  1. Before we get into our text today, the text that Matt read, I don't think he wrote it, I think he read it.

  2. Let's pray.

  3. Father in heaven, we thank you for your word, written by human hands, inspired by your Holy Spirit.

  4. And Lord, because it is inspired, because it's not just a wonderful story or a classic tale or a myth of old,

  5. but it is your very word, help us to submit to it, to live by it, to be formed by it.

  6. And Lord, we want to be people that seek after your truth.

  7. So Lord, we pray that only truth will last after this sermon, and that you would bless us.

  8. And we pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  9. Bit of a news flash.

  10. Clairvoyants are making a comeback.

  11. I don't know if you guys knew this.

  12. I mean, at least they are from Disney's point of view.

  13. The past two or three weeks, I've been going on, whether it's YouTube, whether I check the score app to check out baseball scores,

  14. or see if there's any news in the NBA.

  15. I mean, wherever it is, on the side of buses, Disney is pushing their new spin-off of a spin-off called Agatha All Along.

  16. And if you haven't heard of it, it is about a witch.

  17. And she is a bit of an anti-hero.

  18. It's about revenge.

  19. And it is not subtle in any way.

  20. It is about witchcraft.

  21. Wicca, the occult, you name it.

  22. And if anything, a show like this only confirms the popularity of witchcraft reflected in society.

  23. I mean, Disney and other corporations, they want to pick winners.

  24. They want to hit home runs.

  25. They want to make money.

  26. And if they know they can make something that's going to appeal to the cultural moment of the day, whatever is exciting, whatever is popular, they'll do that.

  27. And really interesting.

  28. When I say clairvoyants are making a comeback, it's a bit of a gripping statement.

  29. But I really do mean it.

  30. I found an article from 2022, October 31st, of course, 2022, so 23 months ago, that detailed this new trend on TikTok.

  31. If you are not like 25 or under, TikTok is new social media.

  32. But hashtag witchtalk is a whole subsection of TikTok that is dedicated to incantations, spells, witchcraft, Wicca, wizardry, you name it.

  33. And back in 2022, at the time of the writing of that article that I read,

  34. there was something like over 30 billion specific views on hashtag witchtalk.

  35. I have no idea what it is to say.

  36. I wasn't going to spend an hour going down the rabbit hole of looking for current stats for witchtalk.

  37. I'm sure it's more than 30 billion now.

  38. What's interesting is, you know, on one hand, it seems like there's just a bunch of people trying to do some cosplay stuff.

  39. But it would appear that it is appealing to this growing desire to be connected to something more than the material world that we have.

  40. This now cottage industry of online influencers that push the occult are making coin from people,

  41. learning how to do tarot card readings, learning incantations, learning blessings and curses.

  42. People are making thousands of dollars for private lessons.

  43. Whether or not they're professionals, I don't know where you can get your credentials to be a witch.

  44. But nevertheless, clairvoyance seem to be back.

  45. So we're going to continue in Acts.

  46. That's a bit of an interesting way to open up a sermon.

  47. But we continue in Acts and we're going to read about an interaction with this first missionary journey.

  48. Paul, at the time Saul, he's going to have a name change here and he'll continue to go by Paul for the rest of Acts.

  49. So Saul, Paul, Barnabas and then John Mark will be the first commissioned missionaries.

  50. And within the first story, they're going to have this interaction with a false prophet that's described as a magician.

  51. Not described as like a court jester or somebody who does some fun party tricks,

  52. but as somebody who has real political and cultural power in the city.

  53. In fact, he's an advisor to Sergius Paulus.

  54. He is the pro-council, the highest ranking official, Roman official in the island of Cyprus.

  55. Or is it Crete, Cyprus?

  56. Wherever they are.

  57. So as we read, I want to caution us to be not quick to dismiss this story as mythical and fictional.

  58. Why? For, I guess, a couple of reasons.

  59. The first one is that Luke, who wrote this account, isn't writing a myth.

  60. He is not writing a story, but theological history.

  61. And Luke isn't a writer by profession.

  62. He's a doctor.

  63. He is about facts and he is looking to write a near forensic account,

  64. a near forensic theological account of the birth and growth of the church.

  65. If you remember last week in Acts chapter 12, he details the demise of Herod Agrippa.

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  66. And this description, I mean, different in minor details,

  67. but it is corroborated by non-Christian historians.

  68. Luke is writing history.

  69. The second thing is we have a tendency here in the West to have chronological and intellectual snobbery

  70. towards things that happened in yester century and to people that live primarily in the global South.

  71. We would see them as backwards.

  72. We are rationalistic people.

  73. But this idea of rationalistic, material, enlightenment thinking is very new.

  74. And it fails to see this whole picture of God's creation.

  75. How God created the world.

  76. That there is a spiritual world.

  77. So, as a bit of an introduction,

  78. and because we are committed in this church to preach through full books of the Bible,

  79. we are going to walk towards a story about a magician this morning.

  80. We are going to see what the Lord would speak to us through it,

  81. how it is going to shape our lives,

  82. and really how we are going to see that the gospel in this story,

  83. that the gospel and only the gospel has the power to transform societies,

  84. to confront deception and evil,

  85. and to bring hope and truth where there is none.

  86. So, let's jump right into it.

  87. We will read starting in verse 4.

  88. And we will read to verse 7.

  89. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit,

  90. that is,

  91. Paul, Saul, Barnabas, John, Mark,

  92. they went down to Seleucia,

  93. and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

  94. When they arrived at Salamis,

  95. they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews.

  96. That was the custom.

  97. They would first go to these points of connection.

  98. They are primarily Jewish missionaries that have come to faith in Jesus.

  99. So, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews,

  100. and they had John to assist them.

  101. When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos,

  102. they came upon a certain magician,

  103. a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus.

  104. He was with the procouncil, Sergius Paulus,

  105. a man of intelligence,

  106. who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.

  107. You'll notice right off the bat that the missionaries,

  108. even though they're commissioned by the church,

  109. they are really commissioned and led by the Holy Spirit.

  110. Paul, Barnabas, John, Mark,

  111. begin this evangelistic tour across Cyprus.

  112. Barnabas, it could have been,

  113. it's not in the narrative,

  114. but Barnabas is from Cyprus.

  115. It seems in the previous section

  116. that the Holy Spirit or the church

  117. don't give them a commissioning to a specific region,

  118. but they're told to just go,

  119. so maybe Barnabas says,

  120. let's start with my hometown,

  121. my home island.

  122. So they end up going to Cyprus.

  123. They travel, they land,

  124. they travel dozens and dozens and dozens of miles

  125. proclaiming the gospel,

  126. first to the Jewish community

  127. and then to the Greeks.

  128. And there seems to be a growing buzz about them

  129. for by the time they get so far inland

  130. to where the procouncil is,

  131. this guy, Sergius Paulus,

  132. he needs them in his court.

  133. What is going on?

  134. I need to hear what is happening.

  135. There clearly is a buzz.

  136. The message is being embraced.

  137. Things are changing.

  138. The gospel has the power to transform societies.

  139. You notice that the procouncil is described

  140. as a man of intelligence,

  141. which is just to say that he can think in a straight line.

  142. He's a rational, logical man.

  143. Even though he has a very interesting collection of advisors in his court,

  144. he wants truth.

  145. And here's the thing.

  146. When change happens,

  147. when there's a societal shift,

  148. religious or not,

  149. people in power seem to take notice.

  150. And those who are truth seekers want to know what's happening.

  151. And this is what's happening with Sergius Paulus.

  152. Cyprus,

  153. it's implied here that Cyprus,

  154. the Cypriots are coming to faith.

  155. Everyone,

  156. not everyone,

  157. it doesn't say that,

  158. but enough that there is a buzz happening.

  159. And the procouncil is seeing.

  160. He wants to know.

  161. He wants to know what is happening with his people.

  162. And here's the thing.

  163. When the true gospel is proclaimed,

  164. it inevitably causes change.

  165. The gospel,

  166. when it's proclaimed that Jesus Christ is the victor,

  167. that he is defeated death by death,

  168. that corruption and evil

  169. are no longer going to be the main force,

  170. within a pagan society,

  171. but rather that Jesus is king overall,

  172. that righteous and holiness

  173. begins to take root in people's lives,

  174. behaviors are reformed,

  175. money and time are spent in different ways

  176. and on different things.

  177. It doesn't happen overnight.

  178. Sometimes it can,

  179. but by and large,

  180. when the gospel is proclaimed,

  181. heard,

  182. accepted,

  183. and it starts to shape people's lives,

  184. things transform

  185. and things are noticeable.

  186. We'll see a great example

  187. later on in Acts 19,

  188. but there's this instance in Acts 19

  189. where the gospel goes out

  190. and it changes the hearts of the people

  191. so much that they do away with their idols

  192. and it destroys an entire industry of idol making.

  193. Big problem

  194. for the idol makers.

  195. We'll get to that later on.

  196. But here's the thing.

  197. Like with Israel,

  198. like always with God's people,

  199. we are,

  200. as God's people,

  201. called to disciple the nations,

  202. teaching them everything that Christ has taught us.

  203. And that means we are to counsel people

  204. in the ways of God.

  205. What that ends up doing

  206. is it exposes false beliefs.

  207. It's false gospels.

  208. On one hand,

  209. it comforts the afflicted,

  210. but those that are in power

  211. or are enjoying their comfort,

  212. always at the expense of others,

  213. what it does is it afflicts them.

  214. So the gospel always has this two-pronged approach

  215. to the culture.

  216. It comforts those that are afflicted,

  217. but also afflicts those that are comfortable.

  218. Comfortable in their sin,

  219. in their self-glorification,

  220. in their idolatry,

  221. in their unchecked and selfish use of power.

  222. So the gospel isn't the gospel

  223. unless it begins to shake things up

  224. and change things.

  225. And this is what we're seeing here.

  226. The gospel is transforming Cyprus.

  227. And people are noticing.

  228. And things are changing.

  229. And Christ is being embraced

  230. as the true King of kings

  231. and Lord of lords.

  232. This is nothing short of regime change,

  233. the regimes of the heart.

  234. But change doesn't come without conflict.

  235. I mentioned in Acts 19,

  236. I don't know when we're going to get there.

  237. I think it might be in a couple months.

  238. Maybe before the start of Advent.

  239. But this change doesn't come without conflict.

  240. And we're going to see this conflict here

  241. with Bar-Jesus or Elemis.

  242. Look with me now in verses 8.

  243. And this is our second point,

  244. that the gospel confronts deception and evil.

  245. Verse 8.

  246. But Elemis,

  247. the magician,

  248. for that is the meaning of his name,

  249. opposed them.

  250. That is the missionaries,

  251. Paul, Barnabas, and John Mark.

  252. Opposed them,

  253. seeking to turn the procouncil

  254. away from the faith.

  255. But Saul,

  256. who was also called Paul,

  257. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  258. looked intently at him,

  259. and said,

  260. You son of the devil,

  261. you enemy of all righteousness,

  262. full of all deceit and villainy,

  263. will you not stop making crooked

  264. the straight paths of the Lord?

  265. Make no mistake,

  266. he is called out.

  267. Saul,

  268. Paul does not use

  269. flowery language.

  270. There's a time to be

  271. to be winsome.

  272. There's a time to find

  273. bridges and build bridges.

  274. I want to be careful

  275. with narratives,

  276. drawing out prescriptive

  277. truths out of them.

  278. This is not necessarily

  279. the way you

  280. deal with every person

  281. that opposes the Lord.

  282. But in this case,

  283. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  284. he is led

  285. to call a spade a spade.

  286. This magician,

  287. this conjurer,

  288. this clairvoyant,

  289. this warlock,

  290. whatever he is called,

  291. he is not on God's side,

  292. but on the devil's side.

  293. Bar Jesus,

  294. his name literally means

  295. the son of salvation.

  296. He is influencing

  297. the leading

  298. highest ranking official

  299. of the Roman

  300. outpost in Cyprus

  301. and not leading him

  302. towards righteousness,

  303. not leading him

  304. towards truth

  305. or goodness

  306. or mercy

  307. or love.

  308. Paul calls him out,

  309. again,

  310. inspired and filled

  311. with the Holy Spirit,

  312. which is to say

  313. he is not acting

  314. on his own accord.

  315. He doesn't have a grudge

  316. against this guy.

  317. He is simply

  318. a mouthpiece

  319. and tool

  320. in the Lord's hand.

  321. He says,

  322. you're an enemy

  323. of righteousness.

  324. You are full of deceit

  325. and villainy

  326. and he is making

  327. the straight paths

  328. of the Lord crooked.

  329. If this helps at all,

  330. he is like worm tongue

  331. in the Lord of the Rings,

  332. if you're familiar

  333. with that,

  334. influencing

  335. the King Theoden

  336. of Rohan,

  337. he is speaking

  338. sweet deceit

  339. in his ears.

  340. He's actively

  341. opposing the missionaries

  342. from sharing

  343. the gospel

  344. with Sergius Paulus

  345. because he's

  346. also making

  347. his coin

  348. from being

  349. an advisor.

  350. He has status

  351. in standing

  352. in the court

  353. of the most powerful

  354. man in the land

  355. and he stands

  356. to lose it.

  357. He knows that.

  358. He doesn't seem

  359. to care

  360. that in Christ Jesus

  361. the court

  362. of a procouncil

  363. of Cyprus

  364. is nothing

  365. compared to the riches

  366. of glory

  367. of knowing Christ.

  368. He wants to hold on

  369. to his earthly power.

  370. He's not letting it go

  371. and the apostle Paul

  372. gives it to him straight.

  373. The gospel message,

  374. it will never shy away

  375. from addressing

  376. deception

  377. and evil

  378. and confronting it

  379. because the good news

  380. is that Christ Jesus

  381. has come to bring freedom

  382. and righteousness

  383. and truth

  384. and therefore

  385. it has to oppose

  386. deception,

  387. lies,

  388. and oppression.

  389. It has to.

  390. Oppression

  391. in Christ's name

  392. is not

  393. the gospel

  394. or Christianity.

  395. Money

  396. under the table

  397. and corruption,

  398. lying,

  399. deceit,

  400. ends always

  401. justifying the means

  402. that is not

  403. Christianity.

  404. True Christianity

  405. will always

  406. bring freedom

  407. and righteousness

  408. and truth.

  409. It will always

  410. have in mind

  411. the glory of God

  412. and the flourishing,

  413. true flourishing

  414. of humanity.

  415. going back to our

  416. modern day,

  417. Wicca has no real

  418. power in comparison

  419. to our Lord.

  420. It is a false

  421. gospel,

  422. it has false

  423. promises

  424. that do not

  425. proclaim God

  426. as sovereign

  427. and creator

  428. of all things.

  429. If some of our

  430. friends and family,

  431. maybe even

  432. some of us,

  433. maybe we're

  434. intrigued by it,

  435. there's something

  436. alluring and

  437. we have

  438. an over

  439. excited curiosity

  440. towards it.

  441. If we have been

  442. or our friends

  443. have been exposed

  444. to this kind

  445. of

  446. Wicca

  447. belief,

  448. just a little

  449. dabble of it,

  450. a little sprinkle

  451. of it,

  452. the Bible

  453. is very clear

  454. that it is

  455. irredeemable

  456. and it is

  457. evil

  458. and ungodly.

  459. But also,

  460. and we'll see

  461. this later on

  462. in the third

  463. point,

  464. that there is

  465. great hope

  466. for somebody

  467. who is engaging

  468. with that.

  469. It is not

  470. the end.

  471. But I want

  472. to suggest

  473. something,

  474. maybe a bit

  475. of a bigger

  476. application

  477. and maybe

  478. one that might

  479. ruffle some

  480. feathers.

  481. So I have

  482. a broad back

  483. when it comes

  484. to criticism

  485. or pushback,

  486. so feel free

  487. to talk

  488. with me

  489. or write

  490. me an email.

  491. I promise

  492. you I won't

  493. get offended.

  494. That's like

  495. a 100%

  496. promise.

  497. We might

  498. spar a little

  499. bit,

  500. but I'll

  501. just put

  502. forward this

  503. to you.

  504. This is a

  505. bigger application

  506. for us

  507. as it extends

  508. into many

  509. of our

  510. workplaces

  511. and is

  512. the defining

  513. mood of our

  514. cultural moment.

  515. And here it is

  516. and hear me out.

  517. Every level

  518. of our government,

  519. our bureaucracy,

  520. our big

  521. corporations

  522. that we use,

  523. that we buy

  524. from,

  525. they employ

  526. equity officers

  527. and inclusion

  528. officers and

  529. diversity officers.

  530. And they

  531. proclaim a

  532. gospel of

  533. sorts that

  534. on all

  535. appearances

  536. seems great.

  537. Equity is a

  538. good thing,

  539. like full

  540. stop.

  541. Inclusion,

  542. it's very

  543. good.

  544. Excluding

  545. people,

  546. being prejudiced

  547. towards people,

  548. it's problematic.

  549. Fairness in

  550. the workplace,

  551. human rights,

  552. all great

  553. things.

  554. However,

  555. the

  556. vocabulary

  557. is used,

  558. the English

  559. vocabulary is

  560. used,

  561. but not the

  562. English

  563. dictionary.

  564. It's

  565. ill-defined.

  566. Inclusion

  567. doesn't mean

  568. true inclusion,

  569. equity doesn't

  570. mean true

  571. equity,

  572. diversity

  573. seems to be

  574. at the

  575. exclusion of

  576. some parts,

  577. so it can't

  578. be full

  579. true

  580. inclusivity

  581. or diversity.

  582. And what it

  583. does is it

  584. promotes a

  585. contrary

  586. worldview that

  587. is antithetical

  588. to the

  589. one true

  590. gospel.

  591. And like

  592. Bar

  593. Jesus,

  594. Elemis,

  595. they influence

  596. politicians,

  597. their staff,

  598. the bureaucracy,

  599. executives,

  600. our cultural

  601. elite,

  602. and they

  603. promote a

  604. vision for

  605. the created

  606. order that

  607. denies that

  608. God has

  609. created all

  610. things and

  611. called it

  612. good.

  613. And that

  614. mankind,

  615. when he

  616. created mankind,

  617. he said,

  618. he didn't

  619. say good,

  620. he said very

  621. good.

  622. So in

  623. effect,

  624. God is

  625. called a

  626. liar and

  627. any deviation

  628. from such

  629. a vision

  630. is not

  631. met with

  632. indifference

  633. but scorn.

  634. I'll give

  635. an example.

  636. In 2021,

  637. the TDSB,

  638. the Toronto

  639. District School

  640. Board,

  641. hired a

  642. diversity

  643. consultant.

  644. It's all

  645. public and

  646. I don't,

  647. so it's

  648. whatever.

  649. I mean,

  650. I know about

  651. it,

  652. you can look

  653. it up.

  654. Her name

  655. was Kiki

  656. Ojo

  657. Thompson.

  658. And in

  659. this meeting,

  660. and it was

  661. public,

  662. like you can

  663. find it on

  664. YouTube,

  665. she was

  666. pushing the

  667. diversity,

  668. equity,

  669. inclusion,

  670. and a

  671. man,

  672. a long-time

  673. teacher,

  674. pushed back.

  675. Not saying

  676. you're wrong,

  677. this is

  678. garbage,

  679. to hell with

  680. you,

  681. just say,

  682. hey,

  683. listen,

  684. can we

  685. talk about

  686. this?

  687. Anyways,

  688. a teacher

  689. in high

  690. standing,

  691. decades of

  692. experience,

  693. also happened

  694. to be an

  695. openly gay

  696. man.

  697. She went

  698. after him.

  699. And she

  700. had it

  701. elevated to

  702. higher-ups,

  703. and in

  704. the end,

  705. this man

  706. pushed back,

  707. she went

  708. at him

  709. hard,

  710. there's a lot

  711. more details,

  712. but for the

  713. sake of time,

  714. he ended up

  715. taking his own

  716. life,

  717. because of

  718. bullying.

  719. There was no

  720. discussion,

  721. there was no

  722. desire for human

  723. flourishing,

  724. I'm not

  725. saying it's

  726. her fault

  727. that that's

  728. what happened,

  729. but the

  730. direction was

  731. never towards

  732. the glory of

  733. God and

  734. the human

  735. flourishing and

  736. treating somebody

  737. with dignity,

  738. but rather

  739. only observing

  740. immutable

  741. characteristics,

  742. not what's

  743. going on in

  744. his heart

  745. or in his

  746. character.

  747. what I am

  748. not suggesting

  749. is that every

  750. DEI officer

  751. that you may

  752. know is

  753. really a

  754. part of a

  755. coven,

  756. is Wicca,

  757. is practicing

  758. some kind of

  759. witchcraft,

  760. I am not

  761. saying that

  762. at all.

  763. But what I am

  764. saying is that

  765. the same

  766. deception and

  767. opposition to

  768. all righteousness,

  769. making crooked

  770. the straight

  771. paths of

  772. God,

  773. the same

  774. character that

  775. characterizes

  776. bar Jesus,

  777. this elemus,

  778. it's alive and

  779. well in

  780. anything that

  781. actively and

  782. obviously opposes

  783. the almighty

  784. triune God and

  785. his gospel of

  786. grace and

  787. looks to go to

  788. war against

  789. it.

  790. Friends,

  791. I am also not

  792. saying don't

  793. fight for

  794. justice in the

  795. workplace.

  796. You see a

  797. problem,

  798. fight for it.

  799. But you see

  800. the difference

  801. there because

  802. what you are

  803. doing isn't

  804. attacking somebody

  805. for the way

  806. they are

  807. immutable,

  808. but you

  809. are going to

  810. war for

  811. somebody's

  812. dignity and

  813. fighting for

  814. the truth that

  815. is affirmed in

  816. God's word,

  817. the common

  818. grace.

  819. I'll say this

  820. as well because

  821. I think this is

  822. important.

  823. I don't want

  824. our church and

  825. I don't want my

  826. ministry to be a

  827. culture war

  828. ministry or

  829. culture war

  830. church.

  831. I just don't

  832. want it.

  833. I think it

  834. is a dangerous

  835. road to go

  836. down.

  837. I don't want

  838. to be a

  839. pawn for

  840. right-wing

  841. politics.

  842. The cultural

  843. right has its

  844. own idols and

  845. false gospels and

  846. when the

  847. scriptures touch

  848. on that,

  849. we're going to

  850. call it out.

  851. We're going to

  852. call it out.

  853. Okay?

  854. However, the

  855. media and our

  856. thought leaders and

  857. our entertainment do

  858. not push us

  859. towards a

  860. right-wing type

  861. of idolatry and

  862. agenda but a

  863. progressive one and

  864. therefore, I want

  865. to call it out.

  866. It is the

  867. cultural air we

  868. breathe.

  869. There is growing

  870. parts of the

  871. internet that are

  872. wildly neo-fascists

  873. and they're growing

  874. and they're getting

  875. very popular but

  876. that's not getting

  877. pushed by CTV or

  878. CBC or 580.

  879. You probably won't

  880. see it that much in

  881. ads that pop up when

  882. you're watching

  883. YouTube.

  884. Or if you're

  885. cheap like our

  886. family and get

  887. the base

  888. subscription of

  889. Netflix and

  890. whatever.

  891. You're not.

  892. It's going to be a

  893. progressive push.

  894. I'll say this as

  895. well.

  896. I don't want to be a

  897. culture warrior but

  898. there certainly is a

  899. war that's happening

  900. and we need just to

  901. be wise about it.

  902. There's a war for

  903. the health of our

  904. families and our

  905. friends and our

  906. workplaces.

  907. Our children

  908. our intellect,

  909. our time.

  910. Let's do a really

  911. interesting conversation

  912. by two educators this

  913. week.

  914. They're Christians but

  915. they just said hey

  916. listen there's a

  917. spiritual battle just

  918. to read a book

  919. these days.

  920. Not the Bible,

  921. just to read a book.

  922. Can you turn the

  923. phone off?

  924. Can you turn the

  925. noise down just to

  926. pick up a book for

  927. 20 minutes?

  928. It's not easy.

  929. There's a war going

  930. on.

  931. And this goes beyond

  932. an internal battle of

  933. doing right or wrong

  934. or exercising self

  935. control.

  936. It goes beyond getting

  937. your preferred candidate

  938. in office.

  939. There are real forces

  940. that seek to make us

  941. less human and that's

  942. the key to all of

  943. this.

  944. To make us less human

  945. and to demean our God

  946. and to draw us away

  947. from love and grace

  948. and goodness that is

  949. found in Jesus Christ

  950. who is the righteous

  951. one and who loves

  952. our souls.

  953. We would be, I would

  954. be foolish to think

  955. otherwise.

  956. So where is there

  957. hope?

  958. Because that can seem

  959. a bit hopeless.

  960. How does the gospel

  961. provide hope?

  962. Are we destined to be

  963. cultural warriors

  964. forever in social

  965. media, media battles?

  966. I hope not.

  967. I pray not.

  968. So what happens next?

  969. How does the gospel

  970. of Christ confront

  971. such deception and

  972. evil and therefore

  973. bring us hope?

  974. Let's read on,

  975. verses 9 to 12.

  976. But Saul, who was

  977. also called Paul,

  978. filled with the Holy

  979. Spirit, looked intently

  980. at him and said,

  981. You son of the devil,

  982. you enemy of all

  983. righteousness, full of

  984. all deceit and

  985. villainy, will you not

  986. stop making crooked

  987. the straight paths of

  988. the Lord?

  989. And now behold the

  990. hand of the Lord,

  991. that is to say God's

  992. judgment, the hand of

  993. the Lord is upon you

  994. and you will be blind

  995. and unable to see the

  996. sun for a time

  997. immediately.

  998. Mist and darkness

  999. fell upon him and

  1000. he went about seeking

  1001. people to lead him

  1002. by the hand.

  1003. Verse 12,

  1004. Then the procouncil,

  1005. that is Sergius Paulus,

  1006. believed, and he saw

  1007. what had occurred,

  1008. for he was astonished

  1009. at the teaching of

  1010. the Lord.

  1011. There's no standoff

  1012. like in the movies.

  1013. There's no epic battle

1014. at the end of the

  1015. trilogy.

  1016. But like Jesus, the

  1017. spirit-filled apostle

  1018. Paul just pronounces

  1019. the Lord's judgment

  1020. and it is so.

  1021. If you remember

  1022. Jesus, he's on the

  1023. boat with the

  1024. disciples.

  1025. The wind and the

  1026. waves are crashing

  1027. down.

  1028. He is sleeping.

1029. They cry out to him.

1030. And what does he say?

  1031. He says, be still.

  1032. He just speaks.

  1033. And it is so.

  1034. It is a judgment.

  1035. We talked about this

1036. way back when we were

  1037. in Mark.

  1038. Wind and the waves

  1039. and the storm

  1040. represents the evil

  1041. forces at work.

  1042. And he just pronounces

  1043. his judgment.

  1044. Be still.

  1045. There's no battle.

  1046. They have to submit

  1047. to him.

1048. And this is what we

  1049. are seeing here.

  1050. That there's a

  1051. submission not to Paul

  1052. but by the Holy

  1053. Spirit that fills him

  1054. up.

  1055. And this man is

  1056. struck blind.

  1057. What we are seeing

  1058. is the outer working

  1059. of an inner reality.

  1060. Because Bar Jesus is

  1061. spiritually blind and

  1062. he is leading people

  1063. into all sorts of

  1064. spiritual blindness.

  1065. And now the judgment

1066. of God is on him so

  1067. that physically he is

  1068. like he is spiritually.

  1069. He tries to deceive

1070. people and now he is

  1071. struggling to find a

  1072. hand to lead him

  1073. here and there.

  1074. I'll say this.

1075. And this is where the

  1076. hope is.

1077. There will always be a

  1078. judgment upon those who

  1079. act in God's name

  1080. or proclaim a competing

  1081. gospel and vision for

  1082. human flourishing that

  1083. is against what the

  1084. scriptures say.

1085. They might persist for a

1086. time but they will not

  1087. persist forever.

1088. God will not stand by

  1089. when people make his

  1090. straight paths crooked.

  1091. It won't happen.

  1092. He won't allow it.

1093. God will not be mocked

1094. nor allow evil to persist

  1095. indefinitely.

1096. And this is where our

  1097. hope is.

  1098. What's interesting here is

  1099. that the physical

  1100. blinding of Bar Jesus

  1101. leads to the spiritual

  1102. awakening of Sergius

  1103. Paulus.

  1104. In our story,

  1105. Sergius Paulus comes to

  1106. faith not simply because

  1107. of the supernatural

1108. event but we see in

  1109. verse 12.

  1110. What does it say?

  1111. The procouncil believed

1112. when he saw what had

  1113. occurred.

  1114. But here it is.

  1115. What the Holy Spirit

  1116. does is he always

  1117. proclaims the message

  1118. and then confirms it

  1119. not necessarily in

  1120. supernatural ways but

  1121. by his spirit making

  1122. alive our souls to

1123. hear and to see so

  1124. to speak spiritually the

  1125. truth of the gospel.

1126. And this is what we are

  1127. seeing with Sergius

  1128. Paulus.

  1129. So what about the

  1130. magician though?

  1131. What about our friends

  1132. that are deep?

  1133. in another form of

  1134. spirituality that

  1135. really is demonic at

1136. its core or a way of

  1137. thinking and a

  1138. worldview that does not

  1139. elevate Christ as king

  1140. but seeks to actually

  1141. dethrone him and

  1142. doesn't see dignity in

  1143. the person but actually

1144. sees the person as less

  1145. than human?

  1146. Where's their hope?

  1147. We're not told what

  1148. happens to Bar Jesus.

  1149. The narrative leaves

  1150. him as blind.

  1151. It's really sad.

  1152. But, but, it's

  1153. interesting that the

  1154. apostle Paul who was

  1155. himself acting as a

  1156. hand of the devil

  1157. trying to destroy the

  1158. church, he meets the

  1159. risen savior.

  1160. And what happens?

  1161. He is struck blind.

  1162. The judgment of the

1163. Lord comes upon him and

  1164. he comes to faith.

  1165. Notice here, verse 11.

  1166. I'm sorry, yeah, verse 11.

1167. The second part of it.

1168. I'll read the whole thing.

1169. And now behold, the hand

1170. of the Lord is upon you.

1171. This is Paul talking to

  1172. Bar Jesus.

1173. And you will be blind, not

1174. forever and unable to see.

1175. Not forever, but for a

  1176. time.

1177. Maybe this is, maybe this is

  1178. a tipping of, of Luke's

1179. tipping of the cap to, to, to what

1180. actually happened with Bar Jesus.

1181. Maybe, like Paul, he came to

  1182. faith.

1183. He, he did away with his

  1184. attacks against the church

  1185. and decided instead to

  1186. humble himself before the

  1187. king.

1188. Could God not have turned this

1189. false prophet who claimed to

1190. be the son of salvation, could

1191. he not have turned him to put

1192. his faith in the son who is

  1193. salvation?

  1194. Could he not have?

1195. Is this too big for God?

  1196. I would say no.

1197. And I can't say, guys, this is

1198. what happened because it's not

  1199. in the narrative.

1200. But I want to say I really,

1201. really, really, really hope it

  1202. can happen.

1203. I believe it can happen.

1204. That it, that it happened.

1205. And that it can happen today.

1206. And this, friends, is why we

1207. proclaim the gospel in obedience

  1208. to the Great Commission.

1209. And this is where I'll wrap

  1210. things up.

1211. What we are seeing in Acts 13

1212. is the fulfillment of Acts

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1213. chapter 1, 8 and the Great

1214. Commission at the end of

  1215. Matthew's gospel account.

1216. That people called by God,

1217. faith in Jesus, filled with the

1218. Holy Spirit, are just bearing

1219. witness to who Jesus is and

  1220. things are transforming.

1221. And churches that think the

  1222. Great Commission and Acts

    Acts 1:8

  1223. chapter 1, verse 8 are optional

1224. are churches that are on, on the

1225. way down a terrible spiral.

1226. And we might be a church, God

  1227. forbid, that, that finds

1228. ourselves in a time where we

  1229. think this is optional.

1230. And we might have the best

1231. catechism, which, by the way, we

1232. had a fantastic catechism this

  1233. morning.

1234. Next week we're on, 930, if you

  1235. want to come.

1236. We've got the best catechism,

  1237. small groups, best everything.

1238. And we think that the Great

1239. Commission and Acts chapter 1,

    Acts 1:8

  1240. verse 8 is optional.

1241. Friends, we are cut off at the

  1242. root.

1243. We are failing to obey Christ.

1244. Let us then proclaim hope and

  1245. truth in the gospel.

1246. So, to wrap things up, are we to

  1247. fear evil?

  1248. No.

1249. Because we serve the almighty,

1250. eternal maker of heaven and

1251. earth, who does not battle our

1252. enemies as they appear to us, but

1253. has already defeated them on the

  1254. cross of Calvary.

1255. Cutting down the power of death,

1256. hell can rage all it wants against

  1257. you.

  1258. Your eternity is secure.

1259. Your joy in Christ is complete.

1260. And there is hope and health and

1261. restoration for our friends and our

1262. family and our loved ones and our

1263. neighbors and our co-workers and

1264. ourselves when we falter or look to

1265. oppose the sun or look to make

1266. crooked the straight paths of God.

1267. So, friends, let us walk in this

1268. truth and proclaim that the Lord is

  1269. Christ.

1270. He has brought us salvation and our

1271. hearts and our souls, they long after

  1272. him.

  1273. Amen.

  1274. Let us pray.

1275. Father, we pray that whatever we do,

1276. your name will be lifted high.

1277. And when we inevitably get in the way,

1278. because even though we are saved, we

1279. are not yet made perfect.

1280. We are growing in holiness, not yet made

  1281. perfectly holy.

1282. When we get in the way, Lord, that you

1283. would be gracious to us and very

1284. obviously but gently just guide us

1285. away from our folly back to you.

1286. And Lord, as we are your people out in

1287. the world, help us to, by your Holy

1288. Spirit, have bravery and to stand for

1289. truth, to stand for your glory, to

1290. elevate the people around us to the

1291. dignity that you have bestowed upon

  1292. them.

1293. Lord, that we would be people that

1294. stand for true justice, that we

  1295. stand for true inclusion.

1296. Lord, thank you so much that your

1297. church from the very beginning wasn't

1298. a monolith of an ethnicity but

1299. included people from all sorts of

  1300. different backgrounds and ethnicities.

1301. And Lord, help us to be about that.

1302. Lord, help us also to be people of

1303. prayer, to not try to do your work

  1304. apart from you.

1305. Lord, that you would fill us afresh

1306. every day with your Holy Spirit as we

1307. turn our faces and seek yours.

1308. We pray all this in Christ's name.

  1309. Amen.
