  1. If you want to follow along, we'll be in chapter 2 of Romans.

  2. When we have no movie to watch or we're in between series,

  3. ! we find ourselves going back to a quick episode of Seinfeld.

  4. And we watched one this past week where George,

  5. if you know anything about the characters, George, he is ridiculous and neurotic.

  6. He's my favourite character for sure.

  7. But he is trying to get out of a charity event that is in honour of his recently deceased fiancé

  8. by lying to her parents that he just purchased a place in the Hamptons.

  9. And he had to go there over the time of the event and sign the papers.

  10. And they hummed and hawed, okay, no problem, and he got out of it.

  11. And then it turns out that his would-be in-laws see him at a hot dog stand, of all places,

  12. and they know he was lying.

  13. And then George finds out that they lied to him, and he's incensed that they would lie to him,

  14. even though he lied to them.

  15. It's ridiculous.

  16. It's outrageous.

  17. It's top-notch George.

  18. But as absurd as it is, I think this is the beauty of good writing,

  19. it illustrates how shocking hypocrisy can be.

  20. It shows that we have this propensity to pass judgement on people,

  21. even though we do the very same thing as them, maybe even worse things.

  22. It's a very serious problem.

  23. It's one that is very pervasive, and it exposes the fact that,

  24. no matter how moralistic or upright we think we are,

  25. we really truly have no moralistic laurels to stand upon.

  26. So if you remember a couple weeks ago,

  27. Romans chapter 1, the Apostle Paul makes clear that mankind is idolatrous and antagonistic against God and his just rule.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  28. And that God's judgment, at least in this life,

  29. his just judgment is to hand them over to what they truly want.

  30. And what does it result in?

  31. A debased desires, passions, and a mind.

  32. This is from chapter 1, 18 to the end of the chapter.

  33. So in chapter 2, he will show us that this idolatry and rejection of God goes far deeper than just bad behaviour.

  34. And how the moralistic and religious person does not have a leg to stand on,

  35. for the judgment of God upon these people is alive and well.

  36. So we're going to take some time to go through the first half of chapter 2, verses 1 to 16.

  37. And we're going to learn some things about the justice and judgment of God.

  38. We're going to learn first that it is inescapable.

  39. We're going to learn also that it's impartial, and that it is incredibly just.

  40. And I'll just say this.

  41. Judgment is a very difficult thing.

  42. Nobody wants to be judged.

  43. And we look at other people as being, if they are judgy, as like a cardinal sin.

  44. But the judgment of God that we're going to encounter in the text this morning

  45. is an expression of his kindness.

  46. And in fact, in many respects, we do not get salvation without God's judgment.

  47. So it is a very good thing, and it is critical for us to understand.

  48. So if you have a scripture journal, turn with me, verse 1 of chapter 2,

  49. and we'll look at how the judgment of God is inescapable.

  50. Let's read verses 1 and 2.

  51. Therefore, you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges.

  52. For in passing judgment on another, you condemn yourself,

  53. because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

  54. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.

  55. So in light of all that Paul said in the previous chapter,

  56. it would be easy for the moral and upright person to feel pretty good about themselves.

  57. They have desires that are in check.

  58. Their passions are controlled.

  59. Their minds are sober, or so they think.

  60. They would say, God would say to them, the Apostle Paul is saying to them,

  61. you, every one of you, is actually a judgmental hypocrite.

  62. For your righteousness is really a self-righteousness,

  63. which means it is a mile wide and an inch deep,

  64. and worst of all, it cannot save you.

  65. Why is this self-righteousness not a fail-safe?

  66. Why is it not a means of salvation?

  67. Because as we are critical of others for their poor behavior,

  68. whatever that poor behavior is,

  69. we often give ourselves a pass.

  70. We have double standards.

  71. For others, those standards are impossibly high,

  72. and for ourselves, they are comfortably low.

  73. We have this incredible ability to rationalize our behavior as not being so bad.

  74. In the example I gave from Seinfeld,

  75. George is a master, first-degree liar and deceiver.

  76. And he, it's a part of who he is.

  77. It's no problem.

  78. Yet his would-be in-laws,

  79. all they do is don't let in, or let on that he's lying,

  80. and he's incensed.

  81. And it's funny in a situation, a sitcom like Seinfeld,

  82. but we find ourselves, if you're honest, doing the same thing.

  83. The standards for others are up here,

  84. but you get a pass.

  85. In preparation for this sermon,

  86. I thought about a very judgmental person

  87. who would do well to read and meditate upon this section of Scripture.

  88. Surely, if they read it,

  89. they would find themselves condemned,

  90. especially reading verses 1 to 4.

  91. In fact, this person needed this so desperately

  92. because their judgmentalism was hurting others,

  93. and it had to stop.

  94. I promise you, this was my thought process going through this

  95. on a certain day this week when I was in the text studying.

  96. And I found that,

  97. and maybe this is God and his kindness,

  98. that I was being just as judgmental,

  99. if not more,

  100. than the person that I was having this thought experiment about.

  101. That I was passing judgment on them

  102. as if I were God himself.

  103. Their judginess, bad.

  104. Mine, totally justified.

  105. I know what's right.

  106. I'm a minister.

  107. I'm reading the Bible.

  108. They need to get in here.

  109. This Scripture needs to be like a wake-up call,

  110. like a bucket of cold water in their face to wake them up.

  111. And yet, here I was condemning them

  112. as if I were God himself.

  113. I found, wow, this Scripture is unbelievably true.

  114. The standards for them, way higher.

  115. For me, way down here.

  116. And I'll just say this.

  117. This isn't a text that means that we can't pass a type of judgment

  118. that seeks to call people to holiness in a humble way.

  119. But rather, this is a pseudo-divine judgment.

  120. A judgment that, again, says that,

  121. you know, God might have to share his judgment seat with us

  122. because of our incredible ability to see right from wrong.

  123. Therefore, if people stand condemned by our standard,

  124. God is saying in our text

  125. that he will judge us according to our standard.

  126. In fact, he will judge us according to his standard.

  127. So if they stand condemned, surely we do as well.

  128. So why do we do this?

  129. I think the big reason why we do this

  130. is because we have this desire

  131. to maintain our self-righteousness

  132. and not deal with our sin.

  133. We like to excuse ourselves.

  134. We don't want to deal with the difficult behavior that we have

  135. because there's a level of indignity to it,

  136. and embarrassment to it,

  137. that we aren't willing to spare other people from.

  138. We think we can have our cake and eat it too.

  139. And can we get away with it?

  140. It would seem so.

  141. God is giving those shameful, sinful people over,

  142. remember verse one,

  143. over to their debased desires and passions

  144. and their debased minds.

  145. Yet here we are upright.

  146. So surely if God isn't judging us

  147. like those shameful people,

  148. then maybe he's giving us a pass.

  149. God does not judge me,

  150. for there is nothing to judge.

  151. But look with me at verse three and four,

  152. for Paul completely destroys that line of thinking.

  153. Do you suppose, O man,

  154. you who judge those who practice such things

  155. and yet do them yourself,

  156. that you will escape the judgment of God?

  157. Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness

  158. and forbearance and patience,

  159. not knowing that God's kindness

  160. is meant to lead you to repentance?

  161. It turns out that the self-righteous amongst us,

  162. the people beside you,

  163. maybe you yourself,

  164. such acts are just as much a rejection of God

  165. as the rejection of God described in chapter one.

  166. So we stand condemned.

  167. We think we will escape God's judgment

  168. because we think

  169. that not feeling the consequence

  170. of our judgmental and self-righteous hypocrisy

  171. is God potentially giving us license to sin.

  172. But really, Paul says,

  173. it's God allowing us time to repent,

  174. to understand the errors of our ways

  175. before his perfect judgment falls on us.

  176. Why?

  177. Because he is kind.

  178. Because he is loving.

  179. God's judgment is often delayed,

  180. but it is never negated.

  181. It is inescapable.

  182. For the one who is deserving of judgment,

  183. God will not ultimately let it pass.

  184. As we saw a couple weeks ago in chapter one,

  185. God's judgment actually is what makes

  186. God's righteousness righteous.

  187. For evil is rightly and justly dealt with

  188. wherever it is to be found.

  189. And yet we see the refrain throughout the Bible

  190. that God is long-suffering.

  191. He is patient.

  192. And this is part of his very character

  193. so that we would have, again,

  194. this opportunity to turn from our self-worship

  195. towards worship of him.

  196. But here we are.

  197. Some of us have been Christians

  198. for as long as we can remember.

  199. Some of us have become Christians

  200. only maybe in the last, say, five years

  201. or maybe less.

  202. Some of us,

  203. even though we would say we're Christians,

  204. maybe we're outside of the Christian faith.

  205. Wherever it may be,

  206. where you find yourself at this morning,

  207. what we all try to do is find refuge

  208. in God's character,

  209. presuming that he treats our sin

  210. the way we treat it,

  211. with comfortably low standards.

  212. But again, this is taking refuge

  213. in a false vision of who God is.

  214. What it does is it emphasizes the mercy

  215. at the expense of holiness.

  216. The gospel reading that I read

  217. from Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  218. What does Satan tempt Jesus with?

  219. With scripture,

  220. but always elevating one scripture

  221. at the expense or in contradiction

  222. of the other.

  223. So we can't talk about God's mercy,

  224. God's mercy, God's mercy, God's mercy,

  225. God's mercy,

  226. and somehow forget to talk

  227. about God's holiness.

  228. God is not a collection of his attributes

  229. where God is loving,

  230. God is merciful,

  231. God is holy,

  232. but maybe we can emphasize one or the other.

  233. Rather, classical theology will say

  234. that God is his attributes.

  235. And what does that mean?

  236. It means that we cannot pick and choose

  237. the attributes of God

  238. that we're cool with

  239. or that we're not cool with.

  240. If we do this,

  241. what we are doing

  242. is entering into a form of idolatry

  243. where we are fashioning God

  244. into an image that we are okay with

  245. or that we like.

  246. We are sanding off the rough edges

  247. of who God is

  248. or what he is demanding of us

  249. or the consequences of our sin.

  250. You see, it is not just those

  251. in chapter 1

  252. who are the idolatrous ones,

  253. but us as well.

  254. The upright people,

  255. the moralistic people.

  256. This is not a faith issuing

  257. from a transformed heart,

  258. but the exchange of the truth of God

  259. for a lie

  260. so that our hearts

  261. can remain hard

  262. and cold towards him

  263. so that we can get on

  264. with our lives

  265. and suppress the guilt

  266. that we may feel

  267. until we don't feel it.

  268. Verse 5.

  269. You see,

  270. God's patience

  271. does not mean we get off

  272. scot-free,

  273. scot-free.

  274. Rather, it just means that we are

  275. going to face an even greater judgment

  276. when the day comes.

  277. You see,

  278. hard hearts that think

  279. we are the exception

  280. to the rule

  281. are not hard hearts

  282. that will endure

  283. God's just judgment.

  284. And unfortunately for us,

  285. this is a perennial problem

  286. for every woman and man.

  287. We are fooled

  288. if we think God

  289. will show us partiality.

  290. It's heavy,

  291. but it needs to be said

  292. that God will not show us

  293. partiality

  294. and that his judgment

  295. is inescapable.

  296. How then can we gain

  297. a soft heart

  298. so that we can avoid

  299. the day of wrath?

  300. To avoid God's

  301. just judgment

  302. against us.

  303. Look with me

  304. at verses 6 and 7.

  305. This enters

  306. into our second point

  307. that God's judgment

  308. is impartial.

  309. Verses 6 and 7.

  310. 6, 7, and 8.

  311. God will render

  312. to each one

  313. according to his works.

  314. To those who,

  315. by patience

  316. in well-doing,

  317. seek for glory

  318. and honor

  319. and immortality,

  320. he will give

  321. eternal life.

  322. But for those

  323. who are self-seeking

  324. and do not obey

  325. the truth

  326. but obey unrighteousness,

  327. there will be

  328. wrath and fury.

  329. Is this a recipe

  330. for a soft heart?

  331. To do good works

  332. so that we would

  333. be righteous

  334. in God's sight?

  335. I mean,

  336. even with God's help,

  337. is this not a kind

  338. of righteousness

  339. brought about

  340. by self-improvement?

  341. And if the entire

  342. verses 1 to 5,

  343. that first half,

  344. had to do with

  345. those that think

  346. that they could

  347. self-righteously

  348. become righteous

  349. in God's sight,

  350. and as such,

  351. they're described

  352. with having a hard

  353. heart,

  354. then why does

  355. the solution here

  356. in verses 6 to 8

  357. seem to be that

  358. we need to work

  359. harder to do good

  360. so that God would

  361. somehow give us

  362. eternal life?

  363. What's happening here?

  364. Is Paul contradicting

  365. himself?

  366. These are important

  367. questions to consider.

  368. I think it's helpful

  369. for us to understand

  370. that Paul is a

  371. Bible scholar.

  372. He knows the Bible

  373. inside and out,

  374. and what he is doing

  375. here is quoting

  376. a line found

  377. throughout Scripture

  378. that God will

  379. render to each

  380. according to his

  381. works, but

  382. specifically, he is

  383. looking at Psalm 62

    Psalms 62:12

  384. verse 12.

  385. So a good question

  386. to ask, therefore,

  387. is what is Psalm 62

  388. all about?

  389. Psalm 62,

  390. just really quickly,

  391. verse 12 is where

  392. we get this

  393. quotation, and

  394. Psalm 62 verse 12

    Psalms 62:12

  395. says this,

  396. right at the end,

  397. for you will render

  398. to a man according

  399. to his works.

  400. You will render

  401. to a man according

  402. to his works.

  403. Very similar language

  404. as we see in verse 6.

  405. And yet, Psalm 62,

  406. written by King David,

  407. opens up verses 1 and 2

  408. with this,

  409. for God alone

  410. my soul waits

  411. in silence,

  412. from him comes

  413. my salvation,

  414. he alone is my rock

  415. and my salvation,

  416. my fortress,

  417. I shall not be

  418. greatly shaken.

  419. Verses 5 and 8

  420. of Psalm 62 says,

  421. for God alone,

  422. O my soul,

  423. wait in silence,

  424. for my hope

  425. is from him.

  426. He only is my rock

  427. and my salvation,

  428. my fortress,

  429. I shall not be shaken.

  430. On God rests

  431. my salvation

  432. and my glory,

  433. my rock,

  434. my refuge,

  435. is God.

  436. Trust in him

  437. at all times,

  438. O people.

  439. Pour out your heart

  440. before him.

  441. God is a refuge

  442. for us.

  443. Therefore,

  444. it would seem,

  445. taken,

  446. if we take that whole Psalm,

  447. all 12 verses,

  448. and we consider

  449. what these works

  450. are in verse 12

  451. of Psalm 62

  452. that Paul is quoting here

  453. in Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2:6

  454. verse 6,

  455. I think we can be

  456. sure that Paul

  457. doesn't have

  458. in mind

  459. a righteousness

  460. that is brought about

  461. by our works,

  462. but rather

  463. a type of works

  464. that are in

  465. a right response

  466. to the salvation

  467. of God.

  468. That God saves us,

  469. he is our fortress,

  470. he is our refuge,

  471. we find our salvation

  472. in him

  473. and in him alone

  474. and what do we do

  475. as a result?

  476. As an expression

  477. of that love

  478. and thankfulness

  479. that flows from salvation,

  480. we do good works,

  481. we follow him,

  482. we obey him.

  483. The Apostle James

  484. says something very similar

  485. in chapter 2,

  486. verse 26

  487. of his epistle,

  488. James 2, 26,

  489. For as the body

  490. apart from the spirit

  491. is dead,

  492. so also faith

  493. apart from works

  494. is dead.

  495. If you were here

  496. on Ash Wednesday

  497. for the exhortation

  498. at the beginning

  499. of the service,

  500. there was a line

  501. that I read,

  502. the faith that saves

  503. is the same faith

  504. that seeks to obey.

  505. So again,

  506. going back to verses

  507. 6 and 7,

  508. it would seem

  509. that Paul is referring

  510. to this very thing.

  511. He is referring

  512. to those

  513. who are seeking

  514. glory,

  515. honor,

  516. and immortality,

  517. doing good works

  518. in response

  519. to the salvation

  520. that God has already

  521. given because this

  522. is the way God

  523. gives salvation

  524. throughout both

  525. Testaments.

  526. God didn't just

  527. flip a switch

  528. in the New Testament

  529. or turn off

  530. the road

  531. and take a different

  532. kind of path

  533. for us

  534. so that we could

  535. find salvation

  536. through our works.

  537. It's always been

  538. relying on God

  539. to do the work

  540. that only He can do

  541. and we embrace it

  542. by faith

  543. and then we respond

  544. to Him

  545. in good works.

  546. So you see,

  547. a soft heart

  548. is one that

  549. humbles itself,

  550. one that seeks

  551. the righteousness

  552. of Christ,

  553. recognizing that

  554. our righteousness

  555. is an affront

  556. to what He is

  557. offering us.

  558. It can only come

  559. through the gospel

  560. of Christ.

  561. A hard heart

  562. as we have seen

  563. in the previous section

  564. and in chapter 1,

  565. it cannot escape

  566. the just wrath

  567. of God

  568. because it looks

  569. to God

  570. and says,

  571. to hell with you,

  572. I will be my own God.

  573. It's a rejection

  574. of God.

  575. Therefore,

  576. God does not judge

  577. us,

  578. our righteousness

  579. based on anything

  580. that we do,

  581. nor on who we are,

  582. which is a remarkable

  583. thing.

  584. I mean,

  585. here,

  586. since the enlightenment,

  587. I mean,

  588. human agency

  589. has been elevated

  590. as the chief aspect

  591. of who we are,

  592. but for the majority

  593. of human history,

  594. it actually mattered

  595. what family you came from.

  596. And I mean,

  597. it's still that way

  598. in many parts of the world

  599. and even here in Canada

  600. as well,

  601. but imagine

  602. this God is saying,

  603. it actually doesn't matter

  604. which family you come from,

  605. what pedigree

  606. you are from.

  607. If you have

  608. noble blood

  609. coursing through your veins,

  610. nor does it matter

  611. the job that you have,

  612. the ability to memorize

  613. chapter and verse

  614. from scripture

  615. or whether

  616. you attend

  617. with perfect attendance

  618. even on Sundays

  619. where there's a gold medal game

  620. on the Olympics,

  621. kudos to you all.

  622. God will not judge you

  623. more righteous

  624. than those

  625. that may or may not

  626. be staying home

  627. because they have a sniffle.

  628. No judgment.

  629. I'm just joking around.

  630. But you get my point

  631. that God,

  632. what he does

  633. is that he judges us

  634. instead based on

  635. our response

  636. to his good news.

  637. His salvation.

  638. You might be

  639. nodding your head,

  640. but just consider

  641. how scandalous

  642. a thing

  643. this is.

  644. For those that

  645. are here

  646. and I,

  647. friends,

  648. do not somehow

  649. think that you

  650. are exempt

  651. from self-righteousness

  652. because you are not.

  653. It means that

  654. you have no

  655. religious or moral

  656. leg to stand on.

  657. It means that

  658. if you are truly

  659. righteous

  660. in God's sight,

  661. it is not

  662. because of what

  663. you have done,

  664. but how you have

  665. responded to

  666. what God has done.

  667. In fact,

  668. verse 8 says

  669. that such an attitude

  670. that pushes back

  671. against this

  672. is the hallmark

  673. of one who

  674. obeys unrighteousness.

  675. Verses 9 and 10

  676. really cements

  677. this down

  678. that God is

  679. one who judges

  680. with imperfect

  681. impartiality.

  682. Verses 9 and 10

  683. says this,

  684. There will be

  685. tribulation

  686. and distress

  687. for every human

  688. being who does evil,

  689. the Jew first

  690. and also the Greek,

  691. but glory and honour

  692. and peace

  693. for everyone

  694. who does good,

  695. the Jew first

  696. and also to the Greek.

  697. For God

  698. shows no partiality.

  699. This is wonderful

  700. news for us

  701. because we cannot

  702. fall out of favour

  703. with God

  704. if we are in favour

  705. with him,

  706. if we respond

  707. rightly

  708. to his free,

  709. wonderful,

  710. incredible,

  711. scandalous gift

  712. of salvation.

  713. But what about

  714. those who do not

  715. yet know Christ?

  716. Sure,

  717. God shows

  718. no favouritism

  719. judging all

  720. based on how

  721. they respond

  722. to the gospel,

  723. to his salvation.

  724. But does that

  725. not make God

  726. unjust in his

  727. judgment

  728. because he judges

  729. those who do not

  730. know Christ

  731. and yet they have

  732. not heard him?

  733. Now,

  734. the next section

  735. is going to get

  736. into this

  737. and what it

  738. doesn't get into

  739. is what do we

  740. do or how does

  741. God treat people

  742. in a scenario

  743. where there is

  744. an unreached

  745. people group

  746. and how he's

  747. going to hold

  748. them to account

  749. at the end

  750. of the age.

  751. I think that is

  752. putting too much

  753. weight on this

  754. specific verse.

  755. Nevertheless,

  756. we're going to

  757. see in this

  758. next and final

  759. section that

  760. God's judgment,

  761. although it is

  762. inescapable and

  763. impartial,

  764. it is certainly

  765. not unjust,

  766. but it is just.

  767. Read with me

  768. verses 12 to 16.

  769. For all who

  770. have sinned

  771. without the law

  772. will also perish

  773. without the law

  774. and all who

  775. have sinned

  776. under the law

  777. will be judged

  778. by the law.

  779. For it is not

  780. the hearers of the

  781. law who are

  782. righteous before

  783. God,

  784. but the doers

  785. of the law

  786. who will be

  787. justified.

  788. For when Gentiles

  789. who do not

  790. have the law

  791. by nature

  792. do what the

  793. law requires,

  794. they are a law

  795. to themselves

  796. even though

  797. they do not

  798. have the law.

  799. They show that

  800. the work of the

  801. law is written

  802. on their hearts

  803. while their

  804. conscience also

  805. bears witness

  806. and their

  807. conflicting thoughts

  808. accuse or even

  809. excuse them.

  810. On that day

  811. when,

  812. according to my

  813. gospel,

  814. God judges

  815. the secrets

  816. of men

  817. by Christ Jesus.

  818. I think a bit

  819. more context

  820. will help us

  821. understand this

  822. very briefly.

  823. God's chosen

  824. people,

  825. the Jewish

  826. nation,

  827. receives the law

  828. at Mount Sinai

  829. after they are

  830. rescued from

  831. Egypt,

  832. but before they

  833. enter the

  834. promised land.

  835. possessing the

  836. law,

  837. they do not

  838. make,

  839. did not make

  840. them God's

  841. people,

  842. but as God's

  843. people they

  844. were to

  845. follow his

  846. law to

  847. live holy

  848. lives that

  849. honoured God.

  850. Again,

  851. we see a

  852. response to

  853. God's salvation

  854. by honouring

  855. him and

  856. following him.

  857. A faith

  858. without works

  859. is a dead

  860. kind of faith.

  861. So the law

  862. or the Torah

  863. was God's

  864. revelation to

  865. his people

  866. about how

  867. they ought

  868. to live

  869. and how

  870. they must

  871. look to

  872. God for

  873. salvation.

  874. But the

  875. history of the

  876. Jewish people

  877. is no

  878. different in

  879. many respects

  880. from the

  881. history of

  882. all the

  883. other peoples

  884. in that

  885. they were

  886. idolatrous.

  887. They

  888. honoured

  889. themselves

  890. rather than

  891. honouring

  892. God,

  893. but the

  894. difference

  895. is that

  896. they knew

  897. how they

  898. should have

  899. acted.

  900. For God

  901. had made

  902. it clear

  903. when he

  904. gave them

  905. the law.

  906. It was

  907. clear in

  908. the law

  909. what was

  910. good and

  911. evil,

  912. and that

  913. sin would

  914. be justly

  915. judged.

  916. But again,

  917. what about

  918. those who

  919. do not

  920. have the

  921. law,

  922. who have

  923. not heard

  924. about the

  925. God of

  926. the Bible?

  927. What about

  928. those who

  929. worshipped

  930. Jupiter or

  931. Hermes in

  932. the first

  933. century?

  934. How about

  935. the ancient

  936. worshippers of

  937. Hinduism in

  938. the far

  939. east of

  940. the ancient

  941. Near East,

  942. or those

  943. that subscribe

  944. to the

  945. faith of

  946. Jainism?

  947. How about

  948. the various

  949. peoples in

  950. the Americas

  951. who will

  952. not hear

  953. about the

  954. God of

  955. the Bible

  956. for another

  957. 1500 years,

  958. and when

  959. they hear

  960. about the

  961. God of

  962. the Bible,

  963. it is a

  964. distorted

  965. kind of

  966. God that

  967. they're

  968. presented?

  969. What about

  970. your irreligious

  971. aunt who

  972. has never

  973. heard the

  974. gospel?

  975. Or your

  976. Muslim

  977. co-worker who

  978. delights in

  979. taking his

  980. son to

  981. hockey practice,

  982. but again,

  983. has never

  984. heard about

  985. Jesus?

  986. What about

  987. them?

  988. How can

  989. God justly

  990. judge them

  991. at the

  992. end of

  993. the age?

  994. They do

  995. not have

  996. the law,

  997. So

  998. therefore,

  999. you'd

  1000. think that

  1001. they cannot

  1002. be judged

  1003. by God

  1004. for their

  1005. actions

  1006. because they

  1007. did not

  1008. know right

  1009. from wrong.

  1010. But Paul,

  1011. he sticks

  1012. a pin in

  1013. that balloon.

  1014. He says,

  1015. no,

  1016. for all

  1017. sin,

  1018. whether under

  1019. the law

  1020. or apart

  1021. from the

  1022. law,

  1023. know it.

  1024. No one

  1025. can perfectly

  1026. keep the

  1027. law.

  1028. Remember,

  1029. we're in

  1030. section from

  1031. verses 1-18

  1032. to the end

  1033. of chapter 3

  1034. verse 20

  1035. that really

  1036. sells the

  1037. problem of

  1038. why we need

  1039. the gospel,

  1040. the gospel

  1041. being in

  1042. chapter 1

  1043. verses 16

  1044. and 17.

  1045. So we're in

  1046. an extended

  1047. section that

  1048. sells the

  1049. problem why

  1050. we need

  1051. the gospel.

  1052. And right

  1053. at the very

  1054. end,

  1055. chapter 3

  1056. verse 20,

  1057. Paul makes

  1058. this alarming

  1059. statement.

  1060. If you have

  1061. your scripture

  1062. journal,

  1063. it will be

  1064. on page 18.

  1065. And this

  1066. is what he

  1067. says,

  1068. chapter 3

  1069. verse 20.

  1070. For by

  1071. works of

  1072. the law,

  1073. no human

  1074. being will

  1075. be justified

  1076. in God's

  1077. sight,

  1078. since through

  1079. the law

  1080. comes knowledge

  1081. of sin.

  1082. And Paul

  1083. here,

  1084. he is saying

  1085. that even

  1086. if you

  1087. could keep

  1088. the law,

  1089. as people

  1090. that receive

  1091. the law,

  1092. as Jewish

  1093. people,

  1094. because you're

  1095. a lawbreaker,

  1096. you are

  1097. condemned,

  1098. but also

  1099. for those

  1100. that do not

  1101. have the

  1102. law,

  1103. God has

  1104. created all

  1105. people to be

  1106. moral creatures.

  1107. To know

  1108. that there

  1109. is an

  1110. eternity.

  1111. How they

  1112. describe it,

  1113. how they

  1114. communicate it,

  1115. that's besides

  1116. the point,

  1117. but they know

  1118. that there is

  1119. something of

  1120. a moral

  1121. universe,

  1122. and some

  1123. kind of

  1124. creator that

  1125. has created

  1126. all things.

  1127. Human beings

  1128. are both

  1129. moral and

  1130. God conscious.

  1131. Therefore,

  1132. right and wrong

  1133. are universally

  1134. known.

  1135. God

  1136. is saying

  1137. in verses

  1138. 13 and

  1139. 14,

  1140. hypothetically,

  1141. that even

  1142. if the

  1143. lawkeepers

  1144. could keep

  1145. the law,

  1146. okay,

  1147. even if the

  1148. people that

  1149. didn't have

  1150. the law

  1151. could somehow

  1152. keep the

  1153. requirements of

  1154. the law,

  1155. they would be

  1156. justified,

  1157. but they

  1158. can't.

  1159. All human

  1160. beings in

  1161. all places

  1162. at all

  1163. times know

  1164. that there is

  1165. right and

  1166. wrong,

  1167. they know

  1168. that there's

  1169. some kind

  1170. of eternity,

  1171. or at

  1172. least they're

  1173. longing for

  1174. an eternity,

  1175. and yet

  1176. all of them

  1177. are law

  1178. breakers.

  1179. All of

  1180. them.

  1181. Jew or

  1182. Greek,

  1183. all of them

  1184. are law

  1185. breakers,

  1186. all of them

  1187. know right

  1188. and wrong,

  1189. good from

  1190. evil,

  1191. and all

  1192. of them

  1193. have this

  1194. propensity

  1195. to look

  1196. towards evil

  1197. and not

  1198. for good.

  1199. Therefore,

  1200. when God

  1201. judges,

  1202. he will

  1203. judge all

  1204. by the

  1205. standards

  1206. that were

  1207. given,

  1208. that they

  1209. were given,

  1210. and by

  1211. the secrets

  1212. of their

  1213. hearts.

  1214. So in

  1215. short,

  1216. God's

  1217. judgment

  1218. will take

  1219. into account

  1220. all the

  1221. considerations,

  1222. even those

  1223. of the

  1224. interior life.

  1225. He knows

  1226. the hearts

  1227. and the

  1228. minds

  1229. and the

  1230. thoughts

  1231. and the

  1232. motives

  1233. of all,

  1234. which is

  1235. a very

  1236. frightening

  1237. thing,

  1238. and he

  1239. will judge

  1240. accordingly.

  1241. So how

  1242. can this

  1243. God,

  1244. who knows

  1245. even our

  1246. own thoughts,

  1247. how could

  1248. he possibly,

  1249. in his

  1250. goodness,

  1251. be unjust

  1252. in his

  1253. judgment?

  1254. This is

  1255. telling us

  1256. that there

  1257. will be no

  1258. miscarriage of

  1259. judgment at

  1260. the day of

  1261. judgment.

  1262. All facts

  1263. will be

  1264. considered,

  1265. all secrets

  1266. known.

  1267. In fact,

  1268. the call of

  1269. your purity

  1270. that we say

  1271. before every

  1272. service reminds

  1273. us of this,

  1274. that God

  1275. knows all

  1276. of our

  1277. thoughts,

  1278. all of our

  1279. motives,

  1280. and then we

  1281. ask God to

  1282. cleanse the

  1283. thoughts of

  1284. our hearts

  1285. by the

  1286. inspiration of

  1287. his Holy

  1288. Spirit.

  1289. our motives

  1290. will be

  1291. exposed and

  1292. this judgment

  1293. will come

  1294. through Christ

  1295. himself.

  1296. To have

  1297. our very

  1298. motives

  1299. displayed as

  1300. if they

  1301. would be on

  1302. a screen at

  1303. the end of

  1304. the age,

  1305. it's a

  1306. terrifying

  1307. thought.

  1308. We are

  1309. expert

  1310. hiders of

  1311. sin.

  1312. Who could

  1313. stand?

  1314. The

  1315. religious

  1316. with their

  1317. law?

  1318. The

  1319. irreligious

  1320. with their

  1321. built-in

  1322. morality?

  1323. Who

  1324. could

  1325. stand

  1326. before

  1327. this

  1328. God?

  1329. So then

  1330. ultimately,

  1331. if God

  1332. is a

  1333. God who

  1334. judges

  1335. with an

  1336. inescapable

  1337. judgment,

  1338. who is

  1339. impartial in

  1340. his judgment,

  1341. who is

  1342. just in

  1343. his judgment,

  1344. is there

  1345. hope to

  1346. escape this

  1347. judgment?

  1348. Here's the

  1349. hope.

  1350. The hope

  1351. is that

  1352. our judge

  1353. is also

  1354. our

  1355. savior.

  1356. savior.

  1357. The one

  1358. who knows

  1359. our

  1360. interior

  1361. life,

  1362. our

  1363. motives,

  1364. our

  1365. secrets,

  1366. the

  1367. things

  1368. that

  1369. you

  1370. have

  1371. thought

  1372. about,

  1373. the

  1374. things

  1375. that

  1376. maybe

  1377. that

  1378. you

  1379. have

  1380. fantasized

  1381. about,

  1382. the

  1383. things

  1384. that

  1385. you

  1386. would

  1387. be

  1388. utterly

  1389. embarrassed

  1390. if anybody

  1391. knew.

  1392. He

  1393. to take

  1394. upon

  1395. himself

  1396. all

  1397. that

  1398. would

  1399. be

  1400. judged

  1401. justly

  1402. against

  1403. you

  1404. that

  1405. was

  1406. laid

  1407. on

  1408. him

  1409. so

  1410. that

  1411. we

  1412. could

  1413. have

  1414. a

  1415. standing

  1416. before

  1417. God

  1418. himself.

  1419. So

  1420. you

  1421. see,

  1422. here's

  1423. the

  1424. thing,

  1425. like I

  1426. said at

  1427. the

  1428. beginning,

  1429. that

  1430. God's

  1431. judgment,

  1432. without

  1433. it,

  1434. salvation

  1435. would have

  1436. no meaning.

  1437. What

  1438. would we

  1439. be saved

  1440. from?

  1441. So

  1442. in the

  1443. end,

  1444. Christ,

  1445. he

  1446. takes

  1447. upon

  1448. himself

  1449. the

  1450. penalty

  1451. for

  1452. our

  1453. sins

  1454. so

  1455. that

  1456. we

  1457. are

  1458. judged

  1459. not

  1460. by

  1461. the

  1462. way

  1463. we

  1464. ought

  1465. to

  1466. be

  1467. judged

  1468. justly

  1469. by

  1470. God,

  1471. impartially

  1472. by

  1473. God,

  1474. inescapably

  1475. by

  1476. God,

  1477. but

  1478. rather

  1479. we

  1480. are

  1481. judged

  1482. to

  1483. be

  1484. clean,

  1485. to

  1486. be

  1487. innocent,

  1488. to

  1489. be

  1490. guilt

  1491. free,

  1492. for

  1493. Christ

  1494. has

  1495. stood

  1496. in

  1497. our

  1498. place.

  1499. You

  1500. see,

  1501. I

  1502. think

  1503. the

  1504. great

  1505. tragedy

  1506. of

  1507. human

  1508. life

  1509. is

  1510. that

  1511. we

  1512. do

  1513. not

  1514. want

  1515. to

  1516. admit

  1517. the

  1518. indignity

  1519. of

  1520. being

  1521. both

  1522. self-righteous

  1523. and

  1524. sinful

  1525. so we

  1526. self-justify.

  1527. We

  1528. bend the

  1529. rules

  1530. and standards

  1531. so that

  1532. we can

  1533. enjoy a

  1534. level of

  1535. self-defined

  1536. dignity,

  1537. but the

  1538. real

  1539. indignity

  1540. of it

  1541. all

  1542. is

  1543. renouncing

  1544. the

  1545. righteousness

  1546. of

  1547. God,

  1548. denying

  1549. his

  1550. good

  1551. and

  1552. just

  1553. judgment

  1554. for

  1555. something

  1556. we

  1557. call

  1558. righteousness

  1559. but

  1560. is

  1561. utter

  1562. folly.

  1563. I was

  1564. trying to

  1565. think of

  1566. an

  1567. example

  1568. of it.

  1569. Lewis

  1570. has

  1571. this

  1572. example

  1573. where he

  1574. talks

  1575. of

  1576. here

  1577. we

  1578. are

  1579. making

  1580. mud

  1581. pies

  1582. when

  1583. there

  1584. is

  1585. an

  1586. incredible

  1587. vacation

  1588. for us

  1589. at the

  1590. beach

  1591. waiting.

  1592. I mean

  1593. I look

  1594. at it

  1595. like

  1596. there's

  1597. this

  1598. incredible

  1599. table

  1600. that is

  1601. set

  1602. for us

  1603. the

  1604. choices

  1605. foods

  1606. the

  1607. best

  1608. drink

  1609. and

  1610. the

  1611. best

  1612. host

  1613. that

  1614. will

  1615. be

  1616. dining

  1617. with

  1618. us

  1619. Christ

  1620. himself

  1621. and

  1622. we

  1623. are

  1624. more

  1625. content

  1626. to

  1627. broom

  1628. up

  1629. the

  1630. crud

  1631. that

  1632. has

  1633. fallen

  1634. from

  1635. the

  1636. meal

  1637. before

  1638. and

  1639. try

  1640. to

  1641. pick

  1642. out

  1643. the

  1644. crumbs

  1645. and

  1646. somehow

  1647. claiming

  1648. that

  1649. this

  1650. would

  1651. be

  1652. a

  1653. better

  1654. meal

  1655. than

  1656. the

  1657. one

  1658. that

  1659. is

  1660. lavishly

  1661. made

  1662. in

  1663. front

  1664. of

  1665. us.

  1666. Friends

  1667. this

  1668. is

  1669. what

  1670. it

  1671. is

  1672. like

  1673. when

  1674. we

  1675. say

  1676. that

  1677. our

  1678. righteousness

  1679. our

  1680. dignity

  1681. is

  1682. greater

  1683. than

  1684. God's

  1685. that

  1686. he

  1687. offers

  1688. to

  1689. us

  1690. through

  1691. Christ

  1692. our

  1693. Lord.

  1694. Friends

  1695. the

  1696. perfectly

  1697. just

  1698. righteous

  1699. and

  1700. impartial

  1701. judge

  1702. he

  1703. is

  1704. also

  1705. your

  1706. savior

  1707. remember

  1708. this

  1709. so

  1710. let's

  1711. be

  1712. done

  1713. with

  1714. trying

  1715. to

  1716. save

  1717. ourselves

  1718. trying

  1719. to

  1720. self

  1721. justify

  1722. judging

  1723. other

  1724. people

  1725. so that

  1726. we

  1727. somehow

  1728. will

  1729. diminish

  1730. our

  1731. sin

  1732. and

  1733. stand

  1734. in

  1735. judgment

  1736. over

  1737. them

  1738. and

  1739. again

  1740. further

  1741. bolster

  1742. our

  1743. own

  1744. self

  1745. righteousness

  1746. but

  1747. rather

  1748. embrace

  1749. the

  1750. kindness

  1751. and

  1752. love

  1753. of

  1754. God

  1755. that

  1756. is

  1757. leading

  1758. us

  1759. to

  1760. repentance

  1761. friends

  1762. let us

  1763. do away

  1764. with this

  1765. false

  1766. and

  1767. fake

  1768. and

  1769. utterly

  1770. ridiculous

  1771. indignity

  1772. of self

  1773. righteousness

  1774. and let us

  1775. look to

  1776. Christ

  1777. sin

  1778. Thank you.
