  1. Our first reading is from Romans chapter 3 and we'll start in the 21st verse.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  2. Romans chapter 3 starting in the 21st verse.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  3. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it.

  4. The righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

  5. For there is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

  6. whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood to be received by faith.

  7. This was to show God's righteousness because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

  8. It was to show his righteousness at the present time so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

  9. Then what becomes of our boasting?

  10. It is excluded.

  11. By what kind of law?

  12. By a law of works?

  13. No, but by the law of faith.

  14. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

  15. Or is God the God of Jews only?

  16. Is he not the God of Gentiles also?

  17. Yes, of Gentiles also.

  18. Since God is one, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith?

  19. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith?

  20. By no means.

  21. On the contrary, we uphold the law.

  22. So in my opinion, one of Tom Hanks' best movies, and if you disagree with me, I'll be at the back waiting.

  23. It sounded like I was going to get in a fight.

  24. That's not the case at all.

  25. I'd argue.

  26. Maybe a verbal fight.

  27. But I think it's the road to perdition.

  28. I love this movie.

  29. Early 2000s movie.

  30. It takes place during Prohibition, Illinois.

  31. It's also, I think it's Paul Newman's last movie he does before he dies.

  32. So it's Prohibition, Illinois.

  33. And it follows Tom Hanks, who seeks revenge on his boss's son.

  34. His boss, who is like a father to him.

  35. Because his boss's son killed his wife and his young son.

  36. Tried to kill the whole family.

  37. But Tom Hanks and his older son live.

  38. Anyways, the boss, again, played by Paul Newman.

  39. He tries to avert the wrath of Tom Hanks, his character Sullivan.

  40. But it can't be appeased.

  41. There's nothing he can do.

  42. The crimes of Newman's son must be paid for.

  43. And it must be paid for in blood.

  44. Definitely not a movie to watch with kids.

  45. But it's really, it's a great movie.

  46. Anyways, justice must be accomplished.

  47. Mercy is not an option.

  48. There's something in this for us to consider.

  49. For often, justice and mercy, they are elusive in this life.

  50. And they're elusive for a number of reasons.

  51. But a couple are actually quite obvious if you think about it.

  52. Justice and mercy are elusive for us because we are both inconsistent and often hypocritical.

  53. When we are wronged, we want justice.

  54. And we will have justice.

  55. And we will have it now.

  56. But when we have wronged others, we deserve mercy.

  57. Give us mercy.

  58. We deserve it.

  59. And we find ourselves neither enjoying justice or mercy because we are inconsistent people.

  60. We are hypocritical people.

  61. And we often have neither.

  62. So it's an interesting question to think through.

  63. Can mercy and justice be enjoyed?

  64. Is this even possible?

  65. Are they not exclusive to one another?

  66. What do we make sense of it all?

  67. Our text this morning will help us to answer this question.

  68. In our text, it is so theologically dense and so important to the entire argument of Paul in Romans.

  69. In fact, it could be argued that this is the key text in all of the book.

  70. And if Romans is, in many ways, the greatest articulation of the gospel that we have in the Bible.

  71. I don't want to say it's the best book in the Bible.

  72. Because I want to say the Bible is a whole, even though it's comprised of other books.

  73. But if we want to say it's the finest, most robust articulation of the gospel.

  74. Then what we have this morning is a very, very, very important text to consider.

  75. And a text that's going to help us to understand justice and mercy.

  76. We're going to look at the text.

  77. And this is how I've broken it down.

  78. The text, again, we could spend weeks in it.

  79. We're going to spend one.

  80. And it's going to, we're going to look at three things.

  81. We're going to look at one glorious declaration that it makes.

  82. We're going to look at two essential truths in this text.

  83. And finally, three comforting words.

  84. And actually, I mean, I'll touch a bit on verses 27 to 31.

  85. But we'll spend the majority of our time in verses 21 to 26.

  86. So again, one glorious declaration.

  87. Two very essential truths.

  88. And three very comforting words as we consider the nature of the gospel in light of justice and mercy.

  89. Let's get into it.

  90. Point one.

  91. One glorious declaration.

  92. So it's, I was away last week.

  93. I'll just say this.

  94. I was away last week.

  95. I had the privilege of being at a young adult's retreat.

  96. And, you know, whatever you guys read about, whatever I read about in the media about, I guess it's Generation Z or Zed.

  97. And, you know, these kids were inspiring.

  98. Truly, the faith that these 18 to 25-year-olds had.

  99. It was really something.

  100. Did they stay up until 4 in the morning?

  101. Yes, they did.

  102. Did I go to bed at 1130?

  103. Yes, I did.

  104. So there was some things that made me kind of scratch my head.

  105. But overall, incredible.

  106. The faith and the love that these guys had.

  107. Not just for the Lord, but for one another.

  108. It really was something to behold.

  109. That's nothing to do with the text.

  110. Only to say that I was in here last week.

  111. So it was two weeks since we've been in Romans.

  112. So a bit of a reminder.

  113. Two weeks ago, we wrapped up this pretty significant section that the Apostle Paul was arguing about why we fall short of the righteousness of God.

  114. And why there is no moral or religious leg that we can stand on.

  115. So back in chapter 1, verse 17, 16 and 17, the Apostle Paul says that he is not ashamed of the gospel.

  116. It's the power of God unto salvation.

  117. Verse 17, it says that in the gospel, the righteousness of God has been revealed or manifested.

  118. And then from chapter 1, 18 to 3, chapter 3, verse 20, he shows us how we can't even hold a candle to God's righteousness.

  119. That we are in a very, very sad state.

  120. And not just one segment of the population, but all.

  121. He talks about the religious, the irreligious.

  122. He talks about the completely immoral and the morally upright.

  123. He talks about Jews.

  124. He talks about Greeks.

  125. The idea is we could extend it to every person that's ever lived, regardless of where they are from.

  126. Everybody falls short.

  127. And I would say that he makes a compelling case.

  128. The verdict is in.

  129. We are cooked.

  130. We are eternally cooked.

  131. The human race has no hope.

  132. Except that the argument doesn't end in chapter 3, verse 20.

  133. Because chapter 3, verse 21 says this and everything changes with these two words.

  134. Verse 21, but now.

  135. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law.

  136. Although the law and the prophets bear witness to it.

  137. The apostle says, but now.

  138. God has done something.

  139. And he returns to chapter 1, verse 17, where he says the righteousness of God has been revealed.

  140. He is saying, listen, that righteousness of God, he returns to it.

  141. It is coming and breaking in.

  142. You aren't cooked anymore.

  143. Okay?

  144. You are not damned.

  145. You are not hopeless people.

  146. After feeling the heaviness of sin and the hopelessness of our own situation in life,

  147. Paul says that God has revealed himself.

  148. He has revealed his righteousness.

  149. And it is in his son, Jesus.

  150. And it has happened.

  151. It's not something he's talking about.

  152. It's not something where he's saying, I'm promising to do it one day, somehow, at some place.

  153. He's saying, now.

  154. It's come.

  155. Now.

  156. This righteousness, it is from heaven.

  157. It is from God.

  158. And therefore, it means that it is foreign to us.

  159. It is foreign to us.

  160. It is also foreign to the law.

  161. In that, we cannot keep the law.

  162. The law was not designed in such a way that if we keep it, that we would get this righteousness from God.

  163. This is a righteousness that emanates from God himself.

  164. Paul, he'll talk about that.

  165. That does not negate the law.

  166. In fact, this is not some new revelation.

  167. The law, the prophets, the writings, the entirety of the Old Testament Bible.

  168. It points to what Jesus did on the cross.

  169. It points that to this anointed one, this Messiah who would come and to die,

  170. even though he was perfect for the sins of the world.

  171. Everything points to Jesus.

  172. So this righteousness was revealed through this moment in history, this historical death and resurrection of the Messiah,

  173. the anointed one, Christ Jesus, the Lord of Lords, and the King of Kings.

  174. And I am no Greek scholar, okay?

  175. So, but I read commentaries of people that are.

  176. And what's interesting here is that the Greek grammar that the Apostle Paul uses,

  177. it is in a perfect tense, which is to say that when Paul is referring to this revelation,

  178. in chapter 3, verse 21, that God's righteousness was revealed,

  179. it means that it was fully and perfectly revealed at a very specific time, at a very specific place.

  180. And it's referring to the actual crucifixion of Jesus,

  181. his literal death, his literal burial,

  182. and then three days later, when a body should be decomposing,

  183. he literally rises from the grave.

  184. That's why for centuries, millennia, we have rightly marked time with Anno Domini,

  185. in the year of our Lord.

  186. All of history revolves around the birth and life and death and resurrection and ascension of Jesus.

  187. Why do we do this?

  188. Because in the redemption of Christ, the hopelessness

  189. that Paul so perfectly articulates in chapter 1, 18 to 3, 20,

  190. has been completely undone.

  191. Human beings are no longer hopeless.

  192. All of time revolves around what happened

  193. in, at Golgotha,

  194. some 2,000 plus years ago.

  195. But there's something even more to it, okay?

  196. Because, again, not a Greek scholar,

  197. but if we consider the grammar that Paul uses back in chapter 1, verse 17,

  198. again, right, he is,

  199. this isn't the first time he's talking about the righteousness of God being revealed.

  200. He says it back in chapter 1, 17,

  201. and the grammar there

  202. lends itself to this idea that

  203. it's an ongoing revelation of what God is revealing,

  204. his righteousness being revealed,

  205. which is to say,

  206. every time that the gospel is proclaimed,

  207. right now,

  208. the righteousness of God is being revealed.

  209. It is being proclaimed.

  210. Whenever we gather in Christ's name,

  211. reminded of the gospel,

  212. whenever we hear the words of Scripture proclaimed,

  213. where God is lifted high and his Son is glorified,

  214. whenever we partake at the Lord's table,

  215. whenever we confess our sins

  216. and look to Christ for forgiveness

  217. and hear those sweet words of absolution and comfort,

  218. whenever we read those words of institution where Jesus said,

  219. on the night that he was betrayed,

  220. he took bread,

  221. he broke it,

  222. he gave you thanks,

  223. same way he took the cup and he gave you thanks,

  224. whenever we are proclaiming the gospel,

  225. the righteousness of God is being revealed.

  226. So it is to say that it happened in a specific time

  227. and in a specific place,

  228. but that this revelation of God's righteousness,

  229. right,

  230. that erases our hopelessness,

  231. it pours into every single minute

  232. of every single second of every single day,

  233. wherever Christ's name is lifted high

  234. and his gospel is proclaimed.

  235. It's this very dynamic reality we live in

  236. of the righteousness of God being revealed.

  237. So when we go back to verse 21 and Paul,

  238. again, remember,

  239. he has laid out such an airtight,

  240. compelling case

  241. that we are hopeless people,

  242. right?

  243. He gets to verse 21 and he says,

  244. but now the righteousness of God

  245. is being revealed.

  246. It has been revealed

  247. in Christ's death and resurrection.

  248. It is continuing to be revealed

  249. in every time that his name

  250. and his gospel is proclaimed.

  251. And all of a sudden,

  252. we are reminded that we are not hopeless people,

  253. but we are people with purpose.

  254. We are people that have an eternal place

  255. waiting for us.

  256. And that's why I think

  257. it is a very glorious declaration.

  258. God has revealed

  259. his righteous character

  260. and plan of salvation

  261. to us unrighteous people.

  262. And what is that plan of salvation?

  263. That God does not merely

  264. reveal his righteousness,

  265. but that he will also impart

  266. that righteousness.

  267. So that this foreign righteousness

  268. that is something

  269. that we could never attain

  270. on our own,

  271. but we desperately need,

  272. it is for us

  273. and that we can take it

  274. by faith.

  275. So thinking through this,

  276. we need to consider

  277. the next point,

  278. these two essential truths.

  279. I'll be looking at verses 22 to 23.

  280. So we've had one glorious declaration

  281. and now we have two essential truths

  282. connected to it.

  283. The first is that

  284. this righteousness is for us

  285. when we accept it by faith.

  286. Let's look at this first truth

  287. and we'll spend

  288. just a bit of time

  289. in verse 22.

  290. And verse 22 says this,

  291. the righteousness of God

  292. through faith in Jesus Christ

  293. for all who believe.

  294. This foreign righteousness

  295. that is imparted to us

  296. is only ours

  297. if we receive it

  298. by faith.

  299. So a very important,

  300. crucial follow-up question

  301. is

  302. what is faith?

  303. What is

  304. meant by

  305. the Apostle Paul

  306. when he says

  307. it is for all

  308. who believe?

  309. What is the nature of faith?

  310. What happens

  311. importantly

  312. when we

  313. have these feelings of faith

  314. and then we find

  315. that these feelings of faith

  316. begin to wane?

  317. Is

  318. this righteousness

  319. given to us

  320. only

  321. when we

  322. are feeling

  323. kind of

  324. vibrant

  325. in our Christian walk?

  326. I often think

  327. of

  328. how my faith

  329. has waned

  330. and

  331. considering

  332. is

  333. God's salvation

  334. contingent

  335. upon my

  336. faith?

  337. I think of it

  338. as like a

  339. carnival game

  340. or a fair game

  341. when you have

  342. this little

  343. water pistol

  344. that you have

  345. to shoot

  346. in a tiny

  347. dollar-sized hole

  348. to move

  349. like a

  350. fake horse

  351. down

  352. whatever

  353. the

  354. fake little

  355. I don't know

  356. what it is

  357. okay

  358. it's a carnival game

  359. I know you guys

  360. might have seen it

  361. I don't know

  362. the name of the

  363. carnival game

  364. but this idea

  365. that okay

  366. all of a sudden

  367. if our

  368. water stream

  369. runs out

  370. or if we

  371. miss the mark

  372. or somehow

  373. we just give up

  374. is that it for us?

  375. is salvation over?

  376. what is the

  377. nature of

  378. faith?

  379. I think it's

  380. important for us

  381. to consider

  382. that

  383. what matters

  384. when it comes

  385. to faith

  386. isn't the

  387. amount of

  388. faith that we

  389. have

  390. we all know

  391. people that

  392. have unbelievable

  393. faith

  394. that it

  395. seems like

  396. all hell

  397. rages against

  398. them

  399. and yet

  400. they have

  401. this

  402. resolve

  403. that they're

  404. going to

  405. trust in

  406. the Lord

  407. and then

  408. we have

  409. other people

  410. in our

  411. lives

  412. maybe

  413. ourselves

  414. at times

  415. where

  416. it's

  417. like I

  418. stub my

  419. toe

  420. literally

  421. metaphorically

  422. and that's

  423. it

  424. I'm kind

  425. of done

  426. right

  427. I can't

  428. believe

  429. anymore

  430. it's like

  431. the straw

  432. that broke

  433. the camel's

  434. back

  435. and we

  436. have

  437. minuscule

  438. faith

  439. I think

  440. that's not

  441. the way

  442. that the

  443. Bible

  444. wants to

  445. commend us

  446. to think

  447. about faith

  448. but instead

  449. to think

  450. about the

  451. object that

  452. our faith

  453. is in

  454. classic

  455. example

  456. the person

  457. who

  458. is deathly

  459. afraid of

  460. flying

  461. deathly

  462. afraid of

  463. flying

  464. they get

  465. in the

  466. plane

  467. and maybe

  468. their faith

  469. and the

  470. integrity

  471. of the

  472. hull

  473. or

  474. the

  475. sobriety

  476. and focus

  477. and skill

  478. of the

  479. pilot

  480. it's

  481. like this

  482. okay

  483. they're

  484. constantly

  485. thinking

  486. this

  487. five hour

  488. flight

  489. to the

  490. west coast

  491. they're

  492. thinking

  493. what if

  494. there is

  495. the

  496. tiniest

  497. of cracks

  498. in the

  499. hull

  500. what if

  501. I don't

  502. know

  503. maybe

  504. the

  505. pilot

  506. had a

  507. couple

  508. to

  509. drink

  510. beforehand

  511. they're

  512. just

  513. constantly

  514. in

  515. doubt

  516. mode

  517. well

  518. whether

  519. or not

  520. they

  521. believe

  522. in

  523. the

  524. integrity

  525. of the

  526. plane

  527. the

  528. skill

  529. of the

  530. pilot

  531. matters

  532. in a

  533. sense

  534. matters

  535. not

  536. what matters

  537. is the

  538. object

  539. that they

  540. have got

  541. into

  542. this plane

  543. and that

  544. this plane

  545. is going to

  546. take them

  547. from point A

  548. to point B

  549. now compare

  550. that then

  551. to the

  552. person

  553. who is

  554. delusional

  555. who has

  556. an incredible

  557. amount

  558. of

  559. faith

  560. that

  561. you know

  562. they can

  563. fly

  564. and they're

  565. going to

  566. put it

  567. to the

  568. test

  569. they have

  570. on their

  571. kind of

  572. fake wings

  573. and they

  574. leap from

  575. a four story

  576. building

  577. doesn't matter

  578. their faith

  579. the degree

  580. of faith

  581. that they

  582. have

  583. they're so

  584. convinced

  585. that they

  586. have solved

  587. the problem

  588. of human

  589. flight

  590. it doesn't

  591. matter

  592. the object

  593. of their

  594. faith

  595. is waning

  596. it's

  597. nothing

  598. they fall

  599. they die

  600. or they get

  601. horribly hurt

  602. the object

  603. of our

  604. faith

  605. is the

  606. thing

  607. that

  608. matters

  609. the

  610. object

  611. of the

  612. faith

  613. is

  614. the

  615. thing

  616. that

  617. matters

  618. because

  619. the

  620. reality

  621. is

  622. that

  623. whether

  624. you are

  625. feeling

  626. this

  627. warmth

  628. towards

  629. the

  630. Lord

  631. now

  632. that

  633. by

  634. God's

  635. grace

  636. you have

  637. faith

  638. in him

  639. that he

  640. will get

  641. you

  642. through

  643. any

  644. issue

  645. eventually

  646. it

  647. will

  648. wane

  649. your

  650. faith

  651. will

  652. get

  653. shaky

  654. you will

  655. see

  656. something

  657. you will

  658. experience

  659. something

  660. you will

  661. get

  662. tired

  663. your

  664. faith

  665. will

  666. hold

  667. on

  668. by

  669. the

  670. slightest

  671. of

  672. threads

  673. but

  674. even

  675. still

  676. if

  677. your

  678. faith

  679. is

  680. in

  681. Christ

  682. if

  683. it's

  684. in

  685. the

  686. right

  687. object

  688. then

  689. you

  690. can

  691. trust

  692. that

  693. although

  694. you

  695. don't

  696. understand

  697. how

  698. it

  699. will

  700. work

  701. that

  702. Christ

  703. will

  704. hold

  705. you

  706. fast

  707. so

  708. what

  709. about

  710. doubt

  711. because

  712. James

    James 1 chapter mention

  713. chapter

  714. 1

  715. talks

  716. about

  717. how

  718. the

  719. doubting

  720. person

  721. this

  722. is a

  723. very

  724. terrible

  725. thing

  726. doubt

  727. is

  728. something

  729. that

  730. is

  731. wrong

  732. and

  733. actually

  734. contrary

  735. to

  736. the

  737. Christian

  738. life

  739. and

  740. I

  741. won't

  742. go

  743. into

  744. it

  745. in

  746. depth

  747. only

  748. to

  749. say

  750. that

  751. the

  752. doubt

  753. that

  754. James

  755. talks

  756. about

  757. is a

  758. functionally

  759. dead

  760. faith

  761. a

  762. faith

  763. that

  764. claims

  765. that

  766. all

  767. that

  768. claims

  769. all

  770. of

  771. Christianity

  772. without

  773. any

  774. of

  775. Christ

  776. who

  777. goes

  778. through

  779. the

  780. motions

  781. of

  782. what

  783. it

  784. is

  785. to

  786. be

  787. a

  788. Christian

  789. but

  790. really

  791. truly

  792. does

  793. not

  794. have

  795. a

  796. faith

  797. that

  798. is

  799. indicative

  800. of

  801. the

  802. work

  803. of

  804. the

  805. Holy

  806. Spirit

  807. in

  808. somebody's

  809. heart

  810. no

  811. what

  812. we have

  813. here

  814. when

  815. our

  816. faith

  817. wanes

  818. and yet

  819. it's

  820. still in

  821. Christ

  822. it's

  823. like

  824. that

  825. father

  826. who

  827. comes

  828. to

  829. Jesus

  830. who

  831. asks

  832. him

  833. to

  834. heal

  835. his

  836. son

  837. and

  838. Jesus

  839. he

  840. says

  841. to

  842. him

  843. listen

  844. you

  845. have

  846. to

  847. have

  848. faith

  849. and

  850. the

  851. guy

  852. says

  853. I

  854. believe

  855. help

  856. my

  857. unbelief

  858. that's

  859. the

  860. faith

  861. that

  862. is

  863. waning

  864. that

  865. it

  866. is

  867. this

  868. big

  869. that

  870. is

  871. the

  872. size

  873. of

  874. a

  875. mustard

  876. seed

  877. but

  878. it's

  879. in

  880. the

  881. right

  882. thing

  883. it's

  884. in

  885. the

  886. right

  887. object

  888. it's

  889. in

  890. the

  891. right

  892. person

  893. friends

  894. faith

  895. cannot

  896. be

  897. a

  898. feeling

  899. now

  900. it

  901. at

  902. times

  903. will

  904. feel

  905. as

  906. though

  907. we

  908. have

  909. faith

  910. but

  911. it

  912. can't

  913. be

  914. predominantly

  915. a

  916. feeling

  917. because

  918. we

  919. can

  920. be

  921. so

  922. easily

  923. swayed

  924. and

  925. then

  926. whether

  927. we

  928. keep

  929. faith

  930. or

  931. not

  932. becomes

  933. the

  934. functional

  935. barometer

  936. of our

  937. salvation

  938. but

  939. is

  940. that

  941. not

  942. another

  943. form

  944. of

  945. self

  946. righteousness

  947. that

  948. then

  949. our

  950. salvation

  951. rises

  952. and falls

  953. on how

  954. we

  955. feel

  956. on how

  957. we

  958. judge

  959. the

  960. faith

  961. that

  962. we

  963. have

  964. John

  965. Stott

  966. has been

  967. very

  968. helpful

  969. to me

  970. he was

  971. an

  972. Anglican

  973. minister

  974. in

  975. England

  976. he

  977. passed

  978. away

  979. in

  980. the

  981. 2010s

  982. but

  983. he

  984. says

  985. this

  986. of

  987. faith

  988. he

  989. says

  990. faith

  991. is

  992. the

  993. eye

  994. that

  995. looks

  996. to

  997. him

  998. the

  999. hand

  1000. that

  1001. receives

  1002. his

  1003. free

  1004. gift

  1005. the

  1006. mouth

  1007. that

  1008. drinks

  1009. the

  1010. living

  1011. water

  1012. which

  1013. is

  1014. to

  1015. say

  1016. that

  1017. faith

  1018. merely

  1019. receives

  1020. it

  1021. merely

  1022. receives

  1023. I can't

  1024. do

  1025. anything

  1026. on my

  1027. own

  1028. in

  1029. fact

  1030. I

  1031. can't

  1032. even

  1033. receive

  1034. !

  1035. very

  1036. well

  1037. I

  1038. believe

  1039. but

  1040. God

  1041. help

  1042. my

  1043. unbelief

  1044. this

  1045. is

  1046. true

  1047. faith

  1048. this

  1049. is

  1050. the

  1051. faith

  1052. of

  1053. scripture

  1054. true

  1055. faith

  1056. can only

  1057. receive

  1058. righteousness

  1059. it

  1060. can't

  1061. manufacture

  1062. it

  1063. and

  1064. it

  1065. can't

  1066. manufacture

  1067. it

  1068. because

  1069. of

  1070. the

  1071. second

  1072. essential

  1073. truth

  1074. the

  1075. second

  1076. essential

  1077. truth

  1078. is

  1079. this

  1080. is

  1081. that

  1082. the

  1083. righteousness

  1084. that God

  1085. gives

  1086. it's

  1087. a gift

  1088. of

  1089. grace

  1090. and

  1091. it's

  1092. far

  1093. greater

  1094. this

  1095. gift

  1096. and

  1097. it

  1098. far

  1099. surpasses

  1100. the

  1101. unrighteousness

  1102. of the

  1103. entire

  1104. human

  1105. race

  1106. and

  1107. everybody

  1108. here

  1109. today

  1110. read

  1111. with me

  1112. the

  1113. second

  1114. part

  1115. of

  1116. verse

  1117. 22

  1118. and

  1119. then

  1120. all

  1121. of

  1122. verse

  1123. 23

  1124. so

  1125. 22

  1126. the

  1127. second

  1128. half

  1129. of it

  1130. and

  1131. then

  1132. verse

  1133. 23

  1134. for

  1135. there

  1136. is

  1137. no

  1138. distinction

  1139. for

  1140. all

  1141. have

  1142. sinned

  1143. and

  1144. fall

  1145. short

  1146. of

  1147. the

  1148. glory

  1149. of

  1150. God

  1151. and

  1152. are

  1153. justified

  1154. by

  1155. his

  1156. grace

  1157. as

  1158. a

  1159. gift

  1160. through

  1161. the

  1162. redemption

  1163. that

  1164. is

  1165. in

  1166. Christ

  1167. Jesus

  1168. for

  1169. there

  1170. is

  1171. no

  1172. distinction

  1173. all

  1174. have

  1175. sinned

  1176. and

  1177. fallen

  1178. short

  1179. of

  1180. the

  1181. glory

  1182. of

  1183. God

  1184. how

  1185. do

  1186. we

  1187. fall

  1188. short

  1189. of

  1190. the

  1191. glory

  1192. of

  1193. God

  1194. now

  1195. the

  1196. apostle

  1197. Paul

  1198. has

  1199. made

  1200. that

  1201. clear

  1202. in

  1203. verses

  1204. again

  1205. chapter

  1206. 1

  1207. verse

  1208. 18

  1209. to

  1210. 320

  1211. but

  1212. I

  1213. think

  1214. it's

  1215. very

  1216. important

  1217. that

  1218. we

  1219. consider

  1220. what

  1221. it

  1222. says

  1223. here

  1224. in

  1225. our

  1226. section

  1227. of

  1228. scripture

  1229. how

  1230. do

  1231. we

  1232. fall

  1233. short

  1234. of

  1235. the

  1236. glory

  1237. of

  1238. God

  1239. two

  1240. massive

  1241. ways

  1242. one

  1243. following

  1244. from

  1245. the

  1246. other

  1247. the

  1248. first

  1249. is

  1250. we

  1251. fall

  1252. short

  1253. of

  1254. the

  1255. glory

  1256. of

  1257. God

  1258. in

  1259. our

  1260. being

  1261. of

  1262. who

  1263. we

  1264. are

  1265. the

  1266. fancy

  1267. pants

  1268. word

  1269. would

  1270. be

  1271. we

  1272. fall

  1273. short

  1274. of

  1275. the

  1276. glory

  1277. of

  1278. God

  1279. in

  1280. our

  1281. ontology

  1282. on

  1283. how

  1284. we

  1285. are

  1286. our

  1287. being

  1288. fall

  1289. short

  1290. of

  1291. the

  1292. glory

  1293. of

  1294. God

  1295. in

  1296. that

  1297. we

  1298. were

  1299. made

  1300. to

  1301. reflect

  1302. his

  1303. image

  1304. we

  1305. were

  1306. made

  1307. in

  1308. his

  1309. image

  1310. to

  1311. reflect

  1312. his

  1313. image

  1314. but

  1315. in

  1316. a

  1317. way

  1318. that

  1319. is

  1320. free

  1321. of

  1322. all

  1323. sin

  1324. and

  1325. blemish

  1326. but

  1327. this

  1328. is

  1329. no

  1330. longer

  1331. the

  1332. case

  1333. you

  1334. see

  1335. !

  1336. Genesis

  1337. 3

  1338. Man

  1339. Original

  1340. Sin

  1341. it

  1342. looms

  1343. large

  1344. over

  1345. the

  1346. entirety

  1347. of

  1348. Romans

  1349. and

  1350. especially

  1351. in

  1352. the

  1353. section

  1354. that

  1355. we

  1356. read

  1357. in

  1358. the

  1359. previous

  1360. past

  1361. weeks

  1362. how

  1363. could

  1364. we

  1365. properly

  1366. reflect

  1367. the

  1368. almighty

  1369. most

  1370. perfect

  1371. God

  1372. who

  1373. is

  1374. the

  1375. author

  1376. of

  1377. all

  1378. things

  1379. good

  1380. true

  1381. and

  1382. beautiful

  1383. if

  1384. we

  1385. ourselves

  1386. are

  1387. compromised

  1388. with

  1389. sin

  1390. we

  1391. fall

  1392. short

  1393. of

  1394. reflecting

  1395. the

  1396. glory

  1397. of

  1398. God

  1399. because

  1400. we

  1401. fall

  1402. short

  1403. of

  1404. as

  1405. perfect

  1406. standard

  1407. it's

  1408. as

  1409. if

  1410. we

  1411. were

  1412. a

  1413. clean

  1414. and

  1415. streak

  1416. free

  1417. mirror

  1418. that

  1419. was

  1420. designed

  1421. and made

  1422. to perfectly

  1423. reflect

  1424. the glory

  1425. of God

  1426. and

  1427. very

  1428. quickly

  1429. a bunch

  1430. of

  1431. fingerprint

  1432. smudges

  1433. were all

  1434. over this

  1435. mirror

  1436. maybe

  1437. the mirror

  1438. was smeared

  1439. with streaks

  1440. of mud

  1441. or maybe

  1442. it became

  1443. chipped

  1444. and cracked

  1445. all over

  1446. you see

  1447. the mirror

  1448. is still

  1449. a mirror

  1450. but it

  1451. has lost

  1452. its

  1453. integrity

  1454. it has

  1455. been

  1456. compromised

  1457. and this

  1458. leads to

  1459. the second

  1460. way we

  1461. fall short

  1462. of the

  1463. glory

  1464. of God

  1465. it's

  1466. not

  1467. just

  1468. in

  1469. our

  1470. being

  1471. but

  1472. because

  1473. we

  1474. are

  1475. compromised

  1476. in

  1477. our

  1478. being

  1479. that

  1480. means

  1481. our

  1482. purpose

  1483. of

  1484. which

  1485. is

  1486. to

  1487. glorify

  1488. God

  1489. that

  1490. is

  1491. compromised

  1492. as

  1493. well

  1494. so we

  1495. no longer

  1496. seek to

  1497. bring

  1498. God

  1499. glory

  1500. because

  1501. we

  1502. instead

  1503. bring

  1504. ourselves

  1505. glory

  1506. our

  1507. purpose

  1508. has

  1509. shifted

  1510. it is

  1511. not about

  1512. God

  1513. and lifting

  1514. up his

  1515. name

  1516. it is

  1517. about

  1518. Daniel

  1519. and lifting

  1520. up his

  1521. name

  1522. it's about

  1523. platforming

  1524. ourselves

  1525. if we're

  1526. to continue

  1527. the mirror

  1528. metaphor

  1529. a mirror

  1530. should not

  1531. necessarily

  1532. be a focal

  1533. point

  1534. as if

  1535. it were

  1536. an art

  1537. piece

  1538. and I

  1539. know

  1540. some

  1541. mirrors

  1542. are

  1543. beautiful

  1544. and they

  1545. work

  1546. as good

  1547. art

  1548. pieces

  1549. the

  1550. metaphor

  1551. isn't

  1552. perfect

  1553. but

  1554. predominantly

  1555. a mirror

  1556. what is

  1557. it supposed

  1558. to do

  1559. to reflect

  1560. the object

  1561. facing

  1562. it

  1563. however

  1564. if the

  1565. mirror

  1566. becomes

  1567. itself

  1568. the focal

  1569. point

  1570. then the

  1571. mirror

  1572. ceases

  1573. to have

  1574. the purpose

  1575. of a

  1576. mirror

  1577. the purpose

  1578. of the

  1579. mirror

  1580. is compromised

  1581. you see

  1582. the great

  1583. tragedy

  1584. is that

  1585. we have

  1586. redefined

  1587. what glory

  1588. is

  1589. we've

  1590. redefined

  1591. what it

  1592. means to

  1593. be human

  1594. in that

  1595. we were

  1596. designed

  1597. to be

  1598. image bearers

  1599. and to

  1600. bring glory

  1601. to God

  1602. and we

  1603. forget

  1604. who God

  1605. is

  1606. and instead

  1607. we

  1608. no longer

  1609. see what

  1610. God has

  1611. declared as

  1612. being the

  1613. high point

  1614. of what

  1615. is righteous

  1616. and good

  1617. true and

  1618. beautiful

  1619. glorious

  1620. which is

  1621. himself

  1622. instead

  1623. we see

  1624. the standard

  1625. as

  1626. you

  1627. and you

  1628. and you

  1629. and what we

  1630. do is we

  1631. compare ourselves

  1632. to other

  1633. people

  1634. okay

  1635. I make

  1636. enough money

  1637. and therefore

  1638. I am

  1639. satisfied

  1640. because I

  1641. make more

  1642. than the

  1643. average person

  1644. in my

  1645. position in

  1646. my neighborhood

  1647. or

  1648. I am

  1649. satisfied

  1650. with the

  1651. life I

  1652. live

  1653. in terms

  1654. of my

  1655. morality

  1656. because I'm

  1657. not a

  1658. train wreck

  1659. like her

  1660. or like

  1661. them

  1662. again

  1663. with a

  1664. mirror

  1665. metaphor

  1666. our mirror

  1667. is less

  1668. smudged

  1669. it's only

  1670. chipped in

  1671. the corner

  1672. there's no

  1673. mud on it

  1674. maybe there's

  1675. a bit of

  1676. dust

  1677. okay

  1678. we can

  1679. clean that

  1680. up

  1681. but

  1682. overall

  1683. relatively

  1684. speaking

  1685. my life

  1686. is

  1687. pretty

  1688. clear

  1689. pretty

  1690. clean

  1691. pretty

  1692. okay

  1693. pretty

  1694. intact

  1695. but the

  1696. point is

  1697. how

  1698. how

  1699. much

  1700. better

  1701. your

  1702. life

  1703. is

  1704. in

  1705. comparison

  1706. to

  1707. others

  1708. it's

  1709. actually

  1710. how

  1711. does

  1712. your

  1713. life

  1714. reflect

  1715. in

  1716. comparison

  1717. with

  1718. the

  1719. perfect

  1720. holy

  1721. and

  1722. glorious

  1723. righteous

  1724. God

  1725. that's

  1726. what the

  1727. scriptures

  1728. are really

  1729. talking

  1730. about

  1731. there

  1732. was a

  1733. bishop

  1734. in the

  1735. 19th

  1736. century

  1737. his name

  1738. was

  1739. Bishop

  1740. Wool

  1741. he was

  1742. the

  1743. bishop

  1744. of

  1745. Durham

  1746. and this

  1747. is what

  1748. he said

  1749. about

  1750. this

  1751. text

  1752. he says

  1753. quote

  1754. the harlot

  1755. the liar

  1756. the murderer

  1757. are

  1758. short

  1759. of

  1760. God's

  1761. glory

  1762. but so

  1763. are you

  1764. perhaps

  1765. they stand

  1766. at the

  1767. bottom

  1768. of a

  1769. mine

  1770. and you

  1771. on the

  1772. crest

  1773. of an

  1774. alp

  1775. but you

  1776. are as

  1777. little

  1778. able to

  1779. touch

  1780. the stars

  1781. as they

  1782. he's a

  1783. brilliant

  1784. brilliant

  1785. articulation

  1786. of the

  1787. difference

  1788. between

  1789. us

  1790. and

  1791. God

  1792. in terms

  1793. of

  1794. righteousness

  1795. so if

  1796. we are

  1797. constantly

  1798. falling

  1799. short

  1800. of our

  1801. purpose

  1802. because

  1803. of our

  1804. very

  1805. being

  1806. being

  1807. compromised

  1808. then how

  1809. are we

  1810. to be

  1811. sure that

  1812. the very

  1813. righteousness

  1814. of God

  1815. that is

  1816. given for

  1817. us

  1818. is

  1819. truly

  1820. going to

  1821. last

  1822. that it

  1823. won't

  1824. be

  1825. compromised

  1826. and this

  1827. will lead

  1828. to our

  1829. third and

  1830. final point

  1831. the three

  1832. comforting

  1833. words

  1834. of

  1835. verses

  1836. 24

  1837. and

  1838. 26

  1839. read

  1840. with

  1841. me

  1842. verses

  1843. 24

  1844. and

  1845. 26

  1846. we'll

  1847. actually

  1848. back up

  1849. into

  1850. verse

  1851. 22

  1852. for

  1853. there is

  1854. no

  1855. distinction

  1856. for

  1857. all

  1858. have

  1859. sinned

  1860. and

  1861. fallen

  1862. short

  1863. of

  1864. the

  1865. glory

  1866. of

  1867. God

  1868. verse

  1869. 24

  1870. and

  1871. are

  1872. justified

  1873. by

  1874. his

  1875. grace

  1876. as a

  1877. gift

  1878. through

  1879. the

  1880. redemption

  1881. that is

  1882. in

  1883. Christ

  1884. Jesus

  1885. whom

  1886. God

  1887. put

  1888. forward

  1889. as a

  1890. propitiation

  1891. by

  1892. his

  1893. blood

  1894. to be

  1895. received

  1896. by

  1897. faith

  1898. if

  1899. this

  1900. was to

  1901. show

  1902. his

  1903. righteousness

  1904. at the

  1905. present

  1906. time

  1907. so that

  1908. he

  1909. might

  1910. be

  1911. just

  1912. and

  1913. the

  1914. justifier

  1915. of

  1916. the

  1917. one

  1918. who

  1919. has

  1920. faith

  1921. in

  1922. Jesus

  1923. I'll

  1924. pause

  1925. really

  1926. quickly

  1927. and

  1928. just

  1929. to

  1930. say

  1931. there's

  1932. a

  1933. lot

  1934. happening

  1935. there

  1936. I was

  1937. talking

  1938. to

  1939. somebody

  1940. this

  1941. week

  1942. and

  1943. a

  1944. very

  1945. committed

  1946. Christian

  1947. that

  1948. said

  1949. this

  1950. is

  1951. a

  1952. word

  1953. salad

  1954. and

  1955. it's

  1956. hard

  1957. to

  1958. disagree

  1959. there's

  1960. a lot

  1961. going

  1962. on

  1963. there

  1964. and

  1965. it might

  1966. be

  1967. an

  1968. issue

  1969. of

  1970. translation

  1971. but

  1972. what

  1973. we're

  1974. going

  1975. to

  1976. do

  1977. to

  1978. try

  1979. to

  1980. make

  1981. sense

  1982. of

  1983. it

  1984. is

  1985. to

  1986. look

  1987. at

  1988. these

  1989. what

  1990. I

  1991. call

  1992. these

  1993. three

  1994. comforting

  1995. words

  1996. the

  1997. first

  1998. word

  1999. is

  2000. justification

  2001. verse 24

  2002. and

  2003. are

  2004. justified

  2005. by

  2006. his

  2007. grace

  2008. as

  2009. a

  2010. gift

  2011. through

  2012. the

  2013. redemption

  2014. that

  2015. is

  2016. in

  2017. Christ

  2018. Jesus

  2019. justification

  2020. it's

  2021. a big

  2022. word

  2023. it's

  2024. actually

  2025. a

  2026. very

  2027. important

  2028. word

  2029. when

  2030. it

  2031. !

  2032. comes

  2033. to

  2034. Romans

  2035. when

  2036. it

  2037. comes

  2038. to

  2039. our

  2040. salvation

  2041. justification

  2042. is a

  2043. declaration

  2044. of God

  2045. to us

  2046. that we

  2047. are no

  2048. longer

  2049. condemned

  2050. we

  2051. are no

  2052. longer

  2053. condemned

  2054. as

  2055. guilty

  2056. because

  2057. of our

  2058. sin

  2059. but

  2060. now

  2061. we

  2062. are

  2063. free

  2064. we

  2065. have

  2066. been

  2067. liberated

  2068. we

  2069. are no

  2070. longer

  2071. under

  2072. the

  2073. just

  2074. judgment

  2075. of

  2076. God

  2077. we

  2078. are

  2079. no

  2080. longer

  2081. condemned

  2082. as

  2083. unrighteous

  2084. for

  2085. we

  2086. have

  2087. been

  2088. given

  2089. the

  2090. righteousness

  2091. of

  2092. Christ

  2093. and

  2094. it

  2095. says

  2096. that

  2097. it

  2098. is

  2099. a

  2100. gift

  2101. of

  2102. grace

  2103. it

  2104. is

  2105. God

  2106. restoring

  2107. our

  2108. fallenness

  2109. so that

  2110. at the

  2111. end

  2112. of the

  2113. age

  2114. when we

  2115. meet

  2116. Christ

  2117. we

  2118. will

  2119. be

  2120. like

  2121. him

  2122. in

  2123. that

  2124. we

  2125. will

  2126. reflect

  2127. the

  2128. glory

  2129. of

  2130. God

  2131. as

  2132. he

  2133. already

  2134. intended

  2135. it

  2136. so

  2137. what

  2138. is

  2139. it

  2140. saying

  2141. it's

  2142. saying

  2143. that

  2144. one

  2145. day

  2146. we

  2147. will

  2148. stand

  2149. before

  2150. God

  2151. at

  2152. the

  2153. end

  2154. of

  2155. the

  2156. age

  2157. and

  2158. he

  2159. will

  2160. judge

  2161. us

  2162. perfect

  2163. righteous

  2164. holy

  2165. but

  2166. what's

  2167. interesting

  2168. here

  2169. is

  2170. Paul

  2171. isn't

  2172. saying

  2173. listen

  2174. we

  2175. need

  2176. to

  2177. just

  2178. trudge

  2179. through

  2180. until

  2181. the

  2182. end

  2183. of

  2184. the

  2185. age

  2186. he's

  2187. saying

  2188. that

  2189. reality

  2190. at

  2191. the

  2192. end

  2193. of

  2194. the

  2195. age

  2196. when

  2197. every

  2198. tear

  2199. is

  2200. wiped

  2201. every

  2202. bad

  2203. thing

  2204. is

  2205. reversed

  2206. that

  2207. is

  2208. our

  2209. reality

  2210. now

  2211. in

  2212. the

  2213. present

  2214. because

  2215. of

  2216. Christ

  2217. because

  2218. God

  2219. deems

  2220. it

  2221. so

  2222. and

  2223. this

  2224. is

  2225. what

  2226. it

  2227. means

  2228. to

  2229. be

  2230. justified

  2231. but

  2232. how

  2233. does

  2234. this

  2235. happen

  2236. because

  2237. as

  2238. reasonable

  2239. as it

  2240. may

  2241. seem

  2242. a

  2243. valid

  2244. pushback

  2245. could

  2246. be

  2247. that

  2248. such

  2249. a

  2250. justification

  2251. either

  2252. undermines

  2253. God's

  2254. righteousness

  2255. or

  2256. permits

  2257. our

  2258. unrighteousness

  2259. this is

  2260. the stuff

  2261. of a

  2262. corrupt

  2263. or

  2264. incompetent

  2265. judge

  2266. I mean

  2267. could you

  2268. imagine

  2269. we go

  2270. before a

  2271. judge

  2272. we are

  2273. guilty

  2274. he says

  2275. I want

  2276. you to

  2277. walk

  2278. okay

  2279. I'm

  2280. just

  2281. erasing

  2282. this

  2283. I'm

  2284. taking

  2285. the

  2286. charges

  2287. rip

  2288. rip

  2289. rip

  2290. and by

  2291. the

  2292. way

  2293. I'm

  2294. going

  2295. to

  2296. put

  2297. a

  2298. word

  2299. in

  2300. because

  2301. of

  2302. course

  2303. there's

  2304. going

  2305. to

  2306. be

  2307. an

  2308. appeal

  2309. to

  2310. a

  2311. higher

  2312. court

  2313. listen

  2314. that

  2315. guy's

  2316. my

  2317. friend

  2318. too

  2319. I'll

  2320. take

  2321. care

  2322. of

  2323. it

  2324. we would

  2325. say

  2326. that's

  2327. a

  2328. dereliction

  2329. of

  2330. justice

  2331. is that

  2332. what's

  2333. happening

  2334. here

  2335. you know

  2336. even more

  2337. than that

  2338. throughout

  2339. the old

  2340. testament

  2341. God

  2342. repeatedly

  2343. states

  2344. that he

  2345. will

  2346. justify

  2347. the

  2348. righteous

  2349. and

  2350. condemn

  2351. the

  2352. wicked

  2353. proverbs

    Proverbs 17:15

  2354. 17

  2355. verse

  2356. 15

  2357. says

  2358. actually

  2359. even

  2360. even worse

  2361. than that

  2362. he who

  2363. justifies

  2364. the

  2365. wicked

  2366. and

  2367. he who

  2368. condemns

  2369. the

  2370. righteous

  2371. are both

  2372. alike

  2373. an

  2374. abomination

  2375. of the

  2376. Lord

  2377. so what

  2378. on earth

  2379. is happening

  2380. okay

  2381. Paul

  2382. is he

  2383. contradicting

  2384. the old

  2385. testament

  2386. because it

  2387. seems

  2388. that what

  2389. God

  2390. is doing

  2391. here

  2392. at least

  2393. by

  2394. Paul's

  2395. explanation

  2396. is that

  2397. he is

  2398. making

  2399. righteous

  2400. the wicked

  2401. he is

  2402. justifying

  2403. those

  2404. that should

  2405. be rightly

  2406. condemned

  2407. and

  2408. previously

  2409. it says

  2410. that this

  2411. is

  2412. a

  2413. problem

  2414. so

  2415. what

  2416. on earth

  2417. is

  2418. justification

  2419. and how

  2420. is it

  2421. held

  2422. together

  2423. I would

  2424. say this

  2425. it would

  2426. be a

  2427. fantastic

  2428. objection

  2429. and it

  2430. would be

  2431. very clear

  2432. that the

  2433. apostle

  2434. Paul

  2435. is

  2436. contradicting

  2437. what the

  2438. old

  2439. testament

  2440. says

  2441. if it

  2442. wasn't

  2443. for our

  2444. second

  2445. comfortable

  2446. word

  2447. we'll read

  2448. verses

  2449. 24 and

  2450. 25

  2451. and are

  2452. justified

  2453. by his

  2454. grace

  2455. as a

  2456. gift

  2457. through

  2458. the

  2459. redemption

  2460. that is

  2461. in

  2462. Christ

  2463. Jesus

  2464. whom

  2465. God

  2466. put

  2467. forward

  2468. as

  2469. a

  2470. propitiation

  2471. by his

  2472. blood

  2473. to be

  2474. received

  2475. by faith

  2476. this is

  2477. the key

  2478. word

  2479. in this

  2480. context

  2481. upon

  2482. which

  2483. the

  2484. entire

  2485. verse

  2486. in this

  2487. whole

  2488. section

  2489. rises

  2490. and

  2491. falls

  2492. and

  2493. therefore

  2494. justification

  2495. is

  2496. a

  2497. massive

  2498. massive

  2499. contradiction

  2500. in God's

  2501. justice

  2502. and mercy

  2503. if it

  2504. was not

  2505. for this

  2506. word

  2507. propitiation

  2508. so what

  2509. is it

  2510. I think

  2511. it's

  2512. really

  2513. helpful

  2514. to

  2515. understand

  2516. what

  2517. it

  2518. is

  2519. not

  2520. there

  2521. are

  2522. so

  2523. many

  2524. different

  2525. and good

  2526. Bible

  2527. translations

  2528. out there

  2529. into

  2530. English

  2531. some

  2532. of

  2533. maybe

  2534. the

  2535. not

  2536. so

  2537. great

  2538. translations

  2539. for this

  2540. section

  2541. will talk

  2542. about

  2543. God

  2544. wiping

  2545. away

  2546. sin

  2547. or

  2548. the

  2549. fancy

  2550. pants

  2551. word

  2552. is

  2553. expiate

  2554. sin

  2555. this

  2556. idea

  2557. that

  2558. all he

  2559. is

  2560. doing

  2561. he

  2562. is

  2563. seeing

  2564. our

  2565. ledger

  2566. it

  2567. is

  2568. full

  2569. of

  2570. red

  2571. he

  2572. is

  2573. taking

  2574. out

  2575. the

  2576. red

  2577. okay

  2578. he

  2579. is

  2580. just

  2581. wiping

  2582. away

  2583. he

  2584. is

  2585. dry

  2586. erase

  2587. erasing

  2588. our

  2589. white

  2590. board

  2591. okay

  2592. and that's

  2593. it

  2594. but it

  2595. can't

  2596. be

  2597. just

  2598. that

  2599. propitiation

  2600. isn't

  2601. simply

  2602. just

  2603. wiping

  2604. away

  2605. the

  2606. red

  2607. ink

  2608. or

  2609. overlooking

  2610. our

  2611. wrong

  2612. doings

  2613. I

  2614. think

  2615. it's

  2616. important

  2617. to consider

  2618. this

  2619. because

  2620. if it

  2621. were

  2622. merely

  2623. that

  2624. God

  2625. would

  2626. not

  2627. be

  2628. just

  2629. why

  2630. because

  2631. sin

  2632. would

  2633. go

  2634. unpunished

  2635. that

  2636. would

  2637. also

  2638. suggest

  2639. that

  2640. God

  2641. is

  2642. at

  2643. most

  2644. just

  2645. irritated

  2646. with

  2647. sin

  2648. but that

  2649. he

  2650. wouldn't

  2651. have

  2652. a

  2653. wrathful

  2654. hatred

  2655. against

  2656. sin

  2657. and yet

  2658. throughout

  2659. scripture

  2660. God

  2661. his anger

  2662. burns

  2663. against

  2664. sin

  2665. his wrath

  2666. is

  2667. kindled

  2668. is

  2669. kindled

  2670. against

  2671. sin

  2672. he

  2673. must

  2674. justly

  2675. punish

  2676. evil

  2677. because

  2678. he

  2679. is

  2680. righteous

  2681. and

  2682. to

  2683. do

  2684. otherwise

  2685. isn't

  2686. just

  2687. God

  2688. being

  2689. unjust

  2690. it

  2691. is

  2692. to

  2693. deny

  2694. himself

  2695. and

  2696. God

  2697. can't

  2698. deny

  2699. himself

  2700. so

  2701. to

  2702. propitiate

  2703. means

  2704. to

  2705. avert

  2706. God's

  2707. just

  2708. anger

  2709. against

  2710. sin

  2711. by

  2712. satisfying

  2713. his

  2714. perfect

  2715. justice

  2716. through

  2717. paying

  2718. the full

  2719. penalty

  2720. the full

  2721. cost

  2722. of our

  2723. sin

  2724. that

  2725. is

  2726. what

  2727. it

  2728. is

  2729. except

  2730. that

  2731. if

  2732. we

  2733. were

  2734. to

  2735. pay

  2736. this

  2737. penalty

  2738. ourselves

  2739. we

  2740. would

  2741. be

  2742. utterly

  2743. undone

  2744. we

  2745. would

  2746. still

  2747. be

  2748. in a

  2749. hopeless

  2750. state

  2751. but

  2752. because

  2753. God

  2754. isn't

  2755. just

  2756. perfectly

  2757. just

  2758. he

  2759. is

  2760. also

  2761. perfectly

  2762. merciful

  2763. it

  2764. means

  2765. we

  2766. have

  2767. hope

  2768. and

  2769. this

  2770. ties

  2771. into

  2772. the

  2773. intro

  2774. when I

  2775. talked

  2776. about

  2777. the

  2778. inability

  2779. to

  2780. embrace

  2781. and

  2782. enjoy

  2783. mercy

  2784. and

  2785. justice

  2786. in

  2787. this

  2788. life

  2789. because

  2790. it

  2791. is

  2792. something

  2793. that

  2794. only

  2795. God

  2796. can

  2797. truly

  2798. do

  2799. propitiation

  2800. what it

  2801. does

  2802. is

  2803. it

  2804. recognizes

  2805. that

  2806. we

  2807. are

  2808. sinful

  2809. people

  2810. under

  2811. the

  2812. righteous

  2813. anger

  2814. of

  2815. God

  2816. and

  2817. therefore

  2818. it

  2819. encompasses

  2820. both

  2821. God's

  2822. forgiveness

  2823. of sins

  2824. and

  2825. reconciliation

  2826. with

  2827. God

  2828. this

  2829. is

  2830. where

  2831. the

  2832. cross

  2833. becomes

  2834. central

  2835. only

  2836. at

  2837. the

  2838. cross

  2839. of

  2840. Christ

  2841. where

  2842. the

  2843. perfect

  2844. savior

  2845. shed

  2846. his

  2847. blood

  2848. for

  2849. us

  2850. can

  2851. God's

  2852. mercy

  2853. and

  2854. his

  2855. justice

  2856. be

  2857. fulfilled

  2858. at the

  2859. same

  2860. time

  2861. this is

  2862. what

  2863. Paul

  2864. is

  2865. saying

  2866. when

  2867. he

  2868. says

  2869. that

  2870. God

  2871. is

  2872. both

  2873. the

  2874. just

  2875. and

  2876. the

  2877. justifier

  2878. in

  2879. verse

  2880. 26

  2881. God has

  2882. not set

  2883. aside

  2884. his

  2885. righteous

  2886. wrath

  2887. instead

  2888. he has

  2889. directed

  2890. it

  2891. towards

  2892. himself

  2893. in

  2894. Christ

  2895. the

  2896. judge

  2897. not

  2898. skipping

  2899. over

  2900. justice

  2901. he says

  2902. you are

  2903. rightly

  2904. condemned

  2905. but

  2906. but

  2907. even

  2908. more

  2909. than

  2910. that

  2911. what

  2912. does

  2913. it

  2914. mean

  2915. it

  2916. means

  2917. I'm

  2918. going

  2919. to

  2920. take

  2921. on

  2922. the

  2923. punishment

  2924. I'm

  2925. going

  2926. to

  2927. wipe

  2928. away

  2929. the

  2930. sins

  2931. but

  2932. I'm

  2933. also

  2934. going

  2935. to

  2936. reconcile

  2937. you

  2938. to

  2939. myself

  2940. how

  2941. because

  2942. now

  2943. you

  2944. have

  2945. the

  2946. righteousness

  2947. of

  2948. Christ

  2949. that

  2950. is

  2951. given

  2952. to

  2953. you

  2954. the

  2955. cross

  2956. is

  2957. central

  2958. it

  2959. is

  2960. central

  2961. to

  2962. what

  2963. it

  2964. means

  2965. to

  2966. be

  2967. !

2968. reconciled to God, to have our sins dealt with. So in the cross we have justice, perfect justice,

2969. and perfect mercy meeting. Only God is truly righteous, only he is perfect, only he is consistent

2970. in everything he does, only he is true and without fault or lie, so therefore only God can satisfy

2971. the righteousness that he demands, and yet here we have Christ who is also fully man, he is our head,

2972. he is our representative, and he dies upon the cross in our place as our representative, so then, and we're

2973. not even going to touch this, but this is why again the incarnation of Christ is key to all of it.

2974. But why not do this work of salvation at the very moment sin enters the world? I think it's a good

2975. question because we read Genesis 3, sin enters the world, and then it's centuries and millennia that

2976. continue and sin grows and festers and seems to be undealt with and unpunished.

2977. Why does God wait so long? And is his waiting not dealing with that sin? Is it not proof that God,

2978. he's actually not as just as he says he is? That he condemns some and let others go unpunished?

2979. And this, friends, leads to our third and final word of comfort.

2980. Look at verses 24 and 25 with me.

  2981. We won't read 26, just 24 and 25.

2982. And are justified by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put

2983. forward as a propitiation by his blood to be received by faith. This was to show, and that's our word, but

2984. show maybe not, might not be the best translation. Maybe better to say demonstrated, okay?

2985. This was to demonstrate God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former

2986. sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and justifier of the

2987. one who has faith in Jesus. God's righteousness is demonstrated in his patience. That's what Paul is

2988. referring to in his divine forbearance. You see, God is vindicated. He is merciful. In fact, he is so

2989. merciful that the penalty for all the sins and the wickedness, it was delayed. And he is so perfectly

2990. just that, and that his justice was so perfectly realized that all the sins that had ever been

2991. committed, they were placed and laid upon Christ. So it's not just that the righteousness of Christ

2992. was where justice and mercy met. It's where God displayed how merciful and how just he was.

2993. Nothing went unpunished. Justice and mercy perfectly demonstrated. So as a summary, to put it all together,

2994. and it is thick and it is dense, but it is so important to our faith. So to put it all together,

2995. God demonstrates his perfect mercy and justice by delaying the penalty of all sins of all time

2996. until Christ came. And then when Christ came, he laid upon him the just judgment so that God's holy

2997. wrath is satisfied and we are justified, clothed in a righteousness that is foreign to us, and it is all

2998. a gift of God's grace. And friends, this is what the gospel is. This is what redemption is.

2999. This is what makes Christianity so unique. Because number one, it's honest about who we are,

3000. and it proclaims a God that we could not even fathom how good and grand and glorious he truly is.

3001. This is the only way mercy and justice can exist harmoniously.

3002. The late Tim Keller, he says it this way, God gave himself, God himself gave himself to save us from himself.

3003. Let's end with this. Throughout this section and in the section that follows, starting in verse 27,

3004. we see constantly faith. If you go through it and just look how many times faith is mentioned.

3005. By faith, those who believe, by faith, faith, faith in, constantly. Faith is recognized, faith is proclaimed.

3006. Verse 28, for we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

3007. And I think it's said so many times because we are so prone to have misplaced faith.

3008. This can't be as good as it seems. I have to do something. I have to take credit for something.

3009. I have to be shown to be worthy of something. And how do we do that?

3010. With our own strength, by our own merit, by our own ingenuity, by our own beauty, by our own goodness.

3011. Or we throw up our hands in hopelessness and we say, I'm not worthy.

3012. I can't do it. And instead of looking to Christ, we fall into despair.

3013. This text instead is saying, put your faith in Christ.

3014. It doesn't have to be like 100% perfect, redlining faith all your days.

3015. But put it in the right object, friends.

3016. Every other object will crumble.

3017. It will not support the weight of your hopes and your desires.

3018. And the reality is, even if you found something that seemed to be a comparable object, as Christ is,

3019. which doesn't exist, but say you did.

3020. You would only boast in it and be proud.

3021. And you yourself would not be a source of blessing.

3022. But you would be somebody who is like a black hole, where life revolves around you.

3023. People exist for your purpose.

3024. No, put your faith in Christ.

3025. For we hold that one is justified by faith, apart from works of the law.

3026. Find your comfort in the doctrines of God, of justification, of propitiation.

3027. Trusting that God has demonstrated his righteousness and he gives it to you by faith as a gift.
