  1. Father in heaven, we thank you for another Sunday where we can gather as your people,

  2. trusting that whatever we have done this week, whatever failures, whatever hang-ups,

  3. whatever habitual sins we have found ourselves in once again,

  4. whatever fatigue that we may have in doing good, we can come to you and throw ourselves at your feet,

  5. trusting that because of your great love for us and the mercy that you have towards us in Christ Jesus,

  6. that we will be forgiven.

  7. Lord, help us not to be prideful people.

  8. Give us a humble heart.

  9. We pray this in Christ's mighty name.

  10. Amen.

  11. So last week in Nehemiah, before we enter a summer series in the book of Psalms,

  12. specifically the second book of Psalms.

  13. But here's an interesting thing about Nehemiah.

  14. It should have ended in chapter 12.

  15. I mean, it really should have.

  16. If you read the flow of the narrative,

  17. chapter 12 is a fine way to end the book of Nehemiah.

  18. Nehemiah, if you remember, he has heard of Jerusalem's, the destitution of Jerusalem.

  19. He has prayed.

  20. He has waited.

  21. He has fasted.

  22. He has sought the king.

  23. The king gives him leave.

  24. He goes there and starts this building campaign of the walls.

  25. But if you remember, it's not just the walls he's rebuilding.

  26. He's rebuilding the people.

  27. Now there's enemies that come and try to blackmail him and come against him with arms.

  28. But Nehemiah is steadfast and the walls are rebuilt.

  29. And then proper worship is instituted.

  30. And if you remember last week, there was this incredible show of contrition, corporate repentance.

  31. And then the people at the end of it, they purpose themselves to renew the covenant with God.

  32. And chapter 10 is this wonderful chapter of the people of God telling God that they're going to get back in the business of proper worship.

  33. True spirituality.

  34. It continues on in chapter 11 and then chapter 12 where the walls are dedicated and it seems like that's it.

  35. And then chapter 13 comes.

  36. Chapter 13 is quite anticlimactic.

  37. It is also very disappointing.

  38. For we see a people that have been rebuilt only to fall into the same folly once again.

  39. Why not just end it in chapter 12?

  40. Be done with it.

  41. End on a high note.

  42. It's interesting thing about the Bible is that it's not about telling a good story for a good story's sake.

  43. It's about telling the truth and describing the reality of human nature.

  44. So all the reforms and the rebuilding and the renewal that Nehemiah has spent tons of time and tons of energy and tons of money to see happen

  45. has now completely deteriorated.

  46. And now he is in chapter 13 getting wind hearing all of this and he is on his way back to Jerusalem to rebuild, to re-rebuild, to re-renew,

  47. to take what was broken that was fixed now is broken to make fixed again.

  48. And at a certain point when do you just say these people are defective?

  49. At what point do you say they're lost?

  50. That's enough.

  51. How many chances do we give to the people of God?

  52. How many chapter 13s would be in the future if this story continued on and it was written down for us?

  53. Yet in many ways this chapter, it's a fitting end in fact.

  54. Because it shows in a very authentic way how people can so easily compromise deeply held values,

  55. damage their most important relationships,

  56. and tolerate sin that is completely grievous, horribly grievous.

  57. So in short, Nehemiah 13 is a beautiful ending in a way because it's an authentic ending.

  58. And it helps us to understand the nature of even the most well-intentioned human heart.

  59. So, Nehemiah chapter 13, Nehemiah will come back and he'll address many issues,

    Nehemiah 13 chapter mention

  60. but we're going to take a look at three of the issues that he's going to address.

  61. The importance of a godly and holy disposition in worship.

  62. So godly and holy worship.

  63. And that's going to be as he addresses issues around the temple.

  64. The second is the importance of appropriate and consistent rhythms to life and relationship with money.

  65. We see that as he addresses issues around the Sabbath.

  66. And finally, we'll see the importance of a pure and devoted spirituality.

  67. And we'll see that as it pertains to Nehemiah addressing this issue of intermarriage

  68. with the people of God and the neighboring nations around them.

  69. So let's jump right into the first point, verse 4.

  70. If you have a Bible, please follow along.

  71. There's some Bibles still left at the back table.

  72. Excuse me.

  73. And feel free to grab one at any time and follow along.

  74. Nehemiah chapter 13, starting in verse 4.

    Nehemiah 13 chapter mention

  75. So if you remember a few weeks back, when we were reading through Ezra,

  76. the temple had been rebuilt and in it all of the things that pertained to temple worship,

  77. of which the storehouses of the various materials used in worship were presumably built.

  78. These materials were dedicated to the Lord.

  79. And also they were holy for the priests would use them to lead the people in proper worship.

  80. The priests were stewards of all these materials.

  81. And they had one goal, one responsibility above all,

  82. was to lead the people of God into the proper worship of God.

  83. So the temple was a huge deal in Israel.

  84. For it to be rebuilt meant that, in a sense, God was dwelling once again with His people.

  85. If you remember, the temple, the tabernacle before it, but also the Garden of Eden.

  86. It's this idea, this temple is the place where God will dwell with His people.

  87. God and His people dwell together.

  88. It's a central place of corporate worship for Israel.

  89. And it's mediated by this priestly class who were descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses.

  90. There were very unbending rules around worship.

  91. It's not like somebody from the tribe of Dan or Benjamin could be a priest.

  92. It had to be of the tribe of Levi.

  93. So it was only the Levites.

  94. Now we come to find that all the holiness associated with the temple

  95. and all the promises that were kept, or made, rather, in chapter 10 of Nehemiah

  96. were completely undone.

  97. Look with me, verses 4 to 13 here.

  98. Now before this, Eliashib the priest,

  99. who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God

  100. and who was related to Tobiah.

  101. Where have we heard Tobiah before?

  102. Chapter 2.

  103. Tobiah is one of the enemies of God's people.

  104. He has come right when Nehemiah has come to Jerusalem,

  105. and he is a mocker.

  106. I mean, likely he's of Jewish descent,

  107. but he's also described as an Ammonite.

  108. He is not a person of the people of God.

  109. He is somebody who is a mocker, who is a syncretist,

  110. who likely has worshipped other gods in addition to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  111. And now we find him where?

  112. In verse 4 and 5?

  113. Verse 5.

  114. That there was a chamber prepared for Tobiah,

  115. a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering,

  116. the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil,

  117. which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, gatekeepers,

  118. and the contributions for the priests.

  119. While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem.

  120. For in the 32nd year of Artaxerxes, king of Babylon, I went to the king,

  121. and after some time I asked the leave of the king,

  122. and came to Jerusalem,

  123. and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah,

  124. preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

  125. Verse 8.

  126. And I was very angry,

  127. and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber.

  128. Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers,

  129. and I brought back the vessels of the house of God

  130. with the grain offering and the frankincense.

  131. I'll pause really quickly there.

  132. The first thing we see here is that the enemy of God's people

  133. has moved into the very temple itself.

  134. It's a huge problem.

  135. And not just participating in the life of the temple.

  136. He is living, or at least dwelling,

  137. in a chamber that was meant to store the very things

  138. that were used in the worship of God,

  139. and to care for the priests.

  140. It is an affront to proper worship.

  141. It is evil in God's sight.

  142. And we see a few things that have gone wrong here.

  143. First, the sacred things of God

  144. had been treated profanely.

  145. And in this case, with indifference.

  146. No longer was the worship of God as prescribed by the law,

  147. held in high regard, or seen as essential.

  148. Instead, the priest in charge of the matter, Eliashib,

  149. he saw an opportunity to further his own family's wealth.

  150. It says that he is a relative of Tobiah.

  151. Some nepotism going on here.

  152. So he is seeing an opportunity to further his family's wealth

  153. by giving the storehouse of God to the very enemy of God's people.

  154. How does such a thing happen?

  155. Well, clearly, it wasn't Eliashib going in and strong-arming all the priests,

  156. kicking them out, clearing out the area,

  157. then putting Tobiah in there.

  158. The people of God lost interest in the things of God.

  159. The temple ceased to be an essential part of life.

  160. An indifference sunk into the people.

  161. It seeped into their very core.

  162. There's no mention here of the people going up in a rage.

  163. Anger, righteous anger, like we see in Nehemiah.

  164. Eliashib opens up the door.

  165. Tobiah comes right in.

  166. There's an indifference that has seeped into the people of God.

  167. Oftentimes, the greatest damage that can be done in our lives

  168. is caused by indifference, or at least begins with indifference.

  169. Being careless about things that need great care.

  170. Carelessness?

  171. In some ways, what's wrong with it?

  172. I tried it out.

  173. You know, okay, I'm not as hardcore in the religion.

  174. I'm going to use my time for something else.

  175. I mean, I could read scripture.

  176. I could go to church.

  177. I could engage in prayer.

  178. I could fellowship with God's people.

  179. I got other things on my plate.

  180. That's different than saying, curse God.

  181. I'm done with this.

  182. I hate it.

  183. See how indifference, eventually here,

  184. leads to a gradual drawing away of God's people from the things of God.

  185. The temple is not kept holy.

  186. It's neglected.

  187. And now an Ammonite is entering the assembly of God,

  188. and not just any Ammonite, but Tobiah, the enemy of God's people.

  189. The one that looked to cease the building of the walls

  190. was trying to thwart the rebuilding of Jerusalem,

  191. and now he's in the temple.

  192. This, by the way, is not some prohibition against an entire people group.

  193. I mean, we see in verses 1 to 3,

  194. we haven't read it here,

  195. but it essentially says that people read the Bible,

  196. they found that the Ammonites and the Moabites

  197. should not be a part of the assembly of God,

  198. so they kicked them out.

  199. This isn't a racial superiority thing,

  200. or a hatred against the Ammonites and Moabites thing.

  201. What we see here is a great desire for holiness,

  202. but also to weed out the sin of omission.

  203. It says in verses 1, 2, and 3,

  204. the reason why the Ammonites should not enter the assembly of God.

  205. Why?

  206. Verse 2,

  207. For they did not meet the people of Israel with bread and water.

  208. And it continues on,

  209. But hired Balaam against them to curse them.

  210. Now, the Ammonites were the ones who turned a blind eye

  211. to the needs of the people of Israel

  212. on their way to the Promised Land.

  213. And here,

  214. that sin of omission,

  215. that, in a sense,

  216. refusal to help the people of God

  217. is an affront,

  218. an evil thing in God's sight.

  219. Now,

  220. later on,

  221. we'll talk a bit more

  222. in the chapter

  223. when it comes to intermarriage.

  224. But the issue

  225. with this prohibition of God's people

  226. in the assembly of God,

  227. again,

  228. has nothing to do

  229. with their ethnicity,

  230. but rather

  231. their worship of other gods.

  232. If you remember,

  233. the entire story of Ruth

  234. is this beautiful story

  235. of a Moabite woman,

  236. not a Jew,

  237. not an Israelite,

  238. but a Moabite woman

  239. who comes to faith

  240. in the Almighty God

  241. and actually she is found

  242. to be in the very lineage

  243. of Christ Himself.

  244. We don't

  245. interpret one part of the Bible

  246. against another.

  247. What we have here

  248. is a desire for

  249. spiritual purity.

  250. The second thing

  251. that is problematic here

  252. is that the Levites,

  253. the priestly class of Israel,

  254. they're being so neglected

  255. that they have become farmers.

  256. And if you remember,

  257. when God is allotting

  258. the promised land,

  259. all the tribes

  260. get a portion of the land

  261. except the Levites.

  262. The Levites

  263. were to be the priests

  264. and the people

  265. were to give to the Levites

  266. and now they are farmers,

  267. gods,

  268. priests

  269. have become

  270. in a sense serfs.

  271. They don't have

  272. their own land.

  273. There's a great indifference

  274. and evil

  275. that has

  276. sought in,

  277. that seeped in

  278. to the people of God.

  279. And here's the thing,

  280. what we're finding here

  281. is that the people

  282. are choosing

  283. to not trust

  284. God's ways

  285. as good,

  286. but instead

  287. trust their own means

  288. to achieve

  289. their own glory.

  290. they are not giving

  291. to the church.

  292. And this is a,

  293. I've always found

  294. this very difficult

  295. to talk about

  296. in terms of tithing

  297. to the church.

  298. Not saying that

  299. give X amount of money,

  300. but understand that

  301. to give to the church

  302. is to,

  303. not to give to

  304. the Avatan family,

  305. although it certainly

  306. does benefit us,

  307. but it's to give to God.

  308. But more than that,

  309. I mean it can't be

  310. more than giving to God,

  311. but what it does

  312. to you

  313. when you give

  314. is that it reminds you

  315. where your treasure is.

  316. How you spend

  317. your money

  318. is where you

  319. have the most value.

  320. Where you spend

  321. your time

  322. is where you,

  323. will be the things

  324. that you value

  325. the most.

  326. And what you value

  327. the most,

  328. you are willing

  329. to sacrifice for.

  330. You are.

  331. What tithing does,

  332. it reminds us

  333. who is

  334. the number one priority.

  335. what life looks like

  336. under the kingship of God.

  337. It helps us

  338. to put our treasure

  339. in heaven.

  340. So there is a neglect

  341. of godly worship

  342. due to indifference

  343. and it's having

  344. a ripple effect

  345. resulting in making

  346. what is holy

  347. to be profane

  348. and allowing enemies

  349. to be victorious

  350. and making destitute

  351. those whom

  352. they have an obligation

  353. to provide for.

  354. You start to see

  355. that one sin,

  356. one act of indifference,

  357. it starts to unravel

  358. a lot of things.

  359. A lot of people

  360. start to suffer,

  361. a lot of things

  362. start to crumble.

  363. The indifference

  364. is so often rooted

  365. in a self-centeredness

  366. that will only embrace

  367. God in the areas

  368. that we deem

  369. personally beneficial.

  370. God gets neglected

  371. or relegated

  372. so that he is

  373. nothing more

  374. than a good luck charm

  375. or a genie in the bottle

  376. or a means

  377. to suppress

  378. a guilty conscience

  379. but never anything more.

  380. We embrace God

  381. in the areas

  382. that we think

  383. won't cause us

  384. too much

  385. or require from us

  386. too much

  387. but the great irony

  388. in all of this

  389. is that we think

  390. that the very obligations

  391. of God

  392. will cause us

  393. harm

  394. and limit

  395. our ability

  396. to live free lives

  397. but it's the opposite.

  398. Will allow us

  399. to live joyful lives

  400. that will enlargen

  401. our lives.

  402. Will allow us

  403. to love

  404. in ways like God.

  405. Not perfectly like God

  406. but like God.

  407. That light

  408. and life

  409. will be a part

  410. of our very being.

  411. But friends,

  412. if we

  413. think the opposite,

  414. we think that God

  415. will actually

  416. cause us

  417. not to flourish,

  418. we will find ourselves

  419. increasingly

  420. less joyful,

  421. increasingly

  422. less kind

  423. and loving.

  424. We will find ourselves

  425. beginning to be

  426. enslaved

  427. to the things

  428. that we

  429. embrace

  430. as if they

  431. have become

  432. our slave owners

  433. and we are

  434. their slaves.

  435. In the Psalms

  436. it talks about

  437. those

  438. that worship

  439. idols

  440. become like idols.

  441. Blind

  442. and deaf

  443. and dumb.

  444. But when we

  445. worship God

  446. we get to

  447. live out

  448. an existence

  449. that God

  450. himself created.

  451. It's truly

  452. a beautiful thing.

  453. Let me ask you

  454. a question.

  455. Are the people

  456. more or less

  457. joyful and free

  458. with the temple

  459. in disrepute?

  460. Are they more

  461. or less

  462. joyful and free

  463. with an enemy

  464. making his home

  465. in one of the

  466. storehouse chambers

  467. of the temple?

  468. Are the people

  469. more

  470. or less

  471. joyful and free

  472. as they see

  473. the people

  474. that they are

  475. to care for

  476. the Levites

  477. essentially living

  478. a life of

  479. serfdom?

  480. The call

  481. is for godly

  482. and holy

  483. worship

  484. according to

  485. God's word

  486. that will

  487. inevitably

  488. lead us

  489. to have

  490. a life

  491. of flourishing

  492. but also

  493. and this is

  494. where we'll

  495. transition to

  496. the next point

  497. will help us

  498. to have

  499. appropriate

  500. rhythms to

  501. life

  502. that God

  503. has designed

  504. life that

  505. we may have

  506. proper rhythms

  507. that we will

  508. feast and fast

  509. and work

  510. and play

  511. that there's

  512. aspects of our

  513. life where it's

  514. not a grind

  515. non-stop

  516. it will also

  517. help us to have

  518. a right relationship

  519. with money

  520. and we've touched

  521. on that already

  522. but look with me

  523. in verses 15 to 21

  524. in those days

  525. I saw in Judah

  526. people treading

  527. wine presses

  528. on the Sabbath

  529. and bringing in

  530. heaps of grain

  531. and loading them

  532. on donkeys

  533. and also wine

  534. grapes

  535. figs

  536. and all kinds

  537. of loads

  538. which they brought

  539. into Jerusalem

  540. on the Sabbath day

  541. and I warned them

  542. on the day

  543. when they sold

  544. food

  545. Tyrians also

  546. who lived

  547. in the city

  548. brought in fish

  549. and all kinds

  550. of goods

  551. and sold them

  552. on the Sabbath

  553. to the people

  554. of Judah

  555. in Jerusalem itself

  556. then I confronted

  557. the nobles of Judah

  558. and I said to them

  559. what is this evil

  560. thing that you are doing

  561. profaning the Sabbath day

  562. did not your fathers

  563. act in this way

  564. and did not our God

  565. bring all this disaster

  566. on them

  567. and on this city

  568. now you are bringing

  569. more wrath

  570. on Israel

  571. by profaning

  572. the Sabbath

  573. and as soon

  574. as it began

  575. to grow dark

  576. at the gates

  577. of Jerusalem

  578. before the Sabbath

  579. I commanded

  580. that the doors

  581. should be shut

  582. and gave orders

  583. that they should

  584. not be opened

  585. until after the Sabbath

  586. I'll pause there

  587. Sabbath breaking

  588. is a failure

  589. to recognize

  590. that God

  591. is the creator

  592. who delights

  593. in his good creation

  594. and who delights

  595. in goodness

  596. it's also a failure

  597. to recognize

  598. that God

  599. is the redeemer

  600. who provides salvation

  601. not simply

  602. from sin

  603. and brokenness

  604. and evil

  605. but salvation

  606. to enjoyment

  607. and flourishing

  608. and growth

  609. and life

  610. that is why

  611. the triune God

  612. himself invites

  613. people to enter

  614. into the age

  615. to come

  616. to new heavens

  617. and earth

  618. what does he say

  619. enter into my rest

  620. the Sabbath

  621. is a giant

  622. pointer sign

  623. to what will come

  624. for eternity

  625. to rest from work

  626. and rest in order

  627. to worship

  628. and delight in God

  629. is to embrace

  630. his vision

  631. for life

  632. that we would

  633. look to him

  634. for our provision

  635. and declare

  636. with our lives

  637. that there is

  638. a redemption

  639. that awaits

  640. all who put their

  641. faith and hope

  642. and trust

  643. in Jesus

  644. the Sabbath

  645. isn't just a day

  646. off work

  647. for us

  648. which it certainly

  649. is

  650. it is so much

  651. bigger

  652. and grander

  653. and I think

  654. if we have a vision

  655. of what the Sabbath

  656. truly is

  657. then we will see it

  658. as a joy

  659. not necessarily

  660. easy

  661. to participate

  662. in

  663. the people

  664. here see it

  665. as just a day

  666. off

  667. as an inconvenience

  668. why

  669. because I could

  670. be making money

  671. on day seven

  672. you are ruining

  673. my productivity

  674. besides

  675. the Tyrians

  676. are coming

  677. from the north

  678. they have fish

  679. that fish

  680. might spoil

  681. I like my fish

  682. there's

  683. there's aspects

  684. to this

  685. that

  686. that disregard

  687. what the Sabbath

  688. points to

  689. namely God

  690. and his redemption

  691. and his creation

  692. and it

  693. really disregards

  694. God himself

  695. because God

  696. gave the Sabbath

  697. as a gift

  698. to enjoy

  699. making it

  700. an essential

  701. aspect of good

  702. living

  703. the neglect

  704. of the Sabbath

  705. is

  706. will always

  707. result in

  708. a social

  709. physical

  710. and spiritual

  711. breakdown

  712. why

  713. because Sabbath

  714. robs us

  715. of our rest

  716. and friends

  717. you might be

  718. really good

  719. at the grind

  720. but you need

  721. rest

  722. you do

  723. you need to

  724. breathe

  725. and exhale

  726. you need to

  727. enjoy

  728. God's creation

  729. I say this

  730. okay

  731. I'll

  732. time out

  733. this isn't

  734. like a brag

  735. turns out

  736. that planting

  737. a church

  738. is kind of

  739. hard

  740. okay

  741. it's

  742. especially

  743. in COVID

  744. and it's

  745. been a moving

  746. target

  747. and I'll say

  748. this

  749. my family

  750. has suffered

  751. I have

  752. robbed my

  753. family of rest

  754. because

  755. you know

  756. Sunday's coming

  757. I'm sorry

  758. I just

  759. I have to

  760. put in the

  761. time

  762. if you

  763. find yourself

  764. in a promotion

  765. and that

  766. promotion

  767. is something

  768. that is just

  769. requiring

  770. you know

  771. an extra

  772. ten hours a week

  773. an extra

  774. five hours a week

  775. do you have

  776. that in your

  777. margins

  778. to absorb

  779. or will

  780. somebody else

  781. have to

  782. absorb it

  783. for you

  784. will you

  785. not have

  786. the rest

  787. you need

  788. will you

  789. be robbing

  790. from

  791. your family

  792. you know

  793. that's another

  794. thing about

  795. the Sabbath

  796. it's a one

  797. day a week

  798. where a family

  799. gets together

  800. and enjoys

  801. one another

  802. I'll get to a bit

  803. you know

  804. if you're feeling

  805. overwhelmed

  806. we'll talk a bit

  807. more about it

  808. but this

  809. is what the

  810. Sabbath

  811. that has a

  812. vision of

  813. of a family

  814. coming together

  815. if you have

  816. a family

  817. it also means

  818. in a sense

  819. being

  820. wise about

  821. how we

  822. or how we

  823. do not engage

  824. in the economy

  825. is there a

  826. day that you

  827. could not

  828. buy or

  829. sell

  830. a day that

  831. maybe the

  832. day before

  833. you do double

  834. the work

  835. you collect

  836. double the

  837. manna

  838. so that

  839. you have

  840. one day

  841. where you're

  842. not working

  843. or causing

  844. somebody else

  845. to work

  846. but ultimately

  847. by not

  848. enjoying the

  849. Sabbath

  850. you rob

  851. not that you

  852. can rob

  853. God

  854. but you

  855. rob God

  856. from

  857. from

  858. enjoying

  859. him

  860. and him

  861. enjoying

  862. you

  863. I would

  864. just say

  865. that

  866. listen

  867. chapter 13

  868. verses 15

  869. to 23

  870. ought not

  871. to be

  872. copy and

  873. pasted

  874. for today

  875. okay

  876. there's

  877. nuance

  878. to this

  879. but it

  880. ought not

  881. to be

  882. disregarded

  883. either

  884. listen

  885. the

  886. Sabbath

  887. ultimately

  888. is for

  889. our

  890. benefit

  891. what

  892. does

  893. Jesus

  894. say

  895. in

  896. Mark

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  897. chapter

  898. 2

  899. at

  900. the

  901. end

  902. the

  903. Sabbath

  904. was

  905. made

  906. for

  907. man

  908. not

  909. man

  910. for

  911. the

  912. Sabbath

  913. so

  914. the

  915. son

  916. of

  917. man

  918. is

  919. Lord

  920. even

  921. on

  922. the

  923. Sabbath

  924. so

  925. how

  926. do

  927. we

  928. enjoy

  929. the

  930. Sabbath

  931. friends

  932. say

  933. we

  934. try

  935. it's

  936. a

  937. moving

  938. target

  939. and we

  940. try

  941. and

  942. next

  943. week

  944. you

  945. have

  946. the

  947. Sabbath

  948. on

  949. Sunday

  950. or

  951. Saturday

  952. or

  953. maybe

  954. works

  955. out

  956. to

  957. have

  958. it

  959. in

  960. the

  961. middle

  962. of

  963. the

  964. week

  965. you

  966. try

  967. you

  968. do

  969. your

  970. best

  971. by

  972. God's

  973. strength

  974. asking

  975. to

  976. prepare

  977. beforehand

  978. to

  979. resist

  980. the

  981. temptations

  982. to

  983. participate

  984. in the

  985. things

  986. that you

  987. could do

  988. any other

  989. day of

  990. the week

  991. but you

  992. try

  993. maybe

  994. to enjoy

  995. the

  996. Sabbath

  997. is to

  998. make sure

  999. that there's

  1000. a good

  1001. meal

  1002. and the

  1003. table

  1004. is set

  1005. and you

  1006. enjoy

  1007. it

  1008. maybe

  1009. the

  1010. Sabbath

  1011. is to

  1012. get

  1013. if

  1014. possible

  1015. an

  1016. hour

  1017. alone

  1018. in

  1019. solitude

  1020. easier said

  1021. than done

  1022. for some

  1023. people here

  1024. maybe

  1025. it's

  1026. to

  1027. not

  1028. be

  1029. a

  1030. hermit

  1031. and

  1032. to

  1033. enjoy

  1034. people

  1035. around

  1036. you

  1037. it's

  1038. the

  1039. opposite

  1040. maybe

  1041. the

  1042. Sabbath

  1043. is to

  1044. learn

  1045. how to

  1046. be

  1047. in the

  1048. company

  1049. of

  1050. people

  1051. without

  1052. our

  1053. phones

  1054. without

  1055. distractions

  1056. but to

  1057. enjoy

  1058. them

  1059. and that

  1060. again

  1061. is not

  1062. easy

  1063. so we

  1064. try

  1065. and we

  1066. practice

  1067. we

  1068. practice

  1069. and we

  1070. practice

  1071. we don't

  1072. get

  1073. legalistic

  1074. about it

  1075. and say

  1076. I messed

  1077. up

  1078. it's done

  1079. forget

  1080. it

  1081. but we

  1082. keep

  1083. trying

  1084. our

  1085. best

  1086. why

  1087. because

  1088. we

  1089. want

  1090. to

  1091. enjoy

  1092. the

  1093. Lord

  1094. we

  1095. we

  1096. see

  1097. his

  1098. vision

  1099. for

  1100. our

  1101. life

  1102. and by

  1103. his

  1104. strength

  1105. we will

  1106. engage

  1107. in that

  1108. but

  1109. Sabbath

  1110. may be

  1111. so foreign

  1112. and so

  1113. difficult

  1114. for you

  1115. because you

  1116. have just

  1117. an inability

  1118. to rest

  1119. because when

  1120. you do

  1121. pain

  1122. may come

  1123. be that

  1124. physical

  1125. or emotional

  1126. maybe you've

  1127. struggled

  1128. with trauma

  1129. in your

  1130. life

  1131. and it's

  1132. just

  1133. better to

  1134. not let

  1135. your mind

  1136. not hit

  1137. pause

  1138. on your

  1139. thoughts

  1140. maybe you

  1141. are just

  1142. a very

  1143. ornery

  1144. person

  1145. and you

  1146. need to

  1147. by God's

  1148. strength

  1149. learn not

  1150. to be

  1151. so crusty

  1152. I don't

  1153. know how

  1154. the algorithm

  1155. works on

  1156. YouTube

  1157. maybe it's

  1158. because

  1159. I subscribe

  1160. to religious

  1161. channels

  1162. and Bible

  1163. project

  1164. videos

  1165. and stuff

  1166. but one

  1167. video came

  1168. up this

  1169. past week

  1170. and it's

  1171. a rabbi

  1172. in Toronto

  1173. I don't

  1174. know how

  1175. I'm not

  1176. subscribing

  1177. to him

  1178. but listen

  1179. it's

  1180. the algorithm

  1181. okay

  1182. but it's

  1183. like this

  1184. 20 minute

  1185. clip

  1186. and he's

  1187. talking

  1188. about how

  1189. for the

  1190. Orthodox

  1191. community

  1192. there's a

  1193. huge problem

  1194. with keeping

  1195. the Sabbath

  1196. with just

  1197. non-stop

  1198. drinking

  1199. they call

  1200. it

  1201. Kiddush

  1202. Club

  1203. Kiddush

  1204. is like

  1205. a blessing

  1206. you say

  1207. over

  1208. a cup

  1209. of wine

  1210. where people

  1211. they'll just

  1212. get bombed

  1213. I don't know

  1214. if that's a

  1215. correct

  1216. Christian term

  1217. but they get

  1218. bombed

  1219. on the

  1220. Sabbath

  1221. because

  1222. he says

  1223. they can't

  1224. stand

  1225. the prolonged

  1226. silence

  1227. you know

  1228. I can relate

  1229. to that

  1230. I mean

  1231. maybe not

  1232. the prolonged

  1233. silence

  1234. because we

  1235. don't have

  1236. that so much

  1237. at our

  1238. house

  1239. but just

  1240. where we're

  1241. not distracted

  1242. where the

  1243. dopamine

  1244. isn't going

  1245. crazy in my

  1246. brain for

  1247. more than

  1248. half an

  1249. hour

  1250. an hour

  1251. two hours

  1252. would I

  1253. be more

  1254. or less

  1255. loving

  1256. and free

  1257. would you

  1258. be

  1259. consider

  1260. the

  1261. Sabbath

  1262. and

  1263. practice it

  1264. the point

  1265. isn't to

  1266. give an

  1267. exhaustive

  1268. list of

  1269. do's and

  1270. don'ts

  1271. but to

  1272. understand

  1273. what the

  1274. Sabbath

  1275. is

  1276. friends

  1277. it's a

  1278. gift

  1279. from God

  1280. to us

  1281. it's a

  1282. taste of

  1283. heaven

  1284. just a

  1285. little bit

  1286. and a

  1287. declaration

  1288. that one

  1289. day we

  1290. will enjoy

  1291. forever rest

  1292. that will

  1293. completely

  1294. satisfy our

  1295. God given

  1296. desires

  1297. because God

  1298. gives his

  1299. very self

  1300. to us

  1301. this is what

  1302. Nehemiah is

  1303. fighting about

  1304. this is what

  1305. the people have

  1306. forgotten

  1307. and we also

  1308. see that

  1309. Nehemiah is

  1310. about a pure

  1311. and devoted

  1312. spirituality

  1313. verses 23

  1314. to 28

  1315. read with me

  1316. in those

  1317. days

  1318. also I

  1319. saw the

  1320. Jews who

  1321. had married

  1322. women of

  1323. Ashdod

  1324. Ammon

  1325. and Moab

  1326. and half

  1327. of their

  1328. children spoke

  1329. the language

  1330. of Ashdod

  1331. and they

  1332. could not

  1333. speak the

  1334. language of

  1335. Judah but

  1336. only the

  1337. language of

  1338. each people

  1339. and I

  1340. confronted

  1341. them and

  1342. cursed them

  1343. and beat

  1344. some of

  1345. them and

  1346. pulled out

  1347. their hair

  1348. and I

  1349. made them

  1350. take an

  1351. oath in

  1352. the name

  1353. of God

  1354. saying you

  1355. shall not

  1356. give your

  1357. daughters to

  1358. their sons

  1359. or take

  1360. their daughters

  1361. for your

  1362. sons or

  1363. for yourselves

  1364. did not

  1365. Solomon

  1366. king of

  1367. Israel sin

  1368. on account

  1369. of such

  1370. women among

  1371. the many

  1372. nations there

  1373. was no king

  1374. like him and

  1375. he was beloved

  1376. by his God

  1377. and God made

  1378. him king over

  1379. all Israel

  1380. nevertheless

  1381. foreign women

  1382. made even him

  1383. to sin

  1384. shall we then

  1385. listen to you

  1386. and do all

  1387. this great evil

  1388. and act

  1389. treacherously

  1390. against our

  1391. God by

  1392. marrying

  1393. foreign women

  1394. foreign women

  1395. are in

  1396. Jesus'

  1397. lineage

  1398. okay

  1399. so the

  1400. issue isn't

  1401. with foreign

  1402. women

  1403. the issue

  1404. is how

  1405. the introduction

  1406. of a faith

  1407. or a

  1408. philosophy

  1409. or an

  1410. ideology

  1411. into the

  1412. people of

  1413. God

  1414. so that the

  1415. people of

  1416. God

  1417. say I

  1418. worship

  1419. God

  1420. and

  1421. how that

  1422. destroys the

  1423. people of

  1424. God

  1425. there's more

  1426. than one way

  1427. to destroy a

  1428. city

  1429. and this is

  1430. one of them

  1431. yesterday's

  1432. enemies have

  1433. now become

  1434. today's

  1435. marriage partners

  1436. and like in

  1437. Ezra the

  1438. Israelites have

  1439. married people

  1440. of a different

  1441. faith

  1442. people from

  1443. Ashdod and

  1444. Ammon and

  1445. Moab

  1446. the nations

  1447. that have

  1448. plagued Israel

  1449. from before

  1450. they even

  1451. entered into

  1452. the promised

  1453. land

  1454. and to

  1455. attempt it

  1456. to thwart

  1457. the rebuilding

  1458. of the

  1459. wall

  1460. again the

  1461. issue isn't

  1462. with race

  1463. or ethnicity

  1464. but a

  1465. faith issue

  1466. the people

  1467. are not

  1468. worshippers

  1469. of God

  1470. alone

  1471. but God

  1472. and

  1473. God

  1474. and the

  1475. gods

  1476. of Ashdod

  1477. God

  1478. and the

  1479. gods

  1480. of Ammon

  1481. God

  1482. and the

  1483. gods

  1484. of Moab

  1485. the people

  1486. no longer

  1487. speak the

  1488. language of

  1489. Judah

  1490. that is to

  1491. say that

  1492. they have

  1493. forgotten

  1494. their God

  1495. they don't

  1496. they don't

  1497. know the

  1498. words of

  1499. scripture

  1500. they don't

  1501. recall

  1502. the Lord

  1503. when they

  1504. wake up

  1505. and when

  1506. they go

  1507. down

  1508. they don't

  1509. say

  1510. and teach

  1511. their children

  1512. in their

  1513. comings and

  1514. goings

  1515. on the

  1516. highways

  1517. on the

  1518. byways

  1519. they don't

  1520. participate

  1521. in the

  1522. worship

  1523. of God's

  1524. people

  1525. they have

  1526. forgotten

  1527. God

  1528. and Nehemiah

  1529. what does he do

  1530. he appeals to

  1531. scripture again

  1532. look at King

  1533. Solomon

  1534. look at what

  1535. he's

  1536. he was the

  1537. best

  1538. people came

  1539. from all

  1540. over the

  1541. known world

  1542. he built

  1543. the temple

  1544. he was

  1545. unbelievable

  1546. blessed

  1547. by God

  1548. and yet

  1549. he entered

  1550. into a

  1551. syncretistic

  1552. lifestyle

  1553. God and

  1554. God and

  1555. God and

  1556. God is a

  1557. jealous God

  1558. jealous because

  1559. there are no

  1560. other gods

  1561. beside him

  1562. so to worship

  1563. a false god

  1564. is to elevate

  1565. something created

  1566. over the

  1567. creator

  1568. we see that

  1569. in the book

  1570. of Romans

  1571. the apostle

  1572. Paul spells

  1573. that out

  1574. in an

  1575. incredible way

  1576. and it's a

  1577. huge offense

  1578. to God

  1579. but also

  1580. he is jealous

  1581. because he

  1582. desires good

  1583. for his

  1584. people

  1585. and the

  1586. worship of

  1587. idols or

  1588. other gods

  1589. or God

  1590. and

  1591. will not

  1592. lead to

  1593. our blessing

  1594. but our

  1595. curse

  1596. we are

  1597. image bearers

  1598. of almighty

  1599. God

  1600. we are to

  1601. reflect his

  1602. glory

  1603. and when we

  1604. worship false

  1605. gods we

  1606. further mar

  1607. and tarnish

  1608. what God

  1609. has called

  1610. holy

  1611. us

  1612. it is like

  1613. having Tobiah

  1614. the Ammonite

  1615. move into

  1616. the temple

  1617. that is

  1618. us

  1619. it is a

  1620. desecration

1621. it is not the way

  1622. God had intended it

  1623. friends we

  1624. struggle with this

  1625. idolatry is rampant

  1626. we don't have

  1627. idols

  1628. we have talked

  1629. about this

  1630. a number of

  1631. times

  1632. but whatever

  1633. we put our

  1634. trust in

  1635. our hope in

  1636. that is

  1637. apart from

  1638. the almighty

  1639. God

  1640. that is in

  1641. addition to

  1642. the almighty

  1643. God

  1644. we find

  1645. ourselves

  1646. giving into

  1647. the God

  1648. of

  1649. Ammon

  1650. and Moab

  1651. and Ashdod

  1652. and I'll tell you

  1653. one thing about

  1654. those gods

  1655. in the Bible

  1656. those gods

  1657. they demanded

  1658. rape

  1659. and detestable

  1660. sexual acts

  1661. and even

  1662. child sacrifices

  1663. with a promise

  1664. that blessings

  1665. were to come

  1666. now who is

  1667. more free

  1668. and enjoying

  1669. life and love

  1670. the people

  1671. who worship

  1672. the God

  1673. of Abraham

  1674. Isaac

  1675. and Jacob

  1676. that gives

  1677. them a day

  1678. of rest

  1679. that points

  1680. to what

  1681. eternity

  1682. looks like

  1683. or the gods

  1684. that demand

  1685. their very

  1686. children

  1687. to be burned

  1688. for what

  1689. for fertility

  1690. for a promise

  1691. of wealth

  1692. in this life

  1693. who is more

  1694. free

  1695. who is enjoying

  1696. life more

  1697. we may think

  1698. we can

  1699. find goodness

  1700. and flourishing

  1701. apart from God

  1702. but friends

  1703. that is only

  1704. because

  1705. when we enjoy

  1706. goodness

  1707. apart from God

  1708. it's only because

  1709. God gives grace

  1710. to the just

  1711. and the unjust

  1712. he makes it

  1713. rain on

  1714. the good

  1715. and the bad

  1716. he gives

  1717. common grace

  1718. to all people

  1719. but make no mistake

  1720. idolatry will

  1721. tear apart

  1722. our families

  1723. our communities

  1724. our neighborhoods

  1725. our very selves

  1726. so Nehemiah

  1727. enacts these

  1728. reforms

  1729. I mean

  1730. he makes a trip

  1731. from Persia

  1732. back to Jerusalem

  1733. and the man

  1734. is on a mission

  1735. by the way

  1736. the whole bit

  1737. about laying

  1738. hands on people

  1739. and ripping out

  1740. their hair

  1741. apparently

  1742. it is a

  1743. prescribed

  1744. punishment

  1745. thank God

  1746. it's not the case

  1747. anymore

  1748. you know

  1749. you guys don't

  1750. show up to church

  1751. for a week

  1752. you see me

  1753. on your front door

  1754. I'm ready

  1755. to pull out hair

  1756. not a chance

  1757. but Nehemiah

  1758. has come

  1759. to

  1760. to

  1761. turn things

  1762. around

  1763. and it seems

  1764. like he did

  1765. but we know

  1766. that it didn't

  1767. last

  1768. another Nehemiah

    Nehemiah 13 chapter mention

  1769. chapter 13

  1770. is just on the

  1771. cusp

  1772. this is God's

  1773. people

  1774. this is what

  1775. happens

  1776. reforms

  1777. failures

  1778. crying out

  1779. to God

  1780. reforms

  1781. failures

  1782. crying out

  1783. to God

  1784. so where is

  1785. the hope

  1786. I'll tell you

  1787. where the hope

  1788. isn't

  1789. it's not in

  1790. you or me

  1791. can't be

  1792. because

  1793. the best

  1794. effort

  1795. that the best

  1796. of us

  1797. in this room

  1798. can do

  1799. will inevitably

  1800. fail

  1801. give it 48

  1802. hours

  1803. give it to

  1804. the end of

  1805. the week

  1806. give it to

  1807. Canada Day

  1808. being generous

  1809. so it's not

  1810. in our own

  1811. efforts

  1812. as important

  1813. as our own

  1814. efforts are

  1815. there's no

  1816. hope in

  1817. true hope

  1818. eternal hope

  1819. in self

  1820. reformation

  1821. only in

  1822. the grace

  1823. of God

  1824. and we'll

  1825. just touch

  1826. on these

  1827. three verses

  1828. I didn't

  1829. read these

  1830. but they're

  1831. key

  1832. Nehemiah

  1833. he says

  1834. the same

  1835. thing

  1836. just about

  1837. three times

  1838. after each

  1839. section

  1840. and it's

  1841. in verse

  1842. 14

  1843. 22

  1844. and then

  1845. in verse

  1846. 30 to

  1847. 31

  1848. verse 14

  1849. it says

  1850. this

  1851. remember

  1852. remember me

  1853. oh my

  1854. God

  1855. concerning

  1856. this

  1857. and do

  1858. not wipe

  1859. out my

  1860. good deeds

  1861. that I

  1862. have done

  1863. for the

  1864. house of

  1865. my God

  1866. and for

  1867. his service

  1868. that's

  1869. verse 14

  1870. verse 22

  1871. says this

  1872. then I

  1873. commanded

  1874. verse 23

  1875. no no

  1876. verse 22

  1877. remember

  1878. this also

  1879. in my

  1880. favor

  1881. oh my

  1882. God

  1883. and spare

  1884. me

  1885. according

  1886. to the

  1887. greatness

  1888. of your

  1889. steadfast

  1890. love

  1891. and then

  1892. again

  1893. in verse

  1894. 30

  1895. and 31

  1896. thus I

  1897. cleansed

  1898. from

  1899. everything

  1900. foreign

  1901. and established

  1902. the duties

  1903. of the

  1904. priests

  1905. and Levites

  1906. each

  1907. in his

  1908. work

  1909. and I

  1910. provided

  1911. for the

  1912. wood

  1913. offering

  1914. at

  1915. appointed

  1916. times

  1917. and for

  1918. the

  1919. first

  1920. fruits

  1921. and then

  1922. it

  1923. ends

  1924. this

  1925. this

  1926. way

  1927. remember

  1928. me

  1929. oh my

  1930. God

  1931. for

  1932. good

  1933. remembering

  1934. in the

  1935. Bible

  1936. is never

  1937. just

  1938. hey

  1939. God

  1940. take a

  1941. picture

  1942. for

  1943. later

  1944. you know

  1945. so you

  1946. can

  1947. remember

  1948. what

  1949. I've

  1950. done

  1951. to

  1952. say

  1953. God

  1954. remember

  1955. me

  1956. is to

  1957. say

  1958. God

  1959. I

  1960. need

  1961. your

  1962. salvation

  1963. now

  1964. help

  1965. me

  1966. now

  1967. don't

  1968. delay

  1969. come

  1970. to my

  1971. side

  1972. come

  1973. to my

  1974. aid

  1975. I

  1976. need

  1977. your

  1978. help

  1979. now

  1980. I

  1981. need

  1982. your

  1983. grace

  1984. and

  1985. constantly

  1986. Nehemiah

  1987. is

  1988. trying

  1989. by God's

  1990. strength

  1991. to do

  1992. these

  1993. reforms

  1994. but

  1995. ultimately

  1996. he is

  1997. throwing

  1998. himself

  1999. at

  2000. God's

  2001. grace

  2002. remember

  2003. me

  2004. remember

  2005. the

  2006. people

  2007. God

  2008. don't

  2009. forsake

  2010. us

  2011. come

  2012. through

  2013. this text

  2014. Nehemiah

  2015. 13

  2016. it helps

  2017. us to

  2018. know that

  2019. we are

  2020. in deep

  2021. need of

  2022. God

  2023. it leaves

  2024. nothing

  2025. in our

  2026. room

  2027. for us

  2028. to

  2029. imagine

  2030. that

  2031. we

  2032. are

  2033. the

  2034. heroes

  2035. of

  2036. our

  2037. own

  2038. story

  2039. Nehemiah

  2040. 13

  2041. points

  2042. us

  2043. to

  2044. our

  2045. need

  2046. for

  2047. God's

  2048. grace

  2049. so

  2050. that

  2051. we

  2052. can

  2053. cry

  2054. out

  2055. God

  2056. remember

  2057. us

  2058. and

  2059. friends

  2060. he

  2061. certainly

  2062. has

  2063. because

  2064. Jesus

  2065. comes

  2066. you

  2067. remember

  2068. Nehemiah

  2069. he's

  2070. zealous

  2071. in the

  2072. temple

  2073. taking

  2074. Tobiah's

  2075. furniture

  2076. tossing

  2077. it

  2078. out

  2079. making

  2080. a

  2081. big

  2082. scene

  2083. now

  2084. who

  2085. else

  2086. do

  2087. you

  2094. Jesus

2095. when he goes in there he sees the money changers the people selling pigeons and he is enraged he makes a whip he drives them out he flips tables there's not too many things that are recorded in all four gospel accounts but the cleansing of the temple is one of them

2096. Jesus he is zealous for true worship he is zealous for true worship in fact he is the temple himself if the temple is the place where God meets mankind where God dwells among his people Jesus fully man and fully God is the temple of God

2097. Jesus also is the temple of God

  2098. Moab

  2099. Moab

  2100. Moab

2101. he has defeated him and who has defeated him and who have killed him and the temple again and he has defeated evil

2102. He has defeated evil once and forever and he has destroyed the idol so that we don't have to believe in them

2103. why he has given us his Holy Spirit so that we can worship God and learn to worship God and learn to worship him by his strength because of what he has done on the cross

  2104. verse two

  2105. says this

  2106. in chapter 13

  2107. for

2108. this is talking about the sin of the Moabites

2109. for they did not meet the people of Israel with bread and water,

2110. but hired Balaam against them to curse them.

  2111. And here it is.

2112. Yet our God turned the curse into a blessing.

  2113. That's what God does.

2114. He takes your life and He makes it a blessing.

2115. When the weight of this world and sin and death and enslavement,

2116. your life feels like it is under a curse,

2117. He turns it around and makes it a blessing.

2118. That awaits all of us.

2119. We put our faith and trust and hope in this wonderful God who will remember us,

2120. who has a zeal for His temple,

2121. who is about the Sabbath rest and who has destroyed all idols.

  2122. Let us pray.

2123. Father, we thank You for Nehemiah.

2124. We thank You that it ends in a, I guess in a sense, a non-Hollywood way,

  2125. a non-climactic way.

2126. It ends in some ways in a very depressing way,

2127. but it also ends in a way that helps us to see that in our own strength,

2128. we have nothing that we can offer.

2129. So it ultimately then points us to You and our need for Your grace.

2130. So Lord, help us to be people that worship You well,

2131. that are about humility and seeking Your face when we mess up and getting back to it.

2132. Lord, that we will be people that are about Your Sabbath rest,

2133. not just a rest from work and a proper trust in You for our provision

2134. and just a time where we can put our feet up and exhale,

2135. but a time where we can worship You and look to what is awaiting us in Christ Jesus.

2136. And ultimately, Lord, help us to be pure in our worship,

2137. that we will not worship You and other things.

2138. Lord, by Your strength, we ask all of this in Christ's mighty name.

  2139. Amen.
