  1. Before we open God's word, let us take a moment and pray.

  2. Jesus, you have said that the truth will set us free.

  3. !

  4. Because we'll feel more liked, we'll feel more control, we'll feel more whole.

  5. But the truth is, to live in the truth is the only true way to live.

  6. Lord, we want to live according to your word.

  7. We want to have those lies that we believe, those untruths that we cling to.

  8. We want to see them banished.

  9. So Lord, help us.

  10. As we open your word, help us to see truth, see reality for the way it truly is, the way you have designed it to be.

  11. Lord, not to dismay us, but to draw us ever closer, ever closer to yourself.

  12. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  13. I'll start off with a quote.

  14. This is from an article called The Twelve Months of the French Republic Calendar, and it's from the Encyclopedia Britannica.

  15. It still exists, by the way, encyclopedias.

  16. Just an FYI.

  17. I thought it better to quote from this than Wikipedia on a Sunday morning, but anyways.

  18. Quote,

  19. French revolutionaries believed they did not simply topple a government, but establish a new social order founded on freedom and equality.

  20. To mark the advent of the new age of liberty, they replaced in October 1793 the old Gregorian calendar with a new Republican calendar.

  21. Henceforth, the year of the official proclamation of the Republic, 1792, would become year one.

  22. The Republican calendar was abandoned by Napoleon on January 1st, 1806.

  23. This wouldn't be the first time that time was to be altered or adjusted by revolutionaries.

  24. In fact, it's happened a number of times throughout history.

  25. Another example, in AD 67, during the first Jewish-Roman war,

  26. the priestly class of Jerusalem began minting coins with the year one as a way of rejecting Roman hegemony.

  27. Three years later, Jerusalem was razed to the ground.

  28. Didn't last for very long.

  29. Nevertheless, revolutionaries and leaders throughout history have sought to control time.

  30. For the control of time means one can control the narrative.

  31. To have godlike power without limits.

  32. Time is a very powerful thing.

  33. Money comes and goes.

  34. You can buy many things with it.

  35. Jobs can be lost and gained.

  36. But if you control time, you can control the world, or at least your sliver of it.

  37. You could have anything you wanted, or at least, at the very least,

  38. you could undo those things that you regret.

  39. We're coming to Ecclesiastes 3.

  40. And we are faced with this concept of time.

  41. However, it does not teach us, Ecclesiastes 3,

  42. how to seize the day, or how to control time,

  43. or how to pursue peak efficiency in life.

  44. Instead, it reveals in us as people that are completely subjects to time.

  45. Not masters of it.

  46. Constantly dominated by it.

  47. Feeling the ache of not having enough of it.

  48. This is the reality of all of us living, as the sage of Ecclesiastes puts it,

  49. a life under the sun.

  50. So our sage continues his disillusioning work.

  51. I used that term last week.

  52. The sage is looking to disillusion us.

  53. Our sage continues his disillusioning work,

  54. confronting our faulty worldview,

  55. so that we can rightly understand, in this case, time.

  56. And more importantly, the one true God who is above time.

  57. So the sage will teach us what it means to,

  58. first, be subjects of time.

  59. The second, the nature of the sovereign over time.

  60. And then finally, he will help us to conduct a proper investigation of the end of time.

  61. And I use the end not as in time ending,

  62. but the purpose of time.

  63. So that we may approach time in an appropriate way,

  64. and thereby live a full and wise life.

  65. So we'll jump right into it.

  66. Let's take a look at the subjects of time.

  67. So the poem we have, verses 1 to 8,

  68. really 2 to 8,

  69. recounts times and seasons,

  70. and captures most, if not all,

  71. of the human experience.

  72. I won't read it all.

  73. Matthew did a great job reading it.

  74. But you can see how it is connected to

  75. mortality, morality, work, creativity, emotions, relationships,

  76. and even conflict.

  77. It recounts how humanity interacts with the world we find ourselves in,

  78. regardless of culture and era.

  79. I mean, you read this poem,

  80. and it applies to us as much as it applied to the people

  81. that were hearing it for the first time by the sage.

  82. I'll just read the second verse and the eighth verse,

  83. the beginning and the end of the poem.

  84. And it goes like this.

  85. Actually, I'll start in verse 1.

  86. For everything there is a season,

  87. and a time for every matter under heaven.

  88. Verse 2.

  89. The poem begins,

  90. A time to be born, a time to die,

  91. a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.

  92. Verse 8.

  93. A time to love, and a time to hate,

  94. a time of war, and a time of peace.

  95. If this were a situational,

  96. a list of situational circumstances that we could control

  97. through the right amount of discernment,

  98. or cunning, or wisdom,

  99. starting such a list,

  100. and ending such a list with the extremities of the human life

  101. wouldn't be the best approach.

  102. Why?

  103. If this was a list of things we could get better at,

  104. you can't get better at being born.

  105. We are completely,

  106. we have no control over the circumstances of our birth.

  107. Who we were born to,

  108. where we were born,

  109. who our parents are,

  110. how they raised us in those early years,

  111. nor do we

  112. master the moment of our death.

  113. And I briefly mentioned this last week,

  114. but it goes again this week really well.

  115. The euthanasia regime in our country,

  116. it flagrantly, flagrantly disregards

  117. this natural reality of death,

  118. that it is out of our control.

  119. Yet even for those who choose assisted suicide,

  120. they do so precisely because their lives feel out of control.

  121. This week,

  122. it hit home to me afresh,

  123. because Robert Munch,

  124. the famed and beloved children's storyteller,

  125. announced at the age of 70

  126. that he's going to be pursuing assisted suicide

  127. because of medical illness.

  128. It's an affront,

  129. a flagrant affront

  130. to the sovereignty of God.

  131. The poem also examines the extremes of social interactions.

  132. We see this in verse 8.

  133. It focuses on love and hate,

  134. war and peace.

  135. And in many circumstances,

  136. you cannot control these things

  137. because we cannot control or influence other people.

  138. and are often driven into situations

  139. by the wills of others.

  140. What do you do when a nation declares war on you?

  141. What do you do when your neighbor declares war on you?

  142. Many things are out of our control.

  143. So you see this section,

  144. verses 2 to 8,

  145. this poem that the sage is writing,

  146. reflecting on the human experience,

  147. it does not outline a vision of a balanced life

  148. that we can create,

  149. but rather describes the harsh reality

  150. that human life is filled with.

  151. It's filled with ups and downs.

  152. Some victories,

  153. oftentimes more tragedies.

  154. Some things we can control,

  155. and many, many more things beyond our control.

  156. Such things are often against our will

  157. and our best judgment.

  158. So you see verses 2 to 8,

  159. this poem describes what life is like

  160. for us who live under the sun

  161. and those that are subject to time,

  162. not masters over it.

  163. So we have no control over each year

  164. or month or hour or minute

  165. as we live them.

  166. We can't reverse time

  167. or bend it to our will.

  168. This is going to hit home pretty closely

  169. to Christine and I,

  170. a dear couple that were mentors to us

  171. when we were dating and got engaged

  172. and then afterwards.

  173. We don't keep in contact with them too often,

  174. but they're very dear to us.

  175. Monday, the wife, Catherine,

  176. she's going to find out

  177. if she has cancer for the third time.

  178. And this time,

  179. it's a very aggressive cancer

  180. if she's going to get diagnosed to it.

  181. diagnosed with it, rather.

  182. We can't control any of that.

  183. We can't control any of it.

  184. We are subjects to time.

  185. We are not masters of time.

  186. Life happens to us.

  187. We don't happen to time.

  188. So once again,

  189. the sage,

  190. after he's done reciting this poem,

  191. asks the question

  192. that we've seen in chapter 2,

  193. but he asks again in verse 9,

  194. and he says this,

  195. what gain has the worker from his toil?

  196. And the answer again is none.

  197. And especially the answer is zero

  198. if our toil is an attempt to master time

  199. or to reverse time

  200. or to somehow get around it.

  201. And a day when the autonomous

  202. and authentic self is held up

  203. as one of the highest,

  204. if not the highest value,

  205. this is a cause for concern.

  206. The sage is telling us

  207. that we aren't as much in control

  208. as we think.

  209. Even with all our carefully curated

  210. and well-thought-out plans,

  211. life can be somewhat unpredictable,

  212. perhaps even chaotic.

  213. I'm sure you guys can think of situations

  214. where your careful planning

  215. has not gone the way you've hoped for.

  216. A relationship that you valued

  217. has begun to crumble

  218. and it's completely outside of your control.

  219. But we have to remember,

  220. and I've tried to stress this

  221. in the weeks,

  222. the couple weeks that we've had

  223. in Ecclesiastes,

  224. that the sage is not a nihilist,

  225. nor is he a fatalist.

  226. Rather, he's a sober

  227. and hopeful thinker.

  228. You read this,

  229. and maybe it doesn't sound too hopeful,

  230. but it is a hopeful message.

  231. Why?

  232. Because if all there was

  233. in this material world

  234. was to live and to die,

  235. where we were subject to time

  236. and the whims of fate,

  237. then we would be in a very terrible spot

  238. as a human race.

  239. Although the sage,

  240. he ends the poem here,

  241. reflecting on the humanity,

  242. the nature of humanity

  243. in life of,

  244. in light rather,

  245. of life under the sun,

  246. he does not conclude the section.

  247. So he concludes the poem,

  248. but not the section.

  249. As what follows is a description

  250. of the only sovereign over time.

  251. And it is most certainly not us.

  252. So this gets us to our second point.

  253. Who is the sovereign over time?

  254. Look with me in verses 10 to 11.

  255. It'll be on page 16.

  256. Verses 10 and 11.

  257. I have seen the business

  258. that God has given

  259. to the children of man

  260. to be busy with.

  261. He has made everything beautiful

  262. in its time.

  263. Also, he has put eternity

  264. into man's hearts,

  265. yet so that he cannot find out

  266. what God has done

  267. from the beginning to the end.

  268. God has allowed mankind

  269. to exist in this life under the sun.

  270. It is he who has given us

  271. all that occurs

  272. between birth and death.

  273. And we see this connection,

  274. actually, in verse 11.

  275. It connects God

  276. as the creator and curator

  277. and the one who is sovereign

  278. over time

  279. because it connects to verse 1.

  280. Let's read verse 1 again.

  281. For everything there is a season

  282. and a time for every matter

  283. under heaven.

  284. It is God who is at work

  285. with everything,

  286. making everything beautiful

  287. or suitable in its time

  288. under heaven.

  289. So what does this tell us

  290. about the world?

  291. First, that the world

  292. isn't a random cosmic coincidence,

  293. that we didn't happen

  294. to exist by chance,

  295. but rather God alone

  296. has appointed the time

  297. so that everything,

  298. every birth,

  299. every death,

  300. every tear,

  301. every embrace,

  302. every interaction,

  303. it remains under

  304. his watchful eye.

  305. Nothing can bypass him.

  306. Nothing surprises him.

  307. Verse 14 also speaks

  308. to the sovereignty of God

  309. over all creation.

  310. This is what it says

  311. in verse 14.

  312. I perceive that whatever God does

  313. endures forever.

  314. Nothing can be added to it

  315. nor anything taken from it.

  316. God has done it.

  317. We'll get to that last part

  318. of verse 14 in a bit,

  319. but I'll pause there.

  320. God has done it.

  321. Because God has created time,

  322. he's not bound by time.

  323. He is sovereign over time.

  324. He is complete and whole

  325. in every aspect of who he is.

  326. Theologians,

  327. they'll talk about God being simple.

  328. Not simple as in stupid,

  329. but that he is,

  330. who he is in its fullness,

  331. it's not that God is

  332. sometimes loving

  333. and sometimes merciful.

  334. God is loving.

  335. He is merciful.

  336. He is his attributes.

  337. This idea, though,

  338. of God creating time

  339. and not being bound by it

  340. is captured by C.S. Lewis

  341. in mere Christianity

  342. in a wonderful way.

  343. I'll read,

  344. it's a bit of a long quote,

  345. but it really captures

  346. this idea of God

  347. being sovereign over time.

  348. It begins like this,

  349. quote,

  350. almost certainly God

  351. is not in time.

  352. His life does not consist

  353. of moments following

  354. one another.

  355. If a million people

  356. are praying to him

  357. at 10.30 tonight,

  358. he need not listen to them

  359. all in that one little snippet

  360. which we call 10.30.

  361. 10.30 and every other moment

  362. from the beginning

  363. of the world

  364. is always the present for him.

  365. If you like to put it that way,

  366. he has all eternity

  367. in which to listen

  368. to the split second

  369. of prayer put up

  370. by a pilot

  371. as his plane crashes

  372. in flames.

  373. That is difficult,

  374. I know.

  375. You can get the idea

  376. if you think of it like this.

  377. Suppose I am writing a novel.

  378. I write,

  379. Mary laid down her work.

  380. Next moment

  381. came a knock at the door.

  382. For Mary,

  383. who has to live

  384. in the imaginary time

  385. of my story,

  386. there is no interval

  387. between laying down

  388. the work

  389. and hearing the knock.

  390. But I,

  391. who am Mary's maker,

  392. do not live

  393. in that imaginary time at all.

  394. Between writing

  395. the first half

  396. of that sentence

  397. and the second,

  398. I might sit down

  399. and have lunch

  400. or I might spend

  401. a whole year.

  402. It makes no difference

  403. to Mary's time

  404. inside the story.

  405. In the same way,

  406. God has not hurried along

  407. in the time stream

  408. with the events

  409. of the universe.

  410. He has infinite attention

  411. to spare

  412. for each one of us.

  413. End quote.

  414. God is completely

  415. outside of time.

  416. He is like,

  417. as Lewis talks about,

  418. the author of time.

  419. However,

  420. God is not just an author

  421. who writes a story

  422. then leaves the book

  423. on a shelf

  424. to unfold

  425. as he has planned.

  426. Instead,

  427. he is deeply involved

  428. in the human experience.

  429. In fact,

  430. we find throughout Scripture

  431. that he constantly

  432. enters into the story himself.

  433. Once again,

  434. verse 11 addresses this

  435. by saying that God

  436. makes everything beautiful

  437. in its time,

  438. which also carries this idea

  439. that it's orderly

  440. and fitting.

  441. And in doing so,

  442. he stays deeply involved.

  443. Still,

  444. verse 11 also reveals

  445. that God created mankind

  446. with a profound understanding

  447. that life is about more

  448. than we see under the sun.

  449. He has given us a conscience

  450. and placed desires within us

  451. that are not just primal

  452. or physical.

  453. Our emotions run deep

  454. and are complex

  455. and as we've discussed

  456. over the past couple weeks,

  457. we have this innate need

  458. for meaning and purpose

  459. and this is what separates us

  460. from the animal kingdom.

  461. This is a huge aspect

  462. of what it means

  463. to be made in the image

  464. and likeness of God.

  465. But if the first part

  466. of verse 11

  467. speaks to how we are different

  468. from the animal kingdom,

  469. the second part

  470. of verse 11

  471. speaks to how we are

  472. completely different

  473. from God.

  474. It says that although

  475. we are given a mind

  476. that desires meaning

  477. and desperately searches

  478. for deeper understanding,

  479. we are unable to know

  480. what we yearn to understand.

  481. We see just a little snippet of it.

  482. We cannot exhaust our search.

  483. Not only that,

  484. but returning to verses 9 and 10,

  485. we also see that God

  486. has given us this additional

  487. toilsome labor and business

  488. that further frustrates us.

  489. So in just thinking

  490. and pondering through this text,

  491. just to ask the question,

  492. is this like a bit

  493. of a sick joke?

  494. Does God give us

  495. this mind to understand

  496. but then frustrates

  497. our ability

  498. and search

  499. to find this ultimate meaning?

  500. Why give us a conscience

  501. and yet limit

  502. our ability

  503. to achieve our pursuit?

  504. And not a pursuit,

  505. but the pursuit.

  506. So is God playing

  507. a sick game

  508. or

  509. is it an act

  510. of loving mercy?

  511. And again,

  512. I talked about

  513. the sage being

  514. sober-minded

  515. and hopeful

  516. in his quest,

  517. in his investigation.

  518. So I ask,

  519. where is the hope in this?

  520. And to answer that

  521. question,

  522. we're going to consider

  523. verses 12 to 15.

  524. And the sage here

  525. will have two perceptions.

  526. He will perceive

  527. two different things.

  528. He will examine the matter.

  529. Look with me

  530. at this first perception

  531. from the sage,

  532. starting in verse 12.

  533. I perceived

  534. that there is nothing

  535. better for them

  536. than to be joyful

  537. and to do good

  538. as long as they live.

  539. It's talking about humankind.

  540. Also that everyone

  541. should eat

  542. and drink

  543. and take pleasure

  544. in all his toil.

  545. That is God's gift

  546. to man.

  547. I'll stop there

  548. before we get

  549. to the next one.

  550. God provides us

  551. with so much

  552. to enjoy

  553. in this world.

  554. So much to discover.

  555. So much to learn about.

  556. He gives us

  557. an incredible table

  558. of things to try,

  559. so to speak.

  560. We can enjoy this.

  561. We can enjoy food,

  562. moments with our

  563. loved ones,

  564. our spouse,

  565. our parents,

  566. our children,

  567. our friends.

  568. We can enjoy

  569. physical activity.

  570. We can enjoy

  571. a good book.

  572. Maybe

  573. a beautiful garden

  574. or a stroll

  575. through the woods.

  576. If some of you

  577. remember the

  578. Messiah Reads

  579. we did with

  580. the book on the,

  581. it's kind of a bit

  582. of a survey

  583. on the prayer book

  584. by a lady named

  585. Julie Lane Gay.

  586. We did a

  587. Zoom Q&A with her

  588. and she talked about

  589. how she's

  590. an amateur botanist

  591. and she's convinced

  592. that roses exist

  593. simply for our enjoyment.

  594. She's convinced of it.

  595. I mean other plants,

  596. vegetation,

  597. it has

  598. a purpose

  599. that feeds

  600. other wildlife

  601. or pollinates

  602. or whatever

  603. but she's convinced

  604. that roses

  605. are strictly for us.

  606. I like that thought.

  607. I have no idea

  608. if it's true

  609. but it sounds wonderful

  610. and it sounds just

  611. the type of thing

  612. that God would do.

  613. We enjoy life

  614. but again

  615. we remember

  616. that we must enjoy it

  617. in its proper context.

  618. Recognizing that God

  619. is the source

  620. of all good gifts

  621. that he is sovereign

  622. over all

  623. including time

  624. but including the gifts

  625. that he gives us

  626. as people that live

  627. in this time

  628. under the sun.

  629. So I'll say

  630. as you enjoy your gifts

  631. be thankful people.

  632. Practice generosity.

  633. thank the Lord

  634. often

  635. and always

  636. when you realize

  637. that what you have

  638. and what you are enjoying

  639. is from him.

  640. So God's gifts

  641. should be appreciated

  642. for what they are

  643. while they last

  644. and attempting

  645. to make them permanent

  646. is both impossible

  647. and again

  648. an affront

  649. and a challenge

  650. to God's sovereignty.

  651. So on one hand

  652. we ask the question

  653. why on earth

  654. would God

  655. give us

  656. this ability

  657. but also

  658. an inability

  659. to pursue

  660. and understand

  661. kind of the totality

  662. of reality

  663. and the sage

  664. is saying

  665. listen

  666. he has given us

  667. a ton of reality

  668. to enjoy

  669. so enjoy it.

  670. Enjoy it.

  671. Don't overlook

  672. what you have

  673. because you are searching

  674. for this ultimate quest.

  675. Enjoy what he has given you.

  676. However the second perception

  677. helps us to better understand

  678. why we are given

  679. the gift

  680. of consciousness

  681. despite the frustrating

  682. and toilful limitations

  683. that he has described

  684. a couple verses

  685. before.

  686. Look with me

  687. at verses 14 and 15.

  688. I perceived

  689. the second perception

  690. I perceived

  691. that whatever God

  692. does endure

  693. forever

  694. whatever God does

  695. endures forever

  696. nothing can be added to it

  697. nor anything

  698. taken from it

  699. God has done it

  700. so that people

  701. fear before him

  702. that which is

  703. already has been

  704. that which is to be

  705. already has been

  706. and God seeks

  707. what has been

  708. driven away.

  709. God is all powerful

  710. we've established that

  711. he is outside of time

  712. he is a sovereign

  713. over time

  714. over everything

  715. that we see

  716. he sees

  717. he understands

  718. everything perfectly

  719. and he overlooks

  720. nothing

  721. and yet

  722. and yet

  723. in his kindness

  724. in his kindness

  725. he allows us

  726. to feel small

  727. he allows us

  728. to recognize

  729. our finiteness

  730. and to experience

  731. the sting

  732. and the prick

  733. of broken relationships

  734. and pain

  735. and death

  736. all resulting

  737. from sin

  738. sin being that

  739. act of turning away

  740. from the sovereign God

  741. and choosing ourselves

  742. ourselves

  743. as the king

  744. of our world

  745. the main character

  746. of our story

  747. giving into selfish desires

  748. and why is that?

  749. Second part of verse 14

  750. God has done it

  751. so that people

  752. fear before him

  753. so that people

  754. fear before him

  755. that we may know

  756. that he is

  757. great

  758. and that we are small

  759. that our existence

  760. is brief

  761. and

  762. but for a moment

  763. while his

  764. is eternal

  765. and as we fear him

  766. which

  767. means for sure

  768. to revere him

  769. and to be in awe of him

  770. but also to remember

  771. that God is one

  772. to be feared

  773. okay

  774. there is no strong man

  775. above God

  776. he is

  777. the epitome

  778. of strength

  779. he is to be feared

  780. but also revered

  781. also honored

  782. and as we fear him

  783. we find ourselves

  784. being drawn to him

  785. okay

  786. when we are small

  787. and we are confronted

  788. with the passage

  789. of time

  790. where

  791. almost certainly

  792. there is more time

  793. behind us

  794. than ahead of us

  795. and there is nothing

  796. we can do about it

  797. okay

  798. dear Catherine

  799. is waiting

  800. for

  801. an appointment

  802. tomorrow

  803. to find out

  804. if she has cancer

  805. okay

  806. and there is nothing

  807. she can do about it

  808. I mean she cannot go

  809. to the appointment

  810. that is not going to

  811. change what is going

  812. on in her body

  813. and in light

  814. of that

  815. we turn to God

  816. who is

  817. huge

  818. and infinite

  819. and the sovereign

  820. over time

  821. and he is also

  822. kind

  823. and loving

  824. we find ourselves

  825. drawn to him

  826. he opens our eyes

  827. through our

  828. finiteness

  829. through our pain

  830. through our suffering

  831. through allowing us

  832. to feel the pain

  833. of this existence

  834. under the sun

  835. because that opens

  836. our eyes

  837. to see him

  838. at least in part

  839. for who he truly is

  840. but as the ultimate

  841. purpose of our pursuit

  842. of meaning

  843. we find ourselves

  844. again

  845. only going so far

  846. and finding that

  847. we are toiling

  848. under the sun

  849. in our quest

  850. to know

  851. the one true God

  852. the sovereign

  853. over time

  854. and yet

  855. even if we know

  856. we must fear God

  857. the question is

  858. how then do we

  859. ascend to him

  860. how do we

  861. how do we break

  862. through that ceiling

  863. how do we

  864. how do we

  865. enter into

  866. his presence

  867. our limitations

  868. especially as those

  869. subjected to time

  870. make us

  871. genuinely hopeless

  872. unless God

  873. himself

  874. intervenes

  875. this brings us

  876. to our last

  877. point

  878. the end

  879. of time

  880. in his

  881. graciousness

  882. God does intervene

  883. that's a wonderful

  884. beautiful news

  885. of the gospel

  886. that we are

  887. powerless

  888. to connect

  889. with God

  890. to deal

  891. with our sin

  892. to find

  893. purpose

  894. and meaning

  895. and God

  896. doesn't say

  897. you didn't

  898. try hard enough

  899. or there's

  900. just not enough

  901. runway for you

  902. to get to me

  903. he intervenes

  904. into our

  905. existence

  906. the author

  907. enters the

  908. story

  909. in his

  910. graciousness

  911. God does

  912. not merely

  913. set the

  914. times and

  915. seasons for

  916. our existence

  917. under the

  918. sun

  919. but he

  920. designs

  921. and directs

  922. time

  923. towards an

  924. end

  925. an aim

  926. that culminates

  927. in his

  928. ultimate

  929. purpose

  930. for humanity

  931. all of time

  932. is centered

  933. around the

  934. incarnation

  935. the life

  936. the death

  937. the resurrection

  938. and ascension

  939. of Christ

  940. he has

  941. redeemed us

  942. so that we

  943. may know

  944. and be known

  945. by the triune

  946. God

  947. and this is

  948. at the very

  949. center of time

  950. itself

  951. the purpose

  952. of time

  953. what do I

  954. mean by this

  955. just a few

  956. bible verses

  957. Mark chapter 1

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  958. 14 to 15

  959. Jesus came into

  960. Galilee

  961. proclaiming the

  962. gospel of God

  963. and saying

  964. the time

  965. is fulfilled

  966. and the kingdom

  967. of God

  968. is at hand

  969. repent and

  970. believe in the

  971. gospel

  972. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  973. 1 and 2

  974. long ago

  975. at many times

  976. and in many

  977. ways God

  978. spoke to our

  979. fathers by the

  980. prophets

  981. verse 2

  982. but in these

  983. last days

  984. he has spoken

  985. to us by his

  986. son

  987. whom he

  988. appointed

  989. the heir

  990. of all things

  991. through whom

  992. also he created

  993. the world

  994. Romans chapter 5

    Romans 5:6

  995. verse 6

  996. for while we

  997. were still weak

  998. at the right

  999. time

  1000. Christ died

  1001. for the

  1002. ungodly

  1003. John 13

  1004. 1

  1005. now before

  1006. the feast

  1007. of the

  1008. Passover

  1009. when Jesus

  1010. knew that

  1011. his hour

  1012. had come

  1013. to depart

  1014. out of this

  1015. world

  1016. to the

  1017. father

  1018. having loved

  1019. his own

  1020. who were

  1021. in the

  1022. world

  1023. he loved

  1024. them to

  1025. the end

  1026. you see

  1027. when we

  1028. put our

  1029. faith

  1030. in Christ

  1031. Jesus

  1032. he redeems

  1033. us

  1034. from our

  1035. sins

  1036. rescues us

  1037. from sin

  1038. and death

  1039. but he also

  1040. rescues us

  1041. from being

  1042. subjects to

  1043. the cruelty

  1044. and tyranny

  1045. of time

  1046. so that this

  1047. moment

  1048. that we are

  1049. in this

  1050. temporal life

  1051. that we find

  1052. ourselves in

  1053. that in

  1054. some ways

  1055. we can enjoy

  1056. to its

  1057. fullness

  1058. but the

  1059. other times

  1060. we feel

  1061. the pain

  1062. and the

  1063. frustration

  1064. of it

  1065. we put

  1066. our faith

  1067. in the

  1068. one who

  1069. is sovereign

  1070. over time

  1071. and friends

  1072. his redemption

  1073. that he gives

  1074. us is not

  1075. for a time

  1076. and this is

  1077. how he redeems

  1078. us from time

  1079. for redemption

  1080. isn't for 10

  1081. years or

  1082. for 100

  1083. years or

  1084. even a

  1085. thousand years

  1086. it is

  1087. eternal

  1088. imagine if

  1089. the redemption

  1090. of God was

  1091. for a time

  1092. say 100

  1093. years

  1094. we knew

  1095. the presence

  1096. of God

  1097. in heaven

  1098. for 100

  1099. years

  1100. and then

  1101. the 99th

  1102. year

  1103. it's the

  1104. 12th month

  1105. it's like

  1106. five minutes

  1107. till New

  1108. Year's Eve

  1109. and God's

  1110. looking at his

  1111. watch saying

  1112. listen it's

  1113. been great

  1114. it's been a

  1115. slice

  1116. but back

  1117. you go

  1118. that would

  1119. be a huge

  1120. type of

  1121. torture

  1122. and almost

  1123. a hellish

  1124. sick

  1125. redemption

  1126. or something

  1127. that was

  1128. called

  1129. redemption

  1130. but no

  1131. he redeems

  1132. us from

  1133. time

  1134. why

  1135. by bringing

  1136. us into

  1137. his presence

  1138. forever

  1139. so salvation

  1140. is eternal

  1141. that is why

  1142. after some

  1143. of our

  1144. prayers

  1145. we say

  1146. world without

  1147. end

  1148. because it

  1149. reminds us

  1150. that we

  1151. will be

  1152. with God

  1153. not for

  1154. a moment

  1155. or a series

  1156. of moments

  1157. or even

  1158. for a

  1159. millennia

  1160. but forever

  1161. okay

  1162. not subjected

  1163. to time

  1164. no more

  1165. under the

  1166. heavy weight

  1167. and tyranny

  1168. of time

  1169. however

  1170. we are still

  1171. people living

  1172. under the

  1173. sun

  1174. even though

  1175. we are

  1176. promised

  1177. eternal

  1178. life with

  1179. Christ

  1180. all we

  1181. know is

  1182. this mortal

  1183. life

  1184. put it

  1185. another way

  1186. how then

  1187. are we

  1188. to live

  1189. as people

  1190. who are

  1191. already

  1192. recipients

  1193. of the

  1194. eternal

  1195. salvation

  1196. that has

  1197. been promised

  1198. to us

  1199. but do

  1200. not yet

  1201. experience

  1202. it in

  1203. its

  1204. fullness

  1205. now

  1206. I think

  1207. Jesus gives

  1208. us the

  1209. answer

  1210. Matthew

    Matthew 24:36

  1211. 24

  1212. verses

  1213. 36

  1214. 42

  1215. and 44

  1216. I've just

  1217. plucked out

  1218. the key

  1219. bits there

  1220. but really

  1221. this whole

  1222. section is

  1223. very important

  1224. to meditate

  1225. on

  1226. this is

  1227. what Jesus

  1228. says

  1229. but concerning

  1230. that day

  1231. an hour

  1232. no one

  1233. knows

  1234. this is

  1235. Jesus

  1236. talking

  1237. about

  1238. his

  1239. return

  1240. not even

  1241. the angels

  1242. of heaven

  1243. nor the

  1244. son

  1245. but the

  1246. father

  1247. only

  1248. therefore

  1249. stay

  1250. awake

  1251. for you

  1252. do not

  1253. know

  1254. on what

  1255. day

  1256. your

  1257. Lord

  1258. is

  1259. coming

  1260. therefore

  1261. you

  1262. also

  1263. must

  1264. be

  1265. ready

  1266. for the

  1267. son

  1268. of man

  1269. is

  1270. coming

  1271. at an

  1272. hour

  1273. you

  1274. do

  1275. not

  1276. expect

  1277. Jesus

  1278. is telling

  1279. us

  1280. to live

  1281. this life

  1282. under

  1283. the

  1284. son

  1285. as people

  1286. who are

  1287. already

  1288. recipients

  1289. of eternal

  1290. life

  1291. to not

  1292. get hung

  1293. up on

  1294. the

  1295. beauties

  1296. and the

  1297. pleasures

  1298. of this

  1299. world

  1300. as good

  1301. as they

  1302. are

  1303. to not

  1304. put our

  1305. eternal

  1306. significance

  1307. in them

  1308. but constantly

  1309. look to

  1310. Christ

  1311. look to

  1312. eternity

  1313. look to

  1314. heaven

  1315. as those

  1316. who fear

  1317. the Lord

  1318. we respond

  1319. to his

  1320. salvation

  1321. by growing

  1322. in our

  1323. love for

  1324. him

  1325. and increasing

  1326. our faith

  1327. that his

  1328. promises

  1329. so that we

  1330. can believe

  1331. that his

  1332. promises are

  1333. true

  1334. and eagerly

  1335. awaiting his

  1336. return

  1337. when all

  1338. will be

  1339. made right

  1340. where the

  1341. tyranny

  1342. of time

  1343. no longer

  1344. exists

  1345. so

  1346. church

  1347. enjoy this

  1348. life for

  1349. what it

  1350. is

  1351. enjoy it

  1352. this

  1353. afternoon

  1354. I don't

  1355. know

  1356. take a

  1357. nap

  1358. enjoy

  1359. a beautiful

  1360. walk

  1361. have a

  1362. lovely

  1363. dinner

  1364. tonight

  1365. I don't

  1366. know

  1367. whatever

  1368. it is

  1369. that you

  1370. truly

  1371. enjoy

  1372. enjoy

  1373. it

  1374. for what

  1375. it is

  1376. a gift

  1377. from God

  1378. but a

  1379. fleeting

  1380. gift

  1381. and look

  1382. forward

  1383. instead

  1384. to the

  1385. life to

  1386. come

  1387. allow that

  1388. pleasure

  1389. that you

  1390. experience

  1391. on earth

  1392. just point

  1393. you to

  1394. the

  1395. pleasures

  1396. you will

  1397. have

  1398. forevermore

  1399. in

  1400. Christ's

  1401. presence

  1402. no longer

  1403. subjects of

  1404. time

  1405. but children

  1406. of the

  1407. sovereign

  1408. over time

  1409. do not

  1410. try to

  1411. break free

  1412. from the

  1413. times or

  1414. the seasons

  1415. as if you

  1416. could

  1417. do not

  1418. try to

  1419. control

  1420. time

  1421. because you

  1422. cannot

  1423. instead

  1424. look to

  1425. Jesus

  1426. the one

  1427. who has

  1428. conquered

  1429. death

  1430. who gives

  1431. us eternal

  1432. life

  1433. through his

  1434. precious

  1435. sacrifice

  1436. and victory

  1437. over the

  1438. tyranny

  1439. of time

  1440. let us

  1441. pray

  1442. how grand

  1443. is your

  1444. redemption

  1445. oh God

  1446. that you

  1447. even rescue

  1448. us

  1449. from time

  1450. and the

  1451. pressures

  1452. of this

  1453. mortal life

  1454. and the

  1455. toilsome

  1456. labor

  1457. that we

  1458. are engaged

  1459. in

  1460. under

  1461. the

  1462. sun

  1463. and yet

  1464. even still

  1465. you show

  1466. mercy to

  1467. us

  1468. so that

  1469. we can

  1470. enjoy

  1471. this

  1472. world

  1473. and the

  1474. problem

  1475. is always

  1476. that we

  1477. try to

  1478. enjoy

  1479. this

  1480. world

  1481. as if

  1482. it were

  1483. heaven

  1484. as if

  1485. it were

  1486. the

  1487. kingdom

  1488. of God

  1489. and yet

  1490. we

  1491. reject

  1492. you

  1493. we want

  1494. the kingdom

  1495. without

  1496. the king

  1497. and we

  1498. we repent

  1499. of that

  1500. help us

  1501. to repent

  1502. of that

  1503. always

  1504. help us

  1505. to look

  1506. to you

  1507. greatly

  1508. anticipating

  1509. your return

  1510. whenever that

  1511. may be

  1512. whenever

  1513. you decide

  1514. whenever

  1515. that time

  1516. will come

  1517. about

  1518. Lord we

  1519. thank you

  1520. for the

  1521. cross

  1522. that it

  1523. happened

  1524. at a very

  1525. specific

  1526. time

  1527. in a very

  1528. specific

  1529. place

  1530. and it

  1531. wasn't an

  1532. accident

  1533. but it was

  1534. your good

  1535. design

  1536. Lord

  1537. help us

  1538. to be

  1539. people

  1540. that live

  1541. eternal

  1542. lives

  1543. even though

  1544. we are

  1545. here

  1546. under the

  1547. sun

  1548. we pray

  1549. this

  1550. in

  1551. Christ's

  1552. name

  1553. amen

  1554. holy
