  1. When our diocesan bishop, Bishop Dan Gifford, was consecrated as bishop about two years ago now,

  2. don't hold me to that, two years, one and a half years, two and a half years, around two years

  3. ago, he made vows. And among those vows, the archbishop who was consecrating our bishop

  4. asked a number of questions. But this question he asked Bishop Dan,

  5. be you ready with all faithful diligence to banish and drive away all erroneous and strange doctrine

  6. contrary to God's word, and both privately and openly to call upon and encourage others to do

  7. the same. And Bishop Dan answered, I am ready, the Lord being my helper. And how would Bishop Dan do

  8. that? The answer is found actually in a question that was asked to him two questions before. And

  9. the question the archbishop asked Bishop Dan was this, are you persuaded that the holy scriptures

  10. contain sufficiently all doctrine required of necessity for eternal salvation through faith

  11. in Jesus Christ? And are you determined out of the same holy scriptures to instruct the people

  12. committed to your charge and to teach or maintain nothing as required of necessity to eternal salvation,

  13. but that which you shall be persuaded may be concluded and proved by the same?

  14. Bishop Dan answers, I am so persuaded and determined by God's grace.

  15. We continue in Jude, the second week. And if you remember two weeks ago, we looked at verses one to four,

  16. where Jude, he wrote a letter to a church imploring the church to contend for the faith because

  17. of false teachers that had crept into the church with all sorts of erroneous and strange doctrine.

  18. False teachers. And how this contending of the faith was for a faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

  19. And how would we contend for the faith as Jude asked us to? It was to stick to God's word.

  20. God's unchanging Bible that begins in Genesis, and I mean the entirety of the New Testament wouldn't be written by this time,

  21. but it had in view the entirety of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation,

  22. to cling to the truth that is given within these pages.

  23. The church, Jude said, is always going to need to contend for the gospel

  24. because the church will always find itself full of false teachers.

  25. We saw that in verse four of Jude, where Jude said,

  26. for long ago, or sorry, back to the beginning of verse four,

  27. for certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation.

  28. That is to say, there's always been a mixed bag in the church amongst God's people,

  29. and they need to be opposed.

  30. Jude tells us that

  31. that we need to contend for the faith.

  32. And how do we contend for the faith?

  33. How do we push back against the faith?

  34. Well, we look back to the Scriptures,

  35. and he tells us to remember,

  36. and he reminds us of

  37. three specific examples in our text today,

  38. but there will be nine total that he reminds the listeners of in this short letter.

  39. Instances in the Old Testament where false teachers,

  40. erroneous and strange doctrine, have made their way into the church.

  41. We're going to be looking at verses five to seven,

  42. and I'll confess to you that

  43. verses five and six seem to be pretty straightforward.

  44. I mean, verse seven seems to be very straightforward as well,

  45. but verse seven, it'll touch on something that is a highly sensitive issue

  46. within our culture here in Canada, in Ottawa, amongst us,

  47. friends, family,

  48. and it is the topic of same-sex relations.

  49. So, as we go through this,

  50. pray that the Lord would guide me,

  51. but also give yourselves ears to hear what the Lord would have to speak to you

  52. on this about this morning.

  53. But the three examples, going back to these three examples

  54. that Jude wants to draw our attention to,

  55. examples of false teachers within the church,

  56. verse five, he gives the example of the Israelites

  57. that died in the wilderness after the Exodus because of unbelief.

  58. The second is the example of the fallen angels of Genesis six,

  59. but also in Isaiah and Ezekiel,

  60. who rejected God's authority.

  61. And then finally, the people of Sodom and Gomorrah

  62. and the three other cities, the people of the plain

  63. from the early chapters of Genesis

  64. who deny God's good design for creation.

  65. So, Jude here is saying,

  66. listen, there's false teachers in your midst

  67. and this is nothing new.

  68. Remember how God has dealt with this in the past,

  69. how these false teachers of the past

  70. or these false teachers of the present

  71. are bringing nothing new

  72. because we've seen it all in the past.

  73. Unbelief, rejection of God's authority

  74. and a denial of God's good design for creation.

  75. And like I mentioned,

  76. these warnings tell us that God

  77. is a God of judgment

  78. and that this doesn't, in a sense,

  79. vibe well with our live and let live culture,

  80. this YOLO, you do you,

  81. even going back a few decades,

  82. you know,

  83. you know,

  84. stay out of the business of the bedroom.

  85. They are very controversial things to talk about,

  86. God's judgment.

  87. But what they do do

  88. is communicate to us

  89. the goodness of God's will

  90. for our people,

  91. for the entire world

  92. and how God is the source of all life and light

  93. and how he is completely against evil.

  94. And he is completely for us.

  95. And friends, this is good news.

  96. So, remember that the point of Jude's letter

  97. is for us to contend for the faith,

  98. but to also to be so,

  99. in a sense,

  100. taken by the goodness

  101. and love and grace of Jesus

  102. that we would have no other desire

  103. but to contend for the faith

  104. because it is such a beautiful

  105. and precious thing.

  106. So let's jump right into it,

  107. verse 5,

  108. and we'll see how this example

  109. from where the Israelites

  110. died in the wilderness

  111. helps us to understand

  112. a bit of the nature

  113. of these false teachers.

  114. Look at verse 5 with me.

  115. Now I want to remind you,

  116. although you once fully knew it,

  117. that Jesus who saved the people

  118. out of the land of Egypt

  119. afterward destroyed

  120. those who did not believe.

  121. So the first of these warnings

  122. is about the Israelites,

  123. God's chosen people,

  124. those Israelites who God rescued

  125. from Egyptian slavery,

  126. an Egyptian slavery that was

  127. centuries long,

  128. that was incredibly oppressive.

  129. The Exodus,

  130. as it is called,

  131. is really the prototype

  132. of salvation.

  133. It's all throughout the Bible,

  134. and it is a picture of God

  135. unilaterally taking a people

  136. out of slavery,

  137. defeating their enemies,

  138. making them into a nation

  139. called after God's own name,

  140. and settled in a land

  141. flowing with milk and honey,

  142. a land of bounty,

  143. of eternal joy.

  144. He sends his messenger Moses,

  145. and with a strong hand

  146. and an outstretched arm,

  147. he destroys Egypt.

  148. It's a wonderful story,

  149. an incredible story,

  150. of God saving his people.

  151. But,

  152. and this is a very big but,

  153. not all the people of Israel

  154. who were brought out of Egypt

  155. saw the fullness of God's salvation.

  156. Look at the second part of verse 5.

  157. It says this,

  158. afterward,

  159. the people of Israel

  160. were destroyed by Jesus

  161. because they did not believe.

  162. These people

  163. who were brought out of Egypt,

  164. who saw miracles upon miracles,

  165. saved by God

  166. in no uncertain terms,

  167. would spend time in the desert,

  168. and their faith began to wane.

  169. They were impatient with Moses at Sinai.

  170. They rejected God's good law

  171. because they were tired of,

  172. oh, sorry,

  173. they rejected God's good law

  174. for they did not want to submit,

  175. so instead they create

  176. a golden calf to worship.

  177. They grumbled against God

  178. because they were tired

  179. of heavenly food

  180. in the desert.

  181. And then finally,

  182. they feared the inhabitants

  183. of the promised land

  184. even though God promised

  185. to give them victory.

  186. Interestingly,

  187. in morning prayer,

  188. we pray Psalm 95 often.

  189. Actually,

  190. every time we pray morning prayer,

  191. and it's this prayer

  192. that helps us

  193. to not be stiff-necked

  194. like the Israelites

  195. who tested God

  196. and didn't believe in God

  197. and put God to the test

  198. when God is not to be tested.

  199. God calls this generation stiff-necked.

  200. He calls them hard-hearted.

  201. He calls them those

  202. that have gone astray,

  203. people marked with unbelief.

  204. The entire generation

  205. was left to die in the desert.

  206. This multitude of people

  207. rescued out of Egypt

  208. and only a remnant

  209. gets to go into the promised land.

  210. Not even Moses himself,

  211. God's messenger,

  212. enjoyed the land of milk and honey.

  213. Unbelief described here,

  214. it has to be said,

  215. is different than struggling

  216. with a doctrine

  217. or having a season of doubt.

  218. The unbelief that we see

  219. in the story of the Israelites

  220. is rooted in a refusal

  221. to make God Lord and Master.

  222. It is a refusal

  223. to believe in and act upon

  224. the promises of God

  225. given for the benefit

  226. and flourishing of his people.

  227. It's to say, in a sense,

  228. to hell with you God.

  229. God, we have the corner

  230. on what is good

  231. and true and beautiful.

  232. Our vision of the good life

  233. is better.

  234. A golden calf is better

  235. than a God who gives a law.

  236. It is a rejection of God,

  237. ultimately calling God a liar.

  238. Now, if you know the story,

  239. you'll remember

  240. that this doesn't just happen

  241. in one instance,

  242. but it's a slow progression

  243. of unbelief,

  244. of rejection of God,

  245. of calling him a liar.

  246. In the same way

  247. that we see

  248. that the false teachers

  249. have slowly crept

  250. into the church,

  251. verse 3,

  252. it says,

  253. unnoticed.

  254. Friends,

  255. this is a stark,

  256. stark warning

  257. for the church.

  258. It's a stark warning

  259. because

  260. unbelief

  261. is hard to spot.

  262. We want to say,

  263. and this is very true.

  264. This is a rock-solid faith

  265. that can handle

  266. your toughest questions

  267. and struggles.

  268. Ask hard questions.

  269. It's a very good thing.

  270. But unbelief

  271. can creep in

  272. to the church

  273. in ways that seem,

  274. in a sense,

  275. very authentic.

  276. I am just,

  277. I struggle with this aspect

  278. of this doctrine of God.

  279. I don't like it.

  280. But there's no real wrestling.

  281. There's no real desire

  282. to submit

  283. a knee,

  284. bend a knee

  285. to submit to God

  286. and this unbelief grows

  287. and it grows

  288. and it grows

  289. and it grows

  290. until

  291. it is

  292. a glaring,

  293. glaring issue.

  294. And you ask,

  295. how did this happen?

  296. But it's also

  297. a stark warning

  298. to the church

  299. because for us,

  300. it tells us

  301. that it's not enough

  302. to play the part

  303. of the Christian.

  304. It is not enough

  305. to pretend

  306. but we need to be people

  307. that believe in

  308. and act upon

  309. the promises of God.

  310. The call is for God's people

  311. always

  312. to act

  313. in an authentic way

  314. towards Him.

  315. To be real

  316. about our faith.

  317. To try

  318. to confess

  319. that we struggle

  320. and we

  321. fail

  322. a hundred times.

  323. Lord,

  324. please give me

  325. forgiveness.

  326. Give me the grace.

  327. to try

  328. the one hundred

  329. and one

  330. a hundred

  331. and one

  332. a hundred

  333. and first

  334. a hundred

  335. and tenth

  336. time.

  337. I messed that up.

  338. But you see the point

  339. that we need

  340. to be authentic

  341. with God.

  342. Notice that I didn't

  343. say perfect.

  344. Notice that perfection

  345. is not anywhere

  346. at all

  347. within this

  348. call to

  349. authenticity

  350. in faith.

  351. faith.

  352. No,

  353. but authenticity

  354. is what

  355. he desires.

  356. To be

  357. who we are

  358. called to be

  359. by God's strength.

  360. To look to Him

  361. when we fail.

  362. To continue to try.

  363. To continue to bend

  364. a knee

  365. to Christ.

  366. In a sense,

  367. this faith

  368. is the anti-virtue

  369. signaling faith.

  370. It is not

  371. the faith

  372. that

  373. it is

  374. the type

  375. of faith

  376. that pretends

  377. to be

  378. virtuous

  379. and

  380. to

  381. put on

  382. a face

  383. and to be

  384. well put together

  385. but an empty

  386. vacuous faith

  387. is a faith

  388. that God

  389. rejects

  390. completely.

  391. It is a

  392. stark warning

  393. that we

  394. will not be

  395. a people

  396. of unbelief.

  397. We have to

  398. remember that

  399. the faith

  400. that embraces

  401. God's grace

  402. and salvation

  403. is the same

  404. faith that

  405. seeks to

  406. obey Christ

  407. in this

  408. Christian life.

  409. They are

  410. inseparable.

  411. And that

  412. does not

  413. mean that

  414. somehow

  415. we need to

  416. do good works

  417. to be saved.

  418. No,

  419. if we are

  420. saved,

  421. it stands

  422. in a sense

  423. that we will

  424. then seek

  425. to obey.

  426. The sign

  427. of true

  428. faith is

  429. an obedient

  430. one.

  431. The letter

  432. of James

  433. in a sense

  434. touches on

  435. that a

  436. number of

  437. times.

  438. Where there

  439. is saving

  440. faith,

  441. there is

  442. obedient

  443. faith.

  444. So Jude

  445. is warning

  446. the church

  447. that God's

  448. covenant

  449. community,

  450. just like

  451. the Israelites

  452. who are God's

  453. very precious

  454. people,

  455. their fate

  456. would be the

  457. same if

  458. unbelief takes

  459. root in their

  460. church,

  461. in their

  462. lives.

  463. And the

  464. people of

  465. Israel were

  466. destroyed in

  467. the desert.

  468. It is a

  469. very sobering

  470. call and

  471. it speaks to

  472. the reality

  473. that apostasy

  474. is real

  475. within the

  476. church,

  477. amongst

  478. God's

  479. people.

  480. Jude is

  481. calling us

  482. to work out

  483. our salvation

  484. with fear and

  485. trembling and

  486. holding up in a

  487. sense a mirror

  488. to us that we

  489. may see the

  490. ways in which

  491. unbelief are

  492. destroying,

  493. is destroying

  494. our faith.

  495. Not to

  496. shame us

  497. so that we

  498. can wallow

  499. in our,

  500. in a sense,

  501. shame and

  502. despondency,

  503. but rather that

  504. we would turn

  505. from our

  506. wickedness and

  507. live to cast

  508. our entire

  509. life upon the

  510. mercy of

  511. Christ,

  512. that we may

  513. repent and

  514. believe afresh

  515. in God's most

  516. holy gospel,

  517. that good news

  518. that God's

  519. salvation is the

  520. only salvation,

  521. and that his

  522. promises are the

  523. only true

  524. promises,

  525. and that his

  526. blessing is the

  527. only true

  528. blessing that our

  529. hearts ache for.

  530. Jude is warning

  531. the church because

  532. the church is

  533. always a mixed

  534. bag.

  535. It is always

  536. tares and

  537. wheat together.

  538. It is always

  539. sheep and

  540. goats together.

  541. other.

  542. It is always

  543. people, in a

  544. sense, that

  545. will worship

  546. on a Sunday,

  547. but some will

  548. see glory and

  549. others'

  550. damnation.

  551. It is very

  552. sobering.

  553. By the way,

  554. only God

  555. knows who

  556. are truly

  557. his.

  558. And that's

  559. not to say

  560. that we can't

  561. have assurance

  562. of salvation.

  563. I think

  564. assurance of

  565. salvation is a

  566. very important,

  567. critical,

  568. real promise

  569. that we can

  570. embrace.

  571. And I think

  572. if that bothers

  573. you as a

  574. Christian,

  575. that am I

  576. truly saved,

  577. and it is

  578. annoying at

  579. your heart,

  580. that might be

  581. because the

  582. Lord is actually

  583. in your heart,

  584. at work,

  585. in you,

  586. drawing you

  587. continually to

  588. himself.

  589. But it is a

  590. problem when

  591. there's an

  592. apathy that

  593. lives deep

  594. within you.

  595. You know,

  596. it is a

  597. lot easier

  598. to preach

  599. a sermon

  600. that is like

  601. a feel-good

  602. sermon,

  603. or like God

  604. is going to

  605. heal you,

  606. or God

  607. is going to

  608. help you,

  609. in a sense,

  610. with an

  611. emotional

  612. breakthrough,

  613. or he can,

  614. in a sense,

  615. be a comfort

  616. to you in a

  617. weak time.

  618. You can nail

  619. a sermon that

  620. preaches real

  621. well.

  622. Talking about

  623. judgment is

  624. harder,

  625. but let me

  626. just say

  627. this,

  628. there is

  629. fantastic joy

  630. in godly

  631. sorrow.

  632. Godly sorrow

  633. is a gift

  634. from God

  635. that will

  636. lead you

  637. to green

  638. pastures,

  639. into

  640. beautiful,

  641. eternal

  642. relationship

  643. with God

  644. forever,

  645. to deep

  646. assurance of

  647. salvation,

  648. because you

  649. realize that

  650. you have

  651. nothing in

  652. yourself to

  653. save you

  654. from the

  655. reality of

  656. your darkness,

  657. and your

  658. brokenness,

  659. and your

  660. bentness,

  661. and the

  662. evil that

  663. resides within

  664. you,

  665. but only God

  666. extends his

  667. hand to you,

  668. and only by

  669. his grace can

  670. lift you up.

  671. And that

  672. begins, in a

  673. sense, with

  674. knowing our

  675. sins.

  676. That's why we

  677. go through the

  678. Ten Commandments

  679. during the

  680. Lenten season.

  681. That's why we

  682. don't skip over

  683. parts of the

  684. Bible that speak

  685. of judgment.

  686. Godly sorrow

  687. is a beautiful

  688. and joyful

  689. thing, because

  690. it leads us

  691. to Christ.

  692. Unbelief is a

  693. problem in the

  694. church, and it

  695. will result in a

  696. rejection of the

  697. authority and

  698. lordship of

  699. Christ.

  700. In this next

  701. example, in

  702. verse 6, we'll

  703. see just that.

  704. Jude is going

  705. to turn our

  706. attention now to

  707. the fallen

  708. angels.

  709. Let's read

  710. verse 6.

  711. And the

  712. angels who

  713. did not stay

  714. within their

  715. own position of

  716. authority, but

  717. left their

  718. proper dwelling,

  719. he has kept in

  720. eternal chains

  721. under gloomy

  722. darkness until

  723. the judgment of

  724. the great day.

  725. What we see in

  726. this verse, in

  727. a sense, is how

  728. angels became

  729. demons and

  730. would ultimately

  731. include Satan

  732. himself.

  733. But before we

  734. get into it,

  735. just a brief

  736. note.

  737. On Sunday, it's

  738. easy to talk

  739. about supernatural

  740. things.

  741. Monday through

  742. Saturday, if I'm

  743. connecting with

  744. an unbeliever or

  745. say a friend that

  746. doesn't believe in

  747. anything, and they

  748. were to press me,

  749. do you believe in

  750. angels and demons

  751. and supernatural

  752. things?

  753. I would say

  754. yes, but I

  755. would be a bit

  756. embarrassed, because

  757. I live, in a

  758. sense, in the

  759. material world.

  760. What I see, what

  761. I hear, what I

  762. smell, what I

  763. touch, what I

  764. can taste, what

  765. can be proved, in

  766. a sense, by

  767. science, and what

  768. seems rational, that

  769. is what I like to

  770. believe in.

  771. And if you're

  772. anything like me,

  773. you can relate, that

  774. the idea of

  775. talking about

  776. angels and

  777. demons seems in

  778. the realm of

  779. fantasy and myth,

  780. potentially.

  781. But I want to

  782. just, if you

  783. bear with me, to

  784. just talk about

  785. this for a minute.

  786. Our faith is a

  787. faith that hinges

  788. on an unseen

  789. God, who created

  790. everything that has

  791. been created.

  792. Our faith is one

  793. that hinges on

  794. God taking on

  795. human flesh, yet

  796. remaining fully

  797. God and living

  798. with us, amongst

  799. us, dying for us,

  800. and rising from an

  801. actual grave because

  802. he was actually

  803. dead.

  804. In short, our

  805. faith hinges on

  806. the supernatural,

  807. things that we

  808. can't, in a sense,

  809. prove empirically.

  810. The Bible is not

  811. meant to be proved

  812. empirically.

  813. We don't apply the

  814. scientific method to

  815. the Bible.

  816. And in a sense, in a

  817. time and culture

  818. where materialism and

  819. a hyper-rationalism and

  820. a modernity that

  821. kind of, that leads

  822. the charge and that

  823. is, in a sense, the

  824. zeitgeist, it is

  825. hard to then say

  826. that there is a

  827. spiritual, a

  828. supernatural world,

  829. but our faith hinges

  830. on it.

  831. There is no going

  832. about it another

  833. way.

  834. But consider that

  835. we as a culture, a

  836. very modern,

  837. rational culture,

  838. we love a good

  839. story.

  840. We love a good

  841. story.

  842. And often the

  843. stories that we

  844. love are fantasy.

  845. They are science

  846. fiction.

  847. They talk about

  848. magic.

  849. They talk about

  850. dragons and other

  851. worlds and

  852. supernatural powers.

  853. And it's as if

  854. we, who spend

  855. billions of

  856. dollars consuming

  857. this kind of

  858. media, it's as if

  859. we want to

  860. believe it,

  861. but we just

  862. can't.

  863. love.

  864. So instead, we

  865. fill our minds

  866. so full of

  867. fantasy and

  868. science fiction

  869. and space

  870. and in all

  871. sorts of

  872. superheroes and

  873. all of that

  874. because in a

  875. sense, we are

  876. a people who

  877. live in a

  878. disenchanted age

  879. that cannot

  880. somehow shake a

  881. longing for

  882. enchantment.

  883. I would put

  884. forward to you

  885. that speaks to

  886. our collective

  887. knowledge that

  888. there must be

  889. something more

  890. than we can

  891. encounter with

  892. just our

  893. senses.

  894. There has to be

  895. something more

  896. than just the

  897. here and the

  898. now.

  899. There has to be

  900. something supernatural.

  901. Something to

  902. ponder.

  903. Why don't we

  904. continue in our

  905. text back to

  906. verse 6.

  907. So Jude shares

  908. with the church

  909. this other

  910. example of

  911. how God is

  912. rejected, how

  913. false teaching

  914. ultimately is this

  915. rejection of the

  916. authority of God.

  917. But in this

  918. case, it's with

  919. angels who

  920. possessed God

  921. given positions

  922. of authority but

  923. were not satisfied

  924. and rebelled.

  925. We're unsure in

  926. a sense.

  927. The commentators

  928. are unsure of

  929. what specifically

  930. Jude is getting

  931. at.

  932. Is it this

  933. bizarre story from

  934. Genesis 6 of

  935. these creatures

  936. not sure what

  937. they are that

  938. come and have

  939. relations with

  940. human women?

  941. The Bible is

  942. kind of crazy

  943. in a sense.

  944. Crazy not like

  945. crazy just

  946. maybe intense

  947. sometimes.

  948. Or is it

  949. this

  950. story of

  951. these fallen

  952. angels that we

  953. see in Isaiah

  954. and Ezekiel?

  955. Or is it

  956. from these

  957. extra

  958. biblical books

  959. non-canonical

  960. books?

  961. They're called

  962. Sirach and

  963. Jubilees that

  964. speak to this

  965. heavenly fall.

  966. Jude doesn't

  967. specify.

  968. But whatever

  969. specifically he

  970. had in mind,

  971. all such

  972. examples seem

  973. to point to

  974. the same

  975. reality.

  976. And that

  977. reality is

  978. that there

  979. are angelic

  980. beings that

  981. they are put

  982. in authority

  983. by God,

  984. whatever that

  985. authority may

  986. be, and

  987. they rejected

  988. God's

  989. authority and

  990. the authority

  991. that God

  992. had given

  993. them,

  994. rebelling

  995. against God

  996. and now

  997. await final

  998. judgment.

  999. There's an

  1000. interesting

  1001. wordplay that

  1002. Jude uses,

  1003. and we don't

  1004. see it in our

  1005. translation in

  1006. the English

  1007. Standard Version,

  1008. but in

  1009. verse 6 it

  1010. says,

  1011. and the angels

  1012. who do not

  1013. stay within

  1014. their own

  1015. positions,

  1016. in other

  1017. translations it's

  1018. this word

  1019. kept,

  1020. they did

  1021. not keep

  1022. within their

  1023. own positions

  1024. of authority,

  1025. and here's

  1026. the wordplay,

  1027. but left

  1028. their proper

  1029. dwelling,

  1030. God has

  1031. kept them

  1032. in eternal

  1033. chains under

  1034. gloomy darkness

  1035. until the

  1036. judgment of

  1037. the great

  1038. day.

  1039. This idea

  1040. that they

  1041. would not

  1042. stay where

  1043. God put

  1044. them,

  1045. so God

  1046. is going

  1047. to make

  1048. them stay

  1049. until they

  1050. await a

  1051. final judgment.

  1052. And it

  1053. is as if

  1054. God is

  1055. saying to

  1056. us that

  1057. those that

  1058. teach false

  1059. doctrine,

  1060. those that

  1061. reject God's

  1062. authority,

  1063. they will

  1064. suffer

  1065. judgment,

  1066. that they

  1067. will not

  1068. escape the

  1069. wrath of

  1070. God,

  1071. that although

  1072. in a sense

  1073. it is

  1074. delayed,

  1075. it is not

  1076. absent.

  1077. God's

  1078. judgment is

  1079. real,

  1080. and it is

  1081. hard to,

  1082. in a sense,

  1083. talk about

  1084. the God

  1085. of love

  1086. and then

  1087. talk about

  1088. the God

  1089. of judgment

  1090. and talk

  1091. about his

  1092. wrath,

  1093. but God's

  1094. love is

  1095. meaningless

  1096. if God

  1097. is not a

  1098. God of

  1099. justice and

  1100. judgment and

  1101. wrath,

  1102. that God's

  1103. love is all

  1104. the more

  1105. beautiful and

  1106. grand and

  1107. greater than

  1108. we could ever

  1109. understand if

  1110. we only know

  1111. that God

  1112. hates evil

  1113. and hates

  1114. injustice

  1115. and will

  1116. not stand

  1117. by when

  1118. people are

  1119. abused and

  1120. neglected and

  1121. sold into

  1122. slavery and

  1123. destroyed and

  1124. killed and

  1125. lied to and

  1126. the list goes

  1127. on and on,

  1128. that God's

  1129. mercy is,

  1130. sorry,

  1131. God's love is

  1132. deeply connected

  1133. to his

  1134. judgment.

  1135. So in the

  1136. case of the

  1137. angels,

  1138. in the case

  1139. of the false

  1140. teachers,

  1141. God hates

  1142. what they are

  1143. doing and

  1144. he will judge

  1145. them because

  1146. ultimately God

  1147. has put in

  1148. place all

  1149. of what we

  1150. see,

  1151. he has called

  1152. it good and

  1153. even though it

  1154. is bent and

  1155. broken in a

  1156. sense now,

  1157. God's creation

  1158. is good and

  1159. anything that

  1160. destroys that or

  1161. sullies that or

  1162. pollutes that,

  1163. God does not

  1164. care for.

  1165. His judgment

  1166. in a sense

  1167. is a sign

  1168. that he is

  1169. a loving God.

  1170. It is,

  1171. in a sense,

  1172. for us a

  1173. comfort that

  1174. people that

  1175. try to take

  1176. advantage of

  1177. their

  1178. congregations,

  1179. these false

  1180. teachers,

  1181. that what is

  1182. whispered in the

  1183. darkness,

  1184. will be shouted

  1185. from the

  1186. rooftops.

  1187. They will not

  1188. get away with

  1189. it.

  1190. There are

  1191. false teachers

  1192. in the church

  1193. today.

  1194. Oftentimes,

  1195. oftentimes they

  1196. are prosperity

  1197. preachers,

  1198. those that

  1199. promise breakthrough,

  1200. divine healing.

  1201. Only if you

  1202. sow a seed

  1203. right now

  1204. are

  1205. our

  1206. telephones are

  1207. being

  1208. answered and

  1209. you can give

  1210. us your credit

  1211. cards.

  1212. and then the

  1213. blessing will

  1214. come.

  1215. These are

  1216. false teachers.

  1217. They are

  1218. rejecting the

  1219. authority of

  1220. God to

  1221. build up,

  1222. in a sense,

  1223. their own

  1224. kingdom.

  1225. Woe to

  1226. those people.

  1227. I mean,

  1228. we'll see it

  1229. later on in

  1230. verses 8-12.

  1231. Woe to

  1232. those people.

  1233. It's a very

  1234. scary thing.

  1235. But also,

  1236. it can happen

  1237. in Bible-believing

  1238. churches as well.

  1239. the rejection

  1240. of God's

  1241. authority

  1242. for their

  1243. own.

  1244. Yet,

  1245. we are

  1246. confronted again

  1247. with an

  1248. uncomfortable

  1249. warning.

  1250. We,

  1251. likewise,

  1252. need to be

  1253. aware that

  1254. we may

  1255. very well

  1256. reject the

  1257. authority of

  1258. God.

  1259. Have we

  1260. looked at

  1261. God's

  1262. gospel like a

  1263. straitjacket

  1264. restricting our

  1265. very agency,

  1266. our ability

  1267. to spread

  1268. our wings,

  1269. rather than

  1270. seeing it as

  1271. a wondrous

  1272. wedding gown

  1273. that he wishes

  1274. to adorn us

  1275. with?

  1276. Have we

  1277. been embarrassed

  1278. in such a

  1279. way as to

  1280. deny aspects

  1281. of God's

  1282. character,

  1283. of God's

  1284. word,

  1285. or the things

  1286. that God

  1287. has called

  1288. us to

  1289. stand for,

  1290. because they

  1291. are prickly?

  1292. But,

  1293. to be perfectly

  1294. honest,

  1295. authority is a

  1296. bit of a

  1297. prickly word,

  1298. because

  1299. oftentimes,

  1300. when authority

  1301. is abused or

  1302. ill-gotten,

  1303. authority is a

  1304. disgusting,

  1305. horrible thing.

  1306. But godly

  1307. authority,

  1308. God's authority

  1309. is not prickly,

  1310. but it is

  1311. life-giving.

  1312. It is life

  1313. rightly

  1314. ordered.

  1315. It is

  1316. perfection.

  1317. And to live

  1318. by God's

  1319. authority is

  1320. not to be

  1321. straitjacketed,

  1322. but is to

  1323. be adorned

  1324. as you

  1325. are made

  1326. to be

  1327. adorned

  1328. as the

  1329. bride of

  1330. Christ.

  1331. It is to

  1332. live,

  1333. in a sense,

  1334. in the

  1335. fullness of

  1336. what it

  1337. means to

  1338. be a

  1339. human being.

  1340. Unbelief,

  1341. rejection of

  1342. God's

  1343. authority.

  1344. Finally,

  1345. in verse

  1346. seven,

  1347. we see a

  1348. denial of

  1349. God's good

  1350. design for

  1351. creation.

  1352. Let's read

  1353. verse seven.

  1354. Just as

  1355. Sodom and

  1356. Gomorrah

  1357. and the

  1358. surrounding

  1359. cities,

  1360. which likewise

  1361. indulged in

  1362. sexual immorality

  1363. and pursued

  1364. unnatural

  1365. desire,

  1366. serve as

  1367. an example

  1368. by undergoing

  1369. a punishment

  1370. of eternal

  1371. fire.

  1372. So we

  1373. finally get to

  1374. the third

  1375. and final

  1376. warning of

  1377. this triplet,

  1378. this example

  1379. of Sodom and

  1380. Gomorrah and

  1381. the three other

  1382. surrounding cities,

  1383. the cities of

  1384. the plain.

  1385. I'll just say

  1386. Sodom and

  1387. Gomorrah or

  1388. just Sodom,

  1389. but it's a

  1390. catch-all for

  1391. all five cities

  1392. from Genesis

  1393. 18 and

  1394. 19.

  1395. Jude's warning

  1396. is that they

  1397. likewise

  1398. indulged in

  1399. sexual immorality

  1400. and pursued

  1401. unnatural

  1402. desire.

  1403. It would

  1404. seem,

  1405. if we go

  1406. back to

  1407. verse four,

  1408. that these

  1409. false teachers

  1410. also pervert

  1411. the grace of

  1412. our God

  1413. into sensuality.

  1414. The same

  1415. idea of

  1416. illicit sexual

  1417. knowing and

  1418. desires.

  1419. Jude's warning

  1420. is that they

  1421. likewise indulged

  1422. in sexual

  1423. immorality and

  1424. pursued unnatural

  1425. desire.

  1426. They engaged

  1427. in homosexual

  1428. sex and

  1429. were unrepentant

  1430. and ignored

  1431. warnings and

  1432. therefore suffered.

  1433. This is the

  1434. story of Sodom

  1435. and Gomorrah.

  1436. There's no way

  1437. in a sense to

  1438. take the edge

  1439. off this verse,

  1440. to take the

  1441. edge off of

  1442. Genesis 18 and

  1443. 19 unless we

  1444. are willing to

  1445. bend and break

  1446. God's word and

  1447. therefore fall

  1448. into some kind

  1449. of rejection of

  1450. God's authority

  1451. and unbelief.

  1452. Interesting how

  1453. these things are

  1454. connected.

  1455. Unbelief,

  1456. rejection of

  1457. God's authority,

  1458. the denial of

  1459. God's good design

  1460. for creation,

  1461. a bending and

  1462. breaking of

  1463. God's word.

  1464. But if we were

  1465. to find an out

  1466. for the harshness

  1467. and edge of this

  1468. verse, it would

  1469. go something like

  1470. this, and this

  1471. is something

  1472. that's alive and

  1473. well in the

  1474. church today.

  1475. It would say

  1476. something like

  1477. this, both

  1478. Genesis and

  1479. Ezekiel, that's

  1480. the other place

  1481. where it kind of

  1482. goes into a bit

  1483. of the sin list

  1484. of what Sodom

  1485. and Gomorrah

  1486. and the surrounding

  1487. cities did.

  1488. So both Genesis

  1489. and Ezekiel speak

  1490. of the fertile

  1491. land which

  1492. produced incredible

  1493. blessing for

  1494. Sodom and the

  1495. surrounding cities.

  1496. These people

  1497. that lived in

  1498. the plain enjoyed

  1499. fertile land and

  1500. excess food and

  1501. prosperous ease,

  1502. but did not see

  1503. this as a blessing

  1504. from God and a

  1505. blessing to extend

  1506. to others, but

  1507. were prideful and

  1508. arrogant and

  1509. committed, as

  1510. Ezekiel says,

  1511. abominations and

  1512. disgraceful acts.

  1513. So what were

  1514. those abominations

  1515. and disgraceful acts?

  1516. Not being

  1517. hospitable to the

  1518. needy and

  1519. neglecting social

  1520. justice.

  1521. That is, in a

  1522. sense, the

  1523. apologetic against

  1524. seeing Sodom and

  1525. Gomorrah as

  1526. evil because of

  1527. sexual, homosexual

  1528. sin.

  1529. Although the

  1530. neglect of

  1531. hospitality and

  1532. social justice

  1533. certainly was

  1534. alive and well

  1535. in Sodom and

  1536. Gomorrah in the

  1537. narrative in

  1538. Genesis 18 and

  1539. 19,

  1540. words like

  1541. abominations and

  1542. disgraceful acts

  1543. and vile

  1544. wickedness are

  1545. not words used

  1546. in Scripture to

  1547. describe a

  1548. breach in

  1549. hospitality.

  1550. They are used

  1551. to describe sex

  1552. acts that are

  1553. contrary to God's

  1554. good and

  1555. beautiful design

  1556. for sexuality,

  1557. which is a

  1558. monogamous,

  1559. lifelong union

  1560. before God and

  1561. man between one

  1562. man and one

  1563. woman that has

  1564. in mind the

  1565. procreation of

  1566. children.

  1567. The sin of

  1568. Sodom was a

  1569. denial of God's

  1570. good and perfect

  1571. design for life

  1572. because it did

  1573. not look to

  1574. achieve that

  1575. design for

  1576. marriage but

  1577. looked to do

  1578. something contrary

  1579. to that.

  1580. But even more,

  1581. it's a denial that

  1582. God himself is a

  1583. good creator,

  1584. that his will is

  1585. always and forever

  1586. towards goodness

  1587. and towards truth

  1588. and towards beauty

  1589. and towards life

  1590. and a love that

  1591. is forever expanding

  1592. and looking to

  1593. bless and to

  1594. show kindness

  1595. and mercy.

  1596. For that is God's

  1597. good design for the

  1598. marital union.

  1599. And the marital

  1600. union between one

  1601. man and one

  1602. woman as a

  1603. lifelong union,

  1604. that's what it

  1605. points to ultimately.

  1606. It reflects God's

  1607. character.

  1608. It reflects God's

  1609. very heart to

  1610. expand and to

  1611. bless and to

  1612. extend love and

  1613. to see growth and

  1614. fruitfulness.

  1615. Anything that does

  1616. not lead to

  1617. goodness, truth,

  1618. and beauty on

  1619. God's terms is

  1620. destructive and

  1621. harmful.

  1622. So friends, we

  1623. need to be careful,

  1624. careful not to see

  1625. things as morally

  1626. neutral that God

  1627. calls sinful.

  1628. Remember that this

  1629. is a warning for

  1630. the church and it

  1631. is good news for

  1632. us.

1633. It is a warning for

  1634. the church to

  1635. notice, in a sense,

  1636. telltale signs of

  1637. evil from the past

  1638. that have crept into

  1639. the church.

  1640. So like the people

  1641. of Sodom, the

  1642. teachers would not

  1643. keep or hold fast

  1644. to the gospel truth

  1645. but instead pervert

  1646. the grace of God

  1647. to give license to

  1648. their own sensuality,

  1649. their illicit forms

  1650. of pursuing

  1651. relations that do

  1652. not honor God,

  1653. that do not reflect

  1654. God's character.

1655. That is to say that

  1656. they use the grace

  1657. of God, that

  1658. beautiful promise

  1659. that those who are

  1660. in Christ have

  1661. their sins forever

  1662. taken away,

  1663. removed, to give

  1664. license to their

  1665. embrace of illicit

  1666. sexual acts,

  1667. contrary to God's

  1668. beautiful design

  1669. for life.

  1670. They reject the

  1671. grace of God

  1672. and his goodness

  1673. as creator and

  1674. sustainer of all

  1675. things.

  1676. Not a popular

  1677. thing to say

  1678. but friends,

  1679. this is the truth

  1680. of God's word.

  1681. Three things

  1682. before we move on

  1683. and these are very

  1684. important things

  1685. and they're all

  1686. found in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 6:9–11

  1687. chapter 6

  1688. verses 9 to 11.

  1689. I'll read these

  1690. three verses from

  1691. 1 Corinthians 6.

  1692. Verse 11.

  1693. Verse 11.

  1694. And such were some

  1695. of you, but you

  1696. were washed and you

  1697. were sanctified, you

  1698. were justified in the

  1699. name of the Lord

  1700. Jesus Christ and by

  1701. the Spirit of our

  1702. God.

  1703. First thing of the

  1704. three.

  1705. All sins are acts

  1706. of unrighteousness

  1707. and disqualify us

  1708. from eternal life.

  1709. Drunkards, swindlers,

  1710. revilers, the greedy.

1711. I might have hit on

1712. 90% of us in some

  1713. kind of way.

  1714. Idolaters, there's

  1715. 100%.

  1716. All acts of sin

  1717. are unrighteous

  1718. and disqualify us

  1719. from eternal life.

  1720. And that's not to

  1721. say that all sins,

  1722. in a sense,

  1723. they are as

  1724. destructive,

  1725. but that all sins

  1726. are an affront

  1727. to God's

  1728. perfection and

  1729. holiness and

  1730. goodness and

  1731. righteousness.

  1732. righteousness.

  1733. The second thing,

  1734. we ought not to

  1735. deceive ourselves

  1736. if our besetting

  1737. sin and struggles

  1738. are with a

  1739. respectable sin.

  1740. We too will not

  1741. inherit the kingdom

  1742. of God.

  1743. Respectable sins

  1744. are not respectable,

  1745. even though they

  1746. seem very

  1747. respectable.

  1748. Easily brushed

  1749. away, not as

  1750. bad.

  1751. Yeah, it doesn't

  1752. really bother God,

  1753. maybe it

  1754. irritates him a

  1755. little bit as

  1756. a whining child

  1757. irritates a

  1758. parent, but

  1759. ultimately he

  1760. loves me, he's

  1761. going to give

  1762. me what I

  1763. want.

  1764. Let us not

  1765. deceive ourselves,

  1766. friends.

  1767. Respectable sins

  1768. are still sins.

  1769. And the third

  1770. and final thing,

  1771. there is both

  1772. forgiveness and

  1773. freedom for our

  1774. friends and

  1775. family, even

  1776. ourselves, if we

  1777. have embraced or

  1778. struggle with

  1779. homosexual behavior,

  1780. or any sin for

  1781. that matter, for

  1782. the spilt blood

  1783. of Christ on

  1784. the cross of

  1785. Calvary will

  1786. wash clean

  1787. anyone who

  1788. by faith turns

  1789. to him for

  1790. cleansing.

  1791. There is always

  1792. hope in the

  1793. gospel.

  1794. There is always

  1795. time to repent.

  1796. Today, if you

  1797. will hear his

  1798. voice, turn to

  1799. him.

  1800. God bless you

  1801. to

  1802. God bless you

  1803. and

  1804. God bless you

  1805. and

  1806. let us

  1807. dunk on

  1808. people that

  1809. are pro-LGBTQ

  1810. plus because we

  1811. are the

  1812. righteous people.

  1813. We are all

  1814. on level zero,

  1815. level minus ten,

  1816. and God by his

  1817. goodness makes us

  1818. righteous, not

  1819. our own

  1820. righteousness, so

  1821. therefore we do

  1822. not look at other

  1823. people in a

  1824. judgmental way

  1825. and spit at

  1826. them in a sense

  1827. because they are

  1828. dirty or unclean,

  1829. because we are

  1830. dirty and unclean

  1831. if not for the

  1832. grace of God.

  1833. But when

  1834. teachers and

  1835. ministers of the

  1836. gospel who have

  1837. in charge of

  1838. them by God

  1839. people that they

  1840. are to proclaim

  1841. the gospel message

  1842. and if they are

  1843. taking that gospel

  1844. and perverting it

  1845. so that they may

  1846. engage in that

  1847. kind of sensuality,

  1848. that illicit

  1849. behavior that may

  1850. or may not include

  1851. homosexuality,

  1852. and giving license

  1853. to it,

  1854. woe to them.

  1855. Maybe they have

  1856. time to repent,

  1857. pray that they

  1858. will.

  1859. In summary,

  1860. Jude sums up

  1861. verses five to

  1862. seven and verse

  1863. eight and this is

  1864. what he says.

  1865. Yet in like

  1866. manner these

  1867. people also

  1868. relying on their

  1869. dreams defile the

  1870. flesh, reject

  1871. authority, and

  1872. blaspheme the

  1873. glorious ones.

  1874. Now this is an

  1875. interesting verse

  1876. because it sums

  1877. up what has

  1878. gone before it,

  1879. verses five to

  1880. seven, but will

  1881. also point us to

  1882. what Jude will

  1883. speak to in the

  1884. following verses.

  1885. So it kind of

  1886. looks back and

  1887. looks forward.

  1888. And it sums up

  1889. verses five to

  1890. seven by saying

  1891. that the false

  1892. teachers who

  1893. claim to be

  1894. ministers of

  1895. God's message,

  1896. they're in a

  1897. sense dreamer of

  1898. dreams.

  1899. That's a bit of a

  1900. technical term in

  1901. the Bible that

  1902. speaks to prophets,

  1903. but people that

  1904. are ministers of

  1905. God.

  1906. These false

  1907. teachers who

  1908. claim to be

  1909. ministers of

  1910. God, but

  1911. instead are led

  1912. by their selfish

  1913. imaginations.

  1914. In a sense,

  1915. they're just

  1916. dreamers.

  1917. They're not

  1918. dreamers of

  1919. dreams.

  1920. They're not

  1921. prophets.

  1922. They're just

  1923. dreamers.

  1924. They make up

  1925. stuff.

  1926. They twist the

  1927. gospel.

  1928. They look at

  1929. something and

  1930. say, ah, culturally

  1931. sensitive text

  1932. right here.

  1933. It doesn't

  1934. apply to us

  1935. today.

  1936. They reject

  1937. God as the

  1938. good creator by

  1939. using God's

  1940. grace as a

  1941. license to

  1942. engage in all

  1943. sorts of

  1944. immorality.

  1945. And they

  1946. reject Christ as

  1947. master and

  1948. Lord, and they

  1949. reject God's

  1950. law.

  1951. That's the last

  1952. little bit when

  1953. it says, and

  1954. they blaspheme

  1955. the glorious

  1956. ones.

  1957. A lot of

  1958. commentators seem

  1959. to see that

  1960. as at

  1961. Sinai, when

  1962. God gives

  1963. the law to

  1964. the people

  1965. of Israel,

  1966. it is

  1967. mediated by

  1968. angels.

  1969. So in a

  1970. sense, they're

  1971. saying this is

  1972. a rejection of

  1973. God's law as

  1974. they are

  1975. blaspheming the

  1976. glorious ones.

  1977. These false

  1978. teachers, remember,

  1979. have crept in

  1980. unnoticed.

  1981. We'll see more

  1982. about what they

  1983. have done in

  1984. the general

  1985. worship of the

  1986. church in the

  1987. weeks to

  1988. come.

  1989. But what is

  1990. the big

  1991. takeaway, in

  1992. a sense, of

  1993. this section?

  1994. It's to

  1995. remember the

  1996. past, it's to

  1997. know God's

  1998. word, it's to

  1999. feed on the

  2000. truth that is

  2001. in this book, to

  2002. not shy away from

  2003. God's word, to

  2004. submit ourselves

  2005. underneath it, even

  2006. if it feels

  2007. uncomfortable and

  2008. prickly, and

2009. even if it, in a

  2010. sense, threatens our

  2011. current lifestyle and

  2012. the things we

  2013. hold dear.

  2014. We are called to

  2015. not deny the

  2016. promises of God

  2017. because we see

  2018. what happens when

  2019. we will because of

  2020. unbelief.

  2021. We will be left

  2022. in the desert.

  2023. We ought not to

  2024. call God a liar.

  2025. We ought not to

  2026. be ashamed of

  2027. any of what God

  2028. says, no matter

  2029. how uncomfortable

  2030. it may be to

  2031. adhere to this

  2032. and to look to

  2033. it in 2024 in

  2034. Ottawa.

  2035. We need to

  2036. remember also

  2037. that God's

  2038. ways lead to

  2039. beauty and

  2040. goodness and

  2041. truth and

  2042. life, that they

  2043. always look to

  2044. be fruitful.

  2045. We need to

  2046. remember also that

  2047. God is a just

  2048. judge and he

  2049. will judge and

  2050. punish those who

  2051. continue unrepentantly

  2052. to call evil

  2053. good and good

  2054. evil.

  2055. people.

  2056. If you

  2057. remember, Jude

  2058. is calling us to

  2059. contend for this

  2060. faith, but first,

  2061. has this faith

  2062. gripped us?

  2063. Has this gospel

  2064. gripped us?

  2065. Because why on

  2066. earth would I

  2067. contend for it if

  2068. it is something that

  2069. I don't even

  2070. believe in?

  2071. Friends, by God's

  2072. Holy Spirit, ask

  2073. him to help the

  2074. gospel grip your

  2075. heart so that you

  2076. cherish Christ more,

  2077. ultimately more,

  2078. than you cherish your

  2079. own life, that you

  2080. will feed on and

  2081. safeguard this

  2082. gospel, trusting in

  2083. this good news that

  2084. Christ died, not so

2085. that you can live, but

2086. so that you can die

2087. with him and then be

  2088. raised with him again

  2089. to newness of life.

  2090. No longer mastered by

2091. sin and evil, death and

  2092. temptation, knowing that

  2093. slavery to Christ is

  2094. perfect freedom.

  2095. Don't lose heart, feast

  2096. on the gospel, help

  2097. one another to feast,

  2098. encourage one another,

  2099. pray for one another,

  2100. and then, friends, let

  2101. us contend for this

  2102. gospel.

2103. It is worth our lives.

  2104. Let us pray.

  2105. Father in heaven, thank

2106. you that your word is

2107. alive and it is active

2108. and that it is sharp

2109. and that it is surely

2110. cut many, if not all of

2111. us this morning, but in

  2112. a very good way.

  2113. Lord, may we have

  2114. joyful sorrow at our

  2115. sins.

2116. Help us to be humbled

  2117. under your word, humbled

2118. with the reality of these

  2119. warnings.

2120. Help us to be people

2121. that know your word and

  2122. are reminded of your

2123. word and think about your

2124. word and meditate upon it

2125. as both a warning and an

  2126. encouragement.

2127. And Lord, we pray that you

2128. would help us to contend for

2129. this faith, that we would

  2130. embrace the gospel.

2131. And Lord, we pray that you

2132. would help us by your Holy

2133. Spirit, Lord, to push out

  2134. any strange and erroneous

  2135. doctrine that might creep

2136. into this church that we

  2137. call home.

  2138. Lord, we love you.

  2139. We thank you that

  2140. ultimately your love for

2141. us is greater than our

2142. love for you, that your

2143. love for this church is

  2144. greater than this church's

2145. love for you, that your

2146. grip on us is greater

2147. than our grip on you.

2148. And we pray this in

  2149. Christ's name.

  2150. Amen.
