  1. Before we continue, let's pray.

  2. Father in heaven, we thank you for your word.

  3. ! Lord, we thank you for the testimony of your servant, Paul.

  4. ! We thank you for his example,

  5. but not just example of how he lives,

  6. but really the blueprint of what it means to live a life in Christ.

  7. And that, Lord, it's a testimony too

  8. that this life in Christ is not a drab, dark, boring one.

  9. But rather, it is a joy-filled, exciting life.

  10. And as we continue on, Philippians, Lord,

  11. we ask that you would press it upon our hearts and our minds

  12. of the goodness of Christ, the joyfulness of Christ,

  13. and that we will grow closer to him through your word, by your spirit.

  14. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  15. I have a friend that I've had for a long time.

  16. He is a wonderful guy.

  17. He is, like, the most pessimistic person I've ever met in my life.

  18. Like, he just is.

  19. And I try to kind of buoy his spirits up, not every time.

  20. And often he will accuse me of toxic positivity.

  21. That's what he says.

  22. Not all the time, and it's in jest.

  23. And I'm far from that positive.

  24. I mean, you can talk to my family.

  25. I'm not, like, terrible.

  26. Like, I'm kind of even-keeled, whatever.

  27. Anyways, not about me.

  28. The story is about my friend, okay?

  29. Toxic positivity.

  30. You know, he just wants more commiseration.

  31. And I, at times, just don't want to commiserate with him.

  32. I want him to be happy.

  33. I want him to be joyful, to see the cup half full.

  34. I bring up this story because this section,

  35. the second section of chapter one, Paul is in prison.

  36. And Paul could be accused of toxic positivity here.

  37. I mean, he's in chains.

  38. He is not exactly in the best situation,

  39. which is a bit of an understatement.

  40. And yet, we're going to see that he doesn't complain at all.

  41. I mean, it'll come up in one of my points.

  42. He doesn't even talk about necessarily the facts of his imprisonment.

  43. Instead, he just talks about the positive effects of it.

  44. If I'm in prison, okay, number one, I am, like, visit me.

  45. A lot.

  46. Send me stuff.

  47. Stick money in my account.

  48. I can buy chips and whatever.

  49. But, like, the point is, like, buoy me up.

  50. Because I'm as snake belly low as I would be.

  51. Paul here, again, his positivity is like an 11.

  52. It is, it seems, it seems almost like he's lost a plot.

  53. Or he has a couple screws loose.

  54. That there's something kind of off.

  55. I mean, the people that usually are this kind of positive,

  56. I mean, they might be a bit, maybe narcissistic,

  57. in the sense that, you know, they've done nothing wrong,

  58. or their situation isn't necessarily as bad.

  59. I'm not exactly sure how to describe Paul,

  60. apart from being a bit uncomfortable with him.

  61. I'm a bit uncomfortable with his positivity,

  62. of his cup half fullness.

  63. It's a bit bizarre.

  64. And yet, we see Paul, his focus isn't just a mind over matter,

  65. or his reality isn't just a mind over matter situation.

  66. He is not just in this zen state where he is ignorant of his situation.

  67. Rather, he is seeing it through a completely different lens.

  68. He is focused, not on himself, but on the advancement of the gospel.

  69. The gospel, which is the very good news of Christ,

  70. that Jesus lived, that he died.

  71. He died for our sins in our place.

  72. He was actually killed, actually was buried.

  73. Three days later, actually rose from the grave,

  74. appeared to many, and eventually ascended,

  75. and he is coming again to judge the living and the dead.

  76. That gospel.

  77. That's what Paul is about.

  78. He is about the advancement of that gospel.

  79. So, Paul, being in prison,

  80. he is understanding his life in light of being an instrument of God

  81. to advance the gospel.

  82. This is God's will for Paul's life.

  83. That he would be an instrument for the advancement of the gospel.

  84. And we're going to see that, again, not necessarily exactly like Paul,

  85. but that's also God's will for our lives.

  86. For Paul, this seems like a bit of an unfair situation.

  87. Normally, if I'm doing somebody a favor,

  88. this is maybe not the best example,

  89. if I'm doing somebody a favor,

  90. I don't want to get paid back with a kick in the face.

  91. Paul, it seems like it's a bit of an unfair situation.

  92. He is working and laboring.

  93. He is giving up so much for the gospel and for Christ.

  94. You'd think that he would get a bit of kickback.

  95. He'd get a bit of a cushy situation.

  96. And yet, he is going to live out his days in a Roman prison.

  97. He's going to be released for just a couple years,

  98. find his way back in a Roman prison,

  99. and eventually get executed.

  100. And I would think that Paul might,

  101. at least the human part of him,

  102. I mean, he's fully human.

  103. He's not like Christ, fully human and fully God.

  104. But Paul, the humanity of him would be frustrated.

  105. And yet, and yet,

  106. we're going to see here that Paul is unbelievably joyful.

  107. So much so that theologians will call this letter

  108. the epistle of joy,

  109. written in a Roman prison.

  110. It's really something else.

  111. I mentioned this last week,

  112. but Philippians is a very short letter.

  113. It's about 100 words in the original language,

  114. a bit over 100 words in the Greek.

  115. And joy or rejoice are used some 12 times.

  116. And again, that's a large usage in a very short letter.

  117. Suffice it to say,

  118. Paul is finding himself

  119. exactly where the Lord has him,

  120. even though it on the outside looks horrible,

  121. and yet he is fully joyful.

  122. It's really something.

  123. And it begs the question for us to consider,

  124. how can we experience

  125. genuine and authentic joy

  126. as we obey the Lord?

  127. Because some, for some,

  128. and I put myself in this category,

  129. if I'm being honest about what it means

  130. to obey the Lord,

  131. I'm feeling the weight of it.

  132. I'm feeling the weight of it.

  133. I'm not necessarily immediately thinking joy.

  134. Like, woohoo, incredible,

  135. sign me up for Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre.

  136. Whatever comes,

  137. I'm going to be joyful.

  138. It's not like that.

  139. I'm feeling the weight of it.

  140. Nevertheless, how can we,

  141. I'll ask the question again,

  142. how can we experience

  143. genuine and authentic joy

  144. as we obey the Lord,

  145. especially, especially

  146. when it leads to our suffering

  147. and maybe even our death?

  148. I've broken up this just short section

  149. into three parts

  150. to help us organize our thoughts

  151. and to help us with the flow.

  152. And we'll answer this question

  153. by looking at

  154. three changes that need to happen

  155. if we are to have this kind of authentic joy

  156. in the midst of obeying the Lord

  157. and suffering for it.

  158. The first change

  159. is that we need a change of perspective.

  160. The second thing is

  161. we need a change of priorities.

  162. And I'll just say,

  163. I labored to try to find another P,

  164. so stick with me on this.

  165. And the third change

  166. is a change in what we value

  167. as the ultimate prize.

  168. If that helps you

  169. just to organize your thoughts in this,

  170. fantastic.

  171. So again,

  172. a change in perspective,

  173. a change in priorities,

  174. and then finally,

  175. a change in what we view

  176. as an ultimate prize.

  177. First point,

  178. look with me at verses 12 to 14.

  179. I want you to know,

  180. brothers and sisters,

  181. that what has happened to me

  182. has really served to advance the gospel.

  183. So that it has become known

  184. throughout the whole imperial guard,

  185. that is like

  186. the emperor's

  187. personal group of guards,

  188. and to all

  189. the rest,

  190. the imperial guard,

  191. and to all the rest

  192. that my imprisonment

  193. is for Christ.

  194. Verse 14,

  195. and most of the brothers

  196. having become confident

  197. in the Lord

  198. by my imprisonment

  199. are much more bold

  200. to speak the word

  201. without fear.

  202. Paul begins

  203. the body of his letter.

  204. So last week was the intro.

  205. This is the beginning

  206. of the body of the letter.

  207. Not by detailing

  208. the facts of his imprisonment.

  209. I mean,

  210. the facts,

  211. we've talked about it.

  212. If you've been

  213. tracking with us

  214. through the last portion

  215. of Acts

  216. over the last few months

  217. and then into Philippians,

  218. the facts

  219. of Paul's imprisonment

  220. are that he has been held

  221. almost three years

  222. without trial.

  223. He is chained

  224. at all times

  225. 24-7 to a guard.

  226. Every four to six hours

  227. there's going to be

  228. a shift change.

  229. He can't go to the bathroom

  230. in private.

  231. He can't host

  232. visitors or guests

  233. in private.

  234. He is in

  235. a not great condition.

  236. He is so much so that,

  237. I mean,

  238. the Philippian church,

  239. one of the reasons

  240. why he's writing this letter

  241. is to tell them,

  242. listen,

  243. I'm doing okay.

  244. I'm still alive.

  245. I'm hanging in there.

  246. It's not a great situation.

  247. Paul,

  248. he doesn't begin

  249. with the facts

  250. of his imprisonment.

  251. Rather,

  252. he begins with the effects

  253. of his imprisonment.

  254. The effects

  255. of Paul's imprisonment

  256. have advanced the gospel

  257. in two ways.

  258. Through evangelism,

  259. but also inspiring

  260. the church

  261. to follow suit.

  262. So,

  263. we'll break it down

  264. just really simply,

  265. the first,

  266. evangelism.

  267. looking first

  268. at verse 13

  269. and 14,

  270. or just 13 rather,

  271. again,

  272. remembering that

  273. he has maybe,

  274. what,

  275. four,

  276. six,

  277. four to six

  278. at any time

  279. throughout the day,

  280. different guards

  281. attached to his hip

  282. quite literally.

  283. Over months

  284. and months

  285. and months,

  286. he is just chatting

  287. their face off.

  288. They are sending

  289. guards his way.

  290. And what is he doing?

  291. What does Paul do?

  292. He shares the gospel.

  293. He has a steady

  294. stream of guards

  295. that are coming

  296. to see him,

  297. so much so

  298. that the entire

  299. imperial guard,

  300. which isn't to say

  301. that every last guard

  302. has been assigned

  303. to him

  304. or that he has

  305. interacted with them

  306. personally.

  307. Some estimates

  308. say there's

  309. up to maybe

  310. close to 10,000

  311. imperial guards.

  312. So is it all

  313. 10,000?

  314. Like,

  315. seven to 10,000?

  316. Likely not,

  317. but the point is

  318. is that there is

  319. a buzz about Paul

  320. in the city.

  321. People have heard

  322. about him.

  323. And what do they

  324. hear about?

  325. That his imprisonment

  326. is because of Christ.

  327. He hasn't broken

  328. any Roman law

  329. necessarily.

  330. He hasn't been

  331. convicted of anything.

  332. But he

  333. worships

  334. this man

  335. from

  336. the Galilee

  337. in Judea,

  338. the province of Judea.

  339. And he claims

  340. that that man

  341. rose from the grave.

  342. and that

  343. he didn't just

  344. rise from the grave,

  345. that he is the Messiah

  346. and he is actually

  347. the only God.

  348. And Paul,

  349. he is proclaiming

  350. that even

  351. in prison.

  352. Rome is

  353. abuzz

  354. with

  355. the apostle

  356. Paul.

  357. So,

  358. in many respects,

  359. Paul here,

  360. and this is where

  361. this perspective

  362. change comes in,

  363. Paul doesn't

  364. necessarily see

  365. himself as a Roman

  366. prisoner chained to

  367. a guard.

  368. Rather,

  369. he sees that

  370. a guard is chained

  371. to the slave of Christ.

  372. And as they come through,

  373. there's a new guard

  374. and maybe they've

  375. heard about it,

  376. maybe they're eager

  377. to hear,

  378. maybe they're not

  379. at all.

  380. Either way,

  381. four to six hours

  382. on the man's hip

  383. hearing about the gospel,

  384. hearing about

  385. how they don't have

  386. to carry their sins

  387. any longer,

  388. that the evils

  389. that they have done

  390. as members

  391. of the Roman

  392. imperial guard,

  393. Christ has forgiven it

  394. if they would only

  395. put their faith

  396. and trust in him

  397. every single day,

  398. day in and day out.

  399. And that is

  400. this perspective.

  401. So all of a sudden,

  402. Paul,

  403. whose life is

  404. completely Christ,

  405. he is a slave to Christ,

  406. doesn't see

  407. from his perspective,

  408. oh, woe is me.

  409. He says,

  410. look,

  411. I have a captive audience

  412. and they can't escape me.

  413. Likewise,

  414. his imprisonment

  415. is affecting

  416. most of the Christians.

  417. Idea that the Christians

  418. in the region

  419. or the area

  420. that are hearing

  421. about him,

  422. they are seeing

  423. God's hand at work

  424. in Paul's life

  425. and they are inspired,

  426. their confidence

  427. is growing

  428. and they are proclaiming

  429. Christ with boldness

  430. and with courage.

  431. It says,

  432. without fear.

  433. And this is a wonderful thing.

  434. They have seen

  435. the sovereign hand

  436. of God at work

  437. taking a bad situation

  438. and completely upending it

  439. and seeing it

  440. as rather

  441. a continuation

  442. of Christ's victory.

  443. That even Rome,

  444. even Rome can't squash

  445. out the Christian faith.

  446. The gospel can't be conquered.

  447. Paul's in chains,

  448. not the gospel.

  449. And they're all of a sudden

  450. seeing that

  451. Christ's words

  452. aren't empty,

  453. but they're real.

  454. Notice too

  455. that their courage

  456. and boldness,

  457. it comes after

  458. they have become

  459. confident in the Lord.

  460. And I'll just say this

  461. as a bit of a side point,

  462. which is actually

  463. a huge point.

  464. If I was to come up here

  465. Sunday after Sunday

  466. and just say,

  467. share your faith.

  468. Don't be afraid.

  469. Be bold.

  470. Go out there

  471. and evangelize.

  472. And I didn't

  473. proclaim Christ

  474. in his goodness

  475. and testify

  476. to his fulfilled

  477. word

  478. so that you

  479. did not have

  480. confidence

  481. in the gospel

  482. or in your Savior

  483. setting you up

  484. for failure.

  485. How on earth

  486. can you have

  487. boldness

  488. and courage

  489. without confidence

  490. in Jesus?

  491. I mean,

  492. here's the thing

  493. with the gospel.

  494. If the gospel

  495. is not

  496. a cherished thing

  497. in your life

  498. and if Christ

  499. isn't

  500. completely glorious

  501. and we grow in that

  502. by the way,

  503. it's not necessarily

  504. a switch,

  505. maybe for some,

  506. but if you're not

  507. growing in that,

  508. I mean,

  509. to say,

  510. listen,

  511. go out there

  512. and proclaim

  513. the gospel,

  514. be bold,

  515. maybe for a little bit,

  516. but all of a sudden

  517. we will find out

  518. that smaller things

  519. seem much more daunting

  520. and threatening

  521. that they are

  522. in Christ

  523. who is Lord

  524. overall

  525. starts to shrink

  526. and all of a sudden

  527. things that

  528. ought not

  529. scare you

  530. if you have

  531. confidence in Christ

  532. begin to freak you

  533. out a bit

  534. because you're

  535. putting confidence

  536. not in Christ

  537. but in other things

  538. and proclaiming

  539. the gospel

  540. is always,

  541. always,

  542. again,

  543. in different respects

  544. and to different degrees

  545. but it will always

  546. run counter

  547. to the spirit

  548. of the age,

  549. okay?

  550. There is always

  551. going to be this

  552. tension between

  553. the spirit of the age

  554. and the spirit

  555. of Christ

  556. and there will be

  557. a battle

  558. but here's the thing,

  559. if our confidence

  560. is in Christ

  561. then we know

  562. the battle is won.

  563. We know our Savior

  564. is victorious,

  565. that we are resting

  566. in an already

  567. defeated,

  568. victorious Savior

  569. and a defeated foe.

  570. If we don't have

  571. confidence in Christ

  572. then maybe he's

  573. going to lose

  574. or maybe his word

  575. is going to come true

  576. or maybe,

  577. just maybe,

  578. all of this

  579. is in vain.

  580. I don't want to

  581. put my confidence

  582. in things that are

  583. going to crumble

  584. or are in vain.

  585. So,

  586. when the church

  587. in Rome

  588. sees what's happening

  589. to the Apostle Paul,

  590. they are seeing

  591. the words

  592. and work

  593. of Christ

  594. being proclaimed

  595. and being proven true

  596. and this is giving

  597. them confidence,

  598. then leading them

  599. to boldness,

  600. then leading them

  601. to courage.

  602. They're constantly

  603. seeing Christ

  604. as glorious

  605. and they have

  606. their confidence

  607. in him.

  608. So,

  609. I'll just say this

  610. and then we'll

  611. continue to move on.

  612. Read the testimony

  613. of the Apostle Paul

  614. and get encouraged

  615. but share

  616. with each other,

  617. testify to each other

  618. how the Lord

  619. is at work,

  620. how you've trusted

  621. in him,

  622. little ways,

  623. big ways,

  624. medium ways,

  625. whatever,

  626. but testify,

  627. don't hold it

  628. in for yourself.

  629. Bear witness

  630. to one another,

  631. encourage one another,

  632. read Christian biographies,

  633. get really jacked up

  634. about how the Lord

  635. has been so faithful

  636. to his people

  637. throughout the ages

  638. and build up

  639. your confidence

  640. in the Lord.

  641. Feed on that

  642. and it doesn't mean

  643. you're going to turn

  644. into a world-class

  645. evangelist tomorrow

  646. but I will tell you

  647. your fear

  648. will subside,

  649. it will gradually shrink

  650. and your boldness

  651. will gradually grow.

  652. It's a wonderful way

  653. to live.

  654. Feed on the testimonies

  655. of God's people.

  656. Again,

  657. we see Paul

  658. not focus on the facts

  659. of his imprisonment

  660. but on its effects

  661. and because

  662. his perspective

  663. is reoriented

  664. to understand that

  665. although he is on earth

  666. in a Roman prison,

  667. he is united

  668. to Christ

  669. who has been raised

  670. and is seated

  671. in the heavenly places

  672. so therefore Paul

  673. is up there as well.

  674. Paul articulates this

  675. in a beautiful way

  676. in Colossians

  677. in another letter

  678. he has written

  679. Colossians chapter 3

    Colossians 3:1–4

  680. verses 1 to 4

  681. and this is what he says

  682. in this changed perspective.

  683. If then,

  684. quote,

  685. if then,

  686. you have been

  687. raised with Christ,

  688. seek the things

  689. that are above

  690. where Christ is.

  691. That is to say,

  692. have a different perspective.

  693. Put your gaze upwards.

  694. words.

  695. Christ,

  696. who is seated above,

  697. seated at the right hand

  698. of God,

  699. verse 2,

  700. set your minds

  701. on things that are above,

  702. not on things that are on earth.

  703. For you have died

  704. and your life

  705. is now hidden

  706. with Christ in God.

  707. When Christ,

  708. who is your life,

  709. appears,

  710. then you also will appear

  711. with him in glory.

  712. I mean,

  713. it is a promise

  714. that supersedes

  715. all promises.

  716. Something that you can

  717. really build

  718. a life upon.

  719. So,

  720. Paul

  721. is not

  722. a mind over matter

  723. type of guy.

  724. He is not just

  725. girding up his loins,

  726. digging in deep,

  727. finding his true self

  728. within,

  729. nor is he

  730. just pretending

  731. like this

  732. is not happening,

  733. willfully ignorant

  734. of what is happening

  735. around him.

  736. Rather,

  737. he is recognizing

  738. that through Christ,

  739. even the most difficult

  740. earthly situations

  741. can be transcended.

  742. He isn't transcending

  743. them himself,

  744. but because he is

  745. united to Christ

  746. and Christ has

  747. transcended all,

  748. he too has transcended.

  749. Here's the thing.

  750. We have been elevated

  751. with Christ,

  752. sharing in his victory,

  753. a victory that we

  754. didn't fight,

  755. a victory that we

  756. didn't want,

  757. but a victory that

  758. we get to have

  759. in its fullness,

  760. its hours.

  761. We take hold of it

  762. by faith.

  763. And this is

  764. exactly what

  765. we are seeing

  766. with the Apostle Paul,

  767. this change of perspective,

  768. this reality

  769. transforming

  770. our earthly experience

  771. so that everything

  772. meant for ill

  773. becomes an opportunity

  774. for good.

  775. And this will

  776. lead us to our next section.

  777. As we understand

  778. that the gospel of Christ

  779. is not bound

  780. by Roman shackles

  781. or a job loss

  782. or a sickness

  783. or a diagnosis

  784. or God forbid

  785. a tragedy,

  786. God forbid

  787. a tragedy.

  788. Our perspective

  789. doesn't just change

  790. but so too

  791. our priorities

  792. begin to change.

  793. It's not just that

  794. we see the victory

  795. of Christ

  796. and we have confidence

  797. in it,

  798. we act upon it,

  799. our priorities

  800. begin to change.

  801. This leads us

  802. to our second point.

  803. Look with me

  804. at verses 15

  805. to 18.

  806. Some indeed

  807. preach Christ

  808. from envy and rivalry

  809. but others

  810. from goodwill.

  811. The latter do it

  812. out of love

  813. knowing that I am put here

  814. for the defense

  815. of the gospel

  816. but the former

  817. proclaim Christ

  818. out of selfish ambition

  819. not sincerely

  820. but thinking

  821. to afflict me

  822. in my imprisonment.

  823. What then?

  824. Only that in every way

  825. whether in pretense

  826. or in truth

  827. Christ is proclaimed

  828. and in that

  829. I rejoice.

  830. There's that joy word

  831. in that I rejoice.

  832. Not only is the apostle

  833. in this very adverse situation

  834. but he has also

  835. been made aware

  836. that there's some

  837. bad characters

  838. that are trying

  839. to inflict

  840. additional sufferings

  841. upon him

  842. and they are motivated

  843. from selfish ambition.

  844. There's considerable debate

  845. about who these people are.

  846. I mean not much

  847. is not much light

  848. has been shed upon them

  849. who they could be.

  850. Are they rival

  851. Christian leaders

  852. that are more or less

  853. orthodox

  854. but they are selfish

  855. they want to

  856. supersede Paul

  857. in being a leader

  858. in the church?

  859. Were they

  860. some young pastors

  861. that just want

  862. the old guard

  863. to retire

  864. so they can take over?

  865. We're not sure.

  866. It's difficult to know.

  867. It may be an important point

  868. for us this morning

  869. it's really secondary

  870. to their motivation.

  871. They are unlike

  872. those evangelists

  873. who continue

  874. proclaiming Christ

  875. out of pure

  876. and loving motivations.

  877. Rather they possess

  878. selfish ambition

  879. and view Paul

  880. and his situation

  881. as an unjust way

  882. to advance

  883. however they are

  884. looking to advance.

  885. Remember

  886. and this is

  887. the incredible thing here

  888. and shows

  889. how Paul's priorities

  890. are just much different

  891. than likely you or I.

  892. He is writing

  893. to the Philippian church

  894. the first church

  895. in Europe

  896. the first church

  897. that he planted

  898. in Europe.

  899. They have supported him

  900. from day one.

  901. They have sent money

  902. to him.

  903. They have sent money

  904. to Jerusalem.

  905. They are concerned

  906. about his well-being.

  907. Paul with the situation

  908. you think maybe

  909. if he was so concerned

  910. with this

  911. he is writing a letter

  912. listen I am sure

  913. you have a couple

  914. lawyers that can

  915. plead my case.

  916. Maybe some

  917. strong guys

  918. that can pay a visit

  919. and say listen

  920. should you lay

  921. up Paul

  922. a little bit.

  923. But Paul here

  924. again

  925. his priority

  926. isn't self-preservation.

  927. It is not.

  928. It is not

  929. even to clear

  930. his name.

  931. Instead

  932. Paul

  933. who has this

  934. heavenly perspective

  935. he sees beyond

  936. the immediate problem

  937. he is recognizing

  938. that their attempts

  939. to afflict him

  940. are actually

  941. doing exactly

  942. what he wants.

  943. Exactly what his

  944. priorities are.

  945. The proclamation

  946. of the gospel.

  947. They are continuing

  948. this spread

  949. this buzz

  950. of

  951. throughout Rome

  952. of Christ

  953. being the reason

  954. of Paul's

  955. imprisonment.

  956. And this by the way

  957. isn't to say that

  958. Paul

  959. is just always

  960. going to show his belly

  961. in situations like this.

  962. Paul is

  963. I mean he is used

  964. to

  965. confronting.

  966. I mean he is

  967. not afraid

  968. to confront people.

  969. He is going to

  970. push back

  971. against people

  972. that are trying

  973. to

  974. take

  975. non-Jewish

  976. believers

  977. and make them

  978. Jewish

  979. so that they can

  980. then follow Jesus

  981. the Judaizers.

  982. He is pushing back

  983. against them

  984. in other parts

  985. of the New Testament.

  986. He is confronting

  987. Peter.

  988. Paul confronts

  989. people.

  990. He is

  991. again not going

  992. to show his belly

  993. but his priority

  994. isn't self-preservation

  995. to somehow

  996. keep his own

  997. reputation

  998. nice and high.

  999. It's always

  1000. always always

  1001. about the advancement

  1002. of the gospel.

  1003. His priority

  1004. is about Christ

  1005. and his glory

  1006. and his renown

  1007. and the furthering

  1008. of evangelism.

  1009. In this case

  1010. he doesn't have

  1011. to defend himself

1012. because what is he seeing?

  1013. The gospel continues

  1014. to go out.

  1015. Okay I don't care.

  1016. I mean they're

  1017. calling me names.

1018. They're trying to thwart me.

  1019. It's not working.

1020. Why am I going to

  1021. spend the energy

1022. to clear my own name

  1023. when Christ

  1024. will vindicate me

1025. at the end of the day?

1026. You can't really see this

  1027. in the original language

  1028. and I certainly

  1029. didn't see this

  1030. but in my studying

  1031. all the commentators

  1032. that I reference

  1033. they say there's

  1034. allusions to

  1035. a portion of Job

  1036. where Job

  1037. he is trusting

  1038. that God himself

  1039. will vindicate him

  1040. in light of slander.

  1041. And it seems

  1042. that that's what's

  1043. happening with Paul

  1044. but Paul here

  1045. is like

  1046. no what is happening

  1047. is actually

  1048. a very good thing.

1049. It is a very good thing

  1050. that we're seeing.

  1051. And if my name

  1052. gets slandered

1053. in the midst of it

  1054. I'll be okay.

  1055. I'll be okay.

  1056. Christ has saved me.

  1057. Remember I am

  1058. seated with him.

  1059. I am in prison

1060. but I am more free

  1061. than anyone

  1062. in the world

  1063. because I am

  1064. in Christ Jesus.

  1065. So Paul

  1066. he is not pushing

  1067. back in this situation.

  1068. His priorities

  1069. are crystal clear

  1070. and laser focused.

  1071. It reminds me

  1072. of Genesis chapter 50.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  1073. If you know

  1074. the story of Joseph

1075. I think it might be

  1076. just one of the

  1077. most beautiful stories

  1078. of how God

  1079. takes all kinds

  1080. of crazy

  1081. sinful

  1082. evil actions

  1083. of human beings

  1084. and works them out

  1085. for his glory.

1086. If you know the story

  1087. this will be familiar

  1088. if not

  1089. I'll try to

  1090. nutshell it.

  1091. Joseph

  1092. he is

  1093. one of the youngest

  1094. children

  1095. of Jacob

  1096. and he is

  1097. one of his favorites

  1098. and he is

  1099. kind of doted over

  1100. and as such

  1101. his brothers

  1102. in their jealousy

  1103. try to kill him

  1104. and long

  1105. story made short

  1106. he finds his way

  1107. as a slave

  1108. in Egypt

  1109. and eventually

  1110. becomes a prime minister

  1111. of Egypt

  1112. the second in command

  1113. only the pharaoh

  1114. is above him

  1115. and he

  1116. saves

  1117. countless lives

  1118. when there's

  1119. a horrible famine.

  1120. And his brothers

  1121. realize who he is

  1122. after Joseph

  1123. tells them

  1124. that it's me

  1125. Joseph

  1126. and they're afraid

  1127. that Joseph's

  1128. going to kill him.

  1129. And then in

  1130. Genesis 50

    Genesis 50:20

  1131. verse 20

  1132. Joseph says to them

  1133. what you intended

  1134. for evil

  1135. the Lord

  1136. intended for good.

  1137. I have no idea

  1138. how the sovereignty

  1139. of the Lord

  1140. works out

  1141. but it's clear

  1142. that God

  1143. has been at work

  1144. through all the

  1145. crazy evil

  1146. and

  1147. terrible

  1148. betrayals

  1149. that he

  1150. experienced

  1151. and there's

  1152. something of that

  1153. here in the text.

  1154. We have

  1155. these

  1156. really

  1157. ill

  1158. intentioned

  1159. people

  1160. whether they're

  1161. true believers

  1162. or not

  1163. they're trying to

  1164. thwart Paul

  1165. and God

  1166. is taking

  1167. their evil

  1168. and making it

  1169. work out for good.

  1170. And here is where

  1171. we trust in the

  1172. sovereignty of God

  1173. that God

  1174. has said

  1175. that he

  1176. will have

  1177. the final victory

  1178. and that the

  1179. victory is already

  1180. won

  1181. and that

  1182. at the end

  1183. of the age

  1184. every knee

  1185. will bow

  1186. and every tongue

  1187. will confess

  1188. that Jesus

  1189. Christ is Lord

  1190. and we are

  1191. seeing it

  1192. that nothing

  1193. can thwart

  1194. what is happening

  1195. with the apostle

  1196. Paul

  1197. nothing can thwart

  1198. the gospel

  1199. even if he is

  1200. afflicted and

  1201. wrongfully

  1202. portrayed

  1203. Paul will

  1204. allow it

  1205. his priorities

  1206. are the gospel

  1207. and he is

  1208. trusting in

  1209. God's

  1210. sovereign

  1211. hand

  1212. so

  1213. in light

  1214. of that

  1215. opposition

  1216. becomes an

  1217. opportunity

  1218. and I think

  1219. it's the case

  1220. for us

  1221. when we are

  1222. opposed

  1223. it is an

  1224. opportunity

  1225. I won't go

  1226. into the details

  1227. that a situation

  1228. happened last

  1229. Sunday

  1230. and it seemed

  1231. like it was

  1232. a potential

  1233. like huge

  1234. problem

  1235. and yet

  1236. it seems like

  1237. it's opening

  1238. a door up

  1239. for the gospel

  1240. every opposition

  1241. with Christ

  1242. becomes an

  1243. opportunity

  1244. so it's

  1245. important to

  1246. restate an

  1247. observation

  1248. from the

  1249. previous post

  1250. the previous

  1251. point rather

  1252. that confidence

  1253. in God

  1254. again

  1255. with all of

  1256. this

  1257. it has to

  1258. precede such

  1259. boldness and

  1260. assurance

  1261. that we have

  1262. to have

  1263. confidence

  1264. that God

  1265. is at work

  1266. and his

  1267. word is

  1268. true

  1269. furthermore

  1270. this change

  1271. in priority

  1272. must stem

  1273. from a change

  1274. in perspective

  1275. we can't

  1276. just will

  1277. ourselves

  1278. to have

  1279. a new

  1280. set of

  1281. priorities

  1282. if our

  1283. perspective

  1284. isn't upon

  1285. Christ

  1286. so as we

  1287. transition to

  1288. our third

  1289. and final

  1290. point

  1291. we need

  1292. to consider

  1293. that

  1294. the person

  1295. who grows

  1296. in cherishing

  1297. Christ

  1298. it is

  1299. not

  1300. it is

  1301. it is

  1302. not

  1303. a

  1304. conviction

  1305. a sentence

  1306. for a

  1307. dull

  1308. and heavy

  1309. and

  1310. difficult

  1311. life

  1312. but rather

  1313. a joyful

  1314. one

  1315. so look at

  1316. verse 18

  1317. again

  1318. in light

  1319. of all

  1320. that is

  1321. happening

  1322. what does

  1323. Paul say

  1324. what then

  1325. actually we'll

  1326. go back to

  1327. 17

  1328. the former

  1329. proclaimed

  1330. Christ

  1331. of selfish

  1332. ambition

  1333. not sincerely

  1334. but thinking

  1335. to afflict

  1336. me

  1337. in my

  1338. imprisonment

  1339. verse 18

  1340. what then

  1341. only that

  1342. in every

  1343. way

  1344. whether in

  1345. pretense

  1346. or in

  1347. truth

  1348. Christ

  1349. is

  1350. proclaimed

  1351. and in

  1352. that

  1353. I

  1354. rejoice

  1355. we are

  1356. seeing

  1357. once again

  1358. Paul

  1359. he is

  1360. joyful

  1361. and it's

  1362. just oozing

  1363. out of him

  1364. he is

  1365. overflowing

  1366. with joy

  1367. so that the

  1368. purpose

  1369. of Paul's

  1370. life

  1371. is no longer

  1372. himself

  1373. his priorities

  1374. have shifted

  1375. he is not

  1376. trying to

  1377. gain his

  1378. life

  1379. instead

  1380. Paul has

  1381. lost his

  1382. life for

  1383. the sake

  1384. of Christ

  1385. and in

  1386. doing so

  1387. he has

  1388. gained it

  1389. these are

  1390. words of

  1391. Jesus

  1392. himself

  1393. so let's

  1394. look at

  1395. our third

  1396. and final

  1397. point

  1398. that

  1399. if we are

  1400. to live

  1401. this joyful

  1402. obedient

  1403. life in

  1404. Christ

  1405. we need

  1406. to change

  1407. what we

  1408. value

  1409. as

  1410. the

  1411. ultimate

  1412. prize

  1413. we'll

  1414. start at

  1415. the last

  1416. portion

  1417. of verse

  1418. 18

  1419. and then

  1420. read to

  1421. 26

  1422. yes

  1423. and I

  1424. will

  1425. rejoice

  1426. for I

  1427. know

  1428. that

  1429. through

  1430. your

  1431. prayers

  1432. and the

  1433. help

  1434. of

  1435. the

  1436. spirit

  1437. of

  1438. Jesus

  1439. Christ

  1440. this

  1441. will

  1442. turn out

  1443. for my

  1444. deliverance

  1445. as it

  1446. is my

  1447. eager

  1448. expectation

  1449. and hope

  1450. that I

  1451. will not

  1452. be at

  1453. all ashamed

  1454. but that

  1455. with full

  1456. courage

  1457. now as

  1458. always

  1459. Christ

  1460. will be

  1461. honored

  1462. in my

  1463. body

  1464. whether

  1465. by life

  1466. or by

  1467. death

  1468. verse 21

  1469. might be

  1470. familiar to

  1471. some of

  1472. you

  1473. for to

  1474. me

  1475. to live

  1476. is Christ

  1477. and to

  1478. die

  1479. is gain

  1480. if I

  1481. am to

  1482. live

  1483. in the

  1484. flesh

  1485. that

  1486. means

  1487. fruitful

  1488. labor

  1489. for me

  1490. yet

  1491. which

  1492. I

  1493. shall

  1494. choose

  1495. I

  1496. cannot

  1497. tell

  1498. I

  1499. am

  1500. hard

  1501. pressed

  1502. between

  1503. the

  1504. two

  1505. my desire

  1506. is to

  1507. depart

  1508. and be

  1509. with

  1510. Christ

  1511. for that

  1512. is far

  1513. better

  1514. but to

  1515. remain

  1516. in the

  1517. flesh

  1518. is more

  1519. necessary

  1520. on your

  1521. account

  1522. convinced

  1523. of this

  1524. I know

  1525. that I

  1526. will

  1527. remain

  1528. and

  1529. continue

  1530. with

  1531. you

  1532. with

  1533. you

  1534. all

  1535. for your

  1536. progress

  1537. and joy

  1538. in the

  1539. faith

  1540. so that

  1541. in

  1542. me

  1543. you

  1544. may

  1545. have

  1546. ample

  1547. cause

  1548. to

  1549. glory

  1550. in

  1551. Christ

  1552. Jesus

  1553. because

  1554. of

  1555. my

  1556. coming

  1557. to

  1558. you

  1559. again

  1560. Paul

  1561. expands

  1562. on his

  1563. posture

  1564. of

  1565. joy

  1566. from

  1567. the

  1568. previous

  1569. section

  1570. as he

  1571. contemplates

  1572. what his

  1573. deliverance

  1574. from prison

  1575. might look

  1576. like

  1577. and by

  1578. the way

  1579. he

  1580. is convinced

  1581. he will

  1582. be delivered

  1583. it's

  1584. a guarantee

  1585. for him

  1586. deliverance

  1587. might look

  1588. two

  1589. different

  1590. ways

  1591. either

  1592. off

  1593. with his

  1594. head

  1595. but then

  1596. he'll

  1597. be in

  1598. glory

  1599. with

  1600. Christ

  1601. no more

  1602. chains

  1603. no more

  1604. headaches

  1605. he'll

  1606. be with

  1607. Christ

  1608. but he

  1609. might be

  1610. actually

  1611. delivered

  1612. out of

  1613. prison

  1614. so that

  1615. he continues

  1616. the ministry

  1617. of Christ

  1618. for Paul

  1619. there's

  1620. two

  1621. possibilities

  1622. and it

  1623. sounds like

  1624. he is

  1625. by the

  1626. way

  1627. like

  1628. this is

  1629. up to

  1630. him

  1631. whether

  1632. he will

  1633. be

  1634. like

  1635. he's

  1636. the one

  1637. who's

  1638. going to

  1639. decide

  1640. whether

  1641. he goes

  1642. to

  1643. Christ

  1644. or

  1645. he

  1646. will

  1647. be

  1648. released

  1649. it's

  1650. not

  1651. the

  1652. case

  1653. at

  1654. all

  1655. but

  1656. he

  1657. is

  1658. kind

  1659. of

  1660. wrestling

  1661. with

  1662. this

  1663. reality

  1664. in

  1665. such a

  1666. way

  1667. as to

  1668. draw

  1669. in

  1670. the

  1671. Philippians

  1672. to

  1673. his

  1674. mentality

  1675. into

  1676. what

  1677. he

  1678. prizes

  1679. most

  1680. of

  1681. all

  1682. as if

  1683. to

  1684. say

  1685. ultimately

  1686. it is

  1687. Christ

  1688. and to

  1689. be in

  1690. his

  1691. presence

  1692. but

  1693. really

  1694. it's

  1695. to

  1696. submit

  1697. to

  1698. his

  1699. will

  1700. that's

  1701. what

  1702. Paul

  1703. is

  1704. saying

  1705. in

  1706. this

  1707. section

  1708. I

  1709. don't

  1710. know

  1711. what

  1712. to

  1713. choose

  1714. I

  1715. mean

  1716. I

  1717. could

  1718. go

  1719. to

  1720. Christ

  1721. it

  1722. would

  1723. be

  1724. unbelievable

  1725. or I

  1726. can

  1727. continue

  1728. on

  1729. for

  1730. your

  1731. sake

  1732. so

  1733. that

  1734. your

  1735. joy

  1736. will

  1737. continue

  1738. to

  1739. grow

  1740. as

  1741. you

  1742. progress

  1743. in

  1744. the

  1745. gospel

  1746. what

  1747. can

  1748. I

  1749. choose

  1750. both

  1751. are

  1752. fantastic

  1753. which

  1754. is

  1755. to

  1756. say

  1757. Lord

  1758. not

  1759. my

  1760. will

  1761. be

  1762. done

  1763. but

  1764. yours

  1765. Paul

  1766. is

  1767. sure

  1768. that

  1769. he

  1770. will

  1771. be

  1772. delivered

  1773. but

  1774. how

  1775. he

  1776. is

  1777. wrestling

  1778. and

  1779. man

  1780. is

  1781. he

  1782. ever

  1783. wrestling

  1784. I

  1785. say

  1786. this

  1787. it

  1788. is

  1789. a

  1790. good

  1791. thing

  1792. to

  1793. wrestle

  1794. with

  1795. the

  1796. Lord

  1797. but

  1798. ultimately

  1799. we

  1800. are

  1801. allowed

  1802. to

  1803. ache

  1804. after

  1805. glory

  1806. we

  1807. are

  1808. allowed

  1809. to

  1810. ache

  1811. after

  1812. heaven

  1813. especially

  1814. if we've

  1815. gone

  1816. through

  1817. some

  1818. loss

  1819. or

  1820. there's

  1821. been

  1822. a lot

  1823. of

  1824. difficulty

  1825. in

  1826. this

  1827. life

  1828. it

  1829. is

  1830. not

  1831. a

  1832. bad

  1833. thing

  1834. to

  1835. say

  1836. Lord

  1837. I

  1838. just

  1839. want

  1840. to

  1841. be

  1842. with

  1843. you

  1844. just

  1845. take

  1846. me

  1847. tonight

  1848. I

  1849. don't

  1850. know

  1851. I

  1852. don't

  1853. think

  1854. that's

  1855. a

  1856. bad

  1857. thing

  1858. it

  1859. would

  1860. seem

  1861. that

  1862. for

  1863. Paul

  1864. it's

  1865. not

  1866. a

  1867. bad

  1868. thing

  1869. and

  1870. by

  1871. the

  1872. way

  1873. I

  1874. don't

  1875. think

  1876. that's

  1877. a

  1878. suicidal

  1879. ideation

  1880. he

  1881. just wants

  1882. to be

  1883. with

  1884. Jesus

  1885. it's

  1886. a good

  1887. thing

  1888. to

  1889. ache

  1890. after

  1891. the

  1892. Lord

  1893. but

  1894. he

  1895. is

  1896. ultimately

  1897. saying

  1898. that

  1899. my

  1900. prize

  1901. my

  1902. prize

  1903. isn't

  1904. my

  1905. own

  1906. life

  1907. but

  1908. it

  1909. is

  1910. Christ

  1911. and

  1912. his

  1913. glory

  1914. and

  1915. if

  1916. it

  1917. is

  1918. it

  1919. sake

  1920. of

  1921. others

  1922. and

  1923. Paul

  1924. even

  1925. says

  1926. in

  1927. verse

  1928. 20

  1929. his

  1930. heart

  1931. is

  1932. his

  1933. eager

  1934. expectation

  1935. his

  1936. heart

  1937. and

  1938. hope

  1939. that

  1940. I

  1941. will

  1942. not

  1943. at

  1944. all

  1945. be

  1946. ashamed

  1947. but

  1948. that

  1949. with

  1950. full

  1951. courage

  1952. now

  1953. as

  1954. always

  1955. Christ

  1956. will

  1957. be

  1958. honored

  1959. in

  1960. my

  1961. body

  1962. whether

  1963. by

  1964. life

  1965. or

  1966. by

  1967. death

  1968. that

  1969. my

  1970. life

  1971. will

  1972. not

  1973. be

  1974. my

  1975. own

  1976. that

  1977. I

  1978. will

  1979. not

  1980. be

  1981. ashamed

  1982. that

  1983. I

  1984. will

  1985. be

  1986. courageous

  1987. my

  1988. perspective

  1989. it

  1990. is

  1991. a

  1992. daunting

  1993. and

  1994. scary

  1995. thing

  1996. to

  1997. live

  1998. for

  1999. others

  2000. but

  2001. I

  2002. will

  2003. say

  2004. it

  2005. is

  2006. more

  2007. scary

  2008. to

  2009. know

  2010. what

  2011. you

  2012. need

  2013. to

  2014. do

  2015. and

  2016. lack

  2017. the

  2018. courage

  2019. and

  2020. feel

  2021. the

  2022. pain

  2023. of

  2024. cowardice

  2025. and

  2026. by

  2027. the

  2028. way

  2029. Christ

  2030. will

  2031. forgive

  2032. you

  2033. if

  2034. you

  2035. come

  2036. to

  2037. him

  2038. but

  2039. if

  2040. you

  2041. have

  2042. ever

  2043. felt

  2044. like

  2045. you

  2046. knew

  2047. what

  2048. to

  2049. do

  2050. and

  2051. you

  2052. didn't

  2053. do

  2054. it

  2055. and

  2056. you

  2057. felt

  2058. like

  2059. a

  2060. coward

  2061. you

  2062. know

  2063. that

  2064. that

  2065. thing

  2066. is

  2067. a

  2068. thing

  2069. I'm

  2070. reminded

  2071. of

  2072. maybe

  2073. one

  2074. of

  2075. the

  2076. best

  2077. movies

  2078. of

  2079. all

  2080. time

  2081. Saving

  2082. Private

  2083. Ryan

  2084. there's

  2085. a

  2086. scene

  2087. at

  2088. the

  2089. end

  2090. where

  2091. up

  2092. them

  2093. !

  2094. if you

  2095. know

  2096. the

  2097. story

  2098. his

  2099. courage

  2100. left

  2101. him

  2102. and

  2103. because

  2104. of

  2105. that

  2106. his

  2107. comrade

  2108. was

  2109. killed

  2110. by a

  2111. German

  2112. and he

  2113. wept

  2114. the

  2115. cowardice

  2116. washed

  2117. over

  2118. him

  2119. and he

  2120. was

  2121. undone

  2122. by how

  2123. cowardly

  2124. he was

  2125. however

  2126. Gary

  2127. living

  2128. for

  2129. Christ

  2130. might

  2131. seem

  2132. the

  2133. pain

  2134. of

  2135. cowardice

  2136. friends

  2137. it

  2138. will

  2139. sting

  2140. so

  2141. much

  2142. more

  2143. than

  2144. any

  2145. physical

  2146. pain

  2147. that

  2148. you

  2149. might

  2150. experience

  2151. any

  2152. loss

  2153. that

  2154. you

  2155. might

  2156. have

  2157. to

  2158. endure

  2159. and

  2160. again

  2161. this

  2162. isn't

  2163. gird

  2164. up

  2165. your

  2166. loins

  2167. this

  2168. is

  2169. again

  2170. in

  2171. light

  2172. of

  2173. having

  2174. a

  2175. changed

  2176. perspective

  2177. and

  2178. having

  2179. changed

  2180. priorities

  2181. and

  2182. cherishing

  2183. and

  2184. beholding

  2185. Christ

  2186. right

  2187. that

  2188. that courage

  2189. comes

  2190. from

  2191. having

  2192. confidence

  2193. in

  2194. Jesus

  2195. but

  2196. if you

  2197. know

  2198. what to

  2199. do

  2200. do

  2201. it

  2202. and ask

  2203. God

  2204. for

  2205. strength

  2206. and if

  2207. you

  2208. fail

  2209. ask

  2210. for

  2211. forgiveness

  2212. and move

  2213. on

  2214. I will

  2215. tell you

  2216. it will

  2217. be a

  2218. life

  2219. that is

  2220. totally

  2221. worth

  2222. living

  2223. and I

  2224. think

  2225. one of

  2226. the

  2227. things

  2228. that

  2229. holds

  2230. us

  2231. back

  2232. from

  2233. living

  2234. this

  2235. life

  2236. for

  2237. Christ

  2238. is that

  2239. we

  2240. put

  2241. much

  2242. value

  2243. on

  2244. this

  2245. life

  2246. as if

  2247. there

  2248. is not

  2249. a life

  2250. to come

  2251. as if

  2252. there

  2253. is not

  2254. glory

  2255. to be

  2256. experienced

  2257. in

  2258. heaven

  2259. so that

  2260. this

  2261. life

  2262. if

  2263. that

  2264. doesn't

  2265. exist

  2266. then

  2267. this

  2268. life

  2269. has

  2270. to

  2271. be

  2272. heaven

  2273. it

  2274. has

  2275. to

  2276. heaven

  2277. has

  2278. to

  2279. be

  2280. we

  2281. have

  2282. to

  2283. experience

  2284. some

  2285. kind

  2286. of

  2287. heaven

  2288. so it

  2289. has

  2290. to

  2291. be

  2292. this

  2293. life

  2294. but

  2295. that

  2296. is

  2297. as I was

  2298. talking to

  2299. Christine

  2300. about this

  2301. earlier

  2302. that is

  2303. a recipe

  2304. for

  2305. discontentment

  2306. and what

  2307. that will

  2308. mean

  2309. is

  2310. we will

  2311. treat

  2312. the

  2313. things

  2314. of

  2315. this

  2316. earth

  2317. as if

  2318. they are

  2319. eternal

  2320. things

  2321. and we

  2322. will

  2323. tear

  2324. them

  2325. apart

  2326. a bit

  2327. of a

  2328. funny

  2329. thing

  2330. that

  2331. came

  2332. to

  2333. mind

  2334. when

  2335. I

  2336. was

  2337. thinking

  2338. of

  2339. this

  2340. if

  2341. heaven

  2342. doesn't

  2343. exist

  2344. and we

  2345. put

  2346. all

  2347. of

  2348. our

  2349. attention

  2350. here

  2351. on

  2352. earth

  2353. then

  2354. the

  2355. things

  2356. that

  2357. are

  2358. meant

  2359. to

  2360. carry

  2361. just

  2362. a

  2363. regular

  2364. burden

  2365. of

  2366. meaning

  2367. but

  2368. we

  2369. put

  2370. on

  2371. eternal

  2372. meaning

  2373. it's

  2374. like

  2375. you

  2376. guys

  2377. remember

  2378. Looney

  2379. Toons

  2380. with

  2381. the

  2382. abominable

  2383. snowman

  2384. and how

  2385. he would

  2386. grab

  2387. Daffy

  2388. or

  2389. bugs

  2390. and I'm

  2391. going to

  2392. love you

  2393. and I'm

  2394. going to

  2395. kiss

  2396. you

  2397. and he's

  2398. trying to

  2399. be nice

  2400. and soft

  2401. but he's

  2402. ripping

  2403. them apart

  2404. and abusing

  2405. them

  2406. and mauling

  2407. them

  2408. and crushing

  2409. them

  2410. I think

  2411. that's what

  2412. we potentially

  2413. risk

  2414. if we

  2415. treat this

  2416. world

  2417. like it's

  2418. heaven

  2419. eternal

  2420. this world

  2421. is not meant

  2422. to

  2423. your spouse

  2424. your children

  2425. your friends

  2426. your job

  2427. your family

  2428. the things

  2429. in this world

  2430. they're not

  2431. made to be

  2432. to find

  2433. your eternal

  2434. meaning

  2435. only Christ

  2436. can bear

  2437. that kind

  2438. of weight

  2439. that kind

  2440. of responsibility

  2441. and you

  2442. will find

  2443. yourself

  2444. perpetually

  2445. discontent

  2446. with this

  2447. world

  2448. but if

  2449. your prize

  2450. is Christ

  2451. if you

  2452. cherish

  2453. him

  2454. then you

  2455. will have

  2456. that perspective

  2457. change

  2458. you will have

  2459. that priority

  2460. change

  2461. you will have

  2462. that boldness

  2463. and that you

  2464. will see

  2465. that the real

  2466. prize in life

  2467. is Jesus

  2468. himself

  2469. we'll end

  2470. with this

  2471. what is so

  2472. incredible

  2473. here in

  2474. this last

  2475. section

  2476. is that

  2477. the sacrifice

  2478. for Paul

  2479. isn't

  2480. dying

  2481. for Christ

  2482. the sacrifice

  2483. for Paul

  2484. is that he

  2485. continue living

  2486. that he

  2487. continue living

  2488. for the sake

  2489. of other

  2490. people

  2491. I mean

  2492. it's really

  2493. something else

  2494. and by the way

  2495. I'd say

  2496. if you die

  2497. for Christ

  2498. it's sacrificing

  2499. for him

  2500. but

  2501. Paul here

  2502. his perspective

  2503. and his

  2504. priorities

  2505. everything

  2506. is so

  2507. changed

  2508. that for

  2509. him

  2510. you know

  2511. to die

  2512. is real

  2513. that's the

  2514. real prize

  2515. and to live

  2516. out this

  2517. life

  2518. that's the

  2519. sacrifice

  2520. for Christ

  2521. I mean

  2522. just imagine

  2523. friends

  2524. growing in

  2525. that

  2526. mentality

  2527. okay

  2528. growing in

  2529. that

  2530. that day

  2531. in and day

  2532. out

  2533. our mentality

  2534. is

  2535. man if I

  2536. could only be

  2537. with Jesus

  2538. now

  2539. yeah okay

  2540. I'll live

  2541. this life

  2542. out

  2543. and I'll

  2544. live it

  2545. out

  2546. joyfully

  2547. and it's

  2548. for the

  2549. sake of

  2550. others

  2551. and for

  2552. the benefit

  2553. of my

  2554. family

  2555. and doing

  2556. good

  2557. wonderful

  2558. faithful

  2559. things

  2560. in the

  2561. in the

  2562. station

  2563. the Lord

  2564. has for

  2565. me

  2566. but the

  2567. real

  2568. like the

  2569. ache

  2570. the real

  2571. prize

  2572. it's coming

  2573. up

  2574. and just

  2575. imagine

  2576. how that

  2577. will

  2578. transform

  2579. our

  2580. life

  2581. about

  2582. how we

  2583. will

  2584. not be

  2585. so

  2586. constantly

  2587. frustrated

  2588. with people

  2589. not coming

  2590. through

  2591. or that

  2592. the thing

  2593. that is

  2594. new

  2595. that brings

  2596. us joy

  2597. it's

  2598. starting

  2599. to tarnish

  2600. that we

  2601. will have

  2602. a joy

  2603. that is

  2604. rooted

  2605. in an

  2606. unchangeable

  2607. God

  2608. and therefore

  2609. our joy

  2610. will be

  2611. unchanging

  2612. that is our

  2613. prayer

  2614. that is the

  2615. hope of

  2616. the gospel

  2617. that is

  2618. what Paul

  2619. is communicating

  2620. to us

  2621. this morning

  2622. in his

  2623. letter

  2624. and let

  2625. us ask

  2626. the Lord

  2627. for strength

  2628. to do

  2629. just that

  2630. let us

  2631. pray

  2632. Father

  2633. thank you

  2634. for your

  2635. servant

  2636. Paul

  2637. thank you

  2638. that his

  2639. perspective

  2640. and his

  2641. priorities

  2642. they

  2643. were upon

  2644. you

  2645. and that

  2646. his ultimate

  2647. prize

  2648. was not

  2649. continuing

  2650. to live

  2651. but

  2652. it was

  2653. to die

  2654. and go

  2655. to be

  2656. with you

  2657. Lord

  2658. what a

  2659. remarkable

  2660. man

  2661. but more

  2662. so

  2663. what a

  2664. remarkable

  2665. savior

  2666. how

  2667. Jesus

  2668. can

  2669. totally

  2670. transform

  2671. our

  2672. lives

  2673. Lord

  2674. we ask

  2675. that he

  2676. would do

  2677. that this

  2678. morning

  2679. by his

  2680. spirit

  2681. and that

  2682. we would

  2683. grow

  2684. in this

  2685. love of

  2686. you

  2687. and love

  2688. for your

  2689. son

  2690. and we

  2691. pray this

  2692. in Christ's

  2693. name

  2694. Amen

  2695. Amen
