  1. The first reading is from Romans 1, 1-15.

  2. For the sake of his name among all nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

  3. To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints,

  4. grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  5. First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,

  6. because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.

  7. For God is my witness, whom I serve with his spirit, the gospel of his Son,

  8. that without ceasing I mention you, always in my prayers,

  9. asking that somehow, by God's will, I may now at last succeed in coming to you.

  10. For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you,

  11. that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith, both yours and mine.

  12. I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you,

  13. but thus far have been prevented,

  14. in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles.

  15. I am under obligations both to Greeks and to barbarians,

  16. both to the wise and to the foolish,

  17. for I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

  18. In May 1738,

  19. a 30-year-old man walked into a Christian meeting at Aldersgate, London,

  20. and upon hearing the message, he put his faith in Christ.

  21. And what makes this story remarkable

  22. isn't that a young man came to faith,

  23. although that's remarkable,

  24. be remarkable these days, absolutely.

  25. But it's that this 30-year-old man was an Anglican minister

  26. for some 10 years before he walked into this meeting.

  27. Not only that, he was Oxford-trained,

  28. and he even spent time in the New World

  29. being a chaplain for the British colony in Georgia.

  30. This young man was a religious man,

  31. yet to his own testimony,

  32. his heart was cold towards the things of God.

  33. So on that night,

  34. in 1738,

  35. the Reverend John Wesley heard

  36. Martin Luther's preface to St. Paul's epistle to the Romans,

  37. this very thing,

  38. many of us are holding in our hands,

  39. and his heart was warmed.

  40. And he wrote about this encounter in his journal,

  41. and this is what he said,

  42. quote,

  43. About a quarter before nine,

  44. while he was describing the change

  45. which God works in the heart through faith in Christ,

  46. I felt my heart strangely warmed.

  47. I felt I did trust in Christ,

  48. Christ alone for salvation,

  49. and an assurance was given me

  50. that he had taken away my sins,

  51. even mine.

  52. And save me from the law of sin and death,

  53. end quote.

  54. You know,

  55. all scripture we say in this church

  56. is God's word written,

  57. it is breathed out by God,

  58. yet Romans

  59. holds a very unique place in the canon

  60. and in many of our lives.

  61. John Wesley,

  62. whom I just read this story,

  63. had his heart strangely warmed

  64. towards the Lord

  65. through the reading

  66. and explaining

  67. of Paul's letter to the epistle.

  68. St. Augustine as well,

  69. if you're familiar with his confessions,

  70. he will talk about

  71. hearing this voice,

  72. say,

  73. pick up and read,

  74. and what he ends up reading

  75. is a portion from Romans.

  76. I know somebody close to me

  77. that it was their experience as well,

  78. hearing the gospel

  79. explained by St. Paul

  80. in Romans

  81. that opened up their eyes

  82. to the fact that they were truly saved.

  83. Maybe it's the case for some of you

  84. this morning.

  85. All of God's

  86. scriptures,

  87. all of scripture is God's word written,

  88. yet Romans

  89. is really a remarkable book.

  90. And as we turn to it

  91. over these next few weeks

  92. leading up to Easter,

  93. we'll take a break from it.

  94. We'll jump back into it in September.

  95. Our goal is to hit the entire book

  96. probably in three to four sections

  97. over the next couple years.

  98. But as we get into this,

  99. we're going to see what the gospel is all about.

  100. We're going to see how the gospel

  101. is the very means

  102. by which God draws people to himself,

  103. that it is the only way

  104. by which men and women can be saved.

  105. And it isn't

  106. just a nice set

  107. of intellectual propositions

  108. that we ascend to,

  109. but it is

  110. the only good,

  111. true good news

  112. that can truly fulfill the human heart.

  113. So we're going to turn our attention

  114. this morning

  115. to this opening greeting

  116. in Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:1–15

  117. verses 1 to 15,

  118. and we'll see the centrality

  119. of the gospel.

  120. And we're going to keep things

  121. very simple,

  122. and we're going to look at

  123. the author,

  124. the message,

  125. and then the implications

  126. of the gospel.

  127. The author,

  128. the message,

  129. the implications.

  130. A bit of a background

  131. before we jump into it.

  132. So Romans was written around,

  133. the historians and theologians,

  134. figure about 57 AD,

  135. AD 57,

  136. by the Apostle Paul.

  137. In terms of the biblical timeline,

  138. if you're familiar

  139. with the narrative in Acts,

  140. we were in Acts

  141. not too long ago,

  142. but this would be

  143. almost certainly

  144. during Paul's

  145. third missionary journey.

  146. He's held up in Corinth

  147. for a number of months,

  148. and we believe that

  149. that's when he wrote this,

  150. this letter to this church in Rome.

  151. Regarding the geopolitical situation,

  152. interestingly,

  153. it was written not long

  154. after Claudius' expulsion

  155. of the Jews from Rome.

  156. That happened around AD 41.

  157. It lasted to about AD 54.

  158. And this is significant for us.

  159. Not so much this morning,

  160. although we'll see it,

  161. its significance

  162. throughout the weeks to come.

  163. But here's why it's significant.

  164. The church in Rome

  165. almost certainly

  166. was a mixed group

  167. of Jews and non-Jews.

  168. Jews and Greeks

  169. and barbarians,

  170. we'll see barbarians

  171. as a term simply

  172. to refer to Gentiles

  173. who aren't Greeks.

  174. So it's a mixed church,

  175. and it would seem

  176. that there was a number

  177. of Jewish people

  178. coming to faith in Jesus,

  179. and it caused frustration

  180. and alarm

  181. amongst the non-believing

  182. Jewish population.

  183. So much so

  184. that Claudius

  185. expelled all of the Jews

  186. from Rome.

  187. So what ends up happening

  188. is the church continues

  189. to grow,

  190. but it has lost

  191. its understanding

  192. and its connection

  193. to its Jewish roots.

  194. So, again,

  195. this is just for background.

  196. We're not going to get

  197. into it this morning,

  198. but we'll see that

  199. Paul's going to address

  200. a lot of these questions.

  201. The church in Rome

  202. would have had

  203. about 10 years,

  204. maybe longer,

  205. devoid of Jewish believers.

  206. So how would this

  207. once mixed church respond

  208. when some Jewish believers

  209. return?

  210. Again, maybe two to three years

  211. after the expulsion

  212. edict is lifted.

  213. How would this tension

  214. be navigated theologically?

  215. Is it enough

  216. to just have Jesus

  217. completely separated

  218. from the Hebrew scriptures

  219. and the Hebrew patriarchs

  220. and the Hebrew prophets

  221. and the Hebrew people?

  222. Do they still have a place?

  223. Paul will answer this

  224. throughout the letter,

  225. but again,

  226. we won't touch on it today.

  227. So,

  228. Paul has yet to meet

  229. this Roman church.

  230. He's long desired

  231. to see them

  232. as we'll read

  233. in verse 13.

  234. So he introduces himself

  235. to them,

  236. not unlike other letters,

  237. but in a more expansive way

  238. and in doing so,

  239. he reveals not only

  240. his identity

  241. and bona fides,

  242. so to speak,

  243. but also provides

  244. a very succinct

  245. yet incredibly dense

  246. explainer of the gospel.

  247. Okay?

  248. So that's a bit of the background

  249. going into the letter.

  250. We're just gonna look

  251. at our first point,

  252. who this author is,

  253. who St. Paul is,

  254. verse one.

  255. Paul,

  256. a servant of Jesus,

  257. of Christ Jesus,

  258. called to be an apostle,

  259. set apart for the gospel

  260. of God.

  261. This will be a short point,

  262. I think it's,

  263. though it's very helpful

  264. to draw your attention

  265. to a couple of things.

  266. Notice how Paul leads

  267. with his bona fides.

  268. I guess first consider

  269. what he does not include

  270. in there.

  271. Now later on,

  272. he'll talk about

  273. how he's a Hebrew of Hebrews,

  274. that he's from the tribe

  275. of Benjamin,

  276. he's a Pharisee,

  277. he's knowledgeable,

  278. doesn't mention any of that.

  279. What does he mention

  280. first off?

  281. That he is a servant

  282. of Christ.

  283. He also mentions

  284. that he is an apostle.

  285. And on the surface,

  286. these titles seem

  287. somewhat conflicting.

  288. Why?

  289. Because of the

  290. the disproportionate

  291. separation of status

  292. between a servant

  293. and an apostle.

  294. A servant,

  295. it would be best

  296. to describe it

  297. or translate it

  298. as a bond servant

  299. or a slave.

  300. Now,

  301. just right off the bat,

  302. this isn't the same

  303. as Roman slavery existed.

  304. In fact,

  305. slavery has existed

  306. in almost every culture

  307. throughout time.

  308. Roman slavery

  309. is not the same

  310. as chattel slavery

  311. with the transatlantic

  312. slave trade.

  313. nevertheless,

  314. even though

  315. these Roman slaves

  316. would have had

  317. status

  318. and affluence,

  319. they were

  320. lesser on the hierarchy.

  321. So much so

  322. that a Roman citizen,

  323. it was against the law

  324. for a Roman citizen

  325. to become a slave.

  326. So even though

  327. a slave

  328. in Paul's day,

  329. in the first century,

  330. would have had

  331. somewhat high status,

  332. they were still

  333. pretty much

  334. close to the bottom rung

  335. of the social hierarchy.

  336. So Paul is

  337. a slave of Christ.

  338. Yet on the other hand,

  339. he is

  340. an apostle.

  341. Now the apostles,

  342. at least within

  343. the Christian community,

  344. were held

  345. with the highest esteem.

  346. The apostles

  347. were the ones

  348. who walked

  349. with Jesus,

  350. who interacted

  351. with Jesus

  352. intimately,

  353. who knew

  354. the sound

  355. of his voice

  356. and sat

  357. under his teaching.

  358. Now the apostle Paul

  359. becomes an apostle

  360. not with the 12

  361. and then later

  362. the 11,

  363. but rather

  364. when he is

  365. on his way

  366. to persecute

  367. the church

  368. on the Damascus road

  369. and the risen Lord

  370. Jesus Christ

  371. reveals himself

  372. to Paul

  373. and commissions him

  374. to be an apostle.

  375. Nevertheless,

  376. the apostle

  377. whom Paul

  378. says he is,

  379. I mean,

  380. right up there

  381. with the prophets

  382. of old,

  383. maybe even higher

  384. in terms of

  385. religious status.

  386. So we have

  387. a slave

  388. on one hand

  389. and an apostle

  390. on the other.

  391. And yet Paul

  392. is identifying

  393. himself as both.

  394. Both as a servant

  395. and an apostle

  396. entrusted with the gospel.

  397. I think the big

  398. takeaway from all this

  399. is that

  400. the apostle Paul

  401. is recognizing

  402. and stating

  403. right off the get-go

  404. that his life

  405. is not his own.

  406. He has agency,

  407. he is not

  408. some kind

  409. of automaton.

  410. Nevertheless,

  411. he is in

  412. the service

  413. of a higher power

  414. of a higher king.

  415. The apostle's

  416. life is

  417. no longer

  418. his own.

  419. He has been

  420. commissioned by God

  421. to proclaim

  422. the gospel

  423. specifically

  424. to the Greeks

  425. and to the barbarians.

  426. So,

  427. what is this

  428. gospel of God

  429. that he is set

  430. apart for,

  431. that he is

  432. commissioned

  433. to proclaim?

  434. This gets into

  435. our second point.

  436. This will be

  437. the longest section

  438. that we look into.

  439. It's verses 2 to 7.

  440. But before we get

  441. into the text,

  442. a bit of the term

  443. gospel.

  444. Now,

  445. gospel's a very

  446. churchy word.

  447. We've heard it

  448. if you've come to church,

  449. if you've come to this church

  450. for some time.

  451. It's a very

  452. churchy word

  453. and I've probably

  454. not done the greatest job

  455. explaining it,

  456. rather assuming

  457. that people know

  458. what it is.

  459. Okay?

  460. That's on me

  461. if you're like,

  462. I've been coming

  463. to this church

  464. for a while

  465. and I don't know

  466. what the gospel is.

  467. You know,

  468. come to me,

  469. let me know

  470. so I can apologize

  471. to you about that.

  472. Nevertheless,

  473. it's a word

  474. that a lot of us

  475. take for granted

  476. that we know.

  477. We have it defined

  478. in our minds

  479. or at least

  480. we think we do.

  481. And really,

  482. this is what

  483. the gospel is.

  484. The gospel literally

  485. means a good message.

  486. It's a message

  487. of victory

  488. that in the ancient world,

  489. it's not exclusive

  490. to Christianity,

  491. would be heralded

  492. by a messenger.

  493. So,

  494. if you think about

  495. in the first century

  496. or the centuries

  497. leading up to

  498. the writing

  499. of the epistle,

  500. you think of

  501. a big battle,

  502. the victory is won,

  503. peace is achieved,

  504. and then a herald

  505. will go before the king

  506. city and proclaim

  507. that the king

  508. is coming back,

  509. the victorious king

  510. would be coming back.

  511. This is what

  512. a gospel is.

  513. This is what

  514. the good news

  515. would entail.

  516. Now,

  517. this makes sense

  518. in connection

  519. to what we're

  520. going to look at,

  521. although,

  522. it is not exactly

  523. an apples to apples

  524. comparison.

  525. Jesus truly is,

  526. and what we'll see,

  527. is that he truly is

  528. the victorious king,

  529. but he is not

  530. the victorious king

  531. that unsheathes

  532. the sword

  533. and puts to death

  534. enemies,

  535. but rather

  536. a king that

  537. himself dies

  538. so that he can

  539. conquer sin

  540. and death.

  541. So,

  542. this is what

  543. the good news is

  544. that we will encounter

  545. throughout this letter.

  546. Now,

  547. there's many facets

  548. to it,

  549. and this is going

  550. to be the whole

  551. job and journey

  552. of us

  553. to figure out

  554. as we go through

  555. Romans

  556. over the next

  557. few weeks.

  558. But Paul goes

  559. on to explain

  560. in a very succinct

  561. way in the next

  562. few verses,

  563. outlining five

  564. aspects of this

  565. good news.

  566. This is what it

  567. says,

  568. I'll read verses

  569. one to six,

  570. and then we're

  571. going to jump

  572. right into it

  573. and look at

  574. these five

  575. aspects of the

  576. gospel.

  577. Paul,

  578. a servant

  579. of Christ Jesus,

  580. called to be

  581. an apostle,

  582. set apart for

  583. the gospel

  584. of God,

  585. which he promised

  586. beforehand

  587. through his

  588. prophets in

  589. the holy scriptures

  590. concerning his

  591. son,

  592. who was descended

  593. from David

  594. according to the

  595. flesh,

  596. and was declared

  597. to be the son

  598. of God

  599. and power

  600. according to

  601. the spirit

  602. of holiness

  603. by his

  604. resurrection

  605. from the dead,

  606. Jesus Christ,

  607. our Lord,

  608. through whom

  609. we have received

  610. grace and

  611. apostleship

  612. to bring about

  613. the obedience

  614. of faith for

  615. the sake of

  616. his name

  617. among all

  618. the nations,

  619. including you,

  620. who are called

  621. to belong to

  622. Christ Jesus.

  623. That is a

  624. long sentence.

  625. Let's break it

  626. down.

  627. First,

  628. you'll notice

  629. that the gospel

  630. originates with

  631. God the Father.

  632. We see that at

  633. the end of

  634. verse 1.

  635. It is not a

  636. human invention

  637. by Paul or

  638. another earthly

  639. church leader.

  640. Because it

  641. originates with

  642. God, it

  643. cannot therefore

  644. be a contingency

  645. plan.

  646. What do I mean

  647. by this?

  648. It is not as

  649. though God

  650. created this

  651. beautiful,

  652. perfect world

  653. and then

  654. Adam and

  655. Eve fell,

  656. what we call

  657. original sin,

  658. the fall,

  659. capital F,

  660. and God was

  661. scrambling to

  662. figure out how

  663. to fix it.

  664. As if it

  665. just, you

  666. know, this

  667. catastrophe

  668. presented itself

  669. and caught God

  670. unawares.

  671. Rather, this

  672. has been the

  673. plan of God

  674. from before

  675. all time.

  676. Among God's

  677. many attributes,

  678. and this is

  679. where understanding

  680. some bits of

  681. doctrine help

  682. us to read

  683. scripture better,

  684. among God's

  685. many attributes

  686. that are exclusive

  687. to him, which

  688. means that we

  689. don't share

  690. them with God

  691. in any way,

  692. God is omniscient.

  693. What does that

  694. mean?

  695. God's omniscience

  696. means that he

  697. knows all and

  698. is surprised by

  699. nothing.

  700. All of his plans

  701. and all of his

  702. actions are not

  703. in response to

  704. surprises or

  705. advances that

  706. come upon him.

  707. It means that

  708. what God has

  709. willed has been

  710. willed from

  711. before time.

  712. Now, again,

  713. we take this

  714. mystery by faith

  715. because it's

  716. hard for finite

  717. minds to grasp

  718. an infinite God.

  719. Nevertheless, it's

  720. an important

  721. point.

  722. God is sovereign

  723. in his will.

  724. We do not have

  725. time this morning

  726. to take this

  727. theological detour

  728. into the sovereignty

  729. of God in

  730. relation to human

  731. agency.

  732. prophecy.

  733. We're going to

  734. touch on that in

  735. later weeks in

  736. Romans, especially

  737. when we get to

  738. Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  739. That's when things

  740. get really wonderfully

  741. complicated.

  742. However, I want to

  743. make the point that

  744. God originates, the

  745. gospel originates with

  746. God and is his

  747. planned good news of

  748. victory over sin and

  749. death forever.

  750. Okay, the second

  751. thing that we see in

  752. this short little

  753. opening from the

  754. apostle Paul, that

  755. it is promised good

  756. news.

  757. You'll notice that in

  758. verse 2, that God

  759. promised beforehand

  760. through his prophets

  761. in the Holy

  762. Scriptures.

  763. He's talking about the

  764. Old Testament here.

  765. It is promised good

  766. news.

  767. So this is a new

  768. revelation from God,

  769. something he wanted

  770. to introduce through

  771. Paul or even Jesus

  772. himself.

  773. And yes, the gospel

  774. for sure is fully

  775. revealed in Christ as

  776. we will see here this

  777. morning and in the

  778. weeks to come.

  779. However, the promise

  780. that God would remedy

  781. and redeem the

  782. corruption and decay of

  783. sin and death, it

  784. goes all the way back

  785. to the opening chapters

  786. of the Bible, which

  787. is to say that it is

  788. the promised good news

  789. of God's victory.

  790. We see allusions, we

  791. see symbols, we hear

  792. prophecies.

  793. There are numerous

  794. instances in the Old

  795. Testament that will say

  796. pretty explicitly,

  797. oftentimes implicitly,

  798. that God is not okay

  799. with what he sees with

  800. sin and death and he is

  801. looking to remedy it.

  802. What will it look like?

  803. He gives little clues,

  804. leaves a breadcrumb trail,

  805. so to speak.

  806. But it's not absent from

  807. the Old Testament.

  808. Now, this is very

  809. important for us because

  810. there are other religions

  811. that have come since

  812. Christianity that have

  813. claimed the same thing,

  814. that claim a Genesis

  815. back to, say, Genesis.

  816. But a simple examination

  817. of Scripture shows that

  818. Muhammad would not be the

  819. last and final prophet.

  820. That Joseph Smith, for

  821. instance, he did not

  822. stumble upon a hidden truth.

  823. In fact, so much of the

  824. false religions that have

  825. taken place since

  826. Christianity came about,

  827. they will always tinker

  828. and tamper in some kind

  829. of way with God's

  830. Scripture so that they

  831. either deny it completely

  832. or they find in it

  833. falsely proof that

  834. justifies their religion

  835. and beliefs.

  836. The Gospel is promised

  837. good news, finding its

  838. Genesis in Genesis and

  839. throughout the rest of

  840. the Old Testament.

  841. Thirdly, and most

  842. importantly for us to

  843. truly understand, is that

  844. the Gospel concerns God

  845. the Son.

  846. God the Son.

  847. Here is our first

  848. example of Paul getting

  849. incredibly specific in

  850. Romans, wasting zero ink

  851. about who Jesus is,

  852. what he came to do.

  853. The Gospel concerning the

  854. Son is tied to the

  855. incarnation, right off the

  856. bat, Paul says.

  857. God the Son descended,

  858. taking on human flesh,

  859. descended from the line

  860. of David, yet he remained

  861. fully God.

  862. Not only that, but his

  863. earthly ministry was both

  864. humble and powerful, as

  865. evidenced by his conquering

  866. the greatest foe, death,

  867. and through which he would

  868. die himself and rise again

  869. from the dead.

  870. He defeats death by

  871. death.

  872. And here is where we

  873. begin to see that this

  874. good news is completely

  875. connected to God the Son

  876. being fully man and fully

  877. God.

  878. Not only has Paul cited the

  879. incarnation, he has also

  880. referenced the resurrection,

  881. which is to say that he

  882. has in mind the entirety of

  883. Jesus' life culminating in

  884. the victory over the grave and

  885. his ascension to heaven.

  886. This eternal plan of God,

  887. promised in the scriptures,

  888. carried out by the Son, was

  889. for all humanity.

  890. And this is then the fourth

  891. point that Paul will make.

  892. The scope of this gospel is

  893. for all nations.

  894. Later on in the letter, Paul

  895. will talk about the primacy of

  896. the people of Israel throughout

  897. the Old Testament as God's

  898. chosen people, and how

  899. although they will continue to

  900. have a special place in the

  901. biblical narrative, not least

  902. because the Savior was born a

  903. Jew, but that this gospel

  904. then is expanded and it

  905. becomes good news for all

  906. people.

  907. All have sinned and fallen

  908. short of the glory of God,

  909. Paul will say in Romans

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  910. chapter 3.

  911. So if a human being exists

  912. that has fallen into sin or

  913. has missed the mark or who

  914. has corrupted relationships or

  915. a distorted way of thinking,

  916. whose desires are all askew,

  917. Paul says the gospel is for

  918. you.

  919. It is for you.

  920. The scope of the gospel is for

  921. all people.

  922. All have been corrupted by sin,

  923. which means all have the

  924. inability to fix and redeem

  925. and to become enlightened and

  926. save themselves.

  927. Therefore, all need a Savior and

  928. all are therefore in need of the

  929. gospel.

  930. And then finally, the fifth

  931. point that he makes is the

  932. purpose of the gospel.

  933. The purpose of the gospel to

  934. bring praise and glory to the

  935. one and only true king of all.

  936. And this is expressed in two

  937. ways.

  938. The first is found in verse 6.

  939. It means it's for all who

  940. belong to Christ.

  941. It means that we belong to him.

  942. And again, Paul here is like he

  943. is packing this one sentence

  944. with numerous hyperlinks that

  945. we could click on and explore

  946. and we will explore in the

  947. weeks to come.

  948. But it is to say that through

  949. the Holy Spirit, God is calling

  950. people to himself to a life

  951. under good and godly rule of

  952. the one true God who is king and

  953. lord over all.

  954. It means like the apostle Paul

  955. says in that opening verse that

  956. if you are in Christ, you are no

  957. longer your own.

  958. You have become a new creation

  959. and also a bondservant or a

  960. slave of Christ.

  961. He is your master.

  962. I'll just pause really quickly

  963. here because I don't want to be

  964. mastered by anybody.

  965. Whether you're a Christian or

  966. somebody who is struggling with

  967. the faith or maybe completely

  968. outside of the faith, who wants

  969. to be called a slave?

  970. Who wants to be called somebody

  971. who has a master?

  972. We have moved on from such

  973. uncomfortable statements.

  974. But I think, and the more I

  975. thought about this, the more it

  976. made sense for me, okay, for me.

  977. Maybe for you as well.

  978. But I fashion myself as somebody

  979. who is in charge of my own life.

  980. But I am mastered by many things,

  981. okay?

  982. I am a slave to other things.

  983. The stark reality is that

  984. I am a slave, and maybe you

  985. are as well, to your appetites,

  986. to the pressures of performance

  987. and achievement, to your desires

  988. that aren't evil but terribly

  989. disordered and thus becoming

  990. evil.

  991. You are a slave

  992. to

  993. the thought of

  994. kicking back, putting up your

  995. feet, and just resting as if that

  996. is the pinnacle of your

  997. week.

  998. You are mastered by

  999. things.

1000. You are a slave to

  1001. things.

1002. It's an uncomfortable truth, but

  1003. be honest with yourself.

1004. Ask yourself, if you truly are in

1005. the driver's seat of your life,

  1006. in all respects,

  1007. put another way,

  1008. we think we are

  1009. lords of our lives,

  1010. but we

  1011. certainly are not.

1012. We think we sit on the throne

1013. of our hearts, but we

  1014. certainly are not.

  1015. But with Christ,

  1016. this

  1017. master of all,

  1018. this lord of all,

  1019. this king of all,

  1020. he's perfectly just.

  1021. And he is

  1022. such a just

  1023. master

1024. that he begins to shape

  1025. us and form us

1026. so that the disordered parts

  1027. of our lives

  1028. become more

  1029. ordered.

  1030. We

  1031. begin to rightly

  1032. enjoy the things

  1033. that are good

  1034. that we have

  1035. previously

  1036. enjoyed a bit

  1037. too much

  1038. or put too much

  1039. emphasis upon.

  1040. We

  1041. begin to,

  1042. in a very

  1043. real way,

  1044. begin to look like

  1045. Christ.

  1046. He

  1047. shapes us

  1048. to conform

  1049. to him.

  1050. That's the first

  1051. way,

  1052. in verse 6,

  1053. we become

  1054. Christ's.

  1055. The second

  1056. way

  1057. that we

  1058. give glory

  1059. to him

  1060. is by

  1061. growing in

  1062. our fidelity

  1063. and obedience

  1064. to that king.

  1065. So it's not just

  1066. that he

  1067. makes us

  1068. his own,

  1069. but he,

  1070. again,

  1071. like I've

  1072. briefly mentioned,

  1073. he begins to

  1074. fashion us

  1075. and conform

  1076. us to

  1077. look like

  1078. him.

  1079. He,

  1080. the apostle

  1081. Paul says this

  1082. in verse 5,

  1083. through whom

  1084. we have

  1085. received grace,

  1086. that is

  1087. the power

  1088. and strength,

  1089. to bring

  1090. about the

  1091. obedience of

  1092. faith,

  1093. that is the

  1094. conformity

  1095. to that

  1096. king.

  1097. And he

  1098. gives us

  1099. the Holy

  1100. Spirit,

  1101. the very

  1102. power that

  1103. raised Jesus

  1104. from the

  1105. dead,

  1106. to help us

  1107. obey him

  1108. and live

  1109. under his

  1110. good and

  1111. beautiful

  1112. rule.

  1113. Five points

  1114. that mark

  1115. the gospel,

  1116. what the

  1117. gospel is all

  1118. about.

  1119. Not an

  1120. exhaustive list,

  1121. but certainly

  1122. a comprehensive

  1123. one for us

  1124. this morning.

  1125. And in them

  1126. we begin to

  1127. see that

  1128. this gospel

  1129. message is

  1130. not simply

  1131. this proclamation

  1132. that there

  1133. was a king

  1134. that defeated

  1135. death long

  1136. ago and

  1137. we,

  1138. it's great,

  1139. it's wonderful,

  1140. but that

  1141. this good

  1142. news

  1143. is actually

  1144. about a

  1145. human being

  1146. that lived

  1147. and died

  1148. and rose

  1149. again.

  1150. So less

  1151. about a

  1152. news brief

  1153. and more

  1154. about a

  1155. person.

  1156. And all

  1157. of which is

  1158. summed up in

  1159. verse 7.

  1160. Read with

  1161. me,

  1162. verse 7.

  1163. To all

  1164. those in

  1165. Rome who

  1166. are loved

  1167. by God,

  1168. called to

  1169. be saints,

  1170. and then he

  1171. says,

  1172. grace to you

  1173. and peace

  1174. from God

  1175. our Father

  1176. and the

  1177. Lord Jesus

  1178. Christ.

  1179. The love

  1180. of God,

  1181. it fuels

  1182. all of this,

  1183. for God

  1184. loves us

  1185. first,

  1186. before we

  1187. knew him,

  1188. before we

  1189. could recognize

  1190. our need

  1191. for him,

  1192. before the

  1193. gospel was

  1194. ever a

  1195. concept that

  1196. entered into

  1197. our minds.

  1198. his completely

  1199. undeserved love

  1200. for us,

  1201. marks us

  1202. above all,

  1203. for he

  1204. calls us,

  1205. beckons us

  1206. to joyfully

  1207. live out this

  1208. life.

  1209. And that

  1210. doesn't mean

  1211. a life devoid

  1212. of difficulty

  1213. or sadness,

  1214. but a life

  1215. of joy and

  1216. fulfillment in

  1217. him.

  1218. What he does

  1219. is that he

  1220. makes a sinner

  1221. into a saint.

  1222. He transforms

  1223. the lowly and

  1224. broken into

  1225. redeemed

  1226. children of

  1227. God.

  1228. God.

  1229. And this

  1230. is what

  1231. grace does

  1232. to the

  1233. human heart.

  1234. It gives

  1235. us a peace

  1236. that we

  1237. so desperately

  1238. desire,

  1239. yet our

  1240. corrupted

  1241. hearts are

  1242. incapable of

  1243. enjoying.

  1244. Peace with

  1245. God and

  1246. peace with

  1247. one another

  1248. is available

  1249. to us

  1250. through Christ.

  1251. This is

  1252. what the

  1253. gospel is

  1254. according to

  1255. Saint Paul.

  1256. That gospel

  1257. that gives

  1258. us grace

  1259. and peace

  1260. making us

  1261. saints

  1262. because of

  1263. God's love.

  1264. And now we

  1265. will see the

  1266. implications

  1267. of that

  1268. gospel in

  1269. our third

  1270. point.

  1271. Look with

  1272. me at

  1273. verses 8

  1274. to 11.

  1275. Actually,

  1276. before we

  1277. get into

  1278. this,

  1279. I'll just

  1280. say this.

  1281. As is the

  1282. case with

  1283. this opening

  1284. bit,

  1285. there's a

  1286. lot that we

  1287. could draw

  1288. from this

  1289. next section

  1290. looking at

  1291. the implications

  1292. of the

  1293. gospel.

  1294. We'll look

  1295. at three

  1296. implications

  1297. of the

  1298. gospel.

  1299. Now look

  1300. with me at

  1301. verses 8

  1302. to 11.

  1303. First,

  1304. I thank

  1305. my God

  1306. through Jesus

  1307. Christ for

  1308. all of

  1309. you.

  1310. Because your

  1311. faith is

  1312. proclaimed in

  1313. all the

  1314. world,

  1315. for God

  1316. is my

  1317. witness,

  1318. whom I

  1319. serve with

  1320. my spirit

  1321. in the

  1322. gospel of

  1323. his son,

  1324. that without

  1325. ceasing I

  1326. mention you

  1327. always in

  1328. my prayers,

  1329. asking that

  1330. somehow by

  1331. God's will I

  1332. may now at

  1333. last succeed

  1334. in coming to

  1335. you.

  1336. For I

  1337. long to

  1338. see you.

  1339. And now we

  1340. start to see

  1341. that the

  1342. apostle,

  1343. he's not met

  1344. these people,

  1345. but he loves

  1346. these people.

  1347. For I

  1348. long to

  1349. see you that

  1350. I may impart

  1351. to you some

  1352. spiritual gift

  1353. to strengthen

  1354. you.

  1355. And we'll

  1356. pause here.

  1357. Again,

  1358. much to draw

  1359. from these

  1360. verses,

  1361. but three

  1362. brief implications

  1363. of the

  1364. gospel.

  1365. First is that

  1366. the gospel

  1367. will result

  1368. in you

  1369. praying more.

  1370. The gospel

  1371. will make you

  1372. prayerful.

  1373. And we see

  1374. this in verses

  1375. 8 to 11.

  1376. As the gospel

  1377. begins to

  1378. shape you,

  1379. you will

  1380. realize your

  1381. ongoing need

  1382. for God's

  1383. grace and

  1384. power in

  1385. your life.

  1386. You'll become

  1387. humble.

  1388. humble.

  1389. And when

  1390. people become

  1391. humble,

  1392. what ends

  1393. up happening

  1394. is that the

  1395. delusional

  1396. thoughts and

  1397. tendencies begin

  1398. to disappear.

  1399. What do I

  1400. mean by that?

  1401. We can be

  1402. awfully delusional

  1403. about our

  1404. ability to fix

  1405. ourselves or

  1406. the situations

  1407. around us.

  1408. Such things

  1409. are beyond

  1410. our ability

  1411. to fix,

  1412. and yet somehow

  1413. we think that

  1414. if we only have

  1415. this conversation

  1416. with this

  1417. person,

  1418. or we're

  1419. able to

  1420. tweak this

  1421. relationship

  1422. or incorporate

  1423. this aspect

  1424. of a healthy

  1425. lifestyle,

  1426. then we will

  1427. remedy the

  1428. problems that

  1429. we face.

  1430. So,

  1431. example for

  1432. me.

  1433. I had a

  1434. difficult

  1435. situation a

  1436. couple weeks

  1437. ago with

  1438. somebody close

  1439. to me,

  1440. and in

  1441. my mind,

  1442. for hours,

  1443. on and off,

  1444. throughout the

  1445. days,

  1446. and I'm not

  1447. exaggerating,

  1448. I promise

  1449. you,

  1450. okay?

  1451. I'm thinking

  1452. about,

  1453. I'm conspiring

  1454. about how

  1455. to fix

  1456. this,

  1457. okay?

  1458. How to say

  1459. it in such

  1460. a way that

  1461. it's going

  1462. to be heard,

  1463. how to tweak

  1464. the situation

  1465. with this one

  1466. person because

  1467. it's eating

  1468. me up,

  1469. until I

  1470. realized,

  1471. okay,

  1472. that I was

  1473. delusional.

  1474. And then

  1475. realizing that

  1476. this situation

  1477. is far bigger

  1478. than I can

  1479. handle,

  1480. and then I

  1481. realized,

  1482. oh wait,

  1483. I have a

  1484. God that

  1485. conquered

  1486. death.

  1487. Maybe if I

  1488. pray to him,

  1489. he can help

  1490. me.

  1491. And maybe he

  1492. will,

  1493. maybe he

  1494. won't in

  1495. his timing,

  1496. in his way,

  1497. that will be

  1498. satisfactory to

  1499. me,

  1500. but clearly

  1501. whatever he

  1502. decides to do

  1503. will be better

  1504. than what I

  1505. can do in

  1506. my own

  1507. strength.

  1508. And this is

  1509. what happens

  1510. with the

  1511. gospel.

  1512. We become

  1513. humble,

  1514. okay?

  1515. I'm not saying

  1516. I'm like a

  1517. super humble

  1518. person.

  1519. I'm using it

  1520. as an

  1521. example,

  1522. okay?

  1523. But

  1524. nevertheless,

  1525. we become

  1526. humble people

  1527. and we

  1528. realize that

  1529. we can be

  1530. awfully delusional.

  1531. So,

  1532. with the

  1533. gospel,

  1534. we see our

  1535. great need

  1536. for God's

  1537. grace and

  1538. power in

  1539. our daily

  1540. lives and

  1541. we desire

  1542. the same

  1543. for others.

  1544. So what

  1545. do we do?

  1546. We call

  1547. upon the

  1548. name of

  1549. God

  1550. to help.

  1551. Second

  1552. implication,

  1553. the need

  1554. for godly

  1555. Christian

  1556. community.

  1557. Read

  1558. verse 11

  1559. and 12

  1560. with me.

  1561. We've read

  1562. verse 11,

  1563. but we'll

  1564. read it

  1565. again.

  1566. For I

  1567. long to

  1568. see you

  1569. that I

  1570. may impart

  1571. to you

  1572. some

  1573. spiritual

  1574. gift to

  1575. strengthen

  1576. you.

  1577. That is,

  1578. that we

  1579. may be

  1580. mutually

  1581. encouraged

  1582. by each

  1583. other's

  1584. faith,

  1585. both

  1586. yours

  1587. and mine.

  1588. The

  1589. Christian

  1590. faith is

  1591. a communal

  1592. faith.

  1593. Often,

  1594. the Lord

  1595. ministers to

  1596. us through

  1597. the godly

  1598. encouragement

  1599. and exhortation

  1600. of others.

  1601. And it's

  1602. even true for

  1603. the apostles

  1604. themselves.

  1605. So listen,

  1606. the apostle

  1607. Paul comes

  1608. to this

  1609. church in

  1610. Rome.

  1611. They are

  1612. doing a lot

  1613. of good

  1614. things well.

  1615. He's talked

  1616. about how

  1617. their faith

  1618. is known

  1619. across the

  1620. Christian

  1621. world.

  1622. But nevertheless,

  1623. there are people

  1624. that need

  1625. a very long

  1626. letter to help

  1627. them navigate

  1628. some difficult

  1629. situations.

  1630. And yet,

  1631. he says,

  1632. listen,

  1633. I want to

  1634. come here,

  1635. I want to

  1636. strengthen

  1637. you,

  1638. but I

  1639. need you

  1640. to strengthen

  1641. me.

  1642. What does

  1643. the apostle

  1644. Paul need

  1645. strengthening

  1646. for from

  1647. them?

  1648. And yet,

  1649. that's what

  1650. he says.

  1651. I think

  1652. as we pray

  1653. and ask

  1654. the Lord's

  1655. intervention

  1656. into our

  1657. lives,

  1658. we will

  1659. find that

  1660. it will

  1661. come by

  1662. the people

  1663. sitting around

  1664. you in

  1665. this room.

  1666. In fact,

  1667. I would be so

  1668. bold to say

  1669. that you can't

  1670. be a Christian

  1671. if you are not

  1672. connected to a

  1673. local church.

  1674. Like,

  1675. you can't be.

  1676. if there's a

  1677. season,

  1678. for whatever

  1679. reason,

  1680. you're not

  1681. in church,

  1682. you don't

  1683. necessarily

  1684. cease to be

  1685. a Christian,

  1686. get back to

  1687. church.

  1688. I mean,

  1689. you guys are

  1690. all here,

  1691. so I'm not

  1692. really speaking

  1693. to anybody

  1694. who needs

  1695. to hear it.

  1696. Nevertheless,

  1697. to be a

  1698. Christian and

  1699. completely severed

  1700. from the

  1701. church is not

  1702. to be a

  1703. Christian.

  1704. Christian.

  1705. The third

  1706. century church

  1707. father,

  1708. Cyprian of

  1709. Carthage,

  1710. says,

  1711. and there's

  1712. a lot to

  1713. this statement,

  1714. but I think

  1715. it helps us

  1716. to understand

  1717. this implication

  1718. of the gospel

  1719. that no one

  1720. can have God

  1721. for his father

  1722. who does not

  1723. have the church

  1724. for his mother.

  1725. Which is to

  1726. say,

  1727. this is God's

  1728. plan for your

  1729. growth and

  1730. for your

  1731. spiritual welfare.

  1732. The third

  1733. implication of the

  1734. gospel,

  1735. you will share

  1736. the faith,

  1737. evangelism,

  1738. evangelism will

  1739. become a

  1740. part of your

  1741. life.

  1742. Read with me

  1743. verses 13 to

  1744. the end of our

  1745. section to

  1746. verse 15.

  1747. I do not want

  1748. you to be

  1749. unaware,

  1750. brothers and

  1751. sisters,

  1752. that I have

  1753. often intended

  1754. to come to

  1755. you,

  1756. but thus far

  1757. have been

  1758. prevented.

  1759. In order that

  1760. I may reap

  1761. some harvest

  1762. among you as

  1763. well as among

  1764. the rest of

  1765. the Gentiles,

  1766. I am under

  1767. obligation both

  1768. to Greeks

  1769. and to

  1770. barbarians,

  1771. that is,

  1772. non-Greeks,

  1773. both to the

  1774. wise and to

  1775. the foolish,

  1776. so I am

  1777. eager to preach

  1778. the gospel to

  1779. you also who

  1780. are in.

  1781. Rome.

  1782. Yes,

  1783. the apostle Paul

  1784. had a very

  1785. unique calling

  1786. as an apostle

  1787. to proclaim

  1788. the gospel to

  1789. a portion of

  1790. a world that

  1791. had never heard

  1792. of Jesus Christ

  1793. before,

  1794. a very unique

  1795. calling.

  1796. However,

  1797. what is not

  1798. unique about

  1799. the apostle

  1800. is his

  1801. obligation to

  1802. evangelize.

  1803. What do I mean

  1804. by this?

  1805. Verse 14,

  1806. it says this,

  1807. I am under

  1808. obligation both

  1809. to Greeks and

  1810. to barbarians,

  1811. obligation to

  1812. preach the

  1813. gospel.

  1814. I don't like

  1815. that,

  1816. I don't like

  1817. being obliged

  1818. to do

  1819. anything,

  1820. so maybe a

  1821. better reading

  1822. and some of

  1823. the commentaries

  1824. I looked at,

  1825. they would say

  1826. actually there is

  1827. a better reading

  1828. and that is to

  1829. be a debtor,

  1830. well that doesn't

  1831. help much either

  1832. because I don't

  1833. want to be in

  1834. debt to

  1835. anybody.

  1836. So what is

  1837. the apostle Paul

  1838. trying to

  1839. communicate to

  1840. us?

  1841. So I think

  1842. it's helpful

  1843. to consider

  1844. this debtor

  1845. language and

  1846. we can

  1847. understand debt

  1848. as two

  1849. different things.

  1850. The first,

  1851. you take a

  1852. business loan,

  1853. you take a

  1854. mortgage,

  1855. whatever,

  1856. you're in debt

  1857. to the bank

  1858. until you pay

  1859. back every cent

  1860. and they're

  1861. coming for

  1862. that every cent.

  1863. The second

  1864. way is that

  1865. somebody entrusts

  1866. you with

  1867. some form of

  1868. money or an

  1869. object for

  1870. you to give

  1871. to somebody

  1872. else.

  1873. I don't know

  1874. if this happens

  1875. too much in

  1876. our day but

  1877. it would be a

  1878. very common

  1879. thing in the

  1880. ancient world.

  1881. You then become

  1882. a debtor until

  1883. you have handed

  1884. over that

  1885. message, that

  1886. item, that

  1887. sum of money

  1888. to the person

  1889. it was intended

  1890. for.

  1891. So likewise

  1892. with the gospel

  1893. we have been

  1894. given this

  1895. enormous sum

  1896. and I think

  1897. by the way

  1898. it's the second

  1899. one that is

  1900. very helpful

  1901. for us.

  1902. So likewise

  1903. with the gospel

  1904. we have been

  1905. given an

  1906. enormous sum

  1907. freely and

  1908. lavishly by

  1909. God.

  1910. He has given

  1911. us salvation.

  1912. He has given

  1913. us his very

  1914. son.

  1915. And Paul is

  1916. saying here

  1917. that it is not

  1918. just a prize

  1919. or a gift

  1920. for us

  1921. to hold

  1922. and to

  1923. cherish

  1924. but the

  1925. way to

  1926. truly cherish

  1927. the gospel

  1928. to truly

  1929. cherish

  1930. Christ

  1931. is to

  1932. continue

  1933. sharing him

  1934. with others.

  1935. It's an

  1936. ongoing debt

  1937. that we owe

  1938. to all whom

  1939. the Lord

  1940. desires to

  1941. call to

  1942. himself

  1943. that we

  1944. are connected

  1945. to.

  1946. Now

  1947. that freaks

  1948. you out

  1949. it's okay

  1950. consider

  1951. verse 15

  1952. so I am

  1953. eager to

  1954. preach the

  1955. gospel to

  1956. you also

  1957. who are in

  1958. Rome.

  1959. Paul is

  1960. not saying

  1961. listen you

  1962. are heavy

  1963. laden with

  1964. a debt to

  1965. evangelize

  1966. suck it

  1967. up.

  1968. He is

  1969. communicating

  1970. immediately

  1971. after that

  1972. he is eager

  1973. that he is

  1974. excited

  1975. that he is

  1976. joyful

  1977. to do so.

  1978. Listen to

  1979. struggle with

  1980. sharing our

  1981. faith is a

  1982. real thing

  1983. but again

  1984. circling back

  1985. to prayer

  1986. and the

  1987. community

  1988. that you're

  1989. a part of

  1990. is to

  1991. rightly

  1992. understand

  1993. that you

  1994. can't do

  1995. this by

  1996. yourself.

  1997. Again

  1998. this is an

  1999. implication

  2000. of the

  2001. gospel

  2002. but not

  2003. for you

  2004. solo

  2005. but for

  2006. you to

  2007. look to

  2008. others

  2009. for strength

  2010. and pointers

  2011. and that

  2012. includes reading

  2013. biographies

  2014. and church

  2015. history

  2016. and digging

  2017. into the

  2018. scriptures

  2019. and asking

  2020. the Lord

  2021. for help

  2022. but nevertheless

  2023. this is our

  2024. calling

  2025. this is

  2026. gospel

  2027. implication.

  2028. I think it

  2029. starts at

  2030. home.

  2031. I think it

  2032. starts among

  2033. us.

  2034. Notice how

  2035. Paul is

  2036. very clear

  2037. that in

  2038. verse 13

  2039. that he

  2040. is hoping

  2041. to reap

  2042. a harvest

  2043. among you

  2044. as well

  2045. as among

  2046. the rest

  2047. of the

  2048. Gentiles.

  2049. Verse 15

  2050. he is eager

  2051. to preach

  2052. the gospel

  2053. to you

  2054. who are

  2055. in Rome.

  2056. Paul is

  2057. trying to

  2058. preach the

  2059. gospel

  2060. to Christians

  2061. not because

  2062. he thinks

  2063. that they

  2064. need to

  2065. get saved

  2066. every day

  2067. or every

  2068. moment

  2069. but rather

  2070. the gospel

  2071. is something

  2072. for the

  2073. unbelieving

  2074. world

  2075. but also

  2076. for us

  2077. so start

  2078. at home.

  2079. Start in

  2080. your home.

  2081. Start with

  2082. your children

  2083. if you have

  2084. them,

  2085. with your

  2086. spouse

  2087. if you

  2088. have one,

  2089. with parents

  2090. or friends,

  2091. with fellow

  2092. believers here.

  2093. It doesn't

  2094. mean hey let

  2095. me tell you

  2096. about the

  2097. bridge analogy.

  2098. You know you

  2099. hand somebody

  2100. a track here

  2101. on a Sunday

  2102. but it's

  2103. saying listen

  2104. the Lord has

  2105. blessed me

  2106. this week.

  2107. Let me tell

  2108. you how it

  2109. happened.

  2110. Or I was

  2111. just thinking

  2112. through this

  2113. implication of

  2114. what it means

  2115. to live

  2116. according to

  2117. the gospel

  2118. in Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  2119. chapter 1.

  2120. this is what

  2121. the Lord

  2122. spoke to

  2123. me or

  2124. gave me

  2125. an insight

  2126. about.

  2127. And all

  2128. of a sudden

  2129. we begin

  2130. to talk

  2131. about the

  2132. Lord.

  2133. We begin

  2134. to talk

  2135. about Christ

  2136. and that

  2137. becomes

  2138. the next

  2139. thing after

  2140. small talk.

  2141. It also

  2142. is my

  2143. job to

  2144. help equip

  2145. us to

  2146. feel confident

  2147. to share

  2148. the gospel

  2149. to rightly

  2150. understand it

  2151. and your

  2152. job to

  2153. dig deep

  2154. and to not

  2155. give into

  2156. feelings of

  2157. apathy or

  2158. fear.

  2159. in some

  2160. there's more

  2161. implications

  2162. but in some

  2163. these three

  2164. applications

  2165. in some

  2166. the implication

  2167. of the

  2168. gospel is

  2169. that you

  2170. will be

  2171. formed and

  2172. shaped into

  2173. the likeness

  2174. of Christ.

  2175. You'll

  2176. become an

  2177. imitator of

  2178. him and

  2179. participate in

  2180. the life and

  2181. ministry of

  2182. Jesus himself.

  2183. Let's close

  2184. with this.

  2185. In Matthew

  2186. 13 Jesus

  2187. tells two

  2188. parables.

  2189. They're back

  2190. to back.

  2191. They're super

  2192. short.

  2193. One is about

  2194. a man who

  2195. finds a

  2196. treasure in

  2197. a field.

  2198. Another is

  2199. about a

  2200. merchant who

  2201. seeks an

  2202. expensive

  2203. pearl.

  2204. In both

  2205. cases these

  2206. men upon

  2207. finding the

  2208. treasure and

  2209. the pearl they

  2210. sell everything

  2211. they have to

  2212. acquire them.

  2213. Everything.

  2214. It seems

  2215. crazy.

  2216. It seems

  2217. crazy.

  2218. But Jesus

  2219. tells this

  2220. parable to

  2221. help us see

  2222. that the

  2223. gospel isn't

  2224. just a nice

  2225. add-on to

  2226. our life that

  2227. kind of makes

  2228. things a bit

  2229. more cheery or

  2230. guarantees us a

  2231. place in the

  2232. world to

  2233. come and

  2234. we kind

  2235. of have

  2236. that taken

  2237. care of.

  2238. We move

  2239. on with

  2240. life.

  2241. It's

  2242. something that

  2243. is to be

  2244. all-encompassing,

  2245. something that

  2246. should bring us

  2247. great joy and

  2248. excitement.

  2249. Nevertheless,

  2250. for those who

  2251. hear the gospel

  2252. and are excited

  2253. by it,

  2254. who feel like,

  2255. yes, there's this

  2256. treasure in a

  2257. field or yes,

  2258. there's this

  2259. pearl that I

  2260. have found,

  2261. yet I'm kind

  2262. of afraid of

  2263. throwing it all

  2264. into one

  2265. basket or to

  2266. put all my

  2267. eggs into one

  2268. basket.

  2269. The cost is

  2270. too much.

  2271. The implications

  2272. are too

  2273. life-changing.

  2274. I want to say

  2275. I hear you.

  2276. And yet, on

  2277. the same time,

  2278. I do not want

  2279. to diminish

  2280. those two

  2281. parables because

  2282. they are beautiful

  2283. and they, at the

  2284. same time, are

  2285. jarring.

  2286. The implications

  2287. and cost of the

  2288. gospel, they are

  2289. great, but

  2290. friends, let me

  2291. assure you that

  2292. there is no

  2293. better life than

  2294. knowing God and

  2295. being known by

  2296. him because of

  2297. what his son has

  2298. done on the

  2299. cross of Calvary.

  2300. I can, and

  2301. maybe this is me

  2302. sharing the gospel

  2303. with you guys, and

  2304. maybe after the

  2305. service you can do

  2306. the same to one

  2307. another.

  2308. God has never

  2309. left me or

  2310. forsook me.

  2311. Okay?

  2312. The times where I

  2313. think the cost is

  2314. too much, here I

  2315. am.

  2316. Maybe you guys

  2317. have a similar

  2318. testimony.

  2319. Okay?

  2320. Maybe you have

  2321. gone through a

  2322. really difficult

  2323. season and you're

  2324. thinking the cost is

  2325. too much to trust

  2326. God for the

  2327. everyday of my

  2328. life, and yet you

  2329. are still here.

  2330. He has never left

  2331. you or forsaken

  2332. you.

  2333. Okay?

  2334. This is the gospel

  2335. proclaimed to you

  2336. this morning from me,

  2337. but proclaim it to

  2338. one another.

  2339. And friends, if you

  2340. have that treasure in

  2341. the field, if you

  2342. see that pearl, sell

  2343. everything you have

  2344. and buy it.

  2345. The cost of the

  2346. field, the price of

  2347. the pearl, it is

  2348. worth it.

  2349. And remember, you're

  2350. not alone.

2351. We get to do this

  2352. together.

  2353. As we go through

  2354. Romans these next

  2355. few weeks, this is

  2356. my prayer for our

  2357. time in this

  2358. wonderful epistle.

  2359. That we would grow

  2360. into this gospel

  2361. reality together.

  2362. That we would bless

  2363. and encourage one

  2364. another.

  2365. Yes, by meals and

  2366. nice words and kind

  2367. gestures and acts of

  2368. service, very

  2369. important.

  2370. But above all, by

  2371. proclaiming the gospel

  2372. to one another.

  2373. And growing in our

  2374. ability and strength

  2375. to proclaim the

  2376. gospel to the world

  2377. we live in.

  2378. For the good news

  2379. is that God has

  2380. loved us.

  2381. And he has

  2382. demonstrated his

  2383. love in us, to

  2384. us, in his

  2385. blessed son.

  2386. Amen.

  2387. Amen.
