  1. Human societies have never been a monolith in terms of ideas and religion.

  2. There have always been multiple and often conflicting belief systems

  3. that have been tolerated so long as they are subservient to the prevailing religion or philosophy.

  4. So, example, in ancient Rome, there were many different religions,

  5. but there was only one state religion that was connected to the gods and the cult of Caesar.

  6. But the other religions, the other ones that were on the periphery,

  7. were tolerated unless they messed with the temple economy or with peace or the sacredness of Caesar.

  8. In many Muslim countries today and throughout history,

  9. there have been Christians and Jews that have been tolerated so long as they pay a tax

  10. and ensure that their churches or synagogues or places of worship are not higher than the local mosques,

  11. and especially if proselytizing doesn't happen, evangelizing doesn't happen.

  12. And here in the post-Christian West, we seem to tolerate all religions only if they are kept private.

  13. They remain in a closeted state not to infringe upon our individualism and expressive personhood.

  14. Or, to put it another way, as long as your religion doesn't interfere with me living my truth.

  15. So the idea of living one's truth, by and large, has been seen as a positive idea in our day.

  16. Folks who may have been excluded or marginalized or don't find themselves fitting

  17. can find, in a sense, meaning and belonging that would be elusive otherwise.

  18. But the problem with living your truth, as it often is expressed,

  19. causes people to ignore the truth.

  20. Truth becomes relativized.

  21. This moral compromise due to moral relativism seeps in and allows this permissibility of all things

  22. as long as it allows me to reach my goal.

  23. As long as I have happiness or perceived happiness

  24. or people look at me as a happy or fulfilled person.

  25. In many ways, this is the folk religion of our day.

  26. And the reason why all religions are tolerated as long as they don't infringe upon me living my truth

  27. is because living my truth is, in fact, our state religion.

  28. Peter and John will be arrested.

  29. If you remember last week,

  30. this man, he was a lame beggar from birth.

  31. Acts chapter 3, he was at the beautiful gate begging for money.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  32. And Peter and John walk by him.

  33. He's looking for coins.

  34. Peter and John get his gaze, look at him,

  35. and command him in the name of Jesus to rise up and walk.

  36. And he certainly does.

  37. Peter takes the opportunity to proclaim that it wasn't by his hand,

  38. but Christ who healed the man.

  39. In fact, Jesus, whom you crucified, he says to the people,

  40. in ignorance along with your leaders,

  41. he bids you to repent.

  42. And by the way, if you repent and turn to him,

  43. your sins will be blotted out.

  44. You will have times of refreshing, it says,

  45. and then there will be a promise of the return of Christ to right all wrongs.

  46. This is what we learned about last week in Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  47. Well, Acts chapter 4 begins with them being arrested for this very act.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  48. They will be interrogated.

  49. And yet in this interrogation,

  50. they will be bold as well as they proclaim

  51. that there is no other name by which salvation can come apart from Christ.

  52. But they're not arrested by just any old group.

  53. It is by the Sanhedrin,

  54. the religious and civic leaders of their time.

  55. In fact, it's going to be by the hand of the very people

  56. that arrested and sought the crucifixion of Christ.

  57. Peter's sermon that he will preach to these people

  58. will obliterate the idea of living your truth.

  59. Something that was incredibly provocative in his day,

  60. but it also is incredibly provocative in our day as well.

  61. But Peter doesn't simply tear down something

  62. without offering a better option,

  63. because he certainly does that.

  64. In fact, he will proclaim the gospel of Christ

  65. to the Sanhedrin,

  66. and they will be left with a decision to make.

  67. What Peter will do is he will proclaim the truth,

  68. not a truth.

  69. If Peter is correct,

  70. then moral relativism is completely wrong.

  71. And if Peter is correct,

  72. then other religious traditions

  73. that do not confess Christ as Savior and Lord are wrong.

  74. And if Peter is correct,

  75. then the ethos that informs much of our political

  76. and cultural leaders in this post-Christian Canada,

  77. they're wrong.

  78. Not just wrong in the here and now,

  79. but eternally wrong.

  80. So this is a hot take.

  81. This is a hot take.

  82. But the scriptures tell us that it is true,

  83. and that it is good news for us today.

  84. So our commitment to the scriptures

  85. is to always walk towards the difficult passages,

  86. the uncomfortable passages.

  87. And this morning,

  88. we'll break our text into three sections,

  89. asking the question,

  90. how does the gospel of Christ

  91. free us from living our truth?

  92. So before we jump into it,

  93. let me pray and ask the Lord's blessing.

  94. Lord, we come to your word this morning,

  95. and we ask that you help us to come to it humbly.

  96. Lord, that we would be curious people,

  97. the curiosity that leads to truth.

  98. And by your Holy Spirit,

  99. that you would open our eyes if they need opening.

  100. Lord, help us to receive

  101. if we are struggling to receive.

  102. We pray this in Christ's name.

  103. Amen.

  104. So I alluded to the arrest.

  105. Let's read it.

  106. Acts chapter 4, verses 1 to 6.

    Acts 4:1–6

  107. And as they were speaking to the people,

  108. that is the apostles, Peter and John,

  109. the priests and the captain of the temple

  110. and the Sadducees came upon them,

  111. greatly annoyed

  112. because they were teaching the people

  113. and proclaiming in Jesus

  114. the resurrection from the dead.

  115. If you remember,

  116. the Sadducees were this Jewish sect

  117. that did not believe in the resurrection at all.

  118. They had their power base in the temple.

  119. They were a very powerful group.

  120. In addition to the Sadducees,

  121. there were priests as well and scribes,

  122. people that would comprise this Sanhedrin,

  123. this ruling body.

  124. Let's continue reading.

  125. Verse 3.

  126. And they arrested them

  127. and put them in custody until the next day,

  128. for it was already evening.

  129. But many of those who had heard the word believed

  130. and the number of the men came to about 5,000.

  131. So 3,000 from the Pentecost sermon.

  132. Not sure how much time has elapsed

  133. between then and Acts chapter 3,

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  134. but another 2,000.

  135. It says men.

  136. Presumably there were more.

  137. But here Luke tells us

  138. that 5,000 people have come to faith,

  139. if not more,

  140. since the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost.

  141. Verse 5 and 6.

  142. On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes

  143. gathered together in Jerusalem

  144. with Annas, the high priest,

  145. and Caiaphas, that's his son-in-law,

  146. and John and Alexander,

  147. and all who were of the high priestly family.

  148. The religious and civic leaders and authorities,

  149. they have heard this proclamation of Christ

  150. rising from the grave,

  151. and they are greatly annoyed.

  152. They're greatly annoyed

  153. because they are people that are in power

  154. and this message threatens that.

  155. So we'll pick up in verse 7

  156. and we'll look first at our first point.

  157. I didn't tell you guys my points.

  158. That's a bit of a faux pas.

  159. So we'll look at the first point

  160. and the first point is the good news

  161. of the name of Christ.

  162. So we'll look at verse 7 to 12.

  163. We'll start in verse 7 here.

  164. And when they had set them,

  165. that is Peter and John,

  166. in their midst,

  167. they inquired,

  168. by what power or by what name

  169. did you do this?

  170. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,

  171. said to them,

  172. rulers of the people and elders,

  173. if we are being examined today

  174. concerning a good deed done to a crippled man,

  175. by what means this man has been healed,

  176. let it be known to all of you

  177. and to all the people of Israel

  178. that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

  179. whom you crucified,

  180. whom God raised from the dead,

  181. by him this man is standing before you well.

  182. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you,

  183. the builders,

  184. which has become the cornerstone.

  185. Much like in Mark chapter 2,

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  186. if you remember the story of the paralytic

  187. who was lowered through the roof,

  188. who was healed by Jesus,

  189. much like the paralytic

  190. who was healed in a way

  191. to proclaim the divinity of Jesus,

  192. so too the healing of the lame beggar

  193. in Acts 3 testifies to Jesus' power

  194. and authority over all things

  195. as the conqueror of death

  196. and the redeemer of mankind.

  197. I mean, wonderful that the man got healed.

  198. We find out at the end of this section,

  199. in verse 22,

  200. it was 40 years,

  201. good for that guy.

  202. I'm not downplaying it.

  203. But it was used, in a sense,

  204. to proclaim that this Christ,

  205. this Jesus,

  206. has risen from the grave

  207. and all authority is his.

  208. So, in a sense,

  209. the crippled man

  210. is not a prop, so to speak,

  211. but a means by which

  212. Christ's power and authority

  213. is testified.

  214. In fact, Peter says that

  215. Jesus is the chief cornerstone,

  216. the very foundation

  217. upon which all of salvation rests.

  218. Christ is the only one

  219. who could win salvation,

  220. for he alone

  221. could both atone for the sins

  222. of the world

  223. and offer new life.

  224. He is fully man and fully God,

  225. and in the incarnation,

  226. he bridges the gap

  227. between sinful humanity

  228. and the perfect,

  229. all-powerful God.

  230. This is what Jesus does.

  231. Verse 12 hammers this home

  232. all the more.

  233. This is what it says,

  234. and there is salvation

  235. in no one else,

  236. for there is no other name

  237. under heaven

  238. given among men

  239. by which we must be saved.

  240. There's no other name.

  241. That's what they say.

  242. No other system of belief,

  243. no amount of financial

  244. or career success,

  245. no amount of charitable giving,

  246. no amount of good,

  247. important self-help,

  248. no other vision of utopia,

  249. no other religion,

  250. no other truth,

  251. no other Savior,

  252. nothing under the sun

  253. apart from Christ

  254. can win us salvation.

  255. That's what Peter is saying.

  256. Very provocative thing to say.

  257. He's saying to the Sanhedrin,

  258. all of the hard work,

  259. in a sense,

  260. that you have done

  261. to secure your family

  262. as a high priestly family

  263. in the temple,

  264. all of the hard work

  265. you've done

  266. to consolidate your power,

  267. to know the Scriptures

  268. inside and out,

  269. to devote your life to it,

  270. it's not going to save you.

  271. Only the name of Christ

  272. can bring salvation.

  273. This is an uncomfortable truth

  274. for a city like ours,

  275. is it not?

  276. Ours is a city

  277. made up of multiple religions,

  278. multiple spiritualities,

  279. multiple belief systems.

  280. So to say that it is only

  281. Jesus' name and no other,

  282. I mean,

  283. that's a very uncomfortable

  284. thing to say.

  285. I maybe caution you

  286. from going around

  287. and just blurting it out

  288. everywhere,

  289. tact is an important aspect

  290. of being a respectable

  291. human being,

  292. but nevertheless,

  293. there is only one name

  294. that brings salvation.

  295. So to say that,

  296. in a sense,

  297. it's only Jesus' name

  298. is to claim that

  299. everything else

  300. that claims salvation

  301. or some kind of salvific

  302. end or some kind of utopia

  303. like heaven

  304. is false.

  305. but as uncomfortable

  306. as this is,

  307. it's still very good news.

  308. How?

  309. To say that there is no hope

  310. of salvation

  311. apart from Christ

  312. is to recognize

  313. that although humanity

  314. is capable of great things,

  315. it's this doctrine

  316. of common grace,

  317. it's very important.

  318. Humanity's capable

  319. of many great things.

  320. The one thing

  321. that we are incapable of

  322. is solving the problem

  323. of evil,

  324. the prevalence

  325. of disease and death

  326. and the problem

  327. of sin and shame.

  328. We are incapable

  329. of solving this problem.

  330. We put balm on it.

  331. We deal with the symptoms

  332. and that's not a bad thing

  333. necessarily,

  334. but we can't deal

  335. with the root issue.

  336. We just can't get clear

  337. of these things

  338. no matter how hard we try,

  339. no matter how ingenious

  340. our innovations are,

  341. we can't conquer

  342. the unconquerable.

  343. The idea isn't unique

  344. to Christianity.

  345. Other faiths

  346. can recognize this,

  347. that there's a big problem

  348. in a sense.

  349. Maybe they think

  350. that they see it

  351. as a glaring issue.

  352. There's some similarities.

  353. However,

  354. only Christianity

  355. contends that

  356. the solution

  357. for this

  358. unconquerable issue

  359. does not reside in us,

  360. in our willpower,

  361. our strength,

  362. our ability

  363. to pull up our bootstraps,

  364. to manifest it

  365. if we speak it

  366. into the universe.

  367. We cannot do it

  368. and only Christianity

  369. contends

  370. that salvation

  371. must be

  372. from Christ alone.

  373. And this salvation

  374. in a sense

  375. is this marriage

  376. between justice

  377. and mercy.

  378. It's an expression

  379. of God's divine love

  380. and only something

  381. that God himself

  382. can do

  383. so that God,

  384. the Son of God,

  385. he unites himself

  386. to mankind

  387. in the person of Jesus,

  388. fully man

  389. and fully God

  390. so that in Christ

  391. all the justice

  392. is poured out

  393. on mankind

  394. as our representative,

  395. fully man.

  396. And all of the mercy

  397. that ought to be

  398. extended

  399. in a sense

  400. to us

  401. is given.

  402. That we get

  403. the place of Christ

  404. even though

  405. we don't deserve it.

  406. Friends,

  407. this is called

  408. the doctrine of grace.

  409. This is what

  410. Peter is referring to

  411. when he calls Christ

  412. the chief cornerstone.

  413. And he's the chief

  414. cornerstone

  415. because he can withstand

  416. the weight

  417. of our sin

  418. and our fear

  419. and our self-righteousness

  420. and the pride

  421. that bubbles up

  422. inside of us

  423. every single day.

  424. Imagine a home

  425. whose foundation

  426. is made

  427. of reinforced concrete

  428. with rebar,

  429. the best materials,

  430. for that foundation.

  431. It's built strong

  432. and to last.

  433. In many ways

  434. this building

  435. is a testament

  436. to a good foundation.

  437. It has lasted.

  438. The capstone

  439. says 1888.

  440. It's capable

  441. of withstanding

  442. many tons

  443. of material,

  444. many years

  445. of wear.

  446. And consider

  447. a foundation

  448. that's built of

  449. and I'm trying

  450. to think of something

  451. that is brittle,

  452. like the most brittle.

  453. Imagine a foundation

  454. that is made

  455. of dried

  456. angel hair pasta.

  457. Is there something

  458. more brittle?

  459. One brick,

  460. the thing,

  461. crack,

  462. crack,

  463. crack,

  464. crack,

  465. crack,

  466. it's done,

  467. it's gone.

  468. Our best efforts,

  469. our best attempts

  470. at perfect religion

  471. and modern visions

  472. of utopia

  473. brought about

  474. by our own hand

  475. are as capable

  476. of extending

  477. eternal salvation

  478. to us

  479. as the angel hair

  480. foundation

  481. is capable

  482. of supporting

  483. brick and mortar.

  484. Christ and Christ

  485. alone is the

  486. cornerstone.

  487. He is the foundation.

  488. He is the only one

  489. that can withstand

  490. life.

  491. He is the only one

  492. who can extend

  493. salvation.

  494. This is what Peter

  495. is sharing

  496. with the religious

  497. establishment.

  498. The very ones

  499. who control

  500. religious life

  501. in Jerusalem

  502. and all of Israel.

  503. Peter isn't just

  504. exposing them

  505. in a sense

  506. to how

  507. misguided

  508. they are.

  509. He's not just

  510. tearing down

  511. their worldview

  512. but he is inviting

  513. them into the truth

  514. to trust in Christ,

  515. the hope of Israel,

  516. the prophesied Messiah

  517. that they would have

  518. heard about

  519. and read about

  520. and in a sense

  521. devoted their life

  522. to seeing.

  523. And if you remember

  524. in Acts chapter 3

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  525. Peter,

  526. speaking to

  527. the crowd,

  528. said that

  529. the crowd

  530. crucified

  531. Jesus

  532. and their leaders

  533. but it was done

  534. in ignorance.

  535. That's what he says.

  536. I believe it's

  537. verse 16

  538. of Acts chapter 3.

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  539. It was done

  540. in ignorance.

  541. Well now

  542. they know

  543. and now

  544. they have proof

  545. in a sense

  546. because this man

  547. is standing right there.

  548. Who else

  549. can heal

  550. a man

  551. that everybody

  552. in the temple

  553. precinct

  554. would have known?

  555. 40 years crippled,

  556. how long

  557. he was begging,

  558. now he's standing

  559. there and he's

  560. strong.

  561. How can they

  562. deny it?

  563. And Peter and John

  564. are attributing it

  565. to Jesus

  566. because he rose

  567. from the dead

  568. because he's

  569. the creator

  570. of life

  571. because this man

  572. is also God

  573. and salvation

  574. has come.

  575. They're not

  576. ignorant anymore,

  577. are they?

  578. They're not

  579. ignorant anymore,

  580. are they?

  581. Verse 13 and 14

  582. says this,

  583. Now when they,

  584. that is,

  585. the members

  586. of the council

  587. or the Sanhedrin,

  588. Now when they

  589. saw the boldness

  590. of Peter and John

  591. and perceived

  592. that they were

  593. uneducated common men,

  594. they were astonished

  595. and they recognized

  596. that they had been

  597. with Jesus.

  598. But seeing the man

  599. who was healed

  600. standing beside them,

  601. they had nothing

  602. to say in opposition.

  603. What will they do?

  604. This brings us

  605. to the second point,

  606. the problem of pride.

  607. If the members

  608. of the Sanhedrin

  609. were to believe

  610. in Christ,

  611. it would undoubtedly

  612. mean a loss

  613. of their prestige.

  614. It would mean

  615. that they would

  616. have to admit

  617. that they were wrong

  618. in putting Christ

  619. to death

  620. because you don't

  621. crucify the Messiah.

  622. They would have

  623. to, in a sense,

  624. lose their standing

  625. in the community,

  626. their perks,

  627. their money,

  628. everything,

  629. in a sense,

  630. that they held

  631. dear,

  632. not to mention

  633. that their religious

  634. and civic duties

  635. would likely

  636. cease to be.

  637. It would cost them

  638. a lot.

  639. No more kickbacks,

  640. no more honor.

  641. Instead,

  642. they would have

  643. to follow the leadership

  644. of these uneducated

  645. commoners.

  646. Whether or not

  647. they could read,

  648. I mean,

  649. it's flip a coin,

  650. maybe,

  651. maybe not.

  652. Unlikely

  653. that these fishermen

  654. could read.

  655. They would likely

  656. have heard

  657. the Bible

  658. read,

  659. maybe they could.

  660. The text doesn't say it,

  661. it just says that

  662. they are uneducated

  663. commoners.

  664. But Jesus chose

  665. them,

  666. he saved them,

  667. he chose them,

  668. and he chose them

  669. also to lead

  670. his church.

  671. And in a sense,

  672. worse than all

  673. of the things

  674. that they would

  675. have to lose,

  676. they would have

  677. to follow

  678. those guys.

  679. These were the

  680. religious

  681. and civic elites,

  682. these were the

  683. educated folk,

  684. and they would

  685. have to follow

  686. fishermen from

  687. the Galilee.

  688. If you remember

  689. in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  690. they were made

  691. fun of because

  692. they were Galileans,

  693. they're low status,

  694. and yet these

  695. are the people

  696. that we would

  697. have to follow,

  698. let alone

  699. follow Christ

  700. who we had

  701. crucified.

  702. So what

  703. did they do?

  704. Let's look at

  705. verse 15 to 18.

  706. But when they

  707. had commanded

  708. them to leave

  709. the council,

  710. they conferred

  711. with one another,

  712. saying,

  713. What shall we

  714. do with these

  715. men?

  716. For that a

  717. notable sign

  718. has been

  719. performed through

  720. them is evident

  721. to all the

  722. inhabitants of

  723. Jerusalem,

  724. and we cannot

  725. deny it.

  726. But in order

  727. that it may

  728. spread no further

  729. among the

  730. people,

  731. let us warn

  732. them to speak

  733. no more to

  734. anyone in

  735. this name.

  736. So they called

  737. them and charged

  738. them not to

  739. speak or teach

  740. at all in the

  741. name of Jesus.

  742. this little bit

  743. from verse 15

  744. to 18,

  745. it helps us

  746. to understand

  747. a very important

  748. truth.

  749. Unbelief

  750. is not

  751. an issue

  752. merely

  753. of

  754. considering

  755. facts

  756. and then

  757. making

  758. decisions,

  759. weighing

  760. truth

  761. and lies

  762. or

  763. likelihoods

  764. or

  765. rationality.

  766. Unbelief

  767. isn't

  768. an issue

  769. of just

  770. confronting,

  771. in a sense,

  772. our

  773. presuppositions.

  774. But rather,

  775. unbelief

  776. is the

  777. decision

  778. to forsake

  779. Christ and

  780. hold fast

  781. to one's

  782. belief and

  783. way of life.

  784. The evidence

  785. is here.

  786. These are

  787. educated people.

  788. Maybe they

  789. would have

  790. known the

  791. scriptures

  792. that would

  793. have said,

  794. in a sense,

  795. when the

  796. Messiah would

  797. come,

  798. that the

  799. lame would

  800. walk.

  801. Or they

  802. would know

  803. that Jesus

  804. would open

  805. the eyes

  806. of the blind

  807. and remember

  808. the scriptures

  809. that prophesied

  810. the blind

  811. would see.

  812. Or they

  813. would have

  814. in their

  815. minds

  816. the four

  817. servant

  818. songs of

  819. Isaiah

  820. culminating

  821. in Isaiah

  822. 53,

  823. that it

  824. pleased God

  825. to pour

  826. out his

  827. wrath on

  828. his servant.

  829. They have

  830. the evidence

  831. and yet

  832. evidence is

  833. not enough.

  834. Evidence is

  835. important.

  836. It's very

  837. important.

  838. Many people

  839. have come to

  840. faith through

  841. excellent

  842. ministries of

  843. apologetics,

  844. looking at

  845. the legitimacy

  846. of the

  847. Bible and

  848. the facts

  849. on the

  850. ground of

  851. the eyewitnesses

  852. of the

  853. resurrection of

  854. the Christ.

  855. But facts

  856. clearly

  857. aren't

  858. enough.

  859. unbelief

  860. here

  861. is the

  862. decision to

  863. forsake

  864. Christ and

  865. hold fast

  866. to one's

  867. beliefs,

  868. one's

  869. worldview

  870. and way

  871. of life,

  872. to remain

  873. on, in

  874. a sense,

  875. the throne

  876. of our

  877. own little

  878. mini-kingdom,

  879. to not let

  880. Christ himself

  881. take his

  882. rightful spot.

  883. Unbelief is

  884. the result of

  885. pride and

  886. it's a

  887. dangerous,

  888. dangerous

  889. thing.

  890. If the

  891. Sanhedrin,

  892. like I

  893. mentioned,

  894. admitted that

  895. Jesus was

  896. truly the

  897. Messiah,

  898. they would

  899. admit,

  900. have to admit

  901. to take

  902. the blame

  903. and put

  904. Christ on

  905. the cross.

  906. But if

  907. they did

  908. that,

  909. they would

  910. have understood

  911. that this

  912. was God's

  913. plan all

  914. along and

  915. that forgiveness

  916. was offered to

  917. them if they

  918. would have only

  919. repented.

  920. But they

  921. would have had

  922. to eat crow.

  923. They would

  924. have had to

  925. take a humble

  926. position.

  927. They would

  928. lose the

  929. things that

  930. they held

  931. on to.

  932. You see,

  933. unbelief is

  934. a result of

  935. pride,

  936. primarily.

  937. They do

  938. not understand

  939. the grandeur

  940. and the

  941. great benefit

  942. of God

  943. and especially

  944. not in

  945. Jesus Christ

  946. for all

  947. they see

  948. is loss.

  949. It's loss.

  950. It costs

  951. too much.

  952. I will

  953. not,

  954. it might

  955. even sound

  956. good,

  957. but I'm

  958. not going

  959. to go

  960. for it

  961. because I'm

  962. going to

  963. lose too

  964. much.

  965. I'm

  966. going to

  967. have to

  968. confess

  969. too much.

  970. Do we

  971. not struggle

  972. with this

  973. kind of

  974. unbelief?

  975. Do we

  976. not,

  977. as Christians,

  978. in a sense,

  979. want to

  980. submit our

  981. lives to

  982. Christ and

  983. to follow

  984. him,

  985. but there's

  986. a pride

  987. that wells

  988. up in

  989. us that

  990. says,

  991. surely he's

  992. not good

  993. enough.

  994. Whatever I

  995. will lose,

  996. he will not

  997. give me

  998. more.

  999. He will not

  1000. fulfill me in

  1001. the ways that I

  1002. need to be

  1003. fulfilled.

  1004. If I confess

  1005. my sins,

  1006. I will be

  1007. exposed as a

  1008. sinner.

  1009. Friends,

  1010. this is my

  1011. heart.

  1012. This is what's

  1013. going on inside

  1014. of your

  1015. pastor.

  1016. I'm sure it's

  1017. going on inside

  1018. of you.

  1019. There's a

  1020. pride that is

  1021. inherent in

  1022. humanity.

  1023. We struggle

  1024. with unbelief.

  1025. It's because

  1026. of pride.

  1027. We may think

  1028. Jesus is a

  1029. great leader

  1030. and a moral

  1031. authority,

  1032. but if he

  1033. isn't the

  1034. Christ,

  1035. then he is

  1036. nothing and

  1037. has no claim

  1038. on our lives.

  1039. But if he

  1040. is,

  1041. friends,

  1042. he requires

  1043. everything.

  1044. That is hard.

  1045. And it

  1046. is a

  1047. hard thing,

  1048. especially if

  1049. we are

  1050. enjoying the

  1051. bliss and

  1052. benefit of

  1053. false saviors.

  1054. Not bad

  1055. things,

  1056. but things

  1057. that are

  1058. improperly

  1059. ordered in

  1060. our lives,

  1061. that take

  1062. precedent,

  1063. that take

  1064. priority over

  1065. Christ.

  1066. But these

  1067. things are

  1068. momentary and

  1069. fleeting,

  1070. and I'll

  1071. tell you,

  1072. according to

  1073. the scriptures,

  1074. and I'm

  1075. sure if we

  1076. had a time

  1077. of testimony,

  1078. people could

  1079. stand up and

  1080. share.

  1081. Whatever you

  1082. have lost for

  1083. Christ,

  1084. where you

  1085. say in

  1086. humility,

  1087. by God's

  1088. strength,

  1089. I'm giving

  1090. this to

  1091. you,

  1092. has he

  1093. not given

  1094. you abundantly

  1095. more than

  1096. whatever you

  1097. have lost?

  1098. And once

  1099. again,

  1100. friends,

  1101. it is hard,

  1102. we understand

  1103. this,

  1104. but I

  1105. want to

  1106. share with

  1107. you another

  1108. religious leader

  1109. who,

  1110. unlike the

  1111. Sanhedrin,

  1112. encountered

  1113. Christ and

  1114. laid his

  1115. life down

  1116. for his

  1117. Savior.

  1118. And this

  1119. is the

  1120. Apostle Paul

  1121. in Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  1122. chapter 3,

  1123. 4 to 11.

  1124. This is what

  1125. he says,

  1126. Though I

  1127. myself have

  1128. reason for

  1129. confidence in

  1130. the flesh,

  1131. if anyone

  1132. else thinks he

  1133. has reason for

  1134. confidence in

  1135. the flesh,

  1136. I have more.

  1137. Here's his

  1138. religious

  1139. credentials.

  1140. Circumcised on

  1141. the eighth day

  1142. of the people

  1143. of Israel,

  1144. the tribe of

  1145. Benjamin,

  1146. a Hebrew of

  1147. Hebrews,

  1148. as to the

  1149. law of

  1150. Pharisee,

  1151. as to

  1152. zeal,

  1153. a persecutor

  1154. of the

  1155. church,

  1156. as to

  1157. righteousness

  1158. under the

  1159. law,

  1160. blameless,

  1161. but whatever

  1162. gain I

  1163. had I

  1164. counted as

  1165. lost for

  1166. the sake

  1167. of Christ.

  1168. Verse 8,

  1169. Indeed I

  1170. count everything

  1171. as lost

  1172. because of

  1173. the surpassing

  1174. worth of

  1175. knowing Christ

  1176. Jesus my

  1177. Lord.

  1178. For his

  1179. sake I

  1180. have suffered

  1181. the loss

  1182. of all

  1183. things and

  1184. count them

  1185. as rubbish

  1186. in order

  1187. that I

  1188. may gain

  1189. Christ and

  1190. be found

  1191. in him.

  1192. not having

  1193. a righteousness

  1194. of my

  1195. own that

  1196. comes from

  1197. the law

  1198. but that

  1199. which comes

  1200. through faith

  1201. in Christ,

  1202. the righteous,

  1203. the righteousness

  1204. from God

  1205. that depends

  1206. on faith,

  1207. that I

  1208. may know

  1209. him and

  1210. the power

  1211. of his

  1212. resurrection

  1213. and may

  1214. share his

  1215. sufferings

  1216. becoming like

  1217. him in

  1218. his death,

  1219. that by any

  1220. means possible

  1221. I may attain

  1222. the resurrection

  1223. from the

  1224. dead.

  1225. Verse 8,

  1226. Indeed I

  1227. count everything

  1228. as lost

  1229. because of

  1230. the surpassing

  1231. worth of

  1232. knowing Christ

  1233. Jesus my

  1234. Lord.

  1235. Whatever you

  1236. lose,

  1237. you gain

  1238. in Christ

  1239. because you

  1240. are now

  1241. connected to

  1242. the very

  1243. one who

  1244. created

  1245. everything

  1246. and it

  1247. does not

  1248. have an

  1249. expiry date.

  1250. It doesn't

  1251. rust,

  1252. it doesn't

  1253. grow mold,

  1254. your relationship

  1255. with Christ

  1256. is eternal.

  1257. His grip

  1258. on you

  1259. is way

  1260. stronger than

  1261. your grip

  1262. on him

  1263. and he

  1264. will not

  1265. let you

  1266. go.

  1267. Pride

  1268. is a

  1269. killer

  1270. for it

  1271. ignores

  1272. the truth

  1273. but if

  1274. we receive

  1275. the message

  1276. with humility

  1277. ours is

  1278. the kingdom.

  1279. It really

  1280. truly is.

  1281. So how

  1282. then do

  1283. we overcome

  1284. our pride?

  1285. How does

  1286. Peter,

  1287. John,

  1288. and now

  1289. we see

  1290. the Apostle

  1291. Paul,

  1292. how do

  1293. they say

  1294. yes to

  1295. Christ

  1296. even though

  1297. it costs

  1298. them greatly

  1299. but the

  1300. members of

  1301. the Sanhedrin

  1302. they say

  1303. no at

  1304. their eternal

  1305. peril.

  1306. This is

  1307. the last

  1308. point.

  1309. This is

  1310. the spirit

  1311. of truth.

  1312. Look with

  1313. me.

  1314. At the

  1315. text once

  1316. more,

  1317. verse 18

  1318. and following.

  1319. So they

  1320. called them

  1321. and charged

  1322. them not

  1323. to speak

  1324. or teach

  1325. at all

  1326. in the

  1327. name of

  1328. Jesus.

  1329. But Peter

  1330. and John

  1331. answered them,

  1332. whether it

  1333. is right

  1334. in the sight

  1335. of God

  1336. to listen

  1337. to you

  1338. rather than

  1339. to God

  1340. you must

  1341. judge

  1342. for we

  1343. cannot

  1344. but speak

  1345. of what

  1346. we have

  1347. seen

  1348. and heard.

  1349. And when

  1350. they had

  1351. further

  1352. threatened

  1353. them

  1354. they let

  1355. them go

  1356. finding

  1357. no way

  1358. to punish

  1359. them

  1360. because of

  1361. the people

  1362. for all

  1363. were praising

  1364. God for

  1365. what had

  1366. happened.

  1367. Look at

  1368. that boldness.

  1369. You judge

  1370. whether it

  1371. is right

  1372. for us

  1373. to listen

  1374. to you

  1375. or God

  1376. Peter

  1377. says to

  1378. them.

  1379. That takes

  1380. some chutzpah

  1381. that takes

  1382. some real

  1383. boldness.

  1384. But we

  1385. must remember

  1386. this is the

  1387. same Peter

  1388. okay just

  1389. pause for a

  1390. second think

  1391. about this.

  1392. Peter and

  1393. John are

  1394. before the

  1395. entire

  1396. religious

  1397. establishment

  1398. and they

  1399. are saying

  1400. listen

  1401. if it's

  1402. between

  1403. you

  1404. or God

  1405. I'm

  1406. listening

  1407. to God.

  1408. This is

  1409. the same

  1410. Peter who

  1411. a few

  1412. weeks prior

  1413. couldn't

  1414. muster up

  1415. enough courage

  1416. to confront

  1417. and stand

  1418. for Christ

  1419. in the face

  1420. of a servant

  1421. girl in

  1422. the high

  1423. priest's

  1424. courtyard.

  1425. How on

  1426. earth is

  1427. this the

  1428. same person?

  1429. How does

  1430. Peter have

  1431. this kind

  1432. of boldness?

  1433. Remember

  1434. this isn't

  1435. just the

  1436. scary

  1437. Sanhedrin

  1438. who has

  1439. a lot

  1440. of power

  1441. this is

  1442. the scary

  1443. Sanhedrin

  1444. that crucified

  1445. Christ.

  1446. Would they

  1447. be crucified

  1448. as well?

  1449. I mean

  1450. we have

  1451. the second

  1452. part of

  1453. chapter 4

  1454. we know

  1455. that they

  1456. don't get

  1457. crucified

  1458. but what

  1459. would stop

  1460. the Sanhedrin

  1461. from stringing

  1462. these guys

  1463. up as well?

  1464. They had

  1465. no idea

  1466. what was

  1467. going to

  1468. happen

  1469. yet we

  1470. see this

  1471. incredible

  1472. boldness

  1473. confidence

  1474. so much

  1475. so that it

  1476. says that

  1477. the leaders

  1478. were astonished

  1479. what accounts

  1480. for this

  1481. change?

  1482. Verse 7

  1483. if you want

  1484. to turn

  1485. back

  1486. verses 7

  1487. and 8

  1488. it says

  1489. this

  1490. and when

  1491. they had

  1492. set them

  1493. in the

  1494. midst

  1495. they inquired

  1496. by what

  1497. power

  1498. or by

  1499. what

  1500. name

  1501. did you

  1502. do this?

  1503. Then Peter

  1504. filled with

  1505. the Holy

  1506. Spirit

  1507. said to

  1508. them

  1509. and then

  1510. he goes

  1511. on

  1512. the act

  1513. of coming

  1514. to faith

  1515. is a gift

  1516. of God

  1517. himself

  1518. and when

  1519. that happens

  1520. the Holy

  1521. Spirit

  1522. sets up

  1523. shop inside

  1524. of our

  1525. very soul

  1526. resides

  1527. inside of

  1528. us

  1529. enlivening

  1530. us to

  1531. grow

  1532. in our

  1533. love and

  1534. affection of

  1535. Christ

  1536. teaching us

  1537. truth

  1538. properly

  1539. ordering

  1540. the other

  1541. good things

  1542. in our

  1543. lives

  1544. in such

  1545. a way

  1546. that they

  1547. don't

  1548. impede

  1549. on the

  1550. throne

  1551. of

  1552. Christ

  1553. in our

  1554. lives

  1555. we

  1556. begin

  1557. to

  1558. live

  1559. rightly

  1560. ordered

  1561. lives

  1562. and it

  1563. means that

  1564. our lives

  1565. begin to

  1566. live

  1567. according

  1568. to truth

  1569. truthful

  1570. living

  1571. becomes a

  1572. thing

  1573. of the

  1574. Christian

  1575. not

  1576. perfectly

  1577. we grow

  1578. in this

  1579. but the

  1580. Holy

  1581. Spirit

  1582. given

  1583. to us

  1584. gives us

  1585. great

  1586. confidence

  1587. in the

  1588. truth

  1589. so that

  1590. we can

  1591. be bold

  1592. in the

  1593. face of

  1594. opposition

  1595. so that

  1596. we can

  1597. take hold

  1598. of

  1599. Christ

  1600. when the

  1601. other

  1602. things

  1603. in our

  1604. lives

  1605. that are

  1606. jockeying

  1607. for the

  1608. throne of

  1609. our

  1610. heart

  1611. seem

  1612. wonderful

  1613. and good

  1614. but we

  1615. know that

  1616. Christ

  1617. is better

  1618. Jesus

  1619. said

  1620. that the

  1621. Holy Spirit

  1622. actually is the

  1623. spirit of

  1624. truth

  1625. and he

  1626. says it

  1627. in

  1628. John 16

    John 16:13

  1629. verse 13

  1630. and following

  1631. when the

  1632. spirit of

  1633. truth

  1634. comes

  1635. he will

  1636. guide you

  1637. into

  1638. all the

  1639. truth

  1640. why

  1641. how

  1642. for he

  1643. will

  1644. not

  1645. speak

  1646. on his

  1647. own

  1648. authority

  1649. but

  1650. whatever

  1651. he

  1652. hears

  1653. he

  1654. will

  1655. speak

  1656. and he

  1657. will

  1658. declare

  1659. to you

  1660. the

  1661. things

  1662. that

  1663. are

  1664. to

  1665. come

  1666. this

  1667. is

  1668. what

  1669. happened

  1670. to the

  1671. church

  1672. at

  1673. Pentecost

  1674. bearing

  1675. fruit

  1676. in

  1677. Peter

  1678. so that

  1679. this

  1680. coward

  1681. became

  1682. this

  1683. bold

  1684. proclaimer

  1685. of the

  1686. resurrection

  1687. friends

  1688. it's

  1689. it's

  1690. our

  1691. reality

  1692. as

  1693. well

  1694. we

  1695. will

  1696. fight

  1697. pride

  1698. if we

  1699. look

  1700. to

  1701. God

  1702. and

  1703. ask

  1704. him

  1705. for

  1706. strength

  1707. we

  1708. say

  1709. in a

  1710. sense

  1711. to

  1712. God's

  1713. word

  1714. I'm

  1715. choosing

  1716. to

  1717. believe

  1718. you

  1719. God

  1720. help

  1721. my

  1722. unbelief

  1723. and

  1724. we

  1725. will

  1726. see

  1727. growth

  1728. because

  1729. he

  1730. has

  1731. promised

  1732. as

  1733. much

  1734. that

  1735. we

  1736. walk

  1737. in

  1738. the

  1739. truth

  1740. he

  1741. is

  1742. going

  1743. to

  1744. help

  1745. us

  1746. to

  1747. walk

  1748. in

  1749. the

  1750. truth

  1751. Christ

  1752. says

  1753. in

  1754. John

    John 8 chapter mention

  1755. chapter

  1756. 8

  1757. that

  1758. the

  1759. truth

  1760. will

  1761. set

  1762. you

  1763. free

  1764. that

  1765. there

  1766. is

  1767. freedom

  1768. awaiting

  1769. us

  1770. that

  1771. we

  1772. can

  1773. walk

  1774. in

  1775. so

  1776. to

  1777. wrap

  1778. things

  1779. up

  1780. to

  1781. live

  1782. according

  1783. to

  1784. the

  1785. truth

  1786. of

  1787. God

  1788. that

  1789. there

  1790. is

  1791. no

  1792. other

  1793. salvation

  1794. under

  1795. heaven

  1796. by

  1797. which

  1798. we

  1799. may

  1800. be

  1801. saved

  1802. is

  1803. good

  1804. news

  1805. and

  1806. it

  1807. is

  1808. a

  1809. life

  1810. of

  1811. freedom

  1812. and

  1813. it

  1814. is

  1815. a

  1816. life

  1817. of

  1818. truth

  1819. let

  1820. us

  1821. by

  1822. God's

  1823. spirit

  1824. see

  1825. our

  1826. pride

  1827. grow

  1828. smaller

  1829. and

  1830. smaller

  1831. and

  1832. let

  1833. us

  1834. trust

  1835. in

  1836. the

  1837. risen

  1838. Lord

  1839. Jesus

  1840. Christ

  1841. for

  1842. only

  1843. in

  1844. him

  1845. and

  1846. through

  1847. him

  1848. we

  1849. can

  1850. be

  1851. saved

  1852. let

  1853. us

  1854. pray

  1855. Lord

  1856. we

  1857. thank

  1858. you

  1859. for

  1860. the

  1861. boldness

  1862. of

  1863. your

  1864. saints

  1865. Peter

  1866. and

  1867. John

  1868. and

  1869. Lord

  1870. help

  1871. us

  1872. to

  1873. remember

  1874. that

  1875. that

  1876. same

  1877. Holy

  1878. Spirit

  1879. that

  1880. you

  1881. gave

  1882. them

  1883. at

  1884. Pentecost

  1885. is

  1886. residing

  1887. in

  1888. all

  1889. of

  1890. us

  1891. who

  1892. have

  1893. confessed

  1894. faith

  1895. and

  1896. trust

  1897. in

  1898. you

  1899. Lord

  1900. refresh

  1901. us

  1902. this

  1903. morning

  1904. give

  1905. us

  1906. great

  1907. confidence

  1908. in

  1909. your

  1910. word

  1911. this

  1912. morning

  1913. help

  1914. us

  1915. to

  1916. be

  1917. bold

  1918. and

  1919. to

  1920. trust

  1921. that

  1922. your

  1923. ways

  1924. are

  1925. always

  1926. the

  1927. right

  1928. ways

  1929. and

  1930. that

  1931. all

  1932. the

  1933. other

  1934. ways

  1935. do

  1936. not

  1937. lead

  1938. to

  1939. truth

  1940. but

  1941. they

  1942. lead

  1943. to

  1944. lies

  1945. and

  1946. confusion

  1947. and

  1948. ultimately

  1949. to

  1950. their

  1951. end

  1952. damnation

  1953. but

  1954. Lord

  1955. you

  1956. have

  1957. promised

  1958. to

  1959. hold

  1960. fast

  1961. to

  1962. your

  1963. people

  1964. and

  1965. Lord

  1966. we

  1967. cling

  1968. to

  1969. that

  1970. promise

  1971. this

  1972. morning

  1973. thank

  1974. you

  1975. for

  1976. your

  1977. blessed

  1978. son

  1979. thank

  1980. you

  1981. for

  1982. his

  1983. name

  1984. by

  1985. which

  1986. we

  1987. can

  1988. be

  1989. saved

  1990. amen

  1991. if

  1992. you

  1993. have

  1994. children

  1995. now

  1996. is

  1997. the

  1998. time

  1999. to

  2000. collect

  2001. them
