  1. So I recently read an article, I was reading a book, or glancing through a book by Timothy Keller

  2. ! on prayer, and it refers to this statistic about spiritual tourism. And what this article

  3. ! talks about is it's from the UN of tourism, the UN tourism which is a branch of the UN.

  4. They did a research on how many people travel for spiritual experiences, and the statistic

  5. came back saying around 170 million, over 170 million people travel, travel the world

  6. for how these experiences, and most of these people are from Western countries. And they

  7. travel most of the time to Asia Pacific region. Now if you're anything like me, I'm not the

  8. greatest at geography, I have to look up where this is, where this area is. And this area

  9. is in the area of India, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Nepal, and the countries that surround

  10. that area on the map. And the thing is, over 60% of these people who travel for these experiences,

  11. they do it because they want to go meditating, they want to meditate at an ashram, they want

  12. to practice yoga, they want to go to these places to have an experience. This is a lot of people.

  13. This is more than the population of Canada. This is a lot of people who travel every year.

  14. And it's interesting, because you would think when you look around, you would think that our culture is

  15. becoming more and more secular. But it's actually becoming more and more deeply religious. They

  16. just wouldn't call it religious. They would call it something else. Similarly, within Christianity,

  17. we are rightfully told that we need to pray. You read it in the Bible, we need to pray.

  18. But interestingly, the books that are written about prayer, the new and best way that you can pray,

  19. are the most purchased books within Christianity. Every year, there's new books on how we should

  20. pray, how we should have the right posture of prayer. And these books are constantly purchased.

  21. And the same goes with Christian retreats. These retreats promise that if you go here,

  22. you'll have an experience with God, you'll have a deeper experience with God, or you may learn

  23. something that would help you in your Christian walk. Most of the time, these retreats circle around prayer.

  24. But interestingly, a common thing that you hear within Christianity is that many people are either not

  25. praying, they either don't know how to pray, or they're unsatisfied with their prayer life.

  26. See, there's clearly a deep logging worldwide to connect with some kind of higher power or God.

  27. Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, which is best recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, which we're going to look at,

  28. addresses this topic of prayer. He addresses the topic of prayer. And he does this within a section that's focused

  29. on the motive behind giving, praying, fasting. Fasting is when you abstain from something to focus more on God.

  30. Or a section relying on false securities. So like health, power, money, and those kind of things.

  31. But we don't have the time to focus on everything in this chapter. We're just going to hone in on the section on prayer.

  32. And we're going to look at it. But the principles laid out here in this brief section,

  33. what can apply to all the topics that I just mentioned about giving, about fasting, about relying on false securities.

  34. So if you can turn with me in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 6, verses 5 to 15, that would be very helpful.

    Matthew 6:5–15

  35. If you have it on your phone, look it up, because it's very helpful to have it in front of you,

  36. because you can see what's going on. And you can also glance at the rest of the chapter,

  37. because you can see how it applies to all the areas. Now this section, the prayer section, can easily be

  38. summarized in one sentence. A heart of praise leads to gospel change. But the thing is, this can be

  39. incredibly difficult to follow through on. So we're going to look at this section in three ways.

  40. Motive of prayer, act of prayer, and outcome of prayer. And again, that's motive of prayer,

  41. prayer, act of prayer, outcome of prayer. It's a motive of prayer. Look with me at verses 5 to 8.

  42. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues

  43. and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly I say to you, they have received

  44. their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in

  45. secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. See, in this section, in this section,

  46. there's two people that we see here, the hypocrite and the Gentile. So we're going to focus on the first

  47. one first, the hypocrite. What's a hypocrite? Well, according to the dictionary, it's a person whose

  48. actions, feelings, or actual behavior contradict the moral standards. Virtues or belief may publicly

  49. state or expect others to follow. The origin of the word, as it's said in the dictionary, comes from

  50. the Greek word, hypocrites, which is, you take the C out and you put a K instead, which means stage actor

  51. or a mask wearer, which I think is a better definition. For Jewish people to stand and pray in a synagogue

  52. or at a street corner would have been a normal thing. A synagogue is the Jewish place of worship.

  53. A street corner, what Jesus is talking about here, he's referring to just public places.

  54. For us, it could be saying grace at a restaurant. It may seem weird, but they did most of their

  55. praying out loud. It was a very common thing. That anything, when they pray, it would be out loud.

  56. It wouldn't be this thing where you go off to a room to pray. It would just be out loud most of the time.

  57. Everything in daily life, they would thank God for. So what's the problem?

  58. Isn't that a good thing? The pray at the place of worship or in your daily life.

  59. But you have to notice again what Jesus says in verse 5.

  60. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the

  61. synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. See, motive is everything.

  62. And this is what Jesus is going in at, is the motive behind praying. In a murder case, I watch a lot of

  63. murder mysteries on TV. What they mostly focus on is the motive of the murder. Why did the person

  64. murder this person? If you find the motive, it's easier to prove someone is guilty. And then it'll

  65. also show if the crime was deliberate or an act of passion. It's easy to look at religious leaders

  66. and point the finger at them. The Pharisees of Jesus' time practiced an outward religion. A Pharisee is a

  67. religious teacher. But their hearts were far from God. They would heap up the law of Moses,

  68. or daily rituals on people, but they would not follow them themselves. In our day, we could look

  69. around and we could look online and point fingers at pastors. Those who have preached one way to do

  70. something, but they live a completely different life. And when they're caught, the fall is huge.

  71. But Jesus, we have to remember, is preaching the Sermon on the Mount to his disciples. He's not

  72. preaching this to religious leaders. He's preaching it to everyday people. So what is he doing?

  73. He wants to show that when you pray in public, he wants to know. He's trying to get this out of us

  74. to think about this. Are you praying to be heard for the eloquent words you're saying or how long

  75. your prayer is? Are you praying to be seen that you are a committed follower of him? Or are you

  76. praying to God because you want a relationship with him? This is what Jesus is trying to get at. He's

  77. trying to get at the motive behind the prayer itself. This is what the hypocrite does. They want to

  78. be seen. They want to be seen by how religious they are. In one sense, it's easy to pray in public

  79. in times where we're supposed to, when we're around others. When we say grace, it's easy to pray.

  80. When we're in a Bible study, it's easy to pray. But what Jesus is talking about here,

  81. and verse 6 shows this, when he says, when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray

  82. to your father who is in secret. And your father who sees in secret will reward you.

  83. The question is, what is your heart doing? Is it praying? Are you praying to be seen? Or are you

  84. praying to have a relationship with the Lord? When he says sees in secret or is in secret,

  85. the thing is, he's not saying you cannot pray in public. Jesus prayed in public all the time.

  86. But it's what the motive is behind the prayer. When you pray, are you praying for a reward?

  87. What's the reward? Is it a deeper, lasting relationship with the father? Or is it temporary

  88. praise by others? Look at the character in this section, the Gentile, the other character.

  89. We're going to look at verses 7 and 8.

  90. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they'll

  91. be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your father knows what you need before

  92. you ask him. To a Jewish person, a Gentile will be someone who is not ethnically Jewish,

  93. one who is of a different race. Jesus is saying here, though, a Gentile is someone who is not a

  94. disciple of his, one who hasn't committed their life to him. When a city sports team does well

  95. and makes it to the final matches, people who have never been supporters of the team or never

  96. really been watching it, they jump on the bandwagon. And they become supporters because of the hype

  97. surrounding it. And if the team loses quickly, they disappear and are not present for the next season

  98. unless the team makes it again to the finals. They are not true followers of the team.

  99. The diehard fan who sticks with them through the bad seasons are the true follower of the team.

  100. See, God the Father is often treated like this. When things go well, it's easy to commit.

  101. But when things don't go well, it's easy to leave. Prayer is similar. It's hard to pray when things

  102. aren't going well. We tend to heap up empty phrases, hoping we'll be heard. See, when he refers to the

  103. Gentiles here who heap up the empty phrases, he's referring to those who go to pagan temples and

  104. repeat the word constantly, constantly, constantly. In a sense, they badger God, the God of the temple,

  105. to be heard. God wants some sincere prayer, not just many words. He knows what you need before you

  106. ask him, as Jesus says here. So is this saying, then, should we not pray if God already knows what

  107. we want or what we need? No. What's being said here is that God wants sincere prayer. But how do we pray,

  108. then? That's the ultimate question we have to ask. Well, Jesus answers this in the next section.

  109. Look with me at verses 9 to 12. So how do we pray? Pray then like this, Jesus says,

  110. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done as it is in heaven.

  111. I'm so used to saying the liturgy one. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts,

  112. as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

  113. This is likely the most well-known part of scripture worldwide. And that's with Christians and non-Christians.

  114. I should have gone around, I was thinking about this when I was writing this sermon,

  115. I should have gone around asking people, do you know a part of the Lord's Prayer? Do you even know

  116. what the Lord's Prayer is? I've done a couple non-Christian funerals, and all of them said to me,

  117. we don't want anything religious. But then they asked for the Lord's Prayer. And then when I said the

  118. Lord's Prayer during the funeral, everyone in the room, or most, knew what the Lord's Prayer was and

  119. said it. They would say it with everybody else. Obviously, to a non-Christian, this holds no

  120. significance. It's something that's just said in a moment of grief, a liturgy that holds no meaning.

  121. But to a Christian, the significance of the Lord's Prayer is massive.

  122. It's something that can bring comfort, just like Psalm 23 does. It's also something we can say

  123. in community together. We say it here every Sunday, the Lord's Prayer, before we leave. We say the Lord's

  124. Prayer together. But it's also something that gives a framework on how to pray. Jesus lays this out here.

  125. And it's very important for us to look at it.

  126. It helps us in seasons. It's a guide in seasons when we're lost for words.

  127. When we feel like we're going through something that's too hard, and we have no idea what to say.

  128. This gives the framework

  129. on how we should pray.

  130. But it also gives the framework, when seasons are going well,

  131. on how we should pray.

  132. Because it's easy for our eyes

  133. and our hearts to go astray,

  134. as one of the songs said.

  135. So let's look at it.

  136. See, it opens with an address.

  137. Our Father in Heaven.

  138. Like any conversation,

  139. you must first address the person

  140. you're talking to.

  141. You can't just walk up beside someone

  142. and start talking. They'll have no idea if you're

  143. even talking to them, unless you're giving them eye contact.

  144. See, you have to

  145. open the, you have to address who you're talking to.

  146. And the address is to the Heavenly Father.

  147. Notice how Jesus says,

  148. Our Father.

  149. It's not a distant God,

  150. but a Father.

  151. It's one of deep intimacy,

  152. of closeness.

  153. This is the only God

  154. that you could attribute this to,

  155. of deep intimacy and closeness.

  156. Notice in the first group.

  157. See, the Lord's Prayer

  158. has the address,

  159. and then it has six petitions.

  160. After it.

  161. And you can list these petitions

  162. in two groups,

  163. in two segments.

  164. So the first set of,

  165. the first group of petitions,

  166. they're directed towards God.

  167. Hallowed be your name.

  168. To hallow something

  169. is to show a deep reverence.

  170. Because God is completely holy,

  171. we must treat him

  172. with deep, deep reverence.

  173. The first petition

  174. is worship.

  175. Before anything else,

  176. God is worshipped

  177. for who he is.

  178. He is not worshipped

  179. for what he does.

  180. He is worshipped

  181. for who he is.

  182. For his holiness.

  183. His perfect.

  184. There is,

  185. everything about God

  186. is pure and holy.

  187. Perfect.

  188. And we are called

  189. to worship him for that

  190. before anything else.

  191. Your kingdom come.

  192. Prayer for continual

  193. advancements of his kingdom.

  194. Societal,

  195. personal,

  196. creational.

  197. What this means

  198. is that we are to pray

  199. that more and more people

  200. would become followers

  201. of Jesus.

  202. Would experience

  203. his kingdom.

  204. And for society

  205. and our personal lives

  206. and for the environment

  207. to look more like

  208. God's kingdom

  209. until Jesus returns.

  210. God's kingdom

  211. is a big theme

  212. in the gospel of Matthew.

  213. You see it in

  214. chapter 4,

  215. verse 17.

  216. Jesus said this,

  217. from that time

  218. Jesus began to preach

  219. saying,

  220. repent,

  221. for the kingdom of heaven

  222. is at hand.

  223. This idea

  224. of that God's kingdom

  225. is eminent

  226. is a huge theme

  227. in the gospel.

  228. And it's a huge theme

  229. through the whole Bible.

  230. That Jesus could return

  231. at any time

  232. and we are to pray

  233. for his kingdom to come.

  234. Right now,

  235. on earth,

  236. within things

  237. that we interact with,

  238. then also for him

  239. to return

  240. and for the new kingdom

  241. to come.

  242. The new heaven

  243. and the new earth.

  244. Your kingdom come.

  245. And then he continues on.

  246. Your will be done

  247. on earth

  248. as it is in heaven.

  249. God's will

  250. as it has been revealed

  251. in scripture.

  252. And what is that?

  253. For those who don't know him

  254. to come to a saving faith

  255. through Jesus Christ,

  256. his son.

  257. And for those

  258. who do know him

  259. to become more

  260. like his son

  261. and follow him

  262. to be committed

  263. followers of Jesus

  264. to give up their lives

  265. and serve him

  266. out of deep love for him.

  267. See,

  268. these petitions

  269. have everything

  270. to do with God.

  271. For God

  272. to be more

  273. and more glorified

  274. and for us

  275. to be less and less

  276. inward focused

  277. on ourselves.

  278. Notice how

  279. the next section

  280. of petitions

  281. are directed

  282. towards basic

  283. personal needs

  284. and communal needs.

  285. give us

  286. our daily bread.

  287. Very simple prayer.

  288. This is

  289. to give

  290. the mindset

  291. of daily dependence

  292. on God

  293. and to teach us

  294. not to take it

  295. for granted.

  296. For us

  297. in our western world,

  298. this feels

  299. extremely remote.

  300. We have

  301. grocery stores

  302. and food banks

  303. everywhere.

  304. It's actually

  305. very hard

  306. to truly go hungry.

  307. This gives

  308. the illusion

  309. of self-sufficiency.

  310. most of us

  311. need to pray

  312. for God

  313. to teach us

  314. to not take it

  315. for granted

  316. and to be

  317. more generous.

  318. That we are

  319. to pray,

  320. give us

  321. our daily bread.

  322. We have

  323. so much of it,

  324. we are called

  325. to bless others.

  326. Many in the world

  327. have no idea

  328. when or where

  329. their next meal

  330. is coming from

  331. and how they're

  332. going to feed

  333. their children.

  334. For them,

  335. this prayer

  336. would be way more

  337. pressing

  338. and on their minds.

  339. And then he continues,

  340. and forgive us

  341. our debts

  342. as we have also

  343. forgiven our debtors.

  344. Interestingly,

  345. this is the only

  346. part of this prayer

  347. that Jesus

  348. singles out

  349. and talks about

  350. immediately after

  351. this section

  352. of the prayer.

  353. He ends it

  354. talking about it

  355. and we're going

  356. to look at it

  357. in a moment.

  358. But in the meantime,

  359. debt means sin.

  360. See,

  361. when we sin,

  362. before we know God,

  363. before we've

  364. committed ourselves

  365. to Jesus,

  366. when we sin,

  367. we owe God

  368. for that.

  369. And that is the

  370. whole gospel

  371. there in a nutshell,

  372. that Jesus came

  373. to pay that debt.

  374. That is what

  375. debt means here.

  376. And lead us

  377. not into temptation,

  378. but deliver us

  379. from evil.

  380. We are to ask God

  381. to not allow

  382. situations that

  383. lead us to temptation.

  384. God never tempts us,

  385. but he allows

  386. situations where

  387. temptations can happen.

  388. If he didn't,

  389. he would be a tyrant

  390. over our lives

  391. and free will

  392. wouldn't exist.

  393. Now,

  394. the Lord's Prayer,

  395. as I've just gone

  396. through very quickly,

  397. the Lord's Prayer

  398. that can be made

  399. to fit any situation,

  400. it's a very profound

  401. thing,

  402. what Jesus gives here

  403. to his disciples

  404. and those listening.

  405. It's an amazing compass

  406. for our prayer lives

  407. and the focus

  408. is never on ourselves,

  409. truly.

  410. Did you notice

  411. how everything

  412. is in the plural?

  413. But the focus

  414. is on God,

  415. and mostly

  416. on others.

  417. The whole prayer

  418. is written in plural.

  419. It's a prayer

  420. of community

  421. rather than

  422. an act of deep devotion.

  423. We are to pray

  424. to God,

  425. to worship him,

  426. to ask for his will

  427. to happen,

  428. and for him

  429. to bless others

  430. as well as ourselves.

  431. It's an act

  432. of prayer

  433. within a community.

  434. But look with me

  435. at the last section.

  436. Look with me

  437. at what Jesus does here

  438. after he gives

  439. this idea

  440. of prayer,

  441. how he shows them.

  442. Look with me

  443. at verses 14 and 15.

  444. For if you forgive

  445. others their trespasses,

  446. your heavenly Father

  447. will also forgive you.

  448. But if you do not

  449. forgive others

  450. their trespasses,

  451. neither will your Father

  452. forgive your trespasses.

  453. This is a stark warning,

  454. and it's a warning

  455. because it shows

  456. how a disciple's heart

  457. can be not truly changed.

  458. To be a follower of Jesus

  459. is to be living

  460. radically different

  461. the way our hearts

  462. tend to lead.

  463. We are called

  464. to forgive.

  465. See,

  466. when we are wronged,

  467. when someone commits

  468. something against us,

  469. we instantly want revenge.

  470. But Jesus commands us

  471. to forgive.

  472. Now,

  473. I want to acknowledge

  474. that there is people

  475. sitting here in the room,

  476. or there could be

  477. someone listening online,

  478. who's had horrible things

  479. done to them

  480. by somebody

  481. or many people.

  482. And this idea

  483. of forgiveness

  484. can feel unfathomable.

  485. And for me

  486. to be up here

  487. saying to forgive

  488. could be unsettling.

  489. I want to acknowledge that.

  490. Because forgiveness

  491. is something

  492. that is extremely hard

  493. to do

  494. on our own.

  495. So how do we address this?

  496. How do we address this

  497. for those sitting in the room

  498. and for us as well?

  499. How do we forgive?

  500. Did you notice

  501. how many times

  502. Jesus says,

  503. your father,

  504. our father,

  505. in this?

  506. He says it six times

  507. within this section

  508. focused on prayer.

  509. But in the whole chapter

  510. of chapter six,

  511. it's said eleven times.

  512. See,

  513. this is a very important thing.

  514. When things are repeated

  515. in the Bible,

  516. we need to take note of it.

  517. Because that means

  518. there's a deep meaning

  519. behind it.

  520. Jesus is saying

  521. our standing

  522. with the father

  523. is the same as his.

  524. But how does this happen?

  525. It happens

  526. when we look

  527. to the cross.

  528. When Jesus

  529. went to the cross,

  530. for you

  531. and for me,

  532. he took our place

  533. and gave us

  534. a standing

  535. with the father.

  536. When you put your faith

  537. and trust in Jesus,

  538. you become a follower

  539. of fellow heirs

  540. and inheritors

  541. of righteousness

  542. with him.

  543. When this is truly

  544. fully grasped,

  545. our hearts begin

  546. to change

  547. through the work

  548. of the spirit.

  549. It's not out

  550. of our own doing

  551. that we can forgive

  552. or our hearts change.

  553. See,

  554. through this,

  555. through the cross,

  556. we can look

  557. at this

  558. and see

  559. how a heart

  560. of praise

  561. leads to gospel

  562. change.

  563. See,

  564. only through the gospel

  565. can forgiveness

  566. truly happen.

  567. And forgiveness

  568. doesn't mean

  569. reconciliation

  570. with the person.

  571. It doesn't mean

  572. you have to have

  573. a relationship

  574. with the person.

  575. That's not what

  576. forgiveness is.

  577. Forgiveness

  578. is allowing you

  579. to let go

  580. and for the gospel

  581. to continually

  582. change you

  583. deeper and deeper

  584. into a child

  585. of God.

  586. That is what

  587. forgiveness is about.

  588. Forgiveness

  589. is not about

  590. making a new

  591. relationship

  592. with that person.

  593. It's about

  594. what God

  595. can do

  596. with you

  597. and through you

  598. as you forgive

  599. through the work

  600. of his spirit.

  601. Only through praise

  602. and adoration

  603. in our prayer lives

  604. can we be disciples

  605. of Jesus.

  606. And it starts

  607. with looking

  608. at the cross.

  609. Looking at

  610. the great sacrifice

  611. Jesus did for us,

  612. for you

  613. and for me,

  614. and how much

  615. we have been forgiven

  616. through grace alone.

  617. That is where

  618. change happens.

  619. And that is where

  620. the praise happens.

  621. And that is when

  622. gospel change happens.

  623. And that is when

  624. we can say

  625. the Lord's Prayer

  626. not as an act

  627. of just monotonous

  628. liturgy,

  629. but as an act

  630. of deep devotion

  631. and community

  632. and communal prayer.

  633. This deep longing

  634. to connect

  635. with a higher power

  636. that's worldwide,

  637. it's a worldwide longing,

  638. is only satisfied

  639. in the one

  640. true living God.

  641. God.

  642. It's only satisfied

  643. in that.

  644. People flock

  645. around the world

  646. to have a religious

  647. experience,

  648. a spiritual experience.

  649. But we see here,

  650. Jesus lists it out,

  651. what is a true

  652. religious experience.

  653. And that is a relationship

  654. with the Father,

  655. praising him,

  656. asking for his will,

  657. for his kingdom to come,

  658. praising him for the cross,

  659. telling people

  660. about the cross,

  661. spreading that message,

  662. that Jesus came

  663. into the world

  664. to save sinners.

  665. Thank you.
