  1. Some of you, if you've been in the evangelical world for some time, would have been, are familiar rather, with John Piper, the pastor and theologian who led Bethlehem Baptist in Minneapolis for decades.

  2. I bring him up just because, as we are going through Romans, we are in chapter 5. We've been in Romans for a few months now. John Piper started his sermon series in Romans in 1996, and he ended it in, I think, 2004.

  3. It was something like 8 1⁄2 years. I might be getting the exact years wrong, but he spent 8 1⁄2 years in the book of Romans.

  4. 225 sermons to cover 443 verses. Wild. He crawled through each verse, parsing out the grammar and words and spending a ton of time just digging into this book of the Apostle Paul.

  5. So, going into Romans, I thought about John Piper quite a bit. I thought, how on earth did he do this? And maybe more importantly, why on earth would he do this?

  6. I mean, to take your time to go through almost verse by verse, you know, less than two verses per sermon on average.

  7. You know, you lose the flow of a letter, right? This is a letter, first and foremost, written to a group of people to be read in one shot.

  8. Nobody gets a letter from grandma or gets a letter from a friend. I don't know if anybody still is into pen pals.

  9. But you don't parse it out and read line by line, word by word, digging deep into the grammar.

  10. Nevertheless, it's God's word, and every word counts and matters.

  11. But still, going into Romans, I'm like, why on earth would you do that?

  12. And then I got to chapter 5, which we were in last week and we continue on in this.

  13. And you realize that the Apostle Paul has written a letter to a church, of course,

  14. but he has written something of a theological treatise that is unbelievably dense and so theologically rich.

  15. And every sentence, every word, the grammar that he has chosen, everything about it is robust and full

  16. and absolutely pregnant with meaning, allusions to the past, typology.

  17. He touches on creation, what it means to be human, who God is, how he has interacted with us,

  18. what salvation is, on and on and on and on.

  19. So, get to chapter 5, I get it.

  20. Now, just if anybody's worried, we are not going to spend the next, say, 4 years or 5 years in Romans.

  21. Our hope is to have it finished up in at least two more chunks.

  22. But we're going on, I'd say, a pretty good pace.

  23. Nevertheless, Romans chapter 5, we're in the second part this morning, starting in verse 12.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  24. And it will help us, this chapter and this section of this chapter,

  25. will help us to understand how very deep and pervasive sin truly is.

  26. Now, we've touched on sin, but Paul is going to explain to us the genesis of sin

  27. and why it isn't just a problem that affects some,

  28. but it is at the very core of what it means to live the human life in this world.

  29. He will also tell us, in light of that sin, that pervasiveness of sin, the depth of sin,

  30. just how glorious the grace of God is.

  31. It's an incredible chapter.

  32. We will do our best to read it and wrestle through it,

  33. but without a doubt, we will leave things unexplained.

  34. But that's just going to be the nature of how we're going to go through this second half of chapter 5.

  35. The text breaks up quite nicely and quite easily into three sections,

  36. which is always good for the preacher.

  37. All of these sections address either Adam or Jesus or both,

  38. either comparing them with their similarities or contrasting them how they are different.

  39. So it'll break up like this.

  40. First point, verses 12 to 14, we'll look at Adam and sin.

  41. The second portion, verses 15 to 17, we'll look at Christ and grace.

  42. And then finally, the remaining three verses, 18 to 21,

  43. we'll look at how Christ is the greater Adam.

  44. And I'll explain what that means shortly.

  45. So if you have a scripture journal, you can turn with me to Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  46. We'll be at the bottom of page 24.

  47. There are still, I think we have some Bibles.

  48. Now, normally I'd say just point you back at the welcome table.

  49. The welcome table is out those doors and around the side,

  50. but you can go at any time to grab one and follow along.

  51. It would be a great help if you could follow along with the text as we read it.

  52. So before we open up into verse 12 and 13,

  53. a bit of a reminder of what we looked at last week in chapter 5, verses 1 to 11.

  54. In it, last week, Paul explained how the reconciliation that God offers through Christ,

  55. how it came about.

  56. And he contrasts how sin entered the world.

  57. And he talked about suffering.

  58. And in the end, how we can expect, because of what Christ has done,

  59. to live a life that is full of glory.

  60. In this section, he's going to continue on with this line of argumentation.

  61. And he connects it by anticipating a potential objection.

  62. What's interesting here, before I read verses 12 and a portion of 13,

  63. is that Paul jumps into this explanation where he's anticipating an objection.

  64. And it's as if he is contrasting how sin came through the world by one man.

  65. We'll read shortly.

  66. But then it's like he stops.

  67. And he stops midway through his compare and contrast here.

  68. See if you can pick it up with me.

  69. Look at verse 12.

  70. Therefore, and that's therefore connects us with 5, 1 to 11.

  71. Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man,

  72. and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned.

  73. And then verse 13.

  74. For sin indeed was in the world before the law was given.

  75. I'll pause quickly there.

  76. Did you catch that?

  77. So normally you'd say something like,

  78. just as sin came into the world through one man,

  79. so, and then you contrast it with, well, we'll see what Paul will contrast it to.

  80. But what he doesn't do is he doesn't complete his compare and contrast.

  81. Right off of that in verse 13.

  82. Paul breaks from this comparison to address this objection.

  83. How on earth is it possible for sin and death to spread to all people through one man?

  84. So he's about to compare and contrast.

  85. And then it's like he hammers on the brakes,

  86. realizing how audacious and potentially offensive this statement is.

  87. And he's going to take some time to explain it for us.

  88. How on earth is it possible for sin and death to spread to all people through one man?

  89. It's a real objection in the first century.

  90. What's interesting is that this objection persists today.

  91. To understand it, we need to understand what happened with Adam and do a bit of homework.

  92. Now, we touched on this in a previous sermon,

  93. and this is where this letter is so theologically dense.

  94. So I'll try to sum it up in a paragraph or two.

  95. What Paul is referring to is what Christians have called original sin or the fall.

  96. It's standard across the Western church, for sure.

  97. Original sin, that moment where the idyllic life that God created for humanity came crashing down

  98. because Adam tried to reverse the roles.

  99. Instead of understanding him as a creature, a creation of God,

  100. and God as the uncreated one,

  101. Adam as the vassal,

  102. God as the Lord,

  103. Adam tried to reverse this.

  104. He tried to make himself in the place of God as Lord,

  105. himself as the infinite one,

  106. and God as something else.

  107. Now, it turns out that something else is not who God is

  108. and not who the scriptures communicate God to be.

  109. So what we have in the garden is the complete breakdown

  110. and the unleashing of a chain reaction where sin enters the world.

  111. Where Adam no longer worships God,

  112. no longer participates in the stewardship of God's creation,

  113. no more do we see a deep, personal, vulnerable, loving, intimate relationship between God and man.

  114. Instead, this chain reaction comes.

  115. Sin enters the world,

  116. and then death, both in a physical and a spiritual sense,

  117. spread to all people because all have sinned.

  118. The question that is important for us to ask

  119. is whether we are sinful,

  120. is whether we are all sinful,

  121. and by extension,

  122. are we acquainted with death because we sin like Adam,

  123. or because we sinned in and with Adam?

  124. Stick with me,

  125. because this is where I think it's helpful to have a handle on some Greek,

  126. which I don't have the greatest handle on,

  127. but I have some great commentaries that help me with this.

  128. So, here's the question again.

  129. Do we sin,

  130. are we sinful because we are sinning like Adam,

  131. or because we sinned in and with him?

  132. If it's the former,

  133. then this objection seems to be easily answered.

  134. Because if death is a result of sin,

  135. and we all sin like Adam,

  136. then we are all deserving of death.

  137. But that is not actually what the text says.

  138. It says that sin and death came to all because we all have sinned.

  139. So, what is happening?

  140. Again, it's helpful if we have a handle on the grammar,

  141. but just to sum it up quickly,

  142. Paul is telling us that all people sinned in one act in the past.

  143. He is saying that the sin that makes us sinners

  144. aren't because we continue on a lifestyle of sin,

  145. which we do,

  146. but because in some way,

  147. in some fashion,

  148. we sinned in the past.

  149. And the verbiage that he uses,

  150. the tense he uses,

  151. is a tense that conveys

  152. a completed act in the past.

  153. Okay?

  154. It's a past sin.

  155. And whether or not it pours into the future,

  156. that's a side issue.

  157. But what Paul is saying is that we are all under sin,

  158. all subject to death,

  159. because we sinned in the past.

  160. We participate in Adam's one sin.

  161. And this one sin unleashed death into the world.

  162. We are active participants with Adam.

  163. Now, Paul's going to continue on here

  164. to explain it.

  165. But first,

  166. if it seems awkward

  167. and kind of nitpicky,

  168. in the original language,

  169. the original hearers,

  170. it would have seemed just as awkward.

  171. Okay?

  172. You don't talk about somebody

  173. who lives today

  174. and talk about how they have sinned

  175. hundreds, thousands of years prior.

  176. That's not something you'd say

  177. in the first century.

  178. It's not something you'd say today.

  179. But Paul is deliberately using

  180. this past tense

  181. to describe what's happening here.

  182. So anyways,

  183. Paul continues on

  184. to build on this shocking truth

  185. in the next section.

  186. Read with me 13 to 14.

  187. And then we'll try to unpack this a bit more.

  188. For sin indeed was in the world

  189. before the law was given,

  190. but sin is not counted

  191. where there is no law.

  192. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses

  193. even over those whose sinning

  194. was not like the transgression of Adam,

  195. who was a type of the one

  196. who was to come.

  197. Sin and death do not come

  198. when the law is given but before.

  199. Paul is not saying that sin

  200. does not exist unless there is a law.

  201. What he is simply saying

  202. is that the law,

  203. which comes later,

  204. simply it shows us

  205. in a more explicit way

  206. what sin looks like.

  207. But what he is saying here

  208. is that even though

  209. there wasn't a law,

  210. wrongdoing existed.

  211. And we know that

  212. because death, Paul says,

  213. reigned from Adam to Moses,

  214. meaning the time

  215. before the law was given.

  216. Now if you are unfamiliar

  217. with the biblical story,

  218. I'll try to do a really quick

  219. 30-second summary.

  220. Adam and Eve fall.

  221. Abraham is promised.

  222. Now we looked at Abraham

  223. a couple weeks ago, right,

  224. in chapter 4.

  225. A bunch of other

  226. really important stuff happens.

  227. Israel goes into Egyptian slavery.

  228. God saves them after 400 years,

  229. brings them out to the desert,

  230. on the way to the promised land,

  231. and sometime in between

  232. his salvation out of slavery

  233. and into the promised land,

  234. God gives Israel a law.

  235. Okay?

  236. I hope that kind of situates you.

  237. That's all I'm going to say about it.

  238. We can talk afterwards.

  239. But at that time in between

  240. Adam and the giving of the law,

  241. it's not as if

  242. this idyllic life continued,

  243. or there wasn't wrongdoing,

  244. or there wasn't sin.

  245. No, it certainly did exist.

  246. The law came afterwards.

  247. The law only accentuated

  248. or made explicit

  249. what already was happening

  250. in the history of God's people

  251. and in the world.

  252. So, even without the law,

  253. that explicitly stipulates God's will,

  254. explicitly stipulates

  255. what is right and wrong,

  256. all people from every place

  257. and every culture,

  258. are guilty of sin.

  259. For the sin we are guilty of

  260. was in and through Adam,

  261. and it means that death

  262. and everything associated with death

  263. reigns over the just and the unjust.

  264. The really, really nice people in your life,

  265. the terribly rude people in your life.

  266. The young, the old,

  267. the men, the women,

  268. everybody that you know,

  269. everybody that you know is touched

  270. and operates under sin and death.

  271. You see, we fall prey to this false promise

  272. that what is really needed

  273. is more education.

  274. You see, education is the problem.

  275. We need to get people out of ignorance

  276. and into knowledge,

  277. and then life will get better.

  278. Or maybe it's the alleviation of suffering.

  279. People, when they're suffering,

  280. when poverty happens,

  281. they get desperate.

  282. That's when they commit the sinful acts.

  283. By the way, that's all true,

  284. by and large.

  285. Maybe the problem is

  286. we haven't achieved enough progress.

  287. We don't have enough wealth.

  288. There's not enough relational harmony.

  289. You know what?

  290. Our roads are just terrible.

  291. Have you driven down Merrillville?

  292. It's horrendous.

  293. They'll drive anybody bananas.

  294. So we need good infrastructure.

  295. We need safety regulations.

  296. So on and so forth.

  297. The list continues and continues.

  298. And these things are excellent,

  299. and they're worthy of pursuits.

  300. And they make the world we live in,

  301. the city that we belong,

  302. a more functional, good,

  303. and safe and comfortable place to live.

  304. I don't want to downplay any of that at all.

  305. These things are excellent,

  306. and they're worthy of our pursuit.

  307. But this text tells us

  308. that the human problem of sin and death

  309. is far greater than any solution

  310. that we might come up with.

  311. It is so widespread and so pervasive

  312. because it goes all the way back to the beginning,

  313. to our origin.

  314. In fact, sin and death,

  315. it's a key part of our origin story.

  316. Connected to Adam himself,

  317. first father.

  318. Such sin and death,

  319. it is what marks us as human beings.

  320. But even so,

  321. why and how did we sin in and through Adam?

  322. I don't think I've answered that question yet.

  323. We get a clue in the latter half,

  324. especially later on in verses 18.

  325. But it's a good question

  326. that can be a very difficult one

  327. for us Westerners to grasp

  328. because we have a very heavy emphasis

  329. on individualism and autonomy.

  330. Paul tells us that Adam,

  331. especially at the tail end of verse 14,

  332. that Adam was a type of the one

  333. who was to come.

  334. So what is a type,

  335. and what is he talking about?

  336. In the Bible,

  337. typology is a very important way

  338. to read the Scriptures.

  339. It can get overblown

  340. and you can find types everywhere.

  341. But a type simply is

  342. something that, say, happens,

  343. especially in the Old Testament,

  344. that is a shadow of something to come.

  345. It's almost like a trailer

  346. of something to come.

  347. If you're, I don't know,

  348. do people watch trailers anymore?

  349. It's like there's a trailer

  350. that comes out,

  351. it gives you a taste

  352. of what the movie will be like,

  353. but you're not going to get

  354. the full picture of what that movie is

  355. unless you go to see the movie.

  356. The type is like that.

  357. Adam is a type.

  358. So what is he a type of?

  359. We'll get into this

  360. in a bit more depth,

  361. but Adam is a representative for us.

  362. Now, the type of one is to come,

  363. we'll see, is Christ.

  364. But what Paul is referring to here

  365. is that Adam is our representative head.

  366. He is the one who represents us

  367. in the same way that an MP

  368. represents you in the commons,

  369. or if you are a part of a union.

  370. A union rep represents you

  371. in a collective bargaining situation.

  372. Adam is our representative.

  373. He is our head.

  374. We are in solidarity with him,

  375. so what he does

  376. is imputed or counted to us.

  377. So, if you guys remember,

  378. we've looked at this a little bit

  379. back in chapter 3,

  380. but here's the problem,

  381. and this is where the rub is for us.

  382. The difference with Adam

  383. is that unlike being represented

  384. by an MP or by a union rep,

  385. is that you don't have agency

  386. in the matter.

  387. The scriptures are telling you

  388. that you can't move

  389. to a different constituency

  390. and change your MP,

  391. or vote him or her out

  392. at the next election.

  393. You can't vote Adam out

  394. of your life.

  395. You can't join another union

  396. or just quit your job

  397. and go into a different industry.

  398. Adam represents you

  399. whether you like it or not.

  400. He is your representative head.

  401. We do not have agency in the matter.

  402. But even if we could have

  403. a better representative,

  404. maybe we could pick

  405. our own representative.

  406. Maybe we would be

  407. our own representative

  408. who's going to speak for me?

  409. I'm going to speak for me.

  410. Do you think you could do

  411. better than Adam?

  412. It's a very important question

  413. because God is the one

  414. who gave us Adam

  415. as a representative head.

  416. He is the one

  417. who made the best possible

  418. environment for human beings

  419. to flourish.

  420. Adam was without sin.

  421. He was without blemish.

  422. He didn't have a history

  423. that he was trying to hide.

  424. He wasn't lacking

  425. in any kind of way.

  426. He was the perfect human being.

  427. He was the best of us.

  428. Okay?

  429. He was the best of us.

  430. And if he fell

  431. as our representative head,

  432. could we truly find

  433. a better one?

  434. It's an interesting question

  435. to wrestle through

  436. because if we are frustrated

  437. with what Paul is saying here

  438. that we don't have a say

  439. in the matter,

  440. that we are damned

  441. to a life of sin and death

  442. because of what happened

  443. with Adam,

  444. so much so that

  445. his sin was really

  446. our sin,

  447. then the question is,

  448. can you do better?

  449. Is there another way?

  450. You see,

  451. headship or representation,

  452. as frustrating as it may be,

  453. is actually good news.

  454. Okay?

  455. It's good news.

  456. Why is it good news?

  457. Because God has called Adam

  458. a type of the one to come.

  459. Again,

  460. look with me at verses 14.

  461. We'll look at all of verse 14

  462. and then I'll emphasize

  463. the last part

  464. that I want to draw

  465. your attention to.

  466. Yet death reigned

  467. from Adam to Moses

  468. even over those

  469. whose sinning

  470. was not like the transgression

  471. of Adam,

  472. who was a type

  473. of the one

  474. who was to come.

  475. So the hope is

  476. that even though Adam

  477. was the best of us

  478. and he fell,

  479. that the type

  480. that he is

  481. hopefully is going to point

  482. to a perfect version,

  483. a better version.

  484. And Adam 2.0,

  485. where all the bugs

  486. are worked out.

  487. Okay?

  488. Someone who is perfect

  489. and without blemish,

  490. who does not have

  491. the ability to sin.

  492. Okay?

  493. He's not riddled

  494. with selfishness

  495. and pride.

  496. Paul gives a clue here.

  497. And then this brings us

  498. to our second point.

  499. Verses 15 to 17.

  500. And we're going to look

  501. at Christ and grace.

  502. So how then

  503. are Adam now,

  504. Paul's going to move on

  505. to compare and contrast

  506. Adam and Jesus,

  507. looking at how they're contrasted,

  508. how they are dissimilar.

  509. Adam's a type

  510. of the one to come,

  511. but in so much

  512. as he is just

  513. our representative head.

  514. Okay?

  515. So Christ also

  516. is a representative

  517. of head.

  518. And Paul is going to say

  519. in this next section,

  520. that's where

  521. the similarities end.

  522. Almost certainly

  523. where the similarities end.

  524. Look with me

  525. at verses 15.

  526. And I'll just say

  527. this really quickly.

  528. How are Adam

  529. and Jesus dissimilar?

  530. There are many ways.

  531. I think

  532. the Apostle Paul

  533. will spell out

  534. at least three,

  535. but we'll look

  536. at two of them.

  537. The first

  538. is that

  539. they're dissimilar

  540. in the nature

  541. of their actions.

  542. Look with me

  543. at verses 15.

  544. Yeah,

  545. just verse 15.

  546. But the free gift

  547. is not like

  548. the trespass.

  549. For if many died

  550. through one man's trespass,

  551. talking about Adam

  552. in the garden,

  553. much more

  554. have the grace

  555. of God

  556. and the free gift

  557. by the grace

  558. of that one man,

  559. Jesus Christ,

  560. abounded for many.

  561. So,

  562. we've talked about it.

  563. The trespass

  564. of Adam

  565. that Paul is referring to

  566. is the rebellion

  567. and idolatry

  568. that happens

  569. in the garden.

  570. Adam,

  571. he elevates himself.

  572. Alright?

  573. He does not want

  574. to worship God.

  575. He wants to be worshipped.

  576. His will

  577. is what matters,

  578. not God's will.

  579. So,

  580. Adam,

  581. as our representative head,

  582. did what we would have done.

  583. Therefore,

  584. as we have seen

  585. in that previous section,

  586. death reigns in us

  587. as it did Adam.

  588. Compare that to Christ.

  589. Christ doesn't

  590. self-promote himself,

  591. does he?

  592. Upon the cross,

  593. what does Jesus do?

  594. He sacrifices himself.

  595. It is the perfect example

  596. of humility.

  597. And now,

  598. this one act

  599. of righteousness

  600. that Jesus does

  601. on the cross,

  602. it becomes

  603. our righteousness.

  604. Interestingly,

  605. why?

  606. Because now,

  607. Christ is our head.

  608. And that is where

  609. the connection

  610. between Adam

  611. and Christ

  612. begin

  613. and almost certainly end.

  614. Just as Adam

  615. was our representative head,

  616. now Christ

  617. is our representative head.

  618. And because sin

  619. came to us

  620. because of our connection

  621. with Adam,

  622. now righteousness

  623. comes to us

  624. because of our connection

  625. with Christ.

  626. Christ is now

  627. our representative head.

  628. He is not like

  629. the old Adam

  630. who,

  631. through the act

  632. of disobedience,

  633. brought death.

  634. Instead,

  635. through his act

  636. of self-sacrificial giving,

  637. it says that

  638. we are given life.

  639. The nature of the first Adam

  640. is to bring death.

  641. The nature of the second Adam,

  642. the Adam 2.0,

  643. if you will,

  644. is to give life.

  645. One self-exalts,

  646. the other lays down his life.

  647. One is prideful,

  648. one is humble.

  649. We have two separate,

  650. separate,

  651. very different kinds

  652. of Adams.

  653. The second difference

  654. is the immediate result

  655. and then the ultimate effects

  656. of their actions.

  657. Look with me

  658. at verses 16 and 17.

  659. By the way,

  660. if you're a bit of a,

  661. a grammar nerd

  662. or you enjoy getting deep,

  663. going deep dives

  664. into scripture,

  665. you'll notice in verses 15

  666. and then also in verses 16 and 17,

  667. Paul uses a not like

  668. much more language

  669. to compare and contrast

  670. Jesus and Adam.

  671. And he does it here

  672. for the second difference.

  673. This is what he says,

  674. verse 16.

  675. And the free gift is

  676. not like the result

  677. of that one man's sin.

  678. For the judgment following

  679. one trespass

  680. brought condemnation

  681. but the free gift

  682. follows many trespasses.

  683. Following many trespasses

  684. brought justification.

  685. Verse 17,

  686. for if because of

  687. one man's trespass

  688. death reigned

  689. through that one man,

  690. bit of a separation here,

  691. much more

  692. will those who receive

  693. the abundance of grace

  694. and the free gift

  695. of righteousness

  696. reign in life

  697. through the one man,

  698. Jesus Christ.

  699. Guys,

  700. that is a thick sentence.

  701. It's a tough one

  702. to get our minds around.

  703. But here's an attempt.

  704. Adam's sin brought

  705. death and condemnation.

  706. That was the immediate

  707. results of his sin.

  708. Adam sins in the garden.

  709. He is rightly judged

  710. and condemned

  711. and he is banished

  712. from the presence of God.

  713. That's what happens

  714. in the garden.

  715. Adam and Eve,

  716. they were barred

  717. from entering the garden,

  718. to re-enter the garden.

  719. Because they were

  720. disconnected

  721. from the source of life,

  722. they became cut roses.

  723. They were beautiful.

  724. Mankind is beautiful,

  725. capable of much,

  726. but disconnected

  727. from the source of life.

  728. We bloom once,

  729. we do not bloom again.

  730. But what of Christ?

  731. On the cross,

  732. Christ Jesus,

  733. he justifies us.

  734. We have spent

  735. a fair amount of time

  736. examining this

  737. in Romans thus far.

  738. But in essence,

  739. it means that before God,

  740. we are made right.

  741. And given the very standing

  742. and stature of Christ himself,

  743. even more than that,

  744. the ultimate effects

  745. of Christ's death

  746. on the cross

  747. is that death

  748. no longer reigns,

  749. but life does.

  750. It's like we are reconnected

  751. to the source of life

  752. in some miraculous way,

  753. grafted into a living tree,

  754. or if we're going to use

  755. the rose analogy,

  756. a living bush.

  757. Even more than that,

  758. the ultimate effect

  759. is that,

  760. is not just that

  761. life reigns over death,

  762. but it says actually

  763. that we will reign

  764. in life through Christ.

  765. This is where

  766. it's unbelievably dense,

  767. where Paul's getting into

  768. an absolute

  769. theological treatise here.

  770. Really what Paul is saying here

  771. is that because,

  772. again,

  773. thinking of headship,

  774. thinking about

  775. Christ being our

  776. representative head,

  777. what happens to Christ

  778. as our head

  779. is what happens with us,

  780. and what happens with Christ.

  781. He rises from the grave,

  782. he ascends into heaven,

  783. and is seated

  784. at the right hand

  785. of God himself

  786. to rule and reign

  787. over this world.

  788. Paul is saying

  789. that we get to participate

  790. in that

  791. in some kind of way.

  792. We are not Christ,

  793. we will never be Christ,

  794. but we are so connected

  795. with him.

  796. He is our head,

  797. we are the body,

  798. he represents us,

  799. he is Adam 2.0,

  800. and Paul is saying

  801. in this text

  802. that we will reign in life.

  803. What that looks like,

  804. how that will ultimately unfurl,

  805. it's hard to understand

  806. and comprehend

  807. in its fullness,

  808. but what it ultimately says

  809. is that death

  810. no longer has a final word.

  811. Life will always triumph,

  812. death,

  813. death,

  814. and that the grave

  815. is truly robbed

  816. of its power,

  817. truly robbed

  818. of its power.

  819. Our destiny

  820. is the same as Christ's,

  821. to be in the presence

  822. of God forever.

  823. You notice how

  824. we're starting to see

  825. how Jesus is

  826. the better Adam?

  827. Adam being completely removed

  828. from the presence of God,

  829. never to be allowed back in,

  830. and what does Christ do?

  831. He is in the presence of God,

  832. he is God himself,

  833. and he brings us with him.

  834. He is our representative head,

  835. so where he goes,

  836. we go also.

  837. One additional point

  838. before we get to

  839. our third

  840. and final point,

  841. and this is key,

  842. both for being under

  843. this new representative head

  844. and for the gospel itself.

  845. Notice in verses 15 to 17

  846. how many times

  847. Paul uses the term

  848. free gift,

  849. okay?

  850. I'll just read a bit,

  851. but the free gift

  852. is not like

  853. the trespass.

  854. The free gift

  855. by the grace

  856. of that one

  857. Jesus Christ,

  858. the free gift

  859. is not like the result

  860. of that one man's sin.

  861. The free gift

  862. following many trespasses

  863. and so on and so forth.

  864. Five times in three verses

  865. he uses the term

  866. free gift.

  867. And then three more times

  868. he speaks of the grace

  869. of God.

  870. So why the emphasis

  871. on gift and grace?

  872. And then why even mention

  873. that the gift is free?

  874. Is that not a kind of redundancy?

  875. I mean,

  876. it's a,

  877. people do this,

  878. I'm sure I've done this.

  879. If you give a gift with,

  880. we can give gifts

  881. with strings attached.

  882. They're not really

  883. great gifts,

  884. if that's the case.

  885. It takes the joy out of it.

  886. But in its essence,

  887. a gift is free,

  888. right?

  889. You're giving somebody

  890. something that they

  891. didn't pay for

  892. because you want to,

  893. because it's a joy

  894. to do so.

  895. So it seems a bit

  896. redundant for Paul

  897. to say the free gift.

  898. Why is he emphasizing

  899. grace and gift

  900. in this way?

  901. I think it goes back

  902. to the ultimate effect

  903. of Christ,

  904. namely,

  905. that we will reign

  906. with him.

  907. You see,

  908. if we were to have

  909. access,

  910. sorry,

  911. if we were to have

  912. success and victory

  913. in anything,

  914. as again,

  915. broken,

  916. sinful human beings,

  917. we want to take credit

  918. for it,

  919. whether in small victories

  920. or even in eternal life.

  921. I wonder if this is

  922. especially the case

  923. for some of us

  924. here this morning.

  925. You've studied,

  926. you've saved,

  927. you've made right decisions,

  928. you have taken risks,

  929. but they're calculated risks.

  930. You've exercised,

  931. you've eaten well,

  932. you've raised children

  933. with good values,

  934. or you've been

  935. a fantastic volunteer,

  936. you've done all the things

  937. right,

  938. and these are all

  939. wonderful things,

  940. but if any of these things

  941. are done in such a way

  942. as to garner

  943. eternal life,

  944. or garner salvation,

  945. or garner reputational

  946. bliss,

  947. so to speak,

  948. then what we are doing

  949. ultimately is trying

  950. to buy something

  951. that is not for sale

  952. that God only gives

  953. as a gift.

  954. And we take something

  955. that is good

  956. and wonderful

  957. that is salvation,

  958. and we say,

  959. I want a part to play

  960. in earning this.

  961. I do not like the idea

  962. of being gifted something

  963. without taking some kind

  964. of credit for it,

  965. but when we do that,

  966. it becomes utterly useless,

  967. because the gift

  968. no longer is a gift.

  969. We are trying to earn

  970. our salvation

  971. by our own works,

  972. but friends,

  973. you need the grace of God,

  974. and that grace of God

  975. is a free gift,

  976. and Paul is saying,

  977. listen,

  978. if you make it

  979. into anything else,

  980. it loses all its power,

  981. and it can be

  982. a very difficult thing

  983. for us to accept,

  984. especially if we are

  985. of the variety

  986. of people

  987. that like to be

  988. somewhat self-made,

  989. like to work hard

  990. and do good.

  991. It's a very hard thing

  992. to just receive something

  993. that is so unbelievably great,

  994. but as hard as that

  995. may be to accept,

  996. this is really

  997. the only thing

  998. that brings full

  999. and lasting freedom.

  1000. For our eternal life

  1001. is not contingent

  1002. on our best efforts,

  1003. but on Christ's

  1004. everlasting gift.

  1005. Christ is truly

  1006. the greater Adam,

  1007. and this leads us

  1008. into our third

  1009. and final point,

  1010. starting in verse 18,

  1011. and I'll read

1012. to the end of the chapter.

  1013. Therefore,

  1014. as one trespass

  1015. led to condemnation

  1016. for all men,

  1017. so one act

  1018. of righteousness

  1019. leads to justification

1020. in life for all men.

  1021. For as by the

  1022. one man,

  1023. that again,

  1024. Adam,

  1025. for as by the

  1026. one man's disobedience

1027. the many were made sinners,

1028. so by the one man's

  1029. obedience the many

  1030. will be made righteous.

1031. Now the law came in

  1032. to increase the trespass,

1033. but where sin is increased,

  1034. grace abounded

  1035. all the more,

  1036. so that as sin

  1037. reigned in death,

  1038. grace also might reign

  1039. through righteousness

  1040. leading to eternal life

  1041. through Jesus Christ

  1042. our Lord.

  1043. Paul returns

  1044. to his

  1045. half-completed sentence

  1046. in verse 12.

  1047. He completes

  1048. the comparison

  1049. between Adam

  1050. and Christ,

  1051. and we can see

  1052. this in how

  1053. Paul structures

  1054. this paragraph

  1055. with as so.

  1056. That's how he's going

1057. to compare and contrast it,

  1058. as so.

  1059. Verses 12,

  1060. 18,

  1061. 19,

  1062. and 21.

  1063. And in doing so,

  1064. he's going to highlight

  1065. the supremacy of Christ

1066. and what he has done

  1067. over and above Adam.

1068. How great is the grace

  1069. of God?

  1070. Paul asks,

1071. so great that the one

  1072. act of righteousness

  1073. by Christ

  1074. renders the power

  1075. and consequences

  1076. of sin and death

  1077. powerless.

  1078. One act

  1079. and sin

  1080. is completely

  1081. emptied of power.

  1082. Christ,

  1083. upon the cross,

  1084. does the most

  1085. righteous thing

  1086. and it says

  1087. that he redeems

  1088. the world.

  1089. But here's an interesting

  1090. thing,

1091. because if you go back

  1092. to the second half

  1093. of verse 18,

1094. I'll read the full thing.

1095. This is what it says,

  1096. therefore,

  1097. as one trespass

  1098. led to condemnation

  1099. for all men,

  1100. so one act

  1101. of righteousness

  1102. leads to justification

1103. in life for all men.

  1104. The question,

  1105. I think,

  1106. is an important question

  1107. to ask.

  1108. Is Paul saying

  1109. that on the cross,

  1110. Jesus saves all people?

  1111. Is there a universalism

  1112. where regardless

  1113. of how

  1114. we respond

  1115. to Christ,

  1116. because we are

  1117. represented

  1118. by him,

  1119. okay,

  1120. are we then

  1121. saved by him?

  1122. Is Paul saying

  1123. that all

  1124. really means all

  1125. in verse 18?

  1126. Listen,

  1127. if we haven't

  1128. gotten in the weeds

  1129. enough in this

  1130. chapter,

  1131. we're going to go

  1132. a bit deeper in.

  1133. Listen,

  1134. this next section,

  1135. I've got to ask

1136. for a bit of grace.

  1137. I understand

  1138. enough

1139. to be a bit dangerous.

  1140. But what I don't

  1141. understand

  1142. can be

  1143. a bit dangerous

  1144. as well.

  1145. When it comes

  1146. to the biblical

  1147. understanding

  1148. of salvation,

  1149. some theologians

  1150. and very excellent

  1151. ones subscribe

  1152. to an idea

  1153. of double

  1154. predestination.

  1155. The idea

  1156. that God

  1157. predestines

  1158. some

  1159. to election

  1160. and salvation,

  1161. but then

  1162. elects some

  1163. for hell

  1164. and damnation.

  1165. salvation.

  1166. And as a result,

  1167. Christ's sacrifice

  1168. on the cross

  1169. is only for the

  1170. elect and not

  1171. for the world.

  1172. However,

  1173. a passage

  1174. like this,

  1175. what we have

  1176. in chapter 15,

  1177. 18,

  1178. and on to the

  1179. end of the chapter,

  1180. a passage like

  1181. this makes

  1182. an audacious

  1183. claim

  1184. that God

  1185. in the one

  1186. act of

  1187. Christ's

  1188. sacrificial

  1189. death on the

  1190. cross

  1191. truly died

  1192. to atone

  1193. for all the

  1194. sins

  1195. for all

  1196. time.

  1197. Therefore,

  1198. Christ's death

  1199. is universal

  1200. in its

  1201. sufficiency

  1202. and scope.

  1203. Universal

  1204. in its

  1205. sufficiency

  1206. and scope.

  1207. Okay?

  1208. When we

  1209. consider how

  1210. the one

  1211. act of

  1212. Adam's

  1213. rebellion

  1214. has permeated

  1215. all of

  1216. humanity,

  1217. okay,

  1218. Adam's

  1219. rebellion

  1220. is also,

  1221. in a sense,

  1222. universal in

  1223. scope,

  1224. it stands

  1225. to reason

  1226. that the

  1227. one act

  1228. of Christ,

  1229. the second

  1230. Adam,

  1231. should likewise

  1232. carry this

  1233. universality

  1234. for all

  1235. people.

  1236. The redemption

  1237. must fit

  1238. the sin.

  1239. And I

  1240. think I

  1241. would be a

  1242. heretic if I

  1243. paused there,

  1244. if I ended

  1245. there.

  1246. Because we

  1247. need to be

  1248. careful with

  1249. reading what

  1250. Paul says and

  1251. what he

  1252. doesn't say.

  1253. I think

  1254. Paul,

  1255. in his

  1256. excitement,

  1257. and I

  1258. don't say

  1259. that to

  1260. dismiss him

  1261. at all,

  1262. but his

  1263. excitement in

  1264. understanding

  1265. how grand

  1266. and fantastic

  1267. the salvation

  1268. of Christ

  1269. truly was

  1270. upon the

  1271. cross,

  1272. he gets

  1273. as close

  1274. to the

  1275. line of

  1276. universalism

  1277. as possible.

  1278. Okay,

  1279. but he

  1280. doesn't cross

  1281. it.

  1282. We need

  1283. to be

  1284. careful to

  1285. not put

  1286. words in

  1287. Paul's

  1288. mouth or

  1289. defend a

  1290. belief that

  1291. the church

  1292. has never

  1293. held in

  1294. finding a

  1295. random proof

  1296. text to

  1297. fit it.

  1298. In some

  1299. ways it would

  1300. be wonderful

  1301. if universalism

  1302. was true.

  1303. Okay,

  1304. I have

  1305. family members

  1306. that have

  1307. died without

  1308. knowing Christ.

  1309. Right?

  1310. I would

  1311. love for

  1312. them to

  1313. be in

  1314. heaven with

  1315. me.

  1316. Okay,

  1317. if,

  1318. say it

  1319. this way,

  1320. if universalism,

  1321. if you

  1322. scoff at

  1323. it,

  1324. and there's

  1325. not an

  1326. ounce of

  1327. you that

  1328. wishes it

  1329. could be

  1330. true in

  1331. some way,

  1332. shape,

  1333. or form,

  1334. your heart

  1335. might be a

  1336. bit cold.

  1337. It might

  1338. be.

  1339. I'm not

  1340. saying it

  1341. is,

  1342. but it

  1343. might be.

  1344. Nevertheless,

  1345. it's not

  1346. something that

  1347. the Bible

  1348. will teach.

  1349. Again,

  1350. we need to

  1351. be careful

  1352. here,

  1353. because Paul

  1354. isn't saying

  1355. that this

  1356. universally

  1357. sufficient

  1358. atonement

  1359. is universally

  1360. applied.

  1361. Okay?

  1362. Instead,

  1363. we see that

  1364. although I

  1365. would argue

  1366. that it is

  1367. universally

  1368. sufficient what

  1369. Christ does

  1370. on the cross,

  1371. so that if

  1372. hypothetically

  1373. every single

  1374. person put

  1375. their faith in

  1376. Christ,

  1377. they would

  1378. truly be

  1379. saved,

  1380. it is

  1381. particular in

  1382. its application.

  1383. And how do

  1384. we know this?

  1385. Well,

  1386. let's go back

  1387. one verse

  1388. in verse 17.

  1389. This is what

  1390. it says.

  1391. For if

  1392. because of

  1393. one man's

  1394. trespass,

  1395. death

  1396. reigns

  1397. through that

  1398. one man,

  1399. much more

  1400. will those,

  1401. here's the

  1402. key bit,

  1403. who receive

  1404. the abundance

  1405. of grace

  1406. and the free

  1407. gift of

  1408. righteousness

  1409. reign in

  1410. life through

  1411. the one man,

  1412. Jesus Christ.

  1413. You see,

  1414. Jesus' death

  1415. on the cross

  1416. was so

  1417. very great,

  1418. okay,

  1419. dying for

  1420. the sins

  1421. of the

  1422. world.

  1423. God so

  1424. loved the

  1425. world that

  1426. he gave

  1427. his only

  1428. begotten

  1429. son.

  1430. But it's

  1431. still a

  1432. gift that

  1433. must be

  1434. received.

  1435. And how

  1436. do we

  1437. receive it?

  1438. By faith.

  1439. Now,

  1440. why do

  1441. some people

  1442. receive it

  1443. gladly and

  1444. some don't?

  1445. I think

  1446. there truly

  1447. is a

  1448. doctrine of

  1449. election.

  1450. we're not

  1451. going to

  1452. talk about

  1453. it.

  1454. And to

  1455. be perfectly

  1456. honest,

  1457. there is

  1458. a high

  1459. degree of

  1460. mystery that

  1461. who knows

  1462. the mind

  1463. of God?

  1464. Why?

  1465. Some go

  1466. to heaven

  1467. and some

  1468. don't.

  1469. Okay?

  1470. But nevertheless,

  1471. there is this

  1472. call to

  1473. receive what

  1474. Christ has

  1475. given.

  1476. To receive

  1477. it.

  1478. To not

  1479. stand on

  1480. our own

  1481. merit.

  1482. To not

  1483. stand on

  1484. our own

  1485. self.

  1486. promotion,

  1487. but to

  1488. humble

  1489. ourselves

  1490. and say,

  1491. I can't

  1492. get salvation.

  1493. I can't

  1494. beat sin.

  1495. I can't

  1496. conquer

  1497. death.

  1498. But you

  1499. have.

  1500. So I'm

  1501. trusting you.

  1502. You are

  1503. my new

  1504. head.

  1505. You are

  1506. Adam 2.0.

  1507. You're

  1508. the one

  1509. that I'm

  1510. going to

  1511. trust.

  1512. I'm

  1513. going to

  1514. receive

  1515. this

  1516. gift.

  1517. God

  1518. truly

  1519. in

  1520. Christ

  1521. has

  1522. proven

  1523. to

  1524. the

  1525. world

  1526. that

  1527. he

  1528. doesn't

  1529. want

  1530. to

  1531. see

  1532. people

  1533. die.

  1534. And he

  1535. doesn't

  1536. want to

  1537. see

  1538. death

  1539. persist.

  1540. Christ

  1541. truly is

  1542. the

  1543. greater

  1544. Adam.

  1545. Just as

  1546. through

  1547. Adam,

  1548. the first

  1549. representative

  1550. head of

  1551. mankind,

  1552. sin became

  1553. universal,

  1554. so too

  1555. did

  1556. righteousness

  1557. come into

  1558. the world

  1559. by the

  1560. second and

  1561. greater

  1562. Adam.

  1563. friends,

  1564. let us

  1565. think about

  1566. this and

  1567. dwell upon

  1568. it and

  1569. receive it.

  1570. This free

  1571. gift given

  1572. to us.

  1573. Nothing is

  1574. needed to

  1575. be added

  1576. to it.

  1577. It doesn't

  1578. need a

  1579. fix of

  1580. some kind

  1581. of way.

  1582. There are

  1583. no bugs

  1584. that need

  1585. to be

  1586. worked out.

  1587. It is

  1588. perfect and

  1589. it is

  1590. yours.

  1591. Will you

  1592. receive

  1593. it?

  1594. You

  1595. see the

  1596. grace of

  1597. God

  1598. given to

  1599. us in

  1600. the

  1601. obedient,

  1602. justifying,

  1603. righteous death

  1604. of Christ

  1605. is far

  1606. greater than

  1607. the effects

  1608. of sin.

  1609. In fact,

  1610. Paul says

  1611. that grace

  1612. abounded all

  1613. the more.

  1614. Where sin

  1615. is, grace

  1616. abounds all

  1617. the more.

  1618. Literally,

  1619. grace super

  1620. or hyper

  1621. abounded,

  1622. which is to

  1623. say that the

  1624. gift of

  1625. eternal life,

  1626. it towers

  1627. over death.

  1628. Death is

  1629. strong and

  1630. if you've

  1631. tasted death

  1632. in any kind

  1633. of way,

  1634. you will know

  1635. that that is

  1636. quite the feat.

  1637. It is like

  1638. an ant

  1639. standing

  1640. walking,

  1641. whatever ants

  1642. do,

  1643. do they

  1644. stand existing

  1645. next to the

  1646. sea and

  1647. tower,

  1648. only infinitely

  1649. greater.

  1650. Life

  1651. towers over

  1652. death.

  1653. Wherever there

  1654. is sin,

  1655. there is

  1656. abundantly

  1657. more grace.

  1658. There is

  1659. abundantly

  1660. more life.

  1661. So grace

  1662. is superior

  1663. to sin,

  1664. life to

  1665. death,

  1666. the free

  1667. gift to

  1668. sin earned,

  1669. Christ's

  1670. solution to

  1671. Adam's

  1672. problem,

  1673. Christ

  1674. himself over

  1675. Adam.

  1676. He is,

  1677. if you

  1678. receive his

  1679. gift this

  1680. morning,

  1681. if you

  1682. receive his

  1683. gift this

  1684. morning,

  1685. he is your

  1686. new representative

  1687. head.

  1688. And where he

  1689. goes, you

  1690. will go also.

  1691. And friends,

  1692. he is at the

  1693. highest height.

  1694. Will you go

  1695. there with him?
