  1. John 1, it is not the manger story, is it?

  2. It's the beginning of a gospel, but it's not, in a sense, a classic version of the Christmas story.

  3. Nevertheless, it is the traditional story, the traditional reading, rather, on Christmas Day.

  4. It speaks of the light of the world that has come to save it.

  5. You know, one of the biggest disappointments I personally have, but maybe you as well,

  6. with a lot of modern storytelling, specifically movies, is that often there's no clear good versus evil.

  7. There's a ton of gray, there's a lot of nuance and emphasis put on anti-heroes,

  8. and the valorization of vice that's often masked with a kind of living one's truth or discovering one's self.

  9. And all too often, there's a bit of moral relativism.

  10. Again, no good versus evil.

  11. And, I mean, the fact is, real life is full of nuance, and it's full of gray,

  12. and heroes are obviously blemished, and victims are relatable.

  13. But in our stories, it seems like there's this move away from good versus evil.

  14. So, Christine and I watched a movie recently, and it was really refreshing.

  15. There was good versus evil.

  16. There was resolution.

  17. There was redemption.

  18. It ended well.

  19. There wasn't, like, any kind of moral, you know, question marks.

  20. It was nice, and we both commented how it seems like this just isn't the norm anymore.

  21. However, the Christmas story isn't the beginning of a new story,

  22. but, in fact, it is the resolution of the biblical story.

  23. It is, in a sense, the beginning of the resolution.

  24. If you remember a couple weeks ago, I guess it was last week,

  25. we did Lessons and Carols.

  26. And a part of Lessons and Carols, we sing, obviously, it's lovely,

  27. but we rehearse the entire biblical story by going through the Bible.

  28. And we start not in Matthew 1 or Luke 2.

  29. Instead, we start in Genesis chapter 3, after the fall,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  30. where God prophesies that one will come that will destroy the serpent,

  31. all the way back in the opening chapters of the Bible.

  32. The serpent, who is the devil that tempted our first parents to sin,

  33. would not be the victor of the story.

  34. It would be God Himself.

  35. That story and all of what followed

  36. highlights, in a sense, the angst of mankind.

  37. The angst that evil exists

  38. and is darker than a moonless, starless night.

  39. The angst that brokenness and evil and strife,

  40. it's everywhere.

  41. It's ubiquitous.

  42. There's no part of humanity,

  43. in no part of the world,

  44. at no point in time,

  45. where brokenness and evil and sin

  46. didn't touch our race.

  47. And really, it's the angst that we are estranged

  48. from the Creator of Heaven and Earth

  49. without the means to reconcile.

  50. And our best efforts get turned into destructive things.

  51. We feel the angst.

  52. We know the angst.

  53. It's deep in our bones.

  54. And with futility, we try to resolve it to no end.

  55. The biblical story solves the angst.

  56. It resolves the evil.

  57. It fixes the problem.

  58. The biblical story is a story of good versus evil,

  59. light versus darkness,

  60. death versus light.

  61. And in no way does this story end with nuance

  62. or question marks about who the real victor is.

  63. So it is with that angst,

  64. that tension,

  65. that we read these opening verses of John 1, verses 1-5.

    John 1:1–5

  66. It says this,

  67. In the beginning was the Word,

  68. and the Word was with God,

  69. and the Word was God.

  70. He was in the beginning with God.

  71. All things were made through Him,

  72. and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  73. In Him was life,

  74. and the life was the light of men.

  75. The light shines in the darkness,

  76. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  77. I'll read verse 5 again.

  78. The light shines in the darkness,

  79. and the darkness has not overcome it.

  80. The Word who is God,

  81. the Son of God,

  82. it says the Creator of all things,

  83. nothing that is made was made apart from Him,

  84. is the source of life and light,

  85. and was about to fix and restore and redeem.

  86. That good would triumph over evil,

  87. that there's no chance darkness was going to win.

  88. But the question is how.

  89. We'll jump to verse 9,

  90. and John tells us, verses 9 to 11,

  91. The true light, which enlightens everyone,

  92. was coming into the world.

  93. He was in the world,

  94. and the world was made through Him,

  95. yet the world did not know Him.

  96. He came to His own,

  97. and His own people did not receive Him.

  98. So the idea of a deity coming into humanity,

  99. it's not a new idea.

  100. The Greek epics record gods coming down from Olympus,

  101. and messing around with the human world.

  102. There's stories about that,

  103. about how they join and steer the affairs of humanity,

  104. often putting their thumb on the scales,

  105. choosing winners and losers.

  106. So what is the difference between that,

  107. those Greek epics,

  108. and what we read about in John 1?

  109. And you'll see the difference in verses 12 and 13.

  110. But to all who did receive Him,

  111. who believed in His name,

  112. He gave the right to become children of God,

  113. who were born not of blood,

  114. nor of the will of the flesh,

  115. nor of the will of man,

  116. but of God.

  117. The God of Scripture,

  118. the real and only God,

  119. doesn't interact with mankind

  120. to manipulate our affairs,

  121. but He comes into our existence,

  122. that His presence descends down

  123. to resolve the brokenness,

  124. and the angst,

  125. and the evil,

  126. and all of the things

  127. that we find frustrating about this life.

  128. Ultimately, He comes to remove sin and death forever.

  129. Death, that foe of foes.

  130. The God of Scripture does this

  131. by bringing those who are far off near.

  132. And He gives the right to become children of God.

  133. And He does it

  134. by giving us His very Holy Spirit.

  135. Giving us Himself.

  136. The very thing that we long for.

  137. No longer estranged from God.

  138. But we are children of God.

  139. It's a wonderful story.

  140. And it would be lovely

  141. if it just ended in verse 13

  142. in some ways.

  143. It's neat and tidy that way.

  144. But the next verse,

  145. in some ways,

  146. is the linchpin of the whole chapter.

  147. And in a sense,

  148. it makes Christianity a weird religion.

  149. And I don't mean weird in a bad way.

  150. I mean weird in that

  151. it is totally other than

  152. what we would describe as normal.

  153. So let's read it.

  154. Verse 14.

  155. And the Word became flesh

  156. and dwelt among us.

  157. And we have seen His glory.

  158. Glory as of the only Son

  159. from the Father,

  160. full of grace and truth.

  161. So God does all this wonderful thing.

  162. He comes into the world.

  163. But we could read that

  164. potentially symbolically.

  165. If we wanted to,

  166. He gives us His Spirit.

  167. He calls us children.

  168. We're not far off.

  169. Sounds great.

  170. But then it says in verse 14

  171. that the Word, God,

  172. became flesh.

  173. God Himself,

  174. the light that enlightens everyone.

  175. Everything.

  176. The Word that created all things

  177. become flesh.

  178. And is this symbolic?

  179. The answer is no.

  180. It means that He literally

  181. came in the flesh.

  182. Flesh, skin, muscles, blood,

  183. hair, nails,

  184. big toes,

  185. kidneys,

  186. ears, lips,

  187. flesh.

  188. The Word, the light,

  189. has taken on humanity

  190. into Himself.

  191. And not only did He become flesh,

  192. but He dwelt among us.

  193. So unlike the Greek gods

  194. who would dabble

  195. or mess up with human affairs

  196. and then scurry off back to Olympus,

  197. when situations would get crazy,

  198. the Word becomes flesh

  199. and dwells continually

  200. among His people.

  201. And He experiences

  202. everything that there is

  203. to experience

  204. about human life.

  205. So that He,

  206. from His mother's womb

  207. until He is born,

  208. He experiences

  209. what it's like

  210. to develop as

  211. an unborn child

  212. and to be born

  213. and to grow up

  214. in infancy

  215. and into

  216. teen years

  217. and experience puberty

  218. and become a man.

  219. But He also experiences

  220. everything

  221. that there is

  222. to experience

  223. about human death.

  224. And He tasted it.

  225. Everything.

  226. He tasted the pain

  227. of death.

  228. The embarrassment,

  229. in a sense,

  230. the shame

  231. of being

  232. crucified,

  233. naked,

  234. on a cross,

  235. being abandoned

  236. completely.

  237. in fact,

  238. He experienced

  239. separation

  240. and true estrangement

  241. from God.

  242. God became man

  243. and experienced

  244. everything that there is

  245. to experience

  246. as a human being,

  247. but He remained God.

  248. And this is a big part

  249. of the story as well

  250. because God descends

  251. to earth,

  252. takes upon Him

  253. our flesh

  254. as our representative

  255. and when He dies

  256. and rises again,

  257. it means that all

  258. who are in Him,

  259. us,

  260. rise with Him.

  261. It's a promise

  262. of what there is

  263. to come.

  264. All who are in Christ

  265. have the same

  266. future of Christ

  267. to rise with Him,

  268. to glory

  269. forever.

  270. Verse 14 again,

  271. And the Word became flesh

  272. and dwelt among us

  273. and we have seen

  274. His glory,

  275. glory of the only Son

  276. from the Father,

  277. full of grace

  278. and truth.

  279. John 1 tells us

  280. that real greatness

  281. is rooted in humility

  282. for God condescended,

  283. we talked about this

  284. a few weeks ago,

  285. condescended,

  286. left His divine prerogatives

  287. and He came down.

  288. Real greatness

  289. is service.

  290. Christ didn't come

  291. to be served

  292. but to serve

  293. and give His life

  294. as a ransom for many.

  295. So real greatness

  296. is humility

  297. and service

  298. and sacrifice

  299. but it's motivated

  300. by love.

  301. Real glory

  302. is seen

  303. in the lowest descent

  304. of the King of Kings

  305. into the very brokenness

  306. of our world.

  307. The grace of God

  308. given to humanity

  309. in the incarnation.

  310. John 1, 16,

  311. it's not a part of our reading

  312. but I'll read it.

  313. It says this,

  314. And from His fullness

  315. we have all received

  316. grace upon grace.

  317. Friends,

  318. the Christmas story

  319. is one of

  320. God rescuing us,

  321. resolving the tension.

  322. God that does not

  323. leave evil

  324. to win the day

  325. but instead

  326. will win the day

  327. Himself.

  328. No nuance,

  329. no second guessing

  330. that God

  331. in Jesus

  332. born on this day,

  333. Christmas Day

  334. has saved us

  335. and is the ultimate

  336. resolution.

  337. Let's pray.

  338. Lord,

  339. we thank You so much

  340. for this beautiful,

  341. wonderful Christmas message

  342. that Jesus

  343. is God,

  344. the Son of God,

  345. incarnate,

  346. fully man

  347. and fully God.

  348. And Lord,

  349. we thank You

  350. that we can celebrate

  351. this wonderful reality

  352. and that it is

  353. our reality

  354. and that Christ's

  355. reality

  356. rising from the grave

  357. never to taste death

  358. again,

  359. it is our reality

  360. if we are found in Him.

  361. So Lord,

  362. help us

  363. to dwell,

  364. of course,

  365. on the birth

  366. of Christ

  367. but really

  368. the mission

  369. of Christ,

  370. what He came to do.

  371. And we pray this

  372. in Christ's mighty name.

  373. Amen.

  374. Amen.

  375. Amen.

  376. Amen.

  377. Amen.

  378. Amen.

  379. Amen.

  380. Amen.

  381. Amen.

  382. Amen.

  383. Amen.

  384. Amen.

  385. Amen.

  386. Amen.

  387. Amen.

  388. Amen.

  389. Amen.
