  1. Let's ask the Lord's blessing as we open up his word.

  2. Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your word.

  3. ! Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gift of your word.

  4. We thank you that you have preserved this psalm, Psalm 132, through the ages.

  5. Lord, it is about the building and dedication and the purpose of your temple.

  6. And although your temple does not stand in Jerusalem any longer,

  7. it is still so very pertinent for us this morning.

  8. Help us to understand the reality of your temple,

  9. that you have always desired to dwell amongst your people.

  10. And Lord, we thank you that your son, Jesus Christ, has done just that.

  11. We ask your blessing on this morning.

  12. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  13. Amen.

  14. If you have a Bible, please turn with me to Psalm 132.

  15. We have a stack of Bibles at the back welcome table.

  16. Grab one at any time.

  17. You'd do me a great favor if you could follow along.

  18. This may be familiar to many of you, maybe all of you.

  19. I will insert my own name and actually the name of Christine as well into this.

  20. These were the vows we said, probably similar to the vows you said if you're married.

  21. And it went something like this for us.

  22. I, Daniel, take thee, Christine, to be my wedded wife,

  23. to have and to hold from this day forward,

  24. for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,

  25. in sickness and in health to love and to cherish,

  26. till death do us part according to God's holy ordinance,

  27. till death do us part according to God's holy ordinance,

  28. and there too I give thee my troth.

  29. I don't think we said that last part.

  30. Christine said something similar.

  31. She said, I, Christine, take Daniel,

  32. take thee, Daniel, to be my wedded husband,

  33. to have and to hold from this day forward,

  34. for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,

  35. in sickness and in health,

  36. to love and to cherish,

  37. till death do us part according to God's holy ordinance,

  38. and there too I give thee my troth.

  39. Sweet words.

  40. These are vows and promises that men make to women

  41. during the wedding ceremony.

  42. And it's, the language is taken from the Book of Common Prayer,

  43. and they will be familiar to you

  44. because most vows in the English language

  45. draw upon the words of the prayer book.

  46. I bring that up just to say that

  47. those vows are beautiful,

  48. but for those of you who are married,

  49. do you remember making those vows

  50. and thinking, what if I can't follow through?

  51. For me, it was, I think, the second day,

  52. not the day after we were married,

  53. but the day after that,

  54. I just thought, I mean, I felt the weight of it,

  55. of what I, the promises I made to Christine,

  56. and I was really scared.

  57. Not that I made the wrong decision, not a bit,

  58. but my goodness, what on earth was I promising?

  59. What on earth was I promising?

  60. I was making vows to her,

  61. to a church full of our friends and family,

  62. and to God himself.

  63. vows that, I mean, I hope,

  64. I would hope to keep in all circumstances,

  65. but there are so many factors

  66. outside of our control

  67. that to make a promise

  68. is a bit of a scary thing.

  69. There's so many things we cannot account for,

  70. so many contingencies that may come up

  71. that we can't necessarily figure out

  72. or get around.

  73. And this might seem like a really down thing to say,

  74. or maybe even an irrational thing,

  75. but for those who are married,

  76. in some ways, it's actually very rational,

  77. because it's rooted in reality.

  78. The factors that are completely outside of our control,

  79. promises turn out to be extremely hard to keep,

  80. even for the most noble and capable of us.

  81. One of the things in the marriage ceremony,

  82. just in case I'm coming across

  83. as if I am already planning on breaking my vows,

  84. not at all,

  85. that's why we ask the Lord for his help.

  86. We ask the Lord's blessing in a marriage ceremony.

  87. Nevertheless, promises in general.

  88. You know,

  89. I don't know if it's just because I'm getting older,

  90. but when people promise me things,

  91. I'm just immediately suspicious

  92. that they can't keep the promises.

  93. And it's not because I have a whole

  94. kind of history of broken promises,

  95. but because life is tough,

  96. and promises are easy to make,

  97. but are extremely hard to keep.

  98. Trusting in the promises of God

  99. found in Holy Scripture

  100. also are,

  101. it's not necessarily an easy thing to do.

  102. I mean, at first it seems like a wonderful thing,

  103. a sure thing.

  104. The promise of salvation,

  105. peace in the storm,

  106. joy that transcends circumstance,

  107. eternal life, and so on.

  108. But then an unforeseen illness happens.

  109. Somebody betrays our trust.

  110. We fail to meet expectations.

  111. We fail to meet expectations.

  112. Maybe we've just come in second place

  113. a few too many times.

  114. All right?

  115. All these different circumstances

  116. that come our way

  117. that are not ideal,

  118. and suddenly the promises of God

  119. begin to show cracks.

  120. We might think God is unjust.

  121. We might think he is aloof.

  122. Or that maybe

  123. we have run out of grace.

  124. The promises of God

  125. are then treated like

  126. the promises of Daniel,

  127. the promises of you,

  128. or you,

  129. the promises of people

  130. that don't keep promises.

  131. We view the promises of God

  132. as riddled with cracks

  133. and rendered seemingly untrustworthy.

  134. So having faith in the promises of God

  135. has,

  136. it requires belief.

  137. It requires faith.

  138. And the difficulty with that

  139. is that keeping faith

  140. can be very difficult.

  141. So as that is a bit of an introduction,

  142. we continue on in our series

  143. on the Psalms of Ascent.

  144. And we get to Psalm 132.

  145. Now the Psalms of Ascent

  146. go to 134,

  147. but really Psalm 132

  148. is kind of the pinnacle

  149. of the Psalms of Ascent.

  150. They express,

  151. all of them,

  152. and especially this one,

  153. expresses a deep longing

  154. for the promise-making,

  155. promise-keeping God

  156. to remain faithful

  157. to his promises,

  158. and especially the promise

  159. of his presence,

  160. that he will be with us

  161. and that we will be with him.

  162. The question is whether

  163. God has kept his promises

  164. in the past.

  165. Has he proven true in the past?

  166. And the answer to that question

  167. will help us to decide

  168. if we can trust God

  169. to keep his promises today

  170. and for the future.

  171. So a lot rides on it,

  172. on if God is a promise-keeping God.

  173. So our Psalm 132 envisions

  174. God blessing the temple

  175. with his presence.

  176. So we will examine

  177. the three main players

  178. and their actions.

  179. Verses 1 to 7,

  180. we're going to look at

  181. David's efforts.

  182. Verses 8 to 10,

  183. we're going to look at

  184. Solomon's prayer.

  185. And then finally,

  186. 11 to 18,

  187. we'll look at

  188. the Lord's promise.

  189. So David's efforts,

  190. Solomon's prayer,

  191. the Lord's promise.

  192. Turn with me

  193. to verse 1.

  194. We'll read verses 1 to 5.

  195. A song of ascents.

  196. Remember, O Lord,

  197. in David's favor

  198. all the hardships he endured,

  199. how he swore to the Lord

  200. and vowed to the mighty one

  201. of Jacob.

  202. I will not enter my house

  203. or get into my bed.

  204. I will not give sleep

  205. to my eyes

  206. or slumber to my eyelids

  207. until I find a place

  208. for the Lord,

  209. a dwelling place

  210. for the mighty one

  211. of Jacob.

  212. David's devotion

  213. to the Lord

  214. was the defining trait

  215. that really distinguished

  216. him from his days

  217. as a lowly shepherd

  218. tending his father

  219. Jesse's flock.

  220. He was a man

  221. after God's own heart.

  222. His desire was

  223. to fulfill the Lord's will

  224. and to bring him honor

  225. and glory.

  226. And this is what

  227. is described

  228. in these opening

  229. five verses.

  230. David,

  231. for all of

  232. his mistakes,

  233. all of his sins,

  234. all of his warring,

  235. he,

  236. with patience

  237. and sacrifice,

  238. made preparations

  239. to build a temple

  240. for the Lord.

  241. We can read about this

  242. in 1 Chronicles

    1 Chronicles 22 chapter mention

  243. chapter 22,

  244. the amount of preparation

  245. he made.

  246. David desired

  247. to honor the Lord,

  248. both he

  249. and the nation

  250. of Israel

  251. that he led.

  252. The temple

  253. was to be

  254. the house

  255. of the Lord

  256. and specifically

  257. it was to be

  258. the place

  259. where the Ark

  260. of the Covenant

  261. would be kept.

  262. If you're new

  263. to the faith

  264. or if you need

  265. a bit of a refresher,

  266. the Ark

  267. of the Covenant

  268. was a chest-like

  269. object that the Israelites

  270. carried through the desert

  271. after the Lord

  272. delivered them

  273. from Egyptian slavery.

  274. It held within it

  275. the two tablets

  276. with the Ten Commandments

  277. on it

  278. that Moses brought down

  279. from the Mount of Sinai.

  280. It also had

  281. Aaron's staff

  282. which had budded,

  283. Aaron being

  284. the brother

  285. of Moses

  286. and the priest

  287. of the Lord.

  288. But more importantly

  289. and for us specifically

  290. this morning

  291. it symbolized,

  292. the Ark symbolized

  293. the very presence

  294. of the Lord

  295. amongst his people.

  296. What happened

  297. was that

  298. the Ark

  299. was neglected

  300. and forgotten.

  301. During King Saul's rule,

  302. so King Saul

  303. was the first king

  304. of Israel

  305. after the people

  306. rejected God

  307. as their king.

  308. They wanted a king

  309. like the other nations

  310. so the prophet Samuel

  311. with God's instruction

  312. anointed King Saul

  313. but King Saul

  314. he failed

  315. in his duty

  316. as the king

  317. and the Ark

  318. was neglected.

  319. For some 20 years

  320. it was forgotten about.

  321. We read about this

  322. actually in verse 6.

  323. It says this,

  324. Behold,

  325. we heard of it

  326. in Ephrathah,

  327. that is Bethlehem.

  328. We found it

  329. in the fields

  330. of Jear.

  331. But those places

  332. as good as they may be,

  333. Bethlehem being

  334. the city of David,

  335. they weren't Zion,

  336. they weren't Jerusalem,

  337. they weren't the city,

  338. the holy city of God.

  339. God chose Zion

  340. as his home,

  341. as the place

  342. where he would rest.

  343. Not Bethlehem

  344. or the fields of Jear.

  345. The Lord was to have prominence,

  346. not to be forgotten

  347. in obscurity.

  348. That is why David

  349. was so zealous

  350. to bring the Ark

  351. of the Covenant

  352. to Jerusalem

  353. and he noticed

  354. that the Ark

  355. was in a tent

  356. while he lived

  357. in a home

  358. and for David

  359. this wasn't okay.

  360. So he desired

  361. to build a temple

  362. for the Lord

  363. so that the Lord

  364. would be honored

  365. above all people,

  366. that the people

  367. would worship him properly

  368. and David wants

  369. to do right by the Lord

  370. and he did indeed

  371. do right

  372. for he leads the people

  373. into God's presence.

  374. He's a good

  375. and faithful king

  376. and that's reflected

  377. actually in verse 7.

  378. If you read with me

  379. verse 7,

  380. let us go to the,

  381. this is the people

  382. speaking here,

  383. let us go

  384. to his dwelling place.

  385. Let us worship

  386. at his footstool.

  387. You see how

  388. this divine

  389. selfless leadership

  390. aiming to honor

  391. and glorify the Lord

  392. on his terms,

  393. what it does

  394. is it mediates

  395. God's presence

  396. to his people.

  397. What David

  398. isn't doing

  399. is treating God

  400. as a talisman.

  401. He's not treating

  402. God like

  403. the Pharisees

  404. and the Sadducees

  405. and the money lenders

  406. that we read about

  407. in Luke 19

  408. in the gospel reading.

  409. God is not

  410. a means

  411. to our own glory

  412. but rather

  413. David is glorifying

  414. the Lord

  415. at the cost

  416. of himself.

  417. I mean,

  418. we see this

  419. in verse 1

  420. David enduring

  421. hardships

  422. and sacrifices

  423. so that

  424. he could make

  425. provisions

  426. for the temple

  427. to be built

  428. and what's the result?

  429. The people

  430. worship the Lord

  431. with righteousness

  432. and joy

  433. and gladness

  434. that his obedience

  435. is a blessing

  436. to more than just him

  437. but it extends

  438. out to the nation.

  439. This is what

  440. godly leadership

  441. looks like.

  442. David has acted

  443. in faith

  444. that God's promise

  445. to dwell amongst

  446. his people

  447. still holds true

  448. and what he does

  449. is he acts

  450. upon the promise.

  451. God's people respond

  452. and God blesses them

  453. with his presence.

  454. It's actually

  455. a very beautiful

  456. opening few verses.

  457. However,

  458. it is not David

  459. who builds the temple.

  460. If you know

  461. any of the story,

  462. David,

  463. I mean,

  464. he is doing something

  465. that is,

  466. that God

  467. is quite pleased with

  468. but because David

  469. has warred

  470. so much,

  471. he has too much

  472. blood on his hands

  473. it says in

  474. 1 Chronicles 22

  475. that God

  476. would not allow him

  477. to build the temple.

  478. Even though David

  479. swore that he

  480. would build the temple,

  481. he swore to God

  482. and again,

  483. we start to see

  484. a human promise

  485. not be fulfilled.

  486. It would be his son

  487. that would build

  488. the temple.

  489. So does this mean

  490. that the promise

  491. of God's presence

  492. would be negated?

  493. I mean,

  494. David was the one

  495. who was supposed

  496. to make it happen

  497. and it didn't happen.

  498. So,

  499. is God's will

  500. contingent on

  501. man's promises?

  502. Put differently

  503. for us to consider,

  504. are God's promises

  505. of love and faithfulness

  506. dependent on

  507. our promises

  508. of the same to him?

  509. David's efforts

  510. come up short.

  511. Let's look at

  512. Solomon's prayer,

  513. verses 8 to 10.

  514. Arise, O Lord,

  515. and go to your

  516. resting place,

  517. you and the ark

  518. of your might.

  519. Let your priests

  520. be clothed

  521. with righteousness

  522. and let your saints

  523. shout for joy.

  524. For the sake

  525. of your servant David,

  526. do not turn away

  527. the face of your

  528. anointed one.

  529. Although David

  530. did not have

  531. the privilege

  532. of building

  533. the temple,

  534. his son Solomon

  535. was the one

  536. to carry out

  537. the work

  538. until the temple

  539. was completed.

  540. Verses 8 to 10

  541. is a near verbatim

  542. quote

  543. from King Solomon

  544. at the temple

  545. dedication

  546. once it's completed

  547. in 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 6 chapter mention

  548. chapter 6.

  549. Solomon dedicates

  550. the completed temple

  551. to the Lord

  552. and the ark

  553. of the covenant

  554. was brought

  555. into the temple

  556. itself.

  557. It's the completion

  558. of David's vision,

  559. the Lord's will

  560. for the ark,

  561. for the people

  562. of Israel.

  563. The temple

  564. properly built

  565. for the rightful

  566. worship of God

  567. was a blessing

  568. for the people

  569. and therefore

  570. the next chapter

  571. in 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 7 chapter mention

  572. chapter 7,

  573. God comes down

  574. with a show

  575. of his presence

  576. that would be

  577. unmistakable.

  578. He is pleased.

  579. God is dwelling

  580. amongst his people

  581. once again.

  582. It would make sense

  583. then that this

  584. is the pinnacle

  585. of the Psalms of Ascent.

  586. Again,

  587. the Psalms of Ascent

  588. were and are

  589. these collection

  590. of psalms

  591. that the Israelites

  592. as they went

  593. on their pilgrim

  594. pilgrimages

  595. to Jerusalem

  596. three times a year

  597. they would sing

  598. as they ascended

  599. the roads

  600. up to Jerusalem.

  601. The high point

  602. would be

  603. worshipping in the temple

  604. and this is

  605. what it envisions

  606. that God

  607. dwelling amongst

  608. his people

  609. and they

  610. worshipping him

  611. in righteousness

  612. and with joy.

  613. It seems that

  614. David's efforts

  615. to keep the covenant

  616. even though he

  617. did not

  618. keep his promise

  619. would be enough

  620. for the Lord

  621. to show favor

  622. to the Davidic line

  623. especially his

  624. anointed son Solomon.

  625. I mean we see

  626. this in verse 10

  627. for the sake

  628. of your servant

  629. David

  630. this is Solomon

  631. really praying

  632. to the Lord

  633. for himself

  634. and his offspring

  635. for the sake

  636. of your servant

  637. David

  638. do not turn away

  639. the face

  640. of your anointed

  641. one.

  642. So David

  643. far from being

  644. perfect

  645. having a heart

  646. that was soft

  647. towards the Lord

  648. the Lord

  649. is honoring

  650. Solomon

  651. as a result.

  652. David did not

  653. get to enjoy

  654. the fruit

  655. of his labor

  656. with the building

  657. of the temple

  658. the sacrifice

  659. and the effort

  660. and the hardships

  661. that he made

  662. for the Lord

  663. it turns out

  664. that they were

  665. not in vain

  666. after all.

  667. David had gathered

  668. money and resources

  669. and spent a great

  670. deal of time

  671. preparing for

  672. a temple

  673. that he would

  674. not build

  675. and this is

  676. like a bit

  677. of an aside

  678. point

  679. it doesn't

  680. really

  681. connect

  682. much

  683. with the

  684. text

  685. but I'll

  686. just say

  687. this

  688. this is

  689. something

  690. we can

  691. take heart

  692. in

  693. that the

  694. sacrifices

  695. and the

  696. efforts

  697. that we

  698. make

  699. for the

  700. Lord

  701. are always

  702. worth it

  703. even though

  704. we don't

  705. see the

  706. fruit

  707. immediately.

  708. There have

  709. been people

  710. in the

  711. history

  712. of the

  713. church

  714. that began

  715. making

  716. cathedrals

  717. and churches

  718. that would

  719. take

  720. decades

  721. maybe even

  722. centuries

  723. to build.

  724. They would

  725. start it

  726. knowing

  727. that they

  728. would never

  729. complete it.

  730. we're not

  731. building that

  732. I mean

  733. it would

  734. be great

  735. if we

  736. did

  737. but

  738. nevertheless

  739. we

  740. are called

  741. to obey

  742. the Lord

  743. in all

  744. sorts of

  745. different

  746. arenas and

  747. areas in

  748. our lives

  749. and often

  750. times

  751. we do not

  752. see the

  753. fruit

  754. of our

  755. obedience.

  756. We don't

  757. see the

  758. fruit of

  759. our prayers.

  760. We don't

  761. feel that

  762. we are being

  763. honored by

  764. God or

  765. get the

  766. benefits of

  767. keeping

  768. pure

  769. or

  770. spending

  771. our

  772. time

  773. and our

  774. money

  775. on things

  776. that benefit

  777. the Lord

  778. and bring

  779. glory to

  780. his name

  781. not increase

  782. our comfort.

  783. We don't

  784. get to taste

  785. the fruits

  786. but we can

  787. be sure

  788. that God

  789. sees it

  790. and he

  791. honors it

  792. and it

  793. brings him

  794. gladness.

  795. So it's a bit

  796. of an aside

  797. but I'll say

  798. do not grow

  799. weary of

  800. obeying the

  801. Lord even

  802. if you

  803. don't see

  804. the fruit

  805. of it

  806. because he

  807. does.

  808. He sees

  809. what you

  810. are doing

  811. and it

  812. pleases him.

  813. Let's get

  814. back to

  815. the text.

  816. David lays

  817. the groundwork

  818. and Solomon

  819. builds the

  820. temple.

  821. The prayer

  822. that Solomon

  823. is praying

  824. here is

  825. offered and

  826. immediately

  827. afterwards like

  828. I mentioned

  829. in chapter

  830. 7 of

  831. 2nd Chronicles

  832. chapter 7

  833. the presence

  834. of God

  835. fills the

  836. temple.

  837. the Lord's

  838. promises

  839. remain firm.

  840. The Lord

  841. is among

  842. his people.

  843. He has

  844. not turned

  845. his face

  846. away from

  847. his anointed.

  848. But such

  849. a reality

  850. was short

  851. lived.

  852. By the

  853. end of

  854. Solomon's

  855. reign this

  856. righteous

  857. wise

  858. king of

  859. Israel

  860. he was

  861. overtaken

  862. by infidelity

  863. and passion.

  864. He erected

  865. shrines to

  866. false gods

  867. and he

  868. polluted

  869. the very

  870. city

  871. the very

  872. city that

  873. the Lord

  874. loved.

  875. And by

  876. the time

  877. Solomon died

  878. and his

  879. son Rehoboam

  880. became king

  881. the kingdom

  882. was divided.

  883. The northern

  884. ten tribes

  885. eventually falling

  886. to the Assyrians

  887. in the 8th

  888. century BC

  889. and the southern

  890. two tribes

  891. falling in the

  892. 6th century.

  893. Israel was

  894. shattered.

  895. The tribes

  896. scattered.

  897. It seems like

  898. the promise of

  899. God

  900. were nullified.

  901. It appears

  902. that the

  903. Lord turned

  904. his face

  905. away from

  906. David's

  907. line.

  908. David's

  909. anointed

  910. line.

  911. And especially

  912. if we consider

  913. verse 12

  914. and I know

  915. we're skipping

  916. and we'll

  917. touch on it

  918. in the next

  919. point.

  920. But this is

  921. what verse 12

  922. says.

  923. If your sons

  924. keep my

  925. commandment

  926. this is the

  927. Lord speaking

  928. if your sons

  929. keep my

  930. covenant

  931. and my

  932. testimonies

  933. that I

  934. shall teach

  935. them their

  936. sons also

  937. forever

  938. shall sit

  939. on your

  940. throne.

  941. The

  942. Davidic

  943. line

  944. failed to

  945. uphold the

  946. covenant

  947. so the

  948. Lord

  949. withdrew

  950. his

  951. favor

  952. from

  953. not

  954. just

  955. the

  956. Davidic

  957. line

  958. but the

  959. entire

  960. nation.

  961. And what

  962. did it

  963. lead to?

  964. It did

  965. not lead

  966. to a

  967. greater

  968. life but

  969. rather

  970. calamity

  971. and exile.

  972. And like

  973. David's

  974. promise

  975. Solomon's

  976. prayer and

  977. posture had

  978. weak

  979. foundations

  980. and it

  981. ultimately

  982. failed.

  983. I mean

  984. what he

  985. prayed was

  986. excellent

  987. but his

  988. posture

  989. was weak

  990. surely

  991. God's

  992. promise

  993. of

  994. eternal

  995. dwelling

  996. with his

  997. people

  998. it must

  999. be rendered

  1000. void

  1001. at least

  1002. according to

  1003. verse 12

  1004. we've had

  1005. David's

  1006. efforts

  1007. excellent

  1008. in many

  1009. ways

  1010. but failing

  1011. Solomon's

  1012. prayer of

  1013. dedication

  1014. and posture

  1015. excellent

  1016. in many

  1017. ways

  1018. but failing

  1019. how about

  1020. the Lord's

  1021. promise

  1022. we've read

  1023. verse 12

  1024. the conditional

  1025. promise of

  1026. God's

  1027. favor upon

  1028. David's

  1029. line

  1030. if covenant

  1031. faithful

  1032. covenant

  1033. faithlessness

  1034. continues

  1035. but what

  1036. about

  1037. verse 11

  1038. I'll read

  1039. verse 11

  1040. and 12

  1041. the Lord

  1042. swore to

  1043. David

  1044. a sure

  1045. oath

  1046. from which

  1047. he will

  1048. not

  1049. turn back

  1050. one

  1051. of the

  1052. sons

  1053. of your

  1054. body

  1055. I will

  1056. set

  1057. on your

  1058. throne

  1059. and then

  1060. verse 12

  1061. here's the

  1062. conditional

  1063. the condition

  1064. that God

  1065. puts on the

  1066. Davidic line

  1067. if your

  1068. sons keep

  1069. my covenant

  1070. and my

  1071. testimonies

  1072. that I

  1073. shall teach

  1074. them

  1075. their sons

  1076. also

  1077. forever

  1078. shall sit

  1079. on your

  1080. throne

  1081. God is

  1082. unchanging

  1083. in theological

  1084. terms we

  1085. call this

  1086. the mutability

  1087. of God

  1088. God is

  1089. unchanging

  1090. very important

  1091. doctrine of

  1092. God

  1093. to remember

  1094. what does it

  1095. mean it

  1096. means that

  1097. he is

  1098. what he

  1099. is which

  1100. is what

  1101. he has

  1102. always been

  1103. and what

  1104. he will

  1105. always be

  1106. he has

  1107. always existed

  1108. he has

  1109. never changed

  1110. he is perfect

  1111. in every

  1112. aspect

  1113. and it

  1114. means that

  1115. the promises

  1116. he makes

  1117. are not

  1118. contingent

  1119. on factors

  1120. outside of

  1121. his control

  1122. why

  1123. because

  1124. nothing

  1125. is outside

  1126. of his

  1127. control

  1128. if he

  1129. promises

  1130. something

  1131. it will

  1132. come to

  1133. pass

  1134. he is

  1135. also

  1136. all

  1137. knowing

  1138. we

  1139. call this

  1140. God's

  1141. omniscience

  1142. nothing

  1143. surprises

  1144. him or

  1145. escapes

  1146. his

  1147. notice

  1148. nothing

  1149. we can

  1150. do

  1151. feel

  1152. or

  1153. think

  1154. will

  1155. elude

  1156. him

  1157. he

  1158. knows

  1159. all

  1160. all

  1161. what

  1162. you

  1163. are

  1164. thinking

  1165. right

  1166. now

  1167. he

  1168. knows

  1169. he

  1170. knows

  1171. it

  1172. crystal

  1173. clear

  1174. so we

  1175. see a bit

  1176. of a

  1177. tension

  1178. here

  1179. okay

  1180. because

  1181. on one

  1182. hand

  1183. we have

  1184. this

  1185. unchanging

  1186. God

  1187. who knows

  1188. everything

  1189. which means

  1190. that his

  1191. promises

  1192. are always

  1193. true

  1194. and sure

  1195. and that

  1196. there are

  1197. no factors

  1198. that he

  1199. has

  1200. failed to

  1201. consider

  1202. and yet

  1203. at the

  1204. same

  1205. time

  1206. it

  1207. would

  1208. seem

  1209. that

  1210. God's

  1211. covenant

  1212. promises

  1213. are

  1214. contingent

  1215. upon

  1216. David's

  1217. faithfulness

  1218. both

  1219. of these

  1220. things

  1221. can't

  1222. really

  1223. be

  1224. true

  1225. there's

  1226. a

  1227. tension

  1228. here

  1229. verse

  1230. 11

  1231. states

  1232. the

  1233. Lord

  1234. which

  1235. is

  1236. in the

  1237. original

  1238. language

  1239. is his

  1240. covenant

  1241. name

  1242. there's

  1243. such

  1244. an

  1245. emphasis

  1246. on

  1247. God's

  1248. nature

  1249. of

  1250. covenant

  1251. making

  1252. covenant

  1253. keeping

  1254. God

  1255. the

  1256. Lord

  1257. swore

  1258. to

  1259. David

  1260. a

  1261. true

  1262. truth

  1263. it's

  1264. as if

  1265. he is

  1266. super

  1267. charging

  1268. his

  1269. oath

  1270. not that

  1271. he needs

  1272. to

  1273. but this

  1274. is what

  1275. he is

  1276. doing

  1277. he is

  1278. swearing

  1279. a

  1280. true

  1281. truth

  1282. and yet

  1283. David's

  1284. line has

  1285. utterly

  1286. and

  1287. spectacularly

  1288. failed

  1289. presents

  1290. us with a

  1291. very troubling

  1292. challenge to

  1293. our

  1294. faith

  1295. in God

  1296. it suggests

  1297. that God

  1298. has either

  1299. lied to

  1300. us

  1301. and is

  1302. untrustworthy

  1303. or he is

  1304. not powerful

  1305. enough

  1306. to keep

  1307. his

  1308. promises

  1309. as if

  1310. he could

  1311. not

  1312. anticipate

  1313. the

  1314. consequences

  1315. arising

  1316. from

  1317. fallible

  1318. humans

  1319. who are

  1320. just

  1321. unable

  1322. to

  1323. obey

  1324. his

  1325. commands

  1326. due

  1327. to

  1328. our

  1329. propensity

  1330. to

  1331. sin

  1332. it's

  1333. a bit

  1334. of a

  1335. conundrum

  1336. and if

  1337. that is

  1338. the case

  1339. isn't it

  1340. just wiser

  1341. to simply

  1342. live

  1343. eat

  1344. and drink

  1345. for tomorrow

  1346. we die

  1347. if God

  1348. can't come

  1349. through on

  1350. his promises

  1351. then let us

  1352. just live

  1353. it up

  1354. or maybe

  1355. we should

  1356. just seek

  1357. out a

  1358. greater

  1359. God

  1360. who can

  1361. offer a

  1362. better

  1363. promise

  1364. or actually

  1365. uphold the

  1366. promises

  1367. that he

  1368. makes

  1369. see

  1370. there's a

  1371. tension here

  1372. in verse 11

  1373. and 12

  1374. and we have

  1375. to resolve it

  1376. or else

  1377. our faith

  1378. really is starting

  1379. to crumble

  1380. or at least

  1381. the object of

  1382. our faith

  1383. is starting

  1384. to crumble

  1385. the stakes

  1386. are high

  1387. much depends

  1388. on whether

  1389. God will

  1390. keep his

  1391. promises

  1392. is God

  1393. God

  1394. or is he

  1395. like us

  1396. any person

  1397. can make a

  1398. promise

  1399. or a covenant

  1400. even God

  1401. but can he

  1402. keep it

  1403. I think we'll

  1404. find the answer

  1405. in verses 13

  1406. and following

  1407. let's read

  1408. starting verse 13

  1409. all the way

  1410. down to 18

  1411. for the Lord

  1412. has chosen

  1413. Zion

  1414. he has

  1415. desired it

  1416. for his

  1417. dwelling place

  1418. this is my

  1419. resting place

  1420. forever

  1421. here I will

  1422. dwell for I

  1423. have desired it

  1424. I will abundantly

  1425. bless her

  1426. provisions

  1427. I will satisfy

  1428. her poor

  1429. with bread

  1430. her priests

  1431. I will clothe

  1432. with salvation

  1433. and her saints

  1434. will shout for joy

  1435. there I will

  1436. make a horn

  1437. to sprout

  1438. for David

  1439. I have prepared

  1440. a lamp

  1441. for my

  1442. anointed

  1443. his enemies

  1444. I will clothe

  1445. with shame

  1446. but on him

  1447. his crown

  1448. will shine

  1449. if there's

  1450. any question

  1451. about whether

  1452. God will keep

  1453. his promises

  1454. even though

  1455. David and his

  1456. offspring are

  1457. constantly breaking

  1458. the promises

  1459. so much so

  1460. that they are

  1461. they are exiled

  1462. they are exiled

  1463. and even in our

  1464. gospel text that we

  1465. read

  1466. Jesus makes it

  1467. very clear that

  1468. Jerusalem will be

  1469. raised to the

  1470. ground

  1471. why?

  1472. because the

  1473. people of God

  1474. did not recognize

  1475. their hour

  1476. of visitation

  1477. okay?

  1478. so God's

  1479. people constantly

  1480. failing

  1481. and yet

  1482. verse 13

  1483. and following

  1484. it's a resounding

  1485. declaration

  1486. that God says

  1487. my promises

  1488. are bigger

  1489. than your failure

  1490. they're bigger

  1491. they're so

  1492. so much bigger

  1493. as

  1494. your capacity

  1495. to mess things

  1496. up is huge

  1497. okay?

  1498. my capacity

  1499. to fulfill

  1500. my promises

  1501. is infinite

  1502. this is what

  1503. it's saying

  1504. in verses

  1505. 13

  1506. and 18

  1507. do you notice

  1508. how as we

  1509. move into

  1510. this final

  1511. section

  1512. God's words

  1513. are expanded

  1514. far beyond

  1515. David's immediate

  1516. line

  1517. and the blessing

  1518. is far greater

  1519. than David

  1520. could imagine

  1521. and this whole

  1522. section is riddled

  1523. with God saying

  1524. I will

  1525. not hey

  1526. let's do this

  1527. together

  1528. he's saying

  1529. I will

  1530. he's not saying

  1531. I'm going to do

  1532. 90% of it

  1533. you're going to do

  1534. some heavy lifting

1535. but I'm going to do

  1536. the majority of it

  1537. it's just

  1538. I will

  1539. I will

  1540. I will

  1541. I will

  1542. and it's blessing

  1543. upon blessing

  1544. he's the one

  1545. who will bring

  1546. righteousness

  1547. to the nation

  1548. he's the one

  1549. who will

  1550. feed the poor

  1551. which is to say

  1552. that even the least

  1553. among us

  1554. will have everything

  1555. they need

  1556. for life and holiness

  1557. bread is so much

  1558. more than just

  1559. bread in the Bible

  1560. those that trust

  1561. in false gods

  1562. will be clothed

  1563. with shame

  1564. but on him

  1565. his crown

  1566. will shine

  1567. how will God

  1568. fulfill this promise

  1569. well he has

  1570. in part

  1571. and in a

  1572. huge kind of way

  1573. Jesus fulfills

  1574. everything this

  1575. psalm promises

  1576. he is ultimately

  1577. the Davidic king

  1578. he is the

  1579. the

  1580. the true

  1581. and

  1582. and greatest

  1583. child of David

  1584. who guides his people

  1585. in righteousness

  1586. and proper worship

  1587. like the ark

  1588. Jesus

  1589. he embodies

  1590. the very presence

  1591. of God

  1592. dwelling among us

  1593. if you remember

  1594. in John chapter 1

    John 1:14

  1595. verse 14

  1596. it says that

  1597. that the word

  1598. tabernacled

  1599. or dwelt

  1600. or visited

  1601. I think

  1602. Eugene Pearson

  1603. in the message

  1604. calls it

  1605. moved into the neighborhood

  1606. it's that God

  1607. literally

  1608. the word

  1609. made flesh

  1610. dwelt amongst us

  1611. if the ark

  1612. embodies God's

  1613. presence

  1614. then Jesus

  1615. has come

  1616. in flesh

  1617. something far

  1618. greater than

  1619. the ark

  1620. he is the

  1621. great high priest

  1622. robed in

  1623. righteousness

  1624. leading us

  1625. in praising

  1626. the father

  1627. with shouts

  1628. of joy

  1629. he is the

  1630. perfect sacrifice

  1631. the blemish free

  1632. lamb

  1633. sacrifice

  1634. for all of us

  1635. once and for all

  1636. an offering

  1637. given

  1638. to us

  1639. because of

  1640. love and grace

  1641. and then

  1642. here's the

  1643. beautiful thing

  1644. here

  1645. because

  1646. again

  1647. David's

  1648. line

  1649. is all

  1650. but

  1651. destroyed

  1652. okay

  1653. it's

  1654. all

  1655. but

  1656. destroyed

  1657. it's

  1658. like

  1659. David's

  1660. line

  1661. is this

  1662. beautiful

  1663. gorgeous

  1664. tree

  1665. that has

  1666. been toppled

  1667. over by a

  1668. windstorm

  1669. or cut

  1670. down

  1671. because it's

  1672. disease

  1673. and you

  1674. see

  1675. this

  1676. giant

  1677. ugly

  1678. stump

  1679. that used

  1680. to be

  1681. this

  1682. beautiful

  1683. grand

  1684. tree

  1685. and it

  1686. says

  1687. here

  1688. in verse

  1689. 17

  1690. there I

  1691. will make

  1692. a horn

  1693. to sprout

  1694. for David

  1695. it's

  1696. as if

  1697. God

  1698. is making

  1699. a new

  1700. tree

  1701. sprout

  1702. up

  1703. from

  1704. this

  1705. stump

  1706. and it

  1707. is a

  1708. horn

  1709. which is

  1710. this

  1711. picture

  1712. in the

  1713. Bible

  1714. of

  1715. victory

  1716. and

  1717. strength

  1718. and this

  1719. is who

  1720. Jesus

  1721. is

  1722. and he

  1723. fulfills

  1724. it

  1725. and he

  1726. does

  1727. this

  1728. by perfectly

  1729. obeying

  1730. and glorifying

  1731. God

  1732. not by

  1733. charging

  1734. in

  1735. with a

  1736. sword

  1737. drawn

  1738. by being

  1739. hung

  1740. upon

  1741. the

  1742. cross

  1743. defeating

  1744. death

  1745. by

  1746. death

  1747. upon

  1748. him

  1749. was

  1750. laid

  1751. all

  1752. of

  1753. our

  1754. iniquities

  1755. and he

  1756. rises

  1757. again

  1758. to

  1759. new

  1760. life

  1761. so that

  1762. all

  1763. who put

  1764. our

  1765. faith

  1766. and

  1767. trust

  1768. in

  1769. him

  1770. we

  1771. get

  1772. to

  1773. be

  1774. with

  1775. him

  1776. forever

  1777. I

  1778. mean

  1779. that

  1780. is

  1781. this

  1782. is

  1783. the

  1784. thing

  1785. it's

  1786. not

  1787. about

  1788. just

  1789. going

  1790. to

  1791. heaven

  1792. or

  1793. avoiding

  1794. hell

  1795. it's

  1796. about

  1797. being

  1798. in

  1799. God's

  1800. presence

  1801. forever

  1802. it's

  1803. all

  1804. throughout

  1805. scriptures

  1806. it's

  1807. in

  1808. psalm

  1809. 132

  1810. and it

  1811. is

  1812. the

  1813. hope

  1814. of

  1815. all

  1816. those

  1817. who

  1818. call

  1819. upon

  1820. the

  1821. name

  1822. of

  1823. the

  1824. Lord

  1825. after

  1826. centuries

  1827. of

  1828. exile

  1829. longing

  1830. wandering

  1831. and fear

  1832. that God

  1833. would not

  1834. keep

  1835. his

  1836. covenant

  1837. the

  1838. Lord

  1839. fulfilled

  1840. his

  1841. promise

  1842. centuries

  1843. later

  1844. but he

  1845. still

  1846. fulfilled

  1847. it

  1848. and in

  1849. a

  1850. greater

  1851. way

  1852. than

  1853. David

  1854. or

  1855. Solomon

  1856. or

  1857. Israel

  1858. or

  1859. even

  1860. us

  1861. could

  1862. have

  1863. ever

  1864. hoped

  1865. how

  1866. can

  1867. we

  1868. be

  1869. sure

  1870. that

  1871. God's

  1872. promises

  1873. will

  1874. come

  1875. to

  1876. pass

  1877. even

  1878. though

  1879. we

  1880. do

  1881. not

  1882. see

  1883. them

  1884. is

  1885. because

  1886. what

  1887. he

  1888. promised

  1889. to

  1890. Solomon

  1891. it

  1892. came

  1893. true

  1894. in

  1895. Jesus

  1896. which

  1897. means

  1898. the

  1899. promise

  1900. that

  1901. he

  1902. will

  1903. come

  1904. again

  1905. to

  1906. wipe

  1907. away

  1908. every

  1909. tear

  1910. to

  1911. do

  1912. away

  1913. with

  1914. all

  1915. disease

  1916. to

  1917. do

  1918. away

  1919. with

  1920. all

  1921. evil

  1922. that

  1923. will

  1924. come

  1925. to

  1926. pass

  1927. as

  1928. well

  1929. he

  1930. has

  1931. never

  1932. not

  1933. kept

  1934. !

  1935. a

  1936. promise

  1937. !

  1938. friends

  1939. trust

  1940. in

  1941. the

  1942. Lord

  1943. rely

  1944. on

  1945. God's

  1946. power

  1947. to

  1948. uphold

  1949. his

  1950. promise

  1951. more

  1952. than

  1953. your

  1954. ability

  1955. to

  1956. keep

  1957. yours

  1958. don't

  1959. promise

  1960. the

  1961. Lord

  1962. that

  1963. you

  1964. will

  1965. do

  1966. good

  1967. so

  1968. that

  1969. he

  1970. will

  1971. bring

  1972. you

  1973. into

  1974. his

  1975. presence

  1976. cast

  1977. all

  1978. of

  1979. your

  1980. faith

  1981. upon

  1982. his

  1983. promise

  1984. that

  1985. says

  1986. that

  1987. he

  1988. has

  1989. made

  1990. a

  1991. way

  1992. through

  1993. Christ

  1994. to

  1995. bring

  1996. you

  1997. into

  1998. his

  1999. he

  2000. has

  2001. established

  2002. his

  2003. dwelling

  2004. place

  2005. amongst

  2006. us

  2007. praise

  2008. be

  2009. to

  2010. God

  2011. amen
