  1. In preparation for this morning, I found a podcast, granted I didn't listen to it, but

  2. a podcast called Hope is a Verb.

  3. It seemed like a fairly prominent and popular podcast.

  4. It was the first one that came up when I typed in hope into the search in my podcast app.

  5. And what was really interesting about it was it was a series of talks by, I'm presuming,

  6. key leaders in various fields who had the solution for something that seemed hopeless.

  7. In one situation, it was the refugee crisis.

  8. In another situation, it was the climate.

  9. In another situation, it was the economy.

  10. In another situation, it was politics.

  11. Some of them were kind of a bit bizarre.

  12. It was on teaching birds how to fly.

  13. I didn't listen to it.

  14. I'm not sure.

  15. That might be a hopeless thing in some areas of the world.

  16. I'm not exactly sure.

  17. But nevertheless, the podcast, Hope is a Verb, what was interesting in this podcast was that

  18. it recognized that there was very big, insurmountable or seemingly insurmountable problems that had

  19. to be fixed.

  20. Hopelessness was not an option.

  21. But hopelessness is something that we all go through, that we feel very acutely depression

  22. at times.

  23. Maybe it's not at times.

  24. Maybe it's more frequent than we'd like to admit.

  25. What's interesting with this is that we live in, by far, the most affluent time in human

  26. history for the most amount of people.

  27. The most opportunities.

  28. The most monetary opportunities.

  29. To build ourselves up from nothing to something.

  30. To travel the world.

  31. To experience new things.

  32. There is no shortage of opportunity and experiences.

  33. And yet, even with all the opportunity to curate our own lives, we suffer from, collectively,

  34. we suffer from hopelessness.

  35. I'll go a step further.

  36. I would venture to guess that if I was to take a poll, that almost everybody, if not everybody

  37. in the room, has some kind of direct or a degree-removed connection to suicide.

  38. The very thing that is, in a sense, the culmination or the end of hopelessness.

  39. We have to ask a question then.

  40. Why do we need hope?

  41. Why is hope such a very important, dear, critical thing for us, for humans, for people in 2024,

  42. but people across the world, across time?

  43. Why do we need hope?

  44. And if we need it so dearly, what is the nature of such hope?

  45. And how can we find an enduring hope?

  46. Because surely, if hopelessness is something that is a huge, monumental problem,

  47. we don't want to get a hope that lasts for a moment or a few months until hopelessness finds

  48. its way back into our lives.

  49. We want a hope that is not fragile but resilient, a hope that is enduring.

  50. If you were away last week or if you're visiting this morning, we have begun a series in the first epistle

  51. or letter written by the Apostle Peter.

  52. It's a letter written to equip us as God's people to live as sojourners or exiles or resident aliens

  53. in this world, in Ottawa.

  54. That call does not mean we are to live as people just passing through,

  55. without care or concern with the situation or people or city around us,

  56. but rather we are called as sojourners to be people who work and strive to see the good news of the gospel

  57. transform our city in small ways and large ways.

  58. As the grace and peace that is given to us in the gospel multiplies in our lives,

  59. Peter tells us that we are then to extend it out.

  60. If you remember last week, we were only in two verses, verses 1 and 2,

  61. and the end of verse 2 ended like this,

  62. May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

  63. So our section today, verses 3 to 12,

  64. is in the original language one sentence,

  65. and it explains and expands this idea of grace and peace being multiplied.

  66. And it loudly proclaims there is such a thing as unshakable hope,

  67. anti-fragile hope, resilient hope, enduring hope.

  68. And that hope is only found in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

  69. This unshakable hope is expressed in three ways.

  70. Peter maps it out in three kind of movements in our section in verses 3 to 12.

  71. The first is an imperishable inheritance.

  72. The second is a joyful suffering.

  73. And then finally, it's an eternal glory.

  74. An imperishable inheritance, a joyful suffering,

  75. and an eternal glory.

  76. So first, an imperishable inheritance.

  77. A bit too much alliteration, I think.

  78. Verse 3 to 5.

  79. Look with me.

  80. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  81. I'll just pause here.

  82. Remember, this is one sentence, verses 3 to 12,

  83. in the original language.

  84. I was saying to Christine last night,

  85. before we were heading to bed,

  86. that even though this is written in Greek,

  87. it is written by Peter, who was a Jew.

  88. And you almost get the sense that

  89. his first century Semitism is coming out.

  90. It's bursting forth.

  91. There's an excitement.

  92. It's like he can't stop himself glorifying God.

  93. It gets louder and louder and louder.

  94. I'm not going to read it that way.

  95. But you get this sense, this idea,

  96. that Peter is just jazzed.

  97. He is jacked up.

  98. This is a hopeful man.

  99. This is an excited man.

  100. This is a man that knows, has seen Christ,

  101. and it's bursting out of him.

  102. So I'm going to read it in a regular tone.

  103. But hear this excitement and joy

  104. that Peter is writing with.

  105. Blessed be the God and Father

  106. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  107. According to his great mercy,

  108. he has caused us to be born again

  109. to a living hope

  110. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  111. from the dead,

  112. to an inheritance that is imperishable,

  113. undefiled and unfading,

  114. kept in heaven for you,

  115. who by God's power are being guarded

  116. through faith for a salvation

  117. ready to be revealed in the last time.

  118. Peter continues his allusions

  119. to the Old Testament

  120. when he uses this term inheritance.

  121. Last week, we took a look

  122. in verses 1 and 2

  123. about how Peter is,

  124. he's using Old Testament terms

  125. that we could double-click

  126. or think of them as,

  127. they have a hyperlink on them

  128. and that if we were to click it,

  129. we would see a whole page

  130. with Bible verses

  131. pointing to various stories

  132. in the scriptures.

  133. So in verse 1, for instance,

  134. Peter is talking about

  135. the elect exiles of the dispersion.

  136. We found out that

  137. he is really referring back

  138. to this time in Israel's history

  139. where they were scattered

  140. across the known world

  141. because of their unfaithfulness

  142. with God.

  143. A couple other allusions

  144. that I won't get into,

  145. but he's doing the same thing

  146. in the text today.

  147. And he is doing that

  148. with the term inheritance.

  149. What do I mean?

  150. God promised the Israelites

  151. the land of Canaan,

  152. which would be the land of Israel,

  153. as an inheritance

  154. with a lasting right to ownership.

  155. He promised them.

  156. It goes back to Abraham

  157. in Genesis 13

  158. and it continues on

  159. in the story of Abraham

  160. and the story of Israel

  161. all throughout Genesis,

  162. all throughout the Old Testament.

  163. It was a promise

  164. that Israel gripped tight

  165. as they wandered

  166. through the desert

  167. after God saved them

  168. from Egyptian slavery,

  169. that they were going

  170. into the promised land.

  171. It was theirs.

  172. They had a home,

  173. but really,

  174. God was not just giving them

  175. a physical place to live.

  176. He was giving them Himself.

  177. That yes,

  178. they had an inheritance

  179. of the land,

  180. but really it was

  181. the inheritance

  182. that God would be their God

  183. and that they would be His people

  184. and that there was

  185. this dynamic covenant friendship,

  186. love, relationship

  187. that's described

  188. in some ways as a father

  189. to a son,

  190. as in other ways

  191. like a husband to a wife,

  192. but this deep personal connection

  193. and that was Israel's inheritance.

  194. However, Israel neglected that.

  195. They forgot that.

  196. They saw the land

  197. as the inheritance alone.

  198. The land's important.

  199. We're not going to get into the land

  200. this morning,

  201. but the inheritance given to Israel

  202. from their perspective

  203. was the land

  204. and they forgot about God.

  205. They forgot about their true inheritance

  206. and so their inheritance,

  207. the land of Israel,

  208. Israel was destroyed,

  209. was defiled,

  210. and faded.

  211. Not because God's promises

  212. were shaky,

  213. but because Israel

  214. was unfaithful

  215. to what their inheritance

  216. pointed to,

  217. which was God Himself.

  218. So God gave them over

  219. to their enemies.

  220. Reveal something very tragic

  221. about human nature.

  222. We desire life

  223. and life abundantly,

  224. but we are fine

  225. to not have the life giver.

  226. We desire a utopia,

  227. a heavenly existence,

  228. but not the purity

  229. and righteousness needed

  230. to enter into

  231. such a blessed state.

  232. We want a kingdom

  233. that is strong and mighty,

  234. but we're fine

  235. to not have the king.

  236. We have visions

  237. of a heavenly life,

  238. but we want to define

  239. sainthood.

  240. We do not bring

  241. the culture of heaven

  242. to earth,

  243. rather we try to baptize

  244. the culture of earth

  245. to seem heavenly,

  246. and friends,

  247. such things

  248. cannot be done.

  249. In short,

  250. we do not want

  251. to submit our lives

  252. to our maker.

  253. Rather,

  254. we want to become

  255. the creator

  256. and maker

  257. and king

  258. and God Himself.

  259. Peter makes it

  260. very clear

  261. that if we are

  262. to live faithfully

  263. in Ottawa,

  264. we must understand

  265. that we are sojourners

  266. and resident aliens,

  267. that we will live

  268. as people

  269. with a different

  270. value system

  271. because we have

  272. an inheritance

  273. of God Himself.

  274. We bend our knee

  275. to the life giver,

  276. the perfect one,

  277. the heavenly Father,

  278. the King of heaven

  279. and earth.

  280. To do otherwise

  281. is to fall

  282. into the same

  283. sinful problems

  284. that Israel did.

  285. Unfaithfulness

  286. to our God.

  287. Remember,

  288. Israel failed

  289. to do this,

  290. to recognize God

  291. as their true inheritance

  292. because they put

  293. their hope

  294. in and saw

  295. their inheritance

  296. in the gift

  297. and not the giver.

  298. Peter is telling us

  299. that our living hope

  300. is on the basis

  301. of the resurrection

  302. of Christ Himself.

  303. Christ who rose

  304. from the dead

  305. and nothing else.

  306. When we become

  307. Christians

  308. through faith

  309. in the risen Messiah,

  310. we become united

  311. to Christ.

  312. We become a part

  313. of His mystical body,

  314. the church,

  315. but in a very,

  316. very, very real way,

  317. a part of Him.

  318. We become united

  319. to Christ.

  320. so much so

  321. that the Scriptures

  322. say that His destiny

  323. becomes ours,

  324. that the glory

  325. that He enjoys

  326. we get to share in.

  327. We become

  328. people that get

  329. to enter

  330. into His presence

  331. forever.

  332. He rises

  333. from the grave

  334. so that death

  335. doesn't have

  336. the final word.

  337. The Scriptures

  338. say so will we.

  339. He sits

  340. at the right hand

  341. of the Father

  342. forever to,

  343. forever enjoying

  344. the fellowship

  345. and presence

  346. of the one true God.

  347. So do we.

  348. Because Christ

  349. has done this

  350. and because we are

  351. united to Him,

  352. we can be sure

  353. that we will enjoy

  354. this as well.

  355. So then,

  356. our inheritance

  357. is never the things

  358. that God gives us,

  359. the blessings

  360. in this life,

  361. although they are

  362. very important

  363. and not to be

  364. discarded or ignored.

  365. But our true inheritance

  366. is Jesus Himself.

  367. And everything He gives us

  368. is to help us

  369. to understand

  370. His love towards us

  371. and understand

  372. that He is equipping us

  373. and building us up

  374. to do the things

  375. that He's called us

  376. to do.

  377. So our inheritance

  378. is not in things

  379. that can be defiled,

  380. not in things

  381. that can perish

  382. or things that can fade,

  383. but in the one true living,

  384. ever powerful,

  385. always strong,

  386. victory is His forever God.

  387. And that means

  388. our inheritance,

  389. we can be sure,

  390. will never perish,

  391. will never be defiled,

  392. will never fade.

  393. So all of a sudden,

  394. if our hope is in that God,

  395. our hope isn't subject

  396. to the whims

  397. and fortunes

  398. of this world.

  399. It is foundational

  400. that we understand

  401. that our hope,

  402. if it's in Christ,

  403. is rock solid.

  404. It's an inheritance

  405. that is imperishable.

  406. And it's in the future,

  407. and it's kept for us

  408. to enjoy now in part,

  409. but it's kept in the future

  410. for when Christ returns.

  411. It says this

  412. in verses 5 and 6.

  413. Who by God's power

  414. are being guarded

  415. through faith

  416. for salvation,

  417. ready to be revealed

  418. in the last time.

  419. We have a true

  420. and future inheritance,

  421. for we have Christ Jesus,

  422. and He gives us

  423. His indwelling Holy Spirit

  424. and the ongoing gift

  425. of active faith

  426. in our lives.

  427. And that's the bit

  428. we see in verse 5 here.

  429. So that our inheritance

  430. is guarded

  431. through faith.

  432. That is,

  433. God gives us

  434. strength to believe in Him

  435. and to trust in Him

  436. so that we will endure.

  437. So it's not that

  438. God just saves us

  439. so that we can trip up

  440. and fail

  441. and lose our salvation

  442. and constantly try

  443. to get it back

  444. and lose it

  445. and get it back

  446. and lose it.

  447. But God,

  448. if we are truly His,

  449. if we are truly in Christ,

  450. He empowers us

  451. with His Holy Spirit

  452. and with the gift of faith

  453. to trust in Him

  454. that we will

  455. inherit the things

  456. that are kept for us

  457. in the future.

  458. And this faith,

  459. how does He help us?

  460. How does He grow our faith?

  461. How does He bolster our faith?

  462. All too often,

  463. it is through trials

  464. and suffering.

  465. And it seems more bleak

  466. than hopeful,

  467. but believe me,

  468. this suffering

  469. and the trials

  470. that God uses

  471. to strengthen our faith,

  472. it doesn't lead to despair

  473. but to true joy.

  474. And this brings us

  475. to our next point,

  476. a joyful suffering.

  477. Verses 6 to 9.

  478. Look with me.

  479. Starting in verse 6.

  480. In this you rejoice,

  481. though now for a little while

  482. if necessary,

  483. you have been grieved

  484. by various trials,

  485. so that the tested

  486. genuineness of your faith

  487. more precious than gold

  488. that perishes

  489. though it is tested by fire

  490. may be found

  491. to result in praise

  492. and glory

  493. and honor

  494. at the revelation

  495. of Jesus Christ.

  496. Though you have not seen Him,

  497. you love Him.

  498. Though you do not

  499. now see Him,

  500. you believe in Him

  501. and rejoice with joy

  502. that is inexpressible

  503. and filled with glory

  504. obtaining

  505. the outcome of your faith,

  506. the salvation

  507. of your souls.

  508. If being in Christ

  509. is so great

  510. and our inheritance

  511. of heaven

  512. can be experienced

  513. in part now,

  514. here on earth,

  515. why are we subject

  516. to such suffering?

  517. Why?

  518. How is this coherent

  519. with an unshakable hope?

  520. let alone a joy

  521. that is inexpressible.

  522. If you have suffered

  523. in a real way,

  524. whether it's a loss

  525. of somebody,

  526. whether it is persecution

  527. for doing something

  528. that God has called you

  529. to do,

  530. if you have suffered,

  531. it is hard

  532. to feel joyful.

  533. It is hard

  534. to be excited,

  535. to think about,

  536. man,

  537. this is a really

  538. hopeful situation.

  539. often times

  540. we try to

  541. avoid

  542. and forget

  543. or move on

  544. as quickly as possible

  545. from our suffering

  546. and our trials

  547. and yet,

  548. Peter here is saying,

  549. listen,

  550. with the trials

  551. comes joy,

  552. comes inexpressible joy

  553. and it is

  554. something that is

  555. a part of this

  556. unbreakable hope

  557. that is yours

  558. in Jesus.

  559. Jesus.

  560. Our faith is in Christ.

  561. He is our Savior.

  562. He is our Lord.

  563. We are saved by Him,

  564. through Him,

  565. and for Him.

  566. He is the object

  567. of our faith.

  568. But how do we know

  569. that we are really

  570. trusting Him?

  571. How do we know

  572. if our faith

  573. isn't really

  574. in something else?

  575. You see,

  576. adversities have

  577. a very profound

  578. way of making

  579. our faith known

  580. as legitimate

  581. or illegitimate.

  582. For it shakes

  583. all that can be shaken

  584. so that the things

  585. that cannot be shaken

  586. may remain.

  587. This is the end

  588. of Hebrews 12,

  589. the wonderful chapter

  590. in Hebrews

  591. on faith.

  592. Trials and sufferings

  593. are ways of testing

  594. the sturdiness

  595. and the trustworthiness

  596. of things.

  597. An earthquake

  598. shakes the very foundation

  599. of a structure,

  600. but if that structure

  601. is integral

  602. and strong,

  603. it will hold.

  604. Some of you

  605. who have been

  606. with us

  607. from the very beginning

  608. of the church plan,

  609. you'll remember

  610. Sean and Amy Turner.

  611. They were with us

  612. for a season.

  613. Sean was a padre

  614. in the armed forces

  615. and also a pastor.

  616. They left to

  617. pastor a church

  618. in West Guilford,

  619. which is in the Muskokas.

  620. Lovely couple.

  621. But one of the things,

  622. Sean,

  623. who is a padre,

  624. he did a tour,

  625. a humanitarian tour

  626. in Haiti

  627. after the earthquake.

  628. And he saw

  629. how

  630. the buildings

  631. were essentially,

  632. he described them

  633. as paper mache.

  634. They had no foundation.

  635. They were rickety.

  636. They were made

  637. with very,

  638. very poor quality materials.

  639. And when the earthquake

  640. hit,

  641. everything crumbled.

  642. And people died.

  643. A lot of people died.

  644. And that really

  645. shook Sean up.

  646. He struggled

  647. with seeing

  648. the lack of care

  649. for human life.

  650. I mean,

  651. part of it is

  652. Haiti's absolutely

  653. dirt poor.

  654. But nevertheless,

  655. these paper mache

  656. homes

  657. just crumbled

  658. as soon as

  659. adversity came

  660. and as soon as

  661. these earthquakes

  662. shook them up.

  663. You see,

  664. if we put our faith

  665. in fragile things,

  666. even though they

  667. appear sturdy,

  668. soon as trials come,

  669. the things that we

  670. have put our hope

  671. in will fail us

  672. and we will be

  673. left wanting.

  674. We will be

  675. searching and

  676. grasping for

  677. something that

  678. will give us

  679. stability.

  680. And we might

  681. find stability

  682. in something that

  683. might be just

  684. a degree or two

  685. stronger than the

  686. thing that just

  687. crumbled,

  688. but is bound

  689. to crumble

  690. with the next

  691. trial and

  692. temptation.

  693. The question

  694. that Peter

  695. asks us

  696. is,

  697. what is your

  698. hope in?

  699. What is your

  700. hope in?

  701. What is my

  702. hope in?

  703. But really,

  704. the question is,

  705. who is your

  706. hope in?

  707. Christ wants

  708. to purify

  709. your faith

  710. because it is

  711. the gift

  712. that he has

  713. given you

  714. so that you

  715. will trust in

  716. him,

  717. that you

  718. will endure

  719. so that you

  720. will receive

  721. your inheritance

  722. that is

  723. imperishable.

  724. So what

  725. does he do?

  726. He allows

  727. trials and

  728. sufferings and

  729. temptations to

  730. happen in your

  731. lives,

  732. not to punish

  733. you or to

  734. hurt you,

  735. but to purify

  736. you,

  737. to show you

  738. that this area

  739. is weak.

  740. so come to

  741. me.

  742. You're trusting

  743. in your

  744. money,

  745. so we're

  746. going to

  747. have you

  748. struggle with

  749. finances for

  750. a season,

  751. so you can

  752. trust in me.

  753. You are

  754. putting all

  755. of your

  756. hope in

  757. your family,

  758. this is your

  759. prized possession,

  760. even over

  761. Christ.

  762. Tragedy hits

  763. or a struggle

  764. happens,

  765. and you

  766. realize that

  767. my faith is

  768. not in

  769. Christ,

  770. so he

  771. helps us.

  772. And it's

  773. not some

  774. sadistic

  775. God who

  776. is trying

  777. to punish

  778. you,

  779. but he

  780. wants to

  781. purify you

  782. and help

  783. you.

  784. Why?

  785. So that you

  786. will have

  787. joy.

  788. Because even

  789. the best

  790. gifts in

  791. this life,

  792. if they are

  793. treated as if

  794. they are the

  795. gift giver

  796. themselves,

  797. will not bring

  798. us complete

  799. and ultimate

  800. and godly

  801. joy.

  802. And they

  803. will not

  804. stand up

  805. under the

  806. trials and

  807. the adversity

  808. of life.

  809. Our

  810. suffering is

  811. turned to

  812. joy because

  813. our faith is

  814. put in the

  815. rock-solid

  816. truth of

  817. the Savior

  818. who, for

  819. the joy set

  820. before him,

  821. endured the

  822. cross.

  823. We read in

  824. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  825. chapter 2,

  826. for our

  827. salvation he

  828. endured the

  829. cross.

  830. Why?

  831. Because he

  832. loves us.

  833. He took

  834. upon himself

  835. our punishment

  836. so that we

  837. wouldn't have

  838. to taste it.

  839. And that

  840. love to us,

  841. expressed in

  842. the joy of

  843. laying down

  844. his life,

  845. will result

  846. in our

  847. joy as

  848. we then

  849. suffer for

  850. him.

  851. That he

  852. has bought

  853. our lives

  854. at the

  855. expense of

  856. his very

  857. life,

  858. at the

  859. expense of

  860. his spilt

  861. blood.

  862. So then

  863. we are

  864. his,

  865. and when

  866. we suffer

  867. rightly for

  868. Christ,

  869. this is not

  870. to get in

  871. his good

  872. graces,

  873. but it's

  874. of course

  875. to purify

  876. our faith,

  877. but it's

  878. also,

  879. also in

  880. addition to

  881. that,

  882. a tribute

  883. to him.

  884. What gift

  885. can we

  886. give God

  887. that he

  888. doesn't

  889. already have?

  890. The answer

  891. is nothing,

  892. but what do

  893. we give

  894. him?

  895. We give

  896. him

  897. ourselves.

  898. We say

  899. thank you

  900. Lord for

  901. what you

  902. have done.

  903. I am

  904. your servant,

  905. I am

  906. here.

  907. I am

  908. here.

  909. Our

  910. faith is

  911. proven

  912. true,

  913. and it

  914. is refined

  915. as we

  916. suffer

  917. rightly

  918. for

  919. Christ,

  920. resulting

  921. in our

  922. love of

  923. him,

  924. and the

  925. eternal

  926. joy that

  927. he gives

  928. us,

  929. even though

  930. we have

  931. yet to

  932. see him.

  933. And that's

  934. the bit

  935. here in

  936. verses

  937. 8 and

  938. 9.

  939. Though you

  940. have not

  941. seen him,

  942. you love

  943. him.

  944. Though you

  945. do not

  946. now see

  947. him,

  948. you believe

  949. in him

  950. and rejoice

  951. with joy

  952. that is

  953. inexpressible

  954. and filled

  955. with glory,

  956. we can

  957. be sure

  958. that we

  959. will obtain

  960. the outcome

  961. of our

  962. faith,

  963. especially

  964. as it

  965. is God

  966. who gives

  967. us the

  968. faith,

  969. and God

  970. who is

  971. refining

  972. us in

  973. that faith,

  974. and the

  975. promise is

  976. salvation

  977. of our

  978. souls.

  979. That is

  980. the goal

  981. of our

  982. faith,

  983. that we

  984. would trust

  985. in the

  986. one who

  987. laid down

  988. his life

  989. for us

  990. and kept

  991. our

  992. unshakable

  993. inheritance

  994. for us

  995. to the

  996. end of

  997. the age.

  998. And that

  999. does something

  1000. remarkable,

  1001. something that

  1002. is

  1003. not

  1004. found

  1005. in our

  1006. best

  1007. thought

  1008. leaders,

  1009. our best

  1010. gurus,

  1011. our best

  1012. philosophies,

  1013. that takes

  1014. our

  1015. suffering

  1016. and makes

  1017. it not

  1018. suffering

  1019. so that

  1020. the end

  1021. of suffering

  1022. is suffering

  1023. and death,

  1024. but rather

  1025. that it

  1026. transforms

  1027. suffering

  1028. into glory.

  1029. It means

  1030. that suffering

  1031. is no longer

  1032. vain if we

  1033. suffer for

  1034. Christ.

  1035. It will

  1036. result in

  1037. something

  1038. incredible,

  1039. the salvation

  1040. of our

  1041. souls.

  1042. So how

  1043. will that

  1044. come to

  1045. be?

  1046. Through the

  1047. suffering of

  1048. Christ himself

  1049. that would

  1050. lead to his

  1051. eternal glory.

  1052. This is the

  1053. final point.

  1054. Look with

  1055. me at

  1056. our

  1057. unshakable

  1058. hope in

  1059. verses 10

  1060. to 12.

  1061. Concerning

  1062. this salvation,

  1063. the prophets

  1064. who prophesied

  1065. about the

  1066. grace that

  1067. was to be

  1068. yours searched

  1069. and inquired

  1070. carefully,

  1071. inquiring what

  1072. person or

  1073. time the

  1074. spirit of

  1075. Christ in

  1076. them was

  1077. indicating when

  1078. he predicted

  1079. the sufferings

  1080. of Christ and

  1081. the subsequent

  1082. glories.

  1083. It was revealed

  1084. to them that

  1085. they were

  1086. serving not

  1087. themselves,

  1088. but you,

  1089. that is us,

  1090. in the things

  1091. that have now

  1092. been announced

  1093. to you through

  1094. those who

  1095. preach the

  1096. good news to

  1097. you by the

  1098. Holy Spirit

  1099. sent from

  1100. heaven,

  1101. things into

  1102. which angels

  1103. long to

  1104. look.

  1105. this passage

  1106. tells us

  1107. that the

  1108. entirety of

  1109. scripture points

  1110. to Christ,

  1111. all of it.

  1112. All of

  1113. scripture points

  1114. to Jesus,

  1115. the Old

  1116. Testament,

  1117. the writings,

  1118. the law,

  1119. the prophets,

  1120. all find

  1121. their promise

  1122. in the

  1123. fulfillment

  1124. in the

  1125. gospel of

  1126. Christ,

  1127. which is

  1128. God's

  1129. glory.

  1130. But if

  1131. you notice

  1132. that here

  1133. in verse

  1134. 10 and

  1135. 11,

  1136. suffering

  1137. has to

  1138. precede

  1139. glory,

  1140. that there

  1141. is no

  1142. glory without

  1143. suffering.

  1144. There is

  1145. no other

  1146. way.

  1147. In a few

  1148. months,

  1149. most of

  1150. us,

  1151. I think,

  1152. will tune

  1153. in to the

  1154. Olympics in

  1155. Paris,

  1156. and we

  1157. will see

  1158. unbelievable

  1159. athletes that

  1160. have given

  1161. their lives

  1162. to their

  1163. craft,

  1164. and some

  1165. will stand

  1166. upon the

  1167. podium,

  1168. hopefully

  1169. they're

  1170. singing

  1171. O Canada

  1172. with the

  1173. gold around

  1174. their neck,

  1175. and they

  1176. will receive

  1177. glory,

  1178. but none

  1179. of them

  1180. that receive

  1181. that glory

  1182. will be on

  1183. the podium

  1184. without going

  1185. through suffering

  1186. beforehand,

  1187. inflicting

  1188. upon their

  1189. body pain

  1190. two a days,

  1191. maybe three

  1192. a days,

  1193. a hardcore

  1194. diet,

  1195. aching

  1196. muscles,

  1197. treatments,

  1198. all for

  1199. what?

  1200. For glory.

  1201. Regardless

  1202. of what it

  1203. is,

  1204. glory does

  1205. not precede

  1206. suffering.

  1207. Suffering

  1208. precedes

  1209. glory.

  1210. This is a

  1211. very good

  1212. corrective for

  1213. us.

  1214. We live in

  1215. an instant

  1216. gratification

  1217. culture.

  1218. it demands

  1219. glory without

  1220. sacrifice and

  1221. pain.

  1222. We don't

  1223. want to

  1224. wait.

  1225. We don't

  1226. want to

  1227. work super

  1228. hard,

  1229. or if we

  1230. work super

  1231. hard,

  1232. we better

  1233. get what

  1234. we deserve.

  1235. But by

  1236. and large,

  1237. we avoid

  1238. sacrifice and

  1239. pain.

  1240. And yet,

  1241. the scripture

  1242. tells us that

  1243. the entirety of

  1244. the Old

  1245. Testament points

  1246. to Jesus

  1247. and his

  1248. glory,

  1249. glory,

  1250. but that

  1251. there is

  1252. no possible

  1253. way for

  1254. him to

  1255. enjoy his

  1256. glory without

  1257. sacrifice.

  1258. That means

  1259. there is no

  1260. possible way

  1261. for us to

  1262. be made

  1263. right with

  1264. God,

  1265. to have

  1266. the curse

  1267. of Eden

  1268. reversed,

  1269. except for

  1270. Jesus to be

  1271. sacrificed upon

  1272. the cross.

  1273. There is no

  1274. other way.

  1275. There is no

  1276. other possible

  1277. scenario where

  1278. God, the

  1279. Son of

  1280. God,

  1281. could achieve

  1282. our salvation

  1283. apart from

  1284. him taking

  1285. on human

  1286. flesh and

  1287. living a

  1288. sinless life

  1289. yet being

  1290. tempted fully

  1291. in every way

  1292. that we are

  1293. tempted yet

  1294. without sin

  1295. to die on

  1296. a cross as

  1297. a criminal

  1298. even though

  1299. he committed

  1300. no crime,

  1301. to die in

  1302. our place,

  1303. to be buried,

  1304. to rise again

  1305. after three

  1306. days,

  1307. to appear

  1308. to many,

  1309. to ascend

  1310. into heaven,

  1311. to be

  1312. glorified,

  1313. the name

  1314. above all

  1315. names,

  1316. at the name

  1317. of Jesus

  1318. every knee

  1319. will bow,

  1320. every tongue

  1321. will confess

  1322. that he is

  1323. Lord of all.

  1324. There is no

  1325. other scenario

  1326. that that could

  1327. have happened

  1328. apart from

  1329. Jesus'

  1330. suffering.

  1331. And all

  1332. of a sudden

  1333. we begin

  1334. to see

  1335. that our

  1336. hope

  1337. that is

  1338. unshakable,

  1339. that we

  1340. experience

  1341. is rooted

  1342. in suffering.

  1343. And we

  1344. experience a

  1345. bit of that,

  1346. of course,

  1347. and it's

  1348. the trials

  1349. that make

  1350. our faith

  1351. strong,

  1352. it's our

  1353. tribute

  1354. given to

  1355. God,

  1356. but ultimately,

  1357. ultimately,

  1358. our unshakable

  1359. hope

  1360. is in the

  1361. suffering

  1362. and death

  1363. and then

  1364. resurrection of

  1365. Christ.

  1366. and it

  1367. is done.

  1368. Jesus

  1369. did it

  1370. all.

  1371. The way

  1372. he suffered,

  1373. the way

  1374. he died,

  1375. he defeated

  1376. death once

  1377. and for all.

  1378. So we

  1379. put our

  1380. faith in

  1381. that,

  1382. we can be

  1383. sure that

  1384. there wasn't

  1385. a corner

  1386. of the

  1387. legions

  1388. upon the

  1389. armies,

  1390. the battalions

  1391. of sin

  1392. and evil

  1393. and death,

  1394. some corner

  1395. in some

  1396. part of

  1397. the world

  1398. or the

  1399. galaxy

  1400. that wasn't

  1401. conquered,

  1402. that wasn't

  1403. destroyed,

  1404. that wasn't

  1405. defeated.

  1406. That there's

  1407. no part

  1408. of our

  1409. lives

  1410. that is

  1411. just too

  1412. much for

  1413. Jesus

  1414. to fix.

  1415. That there's

  1416. no part

  1417. in this

  1418. church,

  1419. no sin

  1420. that we

  1421. have committed,

  1422. no problem

  1423. too great

  1424. that Christ

  1425. hasn't overcome.

  1426. when we

  1427. talk about

  1428. an unshakable

  1429. hope,

  1430. we are

  1431. talking about

  1432. a person

  1433. and that

  1434. person is

  1435. Jesus

  1436. Christ.

  1437. Our

  1438. suffering,

  1439. therefore,

  1440. is nothing

  1441. compared to

  1442. his suffering.

  1443. He has

  1444. taken suffering,

  1445. he has taken

  1446. death,

  1447. he has taken

  1448. evil and he

  1449. has turned it

  1450. upside down so

  1451. that the end

  1452. isn't death

  1453. or the

  1454. complete utter

  1455. blackness,

  1456. but rather

  1457. life and

  1458. life to

  1459. its full.

  1460. Friends,

  1461. our hope is

  1462. unshakable

  1463. because it's

  1464. in Christ,

  1465. for he

  1466. promises an

  1467. inheritance

  1468. that is

  1469. imperishable,

  1470. undefiled,

  1471. unfaded.

  1472. Our hope

  1473. is unshakable

  1474. because Christ

  1475. allows trials

  1476. to purify

  1477. our faith

  1478. so that we

  1479. can trust

  1480. in him

  1481. resulting

  1482. in true

  1483. joy.

  1484. our hope

  1485. is unshakable

  1486. because Christ

  1487. suffered so

  1488. that he would

  1489. be eternally

  1490. glorified,

  1491. opening up the

  1492. door for us

  1493. to enjoy

  1494. eternal glory.

  1495. Friends,

  1496. as we

  1497. journey through

  1498. 1 Peter,

  1499. but also

  1500. journey as

  1501. resident aliens,

  1502. as exiles,

  1503. as sojourners

  1504. here in Ottawa,

  1505. let us never

  1506. forget where

  1507. our hope is.

  1508. The trials,

  1509. temptations,

  1510. the fury

  1511. of hell

  1512. can come

  1513. at us,

  1514. but because

  1515. our hope

  1516. is in Christ,

  1517. it is unshakable.

  1518. Let's pray.

  1519. Heavenly Father,

  1520. thank you

  1521. for your

  1522. son.

  1523. Thank you

  1524. that his

  1525. gospel

  1526. is

  1527. 100%

  1528. good news,

  1529. that his

  1530. victory

  1531. was 100%

  1532. of victory

  1533. over everything

  1534. that was evil

  1535. and sinful

  1536. and that

  1537. would cause

  1538. death and

  1539. that we

  1540. can put

  1541. our hope

  1542. in him

  1543. and that

  1544. he won't

  1545. let us

  1546. down,

  1547. he won't

  1548. prove false,

  1549. he won't

  1550. perish again.

  1551. Lord,

  1552. help us to

  1553. be people

  1554. that walk

  1555. in that

  1556. reality.

  1557. Lord,

  1558. we will

  1559. undoubtedly

  1560. falter,

  1561. our faith

  1562. will get

  1563. shaky,

  1564. but we look

  1565. to you to

  1566. strengthen

  1567. our weak

  1568. knees,

  1569. so to

  1570. speak,

  1571. so that

  1572. we can

  1573. walk out

  1574. this life

  1575. and eventually

  1576. enjoy the

  1577. outcome of

  1578. our faith,

  1579. the salvation

  1580. of our souls.

  1581. We pray this

  1582. in Christ's

  1583. name.

  1584. Amen.
