  1. Lord, we thank you that you are a God of love.

  2. And your love isn't merely a sentimental kind of love,

  3. ! But a love that desires to see us enter into and walk in fullness.

  4. And sometimes your love means that you have to expose some of our shortcomings, our sins, our bad habits,

  5. the things that hold us back from walking fully and wholly as your children.

  6. Lord, your love disciplines us.

  7. And as we enter into this time of listening and learning this morning,

  8. help us to have ears to hear.

  9. Those kind of ears that don't just hear your word, but do your word, consider your word, take heart your word.

  10. And Lord, we pray that by your Spirit's help, that we would walk in this fullness, walk in this obedience.

  11. Lord, that you offer to us not an inferior vision of the human life, but the most superior vision.

  12. We pray all this in Christ's mighty name. Amen.

  13. The term virtue signaling was introduced, at least from my research,

  14. into Western vocabulary about 10 years ago, during the U.S. elections.

  15. Things got really intense with social media.

  16. People started throwing barbs at one another, and this idea of virtue signaling became a thing.

  17. It describes an act of openly showcasing one's awareness of important issues, the important issues,

  18. especially political and social ones.

  19. And we do this by showcasing our moral superiority with whatever issues are the right issues,

  20. rather than taking meaningful action.

  21. So it's no surprise, then, that virtue signaling remains still a very highly political and social practice online.

  22. And we've observed this in Canada in the last few years.

  23. We're condemning historical figures of our past,

  24. or overlooking the flaws of past heroes becomes a thing.

  25. Another example of virtue signaling is wearing a mask, or not wearing a mask.

  26. Labeling people as Hitler.

  27. Labeling people as Stalin.

  28. It's a way that we can show that we are better than others without doing much.

  29. Without having to get much skin in the game.

  30. However, virtue signaling, if it's about 10 years old,

  31. it's not just limited to politics and social issues.

  32. It affects religion.

  33. Moreover, it's not a recent phenomenon, but a very ancient one.

  34. We refer to such religious virtue signaling, at least in a religious sense, as hypocrisy.

  35. Something that is too close to home for religiously minded men and women.

  36. We hear hypocrisy a lot, and either we've had experiences with hypocritical church leaders,

  37. or hypocritical churchgoers, or we ourselves find ourselves in the position of being a hypocrite.

  38. We know this term all too well, all too personally.

  39. We continue on in Ecclesiastes chapter 5.

    Ecclesiastes 5 chapter mention

  40. And here the sage has, up till now, spent a good amount of ink reflecting on the human experience.

  41. Examining what it is to live as a human, being a man or woman, as one under the sun, in this mortal life.

  42. In chapter 5, he switches a little bit, and he begins writing instructions to us.

  43. All of which articulate what it means to properly worship the Lord, and to avoid hypocrisy.

  44. And in doing so, he helps us to understand that true and godly worship, free of show and pomp,

  45. is worshiping God with reverence, integrity, and a sincerity and honesty.

  46. Notice that perfection isn't in that list.

  47. I'll read that list again.

  48. That we would worship God with reverence, integrity, and a sincerity and honesty.

  49. One of the commentators I spent some time looking at this week, a guy named David Kidner, he's since passed away.

  50. He spoke of this section, Ecclesiastes 5, verses 1-5, as a text written for,

    Ecclesiastes 5:1–5

  51. the well-meaning person who enjoys a good sing, and cheerfully attends church,

  52. but who listens with half an ear, and never quite follows through on what they have promised to do for God.

  53. In other words, the text reveals the outwardly pious person whose inner life remains untouched.

  54. Friends, let us listen carefully to God's word this morning,

  55. because I have a feeling that it's going to hit kind of close to home.

  56. We are in the same boat together this morning.

  57. Let's dig in.

  58. Verse 1 of Ecclesiastes chapter 5.

    Ecclesiastes 5 chapter mention

  59. Guard your steps when you go to the house of God.

  60. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools,

  61. for they do not know what they are doing is evil.

  62. To understand the depth of verse 1,

  63. we need to recall two key stories from the Old Testament that verse 1 draws upon.

  64. The first instance is from Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  65. It's a very, very famous scene, but if you're unfamiliar with it or forgotten about it,

  66. it is a scene where Moses, he has fleed after killing an Egyptian,

  67. even though he is one of the princes of Egypt.

  68. He escapes into the desert,

  69. and he gets married, and he is tending his father-in-law's flock.

  70. And in doing so, he encounters the Lord for the first time as the Lord appears to him in a burning bush.

  71. Exodus chapter 3, verses 5 and 6, it reads like this.

    Exodus 3:5

  72. Then he said, this is God speaking,

  73. Do not come near.

  74. Take your sandals off of your feet,

  75. for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.

  76. Verse 6,

  77. And Moses said,

  78. or sorry, and then God said,

  79. I am the God of your father,

  80. the God of Abraham,

  81. the God of Isaac,

  82. the God of Jacob.

  83. And Moses hid his face,

  84. for he was afraid to look at God.

  85. In this scene,

  86. again, a very famous scene,

  87. a famous biblical story,

  88. Moses cautiously approaches the Lord.

  89. He does not approach the Lord as an equal.

  90. In fact, he has no business being in the Lord's presence whatsoever.

  91. He rightly removes his sandals,

  92. rightly hides his face from the Lord.

  93. His posture towards the Lord

  94. is a cautious, reverent one.

  95. It's connected to that first part of verse 1.

  96. Guard your steps when you go to the house of the Lord.

  97. The second scene is from 1 Samuel chapter 15.

    1 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  98. Not as well known as Exodus 3,

  99. but still a fairly well known section in scripture.

  100. The background goes something like this.

  101. King Saul, the first king of Israel,

  102. he is doing right by the Lord,

  103. but doing a lot of wrong by the Lord as well.

  104. Now, he is told by the prophet Samuel

  105. to go to war against the Amalekites.

  106. We won't get into the reason why.

  107. The Amalekites, by and large,

  108. are a rotten people.

  109. You can talk to me afterwards

  110. why I'm saying that.

  111. In scripture, they are described

  112. as being a very evil people.

  113. And Samuel says to Saul,

  114. the words of the Lord,

  115. that he is to put everything to the sword.

  116. Everything.

  117. He is to utterly wipe out the Amalekites,

  118. even their livestock.

  119. The victory is won.

  120. Samuel goes to visit Saul.

  121. And there's a very famous line,

  122. I'm not going to read it,

  123. but I will read a section of it shortly,

  124. where Samuel says to Saul,

  125. what is that bleeding I hear?

  126. Because what he is hearing

  127. is the bleeding of sheep.

  128. Which is to say that King Saul

  129. did not obey the words of the Lord.

  130. He did not obey God

  131. to put everything to the sword.

  132. And he did not do that

  133. because he wanted to keep the spoils for himself.

  134. I'll read 1 Samuel chapter 15,

    1 Samuel 15 chapter mention

  135. starting in verse 21,

  136. verse 22 rather,

  137. to verse 23.

  138. And Samuel said,

  139. Has the Lord as great delight

  140. in burnt offerings and sacrifices

  141. as in obeying the voice of the Lord?

  142. Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice,

  143. and to listen than the fat of rams.

  144. For rebellion is a sin of divination,

  145. and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry.

  146. Because, Saul,

  147. you have rejected the word of the Lord,

  148. he has also rejected you from being king.

  149. It is worth a read.

  150. It is a heavy, heavy chapter.

  151. But the point is,

  152. Saul thinks,

  153. I don't have to obey the words of the Lord

  154. because I'm going to keep some of the spoils for myself,

  155. but I'm going to sacrifice to God.

  156. Surely he's going to delight in that.

  157. I'm not listening to him all the way,

  158. but I'm listening to him enough.

  159. And Samuel comes at him

  160. very hard for his disobedience.

  161. King Saul believes

  162. he only needs to appease God.

  163. As if the Lord is

  164. just

  165. a divine being

  166. with an appetite that needs

  167. to be satisfied.

  168. See, Saul here is less concerned

  169. with listening to the Lord,

  170. obeying the Lord,

  171. and more focused on

  172. his own glory,

  173. his own prize,

  174. his own bounty,

  175. his own well-being.

  176. God, for King Saul,

  177. is an inconvenient reality

  178. in his life.

  179. So we have two examples

  180. that the sage draws upon

  181. for verse one.

  182. Both are connected

  183. to how one ought to

  184. approach God reverently.

  185. Moses,

  186. his posture

  187. is praised.

  188. King Saul's rash

  189. disobedience

  190. is condemned.

  191. And the sage here

  192. emphasizes that

  193. the Lord values

  194. genuine reverence,

  195. obedience,

  196. loyalty,

  197. and love

  198. from the heart.

  199. That one has

  200. a desire

  201. and affections

  202. towards the Lord

  203. rather than

  204. a mere ritual

  205. or religious

  206. experience.

  207. experience.

  208. It's not that God

  209. disregards sacrifice.

  210. Rather,

  211. sacrifice should be

  212. an expression

  213. of gratitude

  214. and love.

  215. A heart directed

  216. towards the Lord,

  217. that is what

  218. he is after.

  219. That is essential.

  220. In fact,

  221. offering sacrifice

  222. to the Lord

  223. with a heart

  224. that is distant

  225. from him

  226. and that continually

  227. fails to listen

  228. is considered

  229. an evil act.

  230. we see this

  231. at the end

  232. of verse 1.

  233. For they do not

  234. know,

  235. that is the fool

  236. who sacrifices

  237. with a heart

  238. that is distant

  239. from the Lord,

  240. for they do not

  241. know that they

  242. are doing evil.

  243. So what we are

  244. seeing here

  245. is that a heart

  246. that does not

  247. come to the Lord

  248. with reverence

  249. isn't an indifferent

  250. act,

  251. but an evil one.

  252. Again,

  253. I'll go back

  254. to the beginning.

  255. The Lord

  256. is in his

  257. kindness

  258. and love

  259. bringing us

  260. through Ecclesiastes

  261. not to pound us

  262. into dust,

  263. but to open up

  264. our eyes

  265. so that we may

  266. see how we

  267. have misstepped

  268. and by his grace,

  269. by his strength,

  270. we can turn

  271. towards him.

  272. The key to all

  273. of this,

  274. of course,

  275. is to listen.

  276. Again,

  277. we see this,

  278. verse 1.

  279. To draw near

  280. to listen

  281. is better

  282. than to offer

  283. a sacrifice.

  284. To listen

  285. and hear

  286. in the scriptures

  287. always implies

  288. obedience.

  289. James says,

  290. do not be

  291. hearers of the

  292. word only

  293. and so deceive

  294. yourselves,

  295. but be doers

  296. of the word.

  297. So listening

  298. must be active.

  299. Taking in

  300. the word of God,

  301. considering it

  302. with reverence

  303. and recognizing

  304. that life and

  305. death truly hang

  306. in the balance.

  307. Why?

  308. Because the words

  309. of God aren't

  310. merely advice

  311. or a series

  312. of best practices,

  313. but the very

  314. foundation of

  315. life itself.

  316. The word of God

  317. created the cosmos.

  318. The opening

  319. verses of the

  320. Bible

  321. describe God

  322. speaking life

  323. into existence.

  324. He speaks it

  325. into existence.

  326. With Jesus

  327. on the boat

  328. in the Sea of

  329. Galilee,

  330. the wind and

  331. the waves

  332. are crashing in.

  333. And he

  334. merely speaks

  335. and the wind

  336. and the waves

  337. are stilled.

  338. And then finally

  339. in the book

  340. of Revelation,

  341. at the end

  342. of the age,

  343. we will read

  344. that Christ

  345. will decisively

  346. defeat all

  347. of his foes

  348. with the word

  349. of his mouth.

  350. The word of God

  351. isn't,

  352. again,

  353. a nice

  354. suggestion

  355. or some

  356. good advice

  357. or even

  358. a wonderful

  359. proverb

  360. verb or a

  361. haiku

  362. that you

  363. need to

  364. incorporate

  365. into your

  366. daily meditation.

  367. It is life

  368. itself.

  369. After a difficult

  370. teaching

  371. that he is

  372. the very bread

  373. of life,

  374. Jesus is

  375. abandoned by the

  376. crowds that had

  377. been following him.

  378. And as he

  379. turned to his

  380. disciples

  381. to see if

  382. they too

  383. would abandon

  384. him,

  385. the apostle

  386. Peter says

  387. this,

  388. this is from

  389. John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  390. and verse 67

  391. and 68,

  392. do you want

  393. to go away

  394. as well?

  395. Simon Peter

  396. answered him,

  397. Lord,

  398. to whom

  399. shall we

  400. go?

  401. You have

  402. the words

  403. of eternal

  404. life.

  405. The point

  406. is this,

  407. God's words

  408. are powerful

  409. and ought not

  410. to be casually

  411. considered or

  412. conveniently

  413. dismissed

  414. because God

  415. himself ought

  416. not to be

  417. treated casually

  418. or conveniently

  419. dismissed.

  420. Yes,

  421. we must

  422. approach the

  423. Lord with

  424. reverence

  425. and honor

  426. and awe.

  427. We must

  428. understand that

  429. he is big

  430. and we are

  431. small.

  432. And on one

  433. hand,

  434. the beauty

  435. of the

  436. Christian faith

  437. is that we

  438. can approach

  439. the Lord

  440. as a father

  441. because Christ

  442. is our

  443. brother.

  444. The church

  445. is the bride

  446. of Christ.

  447. There's a lot

  448. of familial,

  449. intimate language

  450. used in the

  451. Bible to

  452. connect us

  453. relationally

  454. with God.

  455. But we must

  456. remember that

  457. God is the

  458. Lord and

  459. that Christ

  460. is the

  461. King and

  462. he therefore

  463. deserves our

  464. reverence and

  465. respect.

  466. We're not an

  467. every single

  468. day, every

  469. single morning

  470. family,

  471. devotions,

  472. family.

  473. We're trying

  474. our best to

  475. do it.

  476. Do like 15

  477. minutes of

  478. Bible reading

  479. and prayer.

  480. And we have

  481. wiggly kids so

  482. sometimes they

  483. need to, we

  484. have this balance

  485. board, they

  486. need to sit on

  487. the balance

  488. board or they

  489. need to be in

  490. a weird position

  491. because they're

  492. kids, they

  493. can't sit

  494. still.

  495. But sometimes

  496. their posture

  497. is very much

  498. lackadaisical.

  499. They're kind of

  500. sprawled out.

  501. You can see in

  502. their face that

  503. they're bored.

  504. And often

  505. we'll say,

  506. listen, if King

  507. Charles was here

  508. this morning and

  509. he was doing

  510. family devotions

  511. with us,

  512. okay, in his

  513. regalia, would

  514. you be sprawled

  515. out like this?

  516. Like digging

  517. breakfast out of

  518. your teeth?

  519. Or would you

  520. sit up straight?

  521. And of course

  522. they sit up

  523. straight because

  524. they think,

  525. well, if the

  526. king was here,

  527. I go, well,

  528. listen, is God

  529. bigger and

  530. stronger and

  531. greater and

  532. more glorious

  533. than the

  534. king?

  535. Of course.

  536. Just goes to

  537. show that,

  538. yes, on one

  539. hand, the

  540. Lord is close.

  541. He has made

  542. himself close,

  543. but let us

  544. not embrace

  545. this wonderful,

  546. beautiful gift

  547. and vision of

  548. the closeness

  549. of God at

  550. the expense

  551. of his

  552. gloriousness,

  553. that he

  554. truly is the

  555. king.

  556. So we must

  557. remember that

  558. when we come

  559. to worship,

  560. whether we

  561. feel his

  562. presence or

  563. not, he

  564. is here.

  565. We should

  566. not enter

  567. his presence

  568. carelessly.

  569. Having a

  570. reverent

  571. posture and

  572. attitude towards

  573. God is key.

  574. the Lord

  575. delights in

  576. such reverent

  577. worship because

  578. it honors him,

  579. because he is

  580. the transcendent

  581. Lord.

  582. And in doing

  583. so, we will

  584. learn to

  585. worship with

  586. integrity.

  587. And this

  588. brings us to

  589. our second

  590. point, that

  591. proper worship

  592. is a worship

  593. that is

  594. integral, that

  595. we ought to

  596. worship God

  597. with integrity.

  598. Look with me

  599. at verses 2 and

  600. 3.

  601. Be not rash

  602. with your

  603. mouth, nor

  604. let your

  605. heart be hasty

  606. to utter a

  607. word before

  608. God.

  609. For God is

  610. in heaven, and

  611. you are on

  612. earth.

  613. Therefore, let

  614. your words be

  615. few.

  616. For a dream

  617. comes with

  618. much business,

  619. and a fool's

  620. voice with

  621. many words.

  622. The imperative

  623. here is similar

  624. to verse 1,

  625. but it goes a

  626. bit further.

  627. The sage, he

  628. is urging us

  629. to see that the

  630. Lord is

  631. transcendent.

  632. We are not.

  633. He is in

  634. heaven.

  635. We are on

  636. earth.

  637. We are under

  638. the sun.

  639. He certainly

  640. is not under

  641. the sun.

  642. And we have

  643. touched this in

  644. past weeks.

  645. However, it's

  646. worth revisiting

  647. this idea of

  648. God's transcendence

  649. because often

  650. we are forgetful

  651. people.

  652. So, really

  653. briefly, God's

  654. transcendence

  655. reminds us that

  656. he has attributes

  657. that we do not

  658. possess.

  659. So, theologians,

  660. they'll look at

  661. God's attributes,

  662. what makes God

  663. God, and some

  664. of them we

  665. share with him.

  666. We are made in

  667. his image, so we

  668. have the capacity

  669. to love.

  670. Not like God, but

  671. still, we can

  672. love, we can

  673. show mercy.

  674. Again, not like

  675. God, but because

  676. we are made in

  677. his image, we

  678. can extend

  679. mercy.

  680. But there are

  681. other attributes

  682. that we do not

  683. share with God.

  684. God.

  685. We, unlike God,

  686. do not, we

  687. change.

  688. God does not

  689. change.

  690. Nor does he

  691. experience passions.

  692. He knows

  693. everything.

  694. He sees

  695. everything and is

  696. present everywhere.

  697. We do not.

  698. We certainly do

  699. not.

  700. He transcends

  701. both space and

  702. time, and as we

  703. discussed a couple

  704. of weeks ago, we

  705. are certainly bound

  706. by time.

  707. And we are

  708. limited by our

  709. location, by our

  710. lot in life.

  711. God is

  712. different than

  713. us.

  714. This is what the

  715. sage is getting

  716. at when he says,

  717. God is in

  718. heaven, and you

  719. are on the

  720. earth.

  721. Disregarding God's

  722. transcendence means

  723. treating him as

  724. just another person

  725. under the sun, and

  726. certainly he is not.

  727. In doing so, we

  728. engage in a form of

  729. atheism.

  730. Again, this isn't

  731. the modern kind of

  732. atheism that relies

  733. on a kind of

  734. Darwinian evolution

  735. to deny any

  736. deity.

  737. But a practical

  738. atheism that

  739. overlooks or

  740. dismisses that God

  741. is the highest

  742. authority and

  743. there rejects God's

  744. ultimate justice.

  745. It renders God

  746. powerless.

  747. Toothless.

  748. He has no real

  749. authority over our

  750. lives because he is

  751. not the final judge.

  752. In fact, we are in

  753. that circumstance.

  754. So, it's not an

  755. atheism that denies

  756. God's deity, but

  757. lessens his deity.

  758. Twice in the

  759. psalter, the

  760. psalmist, he will

  761. say that the

  762. fool says in his

  763. heart, there is no

  764. God.

  765. And what he is not

  766. again describing is

  767. this Darwinian, this

  768. proto-Darwinian

  769. atheist, but

  770. somebody who is a

  771. part of God's

  772. covenant people,

  773. that are part of the

  774. people of God, that

  775. are treating God as

  776. a lesser deity and

  777. putting themselves in

  778. the ultimate place,

  779. the ultimate throne.

  780. In doing so, in

  781. denying God's

  782. transcendence, we

  783. speak and act as if

  784. God doesn't truly

  785. exist.

  786. But whether or not

  787. we act or think that

  788. God truly doesn't

  789. exist, he does.

  790. God is not, again,

  791. limited like we are,

  792. and therefore he is

  793. not limited to whether

  794. or not we believe in

  795. him or functionally

  796. believe in him.

  797. Therefore, when we go

  798. through the motions

  799. when we come to

  800. church, when we are

  801. like what Derek

  802. Kidner says, the

  803. people that come to

  804. church, that love a

  805. good sing, but listen

  806. with half an ear, such

  807. words become empty

  808. and foolish and as

  809. unreal as the dreams

  810. that we have.

  811. Dreams are filled

  812. with meaningless

  813. events.

  814. So too are the

  815. words of a fool.

  816. The Bible calls this

  817. hypocrisy.

  818. Empty words, half a

  819. heart, a functional

  820. type of atheism.

  821. In Matthew 6, in

  822. the Sermon on the

  823. Mount, Jesus, he

  824. gives three examples

  825. of how religious

  826. hypocrisy shows

  827. itself.

  828. When we do

  829. charity, when we

  830. pray, and when we

  831. fast.

  832. All these actions

  833. become empty

  834. displays aimed at

  835. gaining the benefit

  836. of being a

  837. religious person, a

  838. moral person, an

  839. upright person,

  840. without truly

  841. committing to God

  842. as a transcendent

  843. one.

  844. Instead, we end up

  845. using the Lord's

  846. gifts as tools for

  847. our own benefit,

  848. rather than serving

  849. him with the things

  850. that he's given us.

  851. I'll give you an

  852. example.

  853. Just this past

  854. week, I'm on a

  855. group chat with

  856. some guys.

  857. One of the guys

  858. shares a medical

  859. situation.

  860. Guys are saying,

  861. yeah, we'll pray.

  862. And I said, have my

  863. prayers 100%.

  864. Something like that.

  865. It was just a quick

  866. text.

  867. I did not pray for

  868. him.

  869. It was like maybe

  870. 48 hours, and then

  871. I met with some of the

  872. guys a couple days

  873. after, and I didn't

  874. pray.

  875. But I sent the

  876. message there because

  877. I wanted to be the

  878. type of guy who says,

  879. hey, I'll pray for

  880. you.

  881. I care.

  882. Hey, I got your

  883. back.

  884. I'll pray for you.

  885. And what I ended up

  886. doing in this

  887. situation is using

  888. a religious

  889. language that

  890. should be

  891. integral, that

  892. should have

  893. integrity to it,

  894. as a means to

  895. just puff out my

  896. chest and to

  897. show myself as a

  898. morally upright

  899. person.

  900. Friends, pray for

  901. your pastor.

  902. Pray for yourselves,

  903. because this is

  904. something that's

  905. very easy to fall

  906. into.

  907. And I'll just say

  908. this.

  909. I want to be

  910. cautious here,

  911. because what I am

  912. not saying is that

  913. in the pursuit of

  914. being authentic and

  915. genuine and having

  916. a faith that is

  917. full of good,

  918. godly integrity,

  919. what I don't want

  920. to suggest is that

  921. we don't obey the

  922. Lord.

  923. The Lord commands

  924. us to pray for

  925. people.

  926. So what would be

  927. wrong would be for

  928. the next situation

  929. to come out for

  930. me to say,

  931. my thoughts are

  932. with you, or to

  933. maybe even not

  934. respond at all,

  935. but rather instead

  936. to say, I will

  937. pray for you, in

  938. fact I'm going to

  939. pray right now, and

  940. then pause whatever I'm

  941. doing to pray.

  942. pray.

  943. As with verse 1,

  944. the point isn't to

  945. never make a

  946. religious vow to

  947. the Lord, or to

  948. act religiously, but

  949. to do so with

  950. honesty and

  951. integrity.

  952. Again, verse 1,

  953. what does it say?

  954. To draw near to

  955. listen is better than

  956. to offer the

  957. sacrifice of fools.

  958. What God is saying

  959. is don't sacrifice.

  960. He's not saying,

  961. listen, never

  962. sacrifice to me.

  963. He is saying,

  964. don't bother

  965. sacrificing to me if

  966. your heart is not

  967. there.

  968. In the same way,

  969. he is saying,

  970. listen, make a

  971. vow, but don't

  972. bother making a

  973. vow, taking an

  974. oath, if you're

  975. going to do so with

  976. an empty heart, with

  977. a heart that's

  978. turned towards

  979. everything else

  980. except me.

  981. We must resist

  982. the tendency to

  983. treat God as if

  984. he exists only

  985. within our heart,

  986. as if we can

  987. turn on the God

  988. switch when we

  989. need him, turn it

  990. off when we are

  991. going about life.

  992. Instead, we need

  993. to embrace the

  994. reality that God

  995. has always existed

  996. and always exists,

  997. that he sees all,

  998. that he is involved

  999. in all.

  1000. He is the creator

  1001. and we are his

  1002. creation and

  1003. therefore,

  1004. we conform to

  1005. him, not the

  1006. other way around.

  1007. Our agenda, our

  1008. desires, our

  1009. motivations regarding

  1010. life and

  1011. spirituality, it

  1012. must be subordinate

  1013. to who God is

  1014. and what he has

  1015. ordained.

1016. God is not a tool

  1017. to make us look

  1018. better.

  1019. To worship God

  1020. with integrity is

  1021. to worship him on

  1022. his terms and not

  1023. ours.

  1024. And this challenges

  1025. this idea that

  1026. was really a very

  1027. popular thing a

  1028. generation ago.

  1029. where Christians,

  1030. well-meaning

  1031. Christians, would

  1032. say, I don't

  1033. have a religion,

  1034. I have a

  1035. relationship.

  1036. You cannot have

  1037. a personalized

  1038. Christianity.

  1039. Christianity is

  1040. very personal,

  1041. okay, it's very

  1042. personal, but it

  1043. cannot be

  1044. personalized, your

  1045. own version of it

  1046. that suits your

  1047. own needs at

  1048. times that you

  1049. feel like you are

  1050. able to be a

  1051. religious person.

  1052. And the reality

  1053. is this, you

  1054. cannot stay true

  1055. to both your

  1056. authentic self,

  1057. which may change

  1058. every few years,

  1059. and to the

  1060. authentic God who

  1061. was and is and

  1062. is to come.

  1063. The only way to

  1064. have an authentic

  1065. faith, a faith that

  1066. is full of integrity,

  1067. is to worship God

  1068. for who he is,

  1069. with hearts turned to

  1070. him, not based on

  1071. how we feel.

  1072. Yet, yet we do

  1073. not want to

  1074. worship the Lord

  1075. as robotic beings.

  1076. We can't force

  1077. ourselves to have

  1078. hearts turned

  1079. towards him.

  1080. We can't shut

  1081. off our emotions

  1082. and our feelings.

  1083. Sometimes we feel

  1084. crummy.

  1085. Sometimes we are

  1086. super distracted

  1087. with life.

  1088. We are whole

  1089. beings called to

  1090. worship with all

  1091. that God makes us,

  1092. and sometimes

  1093. parts of us are

  1094. turned away.

  1095. Therefore, we

  1096. must learn and

  1097. grow in our

  1098. worship with

  1099. sincerity and

  1100. honesty.

  1101. And this brings us

  1102. to our last

  1103. section.

  1104. Look with me at

  1105. verses 4 to 7.

  1106. When you vow a

  1107. vow to God, do

  1108. not delay paying

  1109. it, for he has

  1110. no pleasure in

  1111. fools.

  1112. That's a third

  1113. time fools have

  1114. been used in

  1115. this short

  1116. section.

  1117. Pay what you

  1118. vow.

  1119. Verse 5.

  1120. It is better

  1121. that you should

  1122. not vow than

  1123. you should vow

  1124. and not pay.

  1125. Let not your

  1126. mouth lead you

  1127. into sin, and

  1128. do not say before

  1129. the messenger that

  1130. it was a

  1131. mistake.

  1132. Why should God

  1133. be angry at

  1134. your voice and

  1135. destroy the work

  1136. of your hands?

  1137. For when dreams

  1138. increase and

  1139. words grow many,

  1140. there is vanity.

  1141. But God is the

  1142. one you must

  1143. fear.

  1144. the sage

  1145. continues to

  1146. build upon

  1147. verses 1 and

  1148. 3 by

  1149. instructing us

  1150. to be sincere

  1151. in and honest

  1152. in our worship.

  1153. Verse 4 to 7

  1154. describes a

  1155. religious person

  1156. taking a vow to

  1157. make a sacrifice

  1158. or to bring an

  1159. offering at the

  1160. temple.

  1161. If only God

  1162. would grant

  1163. their prayer or

  1164. appear in the

  1165. or so that

  1166. they may appear

  1167. religiously

  1168. upright.

  1169. However, when

  1170. the time comes

  1171. for them to pay

  1172. what they have

  1173. promised or to

  1174. give what they

  1175. have guaranteed,

  1176. they plead

  1177. ignorance.

  1178. I didn't know

  1179. that it was

  1180. going to cost

  1181. that much.

  1182. Or they delay

  1183. payment.

  1184. Yeah, I will

  1185. pay, but next

  1186. week, next

  1187. month, next

  1188. year.

  1189. The sage is

  1190. describing a

  1191. person who takes

  1192. for granted

  1193. the mercy of

  1194. God, presuming

  1195. that God is

  1196. available to

  1197. meet their

  1198. needs first and

  1199. foremost.

  1200. Again, we see

  1201. a faithless

  1202. religion.

  1203. This is grievous

  1204. in God's eyes.

  1205. It is a cause

  1206. for his judgment,

  1207. not mercy to be

  1208. extended.

  1209. We see this in

  1210. verse 6.

  1211. Why should God

  1212. be angry at your

  1213. voice and destroy

  1214. the work of your

  1215. hands?

  1216. There are many

  1217. instances,

  1218. especially in the

  1219. gospels of

  1220. Jesus taking

  1221. the religiously

  1222. pomp, the

  1223. faithless

  1224. religious leaders

  1225. to task on

  1226. this very thing,

  1227. on this very

  1228. issue, that they

  1229. worship God

  1230. without sincerity

  1231. or honesty.

  1232. Many different

  1233. examples.

  1234. One of the

  1235. examples I'll

  1236. give this

  1237. morning is from

  1238. Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  1239. And it's a

  1240. chilling section.

  1241. And it describes

  1242. exactly what we

  1243. are reading about.

  1244. But I'll give a

  1245. bit of a

  1246. background.

  1247. I won't actually

  1248. read it from

  1249. Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  1250. It's a short

  1251. 11, I think it's

  1252. 11 or 12

  1253. verses.

  1254. It's after

  1255. Pentecost.

  1256. The church is

  1257. growing by huge

  1258. amounts of

  1259. numbers.

  1260. And the

  1261. disciples are

  1262. leading the

  1263. church with

  1264. bravery and

  1265. courage and

  1266. their spirit

  1267. filled.

  1268. It's an

  1269. incredible time

  1270. in the church's

  1271. history.

  1272. People are

  1273. bringing tithes

  1274. and gifts and

  1275. offerings to

  1276. the disciples,

  1277. to the

  1278. apostles, and

  1279. they are

  1280. distributing them

  1281. equally.

  1282. And then this

  1283. couple comes.

  1284. And by the

  1285. way, the

  1286. giving of

  1287. gifts, it's

  1288. voluntary.

  1289. People can

  1290. give what

  1291. they feel

  1292. led to in

  1293. their heart.

  1294. There is no

  1295. religious compulsion.

  1296. It is an

  1297. act of

  1298. thanksgiving.

  1299. And then this

  1300. couple comes

  1301. by.

  1302. Ananias and

  1303. Sapphira.

  1304. We know

  1305. nothing about

  1306. them, only

  1307. that they

  1308. had a good

  1309. amount of

  1310. money.

  1311. And that

  1312. they sold a

  1313. portion of

  1314. their estate

  1315. and they

  1316. brought it to

  1317. the disciples.

  1318. And they

  1319. came separately.

  1320. First,

  1321. Ananias, he

  1322. came, he

  1323. gave the

  1324. lot of

  1325. money and

  1326. he said,

  1327. this is

  1328. all of our

  1329. estate.

  1330. And Peter,

  1331. knowing by

  1332. the Holy Spirit

  1333. that they were

  1334. lying, that he

  1335. was lying, he

  1336. gave him a

  1337. chance and he

  1338. doubled down and

  1339. he was struck

  1340. down dead.

  1341. The same

  1342. thing happened

  1343. to his

  1344. wife,

  1345. Sapphira.

  1346. It is a

  1347. very chilling

  1348. story, especially

  1349. if we

  1350. consider that

  1351. the New

  1352. Testament is

  1353. all about

  1354. grace.

  1355. Judgment is

  1356. marbled all

  1357. throughout the

  1358. New Testament

  1359. as well.

  1360. But it

  1361. highlights for

  1362. us that

  1363. making public

  1364. vows and

  1365. not going

  1366. through with

  1367. them,

  1368. declaring to

  1369. God and

  1370. to the

  1371. people around

  1372. us that

  1373. we are so

  1374. morally upright

  1375. and that we

  1376. are religiously

  1377. astute.

  1378. When our

  1379. hearts are

  1380. turned away

  1381. from God,

  1382. when we are

  1383. bankrupt inside,

  1384. it is a

  1385. very grievous

  1386. thing to the

  1387. Lord.

  1388. It is

  1389. something that

  1390. he does not

  1391. take lightly.

  1392. But making

  1393. public vows is

  1394. quite uncommon

  1395. for us.

  1396. We certainly

  1397. make private

  1398. vows to the

  1399. Lord.

  1400. We expect

  1401. him to

  1402. deliver if

  1403. we do the

  1404. religious thing.

  1405. But God's

  1406. economy isn't a

  1407. pay-to-play

  1408. economy.

  1409. He doesn't

  1410. promise us

  1411. health and

  1412. strength,

  1413. well-formed

  1414. children or

  1415. children,

  1416. lots of

  1417. money, a

  1418. spouse, a

  1419. job, or

  1420. anything else

  1421. if we would

  1422. only spend

  1423. 30 minutes

  1424. in the

  1425. morning with

  1426. him in

  1427. prayer.

  1428. If only we

  1429. would read

  1430. through our

  1431. Bibles once

  1432. a year,

  1433. straight through.

  1434. If only we

  1435. never missed a

  1436. Sunday.

  1437. If only we

  1438. made sure

  1439. that we

  1440. gave in

  1441. the tithing

  1442. basket at

  1443. the back of

  1444. the church.

  1445. If only we

  1446. would do all

  1447. the religious

  1448. things.

  1449. No, instead

  1450. God, he

  1451. wants, again,

  1452. our hearts

  1453. turned to

  1454. him so

  1455. that as we

  1456. worship, we

  1457. do so

  1458. sincerely and

  1459. honestly, knowing

  1460. that all good

  1461. gifts come from

  1462. him and that a

  1463. life of devotion

  1464. to the Lord

  1465. isn't this

  1466. inferior life, but

  1467. actually a

  1468. superior way to

  1469. live.

  1470. That with

  1471. sincere and

  1472. honest hearts, we

  1473. can come to

  1474. him and say,

  1475. listen, Lord, I

  1476. am trying my

  1477. best.

  1478. My heart is

  1479. divided.

  1480. Please help me.

  1481. I believe, but

  1482. help my unbelief.

  1483. faith.

  1484. It is a

  1485. religion that

  1486. is fueled by

  1487. faith.

  1488. See, the

  1489. faith that the

  1490. Lord values is

  1491. an honest and

  1492. sincere faith.

  1493. It is about

  1494. God's own

  1495. glory and not

  1496. our own.

  1497. And we

  1498. cannot use this

  1499. transcendent God

  1500. and this

  1501. beautiful faith

  1502. that he has

  1503. given us to

  1504. satisfy our

  1505. own often

  1506. selfish desires

  1507. as men and

  1508. women who live

  1509. under the sun.

  1510. So the big

  1511. question is,

  1512. what happens

  1513. when we are

  1514. constantly

  1515. tripping up?

  1516. When we are

  1517. constantly finding

  1518. ourselves with

  1519. insincere hearts,

  1520. with dishonest

  1521. motives, with

  1522. hearts that don't

  1523. really revere God,

  1524. when we aren't

  1525. that integral in

  1526. our faith?

  1527. What do we do?

  1528. do we do?

  1529. There's this

  1530. beautiful gift that

  1531. God has given

  1532. us.

  1533. And it's

  1534. something that we

  1535. practice every

  1536. Sunday and it's

  1537. something that you

  1538. ought to practice

  1539. every day, maybe

  1540. multiple times a

  1541. day.

  1542. It's called

  1543. repentance.

  1544. Okay?

  1545. And God

  1546. delights in it.

  1547. He delights in

  1548. it.

  1549. As I ask the

  1550. Lord for

  1551. forgiveness, for

  1552. using his

  1553. things to

  1554. bolster my

  1555. own kind of

  1556. moral superiority

  1557. this past week,

  1558. he doesn't say

  1559. to me,

  1560. well, too

  1561. bad, you

  1562. have slighted

  1563. me, now

  1564. my turn to

  1565. slight you.

  1566. He delights in

  1567. the repentance.

  1568. He delights in

  1569. us turning our

  1570. gaze back to

  1571. him.

  1572. But this is

  1573. our lot as

  1574. people living

  1575. under the sun.

  1576. We are

  1577. constantly bound

  1578. to live

  1579. inauthentically

  1580. in this

  1581. faith.

  1582. So the only

  1583. proper response

  1584. is the end of

  1585. verse 7.

  1586. Well, read all

  1587. of verse 7.

  1588. For when dreams

  1589. increase and

  1590. words grow many,

  1591. there is vanity.

  1592. But God is

  1593. the only one,

  1594. is the one you

  1595. must fear.

  1596. But God is the

  1597. one you must

  1598. fear.

  1599. What we are

  1600. truly after is

  1601. not a God

  1602. confined to

  1603. this life

  1604. under the sun,

  1605. but rather to

  1606. join him as we

  1607. transcend this

  1608. mortal life.

  1609. The problem is

  1610. we cannot

  1611. transcend this

  1612. mortal life.

  1613. Our hearts

  1614. genuinely desire

  1615. to be in the

  1616. presence of God

  1617. forever, but my

  1618. goodness, how do

  1619. we get there?

  1620. The promise of

  1621. the church is

  1622. that it should be

  1623. the very place

  1624. where the

  1625. separation between

  1626. heaven and earth

  1627. is at its

  1628. thinnest.

  1629. For as we

  1630. gather as God's

  1631. people, the

  1632. triune God

  1633. himself inhabits

  1634. our praises.

  1635. And this is an

  1636. act of his

  1637. kindness and

  1638. mercy, where he

  1639. condescends to

  1640. us.

  1641. We don't ascend to

  1642. him, for we

  1643. can't.

  1644. But he

  1645. condescends to

  1646. us, and he

  1647. inhabits our

  1648. praises.

  1649. This is why at

  1650. communion, every

  1651. single Sunday I

  1652. ask, is the

  1653. Father with us?

  1654. And you respond,

  1655. he is.

  1656. He is.

  1657. He is the

  1658. Son with us.

  1659. He is.

  1660. Is the Holy

  1661. Spirit here?

  1662. You respond, he

  1663. is.

  1664. We are affirming

  1665. a reality that is

  1666. just as real as

  1667. the coffee that you

  1668. will drink after the

  1669. service and the

  1670. hands that you

  1671. will shake.

  1672. And friends, this

1673. is an act of God's

  1674. kindness and

  1675. goodness towards

  1676. us who are under

  1677. the sun, who

  1678. live a very

  1679. hypocritical faith.

  1680. what an

  1681. incredible gift,

  1682. and it's a gift

  1683. that came at

  1684. quite the cost.

  1685. For the price of

  1686. our entry into

  1687. the presence of

  1688. God is the very

  1689. precious blood that

  1690. Christ Jesus shed on

  1691. the pavement where

  1692. he was scourged, on

  1693. the cross that he

  1694. carried, and on

  1695. the dirt underneath

  1696. the cross where he

  1697. hung.

  1698. Nothing less,

  1699. nothing less

  1700. grants you access

  1701. to his presence.

  1702. not upping your

  1703. sincerity, although

  1704. it's very important,

  1705. not upping your

  1706. reverence, although

  1707. it's very important,

  1708. not trying to live

  1709. with more integrity,

  1710. very important.

  1711. That doesn't get you

  1712. entry into God's

  1713. presence.

  1714. But the spilled

1715. blood of the Lamb is

  1716. the only thing.

  1717. You see, the idea

  1718. that we could use

  1719. God's gift to

  1720. benefit ourselves

  1721. is so foolish

  1722. on so many

  1723. levels,

  1724. because we are

  1725. trying to get

  1726. something that we

  1727. already have,

  1728. but in such a

  1729. way that is far

  1730. exceeding anything

  1731. that we could

  1732. somehow get by

  1733. by manipulating

  1734. God and his

  1735. faith that he

  1736. has given us.

  1737. We want

  1738. belonging.

  1739. Again, I'll use

  1740. myself as an

  1741. example.

  1742. I wanted

  1743. belonging to

  1744. be looked at in

  1745. a certain way,

  1746. but God has

  1747. already given me a

  1748. place in his

  1749. presence that I

  1750. belong to him

  1751. forever.

  1752. We want to seem

  1753. morally upright,

  1754. and yet constantly

  1755. we are riddled

  1756. with sin,

  1757. disobedience,

  1758. and yet,

  1759. because of

  1760. Christ and the

  1761. righteousness he

  1762. has given us,

  1763. we are as white

  1764. as snow in his

  1765. very presence.

  1766. Whatever we try

  1767. to do here on

  1768. earth to ascend

  1769. to heaven,

  1770. it will utterly

  1771. fail.

  1772. He has made a

  1773. way.

  1774. Let us not be

  1775. fools to try to

  1776. disregard what he

  1777. has already done

  1778. and climb some

  1779. ladder that only

  1780. goes so high.

  1781. So friends, let us

  1782. approach the Lord

  1783. in worship with

  1784. reverence,

  1785. integrity,

  1786. sincerity, and

  1787. honesty.

  1788. He deserves our

  1789. very best because he

  1790. is worthy of our

  1791. very best.

  1792. In Christ, the

  1793. triune God has

  1794. shown his love for

  1795. us while we were

  1796. still yet sinners.

  1797. What does he do?

  1798. He dies for us,

  1799. initiating our

  1800. salvation, descending

1801. to us so that we

  1802. may ascend to him

  1803. through him.

  1804. Amen.

  1805. Heavenly Father, we

  1806. thank you for the

  1807. gift of salvation.

  1808. And Lord, we

  1809. confess and ask for

  1810. your forgiveness for

  1811. trying to find

  1812. salvation in our

  1813. own works, in our

  1814. own religious

  1815. strivings.

  1816. And in doing so,

1817. we make a mockery of

  1818. what your son has

  1819. done on the cross

  1820. of Calvary.

1821. And it is not an

  1822. indifferent thing to

  1823. you.

  1824. It is a grievous

  1825. thing to you.

  1826. And it is evil.

  1827. Lord, we ask for

  1828. your forgiveness.

1829. Lord, help us to be

  1830. honest about who we

  1831. are.

  1832. Help us to have

  1833. eyes that open.

1834. And as it says in

  1835. verse 1, that we

  1836. would be people that

  1837. listen well.

  1838. We can all listen

  1839. well.

1840. We do not need to

  1841. have a remarkable

  1842. IQ to listen well.

1843. We do not need to

  1844. come from a fantastic

  1845. family to listen

  1846. well.

  1847. By virtue of us

  1848. hearing what you

1849. would have to say to

  1850. us this morning, we

  1851. can listen well if

  1852. you would but help

  1853. us.

1854. So Lord, help us to

1855. have ears to hear and

  1856. to be people that

  1857. don't just hear your

  1858. word and forget it,

  1859. but rather be doers

  1860. of your word.

  1861. And Lord, help us

  1862. more than all of

1863. that to value and to

  1864. cherish and to hold

1865. up and to esteem the

  1866. cross of Jesus Christ

  1867. above all.

1868. We pray this in his

  1869. name.

  1870. Amen.

  1871. Amen.

  1872. Amen.
