  1. If you want to make a name for yourself, make good money, have influence, get power,

  2. you don't move to Flesherton, Ontario, or Dawson, B.C.

  3. You don't move to Chibougamou, Quebec.

  4. You move to Vancouver, or to Toronto, or to Ottawa, or to Montreal.

  5. If you're really ambitious, you move to New York City.

  6. That is the strategy to get big and powerful, and to get money, to get influence, to make a name for yourself.

  7. And it would seem that the early church, in wanting to see the gospel spread, would employ such a strategy.

  8. And in some cases, they certainly do.

  9. But, we come upon a section in Acts chapter 8, where conventional wisdom and best practices kind of go out the window.

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  10. And we see that God, in His sovereignty, will save who He wants to save, how He wants to save them,

  11. and He will grow His church any which way He wants.

  12. God, in Christ, and in Him alone, will build His church.

  13. We look this morning at Philip, the second part of chapter 8, where Philip leaves Samaria.

  14. He meets this Ethiopian eunuch, this official in the court of Candace.

  15. And we gather some very important principles and truths about the gospel, but more importantly, about Christ.

  16. Next, we'll look at three points.

  17. I was talking to Christine.

  18. This is not about this sermon.

  19. But I talked to Christine.

  20. I'm like, listen, I do a lot of three-point sermons.

  21. And, I mean, I wasn't trying to convince her.

  22. She wasn't complaining to me at all about it.

  23. But it's a simple way to break up the text in a way that is digestible.

  24. 95% of us think in categories in this kind of way.

  25. So if you're just like another three-pointer, yeah, another three-pointer.

  26. But listen up.

  27. Here are the three points.

  28. The first point.

  29. Christ will rescue using the obedience of His people.

  30. This is how Christ grows His church.

  31. Christ will save through His Spirit and by His Word.

  32. So He builds His church.

  33. And Christ will restore and redeem, not in part, but in whole.

  34. So let's look right off the bat.

  35. Christ will rescue who He wants using the obedience of His people.

  36. Philip, if you remember from chapter 8, the first part of it, is enjoying great success in Samaria.

  37. The crowds that were gathered around this character named Simon the Magician,

  38. who deceived the people, so much so that they elevated Him to divine status.

  39. They called Him the Great One.

  40. Now, through the proclamation of the Gospel, are embracing Christ as the Great One.

  41. Many were baptized.

  42. If you remember last year, I talked about a thousand-year rift between the Jewish people

  43. and the Samaritan people were repaired and restored.

  44. And that the words of Christ in Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  45. that the church would spread from Jerusalem to Judea to Samaria,

  46. was being fulfilled.

  47. It was a remarkable, remarkable time.

  48. And just like that,

  49. Philip is commanded to go to a desert road in the middle of the day,

  50. the hot of the day,

  51. without explanation.

  52. That bit about going there in the hot of the day,

  53. we read in verse 26,

  54. Rise and go towards the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.

  55. Saying go down to the south is definitely to go down to the literal south,

  56. but in the original language,

  57. it is a turn of phrase that also means at the height of the day,

  58. the hottest it would be.

  59. So,

  60. Philip leaves Samaria,

  61. where there is a boom and revival happening.

  62. People are coming to faith.

  63. Words of Christ are being fulfilled.

  64. Centuries,

  65. millennia-long issues

  66. and animosity are being restored.

  67. It seems like that would be the place to stay

  68. and then strategically leverage for whatever was going to happen next.

  69. But to leave Samaria to go to a desert road in the heat of the day

  70. seems unbelievably non-strategic

  71. and defies conventional wisdom.

  72. But it was an act of obedience.

  73. And Philip obeyed.

  74. Sometimes we are told the reason along with the command that God gives us.

  75. We read in scripture things to flee from

  76. or we feel the Holy Spirit leading us to give or to stand tall

  77. or to make very clear decisions for his glory.

  78. And we know the reason why.

  79. We're given the command.

  80. We're explained in a sense either through scripture

  81. or just the Holy Spirit acting upon our intuition.

  82. If we do this,

  83. this is what will happen.

  84. This is why I'm doing it.

  85. We're given answers.

  86. That makes obedience quite easy in some ways.

  87. I mean, obedience is not easy,

  88. but it makes it easier.

  89. However,

  90. sometimes,

  91. and I'd say more often than not,

  92. we are called to obey God

  93. and he doesn't necessarily give us the reason

  94. or does he explain what will happen to us,

  95. what the consequences will be.

  96. He just calls us to obey.

  97. We are simply assured that as we seek to obey Christ,

  98. by his spirit,

  99. we will be provided for in the areas of our need.

  100. But how that will happen,

  101. when that will happen,

  102. is not necessarily explained to us.

  103. It makes obedience very difficult.

  104. I got permission from Christine

  105. to share this story.

  106. Before we were married,

  107. Christine was on a bit of a fast track

  108. in a political job.

  109. She worked for the Minister of International Trade

  110. and she was being considered

  111. to be the Director of Policy.

  112. Now, she never gave me permission

  113. to tell you about that part,

  114. but I'm happy to sing my wife's praises.

  115. She was doing pretty well

  116. and a few months in,

  117. she felt the call to ministry

  118. and potentially lifelong ministry

  119. and had no idea

  120. if this was legit from the Lord

  121. or if this was just something

  122. that she was potentially feeling at the time.

  123. and in an act of obedience

  124. through lots of prayer,

  125. made the very career-altering decision

  126. to quit

  127. before the decision was made

  128. about elevating her to Director of Policy.

  129. And she worked some jobs

  130. for about six months

  131. and then she decided to go to France

  132. for a year

  133. to work with a missionary couple

  134. in a small, dinky town

  135. that didn't even have a bakery,

  136. a French town without a bakery.

  137. An hour north of Paris

  138. called Le Deluge,

  139. literally the flood.

  140. Lovely couple

  141. and she was going to stay there for a year

  142. to see if she was called to ministry.

  143. Now, I kind of ruined that in one way

  144. and didn't ruin it in the other

  145. because we started dating

  146. and she never stayed in France,

  147. but that's a part of our story

  148. and that's another story.

  149. But Christine made a decision

  150. to follow the Lord,

  151. to obey the Lord,

  152. had no idea what would result

  153. and at the time,

  154. it cost her very much.

  155. Obedience isn't easy.

  156. It can be very scary.

  157. It can be something that

  158. causes us to have sleepless nights,

  159. but it is

  160. Christ's will for us to obey him.

  161. And this is what we see here.

  162. Philip obeys Christ

  163. and he does not know

  164. what will come of it.

  165. Again,

  166. I mean,

  167. put yourself in his shoes.

  168. You are seeing

  169. some serious success

  170. in what you're called to

  171. and then you're called away from it,

  172. but not to another city center

  173. where you could,

  174. again,

  175. leverage the successes here,

  176. over there.

  177. Instead,

  178. you're called to a desert road

  179. in the heat of the day.

  180. The heat of the day here

  181. is very hot in the summer.

  182. In the desert,

  183. in the Middle East,

  184. it is unbearable.

  185. And that is what Philip is called to.

  186. It doesn't make sense.

  187. Meanwhile,

  188. unbeknownst to Philip,

  189. Christ is at work

  190. in this man's heart,

  191. this Ethiopian eunuch,

  192. this official,

  193. this high-ranking official

  194. in the court of Canis,

  195. who's essentially

  196. the effectual leader

  197. of all of Ethiopia

  198. and the kingdom

  199. that stretches from,

  200. can't think of maybe

  201. modern-day Ethiopia,

  202. but it's stretching

  203. from the south of Egypt,

  204. from Aswan,

  205. which is on the Nile,

  206. all the way,

  207. even past Khartoum

  208. in what is today Sudan.

  209. It's a huge area.

  210. And God is already at work

  211. in this man's life.

  212. The narrative continues.

  213. If you follow with me,

  214. verse 27.

  215. And Philip arose and went.

  216. You see that obedience right there.

  217. And there was an Ethiopian,

  218. a eunuch,

  219. a court official of Candace,

  220. queen of the Ethiopians,

  221. who was in charge

  222. of all her treasure.

  223. He had come to Jerusalem

  224. to worship

  225. and was returning,

  226. seated in his chariot,

  227. and he was reading

  228. the prophet Isaiah.

  229. And the spirit said to Philip,

  230. go over and join this chariot.

  231. So Philip ran to him

  232. and heard him reading

  233. Isaiah the prophet

  234. and asked,

  235. do you understand

  236. what you are reading?

  237. I'll just pause there.

  238. This is no peasant farmer.

  239. This is this high-ranking official.

  240. Like I mentioned,

  241. the whole stretch of land

  242. from essentially southern Egypt

  243. to past Khartoum in Sudan.

  244. He's an incredibly influential

  245. and trustworthy person

  246. in Candace's kingdom.

  247. He has the ear of the queen.

  248. It's a bit of a big deal.

  249. He also seems to be a God-fear

  250. with a high regard for scripture.

  251. He is coming back from Jerusalem.

  252. I measured out

  253. how long it would take

  254. to drive,

  255. I mean to drive,

  256. how long the journey would be

  257. rather from Khartoum

  258. all the way to Jerusalem.

  259. It would be over 3,000 kilometers

  260. this guy traveled

  261. to worship the Lord in Jerusalem.

  262. As it turns out,

  263. he is a very strategic person

  264. after all

  265. for the spread of the gospel.

  266. His heart is ready

  267. to hear God's word.

  268. He has influence in Ethiopia

  269. and he is reading

  270. the scriptures

  271. as Philip shows up.

  272. And really we see here

  273. not chance,

  274. but God's sovereignty at work.

  275. The omniscience of the triune God

  276. who knows the beginning

  277. from the end.

  278. Only he knows

  279. how all of these decisions

  280. will reverberate.

  281. He knows that Philip's obedience

  282. will result in him

  283. meeting this Ethiopian eunuch

  284. on a road

  285. that nobody should really be on

  286. at that time of day.

  287. Only God is sovereign over all.

  288. We would do well, friends,

  289. with not telling God

  290. what will work

  291. and what won't work.

  292. That doesn't mean

  293. we can't voice our fears

  294. and our apprehensions

  295. when we are praying to him

  296. if he is leading us.

  297. But let us not be people

  298. to underestimate

  299. the Almighty God,

  300. how he sets things up,

  301. how he works history,

  302. how he orchestrates

  303. men and women.

  304. Let us not tell God

  305. what is and what is not strategic.

  306. What we see here

  307. is a very, very strategic move.

  308. Not in human standards,

  309. but in God's standards.

  310. So if we return back to the text,

  311. we see the official

  312. in his chariot,

  313. which would almost certainly be

  314. some kind of caravan,

  315. some covered wagon,

  316. either pulled by horses

  317. or an ox.

  318. It would be quite the group

  319. of people traveling together.

  320. He would have quite the entourage.

  321. And Philip, in a sense,

  322. by obeying God,

  323. also risks much

  324. because the people,

  325. if you remember the story

  326. of the Good Samaritan,

  327. such roads are littered

  328. with thieves and killers.

  329. And what's to say

  330. that Philip wouldn't be mistaken

  331. as one?

  332. He's just by himself

  333. and he just shows up.

  334. Could he be mistaken

  335. for a killer?

  336. But instead, he obeys

  337. and he runs up

  338. to this official

  339. obeying the Lord.

  340. And what does he see?

  341. He sees him reading

  342. the scriptures.

  343. And he asks a very simple

  344. yet very profound question

  345. in verse 30.

  346. Do you understand

  347. what you are reading?

  348. And this leads us

  349. to our second point,

  350. that Christ will save

  351. through his spirit,

  352. by his word.

  353. So look with me,

  354. verses 30 to 35.

  355. Actually,

  356. verse 30 to 33 here.

  357. So Philip ran to him

  358. and heard him reading

  359. Isaiah the prophet

  360. and asked,

  361. Do you understand

  362. what you are reading?

  363. And he said,

  364. How can I

  365. unless someone guides me?

  366. And the official

  367. invited Philip

  368. to come up

  369. and sit with him.

  370. Now the passage

  371. of the scripture

  372. that he was reading

  373. was this.

  374. Like a sheep

  375. he was led

  376. to the slaughter

  377. and like a lamb

  378. before its shearer

  379. is silent

  380. so he opens

  381. not his mouth.

  382. In his humiliation

  383. justice was denied him.

  384. Who can describe

  385. his generation?

  386. For his life

  387. is taken away

  388. from the earth.

  389. The scripture passage

  390. is found in Isaiah 53

    Isaiah 53:7

  391. verses 7 and 8.

  392. And it's the fourth

  393. and final servant song

  394. in Isaiah.

  395. I mentioned this

  396. over Christmas.

  397. I forget which sermon

  398. but Isaiah has these

  399. four servant songs

  400. they're called.

  401. And in each song

  402. there's this mysterious

  403. figure who

  404. on one hand

  405. seems to represent

  406. Israel,

  407. God's people

  408. but on the other hand

  409. seems to

  410. have the description

  411. more of God.

  412. He does some

  413. wonderful things

  414. and it comes to a climax

  415. in Isaiah 53

  416. where this servant

  417. suffers by

  418. he suffers on behalf

  419. of other people

  420. so that other people

  421. would enjoy

  422. the riches

  423. and blessings

  424. of covenant relationship

  425. with God.

  426. And this is what

  427. this Ethiopian

  428. official,

  429. this Ethiopian eunuch

  430. is reading.

  431. Specifically

  432. he's reading

  433. verses 7 and 8

  434. like I mentioned

  435. and in verse

  436. 33 which is

  437. verse 8

  438. of Isaiah

  439. 53

  440. it reads this,

  441. in his humiliation

  442. justice was denied him

  443. who can describe

  444. his generation

  445. for his life

  446. is taken away

  447. from the earth.

  448. And it describes

  449. this suffering servant

  450. who

  451. before

  452. in a sense

  453. he can

  454. produce offspring

  455. and have a legacy

  456. he is cut off.

  457. And we see

  458. a similarity

  459. with this suffering servant

  460. being identified

  461. with somebody

  462. that would have

  463. in a sense

  464. no legacy

  465. of his own.

  466. Somebody who might

  467. be a eunuch.

  468. Somebody who

  469. cannot have

  470. his own natural

  471. children.

  472. You see

  473. the Ethiopian

  474. official

  475. is searching

  476. the scriptures

  477. for Christ

  478. but Christ

  479. is searching

  480. him out.

  481. Is pursuing

  482. him.

  483. Is looking

  484. for him

  485. so to speak.

  486. So he reads

  487. the scriptures

  488. but he doesn't

  489. understand them.

  490. He needs them

  491. expounded

  492. and explained.

  493. The explanation

  494. of God's word

  495. is an explanation

  496. of God's will

  497. and helping us

  498. to understand

  499. God's character

  500. and this is

  501. accomplished

  502. by God's

  503. Holy Spirit

  504. and also

  505. teachers in the church

  506. and this is why

  507. we are committed

  508. as a church

  509. to going through

  510. scripture

  511. to not have

  512. me come up

  513. and spout off

  514. whatever I've read

  515. this week

  516. or whatever

  517. hobby horse

  518. I'm currently on

  519. but rather

  520. proclaiming

  521. heralding

  522. sharing God's

  523. word

  524. and doing

  525. my best

  526. to explain it

  527. and trusting

  528. that God

  529. is going to

  530. bless that.

  531. God reveals

  532. himself through

  533. his word.

  534. Notice that

  535. the Ethiopian

  536. isn't just

  537. merely reading

  538. the word of

  539. God though

  540. he is humble

  541. and he is

  542. submissive in

  543. heart

  544. and what does

  545. he say?

  546. How can I

  547. understand

  548. unless somebody

  549. guides me?

  550. and then he

  551. invites Philip

  552. to explain

  553. to him

  554. what the

  555. scriptures say.

  556. Listen,

  557. you meet

  558. somebody who

  559. has a lot

  560. of prestige,

  561. a very important

  562. person.

  563. They don't invite

  564. random people

  565. to explain

  566. to them

  567. truth.

  568. You don't

  569. see that

  570. kind of

  571. person invite

  572. somebody in

  573. to explain

  574. anything.

  575. There's a

  576. gap, so to

  577. speak,

  578. between Philip

  579. and the

  580. Ethiopian

  581. official.

  582. But this

  583. Ethiopian

  584. official,

  585. he is hungry

  586. to hear

  587. God's word,

  588. to know

  589. God's touch

  590. and he is

  591. humble enough

  592. to invite

  593. Philip in

  594. to submit

  595. to his

  596. teaching.

  597. We see here

  598. also that

  599. humility is the

  600. true currency

  601. of the church.

  602. God opposes

  603. the proud

  604. but gives

  605. grace to

  606. the humble.

  607. Humility allows

  608. us to have

  609. the right

  610. posture before

  611. Almighty God

  612. so that we

  613. may hear,

  614. mark, learn,

  615. and inwardly

  616. digest God's

  617. word.

  618. That's from

  619. the collect

  620. of the second

  621. Sunday in

  622. Advent.

  623. It's a

  624. beautiful,

  625. very concise

  626. way that we

  627. ought to

  628. approach the

  629. scriptures.

  630. But we can

  631. approach the

  632. scriptures if

  633. we're not

  634. humble.

  635. We're not

  636. asking God

  637. to humble

  638. us, help

  639. us, give

  640. us ears to

  641. hear.

  642. We must ask

  643. questions of the

  644. text and of

  645. God and not be

  646. afraid to voice

  647. our lack of

  648. understanding and

  649. objections.

  650. It helps not

  651. for us to

  652. read through

  653. scripture day

  654. in and day

  655. out or Sunday

  656. in and Sunday

  657. out and close

  658. the Bible and

  659. not seek to

  660. understand.

  661. Children can

  662. understand God's

  663. word.

  664. It is simple in

  665. that way but it

  666. requires for us to

  667. use our gray

  668. matter, to ask

  669. questions, to

  670. wrestle through

  671. God's word.

  672. It's what we're

  673. seeing here with

  674. Ethiopian eunuch.

  675. Verse 34, the

  676. eunuch asks

  677. questions of the

  678. text after we

  679. read Isaiah 53,

  680. 7 and 8.

  681. The eunuch says

  682. to Philip in

  683. verse 34,

  684. About whom, I

  685. ask you, does

  686. the prophet say

  687. this?

  688. About himself or

  689. about someone

  690. else?

  691. Then Philip

  692. opened his

  693. mouth and

  694. beginning with

  695. the scripture, he

  696. told him the

  697. good news about

  698. Jesus.

  699. The careful

  700. reading of

  701. scripture makes

  702. way for

  703. salvation.

  704. Here we see

  705. something very

  706. similar to what

  707. Christ did on

  708. the road to

  709. Emmaus, the

  710. risen Christ.

  711. He is disguised,

  712. he meets the

  713. two disciples as

  714. they are walking

  715. and he begins,

  716. it says, with

  717. Moses and the

  718. prophets to

  719. explain about how

  720. all the scriptures

  721. concern him.

  722. And this is what

  723. we are seeing

  724. here, the

  725. explanation of

  726. the scriptures.

  727. And we see

  728. also that Christ

  729. here is the

  730. key to

  731. understanding

  732. everything.

  733. The gospel of

  734. Christ, it

  735. helps us to

  736. understand the

  737. true purpose of

  738. creation, the

  739. patriarchs, the

  740. exodus, the

  741. deliverance, the

  742. conquering of

  743. Canaan, the

  744. judges, the

  745. kings, the

  746. exile, everything

  747. in the Old

  748. Testament.

  749. The key to

  750. truly understanding

  751. it is Christ.

  752. Tim Keller, who

  753. has gone to be

  754. with the Lord, he

  755. is the pastor of a

  756. Presbyterian church in

  757. New York City, he

  758. talked about how

  759. Christ, reading the

  760. New Testament and

  761. seeing Christ in

  762. the New Testament

  763. and then re-reading

  764. the Old Testament

  765. is like watching the

  766. sixth sense for the

  767. second time.

  768. If you know the

  769. movie, there's a

  770. ton of Easter eggs

  771. in the movie the

  772. first time you watch

  773. it, the second time

  774. you watch it, ah,

  775. that's what this

  776. means.

  777. And anyways, it

  778. opens your eyes to

  779. this whole other

  780. story that is being

  781. played out.

  782. God's word contains

  783. life because it

  784. testifies to the

  785. life giver, which

  786. is Christ Jesus.

  787. And friends, this

  788. Jesus, he saves by

  789. his spirit through his

  790. word, but he also

  791. restores us not in

  792. part, but in whole.

  793. And this leads to the

  794. third and final point.

  795. Look with me, verses

  796. 36 to the end.

  797. And as they were

  798. going along the road,

  799. they came to some

  800. water and the eunuch

  801. said, see, here is

  802. water, what prevents

  803. me from being

  804. baptized?

  805. And he commanded the

  806. chariot to stop and

  807. they both went down

  808. into the water, Philip

  809. and the eunuch.

  810. And Philip baptized

  811. him.

  812. And when they came up

  813. out of the water, the

  814. spirit of the Lord

  815. carried Philip away and

  816. the eunuch saw him no

  817. more and went on his

  818. way rejoicing.

  819. But Philip found

  820. himself in Azotus,

  821. this modern day

  822. Ashdod in the

  823. Israel.

  824. And as he passed

  825. through, he preached

  826. the gospel to all

  827. the towns as he went

  828. north until he came

  829. to Caesarea.

  830. This official has been

  831. searching for God.

  832. And he's been making a

  833. long and expensive

  834. pilgrimage to

  835. Jerusalem.

  836. And maybe it's his

  837. first time.

  838. Maybe he's been making

  839. it for years.

  840. It's arduous.

  841. It's very expensive.

  842. And because he is a

  843. eunuch, the best he can

  844. do when he goes to the

  845. temple is he can go to

  846. the court of the

  847. Gentiles.

  848. If I had a picture of

  849. the second temple,

  850. there are various courts

  851. or malls that people can

  852. go in but go no further.

  853. So if you are a non-Jew,

  854. you can go to the court of

  855. the Gentiles, but you can't

  856. go in any farther.

  857. If you're a Jewish woman,

  858. you can go even farther

  859. than that, but you can't go

  860. as far as Jewish men.

  861. And then if you're a

  862. priest, you can go into

  863. the holy place.

  864. If you're a high priest,

  865. you go to the holy of

  866. holies.

  867. There's degrees here.

  868. At most, at most, even if

  869. he was allowed to go into

  870. the court of Gentiles, that

  871. would be it for him.

  872. He didn't have full

  873. communion, in a sense, with

  874. God, worshipping with

  875. God's people.

  876. Deuteronomy chapter 23,

    Deuteronomy 23:1

  877. verse 1 says,

  878. It's speaking of eunuchs,

  879. and there is more to say

  880. about that, and maybe it'll

  881. hit the Sunday follow-up on

  882. Wednesday when I send it

  883. out.

  884. But in short, eunuchs were

  885. barred from fellowship among

  886. God's people.

  887. He traveled over 3,000

  888. kilometers to worship at the

  889. outer gate.

  890. But he did it because he was

  891. desperate for God.

  892. There is a hunger in this

  893. man where he wants to touch

  894. God, to know God.

  895. With Philip on that desert

  896. road in the hot of the day,

  897. God comes to him.

  898. The man that could only go to

  899. the gate or the court of the

  900. Gentiles, who couldn't ever

  901. even hope in his wildest

  902. imaginations to go to the

  903. holy of holies, where

  904. symbolically, but also in a

  905. very real way, the presence

  906. of God resided, comes to

  907. faith, and the Holy Spirit

  908. makes his dwelling within him

  909. so that he himself becomes the

  910. holy of holies, the very place

  911. where the presence of God

  912. dwells.

  913. It's a remarkable thing to

  914. consider that this man, who

  915. has no business, in a sense,

  916. being in God's presence,

  917. becomes the very temple of God

  918. himself.

  919. He wanted to touch God.

  920. He wanted to know God.

  921. Well, God wanted to touch him

  922. and know him.

  923. And he is baptized.

  924. And he comes into this covenant

  925. relationship with God.

  926. God answers his prayers, and it

  927. is an unbelievably beautiful

  928. picture of how God redeems and

  929. restores those that are far away

  930. and broken.

  931. Not only that, but this man, as I

  932. mentioned before, he could have no

  933. children.

  934. That's why eunuchs were, in a

  935. sense, valued in the ancient

  936. world, because there was no chance

  937. that they could impregnate anybody,

  938. that they had no, in a sense, a

  939. legacy of their own so that they

  940. could be trusted, I guess, to a

  941. higher degree than other people who

  942. weren't eunuchs.

  943. He had no legacy of his own.

  944. And yet, he becomes the very vessel

  945. by which the gospel would then

  946. travel to Ethiopia.

  947. Irenaeus, in the second century,

  948. says that this Ethiopian eunuch,

  949. apparently his name was Simon Bacchus,

  950. he would go back to Ethiopia and

  951. spread the gospel, and that's how it

  952. took root.

  953. He becomes, this man who cannot have

  954. any children himself, becomes the

  955. spiritual father of an entire

  956. segment of the church.

  957. One that still exists to this day.

  958. We also see that it's a fulfillment

  959. of Isaiah chapter 56, and this is

    Isaiah 56 chapter mention

  960. what it says in verse 3, continuing

  961. on to verse 8.

  962. Let not the foreigner, clearly Simon

  963. Bacchus, the Ethiopian eunuch, he's a

  964. foreigner.

  965. Let not the foreigner who has joined

  966. himself to the Lord say, the Lord

  967. will surely separate me from his

  968. people.

  969. And not let the eunuch say, behold, I

  970. am a dry tree.

  971. For thus says the Lord, to the eunuch

  972. who keeps my Sabbaths, who choose the

  973. things that please me and hold fast my

  974. covenant, I will give him my house, and

  975. within my walls a monument and a name,

  976. better than sons and daughters.

  977. I will give them an everlasting name

  978. that shall not be cut off.

  979. That's legacy right there.

  980. And the foreigner who joins themselves

  981. to the Lord, to minister to him, to

  982. love the name of the Lord and to be his

  983. servants.

  984. Everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does

  985. not profane it and holds fast my

  986. covenant, these I will bring to my

  987. holy mountain and make them joyful in

  988. my house of prayer.

  989. Their burnt offerings and their

  990. sacrifices will be accepted on my

  991. altar.

  992. For my house shall be called the house

  993. of prayer for all peoples.

  994. The Lord God who gathers the outcasts

  995. of Israel declares, I will gather yet

  996. others to him besides those already

  997. gathered.

  998. Beautiful picture of how very far God's

  999. arm of redemption can reach.

1000. The Lord saves and restores not in part

  1001. but in whole.

1002. In ways far greater than we could ever

  1003. hope or ever imagine.

1004. An outcast man with a disfigured body,

1005. whether it was by his own hand or by

1006. someone else's, it's not told to us.

1007. However, he's no longer forever outcast.

1008. He is not forever somebody without a

1009. legacy, but instead finds hope and meaning

1010. and purpose in the gospel of Christ.

1011. His life is not just restored, but it is

  1012. a living testimony to the life-giving

1013. spirit of Christ Jesus himself.

1014. It's not just that this damaged man,

1015. this broken man, this in a sense

1016. mutilated man is just given a few

1017. scraps, but he is restored and is used

1018. in ways that he could never hope that

1019. he could be used for.

1020. He is given such a wonderful gift.

1021. Earlier this week, I watched a series

1022. and it's a longer story to it,

1023. a longer explanation, but I'll try to

  1024. sum it up here.

1025. It had a remarkable scene in it.

1026. In it, a Japanese father, he returns

1027. home and after he returns home,

1028. it's very clear that his relationship

1029. with his son is severed, it's broken,

  1030. it's destroyed.

1031. In this whole severed, broken relationship,

1032. a mug is destroyed and this mug,

1033. in a sense, represents their relationship

  1034. and it's in pieces, it's shattered.

1035. So we aren't given much in the way

1036. of background, but this is very clear

  1037. what the mug represents.

1038. And the father, in a moment of clarity,

1039. he begins repairing the item, this mug,

1040. and presents it to his son as a picture

  1041. of contrition and restoration.

1042. And it turns out, what he is doing

1043. is not just a nice prop that the writers

  1044. threw in the narrative,

1045. but it's a Japanese practice called kintsugi.

1046. And this practice is where you take a broken item,

1047. a broken vessel, a pot, something ceramic

1048. or made of, not necessarily a costly item,

1049. but what you do is you repair it with plaster

1050. and powdered silver or gold or platinum

1051. so that the cracks aren't hidden

1052. but are accentuated with precious metal.

1053. And you can look it up if you go home this afternoon.

  1054. Kintsugi dishes are stunning.

  1055. They're gorgeous.

1056. And what is remarkable is that the item is repaired

1057. with the cracks not hidden

1058. but accentuated with something both beautiful and costly.

1059. The piece ceases to be an object of failure

1060. but of restoration and beauty.

1061. And it's not common anymore,

1062. but it is used for holding something beautiful

1063. or you bring it out when there's a special time or occasion.

1064. So the healing of Christ is similar to this kintsugi

1065. for it doesn't discard the broken vessel

1066. nor does it pretend that there wasn't real pain or brokenness.

1067. Instead, it is put back together by Christ

1068. infused with his very spirit,

1069. his very costly self on the cross.

1070. This eunuch is going to remain a eunuch his whole life

1071. but now he is a vessel used by God

  1072. to accomplish God's will.

  1073. His legacy is forever.

1074. It is a wonderful, beautiful picture of God's redemption.

1075. Some of us have gone through a lot of brokenness

1076. and some here that I've had the privilege

1077. to counsel or talk with,

  1078. I have sometimes said,

1079. and this is a confession, a true confession,

1080. that's the Lord brings healing

  1081. but you know what?

1082. Likely we'll have to limp into eternity.

1083. And on one hand, that's true.

1084. But on the other hand,

1085. it surely downplays the power and healing of Christ.

1086. Christ heals to wholeness, not in part.

  1087. And ultimately, yes,

1088. we will not be made completely whole in this life

1089. but in the life to come.

  1090. But in this life,

1091. he offers healing and restoration.

  1092. And he doesn't throw a scrap.

1093. So for some of us who have gone through stuff,

1094. it is almost impossible to think how God can restore it

  1095. and yet he can.

1096. And he'll infuse you with his very self

1097. so you become a vessel of great glory,

1098. not of your own but of his.

1099. This is great hope for us, of course,

1100. but it is especially hope for some of our family

1101. or friends or people we know

1102. who struggle through deep pain of gender confusion

1103. who, God forbid, might have

1104. or will go through some kind of medical procedure

  1105. that will be irreversible.

  1106. And almost certainly,

1107. there will be regret that follows

1108. in the months and years to come.

1109. But what this story tells us

1110. and what the gospel tells us

  1111. that in Christ,

1112. he will not just repair a little bit

1113. but he can use that life

1114. to glorify him in ways

1115. that you just would never have

1116. if you hadn't gone through the brokenness

1117. to where he then puts you together

1118. and then you shine for him.

  1119. Great, great, great redemption

1120. and glory that God will do

1121. through people that have gone through

1122. some terrible, terrible medical procedures.

1123. Christ is in the business, friends,

  1124. of restoration and redemption.

1125. No situation is so damaged

1126. that it cannot be repaired.

1127. No person is so far gone

1128. that he cannot be redeemed.

  1129. No damage so severe

  1130. that Christ cannot recover

  1131. and make beautiful.

  1132. I'll close with this.

  1133. Christ is cut off

1134. so that we can be grafted in.

  1135. He is crushed

1136. so that we can be raised up again.

1137. He is shamed and punished

1138. so that we can go free.

1139. And friends, the freedom that he brings,

1140. again, it's not in part

  1141. but it's in whole.

1142. And it is a freedom

1143. that you will not be able to achieve

1144. in this life apart from him

  1145. but only through him.

  1146. I'll close with this.

  1147. What immediately follows

1148. the servant song of Isaiah 53

1149. is God's eternal covenant of peace

1150. that he makes to all those

  1151. that are called

  1152. and saved

  1153. and respond to him.

1154. Hear these words of hope

  1155. in Isaiah 54

    Isaiah 54:1–5

  1156. verses 1 to 5.

  1157. Sing, O barren one

  1158. who did not bear.

  1159. Break forth into singing

  1160. and cry aloud,

1161. you who have not been in labor.

1162. For the children of the desolate one

1163. will be more than the children of her

  1164. who is married,

  1165. says the Lord.

  1166. Lord,

1167. enlarge the place of your tent

1168. and let the curtains of your habitations

  1169. be stretched out.

  1170. Do not hold back.

  1171. Lengthen your cords.

  1172. Strengthen your stakes.

1173. For you will spread abroad

1174. to the right and to the left

  1175. and your offspring

  1176. will possess the nations

  1177. and will hope

  1178. and will people

  1179. and will people

  1180. and desolate cities.

  1181. Fear not

1182. for you will not be ashamed.

  1183. Be not confounded

1184. for you will not be disgraced.

  1185. For you will forget

1186. the shame of your youth

  1187. and the reproach

  1188. of your widowhood.

1189. You will remember no more

  1190. for your maker

  1191. is your husband.

  1192. The Lord of hosts

  1193. is his name

1194. and the Holy One of Israel

  1195. is your Redeemer.

1196. The God of the whole world

  1197. he is called.

  1198. Let us pray.

  1199. Father in heaven,

  1200. we thank you

  1201. that no matter what

1202. we could possibly go through

  1203. the deepest depths

  1204. of hell on earth

1205. that we could go through

1206. is not too far gone

  1207. for your redemption.

1208. Not just to bring us up

  1209. to a mediocrity

  1210. but to repair us.

  1211. Infusing us

  1212. with your very spirit

  1213. so that we shine

  1214. and we are vessels

1215. to be used for you

  1216. given opportunity

  1217. to shine

  1218. for your glory.

  1219. Lord,

  1220. thank you for this

  1221. Ethiopian eunuch

  1222. and for his legacy.

  1223. Thank you so much

1224. that there is a church

  1225. in Ethiopia

  1226. to this day.

  1227. Lord,

  1228. we thank you

  1229. that

  1230. even when we

  1231. struggle

  1232. to trust

  1233. in your word

  1234. and we might be

  1235. cynical towards

  1236. your promise

  1237. of healing

  1238. that doesn't change

  1239. who you are

  1240. as the great healer.

  1241. Lord,

  1242. we thank you.

1243. help us to know you

  1244. in greater measures

  1245. but more importantly

  1246. to know

  1247. that you know us

  1248. in greater measure.

1249. We pray this in Christ's name.

  1250. Amen.

  1251. If you have children,

  1252. now is the time

  1253. to sign them out

  1254. of Messiah Kids

1255. and we'll quiet our hearts

1256. just for a brief moment

  1257. as we enter

  1258. into a time

  1259. of intercession.

  1260. and we'll continue

  1261. toρίás

  1262. for a long time
