  1. The enemy that attacks from within attacks the hardest, inflicts the most damage.

  2. Fifth columns, friends that you rely upon, those that you confide in, that you invite to eat at your table, those you trust.

  3. But betrayal from these people is a pain that is deeply painful.

  4. It is tragic.

  5. And even more so when that trusted individual is a leader.

  6. There are not many things more tragic in the life of a church when leadership fails.

  7. Whether it be a pastor, a priest, a minister, a youth group leader that engages in some kind of abuse or steals or teaches something antithetical to God and his word.

  8. Deep pain happens.

  9. I have lived in Ottawa almost 18 years.

  10. And since coming here, I mean, almost from the beginning, I've been involved in Christian ministry.

  11. And if you've been in Ottawa for any amount of time, you would know that the church community is in a city of a million people, very tight.

  12. Everybody is maybe two degrees removed, three degrees removed from somebody in another church or in another denomination.

  13. So, when things go awry or when abuses happen, the entire Christian community feels it.

  14. I know I have, and especially recently, in the past two, three years, it is a tragic, tragic thing.

  15. A very painful thing.

  16. We begin our new Lenten sermon series in Jude.

  17. We're going to be in Jude for five weeks over six weeks.

  18. We're going to spend five weeks in Jude, but it'll be over six weeks.

  19. And we're going to take a look at Jude, which is the smallest body of work in the New Testament.

  20. And it is the only one not written by an apostle.

  21. It's very apostolic in its content.

  22. But Jude himself was not an apostle.

  23. However, this is not a book to overlook.

  24. Jude writes with intense authority.

  25. He writes with an edge, this Jude.

  26. And maybe that's just the way you have to write when you have 25 verses, when you're limited, when you have a short letter.

  27. Jude, rather, he is addressing false teaching done by false teachers.

  28. He is seeing that there is a great problem within this church.

  29. It's an unnamed church.

  30. And he wants to see it corrected before it blows up.

  31. So he doesn't sugarcoat anything.

  32. This man is edgy.

  33. I like him.

  34. He also worries me, in a sense, when I read it, because I feel the edge, personally.

  35. Secondly, he wants to address this issue of bad leadership that is causing havoc in the church.

  36. So on one hand, he is an edgy church leader himself.

  37. But on the other hand, he is soft and tenderhearted.

  38. He loves the church.

  39. He does not want to see the church fold.

  40. He doesn't want to see the church crumble.

  41. He doesn't want hurt to be sown through the church.

  42. He wants the church to thrive and for people to enjoy the goodness and beauty of gospel living.

  43. Jude is a man with great resolve.

  44. He is courageous.

  45. He is rock solid in his convictions.

  46. So he writes this letter to encourage the church in the faith, that they would stand firm.

  47. And a lot of letters in the New Testament are written to churches that are facing a lot of pressure from without.

  48. Pluralistic societies existed in the first century, in the early church.

  49. It seems like it's a perennial problem in the church.

  50. But Jude's primary concern is the strife that is happening within.

  51. It is a deeply in-house letter.

  52. And for those in leadership, like myself, and some of you also who are in leadership in the church or will be in the future,

  53. it's a giant gut check, this letter.

  54. So this morning we're going to look at Jude.

  55. We're going to look at the introduction that Ken read, verses 1 to 4.

  56. And in it we'll witness three things.

  57. The first is how Jude reminds God's people of who they are in Christ.

  58. First thing he does.

  59. The second thing that Jude does is Jude encourages God's people in what they need from Christ.

  60. And then the third thing Jude addresses is how God's people ought to contend for the faith alongside or with Christ.

  61. So Jude, again, reminds God's people who they are in Christ,

  62. encourages God's people in what they need from Christ,

  63. and helps God's people to know how they ought to contend for the faith with Christ.

  64. So we'll look, point one, how Jude reminds the people who they are in Christ.

  65. And look with me, the second half of Jude, verse 1.

  66. And it says this,

  67. To those who are called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ.

  68. This is a standard, in a sense, address of how epistles work.

  69. There is a greeting to a specific group of people, those that are called, or the beloved in Christ.

  70. So Jude is not doing something new.

  71. However, Jude is going to get into some very, very intense issues that will take a lot of courage.

  72. And what he is doing right off the bat is reminding God's people who they are.

  73. He is, in a sense, establishing, once again, reminding these people where their foundation is.

  74. He is giving them confidence in the gospel afresh.

  75. They are called, they are loved in God the Father, and are kept in Jesus.

  76. And it's interesting, before we even get into those points,

  77. do you see the Trinitarian overtones in that opening sentence?

  78. To those who are called, the calling of people into the faith is the work of the Holy Spirit.

  79. Beloved in God the Father, we are in right relationship with God the Father once again.

  80. And then we are kept for Jesus Christ.

  81. That is, we will be, in a sense, given the strength and resolve in Christ to make it to the final judgment.

  82. We have all three members of the Trinity at work in God's people in the second part of Jude, verse 1.

  83. One God, three persons.

  84. And that's no mistake.

  85. To know the God that we are serving, the God that we bend our knee to, it is deeply foundational.

  86. So to speak of the Trinity often and always is a very important thing.

  87. To understand that there is only one God, but in the Godhead, God the Holy Spirit is a part of salvation in this way,

  88. and God the Father in this way, and God the Son in that way.

  89. We don't just pray to God the Father and see Jesus, you know, he's done his part on the cross,

  90. he can sit over there, or that the Holy Spirit merely calls us and excites saving faith in our hearts,

  91. but I can do without the Holy Spirit.

  92. Or it's just Jesus only.

  93. Our emphasis is on Jesus only and everything else, God the Holy Spirit, God the Father, fades into the background.

  94. It's not like that.

  95. We are people who follow one God in three persons, and it's deeply important that that's a part of the foundation.

  96. So notice first, though, and we'll move on, the three things that Jude reminds us of in his letter.

  97. The first is that we are called out of darkness, that we are called.

  98. Called into Christ's glorious light.

  99. This, of course, is a reference to salvation.

  100. However, Jude seems to be alluding to something that stretches farther back than what Christ has done on the cross.

  101. I mean, Christ on the cross is the culmination of salvation history,

  102. but who else do we read about in the Old Testament that was called?

  103. We see Abraham.

  104. Abraham was called.

  105. He was a pagan polytheist that was from a part of Mesopotamia.

  106. He was not God's people initially, part of God's people initially.

  107. But what happens?

  108. God calls him out of Ur of the Chaldeans or the Chaldeans, this foreign land.

  109. He calls him out of polytheism.

  110. He calls him out of paganism, of a type of life that is very anti-gospel, anti-God.

  111. And what Jude is trying to say by using this language that we are called by God, by Christ,

  112. is that we stand in this unbroken chain of God calling his people out of darkness, beginning with Abraham.

  113. That in the New Testament, we don't have some kind of new religion that pops up in history 2,000 years ago,

  114. where it had maybe scant reference to centuries or millennia beforehand.

  115. No.

  116. This is the culmination of one story that begins at creation,

  117. but that really begins, in a sense, with Abraham being called out of a distant land

  118. and given promises by God of blessing.

  119. Jude is telling the church and telling us this morning that we stand in that blessing,

  120. that we are Abraham's children.

  121. We look to Abraham, in a sense, as the father of our faith.

  122. This faith, this being called, is the way that God has always brought close those who are far away

  123. so that they may be blessed and be a blessing.

  124. Before Jude even gets into the issues of the false teachers,

  125. he reminds the church that you have been called.

  126. You have no business, in a sense, being a part of God's family,

  127. but you have been called by God in the same way that Abraham has

  128. and that the blessings and promises that Abraham didn't truly see,

  129. you get to live into as a Christian.

  130. It's a beautiful reminder for them and for us today of who we are in Christ.

  131. Notice also that the Christians are beloved in the Father.

  132. This has in mind that we are loved by God and loved in God.

  133. It's a bit of a double meaning, that the love of God,

  134. in a sense, it is the reality of those who are made right with God,

  135. whose sins are no more because of Christ,

  136. but it also speaks to God surrounding us and enveloping us in his love.

  137. So in a sense, it's a bit of a double promise.

  138. That God, he calls us out, he saves us from the life that we lived

  139. and also the danger and the calamity outside the world, the flesh, and the devil,

  140. but it also speaks to God strengthening us from the inside,

  141. giving us spiritual power to do the things that he has called us to do.

  142. Trust and obey.

  143. We sang earlier a fantastic song,

  144. Impossible Without the Spirit's Help.

  145. Notice finally that the Christians in verse 1 are kept for Christ Jesus.

  146. And June mentions this four times throughout his letter, so it's a bit of a big deal.

  147. It speaks to this ultimate future that we can look forward to

  148. when the dead in Christ will be raised from the grave.

  149. And it speaks to God's faithfulness to us,

  150. that the work he has begun, he will see to completion.

  151. That if God saves, he will save to the end.

  152. In a sense, when he says Jude,

  153. when he says that we are kept for Jesus Christ,

  154. it gives us deep assurance

  155. of the degree and the strength

  156. of the salvation that God extends to us.

  157. That if you are a part of his church,

  158. if you have faith in him,

  159. that God's grip on you

  160. is much stronger than your grip on him.

  161. I heard a wonderful

  162. illustration,

  163. and to be perfectly honest,

  164. I forget where I heard it from

  165. this week,

  166. but the idea that we hold on to God

  167. in the same way that,

  168. say, a three-year-old holds on to their dad

  169. their dad's hand as they go into a pool.

  170. And very quickly,

  171. as a two- or three- or four-year-old

  172. holds on to dad's hand

  173. as they go into a pool,

  174. their grip, in a sense,

  175. is less important

  176. than dad's grip on their hand.

  177. The slope going into the deep end,

  178. or at least the deeper part of the shallow end,

  179. it's too much

  180. for a young child to endure,

  181. dad needs to hold on to that hand.

  182. And likewise,

  183. God,

  184. his grip on us

  185. is far stronger than our grip on him.

  186. And praise God for that.

  187. This is what is being reminded,

  188. this is what Jude is reminding us

  189. this morning,

  190. his church back then,

  191. but also us

  192. this morning.

  193. This is very important because

  194. the church is corrupt,

  195. Jude tells us.

  196. It's unorthodox,

  197. it's abusive,

  198. it's greedy,

  199. it's given to sensuality,

  200. that's a catch-all term

  201. of all sorts of different

  202. sexual immorality and debauchery.

  203. And it's in light of that

  204. that we could easily,

  205. easily be swayed or discouraged

  206. and let go,

  207. in a sense,

  208. of Christ.

  209. But he does not let go of us.

  210. Jude reminds us of that.

  211. So,

  212. before addressing the issue at hand,

  213. Jude has reminded his people

  214. who they are in Christ.

  215. He has reminded his people

  216. not in a way that's just

  217. kind of like a hype speech,

  218. an inspirational speech

  219. before a big championship game

  220. or a battle

  221. between two opposing sides

  222. on the battlefield,

  223. but it's a reminder

  224. that they are loved by God

  225. and that he alone

  226. fights their battles.

  227. It is he who strengthens

  228. their weak knees

  229. and it is he who will provide

  230. what is needed for them

  231. to endure and to thrive

  232. in the midst of such great trouble.

  233. Jude is clear to this church

  234. and to us here this morning,

  235. we are people that are precious to God.

  236. And that's not a sentimental

  237. preciousness,

  238. so to speak.

  239. It is a preciousness to God

  240. that is backed with truth

  241. that we can rely on

  242. eight days a week,

  243. all the time.

  244. He has saved us from sin and death

  245. and has made eternal promises

  246. a blessing to us

  247. that go to the end of the age

  248. but begin right now.

  249. He reminds us that God

  250. will not leave those

  251. he has called

  252. that he will not forsake

  253. those he loves.

  254. We need to be reminded

  255. of this often.

  256. This is one of the things

  257. that Israel,

  258. we see in us as well,

  259. that they have to constantly

  260. be reminded.

  261. I've said this in the past,

  262. but the most common

  263. exhortation to Israel

  264. in the Old Testament

  265. is remember.

  266. And why is that the case?

  267. Because we're prone to forget.

  268. Jude is reminding us

  269. of who we are in Christ.

  270. The second point,

  271. and this is in verse two,

  272. that Jude encourages God's people

  273. in what they need from Christ.

  274. So look with me

  275. at verse two.

  276. May mercy, peace, and love

  277. be multiplied to you.

  278. Mercy, love, and peace

  279. in abundance.

  280. The church is reminded

  281. that they have been

  282. shown mercy by God,

  283. especially when it comes

  284. to the final judgment.

  285. No longer are we

  286. sons of wrath,

  287. we are sons of God.

  288. And when I say sons,

  289. sons and daughters,

  290. but I say sons specifically

  291. because what God gives us

  292. is firstborn son status.

  293. If you don't like being

  294. called a son,

  295. if you're female,

  296. the church is called

  297. the bride of Christ,

  298. so it kind of goes both ways.

  299. Firstborn status

  300. as a son

  301. is who we are.

  302. And this is because

  303. of the mercy of God.

  304. This mercy is to be imitated,

  305. especially,

  306. and this is critical

  307. for the rest of the letter,

  308. to those who are courting

  309. or just full-on

  310. into apostasy

  311. and heresy.

  312. If God will accept

  313. the heartfelt

  314. contrition and repentance

  315. of those that are penitent,

  316. should not we?

  317. And more than that,

  318. such mercy leads

  319. to repentance

  320. that God accepts.

  321. What is the point

  322. of seeking mercy

  323. to a cold

  324. and unmerciful tyrant?

  325. The fact that mercy

  326. is even extended

  327. to us speaks

  328. to God's character.

  329. And this is interesting

  330. because during our

  331. communion liturgy,

  332. we pray this prayer

  333. called the prayer

  334. of humble access.

  335. Now, we pray

  336. an adaptation of that,

  337. which I don't know

  338. if I'm,

  339. we've adopted it

  340. from our sending church

  341. and our sending church

  342. is fantastic,

  343. but I actually

  344. kind of love

  345. the original

  346. from the 1662

  347. book of common prayer.

  348. notice,

  349. notice that

  350. this is a prayer

  351. called the prayer

  352. of humble access,

  353. that we come to God

  354. because of the mercies

  355. he's extended to us.

  356. Listen to how

  357. mercy is described

  358. in this prayer,

  359. specifically how it

  360. connects to God.

  361. This is what it says.

  362. You might know it.

  363. It has a bit of a cadence

  364. to it.

  365. We do not presume

  366. to come to this

  367. thy table,

  368. O merciful Lord,

  369. trusting in our

  370. own righteousness,

  371. but in your manifold

  372. and great mercies.

  373. We are not worthy

  374. so much to gather up

  375. the crumbs under thy table.

  376. I'm not going to read

  377. the whole thing,

  378. but this is the last line

  379. and I think the most

  380. important line.

  381. But thou art the same Lord

  382. whose property

  383. is always to have mercy.

  384. It's his very character.

  385. It's who he is.

  386. In the same way

  387. that you could say

  388. God is love,

  389. you could say

  390. God is mercy.

  391. This is who he is.

  392. Mercy,

  393. mercy,

  394. mercy.

  395. Mercy.

  396. Friends,

  397. our God delights

  398. in showing mercy

  399. at salvation

  400. and then throughout

  401. our sinful lives

  402. as we stumble

  403. towards eternity.

  404. So we ought to

  405. in the same way

  406. show mercy to others.

  407. Not easy.

  408. Almost impossible.

  409. How do you show mercy

  410. to somebody

  411. who has hurt you

  412. but who has then

  413. sought forgiveness

  414. and who has truly

  415. been penitent

  416. we look to Christ

  417. for that.

  418. We receive

  419. mercy

  420. so that we then

  421. can show mercy.

  422. And what follows mercy?

  423. It's peace.

  424. This is the second thing

  425. that Jude says.

  426. May mercy

  427. and peace

  428. be multiplied

  429. to you.

  430. So peace

  431. is critical

  432. for the health

  433. of our souls.

  434. We must receive

  435. the peace of God

  436. so that we can be

  437. at peace

  438. with God.

  439. God.

  440. So interesting

  441. that so much

  442. of our connection

  443. to God

  444. is God

  445. making

  446. the connection

  447. with us.

  448. Him

  449. taking the initiative.

  450. Him reaching down.

  451. Him doing the things

  452. that we can't do.

  453. And God continues

  454. to give peace

  455. not just at salvation

  456. but as he holds us fast

  457. amid calamity

  458. and peril.

  459. this does not

  460. imply zen

  461. calm.

  462. This is not

  463. a few deep breaths

  464. type of peace.

  465. It's great.

  466. It's wonderful.

  467. But it is a peace

  468. that is connected

  469. to an assurance

  470. that God

  471. is stronger

  472. and greater

  473. than storms

  474. and calamities.

  475. That God

  476. will hold us fast.

  477. in the next section

  478. Jude will describe

  479. some of the problems

  480. that the church

  481. is facing

  482. and it is

  483. very concerning.

  484. I thank God

  485. that our church

  486. has not experienced

  487. any of this.

  488. I mean

  489. to be perfectly honest

  490. if the church

  491. without God's

  492. provision

  493. and strength

  494. your pastor

  495. would likely quit

  496. if half

  497. of these things

  498. happened

  499. in our church.

  500. Jude is going

  501. to describe

  502. some awful things

  503. and yet

  504. he is going

  505. to also say

  506. that peace

  507. is to be multiplied.

  508. Their faith

  509. is likely

  510. to be shaken

  511. but he prays

  512. that God's people

  513. would enjoy

  514. God's peace

  515. in this situation.

  516. This peace

  517. does not allow

  518. the believers

  519. to falter

  520. but to see

  521. the end.

  522. Finally

  523. we see love

  524. mercy

  525. peace

  526. and love.

  527. Love is given

  528. in abundance

  529. as well

  530. but in this case

  531. it has a specific

  532. focus.

  533. It is a love

  534. that has an

  535. animating power

  536. that helps us

  537. to walk in

  538. obedience

  539. and faithfulness.

  540. As we receive

  541. God's love

  542. in redemption

  543. he continues

  544. to give that

  545. love in abundance

  546. and it invigorates

  547. us to live

  548. lives that are

  549. pleasing and

  550. acceptable to God.

  551. So what does

  552. Jude do?

  553. He encourages

  554. the church

  555. to look to

  556. Christ for

  557. mercy,

  558. peace,

  559. and love.

  560. They're to

  561. animate

  562. and equip us

  563. as we contend

  564. for the faith.

  565. Imagine if it

  566. was omitted

  567. my first point

  568. the second part

  569. of verse 1

  570. and in

  571. verse 2

  572. and we just

  573. the letter

  574. Jude

  575. a servant

  576. of Jesus Christ

  577. boom

  578. right into

  579. verse 3.

  580. No reminder

  581. of who we are

  582. no encouragement

  583. in a sense

  584. to be equipped

  585. by God

  586. and it went

  587. directly

  588. into

  589. beloved

  590. although I was

  591. very eager

  592. to write to you

  593. about our

  594. common salvation

  595. I found it

  596. necessary

  597. to write

  598. appealing to you

  599. to contend

  600. for the faith.

  601. I mean

  602. in many ways

  603. we would crumble

  604. under the pressure.

  605. It would be

  606. very difficult.

  607. I'm supposed

  608. to do this

  609. by myself?

  610. There's certain

  611. people that have

  612. crept in unnoticed

  613. who long ago

  614. were designated

  615. for this condemnation

  616. ungodly people

  617. who pervert

  618. the grace

  619. of our God

  620. into sensuality.

  621. I'm tapping out

  622. to find somebody else

  623. I can't do this.

  624. But you see

  625. when verse 1

  626. and verse 2

  627. are put before

  628. verse 3 and 4

  629. we realize

  630. that it is not

  631. in our strength

  632. that we are

  633. to contend.

  634. It is not

  635. for our glory

  636. that we are

  637. to contend

  638. but it is God

  639. and God alone

  640. who gives

  641. the strength

  642. for his glory

  643. for his renown

  644. and all of a sudden

  645. we see

  646. the immovable

  647. all powerful

  648. completely holy

  649. immutable God

  650. and then we look

  651. at the problems

  652. great as they are

  653. in front of us

  654. and we see

  655. who we serve

  656. and there is no comparison.

  657. We are on the right side

  658. we are with

  659. the right warrior

  660. we have the right strength

  661. we have the right courage

  662. because it is all

  663. in Christ.

  664. So let's look

  665. finally

  666. then

  667. at

  668. our third point

  669. how Jude

  670. reminds God's people

  671. how they ought

  672. to contend

  673. for the faith

  674. with Christ.

  675. so I'll read

  676. verse 3 and 4 again

  677. Beloved

  678. although I was very eager

  679. to write to you

  680. about our common salvation

  681. I found it necessary

  682. to write appealing to you

  683. to contend

  684. for the faith

  685. that was once for all

  686. delivered to the saints

  687. for certain people

  688. have crept in

  689. unnoticed

  690. who long ago

  691. were designated

  692. for this condemnation

  693. ungodly people

  694. who pervert

  695. the grace

  696. of our God

  697. with sensuality

  698. and deny

  699. our only Master

  700. and Lord

  701. Jesus Christ.

  702. There's a lot

  703. at stake here.

  704. The faith

  705. that is

  706. the Christian church

  707. rooted and sustained

  708. in the life

  709. death and resurrection

  710. of Christ

  711. is being actively

  712. attacked

  713. not from without

  714. but from a virus

  715. within.

  716. There's parasites

  717. that are eating away

  718. at the life

  719. and the health

  720. of the church.

  721. It's not from without

  722. it's not be

  723. it's not an attack

  724. from Roman authorities

  725. it's not rival

  726. pagan religions

  727. it is from within

  728. false teachers

  729. that are in the church.

  730. This is not a disagreement

  731. by the way

  732. about a secondary issue.

  733. There's a lot

  734. of secondary issues

  735. even tertiary issues

  736. things that are different

  737. from denomination

  738. or church to church

  739. that don't

  740. not matter

  741. they matter

  742. but they don't

  743. touch on the core

  744. of who God is

  745. and what God has done.

  746. This is talking

  747. about core issues.

  748. They are attacking

  749. Jude says

  750. the common salvation.

  751. Now common

  752. does not mean

  753. ordinary

  754. or unexceptional

  755. but the shared

  756. and widespread

  757. unifying

  758. single message

  759. of salvation.

  760. salvation.

  761. There's no other

  762. salvations.

  763. One church

  764. can't see Christ

  765. as fully man

  766. fully God

  767. and the other

  768. church over here

  769. sees Christ

  770. as an actor

  771. wearing a mask.

  772. It's just God

  773. who takes the

  774. identity of Christ

  775. but then sometimes

  776. he wears a mask

  777. like God the Father

  778. and sometimes

  779. a mask like

  780. God the Holy Spirit

  781. or maybe

  782. Jesus isn't really man

  783. but only spirit

  784. or maybe he's just man

  785. and not spirit

  786. but he's a very holy man.

  787. No.

  788. There's a common

  789. salvation

  790. that is rooted

  791. in the person

  792. of Christ

  793. fully man

  794. fully God

  795. and in his

  796. once for all

  797. salvation

  798. that he won

  799. on the cross

  800. his sacrifice

  801. at Golgotha

  802. that when he died

  803. and rose again

  804. he defeated death.

  805. This is the common

  806. salvation.

  807. This is at its core

  808. the nature

  809. of God.

  810. The salvation

  811. is exclusively

  812. found in Christ

  813. because only Christ

  814. could achieve

  815. a salvation

  816. for people

  817. whose predicament

  818. was so dire.

  819. Our redemption

  820. was so impossible

  821. to achieve

  822. unless God

  823. himself

  824. achieved it.

  825. That's why

  826. that's why

  827. it's one faith

  828. because there's

  829. only one Savior

  830. and only one God.

  831. God.

  832. That's why

  833. we must not

  834. reduce the salvation

  835. to an understanding

  836. and a sense

  837. of conversion

  838. alone

  839. but understand

  840. it to be

  841. more robust

  842. and rich.

  843. So Jude here

  844. and we'll see

  845. this over the

  846. weeks to come

  847. Jude has in mind

  848. salvation

  849. from condemnation

  850. that there's

  851. salvation

  852. from judgment

  853. from punishment

  854. from conviction

  855. from destruction

  856. that this

  857. salvation

  858. that is

  859. offered to us

  860. by Christ

  861. is completely

  862. completely

  863. it envelops us

  864. there's no area

  865. of our life

  866. it does not touch

  867. no part of us

  868. that needs redeeming

  869. that it does not

  870. redeem.

  871. This is the faith

  872. that's worth defending

  873. and contending for.

  874. Notice that

  875. this contending

  876. isn't for

  877. just the clergy

  878. but it's for

  879. all Christians

  880. does not mean

  881. if you're

  882. again kind of

  883. feeling like

  884. I do not feel

  885. like contending

  886. for the faith

  887. I'm somebody

  888. who's a

  889. behind the scenes

  890. person.

  891. Okay understand

  892. that God has

  893. made you in a

  894. certain way

  895. everybody is not

  896. going to contend

  897. for the faith

  898. in the same

  899. type of way

  900. but nevertheless

  901. contending for

  902. the faith

  903. is for all

  904. Christians.

  905. For all

  906. Christians

  907. whether you are

  908. laity or

  909. clergy

  910. because there is

  911. only one kind

  912. of Christian

  913. those that are

  914. saved by Christ

  915. I am no

  916. more holy

  917. than you

  918. sitting in

  919. these orange

  920. chairs at

  921. Holy Redeemer

  922. I have a

  923. different role

  924. in the church

  925. but I am the

  926. same sinner

  927. in a sense

  928. that is saved

  929. by Christ

  930. as you are

  931. we are all

  932. called to

  933. contend

  934. for the faith

  935. and how do we

  936. contend for the

  937. faith?

  938. The word used

  939. here is

  940. very much

  941. an aggressive

  942. type of

  943. contending

  944. and again

  945. that doesn't

  946. mean you

  947. have to be

  948. aggressive

  949. but it means

  950. you have to

  951. be active

  952. in contending

  953. for the

  954. faith

  955. whenever the

  956. faith is

  957. misconstrued

  958. whenever it's

  959. perverted

  960. whenever there's

  961. a grave error

  962. that leads to

  963. other things

  964. that are called

  965. salvific

  966. or looked to

  967. for salvation

  968. that certainly

  969. are not

  970. Christ

  971. that is when

  972. we push back

  973. that's when we

  974. ask questions

  975. when we

  976. when we do

  977. not go

  978. along

  979. and we

  980. resist

  981. things that

  982. are not

  983. of Christ

  984. orthodoxy

  985. matters

  986. it just

  987. does

  988. it does

  989. I mean

  990. there's

  991. different

  992. expressions

  993. of the

  994. faith

  995. in different

  996. contexts

  997. in different

  998. parts of the

  999. world

  1000. in different

  1001. traditions

  1002. but orthodoxy

  1003. does not

  1004. change

  1005. the core

  1006. of our

  1007. faith

  1008. cannot

  1009. change

  1010. and that

  1011. is what

  1012. Jude is

  1013. calling us

  1014. to contend

  1015. for

  1016. this is why

  1017. we are

  1018. serious about

  1019. confessing

  1020. and declaring

  1021. the creed

  1022. together every

  1023. week

  1024. but notice

  1025. that the

  1026. creed

  1027. confessing

  1028. it is

  1029. not enough

  1030. if it was

  1031. enough

  1032. the Anglican

  1033. Church of

  1034. Canada

  1035. or the

  1036. Presbyterian

  1037. Church of

  1038. Canada

  1039. or the

  1040. United

  1041. Church of

  1042. Canada

  1043. they would

  1044. be rock

  1045. solid

  1046. robust

  1047. in their

  1048. orthodoxy

  1049. but they

  1050. have not

  1051. they've

  1052. drifted

  1053. into

  1054. teachings

  1055. that do

  1056. not

  1057. resemble

  1058. the

  1059. gospel

  1060. of

  1061. Christ

  1062. they

  1063. departed

  1064. from the

  1065. very

  1066. faith

  1067. that

  1068. Jude

  1069. is

  1070. commending

  1071. us

  1072. to

  1073. contend

  1074. for

  1075. our

  1076. faith

  1077. it is

  1078. a beautiful

  1079. thing

  1080. but it

  1081. can be

  1082. uncomfortable

  1083. and there

  1084. are

  1085. pressures

  1086. to

  1087. adjust

  1088. things

  1089. to lean

  1090. into

  1091. nuance

  1092. a bit

  1093. more

  1094. to

  1095. explain

  1096. things

  1097. away

  1098. or to

  1099. talk

  1100. about

  1101. yeah

  1102. that was

  1103. it's a

  1104. tough

  1105. saying

  1106. in the

  1107. Bible

  1108. but

  1109. it's

  1110. cultural

  1111. and yes

  1112. there's a

  1113. place to

  1114. talk about

  1115. cultural

  1116. specifics

  1117. or there

  1118. is nuance

  1119. in

  1120. God's

  1121. word

  1122. but

  1123. are we

  1124. talking

  1125. about such

  1126. things

  1127. because

  1128. there's

  1129. an

  1130. embarrassment

  1131. and I

  1132. will say

  1133. first

  1134. thing

  1135. I had

  1136. a

  1137. conversation

  1138. with

  1139. somebody

  1140. on

  1141. Friday

  1142. you

  1143. believe

  1144. in

  1145. three

  1146. gods

  1147. no

  1148. not

  1149. really

  1150. and then

  1151. I'm

  1152. stumbling

  1153. over my

  1154. words

  1155. and

  1156. eventually

  1157. the guy

  1158. was very

  1159. gracious

  1160. I was

  1161. able to

  1162. explain

  1163. something

  1164. but my

  1165. first gut

  1166. reaction

  1167. was

  1168. yeah I

  1169. don't know

  1170. how to

  1171. explain

  1172. this

  1173. this is

  1174. really

  1175. hard

  1176. and it's

  1177. kind of

  1178. embarrassing

  1179. and it

  1180. seems like

  1181. a contradiction

  1182. and I

  1183. don't want

  1184. to be

  1185. a dummy

  1186. in front

  1187. of anybody

  1188. how about

  1189. doctrines

  1190. around

  1191. human

  1192. sexuality

  1193. how about

  1194. doctrines

  1195. around

  1196. gender

  1197. roles

  1198. how about

  1199. different

  1200. doctrines

  1201. around

  1202. exclusivity

  1203. which

  1204. ultimately

  1205. means that

  1206. our

  1207. Mormon

  1208. friends

  1209. or our

  1210. Muslim

  1211. friends

  1212. or our

  1213. atheistic

  1214. friends

  1215. are

  1216. not just

  1217. wrong

  1218. but they

  1219. are deeply

  1220. deeply

  1221. in error

  1222. it's a

  1223. hard

  1224. conversation

  1225. to have

  1226. but this

  1227. is what

  1228. our faith

  1229. proclaims

  1230. and the

  1231. pressures

  1232. from without

  1233. can cause

  1234. us to

  1235. make

  1236. compromises

  1237. within

  1238. and Jude

  1239. is saying

  1240. contend

  1241. see we

  1242. have

  1243. often

  1244. times

  1245. our

  1246. default

  1247. is

  1248. it is

  1249. to bolster

  1250. our own

  1251. reputation

  1252. and

  1253. contend

  1254. for our

  1255. own

  1256. reputation

  1257. and our

  1258. own

  1259. glory

  1260. but not

  1261. Christ's

  1262. when it

  1263. should be

  1264. the opposite

  1265. what do

  1266. I mean

  1267. the

  1268. apostle

  1269. Paul

  1270. in

  1271. Philippians

  1272. he's

  1273. addressing

  1274. some

  1275. issue

  1276. where

  1277. there

  1278. are

  1279. people

  1280. proclaiming

  1281. the

  1282. gospel

  1283. because

  1284. they

  1285. are

  1286. envious

  1287. of him

  1288. and they

  1289. are

  1290. jealous

  1291. of him

  1292. and he

  1293. goes

  1294. I don't

  1295. care

  1296. as they're

  1297. preaching

  1298. the gospel

  1299. what do

  1300. I care

  1301. if I

  1302. look stupid

  1303. in this

  1304. as long

  1305. as Christ

  1306. is glorified

  1307. as long

  1308. as the

  1309. gospel

  1310. is going

  1311. out

  1312. as long

  1313. as people

  1314. are

  1315. and the

  1316. idea is

  1317. that they're

  1318. preaching

  1319. the orthodox

  1320. gospel

  1321. he's like

  1322. what do

  1323. I care

  1324. but if you

  1325. go to

  1326. Galatians

  1327. the apostle

  1328. Peter

  1329. is

  1330. screwing

  1331. around

  1332. with the

  1333. gospel

  1334. he is

  1335. adding to

  1336. the gospel

  1337. and Paul

  1338. he is risking

  1339. his own

  1340. reputation

  1341. in standing

  1342. in the church

  1343. and he

  1344. confronts

  1345. Peter

  1346. for the

  1347. glory

  1348. of Christ

  1349. because in

  1350. the end

  1351. the apostle

  1352. Paul is about

  1353. Christ's glory

  1354. over his

  1355. own

  1356. and if

  1357. I'm

  1358. honest

  1359. it's

  1360. the

  1361. reverse

  1362. nine

  1363. times

  1364. out of

  1365. ten

  1366. and if

  1367. you're

  1368. like me

  1369. it's

  1370. probably

  1371. something

  1372. similar

  1373. Jude is

  1374. saying

  1375. be about

  1376. God's

  1377. glory

  1378. contend

  1379. for

  1380. orthodoxy

  1381. stand

  1382. for truth

  1383. even if

  1384. you might

  1385. be called

  1386. a dummy

  1387. even if

  1388. you look

  1389. stupid

  1390. even if

  1391. you

  1392. offend

  1393. not because

  1394. you're

  1395. rough or

  1396. brash

  1397. but because

  1398. gently

  1399. and mercifully

  1400. and with

  1401. kindness

  1402. you state

  1403. the truth

  1404. I stand

  1405. on the

  1406. shoulders

  1407. as a

  1408. minister

  1409. in the

  1410. Anglican

  1411. Network

  1412. of Canada

  1413. that is

  1414. our

  1415. denomination

  1416. I stand

  1417. on the

  1418. shoulders

  1419. of

  1420. George

  1421. Sinclair

  1422. and David

  1423. Short

  1424. and David

  1425. Crawley

  1426. just a few

  1427. names

  1428. Ray David

  1429. Glenn

  1430. men

  1431. and women

  1432. as well

  1433. who left

  1434. the Anglican

  1435. Church of

  1436. Canada

  1437. almost 15

  1438. years ago

  1439. because

  1440. they spent

  1441. almost two

  1442. decades

  1443. trying to

  1444. call the

  1445. church back

  1446. to orthodoxy

  1447. contending for

  1448. the faith

  1449. and they

  1450. ultimately had

  1451. to leave

  1452. the church

  1453. I asked

  1454. George

  1455. recently

  1456. he's the

  1457. minister

  1458. downtown

  1459. he mentored

  1460. me and

  1461. really is a

  1462. huge part

  1463. of this

  1464. church

  1465. the life

  1466. of this

  1467. church

  1468. I asked

  1469. him like

  1470. what was

  1471. the fallout

  1472. from that

  1473. he said

  1474. people had

  1475. nervous

  1476. breakdowns

  1477. like a

  1478. lot of

  1479. people had

  1480. nervous

  1481. breakdowns

  1482. it was

  1483. tough

  1484. we're

  1485. flesh and

  1486. blood

  1487. like you

  1488. have the

  1489. world kind

  1490. of collapsing

  1491. in their

  1492. world collapsing

  1493. in on them

  1494. okay we're

  1495. going to stand

  1496. for the truth

  1497. we're going to

  1498. contend but it

  1499. was really

  1500. really difficult

  1501. people lost

  1502. parts of their

  1503. pensions

  1504. their names

  1505. were dragged

  1506. through the

  1507. mud

  1508. a lot of

  1509. people still

  1510. meet in

  1511. schools

  1512. and community

  1513. centers

  1514. after leaving

  1515. gorgeous

  1516. beautiful

  1517. stained glass

  1518. historic

  1519. buildings

  1520. that

  1521. that burns

  1522. it does

  1523. but is it

  1524. worth it

  1525. I think so

  1526. our church

  1527. our church

  1528. is around

  1529. because of

  1530. people contending

  1531. for the

  1532. faith

  1533. but how

  1534. does

  1535. the need

  1536. for contending

  1537. how does

  1538. that even

  1539. happen

  1540. how do

  1541. these

  1542. perversions

  1543. come about

  1544. in the

  1545. church

  1546. much like

  1547. all issues

  1548. they come

  1549. slowly

  1550. and unnoticed

  1551. the whole

  1552. frog in a

  1553. pot of

  1554. boiling water

  1555. small

  1556. compromises

  1557. that mount

  1558. fear and

  1559. cowardice

  1560. that masks

  1561. itself as

  1562. niceness

  1563. and mercy

  1564. look again

  1565. at verse

  1566. four

  1567. for certain

  1568. people have

  1569. crept in

  1570. unnoticed

  1571. who long ago

  1572. were designated

  1573. for this

  1574. condemnation

  1575. ungodly

  1576. people who

  1577. pervert the

  1578. grace of

  1579. our God

  1580. into

  1581. sensuality

  1582. and deny

  1583. our only

  1584. master and

  1585. lord Jesus

  1586. Christ

  1587. Jude says

  1588. that

  1589. people have

  1590. crept

  1591. into the

  1592. church

  1593. unnoticed

  1594. which would

  1595. imply that

  1596. people were

  1597. not contending

  1598. for the

  1599. faith

  1600. and that's

  1601. not to

  1602. say

  1603. that we

  1604. ought to

  1605. have a

  1606. hyper

  1607. fundamentalist

  1608. group of

  1609. people

  1610. that are

  1611. splitting

  1612. hairs

  1613. that are

  1614. getting into

  1615. outrageously

  1616. long

  1617. discussions

  1618. about

  1619. minutia

  1620. of doctrine

  1621. that some

  1622. theologian

  1623. 600 years

  1624. ago

  1625. gone to

  1626. some kind

  1627. of fight

  1628. with three

  1629. other people

  1630. that believed

  1631. in it

  1632. like ridiculous

  1633. things

  1634. no

  1635. but it

  1636. means

  1637. contending

  1638. for

  1639. orthodoxy

  1640. I mean I'm

  1641. going to say

  1642. that a lot

  1643. contending

  1644. for the

  1645. truth

  1646. is an

  1647. exceptionally

  1648. strong

  1649. command here

  1650. to contend

  1651. because the

  1652. teachers that

  1653. have crept in

  1654. are exceptionally

  1655. strong

  1656. they're

  1657. deceptive

  1658. and we also

  1659. can see that

  1660. this is a bit

  1661. of a perennial

  1662. problem in the

  1663. church so it's

  1664. not just we

  1665. are living in a

  1666. tough time right

  1667. now although in

  1668. some ways we

  1669. are but it's no

  1670. different from any

  1671. other generation

  1672. every generation

  1673. must contend

  1674. our temptation

  1675. is

  1676. is to

  1677. pretend like

  1678. we are in

  1679. the good days

  1680. and I've said

  1681. this actually a

  1682. number of times

  1683. and I believe

  1684. it it's true

  1685. but this type

  1686. of thinking

  1687. if it's clung

  1688. to or

  1689. celebrated too

  1690. much maybe

  1691. this is a bit

  1692. of a problem

  1693. I have said

  1694. that we are

  1695. in like a

  1696. honeymoon a

  1697. sweet spot

  1698. with our

  1699. church like

  1700. when

  1701. when will

  1702. this shoe

  1703. drop I

  1704. don't think

  1705. it will I

  1706. think it's a

  1707. beautiful thing

  1708. but that kind

  1709. of mentality

  1710. as wonderful

  1711. as it is as

  1712. as beautiful

  1713. as these two

  1714. and a half

  1715. years have

  1716. been it

  1717. can

  1718. cause us

  1719. to be blind

  1720. to the

  1721. slow

  1722. introduction

  1723. of false

  1724. teaching into

  1725. the church

  1726. we must be

  1727. on guard

  1728. we must

  1729. contend

  1730. there are

  1731. always

  1732. difficult

  1733. truths

  1734. and falsehoods

  1735. that come

  1736. into the

  1737. church

  1738. it was the

  1739. same in

  1740. 2024

  1741. as it was

  1742. in 1807

  1743. by the way

  1744. that's

  1745. when the

  1746. abolition of

  1747. the slave

  1748. trade

  1749. happened

  1750. happened

  1751. in 1662

  1752. the restoration

  1753. in a sense

  1754. after the

  1755. civil war

  1756. 1517

  1757. with Martin

  1758. Luther

  1759. 1384

  1760. is the

  1761. year when

  1762. John

  1763. Wycliffe

  1764. was

  1765. was martyred

  1766. because he

  1767. stood for

  1768. the truth

  1769. the 11th

  1770. century

  1771. the 6th

  1772. century

  1773. 5th

  1774. on and on

  1775. all the way

  1776. to the

  1777. beginning

  1778. there's

  1779. always

  1780. difficulties

  1781. perennial

  1782. problems

  1783. in the

  1784. church

  1785. that we

  1786. need to

  1787. contend

  1788. for

  1789. the faith

  1790. is always

  1791. at risk

  1792. it has

  1793. always been

  1794. the case

  1795. throughout

  1796. the entire

  1797. Bible

  1798. so it's

  1799. not simply

  1800. that Jude

  1801. here is

  1802. talking about

  1803. listen

  1804. there's

  1805. something

  1806. that has

  1807. happened

  1808. in this

  1809. church

  1810. it's new

  1811. to the

  1812. life of

  1813. God's

  1814. people

  1815. no

  1816. Jude

  1817. will give

  1818. and we'll

  1819. see this

  1820. in the

  1821. weeks

  1822. to come

  1823. nine

  1824. different

  1825. examples

  1826. from the

  1827. Old Testament

  1828. or the

  1829. Hebrew

  1830. Bible

  1831. of opposition

  1832. to God's

  1833. salvation

  1834. these false

  1835. teachers

  1836. in the

  1837. church

  1838. that is

  1839. why there

  1840. is a

  1841. reference

  1842. to long

  1843. ago

  1844. it says

  1845. this in

  1846. verse 4

  1847. it's

  1848. to say

  1849. in a

  1850. sense

  1851. that the

  1852. issue

  1853. of false

  1854. teaching

  1855. has always

  1856. been

  1857. and will

  1858. always

  1859. be

  1860. always

  1861. at its

  1862. core

  1863. this false

  1864. teaching

  1865. it says

  1866. at the

  1867. bottom

  1868. of verse

  1869. 4

  1870. is this

  1871. denial

  1872. of

  1873. Jesus

  1874. as

  1875. sovereign

  1876. and

  1877. Lord

  1878. that

  1879. somehow

  1880. we are

  1881. in charge

  1882. and God

  1883. is not

  1884. the throne

  1885. of our

  1886. hearts

  1887. the throne

  1888. of the

  1889. church

  1890. in a

  1891. sense

  1892. is no

  1893. longer

  1894. Christ

  1895. but is

  1896. our

  1897. own

  1898. it

  1899. always

  1900. has

  1901. to do

  1902. with

  1903. the

  1904. sovereignty

  1905. and lordship

  1906. of God

  1907. and it's

  1908. so interesting

  1909. that throughout

  1910. the Old Testament

  1911. and we'll touch

  1912. on this

  1913. in a couple

  1914. weeks

  1915. because Jude

  1916. references Sodom

  1917. and Gomorrah

  1918. but whenever

  1919. there is a

  1920. false

  1921. doctrine

  1922. or when

  1923. orthodoxy is

  1924. abandoned

  1925. or when this

  1926. false teaching

  1927. comes in

  1928. there always

  1929. seems to

  1930. be

  1931. sexual

  1932. permissiveness

  1933. sensuality

  1934. debauchery

  1935. that mixes

  1936. itself

  1937. into false

  1938. worship

  1939. throughout

  1940. the church's

  1941. history

  1942. into the

  1943. Old Testament

  1944. even I mean

  1945. we see it

  1946. in some ways

  1947. even with

  1948. Noah

  1949. after the

  1950. flood

  1951. false worship

  1952. has an

  1953. interesting

  1954. relationship

  1955. with sexual

  1956. immorality

  1957. we'll touch

  1958. on that

  1959. in weeks

  1960. to come

  1961. so what

  1962. are we

  1963. to do

  1964. well

  1965. I'll go

  1966. back to

  1967. verse 1

  1968. and 2

  1969. we are

  1970. to remind

  1971. ourselves

  1972. and each

  1973. other of

  1974. who we

  1975. are in

  1976. Christ

  1977. and we

  1978. are to

  1979. feed on

  1980. Christ

  1981. what he

  1982. has done

  1983. for us

  1984. in his

  1985. word

  1986. at the

  1987. table

  1988. remembering

  1989. that he

  1990. has extended

  1991. to us

  1992. mercy

  1993. peace

  1994. and love

  1995. we must

  1996. contend

  1997. for the

  1998. faith

  1999. in light

  2000. of that

  2001. we must

  2002. cling to

  2003. God's

  2004. word

  2005. and remember

  2006. that as

  2007. we are a

  2008. part of the

  2009. Protestant

  2010. Reformation

  2011. we are a

  2012. church that

  2013. has a great

  2014. history

  2015. a great

  2016. tradition

  2017. but we

  2018. also

  2019. embrace

  2020. the very

  2021. idea that

  2022. we are

  2023. a reformed

  2024. church

  2025. always

  2026. reforming

  2027. the

  2028. reformers

  2029. they would

  2030. say

  2031. ecclesia

  2032. semper

  2033. reformanda

  2034. the church

  2035. that is

  2036. always

  2037. reforming

  2038. always going

  2039. back to

  2040. the source

  2041. to the

  2042. scriptures

  2043. always remembering

  2044. reminding

  2045. ourselves of

  2046. the gospel

  2047. of the truth

  2048. of who God

  2049. is

  2050. of what he

  2051. has done

  2052. who Jesus

  2053. is

  2054. what the

  2055. incarnation

  2056. is

  2057. to feed

  2058. on that

  2059. truth

  2060. it's also

  2061. very important

  2062. when we

  2063. consider all

  2064. of this

  2065. that we

  2066. do not

  2067. think of

  2068. ourselves

  2069. as somehow

  2070. prone

  2071. or not

  2072. prone

  2073. to dangers

  2074. and falsehoods

  2075. coming in

  2076. to our

  2077. church

  2078. or to our

  2079. own

  2080. lives

  2081. into my

  2082. life

  2083. I would

  2084. say pray

  2085. for me

  2086. pray that

  2087. I would

  2088. be a

  2089. faithful

  2090. minister

  2091. please

  2092. I mean

  2093. I don't

  2094. just say

  2095. that

  2096. pray that

  2097. I mean

  2098. I know

  2099. the darkness

  2100. of my

  2101. heart

  2102. God knows

  2103. it even

  2104. more

  2105. than I

  2106. do

  2107. but pray

  2108. for me

  2109. pray for

  2110. each other

  2111. as well

  2112. have gut

  2113. checks

  2114. ask

  2115. yourselves

  2116. am I

  2117. walking

  2118. in the

  2119. truth

  2120. of

  2121. Christ

  2122. if

  2123. yes

  2124. Lord

  2125. help me

  2126. to endure

  2127. and to

  2128. maintain

  2129. if not

  2130. I confess

  2131. my sins

  2132. I throw

  2133. myself at

  2134. your mercy

  2135. I want

  2136. to receive

  2137. your peace

  2138. why

  2139. because it's

  2140. an expression

  2141. of your

  2142. love

  2143. so friends

  2144. do not

  2145. depart

  2146. from the

  2147. gospel

  2148. as you

  2149. contend

  2150. for the

  2151. faith

  2152. feed on

  2153. the gospel

  2154. cling to

  2155. the gospel

  2156. treasure

  2157. the gospel

  2158. and let's

  2159. do that

  2160. together

  2161. amen

  2162. let us

  2163. pray

  2164. father

  2165. thank you

  2166. for these

  2167. edgy

  2168. words

  2169. but also

  2170. incredibly

  2171. important

  2172. and

  2173. pertinent

  2174. words

  2175. for us

  2176. today

  2177. this church

  2178. February

  2179. 11th

  2180. here in

  2181. Kanata

  2182. lord

  2183. would you

  2184. please

  2185. remind us

  2186. of

  2187. in a

  2188. sense

  2189. the

  2190. precipice

  2191. that we

  2192. stand

  2193. upon

  2194. that

  2195. without

  2196. you

  2197. things

  2198. go

  2199. awry

  2200. things

  2201. go

  2202. downhill

  2203. things

  2204. get

  2205. really

  2206. messy

  2207. and chaotic

  2208. and havoc

  2209. and calamity

  2210. become the

  2211. flavors of

  2212. the church

  2213. but lord

  2214. we don't

  2215. want that

  2216. we want

  2217. to contend

  2218. for the

  2219. faith

  2220. by your

  2221. strength

  2222. remind us

  2223. who we

  2224. are

  2225. equip us

  2226. with you

  2227. and lord

  2228. we pray

  2229. that

  2230. that

  2231. everything

  2232. that you

  2233. have asked

  2234. us to do

  2235. by your

  2236. spirit

  2237. you will

  2238. help us

  2239. to do

  2240. that

  2241. lord

  2242. we love

  2243. you

  2244. help us

  2245. to love

  2246. you more

  2247. we pray

  2248. all of

  2249. these things

  2250. in christ's

  2251. name

  2252. amen
