  1. So a bit of a story before we jump into God's word.

  2. Wednesday, April 17th, 2014, at 11am,

  3. the Iron Lady, the Right Honourable Baroness Margaret Thatcher of Kestevin

  4. ! was laid to rest at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

  5. Her funeral was a state funeral attended by heads of state the world over, royalty and dignitaries.

  6. It had all the pomp and ceremony and to the delight of a minister,

  7. it was full of scripture, hymns and prayers.

  8. For us this morning, I'm not going to do a deep dive into a funeral that happened 11 plus years ago,

  9. almost 12 years ago, but for us this morning, what is of particular note is the recessional hymn.

  10. When the coffin was taken out of St. Paul's, the Nunc Dimittis was sung.

  11. It was put to music and sung.

  12. If the Nunc Dimittis is unfamiliar to you, no problem.

  13. It's the Song of Simeon.

  14. In fact, it is the song we'll be looking at this morning, starting in verse 29 and going to verse 32.

  15. It is also the song that is sung or prayed at the end of evening prayer every single day in the Book of Common Prayer.

  16. The Book of Common Prayer is scripture put to prayers that it's really part of our tradition in the Anglican world.

  17. The words are fitting for the bookend of one's day and especially of one's life,

  18. as one rests satisfied with a job well done.

  19. So agree with her politics or not, I don't bring her up to get political, agree with her politics or not,

  20. Lady Thatcher accomplished a great deal in office and in life in general.

  21. She came from humble beginnings.

  22. She led the United Kingdom through turbulent times, including the Cold War.

  23. She accomplished much.

  24. And I would think that at the end of her life, she had a degree of satisfaction for what she did.

  25. She had a very, very rich and full public life.

  26. However, for the Lady Thatcher and for us this morning,

  27. if we were given some quiet, which is a bit of a hot commodity for some of us with young kids,

  28. if we were given some quiet to think about life and the things that truly matter

  29. and we felt comfortable with sharing from our heart of hearts,

  30. what would we describe as a life that is truly full, a life of complete satisfaction?

  31. I think it's an important question for us to consider, regardless of where we are at in life.

  32. If you are visiting or new, we've been asking some big questions in light of these four songs for the Savior

  33. in Luke's early narrative in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 1 and 2.

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  34. And we come finally to the Nunc Timidus, which is just to say Latin for,

  35. now let your servant depart in peace, which is the opening line in the song.

  36. This prayer, this song of Simeon, has been in use in the church for at least since the 4th century.

  37. It's very ancient, included in the daily prayers of God's people.

  38. And as such, it has deeply shaped generations of Christians to take stock of their life,

  39. whenever it would end, at the end of each day, in light of eternity.

  40. And it helps us to ask this question.

  41. If my life were to end, would I depart in peace?

  42. If my life were to end, would I depart in peace?

  43. A profound question, especially in our day.

  44. You know, we have a very interesting culture here in the West, and in Canada in particular.

  45. On one hand, when we're considering death, on one hand, death is tucked away.

  46. It is unseen.

  47. We live in a very kind of sanitized time.

  48. We are not acquainted with death.

  49. And yet, there's a bizarre obsession with the experience of death as we are eager to read or watch accounts of people

  50. undergoing health treatments or end-of-life care, or to follow people as they post or vlog about their grief or loss.

  51. It's a really interesting, I don't know if you want to call it a confusion, but maybe a lack of clarity around what death is and how we should live in light of it.

  52. So, how should we prepare for the end?

  53. What must we do to live a life of true satisfaction?

  54. How can we, like Simeon, declare,

  55. Now, let us, thou, thy servant, depart in peace?

  56. As we consider some of these questions, let's turn our attention to the final song for the Savior.

  57. And we're going to look at two things from the text.

  58. First, we're going to look at the strength of faith.

  59. And second, the satisfaction of peace.

  60. A bit of a background just to orient us with the narrative before we jump into these two points.

  61. Mary has had the baby Jesus.

  62. And as per Jewish custom, after about 40 days, she is to present herself at the temple to be cleansed from ritual impurity.

  63. Now, I'm not going to get into this at length.

  64. Only just to say that Mary is going to the temple not because she has sinned, necessarily,

  65. but because the law of Moses says that she has to offer sacrifice for her ritual impurity.

  66. Now, not only are they at the temple making the trip from Nazareth to the temple in Jerusalem for that purpose,

  67. but also Jesus being the firstborn out of Mary is, again, according to the scriptures, he has to be redeemed.

  68. I won't get into that.

  69. Only just to point out that Mary and Joseph, although they are very poor,

  70. and we know they're poor because the sacrifice that they alter is not a lamb, but two doves,

  71. which is like the very minimum for poor people to offer in the temple,

  72. that they are devout people, that they are seeking to follow the law as the Lord has commanded.

  73. So, with that as a background, we're going to look at the story and look at our first point,

  74. the strength of faith.

  75. So, turn with me, verses 25, and we'll read 25, 26, and 27.

  76. Verse 25.

  77. Now, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon,

  78. and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel,

  79. and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

  80. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit

  81. that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

  82. Christ is just the Greek term for the Hebrew word of Messiah.

  83. It speaks of God's anointed one.

  84. So, he was promised that he'd see the Lord's Messiah or anointed one.

  85. Verse 27.

  86. And he came in the Spirit into the temple,

  87. and when the parents, that is Mary and Joseph,

  88. brought in the child Jesus to do for him according to the custom of the law,

  89. verse 28, he took him up in his arms and blessed God.

  90. Let us pause there before we continue on.

  91. Simeon has waited and waited and waited

  92. for the long-promised deliverance of Israel.

  93. To say consolation is to say a deliverance or a redemption

  94. or salvation of the nation from their centuries-long exile,

  95. both in body and in soul, as promised by God.

  96. A bit of a background to where Israel's at by the time the first century comes.

  97. They have been scattered across the known world.

  98. They have been in exile for six, seven hundred years.

  99. They have settled in faraway lands.

  100. And as is the case for all kind of geopolitical movement,

  101. they have assimilated and synchronized their customs and faith to local practices.

  102. Oftentimes, retaining some key aspects of the faith,

  103. but also incorporating things that were not commissioned by God in any way.

  104. And yet, even in the land, so there's Jews scattered across the known world,

  105. but in the land of Israel, there were also Jews,

  106. Jews, although they were under Roman occupation.

  107. And likewise, they were a hodgepodge of beliefs and customs.

  108. Many were Hellenized, which is to say they acted and spoke

  109. and participated in Greco-Roman life.

  110. Others were adherents of various sects and cults

  111. that emphasized certain parts of the Bible over others.

  112. Some were violent.

  113. They were freedom fighters or terrorists,

  114. depending on what side of the equation you were on.

  115. Some were violent.

  116. Some were reclusive.

  117. Some had power.

  118. Some had none.

  119. But most believed that there would be a Christ or a Messiah or a chosen one

  120. that would deliver them from their enemies,

  121. whoever their enemies would be.

  122. They differed wildly on who that Messiah would be,

  123. but certainly there would be a Messiah.

  124. I guess the too-long, didn't-read of the whole matter was

  125. Israel was a giant collection of various beliefs.

  126. Very few followed the faith of the Scriptures.

  127. Why was this?

  128. I think in part because of the natural reality

  129. of large amounts of people moving to different regions.

  130. But on a spiritual level, I'll suggest to you this morning

  131. that it is because the promises God made didn't come true

  132. as fast as they wanted them to.

  133. Trusting God is hard.

  134. Having faith that endures is extremely difficult.

  135. Waiting for God to confirm and do what he says in Holy Scripture

  136. is not an easy thing.

  137. So the temptation is either to twist or reimagine God's words and promises

  138. so that they say something different,

  139. or to make them overly figurative,

  140. or even abandon Scripture altogether.

  141. So you see, waiting is a very difficult thing,

  142. and it has been the problem with God's people time and again

  143. so that they wait, and then they wait, and then they begin to forget.

  144. Constantly in the Scriptures, God tells them to remember,

  145. and yet so few do.

  146. If you or someone you know has gone through a deconstruction of their faith

  147. or has left their faith,

  148. I would wager that it is in part due to this relatable difficulty of trusting God

  149. when he seems absent.

  150. And I know that it is more complex than that,

  151. but I would suggest that that aspect is included in somebody's story

  152. or journey towards deconstruction or leaving the faith completely.

  153. And as a result, a despondency can come when God is seen as untrustworthy,

  154. when he is seen as unworthy to be the object of our praise and devotion

  155. and our faith.

  156. Waiting is hard.

  157. Waiting is hard.

  158. This is why Simeon is such a fantastic example of a faithful waiting,

  159. a faithful trust.

  160. So his age isn't given.

  161. And I kind of wrestled with this

  162. because almost all the commentaries suggest that he was a very elderly man,

  163. especially with what he was saying.

  164. But in nowhere does it say that he was an elderly man.

  165. I'm just going to take it that he is.

  166. That there's a lot of very learned people that went before me

  167. that say he was an aged man, so he's an aged man.

  168. So although his age isn't given, he is almost certainly elderly,

  169. and he is eagerly awaiting God's salvation.

  170. He says that he is both righteous and devout,

  171. meaning he is careful in his conduct with people,

  172. and he is reverent before the Lord.

  173. He seems to have understood that the Lord would make good on his promise

  174. to send the Messiah and to console or redeem Israel.

  175. And more than that, he was promised to see that consolation in the Lord's Christ

  176. with his own eyes.

  177. How does one fight against despondency,

  178. against losing one's trust in the Lord?

  179. By faithfully waiting.

  180. And here we have such a prime example to emulate.

  181. Simeon has waited well.

  182. If he is an elderly man,

  183. it suggests in the text that he has waited a very long time.

  184. He has not given in to the cults and the customs around him,

  185. nor has he abandoned the biblical faith.

  186. Which isn't to say, what I'm not saying is that he is this perfect person,

  187. but that through the years he has maintained his faith.

  188. He has remained faithful to believing in the promises that God has spoken of in the scriptures.

  189. But, you know, put on your skeptics hat.

  190. It could easily be said that anybody would have such a faith

  191. if they were promised to see the fruition of that faith.

  192. It says that the Holy Spirit revealed to him that he would not die before seeing the Lord's Christ.

  193. But I want to suggest a bit of a pushback.

  194. I've heard it said by some people that have struggled with their faith

  195. that if God would only reveal himself to me,

  196. okay, if God would only speak,

  197. then I would believe it.

  198. But I'm to believe that there is some being up there that I've never seen,

  199. I've never heard,

  200. I'm supposed to believe in this book,

  201. how am I supposed to make sense of this?

  202. Here's a bit of a pushback to that.

  203. Simeon was an elderly man who was already walking in righteousness and devotion.

  204. The text seems to imply that he was promised that he would see the Lord's Christ later in life.

  205. That this wasn't something that he was given from this promise when he was a little boy,

  206. but that he received this as an elderly man.

  207. The text also implies that this righteousness and devotion that he exhibited was longstanding.

  208. That he had a faithful walk with the Lord for many decades in his life.

  209. And he was given the revelation from the Holy Spirit that he would see the Messiah

  210. precisely because he was walking in faith,

  211. not because his faith was waning or non-existent.

  212. There's this very remarkable story later on in Luke's Gospel.

  213. Jesus himself is teaching about,

  214. he's giving a parable and it's about the rich man and Lazarus.

  215. And what's interesting is that out of all of Jesus' parables,

  216. which are instructive stories to communicate,

  217. especially truth about the kingdom of God,

  218. Lazarus, this poor man, is the only one who is named in any of the parables.

  219. I'll try to sum up and be brief about this,

  220. but Jesus tells this story about this rich man who was exceedingly wealthy

  221. and this poor beggar, Lazarus.

  222. They both die.

  223. And in the afterlife, Lazarus is in heaven.

  224. He is beside Father Abraham.

  225. And the rich man is in hell.

  226. The fire of hell is licking at him.

  227. He is in anguish.

  228. And he thinks that he can command Lazarus, who is in heaven,

  229. to do his bidding like he could command Lazarus

  230. to do his bidding when they were on earth.

  231. And it becomes very clear that this is not the case.

  232. The tables have turned.

  233. And right at the end, he says,

  234. if I can't be saved, then send Lazarus to visit my family

  235. and tell them from the grave to believe in God

  236. and to walk a faithful life.

  237. And Father Abraham, he replies like this.

  238. And this is from Luke chapter 16, verse 29.

    Luke 16:29

  239. But Abraham said,

  240. they, that is the rich man's family,

  241. they have Moses and the prophets,

  242. which is to say the scriptures.

  243. Let them hear them.

  244. But the rich man said,

  245. no, Father Abraham,

  246. but if someone goes to them from the dead,

  247. they will repent.

  248. And Abraham said to him,

  249. if they do not hear Moses and the prophets,

  250. neither will they be convinced

  251. if someone should rise from the dead.

  252. I'll just say this.

  253. We are so inoculated from belief in God,

  254. okay,

  255. as a people,

  256. as human beings.

  257. We will come up with all sorts of excuses

  258. or proofs that that wasn't really what we experienced,

  259. if we had some kind of religious experience.

  260. We are so inoculated from believing in the Lord

  261. that time and again,

  262. and this is one example,

  263. there's a few others,

  264. where even the most dramatic instance

  265. of God revealing himself

  266. would not result in a saving faith.

  267. And I would say to you this morning

  268. that that's probably still the case.

  269. Religious or not,

  270. people will look to something metaphysical.

  271. And when I say metaphysical,

  272. beyond just the material world that they see,

  273. saying it to the universe

  274. or whatever kind of belief system

  275. that in a time of crisis we lean upon,

  276. say,

  277. if only I can get through this,

  278. I will believe,

  279. or universe,

  280. pay me back for all the good karma I have given.

  281. Whatever it may be,

  282. we are constantly

  283. looking past this material world

  284. and sometimes it works.

  285. Maybe it's coincidence,

  286. okay,

  287. maybe it's not.

  288. Sometimes it works,

  289. and yet,

  290. we continue on in cycles of unbelief.

  291. I bring this up just to say,

  292. Simeon is walking in a righteous and devout way,

  293. and because of that,

  294. he is given this promise,

  295. but he doesn't become righteous and devout

  296. because he was given a promise first.

  297. Waiting is difficult.

  298. It is very, very hard.

  299. Having faith in God is a very,

  300. I mean,

  301. a near impossible task,

  302. and yet,

  303. this is what we are called to.

  304. What is important to note in our text today

  305. is that Simeon was led by the Holy Spirit,

  306. which is to say that God had empowered him

  307. to act righteously and devoutly

  308. to do the things that God had called him to do.

  309. So, back to the text.

  310. Salvation had indeed come to

  311. the one who,

  312. with expectant faith,

  313. waited for the Lord God to do

  314. what he had promised.

  315. And, as I have said,

  316. Simeon's faith, I'm sure,

  317. was beyond,

  318. was far from being perfect,

  319. and yet,

  320. he was blessed because

  321. he chose to believe.

  322. The result was great comfort.

  323. Not in a life free of pain,

  324. but in one so satisfied

  325. in purpose and meaning

  326. that it says that he could

  327. die a fulfilled man.

  328. I want to say to you this morning

  329. that faith

  330. isn't so much

  331. the amount of faith we have,

  332. but the degree of,

  333. or the,

  334. not the degree of faith that we have,

  335. but the person that our faith is in.

  336. So, what can rid a man

  337. of fear of death?

  338. How can Simeon say,

  339. I can depart in peace?

  340. What can take away the terrors

  341. of the graveyard?

  342. What can help us see

  343. soberly and clearly

  344. so that the false promises

  345. that money and power

  346. and standing

  347. and even health

  348. will not bring us

  349. ultimate satisfaction in this life?

  350. How can we have clarity

  351. in that regard?

  352. It has to be nothing

  353. less than faith

  354. in God

  355. who gives His redemption,

  356. who gives His deliverance,

  357. who gives His consolation

  358. to all peoples.

  359. This is what we see in Simeon.

  360. That this faith that he has,

  361. it buoys him up.

  362. That God strengthens him

  363. as he is walking with the Lord,

  364. as he is choosing

  365. to trust the Lord

  366. and not in other things,

  367. and the Lord is keeping him afloat.

  368. And this will then bring us

  369. to our next point.

  370. For having such a faith in God

  371. that brings about this consolation

  372. will ultimately

  373. also give us peace.

  374. And a peace that is so profound

  375. that life,

  376. that the life to come

  377. will be more of an exciting

  378. journey

  379. and prospect

  380. and adventure

  381. than anything else

  382. in this life.

  383. So we'll get to our second point,

  384. the satisfaction of peace.

  385. Look with me

  386. at the Nunc Dimittis,

  387. this prayer

  388. and song of Simeon.

  389. We'll look in verse,

  390. actually we'll start

  391. in verse 27

  392. and read down to 32.

  393. And Simeon came in the spirit

  394. into the temple,

  395. and when the parents

  396. brought in the child Jesus

  397. to do for him

  398. according to the custom of the law,

  399. Simeon took him up

  400. in his arms

  401. and blessed God

  402. and said,

  403. Lord,

  404. now you are letting

  405. your servant depart in peace

  406. according to your word.

  407. For my eyes

  408. have seen your salvation

  409. that you have prepared

  410. in the presence

  411. of all peoples

  412. a light for revelation

  413. to the Gentiles

  414. and for glory

  415. to your people Israel.

  416. In some ways,

  417. I imagine Simeon

  418. as that knight

  419. in the last crusade

  420. who is pale and old

  421. and has been waiting

  422. for centuries

  423. guarding the chalice.

  424. He is weary,

  425. and yet he is delighted

  426. that his job is finished

  427. and his time

  428. has now come to an end.

  429. Yet,

  430. these words

  431. are not those

  432. of a man

  433. who is weary

  434. from pain

  435. or frustrated

  436. with his life.

  437. Rather,

  438. they are words

  439. of a man

  440. whose desire

  441. for genuine peace

  442. has come to fruition.

  443. consider the peace

  444. Simeon possesses

  445. and how it is grounded

  446. not in speculation

  447. but in promise.

  448. A peace so powerful

  449. that he is ready

  450. to die

  451. without regret.

  452. He is ready

  453. to die

  454. without fear

  455. of unsaid words

  456. or unfinished work.

  457. Can you imagine

  458. an ending

  459. more glorious

  460. than this?

  461. A peace

  462. that God

  463. himself gives,

  464. a peace

  465. that God

  466. has promised

  467. in his word

  468. that has come

  469. to pass,

  470. these promises

  471. that were made

  472. because mankind

  473. lacked peace,

  474. because it

  475. was such

  476. an elusive thing.

  477. He may have

  478. struggled

  479. and muddled

  480. through life

  481. at certain

  482. points,

  483. but nevertheless,

  484. here he is

  485. at the end

  486. of the day

  487. and he has

  488. peace,

  489. so much peace

  490. that he is

  491. ready to depart.

  492. Last week

  493. during our

  494. Lessons and

  495. Carol service,

  496. we read

  497. a whole

  498. number of

  499. different

  500. scripture verses,

  501. nine in total,

  502. and they were

  503. communicating

  504. to us

  505. redemption,

  506. redemptive history,

  507. and it began

  508. in Genesis 3.

  509. I guess it would be

  510. on this side

  511. for you guys.

  512. Genesis 3,

  513. this promise

  514. that was made

  515. to Adam

  516. and Eve

  517. immediately

  518. after they

  519. sinned,

  520. after they

  521. broke covenant

  522. and relationship

  523. with God

  524. because of their

  525. selfish pride,

  526. that God

  527. would send

  528. someone to

  529. crush the serpent.

  530. It's kind of

  531. really interesting

  532. language,

  533. but it was

  534. the first promise

  535. that God

  536. would not

  537. allow mankind

  538. to exist

  539. in this state

  540. of evil

  541. and brokenness

  542. indefinitely.

  543. that this

  544. promise

  545. throughout the

  546. Old Testament,

  547. whether explicitly

  548. or there

  549. be allusions

  550. to it,

  551. it was

  552. constant in

  553. scripture that

  554. God would

  555. make a way

  556. for peace.

  557. No longer

  558. would we have

  559. enmity or

  560. frustration in

  561. our relationships,

  562. either with one

  563. another or

  564. between us

  565. and God.

  566. And the

  567. wonderful thing

  568. about this

  569. and what

  570. we see

  571. in Simeon's

  572. prayer

  573. is that

  574. it was

  575. according to

  576. your word,

  577. which is to

  578. say that

  579. it wasn't

  580. a contingency

  581. plan,

  582. it wasn't

  583. a plan B.

  584. This was

  585. not some

  586. kind of

  587. fix-up

  588. because God

  589. somehow

  590. didn't get

  591. the ingredients

  592. in the

  593. creation soup

  594. just right

  595. and dinner

  596. was ruined.

  597. That salvation

  598. was planned

  599. from the

  600. beginning

  601. and in the

  602. presence of

  603. all people,

  604. which is to

  605. say in the

  606. ancient world

  607. and according

  608. to the

  609. scriptures,

  610. there were

  611. the Gentiles

  612. and then

  613. there was

  614. Israel.

  615. And here

  616. it is not

  617. saying that

  618. salvation,

  619. even though

  620. just previously

  621. it said that

  622. Simeon was

  623. waiting for

  624. the consolation

  625. of Israel,

  626. it isn't

  627. just for

  628. Israel,

  629. it is for

  630. all people.

  631. So that

  632. Gentiles,

  633. those that

  634. are not a

  635. part of the

  636. Jewish nation,

  637. the Israelite

  638. nation,

  639. they are

  640. no longer

  641. destined to

  642. walk in

  643. superstition

  644. and darkness.

  645. And for

  646. the Jewish

  647. nation that

  648. since they

  649. have gone

  650. off course,

  651. they would

  652. be brought

  653. back home

  654. and given

  655. such an

  656. incredible

  657. honor that

  658. the Savior

  659. of the

  660. world was

  661. born through

  662. them.

  663. We sang

  664. O Holy

  665. Night and

  666. I mean

  667. capturing it

  668. incredibly in

  669. verse,

  670. the thrill of

  671. hope,

  672. the weary

  673. soul rejoices.

  674. This is

  675. exactly what

  676. we're reading

  677. about here

  678. in Simeon's

  679. song.

  680. But the

  681. temptation will

  682. always be to

  683. consider that

  684. peace through

  685. Christ is not

  686. enough.

  687. That what he

  688. truly gives is

  689. good but not

  690. great.

  691. That we must

  692. add something

  693. that is lacking.

  694. I one time

  695. went to,

  696. there was a

  697. Starbucks,

  698. that was like a

  699. massive frou-frou

  700. Starbucks down

  701. in the market

  702. and I had my

  703. birthday free

  704. drink so I went

  705. down there with

  706. Christine,

  707. I don't think

  708. we had any

  709. kids and I

  710. ordered,

  711. it was called a

  712. Siphon Brew

  713. Coffee and it

  714. was like $11

  715. for a coffee and

  716. it took 25

  717. minutes.

  718. This lady was

  719. like very

  720. passionate about

  721. coffee.

  722. This is how I

  723. give back to my

  724. community.

  725. Kind of like

  726. interesting way to

  727. give back to your

  728. community that can

  729. afford $12

  730. coffees.

  731. Okay, the

  732. point is,

  733. the point is

  734. after all of

  735. that, okay,

  736. after all of

  737. that, I'm

  738. expecting the

  739. best coffee I've

  740. ever tasted,

  741. okay, life

  742. changing coffee

  743. and she

  744. says, do you

  745. need room for

  746. dairy?

  747. And I think

  748. you put dairy

  749. into this, it's

  750. like putting

  751. lipstick on a

  752. pig.

  753. Like, why

  754. would we do

  755. this?

  756. Is this supposed

  757. to be the

  758. best coffee and

  759. we're going to

  760. add to it to

  761. make it better?

  762. It's supposed to

  763. be the best.

  764. And I think we

  765. do something

  766. similar,

  767. potentially,

  768. with trusting

  769. in the Lord for

  770. his peace.

  771. We have to

  772. augment it.

  773. We have to put

  774. a bit of salt on

  775. this Michelin

  776. star dinner

  777. that is in

  778. front of us.

  779. And yet,

  780. if we do

  781. that, it is

  782. not a guarantee

  783. that we will

  784. have a higher

  785. degree of

  786. peace, but it

  787. robs God's

  788. salvation of the

  789. peace that it

  790. gives.

  791. You cannot

  792. have Jesus

  793. plus, okay?

  794. You cannot have

  795. salvation plus,

  796. plus whatever you

  797. want to add after

  798. that.

  799. You can't have

  800. that.

  801. It's Christ

  802. and with him

  803. this divine

  804. peace or

  805. nothing at all.

  806. Friends, let

  807. us, like

  808. Simeon, find

  809. the satisfaction

  810. that is divine

  811. and worthy of

  812. our faith.

  813. This peace

  814. that passes

  815. all understanding.

  816. And as we

  817. wrap this up,

  818. let's read the

  819. narrative that

  820. follows the

  821. Nunc

  822. Dimittis,

  823. verses 33

  824. and 35.

  825. It's not a

  826. part of the

  827. servant song,

  828. but it's

  829. connected and

  830. has just a

  831. deep insight

  832. that is worthy

  833. of our

  834. attention.

  835. Read with

  836. me verses

  837. 33 to

  838. 35.

  839. And his

  840. father and

  841. his mother

  842. marveled at

  843. what was said

  844. about him.

  845. And Simeon

  846. blessed them

  847. and said to

  848. Mary his

  849. mother,

  850. Behold,

  851. this child

  852. is appointed

  853. for the fall

  854. and rising

  855. of many in

  856. Israel and

  857. for a sign

  858. that is

  859. opposed.

  860. And a

  861. sword will

  862. pierce through

  863. your own

  864. soul also,

  865. so that

  866. thoughts from

  867. many hearts

  868. will be

  869. revealed.

  870. He says

  871. three things

  872. here.

  873. We're going to

  874. focus briefly

  875. on just two

  876. of them.

  877. The first

  878. is that

  879. Christ will

  880. be a

  881. divisive

  882. figure.

  883. He was a

  884. divisive

  885. figure in

  886. his day.

  887. He continues

  888. to be a

  889. divisive

  890. figure in

  891. our day.

  892. Why?

  893. Because with

  894. the coming

  895. of Christ,

  896. God will

  897. make it

  898. very plain

  899. to the

  900. human race

  901. that we

  902. are very

  903. non-self

  904. sufficient

  905. people.

  906. We cannot

  907. enjoy either

  908. consolation or

  909. peace that

  910. results in

  911. long-lasting

  912. satisfaction

  913. because at

  914. our core

  915. we lack

  916. a peace

  917. and

  918. consolation.

  919. So we

  920. cannot

  921. create

  922. something that

  923. we desperately

  924. need from

  925. nothing.

  926. Okay?

  927. There's a

  928. void

  929. of peace

  930. and

  931. consolation

  932. and

  933. therefore

  934. we

  935. can't

  936. produce

  937. it

  938. ourselves.

  939. Sin and

  940. evil are

  941. so very

  942. prevalent

  943. and impossible

  944. to deal

  945. with.

  946. It will

  947. take nothing

  948. short of

  949. Christ dying

  950. in our

  951. place for

  952. our sins

  953. because we

  954. cannot atone

  955. for the

  956. wrongs we

  957. have done.

  958. Which is to

  959. say that

  960. we cannot

  961. save ourselves.

  962. We cannot

  963. give ourselves

  964. lasting peace.

  965. And the

  966. coming of

  967. Christ has

  968. made that

  969. very,

  970. very clear.

  971. there's no

  972. amount of

  973. good that

  974. we can

  975. achieve that

  976. will tip

  977. the scales

  978. in our

  979. favor that

  980. we may

  981. enjoy a

  982. self-wrought

  983. satisfaction.

  984. And why

  985. will this

  986. cause many

  987. to fall

  988. and rise?

  989. Well,

  990. for those

  991. that it

  992. will cause

  993. the fall,

  994. be that

  995. those that,

  996. and maybe

  997. some among

  998. us or maybe

  999. even seasons

  1000. in our lives

  1001. where we

  1002. think that

  1003. we can

  1004. actually exist

  1005. and live

  1006. completely

  1007. satisfied,

  1008. like a

  1009. deep,

  1010. like core,

  1011. heart of

  1012. heart satisfaction

  1013. apart from

  1014. Jesus.

  1015. Okay?

  1016. That is

  1017. what the

  1018. scripture will

  1019. call delusion.

  1020. And if you've

  1021. tried that

  1022. and have

  1023. come up

  1024. short,

  1025. you can say

  1026. actually it is

  1027. a bit of a

  1028. delusional

  1029. thought.

  1030. But for

  1031. those that

  1032. can recognize

  1033. that they

  1034. are in

  1035. deep need

  1036. of a

  1037. savior,

  1038. what Christ

  1039. extends

  1040. is mercy

  1041. and joy

  1042. and love

  1043. and an

  1044. eternal

  1045. satisfaction

  1046. that will

  1047. transcend

  1048. this world,

  1049. that will

  1050. be rooted

  1051. in an

  1052. unchanging

  1053. God and

  1054. therefore will

  1055. never change.

  1056. And it's

  1057. offered to

  1058. us as a

  1059. free gift

  1060. of grace.

  1061. The second

  1062. point that

  1063. he makes

  1064. is related

  1065. to the

  1066. first,

  1067. but it

  1068. speaks to

  1069. Christ being

  1070. both God

  1071. and judge.

  1072. Notice at

  1073. the very

  1074. end,

  1075. Simeon

  1076. says that

  1077. Christ will

  1078. cause the

  1079. thoughts

  1080. from many

  1081. hearts to

  1082. be revealed.

  1083. Throughout

  1084. the New

  1085. Testament,

  1086. there are

  1087. 13 uses

  1088. of this

  1089. word

  1090. translated

  1091. here as

  1092. thoughts,

  1093. and in

  1094. every

  1095. instance,

  1096. it comes

  1097. with a

  1098. negative

  1099. constant,

  1100. it is

  1101. pejorative,

  1102. it's negative.

  1103. These thoughts

  1104. are bad

  1105. thoughts,

  1106. these thoughts

  1107. are vain

  1108. thoughts,

  1109. these thoughts

  1110. are doubting

  1111. thoughts,

  1112. these are

  1113. thoughts all

  1114. of which are

  1115. hostile to

  1116. God and

  1117. his purposes.

  1118. It is

  1119. really the

  1120. condition of

  1121. one's heart

  1122. that our

  1123. thoughts are

  1124. then reflecting.

  1125. Therefore,

  1126. when Simeon

  1127. says that

  1128. the thoughts

  1129. from many

  1130. hearts will

  1131. be revealed,

  1132. he means

  1133. that the

  1134. coming of

  1135. Christ will

  1136. show how

  1137. utterly

  1138. broken and

  1139. sinful and

  1140. deceived the

  1141. human heart

  1142. truly is.

  1143. And on one

  1144. hand,

  1145. the life of

  1146. Christ will

  1147. be so

  1148. utterly and

  1149. completely

  1150. perfect that

  1151. all of

  1152. existence will

  1153. see this

  1154. life as the

  1155. ultimate

  1156. exemplar and

  1157. therefore the

  1158. standard of

  1159. goodness and

  1160. of kindness

  1161. and love so

  1162. that even

  1163. people outside

  1164. of the Christian

  1165. faith can

  1166. talk about

  1167. Jesus and

  1168. often wonder

  1169. why his

  1170. followers don't

  1171. look like

  1172. him.

  1173. But it will

  1174. also mean that

  1175. no human soul

  1176. can hide their

  1177. wickedness from

  1178. his just

  1179. judgment.

  1180. Simeon is

  1181. saying that

  1182. Christ sees

  1183. all.

  1184. God sees

  1185. all.

  1186. And he knows

  1187. all.

  1188. And he is the

  1189. only one who

  1190. will perfectly

  1191. judge all

  1192. who ever

  1193. lived.

  1194. And all

  1195. who ever

  1196. lived will

  1197. be judged.

  1198. It's a

  1199. terrifying

  1200. thought,

  1201. okay?

  1202. It's a

  1203. terrifying

  1204. thought.

  1205. But maybe

  1206. not so

  1207. terrifying if

  1208. we consider

  1209. this incredible

  1210. scene once

  1211. again.

  1212. For what

  1213. we see is

  1214. Simeon,

  1215. this elderly

  1216. man, at

  1217. the end of

  1218. his life,

  1219. holding this

  1220. tender,

  1221. helpless baby

  1222. in his arms.

  1223. And yet

  1224. that child

  1225. was the

  1226. creator,

  1227. is the

  1228. creator of

  1229. all things.

  1230. The one who

  1231. actually is

  1232. holding Simeon

  1233. and holding

  1234. us this

  1235. morning.

  1236. That in the

  1237. incarnation,

  1238. God literally

  1239. became a

  1240. human being,

  1241. took on

  1242. flesh,

  1243. that God

  1244. became

  1245. enfleshed.

  1246. And it is

  1247. nothing short

  1248. of God

  1249. knowing our

  1250. sinful estate

  1251. and our

  1252. utter helplessness

  1253. becoming

  1254. himself helpless.

  1255. And although

  1256. he knew no

  1257. sin,

  1258. became sin

  1259. for us so

  1260. that,

  1261. what 1

  1262. Corinthians

  1263. tells us,

  1264. that we

  1265. might become

  1266. the righteousness

  1267. of God.

  1268. I'll end

  1269. with this.

  1270. God loves

  1271. you.

  1272. He loves

  1273. you.

  1274. He loves

  1275. you,

  1276. and he

  1277. loves you

  1278. in such

  1279. a way

  1280. that he

  1281. is willing

  1282. to go to

  1283. great length

  1284. so that you

  1285. will be with

  1286. him.

  1287. And yet,

  1288. he does so

  1289. knowing all

  1290. of your junk,

  1291. all of your

  1292. history,

  1293. all of the

  1294. things that

  1295. you would

  1296. blush to

  1297. confess.

  1298. He knows

  1299. it all,

  1300. and he

  1301. loves you.

  1302. His great

  1303. desire is to

  1304. console you

  1305. with an

  1306. everlasting

  1307. consolation,

  1308. to give you

  1309. peace and

  1310. satisfaction

  1311. to such a

  1312. degree that

  1313. this life,

  1314. although it is

  1315. wonderful and

  1316. good and

  1317. worthy to be

  1318. enjoyed,

  1319. it will

  1320. pale in

  1321. comparison to

  1322. the life to

  1323. come,

  1324. the satisfaction

  1325. and peace

  1326. that he

  1327. will give.

  1328. For he

  1329. will give

  1330. you himself.

  1331. The eternal

  1332. God has

  1333. welcomed us

  1334. into his

  1335. very presence

  1336. if we are

  1337. but to

  1338. trust in

  1339. him.

  1340. Again,

  1341. not a

  1342. perfect

  1343. trust,

  1344. but put

  1345. our faith

  1346. in Christ

  1347. himself

  1348. to remind

  1349. ourselves and

  1350. believe that

  1351. no achievement

  1352. that we

  1353. could do

  1354. can bring

  1355. us such

  1356. satisfaction,

  1357. that there's

  1358. no amount

  1359. of good

  1360. living we

  1361. can do

  1362. that will

  1363. bring us

  1364. a consolation

  1365. that will

  1366. even hold

  1367. a candle

  1368. to what God

  1369. is offering

  1370. us to us

  1371. in Jesus

  1372. Christ.

  1373. So I think

  1374. what Simeon

  1375. is telling us

  1376. to do this

  1377. morning with

  1378. his life

  1379. is to

  1380. trust in

  1381. Christ and

  1382. like Simeon

  1383. to enjoy

  1384. a holy

  1385. satisfaction,

  1386. a deep,

  1387. deep trust

  1388. that we

  1389. may know

  1390. the Prince

  1391. of Peace

  1392. all the

  1393. days of

  1394. our life.

  1395. as
