  1. Father in heaven, we humbly come before you as we open up your word, as we consider how

  2. Judas and the way he lived his life, how he betrayed your blessed son, and how he was

  3. unrepentant, and we consider his demise, Lord, help us to ultimately flee to you, Lord, that

  4. we would take heed, take and heed these words in front of us, and that it would go by your

  5. spirit deep into our heart as a warning to us, but Lord, that we wouldn't simply be afraid,

  6. but we would see godly fear, but also, Lord, we would see the great benefit of what it means

  7. to be your child, to be your son or your daughter, that it is truly the best thing, the most

  8. right thing we could ever do, and it is offered to us because of what Christ has done on the

  9. cross.

  10. So, Lord, help us to be humble, help us to have hearts ready to receive, and we pray this in

  11. Christ's name, amen.

  12. Have you ever seen that optical illusion that, depending on the perspective you have, you

  13. either see a young and elegant woman or a haggard old lady?

  14. You guys know what picture that is?

  15. I put it on the overhead, we don't have an overhead.

  16. Maybe I'll include it in the Sunday follow-up, but it's a remarkable picture, and then people

  17. have done other pictures that the one perspective, you know, looks like, I don't know, one thing,

  18. and the other perspective looks totally different.

  19. It was actually, it finds, I looked it up, it finds its genesis in, like, the turn of the century,

  20. about the turn of the century, but it was popularized by a British cartoonist named William

  21. Eli Hill in the 1910s, and he named the picture my wife and my mother-in-law.

  22. That is, that is something else.

  23. My mother-in-law, that's not, does not go for me.

  24. I love my mother-in-law, she's lovely.

  25. But it's so interesting how you can have one picture, and you can see only the one image,

  26. and yet, you have to almost take a step back and readjust to see the second image.

  27. But what you can't do, is you can't see both images at the exact same time.

  28. And if you can, I don't know, maybe you have a trick, but by and large, you can't see both

  29. images at the same time.

  30. Jesus has conquered all.

  31. He has died on the cross.

  32. The death tried to consume him, and he uses death itself to destroy death, by rising again

  33. after three days in the grave.

  34. And he hasn't just defeated death by rising from the grave, but he ascends into heaven,

  35. and it is this wonderful picture of Jesus and his victory, his victory over sin and death

  36. and evil.

  37. And he offers this salvation to all people.

  38. And it is our very heart's desire to know and be known, to love and be loved for all

  39. of eternity, and this is precisely what he offers in the cross.

  40. And yet, there are many people who do not see this when they look at Jesus, but rather see

  41. the cross as folly, as hate-filled, as bigoted and even dangerous.

  42. How on earth can this one beautiful thing, the cross, be at once for us and those that

  43. are being saved, those that are being drawn to him?

  44. How can it look so beautiful, and then others, it can be such an object of scorn?

  45. The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 1.18, he also repeats it in a few other places in his

  46. letters.

  47. He'll say this,

  48. For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being

  49. saved, it is the power of God.

  50. Like the young lady, old woman, optical illusion, Christ is either the wonderful Savior or he's

  51. terribly problematic.

  52. He cannot be both.

  53. This also is actually the same from Christ's perspective.

  54. We are either wheat or tares, we are either sheep or goats, either we are his friends or

  55. we are his enemies.

  56. We cannot occupy a middle ground, for there is none.

  57. Again, the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being

  58. saved, it is the power of God.

  59. Friends, this is a difficult teaching.

  60. We like the nativity Christ who's meek and mild.

  61. We don't necessarily like the knight clad in white who will defeat all his foes with

  62. the word of his mouth.

  63. And yet, this is the ultimate picture of Christ in the book of Revelation, the conquering knight

  64. who has defeated all his foes.

  65. It's an interesting question to ask.

  66. Do you find yourself as a friend of God or as his enemy?

  67. We find ourselves in Acts chapter 1, the second part of Acts chapter 1, with his disciples

Acts 1 chapter mention Acts 1 chapter mention

  68. in Jerusalem.

  69. They are devoting themselves to prayer.

  70. They are united in purpose.

  71. And they are obeying Jesus in waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

  72. And our section covers the 10 days after the ascension and before Pentecost.

  73. 10 days for when Jesus ascends to heaven and when the Holy Spirit comes down.

  74. And what's interesting, in 10 days worth of happenings, this is the only story that is recorded

  75. in those 10 days.

  76. Maybe there is other significant things that have happened or that happened in that time,

  77. but we have no idea.

  78. Luke here, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, records only this one story.

  79. So it's important.

  80. It's not merely a narrative filler, but something critical to help us to understand what it means

  81. to be either a friend of God or what it means to be an enemy of God.

  82. So to help us understand this, you know, I didn't come up with any lovely points, but

  83. we're going to look at three people, in a sense.

  84. We're going to look at Judas, who is the traitor.

  85. We're going to look at Peter, who is the friend.

  86. And ultimately, we're going to look at Christ, who is the knower of all hearts.

  87. So why don't we jump into our first, take a look at our first person, Judas, the traitor,

  88. and see what we can learn from this section.

  89. So look with me, Acts chapter 1, starting in the 15th verse.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  90. We'll go 15 to 20 here.

  91. When they returned to Jerusalem from the mount, called Olivet, oh, verse 12, I'll go down to 15.

  92. In those days, Peter stood up among the brothers.

  93. The company of persons was in all, about 120, and said,

  94. Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas,

  95. who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

  96. For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in the ministry, in this ministry.

  97. Verses 18 and 19 seem to be Luke's commentary in this.

  98. And this is what he says,

  99. Now this man, speaking of Judas, acquired a field.

  100. With the reward of his wickedness and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle,

  101. and all his bowels gushed out.

  102. And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  103. so that the field was called in their own language,

  104. Ekeldama, that is, the field of blood.

  105. Verse 20.

  106. This is Peter now.

  107. For it is written in the book of Psalms,

  108. May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it,

  109. and let another take his office.

  110. Quoting from Psalm 69 and 109, respectively.

  111. Judas Iscariot, he was one of the twelve.

  112. He was called by Jesus.

  113. And yet, he became, as Peter called him,

  114. the guide to those who arrested Jesus.

  115. He was offended at the scandalous nature of the good news of Jesus Christ,

  116. and as such became an active enemy agent.

  117. Quite the turnaround from a trusted, close disciple of Jesus.

  118. He was one of the twelve.

  119. He was the inner circle,

  120. Jesus had many followers,

  121. but he was the inner circle of Jesus' disciples.

  122. And then he became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

  123. And what was his fate?

  124. In the Gospels, it says that he killed himself.

  125. And yet, here, it says that he bought a field and fell headlong into it.

  126. Now, there is a discrepancy,

  127. at least from the Gospels to Acts,

  128. and there is, I think, a fine way of harmonizing the two.

  129. I think I'll end up,

  130. by the way, I'll put it in the Sunday follow-up.

  131. I hope you guys got that this week.

  132. I'm trying it out.

  133. If it works, great.

  134. If it's not so helpful,

  135. we can scrap it for something else.

  136. But I'm not going to talk about how

  137. the Gospel accounts of Luke's,

  138. sorry, of Judas' suicide,

  139. how it harmonizes with what Luke says here in Acts chapter 1.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  140. But nevertheless,

  141. Luke records here that Judas bought a field

  142. with the blood money he used to betray Jesus,

  143. and he fell headlong in the field,

  144. and his guts poured out,

  145. his bowels poured out.

  146. So the question,

  147. it's an interesting question.

  148. Why would Luke break from the Gospel narratives

  149. to talk about Judas hanging himself?

  150. This is not in the Gospel narratives.

  151. Why does he mention it?

  152. And I think there's a really interesting answer.

  153. In fact, Luke,

  154. he is constantly,

  155. and we'll see this throughout Luke,

  156. he constantly connects

  157. what's happening with the church

  158. with the Old Testament.

  159. There's allusions constantly

  160. to the Old Testament text.

  161. And I think this is one of them.

  162. So we see this,

  163. a similar story,

  164. in 2 Samuel chapter 20

    2 Samuel 20 chapter mention

  165. with Joab.

  166. If we have any Bible scholars

  167. and they know who Joab was,

  168. he was the former general

  169. of King David's army.

  170. He was trusted by King David.

  171. And Joab betrays David.

  172. He kills two people

  173. that David did not authorize.

  174. It was a form of betrayal.

  175. But the second person he killed

  176. was Amasa,

  177. the general that was going to take over

  178. for him,

  179. that in a sense,

  180. Joab was looked over for Amasa.

  181. What does he do?

  182. In 2 Samuel chapter 20,

    2 Samuel 20 chapter mention

  183. to sum it up,

  184. he greets Amasa with a kiss.

  185. And without Amasa knowing,

  186. he has a knife on his left side

  187. and he uses it

  188. to stab Amasa in the stomach.

  189. And it says that

  190. Amasa's intestines poured out

  191. and he died on the road.

  192. He betrayed Amasa

  193. and really King David with a kiss.

  194. And then we have this interesting bit

  195. about the way Amasa died,

  196. the one he betrayed.

  197. Joab was a traitor

  198. and he killed in a cowardly way.

  199. And later on in 1 Kings chapter 2,

    1 Kings 2 chapter mention

  200. we see that he is killed

  201. in a just way,

  202. but in a coward's,

  203. he gets what's coming to him

  204. in a very cowardly way himself.

  205. He cowers and he is killed

  206. at the command of King Solomon.

  207. So with Judas,

  208. the one who would betray

  209. the King of Kings with a kiss,

  210. it's interesting.

  211. And imagine with me here,

  212. if truly Luke is connecting

  213. this story of Judas

  214. to the Old Testament betrayer,

  215. Joab,

  216. we see a betrayal of the King

  217. with a kiss.

  218. And although Judas doesn't take a knife

  219. and thrust it through Jesus' stomach,

  220. we end up having Judas suffer

  221. the same fate

  222. that Joab inflicted on Amasa.

  223. That is to say

  224. that retribution happened

  225. for Judas

  226. because he was a coward,

  227. because he was a betrayer,

  228. because he was a traitor.

  229. He would suffer a fate

  230. similar to the one

  231. that Joab visited upon Amasa.

  232. Retribution enacted.

  233. And retribution might seem

  234. like something that

  235. wouldn't necessarily be condoned

  236. by the Lord in Scripture,

  237. but in this case,

  238. it's a godly thing

  239. for those who commit injustice.

  240. It is an important thing

  241. to stop somebody

  242. from the cycle

  243. of committing injustice.

  244. In fact,

  245. St. Augustine will expand this.

  246. The idea of loving your enemy

  247. can't actually happen

  248. unless you're willing

  249. to exact justice

  250. on your enemy's enemy.

  251. We are seeing this happen

  252. with Judas here.

  253. But why are we talking

  254. about punishment

  255. when Jesus offers forgiveness?

  256. Why does Judas,

  257. who is a betrayer,

  258. suffer the fate

  259. of one who was betrayed?

  260. Why does Judas

  261. not get the same fate,

  262. in a sense,

  263. as Peter?

  264. Did Peter not betray

  265. Jesus like Judas did?

  266. I mean,

  267. think about it.

  268. Peter

  269. swears,

  270. I swear to God

  271. I will follow you,

  272. Jesus,

  273. to your death.

  274. And what happens?

  275. He flees

  276. and he has three chances

  277. to make it right

  278. and

  279. he messes that up as well.

  280. He betrays Jesus.

  281. And yet,

  282. Judas

  283. has his guts spilled out

  284. and he's buried

  285. and Peter

  286. is leading the church.

  287. Where is Judas'

  288. forgiveness?

  289. Why are we speaking

  290. of his death

  291. and not,

  292. and his replacement

  293. and not talking about

  294. how Judas

  295. is with the twelve?

  296. Should forgiveness

  297. not be extended to him?

  298. Judas is an enemy

  299. of Christ.

  300. He is one who refuses

  301. to put down his weapons.

  302. He is one

  303. who does not recognize

  304. his sin

  305. and throw himself

  306. at the mercy of Christ.

  307. He is not one

  308. who humbles himself

  309. and recognizes

  310. that he needs to live

  311. under the lordship

  312. of Christ.

  313. It's not just a matter

  314. of indifference

  315. but

  316. a critical aspect

  317. of what it means

  318. to submit

  319. to the one true God.

  320. Judas

  321. does not

  322. ask for forgiveness

  323. and as such

  324. he continues

  325. to live

  326. at least in his own life

  327. on the throne

  328. of Christ.

  329. He is king

  330. of his own castle.

  331. Judas

  332. led Jesus

  333. into the hands

  334. of those

  335. who wished

  336. to kill him

  337. because he was

  338. deep in his pride,

  339. he was deep

  340. in his resentment

  341. and he was deep

  342. in his greed.

  343. And like Joab,

  344. Judas

  345. betrays Jesus.

  346. Judas

  347. and like Joab,

  348. Judas

  349. tries to undo

  350. his treachery

  351. by his own hand.

  352. I encourage you guys

  353. to read the story

  354. in 1 Kings 2.

  355. It's a type

  356. of self-justification

  357. and like Joab,

  358. Judas refused

  359. to go to the only one

  360. who could

  361. redeem him.

  362. Pride

  363. and self-justification

  364. will always cause

  365. a heart

  366. of stone

  367. to remain stone

  368. and cause

  369. the enemy of God

  370. to remain

  371. an enemy of God.

  372. Friends,

  373. when we try

  374. to cover up

  375. our sin

  376. or the sin

  377. of others

  378. to deny

  379. its effects

  380. in our lives

  381. to justify

  382. the motives

  383. of sin

  384. excuse the offense

  385. relativize it

  386. so that it is

  387. no longer a sin

  388. we call Christ

  389. a liar.

  390. We deny

  391. God his place

  392. as creator

  393. and king

  394. and we make

  395. ourselves

  396. keep ourselves

  397. make ourselves

  398. an enemy

  399. of God.

  400. And let me

  401. just say this

  402. friends

  403. this is not

  404. an enemy

  405. you want.

  406. God judges

  407. so often

  408. in a passive

  409. way

  410. by handing

  411. us over

  412. to our rebellion

  413. so that we

  414. will suffer

  415. the natural

  416. and inevitable

  417. consequences

  418. of our actions.

  419. Joab lived

  420. by the sword

  421. and what happened?

  422. He died

  423. by the sword.

  424. Judas

  425. was greedy

  426. he was prideful

  427. and he died

  428. unredeemed.

  429. In the end

  430. we will get

  431. our heart's

  432. true desire

  433. in our pride.

  434. What do I mean

  435. by this?

  436. All too often

  437. God leaves us

  438. to our own

  439. devices

  440. and if we

  441. are not

  442. looking to

  443. God

  444. who is the

  445. creator of life

  446. who knows

  447. the way

  448. we ought to

  449. live

  450. we will

  451. inevitably

  452. go down

  453. the road

  454. to death.

  455. there's not

  456. multiple ways

  457. that God

  458. has designed

  459. but only

  460. one way

  461. because he

  462. is the

  463. creator

  464. and he

  465. is good

  466. and he

  467. desires to

  468. bless

  469. and to

  470. redeem

  471. and to

  472. see his

  473. creation

  474. flourish.

  475. So if we

  476. choose to

  477. avoid such

  478. a way

  479. of living

  480. we will

  481. inevitably

  482. see destruction

  483. and pain

  484. in our own

  485. lives.

  486. So this

  487. passive

  488. judgment

  489. C.S.

  490. Lewis

  491. in the

  492. great

  493. divorce

  494. he describes

  495. it like

  496. this

  497. there are

  498. only two

  499. kinds of

  500. people in

  501. the end

  502. those who

  503. say to

  504. God

  505. thy will

  506. be done

  507. and those

  508. to whom

  509. God says

  510. in the

  511. end

  512. thy will

  513. be done

  514. all that

  515. are in

  516. hell

  517. choose it

  518. without

  519. that self

  520. choice

  521. there could

  522. be no

  523. hell

  524. no soul

  525. that seriously

  526. and constantly

  527. desires joy

  528. will ever

  529. miss it

  530. those who

  531. seek

  532. find

  533. those who

  534. knock

  535. it is

  536. opened

  537. Judas

  538. although

  539. ridden

  540. with guilt

  541. ultimately

  542. wants his

  543. will

  544. over

  545. Christ's

  546. will

  547. and we

  548. see a

  549. bit of

  550. that

  551. in

  552. the

  553. second

  554. part

  555. of

  556. verse

  557. 25

  558. when

  559. Peter

  560. he's

  561. talking

  562. about

  563. Matthias

  564. or the

  565. one

  566. that

  567. they

  568. would

  569. pick

  570. to

  571. replace

  572. him

  573. and he

  574. says

  575. this

  576. to

  577. take

  578. the

  579. place

  580. in

  581. this

  582. ministry

  583. and

  584. apostleship

  585. from

  586. which

  587. Judas

  588. turned

  589. aside

  590. to go

  591. in his

  592. own

  593. place

  594. to do

  595. his

  596. own

  597. thing

  598. to go

  599. his own

  600. way

  601. Judas

  602. ridden

  603. with

  604. guilt

  605. ultimately

  606. wants

  607. his

  608. will

  609. over

  610. Christ

  611. he's

  612. not

  613. willing

  614. to bend

  615. his knee

  616. and as

  617. such

  618. suffers

  619. a traitor's

  620. fate

  621. it

  622. it is

  623. a

  624. terribly

  625. sad

  626. thing

  627. and it

  628. makes

  629. you

  630. wonder

  631. and it's

  632. speculation

  633. makes you

  634. wonder

  635. if

  636. Judas

  637. if things

  638. could have

  639. been different

  640. for him

  641. but they

  642. weren't

  643. he

  644. refused

  645. to call

  646. out to

  647. God

  648. for

  649. forgiveness

  650. there's

  651. this whole

  652. other side

  653. bit

  654. here

  655. that

  656. I mean

  657. because

  658. it was

  659. prophesied

  660. it speaks

  661. in a sense

  662. of

  663. God's

  664. providence

  665. and how

  666. does that

  667. interact

  668. with our

  669. free will

  670. maybe that'll

  671. make the

  672. Sunday

  673. follow up

  674. as well

  675. but that's

  676. not going

  677. to be

  678. an aside

  679. I'm

  680. willing

  681. to take

  682. this

  683. morning

  684. but it's

  685. a very

  686. excellent

  687. question

  688. Judas

  689. has suffered

  690. a traitor's

  691. fate

  692. well how

  693. about the

  694. traitor

  695. Peter

  696. we

  697. I

  698. referenced

  699. him

  700. moments

  701. ago

  702. but what

  703. separates

  704. Judas

  705. the betrayer

  706. from

  707. Peter

  708. the betrayer

  709. Peter

  710. is equally

  711. a betrayer

  712. remember

  713. he denies

  714. Christ

  715. three times

  716. and yet

  717. here he is

  718. standing up

  719. amongst

  720. not just

  721. the eleven

  722. but the

  723. hundred and twenty

  724. he in a sense

  725. is the leader

  726. of the church

  727. and he is the one

  728. saying

  729. we need to

  730. fulfill scripture

  731. we need to

  732. get a twelfth

  733. we need to

  734. see this thing

  735. come to pass

  736. and we see

  737. in a sense

  738. what marks

  739. Peter

  740. is the

  741. the

  742. the

  743. besetting

  744. sin

  745. of

  746. what marks

  747. Peter

  748. is the

  749. opposite

  750. of the

  751. besetting

  752. sin

  753. of

  754. Judas

  755. Peter

  756. constantly

  757. would

  758. humble

  759. himself

  760. before

  761. almighty

  762. God

  763. he

  764. constantly

  765. cried out

  766. to Christ

  767. for mercy

  768. in fact

  769. what greater

  770. person

  771. would there

  772. be to

  773. lead the

  774. church

  775. than

  776. Peter

  777. who

  778. sinned

  779. much

  780. but was

  781. forgiven

  782. much

  783. and as

  784. such

  785. loved

  786. much

  787. who

  788. fell

  789. worse

  790. than

  791. Peter

  792. amongst

  793. the eleven

  794. that

  795. remained

  796. none

  797. Judas

  798. Judas'

  799. replacement

  800. had to

  801. be

  802. chosen

  803. and

  804. it

  805. had

  806. to

  807. be

  808. one

  809. who

  810. was

  811. witness

  812. to the

  813. entirety

  814. of

  815. Jesus'

  816. ministry

  817. from

  818. John's

  819. baptism

  820. to

  821. the

  822. resurrection

  823. that's

  824. what it

  825. says

  826. in

  827. verses

  828. 21

  829. to

  830. 23

  831. so

  832. one

  833. of

  834. the

  835. men

  836. who

  837. have

  838. accompanied

  839. us

  840. from

  841. all

  842. the

  843. time

  844. that

  845. the

  846. Lord

  847. Jesus

  848. went

  849. in

  850. and

  851. out

  852. among

  853. us

  854. beginning

  855. from

  856. the

  857. baptism

  858. of

  859. John

  860. until

  861. the

  862. day

  863. when

  864. he

  865. was

  866. taken

  867. up

  868. from

  869. us

  870. one

  871. of

  872. these

  873. men

  874. must

  875. become

  876. with

  877. us

  878. a

  879. witness

  880. to

  881. the

  882. resurrection

  883. that's

  884. why

  885. I

  886. think

  887. if

  888. you've

  889. heard

  890. the

  891. apostle

  892. Paul

  893. is

  894. the

  895. true

  896. 12th

  897. apostle

  898. or the

  899. true

  900. 12th

  901. disciple

  902. and

  903. Matthias

  904. we

  905. never

  906. really

  907. hear

  908. of

  909. him

  910. again

  911. I

  912. would

  913. say

  914. that

  915. based

  916. on

  917. verses

  918. 21

  919. to

  920. 23

  921. it

  922. truly

  923. is

  924. Matthias

  925. in

  926. fact

  927. we

  928. don't

  929. really

  930. hear

  931. much

  932. of

  933. any

  934. of

  935. the

  936. disciples

  937. apart

  938. from

  939. Peter

  940. James

  941. and

  942. John

  943. it's

  944. a bit

  945. of a

  946. side

  947. note

  948. but

  949. anyways

  950. what's

  951. happening

  952. here

  953. is

  954. the

  955. 12th

  956. disciple

  957. needs

  958. to

  959. be

  960. picked

  961. because

  962. what

  963. we

  964. see

  965. here

  966. is

  967. that

  968. the

  969. church

  970. is

  971. really

  972. a

  973. reconstitution

  974. of

  975. Israel

  976. the

  977. people

  978. of

  979. God

  980. it's

  981. in a

  982. sense

  983. a

  984. new

  985. and

  986. expanded

  987. Israel

  988. 12

  989. disciples

  990. needed

  991. to be

  992. present

  993. as the

  994. church

  995. was

  996. birthed

  997. and

  998. in a

  999. sense

  1000. walked

  1001. into

  1002. the

  1003. promised

  1004. land

  1005. in the

  1006. same

  1007. way

  1008. that

  1009. the

  1010. 12

  1011. tribes

  1012. entered

  1013. into

  1014. the

  1015. promised

  1016. land

  1017. after

  1018. captivity

  1019. these

  1020. 12

  1021. would

  1022. lead

  1023. the

  1024. church

  1025. by

  1026. the

  1027. power

  1028. of

  1029. the

  1030. Holy

  1031. Spirit

  1032. and

  1033. they

  1034. would

  1035. continue

  1036. as we

  1037. found

  1038. out

  1039. last

  1040. week

  1041. that

  1042. in

  1043. the

  1044. the

  1045. ministry

  1046. of

  1047. Christ

  1048. Jesus

  1049. so

  1050. ultimately

  1051. what is

  1052. to mark

  1053. the

  1054. 12

  1055. apostles

  1056. and

  1057. therefore

  1058. what is

  1059. to mark

  1060. the

  1061. church

  1062. is a

  1063. deep

  1064. humility

  1065. in

  1066. Christ

  1067. a

  1068. genuine

  1069. faith

  1070. not

  1071. perfect

  1072. genuine

  1073. doesn't

  1074. necessarily

  1075. equal

  1076. perfect

  1077. but a

  1078. genuine

  1079. faith

  1080. in the

  1081. lordship

  1082. of

  1083. Christ

  1084. and his

  1085. victory

  1086. over

  1087. all

  1088. things

  1089. what is

  1090. to mark

  1091. the

  1092. church

  1093. is

  1094. to be

  1095. people

  1096. that are

  1097. marked

  1098. by

  1099. God's

  1100. merciful

  1101. hand

  1102. extending

  1103. to

  1104. them

  1105. not a

  1106. group

  1107. of

  1108. people

  1109. that are

  1110. cleaned

  1111. up

  1112. ready

  1113. to

  1114. go

  1115. sinless

  1116. but

  1117. people

  1118. recognizing

  1119. their

  1120. sin

  1121. recognizing

  1122. that in

  1123. a sense

  1124. we're all

  1125. betrayers

  1126. we're all

  1127. enemies

  1128. of God

  1129. and that

  1130. he has

  1131. made a

  1132. way for

  1133. us to

  1134. become

  1135. friends

  1136. we

  1137. are a

  1138. church

  1139. that

  1140. recognizes

  1141. that

  1142. above

  1143. all of

  1144. us

  1145. is a

  1146. lord

  1147. that has

  1148. conquered

  1149. evil

  1150. and sin

  1151. and death

  1152. which means

  1153. no foe

  1154. that we

  1155. could face

  1156. can ever

  1157. overtake

  1158. our king

  1159. and although

  1160. our bodies

  1161. may

  1162. break down

  1163. and they

  1164. will

  1165. and our

  1166. hearts may

  1167. ache because

  1168. life is very

  1169. difficult

  1170. and often

  1171. tragic

  1172. and difficulties

  1173. come

  1174. we can

  1175. know that

  1176. because Christ's

  1177. victory is

  1178. over all

  1179. of our

  1180. foes for

  1181. all of

  1182. eternity

  1183. that we

  1184. can rest

  1185. secure

  1186. that our

  1187. souls can

  1188. rest secure

  1189. in him

  1190. that's the

  1191. good news of

  1192. the gospel of

  1193. Christ and

  1194. that is

  1195. something that

  1196. we can

  1197. achieve

  1198. with

  1199. self

  1200. justification

  1201. by pushing

  1202. away

  1203. the mercy

  1204. and love

  1205. extended to

  1206. us by

  1207. Christ Jesus

  1208. and trying

  1209. to figure

  1210. out life

  1211. ourselves

  1212. and clean

  1213. up our

  1214. own lives

  1215. we

  1216. don't

  1217. enjoy that

  1218. same sort

  1219. of eternal

  1220. victory

  1221. so the good

  1222. news of the

  1223. gospel of

  1224. Christ is

  1225. to mark

  1226. his church

  1227. and the

  1228. gospel was

  1229. to form a

  1230. new and

  1231. more expansive

  1232. community of

  1233. friends

  1234. it seems

  1235. kind of a

  1236. quaint thing

  1237. to say

  1238. but not

  1239. if you

  1240. were an

  1241. enemy of

  1242. the king

  1243. it's not a

  1244. quaint thing

  1245. to say

  1246. that

  1247. that I

  1248. used to

  1249. be an

  1250. enemy

  1251. destined

  1252. for death

  1253. and the

  1254. gallows

  1255. and the

  1256. king himself

  1257. saved me

  1258. and now

  1259. I'm his

  1260. friend

  1261. there's

  1262. nothing

  1263. quaint

  1264. in that

  1265. that's

  1266. what Christ

  1267. Jesus

  1268. does

  1269. he

  1270. offers

  1271. to us

  1272. what

  1273. we are

  1274. so desperate

  1275. for

  1276. and he

  1277. calls us

  1278. to bear

  1279. witness

  1280. to that

  1281. truth

  1282. to other

  1283. people

  1284. so that

  1285. unlike

  1286. Judas

  1287. who is

  1288. a guide

  1289. to those

  1290. who are

  1291. trying to

  1292. kill

  1293. Jesus

  1294. we are

  1295. a guide

  1296. for those

  1297. that need

  1298. Christ

  1299. we don't

  1300. bring the

  1301. enemies to

  1302. kill our

  1303. king

  1304. we bring

  1305. our enemies

  1306. to our

  1307. king

  1308. so he

  1309. can make

  1310. them

  1311. his

  1312. friends

  1313. that's

  1314. what it

  1315. means to

  1316. bear

  1317. witness

  1318. to the

  1319. gospel

  1320. so what

  1321. it means

  1322. to take

  1323. on the

  1324. very

  1325. ministry

  1326. of Christ

  1327. himself

  1328. to be a

  1329. guide to

  1330. the blind

  1331. leading enemies

  1332. of Christ

  1333. to him

  1334. like I said

  1335. so that he

  1336. can make

  1337. them friends

  1338. this is what

  1339. marks Peter

  1340. as a friend

  1341. even though he

  1342. was a betrayer

  1343. this is what

  1344. is offered to

  1345. us today

  1346. if you

  1347. have enjoyed

  1348. friendship with

  1349. Christ but

  1350. have fallen

  1351. away or

  1352. your heart

  1353. has grown

  1354. cold or

  1355. you feel

  1356. maybe at

  1357. best estranged

  1358. but if

  1359. you're real

  1360. like an

  1361. enemy this

  1362. is the

  1363. time to

  1364. come to

  1365. him and

  1366. like Peter

  1367. cry out

  1368. to mercy

  1369. cry out

  1370. for mercy

  1371. to God

  1372. himself

  1373. through

  1374. Christ

  1375. friends

  1376. guilt can

  1377. be a

  1378. wonderful

  1379. thing

  1380. if it's

  1381. conviction

  1382. and if it

  1383. leads us

  1384. to Christ

  1385. guilt is a

  1386. terrible thing

  1387. if it

  1388. does not

  1389. lead us

  1390. to Christ

  1391. and it

  1392. just is

  1393. weight

  1394. upon our

  1395. backs

  1396. and our

  1397. weight

  1398. and weight

  1399. upon our

  1400. backs

  1401. some more

  1402. and some

  1403. more

  1404. until our

  1405. backs

  1406. break

  1407. we've

  1408. looked at

  1409. Peter

  1410. sorry

  1411. we've

  1412. looked at

  1413. Judas

  1414. the betrayer

  1415. we've

  1416. looked at

  1417. Peter

  1418. the friend

  1419. and now

  1420. we'll look

  1421. at Christ

  1422. the heart

  1423. knower

  1424. look with

  1425. me

  1426. verses

  1427. 24

  1428. to 26

  1429. and they

  1430. prayed

  1431. that is

  1432. the 11

  1433. they prayed

  1434. and said

  1435. you Lord

  1436. who know

  1437. the hearts

  1438. of all

  1439. show

  1440. which one

  1441. of these

  1442. two

  1443. you have

  1444. chosen

  1445. to take

  1446. the place

  1447. in this

  1448. ministry

  1449. and apostleship

  1450. from which

  1451. Judas

  1452. turned aside

  1453. to go

  1454. to his

  1455. own

  1456. place

  1457. and they

  1458. cast

  1459. lots

  1460. for them

  1461. and the

  1462. lot

  1463. fell

  1464. on

  1465. Matthias

  1466. and he

  1467. was

  1468. numbered

  1469. with the

  1470. 11

  1471. apostles

  1472. although

  1473. the portion

  1474. this portion

  1475. of scripture

  1476. is clearly

  1477. about

  1478. excuse me

  1479. the choosing

  1480. of Judas's

  1481. replacement

  1482. it helps us

  1483. to understand

  1484. the scripture

  1485. helps us

  1486. understand

  1487. that Christ

  1488. knows

  1489. the hearts

  1490. of all

  1491. in fact

  1492. in the original

  1493. language

  1494. this should

  1495. read something

  1496. like

  1497. you Lord

  1498. are the

  1499. heart

  1500. knower

  1501. or the

  1502. knower

  1503. of all

  1504. hearts

  1505. this is

  1506. like the

  1507. title

  1508. of

  1509. Christ

  1510. he's

  1511. the

  1512. heart

  1513. knower

  1514. who

  1515. knows

  1516. the

  1517. heart

  1518. of

  1519. men

  1520. and

  1521. women

  1522. except

  1523. themselves

  1524. and I

  1525. would put

  1526. forward

  1527. to you

  1528. maybe

  1529. you don't

  1530. even know

  1531. your own

  1532. heart

  1533. super well

  1534. I

  1535. certainly

  1536. don't

  1537. Christ

  1538. the heart

  1539. knower

  1540. and it

  1541. speaks of

  1542. his

  1543. providence

  1544. and lordship

  1545. over all

  1546. things

  1547. so that

  1548. he knows

  1549. our hearts

  1550. even when

  1551. we do

  1552. not

  1553. so we

  1554. live in

  1555. a post

  1556. modern

  1557. world

  1558. or a

  1559. late

  1560. modern

  1561. world

  1562. however

  1563. you want

  1564. to

  1565. sum

  1566. it

  1567. up

  1568. and the

  1569. ethos

  1570. really is

  1571. moral

  1572. relativism

  1573. that

  1574. that has

  1575. the catch

  1576. phrase

  1577. or the

  1578. motto

  1579. follow

  1580. your

  1581. heart

  1582. but

  1583. really

  1584. what

  1585. it's

  1586. really

  1587. saying

  1588. is

  1589. follow

  1590. your

  1591. desires

  1592. whatever

  1593. is

  1594. the

  1595. thing

  1596. that

  1597. you're

  1598. feeling

  1599. today

  1600. follow

  1601. it

  1602. and

  1603. that

  1604. can

  1605. get

  1606. us

  1607. into

  1608. all

  1609. sorts

  1610. of

  1611. hurt

  1612. but

  1613. who

  1614. can

  1615. really

  1616. know

  1617. our

  1618. hearts

  1619. let alone

  1620. enough

  1621. to follow

  1622. them

  1623. we are

  1624. complex

  1625. and

  1626. confused

  1627. people

  1628. we take

  1629. in a

  1630. great deal

  1631. of

  1632. information

  1633. every

  1634. single

  1635. day

  1636. that

  1637. influences

  1638. us

  1639. for

  1640. good

  1641. or

  1642. ill

  1643. we

  1644. want

  1645. to

  1646. and

  1647. it's

  1648. very

  1649. confusing

  1650. for

  1651. us

  1652. we

  1653. want

  1654. on

  1655. one

  1656. hand

  1657. to

  1658. to

  1659. have

  1660. things

  1661. that

  1662. we

  1663. don't

  1664. have

  1665. and

  1666. yet

  1667. we

  1668. grow

  1669. weary

  1670. of the

  1671. things

  1672. that

  1673. we

  1674. wanted

  1675. just

  1676. yesterday

  1677. for

  1678. things

  1679. that

  1680. we

  1681. might

  1682. never

  1683. get

  1684. tomorrow

  1685. we

  1686. struggle

  1687. with

  1688. contentment

  1689. and

  1690. direction

  1691. and

  1692. satisfaction

  1693. and

  1694. purpose

  1695. we

  1696. want

  1697. autonomy

  1698. and yet

  1699. we

  1700. lament

  1701. loneliness

  1702. we

  1703. want

  1704. an

  1705. interconnected

  1706. community

  1707. that

  1708. is

  1709. lifelong

  1710. and yet

  1711. desire

  1712. fierce

  1713. independence

  1714. friends

  1715. our

  1716. hearts

  1717. can be

  1718. a very

  1719. confusing

  1720. place

  1721. and it

  1722. is hubris

  1723. therefore

  1724. to think

  1725. we can

  1726. navigate

  1727. this

  1728. life

  1729. and find

  1730. eternal

  1731. meeting

  1732. and

  1733. transcendent

  1734. joy

  1735. by our

  1736. own

  1737. strength

  1738. by our

  1739. own

  1740. will

  1741. by following

  1742. our

  1743. own

  1744. heart

  1745. title

  1746. of

  1747. Christ

  1748. again

  1749. Christ

  1750. the

  1751. heart

  1752. knower

  1753. he

  1754. knows

  1755. your

  1756. heart

  1757. he

  1758. knows

  1759. the

  1760. things

  1761. that

  1762. you

  1763. truly

  1764. desire

  1765. and

  1766. he

  1767. knows

  1768. the

  1769. confusion

  1770. that

  1771. you

  1772. struggle

  1773. with

  1774. and

  1775. the

  1776. complexities

  1777. and

  1778. the

  1779. contradictions

  1780. and

  1781. the

  1782. beauty

  1783. also

  1784. in your

  1785. own

  1786. heart

  1787. that

  1788. you

  1789. struggle

  1790. to

  1791. express

  1792. I

  1793. mean

  1794. he

  1795. knows

  1796. us

  1797. all

  1798. he

  1799. knows

  1800. every

  1801. last

  1802. bit

  1803. of

  1804. you

  1805. so

  1806. friends

  1807. run

  1808. to the

  1809. heart

  1810. knower

  1811. run

  1812. to

  1813. Christ

  1814. and

  1815. trust

  1816. yourself

  1817. to

  1818. him

  1819. give

  1820. him

  1821. the

  1822. worries

  1823. and

  1824. confusions

  1825. and

  1826. trust

  1827. that

  1828. all

  1829. of

  1830. it

  1831. so

  1832. that

  1833. he

  1834. can

  1835. truly

  1836. begin

  1837. this

  1838. work

  1839. in

  1840. your

  1841. heart

  1842. and

  1843. you

  1844. can

  1845. enjoy

  1846. his

  1847. salvation

  1848. which

  1849. is

  1850. himself

  1851. and

  1852. this

  1853. is

  1854. what

  1855. it

  1856. means

  1857. to

  1858. become

  1859. his

  1860. friend

  1861. Judas

  1862. in

  1863. many

  1864. ways

  1865. is

  1866. unlike

  1867. us

  1868. but

  1869. in

  1870. many

  1871. ways

  1872. he

  1873. is

  1874. like

  1875. us

  1876. we

  1877. are

  1878. like

  1879. him

  1880. same

  1881. with

  1882. Peter

  1883. we

  1884. were

  1885. enemies

  1886. of

  1887. God

  1888. first

  1889. or

  1890. Colossians

  1891. chapter

  1892. one

  1893. speaks

  1894. of

  1895. this

  1896. while

  1897. we

  1898. were

  1899. still

  1900. enemies

  1901. of

  1902. God

  1903. what

  1904. did

  1905. Christ

  1906. do

  1907. he

  1908. died

  1909. for

  1910. us

  1911. we

  1912. are

  1913. all

  1914. enemies

  1915. of

  1916. God

  1917. let

  1918. us

  1919. not

  1920. persist

  1921. with

  1922. that

  1923. let

  1924. us

  1925. in

  1926. fact

  1927. come

  1928. to

  1929. Christ

  1930. as

  1931. his

  1932. friends

  1933. bending

  1934. our

  1935. knee

  1936. to

  1937. his

  1938. lordship

  1939. and

  1940. seeking

  1941. not

  1942. your

  1943. own

  1944. justification

  1945. your

  1946. own

  1947. salvation

  1948. your

  1949. own

  1950. satisfaction

  1951. but

  1952. instead

  1953. look to

  1954. him

  1955. and

  1956. trust

  1957. in

  1958. his

  1959. eternal

  1960. goodness

  1961. let's

  1962. pray

  1963. father

  1964. father

  1965. father

  1966. we

  1967. if we

  1968. are

  1969. open

  1970. and

  1971. honest

  1972. with

  1973. ourselves

  1974. our

  1975. hearts

  1976. are

  1977. incapable

  1978. of

  1979. being

  1980. constantly

  1981. good

  1982. yes

  1983. by

  1984. your

  1985. grace

  1986. common

  1987. grace

  1988. we

  1989. can

  1990. do

  1991. very

  1992. good

  1993. things

  1994. and

  1995. many

  1996. people

  1997. who

  1998. are

  1999. not

  2000. Christians

  2001. can

  2002. do

  2003. many

  2004. good

  2005. things

  2006. but

  2007. we

  2008. cannot

  2009. reconcile

  2010. ourselves

  2011. to

  2012. you

  2013. we

  2014. cannot

  2015. expunge

  2016. the

  2017. sin

  2018. from

  2019. our

  2020. very

  2021. being

  2022. that

  2023. only

  2024. you

  2025. can

  2026. do

  2027. so

  2028. lord

  2029. we

  2030. come

  2031. to

  2032. you

  2033. as

  2034. your

  2035. friends

  2036. as

  2037. former

  2038. enemies

  2039. and

  2040. some

  2041. people

  2042. may

  2043. be

  2044. enemies

  2045. that

  2046. are

  2047. soon

  2048. to

  2049. be

  2050. friends

  2051. but

  2052. lord

  2053. we

  2054. come

  2055. to

  2056. you

  2057. and

  2058. we

  2059. ask

  2060. that

  2061. by

  2062. your

  2063. spirit

  2064. you

  2065. will

  2066. humble

  2067. us

  2068. and

  2069. that

  2070. you

  2071. would

  2072. sharpen

  2073. us

  2074. and

  2075. make

  2076. us

  2077. a

  2078. community

  2079. of

  2080. friends

  2081. a

  2082. community

  2083. that

  2084. is

  2085. marked

  2086. by

  2087. friendship

  2088. with

  2089. you

  2090. a

  2091. community

  2092. that

  2093. really

  2094. is

  2095. honest

  2096. with

  2097. our

  2098. brokenness

  2099. true

  2100. about

  2101. our

  2102. brokenness

  2103. and

  2104. that

  2105. throws

  2106. ourselves

  2107. at

  2108. your

  2109. mercy

  2110. lord

  2111. would

  2112. you

  2113. have

  2114. mercy

  2115. upon

  2116. us

  2117. we

  2118. thank

  2119. you

  2120. for

  2121. all

  2122. that

  2123. you

  2124. have

  2125. done

  2126. on

  2127. the

  2128. cross

  2129. we

  2130. pray

  2131. this

  2132. in

  2133. Christ's

  2134. name

  2135. Amen
