  1. Before we get into the Word of God, let me say a quick prayer and ask for the Lord's blessing.

  2. Heavenly Father, remind us afresh this morning that your Word is true.

  3. And whether we think it or not, or whether we know it or not, this is the true food that we need this morning.

  4. Lord, we thank you that we get to hear your Word.

  5. And by your Spirit, Lord, we ask that that Word would go into our souls, that we consider it and obey it.

  6. And Lord, trust that when you say it will produce fruit in our lives, that it truly will.

  7. So we give this time to you this morning in Christ's name. Amen.

  8. We moved to the area from the downtown.

  9. I mean, we're living in Ottawa, but we moved to the West End four years ago this upcoming June.

  10. And one of the first things after we moved in and settled and we painted everything is I decided I was going to build a guest room in the basement.

  11. Have I framed anything in my life?

  12. No, I didn't.

  13. I ordered a bunch of wood.

  14. I picked it up.

  15. I put it through a window just because our basement's a bit tricky to get some 8-foot, 10-foot beams down there.

  16. Anyways, I framed it up.

  17. It took me a while.

  18. And then I left it for like a year and a half, two years.

  19. That's it.

  20. That's all I did.

  21. I didn't even wire outlets.

  22. I didn't think of drywall.

  23. I got discouraged or distracted.

  24. Probably both.

  25. I did not finish the job.

  26. About a year and a half, two years later, I finished the job with the help of actually my barber, which is kind of random, a point that doesn't need to be made in the sermon.

  27. But anyways, he helped me.

  28. And we finally got it finished.

  29. It turned out I did a terrible job.

  30. So it was probably a good thing that I didn't complete it.

  31. But it wouldn't be the first time that I began a project and didn't finish it.

  32. I have started things.

  33. And whether, again, distraction or discouragement, I tap out.

  34. I just leave it.

  35. It's half done.

  36. It's a half-framed room, metaphorically speaking.

  37. It reminded me this morning, or leading up to this morning, that it is so easy to start things, especially around January.

  38. It is so easy to start things, but very, very challenging to finish.

  39. We're going to wrap up Jude this morning.

  40. There's been a warning and an encouragement to the church to love Jesus so much so that we would be willing to contend for the faith that was once delivered to all the saints.

  41. Jude has reminded us that there will be false teachers at every age, something that is not new to the history of God.

  42. If you remember, Jude gave us examples from the Israelites who were rescued from Egypt going into the Promised Land,

  43. and how there were false teachers and grumblers and rebels and the people of Sodom and Gomorrah,

  44. even the angelic beings who were rebels pushing against the authority and goodness of God.

  45. For 23 verses, we have learned about judgment and warnings.

  46. And, if I'm honest, I'm a bit weary of the content.

  47. A lot of judgment, week after week, can be heavy.

  48. It has been heavy.

  49. And, the thought of contending indefinitely seems awfully hard and difficult.

  50. I put this out to you.

  51. Do you wonder, as I do, genuinely,

  52. sometimes that you might not be able to make it to the finish line of your faith?

  53. That whether Christ comes back, or you are either a person of riper years,

  54. as the prayer book calls older folk, or some kind of accident, whatever,

  55. whether you meet your end in this life, or Christ comes back,

  56. do you ever wonder if you have the strength to make it to the end?

  57. Or, have you simply started a faith journey only to not complete it?

  58. Given the topic and content of the letter,

  59. verses 1 to 23,

  60. save for a couple verses here and there that are wonderful sources of encouragement,

  61. especially verses 1 and 2,

  62. verses 24 and 25 seem like nice words to incorporate

  63. at the end of a very intense letter.

  64. Jude will bookend the letter with nice encouragement,

  65. talking about us being the beloved of God,

  66. and it seems fitting.

  67. However, these aren't just nice words that Jude bookends the letter with.

  68. They actually serve two huge purposes for us.

  69. The first, it's a relief and balm in times of struggle and doubt.

  70. We've talked about struggle and doubt a number of times over the past few weeks,

  71. and like I may mention just a few moments ago,

  72. a lot of talk about judgment and struggle and doubt.

  73. Warnings are good, but nonstop warnings can be heavy.

  74. So, verses 24 and 25 that Brad read,

  75. they're balm to our souls, they're encouragement to us.

  76. The rest for our weary souls.

  77. When you are tempted to rebel,

  78. when you are tempted to look elsewhere,

  79. to compromise on the truth of God's word,

  80. to not obey

  81. what God has called us to

  82. live out,

  83. this is balm for us,

  84. this is help for us,

  85. but it's also a preparation.

  86. It's preparation for a long, faithful walk with Christ

  87. until either he brings us home

  88. through death or his return.

  89. It's a preparation

  90. in the same,

  91. to live out this faithful walk.

  92. Eugene Peterson wrote a book on discipleship,

  93. and he entitled it

  94. A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.

  95. That's the Christian life.

  96. And this is what Jude is preparing us for,

  97. a long obedience in the same direction.

  98. Understanding that there are times of struggle,

  99. of valley,

  100. of discouragement,

  101. where we don't feel God's presence

  102. or even feel like engaging with him at all.

  103. Jude is preparing us

  104. for this long obedience

  105. in the same direction.

  106. So Jude prepares us

  107. for a long obedience in the same direction

  108. by drawing our attention

  109. to two fundamental aspects of Jesus

  110. in verses 24 and 25.

  111. Very simple.

  112. What Jesus does

  113. and who Jesus is.

  114. After our time in verse 24 and 25,

  115. I hope you will see with me

  116. that Eugene Peterson,

  117. although that's a wonderful way

  118. to talk about the Christian life,

  119. I think he

  120. should have added

  121. a very small

  122. but very significant

  123. adjective to his title.

  124. It should have been this,

  125. in my humble opinion,

  126. a long and joyous obedience

  127. in the same direction.

  128. Because verse 24 and 25

  129. will help us to have joy

  130. for a lifetime

  131. as we venture with the Lord.

  132. So let's jump into it.

  133. What Jesus does.

  134. Look with me at verse 24.

  135. This is what it says.

  136. Now to him who is able

  137. to keep you from stumbling

  138. and to present you blameless

  139. before the presence

  140. of his glory

  141. with great joy.

  142. We might be tempted

  143. to skip to

  144. what Jesus does here.

  145. That he will

  146. keep us from stumbling,

  147. present us blameless.

  148. But what does Jude tell us

  149. right before that?

  150. He says this.

  151. Now to him who is able,

  152. Jesus is able.

  153. This isn't just

  154. a comment on

  155. what he can do.

  156. It is a comment

  157. of,

  158. I mean,

  159. our second point

  160. is who Jesus is

  161. but this is a key point

  162. for what Jesus does

  163. because he is able.

  164. It speaks to our Savior

  165. not being a weak Savior.

  166. He does not suffer fatigue

  167. nor does he lack power.

  168. He has great abilities

  169. and powers.

  170. But it's not that Jesus

  171. has this great power

  172. because he was weak

  173. at some point

  174. and had to augment

  175. his weakness

  176. with great power.

  177. It's not like Jesus

  178. came upon

  179. some source

  180. of his strength

  181. and that's how he

  182. is powerful,

  183. how he is great.

  184. but rather

  185. that he has always

  186. been able.

  187. He has always

  188. been strong.

  189. He has always

  190. had such great power.

  191. In fact,

  192. he is great power.

  193. What do I mean

  194. by that?

  195. To say that

  196. Jesus doesn't

  197. just have power

  198. but he is power,

  199. it's an expression

  200. of Jesus'

  201. divine simplicity

  202. and if that

  203. confuses you,

  204. just stick with me

  205. for a moment.

  206. This doctrine

  207. of divine simplicity

  208. is key to

  209. Christianity,

  210. key to

  211. the orthodox faith,

  212. the key to

  213. understanding

  214. who God is.

  215. And it means

  216. that Jesus,

  217. God,

  218. the Son of God

  219. incarnate,

  220. but really

  221. the entire Godhead,

  222. Father,

  223. Son,

  224. and Holy Spirit,

  225. he exists

  226. not as a

  227. changeable

  228. being

  229. in which

  230. he acquires

  231. knowledge

  232. or power

  233. or abilities.

  234. He never

  235. lacks.

  236. He is who

  237. he is

  238. and in that

  239. way,

  240. God has

  241. the attribute

  242. of salvific

  243. power

  244. from the

  245. very beginning.

  246. There was

  247. never a

  248. time where

  249. God,

  250. the Son of

  251. God,

  252. ever had

  253. a point

  254. in his

  255. existence

  256. where he

  257. was not

  258. able to

  259. save.

  260. It is not

  261. as if

  262. God,

  263. the Father,

  264. sent God,

  265. the Son,

  266. who took

  267. on human

  268. flesh

  269. and then

  270. was somehow

  271. empowered by

  272. God the

  273. Father to

  274. do the

  275. salvific work

  276. of dying on

  277. the cross and

  278. saving us from

  279. our sins.

  280. He always

  281. possessed

  282. such power.

  283. therefore,

  284. it is not

  285. that God has

  286. the attributes

  287. of salvation,

  288. but he is

  289. salvation

  290. himself.

  291. It is not

  292. that God has

  293. the attributes

  294. of being

  295. powerful.

  296. He is

  297. power

  298. himself.

  299. it is a

  300. very important

  301. point because

  302. in some

  303. areas we

  304. are made

  305. in God's

  306. image,

  307. so we

  308. share in

  309. some of

  310. the qualities

  311. of who

  312. God is.

  313. We have

  314. a rational

  315. mind,

  316. for instance,

  317. but there are

  318. other qualities

  319. where we do

  320. not share

  321. in God's

  322. qualities,

  323. and this is

  324. one of them.

  325. We are

  326. people that

  327. lack.

  328. We are

  329. people that

  330. are finite.

  331. We are

  332. people that

  333. are not

  334. all-powerful,

  335. and sometimes

  336. we can

  337. augment our

  338. lack of

  339. power or

  340. lack of

  341. might to

  342. accomplish

  343. things that

  344. otherwise we

  345. wouldn't be

  346. able to

  347. accomplish.

  348. You go to

  349. school to

  350. learn great

  351. things.

  352. You don't

  353. have those

  354. great things

  355. inherently

  356. inside of

  357. you when

  358. you are

  359. born.

  360. You have

  361. to acquire

  362. them from

  363. outside.

  364. Not so

  365. with God.

  366. He is

  367. the source

  368. of all

  369. knowledge,

  370. of all

  371. power,

  372. of all

  373. might.

  374. And

  375. therefore,

  376. to talk

  377. about God

  378. and his

  379. attributes is

  380. to talk

  381. about God

  382. himself.

  383. In the

  384. same way

  385. that God

  386. was able to

  387. speak creation

  388. and it was

  389. so, so

  390. too is

  391. Jesus able

  392. to keep

  393. and present

  394. us.

  395. Jesus is

  396. able because

  397. he cannot

  398. be otherwise.

  399. That is

  400. excellent news

  401. because it

  402. means we

  403. have the

  404. ultimate

  405. savior,

  406. savior,

  407. the

  408. ultimate

  409. person in

  410. our

  411. corner who

  412. cannot fail

  413. and cannot

  414. be overcome

  415. and cannot

  416. be thwarted

  417. and cannot

  418. be emptied

  419. of that

  420. power because

  421. it is who

  422. he is.

  423. Jude tells

  424. us here

  425. that Jesus,

  426. this Jesus,

  427. is able

  428. to do

  429. two things,

  430. one negative

  431. and one

  432. positive.

  433. the negative

  434. thing,

  435. he keeps

  436. us from

  437. stumbling

  438. but the

  439. positive

  440. thing is

  441. that he

  442. presents

  443. us blameless

  444. before the

  445. presence of

  446. his glory

  447. with great

  448. joy.

  449. And friends,

  450. he could

  451. not do

  452. this if he

  453. was not

  454. able.

  455. If he

  456. did not

  457. have the

  458. power,

  459. if he

  460. was not

  461. the power

  462. himself.

  463. Let's

  464. look at

  465. these two

  466. things that

  467. Jesus is

  468. able to

  469. do.

  470. Let's

  471. look at the

  472. first thing,

  473. that he is

  474. able to

  475. keep us

  476. from

  477. stumbling.

  478. Jude has

  479. urged us

  480. to keep

  481. watch for

  482. false

  483. teachers.

  484. He urged

  485. us to

  486. contend for

  487. the faith,

  488. to keep

  489. ourselves in

  490. the love

  491. of God,

  492. to show

  493. mercy to

  494. those who

  495. doubt.

  496. This is

  497. the call

  498. of faithful

  499. living.

  500. But who

  501. in this

  502. room or

  503. on earth,

  504. in all

  505. of God's

  506. church across

  507. the world,

  508. across space,

  509. in the history

  510. of the church,

  511. across time,

  512. could ever

  513. keep the

  514. call

  515. perfectly?

  516. Who is

  517. the faithful

  518. one who

  519. can keep

  520. God's

  521. commands

  522. perfectly?

  523. It is

  524. not me,

  525. and it

  526. certainly

  527. is not

  528. you.

  529. We

  530. can't,

  531. by sheer

  532. grit,

  533. keep God's

  534. commands,

  535. stand true

  536. to the

  537. faith,

  538. consistently

  539. abide in

  540. God's love

  541. and compassion

  542. all of our

  543. days.

  544. We're bound

  545. to trip up,

  546. we're bound

  547. to fail,

  548. even though

  549. those whom

  550. Christ has

  551. saved are

  552. free from

  553. being slaves

  554. to sin.

  555. We are not

  556. yet glorified,

  557. we are not

  558. yet made

  559. perfect,

  560. so we are

  561. bound to

  562. trip up,

  563. we are

  564. bound to

  565. stumble.

  566. Jesus knows

  567. our weaknesses,

  568. he knows

  569. our propensity

  570. to get weary,

  571. he is aware

  572. of the nature

  573. of temptation

  574. that wears

  575. on us

  576. day by

  577. day by

  578. day.

  579. this doesn't

  580. take him

  581. by surprise.

  582. Again,

  583. divine simplicity,

  584. he knows

  585. everything,

  586. he is

  587. knowledge

  588. itself.

  589. This does

  590. not surprise

  591. Christ.

  592. So how

  593. wonderful is

  594. it to hear

  595. that Jesus

  596. is able to

  597. keep us

  598. from stumbling,

  599. literally to

  600. guard us

  601. from falling.

  602. It's as if

  603. he is so

  604. close that

  605. when we are

  606. bound to

  607. stumble,

  608. he will not

  609. let us

  610. fall.

  611. His grip

  612. on us

  613. is certainly

  614. tighter than

  615. our grip

  616. on him.

  617. We are

  618. reassured

  619. here that

  620. as we

  621. seek to

  622. obey,

  623. he is

  624. able to

  625. uphold.

  626. He sees

  627. that we

  628. strive and

  629. we ask

  630. him for

  631. strength,

  632. often times

  633. we try to

  634. do it

  635. on our

  636. own,

  637. with our

  638. own

  639. might,

  640. we fall,

  641. we stumble,

  642. he sees

  643. it and yet

  644. he upholds

  645. us.

  646. He

  647. guards us

  648. from falling.

  649. What a

  650. wonderful thing

  651. to be

  652. assured of.

  653. It is not

  654. a license

  655. to sin,

  656. but a

  657. recognition

  658. of our

  659. brokenness,

  660. our fragility,

  661. spiritually

  662. speaking.

  663. It is a

  664. promise that

  665. Christ doesn't

  666. start

  667. renovation

  668. projects,

  669. only to

  670. abandon

  671. them.

  672. He doesn't

  673. begin a

  674. work in

  675. your life

  676. and then

  677. he might

  678. run out of

  679. money or

  680. time or

  681. effort.

  682. He doesn't

  683. say,

  684. this person

  685. is driving

  686. me crazy

  687. a hundred

  688. times,

  689. two hundred

  690. times,

  691. they don't

  692. get it.

  693. Yeah,

  694. they say

  695. sorry,

  696. they seek

  697. forgiveness.

  698. I'm

  699. growing weary

  700. of this

  701. person.

  702. He doesn't

  703. say that.

  704. He is

  705. there.

  706. He will

  707. catch us

  708. as we

  709. stumble.

  710. He finishes

  711. the works.

  712. He begins.

  713. But he

  714. doesn't

  715. merely keep

  716. us from

  717. stumbling,

  718. does he?

  719. If so,

  720. we would

  721. still be

  722. in an

  723. eternally

  724. bad

  725. predicament,

  726. unable to

  727. solve the

  728. problem of

  729. being unworthy

  730. and blameless

  731. and therefore

  732. disqualified from

  733. being with God

  734. forever.

  735. So what does

  736. Jesus do?

  737. He doesn't

  738. just keep us

  739. from stumbling.

  740. He presents

  741. us to

  742. God,

  743. the Father.

  744. The question

  745. is,

  746. how can

  747. sinful

  748. people

  749. like us

  750. stand before

  751. a perfect

  752. God in

  753. his presence?

  754. Jude,

  755. once again,

  756. he flexes

  757. his biblical

  758. knowledge.

  759. A couple

  760. words here

  761. that,

  762. again,

  763. if we could

  764. double-click

  765. them,

  766. we could

  767. spend a

  768. whole sermon

  769. series on

  770. looking through

  771. some of

  772. these biblical

  773. references that

  774. Jude gives.

  775. But this is

  776. some of the

  777. allusions Jude

  778. refers to

  779. here.

  780. So throughout

  781. the Old

  782. Testament,

  783. the presence

  784. of God,

  785. it was a

  786. terrifying

  787. thing.

  788. No human

  789. could stand

  790. in God's

  791. presence

  792. because God

  793. is holy

  794. and we are

  795. not.

  796. He is pure

  797. and we are

  798. not.

  799. We read

  800. in two places

  801. in the Old

  802. Testament,

  803. one in

  804. Malachi 3

  805. and Psalm

  806. 15,

  807. that essentially

  808. say the same

  809. thing.

  810. I will read

  811. just in

  812. Malachi 3

    Malachi 3:2

  813. verse 2.

  814. But who

  815. can endure

  816. the day of

  817. his coming?

  818. Who can

  819. stand when

  820. he appears?

  821. For he is

  822. like a

  823. refiner's

  824. fire and

  825. like fuller's

  826. soap.

  827. Who can

  828. stand in

  829. the presence

  830. of almighty

  831. God?

  832. Is the

  833. question that

  834. is asked.

  835. It is a

  836. rhetorical

  837. question because

  838. the answer is

  839. nobody.

  840. Who can

  841. stand,

  842. and what is

  843. implied here,

  844. and not

  845. flinch or

  846. not be

  847. destroyed,

  848. or not be

  849. cast down,

  850. or not fall

  851. into great

  852. terror before

  853. the presence

  854. of God?

  855. And the

  856. answer is

  857. no one.

  858. No one

  859. can genuinely

  860. and uprightly

  861. stand before

  862. the presence

  863. of God.

  864. Even more

  865. when we see

  866. instances of

  867. scripture where

  868. people stand

  869. before God's

  870. presence.

  871. Think of

  872. Isaiah in,

  873. I mean,

  874. this was just

  875. a vision,

  876. Isaiah in

  877. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  878. 6.

  879. He is

  880. overcome with

  881. grief over

  882. his sins

  883. and fear,

  884. dread,

  885. in front of

  886. the presence

  887. of God.

  888. And yet,

  889. Jude is

  890. telling us

  891. that Jesus

  892. cannot only

  893. keep us from

  894. stumbling,

  895. but present us

  896. before the

  897. presence of

  898. God in a

  899. worthy manner

  900. so that we

  901. are not

  902. completely

  903. undone.

  904. Friends,

  905. Jude is

  906. using language

  907. that points

  908. to cleansing.

  909. Again,

  910. we can't

  911. do a deep

  912. dive this

  913. morning,

  914. but Jude

  915. has envisioned

  916. the sacrificial

  917. system in

  918. the temple

  919. where the

  920. high priests

  921. on behalf

  922. of the

  923. people only

  924. enter into

  925. the symbolic

  926. area that

  927. is where the

  928. presence of

  929. God truly

  930. is,

  931. only when

  932. their sins

  933. are removed

  934. and cleansed,

  935. where they are

  936. made blameless

  937. before God.

  938. Jude is

  939. saying here

  940. that we

  941. can stand

  942. before God.

  943. Why?

  944. Because we

  945. are blameless,

  946. we are

  947. blemishless,

  948. we are

  949. spotless,

  950. we are

  951. faultless.

  952. Why?

  953. Because Christ

  954. has taken

  955. our sin,

  956. he has

  957. atoned

  958. for our

  959. evil,

  960. he has

  961. made us

  962. pure and

  963. right before

  964. Almighty God.

  965. We can be

  966. blameless

  967. before God

  968. because we

  969. are now

  970. enveloped

  971. in Christ,

  972. we are

  973. in the

  974. blameless

  975. one.

  976. And

  977. therefore,

  978. we are

  979. able to

  980. stand

  981. before the

  982. presence of

  983. God without

  984. flinching,

  985. without being

  986. undone.

  987. In fact,

  988. if you look

  989. with me at

  990. the end of

  991. verse 24,

  992. sorry,

  993. yeah,

  994. verse 24,

  995. that we are

  996. in the

  997. presence of

  998. his glory

  999. with great

  1000. joy.

  1001. There's no

  1002. fear,

  1003. it is this

  1004. beautiful,

  1005. wonderful picture

  1006. of happiness

  1007. without end.

  1008. In fact,

  1009. it,

  1010. again,

  1011. Jude here,

  1012. an allusion

  1013. to the

  1014. ultimate

  1015. banquet that

  1016. will happen

  1017. at the end

  1018. of the age

  1019. where the

  1020. lamb who

  1021. was slain

  1022. before the

  1023. foundation of

  1024. the world

  1025. will be

  1026. united with

  1027. his bride,

  1028. the church,

  1029. and we

  1030. will dine

  1031. in this

  1032. incredible

  1033. marriage

  1034. supper

  1035. for all

  1036. of eternity.

  1037. And it's

  1038. all because

  1039. of what

  1040. Christ does.

  1041. We can't

  1042. get this

  1043. from within.

  1044. This is

  1045. something that

  1046. can only be

  1047. given to us

  1048. from without.

  1049. This is a bit

  1050. of a problem

  1051. though,

  1052. because I'm

  1053. sure many

  1054. of us,

  1055. whether it

  1056. be fitness

  1057. or wellness

  1058. influencers,

  1059. whether it's

  1060. blogs or

  1061. YouTube or

  1062. Instagram,

  1063. they,

  1064. at least some

  1065. of them,

  1066. suggest that

  1067. there is a

  1068. holistic purity

  1069. that is

  1070. available.

  1071. Work out

  1072. harder.

  1073. Meditate

  1074. harder.

  1075. Eat clean.

  1076. No processed

  1077. sugars.

  1078. No chocolate.

  1079. Organic.

  1080. Be kind.

  1081. Do more.

  1082. Think harder.

  1083. Say less.

  1084. Say more.

  1085. Set up

  1086. boundaries.

  1087. Remove

  1088. boundaries.

  1089. There's a

  1090. lot of

  1091. advice.

  1092. And that

  1093. advice sometimes

  1094. can be

  1095. excellent

  1096. advice.

  1097. I mean,

  1098. don't

  1099. unsubscribe

  1100. this afternoon.

  1101. But it's

  1102. a fallacy

  1103. to think

  1104. that true

  1105. holistic

  1106. purity

  1107. and righteousness

  1108. can be

  1109. achieved

  1110. by us

  1111. willing it,

  1112. by us

  1113. doing it,

  1114. by us

  1115. making

  1116. tweaks

  1117. and incorporating

  1118. new things

  1119. that we

  1120. have to

  1121. still do

  1122. that we

  1123. need to

  1124. exercise

  1125. greater

  1126. agency

  1127. and greater

  1128. willpower.

  1129. If the

  1130. problem was

  1131. simply a

  1132. lack that

  1133. could be

  1134. reformed or

  1135. something that

  1136. could be

  1137. acquired,

  1138. we would

  1139. have solved

  1140. many societal

  1141. ills and

  1142. solved the

  1143. issue of a

  1144. lack of

  1145. transcendence and

  1146. a lack of

  1147. meaning a

  1148. long time

  1149. ago.

  1150. Yet as we

  1151. progress,

  1152. we have this

  1153. annoying habit of

  1154. simultaneously

  1155. regressing.

  1156. not all

  1157. progress is

  1158. bad,

  1159. of course,

  1160. but all

  1161. progress that

  1162. seeks to

  1163. do what

  1164. only Christ

  1165. can do,

  1166. it is going

  1167. to be a

  1168. terrible,

  1169. terrible slave

  1170. master to

  1171. us.

  1172. Friends,

  1173. what Jude is

  1174. saying and

  1175. what we all

  1176. know deep

  1177. in our DNA

  1178. is that we

  1179. desire to

  1180. touch the

  1181. divine,

  1182. but we are

  1183. entirely unable

  1184. to do so by

  1185. our personal

  1186. and collective

  1187. strength.

  1188. Jude reminds

  1189. us that the

  1190. cross of

  1191. Christ is

  1192. the only

  1193. means by

  1194. which we

  1195. can know,

  1196. be with,

  1197. and enjoy

  1198. God.

  1199. We can

  1200. stand in

  1201. his presence

  1202. again without

  1203. flinching,

  1204. without being

  1205. undone,

  1206. with great

  1207. joy,

  1208. without being

  1209. overcome with

  1210. dread.

  1211. and it's

  1212. only because

  1213. of what

  1214. Christ does

  1215. for us

  1216. on our

  1217. behalf.

  1218. We embrace

  1219. by faith.

  1220. Jesus is

  1221. able.

  1222. He is able

  1223. to keep us

  1224. from stumbling.

  1225. He is able

  1226. to present

  1227. us blameless

  1228. in his presence

  1229. for eternity

  1230. with great

  1231. joy because

  1232. Jesus is

  1233. the only

  1234. God,

  1235. Savior,

  1236. and Lord.

  1237. And this

  1238. gets us to

  1239. our second

  1240. point.

  1241. If that is

  1242. what Jesus

  1243. does,

  1244. who,

  1245. who,

  1246. Jew will

  1247. remind us

  1248. of who

  1249. Jesus is.

  1250. Look with

  1251. me at

  1252. verse 25.

  1253. To the

  1254. only God,

  1255. our Savior,

  1256. through Jesus

  1257. Christ,

  1258. our Lord,

  1259. be glory,

  1260. majesty,

  1261. dominion,

  1262. authority,

  1263. before all

  1264. time,

  1265. and now,

  1266. and forever.

  1267. Amen.

  1268. Notice

  1269. first that

  1270. Jesus is

  1271. explicitly

  1272. declared to

  1273. be God.

  1274. Biblically

  1275. speaking,

  1276. you cannot

  1277. disentangle

  1278. God,

  1279. Savior,

  1280. and Lord.

  1281. They are

  1282. all titles

  1283. and terms

  1284. that describe

  1285. who God

  1286. is.

  1287. We can talk

  1288. about them

  1289. individually,

  1290. we can talk

  1291. about God

  1292. individually,

  1293. and what it

  1294. means to be a

  1295. Savior individually,

  1296. and what it

  1297. means to be a

  1298. Lord individually,

  1299. biblically speaking,

  1300. but we can't

  1301. talk about them

  1302. as if they are

  1303. separate from

  1304. one another.

  1305. God,

  1306. who is the

  1307. one who saves,

  1308. can do so

  1309. because of

  1310. his power

  1311. and rule.

  1312. And the

  1313. one who

  1314. rules with

  1315. ultimate power

  1316. is God.

  1317. So they're

  1318. all connected,

  1319. they all

  1320. feed into

  1321. one another.

  1322. It's like a

  1323. circuit in a

  1324. sense.

  1325. You can't

  1326. remove one

  1327. aspect of

  1328. God being

  1329. God or

  1330. Savior or

  1331. Lord and

  1332. expect God

  1333. to remain

  1334. God or

  1335. him to

  1336. remain Savior

  1337. or him to

  1338. remain Lord.

  1339. and again

  1340. we see

  1341. Jude

  1342. hammering

  1343. home

  1344. biblical

  1345. truths

  1346. with a

  1347. triplet.

  1348. It's kind

  1349. of his

  1350. thing,

  1351. but it's

  1352. helpful.

  1353. Jesus is

  1354. God,

  1355. Savior,

  1356. and Lord.

  1357. This is

  1358. the one

  1359. who keeps

  1360. you and

  1361. presents

  1362. you.

  1363. This is

  1364. the one

  1365. who will

  1366. not leave

  1367. you or

  1368. forsake

  1369. you.

  1370. This is

  1371. the one

  1372. who has

  1373. made a

  1374. way for

  1375. you,

  1376. who has

  1377. no business

  1378. being in

  1379. the presence

  1380. of God

  1381. to stand

  1382. in the

  1383. presence

  1384. of God.

  1385. When we

  1386. consider what

  1387. Jesus has

  1388. done and

  1389. who Christ

  1390. is,

  1391. can we

  1392. somehow

  1393. hold back

  1394. praise?

  1395. And I

  1396. mean really

  1397. understand this

  1398. truth goes

  1399. into us,

  1400. into our

  1401. souls.

  1402. It begins

  1403. to change

  1404. us.

  1405. The result

  1406. will be

  1407. praise.

  1408. This is a

  1409. helpful thing

  1410. why we

  1411. are about

  1412. not going

  1413. hardcore

  1414. with theological

  1415. language

  1416. necessarily,

  1417. although I

  1418. talked about

  1419. divine simplicity,

  1420. but why we're

  1421. very intentional

  1422. about doctrine

  1423. in this

  1424. church,

  1425. because right

  1426. theology

  1427. leads to

  1428. right doxology,

  1429. that is,

  1430. right understanding

  1431. of who God

  1432. is and what

  1433. he has done

  1434. and who we

  1435. are in

  1436. light of

  1437. that and

  1438. his creation

  1439. and his

  1440. ordering of

  1441. everything,

  1442. it leads to

  1443. a proper

  1444. expression of

  1445. praise.

  1446. We don't

  1447. worship Jesus

  1448. only,

  1449. or God the

  1450. Father only,

  1451. or the

  1452. Spirit only.

  1453. We worship

  1454. God the

  1455. Father,

  1456. God the

  1457. Son,

  1458. God the

  1459. Holy Spirit.

  1460. Jesus isn't

  1461. just a man,

  1462. nor is he

  1463. God,

  1464. but just in

  1465. the appearance

  1466. of a man,

  1467. he is fully

  1468. God and

  1469. fully man,

  1470. so we

  1471. worship the

  1472. incarnate

  1473. Son of

  1474. God.

  1475. It's important

  1476. that we get

  1477. our theology

  1478. right,

  1479. or at least

  1480. strive our

  1481. best by

  1482. God's

  1483. strength

  1484. together

  1485. to get

  1486. that right,

  1487. so that we

  1488. may praise

  1489. him

  1490. correctly,

  1491. and this

  1492. is what

  1493. Jude is

  1494. doing.

  1495. He has

  1496. described

  1497. what Jesus

  1498. does,

  1499. who Jesus

  1500. is,

  1501. and it

  1502. results in

  1503. this gushing

  1504. out of

  1505. praise to

  1506. Almighty God.

  1507. And what

  1508. does Jude

  1509. say here

  1510. in verse 25?

  1511. To the only

  1512. God our

  1513. Savior,

  1514. through Jesus

  1515. Christ our

  1516. Lord,

  1517. be glory,

  1518. majesty,

  1519. dominion,

  1520. authority.

  1521. You kind

  1522. of hear the

  1523. voice,

  1524. continue to

  1525. rise before

  1526. all time,

  1527. and now,

  1528. and forever.

  1529. This is

  1530. throughout the

  1531. Old Testament,

  1532. this doxology.

  1533. I mean,

  1534. it's in

  1535. maybe slightly

  1536. different form,

  1537. but King

  1538. David says

  1539. this,

  1540. the Apostle

  1541. Paul says

  1542. this,

  1543. Jude says

  1544. this,

  1545. all of

  1546. heaven

  1547. proclaims

  1548. it.

  1549. This is

  1550. what we'll

  1551. say before

  1552. Holy

  1553. Communion.

  1554. Holy,

  1555. Holy,

  1556. Holy,

  1557. Lord,

  1558. God of

  1559. hosts,

  1560. heaven and

  1561. earth are

  1562. full of

  1563. your glory.

  1564. continually

  1565. proclaiming

  1566. God's

  1567. goodness

  1568. and his

  1569. glory

  1570. and his

  1571. dominion

  1572. and his

  1573. majesty

  1574. forever

  1575. and ever

  1576. and ever.

  1577. You don't

  1578. have time to,

  1579. again,

  1580. double click

  1581. on glory,

  1582. majesty,

  1583. dominion,

  1584. and authority.

  1585. Worth your

  1586. time if you

  1587. have any

  1588. kind of

  1589. study tools

  1590. to do a

  1591. deep dive

  1592. into that.

  1593. But it

  1594. paints a

  1595. picture,

  1596. it communicates

  1597. to us

  1598. that Jesus

  1599. is all

  1600. powerful,

  1601. that he

  1602. is magnificent,

  1603. that he

  1604. is the

  1605. Lord of

  1606. all,

  1607. he's the

  1608. unchanging

  1609. creator God,

  1610. he is

  1611. worthy

  1612. of your

  1613. praise.

  1614. And it

  1615. also

  1616. communicates

  1617. to us

  1618. that even

  1619. when the

  1620. godlessness

  1621. that we

  1622. see and

  1623. that we

  1624. feel and

  1625. that we

  1626. lament in

  1627. our own

  1628. lives

  1629. seems to

  1630. grow and

  1631. threatens to

  1632. overtake us,

  1633. our Savior

  1634. and our

  1635. Lord and

  1636. our God,

  1637. he is

  1638. unchanging.

  1639. His grace

  1640. is not

  1641. emptied,

  1642. his dominion

  1643. is not

  1644. shaken,

  1645. his majesty

  1646. is not

  1647. tarnished,

  1648. that he is

  1649. the same

  1650. yesterday,

  1651. today,

  1652. and forever.

  1653. This is what

  1654. it says here,

  1655. before all

  1656. time and

  1657. now and

  1658. forever,

  1659. there was

  1660. never not

  1661. a time

  1662. when God

  1663. the Father,

  1664. God the

  1665. Son,

  1666. God the

  1667. Holy Spirit

  1668. did not

  1669. enjoy glory,

  1670. majesty,

  1671. dominion,

  1672. and authority.

  1673. Nothing

  1674. that the

  1675. world,

  1676. the flesh,

  1677. or the

  1678. devil can

  1679. do can

  1680. change that.

  1681. That's

  1682. called rock

  1683. solid truth,

  1684. that's a

  1685. foundation

  1686. that is

  1687. unshakable,

  1688. a truth

  1689. that is

  1690. worth

  1691. building

  1692. your life

  1693. upon,

  1694. and praising

  1695. God

  1696. forever.

  1697. So in

  1698. conclusion,

  1699. God has

  1700. promised that

  1701. we will be

  1702. with him

  1703. for eternity,

  1704. knowing full

  1705. well that

  1706. apart from

  1707. him,

  1708. we have no

  1709. business standing

  1710. in his

  1711. presence,

  1712. yet,

  1713. we will not

  1714. stand in

  1715. fear or

  1716. anxiety,

  1717. but blameless

  1718. and with

  1719. exceeding

  1720. great joy,

  1721. able to

  1722. bless his

  1723. name,

  1724. echoing

  1725. Jude 24 and

  1726. 25 for

  1727. eternity.

  1728. never

  1729. feeling like

  1730. we are

  1731. needlessly

  1732. in repetition,

  1733. that we are

  1734. just vainly

  1735. speaking words,

  1736. but forever

  1737. embracing the

  1738. goodness of

  1739. God in

  1740. praise.

  1741. Given that

  1742. life is

  1743. perilous,

  1744. and a long

  1745. obedience in

  1746. the same

  1747. direction is

  1748. fraught with

  1749. disobedience

  1750. and

  1751. considerations

  1752. of quitting,

  1753. verse 24

  1754. and 25,

  1755. they remind

  1756. us that

  1757. God,

  1758. our Savior,

  1759. our Lord,

  1760. Jesus himself,

  1761. he is able

  1762. to sustain

  1763. us,

  1764. and he

  1765. will finish

  1766. the work

  1767. that he

  1768. began,

  1769. and we

  1770. will be

  1771. with him

  1772. in glory

  1773. forever,

  1774. and that he

  1775. delights in

  1776. doing so.

  1777. the

  1778. marriage

  1779. supper of

  1780. the Lamb

  1781. is this

  1782. beautiful

  1783. picture in

  1784. John's

  1785. Revelation,

  1786. the last

  1787. book of

  1788. the Bible,

  1789. if you

  1790. turn one

  1791. page,

  1792. it's

  1793. Revelation

  1794. chapter

  1795. one,

  1796. and it's

  1797. this

  1798. beautiful

  1799. picture of

  1800. the

  1801. culmination

  1802. of

  1803. salvation,

  1804. where there

  1805. will be

  1806. endless

  1807. feasting

  1808. and joy

  1809. and excitement,

  1810. no more

  1811. tears of

  1812. sorrow,

  1813. it's

  1814. everything

  1815. that we

  1816. could hope

  1817. for,

  1818. everything

  1819. that will

  1820. give us

  1821. great meaning,

  1822. everything

  1823. that points

  1824. to all

  1825. of our

  1826. deepest

  1827. longings,

  1828. that is

  1829. our future

  1830. forever.

  1831. And this

  1832. morning,

  1833. as we gather

  1834. around the

  1835. table,

  1836. we, in a

  1837. sense,

  1838. rehearse that.

  1839. The table

  1840. is this

  1841. beautiful

  1842. reminder for

  1843. us that

  1844. Christ has

  1845. died for

  1846. our sins

  1847. and risen

  1848. again to

  1849. new life,

  1850. but it

  1851. also points

  1852. us to the

  1853. marriage supper

  1854. of the

  1855. Lamb,

  1856. that one

  1857. day we

  1858. will be

  1859. gathered

  1860. around a

  1861. table,

  1862. with each

  1863. other,

  1864. and with

  1865. Christ,

  1866. and it

  1867. is all

  1868. because he

  1869. is able

  1870. to keep

  1871. us from

  1872. stumbling,

  1873. and to

  1874. present us

  1875. blameless in

  1876. his presence

  1877. with glory

  1878. and joy.

  1879. Let us

  1880. pray.

  1881. Father in

  1882. heaven,

  1883. thank you

  1884. for
