914. of

  1915. Gethsemane

  1916. not my

  1917. will be

  1918. done

  1919. but yours

  1920. and Jesus

  1921. is resolute

  1922. he knows

  1923. what's

  1924. happening

  1925. he is

  1926. silent

  1927. and it

  1928. is a

  1929. silence

  1930. of strength

  1931. not of

  1932. weakness

  1933. he is

  1934. completing

  1935. the

  1936. father's

  1937. will

  1938. and what

  1939. is the

  1940. will

  1941. of

  1942. God

  1943. that

  1944. both

  1945. justice

  1946. that

  1947. both

  1948. his

  1949. justice

  1950. will be

  1951. satisfied

  1952. both

  1953. his

  1954. justice

  1955. will be

  1956. satisfied

  1957. because of

  1958. the sin

  1959. and evil

  1960. that we

  1961. have

  1962. committed

  1963. and also

  1964. at the

  1965. same

  1966. time

  1967. that

  1968. the

  1969. human

  1970. race

  1971. may be

  1972. redeemed

  1973. from

  1974. the sin

  1975. and evil

  1976. that we

  1977. have

  1978. committed

  1979. the

  1980. justice

  1981. of

  1982. God

  1983. or the

  1984. will

  1985. of

  1986. God

  1987. is that

  1988. justice

  1989. and mercy

  1990. meets

  1991. in the

  1992. person

  1993. of

  1994. Jesus

  1995. Christ

  1996. and it

  1997. can only

  1998. be done

  1999. through the

  2000. death

  2001. and resurrection

  2002. of Jesus

  2003. who is

  2004. the

  2005. suffering

  2006. servant

  2007. the

  2008. lamb

  2009. who

  2010. goes

  2011. silently

  2012. to

  2013. the

  2014. slaughter

  2015. but why

  2016. does it

  2017. have to

  2018. be

  2019. an

  2020. unjust

  2021. trial

  2022. why

  2023. does

  2024. God

  2025. have to

  2026. deliver

  2027. Jesus

  2028. over

  2029. to

  2030. unjust

  2031. men

  2032. but

  2033. here's

  2034. the

  2035. thing

  2036. the

  2037. only

  2038. way

  2039. the

  2040. justice

  2041. of

  2042. God

  2043. and

  2044. the

  2045. mercy

  2046. of

  2047. God

  2048. could

  2049. ever

  2050. be

  2051. satisfied

  2052. is

  2053. with

  2054. a

  2055. perfect

  2056. substitute

  2057. in our

  2058. place

  2059. we're

  2060. not

  2061. perfect

  2062. you

  2063. think

  2064. you

  2065. have

  2066. a

  2067. good

  2068. day

  2069. excellent

  2070. the

  2071. next

  2072. day

  2073. or

  2074. the

  2075. next

  2076. week

  2077. the

  2078. wheels

  2079. fall

  2080. off

  2081. it's

  2082. kind

  2083. of

  2084. the

  2085. way

  2086. things

  2087. go

  2088. for

  2089. us

  2090. we're

  2091. not

  2092. perfect

  2093. so

  2094. in a

  2095. sense

  2096. if

  2097. we

  2098. are

  2099. punished

  2100. we

  2101. are

  2102. justly

  2103. punished

  2104. by

  2105. God

  2106. but

  2107. that's

  2108. not

  2109. God

  2110. showing

  2111. us

  2112. mercy

  2113. but

  2114. if

  2115. God

  2116. shows

  2117. us

  2118. mercy

  2119. where's

  2120. the

  2121. justice

  2122. and

  2123. God

  2124. has

  2125. to

  2126. have

  2127. his

  2128. justice

  2129. satisfied

  2130. so

  2131. only

  2132. in

  2133. Jesus

  2134. who

  2135. is

  2136. God

  2137. himself

  2138. God

  2139. the

  2140. son

  2141. of

  2142. God

  2143. but

  2144. also

  2145. fully

  2146. human

  2147. he

  2148. is

  2149. perfect

  2150. and

  2151. he

  2152. suffers

  2153. an

  2154. unjust

  2155. trial

  2156. because

  2157. what

  2158. other

  2159. trial

  2160. could

  2161. the

  2162. perfect

  2163. Jesus

  2164. suffer

  2165. under

  2166. there's

  2167. no

  2168. justice

  2169. just

  2170. way

  2171. to

  2172. punish

  2173. Jesus

  2174. he's

  2175. deserving

  2176. of no

  2177. punishment

  2178. and

  2179. yet

  2180. he is

  2181. punished

  2182. in

  2183. our

  2184. place

  2185. where

  2186. God's

  2187. justice

  2188. is

  2189. satisfied

  2190. and

  2191. his

  2192. mercy

  2193. extended

  2194. and

  2195. we see

  2196. this

  2197. we see

  2198. this

  2199. exchange

  2200. even

  2205. text

  2206. this

  2207. this

  2208. morning

  2209. Pilate

  2210. releases

  2211. Barabbas

  2212. for

  2213. Jesus

  2214. the

  2215. guilty

  2216. for

  2217. the

  2218. guiltless

  2219. and

  2220. it's

  2221. just

  2222. a

  2223. small

  2224. kind

  2225. of

  2226. picture

  2227. into

  2228. what

  2229. will

  2230. happen

  2231. on a

  2232. cosmic

  2233. level

  2234. of

  2235. Jesus

  2236. on

  2237. the

  2238. cross

  2239. friends

  2240. this

  2241. is

  2242. the

  2243. gospel

  2244. in

  2245. a

  2246. very

  2247. real

  2248. way

  2249. this

  2250. is

  2251. the

  2252. good

  2253. news

  2254. of

  2255. Christ

  2256. the

  2257. great

  2258. and

  2259. glorious

  2260. love

  2261. of

  2262. God

  2263. on

  2264. full

  2265. display

  2266. the

  2267. love

  2268. of

  2269. God

  2270. that

  2271. the

  2272. love

  2273. of

  2274. God

  2275. is

  2276. far

  2277. deeper

  2278. than

  2279. you

  2280. or

  2281. ever

  2282. like

  2283. to

  2284. admit

  2285. God

  2286. knows

  2287. us

  2288. and

  2289. he

  2290. loves

  2291. us

  2292. Christ

  2293. dies

  2294. in

  2295. our

  2296. place

  2297. unjustly

  2298. condemned

  2299. so that

  2300. we can

  2301. experience

  2302. the

  2303. mercy

  2304. and

  2305. love

  2306. of

  2307. God

  2308. but

  2309. there's

  2310. still

  2311. more

  2312. because

  2313. it's

  2314. not

  2315. that

  2316. Jesus

  2317. suffers

  2318. on

  2319. our

  2320. behalf

  2321. and

  2322. it

  2323. was

  2324. the

  2325. only

  2326. way

  2327. he

  2328. could

  2329. suffer

  2330. unjustly

  2331. but

  2332. Jesus

  2333. now

  2334. brings

  2335. meaning

  2336. to

  2337. suffering

  2338. and

  2339. this

  2340. life

  2341. is

  2342. full

  2343. of

  2344. it

  2345. it

  2346. is

  2347. full

  2348. of

  2349. suffering

  2350. and

  2351. a lot

  2352. of

  2353. that

  2354. suffering

  2355. is

  2356. unjust

  2357. that

  2358. you'll

  2359. experience

  2360. if you

  2361. turn to

  2362. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  2363. chapter 2

  2364. I'll

  2365. just

  2366. read it

  2367. from

  2368. my

  2369. text

  2370. chapter 2

  2371. verses

  2372. 18

  2373. to

  2374. 25

  2375. and

  2376. I'll

  2377. read it

  2378. this

  2379. is

  2380. the

  2381. same

  2382. Peter

  2383. who

  2384. will

  2385. talk

  2386. about

  2387. suffering

  2388. well

  2389. the

  2390. same

  2391. Peter

  2392. that

  2393. did

  2394. not

  2395. suffer

  2396. well

  2397. that

  2398. bent

  2399. immediately

  2400. under

  2401. pressure

  2402. who

  2403. caved

  2404. under

  2405. pressure

  2406. this

  2407. is

  2408. a

  2409. redeemed

  2410. man

  2411. writing

  2412. this

  2413. letter

  2414. he

  2415. says

  2416. this

  2417. 2 Peter

  2418. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2:18

  2419. chapter 2

  2420. verses

  2421. 18

  2422. servants

  2423. be subject

  2424. to your

  2425. masters

  2426. with all

  2427. respect

  2428. not only

  2429. to the

  2430. good

  2431. and gentle

  2432. but also

  2433. the unjust

  2434. for this

  2435. is a

  2436. gracious

  2437. thing

  2438. when mindful

  2439. of God

  2440. one endures

  2441. sorrows

  2442. while

  2443. suffering

  2444. unjustly

  2445. for what

  2446. credit

  2447. is it

  2448. if

  2449. when you

  2450. sin

  2451. and are

  2452. beaten

  2453. for it

  2454. you endure

  2455. for if

  2456. when you

  2457. do

  2458. good

  2459. and

  2460. suffer

  2461. for it

  2462. you

  2463. endure

  2464. this

  2465. for this

  2466. is a

  2467. gracious

  2468. thing

  2469. in the

  2470. sight

  2471. of God

  2472. for to

  2473. this

  2474. you

  2475. have

  2476. been

  2477. called

  2478. because

  2479. Christ

  2480. also

  2481. suffered

  2482. for you

  2483. leaving

  2484. you an

  2485. example

  2486. so that

  2487. you might

  2488. follow

  2489. his

  2490. steps

  2491. he

  2492. committed

  2493. no

  2494. sin

  2495. neither

  2496. was

  2497. deceit

  2498. found

  2499. in his

  2500. mouth

  2501. when he

  2502. was

  2503. reviled

  2504. he did

  2505. not

  2506. revile

  2507. in return

  2508. when he

  2509. suffered

  2510. he did

  2511. not

  2512. threaten

  2513. but continued

  2514. entrusting

  2515. himself

  2516. to him

  2517. who

  2518. judges

  2519. justly

  2520. he himself

  2521. bore

  2522. our sins

  2523. in his

  2524. body

  2525. on the

  2526. tree

  2527. that we

  2528. might die

  2529. to sin

  2530. and live

  2531. to righteousness

  2532. by his

  2533. wounds

  2534. you have

  2535. been

  2536. healed

  2537. for you

  2538. were

  2539. straying

  2540. like

  2541. sheep

  2542. but have

  2543. now

  2544. returned

  2545. to the

  2546. shepherd

  2547. and

  2548. overseer

  2549. of your

  2550. souls

  2551. when we

  2552. suffer

  2553. well

  2554. for

  2555. Christ's

  2556. sake

  2557. unjustly

  2558. looking

  2559. to him

  2560. for both

  2561. strength

  2562. and a

  2563. desire

  2564. to do

  2565. his

  2566. will

  2567. God

  2568. delights

  2569. in it

  2570. he

  2571. delights

  2572. in it

  2573. think

  2574. in your

  2575. head

  2576. of a

  2577. time

  2578. when

  2579. when

  2580. somebody

  2581. delighted

  2582. in something

  2583. you did

  2584. or for

  2585. who you

  2586. are

  2587. a parent

  2588. if it's

  2589. a distant

  2590. memory

  2591. it might

  2592. be hard

  2593. maybe

  2594. a part

  2595. of the

  2596. sting

  2597. is that

  2598. you can't

  2599. remember

  2600. but surely

  2601. it's good

  2602. if somebody

  2603. delights

  2604. in you

  2605. imagine

  2606. if God

  2607. in heaven

  2608. who created

  2609. everything

  2610. delights

  2611. in you

  2612. does that

  2613. not bring

  2614. great meaning

  2615. to suffering

  2616. all of a

  2617. sudden

  2618. is it

  2619. something that

  2620. we can

  2621. endure

  2622. by his

  2623. strength

  2624. knowing

  2625. that he

  2626. delights

  2627. in us

  2628. that it

  2629. brings him

  2630. great glory

  2631. and like

  2632. Christ

  2633. it will

  2634. ultimately

  2635. lead to

  2636. blessing

  2637. and it

  2638. might not

  2639. be our

  2640. physical

  2641. blessing

  2642. it might

  2643. be somebody

  2644. else

  2645. but we

  2646. will be

  2647. ultimately

  2648. blessed

  2649. because we

  2650. know the

  2651. delight of

  2652. God

  2653. in our

  2654. lives

  2655. what other

  2656. ideology

  2657. or philosophy

  2658. or religion

  2659. or whatever

  2660. it may be

  2661. can turn

  2662. suffering

  2663. into

  2664. ultimate

  2665. blessing

  2666. what can

  2667. when we

  2668. suffer

  2669. unjustly

  2670. let us

  2671. not

  2672. be angry

  2673. forever

  2674. there's a

  2675. time I guess

  2676. initially maybe

  2677. we react

  2678. we're human

  2679. beings

  2680. but let us

  2681. suffer

  2682. with the

  2683. mind of

  2684. Christ

  2685. remembering

  2686. what he

  2687. has done

  2688. he asks

  2689. you

  2690. to know

  2691. God's

  2692. eternal

  2693. blessing

  2694. it is

  2695. worth

  2696. everything

  2697. think about

  2698. David Milgard

  2699. he got

  2700. 10 million

  2701. dollars

  2702. for 22

  2703. years in

  2704. prison

  2705. just under

  2706. what

  2707. I mean

  2708. I'm not

  2709. going to

  2710. do the

  2711. math

  2712. between

  2713. 400 and

  2714. 500

  2715. thousand

  2716. dollars

  2717. a year

  2718. in prison

  2719. is that

  2720. does that

  2721. bring meaning

  2722. to his

  2723. suffering

  2724. is that

  2725. worth it

  2726. no

  2727. he passed

  2728. away last

  2729. year

  2730. I'm sure

  2731. he would

  2732. if he was

  2733. here today

  2734. say

  2735. did not

  2736. bring meaning

  2737. to my

  2738. suffering

  2739. but imagine

  2740. the delight

  2741. of God

  2742. in our

  2743. lives

  2744. only the

  2745. unjust

  2746. suffering

  2747. of Jesus

  2748. can give

  2749. meaning

  2750. to

  2751. injustice

  2752. for through

  2753. the silent

  2754. suffering

  2755. of the

  2756. servant

  2757. of God

  2758. our eternal

  2759. salvation

  2760. was won

  2761. and that

  2762. is the

  2763. ultimate

  2764. meaning

  2765. through

  2766. Christ

  2767. and his

  2768. suffering

  2769. we

  2770. are a

  2771. part of

  2772. the family

  2773. of God

  2774. let's pray

  2775. Lord God

  2776. thank you

  2777. for

  2778. for your

  2779. son who

  2780. who didn't

  2781. cower

  2782. who didn't

  2783. back away

  2784. but was

  2785. brave and

  2786. resolute

  2787. and looked

  2788. to you

  2789. and drank

  2790. the cup

  2791. that he

  2792. was to

  2793. drink

  2794. and he

  2795. drank it

  2796. all the

  2797. way

  2798. empty

  2799. for us

  2800. and now

  2801. we

  2802. through

  2803. faith in

  2804. him

  2805. can know

  2806. what it's

  2807. like to

  2808. be

  2809. children

  2810. of

  2811. God

  2812. but also

  2813. it helps

  2814. us to

  2815. suffer

  2816. to suffer

  2817. well

  2818. when

  2819. unjust

  2820. suffering

  2821. comes our

  2822. way

  2823. so Lord

  2824. help us

  2825. to be

  2826. people

  2827. that are

  2828. just

  2829. really

  2830. about

  2831. your

  2832. business

  2833. really

  2834. looking

  2835. to have

  2836. you

  2837. delight

  2838. in us

  2839. Lord

  2840. we

  2841. have no

  2842. idea

  2843. what the

  2844. future

  2845. will bring

  2846. whether

  2847. they be

  2848. small

  2849. sufferings

  2850. or large

  2851. ones

  2852. but Lord

  2853. we pray

  2854. that you'll

  2855. prepare us

  2856. so that when

  2857. that time

  2858. comes we'll

  2859. be ready

  2860. and that we

  2861. will know

  2862. your delight

  2863. we pray

  2864. this in

  2865. Christ's

  2866. name

  2867. Amen
