  1. The church has a perpetual problem.

  2. This is the problem.

  3. God, the church cries out to God,

  4. God acts, extending mercy,

  5. the people are restored,

  6. and then their fervor dies,

  7. and the church ceases to look like the church

  8. and more like the culture.

  9. And then the church gets to a spot

  10. where then they cry out to God

  11. for restoration.

  12. In his kindness, he extends mercy.

  13. They get restored, and so on and so forth,

  14. and so on and so forth.

  15. It's the history of the church.

  16. It's the history of God's people.

  17. Before I continue on,

  18. let's ask the Lord's blessing,

  19. and then we'll continue in God's word.

  20. Lord, we ask that you will make us people

  21. of the book,

  22. that we would rest under your truth.

  23. We would submit to it, bend a knee to it.

  24. Father in heaven,

  25. as we explore what it means

  26. to be a part of your people, the church,

  27. help us to have tender hearts

  28. to hear what you have to say to us this morning.

  29. In Jesus' name, amen.

  30. I bring up this story

  31. as we were in our last psalm of the summer,

  32. because this psalm,

  33. Psalm 85,

  34. it's a lament psalm,

  35. but at its core,

  36. it's a psalm

  37. of crying out to God

  38. for renewal and restoration,

  39. crying out to God

  40. to do what only he can do

  41. and what he delights in doing.

  42. A bit of a story before we continue,

  43. just to illustrate the idea

  44. that the church

  45. has ebbs and flows.

  46. It's a bit of a yo-yo

  47. in terms of its religious fervor.

  48. In the early 19th century,

  49. there was a man named Charles Simeon.

  50. He was at Cambridge.

  51. He came to faith,

  52. and he became an Anglican presbyter,

  53. a minister in the church.

  54. And you think,

  55. at least my grandparents,

  56. they would say stuff all the time like,

  57. in my day,

  58. things were a lot better.

  59. Things were more holy.

  60. There was more devotion to Christ.

  61. And in my mind,

  62. I just think that

  63. that continued to grow,

  64. and it's only our culture that is bad.

  65. But in Charles Simeon's day,

  66. he would make what we are going through

  67. look a bit tame.

  68. At Cambridge,

  69. where he was studying,

  70. he talked about being the only Christian

  71. that he met for three years.

  72. Because we have younger ears here,

  73. there was all sorts of debauchery happening

  74. in broad daylight,

  75. drunkenness,

  76. all sorts of crazy actions

  77. that were happening

  78. on the campus,

  79. in the public areas

  80. at Cambridge.

  81. Religious fervor was at a big-time low.

  82. When Charles Simeon

  83. was ordained

  84. and he was given a church to pastor,

  85. he was locked out for a number of years.

  86. Back, I guess in the day,

  87. they would have locks on the pews

  88. and you would own the key

  89. to unlock that lock

  90. and they would just keep it locked.

  91. And Charles Simeon

  92. was essentially locked out of his own church.

  93. Religious fervor was extremely low.

  94. Evil had its day

  95. and this was some 200 years ago.

  96. But then renewal

  97. and revival

  98. started to take root in England.

  99. And it spread,

  100. continued to spread,

  101. and reform began to happen.

  102. We'll touch a bit more

  103. on what happened

  104. with Charles Simeon,

  105. but suffice it to say,

  106. for him and really

  107. just the generation before

  108. with the Wesley brothers

  109. and then the generation after,

  110. saw incredible revival

  111. and a renewal

  112. of religious life

  113. within England.

  114. But it was not without prayer.

  115. It was not

  116. without

  117. recalling the Lord's goodness,

  118. without confessing sins.

  119. It was not without

  120. rejoicing in God's goodness.

  121. And this is what our text

  122. gets to this morning.

  123. The psalm is

  124. a prayer and appeal

  125. to the Lord God

  126. to do just that.

  127. A bit of a background.

  128. Not entirely sure,

  129. but almost all the scholars

  130. agree that this text

  131. was written

  132. after the return

  133. of God's people

  134. from Babylonian exile.

  135. God had saved

  136. his people once again

  137. from exile,

  138. bringing a large portion

  139. of them back

  140. into the promised land,

  141. and only for them

  142. to fall into

  143. the same habits

  144. that plagued them

  145. from the very beginning.

  146. So,

  147. in many ways,

  148. this text

  149. is a key point

  150. for us.

  151. Religious fervor

  152. is down

  153. in North America,

  154. in the West.

  155. It truly is.

  156. Not in all parts

  157. of the world.

  158. In the global South,

  159. Africa,

  160. Sub-Zaharan Africa,

  161. parts of Iran,

  162. parts of Latin America,

  163. Christian fervor

  164. and devotion

  165. is up and growing.

  166. It's incredible.

  167. But in the West,

  168. it's not.

  169. So,

  170. this text

  171. is very timely

  172. for us this morning.

  173. And as I've said

  174. in previous weeks,

  175. we are studying a psalm,

  176. which means

  177. we ought to learn

  178. how to pray this psalm.

  179. So,

  180. as we encounter

  181. this psalm,

  182. it'll help us

  183. to pray

  184. for the Lord's work

  185. in our day

  186. to reform

  187. and to revive

  188. the church

  189. once again.

  190. And we'll look at it,

  191. the text,

  192. and break it up

  193. into three sections.

  194. To pray this text

  195. is to recall

  196. the Lord's past

  197. acts of salvation.

  198. To pray this text

  199. is to confess

  200. our sins

  201. and to seek renewal

  202. from the Lord.

  203. And finally,

  204. to pray this text

  205. is to rejoice

  206. in the God

  207. of salvation.

  208. So,

  209. grab a Bible

  210. if you don't have it

  211. already.

  212. There's still

  213. a few Bibles

  214. on the back

  215. welcome table,

  216. so grab one

  217. at any time

  218. and follow along.

  219. Let's read

  220. verses 1 to 3.

  221. Lord,

  222. you were favorable

  223. to your land,

  224. you restored

  225. the fortunes

  226. of Jacob,

  227. you forgave

  228. the iniquity

  229. of your people,

  230. you covered

  231. all their sin,

  232. you withdrew

  233. all your wrath,

  234. you turned

  235. from your hot

  236. anger.

  237. The people

  238. of Israel

  239. are recalling

  240. what God

  241. has done

  242. in the past.

  243. Everything here

  244. is past tense

  245. and six verbs

  246. are used

  247. to describe

  248. what God

  249. has done

  250. in the past,

  251. his acts

  252. of salvation.

  253. It says that

  254. he was favorable

  255. to the land,

  256. to the people,

  257. to the nation,

  258. that he restored

  259. their fortunes,

  260. that he forgave

  261. their sins,

  262. he covered

  263. their sins,

  264. he withdrew

  265. his wrath,

  266. he turned

  267. from his hot

  268. anger.

  269. the people,

  270. as I've mentioned,

  271. they were exiled

  272. not because of

  273. geopolitical issues

  274. that just kind of

  275. happened upon them,

  276. but because

  277. they ventured

  278. away from the Lord

  279. and this is

  280. what has happened,

  281. he gave them over

  282. to their enemies.

  283. They were unfaithful

  284. to the covenant

  285. that God made

  286. with them

  287. at Sinai,

  288. the covenant

  289. that God made

  290. with their father

  291. Abraham.

  292. They did not

  293. want to worship

  294. God as their God,

  295. they wanted to worship

  296. the gods

  297. of the nations

  298. around them,

  299. so God said,

  300. okay,

  301. and he gave them

  302. over to the gods

  303. that they were serving,

  304. to the people

  305. that they wanted

  306. to be like.

  307. That should have

  308. been the end of it.

  309. I mean,

  310. listen,

  311. this wasn't the first

  312. time Israel

  313. went about things

  314. this way,

  315. thumbing their nose

  316. at God,

  317. acting in a treacherous

  318. way.

  319. It should have

  320. been the end.

  321. I mean,

  322. growing up,

  323. I used to play

  324. video games a lot

  325. and I used to

  326. hate video games

  327. that didn't have

  328. continues.

  329. You die

  330. and it's over

  331. and you have

  332. to start

  333. from the beginning.

  334. That's what

  335. should have

  336. happened here.

  337. No continues.

  338. No second chances.

  339. No starting

  340. at level three

  341. because you died

  342. in level four.

  343. They should be

  344. completely axed

  345. and yet,

  346. they appeal

  347. to what God

  348. has done

  349. in the past.

  350. Appealing

  351. to his

  352. covenant-keeping

  353. nature,

  354. that that is

  355. who God is

  356. and they are

  357. banking on

  358. the fact

  359. that God

  360. is unchanging.

  361. Interestingly,

  362. the psalm

  363. opens with

  364. an address

  365. to the Lord,

  366. but in the

  367. original language

  368. it's not to

  369. other names

  370. of God

  371. like Adonai

  372. or Elohim,

  373. not necessarily

  374. generic names

  375. of the Lord,

  376. but lesser names

  377. in a sense

  378. than his covenant

  379. name.

  380. But here,

  381. it opens up

  382. by an appeal

  383. to the covenant

  384. name of the Lord,

  385. which is an appeal

  386. to the covenant

  387. God who has

  388. made his covenant,

  389. reminding God

  390. of what he has

  391. done in the past.

  392. They appeal

  393. to God

  394. because he is

  395. the covenant-making

  396. and covenant-keeping

  397. God.

  398. So they're appealing

  399. to the merciful

  400. history of God.

  401. And if you remember

  402. a couple weeks ago

  403. we looked at,

  404. I believe it was

  405. Psalm 83

  406. and explored how

  407. God's history

  408. is actually

  409. our history.

  410. So therefore,

  411. this is

  412. very instructive

  413. for us

  414. on how to go

  415. about appealing

  416. to God

  417. when we need

  418. renewal

  419. for ourselves.

  420. You see,

  421. for the Israelites,

  422. the past salvation

  423. that they had

  424. experienced

  425. of God

  426. informs

  427. their present

  428. prayers.

  429. It helps them

  430. to dispel

  431. errors in their

  432. thinking

  433. and pulls them

  434. out of a

  435. spiraling fall

  436. into discouragement

  437. and despair.

  438. prayer.

  439. This is

  440. a key bit

  441. for us.

  442. Christine and I

  443. last week,

  444. we talked about

  445. the Lord's provision

  446. in our lives,

  447. specifically

  448. just around

  449. our needs

  450. and how

  451. in time

  452. and again

  453. the Lord

  454. has

  455. come through

  456. not in

  457. our timing

  458. but in

  459. his,

  460. which turns out

  461. to be the best

  462. timing.

  463. one example,

  464. we were praying

  465. for something

  466. like six,

  467. eight months,

  468. some of you guys

  469. know this,

  470. I've shared this,

  471. but six or eight

  472. months with the

  473. kids in the

  474. morning,

  475. almost every

  476. morning,

  477. we figured

  478. we'd need a

  479. new vehicle

  480. sooner than

  481. later.

  482. Our car

  483. was getting

  484. old.

  485. Nothing

  486. worked out

  487. in terms

  488. of the

  489. stuff I

  490. was seeing

  491. or there

  492. was a

  493. great deal

  494. and it

  495. was gone

  496. before we

  497. could snatch

  498. it up

  499. or even

  500. contact the

  501. person.

  502. And then

  503. I was with

  504. Joseph on my

  505. day off

  506. and our

  507. transmission

  508. just blew.

  509. I mean,

  510. it didn't

  511. blow up.

  512. Like,

  513. we're still

  514. alive,

  515. okay?

  516. But there

  517. was cranks

  518. and scrapes

  519. and grinds

  520. and it

  521. was like

  522. weirdo

  523. sounds

  524. and the

  525. car stopped

  526. moving.

  527. And anyways,

  528. all I have to

  529. say is that

  530. night,

  531. I put a

  532. deposit on

  533. a car,

  534. I found

  535. one on

  536. Kijiji.

  537. Was it

  538. because my

  539. Kijiji skills

  540. are next

  541. level?

  542. No.

  543. Because God

  544. in his

  545. kindness and

  546. faithfulness

  547. provided.

  548. And we

  549. were talking

  550. about that

  551. because,

  552. you know,

  553. there's other

  554. things that

  555. we need.

  556. So what do

  557. we do?

  558. Do we spiral

  559. into despair

  560. or do we

  561. recall God's

  562. faithfulness

  563. in the past

  564. knowing that

  565. he is

  566. faithful

  567. and unchanging

  568. in the

  569. present?

  570. It's very

  571. important to

  572. recall the

  573. Lord's past

  574. acts of

  575. provision and

  576. favor and

  577. salvation

  578. in our

  579. lives.

  580. it's

  581. always a

  582. stimulant to

  583. more faith.

  584. Always a

  585. stimulant to

  586. more faith.

  587. That's why

  588. reading

  589. scripture is

  590. a fantastic

  591. practice,

  592. not because

  593. it's scripture

  594. and it's the

  595. words of life,

  596. and it is,

  597. but because

  598. almost 50% of

  599. the Bible is

  600. narrative,

  601. and it's story

  602. after story of

  603. God's provision

  604. of the past.

  605. That is our

  606. past,

  607. things that have

  608. happened in

  609. history,

  610. but it's our

  611. history.

  612. And what it

  613. does is it

  614. stimulates our

  615. faith to trust

  616. in the God

  617. that is unchanging

  618. and is faithful

  619. today.

  620. It's also why

  621. we ought to

  622. read Christian

  623. testimony and

  624. examples of

  625. missionary endeavors

  626. or stories of

  627. Charles Simeon

  628. or talk to one

  629. another and ask

  630. them to share

  631. instances in

  632. their own lives

  633. of how God

  634. has been

  635. faithful.

  636. people.

  637. We'll stick

  638. around for

  639. coffee for

  640. 30, 45

  641. minutes.

  642. It's nice.

  643. Small talk.

  644. I'm a fan of

  645. small talk.

  646. I don't think

  647. it's bad

  648. necessarily,

  649. but maybe

  650. enter a bit

  651. farther past

  652. small talk

  653. and ask the

  654. question,

  655. give me an

  656. example of how

  657. the Lord was

  658. faithful to you

  659. in the past.

  660. And it might

  661. feel awkward,

  662. but get somebody

  663. to answer that

  664. question,

  665. or maybe you

  666. share it,

  667. and then listen

  668. and hear how

  669. God has been

  670. faithful to

  671. them,

  672. and I bet you

  673. there will be

  674. connections with

  675. areas in your

  676. life where God

  677. has been faithful

  678. to you,

  679. and what it

  680. will do is it

  681. will spur on

  682. and stimulate

  683. faith for you

  684. to trust in

  685. him in the

  686. present and in

  687. the future.

  688. I'm telling you,

  689. this is the way

  690. it goes.

  691. This is the way

  692. it goes.

  693. As we recall

  694. what the Lord

  695. has done,

  696. we then have a

  697. basis by which

  698. we can honestly

  699. recognize,

  700. our present

  701. situation.

  702. And our

  703. present situation

  704. always calls for

  705. confession,

  706. because it's

  707. always proper

  708. to come to

  709. the Lord

  710. humbly

  711. confessing our

  712. sins,

  713. but especially

  714. in times of

  715. renewal and

  716. restoration,

  717. when we need

  718. him to break

  719. in in a very

  720. special,

  721. significant way.

  722. So,

  723. the second

  724. portion of

  725. this psalm

  726. teaches us how

  727. to confess our

  728. sins and to

  729. seek renewal.

  730. Look with me,

  731. verses 4 to

  732. 7.

  733. Blessed are,

  734. oh,

  735. that's,

  736. sorry,

  737. four here.

  738. Restore us

  739. again,

  740. O God of

  741. our salvation,

  742. and put away

  743. your indignation

  744. towards us.

  745. Will you be

  746. angry with us

  747. forever?

  748. Will you prolong

  749. your anger to

  750. all generations?

  751. Will you not

  752. revive us again,

  753. that your people

  754. may rejoice in

  755. you?

  756. Show us your

  757. steadfast love,

  758. O Lord,

  759. and grant us

  760. your salvation.

  761. I mentioned

  762. the people of

  763. Israel has,

  764. they have run

  765. afoul of God

  766. so many times,

  767. and yet,

  768. the call of

  769. God is always

  770. to turn

  771. towards him.

  772. God does not

  773. delight in the

  774. death of

  775. somebody who

  776. does evil,

  777. but rather that

  778. they would turn

  779. towards him

  780. and live.

  781. That is what

  782. he desires.

  783. And this is

  784. what he is

  785. calling Israel

  786. to,

  787. and this is

  788. what they

  789. are doing

  790. here.

  791. The sin of

  792. the people

  793. have caused

  794. God to be

  795. indignant

  796. towards them.

  797. That is what

  798. we see in

  799. verse 4,

  800. that they are

  801. recognizing God

  802. is angry,

  803. his anger,

  804. his just anger

  805. is burning

  806. towards the

  807. people because

  808. of their

  809. waywardness,

  810. their treason,

  811. their infidelity

  812. towards him.

  813. He is

  814. betrayed,

  815. and his

  816. anger is

  817. righteous,

  818. and it's

  819. kindled,

  820. but God

  821. does not

  822. divorce his

  823. bride.

  824. Instead,

  825. he extends

  826. undeserved

  827. mercy,

  828. he seeks to

  829. restore and

  830. to renew.

  831. They ask the

  832. question,

  833. will you be

  834. angry forever?

  835. Of course

  836. he won't.

  837. Likewise,

  838. will you

  839. revive us

  840. again?

  841. The answer

  842. is obvious.

  843. Yes,

  844. he will.

  845. He does

  846. not cancel.

  847. He does

  848. not seek

  849. revenge.

  850. He is

  851. not petty.

  852. He is

  853. not vindictive.

  854. Again,

  855. he does

  856. not delight

  857. in the

  858. death of

  859. an

  860. evildoer.

  861. He does

  862. not want

  863. their

  864. destruction.

  865. He

  866. extends

  867. mercy,

  868. extends

  869. mercy,

  870. extends

  871. mercy,

  872. delights in

  873. extending

  874. mercy,

  875. and undeserved

  876. mercy at

  877. that.

  878. God is

  879. waiting for

  880. confession of

  881. sin,

  882. for us to

  883. turn towards

  884. him.

  885. And this is

  886. what we are

  887. seeing here.

  888. And if you

  889. struggle with

  890. thinking that

  891. God is ready

  892. to pounce on

  893. you when you

  894. do evil,

  895. think about

  896. the parable

  897. of the two

  898. sons that

  899. Jesus tells

  900. the father is

  901. waiting for the

  902. prodigal to

  903. come home.

  904. He is

  905. scanning the

  906. horizon.

  907. His eyes

  908. are glued to

  909. the horizon,

  910. just waiting.

  911. He is

  912. outside,

  913. bending his

  914. ear to hear

  915. footsteps.

  916. He is waiting

  917. for his son

  918. to come back.

  919. And he sees

  920. his son turn

  921. towards him,

  922. his son.

  923. Obviously,

  924. if you know

  925. the story,

  926. he is full of

  927. guilt.

  928. The father

  929. runs to

  930. him,

  931. clothes him,

  932. puts a

  933. ring on

  934. his finger,

  935. has a huge

  936. banquet for him,

  937. rejoicing that

  938. he has

  939. returned.

  940. This is

  941. the God

  942. who we

  943. confess to.

  944. This is the

  945. God that we

  946. turn towards

  947. when we have

  948. been wayward

  949. and unfaithful.

  950. He is the

  951. one that will

  952. revive and

  953. renew.

  954. That is the

  955. Lord and

  956. his goodness

  957. and his

  958. kindness.

  959. But make

  960. no mistake,

  961. it is us

  962. and he helps

  963. us by his

  964. Holy Spirit,

  965. but we ought

  966. to turn to

  967. him and not

  968. presume that

  969. he will extend

  970. mercy to us,

  971. but appeal to

  972. his mercy,

  973. appeal to

  974. his character,

  975. appeal to

  976. his very

  977. person.

  978. And what

  979. are we

  980. restored to?

  981. We are

  982. restored in

  983. order to

  984. worship.

  985. We see this

  986. in verse

  987. six.

  988. Will you not

  989. revive us

  990. again that

  991. your people

  992. may rejoice

  993. in you?

  994. notice that

  995. the people

  996. recognize that

  997. their chief

  998. end in

  999. this

  1000. restoration

  1001. salvation

  1002. game is

  1003. not for

  1004. their own

  1005. benefit,

  1006. but first

  1007. and foremost

  1008. for the

  1009. Lord's

  1010. renown.

  1011. Of course

  1012. there is

  1013. benefit to

  1014. knowing the

  1015. Lord and

  1016. enjoying his

  1017. goodness and

  1018. his restoration,

  1019. but first

  1020. and foremost

  1021. it is about

  1022. his glory

  1023. and his

  1024. rejoicing in

  1025. his name.

  1026. God of

  1027. creation

  1028. again deserves

  1029. to be

  1030. rejoiced by

  1031. the people

  1032. he has

  1033. created as

  1034. they experience

  1035. his steadfast

  1036. love.

  1037. The Lord

  1038. does this

  1039. in the most

  1040. wonderful way

  1041. by not

  1042. denying who

  1043. he is,

  1044. for God

  1045. is what

  1046. he does,

  1047. and we'll

  1048. unpack that

  1049. in this next

  1050. section.

  1051. Look with me

  1052. verses 8 to

  1053. 11, but

  1054. we'll just

  1055. read verse

  1056. 8.

  1057. Let me

  1058. hear what

  1059. God the

  1060. Lord will

  1061. speak, for

  1062. he will

  1063. speak peace

  1064. to his

  1065. people, to

  1066. his saints,

  1067. but let

  1068. them not

  1069. turn back

  1070. to folly.

  1071. I'll pause

  1072. there.

  1073. The psalmist

  1074. knows that

  1075. God despises

  1076. the proud,

  1077. but gives

  1078. grace to

  1079. the humble.

  1080. He knows

  1081. that God

  1082. cannot deny

  1083. himself as

  1084. the giver

  1085. of good

  1086. things,

  1087. that God

  1088. is the

  1089. creator of

  1090. life,

  1091. so therefore

  1092. the psalmist

  1093. on behalf

  1094. of his

  1095. people inquires

  1096. of the

  1097. Lord,

  1098. expecting him

  1099. to speak.

  1100. And this

  1101. bit about

  1102. God speaking

  1103. peace, I

  1104. mean, it's

  1105. a beautiful

  1106. line, but

  1107. it harkens

  1108. back to

  1109. creation

  1110. itself.

  1111. God is

  1112. the

  1113. supernatural

  1114. creator who

  1115. creates

  1116. everything out

  1117. of chaos

  1118. and nothing,

  1119. bringing order

  1120. to the

  1121. world.

  1122. God is

  1123. himself

  1124. uncreated

  1125. and he

  1126. doesn't

  1127. take

  1128. materials

  1129. that are

  1130. pre-existing

  1131. and creates

  1132. what we

  1133. have in

  1134. this earth,

  1135. this cosmos,

  1136. but he

  1137. speaks and

  1138. things are

  1139. created.

  1140. And here,

  1141. the peace

  1142. that he

  1143. extends to

  1144. us, he

  1145. speaks to

  1146. us, for

  1147. he will

  1148. speak peace

  1149. to his

  1150. people, to

  1151. his saints.

  1152. Just a

  1153. couple

  1154. things.

  1155. The

  1156. estrangement

  1157. that we

  1158. have from

  1159. God is

  1160. not remedied

  1161. by doing

  1162. good works.

  1163. It can't

  1164. be remedied

  1165. by having

  1166. behavior

  1167. modification.

  1168. Very

  1169. important

  1170. aspects to

  1171. what it

  1172. means to

  1173. live in

  1174. obedience to

  1175. God is

  1176. to grow

  1177. in our

  1178. faithful,

  1179. obedient

  1180. behavior

  1181. towards the

  1182. Lord.

  1183. But it

  1184. can never

  1185. remedy the

  1186. estrangement

  1187. that we

  1188. have, because

  1189. the estrangement

  1190. we have,

  1191. the odds

  1192. that we're

  1193. at odds

  1194. with God,

  1195. it goes

  1196. deep, the

  1197. roots go

  1198. all the

  1199. way down,

  1200. it hits

  1201. the very

  1202. depths of

  1203. our soul.

  1204. Therefore,

  1205. God needs

  1206. to speak

  1207. peace to

  1208. us, which

  1209. is to say

  1210. that he

  1211. needs to

  1212. speak a

  1213. supernatural

  1214. creation

  1215. within us,

  1216. taking a

  1217. heart that

  1218. is made of

  1219. stone and

  1220. making it

  1221. into flesh.

  1222. We have

  1223. no ability

  1224. to know

  1225. and love

  1226. and turn

  1227. towards the

  1228. Lord by

  1229. our own

  1230. strength, so

  1231. he has to

  1232. help us

  1233. with that.

  1234. And here,

  1235. the psalmist

  1236. is recognizing

  1237. that a part

  1238. of the

  1239. salvation that

  1240. we get to

  1241. enjoy from

  1242. the Lord

  1243. is a

  1244. creative act

  1245. by the

  1246. creator of

  1247. all things.

  1248. You remember

  1249. the first

  1250. act of

  1251. God in

  1252. the pages

  1253. of Holy

  1254. Scripture

  1255. is creation.

  1256. And one

  1257. thing I love

  1258. about it is

  1259. that God

  1260. doesn't put

  1261. on a

  1262. carpenter's

  1263. apron or

  1264. a welder's

  1265. smock or

  1266. coveralls and

  1267. take some

  1268. pre-existing

  1269. material and

  1270. gets to

  1271. work.

  1272. No, he

  1273. just speaks.

  1274. And the

  1275. entire cosmos,

  1276. the entire

  1277. universe,

  1278. everything that

  1279. exists came

  1280. into being.

  1281. God just

  1282. spoke.

  1283. No more

  1284. chaos,

  1285. but order.

  1286. And

  1287. interestingly,

  1288. in Mark

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  1289. chapter 4,

  1290. we see

  1291. something similar.

  1292. Jesus is

  1293. in the

  1294. chaotic

  1295. winds and

  1296. the waves

  1297. with his

  1298. disciples in

  1299. a boat as

  1300. he is crossing

  1301. the Sea of

  1302. Galilee and

  1303. they cry out

  1304. to him for

  1305. salvation.

  1306. And he

  1307. gets up and

  1308. he says to

  1309. the wind and

  1310. the storm,

  1311. peace, be

  1312. quiet.

  1313. And that

  1314. same act of

  1315. creation is on

  1316. full display.

  1317. And this is

  1318. what is

  1319. happening here.

  1320. The psalmist

  1321. is saying,

  1322. for he will

  1323. speak peace

  1324. to his

  1325. people, to

  1326. his saints.

  1327. And then a

  1328. warning, let

  1329. them not

  1330. turn back

  1331. to folly.

  1332. Is this

  1333. not what we

  1334. desire?

  1335. To have

  1336. this

  1337. estrangement

  1338. with God

  1339. remedied?

  1340. To not

  1341. turn back

  1342. to our

  1343. folly?

  1344. Is

  1345. if you've

  1346. lived long

  1347. enough,

  1348. and hopefully

  1349. this isn't

  1350. your experience,

  1351. but if you've

  1352. lived long

  1353. enough,

  1354. you get

  1355. into some

  1356. kind of

  1357. issue with

  1358. somebody that

  1359. you love

  1360. or you're

  1361. friends with,

  1362. and you

  1363. become

  1364. estranged

  1365. with them.

  1366. And then a

  1367. week goes by

  1368. and you don't

  1369. talk with

  1370. them, and

  1371. you don't

  1372. remedy the

  1373. situation, and

  1374. then a

  1375. month, and

  1376. then maybe

  1377. a year, and

  1378. then maybe

  1379. it's a

  1380. decade.

  1381. And you

  1382. move on to

  1383. an extent, but

  1384. the estrangement

  1385. is a monkey

  1386. on your back.

  1387. You feel it.

  1388. Something's

  1389. wrong, something's

  1390. not right,

  1391. there's a

  1392. relationship that

  1393. is chaotic.

  1394. You can

  1395. pretend it's

  1396. not a

  1397. problem, but

  1398. it's a

  1399. problem.

  1400. Do we

  1401. not all

  1402. wish to

  1403. have no

  1404. estranged

  1405. relationships in

  1406. our lives?

  1407. God is

  1408. offering this

  1409. to us.

  1410. We are the

  1411. ones who have

  1412. wronged him, but

  1413. he is the

  1414. one who reaches

  1415. down to us to

  1416. remedy the

  1417. situation.

  1418. And not

  1419. just with us

  1420. in him, but

  1421. as we come

  1422. into a

  1423. proper, restored,

  1424. renewed

  1425. relationship with

  1426. him, our

  1427. other relationships

  1428. begin to

  1429. look less

  1430. chaotic and

  1431. more orderly.

  1432. That's not a

  1433. promise, by the

  1434. way, that all

  1435. your relationships

  1436. will cease to

  1437. be chaotic or

  1438. estranged, but

  1439. your heart will

  1440. be turning towards

  1441. restoration, not

  1442. away from it.

  1443. the world

  1444. begins to be a

  1445. place where

  1446. you want to

  1447. extend God's

  1448. order and his

  1449. goodness and his

  1450. mercy and his

  1451. love and his

  1452. steadfastness and

  1453. his faithfulness and

  1454. his righteousness

  1455. everywhere.

  1456. Going back to

  1457. Charles Simeon, so

  1458. Charles Simeon, he

  1459. comes to faith, he

  1460. goes through a

  1461. really, really

  1462. difficult time trying

  1463. to pastor this

  1464. church.

  1465. Eventually, they let

  1466. him in after years

  1467. and years and

  1468. years, which is

  1469. crazy to think.

  1470. If you guys want

1471. to lock me out, I

  1472. mean, that would

  1473. be a horrendous

  1474. experience for a

  1475. week.

  1476. He went on, you

  1477. know, for years, but

  1478. slowly, people were

  1479. converted.

  1480. Slowly, this renewal

  1481. started to take

  1482. root in England, and

  1483. not only did people

  1484. come to faith, but

  1485. Charles Simeon and a

  1486. group called the

  1487. Clapham sect, you

  1488. can look them up

  1489. there.

  1490. It's a wonderful

  1491. testimony to the

  1492. Lord's renewal

  1493. movements in

  1494. history.

  1495. But this group of

  1496. ministers, which

  1497. included William

  1498. Wilberforce, among

  1499. others, they

  1500. started evangelistic

  1501. ministries like the

  1502. Bible Society.

  1503. They started the

  1504. Christian Mission to

  1505. the Jews, among

  1506. other things, and

  1507. other missionary

  1508. movements.

  1509. They also started

  1510. organizations that

  1511. would eventually

  1512. stop animal cruelty

  1513. that mattered to

  1514. them, to stop the

  1515. transatlantic slave

  1516. trade.

  1517. It really found its

  1518. momentum in this

  1519. group that were so

  1520. touched by and

  1521. renewed by the Holy

  1522. Spirit that they

  1523. extended the grace and

  1524. goodness of God to

  1525. every aspect of, of

  1526. every sphere of their

  1527. influence, every aspect

  1528. of their society.

  1529. And things changed.

  1530. It was an unbelievable

  1531. season in the church,

  1532. church, going from

  1533. darkness to light.

  1534. You see, the blessing

  1535. of God always extends

  1536. out to include others

  1537. who are also

  1538. experiencing this

  1539. estrangement.

1540. So we get right with

1541. God, we get right with

  1542. others, we tell people

  1543. and bear witness to

  1544. them about God's, his

  1545. restoration plan, and it

  1546. continues on.

1547. This is the way the

  1548. Lord works.

1549. Look with me in verse

  1550. nine.

  1551. Surely his salvation is

1552. near to those who fear

  1553. him.

1554. The glory may dwell, that

1555. glory may dwell in our

  1556. land.

  1557. The people of Israel,

  1558. they want, they want

  1559. God's presence back

  1560. amongst them.

  1561. And God's presence has

  1562. always been amongst his

  1563. people, first in the

  1564. tent of meeting, the

1565. tabernacle in the, in the

  1566. desert years, and then

  1567. eventually the temple

1568. that was built by King

  1569. Solomon.

1570. And they, it seems that

  1571. they want something

  1572. similar to that, but,

1573. but this verse here, it's

  1574. this prophetic, this, this

  1575. prophetic announcement

  1576. that there's something

1577. more that God has in

1578. store with his glory, with

  1579. his presence amongst his

  1580. people.

1581. It seems to imply that the,

  1582. that the glorious presence

1583. of God himself would pay

1584. his people a visit, but

1585. then extend to all the

  1586. nations.

  1587. Interestingly, the, the

1588. word here, dwell, is the

1589. same Hebrew root word for,

1590. for the glory of God that

  1591. came upon the mountain,

1592. Mount Sinai, of, when, when

1593. Moses went up to get the

1594. law, that it was the

  1595. Shekinah glory, the, the

  1596. unapproachable light, and

1597. this is what the text is

1598. getting at, that God is

1599. going to dwell amongst his

  1600. people.

1601. But will he be in

  1602. unapproachable light?

1603. I think what this is, is

  1604. it's pointing prophetically

  1605. to Christ.

  1606. Consider these two verses,

  1607. Hebrews chapter 1, verse

    Hebrews 1:3

1608. 3, he is the radiance of

1609. the glory of God and the

  1610. exact imprint of his

1611. nature, and he upholds the

1612. universe by the word of

  1613. his power after making

  1614. purifications for sins, that

1615. is, his life, death, and

1616. resurrection, he sat down at

1617. the right hand of the

  1618. majesty on high, John 1, 14,

1619. and the word, that is

  1620. Jesus, became flesh and

1621. dwelt among us, and we

1622. have seen his glory, there's

1623. that term glory, glory as

1624. of the only Son from the

1625. Father full of grace and

  1626. truth.

  1627. You see what's happening

1628. here is God is promising

  1629. salvation, and that his

  1630. presence would again dwell

1631. with his people, but not

1632. like in the past, that he

  1633. would take upon him

  1634. humanity, take humanity up

1635. into him, and that God, the

1636. Son of God, Jesus Christ,

1637. fully man and fully God,

  1638. there's the incarnation

1639. again, we talked about that

1640. last week, he would dwell

1641. among his people, and then

  1642. his people would be

  1643. transformed, renewed, and

1644. restored to him, and then

1645. this goodness and glory would

1646. be extended to Judea, Samaria,

1647. to the ends of the earth.

1648. Once again, we see God's

  1649. presence and salvation at

  1650. work, extending and inviting

1651. and including all that would

  1652. but turn to him.

  1653. His faithfulness is expressed

1654. in his mercy, and his

  1655. righteousness will be

  1656. satisfied in Christ Jesus.

  1657. Verses 10 to 11, and we're

1658. going to wrap things up.

1659. Some of the most beautiful

1660. poetic words in scripture, this

1661. is how it reads, steadfast

  1662. love and faithfulness meet,

  1663. righteousness and peace

  1664. kiss each other, faithfulness

1665. springs up from the ground,

  1666. and righteousness looks down

  1667. from the sky.

1668. This is who our God is, and

1669. what I mentioned before that

1670. there's an appeal to God to

1671. not deny who he is, this is

1672. it, for God does not just do

1673. works, but he is what he does.

1674. God is the creator, he doesn't

  1675. just create.

1676. God does not just bring peace,

1677. but he is peace himself.

1678. God does not just extend

1679. steadfast love, he himself is

  1680. love.

1681. He's unable to be anything

  1682. other than faithful.

1683. He has made promises, he will

1684. keep promises, he is righteous in

1685. all he does because he himself is

  1686. the only righteous one.

1687. So you see that God, that Israel

1688. rather, is appealing to God to not

1689. deny who he is because he cannot.

1690. So they don't presume mercy, but

1691. they say, God, do what only you can

  1692. do.

1693. They are throwing themselves at the

1694. very character and person of God.

  1695. God.

1696. And this speaks to us this morning

1697. because the renewal that we need

1698. and desire in our families and in

1699. our own personal lives, but in our

1700. families and in our neighborhoods,

1701. the renewal is not something that we

1702. can get, but a person that we find.

1703. That is Christ our Lord.

1704. The psalm concludes like this,

1705. yes, the Lord will give what is good

1706. and our land will yield its

  1707. increase.

1708. Righteousness will go before him

1709. and make his footsteps away.

1710. Like in the 1800s, in Charles

1711. Simeon's day, we live in what

  1712. a political commentator, a guy named

1713. Aaron Wren, calls the negative world

1714. that we cease to have a place at the

1715. table as Christians that are genuinely

1716. trying to follow the Lord.

1717. Our society has embraced the culture

  1718. of death.

1719. And although there are wonderful

1720. redeeming things about our culture,

1721. by and large, it has turned away

1722. from God in a very, very, very

  1723. obvious way.

1724. We live in the negative world.

1725. Being a Christian makes us suspect.

1726. It makes us a force of ill and evil.

1727. So how ought we to respond?

1728. I think we need to respond by

1729. remembering who the Lord is and

1730. appealing to his very character.

  1731. Verse 13, it says,

1732. righteousness will go before him

1733. and make his footsteps away.

1734. I read, and I think this was Charles

1735. Simeon in the persecution that he

1736. faced, but he, I could be getting

1737. this wrong, but I think it was

  1738. Charles Simeon.

1739. He said, listen, if I have to go

1740. through a bramble of hedges or a

  1741. hedge of brambles,

  1742. a very prickly bush,

1743. as long as I can get my head in

1744. and my shoulders to the other side,

1745. I'll get scraped up a little bit,

  1746. but I'll be okay.

1747. And he says, Christ, my head,

1748. has made the way for me.

1749. He has already gone through,

1750. and I simply am going to get

1751. scraped up a little bit.

1752. And here, verse 13 is saying that

1753. he himself has gone before us,

1754. he has made the way,

1755. and we are simply following him

1756. and being faithful because he

  1757. was faithful to us.

1758. So as we seek the Lord's face,

1759. we first remember what he has

1760. done in the past, we second,

1761. confess our sins, and then third,

1762. we rejoice in the God who delights

  1763. in renewal and restoration.

1764. A church that is not perfect,

1765. but is seeking to follow the Lord,

1766. it is an apologetic to the world

1767. that God is not dead,

1768. and that he is extending mercy

1769. to all that would turn to him.

1770. Friends, as we submit to and grow

1771. and rejoice in the incarnate God,

1772. it is bound to happen that renewal

1773. and restoration will take root

1774. in our lives and in our families

1775. and in our church community

1776. and will continue to extend

1777. and extend and extend and extend.

1778. Let us pray for such a thing.

  1779. Let us pray now.

1780. Lord, thank you so much

1781. for the examples from the past,

  1782. both in Holy Scripture,

1783. but also in the history of the church,

1784. of your faithfulness and your goodness

  1785. and your restoration

  1786. and your renewal

  1787. and your mercy

1788. that you have extended time

1789. and again to an undeserved people,

1790. but a people that you have

  1791. committed yourself to.

1792. A people that you have sent your son

1793. to die on their behalf

1794. so that we might live in him.

1795. Lord, help us to remember

1796. that Christ has already gone before us

1797. and that we will never suffer

  1798. like he has suffered,

1799. but that we can suffer in part

1800. and it is a great joy to do so

1801. for your glory, for your name.

1802. And Lord, help us to be brave as well.

1803. Lord, we live in a negative world,

1804. but here we have the very gift of life.

1805. Not a gift of life,

1806. not a way to heaven,

1807. but the way to heaven.

1808. The way that we can have this

  1809. eternal estrangement

  1810. dealt with forever.

1811. So Lord, we ask that you would

1812. bless us as your people.

1813. We don't presume to receive your mercy,

1814. but Lord, we appeal to you

1815. to do what you delight in doing.

1816. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  1817. Amen.
