  1. The Holy Gospel is found in the Gospel of Matthew, beginning chapter 6 at the 25th verse.

  2. Are you not of more value than they?

  3. And which of you, by being anxious, can add a single hour to his life?

  4. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  5. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow.

  6. They neither toil nor spin.

  7. Yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

  8. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  9. will he not much more clothe you?

  10. O you of little faith, therefore do not be anxious, saying,

  11. What shall we eat, or what shall we drink, or what shall we wear?

  12. For the Gentiles seek after these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

  13. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,

  14. and all these things will be added to you.

  15. Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow,

  16. for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.

  17. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

  18. This is the Gospel of Christ.

  19. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

  20. So with having a young baby, we have an eight-month-old,

  21. I find we find ourselves in the evenings, through the newborn phase,

  22. we watch a lot of Netflix to get by in the moments where he's sleeping.

  23. And we ended up watching this one documentary on Netflix a couple months ago.

  24. And I don't remember the guy's name, who it was about.

  25. My phone is too old to actually look things up now,

  26. so I couldn't look it up his name yesterday.

  27. But this documentary was about this guy who's trying to reverse aging.

  28. And he's doing it in a way where he has this really intense, regimented routine through his days.

  29. He works out constantly.

  30. He has this exercising down to a precise science.

  31. He has this, you call it the perfect diet.

  32. He takes tons of vitamins.

  33. And he has this perfect skin treatment.

  34. And what he's doing is he says he's trying to de-age his organs, his skin,

  35. his life in the hopes that he can live longer.

  36. And he claims it's for science.

  37. He spends about a million dollars a year on doing this whole thing for himself.

  38. He says it's for science.

  39. But I think it's safe to say he's actually afraid of dying.

  40. He's probably afraid of aging.

  41. That's probably if you get to the heart of it.

  42. If he was completely honest with himself and to those he speaks to,

  43. he's most likely, he's afraid of aging, as we all are in some sense.

  44. Yes.

  45. And I bring up this illustration about this documentary

  46. because the text we're looking at today is the text I just read, the Gospel of Matthew.

  47. Jesus is talking to his disciples, smack dab in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount.

  48. And we'll talk about the Sermon on the Mount in a bit.

  49. But Jesus is talking to his disciples and those who are around him who may be there

  50. and they catch ear of the Sermon on the Mount.

  51. He's talking to them because worrying or being anxious is a very common human emotion.

  52. We all do it.

  53. We all do it.

  54. We can't deny it.

  55. We worry about things.

  56. We all have different worries in our lives.

  57. And Jesus is getting at this certain emotion that when you worry too much,

  58. when it becomes crippling, when your entire focus of your life is being anxious

  59. and worrying about certain things, he's speaking directly to that.

  60. Because worrying about some things is fine.

  61. But when it becomes all-consuming, it becomes a problem.

  62. And that's what he's getting at here.

  63. That's what he's going after.

  64. So if you haven't already, turn to Matthew 6, verses 25 to 34.

    Matthew 6:25–34

  65. And we're going to look at this.

  66. And this is one of those texts where, as someone who preaches regularly,

  67. you get to come to it and your sermon is almost laid out for you already.

  68. It has your three points already.

  69. And we're going to look at it this way.

  70. There's the problem, the examples, and the solution.

  71. So we're going to begin with point one.

  72. It's the problem.

  73. So we're going to start in verse 24.

  74. This is Jesus talking to his disciples.

  75. No one can serve two masters.

  76. For either he will hate the one and love the other,

  77. or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  78. You cannot serve God and money.

  79. Other translations will have money as possessions.

  80. The Greek word for money here is mammon.

  81. And that means possessions.

  82. Anything you hold dearly, you possess it.

  83. That's what it's talking about.

  84. That's what the word means.

  85. And he continues.

  86. Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you'll eat or what you'll drink, nor about your body, what you will put on.

  87. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?

  88. So here we see the problem.

  89. We see that Jesus gives this way of living.

  90. He says to do this.

  91. And it sounds like a good thing to do.

  92. But if we're honest, the problem is we all do it.

  93. We all end up worrying about things or being anxious about things that cripple us.

  94. We all have different worries.

  95. It could be money.

  96. It could be your possessions.

  97. It could be addictions.

  98. It could be worrying about life, about as you age, getting older, coming closer to the day you'll die.

  99. It could be bitterness.

  100. You could be worrying about the bitterness you hold on.

  101. It could be getting justice.

  102. It could be your self-image, beauty, family.

  103. There's anything.

  104. The list can go on and on.

  105. And we, as disciples of Jesus, need to reflect on what these things in our lives are that we hold so dearly,

  106. but they actually end up crippling us because we worry about them constantly.

  107. Before I pursued ministry, before 2017, I was really into rock climbing, like really into it.

  108. I was going to pursue becoming a professional rock climber.

  109. And I would use people to get to certain areas that I needed to climb certain routes to get better at climbing.

  110. And I would become, if I didn't get to climb a certain amount in the week, I would become grumpy.

  111. I'd become upset.

  112. I would ruin my day if I didn't perform well while I was rock climbing.

  113. I had this one drive, and I would worry constantly about it.

  114. See, if we all reflect on these things, there's things in our lives we constantly worry about.

  115. We have to be honest with ourselves.

  116. So where do we go from here?

  117. If this is the problem that Jesus presents us, that we are to live a certain way, not worrying about certain things,

  118. how do we go from here?

  119. Well, in order to understand this, we have to look at a whole of what Jesus is talking about here,

  120. what the Gospel of Matthew is talking about.

  121. We're right in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount.

  122. Jesus is sitting down with his disciples on a hill here, and he's talking to them, giving them life principles.

  123. The Sermon on the Mount can be called the New Testament law, because in the Old Testament there's a law as well.

  124. But it's not about fulfilling, hitting every, ticking every box, getting it all perfectly right.

  125. It's about something else, and it's about the heart behind of doing these things that Jesus is laying out here.

  126. And it's so easy to get this wrong.

  127. You read the Old Testament, you can see the Israelites getting it all wrong through the Old Testament.

  128. The Sermon on the Mount is the new law.

  129. And if we look at chapter 6, before coming up to the text we're looking at here,

  130. in the rest of chapter 6, Jesus talks about giving to the needy,

  131. but doing it in a way that you won't be praised.

  132. He talks about doing prayer, and he gives the Lord's Prayer here, as we'll say later in the service.

  133. But he says don't do it in a way that you want to be heard about your praying.

  134. And he also says to forgive.

  135. He talks about unforgiveness.

  136. And then he talks about fasting.

  137. And the thing that he talks about here is that you should not fast in order to be seen.

  138. You should be only seen by your Heavenly Father.

  139. And then he talks about laying up your treasures, which is self-sufficiency.

  140. See, when worrying becomes consuming, or when you end up serving these things,

  141. it becomes idolatry, and that's what Jesus is getting at here.

  142. The Sermon on the Mount is pointing to these things.

  143. So let's look at what Jesus says next.

  144. The examples.

  145. Verse 26.

  146. Look at the birds of the air.

  147. They neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,

  148. and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them.

  149. Are you not of more value than they?

  150. See, Jesus uses simple illustrations here.

  151. That's what's so good about the Gospels.

  152. There's these simple illustrations to explain deep life things.

  153. So what is he talking about?

  154. Is he talking about, I don't have to work?

  155. That God will just provide everything for me?

  156. No.

  157. God is not talking about we can just sit back.

  158. See, birds, in this illustration,

  159. it says that God provides for them.

  160. But it doesn't say that he just gives them the food.

  161. The birds still have to go and search out the food.

  162. They still have to go and find it, find their nests, make their nests.

  163. So what the principle is here is that Jesus is laying out to his disciples,

  164. you still need the work.

  165. But you need to do it in a sense where you bring an honor to God.

  166. Or you might ask, does this mean I have to work long hours?

  167. No.

  168. The birds only gather what they need in that moment.

  169. Jesus is talking about the heart behind the work.

  170. Are you worrying constantly about the work?

  171. Is it consuming you?

  172. That's what he's getting at.

  173. And you might think, well, this is easy for us to talk about,

  174. living in Western society.

  175. We live in excess.

  176. But what about the Christians around the world who live in poverty,

  177. who live in constant want of food?

  178. How can we talk so freely about this, but then forget about them?

  179. It's a good point to bring up,

  180. because it's something that we should reflect on.

  181. It shows us we need to give more to good organizations

  182. that help the poor, that help those in need around the world.

  183. And it gives us a good illustration about how we need to help those in need.

  184. But we also need to remember,

  185. Jesus is speaking to those who live in poverty.

  186. His disciples are poor fishermen who are following him.

  187. They would every day not know where their food would be coming from.

  188. So is this cruel for Jesus to say to them?

  189. Jesus knows that they need food.

  190. And he's not saying to sit back and relax.

  191. He's saying, what is your heart in this pursuit?

  192. Are you doing it honestly?

  193. Are you doing it for God's glory or for your glory?

  194. And then he ends it in this section.

  195. Are you not of more value?

  196. In Psalm 139, the psalmist is talking about that he is made,

  197. God knitted him together.

  198. He is made fearfully and wonderfully.

  199. That God values humans so much.

  200. They're made in his image.

  201. And in the next verse we see,

  202. And which of you, in verse 27,

  203. And which of you, by being anxious,

  204. can add a single hour to his span of life?

  205. Here this brings us back to the illustration at the beginning

  206. of the documentary of the man who's obsessed with trying to de-age.

  207. See, we should care for our bodies.

  208. We should use modern medicine.

  209. We should hope for a long life.

  210. But we shouldn't let it control us.

  211. We shouldn't consume us, the worry, the anxiety.

  212. See, a hundred years from now,

  213. everyone in this room will be dead unless Jesus returns.

  214. And then another hundred years from then,

  215. no one will be remembered.

  216. My mother-in-law is gathering the family tree stuff

  217. from all the different families and gathering together.

  218. And it has me thinking, like, I don't know anything about my family.

  219. I don't remember anyone in my family.

  220. I don't know anything.

  221. See, this brings us to the principle that

  222. in life,

  223. the things we do in life

  224. most likely won't be remembered.

  225. But our Heavenly Father will remember them.

  226. So Jesus uses another illustration.

  227. In verse 28, he says this,

  228. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  229. Consider the lilies of the field,

  230. how they grow.

  231. They neither toil nor spin.

  232. Yet I tell you,

  233. even Solomon in all his glory

  234. was not arrayed like one of these.

  235. But if God so clothes the grass,

  236. the field,

  237. which today is alive

  238. and tomorrow is thrown into the oven,

  239. will he not much more clothe you,

  240. O you of little faith?

  241. Therefore,

  242. do not be anxious,

  243. saying,

  244. what shall we eat

  245. or what shall we drink

  246. or what shall we wear?

  247. See, Jesus now

  248. goes down again,

  249. even harder on the illustration.

  250. He uses the grass of the area.

  251. See, God has created the world

  252. and he has made beautiful things

  253. in this world.

  254. He created

  255. very beautiful

  256. scenes of nature.

  257. And Jesus here

  258. is talking about

  259. in their area,

  260. there's this grass that grows,

  261. that flowers,

  262. and he creates a beautiful scene.

  263. But then they use it

  264. for their ovens

  265. to cook with.

  266. So God has created

  267. these beautiful things

  268. in life,

  269. but he's given it

  270. to humanity to use

  271. for their betterment,

  272. for their good.

  273. See, the whole point

  274. of the Sermon on the Mount,

  275. and this section as well,

  276. of it,

  277. is that

  278. what is the heart behind it?

  279. What is the disciple's heart?

  280. That's the whole point

  281. of the Sermon on the Mount.

  282. This is what Jesus

  283. is getting at.

  284. What is it?

  285. What is your heart

  286. behind everything you do?

  287. Is it,

  288. are you worrying

  289. to pursue

  290. to better yourself?

  291. Or are you worrying

  292. about does it bring

  293. God glory?

  294. Are you doing it

  295. to bring God glory?

  296. And then Jesus,

  297. after this section,

  298. presents the solution.

  299. He gives the solution.

  300. And it sounds

  301. a lot easier

  302. than it actually is.

  303. Verses 32 to 33.

  304. He says this,

  305. For the Gentiles

  306. seek after these things,

  307. and your heavenly Father

  308. knows that you need them all.

  309. But seek first

  310. the kingdom of God

  311. and his righteousness,

  312. and all these things

  313. will be added to you.

  314. See,

  315. when he says Gentile,

  316. what he's talking about

  317. is a non-Israelite

  318. in that time.

  319. But for us,

  320. we can say a non-Christian.

  321. Someone who doesn't believe

  322. in Christianity

  323. would be considered

  324. a Gentile in our time.

  325. An unbeliever.

  326. So Jesus is getting

  327. at something here.

  328. Through all these examples,

  329. through all the things,

  330. those who believe in God

  331. and those who don't

  332. believe in God,

  333. everyone has to work.

  334. Everyone needs to provide

  335. for their family

  336. in some respect.

  337. Everyone needs to

  338. clothe themselves.

  339. But those who are

  340. disciples of Jesus,

  341. there should be

  342. a noticeable difference.

  343. There should be

  344. something deeper

  345. in what they do

  346. every day.

  347. What do you live

  348. for?

  349. What do you hope

  350. for in life and death?

  351. A disciple of Jesus

  352. should be noticeably

  353. different in regards

  354. to this.

  355. They should not

  356. be consumed

  357. by anything

  358. other than living

  359. for the glory of God.

  360. We are to work.

  361. We are to work

  362. hard at the jobs

  363. we've been given.

  364. Whether that's being

  365. a parent at home

  366. with your child

  367. or those who go

  368. to work.

  369. It's what we are

  370. supposed to do

  371. to do it diligently,

  372. heartily,

  373. but we should do it

  374. for the glory of God,

  375. not for our own

  376. self-image,

  377. not for the things

  378. that bring us,

  379. not for the things

  380. that we get

  381. anxious about.

  382. We should give that

  383. to the Lord.

  384. So how is this done?

  385. Well, in verse 33,

  386. he gives the answer,

  387. but seek first

  388. the kingdom of God

  389. and his righteousness

  390. and all these things

  391. will be added to you.

  392. Well, it sounds

  393. a lot easier

  394. than actually doing it.

  395. How do you do that?

  396. How do you seek first

  397. the kingdom of God?

  398. Well, Paul,

  399. the Apostle Paul

  400. in Philippians,

  401. as he's in jail,

  402. facing trial,

  403. not knowing if he's

  404. going to live or die,

  405. he talks about this

  406. and he says this

  407. in chapter 4,

  408. verses 11 onwards.

  409. Not that I am speaking

  410. of being in need,

  411. for I have learned

  412. in whatever situation

  413. I am to be content.

  414. I know how to be brought low

  415. and I know how to abound.

  416. In any and every circumstance,

  417. I have learned

  418. the secret of facing plenty

  419. and hunger,

  420. abundance, and need.

  421. I can do all things

  422. through him

  423. who strengthens me.

  424. That's a great verse

  425. to remember.

  426. A great section

  427. of Philippians.

  428. Because it's not us

  429. who can do it,

  430. who can bring us strength.

  431. It's Christ.

  432. It's the Holy Spirit

  433. working within us.

  434. See, the beauty

  435. of the Gospel,

  436. of the Bible,

  437. is that it points us

  438. to something else.

  439. It points us

  440. to something

  441. that's not within ourselves.

  442. It points us

  443. to a God

  444. who loves us

  445. so deeply.

  446. That's the beauty

  447. of the Gospel.

  448. On our own,

  449. we'll be overwhelmed

  450. with life.

  451. We'll never be able

  452. to let go

  453. of the bitterness

  454. we hold on to

  455. so dearly

  456. if you've been wronged.

  457. You'll never be able

  458. to get the justice

  459. you want.

  460. We will be constantly

  461. concerned by our

  462. daily needs.

  463. We'll find no comfort

  464. in things

  465. of this world.

  466. Nothing will ever

  467. sustain us

  468. or satisfy us

  469. until we rest

  470. fully

  471. in Christ.

  472. when we seek

  473. the kingdom

  474. and his righteousness.

  475. And what that means

  476. is just

  477. when we point

  478. our minds,

  479. our hearts,

  480. everything

  481. towards God.

  482. When we ask God

  483. to come to our lives

  484. and help us

  485. in our weakness.

  486. See, the Gospel story

  487. is simple.

  488. It's a simple message.

  489. It's the message

  490. of good hope.

  491. It's good news.

  492. And what this

  493. good news is

  494. is that God

  495. sent his son

  496. into the world

  497. because humanity

  498. could not do anything

  499. to become right

  500. with God.

  501. That Jesus came

  502. to the world,

  503. lived a perfect life,

  504. went to the cross

  505. for our sins

  506. that we committed

  507. and then rose again

  508. from the dead.

  509. It's a simple message

  510. but it's a great

  511. profound message,

  512. a great treasure

  513. to unpack.

  514. That Jesus

  515. faced everything

  516. so we wouldn't

  517. have to.

  518. And it's the only

  519. way that we could

  520. face verse 24

  521. confidently.

  522. Or verse 34

  523. when it says,

  524. therefore,

  525. do not be anxious

  526. about tomorrow

  527. for tomorrow

  528. will be anxious

  529. for itself.

  530. Sufficient

  531. for the day

  532. is its own trouble.

  533. See, if we don't

  534. have Christ

  535. in our lives,

  536. if we don't have

  537. the cross

  538. in our lives,

  539. we will never

  540. be able to face

  541. tomorrow confidently

  542. because we don't

  543. know what tomorrow

  544. will bring.

  545. Tomorrow will bring

  546. different crosses

  547. for each and any

  548. of us here.

  549. It might be a great

  550. day.

  551. It might be a horrible

  552. day.

  553. We have no idea.

  554. But we can do it

  555. confidently

  556. if we have Jesus

  557. in our lives,

  558. if we are able

  559. to cling to him

  560. and not cling

  561. to the things

  562. of this world

  563. because God provides.

  564. He's the creator

  565. of everything

  566. as Jesus lays

  567. out here.

  568. God cares

  569. about every single

  570. thing that you go

  571. through in this life.

  572. We have Jesus

  573. to hold on to

  574. and it's only

  575. through faith

  576. in Jesus

  577. that we can do

  578. this.

  579. We have Jesus

  580. We have Jesus

  581. to do this.
