  1. We continue on in the summer series in the Psalms. This morning we're in Psalm 65.

  2. Psalm 65 is the beginning of a mini set, Psalm 65, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

  3. And they're Psalms of David.

  4. This one especially is a harvest psalm.

  5. But it's not just a harvest psalm.

  6. It seems like there's this allusion to a victory in battle or some sort of redemption that the Lord is doing.

  7. It's a very interesting psalm.

  8. And in many ways it's broken up into three sections.

  9. In many ways it seems kind of disconnected.

  10. But it's very much a psalm that is unified in thought and in progression.

  11. So we're going to get into Psalm 65.

  12. If you have a Bible, please follow along with me.

  13. There should be some Bibles.

  14. There's no more Bibles left at the back.

  15. That is okay.

  16. Maybe share with a friend if you don't have a Bible and you want to follow along.

  17. We are in the age of the influencer.

  18. Travel, vlogs, wellness, podcasts, workout gurus, you name it.

  19. You probably follow maybe all those categories and more on social media or YouTube.

  20. And there's a lot of good things to glean from such sources.

  21. However, more often than not, they're not simply advertised as tips and tricks to look and think and feel better.

  22. But oftentimes they sell a vision of the good life, of utopia, of the key to unlocking human potential.

  23. Full human potential.

  24. In some ways, they take on salvific messaging.

  25. There's a problem with this kind of thinking.

  26. Because it promises eternal satisfaction and eternal life using the tools and resources of this temporal world.

  27. And friends, I'll say this right off the bat.

  28. We are people that have eternal desires and eternal hopes.

  29. Things that can't be met in the here and now.

  30. There's this interesting line from C.S. Lewis' book, Mere Christianity, that he wrote, I mean, decades and decades and decades ago.

  31. And it's a Christian favorite.

  32. If you haven't read it, I commend it to you.

  33. It would be a great summer read.

  34. And this is what he says.

  35. The Christian says,

  36. Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exist.

  37. A baby feels hunger.

  38. Well, there is such a thing as food.

  39. A duckling wants to swim.

  40. Well, there is such a thing as water.

  41. Men feel sexual desire.

  42. Well, there is such a thing as sex.

  43. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy,

  44. the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.

  45. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud.

  46. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing.

  47. Our text today is, like I mentioned, a psalm of David, a song of, it's a harvest song.

  48. But really, it's a song of praise that paints a beautiful picture of what real, eternal satisfaction, real salvation looks like.

  49. It's, in fact, the only picture of utopia that we so desperately want but are unable to achieve.

  50. It's something that we crave and it's ever so elusive.

  51. In short, this text praises and extols the triune God for his loving kindness.

  52. Another way to say it, for his grace.

  53. That thing that God gives us that is completely undeserved,

  54. that he gives us, not because we've curried his favor,

  55. but because he is a kind, loving, and good God.

  56. And it is provision for our very souls.

  57. So we'll see God's grace described in our text in three ways.

  58. First, how God's grace gives us our only satisfaction.

  59. And we see that in verses 1 to 4, especially in verse 3.

  60. The second thing we'll see is how God's grace is our only hope in this life.

  61. And we see that in verses 5 to 8.

  62. And finally, how God's grace is greater and more robust than we could ever have imagined or hoped for.

  63. And we'll see that in verses 9 to 13.

  64. Another way, if you want to go into a bit more of a deep dive into Psalm 65,

  65. you can look at it also, the temple, the earth, and the harvest.

  66. And we see God's grace in all three of those as well.

  67. So let's look first at how God's grace gives us our only true satisfaction.

  68. Let's read verses 1 to 4.

  69. Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion.

  70. And to you shall vows be performed.

  71. By the way, Zion is shorthand for Jerusalem.

  72. It's the place where God dwells, His house.

  73. O you who hear prayer, to you shall all flesh come.

  74. When iniquities prevail against me, you atone for our transgressions.

  75. Blessed is the one you choose and bring near to dwell in your courts.

  76. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, the holiness of your temple.

  77. This harvest song does not begin in the fields.

  78. It begins in the temple or the house of God in Jerusalem, in Zion, where God's presence is.

  79. And it is not taken for granted, David or the people of God, that they have a privileged position based on anything that they have done.

  80. But rather, it is a means of God's grace that they can even enjoy being in His presence.

  81. This is not the prayer of an entitled people.

  82. God extends His loving kindness.

  83. He extends His grace to a people that really, truly have no business being in His presence.

  84. Yet, it is He who hears prayers.

  85. It is He who beckons all flesh to come to Him.

  86. It is He who knows the frailty of people and atones for their sins.

  87. I'll just draw your attention quickly to one bit here.

  88. Verse 2, it says,

  89. O you who hear prayer.

  90. It seems like an obvious thing.

  91. But God hears what you have to say to Him.

  92. It is not an exercise in futility where you pray to the ceiling or to the walls around you

  93. as if God might hear it but do nothing about it.

  94. God hears prayers in order for Him to act, to answer the prayers.

  95. This is a means of grace from God.

  96. And we see this in this section because what is it that the people are praying to God for?

  97. Verse 3,

  98. When our iniquities prevail against us, you atone for our transgressions.

  99. It's a people that know their place.

  100. A people that know that they don't have what it takes to stand in the presence of God

  101. they are honest about what is happening in their lives.

  102. That they are sinful.

  103. That they have broken commands.

  104. That they have hurt people.

  105. That they have been hurt.

  106. And they need God to intervene.

  107. And God, He hears their prayers not to just hear but again,

  108. so that He can answer their prayers.

  109. To meet their needs.

  110. To satisfy their longings and their brokenness

  111. that gets in the way of achieving what they desire.

  112. God hears your prayers.

  113. It seems again so elementary to say,

  114. but friends, God hears your prayers.

  115. He hears your prayers.

  116. When you pray, God hears.

  117. Sometimes it feels like it's not the case,

  118. but God hears your prayers.

  119. When will He answer?

  120. How will He answer?

  121. That is up to Him.

  122. But God delights when His people pray to Him.

  123. God who is lacking nothing,

  124. who does not need to help you

  125. in order to fill some kind of void in His life,

  126. as if He needs to help Daniel

  127. because He has this desire to be a helpful person.

  128. God hears your prayers and chooses to act

  129. because He is a God who is loving.

  130. That also means that God is not overwhelmed with your prayers.

  131. When you bring things to God that overwhelm you,

  132. I mean in verse 3,

  133. at the very least,

  134. these people have sins and brokenness and hang-ups,

  135. maybe addictions,

  136. who knows what it is.

  137. There are many things that overwhelm them,

  138. but nothing overwhelms God.

  139. That's the God who hears our prayers

  140. and acts out of love,

  141. not out of compulsion,

  142. not out of a desire to fill a void,

  143. but because of His loving kindness,

  144. because of an extension of His grace.

  145. The guilt that troubles you,

  146. the hang-ups that have followed you your whole life,

  147. don't overwhelm God.

  148. He hears them and they are not impossible

  149. for Him to overcome.

  150. In fact, He will.

  151. Nothing that shakes you will shake God.

  152. And that's a beautiful, wonderful truth.

  153. He is able to do it.

  154. This text also shows us that God is good

  155. and in Him there is no evil.

  156. He did not create us in order to squash us

  157. or neglect us or abuse us.

  158. There is no ill intent in His design

  159. for you and for me.

  160. In fact, it's the opposite.

  161. Consider that He desires to satisfy the longings

  162. and desires of your heart.

  163. Not the things that you want because they're shiny,

  164. but the things that you want that are shiny

  165. because you want a fulfillment

  166. that those things will never fulfill.

  167. Those longings, those desires,

  168. He knows them and can satisfy them.

  169. Why?

  170. Because He has given you,

  171. He has created you with such longings,

  172. such desires.

  173. He has created you with intent

  174. in His image and in His likeness.

  175. And what does He satisfy us with ultimately?

  176. It's His presence.

  177. We see this in verse 4.

  178. The longing of the human heart

  179. is to know God and be known by Him.

  180. And we, again,

  181. alluding to my opening of the influencers,

  182. not all of them,

  183. but again,

  184. this idea that

  185. if you follow this program,

  186. if you subscribe to this newsletter,

  187. if you take in what I have to say,

  188. you will somehow connect with

  189. something that is transcendent.

  190. You will be complete.

  191. But because the human heart is made

  192. to know God and be known by Him,

  193. we can be,

  194. we will be incomplete

  195. until we experience that.

  196. Until we know that.

  197. Until God makes a way for us

  198. to know Him.

  199. So what does God,

  200. what does He satisfy us with?

  201. His self.

  202. But also with a guilt-free,

  203. redeemed soul.

  204. Because that is the entryway

  205. into His presence.

  206. God is perfect.

  207. And He can't have imperfection

  208. come into His courts.

  209. He is a good God.

  210. He can't have evil

  211. come into His courts.

  212. So what does He do?

  213. He makes a way

  214. to deal with the evil.

  215. He makes a way

  216. to deal with the impurity.

  217. He makes a way

  218. to deal with the sin.

  219. And we see this in verse 3.

  220. He atones for our transgressions.

  221. Really, this is a picture

  222. of the sacrificial system

  223. in the temple

  224. where the priest,

  225. on behalf of the people,

  226. would sacrifice an animal.

  227. The sin would be laid on the animal.

  228. And the people,

  229. by the shedding of the blood

  230. of the animal,

  231. would be made right before God.

  232. Now, it was not perfect

  233. because it had to be done

  234. time and time and time again.

  235. But it would ultimately point

  236. to what Christ would do

  237. on the cross

  238. where He would take

  239. the sins

  240. and the brokenness

  241. and the evil

  242. and the junk

  243. of the world

  244. upon His shoulders

  245. and die once and for all

  246. in our stead

  247. so we would be made

  248. right in Him.

  249. And this is what

  250. this first section

  251. verses 1-4

  252. is alluding to.

  253. Friends, the Christian life,

  254. it may seem

  255. like it is full of prohibitions

  256. and doldrums

  257. and stuffiness.

  258. But that would be

  259. a false view of the truth.

  260. Because again,

  261. verse 4,

  262. what does it say?

  263. Yeah, I mean,

  264. pretty good that we get

  265. to be in the courts of God

  266. to be in His presence.

  267. It says,

  268. Blessed is the one

  269. who you choose

  270. and bring near

  271. to dwell in your court

  272. so we shall be satisfied

  273. with the goodness

  274. of your house,

  275. the holiness

  276. of your temple.

  277. Especially the latter half

  278. of verses 4,

  279. we shall be satisfied

  280. with the goodness

  281. of your house,

  282. the holiness

  283. of your temple.

  284. This speaks to

  285. on holidays,

  286. holy days

  287. in ancient Israel

  288. how there would be

  289. sacrifices

  290. but that people would

  291. take and eat the meat.

  292. It would be a time

  293. of rejoicing,

  294. choice drink,

  295. choice food.

  296. Cares would be

  297. left in the past

  298. and we would celebrate

  299. and it points

  300. to a picture

  301. of a transcendent joy

  302. that awaits those

  303. who know

  304. and fear the Lord.

  305. A kind of joy

  306. that accompanies

  307. a glad heart

  308. and a light spirit.

  309. A kind of joy

  310. that can transcend

  311. the problems

  312. in the here

  313. and the now.

  314. That's not

  315. a promise

  316. that we'll be happy

  317. all the time.

  318. The Christian life

  319. can be very difficult.

  320. It can,

  321. you know,

  322. it's difficult

  323. on the very basis

  324. that we want things,

  325. we are selfish,

  326. and we will kill

  327. and steal

  328. and lie

  329. and destroy

  330. to get them.

  331. And it's hard

  332. to fight against that.

  333. Sometimes it feels

  334. difficult and hard

  335. and it's not a happy life

  336. all the time

  337. but it will be

  338. a joy-filled life

  339. because we know

  340. that whatever

  341. we have gone through,

  342. whatever we will

  343. go through,

  344. the worst

  345. that we have

  346. gone through.

  347. And it's not

  348. the end of our story.

  349. It's not the thing

  350. that will come

  351. to define us.

  352. Rather,

  353. eternity will.

  354. Joy,

  355. unspeakable

  356. and full of glory

  357. is our destination

  358. as it is said

  359. in other parts

  360. of Holy Scripture.

  361. When your spirit

  362. is heavy laden

  363. with guilt

  364. from sin,

  365. exhausted

  366. with the inability

  367. to overcome,

  368. when you are

  369. beaten down

  370. by iniquities,

  371. know that there

  372. is a God

  373. that hears

  374. your prayers

  375. and delights

  376. in atoning

  377. your sins

  378. and welcoming

  379. you into

  380. his very presence.

  381. That's a thing

  382. we come to realize

  383. in greater depths

  384. more and more

  385. as we walk

  386. through the Christian life

  387. but friends,

  388. this is our life.

  389. This is what

  390. we can expect.

  391. what

  392. rivals

  393. that kind of grace

  394. of the risen Lord

  395. Jesus Christ?

  396. What

  397. influencer

  398. did you watch

  399. yesterday

  400. on YouTube

  401. that offers you

  402. what the scriptures

  403. offer you

  404. and guarantee

  405. I would put forward

  406. to you that

  407. there isn't

  408. anything

  409. that holds a candle

  410. to that.

  411. He does

  412. what we cannot

  413. do

  414. and how

  415. do we

  416. then respond

  417. with trust

  418. and praise

  419. that expresses

  420. itself in

  421. obedience,

  422. prayer,

  423. and constantly

  424. returning to

  425. him when we

  426. falter,

  427. when we sin.

  428. The life

  429. of confession

  430. is a life

  431. of throwing

  432. ourselves

  433. once again

  434. at the

  435. kindness

  436. and grace

  437. of the Lord.

  438. But God

  439. doesn't only

  440. extend his

  441. kindness

  442. to his people.

  443. Is he

  444. the God

  445. of all

  446. the cosmos

  447. but only acts

  448. in a regional

  449. way?

  450. Put it

  451. another way,

  452. is he the God

  453. of the whole

  454. world but

  455. it's only

  456. for Israel?

  457. Because this

  458. is a psalm

  459. that was written

  460. by King David

  461. to the people

  462. of Israel.

  463. The answer is

  464. no.

  465. Look with me

  466. in verses 5

  467. and 8.

  468. God is indeed

  469. the creator

  470. of the cosmos,

  471. everything that

  472. is created.

  473. Therefore he

  474. is indeed

  475. the God

  476. of all people.

  477. So this next

  478. section,

  479. verses 5 to 8,

  480. will help us

  481. to see how

  482. he is not

  483. only our hope

  484. as people

  485. that put their

  486. faith and trust

  487. in Jesus Christ

  488. but he's actually

  489. the hope

  490. of all the

  491. nations.

  492. Look with me,

  493. verses 5 to 8.

  494. By awesome deeds

  495. you answer us

  496. with righteousness,

  497. O God

  498. of our salvation,

  499. the hope

  500. of all the

  501. ends of the

  502. earth

  503. and of the

  504. farthest

  505. seas,

  506. the one

  507. who by his

  508. strength

  509. established

  510. the mountains

  511. being girded

  512. with might,

  513. who stills

  514. the roaring

  515. of the seas,

  516. the roaring

  517. of their waves,

  518. the tumult

  519. of the peoples,

  520. so that

  521. those who dwell

  522. at the ends

  523. of the earth

  524. are in awe

  525. at your signs.

  526. You make

  527. the going

  528. out of the

  529. morning

  530. and the

  531. evening

  532. to shout

  533. for joy.

  534. In this

  535. section,

  536. we see how

  537. God is active

  538. in the world

  539. from the

  540. farthest

  541. seas

  542. and the

  543. ends of

  544. the earth.

  545. 8b,

  546. verse 8b,

  547. so the second

  548. part of verse 8,

  549. you make

  550. the going

  551. out of the

  552. morning and

  553. the evening

  554. to shout

  555. for joy.

  556. That's a

  557. picture really

  558. of everything

  559. that stretches

  560. from east

  561. to west.

  562. It's a picture

  563. of the entire

  564. world.

  565. God is the

  566. hope of all

  567. people,

  568. verse 5,

  569. and all

  570. people who

  571. see the

  572. signs of

  573. God are

  574. in awe

  575. of him.

  576. I'll just

  577. mention something

  578. and maybe

  579. this is helpful

  580. for you guys

  581. in your own

  582. Bible reading.

  583. If you look

  584. at verse 5,

  585. the second

  586. part of it,

  587. it says,

  588. O God of our

  589. salvation,

  590. the hope

  591. of all,

  592. and here it

  593. is,

  594. the ends

  595. of the

  596. earth,

  597. and you

  598. go down

  599. to the

  600. first part

  601. of verse 8

  602. and it says

  603. this,

  604. so that those

  605. who dwell

  606. at the

  607. ends of

  608. the earth

  609. are in

  610. awe at

  611. your signs.

  612. Whenever you

  613. see the

  614. same

  615. sentence

  616. or the

  617. same set

  618. of words

  619. or a

  620. title or

  621. something like

  622. that,

  623. and it kind

  624. of sandwiches

  625. a section,

  626. that is

  627. something that

  628. should draw

  629. your attention

  630. to the

  631. message of

  632. a portion.

  633. So here,

  634. talking about

  635. the ends

  636. of the

  637. earth,

  638. this is a

  639. picture of

  640. God

  641. extending

  642. his grace

  643. not just

  644. to a region

  645. but to

  646. everywhere.

  647. And everything

  648. in between

  649. is going to

  650. fill in

  651. the gap.

  652. So when you

  653. read something

  654. like this,

  655. your ears

  656. perk up and

  657. you see the

  658. ends of

  659. the earth,

  660. you see at

  661. the end

  662. the ends

  663. of the

  664. earth,

  665. go back,

  666. take a look

  667. at what

  668. it says

  669. and see

  670. the meaning,

  671. what is

  672. God getting

  673. at when

  674. he says

  675. the ends

  676. of the

  677. earth.

  678. It's a bit

  679. of an

  680. aside,

  681. that's a

  682. little Bible

  683. reading tool

  684. that's very,

  685. very helpful.

  686. But here,

  687. it's just

  688. that.

  689. The ends

  690. of the

  691. earth is

  692. God's

  693. domain as

  694. well.

  695. He extends

  696. his grace

  697. across the

  698. known world.

  699. And what's

  700. really interesting

  701. here is that

  702. this is actually

  703. speaking of

  704. us.

  705. I mean,

  706. we,

  707. on one

  708. hand,

  709. we are

  710. the people

  711. of God.

  712. Whenever we

  713. read something

  714. about Israel,

  715. in many ways,

  716. we are

  717. Israelites

  718. ourselves in

  719. a spiritual

  720. way.

  721. We are the

  722. people of

  723. God.

  724. But we

  725. live six

  726. time zones

  727. away from

  728. Jerusalem here.

  729. We are very

  730. far.

  731. We are the

  732. ends of the

  733. earth here in

  734. Canada.

  735. And God

  736. has confirmed

  737. his word by

  738. this very church

  739. service this

  740. morning.

  741. God has

  742. extended his

  743. grace out

  744. to the

  745. ends of

  746. the earth.

  747. Friends,

  748. this is the,

  749. I mean,

  750. it might seem

  751. like we are

  752. the center of

  753. the earth,

  754. okay?

  755. You might

  756. feel that

  757. way.

  758. You have a

  759. complex.

  760. You are at

  761. the ends of

  762. the earth.

  763. And God

  764. here has

  765. extended his

  766. grace to

  767. the ends

  768. of the

  769. earth.

  770. It is a

  771. wonderful,

  772. beautiful picture

  773. of God

  774. confirming what

  775. the scriptures

  776. say.

  777. there is a

  778. specific focus

  779. here also on

  780. creation.

  781. Verses 6 and

  782. 7 speak of

  783. God creating

  784. the land and

  785. bringing chaos

  786. to order.

  787. Both themes

  788. that we see

  789. in Genesis,

  790. the opening

  791. chapters of

  792. Genesis.

  793. And we see

  794. two things

  795. about this,

  796. about God

  797. being creator.

  798. That God

  799. has left his

  800. fingerprints all

  801. over creation

  802. in terms of

  803. the complexity

  804. of creation.

  805. creation.

  806. But it also

  807. speaks of

  808. God's

  809. infiniteness.

  810. So here

  811. we see that

  812. especially if we

  813. go to verse

  814. 8 where it

  815. says that the

  816. ends of the

  817. earth will be

  818. in all the

  819. signs of

  820. God.

  821. That God

  822. has created

  823. mountains where

  824. there weren't

  825. any.

  826. He has

  827. calmed the

  828. seas that

  829. were raging.

  830. He has

  831. taken what

  832. didn't exist

  833. and made

  834. something out

  835. of it.

  836. He is the

  837. creator of

  838. all things.

  839. And just to

  840. put it in

  841. perspective,

  842. how infinite

  843. God is,

  844. I mean,

  845. don't fact

  846. check me.

  847. Maybe you

  848. should fact

  849. check me.

  850. I don't

  851. know.

  852. But in

  853. terms of

  854. what we

  855. have discovered

  856. in the

  857. known

  858. universe,

  859. if we

  860. were to

  861. take all

  862. of the

  863. universe,

  864. sorry,

  865. I'll say

  866. it this

  867. way,

  868. if we

  869. were to

  870. take all

  871. of the

  872. universe

  873. and kind

  874. of equal

  875. it to

  876. all of our

  877. oceans,

  878. the size

  879. of all

  880. of our

  881. oceans,

  882. we have

  883. discovered

  884. the equivalent

  885. to a 12

  886. ounce glass

  887. of water

  888. compared to

  889. the rest

  890. of the

  891. oceans.

  892. Universe,

  893. the cosmos,

  894. what God

  895. has created,

  896. I mean,

  897. does it have

  898. an end to it?

  899. I'm sure it

  900. does,

  901. but it's

  902. mind-boggling.

  903. It's impossible

  904. for us to

  905. understand.

  906. And God

  907. has,

  908. he has spoke

  909. this out

  910. into existence.

  911. existence.

  912. And this

  913. God,

  914. who has

  915. left his

  916. fingerprints

  917. all over

  918. creation,

  919. his

  920. infiniteness

  921. all over

  922. creation,

  923. what does

  924. he want

  925. to do?

  926. He wants

  927. to create

  928. in his

  929. image for

  930. the purpose

  931. of extending

  932. his love

  933. and his

  934. kindness

  935. and his

  936. grace to

  937. you.

  938. We are,

  939. just in terms

  940. of matter,

  941. like a

  942. nothing

  943. compared to

  944. the infiniteness

  945. of space.

  946. And yet,

  947. God

  948. welcomes you

  949. into his

  950. presence.

  951. He is making

  952. a way for

  953. you to

  954. come and

  955. enjoy his

  956. very presence.

  957. He has

  958. atoned for

  959. your sins

  960. and he

  961. calls us

  962. his own.

  963. This is the

  964. grace of God

  965. displayed to

  966. the ends

  967. of the earth.

  968. And really,

  969. it is the

  970. only hope

  971. that anybody

  972. truly has.

  973. The God

  974. of our

  975. salvation is

  976. the hope

  977. of all

  978. the earth

  979. which leads

  980. us also

  981. to an

  982. uncomfortable

  983. truth.

  984. If the

  985. triune

  986. God is

  987. the God

  988. of salvation

  989. and the

  990. hope of

  991. all the

  992. earth,

  993. that means

  994. other

  995. faiths and

  996. other

  997. philosophies

  998. that offer

  999. salvation and

  1000. claim to

  1001. satisfy our

  1002. deepest

  1003. longings,

  1004. they're

  1005. false.

  1006. Again,

  1007. that's a

  1008. very uncomfortable

  1009. take.

  1010. There's no

  1011. eternal hope

  1012. in religions

  1013. and philosophies

  1014. that cannot

  1015. atone for

  1016. sins,

  1017. that do

  1018. not look

  1019. to Christ

  1020. as the

  1021. once and

  1022. for all

  1023. sacrifice

  1024. on our

  1025. behalf.

  1026. God of

  1027. God,

  1028. very God

  1029. of very

  1030. God.

  1031. Who else

  1032. can still

  1033. the roaring

  1034. seas?

  1035. Who else

  1036. can still

  1037. the tumult

  1038. of the

  1039. peoples

  1040. in our

  1041. hearts,

  1042. our souls?

  1043. Who can

  1044. bring an

  1045. end to

  1046. all the

  1047. violence,

  1048. an end to

  1049. all the

  1050. oppression,

  1051. an end to

  1052. all the

  1053. slavery and

  1054. poverty and

  1055. idolatry

  1056. that finds

  1057. itself growing

  1058. in measures

  1059. in our

  1060. world?

  1061. And it's

  1062. the hope

  1063. of the

  1064. earth,

  1065. it's

  1066. Jesus

  1067. Christ.

  1068. And we

  1069. don't see

  1070. that end

  1071. to the

  1072. oppression and

  1073. the violence

  1074. and the

  1075. slavery and

  1076. the poverty

  1077. and the

  1078. idolatry,

  1079. but it

  1080. will come

  1081. to pass.

  1082. And this

  1083. actually leads

  1084. us to our

  1085. third and

  1086. final section,

  1087. looking at

  1088. how the

  1089. grace of

  1090. God is

  1091. greater and

  1092. bigger than

  1093. we could

  1094. ever have

  1095. imagined.

  1096. Look with

  1097. me, verses

  1098. 9-13.

  1099. It says

  1100. this,

  1101. You visit

  1102. the earth

  1103. and water

  1104. it, you

  1105. greatly

  1106. enrich it.

  1107. The river

  1108. of God

  1109. is full

  1110. of water.

  1111. You provide

  1112. their grain,

  1113. for so you

  1114. have prepared

  1115. it.

  1116. You water

  1117. its furrows

  1118. abundantly,

  1119. settling its

  1120. ridges,

  1121. softening it

  1122. with showers,

  1123. blessing its

  1124. growth.

  1125. You crown

  1126. the year

  1127. with your

  1128. bounty,

  1129. your wagon

  1130. tracks overflow

  1131. with abundance.

  1132. The pastures

  1133. of the wilderness

  1134. overflow,

  1135. the hills

  1136. gird themselves

  1137. with joy,

  1138. the meadows

  1139. clothe themselves

  1140. with flocks,

  1141. the valleys

  1142. deck themselves

  1143. with grain,

  1144. the joy,

  1145. the shout,

  1146. they shout

  1147. and sing

  1148. together for

  1149. joy.

  1150. This section,

  1151. again, it might

  1152. seem kind of

  1153. out of place.

  1154. We've moved

  1155. from the house

  1156. of God to a

  1157. snapshot of God

  1158. as creator,

  1159. and now we find

  1160. ourselves in the

  1161. harvest.

  1162. So how is this

  1163. connected to the

  1164. other two sections,

  1165. and how is this

  1166. the answer

  1167. to all of

  1168. the brokenness

  1169. in the world?

  1170. All the

  1171. heartache,

  1172. all of the

  1173. evil,

  1174. all of the

  1175. pain.

  1176. It's connected

  1177. in at least

  1178. three ways.

  1179. It's connected

  1180. to the previous

  1181. section as it

  1182. tells us that

  1183. God doesn't

  1184. only create the

  1185. world, but he

  1186. sustains it.

  1187. He is actively

  1188. involved in the

  1189. ongoing life

  1190. of his creation.

  1191. God doesn't

  1192. create as a

  1193. watchmaker would

  1194. create, where he

  1195. creates all the

  1196. components, he

  1197. puts them

  1198. together, he

  1199. sets the watch

  1200. and then leaves

  1201. it, because it's

  1202. going to go on

  1203. whether he

  1204. touches it or

  1205. not.

  1206. He's not like a

  1207. watchmaker in

  1208. terms of how he

  1209. creates.

  1210. Instead, he

  1211. creates everything

  1212. and everything

  1213. has its being

  1214. held together

  1215. and has its

  1216. being in him.

  1217. He sustains

  1218. everything.

  1219. He cares for

  1220. and nourishes

  1221. all that he has

  1222. created.

  1223. He gives and

  1224. sustains life.

  1225. The second

  1226. thing that

  1227. connects this

  1228. section to the

  1229. previous section

  1230. is that Jesus

  1231. has described

  1232. the evangelization

  1233. of all people

  1234. to a harvest.

  1235. And we see

  1236. that in Matthew

    Matthew 9 chapter mention

  1237. chapter 9,

  1238. starting in

  1239. verse 35,

  1240. and it says

  1241. this,

  1242. And Jesus

  1243. went throughout

  1244. all the cities

  1245. and villages,

  1246. teaching in

  1247. their synagogues

  1248. and proclaiming

  1249. the gospel of

  1250. the kingdom,

  1251. and healing

  1252. every disease

  1253. and every

  1254. affliction.

  1255. When he saw

  1256. the crowds,

  1257. he had

  1258. compassion for

  1259. them, because

  1260. they were harassed

  1261. and helpless,

  1262. like sheep

  1263. without a shepherd.

  1264. Then he said

  1265. to his disciples,

  1266. The harvest is

  1267. plentiful, but

  1268. the laborers are

  1269. few.

  1270. Therefore, pray

  1271. earnestly to the

  1272. Lord of the harvest

  1273. to send out laborers

  1274. into the harvest.

  1275. The God, the Father,

  1276. draws all people

  1277. to his Son

  1278. through his Spirit.

  1279. He has compassion

  1280. on the crowds,

  1281. compassion on all

  1282. people.

  1283. Why?

  1284. Because they are

  1285. hopeless.

  1286. They are helpless.

  1287. They are like sheep

  1288. without a shepherd

  1289. who cannot defend

  1290. themselves, who

  1291. cannot find clean

  1292. water or lush

  1293. meadows to eat.

  1294. He desires to see

  1295. a rich and bountiful

  1296. harvest of the souls

  1297. of men and women,

  1298. young and old,

  1299. and he draws all

  1300. people from the

  1301. farthest corners

  1302. of the earth,

  1303. including Canada.

  1304. He causes grain to

  1305. grow where it ought

1306. not to grow, which is

  1307. this beautiful picture

  1308. of God doing only

  1309. what God can do,

  1310. making the impossible

  1311. happen.

  1312. Flocks of sheep

  1313. thrive where they

  1314. ought not to.

  1315. He really, truly

  1316. does the impossible.

  1317. Finally, this section

  1318. connects to the

  1319. previous section

  1320. because what we see

  1321. here isn't just

  1322. an annual harvest,

  1323. but a picture of

1324. the end of the age

  1325. or the eschaton

  1326. or the culmination

  1327. of all salvation.

  1328. And this is where

  1329. it answers the question

1330. of the problem of evil

  1331. ultimately.

  1332. The river of God

  1333. that is mentioned

  1334. here, where is it?

  1335. In verse 9,

  1336. the river of God

  1337. is full of water.

  1338. Now that might seem

  1339. very much like a

  1340. redundancy.

  1341. The river of God

  1342. is full with water.

1343. Well, of course it is.

  1344. But, it isn't a

  1345. redundancy.

  1346. It is a picture

  1347. of something that we

  1348. see elsewhere in

  1349. Scripture.

1350. In fact, it is a

  1351. picture of the

  1352. healing and salvation

  1353. that comes to the

  1354. nations that only

  1355. can come from God

  1356. Himself.

1357. And we see it at

  1358. the very end of

  1359. the Bible.

  1360. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 22 chapter mention

  1361. 22, which is a

  1362. picture of all

  1363. things being made

  1364. right.

  1365. All evil being

  1366. overcome.

  1367. All sin being

  1368. destroyed.

  1369. Our enemy being

  1370. cast away and us

  1371. dwelling in God's

  1372. presence forever.

1373. And this is what it

  1374. says.

  1375. Revelation chapter

    Revelation 22:1–5

  1376. 22, verses 1 to 5.

  1377. Then the angel

  1378. showed me the river

  1379. of the water of

  1380. life.

  1381. There it is.

  1382. bright as crystal

  1383. flowing from the

  1384. throne of God and

  1385. out of the Lamb

  1386. through the middle

  1387. of the streets of

  1388. the city.

  1389. It's the heavenly

  1390. city.

  1391. Also on either side

  1392. of the river, the

  1393. tree of life with

  1394. its twelve kinds of

  1395. fruits yielding its

  1396. fruit each month.

  1397. The leaves of the

  1398. tree were for the

  1399. healing of the

  1400. nations.

  1401. No longer will

  1402. there be anything

  1403. accursed.

  1404. But the throne of

1405. God and of the Lamb

1406. will be in it and

  1407. His servants will

  1408. worship Him.

  1409. They will see His

  1410. face.

  1411. That's a proximity.

  1412. Talking about our

  1413. proximity to God.

  1414. They will see His

  1415. face and His name

  1416. will be on their

  1417. foreheads and night

  1418. will be no more.

  1419. They will need no

  1420. light of lamp or

  1421. sun for the Lord

  1422. God will be their

  1423. light and they will

  1424. reign forever and

  1425. ever.

  1426. Friends, this is a

  1427. picture of abundance

  1428. and of perfection and

  1429. of true utopia and

  1430. satisfaction.

  1431. Especially verses

  1432. 11 to 13 we see

  1433. this.

1434. It has all of this

  1435. in view.

  1436. A ridiculous haul.

  1437. A bounty that

  1438. points to richness

  1439. that is overflowing.

  1440. Look in verse 11

  1441. and on.

  1442. You crown the

  1443. year with your

  1444. bounty.

  1445. And I love this

  1446. imagery.

  1447. Your wagon tracks

  1448. overflow with

  1449. abundance.

  1450. It's like a wagon

  1451. going through as

  1452. people are harvesting

  1453. fruit or grain.

  1454. It's just getting

  1455. piled on.

  1456. It can't hold

  1457. anymore.

  1458. It just falls down.

  1459. It's a harvest that

  1460. is completely

  1461. overflowing.

  1462. It's a picture of

  1463. bounty.

  1464. Something that we

  1465. could never hope

  1466. for but we

  1467. desperately need.

  1468. It continues on.

  1469. The pastures of the

  1470. wilderness overflow.

  1471. The hills gird

  1472. themselves with joy.

  1473. Meadows clothe

  1474. themselves with

  1475. flock.

  1476. Valleys deck

  1477. themselves with

  1478. grain.

  1479. They shout and

  1480. sing together for

  1481. joy.

  1482. A picture of all

  1483. things made right.

  1484. And that age to

  1485. come can only be

  1486. through Jesus

  1487. Christ.

  1488. Through the cross

  1489. of Christ.

  1490. Jesus himself is

  1491. the source of

  1492. life.

  1493. On the cross

  1494. Jesus is strung

  1495. up as a

  1496. sacrifice for us

  1497. and out of his

  1498. side, out of his

  1499. hands, feet,

  1500. brow, flow life

  1501. giving blood that

  1502. so nourishes and

  1503. feeds and grows

  1504. all them that put

  1505. their faith and

  1506. trust and hope in

  1507. Jesus.

  1508. His life poured

  1509. out so that our

  1510. life may flourish.

  1511. And that is the

  1512. good news of the

  1513. cross of Christ.

  1514. Friends, we are

  1515. saved for eternity

  1516. to enjoy the

  1517. harvest with the

  1518. Lord of the

  1519. harvest.

  1520. The life that is

  1521. offered to anyone

  1522. that would hear

  1523. his voice, forsake

  1524. their ways, and

  1525. follow after him.

  1526. Friends, this is

  1527. not a life of

  1528. lack.

  1529. It is not a

  1530. life of lack.

1531. It is a life of

  1532. bounty and

  1533. abundance and

  1534. joy that is

  1535. hard to comprehend.

  1536. But it is ours,

1537. in a sense, for the

  1538. taking.

  1539. It's a beautiful

  1540. extension of his

  1541. goodness, loving

  1542. kindness of his

  1543. grace that he

  1544. gives to his

  1545. people.

  1546. Father, help us

  1547. to be people that

  1548. look to you for

  1549. true satisfaction.

  1550. Lord, we are

  1551. people that so

  1552. quickly forget and

  1553. look to other

  1554. things to satisfy,

  1555. other things to

  1556. heal, other things

  1557. to atone for our

  1558. sins, to distract

  1559. from the

  1560. difficulties.

  1561. But Lord, help us

  1562. to come afresh to

  1563. you, to trust in

  1564. you, and to look

  1565. to you.

  1566. Lord, that we

  1567. would trust in the

  1568. life-giving blood

  1569. of your Son poured

1570. out for us so that

  1571. we may have eternal

  1572. life.

  1573. Lord, we ask that

  1574. you would help us

  1575. to trust in him.

  1576. And Lord, as we

  1577. go our way this

  1578. morning, Lord, help

1579. us also to be a

  1580. joyful people and

  1581. extend that invitation

  1582. to others around us,

  1583. to our friends and

  1584. our family, our

  1585. co-workers, our

  1586. neighbors, the

  1587. strangers that we

  1588. interact with, all

  1589. those that we may

  1590. come in contact

  1591. with.

  1592. Lord, remind us

  1593. constantly that you

  1594. are a God of

  1595. bounty.

  1596. And this is

  1597. because of Christ

  1598. Jesus we pray.

  1599. Amen.

  1600. Amen.
