  1. A while back, I saw an interview with Matt Damon, and he was talking about how he basically

  2. only does action movies now.

  3. And the reason why, I never really knew he did anything but action movies, but he used

  4. to do, I guess, non-action movies.

  5. But why he only does action movies now is because with streaming services, people go

  6. to the movies primarily to see action and big special effects, big kind of epics.

  7. And those are the movies that make money.

  8. So it's changed the industry for him and the industry in general.

  9. And it just got me thinking about how the majority of movies that are in the theaters, there

  10. are fantasy or superhero movies or some kind of big epic good versus evil.

  11. And oftentimes, the plot surrounds a villain who tries to become some kind of all-powerful

  12. being or a god-like person.

  13. That's pretty common.

  14. Never in those movies is a villain satisfied with anything but taking over the entire world

  15. or the entire galaxy or whatever it may be.

  16. In every case, when those finite characters seek to become like the infinite god, nothing

  17. goes well.

  18. They don't become loving and benevolent or just, but rather evil, maniacal, and tyrannical.

  19. Power corrupts, and so it does.

  20. And this is a case in our world as well.

  21. Idiomin, he was the ruler of Uganda for years.

  22. He came with promise, left, and they called him the Hitler of Africa.

  23. Power corrupts.

  24. It's never enough.

  25. And regular people become tyrants when regular people try to become like gods.

  26. Human beings ought not to become gods.

  27. It's something that is germane and key all throughout the Bible whenever human beings fashion themselves

  28. as God's bad things happen.

  29. So what do we make of God becoming man?

  30. If humans shouldn't become God, what happens when God becomes man?

  31. And this is what Christmas is about, the incarnation.

  32. God, the Son of God, the eternal Word, being made flesh.

  33. He doesn't cease to be God, but he becomes fully man.

  34. I bring this up as just a bit of a background because the 4th century church father, Athanasius,

  35. wrote a small book.

  36. It's worth your time.

  37. Maybe you read it every year.

  38. It's excellent.

  39. Apart from scripture, it is the most thorough and worthwhile examination of the incarnation.

  40. It's actually called On the Incarnation.

  41. And among other things that Athanasius says, he says a very provocative and scandalous line.

  42. He says this,

  43. God became man so that man might become God.

  44. What did Athanasius mean by such a provocative statement?

  45. Is this a good development in human history?

  46. Or do we have a closeted heretic here in Athanasius?

  47. Why is it that when man becomes God, or tries to, I should say, things go terribly wrong?

  48. The story of humanity is not one of joy.

  49. There's pockets of joy.

  50. There's beautiful things within the human story.

  51. But by and large, it is a story of angst and frustration.

  52. It goes back to the beginning of creation itself.

  53. A few weeks ago, we had a lessons and carols service.

  54. And if you're unfamiliar with it, that's okay.

  55. It is a service where we sing Christmas carols.

  56. And interspersed with those Christmas carols, we read nine portions of scripture that, in a way,

  57. that's not exhaustive, but in a way tells the entire Christian story leading up to John 1.

  58. We start at Genesis chapter 3, the very beginning, at the fall of man and original sin,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  59. where mankind sins and then the plague of perpetual sin continues on.

  60. So we start in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  61. And we actually end in John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  62. And we see in the biblical story that humanity is plagued with brokenness and sin,

  63. angst and frustration, desire to be like God.

  64. And when they do, things, again, go terribly, terribly wrong.

  65. So the biblical story is one of, among other things,

  66. recounting and examining the darkness of the human condition.

  67. The angst that death is coming and cannot be avoided.

  68. The angst that there is no happy resolution to the story.

  69. That when men and women, but oftentimes men, fashion themselves to be gods,

  70. they become devils instead.

  71. God, in his love and wisdom, sees the brokenness.

  72. Oftentimes, if I start a project and I mess up at the initial kind of bit,

  73. I usually scrap it.

  74. Or I start from the beginning.

  75. I strip down what I've done.

  76. I am not super handy.

  77. I'm not a train wreck either with some hammer and nails.

  78. But seldom do I start a project and it's mistake-free from the beginning to the end.

  79. Seldom, if ever.

  80. So it makes sense to me that God creates everything.

  81. He calls it good.

  82. He creates mankind.

  83. He calls it very good.

  84. And then mankind sins.

  85. In my mind, just hit the reset button.

  86. Start again.

  87. You messed it up.

  88. It's okay.

  89. People mess things up.

  90. God is perfect.

  91. I'm not saying somehow God is not perfect.

  92. But in my mind, you just start again.

  93. You figure it out.

  94. You know?

  95. You regroup.

  96. Okay, it went wrong there.

  97. We're going to adjust.

  98. But instead, we see something different.

  99. The angst, the darkness, the brokenness, the sin, the death.

  100. How does God deal with it?

  101. Well, we see how he deals with it in John 1, verses 1 to 5.

    John 1:1–5

  102. And if you have your Bible, follow along.

  103. We read it already, but it bears repeating.

  104. It says this, verse 1.

  105. In the beginning was the Word.

  106. And the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  107. He was in the beginning with God.

  108. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.

  109. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

  110. Here it is, verse 5.

  111. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  112. The Word, who is God, the Son of God, the Eternal Word, the Creator of all things, the very source of life and light,

  113. does not hit the reset button, but enters into the story itself.

  114. He shines light in the darkness, which is to say that he seeks to fix and restore and redeem.

  115. The incarnation promises that good will triumph over evil, that humanity will not suffer indefinitely in darkness and despair.

  116. It's this beautiful picture of God's mercy and His kindness and His great love for us.

  117. And yet, such a wonderful gift is not embraced by all, for it threatens the status quo.

  118. The thing is, we often enjoy darkness a little too much.

  119. Not because we are necessarily evil, diabolical, tyrannical people,

  120. but because the devil we know sometimes can be better than, in this case, the God we don't know.

  121. We're unfamiliar and therefore uncomfortable with our sin, our brokenness, our angst, the darkness,

  122. being exposed and being healed.

  123. We're going to skip over the portion, verses 6 to 8, that speaks of John the Baptist.

  124. But look with me in verse 9 to 11, and it says this,

  125. The true light which enlightens everyone was coming into the world.

  126. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.

  127. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

  128. Although what Jesus did in the incarnation, and when I say the incarnation,

  129. you can think the entirety of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, his entire ministry,

  130. although it would be for all people, not everyone would experience the light,

  131. for darkness has a hold on the human heart.

  132. Our good and godly desires are all too often disordered because of sin.

  133. So, we want to be loved, but we take that desire to be loved,

  134. and all too often turn it into selfishness.

  135. And we hurt others.

  136. We want to have security, but that desire manifests itself in insatiable greed.

  137. We want to enjoy pleasure, but instead our eyes lust and covet after things that are not ours,

  138. and we ought not to have.

  139. We want to be appreciated.

  140. Again, all these things are very good, but when they get disordered, bad things happen.

  141. We want to be appreciated, but what ends up happening is we develop anger and bitterness

  142. when we're overlooked.

  143. You see, darkness has an interesting hold on our lives,

  144. because there's always bits of light that get distorted,

  145. bits of goodness that become bits of evil.

  146. And what ends up happening is when we reject the light, we claim authority over the light.

  147. We say that the light is really darkness, and the darkness is really light,

  148. and we start to see confusion abound within the human condition.

  149. But what happens when we do embrace the light?

  150. When this creator enters into creation,

  151. and he shines life and light into darkness and death,

  152. what happens when we embrace that?

  153. When we bend a knee to Christ the King,

  154. the very essence of everything good and holy and just and loving.

  155. Look with me, verses 12 and 13.

  156. It says this,

  157. But to all who did receive him,

  158. that is the word, that is Christ,

  159. who believed in his name,

  160. he gave the right to become children of God,

  161. who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh,

  162. nor of the will of man, but born of God.

  163. You see, the God of Scripture, the real and only God,

  164. doesn't interact with mankind to manipulate our affairs,

  165. like Greek gods, or subjugate us,

  166. like the God of Islam,

  167. or get a hold of our hearts,

  168. like the God of secularism and materialism.

  169. But what does he do?

  170. He comes into our experience

  171. to remove our sin and to remedy our death

  172. and conquer the foe of our soul.

  173. The God of Scripture

  174. does not command us to come to him,

  175. but he comes to us,

  176. and he shines the light into every dark corner of our being,

  177. if we would but bend a knee and receive him.

  178. He offers a gift.

  179. Will we say yes?

  180. And what does he do?

  181. He takes humanity upon himself.

  182. And this brings us back to the first part

  183. of that Athanasius provocative statement,

  184. that God became man.

  185. Verse 14 says this,

  186. And the Word became flesh,

  187. and dwelt among us,

  188. and we have seen his glory,

  189. glory as of the only Son from the Father,

  190. full of grace and truth.

  191. You see,

  192. the Word became flesh

  193. in the original language.

  194. It's literally,

  195. the Word

  196. became enfleshed

  197. and then

  198. set up a tent amongst us,

  199. which is to say,

  200. came into the very

  201. existence

  202. that he created.

  203. There is no more,

  204. there's not an aspect

  205. of the human creation

  206. that he didn't enter into.

  207. Everything that it was

  208. to become human,

  209. he became.

  210. God himself,

  211. the light that enlightens everything,

  212. the Word that created all things,

  213. becomes like you and I.

  214. It's scandalous to think.

  215. Literally human flesh,

  216. skin,

  217. muscles,

  218. blood,

  219. hair,

  220. nails,

  221. Jesus had kneecaps

  222. and big toes,

  223. lips,

  224. kidneys.

  225. The Word

  226. became flesh.

  227. Light has taken on humanity

  228. and he dwelt among us.

  229. The incarnation proclaims

  230. the entire light,

  231. life of Christ.

  232. When we gather

  233. on Christmas Day

  234. and of course we think of

  235. the baby in the manger,

  236. but really

  237. we're thinking that God

  238. lived amongst us

  239. and died on our behalf.

  240. It's the full life of Christ.

  241. God became man

  242. yet remained God

  243. and he never stopped

  244. becoming God.

  245. This God

  246. again descends

  247. to earth

  248. to become man

  249. and descends

  250. even further

  251. to the point of death,

  252. dying

  253. as a sinful man

  254. even though

  255. he was without sin.

  256. He did not

  257. take

  258. a death,

  259. did not die

  260. on the cross

  261. taking upon

  262. the sin of himself

  263. but taking upon

  264. our sin.

  265. He died

  266. and was buried

  267. in a borrowed grave

  268. and then he rose again

  269. to new life.

  270. It is a beautiful

  271. picture

  272. but also

  273. a wondrous mystery

  274. how the Word

  275. was made flesh

  276. and how he did this.

  277. And it says

  278. that we are invited

  279. to embrace this.

  280. And what happens

  281. when we embrace it?

  282. We are united

  283. to him.

  284. And this brings us

  285. back to the second part

  286. of Athanasius'

  287. provocative statement.

  288. So if God

  289. became man

  290. he did so

  291. so that man

  292. might become God.

  293. I'll just

  294. spare you

  295. any of the fears

  296. around Athanasius

  297. being a heretic.

  298. He was not.

  299. He was an Orthodox

  300. Christian.

  301. He did not truly

  302. believe that God

  303. would allow

  304. and make a way

  305. for regular

  306. human beings

  307. like you and I

  308. to become

  309. exactly like him.

  310. But he said it

  311. in a way

  312. to articulate

  313. that those

  314. that are in Christ

  315. are united to him.

  316. They become a part

  317. of his mystical body.

  318. They will be made

  319. perfect.

  320. So that one day

  321. even though God

  322. made us

  323. our original fathers

  324. father, mother

  325. Adam and Eve

  326. in the garden

  327. perfect

  328. but they had

  329. the propensity

  330. to sin

  331. the possibility

  332. of sin

  333. one day

  334. we will be made

  335. perfect

  336. and it will be

  337. impossible

  338. for us

  339. to sin.

  340. This is what

  341. Athanasius

  342. is getting at.

  343. We will enjoy

  344. the beauty

  345. and majesty

  346. and glory

  347. of heaven

  348. forever

  349. in the presence

  350. of God himself

  351. enjoying his love

  352. never exhausting

  353. his goodness

  354. being with him

  355. forever

  356. and we will be

  357. transformed

  358. into

  359. his likeness

  360. here on earth.

  361. At least we begin

  362. that process

  363. here on earth.

  364. So what does

  365. it look like

  366. for man

  367. to become

  368. God?

  369. What does

  370. it look like

  371. for us

  372. to grow

  373. in holiness

  374. because Christ

  375. has marked us

  376. out?

  377. We are united

  378. to him.

  379. I'll give a

  380. wonderful example.

  381. I mentioned

  382. Idi Amin

  383. at the beginning

  384. a very horrendous

  385. tyrant of the

  386. 20th century.

  387. I'll talk about

  388. his contemporary

  389. a man named

  390. Bishop Festo

  391. Kavengra.

  392. Bishop Festo

  393. was a Ugandan

  394. and instead

  395. of going

  396. along

  397. with Idi Amin's

  398. evil

  399. instead of

  400. being corrupted

  401. himself

  402. he opposed

  403. Idi Amin.

  404. Him and

  405. a number

  406. of other

  407. bishops

  408. and clerics

  409. were under

  410. they were

  411. on a government

  412. watch list

  413. his archbishop

  414. was actually

  415. dealt with

  416. and it

  417. caused Bishop

  418. Festo

  419. to run away

  420. and he fled

  421. Uganda.

  422. He fled

  423. Uganda

  424. after one

  425. of his

  426. dear friends

  427. was

  428. dispatched.

  429. Bunch of

  430. kids in the

  431. room.

  432. That was

  433. in 1977.

  434. That same

  435. year

  436. he wrote

  437. a book

  438. called

  439. I Love

  440. Idi Amin.

  441. He wrote

  442. that book

  443. the same

  444. year

  445. that his

  446. good friend

  447. was dispatched.

  448. I Love

  449. Idi Amin

  450. and this

  451. is what he

  452. said

  453. when he

  454. was asked

  455. why he

  456. wrote

  457. this

  458. book.

  459. He said

  460. this

  461. quote

  462. the Holy

  463. Spirit

  464. showed

  465. me

  466. that

  467. I

  468. was

  469. getting

  470. hard

  471. in my

  472. spirit

  473. and that

  474. my

  475. hardness

  476. and bitterness

  477. toward those

  478. who were

  479. persecuting

  480. us could

  481. only bring

  482. spiritual loss.

  483. So I

  484. had to ask

  485. for forgiveness

  486. from the

  487. Lord and

  488. for grace

  489. to love

  490. President Amin

  491. even more.

  492. And then he

  493. would go on

  494. to say

  495. we should

  496. lovingly pray

  497. for those

  498. dictators.

  499. We owe

  500. them the

  501. debt of

  502. love for

  503. they are

  504. part of

  505. those

  506. for whom

  507. Christ shed

  508. his precious

  509. blood.

  510. As long

  511. as they

  512. are still

  513. alive they

  514. are still

  515. redeemable.

  516. By the way

  517. he was

  518. called

  519. the Hitler

  520. of Africa.

  521. Pray for

  522. them that

  523. in the end

  524. they may see

  525. a new way

  526. of life

  527. rather than

  528. a way

  529. of death.

  530. God

  531. God became

  532. man so

  533. that man

  534. might become

  535. God or

  536. better yet

  537. so that we

  538. could grow

  539. in Christ

  540. likeness and

  541. extend his

  542. mercy and

  543. grace and

  544. love wherever

  545. we go.

  546. And friends

  547. this is what

  548. it looks

  549. like.

  550. Bishop

  551. Festo would

  552. live in

  553. exile until

  554. Idi Amin

  555. was deposed

  556. and left

  557. Uganda and

  558. he came

  559. back not

  560. necessarily to

  561. a hero's

  562. welcome because

  563. he lived only

  564. a short time

  565. later and

  566. died of

  567. cancer.

  568. But I'm

  569. telling you

  570. this man

  571. this man

  572. lived as

  573. if Jesus

  574. truly came

  575. in the flesh

  576. lived and

  577. died took

  578. away his

  579. sins even

  580. though he

  581. didn't deserve

  582. it and rose

  583. again to new

  584. life.

  585. Bishop

  586. Festo is

  587. united to

  588. Christ.

  589. He has

  590. become like

  591. his savior.

  592. It's a call

  593. for us and

  594. I mean listen

  595. we don't have

  596. to deal with

  597. Idi Amins.

  598. Children might

  599. feel like their

  600. parents are a

  601. bit like a

  602. tyrannical

  603. dictator but

  604. by and large

  605. we're not having

  606. to deal with

  607. this thank

  608. God.

  609. But there are

  610. people in our

  611. lives you might

  612. be one of those

  613. people in

  614. somebody else's

  615. life where you

  616. just need God's

  617. grace to wash

  618. over you.

  619. God's love to

  620. direct you for

  621. God himself to

  622. transform you and

  623. continually transform

  624. you into

  625. Christ's likeness so

  626. that you can

  627. extend the same

  628. ministry that

  629. Christ extended to

  630. you.

  631. John he ends

  632. this portion in

  633. verse 16 and I

  634. didn't read it in

  635. the gospel reading

  636. but I'll read it

  637. for you now.

  638. It says this

  639. John 1 16

  640. and from his

  641. fullness we have

  642. all received grace

  643. upon grace.

  644. friends it takes

  645. nothing less than

  646. the grace of God

  647. at work in our

  648. lives to

  649. transform us into

  650. Christ's likeness.

  651. The incarnation of

  652. Jesus this is what

  653. it's about.

  654. This is what we

  655. celebrate on Christmas

  656. day.

  657. Let us pray.

  658. Father in heaven we

  659. thank you for

  660. wonderful examples

  661. like Bishop

  662. Festo

  663. like his archbishop

  664. like countless

  665. others who were

  666. lost to history

  667. but faithfully

  668. looked to you

  669. and you gave

  670. them the grace

  671. upon grace they

  672. needed to live out

  673. this life and they

  674. are an example to

  675. us of what it

  676. means to be united

  677. to Christ and to

  678. live like him for

  679. his glory.

  680. Lord we pray that

  681. the incarnation that

  682. we are reminded of

  683. that we are

  684. worshipping you for

  685. this morning that it

  686. will so change our

  687. lives and that we

  688. would be conduits of

  689. God's grace and

  690. love and mercy and

  691. joy so that the

  692. darkness that we

  693. experience in our

  694. own lives but also

  695. in the lives and

  696. situations that we

  697. experience in this

  698. life Lord we might

  699. shine your light and

  700. your life and see

  701. the world transform.

  702. Lord thank you for

  703. the incarnation thank

  704. you for your son

  705. Jesus Christ fully man

  706. and fully God.

  707. Amen.
