  1. Psalm 37.

  2. Let my right hand forget its skill.

  3. Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth.

  4. If I do not remember you,

  5. if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy.

  6. Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem,

  7. how they said, lay it bare, lay it bare,

  8. down to its foundations.

  9. O daughter of Babylon, doomed to be destroyed,

  10. blessed shall he be who repays you

  11. with what you have done to us.

  12. Blessed shall he who takes your little ones

  13. and dashes them against the rock.

  14. So not long after the horrific attacks by Hamas

  15. in October of 2023,

  16. 1,400 Israelis, both Jews and Arabs, dead.

  17. A friend of mine was visiting with his friend

  18. and the topic came up

  19. and my friend's friend said to him,

  20. there would be peace if everyone would just stop fighting.

  21. It's kind of true.

  22. My friend's friend, however, didn't see or read about the barbarism,

  23. the murders, the kidnappings,

  24. all of the very difficult, terrible things

  25. that was on the news and on Facebook and Twitter

  26. and social media nonstop for weeks and months.

  27. But I guess it's technically true.

  28. If people would stop fighting, there would be peace.

  29. Is this person, the friend of my friend,

  30. is their comment actually the way forward

  31. or is it terribly ignorant?

  32. October 7th wasn't the only terrible thing that's happened in the world.

  33. The world is marked, marked with catastrophe,

  34. marked with war.

  35. A few weeks back when we were looking in Romans,

  36. we were in Romans,

  37. I made the comment,

  38. I forget exactly the right stat,

  39. but it's something like

  40. the last 3,000 years of recorded history,

  41. there's only been about 90-ish years

  42. where there hasn't been an ongoing war.

  43. We are a warring bunch.

  44. So is the way to peace simply just to drop our arms?

  45. We're going to look at Psalm 137 this morning.

  46. If you were listening

  47. or even half listening

  48. when Tyler read it,

  49. I'm sure your ears perked up at the last verse,

  50. verse 9 of 137.

  51. And this is what it says,

  52. Blessed shall he be who takes your little ones

  53. and dashes them against the rocks.

  54. It might be the hardest verse in Scripture.

  55. C.S. Lewis, and I'm a big C.S. Lewis fan,

  56. he calls this psalm

  57. and specifically this verse

  58. devilish.

  59. He calls it devilish.

  60. But I'm going to suggest to you

  61. and try to show in Scripture

  62. that this psalm is actually incredibly important

  63. and that line itself

  64. is incredibly important

  65. and critical

  66. if we are to know justice

  67. and overcome the evil

  68. in and around us.

  69. So, 137, Psalm 137.

  70. If you could follow along,

  71. that would be great.

  72. I've broken up the text into three parts.

  73. The first part,

  74. verses 1 to 3,

  75. 1 to 4,

  76. 1 to 3,

  77. is resist Babylon.

  78. The second one,

  79. verses 4 to 6,

  80. remember Jerusalem.

  81. And finally,

  82. verses 7 to 9,

  83. request justice.

  84. Resist Babylon,

  85. remember Jerusalem,

  86. request justice.

  87. And I'll just say,

  88. request is not the greatest term,

  89. but it's a word to use,

  90. but it started with an R.

  91. I went for it.

  92. Okay?

  93. The triple R this morning.

  94. Anyways,

  95. jump with me in verses 1 to 3

  96. before we read.

  97. It's helpful for us to understand

  98. a bit of the background.

  99. Okay?

  100. Babylon was a very cruel,

  101. cruel empire.

  102. Like the Assyrians before them,

  103. they were,

  104. they didn't exactly observe

  105. international law

  106. when it came to warfare.

  107. So, some 2,600 years ago,

  108. Babylon besieged

  109. the southern kingdom of Israel.

  110. They surrounded Jerusalem,

  111. eventually destroying the walls

  112. and raising the temple to the ground.

  113. They were cruel.

  114. The accounts throughout

  115. the prophetic books

  116. are shocking to read

  117. of what they've done.

  118. Now, we'll touch on that

  119. in a bit,

  120. but just to set the table,

  121. Babylon was cruel.

  122. And after Jerusalem was conquered,

  123. they enslaved the social

  124. and religious upper class,

  125. the elite, so to speak,

  126. of Israel.

  127. This was their practice.

  128. They would conquer a region,

  129. conquer a nation,

  130. and take their best,

  131. brightest,

  132. and youngest,

  133. back to Babylon

  134. to essentially become Babylonian.

  135. We get a glimpse of this

  136. in the book of Daniel,

  137. if you're familiar at all

  138. with the book of Daniel.

  139. But make no mistake,

  140. Israel found itself in exile

  141. precisely because of God's judgment.

  142. The prophetic books

  143. are a collection

  144. of God imploring his people

  145. to turn away from evil.

  146. Turn away from evil.

  147. Turn back to me.

  148. And even though,

  149. time and again,

  150. they would make a partial return,

  151. they would always find themselves

  152. returning to evil.

  153. So Babylon

  154. became an agent

  155. of God's judgment

  156. towards Israel.

  157. Nevertheless,

  158. nevertheless,

  159. they were still

  160. horrendously cruel

  161. and unjust.

  162. Notice how,

  163. in verse 4,

  164. what does it say?

  165. How shall we sing

  166. the Lord's song

  167. in a foreign land?

  168. Verse 3,

  169. for there are captors.

  170. See,

  171. it wasn't just that Babylon

  172. was an agent of God

  173. and therefore

  174. are,

  175. they're forgiven

  176. for all of the

  177. terrible things

  178. that they've done.

  179. No, no, no, no.

  180. They're still held to account.

  181. They did horrendous things.

  182. They kidnapped people,

  183. breaking up families,

  184. killing,

  185. murdering,

  186. even worse.

  187. So let's,

  188. as that is a bit

  189. of a background,

  190. let's read verses 1 to 4

  191. again and we'll jump

  192. into it.

  193. Asking the question,

  194. why and how

  195. should we resist

  196. Babylon?

  197. By the waters

  198. of Babylon,

  199. there we sat

  200. and wept

  201. when we remembered

  202. Zion.

  203. On the willows there

  204. we hung up

  205. our lyres,

  206. for there are captors

  207. required of us

  208. songs,

  209. and our tormentors

  210. mirth,

  211. saying,

  212. sing us

  213. one of the songs

  214. of Zion.

  215. Zion is synonymous

  216. with Jerusalem.

  217. How shall we sing

  218. the Lord's song

  219. in a foreign land?

  220. You see the,

  221. like I mentioned already,

  222. Babylon,

  223. their big MO

  224. was essentially

  225. not just to conquer

  226. but to humiliate

  227. and ultimately

  228. to assimilate

  229. its conquered people,

  230. whatever nation

  231. that they conquered.

  232. what they were

  233. demanding of the

  234. Israelites

  235. isn't merely

  236. just humiliation

  237. but to abandon

  238. their God,

  239. to abandon

  240. the Lord God,

  241. the God of Abraham,

  242. Isaac,

  243. and Jacob.

  244. They want Israel

  245. to play

  246. religious songs

  247. that ought to have

  248. filled the temple

  249. but instead

  250. to play them

  251. for their own

  252. amusement.

  253. It's a humiliating,

  254. humiliating act

  255. and a real

  256. indictment on

  257. the God

  258. of Israel.

  259. But here's the thing,

  260. why not?

  261. Okay?

  262. If I'm an Israelite,

  263. why not play the song?

  264. God didn't come through

  265. for me.

  266. Alright?

  267. If this is a God

  268. that keeps promises,

  269. the God that is supposed

  270. to be the God

  271. above all gods,

  272. which is to say

  273. the only God,

  274. then maybe he's

  275. a bit of a liar

  276. because the Babylonian

  277. gods gave them

  278. the victory.

  279. Our God didn't

  280. give us the victory.

  281. Israel has been

  282. handily conquered.

  283. The Babylonians

  284. might as well

  285. have just said,

  286. listen,

  287. your God has not

  288. come through.

  289. Our gods are stronger.

  290. Become Babylonians.

  291. Listen,

  292. we can offer you

  293. much, okay?

  294. This is the

  295. fertile crescent.

  296. I don't think that was

  297. their term back then.

  298. Nevertheless,

  299. this is the

  300. fertile crescent.

  301. Listen,

  302. we have streams,

  303. we have rivers,

  304. we have tributaries,

  305. we have willows,

  306. all pictures

  307. of a calm,

  308. a shaded,

  309. peaceful,

  310. abundant land.

  311. Peaceful,

  312. again,

  313. relative peace.

  314. But listen,

  315. we have lots to offer.

  316. Become Babylonians.

  317. Worship our gods.

  318. Bend a knee.

  319. If you,

  320. again,

  321. remember

  322. the book of Daniel

  323. in the Old Testament,

  324. this is exactly

  325. what was said

  326. to Hananiah,

  327. Mishael,

  328. and Azariah,

  329. also known as Shadrach,

  330. Meshach,

  331. and Abednego.

  332. You can read that

  333. in Daniel 3 and 4.

  334. So,

  335. here's the thing though.

  336. Babylon as a kingdom

  337. did not persist.

  338. It was overtaken

  339. eventually by Persia.

  340. But,

  341. Babylon has become

  342. a forever symbol

  343. of whatever

  344. the spirit is

  345. that pits itself

  346. against God's people.

  347. For every generation

  348. of God's people,

  349. there will always be

  350. a Babylon

  351. that seeks

  352. to cause compromise

  353. and to humiliate

  354. the God of the Bible.

  355. Always.

  356. Babylon is

  357. a symbol

  358. of everything

  359. that is anti-God.

  360. Interestingly,

  361. in Revelation,

  362. if you read through it,

  363. very, very difficult book

  364. to weigh through.

  365. Babylon features

  366. quite a bit

  367. in that book

  368. as an anti-Christ,

  369. as an anti-God,

  370. as this evil city,

  371. the city of the world.

  372. So,

  373. I think it's fair

  374. to say that

  375. as we read

  376. this psalm,

  377. we can

  378. rightly

  379. understand

  380. Babylon

  381. as

  382. embodying

  383. the spirit

  384. of the age.

  385. Whatever age

  386. that

  387. we find

  388. ourselves in.

  389. Babylon

  390. represents

  391. the spirit

  392. of the age.

  393. So,

  394. what do I mean

  395. by the spirit

  396. of the age?

  397. A couple of years ago,

  398. Christine and I

  399. were at a dinner

  400. with our bishop,

  401. Bishop Dan Gifford.

  402. Wonderful guy.

  403. Wonderful man.

  404. And somebody

  405. at the table

  406. asked him,

  407. Bishop,

  408. what is the spirit

  409. of this age?

  410. Interesting

  411. to put

  412. the leader

  413. of our denomination

  414. on the spot

  415. right there.

  416. But Dan,

  417. Bishop Dan,

  418. came with

  419. a wonderful

  420. reply.

  421. He said,

  422. in 2020,

  423. I guess it would

  424. be 2024,

  425. in 2024 Canada,

  426. the spirit

  427. of the age

  428. is,

  429. and then he used

  430. the word

  431. self-actualization.

  432. Big word.

  433. But he went on

  434. to explain,

  435. and I think he's

  436. right,

  437. this idea

  438. that we are

  439. ultimate

  440. authorities

  441. in our own

  442. lives.

  443. Our happiness

  444. is the prime

  445. objective

  446. that we all

  447. ought to seek.

  448. We set the

  449. parameters

  450. of what is

  451. moral or

  452. immoral.

  453. We set the

  454. parameters

  455. of what is

  456. just or

  457. unjust.

  458. And ultimately,

  459. we get to

  460. decide what

  461. defines us

  462. above all

  463. else.

  464. We're not

  465. subject to

  466. our families,

  467. our family

  468. identity,

  469. our historical

  470. identity.

  471. We get to

  472. pave our own

  473. way.

  474. We get to

  475. reinvent

  476. ourselves

  477. if we want.

  478. And I

  479. think Dan

  480. is right.

  481. I think

  482. Bishop Dan

  483. is right.

  484. I think

  485. this is

  486. the spirit

  487. of the

  488. age.

  489. This idea

  490. that we

  491. are the

  492. ultimate

  493. authority,

  494. we are the

  495. ultimate

  496. arbiter of

  497. what is

  498. right and

  499. what is

  500. wrong.

  501. For me,

  502. and it

  503. can be

  504. different

  505. for you.

  506. That's a

  507. beauty of

  508. the age

  509. we live

  510. in.

  511. So we

  512. see if

  513. Babylon

  514. represents the

  515. spirit of

  516. the age,

  517. then Babylon

  518. will for

  519. sure be at

  520. odds with

  521. God and

  522. his people

  523. because God

  524. through scriptures

  525. and through the

  526. teaching of

  527. the church

  528. declares to

  529. us that we

  530. actually have

  531. an identity

  532. that is

  533. not plastic.

  534. We don't

  535. get to

  536. decide at

  537. the very

  538. core of

  539. what is

  540. right or

  541. what is

  542. wrong,

  543. what is

  544. just or

  545. what is

  546. unjust.

  547. You see,

  548. Babylon always

  549. tries to

  550. downplay

  551. the

  552. sacredness

  553. and joy

  554. of what

  555. it means

  556. to be

  557. a human

  558. being made

  559. in God's

  560. image.

  561. In our

  562. age,

  563. it says,

  564. you decide.

  565. You don't

  566. need to

  567. follow God.

  568. You don't

  569. need to

  570. be defined

  571. by him.

  572. You know,

  573. the spirit

  574. of the age

  575. says that we

  576. are wooden

  577. and stiff

  578. until we

  579. find and

  580. follow our

  581. true purpose,

  582. until we

  583. listen and

  584. follow our

  585. hearts,

  586. our passions,

  587. our happiness

  588. above all

  589. else.

  590. That's the

  591. way to

  592. be a

  593. true person.

  594. But this

  595. is a

  596. terribly hard

  597. thing to

  598. push back

  599. against,

  600. to resist,

  601. because that

  602. is ultimately,

  603. I think,

  604. what we're

  605. called to

  606. do,

  607. is to

  608. resist

  609. Babylon,

  610. to resist

  611. the spirit

  612. of the

  613. age.

  614. we are

  615. people that

  616. dwell in

  617. Babylon.

  618. We breathe

  619. its air,

  620. we eat

  621. its food,

  622. we work

  623. in its

  624. government,

  625. we participate

  626. in its

  627. leisure

  628. activities,

  629. we watch

  630. its movies,

  631. everything about

  632. it we find

  633. ourselves in.

  634. it is the

  635. very air we

  636. breathe,

  637. as Glenn

  638. Scrivener

  639. puts it.

  640. We read his

  641. book a couple

  642. years ago,

  643. a wonderful

  644. book,

  645. worth your

  646. time to

  647. reread or

  648. read for

  649. the first

  650. time.

  651. So it's

  652. very difficult

  653. to resist,

  654. is it not?

  655. It's not

  656. simply as

  657. easy as just

  658. saying,

  659. hey,

  660. listen,

  661. guys,

  662. try not to

  663. be Babylonian.

  664. Resist the

  665. spirit of the

  666. age.

  667. We are

  668. tempted at

  669. every turn.

  670. Again,

  671. notice verse

  672. four,

  673. why they're

  674. calling the

  675. land that

  676. they're in a

  677. foreign land.

  678. It is not

  679. just because it

  680. is geographically

  681. far from

  682. Jerusalem,

  683. from who

  684. God is,

  685. but it's

  686. being

  687. spiritually

  688. exiled.

  689. Once again,

  690. Israel has

  691. found itself

  692. in exile.

  693. It's not

  694. the first

  695. time.

  696. And they

  697. are tempted

  698. to forget

  699. the one

  700. true God.

  701. So when we

  702. try to think

  703. about how

  704. to resist

  705. Babylon,

  706. it's not

  707. simply to

  708. turn away

  709. from the

  710. spirit of

  711. the age,

  712. but turn

  713. towards

  714. something,

  715. or in

  716. this case,

  717. to someone.

  718. And this

  719. brings us

  720. to our

  721. second point,

  722. that we

  723. can't just

  724. resist Babylon,

  725. but we need

  726. to remember

  727. Jerusalem.

  728. Look with

  729. me at

  730. verses five

  731. and six.

  732. verse five

  733. if I forget

  734. you,

  735. oh Jerusalem,

  736. let my

  737. right hand

  738. forget its

  739. skill.

  740. Let my

  741. tongue stick

  742. to the roof

  743. of my mouth

  744. if I do

  745. not remember

  746. you,

  747. if I do

  748. not set

  749. Jerusalem

  750. above my

  751. highest joy.

  752. what exactly

  753. is Jerusalem?

  754. If you've

  755. ever been

  756. there,

  757. it's a

  758. pretty cool

  759. city,

  760. but it's

  761. a city.

  762. It's actually

  763. a bit dirty

  764. actually,

  765. to come to

  766. think of it.

  767. It's full of

  768. feral cats,

  769. like at night

  770. you just hear

  771. screeching the

  772. whole time.

  773. Nevertheless,

  774. it is a

  775. wonderful city,

  776. it's a cool

  777. place to walk

  778. through,

  779. the old city

  780. to take in

  781. potentially the

  782. very places

  783. where Jesus

  784. himself walked.

  785. to see

  786. where the

  787. temple once

  788. stood.

  789. But if

  790. Babylon

  791. represents

  792. the spirit

  793. of the

  794. age

  795. throughout

  796. all time,

  797. then Jerusalem

  798. must represent

  799. something else

  800. as well.

  801. It must be

  802. bigger than

  803. just the one

  804. city,

  805. the holy

  806. city of

  807. Jerusalem

  808. in modern

  809. day Israel.

  810. You see,

  811. Jerusalem

  812. represents

  813. the very

  814. presence of

  815. God.

  816. God has

  817. made his

  818. dwelling

  819. in Jerusalem

  820. to be with

  821. his people.

  822. He will be

  823. their God,

  824. they will be

  825. his people.

  826. So,

  827. it's important

  828. that we

  829. remember that

  830. Jerusalem,

  831. again,

  832. represents his

  833. very presence,

  834. but God is

  835. not subject

  836. to a specific

  837. locale,

  838. okay?

  839. It's not like

  840. he lives in

  841. a place and

  842. he has to

  843. jump on a

  844. plane to

  845. go to

  846. another

  847. place.

  848. God has

  849. made

  850. everything and

  851. he is

  852. everywhere.

  853. So,

  854. without

  855. diminishing

  856. the place

  857. of the

  858. actual city

  859. of Jerusalem,

  860. it's still

  861. a wonderful

  862. city.

  863. I think it's

  864. precious in

  865. God's eyes

  866. and it's

  867. worth our

  868. prayers to

  869. pray for

  870. its peace.

  871. Nevertheless,

  872. Psalm 137,

  873. and I would

  874. say throughout

  875. the rest of

  876. scripture,

  877. Jerusalem is

  878. this picture

  879. of God

  880. dwelling amongst

  881. his people.

  882. It's a

  883. heavenly city,

  884. the place

  885. where God

  886. himself is.

  887. therefore,

  888. we have to

  889. understand

  890. that

  891. the city

  892. of Jerusalem,

  893. this heavenly

  894. city,

  895. will always

  896. be pitted

  897. against

  898. Babylon,

  899. the city

  900. of this

  901. world.

  902. And this

  903. is the way

  904. we resist

  905. Babylon,

  906. by remembering

  907. Jerusalem.

  908. How do we

  909. do this?

  910. Well,

  911. at the very

  912. least,

  913. we,

  914. of course,

  915. turn our

  916. gaze away

  917. from Babylon,

  918. but it

  919. also is a

  920. call to

  921. embrace the

  922. Lord with

  923. a posture

  924. that is

  925. resolved to

  926. put our

  927. devotion

  928. towards him,

  929. to find our

  930. ultimate purpose

  931. and joy in

  932. him.

  933. Again,

  934. if the spirit

  935. of the age

  936. says that we

  937. can be

  938. defined by

  939. our own

  940. doing,

  941. that we can

  942. sit on our

  943. own throne,

  944. the opposite

  945. would be to

  946. let God

  947. himself define

  948. us and to

  949. worship him

  950. at the

  951. exclusion of

  952. all others.

  953. what I don't

  954. think this is,

  955. it's not a

  956. call to find

  957. joy only in

  958. God so that

  959. we don't

  960. enjoy the

  961. goodness of

  962. this life,

  963. but rather

  964. that we find

  965. our highest

  966. joy exclusively

  967. in him.

  968. We see this

  969. precisely in

  970. verse 6.

  971. If I do not

  972. set Jerusalem

  973. above my

  974. highest joy.

  975. But here's a

  976. wonderful thing

  977. to consider.

  978. joy.

  979. This is an

  980. act of faith.

  981. For the

  982. very reasons

  983. I mentioned

  984. before about

  985. the draw and

  986. the pull of

  987. Babylon towards

  988. us.

  989. It's an act of

  990. faith to believe

  991. that actual joy

  992. can be found

  993. in God.

  994. Joy found in

  995. submitting,

  996. okay,

  997. submitting

  998. to God.

  999. We don't like

  1000. this word.

  1001. trusting that

  1002. God is who

  1003. he says he

  1004. is and that

  1005. he calls us

  1006. to live in a

  1007. certain way,

  1008. trusting in

  1009. him that we

  1010. are not the

  1011. sun upon which

  1012. everything orbits,

  1013. but that he is

  1014. and we orbit

  1015. around him.

  1016. It requires

  1017. faith to believe

  1018. that there is

  1019. incredible joy in

  1020. Jesus' words when

  1021. he says,

  1022. if you would

  1023. lose your

  1024. life for my

  1025. sake and the

  1026. gospels,

  1027. you will gain

  1028. it.

  1029. If you don't

  1030. hate even your

  1031. own life,

  1032. you are unworthy

  1033. to follow me.

  1034. You are to

  1035. love the Lord

  1036. your God with

  1037. all your heart,

  1038. soul,

  1039. mind,

  1040. and strength

  1041. and love your

  1042. neighbors as

  1043. yourself.

  1044. Which is to

  1045. say that

  1046. your priorities

  1047. are shifted

  1048. away from

  1049. you and

  1050. towards God

  1051. and others.

  1052. It takes

  1053. faith to

  1054. trust in

  1055. these words,

  1056. to believe

  1057. them as

  1058. joy-filled

  1059. words.

  1060. You see,

  1061. the heavenly

  1062. city,

  1063. Jerusalem,

  1064. is always

  1065. going to be

  1066. an upside-down

  1067. city from

  1068. the perspective

  1069. of Babylon.

  1070. Lose your

  1071. life for

  1072. God and

  1073. for others.

  1074. Don't make

  1075. your career

  1076. your highest

  1077. joy.

  1078. Don't make

  1079. earning

  1080. potential

  1081. your chief

  1082. end.

  1083. don't be

  1084. defined by

  1085. your home

  1086. or your

  1087. social circles.

  1088. Don't

  1089. worship

  1090. youth.

  1091. Be

  1092. committed to

  1093. your spouse

  1094. even if

  1095. you are in

  1096. a season

  1097. of

  1098. unhappiness.

  1099. Have a

  1100. public faith,

  1101. not just a

  1102. private one.

  1103. Devote your

  1104. life to

  1105. serving others.

  1106. Is this

  1107. really what

  1108. we are being

  1109. called to?

  1110. That our

  1111. happiness isn't

  1112. the ultimate

  1113. end?

  1114. You start

  1115. to see that

  1116. for a

  1117. culture,

  1118. for an

  1119. age that

  1120. is obsessed

  1121. with the

  1122. self,

  1123. the call

  1124. to be

  1125. citizens of

  1126. Jerusalem,

  1127. to trust

  1128. in the

  1129. Lord,

  1130. to have

  1131. faith that

  1132. his ways

  1133. are truly

  1134. joy-filled

  1135. seem

  1136. completely

  1137. upside-down.

  1138. Babylon will

  1139. always resist

  1140. Jerusalem,

  1141. so the

  1142. call is

  1143. always to

  1144. remember

  1145. her.

  1146. Babylon

  1147. will always

  1148. try to

  1149. resist

  1150. Jerusalem

  1151. with

  1152. cruelty,

  1153. showing no

  1154. quarter.

  1155. Therefore,

  1156. we must

  1157. pray and

  1158. have assurance

  1159. that Babylon

  1160. will not

  1161. endure.

  1162. Because if

  1163. it will

  1164. endure,

  1165. if the

  1166. spirit of

  1167. the age

  1168. will persist

  1169. for all

  1170. time,

  1171. then where

  1172. is the

  1173. hope?

  1174. It's a

  1175. good question.

  1176. Let's get

  1177. to our

  1178. third and

  1179. final point,

  1180. verses 7

  1181. to 9.

  1182. And this

  1183. is the

  1184. very difficult

  1185. section in

  1186. our text

  1187. this morning.

  1188. Verses

  1189. 7 to 9.

  1190. Remember,

  1191. O Lord,

  1192. against the

  1193. Edomites,

  1194. the

  1195. Edomites,

  1196. by the

  1197. way,

  1198. are the

  1199. ethnic

  1200. offspring of

  1201. Esau.

  1202. If you

  1203. know the

  1204. scriptures at

  1205. all,

  1206. Jacob and

  1207. Esau were

  1208. brothers.

  1209. These are

  1210. the

  1211. Edomites

  1212. come from

  1213. Esau.

  1214. Remember,

  1215. O Lord,

  1216. against the

  1217. Edomites,

  1218. the day of

  1219. Jerusalem,

  1220. how they

  1221. said,

  1222. lay it

  1223. bare,

  1224. lay it

  1225. bare,

  1226. down to

  1227. its

  1228. foundations.

  1229. O

  1230. daughter of

  1231. Babylon,

  1232. doomed to

  1233. be destroyed,

  1234. blessed shall

  1235. he be who

  1236. repays you

  1237. with what

  1238. you have

  1239. done to

  1240. us.

  1241. Blessed

  1242. shall he

  1243. be who

  1244. takes your

  1245. little ones

  1246. and dashes

  1247. them against

  1248. the rock.

  1249. St.

  1250. Augustine

  1251. doesn't even

  1252. bother dealing

  1253. with how

  1254. crazy this is.

  1255. He allegorizes

  1256. the whole

  1257. thing,

  1258. and I'm

  1259. very tempted

  1260. to do

  1261. the same,

  1262. except that

  1263. it actually

  1264. happened,

  1265. according to

  1266. scripture.

  1267. It actually

  1268. happened.

  1269. And therefore,

  1270. even though

  1271. these are some

  1272. of the most

  1273. shocking verses

  1274. in all of

  1275. scripture,

  1276. they're very

  1277. hard to

  1278. read,

  1279. they're hard

  1280. to stomach,

  1281. let's walk

  1282. towards them

  1283. together and

  1284. see what the

  1285. Lord would

  1286. speak to us

  1287. about through

  1288. them today.

  1289. So let's

  1290. take a look

  1291. for a moment

  1292. and look at

  1293. the brutality

  1294. of Babylon

  1295. and the

  1296. betrayal of

  1297. Edom.

  1298. To truly

  1299. understand what

  1300. has been said

  1301. and to

  1302. understand the

  1303. background here,

  1304. we have to

  1305. understand the

  1306. context of

  1307. the exile.

  1308. Babylon,

  1309. like Assyria

  1310. before them,

  1311. conquered with

  1312. such cruelty

  1313. that it would

  1314. be something

  1315. akin to what

  1316. you might

  1317. remember happened

  1318. with ISIS a

  1319. few years back

  1320. or like I've

  1321. referenced already

  1322. what happened

  1323. in October 7th.

  1324. horrendous,

  1325. hideous

  1326. barbarism.

  1327. This was

  1328. what they did,

  1329. this is how

  1330. they operated.

  1331. There's no

  1332. distinction between

  1333. soldier or

  1334. child, a

  1335. baby, a

  1336. woman, even

  1337. a pregnant

  1338. woman.

  1339. The Babylonians

  1340. took great

  1341. pleasure in

  1342. inciting utter

  1343. torment and

  1344. fear in how

  1345. they went about

  1346. systematically

  1347. killing.

  1348. Read through

  1349. the later

  1350. part of

  1351. 2 Kings if

  1352. you want a

  1353. more graphic

  1354. detail of

  1355. what happened.

  1356. It's really

  1357. horrendous and

  1358. that's all I'll

  1359. say about it.

  1360. They captured,

  1361. like I mentioned

  1362. before, they

  1363. captured Jerusalem's

  1364. best, raised the

  1365. walls, destroyed

  1366. the temple, left

  1367. the survivors in

  1368. utter dismay.

  1369. If genocide is

  1370. defined as a

  1371. systematic

  1372. killing and

  1373. erasure of a

  1374. people and

  1375. their culture and

  1376. way of life, the

  1377. Babylonians were

  1378. guilty of trying.

  1379. And while this

  1380. was happening,

  1381. Israel's neighbor

  1382. and ethnic

  1383. kin, the

  1384. Edomites, not

  1385. only stood

  1386. idly by, they

  1387. did not come to

  1388. help their

  1389. brothers, but

  1390. they even

  1391. cheered on the

  1392. Babylonians as

  1393. they ravaged and

  1394. slaughtered.

  1395. I mean, right

  1396. here, lay it

  1397. bare, lay it

  1398. bare down to its

  1399. foundations.

  1400. It is saying,

  1401. strip them

  1402. naked and

  1403. utterly humiliate

  1404. them.

  1405. Don't just

  1406. destroy them,

  1407. don't just kill

  1408. them, humiliate

  1409. them completely.

  1410. So what we

  1411. see in verses

  1412. 7 to 9, as

  1413. graphic and

  1414. as intense as

  1415. it is, and

  1416. it certainly is

  1417. that, ultimately

  1418. it's a request

  1419. for justice.

  1420. It's a cry for

  1421. justice.

  1422. It's an

  1423. imploring of

  1424. God to be

  1425. just, to be

  1426. who he is.

  1427. God, act

  1428. justly.

  1429. And it's a

  1430. call for the

  1431. punishment to

  1432. fit the

  1433. crime.

  1434. Listen, we

  1435. are near

  1436. 100 years of

  1437. post-World War

  1438. II.

  1439. All of us have

  1440. grown up with

  1441. the Geneva

  1442. Convention.

  1443. If there's war

  1444. crimes, we can

  1445. argue about how

  1446. effective it is

  1447. later on, but

  1448. there's the

  1449. hag.

  1450. There's an

  1451. international

  1452. court.

  1453. If war crimes

  1454. are committed,

  1455. we can,

  1456. hopefully, at

  1457. least, accuse

  1458. people of war

  1459. crimes, but

  1460. hopefully hold

  1461. them to

  1462. account.

  1463. None of

  1464. that existed

  1465. back then.

  1466. There were

  1467. no rules of

  1468. warfare.

  1469. The Babylonians

  1470. weren't governed

  1471. by an agreed

  1472. upon set of

  1473. rules.

  1474. Nevertheless,

  1475. justice had

  1476. to be

  1477. executed.

  1478. violated.

  1479. So what we

  1480. see here is

  1481. something called

  1482. the law of

  1483. retaliation.

  1484. Okay?

  1485. So instead of

  1486. in the ancient

  1487. world, if you

  1488. were wronged,

  1489. and then, you

  1490. know, as

  1491. vengeance would

  1492. have it, I

  1493. would then kill

  1494. your entire

  1495. tribe.

  1496. No, the law of

  1497. retaliation would

  1498. say, hold on a

  1499. second, an eye for

  1500. an eye.

  1501. Okay?

  1502. A tooth for a

  1503. tooth.

  1504. It was a way

  1505. to punish, to

  1506. suppress evil,

  1507. without it

  1508. spilling over

  1509. into decades and

  1510. generations of

  1511. warfare.

  1512. This is what the

  1513. Israelites are

  1514. calling for.

  1515. Okay?

  1516. We see this,

  1517. again, in the

  1518. first part of

  1519. verse 6.

  1520. Sorry, the

  1521. first part of

  1522. verse 7.

  1523. Down in verse

  1524. 8.

  1525. Apologies.

  1526. O daughter of

  1527. Babylon, doomed

  1528. to be destroyed,

  1529. blessed shall he

  1530. be who repays

  1531. you, okay, repays

  1532. you with what you

  1533. have done to us.

  1534. This is exactly

  1535. what the Babylonians

  1536. did.

  1537. So what the

  1538. Israelites are

  1539. calling for is

  1540. justice.

  1541. But that doesn't

  1542. take the edge off

  1543. of this verse,

  1544. does it?

  1545. Okay?

  1546. It's still very

  1547. hard to stomach.

  1548. It's still very

  1549. hard to understand.

  1550. But what if

  1551. these verses

  1552. expressed not

  1553. hatred but

  1554. ultimately love?

  1555. Very scandalous

  1556. thing to suggest

  1557. but let me put

  1558. this forward to

  1559. you.

  1560. Loving goodness

  1561. and peace

  1562. always necessitates

  1563. always necessitates

  1564. hating evil.

  1565. It is not enough

  1566. to have a beautiful

  1567. garden by only

  1568. planting seeds.

  1569. You need to

  1570. weed, okay?

  1571. You need to make

  1572. sure that no

  1573. critters are going

  1574. to come to eat

  1575. the fruit of your

  1576. labor.

  1577. It's not enough

  1578. to just love

  1579. peace and

  1580. love goodness

  1581. without first

  1582. hating evil.

  1583. To ignore evil

  1584. or to deal

  1585. with it gently

  1586. it's not a

  1587. merciful act.

  1588. It doesn't show

  1589. somebody to

  1590. be morally

  1591. virtuous.

  1592. It's actually

  1593. the very core

  1594. of being

  1595. unjust.

  1596. It saps the

  1597. dignity of the

  1598. victim.

  1599. It cheapens

  1600. love.

  1601. It allows for

  1602. evil to persist

  1603. and suffering

  1604. to continue.

  1605. So what we

  1606. have here is a

  1607. personal cry from

  1608. the exiles but

  1609. it is more than

  1610. that, okay?

  1611. It's more than

  1612. that.

  1613. To pray this

  1614. prayer, it's

  1615. also an act of

  1616. faith.

  1617. Again, the

  1618. Israelites are

  1619. being humiliated

  1620. by the Babylonians.

  1621. Your God is

  1622. nothing.

  1623. Play his sacred

  1624. music for us to

  1625. dance to.

  1626. Right?

  1627. They're humiliating

  1628. the Israelites.

  1629. So this cry

  1630. itself, it is a

  1631. cry of faith.

  1632. For our natural

  1633. inclination is

  1634. what?

  1635. For revenge.

  1636. Okay?

  1637. To have

  1638. sweet, sweet

  1639. revenge and to

  1640. do to others

  1641. not just what

  1642. they've done to

  1643. us but to make

  1644. them suffer, to

  1645. humiliate them

  1646. back.

  1647. To make them

  1648. feel even worse.

  1649. But in

  1650. praying this

  1651. prayer, the

  1652. Israelites are

  1653. calling God to

  1654. do what he has

  1655. promised, ultimately.

  1656. To bring justice

  1657. and to remember

  1658. his promises to

  1659. deal with sin in

  1660. all of its

  1661. totality.

  1662. So as horrific

1663. as it is to read

  1664. verse 9, and it

  1665. should be horrific

  1666. for us, I think

  1667. C.S. Lewis is

  1668. right to an extent

  1669. to call it

  1670. devilish.

  1671. Okay?

  1672. Because it, how

  1673. else can you

  1674. describe such a

  1675. verse, such an

  1676. action?

  1677. But it's not

  1678. devilish in that

  1679. if we read it

  1680. with an

  1681. understanding that

  1682. God hates evil

  1683. and cannot let

  1684. it persist, then

  1685. we see that it

  1686. is an act of

  1687. God's love so

  1688. that he refuses

  1689. to let this type

  1690. of horrendous

  1691. evil reproduce.

  1692. abuse.

  1693. How does God

  1694. ultimately crush

  1695. his enemies and

  1696. bring evil to

  1697. its knees?

  1698. He does it by

  1699. defeating it with

  1700. its own tools.

  1701. So even though

  1702. this is the cry

  1703. of the heart of

  1704. these broken

  1705. yet hopeful

  1706. Israelites, and

  1707. God will answer

  1708. the prayers, there's

  1709. not necessarily

  1710. proof in

  1711. scripture that

  1712. that the

  1713. Babylonians, all

  1714. of their children

  1715. died this way, and

  1716. that's, that was

  1717. God's justice.

  1718. Instead he defeats

  1719. the Babylonians with

  1720. their own tools.

  1721. What do I mean?

1722. We get a glimpse of

  1723. it in Jeremiah 29.

  1724. It's a very famous

  1725. passage.

  1726. If you know

  1727. Jeremiah 29, you

  1728. might even have a

  1729. fridge magnet with

  1730. verse 11 on it

  1731. somewhere in your

  1732. house, or just

  1733. buried in a box

  1734. somewhere.

  1735. Very popular.

  1736. What does it say?

  1737. For I know the

  1738. plans I have for

  1739. you, declares the

  1740. Lord, plans for

  1741. welfare and not for

1742. evil, to give you a

  1743. future and a hope.

  1744. It's actually a

  1745. beautiful passage, but

  1746. there's more to it,

  1747. okay?

  1748. There's more to it.

1749. And this is what it

1750. says, if you go down

  1751. to verse 4 of

  1752. Jeremiah 29, thus

  1753. says the Lord of

  1754. hosts, the God of

  1755. Israel, to all the

  1756. exiles whom I have

  1757. sent into exile from

  1758. Jerusalem to Babylon.

  1759. Okay?

  1760. Interestingly, it's

1761. God who is, he is

  1762. saying, I'm the one

  1763. who sent you.

  1764. Okay, nevertheless,

  1765. verse 5, build

  1766. houses and live in

  1767. them, plant gardens

  1768. and eat their

  1769. produce, take wives

  1770. and have sons and

  1771. daughters and take

  1772. wives for your sons

  1773. and give your

  1774. daughters in marriage

  1775. that they may bear

  1776. sons and daughters,

  1777. multiply there.

  1778. Where is the

  1779. there?

  1780. It's in Babylon.

  1781. And do not

  1782. decrease.

  1783. Verse 7, but seek

  1784. the welfare of the

  1785. city where I have

1786. sent you into exile and

1787. pray to the Lord on

  1788. its behalf for its

  1789. welfare and you will

  1790. find your welfare.

  1791. Welfare, again, is

  1792. just peace.

  1793. It's shalom.

1794. Work for the shalom of

  1795. the city.

  1796. Verse 10, for thus

  1797. says the Lord, when

  1798. 70 years are completed

  1799. for Babylon, I will

1800. visit you and I will

  1801. fulfill to you my

  1802. promise and bring you

  1803. back to this place.

  1804. Verse 11, the famous

1805. verse, for I know the

1806. plans I have for you,

  1807. says the Lord.

  1808. plans for welfare and

1809. not for evil, to give

  1810. you a future and a

  1811. hope.

  1812. Verse 12, then you

1813. will call upon me and

  1814. I will come.

  1815. Sorry, then you will

1816. call upon me and come

1817. and pray to me and I

  1818. will hear you.

1819. You will seek me and

1820. find me when you seek

  1821. me with all your

  1822. heart.

1823. I will be found by you,

  1824. declares the Lord, and

  1825. I will restore your

  1826. fortunes and gather you

1827. from all the nations and

1828. all the places where I

  1829. have driven you,

  1830. declares the Lord.

1831. And I will bring you

1832. back to the place from

1833. which I sent you in to

  1834. exile.

  1835. Here's the thing.

  1836. Like an anti-venom given

1837. to a body that has

  1838. suffered a snake bite,

  1839. how does God totally

  1840. upend Babylon?

  1841. Okay?

  1842. By humiliating them.

  1843. Not by killing their

  1844. children.

  1845. Okay?

1846. But by taking the very

  1847. people that they sought

  1848. to humiliate,

  1849. planting them in the

  1850. city that is the

  1851. center of your empire,

  1852. and there they start

  1853. practicing the one true

  1854. faith, worshiping the

1855. one true God who is not

  1856. limited to Jerusalem,

  1857. they turn Babylon into

  1858. Jerusalem.

1859. And all of a sudden,

  1860. Babylon starts to become

  1861. more peaceful.

  1862. And welfare becomes a

1863. critical aspect of what it

  1864. means to be Babylonian.

  1865. And what's interesting in

1866. all of this, and Persia

  1867. came and took over

  1868. Babylon, Babylon ceased to

  1869. be an empire.

  1870. But almost from the

  1871. beginning, almost from the

  1872. beginning, after Christ's

  1873. ascension within the first

  1874. hundred years of the

1875. church, the gospel goes to

  1876. Babylon.

  1877. And people start to

1878. believe in the God of

  1879. Abraham, Isaac, and

  1880. Jacob.

1881. And to this day, and I've

  1882. met some, not many,

  1883. because they're persecuted

1884. horribly by Islam in Iraq

  1885. and in the neighboring

1886. areas, but I have met

  1887. Chaldean Christians.

  1888. Okay?

  1889. Babylonian Christians.

1890. So what does God do

  1891. ultimately to his enemies?

1892. If they will but repent

1893. and turn to him, they

1894. will make them, he will

  1895. make them his children.

1896. How does this come about?

  1897. Ultimately, Christ, God,

1898. the Son of God, comes down

  1899. to earth, takes upon

1900. himself human form, and he

1901. is dashed upon the rock,

  1902. isn't he?

  1903. He is utterly crushed.

  1904. He suffers with great

  1905. indignity.

  1906. He is laid bare.

  1907. He is laid bare.

1908. He is brought down to his

  1909. foundation.

1910. He dies upon a Roman

1911. cross, and in the same

  1912. way that God humiliates

  1913. Babylon with Babylon's own

  1914. tools, God defeats death

  1915. by death itself.

1916. It is a remarkable thing to

  1917. consider, how God deals

  1918. with his foes.

  1919. On the cross, Christ

  1920. undoes death,

  1921. defeats death by death.

  1922. Only Jesus resists Babylon

1923. all the way to the end.

1924. He is the embodiment of

  1925. Jerusalem himself, the

  1926. very presence of God

  1927. amongst his people.

1928. And then we see that Jesus,

  1929. he brings justice.

1930. And he brings justice in a

1931. way that is so unbelievably

  1932. remarkable.

1933. At the end of the age,

  1934. Revelation chapter 18,

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

1935. it says that Babylon, and

1936. again, it's this symbol of

1937. Babylon, Babylon will be no

  1938. more.

1939. Six times Babylon, no more.

  1940. Your craftsmen, no more.

  1941. Your leaders, no more.

1942. No more, no more, no more.

  1943. More.

  1944. But that's not where

  1945. Revelation ends.

1946. The Revelation of Jesus, it

1947. ends with the new Jerusalem

  1948. coming down.

  1949. Okay?

  1950. And it's this wonderful

1951. picture that at the end of

1952. the age, not Babylon, but

  1953. Jerusalem will endure.

  1954. Friends, resist by God's

  1955. strength Babylon.

1956. But more than that, remember

  1957. Jerusalem.

  1958. Remember Jerusalem.

1959. Remember that if you are in

1960. Christ, you are a citizen of

  1961. the heavenly city now.

1962. Resist the call to be a

  1963. Babylonian.

1964. Friends, we have a PR status

  1965. here in Babylon.

1966. But let us never become

  1967. citizens.

1968. Let us trust in Christ.

1969. The true embodiment of the

  1970. heavenly city.
