  1. We continue on in Jude this morning. This is our second to last Sunday in Jude.

  2. There's something really remarkable, remarkably powerful about a hard deadline.

  3. For those of us who are, I mean, type A people, for lack of a better term,

  4. they thrive with planning and organization and creating systems.

  5. So deadlines can be as exciting as Christmas Eve.

  6. I'm not one of those people, by the way. I find that very bizarre.

  7. My wonderful wife, Christine, she loves deadlines and planning and all of that stuff.

  8. For those of us who do not thrive with planning in such a way,

  9. we may struggle to perform tasks unless there's a deadline.

  10. So we need the pressure that deadlines bring.

  11. And we find deadlines, on one hand, very stressful, but highly motivating.

  12. We need to feel the pressure for that motivation to kick into overdrive our ability to get tasks finished.

  13. But for most of us, we're a combination of somewhere in the middle.

  14. We're a combination of type A, type B.

  15. The reality is that in all such cases,

  16. knowing the end has a way of bringing the whole picture into focus

  17. and helping us feel the urgency of the task at hand.

  18. Whether you love to plan or whether you need that pressure to help you,

  19. there's something remarkable about knowing the end from the beginning.

  20. As we enter into the second half of Jude,

  21. our attention is drawn to a key question.

  22. And this is the question,

  23. how are we to live and contend for the faith in the last times or in the last days?

  24. So you'll remember that Jude is very concerned with us contending for the faith.

  25. It is a key part of his letter.

  26. And here he's going to talk about the last times or the last days.

  27. So as with working with deadlines,

  28. knowing that we are living in the last times

  29. helps us as God's people to be clear about who we are

  30. and to be urgent about what we are to do.

  31. We know that the end is on its way.

  32. It helps us to focus in the here and the now, in the present.

  33. But first, you must understand what the last times mean,

  34. at least in Jude's letter here.

  35. I would wonder, many of us come from different Christian traditions.

  36. For many of us, we might have a well-formed and coherent eschatology.

  37. That is the doctrine of the end times.

  38. We might be sure that this is exactly how it's going down.

  39. For some of us, we haven't really thought about it.

  40. For some of us, you don't want to think about it

  41. because of whatever church background you've had.

  42. So whether this is an exciting doctrine or topic for you or not,

  43. Jude here, as well as elsewhere in the New Testament,

  44. we'll talk about the end times referring to the period of time

  45. between the first and the second coming of Jesus.

  46. So whatever else the book of Revelation says

  47. or the book of Daniel says

  48. or other parts of what Jesus says in the Gospels,

  49. for us this morning, the end times refers to this period of time

  50. after Jesus dies on the cross, is buried, rises again,

  51. and then ascends to when he will come again in glory

  52. to take his own and judge the world.

  53. So this is where it's a bit difficult

  54. because when we talk about the last times or the last days,

  55. this is like a 2,000 year plus an ongoing period of time.

  56. It's like this is the last days, but like it's the last days.

  57. Throw a few more A's in there.

  58. Like you don't talk about the last days being the last millennia,

  59. but nevertheless, this is what every Christian has experienced

  60. since the church was born.

  61. That we are all living, every generation of believers,

  62. we are living in the last days.

  63. All Christians at all times are living in the last days

  64. until the Messiah, Jesus, returns

  65. and are therefore called to faithful and obedient waiting.

  66. We do not know if our Lord and Savior will come back

  67. today, tonight, tomorrow, next week.

  68. We don't know.

  69. I think that's the point.

  70. And the Holy Spirit, through the gospel writers,

  71. is communicating to us this morning

  72. that we ought to live as people in the last days.

  73. And when we know the end,

  74. it helps us to know who we are and what we are to do.

  75. So with that in mind, let me ask the question once again.

  76. How are we to live and contend for the faith

  77. as God's people in the last times?

  78. Four ways in verses 17 to 23 that Jude will help us to understand

  79. how to live and contend for the faith in the last days.

  80. The first is that we ought to remember why we need to contend in the first place.

  81. The second is that we ought to strive for personal and communal growth in the gospel.

  82. The third, that we, by faithfully waiting for the coming salvation of the Lord,

  83. we are to live a life of obedience before the Lord.

  84. And finally, and this is interesting, and we'll get to why it's interesting in a bit,

  85. in light of Jude's letter,

  86. we are called to help those who are falling into doubt and error

  87. and are on the way not to glory,

  88. but to hell.

  89. So if you have a Bible, turn with me to verse 17.

  90. We'll be in verses 17 and 19,

  91. and we'll look at

  92. how to contend for the faith

  93. by remembering why we need to contend in the first place.

  94. Look with me at verse 17 to 19.

  95. But you must remember, beloved.

  96. And I'll pause really quickly.

  97. Jude opens his letter by calling the church God's beloved.

  98. And here, as he gets to the tail end of the church,

  99. he reaffirms that.

  100. We are beloved of God.

  101. And that means something.

  102. That is a deep, wonderful truth.

  103. And Jude is hammering that home

  104. at the beginning and at the end.

  105. But you must remember, beloved,

  106. the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  107. They said to you,

  108. in the last time,

  109. there it is,

  110. there will be scoffers

  111. following their own ungodly passions.

  112. It is these who cause divisions,

  113. worldly people,

  114. devoid of the Spirit.

  115. Once again, Jude tells the church to remember,

  116. in this case,

  117. to remember both what the apostles prophesied and taught.

  118. He says here,

  119. the predictions of the apostles and what they said.

  120. To remember both what they prophesied and taught.

  121. That the church would always,

  122. God's people would always have to contend

  123. for the faith against scoffers

  124. who are slaves to their passions

  125. and as a result,

  126. divide the church.

  127. It is important to understand

  128. that the scoffers

  129. aren't simply people who are sarcastic

  130. or mean-spirited.

  131. And that's a very important point.

  132. They are people in the church.

  133. They are people sitting beside us.

  134. They could be yourself.

  135. They are people who are overly skeptical of the faith

  136. or aspects of the faith

  137. that was given to us,

  138. delivered to us, the saints,

  139. once and for all.

  140. Their minds are made up against God's Word

  141. and they influence others to doubt.

  142. By the way, this is different

  143. than some of us

  144. who are genuinely wrestling with God

  145. over how to handle thorny issues with the faith.

  146. How to reconcile miracle claims of the Bible

  147. that can't be explained through natural means.

  148. Some serious roadblocks to faith.

  149. Or some of us who have friends or family

  150. that identify as gay or lesbian or transgender

  151. that we deeply love,

  152. but at the same time are struggling with

  153. how do I love them well

  154. and yet not compromise on the biblical vision

  155. of marriage and God creating male and female.

  156. It's a struggle.

  157. So, this is not what scoffers are referring to here,

  158. just to be clear.

  159. There are some serious, hard wrestlings

  160. that need to happen

  161. as we embrace our faith

  162. and go deeper in the faith

  163. and are confronted with very difficult things

  164. that oppose the faith

  165. or oppose our ability to trust in God's Word.

  166. And oftentimes, that wrestling isn't an overnight thing.

  167. Sometimes it takes months.

  168. Sometimes it takes years.

  169. But this isn't who Jude has in mind

  170. when he refers to the scoffers.

  171. No.

  172. Scoffers are those who have abandoned the faith.

  173. They've abandoned the authority of Scripture.

  174. They've abandoned the lordship of Jesus Christ.

  175. And they have come up with their own version of Christianity.

  176. A pseudo-Christianity.

  177. A pseudo-faith.

  178. There is an irony here

  179. because Jude has told us,

  180. and we've looked at it in previous weeks,

  181. that oftentimes the scoffers are the people

  182. that are the real spiritual people in the church.

  183. They're the ones that have the Spirit.

  184. These are the ones that really know

  185. what the Bible has to say

  186. and they really know God's will and God's heart.

  187. But Jude here, ironically, says,

  188. actually, they don't have God's Spirit at all.

  189. They're devoid of the Spirit.

  190. They claim to be spiritual,

  191. but they couldn't be any farther

  192. from having the Holy Spirit reside in them.

  193. An example, and it is an egregious example,

  194. but so you kind of get the point.

  195. I've mentioned this a number of times

  196. that I and our church stands on the shoulders

  197. of some brave men and women

  198. who left the Anglican Church of Canada

  199. for this very thing,

  200. for leaving the faith once delivered to the saints,

  201. the authority of the Scriptures,

  202. the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

  203. And it wasn't just in Canada.

  204. It was in the States as well.

  205. And 10 years ago,

  206. the now former head of the Episcopal Church,

  207. that's the American version of the Anglican Church,

  208. the head of the church,

  209. not like a sub,

  210. not like a vice president or something,

  211. like the very top,

  212. the primate, as they're called,

  213. of the Episcopal Church,

  214. preached a sermon on Acts 16

  215. and claimed that the Apostle Paul

  216. was extremely, extremely in the wrong

  217. for robbing a woman

  218. who had spiritual insight.

  219. And now if you know Acts 16,

  220. you'll know that what actually happened

  221. was Paul the Apostle

  222. casted out a demon of a fortune teller

  223. and freed her from possession.

  224. It is so interesting

  225. that this woman who claims to,

  226. this leader that claims to have the Spirit

  227. couldn't be farther from the truth.

  228. Now that is an egregious example,

  229. but we know people,

  230. we might even be very close to people,

  231. we might even be people

  232. in the past or right now

  233. that will deny aspects of God's Word

  234. and claim that we are the spiritual ones.

  235. But there is nothing spiritual

  236. about departing from God's Word.

  237. God's Word, this is bread,

  238. this is life,

  239. this is real food for us.

  240. Scoffers are people

  241. that are not intellectually honest

  242. and transparent.

  243. They manipulate and they bend Christianity

  244. to fit an existing worldview

  245. rather than struggle

  246. with the difficulties in the Bible

  247. and in the faith.

  248. But God welcomes that wrestling,

  249. that struggle.

  250. In fact, Israel, Jacob,

  251. had his name changed.

  252. He struggled with God.

  253. It's a beautiful picture in Genesis

  254. of Jacob wrestling with God.

  255. The implications are that God

  256. can be wrestled with.

  257. You don't have to hide the struggles

  258. that you may be going through,

  259. the difficult questions you may be asking,

  260. because if you voice them,

  261. God will damn you.

  262. No!

  263. He will listen.

  264. He welcomes it.

  265. And as patient

  266. as the most patient person is

  267. that you've ever met,

  268. God is far more patient.

  269. And he has time for you

  270. to struggle through some of this stuff.

  271. Scoffers are not struggling.

  272. They have the appearance, maybe,

  273. of intellectual honesty and transparency,

  274. but they're not honest.

  275. They are not transparent.

  276. The scoffers hold, ultimately,

  277. God in contempt.

  278. They are not honest to us

  279. and even to themselves

  280. about their struggle or lack thereof.

  281. Jude reminds us that we must assume

  282. such people will be in the church.

  283. And he provides criteria for us

  284. to discern and recognize them

  285. so that we may contend for the faith.

  286. And this will bring us

  287. to our second point.

  288. But to properly contend for the faith,

  289. we must be people

  290. who are secure in our identities

  291. as believers,

  292. as Christians,

  293. as those that have submitted our lives

  294. to the Lord Jesus Christ,

  295. that are growing in our faith

  296. and are growing in our faith

  297. together with others.

  298. We must not grow complacent,

  299. especially in the last time.

  300. So Jude tells us,

  301. reminds us,

  302. why we're contending for the faith.

  303. And now he says,

  304. hey, listen,

  305. this is how you contend for the faith.

  306. Get your own life right.

  307. Take a look with me at verse 22

  308. and the first part of verse 21.

  309. But you, beloved,

  310. again, there we have it,

  311. but you, beloved,

  312. building yourselves up

  313. in your most holy faith

  314. and praying in the Holy Spirit,

  315. keep yourselves in the love of God.

  316. building ourselves up

  317. in the most holy faith.

  318. That holy faith

  319. is to say that

  320. this faith is received,

  321. not created,

  322. by us.

  323. We're not holy in and of ourselves.

  324. We are made holy by God.

  325. God is the only one who is holy.

  326. He gives us faith.

  327. He gives us his faith.

  328. So Jude, by saying,

  329. building yourself up

  330. in the most holy faith,

  331. we don't pretend

  332. that we have the corner

  333. on what biblical,

  334. godly faith is.

  335. We inherit it

  336. from God himself.

  337. And it is holy

  338. because it is from God.

  339. Building ourself up

  340. in the most holy faith

  341. means we are engaged

  342. in the ongoing submission

  343. of our lives

  344. to the will of God

  345. in conformity

  346. to his word.

  347. This is both

  348. an individual

  349. and communal endeavor.

  350. It is not enough

  351. to be concerned

  352. only with our own spirituality.

  353. I've said it in the past,

  354. but I think it's always

  355. a good reminder.

  356. We come into

  357. the Christian faith,

  358. into faith in God

  359. through Jesus Christ,

  360. one by one.

  361. It's a very personal faith,

  362. but we walk it out together.

  363. There is no such thing

  364. as a lone ranger Christian,

  365. as a Christian by themselves.

  366. You can't live

  367. as a Christian

  368. the way God wants you

  369. to live by yourself,

  370. apart from other believers,

  371. apart from going to church.

  372. Many of us

  373. have Christian friends

  374. and families

  375. that may go to

  376. other churches,

  377. and that's good,

  378. and we fellowship with them.

  379. But,

  380. especially around

  381. Holy Communion,

  382. and just before

  383. I pronounce the benediction,

  384. take a minute

  385. to look around you

  386. when the kids

  387. are back

  388. from children's ministry,

  389. when the helpers

  390. are back.

  391. Look around you

  392. and take a look

  393. at the people

  394. and understand

  395. that God has gathered

  396. us together,

  397. not to hang out

  398. on Sunday mornings

  399. and eat cupcakes

  400. or muffins

  401. or to see a baptism.

  402. It's fantastic.

  403. It's beautiful.

  404. But to live out

  405. this faith

  406. with one another.

  407. Now that takes time

  408. because I'm not

  409. letting anybody

  410. into my life

  411. just on a moment's notice.

  412. It takes time

  413. to gain trust

  414. and to lower guards down

  415. if you're more

  416. of an introvert,

  417. to feel more comfortable,

  418. to come up to somebody

  419. or whatever it may be,

  420. to develop relationships,

  421. to let somebody

  422. into your life.

  423. But that is

  424. what we're called to.

  425. This is how we live

  426. out our faith together.

  427. We come in one by one

  428. but we live this thing

  429. out together.

  430. And this is what

  431. we have been doing

  432. for these past

  433. two and a half years.

  434. By God's grace,

  435. unless he returns,

  436. we will do it

  437. until our youngest person

  438. is our oldest person

  439. in the congregation

  440. and all of us

  441. are gone.

  442. Now,

  443. we can do this

  444. with God's help.

  445. This is where praying

  446. in the Holy Spirit

  447. comes in.

  448. It comes into play.

  449. Which is to say

  450. that we are to live

  451. as God's children

  452. with God's help.

  453. And what does

  454. the Holy Spirit do?

  455. The Holy Spirit

  456. convicts us of our sins.

  457. The Holy Spirit

  458. leads us

  459. to have soft

  460. and repentant hearts.

  461. The Holy Spirit

  462. helps us

  463. to genuinely love others

  464. by showing concern

  465. and mercy.

  466. and the Holy Spirit

  467. helps us to pray.

  468. Leads us

  469. to Christ.

  470. And as we grow

  471. in our trust

  472. and faith,

  473. we enjoy Christ's love

  474. all the more.

  475. This is what it means

  476. to remain in God's love.

  477. I wish I could have

  478. more time

  479. to explore this

  480. and maybe I'll put it

  481. in the Wednesday

  482. email that I send out.

  483. But there's a bit

  484. of a tension here

  485. because on one hand,

  486. it's very clear

  487. in the opening verses

  488. of Jude's letter

  489. to those who are called

  490. beloved in God the Father

  491. and kept for Jesus Christ

  492. that we have been called

  493. by God.

  494. We have this faith

  495. as a gift.

  496. It is grace

  497. that we are called Christians,

  498. that we can even know God.

  499. And yet,

  500. in our text here,

  501. it says to remain

  502. in God's love

  503. as if we could fall out

  504. of God's love.

  505. There's a bit of a tension here.

  506. And I'll double-click

  507. on that,

  508. I think,

  509. later on.

  510. But all that to say

  511. is that what this means

  512. is to abide

  513. in the love of God.

  514. That Jesus says,

  515. if you love me,

  516. you will keep my commands.

  517. That is to say,

  518. the heart

  519. that is transformed

  520. by the gospel,

  521. that is saved

  522. by Christ,

  523. is the heart

  524. that seeks

  525. to obey him.

  526. So continue

  527. to obey the Lord.

  528. This leads

  529. to the third point.

  530. It also means

  531. keeping Christ's

  532. return in view,

  533. remembering that

  534. we are people

  535. deeply concerned

  536. with the present,

  537. but whose ultimate destiny

  538. is the new heavens

  539. and the new earth.

  540. Excuse me.

  541. Look at verse 21

  542. and the second part

  543. of verse 21

  544. with me.

  545. Well, actually,

  546. I'll read the first.

  547. The whole verse 21.

  548. Keep yourselves

  549. in the love of God,

  550. and here it is,

  551. waiting for the mercy

  552. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  553. that leads to eternal life.

  554. It would seem

  555. that the modern church

  556. falls into two errors,

  557. either talking too much

  558. about the last times,

  559. the end times,

  560. eschatology,

  561. deciphering

  562. when Jesus will come back,

  563. what will happen,

  564. what this represents,

  565. what that represents.

  566. Oftentimes,

  567. scripture is silent.

  568. Or,

  569. and this is probably

  570. for a church like ours,

  571. the error we fall into,

  572. and it is an error.

  573. We don't talk about it enough.

  574. We don't have in view

  575. the second coming

  576. at all

  577. about

  578. in

  579. any kind of

  580. rhythm

  581. of our

  582. of our church life.

  583. verse 21

  584. helps us to see

  585. that the second coming

  586. of Jesus

  587. is very important

  588. and will inform

  589. the way we live

  590. in the present.

  591. And that goes back

  592. to what I opened with.

  593. If you know the end,

  594. it helps us

  595. to live

  596. in the present.

  597. And how are we

  598. to live in the present?

  599. We are told here

  600. that we

  601. are to

  602. patiently

  603. obey,

  604. to,

  605. to,

  606. to have a patient

  607. faithfulness

  608. in what Christians,

  609. in,

  610. in how we are

  611. to live as Christians.

  612. We are people

  613. that lean on

  614. a prayer book.

  615. It's not much

  616. different than

  617. how

  618. Christianity

  619. and how the faith

  620. of the Bible

  621. has,

  622. has operated

  623. throughout the centuries

  624. and millennia.

  625. And we have

  626. something called

  627. Even,

  628. Even Song

  629. or Evening Prayer.

  630. And Evening Prayer,

  631. it's a beautiful service,

  632. it's fairly short.

  633. We have an adaptation

  634. of it in our daily offices,

  635. but if you have a book

  636. of common prayer,

  637. you can see it.

  638. But Evening Prayer

  639. ends

  640. with the prayer

  641. of Simeon

  642. from Luke chapter 2.

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  643. If you remember

  644. Simeon from Luke chapter 2,

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  645. Jesus is presented

  646. at the temple

  647. and this elderly man

  648. who has been waiting

  649. for the coming

  650. of the Messiah

  651. patiently,

  652. faithfully,

  653. day in,

  654. day out,

  655. month in,

  656. month out,

  657. decade in,

  658. decade out,

  659. finally,

  660. gets to see Jesus,

  661. the Messiah

  662. in the flesh.

  663. And this is what we pray

  664. in Even Song

  665. every evening.

  666. It's beautiful.

  667. It says,

  668. Lord,

  669. now you are letting

  670. your servant

  671. depart in peace

  672. according to your word.

  673. For my eyes

  674. have seen

  675. your salvation

  676. that you have prepared

  677. in the presence

  678. of all peoples,

  679. a light for revelation

  680. to the Gentiles

  681. and for glory

  682. to your people Israel.

  683. That is the posture

  684. we ought to have.

  685. Patiently waiting

  686. and obeying,

  687. looking to the coming

  688. of our Lord

  689. in the same way

  690. that Simeon looked

  691. for the first coming

  692. of the Messiah.

  693. The point is this.

  694. As we wait

  695. for the return of Christ,

  696. we will begin

  697. to long

  698. for the return of Christ.

  699. to see Him

  700. and be with Him,

  701. to touch Him

  702. and to know His love

  703. in greater and greater

  704. measures

  705. for all of eternity

  706. so that we will never

  707. come to the bottom

  708. of the well

  709. of God's love

  710. sometime in

  711. the 10,000th year

  712. we are in the new heavens

  713. and the new earth

  714. because His love

  715. is infinite.

  716. So we can,

  717. for eternity,

  718. search for

  719. and plumb the depths

  720. of God's love.

  721. And as we think

  722. about that,

  723. I think I do not

  724. experience that love

  725. in this life.

  726. The love that I experience

  727. is a wonderful love

  728. with family

  729. and friends

  730. and church community

  731. but it is not

  732. a perfect love.

  733. It is a shadow,

  734. it is a picture

  735. of what the love

  736. of God looks like

  737. but one day

  738. when He comes

  739. we will know

  740. that perfect love

  741. and it will be unending.

  742. the point is this,

  743. when we wait

  744. for the return

  745. of Christ

  746. we begin to long

  747. for the return

  748. of Christ.

  749. We long for it.

  750. The things that we enjoy,

  751. the good,

  752. the true and the beautiful

  753. of this life

  754. will point us

  755. to that life

  756. to come

  757. where we will

  758. enjoy the glory

  759. of God

  760. forever and ever.

  761. our priorities

  762. will change.

  763. Our thinking

  764. will change.

  765. Our obedience

  766. will not necessarily

  767. be any less costly

  768. but there will be

  769. a greater degree

  770. of joy

  771. as we obey.

  772. And this will lead us

  773. to our final point.

  774. It will also help us

  775. to be Christ-like

  776. and show mercy

  777. to those

  778. who we would

  779. otherwise despise

  780. or cancel

  781. or hope to God

  782. that they would

  783. be eliminated.

  784. How are we

  785. to live and contend

  786. for the faith

  787. in the last times?

  788. We are also called

  789. to help those

  790. who are falling

  791. into doubt

  792. and error.

  793. Look with me

  794. at verses 22

  795. to 23.

  796. And have mercy

  797. on those

  798. who doubt

  799. save others

  800. by snatching them

  801. out of the fire

  802. to those

  803. show mercy

  804. with fear

  805. hating even

  806. the garments

  807. stained by the flesh.

  808. Very quickly

  809. we are going to look

  810. at the three

  811. groups of people

  812. in view here.

  813. Each group

  814. is a harder

  815. case than the last.

  816. So let's look

  817. at the first group.

  818. It says here

  819. in verse 22

  820. And have mercy

  821. on those who doubt.

  822. Now we have talked

  823. about the doubters.

  824. And these people

  825. we are to show

  826. mercy to.

  827. They are the ones

  828. that are struggling

  829. and wrestling

  830. with the difficult

  831. aspects of the faith

  832. and may have begun

  833. to lose steam

  834. in their wrestling.

  835. Now I mentioned

  836. wrestling with

  837. some of these

  838. hard doctrines

  839. it's not an

  840. overnight thing.

  841. I'll share

  842. a personal story.

  843. I struggled

  844. with the legitimacy

  845. of especially

  846. the Gospels

  847. for eight years

  848. after my undergrad.

  849. I went to Carleton

  850. thinking

  851. puffed out chest

  852. I'm 21

  853. I know everything

  854. there is to know

  855. about the Bible.

  856. Idiots

  857. over there.

  858. And then I get

  859. to my third year

  860. seminar

  861. fourth year seminar

  862. on the life

  863. and teachings

  864. of Jesus.

  865. Breeze

  866. no problem.

  867. And all of a sudden

  868. all of these

  869. questions

  870. about the

  871. inconsistencies

  872. between the

  873. Gospels

  874. start getting

  875. exposed.

  876. and my foundation

  877. starts to crack.

  878. Now

  879. by God's

  880. kindness

  881. and grace

  882. I didn't

  883. abandon the faith

  884. but it was an

  885. eight year process.

  886. It wasn't until

  887. I was in seminary

  888. which is crazy

  889. to think

  890. that I realized

  891. through

  892. other

  893. materials

  894. that I

  895. encountered

  896. that the

  897. Gospels

  898. are totally

  899. trustworthy.

  900. that was an

  901. eight year process.

  902. How about if

  903. in year three

  904. somebody was not

  905. merciful to me?

  906. Daniel

  907. you have to

  908. trust in this

  909. or you're not

  910. a Christian.

  911. I'm sorry

  912. but you need to

  913. trust in the Bible

  914. or else you

  915. can't be around

  916. us or

  917. you know

  918. you can't serve

  919. in the church

  920. or you can't

  921. participate in the

  922. life of the

  923. covenant community.

  924. Or maybe it's

  925. on year seven

  926. and ten months

  927. I got two months

  928. to go

  929. I don't know

  930. the future

  931. so you know

  932. eight months

  933. eight and a half

  934. months

  935. you get the

  936. point.

  937. I'm on the

  938. verge of

  939. dealing with

  940. my doubts

  941. and mercy

  942. was not

  943. extended to

  944. me.

  945. Friends we

  946. show mercy

  947. to people

  948. because we

  949. are people

  950. who receive

  951. God's mercy.

  952. Struggling

  953. through difficult

  954. things

  955. they're real

  956. and doubting

  957. here

  958. we go through

  959. seasons of it.

  960. If you know

  961. somebody who is

  962. doubting or if

  963. you're doubting

  964. yourself do not

  965. be afraid to

  966. share that

  967. and then to

  968. walk with

  969. people.

  970. Here Jude

  971. says listen

  972. have mercy

  973. on those

  974. people.

  975. Does he give

  976. does he give

  977. does he give a

  978. time frame?

  979. Five years?

  980. Six years?

  981. Seven years?

  982. No because we've

  983. seen in previous

  984. a previous part

  985. of Jude when we

  986. say that they're

  987. hopeless

  988. when we say

  989. in a sense

  990. pronouncing judgment

  991. on somebody that

  992. they're so far

  993. gone

  994. we sit in the

  995. judgment seat

  996. of God.

  997. Jude calls

  998. that blasphemy.

  999. We continue

  1000. to show

  1001. mercy

  1002. to those

  1003. who are

  1004. struggling

  1005. through this.

  1006. The second

  1007. group

  1008. they're a bit

  1009. further down

  1010. the path

  1011. of doubt.

  1012. This is what

  1013. it says

  1014. save others

  1015. by snatching

  1016. them out of

  1017. the fire.

  1018. these people

  1019. are at risk

  1020. of apostasy.

  1021. They're playing

  1022. with fire

  1023. and it is not

  1024. it truly is

  1025. a hellfire.

  1026. They have been

  1027. courted by

  1028. false teachings

  1029. and have begun

  1030. to pervert

  1031. the gospel

  1032. of grace.

  1033. We saw that

  1034. in verse 3.

  1035. This is the

  1036. the MO

  1037. of false

  1038. teachers that

  1039. they pervert

  1040. the gospel

  1041. of grace.

  1042. They may be

  1043. our friends

  1044. or family

  1045. who have begun

  1046. to have

  1047. deconstructed

  1048. their faith.

  1049. They're on

  1050. their way

  1051. to apostasy

  1052. but they

  1053. again are

  1054. not too far

  1055. gone

  1056. for God

  1057. can use

  1058. us

  1059. his church

  1060. by his

  1061. Holy Spirit

  1062. to save

  1063. them

  1064. as their

  1065. lives

  1066. begin to

  1067. burn.

  1068. Again we

  1069. aren't the

  1070. people to

  1071. pronounce

  1072. judgment

  1073. we are just

  1074. called to

  1075. be faithful

  1076. in showing

  1077. mercy

  1078. understanding

  1079. that we

  1080. are living

  1081. in the

  1082. last days.

  1083. The third

  1084. and final

  1085. group

  1086. are those

  1087. immersed

  1088. in false

  1089. doctrines

  1090. and they

  1091. quite possibly

  1092. could be

  1093. the false

  1094. teachers

  1095. themselves.

  1096. Look at

  1097. what it

  1098. says here

  1099. in verse 23.

  1100. To others

  1101. show mercy

  1102. with fear

  1103. hating even

  1104. the garment

  1105. stained by

  1106. the flesh.

  1107. To these

  1108. Jude tells us

  1109. to have mercy

  1110. but be

  1111. resolute in

  1112. our commitment

  1113. to the faith.

  1114. There's great

  1115. danger

  1116. that when we

  1117. spend time

  1118. with people

  1119. that have

  1120. abandoned

  1121. the faith

  1122. but in

  1123. a very

  1124. real way

  1125. are still

  1126. one foot

  1127. into the

  1128. church.

  1129. They still

  1130. have influence.

  1131. They still

  1132. teach and

  1133. live in such

  1134. a way that

  1135. encourages

  1136. apostasy.

  1137. We need to

  1138. be careful

  1139. and honest

  1140. with ourselves

  1141. that we

  1142. could be

  1143. influenced

  1144. as well.

  1145. This is

  1146. a very

  1147. wise way

  1148. that Jude

  1149. is telling

  1150. us

  1151. to just

  1152. be on

  1153. guard.

  1154. To fear

  1155. God more

  1156. than you

  1157. fear man.

  1158. To trust

  1159. in God

  1160. more than

  1161. you trust

  1162. in man.

  1163. And this

  1164. bit here

  1165. that Jude

  1166. talks about

  1167. of hating

  1168. even the

  1169. garment

  1170. stained by

  1171. the flesh

  1172. is a way

  1173. to simply

  1174. say we

  1175. need to

  1176. hate sin.

  1177. It is to

  1178. have such

  1179. compassion

  1180. and love

  1181. extending

  1182. mercy to

  1183. somebody

  1184. that is

  1185. living a

  1186. sinful life

  1187. but to

  1188. not fall

  1189. into the

  1190. temptation

  1191. of justifying

  1192. what they

  1193. do.

  1194. Hate it.

  1195. Hate what

  1196. they do.

  1197. Love them.

  1198. And this

  1199. isn't just

  1200. a love

  1201. the sinner

  1202. or hate

  1203. the sin

  1204. because that

  1205. can lose

  1206. the gravity

  1207. of what we

  1208. are called

  1209. to do

  1210. here.

  1211. We are

  1212. to hate

  1213. sin.

  1214. God

  1215. hates

  1216. sin

  1217. but to

  1218. extend

  1219. mercy.

  1220. Why?

  1221. Because we

  1222. have been

  1223. extended

  1224. mercy.

  1225. The whole

  1226. picture of

  1227. filthy garments

  1228. we see it

  1229. in Amos

    Amos 4 chapter mention

  1230. chapter 4

  1231. and Zechariah

    Zechariah 3 chapter mention

  1232. chapter 3.

  1233. It is this

  1234. beautiful picture

  1235. of God

  1236. taking

  1237. this

  1238. dirty

  1239. person

  1240. dirty

  1241. representing

  1242. sin

  1243. and

  1244. stripping

  1245. them

  1246. of the

  1247. dirty

  1248. garments

  1249. and

  1250. instead

  1251. clothing

  1252. them

  1253. in

  1254. garments

  1255. of

  1256. white.

  1257. It is a

  1258. picture of

  1259. forgiveness

  1260. and only

  1261. God can

  1262. do such

  1263. things.

  1264. It also

  1265. once again

  1266. means that

  1267. nobody is

  1268. so far

  1269. gone.

  1270. We do

  1271. not get to

  1272. pronounce

  1273. judgment

  1274. do we?

  1275. Only to

  1276. extend

  1277. mercy.

  1278. So in

  1279. all three

  1280. cases we

  1281. are to

  1282. show

  1283. mercy

  1284. as those

  1285. who have

  1286. been

  1287. shown

  1288. mercy.

  1289. So what

  1290. does it

  1291. mean to

  1292. be Christ-like?

  1293. Well what

  1294. does our

  1295. Savior do?

  1296. He extends

  1297. mercy to

  1298. those that

  1299. don't deserve

  1300. it.

  1301. So what

  1302. do we

  1303. do?

  1304. We extend

  1305. mercy to

  1306. those who

  1307. don't deserve

  1308. it.

  1309. We are to

  1310. be Christ-like.

  1311. This is

  1312. really the

  1313. point of how

  1314. to contend

  1315. and live as

  1316. God's people

  1317. in the last

  1318. days.

  1319. To be

  1320. people marked

  1321. by the

  1322. grace of

  1323. God.

  1324. People who

  1325. cling to

  1326. the gospel

  1327. and grow

  1328. in our

  1329. love and

  1330. obedience

  1331. for Christ

  1332. as we

  1333. await his

  1334. ultimate

  1335. final salvation

  1336. when he will

  1337. come again

  1338. to judge

  1339. the living

  1340. and the

  1341. dead

  1342. where we

  1343. will spend

  1344. eternity

  1345. in glory

  1346. with him

  1347. in the

  1348. new heavens

  1349. and the

  1350. new earth.

  1351. We will

  1352. be marked

  1353. with a

  1354. Trinitarian

  1355. hope in

  1356. this life.

  1357. And we

  1358. see it

  1359. right here

  1360. as we

  1361. pray in

  1362. the Holy

  1363. Spirit,

  1364. keeping

  1365. ourselves

  1366. in the

  1367. love of

  1368. God the

  1369. Father,

  1370. and as we

  1371. await the

  1372. mercy of

  1373. Christ that

  1374. leads to

  1375. eternal life

  1376. as God's

  1377. beloved,

  1378. this is how

  1379. we contend

  1380. for the

  1381. faith,

  1382. faithfully,

  1383. obediently,

  1384. in the

  1385. last days.

  1386. friends.

  1387. This is the

  1388. antidote

  1389. for false

  1390. teaching.

  1391. And it is

  1392. also the

  1393. source for

  1394. spiritual strength

  1395. for us to

  1396. live faithfully

  1397. and patiently

  1398. with gospel

  1399. centered lives.

  1400. Let's pray.

  1401. Heavenly

  1402. Father,

  1403. thank you so

  1404. much for

  1405. these

  1406. reminders

  1407. from Jude.

  1408. Lord,

  1409. we need

  1410. reminding

  1411. because we

  1412. are people

  1413. who forget.

  1414. So help

  1415. us to be

  1416. people that

  1417. remember.

  1418. Help us to

  1419. be people that

  1420. come to your

  1421. word often

  1422. and always.

  1423. Help us to

  1424. never think we

  1425. are above

  1426. your word.

  1427. Help us to

  1428. never think

  1429. that your

  1430. word,

  1431. your gospel

  1432. is old

  1433. hat.

  1434. Instead,

  1435. help us to

  1436. live faithfully,

  1437. contending for

  1438. the faith in

  1439. these last

  1440. days.

  1441. Whether they

  1442. come in our

  1443. generation or

  1444. not,

  1445. Lord,

  1446. let us

  1447. live knowing

  1448. who we

  1449. are in

  1450. you and

  1451. living by

  1452. your strength

  1453. with urgency

  1454. in this

  1455. life.

  1456. We pray

  1457. this in

  1458. Christ's

  1459. name.

  1460. Amen.
