  1. Bit of an opening. Spielberg's Catch Me If You Can.

  2. ! Very fun movie.

  3. Over 20 years old now, interestingly.

  4. ! Main character in this movie, Frank Abagnale Jr.

  5. ! He's played by Leo DiCaprio.

  6. He begins a life of crime and deception,

  7. in part, to fix his parents' broken marriage

  8. and regain his father's lost honor.

  9. He idolized his father,

  10. and his father was on this descent,

  11. and his, again, in part,

  12. his purpose for his life of crime,

  13. stealing money, was to restore his father's honor.

  14. And while giving an acceptance speech,

  15. while accepting a prestigious award from his Rotary Club,

  16. Frank Abagnale Jr.'s father, Frank Abagnale Sr.,

  17. tells a story, and the story goes something like this.

  18. He gets up, and he goes,

  19. two mice fell into a barrel of cream,

  20. and the first one struggled and quickly gave up and drowned.

  21. But the second one struggled and swam and struggled and swam

  22. and turned that cream into butter and then climbed out.

  23. And then he says to this audience of his peers,

  24. I am that second mouse.

  25. And that, interestingly,

  26. that line, that image,

  27. follows Frank Jr. all the way through the story.

  28. So, he tries to give his father money after he steals a fortune,

  29. and his father,

  30. you know,

  31. who is now, you know,

  32. descending into poverty,

  33. he says to his son,

  34. which mouse am I?

  35. And then his son kind of transforms back into that lowly 14-year-old boy,

  36. and he says,

  37. well, you're the second mouse.

  38. He goes,

  39. what do I need your money for?

  40. It's a very interesting story,

  41. an interesting analogy,

  42. because I think what it does is it highlights something that,

  43. in a movie, of course,

  44. it's really exaggerated,

  45. but it's something that is found in all of us,

  46. that we have a hard time accepting help or receiving charity.

  47. It's difficult for us.

  48. So, maybe you're not as proud as Frank Sr. from the film,

  49. but I would venture a guess that almost everybody here has a difficult,

  50. maybe I'll put it this way,

  51. would rather give charity than accept it.

  52. Maybe receiving charity would give you a feeling of discomfort.

  53. It would maybe even offend you.

  54. We can feel that such help or charity is actually an affront to our dignity.

  55. And for some here, like I've mentioned,

  56. the shame or offense of receiving charity means we will never really accept it.

  57. Our text today will touch on this very issue.

  58. Romans chapter 1, verses 16 and 17.

    Romans 1:16

  59. And make it clear that such a mindset is actually

  60. not just a weird character quirk,

  61. but something that will inhibit us

  62. from receiving saving faith from God himself.

  63. So as we open Romans chapter 1, verses 16 to 17,

    Romans 1:16–17

  64. we're going to take our time through it.

  65. And we're focusing on these two verses

  66. because Romans 16 and 17 are really like the thesis statement

  67. of the entire book of Romans.

  68. So we're going to take some time and really understand it.

  69. But as we open to Romans chapter 1, 16 and 17,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  70. we'll look at God's power,

  71. we'll look at God's righteousness,

  72. and then how to properly respond to both.

  73. And I hope and pray that in doing so,

  74. we can better understand our deep need to feel dignified,

  75. which I think is a real need that we have,

  76. and how the gospel of God helps us in ways

  77. that are both uncomfortable but deeply needed.

  78. So, if you're following along in the scripture journals,

  79. page 8, verse 16, point 1, God's power.

  80. And I'll read it for us.

  81. For I am not ashamed of the gospel,

  82. for it is a power of God for salvation

  83. to everyone who believes to the Jew first

  84. and also to the Greek.

  85. The gospel is God's power to save sinners.

  86. It's displayed in Christ for all people

  87. to the Jew first and to the Greek.

  88. And the Jew first and the Greek,

  89. it's a very interesting thing to explore.

  90. We're not going to explore it today.

  91. It'll come up throughout our time in Romans.

  92. But I'll just have a quick side note

  93. that Paul is,

  94. he'll constantly refer to the Jews

  95. and their priority in proclaiming the gospel

  96. primarily for two reasons.

  97. Number one, because this is the combination

  98. of the promises made to the Jewish people

  99. in the Old Testament,

  100. but also because Jesus himself was a Jew.

  101. That's all I'm going to say.

  102. If you have any questions,

  103. you can talk to me about it afterwards.

  104. I don't want to get too sidetracked,

  105. but I wanted to bring your attention to that.

  106. Again, we'll discuss this in weeks to come.

  107. Nevertheless, it is God's power,

  108. the gospel is God's power,

  109. to save sinners displayed in Christ for all people.

  110. It says a lot about God,

  111. his willingness to exercise his power to save.

  112. He did not have to.

  113. Instead, God saves out of an act of love.

  114. And we'll see in this next point

  115. that it is actually an expression of his very character,

  116. of his righteousness.

  117. But for us,

  118. I think it is,

  119. it reveals a great amount

  120. about who we are as human beings.

  121. And very specifically,

  122. that we are sinful

  123. and wicked and corrupt.

  124. It tells us that

  125. we are not actually inherently good,

  126. but there's something,

  127. again,

  128. again,

  129. bent or corrupted

  130. about us.

  131. Put it in

  132. very stark terms,

  133. we are spiritual failures.

  134. Why?

  135. Because we are unable

  136. to use religion

  137. or spirituality

  138. to achieve

  139. our salvation.

  140. It tells us that

  141. our wickedness

  142. is far worse

  143. than we would have

  144. ever imagined,

  145. for it requires

  146. the highest sacrifice

  147. to atone for such evil,

  148. namely,

  149. the Son of God

  150. dying on our behalf

  151. on the cross.

  152. And what it truly tells us

  153. is that

  154. all our pride

  155. in being completely put together,

  156. ultimately dignified,

  157. is nothing more

  158. than deluded self-righteousness

  159. and self-indulgence.

  160. And it's a heavy thing to say,

  161. and I would prefer

  162. to sugarcoat it

  163. in some ways,

  164. but

  165. I think the fact

  166. that God

  167. is going to save

  168. speaks,

  169. of course,

  170. to who God is,

  171. but also to

  172. the calamity

  173. that is

  174. the human experience.

  175. And this

  176. is where the shame

  177. and offense

  178. come in

  179. because

  180. our dignity

  181. is offended.

  182. The prideful heart

  183. responds to the gospel,

  184. not with a,

  185. yes,

  186. I'm a spiritual failure,

  187. yes,

  188. I need your help.

  189. It responds,

  190. I'm that first,

  191. or I'm that second mouse.

  192. who are you

  193. to tell me

  194. what I need,

  195. that I am bad,

  196. or that I am weak,

  197. or that I am a failure,

  198. or that my way

  199. of salvation

  200. is a false way,

  201. or that true salvation

  202. isn't about my happiness.

  203. Who are you,

  204. God,

  205. to tell me

  206. what I need?

  207. And it sounds

  208. potentially silly

  209. to put it that way,

  210. but this is

  211. the nature

  212. of a deluded mind

  213. that is

  214. self-righteous

  215. and self-indulgent.

  216. In addition to that,

  217. it says that

  218. we cannot lean

  219. on our own pedigree

  220. or achievements

  221. to give us

  222. preferential treatment

  223. for salvation

  224. because salvation

  225. is for everyone.

  226. So you see,

  227. again,

  228. going back to

  229. Catch Me If You Can,

  230. Frank Sr.,

  231. he is so dignified,

  232. what made him

  233. so dignified

  234. was his admittance

  235. to this inner circle

  236. of the New Rochelle

  237. Rotary Club.

  238. But if the inner circle

  239. is open to everyone,

  240. it no longer is

  241. a special place.

  242. Feeling special

  243. is always in relation

  244. to the status

  245. of others,

  246. and the Gospel

  247. is making it

  248. very clear

  249. that because it is

  250. offered to everyone,

  251. everyone is

  252. in the same position.

  253. There is no

  254. special person.

  255. The Gospel

  256. then insults

  257. our desire

  258. to be set apart

  259. from the peasants.

  260. It tells us

  261. that we are a peasant.

  262. And that is

  263. precisely what is

  264. so, again,

  265. offensive about the Gospel

  266. because it undermines

  267. this delusional

  268. self-righteousness

  269. and self-importance.

  270. It tells us

  271. that we are not

  272. special at all

  273. for we all

  274. need saving.

  275. And yet,

  276. and this is the

  277. beautiful part,

  278. and this is why

  279. the Gospel

  280. on one hand

  281. is such a

  282. beautiful picture

  283. of God's grace

  284. and love,

  285. but it seems

  286. almost comical

  287. because although

  288. it says that we

  289. are not special

  290. at all,

  291. on one hand,

  292. we are actually

  293. so special

  294. that God

  295. has chosen

  296. to save us.

  297. So what does

  298. the Gospel

  299. do that can

  300. both reveal

  301. our self-delusion

  302. and rescue us

  303. from it?

  304. And this brings us

  305. to our second point,

  306. God's righteousness

  307. that is revealed.

  308. Look with me

  309. at verse 17.

  310. For in it,

  311. that is the Gospel,

  312. the righteousness

  313. of God

  314. is revealed

  315. from faith

  316. for faith,

  317. as it is written,

  318. the righteous

  319. shall live

  320. by faith.

  321. This one verse

  322. is both crucial

  323. to the rest

  324. of the letter

  325. and historically

  326. very difficult

  327. to interpret,

  328. but the big questions

  329. are what does

  330. Paul mean

  331. when he speaks

  332. about the righteousness

  333. of God?

  334. What does he mean

  335. when he says

  336. from faith to faith

  337. that the righteous

  338. shall live by faith?

  339. It's a really,

  340. it's a really good question,

  341. it's an important question,

  342. and it's a question

  343. that we need to answer.

  344. Again,

  345. because this is the thesis

  346. of the entire book,

  347. but also,

  348. out of all of Paul's writing,

  349. so he has written,

  350. in the New Testament,

  351. there's a number

  352. of books written by Paul.

  353. There are letters

  354. written to specific churches,

  355. but then there's

  356. general letters

  357. written to the

  358. to people,

  359. but they're called

  360. the general epistles.

  361. In all of Paul's writings

  362. outside of Romans,

  363. he talks about righteousness

  364. something like 69 times.

  365. In Romans alone,

  366. he speaks of righteousness

  367. 77 times, okay?

  368. So it's important for us

  369. to get a good handle

  370. as best as we can

  371. so that we can read Romans

  372. with some clarity.

  373. So let's walk through this verse,

  374. verse 17,

  375. and attempt to answer

  376. these questions.

  377. So,

  378. what is the righteousness

  379. of God?

  380. And I'll just say,

  381. I'm indebted to

  382. the late John Stott

  383. for providing these

  384. three possible options

  385. or understandings

  386. of what this righteousness

  387. could be.

  388. The first,

  389. that the righteousness

  390. of God describes

  391. God's quality and character.

  392. It is who he is.

  393. God is himself righteous.

  394. He hates wickedness.

  395. He hates sin.

  396. He hates evil.

  397. He hates death.

  398. He hates decay.

  399. Conversely,

  400. he loves what we would call

  401. the fruits of the Spirit.

  402. Love and joy and peace

  403. and patience and kindness

  404. and goodness and faithfulness,

  405. gentleness and self-control.

  406. He hates evil.

  407. He loves good.

  408. This is what God is all about.

  409. He himself is righteous.

  410. And a part of that righteousness

  411. is that God judges justly

  412. wickedness.

  413. And that justice,

  414. that just judgment

  415. is an expression

  416. of his character.

  417. Therefore,

  418. at the cross of Christ,

  419. God's just judgment

  420. and perfect righteousness

  421. are supremely revealed.

  422. So, therefore,

  423. the righteousness of God,

  424. his very character,

  425. is fully displayed

  426. in his acts of salvation

  427. and judgment

  428. in the gospel

  429. God is committed

  430. to his own righteous nature,

  431. which is to say that

  432. he cannot deny himself.

  433. So, the gospel is

  434. God's character

  435. on full display

  436. and he cannot not

  437. be righteous.

  438. Option one.

  439. Second option

  440. is that God's righteousness

  441. describes his activity.

  442. So, if the first option

  443. is his character,

  444. the second option

  445. is his activity.

  446. It is what he does.

  447. God has made promises

  448. in the scriptures.

  449. He has made covenantal promises

  450. throughout history

  451. that he keeps

  452. beyond

  453. all hope.

  454. He will keep his promises

  455. because he is all-powerful

  456. and, therefore,

  457. his activity

  458. in fulfilling them

  459. cannot be undone

  460. or thwarted.

  461. The Lord acts righteously

  462. when he fulfills

  463. his promises,

  464. overthrowing evil,

  465. saving his people.

  466. It's what God does.

  467. That is option two.

  468. Now, the final

  469. and third option

  470. describes the status

  471. that God confers

  472. upon those he saves.

  473. If the first

  474. is who God is,

  475. the second

  476. is his activity,

  477. the third

  478. is what he achieves.

  479. In this final view,

  480. God gives us

  481. his righteousness.

  482. It is a status

  483. that is alien to us

  484. but is who God is

  485. and how does he do it?

  486. By laying on Christ

  487. our sin,

  488. our brokenness,

  489. our wickedness,

  490. which deserves

  491. his just judgment

  492. and instead

  493. of rightly punishing us,

  494. Jesus takes on

  495. our punishment

  496. in our place

  497. and pays our penalty.

  498. But not just that,

  499. okay,

  500. because it's great

  501. to not be in

  502. the red anymore

  503. but when you're at zero,

  504. I mean,

  505. that's,

  506. I mean,

  507. at least you're not

  508. in the red

  509. but what we have here

  510. is that

  511. then he gives us

  512. his righteous status

  513. so that we are

  514. in the black

  515. in an infinite

  516. type of way.

  517. Because of this status

  518. given to us

  519. as an act of love

  520. and grace

  521. and received by us

  522. through faith

  523. and we're going to

  524. touch on that faith bit

  525. in the third point,

  526. we have a certain hope

  527. that we can stand

  528. before a righteous God

  529. not just be unmade

  530. and this is from

  531. the scriptures

  532. that nobody can

  533. stand before God

  534. and live

  535. but that we can

  536. in Christ

  537. stand before God

  538. being in his presence

  539. and that we can

  540. enjoy his presence

  541. and fellowship forever.

  542. The scripture talks

  543. about being clothed

  544. in the righteousness

  545. of Christ

  546. or given the status

  547. of Christ's righteousness

  548. something that we need

  549. and strive after

  550. but we constantly

  551. fail to achieve.

  552. It is an alien status

  553. given to us.

  554. So,

  555. as a recap,

  556. okay,

  557. this is like heavy,

  558. thick theological things

  559. we can talk about it

  560. after if you need

  561. a bit more clarification

  562. but as a recap,

  563. the righteousness of God

  564. that Paul has in mind

  565. could describe

  566. either his divine character,

  567. his divine activity,

  568. or his divine achievements.

  569. Okay?

  570. So,

  571. which is it?

  572. I'll make the case

  573. today and throughout Romans

  574. that the great weight

  575. is given to the third option.

  576. That God,

  577. in his perfect justice

  578. and perfect mercy,

  579. he atones for our sins

  580. and wickedness

  581. by laying them

  582. onto Christ

  583. and giving,

  584. and Christ giving us

  585. his righteous status.

  586. Okay?

  587. Some theologians

  588. call it the great exchange.

  589. Our sin for his righteousness.

  590. 2 Corinthians 5

  591. says it this way,

  592. he who had no sin

  593. became our sin

  594. so that we could be

  595. the righteousness of God.

  596. This is primarily

  597. what the apostle

  598. will lay out

  599. in this letter.

  600. However,

  601. okay,

  602. however,

  603. to ignore God's

  604. divine character

  605. and activity

  606. I think is the key insight

  607. to help us understand

  608. what the righteousness

  609. of God

  610. that is being revealed

  611. in the gospel

  612. is all about.

  613. So I think,

  614. and I'm going to put forward

  615. to you today,

  616. that although the third option

  617. has,

  618. I would say,

  619. the most weight

  620. in terms of Paul's letter

  621. in Romans,

  622. all three aspects

  623. of this righteousness,

  624. God's character,

  625. activity,

  626. his achievement,

  627. should not be pitted

  628. against one another.

  629. They are complementary.

  630. I'll put it this way,

  631. how could God be faithful

  632. to his righteous promises

  633. if he was not

  634. himself righteous?

  635. How could those promises

  636. be fulfilled

  637. that he has made

  638. so that we could enjoy

  639. his presence forever

  640. if we did not share

  641. that righteousness?

  642. There's a lot of interplay

  643. happening here,

  644. okay?

  645. God's activity

  646. is an aspect

  647. of who he is

  648. and what he does

  649. in his activity

  650. is to give us

  651. his righteousness

  652. so that we could

  653. be redeemed,

  654. counted as worthy

  655. to be in his presence.

  656. So in a big way,

  657. we can't really have

  658. one without the other.

  659. However,

  660. for Paul,

  661. he is emphasizing

  662. the third option

  663. above the other two

  664. in his letter.

  665. So the predominant view

  666. presented in Romans

  667. is that the righteousness

  668. of God

  669. as revealed in the gospel

  670. is this incredible

  671. achievement of God

  672. through Christ.

  673. He is taking sinful,

  674. spoiled,

  675. corrupted humans,

  676. he is paying the penalty

  677. for their sin,

  678. not overlooking

  679. their transgressions,

  680. not overlooking

  681. our transgressions,

  682. our sins,

  683. but what he is doing

  684. is he is paying

  685. the penalty

  686. through Christ.

  687. No more red ink.

  688. And then giving us

  689. the very status

  690. of being the son

  691. so that it's not just

  692. we have no liabilities,

  693. but that we are himself,

  694. we are ourselves,

  695. in God's view,

  696. as righteous

  697. as Christ himself.

  698. And this will lead

  699. to our third point,

  700. because,

  701. because,

  702. with any gift,

  703. and friends,

  704. this is a gift,

  705. with any gift,

  706. we need to receive it rightly.

  707. And this leads

  708. to our third point,

  709. how we respond.

  710. And that response

  711. is by faith.

  712. So three times,

  713. three times in two verses,

  714. the Apostle Paul

  715. will speak of belief

  716. or faith.

  717. He'll say in verse 16,

  718. the power of God

  719. for salvation

  720. to everyone

  721. who believes.

  722. And then he'll say

  723. in verse 17,

  724. the righteousness of God

  725. is revealed

  726. from faith for faith.

  727. The righteous

  728. shall live by faith.

  729. faith.

  730. So,

  731. if the gospel

  732. is God's power

  733. to save,

  734. bestowing on us

  735. his righteous standing,

  736. his righteous status,

  737. then the means

  738. by which we receive

  739. this gift

  740. is faith.

  741. We are to believe

  742. in the gospel.

  743. Before we dive

  744. into belief,

  745. let us again consider

  746. not our own ability

  747. to believe,

  748. but first and foremost,

  749. the faithfulness

  750. of God,

  751. the trustworthiness

  752. of God.

  753. So I think

  754. before we consider

  755. a belief in God,

  756. a trust in God,

  757. a faith in God,

  758. we ought to ask

  759. the question,

  760. is God trustworthy?

  761. Is God worthy

  762. of our faith?

  763. Is God faithful

  764. to keep his promises?

  765. And the answer is yes.

  766. He is the one

  767. who keeps his promises.

  768. And we touched on this

  769. in the previous point

  770. where we said

  771. that God's righteousness

  772. is an expression

  773. of his very character.

  774. So therefore,

  775. when we ask the question,

  776. is God faithful?

  777. Is God trustworthy?

  778. We're really asking

  779. the question

  780. that has plagued humanity

  781. from the very beginning,

  782. what we've wrestled with

  783. from the very beginning.

  784. It's a very hot-button question.

  785. Is God who he says he is?

  786. Is he a trustworthy God?

  787. And I would just say

  788. to you now, okay,

  789. you might be feeling

  790. like your faith

  791. is at maybe

  792. a solid eight and a half

  793. out of ten, okay?

  794. You're feeling great

  795. about faith.

  796. Maybe you're

  797. kind of potentially

  798. cratering, right?

  799. You might be

  800. in a tough season

  801. where faith isn't

  802. really there.

  803. I think it's always

  804. an appropriate question

  805. to ask the Lord.

  806. Are you worthy

  807. of my trust?

  808. If you ask

  809. in the question

  810. with the heart

  811. of God,

  812. I believe,

  813. help my unbelief.

  814. There's another way

  815. to ask that question

  816. that isn't good.

  817. It is the way

  818. that the serpent

  819. asks the question

  820. in the opening chapters

  821. of Genesis.

  822. Did God really say that?

  823. Did he really say

  824. you couldn't eat

  825. of the apple?

  826. Is God really trustworthy?

  827. Which isn't so much

  828. a question,

  829. it's more of a statement.

  830. But I'll say to you,

  831. and this is actually,

  832. it's just an aside,

  833. it's not in my notes,

  834. it is an entirely

  835. appropriate question

  836. to ask God

  837. because God

  838. is strong enough

  839. to weather

  840. that kind of question.

  841. So ask that question

  842. prayerfully.

  843. So is God,

  844. is God faithful?

  845. Can we really trust

  846. that God will keep

  847. his promises

  848. to restore

  849. our dignity,

  850. to remake us,

  851. and to redeem us?

  852. And friends,

  853. the answer is yes.

  854. And it is on this basis

  855. that we believe.

  856. That is in part

  857. what Paul is referring to

  858. when he says

  859. from faith for faith

  860. because what he is saying,

  861. and again,

  862. this is why this is

  863. a very difficult section

  864. to interpret,

  865. but it would have

  866. kind of many facets to it,

  867. but this is what Paul

  868. is saying in part,

  869. that upon the faithfulness

  870. of God we base our faith.

  871. From faith for faith.

  872. From the faithfulness

  873. of God,

  874. that is what we,

  875. that's what we build

  876. our faith upon.

  877. But as it is multifaceted,

  878. there's more.

  879. For it would seem that

  880. by saying from faith

  881. for faith,

  882. Paul is also communicating

  883. that the faith

  884. we are to have in Christ

  885. is to increase in quality

  886. and quantity

  887. as we continue on

  888. in the Christian life.

  889. And by the way,

  890. I mean,

  891. I'm not trying to contradict

  892. what I previously said

  893. about having potentially seasons

  894. where faith isn't really there.

  895. You know,

  896. you zoom out,

  897. the line is going like this

  898. in terms of quantity

  899. and quality,

  900. but if you zoom in,

  901. it might be like this,

  902. okay?

  903. But Paul here

  904. is saying

  905. that faith in Christ

  906. ought to,

  907. for the Christian,

  908. increase in quality

  909. and quantity.

  910. It's to permeate our lives.

  911. And we can see this

  912. if we take a moment

  913. to understand this last line,

  914. the righteous

  915. shall live by faith.

  916. So this quotation

  917. is from the Old Testament

  918. from a minor prophet

  919. named Habakkuk.

  920. He was a prophet

  921. during the time

  922. that the Israelites

  923. were exiled

  924. out of the promised land

  925. into Babylon,

  926. which is modern-day Iraq,

  927. more or less.

  928. Without getting lost

  929. in the details

  930. in its original context,

  931. and in connection

  932. with our text today,

  933. it describes

  934. how the righteous

  935. live by faith

  936. and how they can hope

  937. to live through faith.

  938. So the emphasis here

  939. with this quotation

  940. and with our text

  941. is not so much

  942. about proving

  943. one's righteousness

  944. by the way they act,

  945. as if,

  946. I'm righteous,

  947. therefore I have faith,

  948. but on how sinners

  949. become saints

  950. by faith

  951. and how they continue

  952. to grow in their righteousness

  953. and trust in the Lord

  954. through faith.

  955. So from faith to faith

  956. or from faith for faith.

  957. If you remember last week,

  958. we talked about

  959. how the gospel

  960. is not simply

  961. the way into

  962. the Christian religion,

  963. but the very thing

  964. that continues

  965. to animate it.

  966. Therefore,

  967. faith must be

  968. continually fed

  969. and fostered

  970. because we are quick

  971. to either take pride

  972. in our own righteousness

  973. again

  974. or to be embarrassed

  975. or ashamed

  976. by the gospel,

  977. for we are slow

  978. to remember

  979. that it is the power

  980. of God for salvation

  981. and it's offensive

  982. to us

  983. and our sensibilities.

  984. So therefore,

  985. faith and belief

  986. require action

  987. and commitment.

  988. Few ways

  989. that that faith

  990. can be fed

  991. and faith,

  992. how it's more

  993. of a verb

  994. than it is a noun.

  995. That we participate

  996. in the life

  997. of God's covenant people,

  998. the church.

  999. Again,

  1000. I emphasize it

  1001. and I might have

1002. emphasized it a bit too much

  1003. because a couple people

  1004. were saying,

  1005. well,

1006. if you don't go to church,

  1007. were you saying

1008. if you don't go to church

  1009. you're not a Christian?

  1010. I would take a step

  1011. back from that.

  1012. But only to say

  1013. that the life

  1014. of the Christian

  1015. is lived out

  1016. in community,

  1017. in the church,

1018. in the life of the church.

  1019. It will require us

  1020. to be disciplined

1021. and grow in our discipline

  1022. in spiritual practices,

  1023. in prayer

  1024. and in scripture reading

  1025. and in saying yes

  1026. to virtues

  1027. and no to vices.

  1028. And then it also

  1029. means that we grow

  1030. in godly wisdom.

  1031. We need to feed

  1032. our faith

  1033. with the gospel,

  1034. with a reminder

  1035. that God

  1036. is at work

  1037. in our lives

  1038. in a huge display

  1039. of power

  1040. through the death

  1041. and resurrection

  1042. of Christ Jesus.

  1043. As we believe

  1044. and grow

  1045. in our belief,

  1046. we will see

  1047. this power

  1048. at work

  1049. in our lives

  1050. transforming us.

  1051. I mentioned

1052. the fruit of the spirit

  1053. earlier.

  1054. That is a way

  1055. that we will see

  1056. this transformation

  1057. take place.

  1058. Again,

  1059. saying yes

  1060. to the things

  1061. of God

  1062. a lot more

  1063. and saying no

  1064. to the things

  1065. of the world

  1066. or our flesh

  1067. or the devil

  1068. a lot less

  1069. or a lot more

1070. or we will say yes

1071. to it a lot less.

  1072. We will begin

  1073. to change

  1074. and be transformed.

  1075. But friends,

  1076. this is activated.

  1077. This power

  1078. is released

  1079. as we begin

  1080. to put our faith

  1081. and trust

  1082. in what God

  1083. has said

  1084. and in his word.

  1085. A great line

  1086. by a 5th century

  1087. Syrian bishop

  1088. named Theodorat.

  1089. It was quoted

  1090. in Timothy Keller's

  1091. commentary

  1092. on this text.

  1093. So I'm indebted

  1094. to the late

  1095. Timothy Keller

  1096. but this quote

  1097. by this 5th century

  1098. Syrian bishop

  1099. describes how faith

  1100. releases

  1101. this righteous power

  1102. of salvation

  1103. by likening

  1104. the gospel

  1105. to a pepper.

  1106. I think it's brilliant.

1107. This is what it says.

  1108. Quote,

  1109. A pepper outwardly

  1110. seems to be cold

  1111. but the person

  1112. who crunches it

  1113. between the teeth

  1114. experiences

  1115. the sensation

  1116. of burning fire.

  1117. A pepper

  1118. and that's

  1119. end quote.

  1120. A pepper may

  1121. or may not be

  1122. spicy

  1123. but the power

  1124. of it is not

  1125. released

  1126. until it is

  1127. consumed.

  1128. Which is to say

  1129. that you can talk

  1130. about the gospel

  1131. until the cows

  1132. come home

  1133. but until you put

  1134. your faith

  1135. and trust

  1136. in what God

  1137. has done

  1138. that that power

  1139. of transformation

1140. will not be at work

  1141. in our lives

  1142. for the gift

  1143. will not be received.

  1144. When we believe

  1145. in the gospel

1146. and the one true God

  1147. to save

  1148. we are saying

  1149. no to our own

  1150. vain efforts

  1151. to achieve

  1152. our own

  1153. version of dignity

  1154. and saying yes

  1155. to the incredible

  1156. work of God

  1157. to dignify us

  1158. in ways

  1159. we could never

  1160. imagine.

  1161. I'll end with this.

  1162. the great irony

  1163. of shirking

  1164. help to safeguard

  1165. our dignity

  1166. is that we become

  1167. undignified people.

  1168. We fail to see

  1169. that the God

  1170. of all creation

  1171. who made us

  1172. in his image

  1173. does not treat us

  1174. as garbage

  1175. when we fall

  1176. into indignity

  1177. but rather

  1178. restores our dignity

  1179. for Jesus Christ

  1180. who is the message

  1181. of the gospel

  1182. remember we said

  1183. last week

  1184. that it's not just

  1185. good news

1186. but it is a good person

  1187. namely Christ

  1188. for Christ Jesus

  1189. who is the message

  1190. of the gospel

  1191. who is the power

  1192. of God

  1193. for salvation

  1194. who is the righteousness

  1195. of God

  1196. he becomes

  1197. undignified

  1198. by leaving

  1199. the ultimate place

  1200. of divine dignity

  1201. that is heaven

  1202. taking on human flesh

  1203. dying a very

  1204. undignified

  1205. indign

  1206. way on the cross

  1207. for our sins

  1208. sins he didn't commit

  1209. and wearing wickedness

  1210. that was alien

  1211. to him

  1212. and then giving us

  1213. a righteousness

  1214. alien to us

  1215. we then get to

  1216. revel in his

  1217. righteousness

  1218. as saved sinners

  1219. as those who are

  1220. united to Christ

  1221. that share in his

  1222. sonship as children

  1223. of God

  1224. and this is accepted

  1225. by faith

  1226. and tell me

  1227. what is more dignified

  1228. than being a son

  1229. of God

  1230. okay

  1231. and I say son

  1232. because

  1233. although

  1234. definitely the imagery

  1235. in the Bible

  1236. and the language

  1237. uses sons and daughters

  1238. of God

  1239. but here it is

  1240. the place of the

  1241. firstborn son

  1242. the place of honor

  1243. in the ancient world

  1244. there is no

  1245. higher honor

  1246. than that

  1247. and that is what

  1248. God in Christ

  1249. is bestowing on us

  1250. as a gift

  1251. what is more

  1252. dignified than that

  1253. Christ has made

1254. a way for the sinner

  1255. to become a saint

  1256. and then we understand

  1257. that all of life

  1258. is a gift

1259. and we are not too

  1260. proud to take help

1261. and then to give it

  1262. without any strings

  1263. attached

  1264. the sooner we know

  1265. friends that

  1266. that we are not

  1267. that second mouse

  1268. but that both mice

  1269. die and drown

  1270. we would do well

1271. to start as a beginning

  1272. so that we would

  1273. understand the gospel

  1274. of Christ

  1275. in a

  1276. in a sweet

  1277. beautiful way

  1278. and receive it

  1279. by faith

  1280. that is the life

  1281. of dignity

  1282. that Christ offers

  1283. as a woman
