  1. Our reading this morning comes from Romans 6, verses 15 to 23.

    Romans 6:15–23

  2. What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law, but under grace? By no means.

  3. ! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient as slaves,

  4. you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death,

  5. or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

  6. But thanks be to God that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart

  7. to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,

  8. and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

  9. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations.

  10. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness,

  11. leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness,

  12. leading to sanctification.

  13. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

  14. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed?

  15. For the end of those things is death.

  16. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God,

  17. the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end eternal life.

  18. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  19. So, here in Ottawa, 2026, we are very far removed from slavery.

  20. In fact, Canada, for all of our troubling historical faux pas,

  21. we are far from a perfect country, not sure if you knew that or not.

  22. We had actually a fantastic track record when it comes to slavery.

  23. Pre-Confederation Canada was very ahead of its time.

  24. Slavery was alive and well, raging in America and the rest of the New World.

  25. The slave trade was active.

  26. And yet, here in Ontario, or at the time Upper Canada,

  27. John Simcoe, the one who founded York, which would later become Toronto,

  28. he was instrumental in outlawing slavery.

  29. He was an early English abolitionist, and he was also the Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada, Ontario,

  30. what is now Ontario.

  31. And he signed into law the 1793 Act Against Slavery.

  32. And this was some 40 years before slavery was abolished in Westminster.

  33. It's actually quite remarkable.

  34. Canada also had a very fantastic role that they played in the Underground Railroad.

  35. We should keep our heads held high when it comes to the history of Canada

  36. and the transatlantic slave trade.

  37. So, it's troubling then, if we come to this text as Canadians that know our history

  38. and are proud of it, which we should be,

  39. at least in this area of our history,

  40. we come to a troubling passage where the Apostle Paul is going to liken the Christian life to slavery.

  41. He's going to liken the Christian life to slavery.

  42. And he's going to use it to shed light on the doctrine of grace,

  43. which is very foundational to what it means to be a Christian.

  44. He is a provocative preacher.

  45. He was then, and he continues to be now the Apostle Paul.

  46. But, as we go through chapters of the Bible,

  47. we don't just pick what Daniel wants to pick on a Sunday morning,

  48. because it's easier that way for me.

  49. We go through books of the Bible,

  50. so we come to a potentially difficult text.

  51. We don't walk away from it, we're going to walk towards it this morning.

  52. And we're going to try to grasp what the Apostle Paul is saying,

  53. and we're going to look at two contrasting pairings that he uses

  54. to help articulate what it means to live as Christians.

  55. He's going to contrast slavery and freedom, first and foremost.

  56. And then, secondly, he's going to contrast sanctification and sin.

  57. Very theological, Christian-y words.

  58. Slavery and freedom, sanctification and sin.

  59. So, just two points this morning.

  60. We're going to jump in the text shortly in verse 16.

  61. But first, I think it would help us to take a moment to understand a little bit about slavery.

  62. Because we are, maybe not everybody,

  63. but I would venture to guess the majority of us are understanding slavery through chattel slavery,

  64. the transatlantic slave trade,

  65. the whole abhorrent act of stealing people

  66. and buying and selling them that the new world in many ways was built upon.

  67. But Paul is speaking to a similar but different kind of slavery

  68. that took place in the first century in Rome.

  69. You see, in the ancient world, in the ancient Roman Empire,

  70. it would be unthinkable to live without slaves.

  71. It was so baked into the economy of ancient Rome.

  72. Slaves made up anywhere from 15 to up to 30% of all of the population of the Roman Empire.

  73. In fact, there's some estimates that slaves and former slaves

  74. were actually the majority of the population by the first century.

  75. Slavery, let's be clear, a terrible business.

  76. If you worked in the fields, if you worked in the mines,

  77. you would wish death upon yourself.

  78. But being a household slave could afford somebody a better life.

  79. If you were lower class, a lower class freed person,

  80. you might approach somebody to become a slave.

  81. I mean, you would totally be owned by somebody else,

  82. but you'd have food, you'd have shelter,

  83. you'd have a purpose, you'd have a job.

  84. And in some cases, people could be doctors,

  85. they could be managers, they could be tutors,

  86. they could even own their own slaves as slaves.

  87. Nevertheless, slavery is still not advantageous.

  88. You're still owned by another human being.

  89. It's not great.

  90. You are property, not a human being.

  91. And especially in the church,

  92. slavery would have been very, very obvious.

  93. The church in the early first century was full of slaves,

  94. primarily because the gospel proclaims inequality.

  95. The Apostle Paul will later on,

  96. in a number of different places throughout the New Testament,

  97. will talk about,

  98. in Christ Jesus,

  99. there's neither slave or free,

  100. male or female,

  101. Jew or Greek,

  102. and you'll continue on.

  103. Not that our identities become dissolved,

  104. but just that there's inequality before God.

  105. Why?

  106. Because we are made in God's image.

  107. This is like a foundational aspect of Christianity.

  108. So therefore, the church would be a very welcoming place for slaves.

  109. Therefore, Paul is speaking the vernacular to this group of people.

  110. He is speaking their language.

  111. He is using a metaphor that they would understand.

  112. And by the way,

  113. it's not exactly like Paul is jazzed about this metaphor.

  114. Look with me in verse 19.

  115. It'll be on page 30 if you're using one of these scripture journals.

  116. Paul says this,

  117. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations.

  118. Listen, this is not the best metaphor to use.

  119. Likening Christianity to slavery isn't exactly the best way to promote your faith.

  120. Even for the most kind of upper class slaves, so to speak,

  121. you're still property.

  122. It's not the greatest situation.

  123. Nevertheless, it's an apt metaphor

  124. because the majority of the people would,

  125. potentially the majority of the people would be slaves,

  126. but everybody would understand what slavery was in the first century.

  127. So, with that as a bit of a primer, so to speak,

  128. on what the Apostle Paul is talking about,

  129. let's read verses 16 to 19.

  130. Nisa has read it already, but we'll read it again.

  131. Starting in verse 16.

  132. Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,

  133. you are slaves of the one whom you obey,

  134. either of sin, which leads to death,

  135. or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

  136. But thanks be to God that you who were once slaves of sin

  137. have become obedient from the heart

  138. to the standard of teaching to which you were committed.

  139. And having been set free from sin,

  140. have become slaves of righteousness.

  141. Again, we reference this.

  142. I'm speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations.

  143. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity

  144. and to lawlessness, leading to more lawlessness,

  145. so now present your members as slaves to righteousness,

  146. leading to sanctification.

  147. There's a lot there.

  148. I'm going to point out two important things

  149. that I want to draw your attention to.

  150. The first is this.

  151. Paul assumes that all human beings are slaves.

  152. And not just that all human beings in the first century are slaves,

  153. that all human beings in every place and every time are slaves.

  154. In fact, this room, the Apostle Paul would say,

  155. is full of slaves.

  156. And he is making this case because

  157. we've seen in chapter 5,

  158. if you were here a couple weeks ago,

  159. that all human beings are connected in a very deep way to Adam.

  160. Adam, the character in the first two,

  161. the first three chapters of Genesis,

  162. where sin entered the world through Adam.

  163. That because of that,

  164. we all became slaves,

  165. and slaves from our birth.

  166. No one is truly free

  167. in the sense of being completely and fully autonomous.

  168. Everybody serves something.

  169. Either we will serve death and sin,

  170. oftentimes it takes the form of us serving our appetites,

  171. our affections,

  172. our desire to be respected

  173. and loved,

  174. our pleasure,

  175. our money,

  176. our exhilaration,

  177. our desire for exhilaration.

  178. We have a young man in our house

  179. that I think that will be his besetting desire,

  180. the thing that he pursues his whole life.

  181. Comfort, status,

  182. you name it.

  183. We serve something.

  184. We will go after something.

  185. We are not fully autonomous.

  186. We are governed

  187. by the things we are pursuing.

  188. The scripture repeatedly calls this pursuit

  189. that is separated,

  190. unhinged,

  191. uncoupled from God,

  192. he calls it sin.

  193. The scriptures call it sin.

  194. The apostle Paul calls it sin.

  195. We're good things,

  196. very good things.

  197. Pleasure is a good thing.

  198. Exhilaration can be a very good thing.

  199. Money,

  200. a wonderful tool.

  201. But when they become ultimate things,

  202. they are disordered

  203. and abused

  204. and tainted.

  205. Gifts are elevated above

  206. the one who gives the gifts.

  207. It's a huge problem.

  208. And the apostle Paul

  209. says that we are slaves.

  210. We serve such things.

  211. Verses 18 and 19,

  212. he will say that

  213. such slavery

  214. is actually a slavery

  215. to impurity

  216. and lawlessness.

  217. But when we are saved by God,

  218. when he extends to us

  219. this incredible gift of grace,

  220. salvation,

  221. and we receive it by faith in Christ,

  222. the apostle Paul says that we actually have a new master.

  223. So it's not that we cease to serve

  224. or cease to be a slave of something.

  225. We are rather serving someone else.

  226. We are a slave of someone else.

  227. We have a new master.

  228. This master is God.

  229. That is the first important consideration for us

  230. that I want to draw your attention to

  231. from this verses 16 to 19.

  232. The second part

  233. is that Paul states emphatically

  234. that we cannot have two masters.

  235. So on one hand,

  236. we cannot not have a master.

  237. On the other hand,

  238. we can only have one.

  239. We see this in verses 16 and 19.

  240. We can either serve sin

  241. or we can serve God.

  242. We can either serve things that lead to death

  243. or things that lead to life.

  244. Jesus, likewise,

  245. teaches the same thing

  246. in his Sermon on the Mount,

  247. Matthew 5 to 7.

  248. In it,

  249. he makes clear that we can

  250. only serve one master.

  251. Why?

  252. Because we will only love one.

  253. And it will be at the expense of the other.

  254. We'll hate the other one.

  255. And in that case,

  256. he's speaking on money.

  257. He ends that section of teaching

  258. by saying,

  259. you cannot serve both God and mammon.

  260. You cannot serve both God and money.

  261. Very apt for us

  262. here in our affluent day.

  263. There is

  264. a very clear point that Paul is making.

  265. There's only two camps

  266. and you can only be in one of them.

  267. So this life of faith

  268. that Paul is then putting forward.

  269. It's not a life

  270. that we get to just enjoy

  271. whatever we want,

  272. but it's actually

  273. a life of surrender.

  274. It's a life of slavery.

  275. And this is, again,

  276. where we have to wrestle

  277. through with what

  278. Paul is saying.

  279. Because he is going to say

  280. that

  281. we have to present

  282. our whole selves.

  283. He talks about members

  284. and in the original language,

  285. it's literally like

  286. your limbs,

  287. but it carries with it

  288. this idea that

  289. it's not just your bodies,

  290. but it is your desires,

  291. it's your mind,

  292. it's your affection,

  293. your affections.

  294. It means we have to present

  295. our whole selves to God

  296. in response to what God

  297. has done for us.

  298. Paul will write

  299. to the Corinthian church

  300. and tell us

  301. what God has done for us.

  302. And what is that?

  303. He says in chapter 6

  304. of 1 Corinthians

  305. that we are not our own,

  306. but that we were bought

  307. with a price.

  308. And that price is

  309. the shed blood

  310. of Christ himself.

  311. So the big question

  312. that Paul wants to remind

  313. and exhort his listeners,

  314. and those listeners

  315. are us here this morning,

  316. what he wants to remind us

  317. of is a question.

  318. And here's the question.

  319. Who are you obedient to?

  320. Not if you are obedient

  321. to something or someone,

  322. but who are you obedient to?

  323. Is it any of the things

  324. I named just a minute

  325. or two ago?

  326. Or is it Christ himself?

  327. A bit of an objection.

  328. And I think it might be

  329. a good one.

  330. Here's the objection.

  331. It's not one of the big reasons

  332. we have the strife

  333. we have in the world

  334. because we have

  335. more religious fanatics,

  336. not less.

  337. I mean,

  338. we have

  339. an ongoing war

  340. in the Middle East

  341. right now

  342. because of

  343. an entire regime

  344. that is

  345. religiously

  346. hell-bent

  347. on the destruction

  348. of the West.

  349. Isn't that the problem?

  350. Religious fanaticism.

  351. Don't we want

  352. more people

  353. to be balanced,

  354. to be regular?

  355. Whatever that regular is,

  356. by the way.

  357. Regular.

  358. Surely we need people

  359. who enjoy,

  360. yeah,

  361. good church service

  362. here and there,

  363. but aren't given over

  364. to a zealousness

  365. that may make them,

  366. you know,

  367. maybe not very respectable.

  368. I want to,

  369. hypothetically,

  370. whoever is

  371. offering that objection,

  372. I would reply to them

  373. with a question.

  374. Are you sure

  375. that the secular person

  376. isn't actually

  377. the truly zealous one,

  378. the zealous fanatic?

  379. What do I mean?

  380. I do enjoy history.

  381. Obviously,

  382. talking about

  383. John Simcoe,

  384. I really love

  385. the history of Canada

  386. and the history

  387. in general.

  388. But the more

  389. I read about history,

  390. the more I'm very happy

  391. to live in the 21st century.

  392. All right?

  393. I like a refrigerator

  394. that I can open

  395. and get preserved food

  396. and enjoy

  397. whenever I want,

  398. probably too often,

  399. but nevertheless,

  400. I enjoy a flush toilet,

  401. I enjoy a combustion engine.

  402. Okay?

  403. I love the modern world

  404. that we live in.

  405. I do.

  406. I do not want to go back

  407. to horse and buggy

  408. no matter how idealistic

  409. it might seem

  410. when we read children's books

  411. or watch movies.

  412. I don't want it.

  413. Okay?

  414. I like my creature comforts.

  415. But one thing

  416. I do not like

  417. in our 21st century,

  418. and it's precisely

  419. because I am so

  420. infected with it,

  421. is

  422. the religion

  423. of our age.

  424. What do I,

  425. what am I referring to?

  426. The one thing

  427. that has marked

  428. the modern world

  429. and especially

  430. the post-modern world,

  431. the moment we live in,

  432. is something called

  433. expressive individualism.

  434. What do I mean?

  435. It's not a term

  436. that I coined.

  437. I'm okay

  438. in my intellect

  439. but not terribly smart.

  440. Carl Truman,

  441. he's a philosopher

  442. and a professor

  443. and a pastor.

  444. He wrote a big book

  445. on just this very thing.

  446. And he defines

  447. expressive individualism

  448. as meaning,

  449. quote,

  450. that each of us

  451. finds our meaning

  452. by giving expression

  453. to our own feelings

  454. and desires.

  455. And he continues on

  456. anything that gets

  457. in the way of that,

  458. it is that

  459. we have,

  460. sorry,

  461. let me try that again.

  462. Anything that gets

  463. in the way of that,

  464. however,

  465. it is that

  466. that we have defined it

  467. is an offense

  468. to our very person.

  469. That which hinders

  470. my outward expression

  471. of my inner feelings,

  472. that which challenges

  473. or attempts

  474. to falsify

  475. my psychological beliefs

  476. about myself

  477. and thus to disturb

  478. my sense of inner well-being

  479. is by definition harmful

  480. and to be rejected.

  481. And that means

  482. that traditional institutions

  483. must be transformed

  484. to conform

  485. to the psychological self,

  486. not vice versa.

  487. what he is essentially

  488. saying is

  489. we get to decide

  490. what makes us us.

  491. What makes us

  492. have true meaning,

  493. the purpose in life.

  494. It is not

  495. an outside reality

  496. that is put upon us,

  497. but it is an inner reality

  498. that we force the world,

  499. individuals or institutions,

  500. to conform to.

  501. Does this not capture

  502. our current cultural moment?

  503. Is this not the prevailing

  504. religious structure

  505. of our time,

  506. the thing people

  507. are most passionate about,

  508. which is oftentimes themselves?

  509. Is it something

  510. that rings true for you?

  511. It rings true for me.

  512. I hate to admit it,

  513. it does.

  514. I'm a very selfish person.

  515. I like things going my way.

  516. And if things get in the way

  517. of the way I have

  518. curated it to be in my mind,

  519. it's frustrating.

  520. My initial reaction isn't,

  521. I should change.

  522. That needs to change.

  523. You see,

  524. the lie of expressive individualism

  525. is that it is the only way

  526. we can truly be free.

  527. That is what it sells us.

  528. But the fact is,

  529. it is a form of slavery.

  530. In fact,

  531. I would put forward to you

  532. that it is the form of slavery.

  533. For it is a slavery of the mind.

  534. Okay?

  535. The mind.

  536. Okay?

  537. We become beholden

  538. to our desires

  539. and our appetites.

  540. We have no power

  541. to truly think about

  542. the well-being of others.

  543. We are totally obsessed

  544. with the self.

  545. Even when we do charity

  546. or show kindness

  547. to a neighbor,

  548. it is done with an air

  549. of self-satisfaction.

  550. We feel good about ourselves.

  551. That's kind of why

  552. we do it in the end.

  553. And by the way,

  554. it is really good

  555. to help people out

  556. even if your motives

  557. aren't great.

  558. Give money,

  559. give food to the food bank.

  560. They do not care

  561. what your motives are.

  562. Okay?

  563. It's still great to do it.

  564. Nevertheless,

  565. if we're talking about

  566. true charity,

  567. true love,

  568. true selflessness,

  569. forgiveness,

  570. even in our self-giving,

  571. we find that

  572. we are self-absorbed.

  573. It's a problem.

  574. We find ourselves

  575. overindulging.

  576. We often treat others

  577. as the means

  578. to our ends.

  579. We also end up

  580. living with a whole

  581. boatload of shame.

  582. And oftentimes

  583. we experience

  584. emotional and relational

  585. and a kind of

  586. spiritual death.

  587. In fact,

  588. the only freedom

  589. that this expressive

  590. individualism offers

  591. is a freedom

  592. from freedom.

  593. A freedom

  594. from righteousness.

  595. Paul says that

  596. in verse 20.

  597. But consider

  598. a life in Christ.

  599. Slavery to Christ

  600. as Paul calls it.

  601. What does it result in?

  602. Verse 16.

  603. Righteousness.

  604. Which is to say

  605. a right way

  606. of living.

  607. Freedom from sin.

  608. Verse 18.

  609. And then ultimately

  610. it leads to

  611. eternal life.

  612. Verse 22.

  613. So we have a paradox

  614. on our hands here.

  615. We have freedom

  616. from God

  617. being very clearly

  618. Paul shows it

  619. that it's very clearly

  620. slavery to sin

  621. and to death.

  622. While slavery

  623. slavery to God

  624. is freedom

  625. from impurity

  626. lawlessness

  627. and sin.

  628. Bit of a paradox here.

  629. So returning

  630. to Paul's opening

  631. question in

  632. verse 15.

  633. Let me read it for us.

  634. What then?

  635. Are we to sin

  636. because we are not

  637. under law

  638. but under grace?

  639. By no means.

  640. Returning to Paul's

  641. opening question.

  642. Since we are free

  643. from the law

  644. and under grace

  645. are we to sin?

  646. we find ourselves

  647. with a question

  648. that is not asked

  649. from a truly free person

  650. but from somebody

  651. seeking license

  652. to do what he

  653. or she knows

  654. is wrong.

  655. And I would say

  656. license to do

  657. something is a whole

  658. lot different

  659. than freedom

  660. to do something.

  661. Such a question

  662. comes from a heart

  663. not set free

  664. from the law

  665. by grace

  666. but one deeply

  667. enslaved to sin.

  668. It also reflects

  669. the presumption

  670. upon the grace

  671. of God

  672. which fails

  673. to understand

  674. the gloriousness

  675. of God's grace

  676. of his kindness

  677. of his undeserved

  678. merit towards us.

  679. The grace of God

  680. indeed makes us free

  681. but here's the

  682. million dollar question

  683. what does it

  684. make us free to do?

  685. How should we live

  686. in light of that freedom?

  687. This leads us

  688. to the second point

  689. sanctification

  690. and sin.

  691. We need to first

  692. recognize that our

  693. origin story

  694. is one of sin.

  695. We talked about that

  696. in our first point.

  697. We

  698. you who were

  699. once slaves

  700. we were

  701. once slaves

  702. it is our origin story.

  703. The slavery

  704. that we

  705. have

  706. is deep

  707. it's in our bones

  708. it goes to the very

  709. core of

  710. who we are.

  711. But again

  712. at conversion

  713. we become something

  714. different.

  715. Verse 17

  716. I'll read this again.

  717. But thanks

  718. be to God

  719. that you

  720. who were once

  721. slaves of sin

  722. have become

  723. obedient from the

  724. heart to the

  725. standard of

  726. teaching to which

  727. you were

  728. committed.

  729. We have

  730. become something

  731. different.

  732. So we are born

  733. a certain way

  734. but then

  735. we have become

  736. something different.

  737. This becoming

  738. is a result of

  739. what does Paul say?

  740. An obedience

  741. from the heart

  742. to the standard

  743. of teaching to which

  744. you were committed.

  745. A lot of

  746. ink spilt

  747. on how to

  748. translate this.

  749. I just go by

  750. the smartest

  751. person I read

  752. and I think

  753. it boils down

  754. to basically

  755. this.

  756. Paul says

  757. you have

  758. received the

  759. gospel.

  760. The proclamation

  761. that Christ

  762. Jesus has died

  763. on your behalf

  764. he has died

  765. in your place

  766. for your sins

  767. you have been

  768. united to him

  769. given new life

  770. in him

  771. you have heard

  772. the gospel

  773. you have believed

  774. it in your heart

  775. and that this

  776. new belief

  777. has led to

  778. a commitment

  779. to an ongoing

  780. belief

  781. and then action.

  782. We now have

  783. a new master

  784. we are under

  785. new management

  786. new management.

  787. You know

  788. management matters

  789. it does

  790. it matters in

  791. our own lives

  792. it matters in

  793. the world

  794. that we inhabit

  795. years and

  796. years and

  797. years ago

  798. when I was

  799. home from

  800. university

  801. basically

  802. worked like

  803. a dog

  804. Thursday

  805. doing landscaping

  806. Thursday would

  807. come and

  808. we play

  809. basketball

  810. in the evening

  811. and then we

  812. go to this

  813. pub called

  814. the Mad Hatter

  815. and it was

  816. awesome

  817. because my

  818. metabolism was

  819. unbelievable

  820. I would eat

  821. big giant

  822. poutine

  823. and have a

  824. Guinness

  825. like a giant

  826. blender of

  827. chemicals in

  828. my belly

  829. and we had

  830. a great time

  831. we had great

  832. friends

  833. everything was

  834. great

  835. and then one

  836. summer I came

  837. back

  838. and the

  839. Hatter

  840. became an

  841. oyster bar

  842. gross

  843. and it

  844. wasn't fun

  845. and everything

  846. was ruined

  847. and within

  848. like two or

  849. three years

  850. it was changed

  851. back to the

  852. Mad Hatter

  853. but the ship

  854. had sailed

  855. management

  856. matters

  857. it does

  858. the scriptures

  859. make it clear

  860. Paul is making

  861. it clear that

  862. we have come

  863. under new

  864. management

  865. we are no

  866. longer enslaved

  867. to our

  868. previous

  869. slave master

  870. which is sin

  871. but now

  872. enslaved to

  873. Christ

  874. we have

  875. been made

  876. holy

  877. in God's

  878. sight

  879. however

  880. the process

  881. of growing

  882. into what

  883. we are

  884. is ongoing

  885. and requires

  886. his empowerment

  887. even though

  888. we are in

  889. Christ

  890. again

  891. no longer

  892. in Adam

  893. you can read

  894. about that

  895. chapter 5

  896. and therefore

  897. we are

  898. free to live

  899. righteously

  900. we often

  901. don't

  902. we struggle

  903. the apostle

  904. Paul will

  905. really dive

  906. into this

  907. in chapter 7

  908. when he says

  909. that we do

  910. the things

  911. that we do

  912. not want

  913. to do

  914. and we

  915. don't do

  916. the things

  917. we do

  918. want to

  919. do

  920. nevertheless

  921. there's a

  922. growth

  923. in what

  924. we are

  925. right

  926. God has

  927. made us

  928. holy

  929. but then

  930. we have

  931. to grow

  932. in holiness

  933. and the

  934. apostle Paul

  935. will call

  936. this

  937. sanctification

  938. we see

  939. this in

  940. verses 19

  941. and 22

  942. let me read

  943. them for

  944. you

  945. verse 19

  946. verse 22

  947. but now

  948. that you

  949. have been

  950. set free

  951. from sin

  952. and have

  953. become

  954. slaves

  955. of God

  956. the fruit

  957. you get

  958. leads to

  959. sanctification

  960. and its

  961. end

  962. eternal

  963. life

  964. three important

  965. things to consider

  966. before we wrap up

  967. the first

  968. is that action

  969. begets more

  970. action

  971. verse 19

  972. if you look

  973. at it

  974. our behavior

  975. has a dynamic

  976. nature to it

  977. as we engage

  978. with either

  979. lawlessness

  980. or righteousness

  981. that behavior

  982. will grow

  983. conversely

  984. if we starve

  985. that behavior

  986. it will begin

  987. to shrink

  988. having a fire

  989. where we

  990. stoke it

  991. with wood

  992. and it

  993. continues to

  994. grow and

  995. grow and

  996. grow but

  997. we remove

  998. the heat

  999. source or

  1000. the fuel

  1001. source or

  1002. the heat

  1003. the oxygen

  1004. the fire

  1005. triangle is

  1006. broken

  1007. that fire

  1008. will begin

  1009. to dissipate

  1010. there's momentum

  1011. with our

  1012. actions

  1013. this is

  1014. a big

  1015. plug for

  1016. spiritual

  1017. disciplines

  1018. that help

  1019. us to

  1020. get in the

  1021. habit of

  1022. doing what

  1023. is right

  1024. according to

  1025. what God

  1026. has commanded

  1027. us

  1028. but it's not

  1029. an overnight

  1030. thing

  1031. it takes

  1032. time

  1033. it is like

  1034. a muscle

  1035. that you

  1036. have to

  1037. work

  1038. therefore

  1039. the apostle

  1040. Paul

  1041. is saying

  1042. that there

  1043. is hope

  1044. for victory

  1045. over sin

  1046. and for

  1047. growth

  1048. in our

  1049. ability

  1050. to live

  1051. selflessly

  1052. to love

  1053. God

  1054. with all

  1055. our

  1056. heart

  1057. soul

  1058. mind

  1059. and

  1060. strength

  1061. and

  1062. often

  1063. what we'll

  1064. see

  1065. the most

  1066. of

  1067. is to

  1068. love our

  1069. neighbor

  1070. as

  1071. ourselves

  1072. to love

  1073. selflessly

  1074. like Christ

  1075. to serve

  1076. others

  1077. and be

  1078. used by

  1079. God

  1080. to bring

  1081. his

  1082. peace

  1083. and

  1084. blessing

  1085. to our

  1086. homes

  1087. and our

  1088. work

  1089. and it

  1090. will

  1091. soon

  1092. we'll

  1093. find

  1094. become

  1095. a joy

  1096. and not

  1097. a burden

  1098. the second

  1099. thing

  1100. is that

  1101. we must

  1102. consciously

  1103. choose to

  1104. walk in

  1105. this

  1106. righteous

  1107. life

  1108. again

  1109. verse 19

  1110. Paul says

  1111. that we are

  1112. to present

  1113. our members

  1114. our entire

  1115. selves

  1116. our appetites

  1117. our desires

  1118. everything that

  1119. makes us

  1120. us

  1121. we need to

  1122. present these

  1123. to our new

  1124. master

  1125. and it's an

  1126. ongoing action

  1127. that we need

  1128. to do

  1129. thirdly

  1130. such action

  1131. finds its

  1132. end

  1133. or its

  1134. telos

  1135. or its

  1136. ultimate

  1137. objective

  1138. in heaven

  1139. which means

  1140. that the

  1141. things

  1142. we do

  1143. for christ

  1144. the righteous

  1145. actions

  1146. that we

  1147. embrace

  1148. the things

  1149. we say

  1150. yes to

  1151. that are

  1152. holy

  1153. and good

  1154. that turn

  1155. the turning

  1156. from sin

  1157. and the

  1158. turning

  1159. to god

  1160. it has

  1161. eternal

  1162. significance

  1163. we spend

  1164. our time

  1165. in this

  1166. life

  1167. working

  1168. to curate

  1169. the best

  1170. possible

  1171. life

  1172. that we

  1173. can have

  1174. to have

  1175. the best

  1176. experiences

  1177. the best

  1178. enjoyment

  1179. but this

  1180. life is

  1181. fleeting

  1182. i said

  1183. in the

  1184. early

  1185. service

  1186. earlier

  1187. this

  1188. morning

  1189. i'm not

  1190. sure my

  1191. children know

  1192. my grandfather's

  1193. name

  1194. i don't think

  1195. they do

  1196. and the

  1197. likelihood is

  1198. in four

  1199. generations

  1200. they might

  1201. not know

  1202. your name

  1203. your children

  1204. your nieces

  1205. your nephews

  1206. the next

  1207. generation

  1208. life is

  1209. fleeting

  1210. okay

  1211. life is

  1212. fleeting

  1213. it's here

  1214. today

  1215. it's gone

  1216. tomorrow

  1217. and yet

  1218. we spend

  1219. all of

  1220. this time

  1221. in it

  1222. paul is

  1223. saying that

  1224. it's actually

  1225. the life

  1226. to come

  1227. is what

  1228. we need

  1229. to think

  1230. about

  1231. because

  1232. the

  1233. things

  1234. that we

  1235. say yes

  1236. to the

  1237. righteous

  1238. life

  1239. will pour

  1240. into

  1241. eternity

  1242. just consider

  1243. this for a

  1244. moment

  1245. in christ

  1246. a new

  1247. reality

  1248. has been

  1249. given

  1250. to us

  1251. that frees

  1252. us from

  1253. a life

  1254. of selfish

  1255. ambition

  1256. and conceit

  1257. a life

  1258. in which

  1259. god

  1260. himself

  1261. gives us

  1262. strength

  1263. to grow

  1264. in holiness

  1265. and righteousness

  1266. so that

  1267. what we

  1268. do

  1269. in this

  1270. fleeting

  1271. life

  1272. will have

  1273. eternal

  1274. significance

  1275. is this

  1276. not what

  1277. we're

  1278. after

  1279. expressive

  1280. individualism

  1281. promises it

  1282. but it

  1283. never delivers

  1284. no amount

  1285. of money

  1286. or job

  1287. security

  1288. style

  1289. prestige

  1290. a self

  1291. curated

  1292. identity

  1293. can deliver

  1294. eternal

  1295. life

  1296. eternal

  1297. happiness

  1298. you see

  1299. that kind

  1300. of freedom

  1301. is indeed

  1302. slavery

  1303. and it's

  1304. an anti

  1305. sanctifying

  1306. slavery

  1307. it does

  1308. not make

  1309. us more

  1310. holy

  1311. but less

  1312. we do

  1313. not become

  1314. useful

  1315. to god

  1316. or a

  1317. blessing

  1318. to others

  1319. rather we

  1320. become a

  1321. hindrance

  1322. and a

  1323. liability

  1324. let's end

  1325. with this

  1326. sin will

  1327. cost us

  1328. everything

  1329. if we

  1330. continue to

  1331. engage in

  1332. it

  1333. it promises

  1334. us

  1335. significance

  1336. but it

  1337. robs us

  1338. of the

  1339. opportunity

  1340. for eternal

  1341. significance

  1342. we are

  1343. duped into

  1344. thinking we

  1345. will be

  1346. useful

  1347. and necessary

  1348. and we

  1349. end up

  1350. using others

  1351. to bolster

  1352. our sense

  1353. of worth

  1354. it promises

  1355. a free

  1356. reward

  1357. but pays

  1358. us a

  1359. wage

  1360. of death

  1361. and friends

  1362. sin

  1363. always

  1364. pays

  1365. on time

  1366. and in

  1367. full

  1368. but consider

  1369. slavery to

  1370. Christ

  1371. on the

  1372. other

  1373. hand

  1374. we have

  1375. this

  1376. wonderful

  1377. offer

  1378. of being

  1379. enslaved

  1380. to

  1381. Christ

  1382. but it's

  1383. very clear

  1384. here that

  1385. Paul says

  1386. it is

  1387. freedom

  1388. it leads

  1389. to

  1390. sanctification

  1391. it leads

  1392. to our

  1393. growth

  1394. and righteousness

  1395. and holiness

  1396. and ultimately

  1397. leads to

  1398. eternal life

  1399. and it

  1400. cannot be

  1401. enjoyed

  1402. apart from

  1403. Christ

  1404. okay

  1405. we find

  1406. that the

  1407. promise

  1408. is not

  1409. linked to

  1410. an idea

  1411. but to

  1412. a person

  1413. and that

  1414. person

  1415. has gone

  1416. before us

  1417. and we

  1418. will be

  1419. with him

  1420. forever

  1421. and ever

  1422. and ever

  1423. he is the

  1424. one who

  1425. purifies us

  1426. so that we

  1427. become

  1428. in this

  1429. life

  1430. what we

  1431. will be

  1432. for eternity

  1433. it's quite the

  1434. offer

  1435. and it's all

  1436. because what

  1437. we've seen in

  1438. the previous

  1439. chapter

  1440. is that God

  1441. in Christ

  1442. unites himself

  1443. to us

  1444. he doesn't

  1445. say hey

  1446. listen

  1447. climb

  1448. the endless

  1449. ladder

  1450. to heaven

  1451. and then

  1452. you can

  1453. be united

  1454. with me

  1455. he comes

  1456. down

  1457. and he

  1458. scoops us

  1459. up into

  1460. himself

  1461. and all

  1462. of this

  1463. friends

  1464. is a

  1465. gift

  1466. it is

  1467. grace

  1468. itself

  1469. let's read

  1470. this last

  1471. verse

  1472. verse 23

  1473. for the wages

  1474. of sin is

  1475. death

  1476. but the

  1477. free gift

  1478. of God

  1479. is eternal

  1480. life

  1481. in Christ

  1482. Jesus

  1483. our Lord

  1484. it is

  1485. a gift

  1486. that God

  1487. gives

  1488. and it is

  1489. a gift

  1490. given

  1491. because

  1492. of love

  1493. for love's

  1494. sake

  1495. it is a

  1496. source of

  1497. truth and

  1498. goodness

  1499. and the

  1500. very soil

  1501. upon which

  1502. beauty can

  1503. be planted

  1504. and grown

  1505. there could

  1506. be

  1507. no clearer

  1508. choice

  1509. no clear

  1510. dichotomy

  1511. to choose

  1512. from

  1513. so friends

  1514. come to

  1515. Christ

  1516. and present

  1517. your whole

  1518. selves to

  1519. him

  1520. as servants

  1521. as slaves

  1522. and then

  1523. enjoy

  1524. freedom

  1525. not just

  1526. in this

  1527. life

  1528. but for

  1529. eternity

  1530. so
